ThreadPressure increases to remove Cecil Rhodes (white supremacist) statute in Oxford
Why do people keep saying this? It's utter nonsense. These statues weren't put up as a reminder of Britain's history, they were put up to specifically commemorate these individuals. They don't even have any context of their vile actions and views. Someone would have to do research to find out. In the thread about the Churchill statue being defaced, many posters said they weren't aware of the things he'd done and said until I posted a Twitter thread outlining a lot of it. If you're so concerned about history, you'd argue for it to be in British schools instead of whitewashing our past in history classes. And as someone else already mentioned, putting up statues that don't idolise monsters, but instead their victims.
