Thread New "Dragon Ball Super" movie to be announced for 2022
People are expecting a new version of an old character because that's what the Broly movie did. And Cooler is the 2nd most popular movie villain, so if they were going to pick another one, he seems like the obvious choice. I think Heroes picking Cooler and giving him a golden form of his own shows Toriyama had no interest in using the character though.

Thread New "Dragon Ball Super" movie to be announced for 2022
I wonder if the new visual aesthetics mean we could finally get space battles in Dragonball, or if that will remain forbidden. They could go crazy with the visuals if they were willing to make the characters get kicked out of planets, fly between planets, blow them up alongside moons and such all in the middle of a fight rather than keeping them grounded to inhabited planets that can't be blown up outside of dramatic moments and space in general being forbidden.

I can't find the link right now, but I'm pretty sure I've read that was pretty much on purpose. They thought they had given Narukami too much personality in spin-off appearances and wanted to avoid that with Joker. It's why even in several spin-off appearances he has continued to be a silent protagonist and when he does speak, like in the anime, he has a very bland and inoffensive personality, clashing really hard with his visual characterization.

Thread Kid Goku is a better character than addult goku
That didn't happen in the manga, although I do remember the anime added two segments of episodes focused on his "training trips", so it might be from there. I can barely remember those episodes though. Still, he always liked fighting, but that's different from the characterization he receives later when Toriyama decided it was a racial trait rather than just standard enjoyment of battles. Like I said, before the 23rd Budokai, he never spared someone while thinking about how it's because he wanted to face them again in the future like he does to Piccolo and Vegeta.

Thread Kid Goku is a better character than addult goku
It's clear Toriyama only thought about the whole "obsessed with fighting" part of Goku by the 23rd Budokai right before he went ahead with the alien storyline. That's the first time you get him thinking about sparing someone in order to have a chance to fight against them again (even if he had other excuses that he gave the characters and kept that to himself, unlike later when he outright said it). Previously he just killed villains.

My wording there was bad before I edited it. I meant the run, not that specific issue. Still, by 81 you have the issue where Magneto almost kills Kitty and after that he basically didn't appear as a villain until the 90s.

Oddly enough, Magneto became mostly an allied character by the time of the run that starts with Giant Size X-Men #1, which introduced many iconic characters to the team like Wolverine and Storm, as well as Magneto's concentration camp survivor backstory. So, during the 80s, they barely actually clashed as enemies. Magneto returned to being an antagonist by the 90s though, so they actually pulled the adamantium removal fairly quickly once Magneto was a constant enemy again.

I generally like them, although it depends on what's the "normal" ending. Some games with a true ending basically turn the first ending you get into an automatic bad ending, and I really don't care for that. Well, unless it's one of those games where it immediately places the player back near the ending and you can just get whatever you're missing for the actual true ending.

Thread Sometimes I semi-wish for Wonder Woman to be as strong as Superman (open spoilers for The Boys/Invincible TV series)
Historically, Wonder Woman was nowhere near Superman. She had enhanced abilities, including super speed and strength, but nowhere close to Superman's planetary level. This all changed in the 80s reboot though, when they started pushing her much closer to Superman - it was even when she first was portrayed as being able to fly too to sell the idea of her standing on his level. But, yes, in spite of that, due to her long history of being portrayed as much weaker, she is generally still portrayed one level bellow him in both comics and adaptations. I think part of the issue though, aside from influences of her old portrayal, is that unlike Superman she has no real weakness. Superman has Kryptonite, Red Sun radiation or lack of yellow sun light to depower him, in addition to magic, although this last one depends on the writer. There are several Superman vs Wonder Woman match ups where Wonder Woman easily beats him due to her abilities being considered magic. Injustice is all about a rogue Superman taking over, and yet it only really happens because other heroes stay by his side or even push him forward. When he faced Wonder Woman in the comic prequel he easily lost.

I feel like this is mostly an issue with Toei's script writers wanting to play down Goku's selfish actions, so they avoid focusing on them. Look at his speech about disliking the Super Saiyan God power up because it wasn't something he could achieve by himself in the BoGs movie, which had Toriyama in direct talks with the script writer to the point of completely changing the movie's plot, that then gets completely removed from the BoGs anime arc, in spite of the tv arc being longer. After several staff changes, it felt like anime Tournament of Power Goku did get more focus on those elements though.

Sailor Moon in Japan became one of those series tied to a specific fanbase/generation, since Pretty Cure, which is completely Toei-owned and can be rebooted every year, took over as the standard image of magical girls. Even Pretty Cure doesn't have much luck in games since modern Bandai doesn't seem to think the action image actually helps selling to girls. You can see a big difference in commercials for series or movies (handled by Toei) compared to the commercials for merchandising (Bandai) with the later never including action in spite of the tv shows and movies having no issue advertising that. The games are under merchandising and are treated in a similar way.

Thread What JRPG are you playing right now?
The Keroro anime/manga has many references and also some meta-humor, so the game was kind of keeping its spirit in that sense, although the writing here isn't as good as the actual series. There's even an episode that basically executed this game's premise years before it (the cast diving into a RPG, although in the episode it was mostly a not-Dragon Quest, aside from no turn-based battles. The episode also ended teasing them diving into Persona 3 afterwards, but the story ended there). As someone who actually knows Keroro, I was disappointed by the whole generic JRPG set up though, rather than just making a modern day JRPG. Some Keroro characters were reimagined as npcs/helpers in the game world, but it had issues like the super generic bestiary rather than using aliens and other monsters from the series as enemies, and only the actual main cast appears/gets counterparts.

Thread Are you satisfied with the DLC characters for Smash so far?
I liked Joker's addition, and he is fun to play as a character, but I don't really care for how he was implemented. It just doesn't feel like how he should handle, especially with Strikers on the side too now for another take on real time gameplay with Joker, or Persona 4 Arena for other Persona characters in a fighting game. I really wanted Hero and his implementation with the 4 alts and spell menu was great. I used to love Banjo's games, but it's one of those franchises I never returned to. His implementation in Smash was... pretty standard? He isn't bad or anything but he's there. I really enjoy playing as Terry, and love the SNK-related BGMs brought with him (like the Metal Slug ones) Byleth... I love Fire Emblem, but I really think their implementation in Smash is weak most of the time, and Byleth just continues that trend. A "weapon specialist" Marth was fine when the only other swordsman was Link who had a bunch of gimmick weapons, but I think nowadays that's too restricting considering Smash's overall roster. Min-Min was fun and perfect implementation of ARMs' gameplay in Smash. Sephiroth was great. Steve... I actually love all the gimmicks implemented, but I can't get used to his basic attacks/gameplay. It feels odd. Also didn't care for him being a straight model rip without any attempt at style cohesion, unlike all other Smash characters. I wanted more Xenoblade and really loved we basically got two characters at once with Pyra and Mythra. Overall, I have a positive impression of the pass, although with some complaints.

Actually, in the very beginning of the series those elements popped up in the main "musou/story" modes themselves. There was a rather heavy morale mechanic in earlier Dynasty Warriors games that pushed the player to run around the battlefield rescuing their troops to keep it high. That did end up sidelined though, with the focus going to advancing to triggering the next next cutscene event. Samurai Warriors kept a side-objective system going through all of its main entries (many of them involving timed missions too), but it could be ignored if you didn't care about getting ultimate weapons.

Thread Former Brazilian president Lula convictions annulled, political rights restored, may run in 2022 for president
Lula was charged for corruption - supposedly accepting favors from companies, like an expensive beachfront apartment, in exchange for securing government contracts for them. The issue from the start is that all these accusations were very vague. For example this apartment wasn't legally in his name and he never even actually moved there, but it was ruled he had to go there eventually (in spite of it being left empty for years) and was secretly its owner in spite of never acting as such. The other cases are similar in how much they needed to stretch things to get close to him and how generally they weren't tied to specific acts from Lula as president (In another case, he often visited to a certain rural propriety in Atibaia, and it was eventually ruled that he was acting as its actual owner, due to his presence there, in order to tie some construction work done there directly as favors to him). However, this was done by judges and prosecution tied to the "Operation Lava Jato" which enjoyed great popularity at the time as fighting corruption and so they seemed to be able to make everything stick. Their narrative was further reinforced when appeal courts kept or even increased the sentences. However, as it turns out, there was a huge leak of cell phone messages related to the people involved there. Prosecution and judges were working together from the start and every trial was basically just a public show where nothing the defense could do or ague would change their results. They even explicitly talked about not going after certain people who were considered their "allies". This decision actually avoided going into any of that though, it just stated that the trials started in the wrong location, so all trials have to be restarted from zero elsewhere.

It's different from Saikoroshi not getting acknowledged by the script at all.The epilogue itself doesn't need to be erased, it could just happen in the "future" from now. That's kind of what I'm saying though. I think Rika is getting called cat because there's no separate Bernkastel character yet at this point.

Although Gou itself has questioned her earlier victory, since it had that scene where Rika questioned what was even the point of surviving through 1983, even with a new power now, since it turned out she could just be thrown back again.

Well, this Satoko is probably a different character altogether too. We haven't gotten there yet, but the fact that when Looper Satoko's identity was revealed we were left with a large smirk while she aimed a gun at her friends strongly points to her being very different from the actual 10 years old Satoko. The point of Satoko's entire arc in Gou is probably going to come down to that in her quest to punish or fix Rika after learning the truth about her, Satoko basically became exactly like her (well, even worse), wearing a mask of her old self, while being basically someone else entirely underneath that. And in a bizarre way maybe they will actually form some kind of bond due to that once everything gets revealed.

Also, thinking about it, "Anomalous Spinal Cord Specimen" also could be straight up about Higurashi. They made the Hinamizawa virus treatment from Rika's spinal cord fluid and Satoko also was analyzed due to her anomalous behavior with the syndrome.I think they're basically splitting the Rika from these new loops from the original one. The real Rika is just continuing her life in the original Matsuri fragment (who knows what happened with Satoko, maybe she just vanished or time stopped until she returns one day), while the looping Rika is actually from this Matsuri 2.0 fragment, who remembers her own loops, but doesn't know about Satoko's loop so far (or even only from some later fragment, not even this one yet), which might explain why the glitchy Hanyuu appeared. The Rika taken to the new loops is more like an echo of Rika.

At the end of Saikoroshi, they decide they'd accept Rika's next death and Rika talks about how manipulating and traveling between fragments was the realm of gods, something she'd leave behind. And yet there isn't a single word about any of that in Gou. Obviously Rika can't do anything about it since she has no choice in these loops, but they didn't even bother mentioning her and Hanyuu's previous resolution. Also, Meta Rika/Bernkastel in Higurashi could still be just Rika. Outside of the manga, she's never explicitly shown as a separate entity. She references herself as different from Rika, but then also says that if Rika's mind breaks she'd disappear, and sometimes goes into first person when talking about Rika's recent experiences. The manga has her as a separate entity with Rika pretty much replacing the player's role in the dialogue with her, but then the anime just had Rika in that scene with no one else, so it's clear there wasn't much of a central direction for it, just different interpretations.Because her inner personality was essentially created by the original loops, so that's not really wrong. As far as the cat name goes, there's a big difference between Rika dressing up as a cat sometimes with Bern who has a cat tail all the time and is often referenced as cat like here. Matsuri Rika gets referenced here as a cat, because, like I said, without Saikoroshi there was never a "I'm not Bernkastel" moment (although Bern up to this point shouldn't be specifically associated with cats anyway). I think the lack of Saikoroshi references and now this possible split timeline could strongly point to them splitting the Rikas into two, rather than having Bern emerge as some abstract manifestation (like Saikoroshi implied with Rika's speculation at the end).

Personally, I always disliked the idea of Takano being backed by a god-like witch when her whole plot in Higurashi seemed to be about her rejecting a traditional god in order to become one through her scientific discoveries. Still, if you read Lambda's description of her blessing for Takano, it really doesn't actually mean anything. It's pretty much a metaphor magic like the ones in Umineko's game boards. (This is Lambda commenting on her meeting with child Takano, who asks her for a guarantee that her efforts would bear fruit)Also, Lambda also says this. She was disappointed Takano was too prudent and didn't straight up ask for magical powers. Compare with Satoko in this episode, who when offered Featherine's power of traveling worlds goes "There's no way this is possible! And if it is, make it happen this instant!"

I think they will be splitting them because Gou Rika probably will become Bernkastel, so nothing good is waiting for her, while Matsuri Rika probably will still get some kind of happy epilogue. Featherine outright called Rika "cat" this episode, which basically confirms my speculation about Gou ignoring Saikoroshi (and also the epilogue scene of Higurashi, but that one could just happen much later). Rika had some minor cat associations, but Bernkastel is the one who is outright called a cat.

The Buu Saga was outright replacing all fighters with the Saiyans, whether it made sense or not (see Dabura considering Piccolo weaker than Base Goku and Vegeta). Goten was part of that as a new Saiyan fighter in order to make a duo with Trunks since Toriyama likes duos. When he returned to Dragonball, Toriyama clearly regretted that though, so there was no space for Goten and Trunks, with them at best making appearances as kids rather than actual part of the main cast (even though the anime staff initially tried pushing them for a while in anime exclusive stories before giving up, since they used to be a big part of the marketing).

Time Force is great too, but more standard. I loved the last Kitaro reboot, even though the original creator is dead and the writers were mostly new to the franchise. I think we'll see this more and more with manga/anime as original creators of successful older series start passing away, although it will take a while to reach late 80s/90s series which was the period with many international successes. He wrote the script for Revival F and the Broly movie and those feature Goten and Trunks even less than the tv show/manga so it's clear that it's all due to Toriyama. I guess "Blaze" might actually be "Blades" considering the naming pattern of the other Riders? Anyway, I'd take Ghost over Wizard. Specter and Ghost teaming up against Javert and Alain's initial arc until he powers up through Necrom's energy issues are better than anything Wizard had even if Ghost had a worse first episode and then falls apart later on.Yeah, from the start he had an oddly small presence for Rider, only writing every other arc, but by the late 20s/30s in order to write the summer movie he left for months, causing the show to slow down a lot once the secondary writers wrapped up Necrom's plot. It's clear he kept a lot of plot to write himself, which resulted in a very rushed final arc (add to that wasting two episodes with a movie tie-in too). Still, from the start of the show Ghost was just kind of mediocre, and nothing really stood out, like how in spite of his interest in historical figures most of the time Takeru still played up as a good person forced to fight, rather than being excited about meeting the souls of heroes or anything (he doesn't even talk with them until much later in the show and by their own initiative). Then it gets even worse. The point where the show slowed down also had a very bad status quo for more episodic battles due to the main enemies being the personality-less Ganmizer that could only be killed by Takeru, making the two other Riders useless... and even so they tried to give them focus episodes, which just didn't work when come the last battle of each arc it all came down to Takeru, with them moved to irrelevant side-battles like facing old enemies that aren't a threat anymore.

Jin was rebuilt into a new type of Humagear by some third party unknown to both Ark and Aruto after he was destroyed at the end of the first arc. The recaps directly brought up how not even Ark knows what is up with him. Jin also sent Ark's battle data to whoever it is right after Aruto's first battle against Ark, when he stayed behind and got taken over while Aruto escaped with Fuwa. This build up is really odd considering how late into the show we are, and how the episodes shot after the COVID situation actually gave more spotlight to that issue, suggesting they are actually going to resolve it somehow.

Ghost is pretty bland in the beginning, but I thought it was improving later - the Specter/Ghost team up against Javel was pretty great. The Ganma World reveal initially also drives some excitement into the series, you've got Takeru now actively hating them and being proactive in going after them and all the in-fighting within the Ganma. After a few episodes though, all that is settled down, with Takeru going back to "normal" and the bland Adel taking over completely and stamping out any internal conflict from the Ganma side. Alain's arc actually had a great conclusion though, but everything falls apart after that. Due to the main writer leaving for months, the show goes heavy on episodic two parters, but it was at the worst possible moment for that. The biweekly enemies were basically just robots with the same generic "robotic" personality over and over and they set things up in a way where only Ghost could kill them. It was the worst status quo possible to go into a more episodic direction. Then the main writer returns near the ending which leads to an extremely rushed final arc. The best thing about Ghost's last few episodes are Genm's appearances, even if he was just a generic "cool" antagonist at this point. As far as Wizard goes, I was never fond of it. The battles were just too one sided most of the time for me to get into them. Wizard dancing around while the monsters sit still (only to often still escape somehow due to the two parter formula) just got tiring very quickly. It did have a couple of good moments (Flame Dragon's debut and... huh... Beast saving the day near the end? The crossover epilogue?). Also, I just couldn't see the suits as "cool" when the belt voice was one of the goofiest we've ever gotten (right alongside Ghost's - aside from Necrom). The whole theme of the series also just didn't sit well with me from the start - Rather than supporting people towards their dreams, Wizard was just there to hold them after they lost their dreams, and it's portrayed as something positive rather than tragic which just felt wrong to me (most obvious with Shunpei's situation). Even Beast suffered from this. People remember the last few arcs where they tried to give him some importance, but he was useless for a long time beforehand. Then you have some bizarre plot choices too .

So, each weapon needs a larger number of animations than before, and so they couldn't update all 80+ existing weapons alongside adding new ones. I do think they messed up with their weapon choices though. Their priority seemed to be adding more generic weapons that could be shared among many cast members, but still limiting that sharing to 3 characters at most. They really should have gone with the DW7 route, where they made sure iconic weapons like claws and tonfa were all there, even if it resulted in 5 characters with the generic sword. Adding unique weapons like those should have taken priority over less important stuff like two different lance/spear type movesets (Zhao Yun vs Jiang Wei).

I think the issue is that these works are all heavily focused on building up a main story or narrative. They don't have an episodic structure focusing on standalone tales/conflicts. If they were episodic, it'd be fairly easy to disregard the ending even if it's not good, but when a lot of the focus and build up goes to the "main plotline" that is supposed to lead to the overall conclusion of the series, and that plot gets ruined in later episodes/movies, it's much harder to just ignore it all.

You can even see this when comparing BoG movie vs tv series, where they remove Goku's misgivings about needing other people's power to face Beerus and rather than that you get several scenes of him stumbling to control his new powers. They did seem to improve this by the time of the Tournament of Power though and actually played him straight (but then they wrote some dumb battles during the first half of this arc which didn't help...).It's pretty clear Toriyama only stated thinking about the whole "Goku enjoys battle to the point of letting powerful villains live just to fight against them again", which basically becomes the core of his character later, by the time of the 23rd Budokai, when he probably already was planning to reveal him as an alien (by this point it had already been stated that he knew he wasn't a human). As a child, he killed or attempted to kill villains without hesitation. Then, during the 23rd Budokai, you have Goku saying that he's letting Piccolo live because if he was killed Kamisama would die, but then in his own thoughts you get him going over about how it's actually about wanting to face Piccolo again. His characterization as a child really doesn't match with older Goku well when you look at that point specifically. Then in Z you have him letting Vegeta escape to get a chance to fight against him again, giving part of his own power to let Freeza survive and the senzu bean scene with Cell. No, it's just an edit meant to show how they think current Goku would be written in the Freeza Saga.

The GBA SRW games still used static sprites for most attacks though (although with cut-ins and different sprites for the bigger attacks). The first fully animated GBA SRW game was J. Thracia was just an odd game in many ways. Very complex map designs, many new mechanics that made the game harder and it was a very late SNES game - by this point the N64 was already on its late years. This game came out less than one year before Majora's Mask. And then there's the launch being split into the writable cartridge, with standard ones following later. I'd guess the GBA animations were mostly due to the director or art director of those games, considering how Path of Radiance's animations were closer to the SNES ones rather than continuing the GBA style.Aside from the overworld puzzles, the battle graphics looked really flashy for the GBA. I think that was really the point that made it stand out and why a revival seems kind of doomed since it probably wouldn't have the same effect.

I'd go with Mario. They've continuously created great new themes (outside of the NSMB series), while Zelda has had less and less of those due to the 3d games moving away from melodic bgms and preferring muted environmental tracks aside from a few specific scenes.

Most of these franchises have a long history and established userbase on Playstation, even if they've been declining for years. Unlike during the PSOne gen, where almost all Japanese third parties immediately abandoned Nintendo during the SNES -> N64 transition, so it was clear PSOne was the system for their games, the Playstation brand has just slowly lost Japanese exclusives through the years. There hasn't been a similar exodus in the opposite direction, so a lot of the people interested in those games still have a Playstation.

SMT2 has more lore and story stuff, as well as going for more "epic" bosses with the leader of the chaos and law factions, but SMTI does something very unique with the way it starts in the modern world and you see everything falling apart into the demon infested cyberpunk landscape while law and chaos clash. SMT2 just starts from there. As far as gameplay goes, SMT2 polishes most systems and graphics from SMT1, making menus smoother and giving more detail to the locations while everything is really blank in SMT1. However, I'd say SMT2's progression/structure is overall inferior, especially due to a fetchquest later into the game.

Thread Did Chrono Trigger ever have an answer for what happened to Schala?
Saturday Morning cartoon is a bad comparison since it's done exclusively from an American point of view. Rather than that, Chrono Trigger was basically a Shounen anime. There are cruel and brutal elements at points, but at the end of the day heroic resolve and unity leads to victory. That said, I don't think Chrono Cross is any different, which is actually why I dislike how Cross handles Chrono's plot points. Crono's crew travels blindingly through time while meeting the people who supposedly know what's going on, and are helped by a mysterious entity which is implied to be the planet itself. In Trigger, this leads to a complete good ending where the future is saved and in spite of that the future people aren't erased and just exist in the new future. According to Cross, however, they just messed with time and although it saved their future they created a lost one which eventually led to tragedy even in their own world... but Serge going in the same blind adventure somehow is supposed to be a good thing and actually solve the problems for real? It doesn't make sense thematically. Pointing out Trigger's problems only would work if Cross' protagonists were starting from a completely different point like if the heroes were professionals from some future organization overseeing the timelines - in a context like that then it could make thematic sense to call out the actions of amateurs. But, nope. Cross basically tells the player that the old group of plucky heroes unwillingly created trouble, but the whole plucky hero thing will actually work out.

Their strategic planning seems fairly poor overall. There seemed to be a push for a FE revival around the time of Binding Blade though (since Thracia was a complicated game coming out on a dead console) when you consider how it also had a manga side-story on Jump and a card game that ran up to 2006 (although it only featured FE 4/5 and FE 1/3) . The GBA games might have been pushed out quickly to ride that wave. Still, it resulted in decreasing sales in Japan with the successive games (and the West after the first localized game). But then the even worse selling Path of Radiance had a sequel with all new models, animations and artwork - which makes very little sense (even if they really wanted a sequel to Path of Radiance it should have been a much more standalone game) and it obviously backfired when it did even worse and they were told to not bother making console FEs again, and that they should focus on cheap portable games.

I think he was removed exactly because he was considered unnecessary. If they don't want variations of Toads, there's no reason to have an old Toad around when most of his roles can be replaced by generic Toads. In spite of that though, I do think there are a couple of times where he could have been there and just wasn't. Most notably Odyssey's Mushroom Kingdom. The game doesn't even try to sell him as edgy or cool, but just a fool. His standard in-game battle quotes also were based on this early story. They just seemed to assume people would instantly jump on board him, rather than attempting to make him likeable at all. Obviously, you also have Patroklos Omega, but by that point they pushed him too far to suddenly make him an hero. The whole single player was badly planned anyway. Yeah, it specifically comes up in the anime in a story where Team Plasma is making some experiment with EM waves that make Pokemon more aggressive, so Ash's group stumbles on some pretty aggressive Amoonguss. They beat them with their own Pokemon, but the oddity is that the characters then start talking about how something is wrong because Pokemon aren't suppose to attack humans and even take them to the Pokecenter for treatment. This leads them to discovering the Team Plasma plot. So, the basis of the whole story is that there be something wrong if wild Pokemon are attacking humans, which really felt off.

MvCI had Monster Hunter with the gimmick of different weapons for different attacks, but each weapon had combos built around them referencing the Monster Hunter ones. It'd be very odd to make Monster Hunter's entire moveset based on a single strong attack for each weapon. Sakurai is much more likely to take big liberties and feature loose implementation for characters from turn based games (see also Joker, whose main gimmick, the rebellion gauge, has nothing to do with Persona 5 at all) than with characters who already existed in an action gameplay environment.

Marth does have three different sequences with the dancing blade though. It just seems unlikely to me that they'd focus on the weapons, but somehow ignore the standard combos everyone would recognize and make it all about single strong hits like Byleth is currently. It'd be the opposite of the Bayonetta situation - it'd be more like if they had attempted to incorporate more of her attacks, but left her overall playstyle unrecognizable. And I said that assuming they intended a multi-weapon focus in the first place. Like you say, there are also traps an other items that could be incorporated into their moveset.

I'm not talking about anything overly complex really. I just think that the Monster Hunter's characters specials, if they were focused on showcasing multiple weapons, would focus on attack sequences with them rather than just a single hard hit. Maybe one of the attacks could be that (like Great Sword), but I can't see the entire moveset using that as a core concept. It just seems very off when you compare how much effort Smash puts recently into action based characters when adapting them. Like I said above, it's much more likely any oddness in Byleth's moveset is due to Sakurai taking bigger creative freedom with turn based characters in general , see also Joker, rather than any Monster Hunter inspiration.

On a production level it's true, but the whole story set up is fairly different (or at least was for the older shows). In the classic Ultraman story, there isn't some kind of evil empire sending random monsters every week. Each episode is basically a standalone sci-fi or fantasy story, with the only connections between them being that a special organization investigates the incident and that eventually leads to some kind of giant monster which can't be taken down even by their special tech, leading to Ultraman's appearance (who is generally secretly one of the team members) to resolve the story. Due to that they often could go heavy on themes, like humanity disturbing nature and creating their own problems or intolerance leading to conflict. That said, it was a weekly show, so some of the plots could be goofy (even disregarding the goofyness from the practical effects). Based on what Anno has talked about though, he seemed to enjoy more the otherworldly aspects of the Ultras so this certainly will take the material seriously.

Thread DC or Marvel - Which one has the better "reference/Captain Ersatz" characters to the other (Such as Squadron Supreme, Lord Havok, etc)
Yeah, Squadron Supreme is clearly bigger and better, having actually gotten their own comics even. Meanwhile, the Marvel ones in DC only get small references in other stories. Really, DC in this case messed up from the start. Right alongside the Squadron Sinister in the late 60s, DC created the Champions of Angor, which were their first Marvel reference characters. The issue is that while the Squadron Supreme went for really iconic DC characters the Champions of Angor's line up was pretty odd. Not-Scarlet Witch, Not-Antman and Not-Thor. No Captain America, Ironman and others. And these were the only ones that existed for decades (alongside a Quick Silver counterpart) which meant when they added more afterwards they were rarely consistent. Meanwhile, Squadron Supreme were making occasional appearances for pseudo-DC vs Marvel clashes in Avengers and even other books like Thor, and got their own mini-series by the 80s already. The current not-Marvel ones in DC (Retaliators) have been kind of consistent ever since DC established their modern multiverse and probably already have the longest run and biggest number of appearances for any of DC's Marvel counterparts, but even so it feels like the writers just don't like writing them. Machinehead (Ironman) even joined the multiverse Justice League, but yet has been basically mute in every single one of their appearances. The not-Marvel crew also technically was shown to be part of the army of heroes in Death Metal's final battle, but they were never drawn in the main mini-series, and only appeared in a couple of pages for tie-ins and even so also never got any lines.

I don't think sexualizing minors ever stopped in Keroro. There's a chapter around volume 22 where Natsumi is turned into a vampire and she basically spends the entire chapter naked aside from a shadow cape covering critical areas. What actually changed was that the manga stopped featuring shots of girls with visible nipples, and even went back and removed earlier ones in reprints of early volumes. Still, Keroro won a children's manga award even before that change. I think that removal was more about standards for children manga changing. Back in the 80s and 90s children manga could have stuff like nipples with little issue, while in the 00s it became something you'd only see in ecchi focused manga aimed at teens or manga for college aged or older audiences. Keroro started running in 99, so it was right during that transition (while the anime was firmly in the middle 00s).

Most of the clear examples of real life animals in the Pokemon world are from early in the franchise before they developed the setting more. The further you advance, the less references you have, aside from those legacy ones. Nowadays, the most you get are minor visual effects with butterflies, birds or bees. That said, Pokemon are divided by categories and even today those are named after real animals, even for new Pokemon. I don't think it necessarily means there are real animals though. Pikachu and Marill can be known as Mouse Pokemon due to some of their shared traits even if there isn't a real world mouse in the Pokemon world.

Thread Could Marvel Studios get away with making a Squadron Supreme movie?
The characters exist since the 70s (well, 60s for the design/names, but 71 was when they first appeared actually mirroring the Justice League as characters). It's too late to suddenly claim copyright infringement regarding them. They'd only have an issue if they were using them to rip-off some unrelated DC story, but they obviously wouldn't do that. It would either feature them as a villains/antagonists to the standard Marvel heroes or an adaptation of their 80s mini about them fighting among themselves about whether they should control the country after removing a despot from power. They first appeared as random Avengers villains that just had a powerset resembling the Justice League, the Squadron Sinister. Then later, those were revealed to be just copies, and it was shown there was a parallel world where they were the greatest heroes protecting it from various threats, the Squadron Supreme. Still, due to one misunderstanding or another, they ended up clashing with the Avengers a few times. Some of these appearances were used for humor, like when Hyperion (Superman) and his not-Lex appeared in a Thor issue about the shooting of a movie, with several references to goofy 60s Superman plots. The Squadron Supreme actually first got an actual starring role in a mini-series in the 80s, and this one was a very serious plot about the team deciding to take control of a chaotic America and eventually splitting due to the consequences of that. Nighthawk (the Batman counterpart) is eventually elected president and creates his own team to face the Squadron in a battle that ends in tragedy. There was also Supreme Power in the early 00s, which were several mini-series with even grittier takes on these characters, although due to creative changes it didn't have its intended conclusion, rather than that becoming a mediocre crossover with the Ultimate Marvel line.

Thread I've come to accept party based JRPGS will never not have the Power of Friendship in them.
I think multiple people working together for a shared goal is just fine. The issue is that many times it doesn't stop there, and power of friendship becomes an ethereal force that gives the protagonist a power up. He doesn't actually beat the villain due to working with his friends, but because valuing his friends somehow becomes extra power for the hero's party (and in some cases just the main hero, which is rather contradictory). It doesn't happen in every JRPG though, but it's still oddly common.

In previous versions of the future written by Hickman himself Franklin is shown to be around long after Earth is taken over by machines. No, you're the one that misunderstood things there. The evolved people in the final future shown in PoX/HoX were homo novissima, homo sapiens evolved through artificial controlled means, not evolved machines (which were reduced to their servants again). They all do get eliminated by the Phalanx though, which just reduces them to info stored in them rather than allowing them to really transcend into anything like they hoped.

Eh, that's rather inconsistent. They're a private group, sometimes with ties to the American government, but often with the UN rather than that. Also, often when they were tied to the government directly (both the more recent post-Civil War period and some older storylines too, like back in the late 70s), the government ties are portrayed as something negative, with the government wanting to control super humans and having clashes with the Avengers due to that. There are standalone individual issues where they help mutants too (like Thor facing the Marauders during the mutant massacre to save Angel). It's only when you jump to the X-Men side that you get this narrative of complicit agreement with it all, like the recent issue in the last run of Uncanny where Captain America was playing security for a mutant hate rally that attempted to lynch Cyclops, which in this case specifically just becomes ridiculous when in his own book he was standing up to very similar far right groups. Really, it amazes me that Marvel just let's the X-Men editorial shit on every other character like that.

It likely will just result in problems down the road if they only have a couple of pages in the final issue showing the actual 616 status quo. We also know that the whole Krakoa system is in the mainstream continuity by now, so even if this isn't the main continuity it sounds like whatever is actually going forward will be extremely similar in all major points.

Thread JoJo-ERA, it's time to settle this: The World vs King Crimson. Who wins?
Diavolo still would have Epitaph, so he'd see the aftermath of Dio's time stop and then could just move out of the way. Dio then would act like he originally intended to, but would hit nothing. Now, if you go with King Crimson being able to interact physically during time skip, then Dio could set up traps like using time stop to throw a bunch of rocks at once without leaving space for Diavolo to dodge, but at the same time it would allow Diavolo to easily attack Dio if he got close. If King Crimson can't interact with anything during the time skip, then Diavolo would surpise Dio with time skip once early in the battle but he'd likely survive due to vampire powers and then it would come down to whether King Crimson can punch faster than Dio can activate Time Stop again.

That's actually one of the main reasons people say King Crimson doesn't make sense. In some scenes it's portrayed as still needing to dodge or even interacting with objects during skipped time (the later mainly in scenes that are outright skipped, with the viewer only getting the aftermatch, like when he faced Narancia), but in others it's even a plot point that it can't interact with the world during skipped time. Either way, I assume Stopped Time would just seem like teleportation/burst of super speed from King Crimson's point of view. I don't think King Crimson interacting with the world or not would change anything in this case.

You could create characters, kingdoms, meeting/throne rooms(with options like futuristic, medieval and Japanese, not just based on Three Kingdoms) and actually save the custom scenarios and play through them from multiple points of view, and there was an immense moveset variety due to having everything from DW7 and DW8 (including weapons that had been dumped and replaced).

What I've read (and watched) suggests exactly the opposite. College has too much freedom compared to high school, so most of the time bonds with classmates seem much smaller, since they don't stay together as long, unless they're tied by other elements, like shared interests. That ends up favoring high school since it's a more universal and tightly knit experience. On the other hand, if anything, actual high school in Japan has much less freedom than portrayed in anime since studying for university entrance exams is a big focus in reality, while most series sideline that, or portray it in a way where it doesn't take time from random clubs or hanging out with their friends even during the third year.

Mario has been stuck with FLUDD since Brawl, in spite of that being a reference to a specific game and not fitting at all the concept of Mario being a simple and straightforward character. The fact that Sakurai avoids fully revamping even a single character is why I don't think an actual moveset "reboot" will ever happen either. If he feels like changing a character's moveset completely is the same as cutting them, I don't see how he'd just go and then change everyone. A reboot probably would just be the same kind of system and moveset updates we see from one game to another, just this time completely redoing the animations and models, even if just to recreate the same attacks they had before in many cases.

Thread Is Fire Emblem Fates worth it?
We don't know the story was actually cut down, just that they hired Shin Kibayashi for outlines, but then he came back with full scripts. What we actually know is that they still added some stuff like creating Hinoka to have an equal number of siblings for both sides and the text related to gameplay mechanics since his script was written without any gameplay guidance aside from the game's basic chapter structure (which is why Fates suffers more than usual from introducing elements that then go on to be ignored, since the game itself was developed very separately from the plot). The story is missing basic elements you'd see in other games like a continent's name and clear political structure because it was written by someone who never wrote any other FE story and only checked FE right before writing for this game. Although the final script and supports were by a bunch of other writers they clearly didn't want to fill in those holes since it could clash with the main writer's work (Shin Kibayashi was originally supposed to write a Fates manga too before the entire project disappeared. It wasn't supposed to be a one and done project).

What disappoints me a bit is the lack of polish and budget, like few cutscenes and not even replacing characters with generics when you choose them as part of your team, but they're set to appear in the stage due to the story. There is some speculation that the moveset was made for Navarre in first place, but they moved Navarre to NPC/DLC clone once IS asked them to add Lyn to the game. Navarre is often shown dual wielding in artwork, while Lyn only did it in her Awakening DLC appearance. There's also the C4( I think, the one where he just jumps in a circle 4 times), which is similar to what you get with a brave sword and the Swordmaster critical animation in Shadow Dragon/New Mystery. The C1 matches Lyn's attack, but it's also the standard Swordmaster animation in Shadow Dragon... so it doesn't really tell anything. And, regarding her Awakening appearance, although they eventually added her Awakening costume, her Sol Katti has a design based on its original GBA icon, while it was redesigned in Awakening once it got an actual model and artwork, and that design was kept by IS for Heroes - so, it doesn't seem like Awakening was really a primary source of inspiration for her here, since they outright ignored an actual detailed artwork and model and tried to make a design out of a small weapon icon (which didn't even match her battle sprite). There's also how in Awakening she insists that Robin is Mark even if the player denies it, while in Warriors she just says they're similar.

Well, Celica is just Marth's moveset, and you've already played with Lyn's if you're using the DLC (Navarre). I generally liked the systems of the game though, like commanding units and attacks being able to open the weak point gauge, rather than having to rely solely on the AI like in HWs, which can be really frustrating at times. It's not the first time we get commanding units, but I think this was the best implementation so far, especially since the units are actually worthwhile as npcs too, rather than needing the player to switch to them to accomplish anything in time. However, when the developers kept defending their decisions regarding cast and even doubled down on it with the DLC it was obvious that side of the game had gone very wrong.

Something like that (or later Corrin sometimes being stated to have spared the people he defeated in-game) would work mostly fine in an anime or manga, and it seems to be a fairly common protagonist cliche nowadays. You'd see the character avoiding deaths in real time, but the gameplay loop of FE just goes directly against it. Of course, the story also had issues by itself, even ignoring the clash with the gameplay.

However, mercenary has two promotions and both also give big speed boosts, and Tobin's speed soon falls behind due to low growths, so it can actually help him later, even if it's not really the best class for him. Most characters in Echoes actually die when killed, so, yes, they don't appear in cutscenes anymore. The GC game had really stiff animations, and although Radiant Dawn (Wii) improves a bit on that it's still tied to the same format of the 2d games rather than flowing better like in the later 3d games. Radiant Dawn did have by far the best legendary tome animations though. I like the animations of the first two 3ds titles but more due to their flow (one attack leading to the next one, especially with 3-4 characters fighting at once at times, rather attack and return to initial position like in the GBA games) rather than any actual standout animation. Awakening had some bizarre animations (Armors slipping during and sliding during charge, a legendary sword being thrown away repeatedly for an attack) though that were fixed by Fates. Echoes does a great job improving on them even further (like specific animations for attacks that are going to knock down an enemy, multiple animations for dodges and such), but it's still a style very different from the GBA ones.

Actually, Donnel has a special issue since he can't actually "promote" from his base class (villager). It's a special class with no promotion, which means you can level it up to level 30, but unlike other special classes (Manakete, Tagel, Lodestar, Dread Figther, Bride), its base stats are bellow unpromoted classes (and its caps are low) rather than on par with promoted ones. What you want to do with him is give him a second seal to turn him into a mercenary, and from there you promote him after he hits level 10 again. Anyway, you'll get a few master seals before actually being able to buy them freely.

No, you could have used the second seal as early as level 10 (if you don't care about the villager's level 15 skill). There's no reason to wait for level 30 considering villager's low caps. The main advantage is that from there (level 30) you could class change straight to a promoted class even using just a second seal, but mercenary has some decent skills especially considering Donnel's high luck, so you should go with mercenary first. There's also the issue of weapon availability (Donnel's other class options give him sword or axes, not lances, so his lance level is wasted).

You promote at level 20, unless the character is maxing a bunch of stats earlier than that. Class change (second seal) at level 10 if you want to go to another base class before promotion (if you class changed before, you can promote at level 10 since you'll effectively have 20 levels). Avoid class changing from a promoted class to an unpromoted one unless you're just level/skill grinding. You can go from a promoted class to another at level 10 (promoted), but you might want to wait until level 15 since it's when you get the final skill. The people recommending promoting as early as possible either are grinding levels and collecting skills, playing on normal, where the enemies are very weak and the level up penalty isn't that big or abusing pair up and the avatar's skill to basically only level up two characters. Promoting early will cripple your growth later if you just want to play through the main chapters, not grind experience dlc or random high level battles due to the extra levels adding up.

Jojo could reboot because it already had set up changing protagonists and resetting or ignoring power levels. No way Dragonball could just dump Goku and all the cast, or restarting Goku's journey from zero. Even something like Jojo part 3 (applying big nerfs to Goku's abilities to push some new hero like how Hamon was nerfed there to push Stands) probably would get a huge backlash.

Thread Which is better: DBGT or DBSuper without ToP
Most of the Shadow Dragon Saga is pretty bad too. The episodic set up with only Goku and Pan traveling around just doesn't make sense at that point. It's made worse by the staff's decision that Pan could never evolve since she existed to be motivation for Goku... which also shows how they had an intrinsic misunderstanding of his character. Well, Super had its issues with Goku's characterization too though, especially in these early arcs, even if they were different ones, but Super's playing up him being dumb to minimize his character flaws/egoistic choices is a lesser problem than playing him up as a "pure hero", who is focused on winning and beating villains, rather than enjoying fighting. GT gets to the point of having Goku telling people that they shouldn't even bother fighting and should give him their power. One is the writing team acknowledging something and attempting to minimize it in a bad way, the other just shows a big misunderstanding of the source material. Also, although Super had many off-model scenes, as early as Super Saiyan Goku vs Beerus you've got fluid animation that GT never matches. And GT only gets worse throughout, with many static or low framerate shots in later episodes. Aside from the often mentioned "pans of stills", which happen when the secondary characters face Super 17 and Omega, you've got stuff like this Dragon Fist against Eis Shenron, which has great framing but is ruined by having an extremely low number of frames to the point that the illusion of movement is completely broken when you get the zoomed out dragon.

Thread Why do people want Geno for Smash so badly?
It was initially because people didn't expect many third parties in Brawl, so asking for Geno seemed for feasible due to him being partially Nintendo. However, afterwards it was all basically a feedback loop of Smash's own fanbase. A lot of the demand for him had died by the time of the Wii U game, but then it was reborn when Sakurai talked about how he thought he could be a neat fighter in an interview. This interview made Geno seem actually feasible, which then made him get more requested.

I don't think it was the children system by itself, but the general amount of gameplay/progression possible outside of battles, rather than just a linear chapter structure, (open map, large number of supports, and, yes, marriage/children allowing players to go for their own pairs and see the fruits of that). Still, the marriage and child system was a big part of that. Fates hurt those features since they lacked connection to the main game, almost like the past FE cameos in Awakening. I also felt like with Fates they deliberately shafted the 2nd generation. Design-wise, someone like Inigo or Owain looked about as heroic as the main cast in Awakening, but the 2nd generation in Fates all look younger and "lesser" than the first gen. And although they're usable instantly, they lack features like unique weapons, and even full class inheritance which can hurt them compared to their parents gameplay-wise.We got a 1.9 millions number a few months after the worldwide launch, but later there was a chart for Heroes' launch that had Fates only around 1.2 millions, IIRC, with Awakening above it with 1.6 millions. It's not clear what that means, but most people seem to assume that the earlier and higher number was counting the Conquest/Birthright DLC paths, rather than just the base games. If that speculation is right though, it seems like Fates saw a significant drop in international numbers coming from Awakening, considering how it sold more than Awakening in Japan itself.

The one consistent element in the recent remakes is that map design remains mostly the same. Game mechanics and story additions have all wildly varied from one remake to another, between sticking with the original or doing their own thing, and out of those changes from one remake to another only expanded and modified story seems to have happened due to player feedback. Everything else was just IS trying different things without any real pattern behind them.

As far as story goes, I think the idea with Fates was adding a 2nd generation, due to it being a popular feature in Awakening, without stepping on the toes of the guest written main story. So, the children couldn't really be relevant at all there. Of course, the main problem in the end is that the main story was hardly good enough to justify all the lack of connection between it and various secondary features tied to the My Castle (including, but not limited to the children).

I could see them doing away with 2nd generation, because, at least in the Awakening/Fates model, it's mostly a device for grinding special units. Most of Awakening's DLC was heavily focused on that grinding too, taking the player to much higher levels than the base game ones, with the increased stat caps and higher level chapters, but Fates' DLC wasn't focused on that at all, in spite of the game having the same systems that allowed Awakening to do it. Heroes' existence might have changed their direction since that's their grinding game.

Fates' main writer isn't around anymore either though. They didn't even bring him back for Fates' own standalone DLC maps. Depending on how they handle cutscenes in FE Switch, I could see an Awakening situation popping up all over again though, where they quickly realize they can't do cutscenes for everything and suddenly the story becomes really abridged. Hopefully they don't shy away from narration if that happens again.

I just don't think Fire Emblem works to show "relationships that grow realistically" very well. The large cast and need to keep the script under a certain limit all work against it. Now, that doesn't mean I don't care for the relationships in the game. I care, but my attachment to them comes mostly from them being playable units. So, I'll take a system that makes it so that it's the units I'm using that get featured in more scenes and also that gives me freedom to go for the pairings I prefer rather than get stuck with often unsatisfying choices, even if the build up to them is somewhat more natural (although still generally pretty poor outside of the context of FE itself).

Regarding that rumor, they mention the possibility of changing the avatar's personality, but technically that was already in Fates. The speech styles in the Japanese version sometimes rewrote entire sentences to show a more casual or overly formal personality if the player had chosen them. It just got cut by the localization.Part of it is that they're pretty conscious about how gameplay power plays part in popularity, just look at the Royals in Fates. They pushed them onto the player not only storywise, but also through their stats.I think even without an official Avatar elements like Awakening's 1st person marriage pictures or Fates' "My Room" would still have happened. Just look at Echoes. Even though Alm and Celica aren't avatars, the game has no problem suddenly going first person with them when it wants (like the conversations in villages). Rather than an avatar, you'd just get a designed protagonist that couldn't be customized in the same position.

That was one of the points where Corrin failed as an avatar character, since their relationship with their siblings was pretty defined, limiting their age range. In addition to that taking the protagonist spot ended up working against them since they could easily take decisions the player disagreed with, especially when the game went out of their way to show them making wrong decisions to keep their hands clean, while other characters take the blood in their place. Situations like those really should have been avoided to avoid dissonance from the protagonist, especially if they weren't going to leave things up to player choice.

Children were part of Awakening's and Fates's new mechanics for extended character building compared to past FE games, alongside the tweaked class change and skill systems, but it feels like IS stepped back on that at some point during Fates itself. They made it easier for them to immediately become decent units, but harder to make them actually top tier. Fates' DLC also didn't add playable content to incentive the players to train extremely strong characters way above the original end game, unlike in Awakening. Part of that might be due to Heroes existing where building up characters is the whole focus of the game. I'm not sure if they'd outright drop them though, especially if they can't come up with something promising to replace them as a feature. Echoes isn't even a million seller, so I can't see them scaling back things to that level in a new title.

If they make split games again they should just go with completely independent stories that happen to share the same setting (so justifying shared classes and locations). Above any storytelling issues, something that disappointed me about Fates' story was how blatant they were with their "wink/nod, there's another campaign you should totally buy!". The endings of Birthright and Conquest have a bunch of lines that are only there to remind the player that they don't know everything and that the story is inconclusive rather than just focusing on giving a satisfying ending.Kris has no effect on the main plot though. He doesn't have any story role in the existing chapters. He's just there for character interactions, with his contributions always happening in the new chapters that aren't tied directly into the main plot. He does have a lot of presence though in spite of that, since he gets interactions with everyone and even supports with almost everyone, while the other characters are stuck with an extremely limited list of optional base conversations that don't involve Kris. Edit: Yeah, some strategies ended up credited to Kris too like mentioned above, but I don't think it happens that often. Kris is still extremely passive in the main plot even with those small additions.

Yes, they got unique gimmicks, rather than just variations of the same battle (SMB3) or of a set of battles (SMW), but different bosses with completely unique designs is an easy choice over a bunch of mini-Bowsers. I'd guess they'd look at primitive civilizations as case studies. Interfering with their development could result in cultural changes that wouldn't happen otherwise and would ruin that. If the point that would trigger actual contact would be warp or some other kind of space faring technology, it'd be because at that point contact would be inevitable at some point, and it'd be better if it happens on their terms. And, yes, I guess you could say that it'd be egocentric to avoid sending help, if they have the technology to help, but if you look at it from another point of view, they wouldn't want to endanger themselves in order to help us. Even if they appeared with completely good intentions and the general reception was positive, you could still get random terrorist attacks. People also inevitably would attempt to get their tech even if they didn't want to give it yet (like if they shared medicine (if it's even possible), but held back on some kind of fast space travel and weapons), which certainly would cause conflict.

The issue with Donna is that they initially changed Wonder Woman's origin to make her only debut in modern day (unlike Superman and Batman where their new origins took place in the past). So, they were left with Wonder Girl having debuted before Wonder Woman which led to her needing a new origin, which got tweaked several times. So Donna's history became a mess again (her actual creation was already a mess since she was added to Teen Titans due to a mistake - "Wonder Girl" was just Diana's early adventures, not a separate character, before she was added to Teen Titans) and they've never been able to solve that even after restoring Wonder Woman's early debut due to how confusing her continuity already was.

For Velezark, there's the weakness that the game points out regarding how the weapons he summons correspond to his current weapon type (so if he attacks with energy swords, he's weak to lances). Anyway, the movie attempts to be artistic and is really pretty, but it missed the appeal of the franchise, which ended up leading to all the problems afterwards - low budget ending for Hades, Next Dimension with a really slow run, and lack of direction of later animated entries. Of course, Kurumada's Next Dimension, which is just another Sanctuary run, wasn't really the answer either (and even if this ever finishes it's all just a prologue to the actual Heaven battle so it won't even really close the story), but it should be easily possible to make an action packed movie that's not just a new sanctuary run.

It's why you still get to choose answers sometimes. They can talk just fine. This is also the same reason they aren't very expressive though. The whole point is exactly to avoid giving them their own unique personality, so if they were extremely expressive you'd still have a personality through that, which would kill the point of making them silent. Even in Wind Waker Link's case, his personality was mostly in the form of exaggerated reactions, which obviously don't work everywhere.

Also, Ultimate Thor had multiple hammers (in fact, the whole way what is supposed to be "his" hammer has been written post-Secret Wars makes little sense anyway, since they use the design of the one that was supposed to be a tech weapon, but treat it as a true Mjolnir... rather than just using Ult. Franklin losing his powers is certainly temporary, but I wouldn't be surprised if the "he isn't a mutant" sticks for a while. There are different editorial departments, which is probably what's pushing this attempt to break ties of characters from other editors with the mutants even after the movie issue was solved (since they don't want mutant editorial getting involved/pushing to take their characters).Yes, mutants are specifically ones with X-Gene. Any other power source, even if from birth, isn't considered a mutant.

No, this just completely clashes with that story. If you attempt to see this story in the context of that one it just makes Reed seem completely incompetent, since he was forcefully hiding/deactivating Franklin's X-Gene according to that story, but now it turns out he never had one (and Xavier learned about that, so the scene here can't be explained by that). Oops. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this story is just Slott throwing a tantrum to avoid more X-Men related FF stories by other writers.

I think they aren't aging them exactly because they don't want to give them any focus. If they were older it'd be even harder to justify excluding them for the fighter line ups like in RoF, the ToP or the manga's Moro arc. So, considering that, I don't think they will be much better off when they're forced to age them. It just will be even more obvious how they're trying to forcefully sideline them even compared to other secondary characters.

Thread Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Evangelion - One of the messiest, most uneven narratives I've encountered
The whole mythology behind the series has basically been made available outside of the animation itself. The initial project plan has been published for example and it had some of the main core concepts pretty explicit there and alongside that there was the highly marketed "classified information" released alongside a PS2 Eva game. The Classified Information does have the issue of not being just direct quotes from the series' staff, but rather just the final product put together by the game's staff based on an interview with series' staff (possibly just Anno too). The series also diverges pretty greatly from the initial outline after the halfway point, so the project plan isn't fully reliable either, but most of what it was set there regarding the basic premise seems to stand well enough with the final product at least in general terms even when specific details where changed. I think they avoided them in the series mostly due to considering the answers very mundane. The explanation for everything basically comes down to "aliens did it", even if in obviously more elaborate ways

Classism in IV is neutral/chaos aligned though. It came due to Akira's rule of Mikado, and the angels immediately put an end to it once returning to power... that just receives no focus in the main story at all. You'll only learn about it if you talk with the npcs before going to meet the angels, and Walter has no reaction to it, which is just baffling considering how big that was for his character.

Yeah, the way SMTIV's story was designed expecting people to play the game multiple times was a mistake. Each playthrough should have been standalone like in previous games, not leaving big gaps. Are you talking about when Jonathan and Walter split and you need to meet one of them? No, that's not the route lock. Although if you constantly sided with Walter's choices and went with him it's very likely your alignment will be very chaos aligned by that point and it'll be hard to get to neutral.

Speaking about older SMT... I wish they brought back the idea of recruiting generic human party members. I don't get why they didn't go for it in SMTIV/A, it seems odd Ashura-Kai and Cult of Gaea members would be completely unwillingly to join the main cast.To be fair, the early games don't exactly have masterful writing either, but they just went for something very different atmosphere and story-wise from the more recent ones, so these new games going for something completely different will likely clash with people who enjoyed those older entries. For example, in the original SMT game, the law and chaos heroes are big archetypes that don't even have official names. The Heroine has character initially, but at a certain point she becomes just a generic love interest. However, even if you choose the neutral route and attempted to turn against both law and chaos, all disasters that happened in the other routes still would be there. You still would be left with only the same party member that would remain with you in the other routes. It wasn't presented as a better ending than law and chaos, just kept your character clean from participating in their actions, giving a very different experience from the current games where bonds save the day and even in something like IV Neutral route is something that you consciously need to go for, with the game deliberately making it hard to reach it. Then you've got Nocturne which seems to be a big entry point for part of the fanbase, and is even further storywise from the modern games, where there weren't human party members or even generic npcs to talk to, and the few surviving humans were pretty much enemies of the player unless you choose to join their crazy plans.

It's weird. The One Piece manga sells much better than the DB manga (in Japan), but when you look at overall merchandising and games Dragonball dominates One Piece in Japan. See Bandai's numbers for example. Even without a show on air, Dragonball merchandising makes more than double of what OP makes in Japan (Sales of IPs (Toys and Hobby Business, Japan)). And outside of One Piece's peak popularity around 2010, even the game push has generally been smaller than what DB gets. The manga was (and still is) extremely successful, but for some reason they were unable to really push success elsewhere outside of that peak era.

Her sprite was fairly small originally and even in artwork she also was portrayed as small compared to other characters, often paired up with other characters who are considered "children".While nowadays she's portrayed in the same generic range of other "young female" characters like Yuri (who was supposed to be 20 years old back in KoF94) and Athena (who was 17 in 94 and then a generic 18 years old afterwards). That's not to say you don't get some art where she does look very young though, but that goes for any of those other "cute" female characters too.

Thread Getter Robo Arc anime announced for 2021
All animated Getter adaptations are completely standalone and none of them adapt the manga directly so far. Meanwhile, the main manga series are all connected Getter Robo -> Getter Robo G -> Getter Robo Go -> Shin Getter -> Getter Arc (unfinished due to Ishikawa's death) Getter Go was written more than a decade after Getter and G, so there's a big change of tone and focus there, and the rest of the manga follows that (there are also some new chapters added in collections that attempt to make the first two series line up better with the later ones, when you're reading it the art style change is obvious). Shin Getter is a prequel to Go. As far as animation goes, there are the 70s tv series (Getter and Getter G) which are connected to each other and were very loose adaptations of the Getter Robo and Getter Robo G manga, changed to fit the mold of "weekly super robot shows for children" that they had at the time. Then there was a standalone Getter Go in the early 90s, which was another loose adaptation of the Getter Robo Go manga, but, on top of that also eliminating the connections to previous series (which eventually pretty much take over the plot of the manga). After that you get the OVAs - first there was Getter Robo Armageddon. It's a completely standalone original story using elements from many different points of the manga, but the big selling point at the time is that it was the first time they were pushing something closer to Ishikawa's actual style in animation. It features the cast of Getter G and some of Go (although these ones pretty much in-name only) while featuring many elements from Getter Robo Go (it talks about a backstory regarding lunar wars and an accident which might make it look like it's a sequel to something, but all that is original to this anime). Then there was Neo Getter vs Shin Getter, a very short and episodic OVA which mixed some early chapters from Go (introducing the new team) with the later ones (where the plot becomes connected to the original series). Yet again, it was completely unrelated to any existing adaptation though, aside from using a character and robot that originated from the 70s tv anime rather than the manga. There's also "New Getter Robo", which starts as a direct adaptation of the original manga, but changing the enemies from dinosaurs to Oni. However, it then introduces a new original third pilot and starts using unadapted material from later manga like "Shin Getter".

There was an event about Batmen from a "Dark Multiverse", worlds born from nightmares of the main universes, attacking the main Earth, and one of those Batmen was actually a Batwoman from Earth "negative 11", a nightmare version of Earth-11, who went crazy after Cat Man was killed and enhanced herself with Atlantean DNA to fight back against an invasion from Atlantis.

Drive is by W's writer. It starts basically following W's style but the main Rider is a cop rather than a private detective. Halfway through changes to a more serialized format. I think the first half isn't as good as W due to some issues (like giving too much screentime to the secondary cast even though they take more than 10 episodes to start giving them actual characterization beyond comic relief, or robot criminals disguised as humans feeling kind of off compared to human criminals), but overall it's still worth watching. The crossover movie with Gaim is actually a better epilogue for Gaim than the final episode itself too. It's also the first Rider series produced by Ohmori, and this second half has many characteristics of his later series. Ghost is skippable. It's a pretty mediocre show that suffers from various issues due to having a first timer (main) producer and toku writer. The main cast is kind of bland, and the first few episodes are rushed. The show improves after a while, but completely falls apart later when the main writer leaves for months, but still keeps the main writer position, forcing the secondary writers to make the show spin its wheels during the worst moment for that. Then the main writer returns for a movie tie-in episode and a really rushed final arc. Ex-Aid is Ohmori's 2nd series. It has very goofy designs and the first few episodes are pretty light, but it actually changes to a running plot style right at the end of the first arc during the early 10s. The cast is pretty great too. I think the 2nd half of the series didn't go far enough with the consequences of what was happening, and the final villain drags on for a bit before the final arc starts, but it doesn't hurt the show much. Build is probably the closest series to Gaim. It has a very strong running plot with large consequences to the show's world, rather than the usual more self-contained battles which seem to be mostly ignored by the world, and the lead actor also is very good when the show requires more from him later on. The pacing gets kind of sloppy near the ending though. Zi-O is kind of a mess and features past Riders, so it's not recommended to skip to it. That said, Ex-Aid and Ghost are kind of shafted here anyway (and even Build's presence is only saved by the Heisei Generation Forever movie rather than the tv show itself). Zi-O has a pretty big split on how it handles crossovers in the first and second halves of the series, with the ones in the second half being (generally) much more fun, so most series featured in the beginning of Zi-O end up shafted in the long run.

There's a fairly unique rivalry between the villains and the heroes, both constantly grow with the villains basically having their own arcs in parallel to the heroes starting from the early 10s. It gets kind of muddled in Jungle Fury since they couldn't settle on the main villain being completely possessed or just corrupted (they initially wanted to make him completely possessed but seemed to change to corrupted later to adapt some of these stories from Geki).

Do you mean darker than those series? X is probably the darkest Showa tv series, although the monster designs in the 2nd half get goofy. The early Heisei series from Kuuga to Blade are all pretty serious and dark, and generally actually sustain that atmosphere throughout, with the humor being fairly down to earth. Among more recent series, Gaim and Build start quite goofy but actually have tons of plot movement throughout and end up with really dire serious scenarios later on. There's also Amazons, a shorter series aimed at adult fans (and homage to Amazon, but completely unrelated plot-wise) that has a constant dark and gritty atmosphere throughout, with almost no moments of levity. I haven't watched enough Ultraman to really make recommendations there. I guess depending on what you mean by "serious/darker" even the OG Ultraman and UltraSeven could work. UltraSeven also leads to bunch of Seven focused spin-offs which were mostly made for older audiences (and are directly connected to it story-wise, so you need to watch the original unlike with Amazons).

You can see him before the box in the first episode of the Rogue mini-series, he had some goofy stuff (mainly going to karaoke) but not as much as played out later. I think part of it was specifically for that two parter with the different outfits and then the shirts. Most of those two episodes were very exposition heavy, so I guess they thought they needed some humor to balance all that talking, and it fell to Gentoku as a way to make him feel closer to the group since he had no friendly dynamic with the rest of the cast before that. The shirt gimmick continues afterwards, but nowhere as heavy as in those two episodes.

The first season is generally considered good, the 2nd one has mixed reactions. The movie is kind of weird, most of it feels like a random and slow side-story, but then it has a climax thrown in the last 10 or so minutes that mostly closes the plotlines of the two main Amazons. The actual climax is pretty great, but it feels out of place in that story, and everything before just felt boring and try-hard.

As far as the Lupinranger favoritism goes, you can see it in the basic set up of the series. The Lupinranger have to be involved in every episode to steal the collection, while the Patranger are throw away and can be ignored in some episodes. Some later episodes of Dekaranger also go surprisingly far into crime drama writing, something that never really happens with Lupinranger vs Patranger, since the narrative is more built around the Lupinranger. And, yeah, later in the show they also get preferential treatment as far as new mecha and power ups go.

Kamen Rider has traditionally had an older fanbase too in spite of the show itself targeting children/families, which is why sometimes you get stuff like the Rogue mini-series that blatantly does stuff they couldn't get away with in a tv series for children, even though it's directly tied to the tv show Build. In Japan, Kamen Rider is Bandai's second most profitable licensing brand nowadays, only behind Gundam (which is entirely owned by Bandai), although when you add worldwide numbers Dragonball also beats it. Movies generally hover around 1billion to 1.5 billion yen in Japanese box office, which is good considering how low budget they obviously are (and there seems to be a hard cap for super hero movies in Japan, even Marvel's movies have trouble breaching 2 billion yen, and End Game hit around 5 billion yen, which is high compared to the others, but still nowhere near the top of Japan's box office). Outside of Japan tokusatsu in general is still a very minor niche though. Rider obviously has little presence in spite of becoming more known online. Power Rangers is around but far from its former peak, although nowadays thanks to the comics you have more products for older fans.

Neat. Although I guess going by other screens there's no way to make a helmet with a custom texture?I'm pretty sure that's due to Toei. Look at Kikaider, another series originating from an Ishinomori manga that got a Toei Toku. We only got an anime based on it after decades of Toei barely touching the franchise. They also apparently blocked Disney from making a Power Rangers cartoon (although this later one is all hearsay since it's just based on leaks). They seem to have no issue with manga or comics, but they seem to think that an anime might hurt the actual on-going franchise somehow.

"They" are different now though. Hasbro wasn't involved with the franchise at all at the time of the last movie. They will have to redesign everything for the movies anyway (and even tv shows considering the plans to make them directly tied to the movies), there's no way they'd go with the low budget existing suits and designs in theatrical features. Now, if they stay with Toei they can go with close modernized redesigns, but if they weren't going to do that they might as well go without Toei. Mecha design also shouldn't be an issue for Hasbro, so the big point would be suit design, and that's considerably easier (even if Saban still messed up last time).

Rebirth got basically killed off. Dan Didio has spoken after leaving DC about how he thought it went too far and brought back things that were problems in the first place. You could see that most Rebirth setups got dropped (or moved to self-contained mini-series for Johns' stuff) after a while. They didn't do it openly at the time (and never talked against it) since it was clearly popular with hardcore fans, but it's clear the overall direction of the line had abandoned it when you look at where everything was going. That said, I never expect much from this from the start, once it was clear it was a Johns idea rather than something from the actual Batman writers. He has never handled Batman very well, and he doesn't even seem to have some kind of relevant thematic goal for this narrative.

The story is very basic (narration and a political overview of the situation was first added in the SNES version, so this one only has brief dialogue before each battle in addition to a few extra conversations when recruiting units during battles) but basic systems are there already and the maps generally do have some unique challenges, avoiding featureless open fields (unlike Echoes/Gaiden or even some later Awakening maps), however there are various oddities compared to later games, with many systems just feeling incomplete in this first entry. No movement or damage previews; only a few classes like cavalier, mage and mercenaries can promote; you don't gain experience by healing, so healers can get a lot of experience by getting attacked before promoting, the item storage/convoy is a physical location you need to reach in the maps rather than just being a menu between or during the missions or assigned to a unit like how the SNES version just made Marth act as a convoy too. Animations and cpu turns were slow, but it seems this version fixes that with optional speed boost settings shown in the trailer.FE3, the first FE game for SNES, included a FE1 remake in its new engine (adding narration story segments, but missing a couple of characters and chapters) and a completely new story/campaign. Then when they made the DS remake, it only remade the original FE1 (although including the extra story/narration segments added by the FE3 version), but it didn't include the actual new story/campaign from FE3. The remake heavily modernized the gameplay, including some questionable stuff like free classing, but actually didn't touch the story much compared to FE3's previous remake of FE1, outside of a new prologue and some extra post-recruitment dialogue every unit got. Then afterwards they made yet another DS remake just for the second half of FE3, the actual new story, but heavily reusing systems from the first DS remake, which actually meant FE3's unique gameplay features were lost.

Now this means everything is rather superficial, but it's not like people are looking for more out of an action series. Then the anime's great animation obviously elevated everything. Still, people saying it's just the animation are overlooking how UFOtable obviously can't create hits like this every time. The atmosphere gets less somber and there's some comic relief by the time Hayato/Rider 2 debuts too (episodes 14-15).It's a mixed bag so far. According to the official site, next episode is the final episode of this arc (and the newest episode that aired but still hasn't been subbed had Aruto being proactive, but in the worst possible moment...). But, yeah, I agree about how they've mishandled the entire Thouser plotline. I think the core of the issue though is that, going by an interview from the beginning of the arc, somehow Ohmori and Takahashi seem to think that Thouser is just an antagonist, but not an actual "villain". That's certainly the main reason all characters are so passive towards him, the creators of the series don't think he's an actual "villain" that should be stopped/punished by a Rider just a rival who has different views on AI compared to Aruto. I just don't get how they tie him to a terrorist organization and think that the audience won't consider him an outright villain. Regarding Gaim, it actually reminds me more of Gaim's ending, when Sagara leaving to attack other worlds was meant to be seen as something neutral, rather than a villain being just allowed to get away without Kouta even attempting to do anything. There's just a weird gap between the perception of the authors and what they actually write sometimes. Edit: Source of the interview (it's in Japanese though).

That has been going on since the 80s with the quarry they loved using for fighting scenes. In some late 80s series it feels like at any time someone was thrown through a wall or window or just blown into the air they landed there. Currently, there are some city locations they've been reusing since the early 00s. It's something old enough the Climax Heroes fighting games that came around the time of Decade/W already had noticed. They used several of those repeated locations as inspiration for the stages and several of those locations still pop up nowadays, while some other new ones have been added to the rotation, like the square where the Genesis Riders debuted in Gaim died which appeared in Zero-One right in the beginning of the Thouser arc. Hibiki attempted to go for more varied locations, but the cost of the location shooting ended up being the main reason its original producer was fired (since he refused to cut down on it in spite of the show doing badly). Really, I think only 70s toku really had a big variety of locations, like how the original Rider and Skyrider had episodes taking place not just in Tokyo, but in various tourist spots around Japan. That still continued in the 80s and 90s, but to a lesser extent, and pretty much disappeared during the 00s outside of the Toei edo village (which is in Kyoto).

At least to me, the issue is that rather than showing Thouser using his resources to deal with everyone, this arc just makes everyone oddly passive so he doesn't even need to do that. He gets to beat up a cop, a company president, destroy evidence in front of cameras, create a terrorist organization and carry around things made by the terrorists and everyone is just mildly annoyed by all that (or only furious for a single scene and then back to normal afterwards) and keeps treating him like he was just an unscrupulous company executive rather than a criminal. It'd be like if after Kuroto's identity and ties to the bugster virus was revealed in Ex-Aid he got to just walk back and continue as Genm Corp's president, rather than hiding as a fugitive. I felt like this about Masamune too to an extent, but he actually got more excuses in the show itself, and his arc where he was treated as just a company president is already smaller than Thouser's (32-40) since afterwards the cast was actually going after him actively.

As far as the issue of no adaptations go, there was nothing to adapt after Black RX until after Ishinomori had died. They even used J and ZO footage for Masked Rider too (although attempting to hide their suits for some dumb reason, rather than incorporating them as form changes). Considering how Ishinomori even gave his blessings to a non-licensed parody (something that irritated Toei's producers back in the late 80s), he doesn't seem to be the type to hold a grudge over something not following his "true vision".

I'm actually loving Kitaro, so I'm kind of happy about this. I'd take more weekly Super anime too, but that certainly will come in the near future, while after Kitaro ends it might take another 10 years for a new season and it might not be anything like the current one, which has become something fairly unique.

Thread Dragalia Lost |OT2| Boom.
We have no info about it at all. We might not even get the info regarding the banner on October. With the FE event we only got the info right before the event's launch, with the first video showcasing the event only confirming Alfonse as playable. It showed the other characters (including Loki) but didn't make it clear if they were actually appearing outside of story scenes.

Between MK9 and 11? Basically all dead MK9 characters became revenant slaves of Quan Chi, but some were saved and brought back to life during a battle between Raiden and Quan Chi, like Sub-Zero, which is how Sub-Zero ended up back as a human. Others remained as evil revenants though (like future Liu Kang). MK11 itself has a time travel premise though, so you've got past and future versions of many characters.

There's also PunchOut's Boxing Ring at least, although I can't remember if there are any others. The classification of the stage as Fatal Fury based is kind of weird too though, especially considering the heavy number of KoF cameos specifically (and only characters who were in KoF, even if they originated from other series, it's not like we got Samurai Shodown or Metal Slug cameos there). The only thing that makes it really Fatal Fury based is how the tournament's name there is spelled "King of Fighters" rather than "The King of Fighters".I don't think the graphics were that simplistic. The FE coliseum in Smash clearly uses elements mostly from the more recent arenas, rather than the older ones, even if it's not really identical to any actual FE arena either. The one in Smash is nothing like these two for example. But then when you look at more recent ones there are some clear similarities. And you can see from where this came from even if it's still an original design

I mean, it is Smash original considering how it isn't taken from any specific game, but just like the Coliseum from Fire Emblem they're clearly taking inspiration from existing elements of the games. Yeah, there's no KoF stadium in a football field, but both the 96 one and the XIV one have generic green grass fields around the fighting platform.
