I think if the intention were advertising we'd get more direct name and visual connections. Two random "Vier" namedrops with no further context and some lines from Umineko you'd only recognize if you read Umineko in the first place won't really advertise those series in a major way. I think this is more about his views of some characters changing while writing those other stories and that ends up reflected in Higurashi itself when going back to it.

"Everything is canon!", which doesn't actually mean that. It varies a lot from character to character. In general both Post-Crisis and New52 continuity are valid, in spite of being heavily contradictory at points, with the New52 origins generally thrown out. Batman and Wonder Woman's histories are treated as fully canon, going back to the Golden Age, meanwhile Superman has all the post-Crisis continuity and some New52/Rebirth elements, but older elements from Silver or Golden ages are limited to minor references here and there. Then you have Shazam, who is still almost purely New52.

Regarding Satoko, she generally was the least popular main cast member in Japan, which is probably why they had courage to do something so extreme with her that basically changes the entire focus of her character (and it seems to have worked popularity-wise). I'm looking forward to how the manga handles her transition though since so far it has been better in using elements of the original that aren't relevant to Gou/Sotsu's plot just for consistency. The director outright talked about using over the top violence to diminish its impact, making it more like a joke. So, yes, it was on purpose, although the "purpose" itself seems kind of misguided. I guess it might be because the violence is often against minors? Rina's death was one of the few that seemed to be played completely straight. Although Teppei's death still was a joke...I'm starting to think that maybe R07's outline didn't have actual arc by arc answer arcs, just a quick overview of what Satoko did, and then the anime staff decided to expand that into answer arcs, but completely failed to do anything with that expansion. That would explain why the arcs oddly barely seem to fill in Gou's original elements, and don't even really give much character development to Satoko, aside from slowly introducing the witch elements. The actual answers often being simplistic or just outright skipped. If I'm right about this at least it'd meant the manga would have a lot of potential to do better answers, since it wouldn't be tied to the oddities of the anime. Some quotes about the writing process of Gou/Sotsu He mentions that the plot originally wasn't designed with animation in mind, before going through the anime staff, but the whole structure of Sotsu seems designed to have been written to be able to reuse animation from Gou...

What I'm speculating is that he wrote the answers to be given in a quick run through, rather than writing summaries for 3 Answer arcs, which is why they were so lacking in detail and vague often during important moments. Then the anime team while splitting the arcs and structuring the episodes thought they could turn them into actual standalone arcs by filling in the details and using reused footage. He specifically talked about not writing with animation in mind, so it seems unlikely to me he'd write arcs that exist in large part with reused footage in mind.Even from Onidamashi, which came out alongside the anime, the manga was handling the transition from the original Higurashi better than the anime though (Hanyuu explained why she left Rika after Matsuri, something that was directly mentioned in the anime only now in Sotsu but even then they didn't give her reasons for doing that in the anime).

(73552636)

Thread Higurashi Gou/Sotsu Anime |OT| Welcome to Hinamizawa...again
I think Hanyuu's situation might still have a pay off, although it seems like it will be just a plot mechanic (explaining why the "lingering scent" Hanyuu and Eua exist at the same time, since this episode cofirmed they're the same being somehow) rather than related to her character at all, which does make her not acting exactly like the original Hanyuu kind of weird since that's effectively who she represents. So, there's really no point to her character being slightly off. No Satoko point of view once she seemingly accomplishes her goal was a really weird choice though. I guess they might be saving all characterization for when Rika and Satoko confront each other? But then that just makes the existence of this answer arc structure even more baffling if it couldn't even actually give answers to the viewers during the recap parts (that took half of the arc...).

Items that in the show are used for big attacks never get showcased like that in the commercials. If they don't even push the action angle of the series, in spite of the tv show marketing itself, there's no way they'd push for an action game. They only did an action focused Cure game back for the original series when the marketing focus was very different.

Saikoroshi being canon is really stupid. It basically means Rika learned nothing from it and her speculation about Bernkastel existing in a higher planet now was just chuuni rambling. It's also overall really odd with the idea of Rika wanting to escape from Hinamizawa because if that were an issue back then you'd think she'd just have stayed in the other world, where Hinamizawa would be buried in one year. I guess it has to remain in continuity though if Rika isn't killing anyone, considering Bernkastel's line about eating flesh, which is generally taken to be a reference to killing her mother in Saikoroshi.I'd at least have liked some kind of explanation for the Keiichi scenario. The timing and his actions there are just very weird. It'd probably come down to her telling him something before an off-screen injection though, like what they did with Akasaka.

Unless movies using videogames as source material start rising, I think nowadays it'd be harder to create a new "style" that gets mimicked by other movies which also end up successful. We've seen that even with Marvel's clear "formula" for their movies other studios have trouble following them consistently.

There were a couple of hints that the scene wasn't reliable in the anime, like Teppei not being mentioned in the aftermath and the way Satoko was completely covered in blood in episode 13 during the Teppei battle not matching the blood on her in episode 14. Rena doesn't outright say Oishi killed Satoko either, she just says Oishi came with a gun then everyone was killed and what she saw didn't make sense, which was probably meant to hint at the Satoko scene. Although the way the scene flowed, you could think she was just referencing everyone dying rather than the way they died. The manga's version of Rena's break down was fairer in comparison (although the manga also had no Teppei/Keiichi illusion, Keiichi is just attacked by Oishi during the festival but survives unlike the others).

Characters in Umineko can go in out of the gameboard/fragment at will. And in several previous scenes of Sotsu showing Satoko talking with Eua there was a fragment showing the current scene from the story, although some people wanted to dismiss those as just similar looking old fragments that happen to be showing that one specific scene and claiming those scenes must have been flashbacks, rather than Satoko being able to "pause" the story like Umineko characters. This newest episode certainly showed the Umineko-style mechanic in action though. As for the battle, going by the dialogue, it's both in a way. Eua talks about eliminating those "emotions" (regret, presumably) when Witch Satoko shoots Satoko, which makes it sound like they weren't entirely separate personalities, just aspects of a single person. However, during the battle itself Witch Satoko does claim the old Satoko there was "leavings from old fragments", so that would be the in-universe explanation for the duel. Satoko's small regret combined with those fragments brought forth that old version of herself which temporarily stopped her from killing Teppei before getting eliminated.

I really doubt that will be addressed even if we get a more direct confirmation of a Satoko/Lambda connection. In the main VN itself, all quotes that reference Lambda being behind Bern's tragedy work even more directly if they're actually about Satoko being behind Gou/Sotsu, rather than the original loops. Like how it was described as a "Contest of Endurance" and the same term was used in Gou to describe the upcoming Satoko vs Rika game; Bern saying that someone troublesome took a liking to Battler, and something similar happened to her when she was a human or the description about Bern being tortured by a witch in a labyrinth of despair. Everything there could apply to the original Higurashi in a way, but they fit Gou/Sotsu much more directly., then we have Memoirs of Lambdadelta, originally published for an event in 2008 and then later republished in VN format as part of Umineko Tsubasa. This one is where it's outright said Lambda blessed a girl who wished to become god, with many quotes taken directly from Takano's speech about her certain will when she decides to study to take over her grandpa's research near the end of her backstory in Matsuri. And it's said that although the girl failed in the end her actions led to the birth of a new witch. This all seems like an obvious attempt to reference Higurashi within Umineko's context. It could be a timeloop, which would preserve the meaning of the references (and R07 has referenced Tezuka's Phoenix as an example of the type of connections his series have, and Phoenix featured a similar recursive timeloop tying two of its stories together), but it also could just be something from an unrelated fragment, like when the adult looking Bernkastel at the end of Higurashi stops the death of Takano's parents. That obviously didn't change Rika's own world, it just created a separate one. Of course, this would weaken the obvious intended references. I think the 2nd option isn't unlikely though. Gou/Sotsu themselves are shoving aside Higurashi's own Saikoroshi. It either didn't happen now, or happened but lost any meaning. In Saikoroshi, had Rika promised to leave her witch personality in the past, accept her next death, look at her current world as the one world, treating the other worlds she experienced as dreams, and speculated that her witch-self might still exist in a higher realm separate from her. This has been outright said to have been a Bernkastel origin story by R07 in interviews, and it was clearly the implication with Rika's random speculation about her other self still existing in a higher realm, but Gou/Sotsu are basically ignoring all that. Rika in Gou/Sotsu is driven by her experiences in previous worlds, never being able to leave the trauma from them behind, and clearly still had a witch personality within her (the red eyes scenes). So, if Saikoroshi is still meant to have happened, Rika didn't actually take any lesson from it and her speculation about her witch self was just meaningless speculation.

So, Satoko lying on the floor, but without a crushed head was supposed to be a hint she was actually alive. Regarding Rena attacking Keiichi, that was just about the Gou arc. In the original series, the correct answer was that Rena trying to kill Keiichi. Keiichi was delirious by the end. He was the one succumbing to the syndrome and due to that saw Rena and Mion being much more sinister than they actually were, alongside seeing complete illusions a few times (the needle in the food, or the scene where Mion and Rena hold him, where it was meant to be a prank where they'd write on his shirt, but he saw it as them holding a syringe). This was revealed in the final story of the original season (if you go by the anime) or 2nd arc of Kai for the VN. As far as Rina goes, the scenario where she appears and ends up killed by Rena could happen naturally too, without Satoko's intervention (yet again, it happens in the final story of season 1). Although that Rina was working alongside Teppei and was a worse person in general, attempting to attack Rena herself before she was killed, rather than talking with Rena about telling her father to stop seeking her. That scenario doesn't happen everytime though. In many worlds Rina ends up killed by the Sonozaki after trying to steal from them (this is what leads to Teppei's return to Hinamizawa in the old series). Everyone in Hinamizawa is technically infected by the syndrome, but it only progresses if the character is under tension, leading to paranoia. In the original story for example, Keiichi's starts to progress because he leaves Hinamziwa for a while to visit a funeral, hearing Hanyuu's voice there somehow. Then returning to Hinamizawa he learned about the crimes during Watanagashi, but all his friends tried to hide them from him, which made him start suspecting them, escalating from there. In Gou, it was suggested the syndrome weakened without Hanyuu around, which is why all the killings now seem to be artificially caused by Satoko injecting them directly.

They've made some mistakes with her progression, but I think you're missing what these recent episodes are doing. That said, I think they really messed up the beginning of her progression as a looper. All those flashy suicides in Gou and she talks about finding a quick way to die, using a gun? It really feels like they wanted flashy psychotic looper Satoko from point zero even though it clashed with the story outline. Due to the lack of monologues they also really failed to push the idea that she had changed in core ways after the 100 years, even though that was clearly the intention when you look at some of the specific moments, like the first red eyes scene.

The world is already better for her though. This episode pretty much confirmed what I was speculating about before when we got the first episode of Wataakashi - Satoko is apparently the game itself. Eua directly spells it out at the end of the episode while talking about how she isn't even human anymore. At this point, Satoko feels happiness from causing tragedies. All those smirks and laughs aren't just random villain imagery, she's genuinely enjoying all this. I think at this point the only way internal conflict within Satoko would make sense is if she starts failing to synchronize/possess herself. Back in the original VN, in Minagoroshi, it was stated Rika's soul was changing and if it actually became inhuman, she wouldn't be able to loop anymore. Although obviously Satoko can't be stopped from looping, otherwise the plot would break, maybe we'll get a situation where Satoko starts failing to completely overwrite the Satokos from individual fragments, and this causes some conflict within her, since she then realizes she basically isn't "Satoko" anymore.

As far as Bern goes, I thought Nekodamashi was building to that. The issue is that with Gou's/Sotsu's format all of that has been shelved for months. Neko has Rika questioning what was the point of her miraculous victory, and being unable to accept a "perfect world" and going towards the truth since she was just unnerved by it, which lines up with Bern disregarding soft illusions while going after a cruel truth. It also introduced the idea of Rika disliking Hinamizawa and wanting to move away from her past due to trauma from looping, resembling in a ligther way how Bern doesn't even like even talking about her origins due to the pain she suffered there. Higurashi spin-offs and non-Higurashi series by Ryukishi had already shown more variable fragments though. Mei had Hanyuu giving a speech about the nature of fragments and how they could be any kind of story when they introduced an odd sci-fi event (coincidentally, "Rika Furude" didn't exist in that world according to the historical data when the cast researched it, although it obviously has nothing to do with the current Sotsu plot). This plot follows a "game" format in a more direct way than the game metaphors of the original Higurashi. It had already been stated that Satoko couldn't die before Rika during Oniakashi, we just didn't really get the full consequences of that up until now. Satoko knew about this condition from the start. This all goes back to the show for whatever reason skipping the point where the "game" started (high school Rika getting brought to the new loops). Here, they animated that scene which was skipped in the original DEEN anime, but with Satoko doing it all by herself and on everyone's faces, without hiding anything. I don't get if it's supposed to have some kind of point or if it's just a way to get through it quickly. Of course, it only really works because Chie isn't there at all. What's surprising from this chapter is that she's blaming her deaths/sudden syndrome outbursts on Takano, rather than suspecting something completely different is going on. Really, I think this is the kind of story that can only be born from a writer doing a outline, and rather than actually writing out the full story. "Fragments" can be basically any kind of world, not just variations of Rika's life. So it's not odd that there would be fragments without Rika. But... Comes Oniakashi we got no reaction at all from her to that. So, this Gou chapter goes right alongside that too. It's a baffling writing oversight though. Two days go on with a closed Irie clinic and we get no reaction from Rika. There is a fan edit adding the Onidamashi scenes skipped by Oniakashi back in, making it a single large story. That actually really helps with the flow of the final part of Oniakashi that ended up rushed in the actual episode. It almost feels like the show was made to be watched like that. Now the same person made a version of Wataakashi with Watadamashi's missing scenes, but this one doesn't flow nearly as well. There are several continuity mishaps between them when placing the scenes like that - like the beginning of the festival (there are two different scenes where they talk like they're first arriving, although in the Wataakashi one they're also searching for Satoko and Rika, while they immediately find them in the Watadamashi one). Looking back there are even continuity mistakes in Wataakashi by itself. Mion is wearing her school uniform when she meets Keiichi in the waterwheel after calling him to her home since it's a recycled Watadamashi scene, but then when they arrive there she's already in the leader outfit (which she was wearing in previous Akashi scenes). I initially thought it was fault of mixing together Watadamashi and Wataakashi, but rewatching the wataakashi episode that was all there by itself.

I'd guess the syringe scene will be something similar. Later on we'll get the "surprising" reveal that she's actually mixing it with drinks. What annoyed me this episode is that Shion just happened to apparently act like the beginning of her L5 self from Meakashi due to a series of coincidences (like how dragging Keiichi to the shrine seems like a complete whim here, and the call was entirely genuine and yet almost identical to her acting from Mea) with her comment from Watadamashi about being unable to forgive her sister for a few things not even being acknowledged in this side of the story. Considering how she crumbles when Mion confronts her it's clear she isn't meant to be going L5 at all. Everything would have worked out much better if she had been more aggressive in that scene.

This part about manga vs anime starts getting odd because we just don't have much info about the manga's plotting. We know it was closer to R07's original outline regarding Onidamashi's conclusion, but only because R07 specifically talked about how the anime staff moved the Hanyuu scene from the end of Onidamashi to episode 2 in order to have an earlier hook for returning viewers. So, regarding the other differences it's hard to say what would be closer to the plot. I mentioned the oddity regarding the length of the loops though just because, in the anime itself, Rika describes both loops in similar terms, rather than saying that the original was a long nightmare but with shiny spots, while Gou was a shorter but much more intense one. She describes both as very, very long dreams. That line just stands out in an odd way considering everything else in the anime, while in the manga by showing that multitude of loops, rather than focusing on a few specific ones, that line would fit better (even if it'd require a stupidly big amount of loops) - although, of course, the manga hasn't gotten to that point yet, so there is still a chance the line won't even be there. However, I just remembered R07 referenced it as an "Endless Loop game" in that interview that happened after Gou ep21.which of course sounds odd with the specific anime count, but works out better if there are more loops beyond the ones actually shown.

Satoko's failure is probably meant to be seen like Keiichi's backstory, when she loses her motivation she just can't apply herself to it. St.Lucia is an environment that she dislikes and without Rika hanging out with her she had basically no incentive to even improve her grades. It's not like they were close even while they were in the same class (although this happened due to Satoko wanting to give her "space" while also believing Rika would get tired of St.Lucia and want to drop out). As soon as she became a looper, Satoko's main interest was "testing" Rika (since she believes Rika was the one who told the school she was behind the trap that hit one of the girls) rather than actually attempting to improve herself there. Note that in that first loop Rika outright accuses Satoko of putting herself in the position of victim. In Gou itself, Eua associated Satoko with Vier, who is a genius in Ciconia. Overall though, not only in the recent Gou/Sotsu developments, even spin-off material is pushing Satoko from the start as someone very smart (like in Mei's Steins Gate collab she studies under Okabe to incorporate electronic equipment into her traps - although this whole timeline ends up erased). I think the lack of monologues really hurt the St.Lucia story though, since there are many timeskips there, so monologues would be pretty much necessary to tie things together. I'm really interested to see what the manga will do with it since it doesn't fear monologues like the anime does.Huh? Eua clearly welcomes Satoko when she first appears in the sea of fragments. She doesn't seem surprised at all. And like I said, when Satoko is near the shrine she sees/senses purple waves, which is she goes towards it, and once getting inside there are more waves that draw her towards the statue. It's clear Eua was the one initiating contact, not just some coincidence. The shrine itself was unlocked and empty too, which is a pretty unusual state.

The "Frederica Bernkastel" name should have been explained in Higurashi Rei, but the anime completely skipped the two important scenes related to it for some reason, even though it left a single name drop that ends up completely out of context. In addition to the VN itself, the manga also has those scenes though.

I just remembered that Watadamashi was the one arc that didn't have a script written by Naoki Hayashi. Aside from the pacing due to basically only actually having two episodes, it feels like Naoki just didn't actually care to explain any of the red herrings left by Kawaguchi (who is the director, but specifically wrote Watadamashi's script). Shion mentioning she has unresolved issues with Mion in Watadamashi? Never brought up in Wataakashi. Shion takes Keiichi to the shrine even though she apparently isn't moved by Satoshi's murder here because... No reason given. Keiichi was the last person to return to the school building after the break (why?) and somehow misses Rika's body which was apparently left lying somewhere outside by this point... Satoko asks Keiichi about what happened to Rika even though she knows Mion is the infected... Aside from Shion taking Keiichi to the shrine, all those moments were anime-only too. Of course, even Mion's L5 characterization was handled in a very superficial way.She didn't just pull the gun, she also dropped the bottle, which only fell after her shot. It was like they just cut a scene. It also could double as an explanation for the injections (previously I thought the explanation would be mixing H173 with drinks, but now I'm wondering if everything won't come down to a single reveal later on).Sotsu so far has been a glorified recap of Gou. The new scenes often look good, but both arcs now ended up in episodes with really bad pacing due to rushing through a lot of Gou content.

Tarble was referenced in the BoGs movie and Broly movie. Toriyama heavily changed the script of BoGs and wrote all of Broly. Battle of Gods is kind of a mess in general nowadays. The Beerus power comments from the movie clearly don't work well, but the tv show has its own problems, in spite of adding that line at the end about how Beerus was just pretending to be tired, like cutting the Pillaf crew bonding with Trunks, (only for them to be living there out of nowhere by the time of the Future Trunks Saga) or all the stuff about Super Saiyan absorbing the power of Super Saiyan God and becoming just as strong as that form, which clearly was dropped later with Super Saiyan God still being stronger (while in the original movie although Super Saiyan powered up due to the God power, at the climax Goku briefly goes God again and it's clearly treated as a power up over Super Saiyan).

The suits are the one bit about Ex-Aid I never could get used to. I dislike the spandex with those lines mimicking shorts and dislike the overall head designs of most suits. I still enjoyed the show though and like some of the later designs. Also, In Ex-Aid's case, you really need to watch the Another Ending trilogy after the tv show. It really feels like the show's final arc left out story content just for that (well, at least the 2nd and 3rd movies, the first one is rather unnecessary).

The ones that take place during the show are pretty good. Heisei Generations Final happens fairly early though, so there are some oddities with Banjo's characterization, and it's also a crossover with Ex-Aid, OOO, Fourze and Gaim, heavily spoiling the endings of Ex-Aid, OOO and Gaim. The solo Build movie is pretty much a conclusion for the daddy issues arc, and that part it does well, although the villains themselves are oddly downplayed The post-series movies are more controversial. I wasn't fond of the Cross-Z one and what it does with Build's ending (Heisei Generations Forever, which is more of a Zi-O movie featuring Build's characters feels like a better follow up to Build's finale), but the Grease one (which actually heavily features the entire cast) was a good conclusion coming from Cross-Z's set up.

I remember some comments disliking how there wasn't much going on with Hikaru and wishing there were more space travel episodes. Although overall it was one of my favorite Cure series among the last few. I think the main problem is that it came right after Hugtto, which was generally well regarded too and dealt with themes that Cure usually doesn't touch, making Star Twinkle's own themes appear not very unique in comparison even though they'd stand out in any other context.I think Ryuki's main issue is that there was a core cast of Riders (Ryuki, Knight, Zolda, Ouja) and everyone else was limited to their own arcs, so after a while it becomes obvious the show wouldn't touch any of the core four before the final arc, and extra Riders were just around to die. It doesn't help when the show goes through many episodes without extra Riders too, it's obvious nothing will come out of the Rider battles in those.

Amanozako's design notes actually mention how her being an ancestor to the Tengu and Amanojaku is questionable. I thought that could be a good excuse for the young looking design, but wasn't sure if they'd even mention it after some of the design decisions back in Apocalypse and SJ Redux. She was designed with the idea of having a presence as a memorable early game demon like pixie from Nocturne, basically a "Japanese pixie". Overall, the idea seem to be her being represented as an artificial being created by Susano, although they're apparently keeping part of her concept a secret for now, probably story spoilers. Her initial design had an orange skin and an ugly face, but they changed it to the current cute one to create a contrast between her appearance and Amanojaku-like character.

The problem with SMT4's routes aren't the endings, but the lead up to them. Once you get into a route, you basically get no story events related to your enemies anymore. Law route has the npcs in the underground lairs talking about an even bigger demon invasion and how it's just a matter of time until they fall, and maybe even Mikado, but nothing about that is really acknowledged in the main story scenes. You just walk over defeat some demons that are just waiting for you seemingly without doing anything and then kill the final boss. It doesn't show how the final boss appeared or allows that character to do anything, which makes the confrontation with them all fairly underwhelming. Neutral route is obviously the longest and most elaborate, but once you're actually done with the preparations that come before the final battle with all the side-quests, then the two final battles still end up the same as before. They're just there waiting for the player with no real build up.

However, he goes on to say she did pick a girl during puberty at the time she was most vulnerable emotionally and pushed her in a way she knew would cause a tragedy. So, everything goes back to her. There obviously will be some conflict, but by the end Rika most likely won't hold everything against her. Either way, Satoko already acting like the people she kills don't count. She gives a whole speech in the Gou finale about it and her actions in Sotsu line up with that.

I don't think we'll get the actual names or complete designs used here - The Bernkastel name originated in Higurashi itself, and yet it hasn't been mentioned at all in Gou. And then we have Eua, who is obviously Featherine, wearing the medal that's supposed to be proof of her identity and yet she wasn't called Featherine. However, I do think we'll end up with a pair of obvious Bern and Lambda lookalikes in the Sea of Fragments by the end. There's a suspicious datamined voice for a Rika variation in Mei (the mobile game) who sounds oddly Bernkastel-like, although not quite there. She sounds more lively than the Umineko one, but only uses Rika's adult voice, talks about traveling between worlds, escaping from boredom, treats her enemies as insects and outright mentions the "power of a witch".Rika and Hanyuu actually straight up have a small cameo in the Umineko manga(Episode 3 specifically), with no shadowing or anything. It's a comedic scene, but it's a visual adaptation of a comment from the Umineko VN, not an extra page or something.Battler references it as a novel, Lambda references "Higurashi" as a videogame she hadn't finished yet, so those references aren't even internally consistent within Umineko itself. I see those closer to when Keiichi suddenly references the PS3 and X-Box 360 even though Higurashi takes place in the 80s. Within Higurashi itself, Higurashi is the name of a book written by Akasaka and Ooishi after the GHD.

He just stopped appearing for a while, and then there was the reboot that erased him even retroactively. Bringing him back was the core of the "Rebirth" one-shot. However, afterwards he was mostly limited to appearances in Titans and some very small guest spots until he started getting bigger appearances leading to Heroes in Crisis. Heroes in Crisis was the first time he was involved in a big story after his return, but it was just to completely trash him as an hero (which isn't surprising since the same people who removed him before the New52 were still in charge...).

UltraSeven was meant to be completely standalone originally. Return of Ultraman brought it and the original Ultraman to the same continuity though, acting like they were in the same world all along. Starting from there, all the shows up to 80 are in this continuity. Then there's Tiga and Dyna sharing a new continuity in the 90s. After that, most shows are standalone for a few years. However, Ultraman Mebius goes back to the original continuity, ignoring all later series. Ultra Galaxy Legends then basically starts the current continuity. It's the far future of the original continuity, and the "Land of Light" from where the M78 Ultras come from is always the same, based on the stats quo introduced here, but the Ultramen from various past continuities and their monsters now travel around the multiverse, not just space. Each show that started after it generally feature a new universe with a new Earth, but the Ultras from the original continuity's Land of Light then eventually appear there at some point, either the new main Ultra from M78 or related locations somehow ends up in the new parallel Earth or the M78 Ultra is a guest character who teams up with the new Ultra who is native to the new universe at some point.

Well, the toys aren't completely confirmed yet although the shark with bar codes and Decade's colors would be a huge coincidence. But, yeah, if the rumors pan out it sounds closer to Zi-O than to Fourze. Part of it is that Bandai wasn't confident legend Rider items would even sell back when Fourze came out. The intial expectations for Zi-O had it falling bellow Ex-Aid levels, and then even after Zi-O's success (highest sales in the entire franchise), they seemed to think Zero-One could do even better in spite of the lack of Legend Rider stuff in the show - it obviously didn't. So using the 50th anniversary as an excuse to go for legend Riders again seems possible now that it's proven it is a selling factor that's hard to replicate. Personally, I'm hoping for it but don't want to get excited by the idea since it's still all in the realm of speculation. Both Decade and Zi-O were done under Shirakura who has very particular views on the franchise and crossovers, views that limit any kind of crossover done under him. I'd love a crossover season headed by someone else that actually attempts to have a consistent setting and premise in addition to past heroes, rather than just the theme park structure of Shirakura's crossovers, where he doesn't even try to make the arcs feel like they could belong in the same world since he doesn't believe Riders being in the same world works in the first place.

The new background also is consistent between different angles. There is one other oddity within the scene though, the shot with Satoko standing next to the window happens while in the original Satoko was already next to the group. This stands out because otherwise they always match the original movements even in fully new shots.I'm getting more and more hopeful for a "this is a new fragment" twist next episode. When done at its best, I prefer episodic. Basically each episode feels like a standalone story of its own, with a lot of variability from one episode to another. However, most of the time, that isn't what happens in episodic shows and they end up falling to formulas, rather than using the episodic structure for freedom. What? AW 1 and 2 were for the GBA. Then there were two more games for the DS, a sequel and a reboot. The 3DS had no AW games. Anyway, the Famicom Wars series from the start was developed by Intelligent Systems. It was never handled fully in-house by Nintendo. The point is that outsourcing a series to a completely different developer can end up changing it greatly (just look at Mario Party when it changed developers), which is probably why they got WayForward to just recreate AW1 and 2 with 3d graphics rather than do their own thing with it.

It's outsourced and it's very easy to mess up with game balance in something like this, so they apparently just got the new developers to stick to the original game design. Also, AW is specifically an Intelligent Systems game, not just "Nintendo", but it's clear IS aren't interested in pushing the series, probably because it completely lost any relevancy in Japan (compare with Fire Emblem, which they always attempted to keep in production even during its weaker phases).

FE characters appear in the role of demons/Persona (each one bonds with a party member rather than fighting directly so they're closer to Persona in that sense). There's no fusion mechanic, each character has a "Mirage" associated with them and you need to gather drops from beating enemy mirages to make weapons for them. However, the weapons are associated with different skills, so collecting them kind of replaces collecting demons.

Still, in some cases I prefer this to the actual "solid" monster armor, like how Shadowmoon's armor originally stretched with his movement, but the modern one doesn't, and it looks completely solid... but then the pieces can look rather loose during action scenes.

The characters really didn't need to play up their main characteristics in throw away dialogue/expressions for flavor/humor, when the script by itself already suffered from overusing some of those characteristics. That just helped making the conversations more monotonous rather than actually adding flavor when you actually read multiple conversations rather than just one or two. Then there was cutting the different personality choices for the avatar, effectively removing the only story-related aspect of Corrin as an avatar outside of pairings. And in spite of all that the main story dialogue also still often fell to bland (and often goofy) exposition. Granted, this is due to the original script, but it just shows the localization didn't help.

You'll always want to use weapons from the strongest type you have access to (Hero > Brave > Silver > Steel > Iron > Bronze, the stars just increase their power within the same level, so a 5 star bronze is still weaker than iron with no stars). The power difference is too big to make up for it with skills. As far as the personal weapons go, later on you unlock skills which allow you to increase their power to the level of brave weapons after defeating a certain number of enemies, and if you have the DLC they can go even further beyond, becoming stronger than even the Hero weapons).

FE3 lacks many of the features added by later games, so it's very basic. It does have most of the core of the series already though, aside from the weapon triangle (unlike FE1 which has many gameplay oddities) and a fairly unique feature that was mostly forgotten afterwards (mounted units can dismount, changing from lances to swords, and to dismount for indoor maps). Compared to FE7, it still has villages, shops, arena, the intermission where you can swap equipment before battles... So a lot of the game would be familiar, but it's missing elements like battle sprites following the color pallet of the portraits, supports (there are some built-in character relationship boosts, but no support conversations), characters who still appear in story scenes after joining your party (they all basically disappear once joining as playable units outside of Sheeda/Caeda participating in many recruitment conversations), alternate objectives are also kind of missing, but not really (you need to conquer a throne/keep to finish almost every chapter, but many chapters especially in book 2 incorporate design elements that basically force alternate objectives, especially if you want all to get all characters and the real ending). FE4 introduced the weapon triangle, skills and generally has all around better graphics than FE3 alongside faster and more dynamic battle animations. There's also a core cast that actually keeps story presence unlike FE3. You can pair up characters like in FE7 (but only for romance) and some get conversations, although only for specific pairings. However, it has some odd design choices, like characters being unable to give items to each other. You need to resell them to a store and buy them with another character, since each one has their own funds. Some people dislike the basic premise of Conquest's story - basically siding with the "evil" side of a war just because the family the main character grew up with is there, while attempting to keep their own hands clean, but not actually stopping evil atrocities from happening. On top of that though, a big part of the later plot of the game is entirely reliant on clumsily implemented plot devices rather than natural development. I actually like the basic premise, but the execution is just stupidly done at various points (although I think some script edits could fix many of the issues, which frustrates me due to them changing supports and some light-hearted story dialogue quite a bit in the localization but largely avoiding actual story plot points).

Yep, you skipped the character endings.Conquest has much more challenging gameplay with enemies with unique skill sets up and more unique map gimmicks/objectives (there's even actual gameplay reasons to use captured units here if you're playing on hard or lunatic). If you don't think the gameplay is really a selling point though the story is weak. Revelation was the original "grand finale" (although it's not even that anymore since Heirs of Fates is clearly the final ending, although it's not a standard campaign, since you use preset characters), but it's kind of a mess both story and gameplay-wise.

Recruiting Haitaka and using him afterwards to great effect was pretty memorable. Well, I guess wouldn't work well in an academy setting, but I'm pretty sure that will be changed into a general military commander structure later.

It's pretty clear the Revelation rote was rushed for whatever reason, and in spite of some obvious changes the game could have gotten it was never patched. The main issue is that although the Birthright and neutral characters were often rebalanced, even if sometimes badly, the Conquest exclusive ones mostly come with the same stats they join with in Conquest (or just their original stats for Gunter), in spite of having completely different joining times in Revelation.

Most characters are actually rather weak if you look only at growth rates and starting stats, but they're generally all usable due to how the promotion system works (It gives a boost to all of their stats to a new base level rather than giving fixed boosts to all stats - that's also why aside from the lords you'll likely want to promote as soon as possible). Clive is a specially weak character though. He starts average and then just drops from there. He can still remain useful through the boosts from the promotion system, but he'll be weaker than any of the other cavaliers. There's also "Atlas", a villager you get in Celica's route. He has high hp and attack power, but low everything else. You can change him into a mercenary to fix his speed issues, although he still won't be doubling much later on, or you can go with making him an archer, since the only other archer available in Celica's army is just as slow and much weaker in exchange for defensive stats.

Azura has stupid moments even outside of the curse, like misusing the crystal ball to reveal Garon's identity just to Corrin or getting frightened for real and complaining to Corrin when they attempt to fake being evil to have less opposition within Nohr, saying she can't lose her purity. There's also the path split in Revelations when she suggests they should take out captains of both armies to get their attention and is seemingly surprised when they only managed to turn everyone against them. She's meant to be mature and decisive, but the main story writing several times makes her look dumb. At least Corin being dumb is just part of their character, with Azura that goes directly against the image they wanted to give her.

He was just generically heroic in the original games. Shadow Dragon pushes the idea that Marth puts on a tough and charismatic front for the people but opens up to Nina and Jeigan, showing his weakness. The issue is that due to him basically only interacting with Nina throughout the story, outside of about two scenes and recruitment conversations, it really doesn't seem like he keeps anything to himself and he's often lamenting about the tragedy of war to Nina. The game really needed a larger cast with actual story roles to make that work. There's also that one scene where he talks about how he hates the enemies that attacked his homeland, but he has to put it behind him since they're just people too, although it's basically just one scene, rather than an actual running plotline. Then New Mystery has him as this idealistic lord that gathers people around him due to his purity and ideal image, and can get far due to the support of everyone around him, rather than personal strength and strong rule (the game compares him with Anri who was more based on personal strength). This characterization also seems to have been pushed from then on, which is why his upgrade in Heroes was support based. I'm not sure it was a good choice, especially when other lords are pushed as both incomparably strong and great leaders too.

I'd expect full 3d maps with map sprites, basically the current system. The battlefield itself has been fully 3d since Awakening though, but making the map sprites models again like in PoR/RD doesn't seem like a good choice because they'd need to be fairly low poly due to the number of units at once while also having exaggerated designs to make them distinctive from afar. Sprites just seem like a better choice that avoids all those issues. Well, unless they do something very drastic, like completely dumping the "square" system and giving characters area of movements. If they went for something like that I guess they'd likely also make everything 3d again.

I think this part mostly suffers due to Awakening's story becoming pretty minimalist after the first third of the game. With the reduced main story scenes, there was just no way Chrom ever would have gotten that kind of development even if Robin's importance didn't rise towards the ending. Robin still doesn't have the spotlight in the Valm arc, and yet all the issues with the reign of Chrom's father are already irrelevant here. Also, regarding that change of focus, we have Radiant Dawn where Micaiah goes from protagonist in the first part to meat suit for Yune in the final part while Ike takes over (in the multi-part final chapter Micaiah only actually speaks in battle dialogue, it's always Yune in the intermission scenes). Even more recently in Echoes we had Alm's take over of the narrative towards the ending just expanded further, rather than minimized. IS various writing teams just seem to be unable to really push equal protagonists.Robin is only really "worshiped" by the support system and Chrom's initial party, but every character is friendly with each other by the time of the A support in Awakening. Corrin gets a death threat from a party member right before the final chapter, and gets overruled by other characters several times on conquest. And in spite of their "love" for him we get moments like Takumi only joining in Revelation after Izana kills himself for that. I'm not disputing that they have two big families (I don't think any previous lord even had 4 siblings), but Corrin doesn't really carry the same presence that a character like (Radiant Dawn) Ike or Alm do. They're loved as a person, but their actions often seem to be questioned.

I do agree that the avatar shouldn't be plot relevant. That would even make it easier to customize them, like changing default class and even having some control over their backstory (something Kris had up to a point) or personality (although, like I mentioned above, I fear that the localization would be really trigger happy to cut this).I think what you're pointing out is more of an issue with Corrin's supports. They're mostly used to showcase other characters personalities or backstory (for the Corrin-only ones), doing little with Corrin him/herself aside from the ones that go into specific childhood events. In the main story though, Corrin is pretty active. Conquest Corrin isn't just loyal to her family, she puts that loyalty above siding with the ones she considered correct. She also avoids dirtying her own hands, but during most of the game does nothing to stop Nohr's atrocities performed by other people. That's basically a Camus character as the protagonist. And like I said above, the other routes push Corrin's purity to the point of naivety, which is a fairly generic flaw for an heroic character, but is rather dissonant for a player avatar.Xander expressed displeasure, but main story Xander would never go against Garon's orders anyway. In fact, later on he pushes Corrin forward when she hesitates and threatens to kill her if she's lying once she accuses Garon of being a monster. The invasion was happening Corrin, or no Corrin.

Corrin's basic character (noble living in isolation for most of his life) likely was set up to allow the game to introduce the world to him and the player at once, however, outside of that, I think he actually has too much character - at least in the main story. Look at the basic route split for example. In Conquest, Corrin acknowledges that Nohr is wrong too, but can't side against them because she loves the 4 royals as a family. That motivation already deviates from a player insert, since the player barely has any time to bond with them. Then you get Corrin attempting to prove herself to Garron, even though from the player's point of view (including scenes Corrin can't see but the player can) Garron is just setting up a big trap to Corrin. And these are all intentional deviations between the player's point of view and Corrin's, there are obviously unintentional ones later, like the throne stuff. You also get scenes like when Corrin starts playing evil once to satisfy Iago, but right afterwards you get Azura reprehending them saying they shouldn't lose their purity. That kind of scene just makes no sense for a player avatar. In Birthright and Revelation, in spite of turning against Garon from the start, leading to a more standard narrative, Corrin is still shown trusting characters that obviously aren't trustworthy to the player, which still causes dissonance. They also still push him as extremely idealistic, which although fairly generic, actually ends up a very strong element here. He isn't just fighting to protect his friends, unlike Robin or Alm, you get him spouting about bigger concepts, like his cheesy discussion about justice with Xander during their battle. Like I said before, I'd guess this all comes from the outline originating from someone who usually doesn't write for games.

The games have played around with a customizable personality for the avatar, it just has never made it out of Japan. Robin's was very limited, just changing his pronouns, but there was also the silent option that got eliminated too. Corrin's was more developed, with sentences sometimes rewritten to fit the different personality types, but yet again that got completely cut from the game (and almost insultingly they kept the menu there claiming personality differences in the voice options even though the actual script doesn't change at all). The problem here is if they haven't been willing to localize even the limited options we've gotten it doesn't make me optimistic that they'd localize a more expanded system.Yeah, just compare how they first modernized Alm in Awakening's DLC when he was just a one off character and how they handled him when they wanted to write him as the protagonist again. The first highlighted his conflict with Celica and aggressiveness, while in the second one he's made approachable and friendly, his conflict with Celica coming entirely from Celica's own character.I think that just plays into the amount of support dialogue in general. I could see a situation where the story is voiced but supports aren't, if we get a large group of universal supports again like in Awakening and Fates, aside from maybe whatever is the highest ranking. I guess if they dump the 2nd generation though, the number of conversations with all the extra character could get way too high. It makes me wonder how they'd handle that. Maybe characters from paralogues would get their own support group separate from the main story ones?

This might not actually be the case. The Trunks backstory chapter in the manga came fairly late into the Cell Saga, after it was established that the future androids were weaker than than past ones. However, in that chapter, right before killing Gohan, 17 reveals that they were just playing around all the time and weren't using even half of their power. Trunks seems to think he could keep up with the androids in one on one when he got as strong as Gohan, so it's very likely they were just toying with him too. Of course, this is all lost in the anime, where they have 17 needing to team up with 18 to kill Gohan. Either way, like mentioned above, Future Gohan wasn't the focus so there just wasn't much thought put into why he couldn't grow more than that.

One of his men then questions him if they aren't criminals too, but he gets told that they just do business, preparing planets for people who need them for a fee. Basically, they seem to be going all in with the Freeza = landshark metaphor. He's evil, but just part of the universe. As for why I think it's all Toriyama? Look at the early marketing for Super. Goten and Trunks were pushed as part of the main cast by Toei's promotional material. They also were heavily featured in Toei original episodes/additional scenes, even getting inserted into RoF and getting a multi-parter original story. But that all slowly faded throughout when it became more and more clear Toriyama had no interest in them for his actual stories. By the time of the ToP, they clearly gave up, getting much less presence in the new opening, little presence in marketing material and the anime itself showed them falling on their backs while kicking (basically, presenting them as completely unskilled fighters).

People already said this when the RoF movie came out though and yet it happened again with the ToP. It also happened with the Moro arc, although this time it's true we don't know if Toriyama had any involvement with the line up choice. It seems something rather active to me because it's not like these are big roles, and yet they're still excluded. Regarding wanting more variety in the main cast, rather than just a bunch of Super Saiyans, that goes alongside the Buu Saga issue. The Buu Saga deliberately made all fighters who weren't Saiyans basically irrelevant, it was pushing for a Super Saiyan team, even when it didn't make much sense. The humans were retiring, but don't forget that scene where Piccolo was picked up as one the weakest fighters of the group by Dabura, who didn't even know about Goku and Vegeta having Super Saiyan at that point. Or Android 18 panicking after seeing a ki blast from Goten and Trunks who kept up with her while in costume in spite of lacking the super special training the others needed to go beyond her level and not even coming up during their talk about fusion. So, dropping the idea of a Super Saiyan main team is basically the same as going against one of the elements that pushed Goten and Trunks forward in the first place.

The energy absorption seemed to stop or it was greatly reduced after Vegeta used his technique. Note that everyone landed on the ground and didn't seem to note their power being absorbed. By that point it seemed to be only Goku who was directly grabbed by him.It did happen though, the issue is that there was one crystal left that Merus didn't destroy, since it was in a hand he cut off. The dialogue does mention that he sealed Moro's power when destroying the crystals, which is why Moro couldn't regenerate them, even though they didn't bother naming that technique or giving it some unique visual effect. That's a really bad comparison. It's not like base needs to be as strong as Blue in order to turn Blue. It just needs to hit some specific level that has never been elaborated upon. Meanwhile that swords needed to be at least as strong as a fused Super Saiyan Blue, probably even stronger than that.Have you completely forgotten the beginning of the arc? The whole point of the new backstory is that Grand Kai was actually much stronger in the past, but lost most of his power sealing Moro. The Grand Kai that faced Kid Buu was much weaker than the one that sealed Moro. Then when Moro was freed they expected him to recover that power and be able to seal him again, only it turned out Mr.Buu didn't actually inherit that power in spite of having the Grand Kai's mind within him, the power was with the other half (Kid Buu/Uub).

Goku just needed to punch him there because Moro was falling apart. It's the same reason Moro just died when that happened rather than just being weakened.Because it's specifically noted in dialogue that Merus was sealing them so he couldn't regenerate? You might not like it, but it's plainly stated. Anyway, he recovered the arm that Merus just cut off (leaving it with the crystal) rather than regenerating any of the crystals that Merus broke. And he had even regenerated that arm after it was cut, so it's clear he wasn't limited in the same way he was regarding the broken/sealed crystals.Yes, the part about the Grand Kai and Moro's original sealing is fairly vague, unlike the Merus battle. Regarding how strong Grand Supreme Kai was originally, it's all vague too since Moro's own power also doesn't have a clear level due to being mostly based on his energy absorption. Still, just like with the SSB situation before, keep in mind that whatever power Goku received just needed to power up his base, then SS/UI would add extra power on top of that. The power by itself doesn't need to be SS/UI level (although the clear implication with Uub's power here is that it surpassed the remaining powers of Vegeta and the others put together).

I think the actual issue is clearly not caring for them considering how few characters he bothered designing, not even one per universe. No characters from other universes in Broly either (where he was writing the script, not just giving a story outline).

There were still some known changes during the ToP too, like rejecting Toyo's pages that showed Belmod and his angel flirting. Toriyama also rewrote the interactions of Ribrianne with the main cast (and he was also the one that added the bit with the arms of her two partners extending to wrap 18 rather than just making them hold her). We don't know about anything from later into the ToP or during the current arc though.

Dragonball has never had strong world building though. We get previously unknown parts of the world/universe in almost every arc. No one would blink if they introduced some new legendary plot device or master with special techniques that can power up some character. It's just that nowadays Toriyama doesn't seem to bother with that unless it's tied to Goku (or the key to defeat the villain, if not a character directly). Just look at all the hope for a Piccolo power up that popped up due to something like "Namek book of legends" being mentioned once. People are used to stuff coming out of nowhere in DB. There just needs to be .That Saiyan saga power up was basically following what Dragonball used to do - the supporting cast goes on to get Goku's old training/master and end up stronger than he was when he first finished that training, but still can't keep up with current Goku (this sequence was kind of broken when they went to North Kai and although said to master the training there faster than Goku, they didn't get any techniques). 17's situation is different since he was just said to be training off-screen, without any attempts at all to make that training seem special. It's really not the same as what Dragonball used to do.

That's kind of what I'm talking about though. Those things usually resulted in giving the characters a hype moment, then it turns out it isn't enough against the current threat before the actual relevant fighter/power up of the arc is revealed. I'm not talking about the characters actually taking the spotlight to beat the new villains, just getting some kind of hype that feels genuine before they're brought down. The current storytelling mostly drops that altogether and the one time we got something similar with 17's training it was just briefly mentioned once with no details at all. It's why I'm saying that justifying new power ups for secondary characters shouldn't be hard, Toriyama just isn't bothering anymore. Either he does nothing or we get a very generic line like with 17.

They could just give power ups to everyone. I don't get why coming up with power ups for old characters seems so hard for Toriyama nowadays if the character isn't Goku (or Vegeta reusing his power ups). Even the few we've actually gotten feel half-assed (like 17 just getting "I trained").

When did that happen? Anyway, those trainings were still portrayed as special within the context of the series, even if you feel they weren't, which is why the characters went after them in the first place (or why they're mentioned afterwards, like the humans training with Karin before the 23rd Budokai which is only mentioned in dialogue during the arc itself). With 17, they didn't even try to sell people on the idea of his training being special. You mention his lack of fatigue for example, but the series itself didn't bring that up when briefly mentioning his training.

They complained, but at the end when they saw the results they realized it was special all along. It's why you had Yamcha going to train with Roshi afterwards for example (and Kuririn still there). Same goes to Korin, who ends up training all humans before the 23rd Budokai. It used to happen before though, like the reused Goku training, the elder Namekian potential unlock and Namekian fusion.

The main issue with this development is that I doubt it will stick beyond this one speech (He'll still be just fine with letting Freeza go around the universe as long as he's terrorizing people he doesn't know). The 5ch thread about Super talks about the manga and I barely see complaints there. On the other hand, it's true the manga just doesn't have a lot of attention in general when you look at it overall (twitter/sales).But that doesn't fit with the manga at all, so I don't get why you're saying it's trying to ape the anime? There was no physical trigger. Back when Goku was training with Merus, it was already stated in this arc itself that the trigger is probably going through great emotional shock, but keeping control of his emotions (which fits the scene in the manga ToP where Goku mentions 17's "death" but is still calm right before going UI).Like I said though, this still is awkward considering how natural UI seemed to be in the ToP, with this retcon coming since there had to be an explanation for no UI in the Broly movie.

I don't think he walked back on it (at least not in this arc), he was just trying to come up with an explanation for why UI suddenly couldn't be used after the ToP. The actual problem is that his introduction for UI during the ToP felt way too natural since it was built as the conclusion of his development, so Goku being unable to use it afterwards (to fit in with the Broly movie) felt odd from the start. Bringing up the "trigger" stuff in this arc is just attempting to make sense of it all.

Toriyama gives the outline for each arc, and also reviews the chapter's storyboards that come back afterwards, sometimes even redrawing or rewriting some content (like Ribrianne's interactions with Kuririn, 18 and Beerus in the manga were actually by Toriyama. He also also the one that drew Ribrianne's allies extending their hands like tentacles to hold 18). The manga volumes sometimes come with extra material showing some of Toriyama's direct input or corrections.Toyotaro has commented that Toriyama mostly focuses on comedic moments, although we know there have been a few times he was involved with serious elements. Toriyama drew the introduction of the U6 tournament with the space hymn and also redrew Toyotaro's take on the planet (which was very small initially rather than actually planet-sized). Toriyama was the one who pushed to make Shin more dignified and serious in the manga version of the Trunks arc, he also redrew Toyotaro's introductory panels for Zamasu. Toriyama also outright forced Toyotaro to change Belmod's introduction in the manga, where he initially was shown flirting with his angel, but apparently Toriyama doesn't want angels involved in romance (this one was from a tv show, rather than a manga volume). The current arc is more muddled, since apparently Toyotaro was participating in its creation from the start, even designing the new ally and villains. However, it was mentioned in an interview that Merus' secret was actually Toriyama's idea.

And in the same chapter that ends with Vegeta rushing headlong into a battle where he instantly loses. Rather than hyping Vegeta, it just makes Piccolo look dumb. Looking back, Toyotaro seems to write lines that make Piccolo look bad rather often when Piccolo is involved in the story somehow. It really makes it seem like he doesn't like him. There was Piccolo being self-depreciating during the U6 arc, and he also undermined Piccolo training Gohan for the tournament by leaving it to one page and adding that extra chapter that showed Gohan training even before that point. It's all fairly minor, but at this point it's making a pattern.

I'll be surprised if Vegeta's technique isn't just energy absorption (or energy draining without absorption), considering how we get that shot of those tired Yardrats.Toyo's Goku himself has also used lower forms to converse stamina (U6 tournament) and even created a special way of using SSB to conserve power with it in the Future Trunks arc. I think this is different scenario though, since it was about fighting while holding back without any real tricks behind it, just pulling his power, and that has never been a big Goku thing. Pretty much the only time Toriyama did it was when he retconned Goku into being outright stronger than Fat Buu by revealing he was holding back in their previous battle.Pretty sure 73 will still do something.Vegeta did get a variation of SSB Blue in the manga too, although the only difference in the manga is pretty much the way the aura is drawn (note how it doesn't have the bubbles that manga SSB has, rather than that it has a fiery aura).

The issue here is that none of the situations were that dramatic. They were overpowered, but no one was out yet. Compare with the Recoome battle where by the time Goku arrived they couldn't even stand. Still, the passiveness of the secondary cast is annoying, but it's not like that started here. It has been going on ever since Dragonball returned. The only characters that strive for new things are Goku and Vegeta. Even Gohan's "growth" was just to go back to training rather than something actually new. Everything starts from Toriyama though. Based on the interview about the Trunks arc, it was the Toriyama outline itself that didn't have much of a role for Trunks. Of course, Toyo's idea of giving more presence for him was the healing powers, which should have been immediately shot down as a bad idea, but it's clear Toriyama didn't care much about him in the first place (compare with several storyboards immediately thrown away because Toriyama didn't want a GoD and an Angel flirting). The anime tried to do various emotional moments to secondary characters in the ToP, but even then they were held back by the fact they had no actual plot points tied to them. That resulted in oddities like Kuririn's training that supposedly made him stronger than ever before being just standard gym equipment and then he got unceremoniously knocked out in the tournament itself in spite of the great build up to it.

I don't think it's even related to their characters or lack of it. Toriyama probably just doesn't like the idea of children fighting anymore. The group battle scene in RoF was fairly vague in his script and yet he still left them out. It's either that or he decided that due to them debuting too late into the original series it's better to give the position of secondary characters to the ones who were around for longer (this also could explain why he's avoiding making them grow, since the audience might expect them to get some focus if they changed, but if they remain the same no one will expect them to get any spotlight).

The one actual direct retcon Toriyama makes in the final battle is Goku stating that he'd have been able to finish Fat Buu before and he made a mistake in not doing it at that point, so it definitely seems like setting up Gotenks wasn't done with Goku as the main hero in mind, in spite of Goku's involvement there.

I don't think so. Gohan is shown in a bad light at that point, but it's mostly building up to him recovering his former power. It's especially noticeable in the manga where Goku vs Majin Vegeta ends up as an oddly brief side-note rather than an actual emotional battle that receives a lot of focus. I think the point where it's clear Goku is taking over is when he arrives on the Supreme planet. He is the one that drives them to break the Z Sword for example, being the active factor in Gohan's story there, then we get Gohan getting a big power up, but in a way that doesn't make any climatic sense for the story, which leads to him losing very quickly after his debut.

The issue with that rewrite is that... it's a complete rewrite. It's a type of story that Toriyama would never write and it's pretty obvious due to how many changes are added even to the segment of the series where Gohan was the protagonist. Gohan could be kept in the lead position without nearly as many changes. The point where I think Toriyama had given up on Gohan as the lead is when the Z Sword breaks and elder Kaioshin reveals his ability. It's clear that the Ultimate form without any dramatic stakes or serious build up would never be the plot device that would close the arc. Maybe the power up still would be there, but Gohan would leave with it incomplete in order to save whoever was left on Earth, and unlock the actual form during battle? Then the epilogue would go back to the fallout of his identity reveal and give bigger focus to Videl's crush on him, rather than swiping aside that entire side of the arc.

In the anime, during the U6 arc, It's specifically said there that Blue had less strain than the previous forms though, which is why he could never combine Kaioken with other forms before in the first place. During the U6 arc, they never mention any kind of drain in spite of Goku crazily facing Hit in base initially (aside from the early line that's also in the manga). In the Trunks arc, It's specifically mentioned that it has a high initial cost when activating the transformation and using twice would drain more, and we're shown that eliminating that cost effectively gives Goku and Vegeta a huge power up. Vegeta goes from having problems with the powered up Black SSJ to beating him up in once he eliminates the cost of transforming by combining some special training with the SSJ God trick. Just because they don't mention the specific 90% amount doesn't mean it was getting ignored. It was still clearly a huge power up.The power up is big enough that Goku goes from around or bellow Goku Black Rose's level (he didn't face him, but the entire context makes it clear he wouldn't be able to win either, and when both Vegeta and Goku were in standard Blue they did just as badly against Fused Zamasu) to matching fused Zamasu once he retains the entire power. So, even without numbers it's clearly a big power up.This is about power because Goku and Vegeta were losing to Black after he got a few zenkai, even in the same form, and yet easily surpass him once they eliminate the drain, so there's nothing indicating it wasn't affecting him. Also, he never goes in and out of Rose combat. He turns into it right after getting a Zenkai, and later on only removes the transformation after everyone runs away, turning again in the next day against Trunks and then just remaining transformed once Goku and Vegeta arrive.Like I said, Vegeta only says that Black is stronger than Trunks once Black power ups and creates a barrier that stops his blasts, so at that point the art is really pointing to him being stronger than Vegeta in SSJ 2.The situation only became desperate due to Vegeta pulling Blue, which Black didn't expect. Still, in the next chapter, it's outright stated getting hurt was Black's plan all along. He uses SSJ to make Vegeta think that he's fighting seriously, but just didn't expect Vegeta to be that strong, which is why he initially held back too much and then afterwards got crushed by Blue, with Zamasu barely making it in time since they didn't expect the battle to be so one sided.

That's completely different, it's from Kaioken's strain on his body, which isn't the same as just getting tired from transforming. It doesn't really justify fighting in base in the beginning. It was mentioned in the Trunks arc though, even if mostly to write it out. And just staying transformed would still result in him wasting the initial boost of the form.It didn't really seem more energy efficient though. Goku Black was getting healed by Zamasu all the time, and once Vegeta and Goku used methods to surpass their energy issues they easily became stronger than Black.I'm not saying he doesn't forget, but forgetting stuff from the previous month, that's actually getting referenced in the very same chapter, just seems like an extreme stretch. Regarding Vegeta vs Black though, Vegeta only says that he finally sees how Trunks couldn't beat Black once he creates a barrier that stops Vegeta's attack (while beforehand he was just getting beaten up). So, the script does point to him holding back initially. Black seemingly didn't know about Vegeta's blue transformation and planned to get beaten up to power up according go the next chapter, so him holding back in SSJ makes sense. It was still poor storytelling though to waste an entire chapter on that.

I can see the line of thought behind that. If there's no issue with using Blue, the entire bit with Goku fighting in base in the beginning of the battle (where he directly talks about saving energy by not transforming) just makes no sense and that seems to have come from Toriyama since it was in the anime too - even though the anime took a different route and just ignored that scene afterwards. So, Toyotaro attempted to focus on the whole energy cost issue to go along with that initial set up. Like I said above, the problem with the battle is actually Toyotaro giving Hit a stamina issue too. That's what makes him underwhelming in the manga during that battle.Yeah, there's actually a detailed explanation in the Trunks arc about how there's a big energy cost right after the transformation, when they're setting up the improved versions of Blue that attempt to eliminate or reduce that cost. You're assuming he knew he could regenerate from that though. We're talking about events that are in consecutive chapters, by the same writer, so there's no reason to assume they were forgotten or don't line up. We see him regenerating from the damage, and in the very next chapter it's outright said that it wouldn't have worked. It's not like it was even half a year later or something. Goku also apparently thought it could have killed him, and yet he was wrong.

He only had one shot at using 100% of his power which is why he held back on transforming for so long and then Hit dodged the attack, so his big strategy for the battle failed. What actually hurts that battle is that Hit apparently also had stamina issues in the manga and couldn't hold full power for long. Not really. A powerful enough Kamehameha would blast through him too, but he'd just regenerate afterwards due to his immortality. It doesn't mean the attack would have no effect. We see that he still regenerated the parts destroyed by Hakai. What that means is just that even if he had been 100% reduced to sand he'd still regenerate afterwards due to his immortality.

There was a mandate to stop the cast from growing, but I wonder if that will continue now. The last tv special (Prison of the Past) featured Zenigata's assistant from Part 5, even though it wasn't associated with Part 5 at all otherwise. Of course, he's just a minor supporting character, so it's different from actually bringing back someone like Rebecca or Ami in another major role.

I think Jigen is by far the most consistently entertaining character. I love thrill seeker mastermind Lupin (and thankfully that's mostly what we get nowadays) but some of the humor in part 2 for example makes him so dumb and whiny he becomes the worst part of the episodes in half of the series. Some of my favorite episodes are actually Goemon ones though, but it feels like he just doesn't play well with the rest of the cast, often getting sidelined in a big way when the story isn't specifically about him, while Lupin, Jigen, Zenigata and Fujiko are much better integrated into any kind of story.

I wish I could believe that the animation team isn't randomly messing up. I just noticed that Rika's death scene in the Sotsu trailer is completely different from the one in Onidamashi, but it could be just inconsistent continuity. If it's not an error though, it'd be point to the answer arcs being new fragments rather than just perspective shifts.

I think the Sotsu answer arcs will stand out more compared to the Gou question arcs because the whole point is that there were unexpected elements going on in the background but they were hidden from the viewers. Now we get to see those elements without anything being hidden away, so there should be less retreads of the original series, even the similar elements (Like ) seem to be handled in a different way and then we have Satoko running around making the whole scenario happen and we'll actually see that this time.I don't recommend it, but I guess you could start watching the original series from episode 14 and from there go on to Kai. There is only one arc after that point that has been redone by Gou (the child protection services part of Tataridamashi) and even so that's just the middle of the arc with the beginning and ending being completely different (and not just a last minute death, it was much longer than that).

People generally recommend those three in order due to the Megamax movie, which takes place during early Fourze (and is referenced by the tv show later on) is a pretty good movie and features those three Riders. Also, although the plot is mostly Foundation X related, which is a W/Fourze element, the OOO part is a direct epilogue to the tv show so most of the appeal for that one is having watched OOO.

Naki and Ikazuchi only were created because the producers noticed people expected 4 members for Metsuboujinrai, due to the pattern of the kanji/names of the fist two members. There's also the issue that the place where Naki received the most focus character-wise was probably the Project Thouser mini-series, in spite of the title, but that wasn't even done by Zero-One's main writer. The tv episodes where Naki got most development in the tv show also were done by secondary writers.

I think at this point it's a vicious cycle. Numbers fell for several years, stores don't order much, Bandai also has simplified and cut down the toyline since they aren't expecting much either. There's also how the mecha used to be a huge part of Sentai's toyline, but in the last few years it has competition with another mecha toyline for children for the first time since the 90s, with the Shinkalion series and other related ones that run in the same timeslot, like Earth Granner. You can also see the show itself has taken a huge hit in budget in the last two years and they don't even have budget for actual unique monsters every week anymore, just the same few suits with replacement heads/weapons. I'd also guess that going full comedy series doesn't help selling what are supposed to be cool mecha and roleplay toys. Even "serious" series like Ryusoulger and Lupat are mostly comedy outside of the main story episodes. And then you have Kiramager and Zenkaiger going even harder on comedy.

The subs are oddly bad though, missing stuff and even wrong at times. Anyway, according to that interview, the idea for Rider's transformation pose apparently came from a sumo series which became popular after it added a bunch of extraneous movements for entrances and special attacks.

Until the last few years where Sentai's sales crashed, most of Sentai's merchandising sales came from the mecha though. It's why they've dumped personal weapons (and many years ago dropped the larger weapons and smaller vehicles which were meant for action figures rather than roleplay toys or mecha) but continue with multiple robots even in the recent shows. If anything the mecha were the ones carrying the transforming hero side. These last years though saw a big drop in mecha sales, which probably is a big part of the overall drop in sales that Sentai sees now.The idea with Zenkaiger is pushing the mecha toys even outside of the mecha battles, since they're the biggest part of the toyline. I do agree that pushing for goofy designs and basically making the big anniversary show a parody might not have been a great idea though, especially now that we have the first quarter numbers and they're actually a bit smaller than Kiramager's and over 1 billion yen bellow Bandai's projections. Sentai in general has a problem with lack of adult market compared to Rider though. Sentai barely has Figuarts because their big push back during the Akibaranger/Kyoryuger years failed. After the first few releases, people just didn't buy.

The show takes a while to really get everything in place. For the last few months though I've been looking forward to the next episode every week and the fighting scenes and direction in many of the episodes since around 20 have been consistently great (and even before that there were some stand out episodes action-wise, although they were very inconsistent, since they were right alongside some of the worst cg action in Rider). That was a misunderstanding. That number for Ohranger was the overall group numbers (which used to include Power Rangers money), not just Japanese toy sales. Ohranger still was the best selling series in the late 90s though, but that was basically the worst selling period for Sentai, even lower than recent years (well, this chart isn't a complete one, but Kiramager dropped to that level though, only beating TimeRanger). Note that these are per year, so the Gaoranger/Hurricanger number also is pretty questionable since Gaoranger saw such a hug leap from previous series they were still selling Gaoranger merch during Hurricanger and designed and advertised the Hurricanger mecha as compatible with Gao's.

The directors actually stayed, but under the new showrunners the results were clearly different.

Stronger is great. Well... aside from monster suits that are somehow lower budget than V3/X/Amazon's. Shigeru Jo is a pretty unique protagonist, disrespecting both allies and enemies. After the first 13 episodes or so the show introduces General Shadow, who clashes several times with Black Satan's other commanders, and starts giving focus to villain in-fighting, to the point that it basically drives the series later on. The second half of the show also has tons of cliffhangers or just one episode leading to the next rather than the usual standalone episodes of the Showa era. Tackle unfortunately is a pretty throw away side-kick though, who has pretty bad fighting scenes and basically only really gets to shine in one episode.

Reading behind the scenes info from the Japanese wiki, Zi-O feels like one of those cases where executives force concepts on the writers and you can kind of feel like the writers half-assed how those would be handled compared to how the staff executes their own ideas. See Geiz for an obvious example. Originally meant to be a high school rival for Sougo, but changed to a weaker future rebel when they couldn't get Bandai to give him as many upgrades as Sougo. This all happened before the show started and yet his future backstory remained underdeveloped through the entire series since the writers never cared for it.

I thought they handled it in the best way possible, at least as far as not adding a new suit goes. He didn't become Kabuto by mimicking Tendo's style, it was by doing his own thing. And he needed Kabuto's power to destroy Another Kabuto, otherwise it'd fall to Zi-O's crew. The best possible version of that episode though would have been him getting the Hyper Zecter for real and turning into Hyper Gattack, but they'd probably need to make a new suit for that, since it's very unlikely the old one shot HBV suit still exists.

Just tried to search for info about him but I couldn't find anything. He does feel kind of odd though, especially with him appearing in the Final Stage in spite of not being part of the main cast. There are several scrapped end game plans mentioned by the wiki, all with sources, but none mention him. Originally, the idea seemed to be a huge clash of Riders fighting for the throne. This was even mentioned in an early .5 episode as a teaser, and in the show itself it's mentioned that Oma Zi-O eliminated all other Riders when he appeared when the Day of Oma is first explained in the Shinobi arc. The original end-game idea would be Zi-O vs high schooler Geiz, but after they dropped that plan for Geiz, they also dropped him as the final boss. At this point, the idea was Woz organizing the entire conflict, with the form we now know as Woz Ginga being actually Woz's true form for when his true nature is revealed. There were also plans involving this scenario where rather than facing Woz it'd be Oma Zi-O or even Decade as the final opponent. Ultimately, this entire scenario was scrapped when they realized Woz was very popular as an ally and thought making him a villain setting up a Rider War would hurt that popularity. They also mention this originated the idea for Woz's betrayal in Over Quartzer, although even then they avoided making Woz behind it all and had a new character above him.

I feel like the Og Ultraman always suffers when it gets into the battles compared to the other stuff. There are some later episodes that are shot throughout, but then the giant Ultraman battle just drags everything down. Later on they kind of stop doing overly goofy choreography like that one time Red King was cheering while other monsters fought, or Ultraman acting like a boastful (mime) wrestler in some early battles, but the suit acting still feels oddly goofy and weightless even when they aren't openly going for humor. UltraSeven is overall more serious, although a few of the battles still fall to goofy stuff. It limits almost all stories to be about alien invasions though, rather than the complete free flow of the original Ultraman, where the only requirement is a giant monster appearing for a battle at the end. Return of Ultraman generally is serious too and pushes character drama much more strongly than both of the previous series. It also still has a couple of episodes that stand out a lot visually in the middle of the series (and they finally manage to make good suits for quadruped monsters). However, it's also the series where they start giving up on being an actual sci-fi show and become more like standard toku, with many monsters just appearing out of nowhere in order to trigger the episode's human drama, some feeling really forced (like this one time a construction team finds a complete dinosaur fossil and they just want to demolish it to finish their building, and only children and people sympathizing with the children seem to care enough to stop them from destroying what should be a historic discovery). It's also pretty clear the show was running low on budget in later episodes when the entire "Earth defense force" was reduced to five guys in a car. The finale ends up pretty underwhelming. Then Ultraman Ace is when they completely gave up and it's just a standard toku show, although with some very out there imagery at times. There's now an actual recurring villain behind the scenes sending the monsters and they can appear anywhere from anything, due to their "chouju/Terrible Monster" creating machine. There are many serious episodes, but also a few quite goofy encounters beyond anything in the previous series. Frustratingly, the special team here also often dismisses reports of monsters from their own crew, even punishing the main character sometimes when he wants to lead an investigation but there's no giant stomping around, which makes little sense when they know there's a recurring threat. It also introduces goofier concepts like the "Ultra Brothers" as recurring characters (although most of the time just to briefly give plot devices, exposition or job) and "Father of Ultra" . I'm only starting Taro so I can't comment on it yet.

Daizyujin basically marked a whole new era for Sentai mecha design. It's a big break from everything that came before with the clear animal motif visible in the components and combined mecha, and not just by decals. Gaoking sold so well they actually continued advertising its line during Hurricanger and made its mecha compatible with Gao's. It was a huge jump in sales from previous series. Magiranger didn't actually do that well, but still did fine and I guess there's just nothing comparable as far as its "legendary/magic creatures" motif goes. For Boukenger...As far as the DaiBouken goes, I'd guess it's because it's pretty close to a pure vehicle motif. Series like Dekaranger and Go-Onger carry with them other big traits like police and vehicle/animal hybrids, and I guess they wanted a pure vehicle motif there (and Boukenger beats Carranger and other late 90s Sentai that could compete for that spot).Gao vs Hurri might be somewhat misleading. Keep in mind that Gaoranger came from much lower numbers in the previous years, so stores wouldn't order that much in the first place. They were still producing Gaoranger's Power Animals and advertising their compatibility with Hurricanger's during its run. So, part of the numbers for Hurricanger are actually just more Gao.It's rumored to be him. But, yes, not confirmed yet. There's also his recent talk in that History of Super Sentai presentation, where he highlighted the robots as Sentai's selling point (and how it originally took a timeslot that had been used for robot anime) and also highlighted how the series are all separate and unrelated and there's no point in focusing on similarities between them, which would line up with taking it in a very different direction.

I really think the Kento situation happened due to Takuro Fukuda (the main writer) leaving for almost 2 months after writing one episode focused on him and then the other writers taking him in a different direction than the one he intended, with these two episodes and the special tied to episode 13 being heavy damage control. Back in episode 5, Takuro Fukuda wrote Kento brooding about his father, but then he opened up with Buster and Touma and he seemingly was fine in episode 6. But then the secondary writers just made him more and more obsessed with his father's mystery afterwards, falling back into lone battles and rejecting others. Then Takuro Fukuda returns and suddenly tries to make it seem like he actually valued everyone and everyone liked him, ignoring or downplaying all the conflict they had. It feels oddly common in Rider to see obvious characterization issues in shows with many writers, but Takuro Fukuda left really early this time, so there wasn't even a clear baseline, which probably just made the situation worse (he wrote episodes 1-2, 5-6, then skipped all the way to 13-14).

There's basically no relation of its main plot with Black aside from the main hero being a Rider from the start of the new show and the villains (who are completely new) already knowing about him. A few events and characters from Black are mentioned or appear later though, but Black's main premise/conflict isn't really continued by RX. As far as Black RX counting as a separate main Rider goes, that all goes back to Shirakura, the producer of most early Heisei series up to Decade. Originally, Black RX was just the 11th main Rider too. There's even a recap episode between Black and Black RX that outright calls Black RX the 11th Rider. However, Shirakura dislikes any kind of continuity and prefers seeing each work (tv series and movie) as completely independent. During Decade, he managed to get Kotaro's actor back and used the crossovers on tv and movie to firmly establish Black and Black RX coexisting as separate Riders from parallel worlds.

Zaia holds all the cards. Gai could have just bought Hiden from the start if he didn't agree with the contest. In fact, they've outright said that was the original idea, but they kept this arc going since the idea of a company president Kamen Rider was unique and they hesitated on dropping it. Still, this arc pretty much marks the point where the whole "public reactions" aspect of Zero-One becomes completely artificial, with people ignoring obvious stuff done by Gai because then it'd derail the plot/structure the creators wanted, then they will suddenly be relevant again when it's convenient for the story later on.

I don't think that's really the issue, the actual problem is that the movie does very little with them. Heisei Generations Forever gives many of them lines (recycled quotes, but it's still great to give them presence), has several of them rescuing people, has individual action sequences for most of them, or unique combo attacks. There's the bike/vehicle group scene and then a sequence where they all individually use their finishers one by one. Over Quartzer on the other hand has a very brief sequence with the camera panning showing them beating up grunts, with no real individual scenes or lines for any of them. They also don't interact with anyone (which is a big missed opportunity when they had someone like Mach right there). There's the cool shot where they all turn into their final forms, but right after that they're just a generic group facing the movie Riders, without any special spotlight to them individually, just as a group, like this time when they all use Rider Kicks it's just them all acting in unison without any individuality (which could work as a finisher if they had gotten unique spotlights earlier, but they didn't either).

I don't think president Hiden even realized that Humagears could go through singularity at that point. He valued them, but not as people.Early in the show Humagears getting hacked was basically death. Before they came up with Humagear keys there was no way to restore them (Aruto sent identical copies to replace them, but several times they show they'd need to learn everything again). In order to erase the Zi-O related events from everyone's memories since this movie came out before Geiz Majesty, where the Zi-O crew starts without their memories (and Geiz Majesty was shot before this movie, considering how they had a trailer with a couple of scenes right after the tv show ended).Yeah, this movie's box office was a big drop from the previous two Heisei Generations movies (0.94 billion yen -> 1.28 billion yen -> 1.56 billion yen -> around 0,9 billion yen), even though previously Heisei Generation was the one series of Rider movies that got higher and higher box office with each entry. I guess they wanted to avoid guests here due to the 50th anniversary next year though, where they certainly will be pushing guests again, but it seems unnecessary. Like the Heisei Generations series itself has shown (or, you know, the MCU), if the crossovers are good people won't get tired of them, they will want more and more. The Movie Wars and Super Hero Taisen series showed decreasing revenue because they had big problems, not because people got tired from crossovers.

If you just mean the lack of an overall battlefield shot, there's a simple reason for that... There was only one suit for all variations of the duck monsters in this episode. The only times they even appear together were when one of them was using the invisible effect and a side shot where you can't even see their feet on the ground (since that's where digital composition would be most obvious). Even when two of them attacked Slash at once, they were always in completely separate cuts. In the official blog, they also had separate pictures for each one rather than a single group shot. Sakamoto had to avoid an actual battlefield shot and the camera was always focused on specific characters since any wide location shot would expose how there was actually only one duck suit. Still, like I said, his Rider group battles always break down into solo fights, this just meant no initial establishing shots.

We just came from an animal focused series so it feels like they only made the three animal books for the main Riders and then were done with them. This episode was directed by Koichi Sakamoto though. And it lines up with how he generally handles battles with multiple Riders (see Megamax, Ultimatum, Heisei Generations). They spread apart and take on enemies one vs one or at best two to one. I guess it's to allow the individuality of each Rider to shine through rather than presenting them as a collective "team".

I don't think Koyomi's role being reduced had anything to do with the story meandering, it just reduced her development and resulted in things like them always flashing back to the same couple of moments she shot outside to show she had bonded with Haruto in the final few episodes. Wizard's story structure is pretty typical for shows produced by Utsunomiya, it's just he's mostly a Sentai producer (Shinkenger, Gokaiger, Toqger, Zyuohger, Lupinranger vs Patranger). Wizard suffered compared to them since due to only having two Riders compared to a full Sentai team there was even less they could do while the plot wasn't advancing.Ultraman's toy sales in Japan are still bellow even current Sentai. It just makes more money outside of that, and only since last year, so a large part of it is just Sentai's sales falling more and more. Also, Bandai outright owns 49% of Ultraman while they only have a toy license for Sentai, so it's hard to tell where that money is coming from. You can see something similar (to a larger scale) with Gundam in Bandai's financials, where the overall group numbers also get a big boost compared to just the Japanese toy numbers, but it's yet another franchise that's owned by Bandai (and this one is actually fully owned).

His suit looks oddly cheap compared to the other Riders, he considers strength to be justice and he's supposed to be super confident in his own fighting ability. All that seems to be setting up a situation where he gets in over his head and then is killed off.

Note that they have to reshoot the initial part most of the time due to the characters wearing different clothing. Production-wise the main benefit seems to be that they eat more time of the episode. Saber has a lot of stuff that only seems to be around to make the episodes smaller (stock footage transformations, which weren't even shortened for the 2nd time in the same episode last week, ending, narrator segments). I think this all goes back to the show's producer Kazuhiro Takahashi. This is the same person who was frightened enough by some parents complaining about Ghost's portrayal in Drive's movie pre-screenings to rush to reformulate the tv show itself before episode 1 even aired (even though the Drive movie itself wasn't changed since that was under Ohmori). I wouldn't be surprised if he's also overly cautious about the COVID situation and pushed for this even though it has had much less visible effects on Zero-One and Kirameiger.

I think the big oddity with this show's pacing is that there's basically no real world context. If you look at the cast list we have so far, the only people from the real world who are recurring characters are Touma and his editor. The first episode still played along and had him taking care of some children, but it was clearly something rather superficial and then 2nd episode basically shoved aside anything related to their old lives. We go from exposition about the Riders and villains to another battle, with the real world basically only existing as a place where they rest and a place that's getting attacked by the villains. Usually something like this would only happen late into the series, if it happened at all.

This should include the first quarter of the next series too, so it doesn't seem like they're really expecting any recovery from the franchise at this point. Jin's death is just another excuse for him to keep on in the same path, not the reason he did it in the first place. He feared dropping the only thing he knew. And to make it even more obvious he was accusing Aruto of being Ark incarnate working with Ark on the side in this final arc itself. None of his speeches were genuine. They were just him fearing change (within himself). The reveals after episode 29 don't line up with the build up in the first half at all (The initial producer and writer leave after episode 29) and that had nothing to do with what caused the staff changes, so it was just Inoue completely misreading all the show's build up.

It's bizarre to me that in the beginning of the show they seemed very focused on making something that could stand out as the start of a new era, from the show itself to the toy designs but soon the tv staff by themselves completely derailed things into a lengthy professional collaboration initiative (the job competition arc was as big as it was because they got many offers for professional collaborations and apparently the production enjoyed working with them). The break and rushed ending didn't help, but the core issue of the show was in the middle when many elements of the setting got scrapped to force the job competition arc and several character arcs were frozen during that too.

There are still some unrevealed Riders for the first quarter itself. Still, I think Valkyrie was clearly a case of a Bandai concept that the show's staff was begrudgingly forced to take on. She's widely pushed as third Rider in promotional images, but in the show itself they quickly sidelined her after the first arc. I also doubt there were sales issues since Bandai used Yua to advertise the Raid Riser, which would have been odd if they considered her merch a sales failure. It's also pretty telling that the show got several last minute forms, which are more influenced by the tv staff itself than Bandai, and none of those went for Yua.

Checking some series, I'm surprised that as late as Bioman and the Kamen Rider ZX special, 1984, they still didn't have that (at least not consistently - they just slash grunts with no effects at all, but could use sparks for some specific stuff - like Apollogeist's slashing shield attack as early as X(1974)). Liveman(88) seems to be the first time where they use sparks universally, slash attacks on grunts or monsters. Black (87) also had sparks (or some powder?) used for almost every slash, but in this case it was mostly monster/villain attacks against the hero, so it's not quite the same as using sparks even to show hits on throw away grunts. Maskman used sparks for monsters/climatic battles, but not when the heroes were just slashing grunts (or at least they do so very rarely), so I guess Liveman is the point where it became an universal effect.

There's the issue of the alignments of your active demons. If you have a Chaos demon alongside neutral ones, your party will be considered chaos aligned and law demons won't join for example. You can't have active demons of the opposing alignment (at least not when attempting to recruit demons with "Ex Chaos" or "Ex Law" alignment, or if you have one of those Ex alignment demons in your party). There's also the level issue. You can only recruit demons on your own level or bellow it.

Nocturne is fairly different from the other mainline SMTs. Most mainline games take place in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo with cyberpunk elements (or outright cyberpunk, depending on the game), and Nocturne clearly isn't like that. SMT1 and 2 didn't have long event scenes, but there were still many human npcs (and even some human party members, although most were temporary). SMT IV had longer scenes although oddly a lot of the world building is left to talking with random minor npcs. There wasn't much character focus though. Generally the party members were there to showcase the paths or factions the player can choose, acting more like archetypes than really developed characters. IV does add a bit more to it, but it's still mostly in those lines. IV Apocalypse outright goes with a character focused story though, but then it falls into cliche JRPG territory.

The main issue with it though is that there's still little variation possible in the first few days. The Eighth days are pretty good, although only 3 routes get them (Yuzu, Amane, Naoya). In Naoya's and Yuzu's cases, they also pretty much scrap the original ending though, leading to new conclusions, rather than just showing the eighth day of the original route. Naoya route is traditionally seen as a "chaos ending" for example, but the Eighth Day doesn't really go in that direction aside from fighting against heaven's forces.

The problem with SMTIV's law and chaos endings is that although they're weren't completely shafted into early bad endings like in Apocalypse, the game still was clearly designed in a way where neutral was the "Good" or at least "hardest to reach" ending, both getting into the route and then the route itself. As a result of that, laws and chaos are basically sabotaged on a conceptual level, since the game design clearly favors neutral. It makes all the more odd the way the game just ignores the factions you haven't sided with after the route split, since even neutral ends up feeling incomplete due to the chaos and law forces basically just sitting around waiting for the final battle there, with no real build up.

The characters suffer an ailment if they're hit by some of his attacks, but at the start you should be doing normal damage. Then when he opens the first portal there's an effect that automatically applies the ailment on everyone so you need to move a character to the portal to cancel it (first two portals are curse, but you attacks there can dodged, later two from the 2nd phase are poison and the attacks there can't be dodged - you can use the same character in multiple portals too if you're doing solo, unlike co-op).You're meant to use the prisons to stop the waves. The prison will block all attacks against the character stuck there and the waves that hit the prison will disappear (I generally just go to the center to cancel them all). Still, yeah, even doing everything correctly the battle feels too long. During phase 2 though, there's an issue that the waves seem to eat into the dragon gauge (so you might end up with a character stuck in the prison if you can't get more dragon gauge from remaining portals). Edit: Actually, I think this might be only for co-op.

Shadow had gotten two big power creeps (Gala Cleo, and then new characters balanced around her, and then Gala Alex was even above her, and there were even more characters balanced around her level) throughout the game's run, and this rebalance gave boosts to 150 adventurers and all dragons to make all elements closer together in power.

Save one copy of each dragon even if you have no interest at all in them since when you max friendship with them you get Sunlight Ore, which you can eventually combine into a Sunlight Stone (10 ores for one stone) which is used to unbind 5 star dragons. The friendship is the same for all copies of the same dragon, so having multiple of the same ones doesn't help.

I think the biggest oddity was how weak the anniversary event was. It was usually the biggest showcase for their events and always felt like it might as well be the "final story" of the game, and yet this time it was just a bunch of nothing. I did like the not-Three Kingdoms one and the last Idolmaster Collab though (which integrated quite a few actual Granblue characters, and the 2nd half especially just felt like one of Lowain's events but with some Cinderella Girls characters popping up for the crazy bar talk too alongside a bunch of Granblue ones). The first summer event was just "there", not nearly as good as last year's. I haven't read the new one yet.

Leonidas pushed a belief in standing up with their own strength, but then immediately bowed down to Morsayati and hoped to be helped by him, betraying all that, while still proclaiming to be following his own path. The contradictions of that were pointed out last chapter. The part about hope was because he claimed that people just saw Euden as hope and didn't bother to do anything on their own, but Alex brings up how the hope they had thanks to him (Leonidas) was the reason they actually stood up back then and that now Euden is the one actually making people move, not him.Well, so far they haven't had him directly involved with slaughtering villages and stuff. He's just participating in military campaigns. In this chapter we also got him getting Zethia to send him to protect the borders from an approaching army while she didn't seem to care about that at all. Although, yes, it's basically a way to keep him as a surface level "honorable enemy soldier" without making him outright evil (in a direct way) or make him defy the empire, which would break the concept of honorable .It would help due to the pity rate. As long as they didn't throw a bunch of old characters on rate up alongside him, the pity rate would mostly raise his chances rather than a bunch of other characters alongside him... They did throw a bunch of unrelated old characters in the rate up of the last Monster Hunter banner though.

Leonidas just got called out on betraying his supposed ideals in the last chapter and ended up siding with Euden by the beginning of this one. Chelle also has been mostly helping even if she doesn't want to do it officially. Phares is really the big one where we get constantly stuck in this loop of Euden somehow thinking that he's nice in spite of everything that he says and does. Obviously Valyx isn't helping either, but at least in that case he's just the typical "honorable enemy soldier" character, rather than doing evil stuff on his own like Emile and Phares.

I don't think the event would be dated. The first one happened during the beginning of Heroes' Book 3 and at least had Fjorm from Heroes' Book 2. The Syndicate event seems to have been held back for a long time for some reason and has some oddities due to that, like how Andromeda the dragon acts like a defenseless girl in the event story and Aldred although having a dragon form hyped by the event in the gameplay uses a different power up (which only gets heavily featured in Bellina's story scenes, not the event's or his own). Eir, Peony(depending on the timing of production) or even Loki seem more likely rather than Ylgr to me. As far as Ike and Lyn go, I guess it depends on whether Heroes is really lending their most popular characters. They might be old news, but Heroes did just use them for their first paid skins. I agree on the distribution though (one more Heroes character and then two FE characters). I think we aren't getting Three Houses characters though. The first collab had 3 Heroes characters, and only one of those got to near the top of a Choose Your Heroes (Veronica in 2nd place), alongside Marth, who is an iconic character and generally does well in the CYHs, but never gets to the top. I doubt they'd just throw in the characters who just got chosen as the most popular FE characters... On the other hand, I guess the characters likely would have been chosen before the results of that poll... so maybe this last paragraph is completely wrong.

Also no poison , so her whole niche is fairly different from Delphi's. Like the recent free character, she has Dragon Drive (power up for her adventurer form rather than transformation), so no dragon tanking for her (which is probably why the new dragon Andromeda includes huge defense buffs alongside the attack buff when health goes low, something that happens automatically with them due to their skills).

The maid dress feels more like what she should get if they made a non-seasonal 5 stars version of Melody. As far as the actual adventurer story goes, if we had gotten sweater Melody they could just have cut the initial lines about a new dress due to her old one being dirty and make her pop up with the sweater at the end of the story, when she starts thinking that meeting Euden in town during Valentine's might mean it's a date.

When they had a Granblue Collab in Princess Connect, they added Djeeta (the female player avatar in Granblue, who is usually a silent character) as her own character with lines and such. Story-wise, she was a version of Djeeta from the Princess Connect world itself, rather than crossing dimensions and such. I'd guess they could add her alongside either other main cast members (like Katalina) or some fan favorite crew members. Lyria probably wouldn't be playable though since she isn't meant to fight directly. They also likely would be permanently added to the gacha like the Knights of Glory/Bahamut characters. Well, either that or they could follow something similar to what Granblue did with its Princess Connect collab where you get some of Princess Connect's main characters, but the player avatar is kept off-screen (yet again, there was no world hopping involved, they were rewritten to be from the Granblue world). Also, it could be tied to an event or even just a banner (like the Knights of Glory one we got). If it's an event I could see them adding Djeeta or Gran as the free story character with the others being gacha. And when the past event option is added I'm pretty sure it'd be there permanently, like how the Princess Connect and Shadowverse collabs are permanently accessible in Granblue once they added past events as permanent side-stories.

So, you're meant to give Hastur to AI partners in single player content (or raids) rather than using him in your primary character. The AI character will have 45% strength like the 4 star str dragons, but its effect will also give 15% strength to your primary character, and then you can stack that which can give a big damage boost to your primary character once added to Zephyr in your primary. Even without a MUB Hastur you'll be getting 10% bonuses for each one, which might be useful somewhere/depending on your team composition...

There are various groups involved here. The GT push you see nowadays is from Bandai, not Toei. The Dragonball Room created to manage the brand is from Shueisha, not Toei. It's why I brought up the Heroes promo-anime. Bandai is outright paying Toei for episodes which can only be used as commercials, rather than just partially sponsoring a new tv series like they do with many other franchises, like PreCure or Digimon, which shows pretty clearly that Toei still isn't willing to do a new Dragonball tv series without Toriyama's name.

The problem isn't just Toriyama. After GT, Toei itself doesn't want to go on without him. It's why Super only happened after Toriyama himself took the initiative of being involved in production again with Battle of Gods and Revival F. If one day they dump that fear and decide to go forward with non-Toriyama arcs, there's also the possibility the staff will want to do their own stories, rather than just remake an old anime. Just look at Heroes. Bandai has no problems sponsoring entire episodes that are just commercials, and can't even be licensed for broadcast or anything else to recoup costs, and yet Toei didn't make it an actual tv series.

The movies are still more canon than the tv series, since they had Toriyama directly supervising (BoGs) or writing (Revival F) the script. Several changes introduced by the tv show were dropped later on by the tv show itself, like how they attempted to drop Trunks bonding with the Pillaf gang from BoGs, only to have them living with him when getting to the Trunks arc. That only will happen if Toriyama isn't in charge of the series anymore and whoever takes over is a GT fan. Toriyama couldn't even bother rewatching the Bardock special before writing Minus/Broly. There's no way he will write several arcs based on GT. There's also the issue of how Toriyama's involvement is always highly advertised (like how they brought up Broly originally being a Toriyama design even). GT's villains aren't Toriyama designs.

It's clear Toriyama only thought about the whole "obsessed with fighting" part of Goku by the 23rd Budokai right before he went ahead with the alien storyline. Thread Sometimes I semi-wish for Wonder Woman to be as strong as Superman (open spoilers for The Boys/Invincible TV series)
Historically, Wonder Woman was nowhere near Superman. She had enhanced abilities, including super speed and strength, but nowhere close to Superman's planetary level. This all changed in the 80s reboot though, when they started pushing her much closer to Superman - it was even when she first was portrayed as being able to fly too to sell the idea of her standing on his level. But, yes, in spite of that, due to her long history of being portrayed as much weaker, she is generally still portrayed one level bellow him in both comics and adaptations. I think part of the issue though, aside from influences of her old portrayal, is that unlike Superman she has no real weakness. Superman has Kryptonite, Red Sun radiation or lack of yellow sun light to depower him, in addition to magic, although this last one depends on the writer. There are several Superman vs Wonder Woman match ups where Wonder Woman easily beats him due to her abilities being considered magic. Injustice is all about a rogue Superman taking over, and yet it only really happens because other heroes stay by his side or even push him forward. When he faced Wonder Woman in the comic prequel he easily lost.

Geese survived falling from a building in Fatal Fury 1. It's more like he dies in RBFF due to getting beaten up and then falling from a building - and he doesn't die in the KoF continuity anyway. RBFF's events generally still happen in KoF though since Terry still takes Rock with him.

Well, at least according to Geese's KoF XIV ending Verse wasn't actually fully awakened and there was some kind of failure in the ritual. The ending also has Hein mentioning that Geese fought by himself during most of the tournament. Of course, Geese's actual role in XIV only will be clear by the time we get the backstories for XV.

I love this one set of openings and endings in Urusei Yatsura. Pure 80s energy. Oddly though this opening and ending only last for 15 episodes which is very odd for a 80s series, since back then openings and endings could last an entire year or even more. They were replaced much faster than any other ones in UY itself, aside from the episodes where they used the movie 1 ending for the tv show.

Earth-2 Superman (1938 Supeman in new stories written during the Silver/Bronze Age) had a super training room since his power was supposed to be due to a super evolved body, rather than sun light, which was an origin introduced after what's considered the Golden Age run. Ever since the early 00s though he once in a while gets a push as an anti-hero rather than outright villain, genuinely fighting to protect his people and trying to make up for his past. The one who is appearing right now is just a Matsuri Rika getting rebooted over and over. Thread What JRPG are you playing right now?
The Keroro anime/manga has many references and also some meta-humor, so the game was kind of keeping its spirit in that sense, although the writing here isn't as good as the actual series. There's even an episode that basically executed this game's premise years before it (the cast diving into a RPG, although in the episode it was mostly a not-Dragon Quest, aside from no turn-based battles. The episode also ended teasing them diving into Persona 3 afterwards, but the story ended there). As someone who actually knows Keroro, I was disappointed by the whole generic JRPG set up though, rather than just making a modern day JRPG. Some Keroro characters were reimagined as npcs/helpers in the game world, but it had issues like the super generic bestiary rather than using aliens and other monsters from the series as enemies, and only the actual main cast appears/gets counterparts.

Thread Are you satisfied with the DLC characters for Smash so far?
I liked Joker's addition, and he is fun to play as a character, but I don't really care for how he was implemented. It just doesn't feel like how he should handle, especially with Strikers on the side too now for another take on real time gameplay with Joker, or Persona 4 Arena for other Persona characters in a fighting game. I really wanted Hero and his implementation with the 4 alts and spell menu was great. I used to love Banjo's games, but it's one of those franchises I never returned to. His implementation in Smash was... pretty standard? He isn't bad or anything but he's there. I really enjoy playing as Terry, and love the SNK-related BGMs brought with him (like the Metal Slug ones) Byleth... I love Fire Emblem, but I really think their implementation in Smash is weak most of the time, and Byleth just continues that trend. A "weapon specialist" Marth was fine when the only other swordsman was Link who had a bunch of gimmick weapons, but I think nowadays that's too restricting considering Smash's overall roster. Min-Min was fun and perfect implementation of ARMs' gameplay in Smash. Sephiroth was great. Steve... I actually love all the gimmicks implemented, but I can't get used to his basic attacks/gameplay. It feels odd. Also didn't care for him being a straight model rip without any attempt at style cohesion, unlike all other Smash characters. I wanted more Xenoblade and really loved we basically got two characters at once with Pyra and Mythra. Overall, I have a positive impression of the pass, although with some complaints.

Actually, in the very beginning of the series those elements popped up in the main "musou/story" modes themselves. There was a rather heavy morale mechanic in earlier Dynasty Warriors games that pushed the player to run around the battlefield rescuing their troops to keep it high. That did end up sidelined though, with the focus going to advancing to triggering the next next cutscene event. Samurai Warriors kept a side-objective system going through all of its main entries (many of them involving timed missions too), but it could be ignored if you didn't care about getting ultimate weapons.

I think the lack of monologues combined with the often bland directing in Gou hurts some of the stuff it tries to do though, when it doesn't involve events that can be visualized in a physical way. The Satoshi scene in the newest episode was clearly meant to be a big moment where Satoko left her old self behind and yet it just comes and goes.

Thread Former Brazilian president Lula convictions annulled, political rights restored, may run in 2022 for president
Lula was charged for corruption - supposedly accepting favors from companies, like an expensive beachfront apartment, in exchange for securing government contracts for them. The issue from the start is that all these accusations were very vague. For example this apartment wasn't legally in his name and he never even actually moved there, but it was ruled he had to go there eventually (in spite of it being left empty for years) and was secretly its owner in spite of never acting as such. The other cases are similar in how much they needed to stretch things to get close to him and how generally they weren't tied to specific acts from Lula as president (In another case, he often visited to a certain rural propriety in Atibaia, and it was eventually ruled that he was acting as its actual owner, due to his presence there, in order to tie some construction work done there directly as favors to him). However, this was done by judges and prosecution tied to the "Operation Lava Jato" which enjoyed great popularity at the time as fighting corruption and so they seemed to be able to make everything stick. Their narrative was further reinforced when appeal courts kept or even increased the sentences. However, as it turns out, there was a huge leak of cell phone messages related to the people involved there. Prosecution and judges were working together from the start and every trial was basically just a public show where nothing the defense could do or ague would change their results. They even explicitly talked about not going after certain people who were considered their "allies". This decision actually avoided going into any of that though, it just stated that the trials started in the wrong location, so all trials have to be restarted from zero elsewhere.

We haven't gotten there yet, but the fact that when Looper Satoko's identity was revealed we were left with a large smirk while she aimed a gun at her friends strongly points to her being very different from the actual 10 years old Satoko. The point of Satoko's entire arc in Gou is probably going to come down to that in her quest to punish or fix Rika after learning the truth about her, Satoko basically became exactly like her (well, even worse), wearing a mask of her old self, while being basically someone else entirely underneath that. They made the Hinamizawa virus treatment from Rika's spinal cord fluid and Satoko also was analyzed due to her anomalous behavior with the syndrome.I think they're basically splitting the Rika from these new loops from the original one. The real Rika is just continuing her life in the original Matsuri fragment (who knows what happened with Satoko, maybe she just vanished or time stopped until she returns one day), while the looping Rika is actually from this Matsuri 2.0 fragment, who remembers her own loops, but doesn't know about Satoko's loop so far (or even only from some later fragment, not even this one yet), which might explain why the glitchy Hanyuu appeared. At the end of Saikoroshi, they decide they'd accept Rika's next death and Rika talks about how manipulating and traveling between fragments was the realm of gods, something she'd leave behind. And yet there isn't a single word about any of that in Gou. Obviously Rika can't do anything about it since she has no choice in these loops, but they didn't even bother mentioning her and Hanyuu's previous resolution. Also, Meta Rika/Bernkastel in Higurashi could still be just Rika. Outside of the manga, she's never explicitly shown as a separate entity. She references herself as different from Rika, but then also says that if Rika's mind breaks she'd disappear, and sometimes goes into first person when talking about Rika's recent experiences. The manga has her as a separate entity with Rika pretty much replacing the player's role in the dialogue with her, but then the anime just had Rika in that scene with no one else, so it's clear there wasn't much of a central direction for it, just different interpretations.Because her inner personality was essentially created by the original loops, so that's not really wrong. As far as the cat name goes, there's a big difference between Rika dressing up as a cat sometimes with Bern who has a cat tail all the time and is often referenced as cat like here. Matsuri Rika gets referenced here as a cat, because, like I said, without Saikoroshi there was never a "I'm not Bernkastel" moment (although Bern up to this point shouldn't be specifically associated with cats anyway). I think the lack of Saikoroshi references and now this possible split timeline could strongly point to them splitting the Rikas into two, rather than having Bern emerge as some abstract manifestation (like Saikoroshi implied with Rika's speculation at the end).

Still, if you read Lambda's description of her blessing for Takano, it really doesn't actually mean anything. It's pretty much a metaphor magic like the ones in Umineko's game boards. (This is Lambda commenting on her meeting with child Takano, who asks her for a guarantee that her efforts would bear fruit)Also, Lambda also says this. She was disappointed Takano was too prudent and didn't straight up ask for magical powers. Compare with Satoko in this episode, who when offered Featherine's power of traveling worlds goes "There's no way this is possible! And if it is, make it happen this instant!"

I think they will be splitting them because Gou Rika probably will become Bernkastel, so nothing good is waiting for her, while Matsuri Rika probably will still get some kind of happy epilogue. Featherine outright called Rika "cat" this episode, which basically confirms my speculation about Gou ignoring Saikoroshi (and also the epilogue scene of Higurashi, but that one could just happen much later). Rika had some minor cat associations, but Bernkastel is the one who is outright called a cat.

I think we'll see this more and more with manga/anime as original creators of successful older series start passing away, although it will take a while to reach late 80s/90s series which was the period with many international successes. He wrote the script for Revival F and the Broly movie and those feature Goten and Trunks even less than the tv show/manga so it's clear that it's all due to Toriyama. I'd guess he regrets retiring the older non-Saiyan characters and introducing them in their place for the Buu Saga.

Yeah, a big part of the issue of the show is that once Adel takes over basically everything grinds to a halt. Ganma conspiracies stop but the invasion doesn't go anywhere until the final three episodes when the Ganmizer betray him.

I guess "Blaze" might actually be "Blades" considering the naming pattern of the other Riders? Anyway, I'd take Ghost over Wizard. Specter and Ghost teaming up against Javert and Alain's initial arc until he powers up through Necrom's energy issues are better than anything Wizard had even if Ghost had a worse first episode and then falls apart later on.Yeah, from the start he had an oddly small presence for Rider, only writing every other arc, but by the late 20s/30s in order to write the summer movie he left for months, causing the show to slow down a lot once the secondary writers wrapped up Necrom's plot. It's clear he kept a lot of plot to write himself, which resulted in a very rushed final arc (add to that wasting two episodes with a movie tie-in too). Still, from the start of the show Ghost was just kind of mediocre, and nothing really stood out, like how in spite of his interest in historical figures most of the time Takeru still played up as a good person forced to fight, rather than being excited about meeting the souls of heroes or anything (he doesn't even talk with them until much later in the show and by their own initiative). Then it gets even worse. The point where the show slowed down also had a very bad status quo for more episodic battles due to the main enemies being the personality-less Ganmizer that could only be killed by Takeru, making the two other Riders useless... and even so they tried to give them focus episodes, which just didn't work when come the last battle of each arc it all came down to Takeru, with them moved to irrelevant side-battles like facing old enemies that aren't a threat anymore.

Jin was rebuilt into a new type of Humagear by some third party unknown to both Ark and Aruto after he was destroyed at the end of the first arc. The recaps directly brought up how not even Ark knows what is up with him. Jin also sent Ark's battle data to whoever it is right after Aruto's first battle against Ark, when he stayed behind and got taken over while Aruto escaped with Fuwa. This build up is really odd considering how late into the show we are, and how the episodes shot after the COVID situation actually gave more spotlight to that issue, suggesting they are actually going to resolve it somehow.

Ghost is pretty bland in the beginning, but I thought it was improving later - the Specter/Ghost team up against Javel was pretty great. The Ganma World reveal initially also drives some excitement into the series, you've got Takeru now actively hating them and being proactive in going after them and all the in-fighting within the Ganma. After a few episodes though, all that is settled down, with Takeru going back to "normal" and the bland Adel taking over completely and stamping out any internal conflict from the Ganma side. Alain's arc actually had a great conclusion though, but everything falls apart after that. Due to the main writer leaving for months, the show goes heavy on episodic two parters, but it was at the worst possible moment for that. The biweekly enemies were basically just robots with the same generic "robotic" personality over and over and they set things up in a way where only Ghost could kill them. It was the worst status quo possible to go into a more episodic direction. Then the main writer returns near the ending which leads to an extremely rushed final arc. The best thing about Ghost's last few episodes are Genm's appearances, even if he was just a generic "cool" antagonist at this point. As far as Wizard goes, I was never fond of it. The battles were just too one sided most of the time for me to get into them. Wizard dancing around while the monsters sit still (only to often still escape somehow due to the two parter formula) just got tiring very quickly. It did have a couple of good moments (Flame Dragon's debut and... huh... Beast saving the day near the end? The crossover epilogue?). Also, I just couldn't see the suits as "cool" when the belt voice was one of the goofiest we've ever gotten (right alongside Ghost's - aside from Necrom). The whole theme of the series also just didn't sit well with me from the start - Rather than supporting people towards their dreams, Wizard was just there to hold them after they lost their dreams, and it's portrayed as something positive rather than tragic which just felt wrong to me (most obvious with Shunpei's situation). Even Beast suffered from this. People remember the last few arcs where they tried to give him some importance, but he was useless for a long time beforehand. Then you have some bizarre plot choices too .

Yeah, it's weird how Zero-One has made the public completely irrelevant after the first arc (outside of the elections two parter). You'd think Zaia would be facing big protests due to the Zaia Spec, rather than everyone just going "ah, it was hacked, that's fine then".

The sprites are the same as in the other Neo Geo Pocket fighters but the backgrounds are so good. I got KoF R2 before this game, and they just stand out much more here.

Because that was just a fragment of Hanyuu. She couldn't even enter in the worlds. Also, the real Hanyuu, who probably is behind Satoko, didn't even want the fragment meeting Rika based on what she said while disappearing. The opening makes it very clear that ''Hanyuu'' won't be friendly when she returns with her wound finally restored (note also how they were highlighting the scratch on fragment Hanyuu's horn in her final scene).

I was worried when it seemed like it was just Pyra by herself, but a duo with Mythra is great since at least there's some of the core concept of the gameplay there.

Now that you mention it, this is the perfect chance for them to throw away Yoshimoto's design forever. SW4 attempted to add scenes where he actually behaves in an imposing way, but they had to do stuff like avoiding showing him directly in those rare scenes. They shouldn't have to fight against one of their own designs. It's a perfect chance to fix Goemon too, but he is a late character and not really necessary in the first place. Shingen Takeda also can get some tweaks, but compared to the others he doesn't a complete revamp.

Thread Thoughts on the "House of M" Marvel storyline
It was supposed to be undone by the Phoenix Force in AvX, but the aftermath seemed to minimize that as much as possible, without outright denying it. So, a few new mutants started awakening, but it didn't really restore all old ones. Mutants were facing extinction again during the Inhumans push shortly afterwards. Currently though due to the Krakoa status quo, and the cloning process they're using, there are thousands and they have their own nation.

I mean, almost all game players catch Pokemon in a way that's closer to Go's than Ash's (even if Go isn't exactly accurate either since he often skips the battle part due to Pokemon Go). It's odd to me some people think Go is morally wrong. You're basically criticizing the basis of the franchise.

I know they're games, but it's still a core part of the experience, not just some side mechanic. I always thought it was odd the anime chose to dump that specific element. Regarding the razor leaf scene, Cut could be used to remove tall grass in old games (up to gen III, I think). Although in that case it was more like cutting up their habitat to make them go away since the point was avoiding encounters.

They already overcompensated when the rest of Ash's team turned into trash during the finals and the Lysandre battle. That all seemed to be mostly in favor of giving Pikachu focus (well, alongside Greninja).

Also, regarding game references, we just had the Fighting Dojo from Saffron in the anime, but this time much closer to the game versions than in previous anime appearances basically ignoring them (no Terri, Karate Master has a new design and never met Ash before). It's kind of weird when we also get some episodes directly referencing previous series.

It's not like the style of the anime ever lined up with anything else in the franchise. Obviously Pokemon Go players do even more catching, but even compared to the mainline games Ash catches very few Pokemon.

As far as tv ratings go, it doesn't make it to the top 10 anime anymore, so we generally don't even know how it's doing specifically compared to the second half of Sun and Moon (which was also mostly out of the top 10 too).
