Thread Why women criticise sexualised character designs | OT3 | "Her ass is part of her character."
Hey all, not singling anyone out but this is a reminder to be considerate when criticizing designs. For example it's one thing to criticize a design for having large breasts that are intended as titillation, it's another to say they are comical etc. The big point here is to be mindful and inclusive of your language, as some seemingly benign comments can be interpreted as shaming certain body types and features. Yes, we are criticizing literal objects in this thread but people can and do see themselves in these characters.

From what I have seen of RoF, the character models were a priority due to them being able to conserve budget on other aspects of the game. The overworld looks like a board game. Also probably different teams and such.

Thread Do you think RE3R holds up next to the recent Resident Evil titles?
I bought it at release and I got my money's worth thanks to the replay incentives. In terms of value and general quality, it's the weakest game so far. I consider it a growing pain of Capcom trying to capitalize on the series winning people back after multiple missteps. Hence the outsourcing.

Thread Resident Evil 3 |OT| Desperate Escape
I'm going to walk this back a bit and say I was too harsh initially in saying that Carlos's role undermines Jill as the hero. Jill is the game's hero and has the most badass moments, I'm not going to argue against that. I'll just say that the plot is unfortunately chained to something written in the 90's and it shows at times. I'm also looking at the game in the context of how dirty RE5 treated Jill. (Revelations, although earlier in the timeline helped offset that to a degree, but the damage has been done.)They could make Umbrella Chronicles into a full fledged game. I think everyone could be in that aside from Leon.

Thread Resident Evil 3 |OT| Desperate Escape
She is definitely the most competent and courageous of the two by a good margin, but the plot absolutely hinges on Jill being rendered utterly helpless and Carlos saving her. Also there's the whole ending sequence after the final boss. This being the best version of Jill helps offset that but the series' overall poor treatment of women is felt here more so than RE2.

Thread Resident Evil 3 |OT| Desperate Escape
I don't like the idea of possibly more Carlos content via DLC. Carlos's role already undermines Jill's as the protagonist and hero in the main game. What I would like to see for hypothetical DLC are nightmares/fever dreams that Jill has while incapacitated. They could incorporate unused areas and ideas from the original.

Finally 100%'d it and that final model is really underwhelming. Also the physics in the model viewer are either borked or someone on the team really wanted people to have the ability to admire Jill's boob physics. Even Carlos's pouches jiggling is ridiculous when you turn the model fast.

Happy to see True Colors in the top 10, though it's hard to gauge how much of a success this really is. "[H]ighest launch month dollar sales" is not a good metric for the series, as this is the first entry that is not episodic and launched at a much higher price. Previous games only had physical releases (AFAIK) once all episodes were out or about to be.

I think it's fine to criticize how Samus is portrayed in Dread, I sure don't care for it, but that Kotaku article is Personally I think the approach is too conservative and like much of the "story" is a poor reaction to Other M feedback. Adam speaking for much of the game while Samus is a silent action heroine really rubbed me the wrong way. I like her monologuing in Fusion and that would have been very welcome during the long load times between areas.

From what I've played of Dread, the writing for Adam is a weird reaction to Other M's feedback. I can't tell if they are trying to be deliberate or not with the callbacks. Adam still orders Samus around and speaks largely in imperatives. I'm a little annoyed that the feedback has resulted in Adam still having a voice while Samus is back to being a silent protagonist. Samus' internal monologuing in Fusion was a welcome addition. I have not finished the game, however.

Final form Gendo straight up looks like he belongs in Gurren Lagann, which isn't a good thing. A lot of the new character designs for 3.33 and 3.0+1.01 (that aren't designed by Anno's wife) are very Diebuster/Gurren Lagann. I can't believe I didn't look it up until now, but the Gurren Lagann character designer is the the chief animation director for 3.0+1.01 which explains some things. The implication is that Asuka protects the village because of him. It's hardly a stretch to imagine they spent time together after N3I and she is comfortable (not wearing much of anything) at his place. Also consider Asuka's fixation on Kaji in the original series and the fact that Kensuke matured past her. After Shinji frees her from Unit 13, we last see her entry plug outside of his place. Shinji knew what was up. I suspect Asuka and him had something going on, then he got older and transitioned into a parental type figure, and then at the end she's finally an adult. Do the math. >_> I'm also a cynic, but grooming situations sure can be romanticized in fiction. *cough* Bunny Drop *cough*

Yeah, one of my issues with Rebuild is Asuka, once again, getting sidelined as a character. The only character arc I like across the Rebuild series is Rei's. Edit: All the time spent on humanizing Gendo(h) could have been better spent on Asuka. Then again, the film showed that Anno and the rest of team weren't really all that interested in her outside of fanservice. Gah, I still can't believe they paired this Asuka off with Kensuke especially given the implications during the village section.

Finally watched Grand Slam. Pretty good though I don't know if I was just tired (I had blood drawn) but the show slumped for me in the period between Kenny vs. Bryan (which was fucking great) and Malakai vs. Cody. Best moment of the night was Cody taking the pin and the crowd booing him throughout the match. *chef's kiss* I just wish these audiences were better at booing heels that aren't MJF. I was caught off guard by Britt vs. Ruby being the main event, I'm happy for both of them and it was one of Britt's best matches minus the predictable end. JR peeved me real hard by calling Kenny vs. Bryan the "main event." I know it's a dream match and why almost everyone was there. It just rubs me the wrong way when the announcers don't hype up the women main eventing and being more hype for Kenny opening a show like the first Rampage. Gripes aside, Grand Slam felt like a PPV on TV with a great crowd.

I could put up with a lot of Switch games having underwhelming visuals if the frame rates were solid. *glares at Fire Emblem: Three Houses* The new Kirby game seemingly not being 60 FPS despite looking close to Super Mario Odyssey (which is a good looking game, don't get me wrong) is concerning. There are certainly outliers that I haven't gotten around to like Luigi's Mansion 3 that I've seen heaps of praise for. There's a lot of Switch games that I'm waiting to play until a Switch Pro/2 with enhanced BC comes out, notably Age of Calamity. This is all very fair criticism, the game is unfocused for better and worse. I think part of it is a result of Deck Nine's approach to writing. (He was the narrative director of BtS.) (May have spoilers for Before the Storm) where he talks about the composition of the writing team, including how most of them didn't have prior experience writing video games. Everyone from the Before the Storm's writing team moved on to True Colors alongside two new people. Deck Nine is still figuring themselves out and thus True Colors coming out wonky didn't surprise me. It does make me excited for their future projects as they continue to mature as a studio focused on narrative adventure games.

I don't think I've been so disappointed in a second season before. S1 isn't perfect and I have my issues with it but this has been a total disaster. The only saving grace is the animation/production talent at Orange. The breakneck pacing in these last few episodes confirmed my suspicion that the script was condensing or straight up cutting content from the source material. Some things just don't make sense or flow well. The issue may just be the source material, which I can definitely believe. Honestly, Rebuild does a poor job retelling Shinji's arc since it relies so heavily on the original series. That's setting aside standard storytelling issues in the movies themselves.

I feel like this is a very generous line of best fit on a scatter plot graph. That said, I don't disagree when you lay it out like this. It's the minute-to-minute storytelling (and some of the detours) the films take that hamper his arc, to me. I'll probably rewatch all of Rebuild when Thrice Upon a Time eventually releases on BD. I suspect I will like the films a lot less than I do now, since I watched them all with the TV series + EoE super fresh on my mind and propping them up. It doesn't help that there is a younger generation (and even many millennials) that watched something like Gurren Lagann before they ever watched Evangelion. In the original series and End of Eva, a number of male gaze shots are rooted in Shinji being a horny teenager. (Doesn't inherently make it good but at least there was .) With Rebuild they dropped all pretense and Anno clearly didn't care or told the animators to draw what they wanted (within reason).

For the love of cinema please let this be a fully new remaster and not just a touch up. Either way, I'm not saying no to seeing one of my favorite films in theaters for the first time. Also it's killing me that they used a shot from SAC that is literally just copying the original film. Edit: Sounds like it's just a touched up version of the existing 4K remaster.

Yeah, it is vague. If it's so expensive to license, then how did they pull off releasing the BD set in Japan without removing "Fly Me to the Moon"? Which is a much smaller market. I assume existing licensing contracts are in play for Japan or the cost exponentially increases when releasing internationally. Warner Bros. is on the production committee for JoJo so I assume that plays a big role in the licensed music being less of a hassle. (I don't watch JoJo.)

Oh what the hell was that? Aspects of this aren't bad but this very much is a failed experiment. The opening sequence is very hard to follow with its heavy use of 3DCG, so I'm dreading the action in the final film given impressions I've read. Gah, what a frustrating film. I don't even care if Thrice Upon a Time provides the key to decrypting its mysteries.

Was the trap wanting a nice follow-up to 2.22? I did like the piano duets, until they did that weird montage. (Likely to hide they didn't have the talent/budget to animate that much piano playing.) But yes, I look forward to shoddy 3DCG and gratuitous fanservice in Thrice Upon a Time.

This is a lot better than I remember it being. With the big caveat that they amped up the fanservice almost cynically and to the movie's detriment. That one cut focusing on Asuka's crotch while she is laying down and then tosses over is pretty uncomfortable. I want to strangle someone style for Asuka's test plug suit design and the coy self-aware joke. Speaking of which, I'm really not a fan of Asuka's usage in this film. Mari is the walking plot device I remember her being, even if Maaya Sakamoto gives the best performance she can with the material.

Pretty artless and a glorified tech demo retelling the first six episodes. Very briskly at that. Ramiel's reimagining is the only worthwhile use of 3DCG. Also a lot of Which stops being fun when the film gets extremely blatant about things being different.

I know there are a couple of different cuts but I can't remember which one is recommend the most. I will be watching the director's cut episodes, which I think lessens the importance of Death? Edit: Looking this shit up is confusing as heck. So apparently Death(True)² is the final cut that was part of Revival of Evangelion which is up on Netflix and also what Manga Entertainment used for the Death portion of Death and Rebirth. It's not how it depicts technology that drags it down. With cyberpunk and science fiction in general, how technology serves the narrative and its themes is much more important. I would say Lain's biggest failing is biting off more than it can chew. I feel that by the end, it beat me over the head with its themes and yet none of them were developed particularly well. The end result is something that comes across as messy and incoherent. The focus on metaphysical, spiritual, and needless plot details drag down the potentially good character study and societal commentary this may have otherwise been.

It's an interesting post-Evangelion mecha series. The parallels with Evangelion are unavoidable (and I would say intentional in some ways) but it does its own thing. It's the third series Bones made and it's bursting with talent despite being rough around the edges. The series overall looks pretty damn good for a digital series from 2002. A lot of shots/cuts of the animation are surprisingly above SD and it received a pretty good upscale for the year it released on BD in Japan (2011). No idea if Sentai improved or worsed the image quality. I'm hesitant to recommend it but I'm pretty fond of it partly out of nostalgia. It's an uneven show but I think the good qualities outweigh the mediocre/bad. I say watch the first three episodes and see what you think. As cool as the mecha designs are, just like Evangelion the fights are short but sweet (in most cases). The narrative is more focused on its core characters and some don't get as fleshed out as they need to be, especially for some (maybe a lot) of the melodrama. Edit: The English dub is overall pretty good (if you care about dubs). It's an early 00s ADV Films dub and has a certain feel to it that you don't see in modern dubs. Edit 2: Also the character designs have a unique quality to them. It's the same character designer as The Twelve Kingdoms, who also does all the lavish cover and promo art.I know and it will undoubtedly go on sale for $50 or less come Christmas, but still that's the MSRP and even $85 is BS for inadequate packaging. Also the bonus content is the same as the ADV dvds apparently.

This arc is becoming a real drag. The opening scene is really silly with child Kumiko being completely uninterested in the concert and then doing an instant 180. Well, that's a very child thing to do but the execution is off. Can't say I care about Kumiko's home life. Her sister is in the right but it's being framed like she isn't, with Kumiko being an supportive jerk because her sister took it out on her once years ago. Of course, Asuka's mother being abusive hasn't exactly been framed the best way either. I can't believe the opening recap showed the slap again over upbeat music. How tone deaf.

If they used LiS2 for a blueprint that would still be pretty risky if only from a production standpoint. (I can't even see Dontnod doing something like that again.) One thing I've been trying to argue is that True Colors shows that using a familiar blueprint doesn't guarantee that production will go smoothly. Also that risks can still be taken.

I don't think repurposing some tropes from LiS1 is inherently bad or safe. The team using LiS1 as a loose blueprint was actually a smart idea, given this is their first full entry in the series. Even doing that, the team still did some ambitious stuff. Actually having a blueprint and ways to "play it safe" is probably what allowed them to do more creative things in the game. Looking at True Colors' shortcomings, I'm glad they didn't aim to have a more ambitious structure because they clearly would not have been able to manage it. I'm not big on criticism that boils down to "this game used [insert trope]' without examining how the trope is utilized.

Compare Typhon against the Prescott family and other shady dealings in Arcadia Bay. The point is that the revelations about Jed and Typhon aren't meant to reflect badly on the town and its community. The bad actors can be compartmentalized. I got the best ending where everyone supports Alex, so that colors my view of things.I shouldn't speak so definitively, but it's a safe assumption that content was cut between the pandemic and video game development being what it is. There's a lot they can touch on including fleshing out Ryan, Steph, and the dynamic between them and Alex. It's very weird how little we see of the core trio actually together and I can only think that it was too costly/hard to mocap last year. Which meant they had to prioritize the most important scenes in the script. It's incredibly odd how in the final game, Alex tells Ryan about her powers almost instantly and then waits weeks(!) to tell Steph. There definitely was content cut and rewrites.I think it was the right choice to have the game be unrealistically positive. Both the players and the development team had to live through the Trump administration and the pandemic (which isn't even truly over). Then there's the fact that she wants to leave the town, which overlaps with Steph's role, and she leaves on the night of the festival. (Total setup for a romantic scenario.) I only suspect more True Colors content because the comic series has tied into True Colors (not via Max and Chloe's story, to be clear) though that was most likely for marketing purposes.

Still in Ch. 2 and the stuttering while walking around the town is annoying. This spot in particular causes a lot of stuttering if I move the camera around. Turning View Distance to low pretty much removes the stuttering, which means there's an internal bottle neck or it's my rig. I immediately lowered Effects Quality a notch which seemed to resolve but when I put it back up to cinematic GPU usage stayed the same. Some kind of shader compilation issue?

By the by, do you know which setting impacts VRAM usage the most? After looking at my Afterburner log, it gobbled up all of my VRAM over the course of a long play session of Ch. 1. Not sure if that's intended or memory leak. The performance of the game didn't tank or I would have noticed that sooner.

Haven't made it far in the game as I did some testing of graphical settings. I'll try to see about posting some image comparisons but, initially, it appears that pretty much all of the settings have very diminishing returns. View Distance and Post Processing Quality have the biggest differences between Low and Cinematic. Some settings like Effects Quality probably only affect the visuals for Alex's powers as I can't see any difference between Low and Cinematic. Also I'm convinced that a lot of the stuttering/hitching is due to asset streaming bottlenecks. During cutscenes there's a guaranteed stutter every time there is a cut. Current settings I'm using.

Of course I want to play the game at release with minimal issues. They both eventually come to terms with that, and then work towards getting into better places individually so their relationship can work. I feel like queer romance (particularly between women) gets scrutinized a lot more. Though to be fair, possessiveness is a common theme/conflict in yuri works. I'm not big on how Yamada and Yoshida handled Midori in Tamako Market for example, though that show had other issues. As a queer woman, Mizore absolutely speaks to me. Nozomi less so but the film is largely from Mizore's perspective, which is remarkably well done. I was ready for heavy modern/postermodern leanings but this is not what I was expecting. I can't tell if it's the late 90s aesthetic compounding things but some cuts being digitally painted/composited really throws me off. She isn't displayed as being particularly attached to the bar she owns, despite the background info implying it's something she should have been much more emotionally invested in.That's where they are fucking up in some ways. They can't treat each game as simply a chapter in a book. Each game is a book, and not doing enough to flesh out one of your absolute core characters in book one is a mistake. In chapter 2/3, Tifa talks about feeling trapped and her hesitation with Avalanche but that goes absolutely nowhere. Expanding on that, as well as what she did offscreen regarding Corneo, would have been nice. (Really wish they hadn't cut that chapter.)

It seems that by "60 FPS" they meant playback of the cutscenes would be better, as they are still 30 FPS. The base game cutscenes pre-patch were 720p and stuttery. If they are 1080p video, from the PS4 version just like the mod, that's probably what they meant by "improved bitrate." Edit: Apparently the AO glitch is limited to Nvidia cards. Thread Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Open Spoilers
To me they didn't succeed in telling a compelling story within their limitations. Which can be chalked up to a lot of things, one being the scope not being appropriate for the budget and time they had. Ch. 1 of Intermission falls into one of the same pitfalls as ch. 3 of the main story, trying to get you to care about the Sector 7 slums and its residents. The base story doesn't do a great job and this is even worse since Yuffie is even more of an outsider dealing with extremely shallow characters. One of my other big complaints about ch. 1 is it has a lot of, attempted, fanservice (oh look, it's Wedge and Jessie doing nothing of import) and half-assed connective tissue to address small plot details from the main story that aren't needed. The scene of Tifa learning about Corneo's men and then running off to never be seen again is the epitome of this. Does it help fill in a gap of the story? Technically, but it's easily extrapolated from the text of the base narrative. The main questline ends as a drawn out fetch quest that doesn't accomplish a whole lot nor explore a part of Midgar that really needed exploring. Zhijie along with the rest of that Avalanche cell (that are somehow well known in the area yet Barret's splinter cell are oblivious too) are not even really characters.

Finished Intermission. Rather unhappy with how pointless chapter 1 mostly is, which makes chapter 2 rushed as fuck particularly Sonon's arc. Bad storytelling on display here and I'm not even getting into the Deepground shit. That post-credits scene with Zack. Since they could do almost anything and they want to incorporate a lot of the compilation materials, I'm going to guess Geostigma or something like it shows up early in that timeline because reasons.

Hmm, going to assume 60 minute episodes. Maybe 10~ hours will be enough to cover the main story and Left Behind, with some new material. I feel like you are being deliberately dense about this. ._. Yeah, the romantic writing in RWBY is not good but people don't need a concrete reason to have romantic feelings towards someone. Part of the point was Blake didn't even realize how she felt towards Yang even though others around her picked up on it. That's not exactly uncommon for writing teenage/young adult romance. Especially for queer romance. The climax of Volume 3 wasn't exactly fully earned, given how shoddy the writing and storytelling for the Beacon Arc was.

I'd have to rewatch but I think what they tried to go for is that there was a chance for something between them, but Sun realized Blake's feelings for Yang before she did. Which is why he steps out of the picture and more or less gives his blessing before they part ways. Hell, even Adam recognized Blake's feelings for Yang. The big confrontation during the climax of Volume 3 is pretty damn deliberate.

I think it's appropriate to link this blog post again. It's pretty damning that CloverWors is owned by Aniplex, one of the biggest producers of anime, and yet they don't have the resource they need. You're burying your head in the sand if you think WEP's production falling apart has nothing to do with upper level management at CloverWorks. CoverWorks had three shows (The Promised Neverland Season 2, Horimiya, and Wonder Egg Priority) airing during the winter season and then a fourth (Shadow House) for the spring season. Also guess who was on the production committee for all of those shows? Aniplex, the subsidiary of Sony Music that owns CloverWorks.

Yes that's part of the equation, but upper management is responsible for assessing if a team can handle a project and making sure they have the resources they need. There's no one person to point at for WEP turning out how it did since it's obvious there were failings at multiple levels. Both the director and writer are easy to blame, and I do blame them especially the latter, but there's a bigger picture here of a lot going wrong.

That's a very good point to make. I almost included it in my post that I'm duck footed to a degree, so such things can carry on into adulthood. My post could have been worded better, as I don't think a character being pigeon toed or having knock knees is always suspect.I'm thinking it's a case of the performer having those traits or them potentially altering the animations based off of Sakamoto, as she did not do the motion capture. Most people wouldn't notice what I did because Aerith's usual attire is a maxi length dress, and most will get her crimson/scarlet dress in ch. 9 which doesn't show off her legs and knees as much.

Thread Why women criticise sexualised character designs | OT3 | "Her ass is part of her character."
On the subject, I'm currently replaying VII Remake on PS5 and I've been paying more attention to how the women are animated. One thing I didn't notice the first go around is that Aerith is pigeon toed and has a degree of knock-knee. The interesting thing to me is that it seems to be taken into account for her walking and running gait, I think. Aerith definitely has a different gait than Tifa though it's hard to tell with her maxi length dress. I didn't really notice it until seeing her in one of her dresses for ch. 9 that is dovetailed, thus exposing her legs more. I'll be replaying ch. 9 again soon and will record some video. I find myself wondering if they really did factor that into her walk/run animations. While stylized, the animations in the game do aim for a degree of realism. Chances are they just made her that way for the typical reasons. However, while I was watching some concert footage of Maaya Sakamoto (Aerith's Japanese voice actress), she does appear to have both as well though not to the same degree. In the footage some of her walking is exaggerated since she is putting on a show, but she is in sneakers and there are parts where she is plainly walking. Makes me wonder if this is a case where a character having those traits is modeled after a real person.

It's definitely more egregious. My comment focused on the sprites because I had never noticed that before in a game. When the subject does come up, I do try to be more considerate of my wording given the post you had made in the past.Aerith's motion capture actress is . It's not a direct credit so there may have been more than one performer, but she has tweeted about performing as Aerith. I don't think knock knees as a design choice/direction could have been for fetish reasons in this case, for the reasons you point out. It's hard to speculate the "why" but I only made my post because of the footage of Sakamoto I saw, after analyzing Aerith's in-game animations. Aerith was not pigeon toed or anything in the original VII, in fact she was duck footed like most of the cast then (both chibi and battle models).

A Zero Suit overhaul to me should accomplish two things 1) look like something that interfaces with the Power Suit and 2) has enough practicality to look like it could protect her from the elements and small weapons fire. Since Samus is only going to be depicted in increasing fidelity, I wish they could make the Power Suit do some MCU Iron Man type stuff when being equipped or unequipped. It's obvious that having the Power Suit materialize and dematerialize like magic was a justifiable cost efficient approach in the past, due to budget and technical limitations. Since the Power Suit in Dread is even more techno-organic than previous Power Suits, they could ape this.

I'd never recommend the series, I felt that way before the finale, but there are some real standout episodes. It just sucks that even the best episodes have red flags in the script or scenes that can't be given benefit of the doubt now. Ep. 6 is probably my favorite episode because of how well it's directed and the core message of the episode, but it's tainted by scenes like where Neiru and Rika strongly suggest Ai likes Sawaki. (Which is right after speculation that he is a predator using Ai's mom to get to her.) It's also the episode that introduces the pets, which are a thematic dead-end. Then there's the fact that Ai's character development in that episode gets flushed down the toilet, with the very last scene ultimately going nowhere. The whole series is compromised and frustrating as hell.

First off, "transgenders" is not the correct way to address a group of trans(gender) people. "Male to female" has become passé, especially as non-binary people have become exponentially more prominent alongside binary trans people. Referring to a trans and/or non-binary person or group by their gender identity is better, in this case you are wanting to consult trans women (and implicitly transfeminine non-binary people). I don't think the average trans woman is going to take offense if you are using "man" interjectionally when not directing it at anybody. For example someone saying, "Man, this situation sucks," wouldn't bother me. If that makes sense, basically talking to the room/yourself.

Using 0.6.1. Finally getting the performance I want, though not 100% perfect. Using all the default settings except for disabling Drop Late Frames. I occasionally get a hitch complete with brief audio cutout but very tolerable, and a lot better than random episodes of stuttering. Also I gave up on 4K and settled for DSR 2.00x so something like 2160p. The game has poor image quality and 4K really isn't worth it.

Agreed. I feel like they didn't do this for Intergrade since it would require a rethink of the menu UI, which is pretty elegant and deliberate. I imagine having the ability to swap materia loadouts mid battle would require a substantial amount of work under the hood.

Yeah, I've never been a fan of how clunky the controls in Super Metroid are. Playing Fusion and Zero Mission before it didn't help.I'm fully expecting the retail game to have the same performance issues, sadly. I just hope the game's engine doesn't have internal bottlenecks and the inevitable Switch Pro can brute force the game to have a perfect 60 FPS and maybe decrease load times. The transitions between areas probably isn't final but it's been established by games like Link's Awakening that the Switch has bottlenecks that affect asset streaming.

Since few probably played Samus Returns in Fusion Mode thanks to Nintendo's bullshit, the new art of the Fusion Suit looks to retcon the design in-line with how it appears in Samus Returns. Concept art for three variations of the Fusion Suit in Samus Returns. I hope we get to play in the Fusion Suit during the prologue of the game. Yeah, Zero Mission introduced the Zero Suit and so far has been the only game to actually utilize it outside of cutscenes/fanservice. It was effective in making Samus feel vulnerable and near powerless (for better and worse) while leading to a tense (and a bit annoying) section of the game. Edit: It's a moment that in hindsight rubs me the wrong way with how weak and vulnerable they wanted Samus to be without the Power Suit, and the narration paints her as feeling vulnerable and uncertain if she can even beat the odds. It laid the foundation for one particularly terrible cutscene/story beat in Other M. (If I'm recalling the scene right, Other M is so bad.)

I imagine the design principles behind the creation of the Zero Suit were to give her something that could "make sense" under the power armor, make her appear vulnerable but not not utterly without protection, and "reward the player." Also be easy to animate as a sprite on the GBA. The Zero Suit exists because of Zero Mission and them feeling the need to make Samus extremely vulnerable for a portion of that game. Perhaps it was always inevitable given all the missteps in Other M.

I don't think so but maybe I'm just being too optimistic. Looking at official renders, the flaps adjust to the angle of her leg. I suspect they may function like air brakes on a plane, given the bigger focus on sliding. The green circles on her boots may be wheels as well. Edit: I think one design goal may have been to give her a different silhouette for her boots.

The reception in here has been on the positive side, with two people commenting on the legs. (With me being iffy on the boots but only for aesthetic reasons.)Won't disagree with you there. Samus outside of the Power Suit has been a problem since Day 1, to differing degrees, and the Zero Suit compounded things terribly. This is where I start disagreeing with you, the Power Suit started becoming more feminized with Super Metroid. That's when the Power Suit (technically the Varia Suit) started to have the distinct waistline along with an hourglass figure. There's more to the design to offset that but it set the standard for the Suit up until Other M. Other M is when Power Suit was made sleeker/smoother and I guess you could say feminized a bit more. Also when the neck became more pronounced. (Looking at in-game models it really started with the Prime games.) This was the design used as the base for Samus Returns. However the Varia Suit ended up being bulkier and less smooth in Samus Returns, putting it closer to the Super/Prime era standard.I can partly see where you are coming from regarding Dread's Power Suit being more sexualized. I'd say it looks more like light Mass Effect human armor in terms of it emphasizing a traditionally feminine form (from the chest down). However, she doesn't have high heels, she has chunky boot heels. The design for the ankle and segmentation of the heel just makes it look different. I don't think it's nearly as incomparable to previous designs as you think, considering this is probably the new Power Suit with one Varia tier upgrade at most. Any suit upgrades past the Varia tier are almost never shown prior to release, so I expect her final suit's form to be less sleek and have more flourishes. Even in the most unflattering shot I can find, it doesn't bother me. When you start talking about her chest armor being pronounced to evoke breasts you lose me completely. Try as I might, I can't see whatever it is you are perceiving. Though with the above shot and one segment in the reveal trailer, I can see where you are coming from regarding male gaze in the cutscenes. I disagree about her being animated too lightly, there's still some stiffness to her slow walk. Samus is a warrior with the grace of a gymnast in power armor, some amount of lithe is to be expected. At the end of the day, I really dig her design and she looks like a power fantasy to me.

I've seen what my fellow queer women can do with Max and Chloe in the fansphere, but honestly it's always better to see what queer women and folks can make that's their own. I'm really curious what the creative team for Deck Nine's new game is, regardless of whether it is LiS related. One thing that puts Before the Storm ahead of LiS proper is Deck Nine games actually had at least two women in the writer's room. Doing some cursory research, it looks like one of them (Felice Kuan) may be the lead writer for what they have been working on. Ooh, the other woman (Mallory Littleton) has been promoted to a narrative designer at DN per Linkedin. Assistant writer -> staff writer -> narrative designer. I apologize for the offensive wording. That was a very loaded phrase to use which I regretted using almost immediately. I intended to convey that I feel a creative team primarily based in the U.S. is better suited for the series and the stories it tells. More specifically stories that aim for a certain level of authenticity, which I would say is a key aspect and selling point of the series. I will eat my words if Deck Nine ends up tackling subject matter that would be better suited in other hands. (Before the Storm was certainly not perfect. Especially since like LiS1 it simply acknowledges the existence of indigenous Americans while borrowing from their culture(s) and whitewashing history.) I realize that diminishes the efforts of the French led team for the original game and LiS2, which did collaborate with some U.S. based narrative designers and writers. I do commend DONTNOD for what they were able to accomplish, as I wouldn't be a fan of the series without their work and creation of the series. Delphine brought up good points about the effects of U.S. (soft) imperialism on the realities of video game development for DONTNOD and the industry at large. Which gave me something to chew on and think about.I hope the above is a satisfactory reply to your concerns as well. You're right about people with different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds being important for creating a diverse team. I admit my original post, as written, does effectively advocate for a completely "American" creative team. Which is nebulous and you're right to call that out for being such. I mean sure, if you ignore all real world context from the last few years. Edit: I don't think it's downright showing Hong Kong in a negative light but some kind of odd neutral to play it safe. HK looks nice with plenty of lit up skyscrapers but it gets wrecked and is really only set dressing for the climax. The characters don't actually do anything there unrelated to the fight, and HK has no meaning to them. Also the evil mega corporation has their headquarters/main facility there but the villain/owner isn't Chinese which is mighty convenient. (Implication there if I were to do a very unfavorable reading is that only in HK could this have happened and not "mainland" China, since HK has some autonomy and thus susceptible to foreign influences.) The final fight could have been almost any other major city on a coast but they still went with HK.
