The original poster who started the nuke conversation already edited that part out. Replying to that conversation chain hours after that just perpetuates the nuke conversation, so let's all just move on and get back on topic. Thanks.
1. Disco Elysium: The Director's Cut - This was a game with a fully realized world, compelling characters, and a murder mystery that spirals into so much more. A monumental achievement.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy - More than any other game this year, this game just made me so happy all the way through. Really hope we see a continuation of this wonderful incarnation of these worlds and characters.
3. Mass Effect Legendary Edition - One of my favorite game series of all time, and revisiting it this year affirmed that.
4. Inscryption - Loved the spooky vibes, the mystery, and the slow unfurling of what exactly is going on.
5. Persona 5 Strikers - Despite its musou roots, I was surprised by how much this felt like a direct continuation of Persona 5, both in gameplay and in its heartfelt story. And it was great getting to spend more time with this fantastic cast.
6. Deathloop - This game had an awesome sense of style and flair, and I had a great time figuring out its mysteries and the mechanics of ending the Loop.
7. Life is Strange: True Colors - A wonderful cast of characters and a moving exploration of loss and belonging.
8. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - Love the Ace Attorney games, so I'm so glad we were finally able to play this gem after all this time.
9. The Forgotten City - A fantastic premise, with a much deeper philosophical exploration of various topics than I would have expected. Time loop mechanics can feel repetitive at times, but they did a great job here I think.
10. Shin Megami Tensei V - The press turn system is one of my favorite battle systems ever, so it was great to get to revisit that here.
Honorable mentions. Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Lost Judgment - Love these games, and I hope to see these diverging styles continue to flourish and improve.
ThreadIs it morally justifiable to have a child when adoption exists as an option?

ThreadSouth Korea statue "A heartfelt apology" to be unveiled in the plant garden that the K-drama "Summer Scent" filmed causes friction
For this particular ban, reviewing the discussion involved, it appears that this user had been reported reported multiple times. To explain the thought process behind the ban, the first post seemed antagonistic ("Who gives a shit?). And in the follow up post, even though the mod team agreed that this user was criticizing the government, we thought that, on balance, saying "the Japanese government should worry about more important things" seemed overly dismissive. Since the subject of comfort women is a painful subject to the people of many Asian countries, and since the statue was ultimately meant to spark discussion, indicating that the Japanese government should ignore the statue (instead of issuing an apology) seemed problematic. However, after getting feedback on this ban, and after consultation with additional staff, we realized we overextended and have opted to undo the ban. Apologies to and to the thread at large.
ThreadGiven JK Rowling Attacking Trans People and Supporting Antidepressants Being “Lazy”, Will You Be Supporting Her and Buying the Harry Potter Game?
We don't find that this framing is conducive to good discussion. It minimizes the pain people are feeling by comparing it to a consumer choice, and leads to dismissive off-the-cuff reactions from people who fail to take the time to understand that the issue in question does in fact affect people, which frequently leave our marginalized members feeling even worse. As such, the thread is locked.

Honestly, if anything, looking at the site's internal statistics, our daily number of active users has risen since the pandemic started. Number of posts made is up as well, along with number of new accounts registering. I imagine the rest of the internet is seeing a lot of the same.
If you want to make a thread about whether or not people are using Era more now that everyone's stuck at home, feel free, but we're doing fine in terms of metrics.

So we received Raccoon's appeal by email, and evaluated his record across both accounts. Yes, it usually is an automatic perm to evade a ban with an alt account, but we believe this is the rare case where he made a real mistake and did not intend to deceive.
We do, rarely, grant permanent ban appeals. Given his good record on this account and the very unusual circumstances, we're going to treat this as a successful ban appeal and allow the current account to remain on probation.
Now please get back to discussing the topic of the thread. Thanks!

ThreadYear End Policy Updates and Community Affairs
, I want to say sorry for being curt earlier. We were juggling a lot of different things at the time, so I didn't realize my post came across as dismissive, but I apologize.
To clarify the point about backseat modding, it was more about asking to personally handle rulebreakers instead of staff. It's great if you want to post positively and/or try to reason with them, but ultimately the mods have to make the decision on what to do. I think Llyrwenne and deepFLAW's posts do a good job explaining why it would be impractical having to wait on bans. Anyway, sorry again for my tone earlier, and I hope this clarifies things.
ThreadYear End Policy Updates and Community Affairs
Here's the thing. If someone makes a bigoted or inflammatory post, do we wait every time for someone to try to educate them? What if there are dozens in a thread, which can happen if there's a fast-moving, controversial thread. Do we wait for users to try to engage each and every single one before we decide to ban them?
If we do this for each and every bigoted or inflammatory post, what does that mean to the minorities who have to read and endure these posts? Are they also expected to go out of their way to engage and educate these users, even though many may not be receptive and are there just to troll?
The truth is that it's simply not possible or practical to reach and engage every single person who posts something bad. And many minorities are sick of being expected to carry this burden, as it primarily falls upon them regardless. So at the end of the day, we're going to err on the side of making the forum a safe space for minorities over one where they have to justify their existence and humanity as we wait on banning bigoted or inflammatory posts. If someone engage them and they do learn and retract their positions, then great, we'll take that into account. But unfortunately, that's just not possible to do for every single case on a forum of this size. So that's where we're coming from on this.

ThreadReuters Poll: Black Male Support for Trump Doubles because Kanye
While we shouldn't disregard it altogether, this could just be statistical noise. From the article:Depending on the sample, you can have a few outliers distorting the entire poll. Ideally you have a bunch of polls so you can look at the average.
This also reminds me of this: Edit: I'd really want to see more polling before making any conclusions. The article makes it seem like there's a causation between the polling results and Kanye's endorsement, which seems kind of premature.
ThreadRUMOR - Morale At GameFreak at an all time low.

ThreadVGCultureHQ: “Gears 5 Will Be Game of the Year 2019”
This thread doesn't seem to be generating productive conversation, and the article in the OP looks like it is from a suspect source. As a result, the thread is locked. As a reminder, here are some relevant guidelines from our FAQ:
Get rid of the ICE director and let someone at Homeland Security redeploy the resources to non-immigration enforcement activities if they deem it desirable and appropriate.
Edit: we seem to have a big problem with white nationalists murdering people recently. We've had a bigger issue with white terrorists than, let's say, Muslim terrorists. Since DHS is in charge of dealing with terrorism, maybe they could deploy ICE resources to work on white nationalism issues instead?
This kind of reminds me of the United States Trade Representative (ustr.gov). They're in charge of negotiating trade deals on behalf of the United States. But, because their raison d'etre is to negotiate trade deals, they'll continue to do so even when there may be no need for any more trade deals to be negotiated. So we end up with way more many trade deals than we need.
In the same way, ICE will work to deport people simply because that's what it was designed to do. I don't see any issue with having it absorbed back into Homeland Security. Then, maybe those resources can be directed towards more useful activities than just going around and breaking up families. We'll still have immigration enforcement when necessary, but it won't be just for its own sake.

Re: Gillibrand, Politico had a profile on her recently:
The gist of it is that she's running her campaign as if this were the general, when this is still the primary where grassroots energy and progressivism leads to the most engagement. And she's doing this because she doesn't want to be typecast as the "woman candidate", but it's a problem when there are 20 other candidates in the field and Gillibrand doesn't excel or draw in any specific demographic better than others.
Hmmm, thinking about it, we don't even know when the betting special is going to drop, so creating an OT ahead of time might not make much sense. I suspect someone will just create the thread when the video gets posted. Also, I'm guessing you'll have to watch and populate the site with the questions, which might take some time. Maybe the thing to do is to post the site in the thread when you're ready, and then PM me (I can probably edit it into the OP for more visibility).
Speaking of OTs though, we will need an EZA E3 OT. I'm not sure anyone's said they're doing that yet. I can help out too but I have no art skills xp. This is the one by last year for reference:

Another great episode! It was super unpredictable up until the very end, which made it exciting.
I actually like that Huber doesn't always pronounce the words correctly or know the answers. It gives the show more personality (compared to a super-produced game show you'd see on TV) and we also get Huber randomly giving contestants coins when he feels like a question is BS.

Thread2020 Democratic Presidential Primary | OT | Ojeda dropped out after 20 seconds
I don't care about the video, personally, but just wanted to say that Republican politicians and operatives operate in endless bad faith and will take multiple contradictory positions, one after the other, if they think it'll give them an advantage in the moment. The goal is to muddle all conversation, so they don't need logical consistency of any kind.
All the candidates will have to deal with this.

We know Chuck Grassley does!
Edit to add:We thought this about Hillary's emails o_o. At this point I've mostly accepted that what gains traction with the American public can be capricious, so it's good to hash out all possible issues in the primaries so that the eventual candidate is prepared for the general.
Thread2020 Democratic Presidential Primary | OT | Ojeda dropped out after 20 seconds
Politics isn't just about policy. The candidate actually matters as well, because eventually a candidate will have to govern as well. The presidency is actually a huge bureaucracy (look at how much chaos there's been due to the government shutdown; and not just that, the president has a wide latitude in determining day-to-day policy [e.g. IRS rules, immigration rules, etc.] and how those policies are enforced).
With Bernie, I see him as more of an activist type, which is a hugely important part of politics. He's articulated a view that has helped shift the entire party leftward. But I think that hobbles him as a politician that would actually need to govern (because he would have to make compromises, and as an Independent he doesn't have the relationships within the party [vs an establishment Democrat] to quickly staff up these huge bureaucratic agencies with competent people that he knows and trusts). This is why I'm more on the Warren train. She's more left than most of the other field (aside from Bernie) but also has experience with bureaucracies (see the CFPB) and as a result will better know how to use these levers of power to quickly enact good, progressive policy on the Cabinet level.
With AOC, I like her a lot, but I'm really interested to see whether she remains an activist-type who pushes the Overton window to the left, or if she'll work within the party to build coalitions to get the most progressive legislation possible passed (so it's like a Bernie path or a Pelosi path). Another reason to like her is that she has a much better understanding of intersectionality and is great at articulating those points to the general public. So yeah, excited to see how things go.
Thread2020 Democratic Presidential Primary | OT | Ojeda dropped out after 20 seconds
Being able to build coalitions is probably more important because you need a bunch of people to agree with your points and vote with you in order to enact good policy. Twitter is extremely unrepresentative of the entire population. As are the posters here, I think (I include myself here!).
I do think a lot of the arguments are storms in a teacup and that most people will be happy to vote for any Democratic politician (including Bernie in this group) against a Republican in the presidential election. There's nothing like a common enemy to unite us, and after 2016, I think most people won't want to take any chances.
Re: 2020 primary
Also, wow, this feels like it's been one of the most consequential news days in a long time (I am most pleased by the government being reopened; hope all those struggling families get support ASAP).
Thread2020 Democratic Presidential Primary | OT | It's a little early in the race for religious cults isn't it?
I'm not a Bernie fan, but I think his branding is fine, given that he's been operating this way for decades and the party at large seems to be fine with him. Bernie can still be a team player (see his work challenging various provisions in the Republican health care bill a while back with the Parliamentarian).
And given that we have politicians like AOC and Rashida Tlaib, both DSA members who also are part of the Democratic Party, I'm not worried that Bernie's independent affiliation is going to influence others to leave the party either. So, like pigeon, I don't think this particular issue is really worth worrying about.
Of course. But I'm also not a woman, so it doesn't matter as much whether I accept the explanation or not. Is Mike Pondsmith an authority on women's issues? I thought we were discussing the cultural context of, for example, the casual use of the c-word. Yes? Have you heard of "death of the author"? For a lot of people, the reaction of a person to a work is completely divorced from the intent of the creator. Plus, a lot of creators may have stereotypical and harmful views of certain groups and that filters into their works.
Sure, and as I mentioned in the post, intent of the creator doesn't matter to me. If some minority group takes offense to their depiction in a work, then I'm inclined to listen to what they have to say.
Eh, a lot of creators just sell the rights but don't have any input (or have limited input) in the hands on creation of the works using their IP. Also, even if he had approved the use, that wouldn't really matter to me because intent doesn't matter if some minority group finds the use of something as offensive.
I do wonder if this was set in Australia, for example, if the use of the c-word wouldn't elicit such a strong response from people. But if you ground your fantasy/futuristic game with elements of real life, then you can't divorce the reactions to your game from those real-life elements in the current cultural context. Given that the gaming industry is notoriously bad on women's issues, I'm absolutely not surprised that there are people criticizing the game, and it's disappointing that so many people are trying to shut down discussion on that.
Given that the game is set in Northern California, what does the C-word being used in Australia have to do with anything?
If the argument that the use of the word is "authentic" then that rings false to me because as someone living in Norcal, I only ever hear the word used as a slur against women. So extrapolating it into becoming common usage in the future doesn't work for me, and it was really jarring to me when I heard it in the demo. It feels like CDPR is trying to be edgy and the inclusion of the word wasn't done in any meaningful way (in terms of addressing gender issues).
Otherwise, I've only watched the demo once on my tiny phone screen and I'm looking forward to watching it again to catch all the details I've missed.

ThreadUS PoliERA 2018 |OT13| It's the Treason for the Season
I won't discount the possibility that some in the party may be compromised (especially given what we already see from Butina and the NRA), but it could also be that these politicians are looking forward to their next lobbying or consulting job. This may require deference to Trump, given that Trump has to approve of any laws that lobbyists want signed and we know that Trump is a vindictive person and will sabotage people who cross him.

ThreadUS PoliEra |OT12| How Nancy Got Her Gavel Back
I don't think anyone is owed credentials. When Pelosi moved up in leadership, it was because she worked hard and ran against incumbent leaders, against their wishes. And she won. Obviously, it's a good idea for her to train more of next generation's future leaders, but if there's someone out there now that's competent enough to challenge her for the Speaker position, then that's on them to do so.
Oh, that's great news! I also interpreted the tutorial instructions to mean that no one can earn rainbows in any of the co-op modes. They should probably clarify the tutorial language if a bunch of people are getting the wrong impression.
Regarding the camera, I agree that they need a more zoomed out view, but I'm finding that with panning, it's actually not that bad so far (just mildly annoying; I'm still relatively early though). Still, glad that they're addressing it. Otherwise, this feels like an updated Pixeljunk Monsters game, which is a very good thing.

Technically these race haven't been called yet (California doesn't certify election results until some time in December since lots of ballots are mailed in). But based on the current vote difference, Cisneros could actually end up winning (he's behind but the vote margin is small). Late mailed-in ballots tend to trend Democratic.

Hair Mouse returns! :eyes:
Enjoyed the episode. Loved the sudden introductions of new characters and wow, that got kind of dark in the middle there xp. Really like how it adds to the world building, though.
I think the bit was more that Noolian was obviously obsessive about Chegduff, but as soon as Takia said she hated it, he calls his mother and asks her to burn all his Chegduff gear. So it's the absurdity and unexpected reaction that's supposed to be funny. Chegduff is just there as more world building flavor and could have been anything else.
Yeah when I played I minimized sleeping as much as possible. My understanding, though, is that citizens can't die from sickness, so you may be able to ignore them the pillar is still alive. Sickness does affect the district's health, though, and if the district falls into critical state then a bunch of people die/leave because the district is lost.
For resources, I found that I ended up with a lot of items that I didn't use (e.g. screws, glass vials, etc.). You can sell those and then buy resources you do need, like weapons parts and various chemicals used for crafting medicines. Whitechapel's pillar has the best chemical prices, I think, but other vendors do sell those if you really need some.
I remember the early game being pretty difficult, but I got through it by upgrading my stamina/health mostly and playing defensively (hitting once or twice and then dodging away). It was slow but it worked.
My main skills were also mostly defensive: autophagy, coagulation (to stun bosses for a moment), blood barrier (to absorb a hit or two). My main damage dealers were claw and the abyss ultimate.
I also used the stake to stun a lot. When you bite someone, you're invincible so that gives you blood and also lets your stamina charge back up. Good luck!
Great OT! Glad to hear these positive impressions. I can deal with some lack of polish, especially if the characters and story are interesting, and it sounds like they are. I'm most curious as to how extensive the narrative branching is, and how hard it'll be to do a full pacifist playthrough. I'll probably eat a few people in my first playthrough though.
The gas tax was passed by the legislature, and if I remember correctly, it did not poll well at the time (because tax increases are unpopular in general). Like Kirblar said though, Rs are desperate because there aren't really any competitive statewide state and federal races (no R in the Senate race, and there's no way the R is going to win the governor race). So to try to gin up turnout, the Rs decided to try to push a repeal of the gas tax through the proposition system (which is voted on by everyone).
The repeal was polling well back in May, but CA Rs have stopped running on it which means that polling has likely gone the other way. There are a lot of interest groups that normally compete like unions and businesses that all want more infrastructure spending.

Thanks for the suggestions, all. I don't believe I've missed any scenes but I'll double check. If I did, though, I hope there's at least a big "NEW" sign so I can find it easily o_o.
I planned to do all the squad stories and skirmishes anyway, so if the missing scenes still don't pop up after I'll just youtube them.
So I finished the main storyline, but I'm having trouble accessing the true ending. So are there additional requirements to get the true ending that I've missed, or did I just get hit with some sort of bug?
I think so; most of the discussion for story-based games was on general impressions. For RDR2, they stuck with the early hours (since that's how far Ben and Ian have gotten), and they avoided story spoilers for The Missing. There is some talk on things like locations and themes, which I didn't find spoilery, but YMMV.
Also, this was a fantastic Frame Trap episode. I like that Ian is on the main podcast every week, but he only chimes in every once in a while on that. So it was nice for him to physically be at the desk and give his impressions on various topics. In particular, I thought he added a lot to the Rockstar crunch conversation, which felt like an extension and a more in-depth discussion of what they touched on in the EZA podcast a couple of weeks ago.
Finally, Box Peek and the No Redemption musical, both are a 10.
It wasn't just you; I noticed that too. They danced a bit around the basic issue (in contrast, Ian was very explicit in his Tweet recently on the news that brought up this subject), and I think Kyle may have been a little too generous in assuming the best of CDP in each example, but it was good overall discussion and I'm really glad they brought it up.
This is two weeks in a row that they've brought up some sticky subjects, and I just want to say how much I appreciate them discussing these things, even if parts of it are sometimes done in an inartful way (no one is perfect on every issue all the time). At the very least, I always know that they mean well and I learn things from their perspectives, especially since they're immersed in the games industry. And it's a welcome change from the past few months when it seemed like they were avoiding controversial subjects altogether.
You know, I've been meaning to increase my pledge for a while; I think I'll do so right now.
Hmm, they said that Jones was "on assignment" in last week's group stream, which I assumed meant that he finally got a review code. This was last Tuesday, which would track with Hasney saying that was probably when Giant Bomb got their code also.
Jones ended up on the podcast that day (shot after the group streams), so if he really was on assignment, it didn't involve extensive travel at least.
Actually, I thought that, but checking this list:
We've gotten Spiderman, Life is Strange 2, and Dragon Quest 11 in the past two months. So as many games as non-games, after accounting for Daredevil. Really happy with their output on this recently (5 of them alone in October). Also, kudos to Blood for keeping that list up to date! It's listed on post #2 of the thread (along with the Cup of Jones episode guide) in case anyone wants to find it again.
Agree with this post. I don't think he was directing his comment at everyone who gave criticism (myself included), and I viewed it as general frustration, but still, it wasn't cool and venting like that should probably have been done offline. To be fair, though, there have been some seriously OTT reactions.
Changing topics, it's really encouraging to see that they addressed the crunch issue in the recent podcast, and in depth too. I've always thought that they do a good job in discussing sensitive issues, so I was sad that they seemed to shy away from them recently. Glad I was wrong in this case! I'm almost caught up with my EZA backlog so I hope I can listen to it soon xp.
This is a really weird post. We know Damiani can be critical towards Nintendo games, like his 4.5 star review for Breath of the Wild and his 2.5 star review for Star Fox 2, both of which he got criticism for. And we know he has interests outside of Nintendo, like all his coverage (both reviews and streams) of MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV. He's given good scores to games like Shadow of the Colossus (5 stars), Rime (4.5 stars), and Ni No Kuni II (9.5), all of which are clearly not Nintendo games.
And it's not like the games media and entire forums like Resetera don't ignore hugely successful games like Madden, FIFA, and Ghost Recon in general; this is not an issue that is exclusive to EZA.
I do think that Starlink being a mutiplat that has significant exclusive content for one console makes it a weird edge case. Blood said that they got it the weekend before, so adding that in, I can understand why the review turned out the way it did (I gave my criticisms earlier in the thread). But using it to try to discredit all Damiani's future reviews is absolutely ridiculous.
Honestly, regarding things like crunch, or the various stories on sexual harassment in the industry, I don't think they really need to elaborate and discuss much if they don't want to (because yes, these things are bad, and that might be all there is to say). But not even acknowledging that these stories exist seems like a glaring omission, especially for a podcast on gaming and industry news. It's not like they haven't covered sad stories like studio closures in the past by basically saying "this sucks" and then moving on, so I don't buy that they couldn't do this for other issues as well.
They could even just point the audience to the original stories so that the people that are interested can go search out the articles themselves. But instead it's all in Cup of Jones, which is paywalled. Just seems odd, is all.
True, but they've ignored various stories throughout the months, so much so that some people are preemptively assuming they won't cover the crunch story on the podcast (I am part of this camp, admittedly). And others are providing justifications for them not covering this crunch story. So it's definitely a pattern that is being noticed. Just some food for thought.
Yeah I watched the review and honestly, I think this just might be a weird edge case. These days, there aren't that many multiplatform games released with substantial amounts of exclusive content. And if the Switch version is what Damiani played, then it makes sense that he would talk about Star Fox because that was part of his gameplay experience.
On the other hand, I think it's fair to say that the review itself was framed around the Star Fox content. It literally ends with: "If Nintendo is smart they'll continue this collaboration with Ubisoft, so hopefully next time it'll be a dedicated Star Fox project instead of a tacked-on console exclusive." And because references to Star Fox were mentioned throughout the review, I didn't know sometimes which points were exclusive to the Switch version and which points applied to all the versions. Basically, I didn't get a good sense of how my experience with the game would differ if I got the Switch version vs the PS4/XBox version, and whether the score would even apply to the non-Switch versions. Maybe this would have been better released specifically as a Switch review.
I do wonder, though, if maybe they didn't get a PS4/XBox copy to compare with or maybe there wasn't time to do a comparison. Regardless, this is definitely something to think about for the future in case there are more multiplats with significant exclusive content on one platform.
Hah, you forgot to mention that there's a Life is Strange 2 spoiler mode coming out even sooner with Huber, Blood, and Elyse!
Also, looks like they didn't get the studio that they put in a bid for, unfortunately. However, Jones did mention on stream that they're already looking at two other locations.
Honestly, for the $50k goal on Patreon, the phrase "create new content" is so general it's pretty much meaningless. If we're splitting hairs, then technically every new stream they do or any new video they post is new content. I think the more important part comes after that ("create new content "), and I don't think it's wise to read too much beyond that.
All this discussion on what a new studio would mean has been good though. It's been such a nebulous concept for so long so it's good to recalibrate our expectations now that it's getting closer to reality. Realistically, though, we won't know how everything will play out until the Allies secure an actual studio space. I think this is why they've been cagey on the specifics of what will change; location/size/layout will all have an impact and it would be bad to promise something and have it not be possible later if the actual studio they get precludes it.
This is also why it's smart that they haven't given too many details about Huber's game show. Full Playthrough Fridays and the Live Guest Show are straightforward, but the game show will have to fit into the studio space, and they don't have that yet! Plus, I've always been skeptical that the goals themselves are a primary motivator for people to become/stay patrons. I think they're good in signaling that EZA has ideas on how to further grow/improve (which gives people confidence to join up), but it's the tier rewards, the desire to help out EZA, and/or even just advertising (which they've done recently with the Spiderman Spoiler Mode promo and the studio update video) that increase patron numbers. So not having details on the game show isn't super important yet, IMO. But it will be once the Patreon total starts nearing that goal.
Given what it takes to produce a Clips episode, I can completely understand why it was axed. Producing it has a low skill barrier (watching the clips, compiling the best ones, and then editing them together) but is probably extremely time consuming given that they stream a lot and viewers can get clip-crazy (not to mention there being duplicate clips). Honestly, that's something you'd assign to an intern whereas the rest of the Allies are doing more high-value work. And plus, it understandably never really reached the quality of what FarisR does. So while I enjoyed Clips, it's time to say goodbye!
