Thread Game Informer | MvC2 Arcade1Up Preview/Interview (#FreeMVC2 Brought Capcom/Marvel Together to Re-Release the Game “One Last Time”)
This video talks about the chipset powering it: Aside from MvC2, I would guess Ridge Racer and Killer Instinct are the other two most "powerful" cabs they have released. I believe the Ridge Racer cab is their only 3D entry so far. NFL Blitz is coming, and my understanding is you need at least a decent amount of horsepower to emulate that, but I could be wrong. I don't really run any emulators, so I'm a bit ignorant.

Your best bet would be to try to buy the MvC2 pcb off of eBay or Facebook marketplace. There's a good chance you'd be able to simply hook that pcb up to everything in your existing cab. Obviously, I don't know for sure, but the controller deck encoder is most likely the same and both cabs use the same monitor. I suppose the only other thing that could cause an issue would be the wifi, but the MvC2 pcb has an ethernet port, so you could get around that. This is all speculative on my part, but the community will figure these things out and share within days of release.

I think Console Kits on YouTube said the new SFII yoga flame cab has the same upgraded chipset that the MvC2 cab runs on. Pretty good chance the new MK30th cab has it as well. Those machines don’t need that chipset, but they placed a larger order and got a better price on them. And the new cab design is clearly inspired by the Midway cabs from the 90’s, yet they are using same design for Capcom cabs as well. So, same cab design, same chipset to minimize costs across 4 different cabs. Yet, MvC2 will be $100 more. Good chance some or all of that extra money is due to licensing. Not that I’m complaining. I’m into collecting these cabs and super stoked for MvC2.

I’m not aware of any deal AtGames has for Ms. Pac-Man. Arcade1up has released several Ms. Pac-Man cabs. Also, I’m not 100% sure, but I think being able to delete the source code meant Arcade1up was able to delete their source code for their MvC2 machines. Not Capcom’s source code. Meaning Capcom nor Disney have any rights to their version of the code. Which isn’t a big deal. It’s confirmed to be based on the arcade version, so it’s surely just an arcade rom running on an emulator all in a somewhat custom container.

The interesting thing is someone on a stream (not John D) said that Arcade1up has the exclusive rights to the game and if a console or pc port were to happen it would have to be through them. Not sure how accurate that is, but I feel like the person who said it (can’t remember who) is close with John D and Arcade1up.

Crazy to me that it took so long for someone to say it. Nintendo is ridiculously underrated as far as this goes. All of their titles are very polished and don’t release with 5GB+ day one patches. I am always in awe of their organization and would love to be on the inside to see how their development process is managed and run.

I don't disagree with what you are saying. I prefer IL Eurosticks in my cabs and you have definitely had to dremel away some of the base plate in order to get them in the stock control decks due to how close the buttons are to the stick. Having said that, I believe this new cab design that MvC2 has (and first appeared with the MK 30th edition) has a larger control panel and you can now install HAPP or IL sticks without having to cut away any of the base plate. If someone is looking to install Sanwa sticks, those have always been easy to install without any kind of modification to the joystick. And of course, swapping the buttons/switches has always been super easy on these things.

yeah, i agree. the original mvc cab from a1up hardly went on sale and never at steep discounts. the only chance of steep discounts is if a1up massively overestimates demand and produces way too many. i'd imagine they are pretty good at forecasting at this point though.

I was lucky enough to get an N64 on launch day in the U.S. Like many others have said, I wouldn't have guessed all those games came out in the system's first year, but I was a teenager back then and time flowed MUCH more slowly. I owned the following in the first year: Super Mario 64 Wave Race 64 Killer Instinct Gold Shadows of the Empire Turok Dinosaur Hunter Star Fox 64 Goldeneye 007 REALLY hoping Wave Race 64 comes to Switch. Would love to play that again at higher res and with improved/stable framerate.

Their newest announcements have all been $499 I believe. It's $200 more, but they all include custom risers, stereo speakers, lit marquees, faux coin doors, wifi, and more games. I think the $500 price point is fair for what they are offering. The initial $300 units offered far less.

I'll be surprised if they ditched the 17" BOE 1280x960 monitors. I'm not sure why everyone is focusing on the price of these. The Midway Legacy cab is $50 cheaper than this new MK cab. The new one has a coin door, wifi, and a bit of extra mdf for the sides of the control panel. There's a reasonable chance the extra $50 covers the cost of those with no need to downgrade the monitor.

Yeah, I like the look of it as well. It's nicely-built in all honesty. I wish the modding scene was as active for the MVSX as it is for Arcade1ups, but I guess it makes sense considering how many different cabs Arcade1up released. Just saw this video yesterday. He replaced the black t-molding on the MVSX with white t-molding. Looks REALLY nice. I'd be tempted to do it to mine, but I have zero experience with that kind of thing and I'd be worried I'd ruin my cab:

I love seeing these get attention here. I've been really into them for quite a while now. A big part of it for me is that the cabs have authentic artwork on them. I was never aiming to pick up The Simpsons, but I'd def buy it if I saw it for $200. I don't have the time to go hunt for it though. I've really gotten into modding these as well. I've kept the games/pcb's stock. I'm more into making the cabinets as cool as they can be. I have a whole list of things I want to do (larger screens, light up coin doors, better joysticks and buttons, higher quality marquees etc...) to all of my cabs once I have the time. Here's a pic of three of my cabs: The control decks on the SFII and MKII are not stock and I've improved the kickplate art. All three machines have IL sticks and buttons with cherry microswitches. I think I've gotten more enjoyment out of modding these things than playing them! But as someone who grew up playing these machines in the arcades its super cool to own these and I enjoy improving them.

Thread Would the gaming history be different if Nintendo had adopted the compact disc with the Nintendo 64?
Usually when people bring up Nintendo including a disc drive in the N64 its questioning whether they would have gotten better 3rd party support. A disc drive would not have done much to improve the visuals in the games (aside from being able to include more pre-rendered backgrounds and fmv). I always wonder what would have happened if Nintendo had spent a bit more on the hardware to make it more powerful. If the N64 had more memory to allow for more/larger textures and the ability to push a higher number of polygons it would have been a REALLY impressive piece of kit. The only reason I ever wonder about this is due to how quickly Nintendo dropped the price. It was supposed to launch at $299 and shortly before launch they dropped the price to $249 and then it wasn't long before it was down to $199. That makes me wonder if they could have afforded to build a machine that was noticeably more powerful.

I'd imagine it's not a deal breaker for 99% of people, but it is kind of a bummer if you actually grew up watching the cartoon and playing the arcade game (the '89 arcade game uses the cartoon theme song). The performance mode is curious to me. It makes me feel like I'm watching a tv with motion interpolation turned on. I've never had a 60fps game do that to me before and I'm wondering what the cause is. Makes me wonder if there is some significant motion interpolation taking place in order to achieve the 60fps. As an aside, the game is gorgeous in resolution mode. Didn't quite finish the intro/tutorial section, but played a good bit of it. Really impressive stuff. Probably won't get to actually play through this one for a little while, but ended up caving today and bought it just to check out the visuals due to all the hype. Not disappointed at all. From what I've seen/read they have improved the way the HDR settings impact the image, but I don't think any of the tv "experts" would say the HDR implementation is very good. Anyway, here's what I understand: Maximum Brightness: set this to the max nits of your display Paper White: this only affects brightness of the hud, so set it wherever you like. OLED users are recommended to set to 100 Tone-Mapping Midpoint: Set this to 1.0 based on Vincent's (from HDTVTest) recommendation. If you find it too dark you can bump it up a bit. Also note that there is a bug when adjusting this in the settings screen and you do not see the impact of the changes. You have to go back to gameplay to be able to see the change.

Thread What do you think of Nolan’s Batman film trilogy?
Yeah, the first half of Begins is really, REALLY good. I like TDK a lot, but the thing for me has always been that it's mostly a really good/suspenseful crime drama. You could pretty easily tweak the movie to make Batman just a detective and the Joker a random psycho and it would still be a compelling movie. Outside of a scene or two the actual "Batman" parts aren't really that great. TDKR is just awful. Another issue I have with the trilogy is the lack of continuity between the films. Both in Gotham as a city/location and also how they just kind of abandon the end of TDK in the beginning of TDKR. Bruce being a recluse and no longer Batman is kind of the easy way out for what the end of TDK set up.

I've run into this issue as well on my CX. My PS5 is not currently hooked up to my CX, so hard to test/remember, but I believe I left the CX Black Level setting on Auto and then cycled between PS5's settings for RGB Range (Automatic, Limited, and Full) until things looked right. If you have the Last of Us 2 on PS5 the dashboard/OS wallpaper for the game while it is selected on the home screen is a great reference: With the wrong settings the blacks are crushed and you cannot see a lot of the grey to the left of Ellie. I think the issue is when using Auto on both CX and PS5 they do not handshake correctly and things are mismatched. I can't recall, but I also want to say I had crushed blacks when setting CX Black Level to "Low" and PS5 RGB Range to "Limited." I could be wrong about that one though.

I don’t remember snes games being that expensive. I was only a kid, but we didn’t have a ton of money and I was always conscious of the price of things I asked for at Christmas or on my birthday. Thread New U.S. Antitrust Bill Would Require Apple and Google to Allow Third-Party App Stores and Sideloading
I disagree. It's not Apple or Google's fault no one else has managed to come in and be successful in the market. They shouldn't be punished for their success. And this isn't being done in the name of social welfare. This is being pursued because companies want to do business on Apple's platform without having to pay them for it. Nothing is going to change for the consumer. The prices will all be the same. Companies will just pocket the 30% that used to go to Apple.

I was responding to your comment saying "If Spotify pulls their app off iOS then Apple has a de facto monopoly on streaming services." My response is yes, they do, on their platform. Which I personally think is OK. I'm not trying to say that I'm right. This is just my opinion and how I see this. Again, I think a company should be able to do whatever they want with their platform without government intervention.

Again, sucks to be Spotify. Apple has a monopoly regarding music streaming services ON THEIR PLATFORM. Which I think is fine. They invested billions to create and cultivate said platform. They should be able to do whatever they want with it. Its not public domain. And if it is, and all platforms going forward are going to be, then what is the motivation to invest billions into creating a new one?

I wrote up several paragraphs, but I'll just say I'm against this. I know I'm in the minority here, but I think people and/or companies should have the right to do whatever they want with platforms (combination of hardware/software) they've created. The government stepping in at some arbitrary point and saying "Your product is so popular that you have to let everyone do whatever they want with it" is nonsense in my opinion.

Thread New U.S. Antitrust Bill Would Require Apple and Google to Allow Third-Party App Stores and Sideloading
I believe Microsoft should not have been forced to give other browsers prominence. I believe they should be allowed to prevent any piece of software from running on their OS they want, for any reason. The thing is a cell phone, or at least the computing part of it, is not essential to every day life. And really, this all comes down to money and percentages of sales from the app store. You could perhaps argue that some apps out there are essential. I'd be willing to bet that any app that would qualify as essential is free, so it doesn't matter which store you buy it from. I'm speaking on computing platforms (combination of hardware/software). A bit different than fossil fuels. Sucks to be Spotify. If you don't want to pay the fee then don't put your service on iOS. I'd argue the market will correct such things. If everyone pulls their apps/services off of iOS because they don't want to pay the percentage, eventually it will affect iPhone sales. People will migrate to a different platform. If Apple starts blocking competitors from even releasing apps on iOS it will, at some point, affect sales and they will lose users. And at the end of the day, being able to listen to Spotify on your mobile phone is not an essential part of life. There's no need for the government to step in and say, "Well, Apple, you're really not being fair to Spotify. We are now going to tell you what you can and can do with the platform you've created and invested billions of dollars into while creating and cultivating it."

It would just make things cleaner and I wouldn't have to bother with the long cable adapter they included. I haven't been able to find such an adapter though. The plugs are here: They are a bit small and don't exactly fit snug. I also tried the next two sizes up from those, but they were too big to fit in the holes. I ended up removing my deck protector and super-gluing the underside of the plug caps to my deck protector. I let it dry for a couple hours then put it back on. You could definitely get away using them without superglue. I'd recommend buying them and inserting without and then making the decision. They are super smooth on top and, while you will notice them as your hands touches them, there's zero friction, so your hand just slides across them, no issues. MUCH better than the screws that are there. And they are small, so they are not any kind of obstruction to your hand movements. Here's my deck: And here's an idea of how high I raised it. The little bit it goes above the side panel combined with the deck protector height really does a nice job of preventing hands from rubbing against side panel edge and affecting the side panel artwork (causing it to peel off).

I've contacted a bunch of the different companies making custom control decks, replacement deck protectors, etc... for Arcade1up machines and none of them were willing to make what I want. I'd also love to get the marquee out of the way a bit. I bought the 3" risers OP posted up above and the screen height was great, but the control deck being 3" higher just didn't feel right to me. I had the Gen1 Street Fighter and Final Fight cabs. I sold those and got the Capcom Legacy cab and NBA Jam. While it's true the Capcom Legacy cab design has issues, it was super easy to raise my control deck. Cost me like $5 in parts at Home Depot. And I am not a "handyman" by any stretch of the imagination. I actually raised mine about 1/16" higher than the side panel trim. That additional height, combined with the deck protector height, seems to prevent my hands from rubbing against the edges and prevents the side panel art from coming off. The other small thing I did was get small, smooth top, rubber plugs to go in the two lower screw holes that hold the deck and deck protector in place. This way your hands (especially player 1) are not rubbing against the screw heads. MUCH better experience. And the deck and deck protector are quite sturdy and in place with just the two screws up top.

I never played it. I had moved on from the N64 by the time that released. Just watched some footage on YouTube and it's a nice-looking game for the system and the time. I think another thing to consider is that Japanese third-parties chose the PS1 as the console of choice that generation. All of their best talent was focused on getting the most out of the PlayStation hardware. What would they have achieved on the N64 if it was the preferred system to develop for that generation? A bit more on-topic, I preferred the steady, solidness of the N64 visuals. The OP does a bit or a disservice to the N64 hardware by implying its only benefit was larger areas/worlds. The blurred textures never bothered me too much and the built-in "free" AA was nice.

Yeah, for sure. I often think about what the N64 could have been had Nintendo chosen to make it a bit more expensive whenever discussion of the system's capabilities comes up. Had they included more memory for textures and a bit more processing power so that it could push higher poly-counts with all of the effects turned on it would have been a ridiculously impressive machine for the time. I feel like they could have done it considering they launched at $199.

I could see that being the case. I'm guessing for some games it wouldn't seem that different for me. That's why I mentioned Demons Souls remake on PS5 looking bad to me in 30fps mode on my LCD. If it is already jarring there then it's definitely going to be jarring on the OLED, so there's really no way for me tell that the OLED has issues. Another game that stands out to me was the Darksiders Switch port. It has a 1080p/720p 30fps mode or a 60fps mode with reduced resolution. I found the 30fps mode in that game really jarring as well (in both handheld and when docked to a 1080p lcd). No way I could play the game in that mode. I think different games handle 30fps better than others when it comes to visual fluidity. I'm not sure what the factors are (motion blur I would assume, but perhaps other factors?). For instance, BotW on Switch looks fine to me at 30fps. Not jarring at all.

Thread Got a 65" OLED TV. It's phenomenal, but 30fps games look straight out broken now.
This is interesting. I've watched a bunch of films on my CX and haven't been distracted by or noticed any judder. I had no idea OLED has an inherent issue with this. I will say over the last year lots of 30fps games have been very displeasing to the eye for me, but that has occurred on lcd screens. For example, the Demons Souls remake on PS5 is unbearable in 30fps mode on my lcd screen. I've gamed very little on my CX and don't think I've tried any 30fps games on it. Now I'm kind of curious.

I would like to see Raya, but for some reason the $30 rental cost just seems too much to me. I acknowledge that this doesn't really make any sense as if my girlfriend and I went to the movies it would $24 for our tickets and then we always get popcorn and snacks so... yeah. Just a psychological thing I guess. And I'm not particularly frugal when it comes to entertainment spending. Weird.

Yep, me too. And I've been a software developer for 10+ years. A bit anecdotal, but my girlfriend had Android phones for the first few years we were together. She is NOT a tech person and was always asking me how to do things on her phone (which is where my Android interaction comes from). I always had a hard time figuring it out as well. Truly frustrating. Finally, one Christmas I just got her an iPhone. The questions immediately stopped. She's had an iPhone for years now and she never asks me questions about using it. And she's still not a tech person.

Yep, I have the 27UL600. Very similar specs to this and I would say the UL600 is solid as well. One thing to note about these models is that they are VESA certified for 400nits which I think is relatively bright as far as HDR monitor go (based on what is available). It took me a bit to get the settings dialed in on mine, but once I did I was relatively happy with the HDR picture. I say relatively as I own a CX, so it obviously doesn't compare to that.

If you have access to Battlefield 1 it has an HDR adjustment tool (0-10000) and image that is very easy to use. Once you lock in the right number using it you can apply that to every game that asks for hdr setting from 0-10000 (luminance, I think?) on that tv. It's possible it may vary depending on the tv settings, but I've found the number is the same on both Series X and PS5 when using the same tv settings, which makes sense as this is about the max luminance of the display and setting the clipping point.

I'm fully expecting to end up with burn-in on my CX. We both work from home and it's on for 12-14 hours a day during the work week. My girlfriend has her routine of channels that she has on in the background during the work day. Its not the same channel all day, but each channel is on in blocks. No news channels with constant tickers at least. The thing is she could not have cared less if we got the TV, so if I turnaround and tell her we spent all that money on a new TV and now she can't use it how she wants to she will probably not be happy. In fairness, she would turn it off throughout the day if I explained it all to her, but she'd still be like "WFT?" I'm not too worried about it and am just kind of hoping for the best. The TV is amazing and I'll have zero regrets if permanent burn-in shows up and I have to replace it in a year or two. Not sure I'd buy another OLED in that scenario, but I wouldn't be mad.

That part is a bit misleading I think. I believe the intent was to get the point across that levels/areas are made up of 80-90 million polys. Right after that is mentioned, they go on to talk about the culling system which allows them to use such high poly counts. 80 million polys a frame would be 4.6 billion polys a second at 60 fps. More on topic, they don't want to disclose these "costs" as that kind of disrupts the whole "negotiating" process where they attempt to charge insurers as much as possible (while insurers attempt to pay as little as possible).

Thread Digital Foundry | Devil May Cry 5 SE: PS5 vs Xbox Series X - The First Next-Gen Performance Face-Off
Who in this thread has said we should expect a PS4 vs XBO level of difference? I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere. All I said was that the "only 17%" that gets thrown around all of the time here is, in my opinion, a bit disingenuous. I'm not sure why the power difference from last gen keeps being brought up. My only point is that 2TF is a significant amount of computing power and a lot can be accomplished with it. when taken in the context of the capabilities of these machines.

Thread Digital Foundry | Devil May Cry 5 SE: PS5 vs Xbox Series X - The First Next-Gen Performance Face-Off
I'm actually arguing that percentages without context are useless. "Only 17% difference" does a great job of ignoring the fact that we are talking about 2TF of computing power which is significant. Surely you are not saying that 2TF is essentially meaningless...?3rd party will look close because they likely won't take the time to take full advantage of the extra power. Sony 1st parties are hard to beat due largely to talent I believe. That has zero to do with the actual power of the machines. That's a simple, cherry-picked example. Let's consider a PS5 game that runs at a locked 60fps. Series X also runs it at 60fps then and has an additional 2TF of computing power to enhance the graphics. Better shadows, better particle effects, better post-processing effects, etc... Are we arguing you really can't accomplish much with 2TF of GPU compute power? If so, there's a lot of PS4 games that I'd like to show you for the first time...

Thread Digital Foundry | Devil May Cry 5 SE: PS5 vs Xbox Series X - The First Next-Gen Performance Face-Off
For sure. A lot of people here like to throw around the "only 17% difference in power" figure, but that 17% is greater than the gpu capability of the most powerful system at launch from the previous gen (PS4). So... that is not insignificant at all. However, I agree with all the takes that multi-plats will be virtually identical and it will be up to first party efforts to show off the difference in power. That will be a tough task for Microsoft as we all know Sony's 1st parties are REALLY good at pulling off visuals we didn't think possible on the hardware. Regarding the performance, I'd guess its more that the Xbox build isn't as well optimized as the PS5 build. I think that's much more likely than it being a situation where the PS5 is "punching above its weight."

I picked up my Series X at Best Buy this morning. There were about 20 people in line in front of me. Every person ahead of me walked out with just a Series X. No games, no peripherals... it was definitely weird. I've been present at stores for many console launches and usually everyone is also getting a game or two and often an extra controller. It really kind of drove home how this launch is different.

Yeah, I had read or saw on youtube (can't remember) that people complained about the brightness of the screens and the loudness of the sound on the very first machines and that Arcade1Up made adjustments. Final Fight is like a Gen 1.5 cab, so I've just assumed the darker screen is due to the tweaks they made. My FF unit is also WAY quieter than my SF unit. In the end, it's not a huge deal, but I'm a bit anal at times and would prefer they were both the same. It doesn't help they are right next to each other. More on topic, I would love to pick up the MK, TMNT, Golden Tee, and Marvel units. The price thing is so bizarre to me... Over the years I have seen people saying they remember paying $80 for Street Fighter II on SNES, but I really don't remember ever seeing those kinds of prices. Granted, I was a kid, but my family only had so much money and I was always conscious of that when I asked for things. I've always thought the vast majority of my SNES carts cost $50 with maybe the ocassional $55 or $60 game. And most of them I was getting at or near release. A bit more on topic, I think it's really as simple as they were two vastly different systems and it all depended what developers focused on and got out of them. I've always preferred the SNES... mostly due to enjoying the library more and due to its advantages when it comes to the color palette (higher number of available colors, higher number of colors on-screen).

This is pretty much spot-on. Another thing people need to consider is how heavily Microsoft is invested in cloud computing and data centers. So... when someone is paying $15/month for GamePass Ultimate to get Xbox Live Gold, XCloud, and GamePass, most of that money can go towards covering the costs of licensing games for the service. Microsoft has other areas of (successful) business that use and cover the cost of their data centers. They are in a unique position to make a service like this work (as is Google), but it will never completely replace people purchasing games (especially the big AAA titles from 3rd parties).

Thread Based on how tech has progressed since the Switch, how powerful could a Switch Pro in early 2021 actually be?
Yeah, a 4x increase in power definitely qualifies as "significant." I'm not particularly concerned with the next Switch being able to get to 4k. I still do all of my gaming at 1080p. Plus, I'd think attractive 1080p games would look fine on a 4k tv or monitor when viewed from the appropriate distance since it's an integer upscale.

They are small without the riser, but actually a decent size with the riser. I have the Street Fighter and Final Fight units. My biggest gripe, and I've never seen this mentioned anywhere, is that they are not scaling the games (at least on these two units) up by an even integer value, so there's pixel crawl all over the place.

Kind of like the Mega Man X games, but with larger areas to explore. And yes, there will be a scanline option, but no filtering of the sprites. I ended up buying one of these yesterday... didn't love the look of it from the photos/videos and none of the colors really did it for me, but ended up with the turquoise. I have to say, the unit looks better in person IMO. It also feels really great and I like the size of it. I haven't really tested the dpad in a fighter or platformer, so I can't comment on that. Surprisingly, my biggest issue with it is the screen size. It just feels a bit small to me, but that also seems to depend on the game. It def felt small for SNES Online games and Capcom Beat 'Em Up Collection. I also thought it felt a bit small while testing out Dead Cells. Mario Kart I didn't have an issue with. It looks as if Nintendo could have possibly put the same screen as the regular Switch in the lite based on the huge bezel size. Had they done that, this thing would be killer. I'm also wondering if that huge bezel is there to make upgrading the screen size on the lite very easy as cost of components comes down. So... I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it. I really feel like Nintendo nailed the size of the regular Switch's screen as far as it being big enough that you still feel like you are playing/getting a console experience on the go. Not quite sure the lite conveys the same feeling. Going to give it another day or so (I've only spent about an hour with it), but we'll see.

I honestly do not know enough about the tech that the Switch and dock use to know whether the $90 price for the dock is reasonable or absurd. I do know that Nintendo would make more money selling someone a $200 lite then having them purchase a $90 dock and $70 joycons separately. And I know Nintendo likes money. So... I really think there was just no way to have the lite be dockable and hit the $199 price point. Of course, stranger things have happened and I could be totally wrong.

Well, if the lite was $200 by itself, but then you need to purchase a dock for $90 and joycons for $80... they (Nintendo) make more money. The lite at $200 is like a cheaper entry point into the ecosystem and then for additional costs you can get the "full" experience. It's honestly a no-brainer. My thought is that they either removed some hardware/chip(s) from the board and/or thermals come into play and it was just not possible to do the lite at a $199 price-point and have it be dockable.

I'm not sure Nintendo was EVER the best graphics developer... it just wasn't their priority. Super Mario 64 and OoT are probably the closest they've ever gotten I think. Their games have always looked great though. As far as the N64 goes, it was an impressive machine for it's time when in the right hands. I always preferred the N64's blurry, low poly look to PS1's warping polys and shimmering textures. I think we can all agree neither is ideal though.

Thread The Verge - xCloud and Stadia "are fundamentally different platforms with different aims and in very disparate levels of readiness"
Eh, article misses the mark a bit I think. If Microsoft bundles xCloud into Gamepass Ultimate (like most are assuming), then for $14.99 or even $19.99 a month (assuming they increase the price) I can stream a huge selection of games to my phone. I don't need to own an Xbox. That's a far better package than what Google is currently pitching for Stadia IMO. Of course, xCloud also extends availability for those who DO own an Xbox and are already part of the ecosystem. Really, they just need to get the service working on more devices (web browser, iOS, etc...). As long as Microsoft offers xCloud to people who do not own an Xbox (of course they will), these are not two different things at all. And I really think Microsoft is currently in a better position to give people what they want out of a game streaming service which is a Netflix-like subscription for games.

I can't speak for every case and every publishing agreement out there obviously, but I believe generally contracts define the dev percentage against the total revenue the publisher receives connected to the game minus specifically defined costs (platform fees, taxes, advance recoup, etc...). In those cases, exclusivity payment from Epic would absolutely be included and the devs would be entitled to their same, agreed upon percentage.

Thread Iron Harvest (Crowdfunded game and published by Deep Silver) is now refusing to say if they will release the game on Steam for non-backers
That's probably unlikely. Most contracts would (should) be structured/worded in a way where the dev would be owed the same percentage of the upfront, EGS money as revenue generated by actual sales. Honestly, I would think in order for publishers to get around this they would have to include a clause in the agreement specifically stating that the dev waives any rights to payments received for platform exclusivity deals.

Well... they did an extremely poor job in explaining how the service works/what you get as evidenced by all of the posters here asking what games Pro includes afterwards. I kind of feel like they were intentionally vague in that presentation regarding how it works--they didn't want to come out and explicitly say "You pay $9.99 a month and then you have to buy all of your games on top of that." One could interpret they vagueness as a lack of confidence in their own offering...

That ending was so well-executed. The music is incredible. The slow mo shots of the Night King walking towards Bran had my mind racing... what's going to happen when he reaches Bran? Will he kill him? Will it be revealed they have a deeper connection? And the misdirection of the cuts to Jon Snow, pinned down by the dragon, were really the icing on the cake. I never saw it coming. My jaw hit the floor when Arya killed the Night King. Regardless of how you actually feel about it from a narrative standpoint, then entire sequence was flawlessly executed. Really awesome stuff. I have zero issues with Arya being the one to kill the Night King. Considering who she is and what she's been through I think the story has "earned" her ability to get the drop on the Night King like she did. However, I do hope we learn more about who the Night King is/was, who Bran is, and their connection. At least some type of exposition dump from Bran afterwards. It would be a huge oversight not to explain things more.

That video is nuts. Interesting thing I noticed is that the player basically never stands still... always moving, always attacking, which is how I think the dev team intended for the game to be played. It also seems to help with/mitigate the off-screen projectiles.

I'm looking forward to checking this out. Quick question, somewhat related... I'm playing NG:B on XBOX One X right now and I can't bring up the 360 Guide... pressing both the View and Menu buttons at the same time actually reboots the game... is this a know thing or is there another way to bring up the 360 Guide?

Ugh... I buy everything that I can as physical for Switch... but, there's no point in buying physical when the majority of the game has to be downloaded anyway. I don't care about using up my storage space... I just like having a physical copy that contains the entire game. Not sure what I'll do now. Possibly get it on PC where I can run it at 60fps completely maxed out, but it will see significantly less playtime than if I buy it on Switch...

For this kind of game I would possibly be ok with a locked 30fps and better visuals. However, something about the camera movement in this build just feels off to me at 30fps... it appears really juddery to me at times. I’ve been playing in performance mode instead. I’m actually impressed how good it still looks even though it’s being upscaled.

I played about 2 hours. Seems to be a solid port both in handheld and docked (played a bit of both)! Performance mode is definitely the way to go though. Presentation mode doesn't seem to hold a steady 30fps. There's also this weird judder or something present during camera movement... not sure what's going on there. Anyway, game is still awesome and it's amazing to have this on Switch!

Thread Kickstarter - Did you back any games? Were you happy with the results?
I've backed various games over the years... backed what became Broken Age and Republique. Never played either haha. Actually, I never even redeemed my codes for them. More recently I've backed Flynn Son of Crimson, Hazelnut Bastille, and LUNARK. None of those have released yet, but I'll certainly play those. I don't back at super high tiers (enough to get the game and pay for a couple extra goodies so that the devs get some extra money towards dev), so I don't worry about it too much. I understand that it's a risk and I'm not promised anything. All in all, I think Kickstarter for games is great. A lot of great games that wouldn't exist otherwise have been made and released thanks to Kickstarter. That outweighs the disappointments for me.Hey, thanks! :) Was hoping to see more Bushiden backers LOL

Thread WSJ: Nintendo to Launch Two New Switch Models. Premium "Enhanced" Model and Cheaper Portable Model.
I totally get wanting to pull in new people with a cheaper model. The "Pro" model is more what I'm questioning. The $300+ I'm going to spend on that as an existing Switch owner could instead be spent on software which is a far larger profit driver. Also, they sold a lot of Switches in 2018. Now, not even a year later, they are basically saying "That $300 device you just bought is on it's way out! Here's the new Switch for the future!" It just seems a bit early to me for a Pro model. And it's not like sales are struggling and need a shot in the arm... BUT... I have no experience in selling hardware of any kind and no market data to go off of, so what do I know? LOL

Thread WSJ: Nintendo to Launch Two New Switch Models. Premium "Enhanced" Model and Cheaper Portable Model.
Two new models at once seems like a strange move... with the way the Switch has been selling I'm not sure a "Pro" or "Enhanced" model is even needed yet... I can see them wanting to add a cheaper model to bring more people in though. I'm not necessarily excited for either of these new versions, but could definitely end up picking one up depending on price and what they offer.

Thread Phil Harrison: Stadia starts an "inevitable and one-way shift" away from consoles | gameindustry.biz
Yeah, they need to develop and promote games that leverage the uniqueness of the platform asap. Games that are only possible on something like Stadia because a developer can have multiple units of the "hardware" running a single instance of the game. In my opinion, that's how you get "gamers" on-board and get them to overlook the shortcomings of the platform. I'm also super curious about pricing... is it a subscription or are you outright buying games the way we do now? Maybe a combination of the two? I'm guessing the latter is most likely.

Interesting. I don't know much about what went on in the beta. I'm not suggesting it's going to be a failure... Thread Prediction - Google will reveal a cheap streaming only device tomorrow and era will wrongly assume its a failing business model
I'm kind of struggling to identify the market for this. At absolute best the performance is equivalent to actual hardware running locally and gets worse from there. From an economics perspective, I'm debating whether someone who can't afford a $300 PS4 or Xbox can afford a $100 streaming box with a $15 a month (or more) subscription fee... I really think that these large companies (Microsoft, Google, etc..) have invested so much money into data centers and are trying to find ways generate revenue/turn a profit on them. As a result, they are pushing game streaming (even if it's not ready or even necessary).

Yeah, the very first time I played that stage it crashed my graphics card (RX 480 8GB). It seems there's an issue with the water on that stage. Thread RUMOR: Microsoft Preparing Xbox App & GamePass for Nintendo Switch (Direct-Feed Games)
Well, that's what I'm getting at by saying I'd love to know the details. With the way Nintendo software is selling on Switch, it's not crazy to say they are making more money by selling $60 games then they would by taking a percentage of a $10 a month subscription. Additionally, you are opening your platform up to a competitor to come in and potentially eat into your game sales/profits. I would imagine this partnership, if real, goes deeper and Nintendo could possibly be looking to offload all online services (online play, friends, chat, etc...) to Xbox Live. There HAS to be more to it than "revenue share of GamePass" for Nintendo to be willing to open up their platform to a competitor.

Thread Switch owners how are your Joycons holding up
No drifting on either set of joycons, but right right joycon from my neon yellow set (which I bought just a few months ago) has the disconnect issue... super annoying. It happens even when my docked Switch is less than 3ft away. It *seems* to happen if I hold the joycons down in my lap and the top of my desk is "in between" the joycon and the dock. The desk top is made of concrete, so maybe that is part of the issue, but my neon red/blue joycons that came with the system don't exhibit this behavior at all. I had planned to buy the red/blue joycons (so I could do all red or all blue), but now I'm not sure I want to spend the $70 after seeing how the neon yellow have worked out.

For me, exploring and unlocking the map is the real hook to this game. It's also enjoyable when you end up revisiting through older areas from the beginning of the game and are now powerful enough to just plow through all the enemies. However, the game is very charitable with leveling up, so you don't really have to do anything to accomplish that other than to just continue playing.
