Thread DCEU Era |OT2| Aquaman's Outrageous Adventure!
The good thing about the DCEU now I guess is WB has found 3 ways that work and one that doesn't (or needs a guiding hand for) Wonder Woman and Aquaman are similar movies, but also not. Wonder Woman is a bit more earnest in her approach like I said when it came out (and Jenkins has said) it shares roots with Donner's Superman (and to a similar degree Raimi's Spider-man) in that it wears its heart on its sleeve via the hero being emotionally available for any and everything in the movie. This doesn't work for all heroes (see Batman) but it's a good method (and personally my favorite type) Then there's Aquaman which leans more into the spectacle of comic books. Big colorful costumes, imaginative worlds, a host of powers and honestly so much source material that you can afford to go big from the jump. To be honest, before Aquaman and Infinity War, I was all in the camp of slowly easing folks into these worlds, but clearly if your movie believes in what it's selling the audience will go along with it. So I really really really need them to go full blast with the Green Lantern flick. Finally, there's Suicide Squad. I will be honest with you, I have no idea what the movie does right, but it spoke to people and it has a loyal following. Much like Venom, I don't know how you replicate it, but there's something there. And we know the one method that didn't quite work for them so we won't go through that again.

I think you're arguing two related, but different points. What he is saying, is that one way or another DC has kept their characters out there via video games, animated movies, TV shows and the likes. And I know a few of them aired in different countries, Injustice is a fairly global success and the likes. That however doesn't mean that the character resonated with others outside of the country, but you would be hard pressed to find a time in the last 40 some odd years where there wasn't a few projects with DC characters out there. Marvel for its part, kind of doesn't have much of a presence in the 80s or the back half of the 90s until the Spider-man/X-men movies took off in early 2000s.

WB is just gonna keep adding zeroes until its worth his time. But I think he'll get something like Nolan had with Batman. Given all the time he wants, can even work on projects they'll fund in-between to keep him happy. So if he wants to do Saw Returns and come back to Aquaman in 2022 they'll be fine. I do wonder if they wanna wait that long. I know a lot has been made of their failures, but they've also been not as great at capitalizing on successes. We're going at least 4 years without a Suicide Squad sequel (though we get a Harley spin-off), and 3 years between Wonder Woman movies.

Not saying it's a majority of the fans, but it can be the most vocal and prominent ones at times.

I saw the movie, I'm a fan but I can see a lot of the other view points on why people didn't dig it as much. And also wanna note that Wan makes a point that is often overlooked, and I know a problem in the comic book industry, don't tag folks if you're gonna slam their work. I like this thread but feels needed some rules Like what are we defining as side characters because some of them are like leads on ensemble TV shows, yes that has a center but also if you're around for 5-10 seasons.... And others are like blink and you miss it cameos, which would bolster a lot of shows that have procedural designs. And then fame, are we defining it by box-office, general reception/movie star power or awards or a combination of everything

To be fair, most thought it would be dominated by Mary Poppins In hindsight, it made little sense But I will be honest and say never expected Aquaman to do this. My best wishes for it were to cross 500 million, a safe amount to see life left in DCEU Not only is there life, but I really do think helps destroy this narrative that general audiences apparently hold a grudge in connected universes

Yeah should correct myself, Aquaman is tied for 4th with Infinity War Because Infinity War is such a hard thing to really wrap my head around. As a movie, it's actually one of the weakest of the year. So many different threads it needs to manage... and it doesn't always work, characters disappear for large chunks of the movie and the ending while emotional for some, rang hallow... it's like the death of Superman in BvS, you know it won't stick.

I will say this much, I am glad it happens. I said similar stuff around the Dark Universe, but it really does suck to do all this prep and get some people invested then throw it all away if one movie doesn't land how you wanted. I don't like The Mummy 2017, but what they needed to do was re-evaluate their money spend on each film and not just ditching the universe wholesale.

I won't defend their decision, but also Batman and Superman just came with a lot of baggage where there are some fairly iconic versions of the characters drilled into the mainstream. So I'll give them some props for at least trying something new/different with the characters. And I am a bit bias as someone who enjoys MoS/BvS, but clearly it isn't what the mainstream audience wanted out of those properties, and I hope they know that now. Leave the experimenting to the DC Universe movies... if that ever becomes a thing.

I kind of get what you mean But at the same time, I guess that's the point? Like if I were to view season 1, it has a ton of great episodes, but if someone asked me to describe the overall arc of the season... it feels more like a very prolonged issue 1 of a comic where it's introducing the players and giving us some info on them, but there isn't actually like a central plot yet. A ton of threads.

I feel like I'm missing a running joke with Aquaman's runtime... I guess it may feel long to some But it's 5 mins longer than Black Panther. 10 minutes shorter than Infinity War Not saying it's going to do those numbers, but that didn't hurt repeat business.Yeah it's looking like we all may have crowned it king of the box-office off it being a Disney film during the holiday season and having a brand attached to it. Like the trailers never did anything for me, but I assumed it was because never seen the original so was missing what made it magic and special... but it seems like it just kind of exists. Also from what I hear, it doesn't have that one big earworm of a song.

Oh whoops That was a draft wrote earlier that didn't intend to post (because realized actually like 9 mins longer and 5 mins shorter) and I get that for some. Just odd read lots of reviews mentioning the runtime, but like there's been longer movies this year. I guess never felt it. Or think 2 hour 20 is fine for most cape movies.

Like only one of my co-workers has mentioned it recently, and that was more in the light of... why. But if it is as magical as some are saying word of mouth shall increase. And still don't completely understand your logic It's somehow worse to get more episodes of Young Justice up front then it would be to spread it out over half a year?

I wanted to reply earlier, but was on the street. I said, I believe after BvS, that we would never really see a road map for DC movies again, and that seems truer by the day. If you don't have a road map, people can't say changed plans and stuff like that. I get the frustration people have with not knowing the next 10 movies in production and not having directors, writers and cast attached to them all. But it seems like the veil of Hollywood movie making has been ripped off, and no one prepared folks for that knowledge. Like there were like half a dozen Batman projects between Batman and Robin and Batman Begins, but the internet wasn't in such a big huff with all the stuff back then. Hell Justice League Mortals is more recent, and even that didn't have the spotlight shun on it the way announcements are now. Deadline mentions in PASSING that WB is talking about a Zatanna movie, and now that's making headlines on websites. So if it doesn't follow through, the narrative continues that WB doesn't know what they are doing.

I can't speak for Geoff, but from what I gathered/think It was moved to Thurs (it use to be Fridays) because it was the same weekend as PlayStation Experience, and while Anaheim isn't too far, I imagine a lot of folks inside the industry weren't keen on doing this, the aftershow and then rushing in LA traffic to Anaheim for the next morning so built in a travel day buffer. It is still relatively early in the day in California and if they wanna make it an awards show that sells tickets to general audience need to do it after work hours to make sure people show up. They could move it to the East Coast, but most of our gaming companies are situated in the West. They could do weekends, and maybe what they'll try next year, but for the most part people try to be "primetime" and don't think anyone wants to like broadcast at 2pm. We shall see.

Like it just becomes jarring over time, but still a great film. 34. Halloween h20 (N) - I thought had seen this, but guess only seen the very opening and the part with the dumbwaiter. This movie... I get why some people love it, I get why some people hate it. Like it's a fun slasher, but it does kind of turn Michael into a weird character at times. The scene when just waving his knife around at Josh Hartnett and girlfriend is more comical than anything. 35. Stage Fright (N) - This is different than Stage Fright 30. I mean aside from sharing names very different movies. This one is a musical slasher. It's not necessarily a great marriage, but the villain/killer totally makes this movie. Metal as hell and it is just so great when they are on-screen... before the big reveal.[/QUOTE]

Stage Fright (N) - Found this on vudu, since planning on watching a different horror movie called Stage Fright (not related) thought would give it a spin. This is an oddly structured and paced slasher film for sure. Like the main characters all discover the first body fairly early on in the movie and the cops are called and even huddled together are able to slowly be picked off one by one. Then most of them are killed with like an 30 minutes or so left in the movie so it becomes an odd game of cat and mouse. I did enjoy it if nothing else for just throwing conventional structure out the window. 31. Creep 2 (N) - I really like the first Creep movie and thought would be impossible to do a sequel when everyone knows the premise, but they had some tricks up their sleeves and really does leave you second-guessing everything in the movie. A worthy follow-up. 32. Friday the 13th (R) - I mean I've seen this countless times, still holds up. So now that surpassed 31, gonna try to get to 31 new movies (though fairly close in that regard as well)

A somehwat predictable ending that has enough of a twist to leave on a high. 29. I assume some of this... most of this is out of their control. Like on their app doing stuff like Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol. But when partnering with another company, they probably want a brand and Batman is probably a lot cheaper than Superman. I mean even with the success of the MCU, there's only what 2 Marvel shows that air on actual TV? (Not counting the X-Men stuff since that's Fox) I mean... I really wish there was a second episode to get a better feel for it all. Like for all the trailer talk and reviews, didn't find it all that edgy or grimdark or violent as people claim. Like this seems like a Dick who trained under Arkham series Batman. We get teases of the story, but the characters spend so little time together we don't get the flow or chemistry of the series. I guess I'll see next week. Right now not sure what to make of it.

The Funhouse Massacre (N) - One of those movies I just picked because needed something to watch before bed that didn't have to pay attention to, but honestly ended up being surprised by this. One of those films that finds the happy medium between a silly premise (a bunch of escaped psychopaths start up a Halloween carnival in order to lure victims to them) and execution (that is in on the joke while taking it serious) that makes for an enjoyable ride. It does start to lose steam once all the characters are in on it, but it was a fun movie for the majority. And some pretty vicious and funny kills.

Fun fact, I started watching the Prom Night remake and like 20 minutes in, I feel like I've seen this movie before was able to search and find that I had seen the movie before. Just that forgettable. 11. The Windmill (N) - On Netflix. I really like this movie. It's more of a psychological slasher than a pure blood and guts one, but it works. The killer design isn't anything special, but gruesome enough to be unique, the characters are mostly likable and waiting for the shoe to drop. And unlike other movies it doesn't completely fall apart at the end.
