Nope. Don't do it dude. Walk away now or forever hold your peace.

I don't know about that. The long term chilling effect for one minority speaking about another is disturbing. For me at least, I'll be weary to comment on these kind of threads for fear upsetting people unintentionally.
If its her real accent I don't see the issue. I know multiple Indian people who have a distinct British accent. They just can't speak English without the birtish accent.
I feel like her blaccent is mostly unintentional and partially part of the way she grew up/who she hung around and how she clowned around. Like it's a part of her, but now she has to suppress spontaneous blaccent. Which is fine for me because I find it and her "yell" talking generally annoying, but I do feel a bit bad for her that maybe people are pressuring her to "be more nomal" or "be more quiet asian like we expect".
she does, watch her interview on TigerBelly, she has a very unique raspy ass twang to her voice
lol i'm 100% sure that you are not. i guess you can find your black friend to cover for you, though. or just use google image search.
As a black person, i dont agree with op but im not sure how to articulate my opinion because it seems like it's either agree or get banned for 2 weeks. But i would say there's a discussion on black culture vs urban culture thats not being had.
Man she’s a woman of color from NYC. There’s no appropriation. We even went to the same college and she’s been like this all her life, as are most BiPoC from major metropolitan areas. This argument surrounding her just seems entirely trivial as a PoC who enjoys her work and most of the “anger” tends to come from white conservatives/suburban types who aren’t exposed to this.
I mean, the context of the two different types of accents are quite different. One is an accent mostly created by white people to make fun of asian people. One is an accent naturally formed in african american communities. Sure, an argument can be made that she appropriated other people's culture, but it makes sense that she wouldn't want to do an accent that's historically been used to mock and belittle asian people, while still being okay with doing an accent which by all intents and purposes, seems to be a positive and revelatory one. Also, it's a tricky subject when it comes to two separate POC groups. If she took something from white people, it wouldn't be weird, but since she took something from african american people, we start getting into the territory of "which of these two groups is the most oppressed".
I must admit, for as progressive as I consider myself on most issues, I find myself often not relating to most of these cultural appropriation threads. I just don’t see this hypocritical at all based on my very limited knowledge. She grew up in Queens, New York and seemingly was a part of the sort of culture we associate the “blaccent” with, or at least it became an exaggerated part of her personality or performance. She didn’t grow up in an Asian country, so it would be weird for her to put on an Asian accent if she’s not comfortable with it because it feels inauthentic to her or she doesn’t want to be typecast. I think ultimately the reason I’m often dubious about these sorts of topics is it feels oddly like cultural segregation. Like unless you are of a certain cultural or ethnic background, you can’t use any of the trappings that we associate with that culture or else it’s somehow wrong. That’s really odd and not helpful or healthy I don’t think. Obviously there’s real, harmful cultural appropriation that has happened and continues to happen. But I think for some there is no middle ground or nuance and personally I find that really troubling.
“Blaccent”? That has the same bogus energy as an inner city child telling another they “sound white” when speaking proper English. I agree with the term “minstrel act”, I’m shocked I never considered it that.
The internet hates when people change opinions. You’re not a hypocrite for growing as a person lmao
Yes this what we should be focusing on. Not the situation in Afghanistan, or COVID destroying parts of America… but this, which impacts so many people and is super pressing. Jesus Christ.
Black culture has and is the cool thing everyone likes. From rap, graffiti, clothes to this way of speak... It's only normal that if it finds success with other cultures these cultures will appropriate it. That's a good thing as long as it's not done in mockery or with ill intent. I haven't watched the movie of that clip so I cannot say whether the character was mocking black people or not though.
Her quote is specifically about using Asian accents to portray Asian characters. Whether or not her use of a blaccent is appropriate of unrelated to this quote in my opinion and people are intentionally reading her as just saying “I don’t do accents” in order to dunk on her for it.
Probably run by the same conservatives that tried to keep Gunn out of the MCU.
I betting on bored Twitter liberals that do purity tests.
As an Asian-American who grew up in Queens this is like how half of us talked in junior high and high school in order to fit in. It’s dumb headlines from ignorant people.
She was really great on Shang-Chi. This seems like one of the more uncontroversial controversies I've seen brought up in recent times. Then again, I'm a white man who probably doesn't get it.
Pretty much what I am seeing. what is a blaccent?
I don’t know. There are true monsters in the world, walking among us, full of hate. Awkwafina seems generally good. She picked up an affectation as a young rapper, as do so many people. I don’t think she is a problem.
We live in the dumbest timeline of the Multiverse.
Is some marvel fans a handful on Twitter? I hate these things, someone is clearly trying to be a positive force for a marginalized group in media and people, I usually read these with fake intentions, want to try and discredit them for something else.
The blaccent is embarrassing but it's so funny how people are acting like she legit shot a black person. Social media chooses a town witch to act like extremely over dramatic over every year. Meanwhile others are skating by using the same blaccents
Guys guys, we can’t have an Asian woman doing too well now, let’s just bash each other so as to ensure no-one is advancing!
My friend who teaches in a very diverse area of Queens says all kids spoke like this. So really, what is the issue?
I have to wonder what would happen if Boseman mentioned his condition to the higher-ups. Like, this wasn't out of nowhere. He was diagnosed in 2016, the same year he first appeared in Captain America Civil War. Granted, filming was done in 2015, before the diagnosis, but he had a movie lined up in 2018 and roles to play in the Avengers duology. Though I have to wonder if they didn't expect Black Panther to blow up the way it did. Still, Boseman knew he was on limited time, and should have mentioned this. Frankly, the fact future movies won't have T'Challa just feels wrong.
Sorry i'm not hip with the latest new piece of mediocrity hitting radio the kids are digging. P.S. So is the ignore button if you're that bothered by me not liking Lil Nas X that you felt the need to post about it.
Name checks out. How long do you want people to wait before it's okay to speculate?
Cute John Wick? They're really leaning into that unlikely action hero actor /actress thing, like that Odenkirk movie. Trying to get a movie with a female lead cancelled? Nice try incels.
You choose the home experience so you can lay in your underwear and compensate for your lack of bladder control according to your last post, and now say you can't concentrate because the screens to big. It seems like a you problem.
If you're a 12 year old girl? Sure. But nothing is topping this masterpiece:
And until anything is proven by an official investigation, I’m taking that blog with a grain of salt. You’re free to believe what you want, or you can add me to your ignore list
Unfortunately, you'll probably just be banned. Happened to me at least twice for pointing out that Reade's story had holes.
Sorry Bobby, that's whataboutism. This thread only for calling other cultures barbaric. This is not a safe space for introspection or action. /s
Will I get banned for pointing out that far more dolphins die getting caught in tuna nets?
Lol at the warning and ban, I guess some meat eating mod got offended. I'll gladly take mine you trash.
shhh, obvious ethical implications are not allowed.
there is a weight lifter that couldnt win in men but now is a woman... its an unfair advantage for other women.
Unnecessary and immoral when those much more in need around the world have got no Vaccine.
Yes, call out a foreign community as "Barbaric" but don't think about the millions of dolphins and whales that capitalism has killed.
wooooooooooooooooooooooooow 120hz what an invention, never seen before wowowowow. fk off apple
New Jersey's deaths per million have been practically frozen and currently sit at 3,049. Mississippi is at 3,016 and charging hard. You can do it, Mississippi!
Someone's got to do it and I'm not that bothered about being banned. Stop being such a cunt.
I mean, it works both ways, and it isn’t particularly hard to find you doing the same in other comments. So maybe ease off the criticism of using that word a touch. e.g.
Lmao, Jesus Christ. I honestly don’t think you actually believe the bullshit you’re typing so you can keep it to yourself and stop pretending to be offended. I hope you can get over whatever I said in the past that bothered you, because you’ve already admitted that those words aren’t the cause. I adore how I’m “losing the argument” because I quoted the dictionary. Good lord lmao, fucking clown.
That someone as nasty as Nikki Minaj doesn't know what an STI looks like is pretty surprising to me... not gonna lie
This is abhorrent, but remember that "not-as-cute" animals are slaughtered in their millions daily as well. If you are able to, please consider adopting a plant based diet and avoid using animal produce to help eliminate animal suffering.
