You're mistinterpreting my point. We've all encountered the bad effects of the death by a thousand cuts the NHS has been suffering since it's beginning; from Aneurin Bevan's resignation in protest at charges to patients for dentistry and spectacles being introduced in 1951 to fund participation in the Korean War, to Neoliberalism beginning the acceleration of decline of the social state in the 80s.. You don't need to explain how neoliberal austerity works to me, it's the main fuel for sleepless nights for me, but the BBC has been set-up to defend a system that directly hurts our social state.

The BBC have treated me like subhuman scum for years and have always been a tainted organisation—Forget the last decade, manufacturing consent for the Iraq War happened under Labour.. and that's before we even get to the decades of protection of paedophiles.
The NHS has saved my life and, as things stand, still would at no cost.
People need to stop acting like this is an equivalency for everyone. I know which one I want to fight for, I don't have blinders on.

That’s somewhat true although any gains are sandwiched by apathy and the fringe right-wing protest vote in RefUK but as far as bearing out in actual voting Labour aren’t benefiting from an unprecedented precarious government. Labour have only gained voteshare in 1 of the 5 by-elections to occur in England since 2019 (in a seat they still lost by 20%), the Council elections in May were a blowout whereas the LIb Dems made a slight gain and Greens doubled their councillors. The Lib Dems have now captured 2 'Blu Wall' seats in 6 months.
Labour aren't thriving, political apathy is.
I'm tired, Robbie..
What's hilarious/pathetic about Gale saying this is he was found to have breached the code of conduct by trying to influence a judge in the trial of Charlie Elphicke... he is yet another walking Tory scandal himself.
Maybe Johnson will benefit from the mere fact that there isn't a candidate for his replacement that isn't dripping in corruption themselves.
Moving Right and picking up scraps (this doesn't just apply to this by-election) while the Party coffers empty and the most mobile section of your canvassing support, the young vote, abandons you in droves (Greens were the only other party present in 2019 to increase their vote interestingly) is so far not proving to be a winning strategy.
Supporters of Labour's current strategy will bleat on about tactical voting here but there was no agreement, Labour did nothing to signal to voters that they should vote to keep the Tories out. Labour were trying to win: of the candidate and I'm sure in December temperatures.
Here's the Progressive Alliance™ rearing it's head again although the stats in Labour's ad are at least accurate to the previous result If there's any better a temperature reading of your own base than losing a seat you've held for 200 years with a losing margin I don't know what is. At the very least, our odds of seeing Johnson resigning publicly disgraced are getting better and better.
Labour had nearly a quarter of the vote in 2019, nearly a third in 2017, in this constituency. So this place that had a higher vote total for Labour in both GEs under Corbyn than the prior 2 under Miliband and Brown should now be deemed unattainable by Labour in 2021?Being Remain was a pretty big signifier of being, at the very least nominally, Left-leaning until Brexit was confirmed a year ago.
but it sounds like we're agreed on this being a hard conservative constituency where those voters are ultimately the kingmakers, and it's a much easier decision to make a protest vote when you know there's less than 2 and a half years at most until the next GE. Not to mention this could tip the scales in favour of removing Johnson now to heal the Party's image long-term.
Labour were still campaigning for Ben Wood locally on polling day. This sort of constituency isn't won by tactical voting, this is a depressed vote across the board with a very conservative constituency moving to the LibDems.
This is a by-election triggered by a scandal of institutional corruption timed with the breaking of a further senior party-wide scandal—fairly unprecedented circumstances preceding an unprecedented result.
Morgan said that because it's very beneficial to the LibDems to get 'tactical voting' and a 'Progressive Alliance' thriving in the conscious, we've already started seeing it being pushed, a line of thinking that will only benefit the LibDems.it's important to ask why in 2 years the party most Pro-Remain can go from 10% of the vote in an area that voted 60% Leave to having a 5,925 vote majority, and . Why were positioned to capitalise on conservative apathy and outrage?
This isn't a new switch either, though the Tories mostly held strong in the Council elections, the incumbent leader of the council, Peter Nutting, lost his seat to a Liberal Democrat.
ThreadJeremy Corbyn will vote against mandating vaccines for NHS staff & vaccine passports
I've seen the 70,000 number thrown around which is worrying, depending on how many are in patient-facing roles, of course. The truth is we don't know how much of the national total will reconsider their stance during a period of extreme vulnerability. I'm strongly of the view that if we say the people who work with the virus every day don't have to be vaccinated, ; and NHS workers choose where they work, the public doesn't choose how they get healthcare. However, and annecdotally also, my girlfriend works in care where the vaccine is already mandated and () . The position of all the Royal Colleges, all the unions representing NHS staff and studies suggest it doesn't actually increase compliance and I don't know if we're in a position where we can lose even 1, 2, 3 whatever% nationally; a dangerous assumption is that staff who may be lost will be easily replaced.
Corbyn's stance is exactly what Keir Starmer's stance was on the 25th of October
As you said, risk-balancing and I don't trust this government to balance risk; losing staff to vaccinate the majority who comply is great if we have the structure in place to cover the losses—as always, the timing of absolutely everything is bottom of the barrel awful and we're going to have another terrible winter.
That Labour blowout is pathetic. -21.6 turnout compared to the -36.3 of the Dec 2nd by-election and it's too late for me to be lookinh at maths on the voteshare lost for Labour compared to 2019 but..
Labour had 12,495 votes (22.1%) there 2 years ago, Lib Dems had 5,643 (10%), Labour are sitting at 9.7% now.
Does anyone want to claim that these people backing the LibDems are chasing the and not just conservative voters slapping the Tories hands knowing they can vote them back in in 2024?
Many people, Tory and otherwise, are heading towards apathy but if not, people leaving Labour are heading Green or LD and Tories are going LD (or a fringe right-wing place)
it is truly hilarious that Starmer has prostrated himself to Capital and the politico-media complex and he still can't get even for a seat that Labour had a comfortable 2nd place lead (+120%) on the Lib Dems in in 2019 despite a downswing in Lab vote and an upswing in LD vote there at the time.
The current cynical push of the 'Progressive Alliance™' myth has also seen any high-profile Labour member giving their support to Ben Wood receiving a hail of abuse in the replies for not backing the LDs [despite the clear fact that publicly backing another party is grounds for expulsion].
Still it is absolutely hilarious that a 200 year held Conservative seat is falling to the LibDems. A deeply unserious party and Ed Davey is a comedic figure I want to see more of.. Get the Yellow Hammer out.

Look, I'm open to a data-led example leading the way as far as healthcare workers go (I find it inexplicable that we're in a situation where people who are administering healthcare to the sick and immunocompromised don't trust vaccines but here we are) but we're heading into another rough winter here with the full scale of what Omicron can do not yet known and I don't think it's a risk worth taking . If we were going to mandate the vaccine for healthcare workers it should have been 6 months ago. The words Door, Horse and Bolted come to mind here as always with this government. The government has not offered a solution (because it doesn't have one) if even a small amount of the unvaccinated work force are lost.
As far passports go, opposing it is fairly boilerplate stuff in a country that uses legislation like this to exclude the poor and non-white.
I hate to say it but I'm happy to have TJ back, his fights always deliver.

Pre-tournament, I think a lot of people kinda accepted 3 at the back as being acceptable against inferior opposition because they'd just let the narrative seep into their critical thinking; and in the end Southgate himself accepted that playing more than 2 CBs against our Group opponents would just have been a waste and invited unnecessary pressure
Now, I think people just struggle to accept our defence is just pretty good and our formation is setup to keep chances created against as low as possible; the best chance Germany and Ukraine had literally came from one of our players playing an opposition player in (Sterling and Walker, respectively).
I'm a West Ham fan and there was a run this season where we kept something ridiculous like 6 cleansheets in a row and we were all just waiting for it blow up in our faces because being sloppy is what we've come to expect over years of it, and the same goes for England. The reason why we're so reticent to back ourselves is because we've been beaten down by decades of abject mediocrity.

Dutch here and all over the place, the people I saw talking up the Dutch team were mostly ignoring who their coach was. The pleas to stop playing 3 CBs were well-publicised.
English are much more pessimistic because the Dutch have experienced success more recently and because of the failure of our 'Golden Generation'; when I was a kid, literally every house had multiple flags out during tournaments, these days it's much more a cautious optimism but people were beaten down by the oppressive failure between Euro 96 and World Cup 2018.

Congratulations!
The only thing funnier than people assuming Germany would trash England is people then saying
Coronaball doesn't care about your pre-existing biases or narratives.
The financial gap between the richest of the rich clubs and everyone else is so wide now that other clubs have had to innovate in pragmatic ways at rising to the challenges of facing. The likes of Simeone and Bordalás have shown in Spain how you play against Barca and Real; you don't show up and accept that you're going to get thrashed 5-0. While top clubs can afford to dick around and chuck in ex-players into their first job managing multi-100m squads, other teams are forced to consider their hiring processes and transfer market shrewdness to exceed their expectations e.g.: Brendan Rodgers' Leicester City team of the last couple of years; and this extends to international football and how nations with relatively small player pools can do well in tournaments.
Tactical nous, discipline and work rate can beat any team that should win 'on paper'.
Saying England got shit teams on their side of the draw is just disrespectful to the quality of the other teams. Denmark showed how good they are despite a tragedy, Czech Republic have a fantastic balanced system and already gave England a decent game, Ukraine did take some blows tonight and put more minutes in their legs but they have some truly class players and Shevchenko has been managing the team for FIVE years already.
Andrea Pirlo and Andrés Iniesta aren't lining up for Italy and Spain on Friday. There's absolutely no reason why Switzerland and Belgium can't beat them.
Czech Republic didn't go out playing van Basten and Bergkamp and Rijkaard; Šilhavý knew he was going taking on Fraud de Boer mismanaging the project that Ronald Koeman abandoned. losing 1-0 to England in the group means nothing if England were to cross the Czech's again. (Let me tell you as a West Ham fan, The Czechmates are dangerous and well-organised. ) Gareth Southgate in kind knew if he could match Germany's formation, England had every chance of beating Germany man-to-man because of Germany's flawed defence and blunt attack, a better manager than Löw adapts to the situation at the very least during the game.
if you didn't learn from the Round of 16 that your pre-conceived notions aren't worth anything [and that includes things that happened in this very tournament's group stage], you didn't watch the games closely enough.
Anyway, congratulations to my German friends, Löw is gone and Flick will win the World Cup.

Watching the Round of 16 madness supporting a team that hasn't played yet
People think going out to Germany, on pens or something, would be the most English thing
No, scraping past Germany and then dashing the false hope by losing 2-0 to Sweden would be the most English thing
On a more serious note, Portugal and France just showed why you simply cannot afford to just let an entire half go to waste.
Southgate cannot allow the first 45 minutes to simply be a 'feeling out' period and feel like going in at half-time with very little created is a good thing. When you see something not working, you have 5 subs, don't be afraid to amend it early.
Thread2020 UEFA European Championship |OT| Get well soon, Christian Eriksen
Belgium also lost their most important player 3 minutes into the second half so we can't really blame them for spending the second half protecting the lead. Belgium didn't create chances but the goal changes the context of the task in front of Belgium especially after KdB's injury, why chase 2-0 when you've lost your talismanic playmaker and conceding means you'll struggle to score another? Roberto Martinez made only two subs before stoppage time, and both due to injuries, he clearly doesn't trust the players beyond the first XI to hold the lead.
Portugal spent 48 minutes plus added time trailing in this game, and aside from Ruben Dias' header I don't feel like Portugal really created anything completely 'unmissable', this is a tactical failing on the part of Santos.
Yes, he can be credited with the second half control but in a knockout game you cannot be content to sacrifice 45 minutes of play and surprised when you don't get the 'deserved' outcome.
Santos squeezed so much out of an inferior pool in 2016 and now he doesn't seem to be sure what to do with a much more expansive set of options. He changed up the midfield so much in this tournament and never seemed able to settle on what was best.
I feel like that shot from 30 yards in the dying minutes from Bruno Fernandes really exemplified the lack of a link between midfield and attack. Portugal took 14 shots from outside the box and that does not signify a team that knows what to do once it reaches the final third of the pitch and that can undo so many teams.

Southgate definitely isn't alone in this but I feel like he over-estimated Croatia.
They had flashes of control, like late first half, early second half and Modrić can still play a good ball obviously but he just isn't the dynamic player he was against us 3 years ago and no one else was picking up the slack; they also haven't got a good Mandžukić replacement yet.
Late on when players like Modrić were proper bollocksed and they had a few on yellows (), I think that's when you seal the victory bringing on foul-magnet Grealish, Saka maybe... The fact is, this is tournament football, fatigued legs killed us in 2018 and we only used 3 out of 5 substitutes today in the sweltering heat. What harm would bringing Grealish and Bellingham on at 75-80 do? I dunno...
I always felt like Czech Republic were the test in this group but it's fantastic to get a calm, composed win in a tournament group game. First ever opening game win at the Euros for England. Feels very non-English.I think we stupidly arrogant and over-confident after Euro 96 all the way until we failed to qualify for Euro 2008, the so-called 'Golden Generation' were perhaps the most talented crop England has ever produced but the squad was always so dysfunctional and ill-prepared that we consistently under-performed. We deserved the label of being overconfident idiots that constantly overperform.
I mean, look at England's performances at tournaments from missing Euro 08 to getting knocked out by Iceland in 2016. That period absolutely all previous optimism out of English fans, particularly younger ones that had never seen Italia '90 and have no or little memory of Euro '96.
2018 was such a breath of fresh air because, even though to outsiders it appeared we were just winning games we should, we so frequently in the previous 20 years screwed them up.
Honestly, if we scrape every group game this tournament 1-0, with this football, but balance the minutes everyone's getting so the squad is optimally fresh for the knockout rounds, I'll be happy.

Hopefully the last squad we'll see Trippier and Walker; I was fine seeing them play today as there's clearly an issue with the fitness of Shaw, Chilwell and James but they need to be cycled out of the England set-up.
Also, think it's madness that Aaron Cresswell's name never gets mentioned for a call-up, just had his best season for us, can play well in a back 3 and his setpieces are immense.
So Nate's job now is to take fights he hasn't earned for good money and then showboat to get crowds going before getting mauled?

Nice to see Italy back in a tournament with a balanced, quality squad; the aging centreback partnership could be an issue though.
Likewise, Turkey have brought through a decent generation of talent and look raring to aim for the stars like they did between '96 and 2008.
It was especially rich coming from Frampton, easy to criticise when you've only been hit by Featherweights.
I think this L could ultimately be good for Dubois, the hype train was getting a little ahead of itself here. He's got a lot of stuff to work on.
It honestly reminded me of Holloway/Volkanovski I in terms of elite gameplan against elite striker, except Max accumulated damage on his leg from Volk's kicks at a much slower rate.
Conor has slowly transistioned to an even more pure 'boxing-only' style from his Featherweight days and I'm not shocked once his leg went dead his striking, and more importantly, counter-striking base was nulled he couldn't get away from Dustin's punches-in-bunches style.
Conor even said in interview that he ' he was checking the kicks' which is such a red flag for someone so lead leg heavy. I don't care about any speculation about Conor's so-called decline, I think every version of Conor is vulnerable to version of Dustin even if he doesn't necessarily lose. I have no doubt now that had this fight gone on through further rounds it just would have been worse for Conor.
Conor needs to sort out the issues with his camp as soon as possible or further defeats await down the road.

That was legitimately embarrassing from Costa
Either turn up with a real gameplan to fight Adesanya or swing for the fences, don't stand still while one of the best fighters in the world systematically dismantles you in under 2 rounds.

Dude came in with the same plan he's had to fight everybody else; mocking Romero ended up being a hilarious self-own.
I maintain Whittaker's gameplan wasn't without merit despite being caught twice, if Adesanya is gonna lose it's gonna be getting caught in a clinch exit flurry. A big reason the Romero fight was such a poor spectacle was because Adesanya realised that's what Yoel wanted and he doesn't have the explosiveness anymore to engineer his own chances. That's where I assumed Costa would differ against Adesanya due to the fact that he didn't fear getting in tight with a counter-striker like Romero even after being dropped. Costa knows as well as anyone that he doesn't have the tank for 5, especially not against a rangey point-scorer, so it was weird not seeing him pushing, throwing more of his own kicks or, as he loved to remind Adesanya, attempt a takedown to test his jiu jitzzz. I dunno, maybe he thought he couldn't be finished if he wasn't tired early on. He needs to mix up his coaching and work on that gas tank.
Shit like this would be nipped in the bud early if Dana was gone.
I have a lot of nostalgia for the old Wild West of MMA but a lot of it is carny and embarassing and that thread still exists today, Colby being an example. ...and then he took that god damned Tony fight
The 3 straight KOs is probably the difference between retiring at 40 and retiring at 45. He took a serious beating in a 7 month period fighting Ferguson, Gaethje and McGregor.
I have no doubt that the Cowboy that was going into the Tony fight on a 3-fight winstreak would finish a guy like Niko Price in a fairly straightforward manner.
Tyron had two judges give him 50-44 on his last two fights.
and Colby doesn't really finish dudes, it's going to be 5 painful rounds to watch if you hate Colby/love Woodley.
I'm not gonna defend Stipe's eyepoke, two wrongs don't make a right, but DC's left eye was already pretty fucked up before the poke happened.
The rules don't bend for karma but DC has eyepoked fight in this trilogy. I mean, a timeout was called in Round 1 of this fight for an eyepoke by DC.
Absolutely the correct winner of this fight and I'm happy to see Stipe walk away from the trilogy with the ultimate strategic and moral victory.
I hated watching two of my faves, Whittaker and Till, fight each other but in the end, I'm glad Whittaker won. Till just isn't well rounded enough to be a Champion at the moment, whereas I feel Rob is another fight away (Cannonier?) from a title shot.
Woodley looked like a very strong Champ then loses all 5 rounds to Usman and all 5 rounds to a No. 6 ranked fighter, man's over the hill

it's amazing that that Iannucci quote about The Thick Of It being made redundant by reality was said like 18 months before Johnson was even PM... We've really hit the accelerator towards dystopia in the last year.

First post-easing clap on my road and it was noticeably shorter and with fewer people
I guess nurses don't need motivation now you can pop out more times a day
As someone who hasn't been furloughed and works bank holidays, the last couple of months have come with some very mixed feelings.
I'm just thankful I'm part of the shrinking population that has gainful employment... but I see my Steam friendlist with an abundance of activity in recent weeks.
and the issue with the easing is, with a lot of people not at work when they socialise they can freely drink so safety goes even further out the window. A friend of mine told me they had to leave a street party yesterday because once people got a couple of drinks deep social distancing just slipped away completely.
I don't see how Bank holiday weekend + VE Day + Rumours of loosened restrictions/restrictions actually being loosened don't end up spiking us again pretty significantly 2-3 weeks down the line.
Imagine if police weren't so invested in protecting their masters and called out the people responsible for cutting their workforce over the last decade
The first gold star Starmer gets is bringing up the death toll compared to the rest of Europe but Johnson has never been good at PMQs, he always looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him when he was faced with Corbyn.
I see the replies to Piers Morgan on twitter these days. I know what you're saying.
Today was fine, a pleasant surprise in his improvement, but when the media is failing to adequately call out failings, for me, the opposition has to be picking up the slack. Twitter is an echo chamber where people can avoid things they don't want to see, it needs to be coming from a mainstream source and the media is not invested in holding the Tories to account.
There's nothing wrong with asking for a plan. Making it your entire platform for 'challenging' the government is a big mistake.
The opposition so far has been weak in a period when the Tories have never been more vulnerable. I'm cool giving Starmer a settling in period but if this is the taster for what sort of fightback we're getting in the coming years, we are in trouble.
I feel like I'm living in an alternate universe.
I mean, it's hilarious that we got weeks of "Italy is a shitshow", "Spain is a shitshow", endless news pieces with sombre music in Italian hospitals...
Fastforward, we've got worse numbers but everything's just fine in our hospitals? the only person allowed in to film is fucking Grant from EastEnders!
and yet the Tories are tone-policing a woman for rightfully challenging them on their bullshit testing numbers. It's maddening.
So when this easing inevitably ends in another spike and many more deaths, the new opposition can't complain because it's all the man has been talking about for weeks. Great job.
I've started going out for exercise much earlier in the day to avoid the frankly packed promenade that can be seen later on.
Every day is a bank holiday to a lot of these people.
People here have been flouting it since the weather turned last week, it was actually noticeably quieter when the weather was milder on Monday and Tuesday.
As far as desensitisation goes, it's sort of irrelevant... it's kinda why comments about Boris' illness maybe changing him/giving him new perspective were so odd.. it's like bruh, ... a decade of NHS cuts means they can't handle the sick, a decade of police cuts mean this is a faux-lockdown that people would inevitably exploit. Even if Boris and his government did decide they wanted to make handling this well their defining achievement, it would've been too difficult for people as incompetent as them due to their party's legacy of austerity.
This is a national embarrasment so far beyond anything I've ever seen. These people are uncharged criminals and it's written on the face of every minion put on a podium every day to chat bollocks about Keep Calm & Clap On.
I fucking hope so; praying to every God. They can deflect their Windrushes and Grenfells until the end of time but if there's any justice in the world, this must end them.
People out sunning themselves spiked massively here while the PM was in intensive care, which would be especially hilarious for a Tory backwater if it wasn't so fucking sad.
Out to the park in the day, clapping & fireworks in the evening - Offset mortgage your pandemic today!
This was going to be a test of healthcare systems before anything else. When I saw a report a month ago about Italy having higher ICU capacity than us I knew grim, days were ahead of us.
This is going to be a national embarrassment that makes Brexit look like a day in the park.
Personally, I've seen one cop car in the last 3 weeks [I leave my house multiple times a day for work, shopping and exercise] and uhhhh, while this isn't a prime holiday destination, a lot of people do come here in the summer... It's bad.
I must've missed the memo about the lockdown being lifted because this place had it's busiest day since lockdown began
I dread to think how bad it's going to get over the bank holiday weekend with the lovely weather coming

I'm certain as soon as they knew we had United/Liverpool in the Cup they were deadset on not investing in January, they didn't think it would be worth pushing the boat out to continue the Cup run as long as we didn't get an easy draw.
Moyes' main weakness is poor use of substitutes and he always seems to come into games against Top 6 sides with an inferiority complex; we looked like we were playing for pens from the first minute. We actually only looked better after we were forced to make changes through injuries.
Rather than playing Souček and Yarmolenko out of position, I would have put Yarmo on the right and started Odubeko through the middle. I definitely would have looked at giving Johnson and Fredericks starts; maybe even gone back to a Back 3 with Balbuena, Diop and Alves. Also, pretty sure we'll never see Conor Coventry play.
We've put so many minutes in Souček, Rice, Cresswell and Coufal this year and I really hope Ogbonna's injury isn't serious, he's my Hammer of the Year so far.

I'm not sure what point you're making here, being team leader in those stats in a doesn't mean anything. United's winrate pretty much doubled after Fernandes signed.
Even now, none of these players have been important to United as key players at Liverpool have been over the last 3 years. You could make an argument that Liverpool have been pretty damn lucky to never lose one key component in their common XI prior to this season.
Ole rotates players and systems way, more than Klopp has ever done. It's different squads, different management.

because none of those players have ever hit a level of consistency that made them like key players in the Liverpool squad.

I wish nothing but luck to Haller and I expect him to thrive at Ajax.
We massively overpaid in a seller's market and tried to jam a square peg into a round hole for 18 months. The board have learned a £25m lesson about their infamously poor transfer 'strategy'; clubs so easily take us for a ride.
If we haven't got a well-scouted option already in mind, we need to spend the next 5 months intensively looking for Antonio's successor. In the interim loan someone, give a youth player a chance, play Souček there.. play fucking Diop there.. Anything.. Just don't let this happen again.
However, losing Haller and Snograss means our squad is now down to 18 outfield players, we can barely fill the bench with everyone healthy, let alone with injuries or, heaven forbid, a COVID outbreak. A pretty precarious position for a club to be in right now. Get some loans, promote some youth.

Hertha Berlin wanted to pay €25m for Xhaka and Arteta wanted him to stay, the clues were there early on. You don't keep a player that tells the fans to 'fuck off' no matter how short your squad is or how talented the player is. This lad gets to stick around but a player like Guendouzi who clearly gave a lot of effort on the pitch, and was the target of much praise from the fans and media last season, needs to go out on-loan because he can't be handled off the pitch?
Granit Xhaka is the worst player I've ever seen steal a living at a so-called 'Top 6' club for many years, he hides on the pitch and is only capable of side and backpasses, no inclination to play a pass through the defence or take a shot himself.
This typifies a late stage Arsene Wenger signing and the unwillingness or inability for his successors to turf these sorts of players out, root and stem, will see every one of them be a long term failure.
Arteta showed the he is tactically astute with smart wins over United, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpoolx2 but the glaring hole is clearly his inability to manage a squad, especially one that is content to be mediocre over many years.

Leeds were surprisingly poor tonight
Bielsa made that double sub at HT and thought he’d figured us out but apart from that awful header from Rodrigo late on, they did absolutely nothing up our end in the second half.
Haller has upped his work rate but his first touch is lacking and he's not getting that luck in the penalty box and Meslier was immense again.

Another tight win against poor opposition but this game, and the previous against Fulham, are the type of fixture we'd drop points in a year ago. Only Spurs have broken 1.0 xG against us (without a pen) since the second game of the season (Arsenal away); in that time, we've played some top teams like Liverpool, City, Leicester and Wolves.
Currently, sat fourth in the form table since GW2 - conceding 6 goals in 7 and averaging 2 goals a game. We haven't been this defensively solid since the 'good' days under Big Sam but we also have some exciting attackers leading the line.

Second game, playing with a noob sniper who kept dying but we were effortlessly carrying him towards the final boss. He disconnects in a previous room and when we get to Aghanim we can't move him to the pressure pad to start the final encounter. We cannot figure out what to do and my two friends leave.. then, I notice Sniper has 1 min left to reconnect and I think 'what if you just have to wait out the DC timer?'
He gets the disconnect about 30 seconds later and I start the final boss but my friends have completely disconnected and an easy win goes down the drain

Hearing Capitalist take 'Llama was hated by the community' purely at face value and not as an indictment on Dota's fans and the scene has to be a massive teachable moment for him.
Stuff like that is also why I had a hard time feeling bad for Slacks in his video; a lot of his takes just expose his naïvety. His "we're gamers, we're bad at this stuff" attitude had me rolling my eyes and 'Both sides are bad' on social issues is a tepid fucking take. No dude, you're just scared that speaking out on important issues will have reddit calling you an SJW cuck because your whole gimmick is 'redditor that gets to go to TI and fuck around'. No need to challenge the status quo when it serves you very well, I guess
I much preferred Purge's comments where he was like "I never saw anything happen but it doesn't shock me because the scene was extremely toxic". Anyone that doesn't think Dota has huge problems with inclusivity and toxicity is naïve or willfully ignorant because it doesn't harm them. Gotta be honest, as a whole, I've always been indifferent towards the Dota2 pro scene's casters, analysts and personalities with very few exceptions, and seeing how things like this aren't just perpetrated by indivdials but very clearly enabled by groups just makes me feel incredibly disillusioned. If a relatively mediocre caster can get away with that behaviour for years, what other skeletons does the scene have in the closet? The way the Grant story is told makes it seem like he’s pulled that manoeuvre more than once.
Even if many of the individuals have clean hands on actual crimes, the scene has always seemed insular and gatekeepy. For a game of its size, Dota has always had major problems with inclusivity in the scene; if you weren't deemed worthy by the "old guard" you struggled to get anywhere.
This post really sums up the scene and the hardcore playerbase for me, which in of itself is a microcosm of any industry that is insular and male-dominated. Also, gotta love how people take Grant's admission of alcoholism at face value [like it's an excuse] but every accusation of abuse gets a metric fuckton of doubt dropped on it.
Fuck it all.

I said this right after the 8-2, Barça will have to fall further to never be in a title race. La Liga has a very shallow pool of teams that can possibly win the title.
I mean, they most likely would have won last season without the lockdown splitting the season end off; the Champions League Real Madrid came out because they were likely treating the home stretch like a knockout competition mentally.
Atleti were unlucky that their 'rebuild' came in a year when both Barça and Real weren't very good although for how much they spend and the wages Simeone is on, I would've expected more title challenges from them since 2014.
These legacy issues at Barça won't go away overnight but when you don't have many challengers you're always in with a shot of winning when you still have good quality, even without much coherence.

ThreadAl Bundy was supposed to be a loser because he worked minimum wage, yet he was able to afford a house and 2 children
If I recall correctly, Mark specifically mentions not having mortgage payments which says to me he could afford it or had help from his family, this is never clarified.
Regardless of that, my point was never that Peep Show was unrealistic, just that it works as a time capsule for early 2000s Blair Britain, and Mark's financial security - more or less the set-up for the entire show, as Jeremy's benefactor - wouldn't happen in 2020. People working in the lower rungs in a credit agency don't own property in London without a mortgage, a character with this sort of material wealth would lose all relatability to the sort of cult fandom Peep Show cultivated in it's early season.
ThreadAl Bundy was supposed to be a loser because he worked minimum wage, yet he was able to afford a house and 2 children
Even a more recent show like Peep Show has aged relatively poorly or rather, is a time capsule for pre-2008 Western opulence, because of Mark Corrigan's material wealth.
Despite being from an upper middle class family, they are nouveau broke because Mark was 'privately educated until dad's British Aerospace shares went kaput' and he has clearly had to live more frugally into adulthood but despite that, by his late twenties, from a loan manager position at a middling credit company. This is all but unthinkable for the British millennial in 2020 who is most likely trapped in some form of rent slavery. (Even Jeremy is clearly from an at least middle class background and was brought into the lower classes by trauma caused by his father abandoning him)
The changing financial situation of Britain is actually covered in the show in the series post-2008, with the long-standing employer of Mark, JLB credit going under, and Mark's continuing frugality, where we even see him abandon owning a mobile phone due to it's costs.
Also, one of my favourite scenes in the final series is when a younger character calls out Jeremy for his 'Gen-X slacker bullshit' - he lives his lifestyle out of laziness and attachment to the aesthetic of the struggling artist despite being constantly bailed out financially by Mark and his mother and having no perceptible musical talent.
ThreadAl Bundy was supposed to be a loser because he worked minimum wage, yet he was able to afford a house and 2 children
This is a good question and worth looking into; housing prices in London have absolutely skyrocketed over the past five+ years or so. When the show first came out, they would have been much lower.
A 2 bed in Croydon now is like £300,000+ (or £1,000 - 1,500 to rent) and surely far outside a loan manager's grasp to buy (Mark never mentions mortgage payments IIRC).
Mark brags about earning 'above the average annual salary' in Series 4 and in Series 6, Sophie's father tries to entice Mark into moving into Nanna's cottage with a £40k salary. We see Mark has the flat from before the show starts and is probably on around £25k-30k at that time in 2003, if I had to guess. [This may need more research]

Yes. All this conscription fearmongering/memeing I've seen this week has angered me to no end.
There. will. never. be. boots. on. the. ground.
Tehran, Iran has a larger population than NYC. Both weigh in at just below people. Imagine trying to take any action against a city of that size without committing multiple war crimes by accident.
There are 5 other cities in Iran with populations over 1 million.
There are 60 more cities with population between 100 thousand and 1 million.
For reference, Albany, NY doesn’t quite have 100 thousand residents. There are 139 OTHER cities in Iran in Albany’s bracket.
ThreadUS forces in Iraq under attack from Iranian cruise missiles. [IMPORTANT STAFF POST]
Like I said, Iran is practically uninvadable. Peppering population sites with ballistics is going to make everything Trump has done in his time so far that has hurt the US' global image look like childsplay. Allies are not going to flock to America's side here.
ThreadUS forces in Iraq under attack from Iranian cruise missiles. [IMPORTANT STAFF POST]
Exactly.
Invading Iran is invading an economy the size of Texas with nearly 3 times the population and more than twice as much area to cover with 10 times the logistical issues. This ignores that this would almost certainly lead to a cascading series of events that would incite massive conflict in the region. Nearly every probable scenario would result in the deaths of millions as a result of the conflict and its secondary impacts. You cannot sell this to America's allies when the resulting conflicts would send hundreds of thousands of refugees to Europe.

Well, I already felt that this time Moyes would get more leverage and I suspect that he may wrest a little more control away from Sullivan, and he couldn't have started his second stint with us any better. I don't have any particular issue with appointing Moyes as he has a vision and some semblance of an idea about how to build a stumbling club. Not to get too carried away but, frankly, who do people think would be better who would've come? The appointment of Moyes or Chris Hughton or Danny Cowley is all a bit moot. Nobody is going to be able to thrive under these circumstances.
People have viewed it as a regressive, uninspired choice without putting the pieces together that this is a regressive, uninspiring club. The team is listless and without direction because the club is too. There is no culture of success or excellence anywhere at West Ham and that is reflected in everything that happens at the club.
Moyes is fine because it doesn't matter who they appoint. It's all about drifting and listless nothingness. It's about hanging on until something better comes along in Summer 2021. We've got a rough run of fixtures over the next couple of months and those 3 points were desperately needed. I don't think singling out an individual and booing them is right, especially when the whole team is shite, but Xhaka has consistently performed below expectations since he signed for the club.
