I love the idea of adding in more content on Disc 2, but even with SaGa Frontier Remastered setting sky-high standards, I'd never, ever get my hopes up for it. The heartbreak would be brutal. That said, honestly? Even an as-is Xenogears HD would make me melt.

The Switch version got an update patch shortly before launch that to have improved performance from what Switch-based reviewers experienced beforehand. I can't speak firsthand on this one since my review copy is for PS4. But I saw a clip of a Switch reviewer's progress on the game during embargo that looked worse than what I was dealing with at the time. The reviewer in question took a quick vid of their experience after the patch, and it definitely seems to have improved somewhat.

I only know a little bit, and in this particular case, I think it would be best to withhold info, sorry. <3 I guess I'll add that the budget's probably nowhere close to FF7 Remake's, but then, that's like saying "looks like Triangle Strategy won't be given that sweet, sweet Grand Theft Auto 6 cash." Not really surprising, and hardly indicative of a bad remaster! Plus, I haven't heard anything about this being a multi-part epic or anything. I just have a lot of faith that it'll effectively replace the modern version of FF9 we've got right now, with its kinda questionable quality.

Episode lengths in the first season got shorter and shorter until the sixth, at which point they turned around and kept getting longer (with major exception to the penultimate ep). I'm hoping we're just a bit late in turning things around this time, haha. 38:30 or so, wasn't it? That's like a regular-length Mandalorian ep ffs.

Yeah, it's paltry. I feel like the two Frakes episodes almost could have been one supersized ep or something. 33 for this, and what, 37 or so for the previous one? Then again, if they did that everybody would be baffled when the eps end up feeling like the mid-season chapters that they are, rather than something huge, hah.

Dice, my friend of many words (many which are good-written). Answering a few things: (1) It sure was a replay! A rad replay at that. (2) Oh, I love it. There's nothing else quite like it in any JRPG I've played, and I like to think I've played my fair share. There's a stillness to it, punctuated by melancholy melody, right? It's gorgeous. (3) Oooh, oooh. I'll do both! Everyone, please look forward to the crystal-clear sounds of Another World's map theme, "On the Beach of Dreams - Another World." I would be very happy if you enjoyed it! Along similar lines, I hope you will think back on your life and look forward to a lovely, mystery-filled future as you listen to "Reminiscing ~ Uneraseable Memory." I would link these, but I think it would be nice if you heard them in their prettier higher-quality form in-game first. And I have no idea why I typed that paragraph like I'm some kind of Square Enix producer or something. I also want everyone, not just me, to befriend Starkey. It would be good to show him that humanity is worth protecting and to teach him to always say "you're welcome" after receiving a gift. Please also help Riddel through her grief, she's a good woman with a bright future ahead of her and a fantastic sense of eyeliner application. Aww, thanks! <3

Maybe I'll change my mind if ten years go by and nothing's ever announced, but at least for right now, I'm quite glad that the writers didn't skip Laconia or anything. 7-9 is my favorite stretch of the book series overall. And while I would imagine the best case scenario at this point is for some kind of miniseries a while down the road, I'll take whatever I can get for it. Regardless, sticking to their guns was the right move IMO. Just sort of ignoring what is, ultimately, the bigger issue in this universe would have made subsequent rewatches feel limp.

Thread I want to start Pokémon with either Crystal or LeafGreen. Can anyone recommend guides for general play? Also tips for beginners, games to skip etc
It's safe to say few would argue the fact that you should skip Diamond & Pearl in favor of Platinum. It's simply the superior version in every conceivable way. (Someone out there is going to point out, , in favor of the originals. Maybe. But they're wrong.) Equally safe to say skip Ruby & Sapphire. I'll be honest, I'm on a very quick break right now, so I haven't read everything in detail thread-wise. If that's already a no-brainer to you, great! There's no third version to X & Y, of course. And that's terribly unfortunate. But it is what it is. Just worth mentioning since... damn. There should have been. :P I'd suggest skipping Sun & Moon in favor of UltraSun & UltraMoon. Now, this one's more contentious, because many players prefer the narrative climax of the first versions. And I can see why. It doesn't bother me very much, and I say this as the kind of weirdo who tends to enjoy the stories as part of the Pokemon experience, haha. Go with your heart (and I guess the majority opinion) on this, but just know that if you play SM and then USUM, you're going to be retreading most of that ground big-time. USUM is, narrative quibbles notwithstanding, bigger, better, and even a bit harder. It's good stuff unless you just abhor Alola or something. This isn't all that uncommon, but I think it's a great region. You can probably skip Let's Go, Pikachu & Let's Go, Eevee. FireRed and LeafGreen are certainly still the superior remakes, IMO. The only thing they're missing, and this will feel retroactively huge to you but maybe not so bad before you experience it, is that the Physical/Special split begins with Gen 4 (DPPt/HGSS). This is huge. It enhances the gameplay so damn much. So, if you elect to play HeartGold & SoulSilver alone, rather than playing Crystal followed by them - and I think that's a reasonably fair decision, for what it's worth - certainly do play FireRed first. Doubling down, tripling down, whatever, on playing Black & White as Black2 and White2. It's not universally believed, though it's not all that far off, that these games have the best stories in the series. While that isn't the highest bar, it's still better than I think many players were anticipating at the time. And yeah, they form one cohesive story between them. It's unlike anything that Game Freak has done since, and that's a real shame, but for numerous reasons, the games didn't sell that great. So... yeah. Lastly, I will go ahead and be a devil's advocate on Sword & Shield, in case no one else elects to do so. On their own, they're not great, but they do some things that haven't really been done before and it's still worth it for that. If barely. The whole gym/championship shtick has never felt better production-wise. Galar celebrates that stuff in a way that the anime always has, but the games seldom (if ever) have. Here's the thing, though. Sword & Shield are, like, a 6 on their own. But between the Isle of Armor and especially The Crown Tundra, they're at least a 7 with the Expansion Pass. I'd say closer to an 8, even. But the Expansion Pass costs more money, and the Switch titles already cost more than what came beforehand. (Though if you're in the market for an authentic copy of any of the DS games sans Diamond & Pearl, you're already looking at a lot more cash than that. Scarcity and all.) I hope that helps!

Reading the original post, my thoughts were, in essence, that while I disagree with you on nearly every level it might be fun to have a back-and-forth about various differing opinions since you didn't really write anything in-depth about the character arcs you disliked. That's excellent. I'm not sure any other current shows I've enjoyed this much (or more; Foundation clearly has its issues) crack the top 10 at any point. When I went to see The Rise of Skywalker, the audience I was in was nonstop adrenaline. They were that movie. Had an absolute blast. These days, finding someone with half as much enthusiasm toward that flick - at least in my experience - is needle-in-hay stuff. I worked at a movie theater during the summer of 2018, too, and there were a couple of films, really low-rated fare, that audiences walked out from visibly apathetic or downright stirred to anger. A few times, seemingly as if lightning struck in just the right way, everyone stepped out so happy you'd think they found religion. As strange as it can seem, sometimes specific audience reactions can prove anecdotal in the final telling.

Thread FINAL FANTASY XVI announced for PS5
You can nix the vast majority of those icons. MMOs never appealed to me until FFXIV. For the rec, I dislike most of the game's multiplayer aspects - I'm not like a 100% "convert" and the odds are slim I'll ever try another MMO - but since so much of the game doesn't require multiplayer, I've actually made it through and it's one of my favorite FFs. Easily. Don't worry, I'm not going to do the whole "if you haven't played FFXIV, you know nothing, Jon Snow!!!!!" thing. But the team is working to incorporate Shadowbringers' "Trust" system into all prior content in the months and years to come. That system turns your longtime allies, the Scions - who genuinely feel more like a Final Fantasy party than you might suspect is possible - into actual party members who will fight alongside you in dungeons so that you don't need to play with other humans. It makes the game feel even more like a """real""" JRPG than it already, , does. My advice is to maybe keep tabs on when that system is incorporated into past content and if Square finds a way to apply something similar to trials (big boss fights are also a multiplayer affair) as well. If so, the entire main storyline will be playable solo. (Rather than 90% of it, as it presently stands.)

I should add that I don't mean to seem callous toward anybody who didn't find it as "obvious" as I did - I can easily see how the marketing could, and would, convince folks otherwise. It's a case of the sum being something of a facade; it's the individual parts they've shown that suggest something more akin to Monster Hunter. I'm one of those people who tries to prepare for the perceived "worst" ASAP, too, so when so much emphasis was on Jubilife City I immediately told myself there's a decent probability that'd be our hub and there wouldn't be any full-fledged settlements elsewhere. Thread Worst titles for individual entries in long-running franchises?
If a franchise is around long enough, there's a decent chance it will either quit with conventional numerically-based sequel titles or - at a minimum - offer more unique names for spin-off entries. Final Fantasy Adventure, Super Mario World, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, God of War: Chains of Olympus. That stuff. And of course, there are plenty of franchises that never incorporated numerical titles in the first place - Super Smash Bros Brawl, Pokemon X & Y, so on and so forth. What, in your mind, are some of the absolute clunkers in long-running franchise titles? The usual suspects, like Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, are often said to fit the bill here. I've seen folks laugh at Xenoblade Chronicles X as well. Or EA's pseudo-rebranding of Star Wars Battlefront; don't confuse Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront II with Star Wars Battlefront (2015) and Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)! Unofficial titles, of course, but it's how the fandom differentiates them because there's... no simpler way to do so. My (potential) dark-horse candidate is Monster Hunter: World. "World" is just such a weak, singular, word to utilize as a sub-title, and even though I try to enunciate the full title with the same neutral inflection ("Monster Hunter World") my brain always wants me to pause and say "Monster Hunter - World" and as stupid as this probably reads, it just hurts!

As you can imagine, I did my best to inform people (most were there for the PS5, unsurprisingly, but we still had a long line just for Xbox) but many of them refused to believe me. Who was fun in Sun and Moon? Lana was boring, Lillie had everything going for her to not be boring but still managed to disappoint other than that one good arc, Kiawe repeated his volcano shtick so often that any and all complaints against Cilan being one-dimensional are automatically invalid by contrast, Mallow was like the one non-Kukui character my friend liked but I'm not even sure I did, Kukui was probably the best? Bewear was the actual best, but Bewear was the only repeating gag that got more than an actual gag outta me. Sophocles literally ruined the word Sophocles for me until the end of my days. Pretty cool that DA2 has enough fans to make it halfway to Inquisition. I don't mean that in a sarcastic way! It's just that I suspect even the most ardent of DA2 diehards recognize the game is deeply, deeply flawed; the strength of its cast and overall premise carries it in spite of those flaws. For me, DA2 is like a 6/10; really not great by any stretch but better than a lot of other games. My personal favorite entry is Inquisition, though before its DLCs hit, I think it was like a 7.5 for me? By the time Trespasser dropped, it had risen to a 9. I'm honestly not 100% sure either, lol. If there's something more definitive deeper in his twitter feed history, I haven't seen it. I tend to shy away from reading the comments sections on his posts because there are just so many... syco-fans, if you will, but all the inevitable "OH I KNOW ONE PERSON WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER... No G'Kar/Londo/Delenn -- you're basing that on JMS citing them as reasons not to continue the original, I'm guessing? Personally, I think it's still likely that we'll see them recast and in leading roles again. When JMS talks about keeping "evergreen" elements, I feel like those characters number among them. But yeah, agreed on it not being a straightforward reboot. He cited Westworld and BSG; BSG especially really sets the potential tone for his creative approach here. We could have a Morden everybody knows and loves in the first season who then shoots Garibaldi before winking at Londo. We could have a Sheridanclair, like you said. We could wind up with Na'Toth as a perspective character and G'Kar remaining enigmatic for years! The Telepath War could happen Lots of nuts stuff to envision. I can totally see that B4 thing. :P

Gotta say, I seem to be on another planet from most of the Star Wars fandom these days. Cassian Andor is one of the better Disney-era characters IMO. And that's not some sort of indictment, either. He's a genuine grey-area figure working a grey-area job with a talented actor behind the wheel. What's funny is that JMS was displeased with the low-budget aspects of Lost Tales, which is a big part of the reason more weren't made. Yeah, the hallways on the station were oddly vacant most of the time. But other than that, I thought they looked good by 2007 DTV standards!

Not a rumor, for the record -- he proclaimed it rather loudly! And I'm not sure what to say here, since I do think the fourth and fifth seasons of The Expanse look noticeably more expensive than the SyFy years. I just don't think they look like , of course -- but Amazon's checkbooks seem to keep things more in... well... , unless they're absolutely monstrous productions. But I'll echo others here -- the first two, at least, are pretty great. Even if it slides qualitatively from here, it's got a fair bit of breathing room on the descent before I pull the plug. And it doesn't strike me that that's what happens since the reviews seem to be more critical of the earlier (and especially middle) chapters. So long as it finishes OK, I'm in for next year. It's the first eight episodes out of ten. Several reviewers seem to applaud the show's direction toward the end of that eight episodes, saying it picks up momentum in a good way. FWIW.

Oh thank god, I was wondering when this would go up. I didn't want to be the one to make it since I finished the game before launch. I would be way ahead by default. Loved the story overall. The mirroring of the "Renans" and the real Renans, both tools for the Great Spirit, was some "real Star Trek hours." And I'm always a sucker for found family themes because that stuff resonates with me deeply on a personal level. I was really hoping Vholran would pop up for a final duel and I started to lose hope he crashed his friggin' hijacked starship down to go after Alphen. I laughed so hard at that (not necessarily in a bad way). I also freaked the fuck out midway through that fight because I played on Moderate and he was doing enough damage to me that I needed to spam healing items. And suddenly, no menu access! When I realized that it was because Alphen had become invincible I sighed with such vivid relief. As is often the case with me, I wish the pre-credits ending fare was richer. Alphen's "let's go" holds weight as the last line, but I could have used a better look at the world! Still, I was in tears. <3 And the mid-credits sketches, revealing everybody's near-future. That made up for things a good bit for me.

There's nothing quite like it, but BSG (2003-2009) is kind of similar from a tonal perspective. Have you seen Star Trek DS9? In the latter half, it gets nicely serialized, which I realize isn't the crux of what makes The Expanse tick but it's certainly part of the equation. I wouldn't say it's . Ideally, a little more from them would be integrated into the game. Oh, believe me, FFXVI is practically tattooed on my arm at this point. I'm so thirsty for it! I'm a big FFT/Tactics Ogre fan, though, so PTS is pretty high up there in my "non-FFXVI" hype list, haha.

FFXIII is more polished. But the core just isn't particularly compelling. FFXV is far less polished with significantly more ups, IMO.

Ugh, yep. The reporter... I don't know. I don't want to type "handled it like a champ" when I wouldn't have blamed him for behaving far less... "professional" about it. But damn, he really was a saint in that situation. Unflappable. There's a good word for it. Unflappable.

This was the only FPS game I grew up with. Full stop, the . I don't remember why, but I wasn't able to keep playing after the conclusion of the first chapter. I'd fight the lava boss and then... I'd get a message about that being it? I think I had some kind of shareware version? It's great going back after all these years and seeing what happens next.

I used to grind to Level 100 by the first half of Disc 2. It never gave me a lick of trouble because I'd junction 100 insanely powerful spells to as many stats as possible.did I level to 100? I couldn't friggin' tell you. But I did.

Whenever I read up on why leveling is a bad idea in this game post-30 or so I kinda giggle at my past self. Kid!Quinton recognized early on that it's a static 1000 Experience Points per level-up, didn't understand why leveling was a bad idea, and would generally power Squall to around 70 or so on Disc 1 and then 100 by midway through Disc 2. What's funny is that I don't remember having more difficulty with the game as a result -- but I'm pretty sure it's because with all that leveling came so much GF-grinding, Card Modding, inane Draw cycling, farming for weapon upgrades, and so forth. It more than balanced itself out in the end.

Thread Jessica Steen explains why Stargate recast her character Dr. Weir
Atlantis' ratings were kind of crumbling and hit their lowest point a few episodes into season 4. (I believe "Doppelganger" with 0.9 was the nadir. Oh, how times have changed.) But it did bounce back somewhat, and when TiVo and similar DVR recording devices began being taken into consideration it was illustrated that SGA never really lost much of its audience; they simply time-shifted. This was tough to lure lucrative advertising deals with and common across the industry at the time. It was essentially the precursor to the streaming explosion a few years later. I guess I threw all that exposition out in the above paragraph to say that I think Tapping's arrival truly did help. Adored Weir, though. Maybe my favorite character on the show, that one. The continued sidelining of her as the series went on can't have been fun for Higginson. I'm glad she came back for the fourth-season two-parter, at least. That said, it's nice to finally have some insight into why Jessica Steen was replaced. Steen made an excellent first impression in "Lost City," and while Higginson won me over with ease, I would have loved to see Steen's take move forward as well. The actresses brought pretty different dynamics to Weir.

Thread Star Trek Franchise |OT| To Boldly Go.....
As someone who's happy with like 99% of what the modern Trek fare brings to the table... yeah, the sprawling Blade Runner turbolift metro transit system is... something.Agreed.Agreed.I actually think the fourth and fifth seasons are fairly fabulous. I'll also award a special note to the second season for making the first look good by comparison.I think the first season's OK. The second is when it really goes all-in on the TNG knockoffs. It's also when the show's ratings began to drop to an alarming degree. There's a particularly dire stretch around the middle of the way through the season. Like clockwork, the audience evaporated. The third season is great. I like it even more than the fourth, which is also great.First season's good. Second is better. Third is roughly tied with the second. They're all quite different, which is something I really like about the show. But if Discovery is ever going to "settle in," now would be the time. I concur that the third season's on great footing.Woefully uneven, but the highs are handily some of the best first-season episodes in the franchise. In particular, "Remembrance," "Nepenthe," and the last quarter or so of the season finale are all superb.I don't love it. I'll just say that. :P

Yup! That's why I left a disclaimer about it. I didn't think it'd get pushed back but I knew it'd be wise to mention that it's been weeks so anything goes. I hypothesized yesterday that perhaps Yoshida himself is the reason it no-showed. Maybe Square higher-ups almost won a debate on whether or not to show the game! I dunno. But it'd track?

It honestly isn't. It's always been handled better than I would have expected and more carefully than I've seen anyplace else. The fact that we still wind up in situations like this make me feel like an alternate reality in which nobody ever said a thing would indeed be better for people's blood pressure, though.

Word, yeah, I hear you. I'm nowhere near as prolific on staff as many other mods are, tbh -- I'm constantly trying to improve my CV and seeking places to contribute writing to etc -- but it's certainly something that could use some improvement, I'd say. I legit feel like Era's done a pretty good (not perfect!) job of finding ways to respond accordingly when stuff gets bad so I'll happily put in word that stuff could use some fine-tuning. I think we all know, but I'm just one small part of a big team and some of those folks are working crazy hard to keep this community together. <3
