Here's Link's bracer. Notice the rings on his fingers:
Here's the Green Hand's bracer. Notice the lack of rings:
And finally, check out Ganondorf's hand - with the rings identical to those found on Link:

ThreadWhich Legend of Zelda game do you believe has the best story/writing?
I 10000000% agree with this
I think people get hung up on "plot" with BotW, which is almost non-existant. But the actual writing (and especially the character writing) is actually the most grounded and nuanced over any of the other Zeldas (including Majora's Mask).
Majora's Mask has some amazing narrative threads, even if it's executed a bit more...idk, ham-fisted-ly?
And for SS, I've honestly never understood the praise for its story. It's confusing, poorly paced, and very, very "anime". The only character with actual development is Groose, but even so he's relegated to having almost no bearing on the actual plot. Link is...Link, and Zelda is a damsel waifu.
So I voted BotW in the poll and I'm not sorry haha

I'm curious about the markings on him too - I don't feel like they're scarring/corruption from the Malice somehow. They look too...deliberate? And the colors are a dark green + a darker green (it's hard to see but there's varying colors even within the completely saturated part of his forearm).
They match a lot of the Zonai patterns we've been seeing. I feel like they're more related to his new powers - perhaps every time he gains a new ability, the designs spread?
In the shot of him here:
You can see a little bit of the patterns on his chest, but it seems like they don't stretch as extensively as they do here, which basically goes down to his waist:
So idk, I think it'll be some sort of physical representation of his powers growing.

I'm like, the complete opposite of you, haha.
BotW is actually my favorite Zelda story because it feels so much more grounded than the other games. Granted, the execution could have been better, but I loved what was presented and found it very poignant and relatable in a way that the other games just...weren't.
However, I'm also someone who LOVES character-driven narratives. I want Link to talk, badly. I really, really hope he speaks in the sequel, and at this point I feel like there are no good reasons for him to. As long as he's well-written, it can only elevate his character and the narrative as a whole.
ThreadThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel Trailer - Coming 2022
Totally. I personally hope for some sort of role reversal, or at least having both sides be more morally gray than we're used to. Take this infamous shot from the first trailer:
Without knowing the tropes or any other context, it looks like "Ganondorf" is the victim here - his silhouette is coded to appear more sympathetic (more rounded, organic shapes) versus the sinister looking silhouette of the hand (angular, irregular, elongated) that's looming above him.
I hope that the hand - or whatever ends up being Link's interpersonal force/motivation, isn't as cut/dry "good", and Ganondorf isn't simply "bad".
Imagine for example, if we were to revisit the idea of the "Curse of Demise" - perhaps rather than manifesting as a particular evil individual (Ganondorf), it is more interested in sowing chaos and discord by influencing two indestructible forces ("Power" vs. "Courage") to try and destroy each other, and it is up to Zelda ("Wisdom") to figure that out and be the balancing force.
ThreadNintendo is doing a poor job selling me on Skyward Sword HD
This is exactly how I feel about Skyward Sword.
I remember feeling really underwhelmed during the reveal and ensuing marketing cycle, but convinced myself that maybe I'd like it because a new 3D Zelda release was always basically a holiday for me.
My first thought booting it up in 2011 was "this feels like a game that could have come out 5-6 years ago". Like, the gameplay design felt dated to me already.
It took me a year and a half to finally get around to beating it, and that was only out of sheer deterministic will because "Zelda". The entire game reeked of "we need to design a whole game around a specific mechanic, and it has to be at least 60 hours long and time is running out to finish this". I get the impression that the whole thing was developed in maybe like, 2 years of active game dev time.

ThreadThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel Trailer - Coming 2022
I'm with you on that!
I think shenanigans happen that separate Link & Zelda (maybe they each think the other is dead or trapped) and they each have to progress their own missions/story to be reunited. We're seeing glimpses of Link's "story"/path, but they're probably hiding Zelda's from us for the time being.
ThreadThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel Trailer - Coming 2022
Here's my theories/predictions thus far:
-There will be an "As above, so below" theme.
-Both Link & Zelda will have either specific gameplay sections, or co-op.
-Link's gameplay will = spiritual energy/the supernatural, and Zelda's will be technology & modernity
-Greater focus on story
In the beginning section, Link gets infected by Malice, and perhaps Zelda or someone else figures out that the only way to save him is to fuse his arm with the bracelet & tattoo things from that "Zonai hand". This essentially gives him Danny Phantom + Prince of Persia powers.

I have a feeling Link will be able to transform into a "spiritual" form - there are several points where he seems to be able to phase out of a physical form and instead turn kinda ghosty. Maybe he'll be like Danny Phantom.
Heck, what if, in addition to phasing through walls and such, he's able to possess certain objects? Like the shot of the golem - it had that same green energy flowing through it as flows around Link when he went through the ground. Perhaps that's him possessing it?

Game development is a long and complicated process during which time many, many changes and iterations and experimentation happens. It only leads to disaster if gamers are aware of every half-step forward and 5000 steps back that a project takes, especially as they rarely understand the reasons behind these decisions.
So it just makes sense that things are under wraps until the vision is clear and the overall structure of the project is more or less finalized.

Of course I'm personally crossing fingers for a TGA reveal. I've been thirsty for this game before it was even revealed.
True, though it's missable that they crystallize her first - the "hooooly shit this is MESSED UPPPPPP" effect was still in full swing for me during the scene when Ethan wipes off the jar that reveals it's her HEAD in there.
I was legit like, "no way - open the jar maybe it's a copout" lol.
Also the entire concept of the fetus monster thing was already pretty freaking dark.
what's really strange though is that the car actually stops??
Man, this game made me actually want of Ethan and Rose. I really hope they continue their story, I haven't been this invested in RE characters since...RE4 Leon I guess but that was mainly due to teenage thirst ngl
Despite the story making no logical sense once you think about it for longer than like 30 seconds, I probably found it one of the most engaging RE stories thus far, and the ending was super emotionally resonant.
I just have a few random questions:Based on the ending I kinda feel like Rose will be the next protagonist, and Ethan will be a big guiding presence through the mold connection, kinda like in Dr. Sleep. The way she spoke "to" him at his grave, as well as how she said "I know" as a response to being told how much like him she is felt like she really him.
I think the little weird flashes Ethan got picking up the flask also points to how their consciousnesses are connected, since it seemed like he was seeing the world from her point of view for a sec.
Also the fact that the far away figure is Ethan at the end of the game feels deliberate. They wouldn't use his character model as a placeholder knowing that mods exist, and knowing how deep the community likes to go into the lore.

Even "friendlier" versions of it like Goron City from BotW or the Volcano level from the original Pokemon Snap make me wanna get them over with as soon as possible.

It really felt like a rushed, uninspired game.Of course it had some charm to it, as all Zelda's do - and Impa's design is literally my favorite thing in the series. But I...don't see people who were onboarded into the series via BotW liking this very much.

Thread[Zelda Dungeon] Diversity in Zelda: The Need for a Black Princess Zelda
I agree with you. It's a similar concept to me as when people say "make Link a girl/make Zelda the knight". It's a lazy answer to diversity.
I would a black/brown main character, but I want them to be that way, so that the way they navigate the world is reflected in that identity. Of course I'm not saying that they need to be constantly "othered", but I want to be able to relate to them as a BIPOC in more than just "reskin of character".
Thread[Zelda Dungeon] Diversity in Zelda: The Need for a Black Princess Zelda
I mean, there's more to being a BIPOC/visible minority than racism/discrimination - for example, perhaps you have certain cultural references and therefore perspectives that differ from the majority. Or, perhaps others expect you to, but you actually don't. Maybe there's curiosity or assumptions regarding your features/lineage, etc etc
I don't really get why anytime the idea of the BIPOC experience is mentioned, people think it has to be tied with trauma/discomfort. There can be a richness with it as well. Or it can be a neutral experience!
For example, one way this could be written in a Zelda setting is say all of a sudden, a Gerudo girl is born with the Triforce of Wisdom, and it turns out she somehow has lineage to the Royal Family. How would she react to this revelation, and how would the world of Hyrule react to it? How would the story and her character development change versus if she were just a typical Hylian princess?
There's many ways to engage with the topic more deeply without necessarily making a grand statement about racism/discrimination/the Black struggle.
ThreadIf Zelda were playable in a mainline TLoZ title, would you want her to be have sword+shield (or other such weapons) as an option?
It'd be kinda lame and uninspired if they just made her a Link clone.

Make her a techie who prefers controlling robotics from a distance, but can also finagle cool stuff like a mech or exoskeleton or something!
ThreadSo I'm resuming with my playthrough of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and I feel like the story is... better than BOTW? Better than most KT games?
I think the story in AoC is better and more plot-focused, but I rather disagree that it's a better story.
There's something really poignant about the themes and character journeys presented in BoTW that actually has it as my favorite Zelda narrative ever, but the fact that its so lacking in structure + the barebones presentation of it doesn't do it justice. If they'd really committed to fully exploring each character and giving us time to get to know them - as well as allow Link to be fleshed out in actual cutscenes vs. journals + dialogue with NPCs, I think a lot of people would feel differently from how they do now.
While AoC's cutscenes were a HUGE step up in terms of cinematography and exciting plot beats, somehow the story itself felt more...shallow? Like there was less to dive in on. The only exception is how they centered Zelda's entire character, which I loved how human she felt and how they didn't fridge her in favor of having Link save the day.

I've always disliked being confined for long periods of time in dungeons and caves and sewers in games, so the idea of an entire game of that sounds oppressive.
Anyway, there are multiple ways to interpret Aonumas quote. If they use the same Hyrule, then I'm kinda banking on a timeskip (say 5-10 years, or just enough for civilization to develop a bit), or the overworld being disrupted like was hinted at in the trailer.

ThreadAge of Calamity: How the story changes allowed for a massive step forward in the Zelda series, and a tough realization about Link (OPEN SPOILERS)
Honestly, maybe this sounds dramatic, but Link's shoehorned presence in AoC is mainly what held the story back for me.
They did an job crafting this high-stakes story where the threat truly feels always 2 steps ahead, and that it's testing these vibrant, human characters to their limits - particularly with Zelda herself - and then you have "oh yeah and the knight that seals the darkness" who has 3 actions throughout the whole thing: staring blankly, nodding while staring blankly, and destroying stuff.
The whole blank character self-insert thing feels sooo outdated at this point. It feels even more frustrating, because they gave him a very specific personality in BotW. He has full conversations with certain NPC's (literally with one dialogue choice), and all of his dialogue is pretty consistently spicy and playful.
On top of that, in the Making of a Champion book, it mentions how he underwent a personality change after his amnesia. So he definitely has a personality, and definitely isn't mute...it's not a huge leap for the team to just...commit this to cutscenes as well.

Glad to see some companies are adopting this flexibility permanently. Ubisoft has had "flextime" in certain studios for a while, so it's cool to see this slowly becoming standard.

Shoe-horned is a good word for it. He's like....unnecessary the way they have him. AoC especially makes him feel completely irrelevant.
In BotW his interactions and dialogue with NPCs and stuff added a lot of charm - enough to make him endearing (outside of cutscenes).
But here, there's just...nothing.
If the game is gonna be him + Zelda and he's gonna be all silent and dumb the entire time...man. I just can't think of any good reason to have that.

78 - 82. It depends on how polished the gameplay is, and how compelling the story & presentation is imo.

The fact that they did this study and presented it internally is a huge first step towards changing the company's entire editorial direction, and I love to see it. I think it'll take time, but it's a promising shift.

From an idealistic perspective, it be a huge shame for it to release any later than 2022, especially if they wanna keep the momentum of an episodic format that keeps new players on board.

ThreadHyrule Warriors Age of Calamity Demo out today! (Save carries over to full game)

Link's intro to Impa...so just from then on he's with them? no scene of them introducing themselves? how come Zelda just casually popped out? how/why did they get from Mission 1 to mission 2? the narration felt kinda tossed in. 100% with you on the story framing. it's like...random snapshots with no time to set up the context. It's been 3 years since BoTW, and I'd imagine a few people might play this without BoTW knowledge. Why does each character intro feel like a cameo?

Also what struck me as strange is in the very first cutscene, there's an intro that isn't voiced?? Which feels really disjointed and strange, especially with the fact that a narrator exists in other parts of the demo.
Either it's a strange choice, or they purposefully left out that voice for spoiler reasons?

ThreadAge of Calamity will bring to light the underlooked fact that BotW is the most lore/story heavy Zelda by a MILE
Yeah, I think they're really bad about giving us conflicting messages on this, but I kinda feel like they've been moving away from that "Player = Link" .
Like Link just straight up doesn't emote in cutscenes, but his dialogue prompts are full of a very specific personality, as are his animations. Then you've got the Japanese version, in which the Quest log is entirely in 1st person and gives his perspective of each quest (I also get the impression that the game's flavor text is from his perspective too, but the JP is too complicated for me).
Also the tomes that Neiteio mentions paint a specific picture of Link as well. So in BoTW I don't think he's supposed to be an avatar at all, but that the team is taking half-measures.
ThreadAge of Calamity will bring to light the underlooked fact that BotW is the most lore/story heavy Zelda by a MILE
Except Link is closer to the first pic than the 2nd.
If they want an avatar then make an avatar. Link is clearly a specific character with defined traits and a backstory and motivations (just look at the internet's counter reaction if ever there are discussions about him straying from the white male blonde/brown-haired design).
At this point they need to stop trying to walk the fence - it's awkward and outdated and for me, the main thing that holds the presentation back.

ThreadHyrule Warriors : Age of Calamity will not have online multiplayer. It’s 2020. How is this acceptable.
While online would DEFINITELY be nice to have , I'm sure it came down to what they could feasibly deliver on time.
They probably prioritized things other than online - which is REALLY hard to deliver with a good QoS - in the turnaround that they had, and figured that it was an acceptable sacrifice. The amount of people who actually do online multiplayer is probably so negligible that it wasn't worth the effort.
I totally understand the disappointment and I think it's really fair to find it a shame, but I also understand the constraints and debates that go behind these decisions so I'm not outraged.

honestly, that's fair - I really dont know enough about the film or the creator's backstory to make such a claim.
I was under the knee jerk assumption that this film was yet another entry in a long line of pseudo-tragic, "loss of innocence" coming of age stories which to be Frank I'm really, really tired of.
And while I dont know that this film isn't that, I'm also happy that a black Muslim woman is empowered to tell her story in French cinema. So you're right, and I retract that sentiment from earlier.
ThreadNetflix releasing Cuties, based on the story of a refugee who is torn between traditional values and internet culture; has very questionable marketing
Honestly, the trope of a girl's "coming of age" being intrinsically tied with sexuality and "loss of innocence" - usually at an UNCOMFORTABLY young age is one of the things i hate the most.
And yes, it's a SUPER present theme in French cinema since...as long as I can remember.
This one has the lovely addition of the "I must emancipate myself from my oppressive roots!" trope that I've seen in the few French films that feature minorities too. Ugh. Why can't we have movies/shows/novels about young girls being goofy kids and doing goofy kid shit? Why does there always have to be this awful "lolita" angle to it?? Why can't a French film feature a BIPOC as a regular person and not this tragic conflicted figure??
I'm so sick of all of this, man.
ThreadNetflix releasing Cuties, based on the story of a refugee who is torn between traditional values and internet culture; has very questionable marketing
To be honest, I don't know enough about the film or the director to have a very valid opinion - though I really don't want to engage with the film more than I have to. But I do think that the director being Senegalese Muslim origin doesn't absolve her of potential criticism.
Idk - French twitter wants to defend the film and the director and claims Netflix did the film dirty. I still have reservations, but I concede that unless I watch the film and read interviews with the Director (which I don't really wanna do), I could stand corrected.
Either way - I just...don't really feel it's a message we NEED.

ThreadThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel Development Thread- News, Updates, and Speculation
Seems like from their comments that they've had a more or less clear idea of where they wanted to go in terms of story for a while now, so it kinda feels like this time maybe both story and gameplay were concieved around the same time.
Even reading the Creative a Champion book, it was SUPER apparent how much lore and backstory they had for this world that they just...couldn't or didn't fit in-game, so now this is their chance to expand on all that.
I just hope they got like, a proper writer. While I liked the more grounded, "human" approach to BoTW, the actual delivery and cutscene direction left a lot to be desired. There was so much "tell" rather than "show, and the dialog often felt stilted and unnatural (beyond VA performance).
I think that they've listened to feedback though - I especially trust the Zelda team to do so - and I hope they take inspiration from how other AAA games push presentation and narrative and challenge themselves in that way.
We KNOW they can make kick-ass game design - let's see if they can make an emotionally resonant story with compelling and nuanced characters.
ThreadWhy women criticise sexualised character designs |OT2| I have no pants and I must scream (READ OP)
Re: FF7R, aside from some gratuitous character design (though to be somewhat fair they also have rediculous male character design too, so not as bad), I actually feel that female characters were handled pretty well all in all. I love that Jessie is so straightforward in her thirst (which may or may not be partially a power play to make Cloud uncomfortable), and I think Tifa lays a great foundation for an interesting character arc in later installments. Aerith is lovely - there's more to her than meets the eye and I find her super intriguing and layered.
Honestly my biggest problem with a character is actually Barrett, who I really wish - as the only black character -- wasn't so loud and abbrasive.
Also it's nice that when characters are depicted as minors, they REALLY look like minors - i.e. devoid of creepy sexual overtones like in a lot of other Japanese media.
But that's just my take.

Okay, so I'm both biased and salty since I literally work here, BUT
While Ubi has had a general huge HR failure and unsafe work culture for women and minorities that it refused to address until literally now (I speak as both), this is not specific to Ubi. The game industry in general is full of gross behavior at the expense of anyone not white/male.
Now that they've gotten rid of Serge and Cecile and others, and now that I've seen 1st hand an effort from HR teams and Yves to atone and address these issues, I am cautiously optimistic. I hope this results in Ubi becoming the inclusive safe haven it's pretended to be all this time.

my hope is that investors pressure Yves to make him step down. I see micro changes - at least in certain studios - but until they axe him + all his cronies I remain very skeptical.
but yeah even in this forum the response has been lukewarm/disinterested. I've seen more hullabaloo about ND and crunch culture than this.

it can be. there are a lot of wonderful, talented people and you learn a LOT.
but there is a general culture (that, to be fair, exists all over the gaming industry) that is deeply unfriendly to women and minorities. ThreadDo you prefer when your player character is an avatar for you, or their own defined character?
How interesting/appealing the main character is to me is one of the principal draws for me in choosing to play a (story driven) game.
I want to be able to empathize with a character who has inherently different motivations and drives than me, and see how the world reacts to them. A well defined character allows me to access and resonate with the world with so much more depth than an avatar.
The only draw for me of avatars is getting to create a representation of yourself if you are from a group who rarely gets that, but it feels shallow to me since your experience in the game world isnt affected by that identity. I'd rather just have more diverse defined characters lol.

It's an open secret that Serge does heinous shit. We're all playing "6 degrees of sexual assault". The top echelon is ruled like a mafia by men who go to each other's bbq's on the weekend. How can you speak out against someone powerful when it goes to their (equally gross) friends to judge?
So they absolutely need to axe ALL of those guys, and bring in a diverse group of people Yves hasn't been friends with for 20 years.
I hope shareholders will force this change now that it's visibly damaging the brand.
ThreadIs it me or is Nintendo being strangely quiet?
Seems like they could be revising their general marketing strategy - I wouldn't be surprised if there's been an internal "changing of the guards" in terms of marketing leads, so until they decide to launch those plans things are sorta barebones/on autopilot.
(also of course Covid, but a lot of companies are now getting back up to speed)
I don't get the knee-jerk hyperbolic reactions in defense of them here - they being objectively quiet.
Screw it, let's go
I want to believe change - real, systemic change - will be made. I've already seen a few acts of good faith, which has stood in stark contrast to how cases were treated before, generally.
Edito has always been a den of snakes. The choice to hire a team of all white, all male VPs was not well recieved, and let's see how they replace some of these people - who are the CORE of this toxic behavior. As of now I'm still unsure about what their proposed solution will be. The most disappointing thing is if they replace them with people JUST as complicit as before.
I want to see HR teams in every studio who don't minimize complaints or sweep them under the rug, I want to see general education on what is and isn't okay in terms of interactions with female employees and players...
We will see. I love Ubisoft, and there are many, many wonderful people here, but things are not okay. I hope we can become a new example/standard for a truly safe, inclusive work environment in this industry, but as of now I remain skeptical.
My image of Cloud before having played FFVIIR (and now OG FFVII) was a generic anime emo twunk from the 90's/early 2000's era.
What we get is a very endearing tryhard twunk who subverts a lot of these tropes and has a legitimately interesting character arc.
So yeah, I stan my boy Cloud.

Hmmm, I see.
Okay see this is also something - what is his "real personality"? Like I know he's obviously an awkward try-hard who comes off as kind of a dick pre-awakening, but then after it seems like he's just more chill and has a less fragile ego.Ah, i didnt make that connection, but now that you mention it i'm sure it'll come back in that way! However, if that's the case - then why is Jessie's dad essentially a vegetable while Cloud is...more or less functional, just as a really "off" dude?
I find the way that the OG frames his backstory super awkward. Sephiroth's info is literally all we have to go on at that point, and it's not made clear that he's bending the truth. Curious how they'll explain it in Part 2. I wonder if they might even tweak it?
ThreadPokémon gives tone deaf response to BLM protests as Nintendo stays silent
I HOPE Nintendo's silence is due to going through 500 steps of validation for a PR statement like some companies are doing and not a hope to be "non political"
But wtf Pokemon lol. I wish Twitter had a dislike button
ThreadNintendo is double-matching staff donations to the Black Lives Matter Movement, also has stayed silent all day #BlackoutTuesday
I'm sorry but judging by a lot of the responses we've been getting on Twitter from showing support, those "PR statements" mean a hell of a lot right now.
Black voices have been gaslit and silenced up until now. Y'all can be dismissive about "fake wokeness" but I know that every word added in the sea of solidarity takes a bit more of that burden off black people themselves.
Nintendo needs to say something. This isnt the time to play coy about their action (or inaction).

Those Twitter replies are precisely why it's important for these companies to also speak up - voicing support for BLM right now is not "empty platitudes" but important, much needed words.

ThreadFinal Fantasy VII Remake Easter Eggs, QoL Tips and other Neat Things (FULL OPEN SPOILERS)
Hey y'all!
I'm playing through the original and JUST got to Aeriths death (I thought I was ready and I wasnt :c ) and there were a couple of moments that were wtf to me and I'm curious how they'll be handled in the Remake.
1. Clouds bizarre breakdown in front of the mural at the Temple of the Ancients.
What was that about? When did he snap back? I'm confused at the execution so if anyone can describe that scene in clearer terms it'd be helpful, because I think the translations were super awkward here.
2. Did Cloud all of a sudden start wailing on Aerith?? wtf? Also seemed like he had like an inner version of himself as a little boy crying and trying to stop him? And who was saying "dont be afraid", it doesnt make sense in that scenario.
I wonder how they'll handle it in the remake...this could be super triggering and upsetting if handled the wrong way, and could "ruin" Cloud's character for some people. He doesnt seem apologetic enough after, imo.
3. Cait Siths "death": why was he sad if his body is just a "toy"? why is he still in my party I thought he got smooshed lol
ThreadDo you think Mikami took command of Ghostwire: Tokyo as director after Nakamura's departure?
Somehow I can't help but feel they had a falling out of some sort. Personally I don't see someone leaving a project they'd have the chance to helm - especially so soon after publicly "owning" it - willingly. Also the way she's sort of bouncing around different studios -- feels like she's looking for new roots.
But who knows...

I...was confused? But I didn't hate it. I've never played the original.
The fights were awesome and it felt very grand and mysterious and satisfying, but it also felt like there were a lot of things that were intentionally obtuse to the point of being almost frustrating (wtf was that scene with Sephiroth at the edge of reality? And the whole "7 seconds" line - WHAT DOES THAT MEEEEANNNN???)
But overall I thought it was a very cool climax to an amazing game, and I'm excited (though slightly apprehensive - PLEASE MAKE SENSE EVENTUALLY) for what's to come next.
ThreadDid you like Final Fantasy VII Remake's ending? [POLL] [SPOILERS]
But then why does he say something like "what will you do with it" and "enough for you, maybe' about it? Like implying that Cloud could play god and create a new reality or something? I didn't read the chapter description though, I'll check it out.

ThreadFinal Fantasy VII Remake SPOILERS Thread, Part 2: Stay Kalm & Mosey Along
Okay y'all I'm playing the OG and I might rustle some jimmies but
I'm pretty happy with all the story changes/possible changes in the remake so far?
I'm only at Costa del Sol, so I've got a while to go, but the characters' personalities and general chemistry is pretty barebones. I imagine it will grow as it goes on, and that it's partially due to the lackluster localization which can make things confusing, but I'm even more impressed with how they were able to iterate on so many things from the source material so far.
Also, the game design thankfully changed a lot. There are a lot of just really odd design choices that are unclear and just a pain (catching chocobos - i did the save skip hack for the giant snake thing, hiding from the guards in the Shinra building, the freakin MARCHING minigame, giving a little girl CPR), as well as what to do next being...not clear either. For example, I missed Hojo chillin on the beach (which wtf, how are they gonna adapt that lmao) because i rested at an in and so was confused as to where my party was and what those random ppl on the beach were talking about.
Anyhoo, I'm interested in where the story will go and I wanna get eventual references when Part 2 comes out so I continue. But as someone playing this without nostalgia goggles...I'm even more impressed by the Remake.

Honestly they did SUCH a good job with the nuance of his character - it would have been so easy to just have him be a flat, emo, obnoxiously "cool" anime protag completely unironically, but instead it's obvious he's super insecure and he acts in a way an edgy teenage boy would THINK is cool.
He reminds me of soo many cringy dudes from high-school/middle school and I'm here for it.
ThreadSo square can make drastic changes to FF7 in the remake but couldn't be bothered to not make Barrett an ignorant racist caricature? (Read Threadmarks)
No, I'm saying that while they're allowed their point of view, there is a very unfortunate tendency for people to go "Oh, well this one black person is cool with it, so that means all the other people saying that they DO have a problem with it are wrong!"
But I guess all we can have are these bad-faith arguments and defensiveness instead of taking the time to understand that people's discomfort with the character is valid even if you personally don't find it offensive.
ThreadTetsuya Nomura: " If we divide (FF7R) into large parts, it'll take longer to make, [...] Faster development if parts are smaller" (SPOILERS)
Am I the only one who doesn't really need it to be open world? I'd rather they focus on the tight story telling, beautiful character models and animations, and pretty environments over freedom of movement.
Linear game design has real upsides, and I think it worked perfectly for this game.

Can I just point out that curiously pretty much every supposed black person who sees nothing wrong with Barret's character has prefaced their post with "As a black man"...
Also, just because some black people are cool with this type of representation doesn't automatically erase everything problematic with his portrayal.
You can like the game and even like Barret while acknowedging that he personifies some harmful stereotypes that they honestly could have down without. He would have been a MUCH stronger character were he more realistic and measured.
ThreadSo square can make drastic changes to FF7 in the remake but couldn't be bothered to not make Barrett an ignorant racist caricature? (Read Threadmarks)
And now it's being used to dismiss the other (largely black) people who DO feel it's problematic. Hence the rest of my post.
ThreadFF7 Remake's characters are wonderful and so much more fleshed out than before
I agree so much, especially with how I actually get more clingy/handy vibes from Cloud's side than Tifa's.
Tifa looks to me like she's being gentle but keeping her distance, the way you'd do with a wild animal you care about, but Cloud seems to be trying to bring her closer in ways that I feel he doesnt yet understand and isn't emotionally equipped to handle.
Strangely enough I didn't feel the characters here all revolved around Cloud (except maybe a bit Aerith but she seems intentional in involving him in that way).
They all felt like they had full lives of their own and personal reasons for joining Cloud on this journey.
Also, just one point I notice a lot on this forum: A female character doesn't need to be angry/brash or even physically strong to be a "strong" or well written female character. I think in general this game did pretty well with having the female characters feel on even footing with the male ones, and i'm usually pretty vigilant on these things.
ThreadFF7 Remake's characters are wonderful and so much more fleshed out than before
I'm new to the franchise, and I fell absolutely in love with all the characters. Cloud is a dick but also obviously tryhard where it's kinda cute, Tifa is warm and caring, Aerith is quirky in the best way, and Barret is endearing and soft hearted (even if the execution has me side eyeing a bit but we won't get into that here)
I'm so excited to see how Tifa and Cloud's relationship blossoms, how Aerith reveals more of what's up her sleeves, how Barret will perhaps take a more nuanced view of the world, etc.
I want more of these guys, and I can't wait to get it.

His voice + personality combo is racist, yes.
The fact that he is also undeniably coded as black makes it worse.
This is a separate issue from his personality/character developement.
I don't know your race or background, but he doesn't seem racist to you - congratulations.
To a lot of people of color here (myself included), his depiction stings. It's a stain on an otherwise amazing game. I don't care if he ends up being likeable (and I did end up finding him endearing, as I've said in a previous post). Doesn't change the fact that he heavily pulls from hurtful black stereotypes that just...shouldn't be there.

I played the game. I was less making a point about Cloud as a character specifically and more about visual tropes.
Why does Cloud, a lithe pretty white boy, look the way he does and have a backstory resulting in the cool, quiet personality he has, versus Barrett?

Being hardline is fine, but the truth of the matter is, why does the hardline, loud, angry character ALSO have to be a big, hulking black man?
Cloud also seemingly got his life fucked up by Shinra. As did Tifa. Why aren't THEY loud and angry?
Why is the main black representation so heavily reliant on this tired ass trope?

I felt like I was the only one bothered by this.
Yes, he ends up being likeable and whatnot, but could they have just NOT made the ONE black main character super loud and angry?
If he looked like, say Sephiroth, would he still have that same personality?
Also the fact that he's kinda "childlike" in his black or white morality...I LOVED this game but Barrett was a big yikes from me.

BoTW2 - whether meant to be the big Holiday game or not - will be one of the biggest flagship games of the Switch's life. They're gonna want to play their cards as close to the chest as humanly possible there.

I really don't understand the take of "oh it's bad optics, gotta wait til the pandemic is over".
A business - especially one that provides a service that would be especially useful when large populations are confined at home - is not going to just...stop because it might look bad.
They are going to have business as usual as much as possible, perhaps with a PR spin of "let us help you ride this out the best we can!"
If they continue marketing operations and production, they will.
ThreadNintendo Direct Speculation |OT6| OT7 Has Been Rated in Korea
I think the games industry is one of the better equipped ones to be less affected by something like this - a lot of devs are able to remotely access our computers, and for now I know my company hasn't anticipated any major disruption in our services or production - but obviously that could change.
Japan seems intent for now on pretending they'll have this under control enough to not even cancel the Olympics, so I'd honestly be surprised if Nintendo doesn't adopt the same "show must go on" attitude.

As thirsty as I am for certain things, I actually don't like the principle of leaks.or allusions to potential things to look forward to can be a fun generator of discussion and actually help pad out the time during communication blackouts. Something akin to an Emily or Nate assuring us 2020 will be a good year - these sorts of statements don't spoil surprises, or ruin a carefully planned editorial calendar. It's a huge blow to everyone - marketing, devs, executives - when a project they're excited to show off is leaked. You don't have control of the message anymore, and one of the coolest payoffs of working in this industry, seeing the reaction of fans, is dampened.
I would honestly be incredibly disappointed if the contents of a Direct were leaked, for example. Would I still read tf out of it because i don't have that self control? yes, but the regret would be there.

ThreadNintendo Direct Speculation |OT5| Hello darkness my old friend...
It's more character driven than 999, and a bit sillier. At this point in my life, AI affected me more? I guess because love and relationships between different characters was such a central theme.
Also there aren't really the same puzzles the way 999 had. So basically if you like strong character writing and an intriguing but more grounded than usual Uchikoshi plot, then you'll find AI just as good, yeah.

I mean, I won't pretend to know how Nintendo runs things, but a lot of companies actually do. Plus, when you have offices different places in the world, you don't necessarily schedule posts like that around the holiday of one of them.
Not saying that it be a factor, just saying that it doesn't erase the possibility of an announcement (if a Direct is indeed coming Wednesday)
ThreadNintendo Direct Speculation |OT5| But why? OT4 was still selling...

Also idk why but my headcanon is that he is basically a big dumb himbo who tries to have a happy life married to Malon but is tormented by personal demons for the rest of his life.
BUT IF WE'RE NOT GOING BY THIRST then BotW Link. He's so SASSY and RUDE, he's like a little chaos goblin and I LOVE him.
He's also the first Link where we actually hear his own thoughts - the JP version had the adventure log in 1st person, and even in the English version there are still some 1st person perspective text for examining things.
Also! According to the Creating a Champion book, he's the only truly adult Link, as they say he's "between 18 - 20 years old"
I hope they develop on his personality for the sequel.
I'd love to see the series use a form of the literary device - for example, a Link and Ganondorf role-reversal where Link is the Actual Bad Guy without realizing it and it's Ganondorf who's on the right side of history.

I'm confused, why are we all now certain that BOTW2 wont make it till 2021?

I'm not saying it doesn't make sense, I'm saying that I feel like the Nintendo we're used to would have put it in a Direct. But I agree with 's write-up - I see it as proof that they have some beefy things for the near future, and as such can afford to be more discerning with what gets into a Direct.

ThreadThe Lack of Third-Person options in recent and upcoming Action-Adventure/Open World/RPGs
I'm one of those people that can't play 1st person games - or even watch people play them.
Without fail I get really nauseous/motion sick, and it's just not a pleasant experience. I also generally would rather experience a world/story through a defined character who I can see react to their environment, as somehow I've always felt less impacted by stories with a blank slate avatar. There's nothing to connect to for me.
But yes, sadly 1st person games provide an accessibility barrier that makes them completely off-limits for me, so games like Cyberpunk hold 0 interest for me, even if I loved TW3.

Also I know 99% of Zelda fans are dead-set against Link talking but if there will be any sort of co-op at all, or a better story he to.
So my bets for the sequel are:
1) New overworld
2) Voiced Link
3) Playable Zelda (at least in specific sections)
and I really, really hope they throw us a bone before E3. a <6 month marketing calendar sounds insane to me.
ThreadNintendo Direct Speculation |OT3| Nintendo Direct Speculation Trilogy HD
RE: BotW2 - I don't see them going full underground, that'd be lame.
I also think they will indeed have a drastic tonal shift between the first one and the sequel.
I'm wondering though if when they said "return to that world" they don't mean literally recycling the map/overworld, and more returning to it in a spiritual sense? i.e. same characters, same era, same overall context and backstory, but in a different or expanded setting. In the end we saw the castle raising - perhaps we will be seeing another kingdom completely alien to us?
Either way I have no doubt they'll surprise us in more ways than one. The current Zelda team - and arguably the current Nintendo - seem a lot more willing to take creative risks in favor of surprising fans and disrupting the industry.
ThreadNintendo Direct Speculation |OT3| Nintendo Direct Speculation Trilogy HD

I can totally see that happening! Not even counting an AC centric one.
I'm curious when they'll do a full reveal of BoTW2...if I were doing the marketing plan for it (assuming the holiday 2020 release date) I'd do a trailer revealing the name and release tease pre-E3, then a gameplay treehouse demo for E3, and then another big comm push closer to launch with smaller breadcrumbs in between (dev interviews, screenshots, art, etc).
But also based on how they've marketed AC I can't guess their strategy. it feels like they've barely talked about it?

ThreadThe Legend of Playable Zelda: Setting Ourselves Up for Disappointment... Together! (Speculation, Discussion, and Wishful Thinking) [Media Heavy!]
You know - I feel like if (when?) Zelda is finally playable, it'd be kind of...cheap? to simply have her be another "fighter" the way Link is. I don't think it makes sense for what we know of her character, and I feel like all too often making a female character physically strong/adept at combat is a stand-in for giving her actual agency in the story.
I'd much rather Zelda's moveset to be more suited to who she has been established to be, which is someone who is curious, intelligent, and very sneaky if she can get around so easily without people noticing. Imagine her being some sort of engineer, where she could use technology to her advantage, or have a toolset that allows her to solve puzzles Link can't (or can only brute-strength his way through). I'm honestly not super interested in playing as "Link but it's actually Zelda", which is what would happen if she's given a sword and a shield and we call it a day. Highlight the differences in their competencies, and why they work so well together (or against each other, if it comes to that!)
ThreadThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel Development Thread- News, Updates, and Speculation
I agree x10000000000000000
Yes, Zelda definitely needs more VA (and better quality VA/scene direction for English, as has been previously stated), but if that's the case then Link can not stay silent. For presentation alone it was awkward enough having him silently react (and barely) to events and characters in the cutscenes, but they were able to somewhat mitigate this by having the flashbacks "cut out" as soon as he'd have to say something.
For co-op, ideally Link and Zelda would be able to react to each other throughout the gameplay through voice lines that don't interrupt gameplay.
I will never understand the take that Link should never talk if we're trusting Nintendo to do something qualitative. I fully have faith that they took our feedback from their first go at it and will up the presentation quality for this sequel.
Silent protags in voiced games hurt immersion rather than help it.
Link should be voiced and is a character rather than a player avatar (and has been for a while).
Look y'all generic & cringy or not I will ride this one person army into the abyss.

I'm just thirsty for this game. I'll be SO disappointed at this point if we don't get some sort of Game Awards reveal for it, hahaha.
ThreadThe Game Awards 2019 - All Nominees Revealed
I will continue shilling for this game forever but it's a shame AI: The Somnium Files wasn't nominated. It deserves something, but the marketing has been so dang quiet on it!
Honestly I've felt this way for a while, but with Breath of the Wild it's especially apparent - Mute Link is a relic of the past that has long outstayed its welcome.
It always baffles me how people will get annoyed at silent protags in voiced games like Astral Chain, but as soon as we talk about Zelda, it's "no VA/Link stays mute!"
I don't need to self-project onto a blank slate (which I would argue that Link hasn't been since at least Wind Waker). I'm a woman of color - I'm never going to "see" myself as Link. I'd much rather follow the story of a fully-realized character and empathize with his struggles and growth.
So thank you OP, I'm in your corner.
yeah, the costs are massive. From what I understand, rather than every publisher housing their own server, it'd be a few giants taking care of that (i.e. Google, Amazon, etc).
I'd say right now we're still in the earlyish stages of R&D, so it'll be interesting to see where we're at after this next gen ends. I guess it depends on if Stadia seems...clearer to us.
It's kind of common knowledge in the industry right now - having a lot of the power generated by a machine that is doomed to obsoletion is phasing out. Where we're moving towards is having low upfront costs to the consumer where you can use devices that you already have around (smartphone, PC, etc) to "stream" content using resources other than your device.
There's still lots of challenges that we're facing getting there, though - one of which is cost. Someone (not the consumer) has to foot the bill, so the startup costs to the provider are HUGE.
It'll be interesting to see what happens after this next (potentially last) generation of physical consoles.

I want them to give Link full characterization this time - there's no way they can get away with having him continue to be unvoiced in this one.
I would KILL for some moral ambiguity thrown in there - the spirit hand thing wedged into the vampire mummy's chest didn't look particularly "nice". Maybe (probably) it's wishful thinking, but the fact that the current president of Nintendo just gave an interview where he talks about wanting to makes me think that we might have something really...surprising in store for us.
There's no denying that the reveal trailer employed some horror-like vibes, and it seems like Link and Zelda's relationship - or at least dynamic - could be at the forefront of the journey. Perhaps they're going to go for a slightly more "mature" experience this time around? I'm not saying M-rated territory, but a more character-focused story with actual depth.
Either way, I fully expect Link to have voiced dialogue this time around.
