Thread Any tech wizards around to help me with a weird PS5 WiFi issue?
Finally got a PS5 yesterday. Yay! Everything works great except that it only detects my 2.4ghz WiFi SSID. Our household has a 5ghz SSID as well, and for speed reasons I’d prefer to tap into that. (The FFXIV PS5 client is taking over 20 hours to download on 2.4!) The overwhelming majority of 5ghz-related WiFi problems I’ve seen online pertain to the need to switch the PS5’s detecting option to either prefer 5ghz, which forces the console to connect, or to make sure the console is searching for 5ghz in general. Neither of these solutions apply. Every other WiFi-enabled device in our household, including the Switch and PS4 — which are both located directly beside the PS5 — has no trouble finding our 5ghz SSID. More bafflingly, the PS5 detects neighbors’ 5ghz networks just fine — but they’re locked, of course, and also stealing is bad. <_< I spoke with Sony tech support late last night and an amicable fellow had me restart the router, move the PS5, relocate the couch that’s in the middle of the living room, yadda-yadda. Afterward, my tech-savvy roommate friend attempted to get the PS5 to manually detect our 5ghz network. Nope. At this point, the only thing I can think of is to contact our ISP, Spectrum, and ask a tech to swing by and look into things. Obviously I can’t count on Spectrum’s employee being a PS5 guru, but we have been told in the past that our apartment building is especially congested and that (get this) whenever technicians come out to hook up somebody’s internet they try to prioritize that setup at other households’ expense. Maybe that helps. Maybe it doesn’t. I have no earthly idea. I am a writer. I do not know how to do this thing. Does anyone here have any suggestions? Thanks!

Thread Dipping Popeyes' Chicken Tenders into Mashed Potatoes with Cajun Gravy
You start out frustrated because they can't sell you the Cajun gravy on its lonesome, so you go ahead and order the tates just for the gravy. But you aren't frustrated, because you're the one who gets to dip your chicken tenders in the gravy. The employees have to keep dealing with annoying people with strange requests -- like you. You're also pretty sure they used to be able to sell the Cajun gravy by itself, too, but whatever. 2021. You cover your chicken tenders in potatoes because you're trying to get the most Cajun gravy per bite that you conceivably can. It's good. Damn good. And then it comes to you. The chicken's pretty good dipped in tates even without the gravy. The satisfying crunch blends perfectly with the smooth and creamy tate. Before you know it, you've dipped your Cajun fries in the tates. You've dipped your biscuit in the tates. You never needed a spoon for your tates. Because the rest of your food acted as an adhesive. Your Sweet Heat dipping sauce is left unopened. Your Blackened Ranch will remain confined 'neath its plastic wrapping. You don't need what Popeyes thinks you want. You need the tates.

Thread (Massive Spoilers) Say what you will about Star Trek: Picard but *that* scene from the season finale is absolute gold
It's been about a year since first season wrapped. To the shock and awe of absolutely no one, there is no fandom consensus on whether or not it was good. Opinions range from saying it's the best thing has done in ages to calling it a dumpster fire and "Kurtzman's last straw." (Surprise: ) My opinion echoes many others: It's a solid effort and worth watching, albeit with some considerable caveats along the way. Agnes Jurati's redemption feels unearned; the first half of the two-part season finale is too much time is devoted to Narek's Soji faux-mance; Narissa is Space Cersei by way of a sequel. (All right, full disclosure: I enjoy her anyway, albeit ironically.) And while I'm almost never kind of fan nitpicker (most tech-related complaints completely fly over my head, tbqh), I do find the idea of 200+ Romulan warbirds showing up post-supernova to be... odd. There's also a lot that I do enjoy. "Stardust City Rag," the Seven of Nine episode that "destroys the integrity of or whatever, is a winner. I don't care that Icheb's final fate is one of the most disturbingly tone-shifting in franchise history -- in context it clicks. Rios and Raffi don't make the best inaugural impression, but I still like them. I really like Soji and don't mind that "Dahj seemed more interesting," as some say. "Nepenthe" is like the one thing about that most agree is a gem and I am right there with them on that one. Elnor is an excellent new addition and I trust he'll have more to chew on next season. I don't even hate the central plot conceit of an AI galactic threat; sure, it's... akin to sophomore plotline, and yeah, we don't need universe-ending stakes every damn time, but I'm mostly OK with it, anyway. But more than anything, it's this -- the culmination of Jean-Luc Picard's heartaches over the loss of a dear friend. I get the criticisms that the TNG feature films pushed the Picard/Data friendship to an odd degree, given that Data/Geordi was the bigger part of the show. But by the end of the show's run, there was more than enough chemistry and care between captain and android to suit me. Seeing our dear Jean-Luc, once again played to perfection by Sir Patrick, wracked with grief was a twofold winner. Not only did it make for an excellent character arc that gave us a terrific narrative "way in" for Soji; it also directly addressed the fact that most of us (if not all...) were dissatisfied with the fact that was our 24th-century "series finale" for 18 years and Data's sacrifice, while it could have worked in a far better flick, is so sudden and unearned. It is as if Michael Chabon and his fellow scribes, as well as Stewart and Brent Spiner themselves, fully understood that. Though the hand-wave regarding B-4 is hilariously blunt ("oh, uh, yeah, he wasn't sentient after all or whatever"), it was worth pinching narrative nerves in order to give us a story of one man's search for peace following a dear friend's parting. It might not have worked. We might not have gotten a satisfying conclusion. If that happened, well, that would be a bitter pill to swallow, given that the writers clearly wished to wash away the blot. Instead, they succeeded, and we wound up with one of 's greatest scenes in all its 54.5 years and counting. You can stop watching around 3:47 or so if you'd like -- the rest is outside the context of this topic, showing the first seconds following the scene. Undoubtedly, Hey, whatever. That's OK. I'm sharing my love here. Even if I liked the season less than I do, it all would have been worth it for this. It's goddamn beautiful.

Thread 3 Years Ago, Dragon Ball Super's Finale Aired and one of the hypest moment in Dragon Ball history was shown
Having watched and for the first time between 2017 and 2019, I gotta be real, “hot take” or not: DB = DBS > DBZ I still like DBZ a fair bit, but between the Buu arc not exactly wowing me and the overall decrease in focused character work/fun interplay, it was a bit disappointing to me relative to the original. I feel like DBS amped up the excellent relationships between the characters; DBS Vegeta in particular is just phenomenal. If that came at the cost of noteworthily mixed art quality and a downward tick in grit and originality, no big worries to me. And if folks aren’t generally as impressed with the fights as with DBZ, again, I don’t especially mind. I’m mostly here for the characters. Roshi aside (I’m sure the broader net will label this comment “peak Era,” but the old man who uh literally tries to molest young women trope sucks and shouldn’t be there?), I like damn near everyone. And I still can’t get over how cool it is that Pilaf and his adorable oafs not only returned; Mai herself became a major character for a while. Genius.

Thread Major Final Fantasy VII Remake spoilers! Is ___ dead?
Here's a fun one. Or "fun," depending on how much you like or dislike it! We've got the whole ending shebang that everyone has discussed to death, including the survival of Biggs and fairly, if not rock-solidly, implied survival of Jessie. There's also the Zack schtick, which everybody and their mother is still going on about nearly a year later. But what about Wedge...? To my mild surprise, several of my friends didn't even think about this until after the fact, when I broached the subject with them one-on-one. This sequence is so abrupt, and its abruptness extends to its execution -- it fades to black rather than showing us Wedge's demise outright. The whole thing lasts less than a minute. Some I've spoken with have cited all that as a reason to believe he's not dead. Others have (understandably) pointed to the, uh, we'll call it "elasticity" of other characters' survival odds in Remake and told me that's plenty enough evidence to suggest likewise. Yet here's where things get murky, and by murky, I mean murky even within the bounds of Remake's controversial live-or-let-die narrative tomfrakkery. If Wedge lives, how come it's not even remotely hinted at during the ending, which is chock full of "zomg, wait" gotcha moments in that regard? We also hear what are clearly intended to be his last words here, ringing in a way that heralds some of his final dialogue in the original game. To top it all off, and as a genuine fan of Remake I hate to use this as evidence here, but the awkwardness of it is not unlike the writers in other aspects of the game's final chapters. I gotta say, I could see Kitase and Nojima remarking in a couple of years that "they were unaware fans thought otherwise." :P The last possibility is that this was sort of a fakeout fade-to-black for the purposes of leaving the door open for Wedge's return the writers ever decide to pull that card, rather than they already intend to do so. I can easily see this one being the case. Okay, you know, no, wait, there's one more possibility: Wedge does, in fact, die here; but defeating the fate ghosts brings his survival back into the equation. At that point, we're going full Psycho Square Enix Mode, but hey, c'est la Venus. What say you, Era?

You get through what amounts to about a full single-player Final Fantasy that's decent if unspectacular. Afterward, you're treated to what amounts to numerous single-player Final Fantasy titles, and they're mid-high tier at worst (Stormblood) and damn near peerless otherwise. Given that it's ultimately all the same game, I cannot imagine referring to an installment with such long-lasting highs as "terrible."

Thread What are your favorites galactic conflicts in fiction?
"Weep for the future, Na'Toth. Weep for us all...After a thousand years, the Darkness has come again." Arguments might be made that after all the buildup, the war itself lasting a scant 6-7 episodes (depending on one's reckoning) was a bit of a letdown. Indeed, JMS' understandable worries over the fourth season being 's last did somewhat rush things. But what we got was nevertheless riveting, especially when we consider the relatively low budget the show was allotted. It wasn't just a 1990s space show — it was a 1990s space show without the cash. And yet, the CG marries concept art in vivid and memorable ways, and the final battle stole the crown of "most spaceships in one shot" from (Another thread today rightly points out that quantity does not matter nearly as much as quality, but the number of ships on display here makes perfect sense and feels earned.) Most importantly, the writing doesn't let us down. The Army of Light is well-founded through previous seasons. The Minbari Federation, the Narn Regime, and even the League of Non-Aligned Worlds all participating in the last engagement is well worth a cheer; it's the kind of galactic coming-together story I love dearly. "This is Captain John Sheridan. We are here on the authority of a multi-planetary force, that can no longer stand by and watch one of their greatest allies falling into darkness and despair. We are here on behalf of the thousands of civilians murdered under orders from the current administration, who have no one else to speak for them. We are here to place President Clark under arrest, to disband Nightwatch, and return government to the hands of her people. The time to act is now! This is not the voice of treason. These are sons, daughters, whose loyalties have wavered, whose belief in this alliance has forced us to take extraordinary means. For justice, for peace, for the future... ." And here's the other big one. In fact, I like the Earth Alliance Civil War than the Second Shadow War. To be sure, the scale of season four's first engagement is wider. But the ramifications for the rest of galactic society had President Clark and his forces won would nevertheless have been dire. While it may be a touch controversial to say, I prefer the buildup leading to humanity's personal climax over the more fantasy-oriented "light and darkness" of the Shadows and Vorlons. From the moment President Santiago is assassinated, that sense of dread arises. The show capitalizes on this first shocker at believable speeds throughout the course of its second and third seasons, as well as a fair stretch of its fourth. There's also the rather obvious truth to any and all leftists (and even centrists, I reckon) who are fans of ; the parallels to real life in America (and the American impact on other countries) have never felt more real. JMS is reminded of this often on social media and he cannot help but concur. I cheer every time this conflict ends, enthralled on the whole road there. "The Alpha Quadrant seems wracked with chaos – it could use some order...." "Imposing your type of 'order' on the Alpha Quadrant... may prove more difficult than you imagine." I like the new crop of shows just fine, but this is still the biggest damn event to hit the franchise no matter how many artificial intelligence invasion attempts and attempt to convince me otherwise. built this thing up from the second season midway through the fifth, and when it began in earnest it shook the foundations of the universe forever. The machinations of the Dominion, from the subtle to the anything-but, leave viewers increasingly unsettled and desperately hoping that three long-running Alpha Quadrant rival powers — the Federation, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire — can turn over a new leaf before it's too late. One might think the Klingons would be immediately amicable, given the events of and Picard's role as arbiter throughout . One would be mistaken; the Dominion's successful infiltration of Klingon High Command spells near-disaster before the war even begins. Between the six-part sixth-season opener and the ten-part finale stretch, both of which suitably epic and not without sacrifice, there are numerous episodes that highlight the Dominion War in meaningful and emotional ways. The vintage pick is "In the Pale Moonlight," but it's far from alone. And the writers were smart to conclude the war in the first hour of the two-hour series finale; say what you will about the Sisko-versus-Dukat finisher, but they knew we wanted ample closure for the characters who lived through it all. We got it. “Never before have so many come together--from all quarters of the galaxy. But never before have we faced an enemy such as this. The Reapers will show us no mercy. We must give them no quarter. They will terrorize our populations. We must stand fast in the face of that terror. They will advance until our last city falls, but we will not fall. We will prevail. Each of us will be defined by our actions in the coming battle. Stand fast. Stand strong. Stand together. Hackett out.” Yeah, yeah. I know. The original ending sucked and the Extended Cut merely sucked less. Whatever. The Reaper War itself is gold. You'll notice a trend with my choices here: I love a good buildup. From the first mission in the first game of the epic trilogy, this war was inevitable. The adventures of Commander Shepard throughout the first two games encompass many settings and many themes, but at their core is the effort to unite the galaxy before it's too late. I critique the start of the Reaper War — the beginning of — for feeling somewhat rushed. And we all know the finale is rushed. But what exists in-between is of a high enough quality that I love the whole thing, anyway. In particular, Priority: Tuchanka is the franchise's zenith; Priority: Rannoch, while not as good, isn't far behind. What makes the Reaper War work more than anything is its commitment to the characters. , like , thrives on its cast. If you like the characters, you generally like the games. If you don't, you stand a substantially lower shot of enjoying yourself. Thankfully, gives most fan favorites an excellent sendoff. Some of 's are undeniably shortchanged, but the DLC's only crime is its ridiculously bland name. The rest of it gives everyone such a lovely shore leave time to shine that in the final telling, we get something for everyone. And that last space battle? London might have disappointed, but look beyond Earth's atmosphere and it's a chef's kiss. "I came to laugh at you." So, here's the funny part. I'm not even a diehard. It's a good show. It tells its story well and generally just... does what it sets out to do. It also suffers from the usual Tomino issues: the women mostly suck, the protagonist's emotional journey, while strong, lends itself to some bitterly bad scenes; the characters wax quasi-poetic philosophy at each other for long stretches of time. Often, they're even saying the same thing, over and over again, just in case you didn't understand before. None of that matters to me in the end. The Gryps War is, well, pardon the terrible pun. It's gripping. It's a grey zone in a franchise that prides itself on recurring grey zones. Sure, the One Year War gets most of the special treatment. We keep getting different perspectives. We got . Some of that stuff is fun. Some of it isn't. But whatever. The Gryps War is the real breadwinner in my mind. The hints from that maybe the Federation isn't all it's cracked up to be, they all blossom into ugliness in The Earth Federation has let loose the extremist force known as the Titans, and all of a sudden, even the Zeon Remnants don't seem so terrible. It forces viewers to take a deeper look at the better things Tomino has done, loath as I am to praise him; war is hell, he says, again and again, and the Gryps War says it best. The heroes are caught in the crossfire, trying to preserve decency in a solar system gone mad, and the conclusion makes the protagonist's at-times insufferable psychological travels feel worth it.

There's something about low-budget sci-fi sets that can be rather off-putting. You just know you're supposed to be looking at something more grandiose. Even three-decades-old videogames can find ways to visualize the grandiose, if only through still imagery in-between gameplay segments. Obviously, that approach... doesn't work on TV! For what it's worth?

Thread The Battle of Exegol in SW Episode 9 is fricking outrageous
Outside of The Expanse, the rule of cool in the visual space adventure/opera medium is now “fit as many ships on screen as you conceivably can.” This was the case with the Star Trek: Picard season finale as well. I don’t recall the number offhand but there was something like 65 or so Romulan warships... just because there could be. Don’t get me wrong. Trek’s done this before... sort of. Never mind Discovery, even — the 1990s fare went there three times, to my recollection. But on all three occasions, it felt earned. Both of the biggest battles in DS9’s Dominion War had hundreds of ships, but they were essentially everything that every faction had at their disposal. It worked. Enterprise kind of did this with the conclusion of its Xindi arc, too, but even then the writers abided by the relative lack of ships that could feasibly participate. Whether that was budgetary or not, it was, you know, less silly. I genuinely like Star Trek: Picard, exceptionally spotty month episode notwithstanding. But yeah. That space battle was a bit like Star Trek’s Sith Fleet.

I can't speak very well about the financials. Maybe somewhat better than most, but not enough to chime in when there are people here who know them inside and out. I'm not one of those people. Qualitatively, and anecdotally, I've been far more pleased with the state of JRPGs since about 2016 or so. Things have come around in a big way. Gone are the days of one title a year calling my name. Admittedly, this is perhaps exacerbated by my modest ties with the industry now. But that's a far more recent situation. Besides, continuing the anecdotal lens here, I have friends almost entirely detached from daily internet life who are expressing similar sentiments. Thread Television shows you feel reasonably confident will never be "revived"
With all the TV revivals going on these past few years, it's easy to dismiss the practice as being so prolific, anything can be revived. But there are thousands of shows that are either so far off the radar that even TV execs recognize the fruitlessness or they're too entangled in studio red tape to ever find a continuation. We could fill this thread with stuff that lasted three episodes before it was pulled off the airwaves, but I'd rather center on those shows that at least a fair number of us have encountered that likely still do not stand a shot. I'll start with these three. CBS Sitcom (2000-2006) This unfunny mess had everything going against it, including critical panning and a 2004 cancellation that was reversed when the producers to CBS' satisfaction. Everyone I knew found it so bland they couldn't fathom its six-season longevity. It was the bad gift that kept on giving. Yet clearly, someone was watching. Enough people tuned in every week to make it a sleeper hit, which is sometimes enough to warrant studio interest in a revival. But I will literally eat a raspberry if this thing ever comes back. I hate raspberries. And no, this thread is about "wait, OP hates raspberries?" now, damn it. PTEN Action/Crime Drama (1993-1997) By contrast, was... well, it was better than Not the highest of compliments. Kid me liked it, though! My grandmother was definitely checking it out every week for David Carradine, and you know, in hindsight, who wouldn't? Chris Potter's "1990s JRPG protagonist living the life of a procedural TV cop" was nowhere near as interesting. The show is dated in ways that the original somehow isn't, and while isn't some perennial zeitgeist or anything, I definitely see it talked about way more than its sequel series. This one was canned after four seasons at the start of 1997 when PTEN -- more cult-classically notable for being the home of for 80% of its run -- came to a crash and ceased all broadcasts. Really don't see anyone lobbying for more, especially with Carradine long gone. NBC (1993-1996) "Wait, damn you! I actually watched this show! Why don't I recognize half the people in your photo? Where the hell is Roy Scheider?" If you're in the market for a relatively short-lived show with not only a revolving door of actors and actresses but the most lunatic tonal shifts I've ever seen, may be right up your canal. Originally launched as a proudly educational science fiction series about a near-future centered on ocean exploration, felt like the underseas answer to that no ever really asked in the first place. But that was OK, because it had the big bucks and interests of Steven Spielberg, and it started off with decent enough ratings to keep afloat. In the first season, the crew kept running into lost treasure troves, ancient mysteries unraveled, evil submarine pirates, you know, the works. But as Wikipedia states, it all had a believable air about it: "The first season's storylines primarily dealt with plausible oceanographic research, environmental issues, political machinations of the world and the interpersonal relationships of the crew." After cast spats led to numerous departures and the show was relocated from Los Angeles to Orlando, the network pushed for a less realistic tone for the second season, with episodes centered on killer plants, time travel, a giant fire-breathing worm, an ancient demon... yeah, this was no longer sophisticated. It concluded with the crew being teleported across the cosmos and forced into a civil war. Mark Hamill was there, I kid you not. The third season, which never even finished being made before NBC finally said no, was a hot mess with even further cast departures, a literal show renaming (), a military dystopia, and Michael Ironside. Well, at least that happened. I'll just leave this here:Apparently, I had a lot to say about But the point is the same across the board; this show ain't coming back, either. What are some of your picks, Era?

My thoughts on big-screen Trek have been few and far between since the franchise returned to its rightful place on TV. Either they're happy with the modern shows or they aren't, but no one seems to be shouting from rooftops that the way to fix anything is via movie theaters. Thread Which Final Fantasy has your favourite magic system?
In terms of the usefulness and splendor of spells, FFXII: The Zodiac Age ranks supreme. There’s a decent degree of depth involved and it’s fun strategizing for magic-heavy optional battles. Worst here is probably VIII, for the same reason many others have mentioned. On the other hand, the systems built around the gaining and strengthening of magic peak in FFVII. Spells are bought or found, which is part of what makes games like FFV and FFXII cool, and then they level up over time. It’s stylish (materia orbs are visually satisfying) and kind of addictive. I hate FFVI’s, ngl. On paper, the notion of permanent stat growth at level-ups courtesy of equipped Esper is rather cool. In my personal experience, it’s just a lot of frustration. I’d like it more if I didn’t feel the urge to time everything at least passably well so that I don’t wind up with suboptimal character builds I didn’t intend to create. This urge leads me to micromanage the heck out of my party as their levels climb. FFVI’s battle system isn’t engaging enough to support that menial dryness. (I know my critiques re: FFVI’s system are entirely subjective.)

I just reached Kugane today in FFXIV and I think it's officially pushed Rabanastre down to fourth place for me. Still a great city but Midgar (VII Remake) and Ishgard are even better IMO. One thing Final Fantasy hasn't struggled with in recent years is settlements -- and that's something I wouldn't have dared predict would be the case back during the PS3 era.

Wow uh, I thought maybe I'd resolved the issue with my TCL television tonight and no... no, I did not. The whole "flashes off and the screen goes white for a second" thing. Not only did that happen a couple of times but this one time the TV just gave up entirely, went to an old-school snowy screen thing, and the Xbox Series X automatically shut down in response. Everything's still working fine otherwise but goddamn. I am definitely not watching anything via streaming services on the poor console anytime soon.

Only issue I've had thus far is that the console started going to a black screen for two seconds or so every... 4-5 minutes? This started when Skyrim attempted to load HDR automatically; my TCL television has that "quasi-HDR" thing but it isn't the real, HDR10, deal. I disabled the console's setting that lets apps try to enter HDR mode automatically and that seems to have fixed it.

Thread LTTP: Morrowind is both atmospheric and bewildering
My Elder Scrolls history is short and sweet. When I was 15 years old, I played an hour of Morrowind are my mom's boyfriend's house. That hour stuck with me. I didn't touch the game again until three days ago, but I never forgot my time wandering near Seyda Neen. There was something so different from what I usually played and so vividly memorable. I played Oblivion even less -- approximately 20-30 minutes on a display unit at a GameStop. Like many players, it wasn't until Skyrim that I spent any real length of time in Tamriel. And, like many players are equally quick to declare, I never even finished the story. E3 2018 came and went, and the excitement for The Elder Scrolls 6's announcement prompted me to go back to the pseudo-beginning. Back to Morrowind, to relive that lone and lovely hour and -- perhaps -- go further. I'd watched the recent documentary The History of Bethesda Game Studios and remembered why despite relatively little personal history with their games BGS still impresses me. I asked for help finding lore videos and guides so I could finally, finally make some sense out of Nirn. And then I downloaded Morrowind and got to work. My character is Nora Navarre, an adventuring Imperial who ran afoul of the law and got stuck on a boat. She doesn't know why, and neither do I, but the Emperor himself has pardoned her and sent her to Vvardenfell. Immediately I felt transported back to my youth, to when this opening sequence and revolutionary openness first stunned me. I recall contextual clues and Fargoth's voice and the glorious silt strider as if it were all just yesterday. I suppose it helps that Morrowind is beloved, and thus spoken-of often on the internet. I've joined the Blades, working for a shirtless fellow with an obvious drug problem. I've joined the Fighter's Guild, clearing out an outlaw orc's house and making it my own. I keep getting attacked by assassins, and I don't know why, but their armor fetches a pretty penny so shine on, you crazy bad guys. I'm blown away and confounded by the number of gameplay systems at hand. I see items like greef and I have no idea what I'm looking at. I keep getting told it's my lucky day and I don't understand why. I love it. I grew up on JRPG stock. BioWare got me into WRPGs, but mostly I've stuck to BioWare. I'm taking my first measured steps into truly exploring Tamriel, and these giant trees look like mushrooms and it's like video game crack. Even the feeling of going down the Wikipedia rabbit hole every time I talk to somebody -- underlined clickable words ahoy! -- feels new and vibrant to me. If anyone here happens to be a Morrowind vet (oh come on, half of you probably are) and has any tips for a first-timer, I'm all ears. In the meantime, I'll keep reading every book voraciously and devouring the gorgeous world-building and alien environs of Vvardenfell. Cool game, yo.

I think this is a rare case where there could be an appreciable uptick in sales for a remaster courtesy of a years-out official sequel reveal. Next March, ME3 will turn nine years old. People still struggle to get two pages into any Mass Effect thread without bemoaning the endings. This short reveal trailer tells us specifically from that trilogy will move forward in way, even if (apart from Liara) we don't know the details. There's a not-so-subtle implication here that Shepard could show up, either in the flesh or in remodeled flesh (ha) or as an AI or who-the-hell-knows. It's the sort of stuff that I can say without irony is the one thing that'll bring some folks back. And if they're coming back anyway, they may as well replay the trilogy.

I trust that Dragon Age remains in solid hands. I said this back when Mike Laidlaw left and I still mean it today. Despite the infamy of DA4's development the minds at the helm are truly talented and I hope that shines through in the final telling. But between Laidlaw and Darrah departing (and David Gaider if we're going farther back), there's something damn sad about it all. As for Casey Hudson, he's a nice dude but I'm not as fussed. The one thing I'll note is that (and this is 100% conjecture) I'd be less concerned over Mark leaving the company if he didn't do so simultaneously with Casey. Maybe there's nothing to that. Maybe they simply mulled it over together (or even separately) and this was the best time for them to leave. But to me, it feels like Mark Darrah has positioned folks to take over more smoothly whereas (from what limited public information we have via those blog posts) I don't know that the same can be said for Hudson. Which makes the synchronicity here potentially troubling.

A few more things. But the Xbox Series X is certainly on my 2021 queue. Probably not until around year's end? It's where I'll want to be for things like Dragon Age going forward since Origins and 2 are both on Game Pass alongside Inquisition. If that’s the case, this is a fine line, tightrope sort of play. It’s also possible I’m completely off-base, or what we’re seeing here won’t even prove to be suitably accurate in the final telling. Regional climate change likely played a substantial part in the collapse. Once-verdant fields would suffer droughts, leading to massive human displacement. Those displaced would need fresh resources to survive. Some of them likely became "the Sea Peoples." The Sea Peoples, as scholars such as Eric H. Cline have posited, were less "cause" and more "effect." Of course, this is just one of several key angles. I recently read this book and recommend it: I disagree with Cline here and there. I think his structure could have been improved with a more cutthroat kind of editor. Alright, so a few episodes into this I managed to convince my anime-watching friend who watched the XY seasons with me to finally get started on Sun/Moon. Since the Sun/Moon thread is understandably long in the tooth now, I thought I'd offer some thoughts on the first 20 or so episodes here. I love the cast! It's still taking me time to say goodbye to XY's, and I don't know if there's anyone here I like more than Serena, but the expanded number of characters is really helping. We've got several personalities and that's great. Some of the cast's goals (at least at this point) seem a little lol; Lana apparently wants to make bigger and bigger bubbles. Hey, got for her, I guess. But I've already witnessed a fair degree of character development for a few of these folks. I'm glad that that's continuing because I'm not sure offhand where XY ranks for anime fans but it's my highest bar right now and a big part of that was thanks to the character arcs. Like many, I wasn't thrilled with the art style at first, but the expressiveness and detailed animations are more than making up for it. I also love how Team Rocket has been utilized up to this point. Sparingly, yet meaningfully. I haven't tired of the Bewear shtick either. Litten is wonderful and I'm psyched to see more of him later. All in all, I'm enjoying this a great deal! I'm an easy please, admittedly. I didn't ever zone out in the slower parts of Johto or Hoenn. This has probably been asked several times already but I’m super busy this week so. <_< Are Mustard’s references to being ready for “when the time comes” teases for Crown Tundra? I can’t imagine they mean anything else considering everything sans Crown Tundra can be done prior to one’s arrival at the Isle of Armor. I guess there’s probably no way to know for certain right now, but hey, maaaaybe a developer answered the inquiry.

Thread So, uh... Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
What do people think about it? How many folks here have actually played it? It seems to slip under-the-radar in Final Fantasy discussions even more than stuff like Lightning Returns. The DS had a couple of Ivalice Alliance titles that brought back FFXII characters in canonical continuations (although in FFTA's case, it's just Vaan and Penelo) but even among FFXII diehards, I seldom see much chatter about those games. Especially Revenant Wings. Personally, I like it for what it is! I'm not a big fan of the art style and it isn't what I'd call an especially ambitious game. But the RTS-esque stuff is, oddly, the RTS I've ever gotten into? Probably just a matter of Final Fantasy flavoring doing its job on me or something, whatever. It's almost definitely my favorite game directed by Motomu Toriyama (as in, 100% Toriyama), though the bar isn't all that high for me in that regard. I don't know. It's a weird one. As someone who loves Ivalice, I grabbed it on release day and never looked back. But the amount of chatter I've heard about Revenant Wings... well... that would imply there any.

It almost certainly will. Season 4 was Book 4 (fittingly). Book 4 has always been a bit of a black sheep. Book 5, on the other hand, is really damned good.I'd say give it a shot. But then, I'm biased. I adore it. :P

I'm personally quite pleased it's moving to a (mostly) weekly schedule. It's better for fandom "health" and it makes things feel more like an event in my household.

That's pretty badass. Now, if you don't like all those shows, obviously this isn't as big a deal for you. Of the three, I understand that is easily the most divisive of the bunch. Here on Era, like everywhere else on the internet, there have been arguments galore over the quality of that show. Whatever! I like it. But regardless, it's just a cool time for fans of this sort of setting. Do y'all remember this time last decade? The well was drying up big-time. The streaming world has changed all that. Personally, I'm most excited for but whew -- weekly episode drops for all three is just heavenly. It reminds me of the old days, with and airing every week. Or, years later, the time when and were one great, big, epic three-hour block on The Sci-Fi Channel. (Heck, intersected with that time period, too.) Are you a fan of this sort of setting? Are you looking forward to the returns of any of these shows? It just sort of reminds me of something my man John Crichton once said in "Wait for the wheel." The wheel has spun, and we're back, space fans.

I might have liked more if not for the insufferable subplot with those two kids. I worked at an AMC in Summer 2018 and saw big sections of several times over and it certainly seemed like the disaster folks say it was. The first was a 6/10; if I saw the full sequel, I'd likely hover around a 3/10. Not interested in this despite being a huge fan of the original as a kid I sincerely hope people love it. I mean, why not, right?

It appears I was not clear. I was stating that four years without any new Pokémon game in the main series, as in, no remakes, no Let’s Go, nothing, strikes me as hard to believe. I was not saying a four-year gap between is hard to believe. Quite the contrary, in fact. The member whom I was replying to was suggesting that Sword/Shield DLCs take the place of any releases whatsoever until Gen 9.

I hear ya, though as folks further down pointed out, Whitta is helping pen Athia’s story. I do think that will help. I just don’t want to tell myself the length of the critical path will be all that impressive until proven otherwise, if that makes sense. I don’t want to trick myself into hoping it’s an epic if it might not be. It’s admittedly a somewhat silly thing to be thinking about at this stage. And regardless, the game is gonna be a real stunner!

I'm sure it's going to be breathtaking. But with a visual target like that, I'm going to keep my expectations super-low in terms of story delivery. Updating ME1 in some fashion is excellent news in my book. It has the best overall narrative but its mediocre combat has kept some of my friends from getting through the trilogy for far too long. I don't care about ME3 multiplayer's exclusion at all on a personal level. Zero interest there. But I do feel for those who were excited for its return.

My curiosity here, and maybe it's been addressed already, is whether or not games like Fallout 4 and Final Fantasy XV will include their DLCs. I can't imagine ever wanting to go back to FFXV without all those patches and DLCs, for example, and in Fallout 4's case, Far Harbor is like half the reason I'd ever replay it. I'm guessing it's a no on these two fronts but holding out hope.

When you say playable, do you mean you can only control one member of a party, or do you mean there's no party to speak of? If the former, I don't much care. FFXV launched that way and I was fine with it. If the latter, that's a huge hit to my enthusiasm.

100% this. Look, I never enjoyed MMOs before FFXIV and I know a lot of us didn’t. The team behind this game is so talented that I overcame that hurdle because hot damn it’s a good Final Fantasy. But even for those of y’all who can’t get past the MMO aspect, I get it, you don’t have to play the game; just please trust me: they are the best team at Square overall. Incredibly talented and their passion and reverence for the franchise shines through constantly even as they pave bold new roads for what it means to be an FF.
