So I was at a conference in Mexico two years ago and something which really stuck with me is how I met so many people. The people at the conference more mostly white, but when I care across a black person, I stupidly offered a different type of handshake. Basically, instead of the normal “dead fish” handshake... I gave him the “hand wrestler” and he literally just looked at me in disgust and didn’t want to shake my hand. I was a little confused for a while, because in my home country, I’d shake my black friend’s hands like this all the time and they’d be cool with it. I guess in mexico, that particular guy didn’t like being treated differently, but I wish instead he just just felt that I was very comfortable around him and if I felt I could, I’d shake everybody’s hand like that. Anyway, I just thought i’d share the thought that maybe I try to shake your hand this way because I thought you’re cooler than the rest, not just cos you’re different. Most of all, I found it strange because I’m usually the different one cos I’m Asian and in my community, I was pretty much the only Asian when I was growing up. I’m drunk.
