The condescension towards people who will play this game for the first on Switch is amazingly hilarious. There's quite many similarities from the methodical movement to the restricted item usage and management. Both series reward careful planning and punish the player for any mistakes.

was ok. Impeccable execution and soundtrack, but the dead simple story offered no surprises nor many things to reflect upon. was the movie of the year, amazing acting, incredible script supported by the beautiful cinematography. There's a very profound message about forgiveness in the movie and it echoes on all levels and with every scene. I can imagine this movie being a healing experience for many as well as a moment of learning. I can't imagine the last time a movie was so elegant in pulling the strings of the audience, people laughed and cried in the same scenes no matter how old they were... I have to see this one again since it might be one of the best movies of the decade for me.

Funny answer: when I forgot my swimming pants to locker room and walked nude to swimming class. Grim answer: I guess one of the many times I was bullied. Thread I really wish that video games had more non-violent options. (And entertainment in general)
There are games where violence has consequences and the characters don't feel like just glorified targets. There's a big difference in the violent acts of let's say Shadow of Colossus and Call of Duty, one could definitely give kids some questionable experiences and models, while the other might make you even regret your actions. Violence in MGS3 might seem downplayed at times and even comical, but there are moments in the game where the script is aware that killing is wrong and you have consequences both in gameplay and storytelling levels.

Very few games have surpassed what the Prime series went after. I'd love a continuation of that style, restricted areas with lots of geometry and baked lighting to fight the limitations of the hardware. Keep it stylized yet creepy. Doom has some really good environment assets in the Mars levels and I'm not surprised why people refer to that game when they think of Metroid.

Thread Star Wars: The Last Jedi |OT3| The War is Just Beginning (Unmarked Spoilers)
Weird. The ”canteen” scene in TFA has just the right mood (never mind the trash character Maz). Practical effects everywhere, puppets, grime, robots the vistas... it all feels authentic and just as good as the OG trilogy. Then the casino in TLJ goes full prequel trilogy with the abundance of CGI and uninspired designs (I realise it’s supposed to be a rich place). Feels like a complete different set designer work. Watching TFA again it reminds me that the biggest flaw in the new trilogy are Rey and Finn or more importantly their lack of interesting personality traits. Rey is completely omnipotent in both piloting ships, fighting even without any training and of course her pure good intentions. Finn is just there to connect the average joe to this fantasy world. Solo had a similar role in the OG trilogy but had tons of character.

The egg and the chicken problem. Is it bad management or is it the amount of people, I don't think you can state that it's just "bad management", when it's clear that perfect management doesn't even exist. You can't just assume that management gets better over time when we have developing nations demanding (rightfully so) higher standard of living which in turn demands even more resources. Controlling the population is the single most effective way to combat the inevitable end of resources. It's just politically unpopular and every major religion is against it.

Art, culture, love and many other aspects of life that cannot be made into an equation or science don’t require religion or faith in a higher being. It’s hard to make any real calculations, not just because it’s impossible to measure the human suffering caused by religions vs lives saved and humanity preserved by it. Besides religions seem to be an integral part of human societies so it’s not like we can get rid of it. Also some sects (like lutherism) evolve more than others and allow gay/women as priests.

Thread The amount of 'noise' in today's world
(yeah I don't know how to quote quotes lol) Evaluating content can be elitistic for sure especially when you judge what others consume. It's not completely futile though since most people would prefer to consume better stuff and get better experiences in life. The discussion about this subject gets often heated since nobody wants to hear that their favorite media isn't 'good' and shifting ones tastes/habits requires a lot of effort. Many people believe that as long as they are enjoying themselves it's all that matters. I guess that's a by-product of consumerism since IIRC before that people were more collective minded and valued content with metrics like "how beneficial/harmful is this to me and the society". Not that I would ever want to go back to any 'good olden days' but I do wish to challenge my own tastes and expand them whenever possible. Also I would love to detect patterns and media that takes away from my ability to express myself and think critically (something that this 'noise' could very well do over time).

Thread The amount of 'noise' in today's world
Curated content. You might have a movie buff friend who you can ask for recommendations about good movies. And by "good" I don't mean "recommend me something I already like", I mean good in a sense that they are classics, pivotal titles, experimental titles or otherwise somehow significant pieces of art. Same goes for any other medium, find a good curator. And to balance out my daily intake of internet I need evenings where you just sit down with people and talk without your smart phones or any other distractions. Preferably with a wide group of different people so it doesn't devolve into an echo chamber at some point.

He’s not protecting women in general. He’s protecting his wife and his relationship. He’s not doing it because he thinks ill of women. Thread Jordan Peterson - The "Intellectual" We Deserve
I don't agree with him on many subjects, his views on women and minorities are really backwards for example. And he is purely because he is so influential now. Is he the first guy entertaining the ideas he does? Of course not. Is he the first with the combination of charisma, intelligence and expression? For our generation maybe so (as a person advocating the ideas he does, not as a public figure in general). I am not interested in him as a person (and would most likely not enjoy talking with him), I am interested in the bigger phenomena of who he represents, appeals to and how he shapes our discussion about everything relevant (free speech, human rights, tolerance) at the moment. Us (Era) chiming in is important. People are reading his stuff for many reasons, some come from libertarian point of view, some for the self-help concepts and most likely some for much darker reasons. His books and ideas can lead to a bad path where the end result is something like the alt-right movement. However implying that everyone who read his book or watched a few videos is a bigot and a nazi is wrong. Saying that means that you are just reinforcing the propaganda that the world is simple, black and white without any spectrums and consists of and . Which is a recipe for disaster in my opinion.

How many books have we read during our lifetimes where the views of the author weren't in line with ours, but there's still something to be learned from them. It's up to you to be a critical reader. I might read his book one day just to see what the fuss is about and to be able to discuss it better (just like you have done I assume). I would agree with the flexibility, but traditionally a "flexible" card in CCG's is something that is relevant in multiple situations and phases of the game. A vanilla 3/3 for 3 is not good in any state of the game, mediocre at best in turn 3. And it's funny you brought up magnetize, since you can do "charge damage" with magnetize which is probably why it's a viable mechanic (maybe). Actually Keysers idea of a "kicker" cost is great. Now that would truly make the cards flexible, a cheapish rush minion for early board control (or sometimes just a vanilla dude) and a more expensive version of it that can hit face late game. Zilliax is good because it's clearly undercosted for how much it does, not because it has rush.

Thread Any interest in a hunting thread?
My point is that in neither cases you don’t need to hunt. You choose to hunt because you enjoy the process. The kill is then used however you wish, either as gourmet food or a trophy on the wall (often both). For the animal it’s all the same, it was killed because the hunter wanted to hunt. Other motives are more justified ethically like hunting meat because it’s scarce, lowering the population of a certain harmful species and so on. My grandparents hunted because meat was expensive and harder to come by. For me hunting would be purely an interesting activity and the food a delicacy.

It wouldn't be the same game yes, but whether it's an improvement or "undermining" depends on the player. None of those features break anything. They are quality of life additions to old games that were designed for completely different platforms and play sessions. Not to mention for different people. My bad, I meant the european empires in the context of conquest of americas. And I did not mention intellectual nor cultural superiority anywhere, as I said before absolutely nothing made the british or europeans more fit to conquer the world. The will and need to explore the world, (something that nobody initially saw as very profitable investment) fill the maps (first recognizing that they are not complete) and the admittance that they are ignorant of many things is what enabled many of the conquers they did. That didn't make them better people than anyone else, but it did make them more efficient in exploring and conquering.

That's because their military-scientific-exploration mindset pushed them farther than any other empire. There was nothing preventing china from conquering the same lands the British did (with the same end result no doubt), but they thought they already knew everything and that their world map was complete. The realization that we are ignorant (science) pushed British to explore and in the end conquer pretty much everyone (with the bloody results we all know). Cognitive dissonance existed before empires.

It all depends on the colour palette and values as a whole. There's practically no limitations on what colour a particular object is as long as everything else supports it. Variation in the tones gives you tools to create different time of days and seasons for the same material, you can look at different areas for example in Zelda games and notice the grass can be teal, bright warm green or even brown depending on what atmosphere they wanted to create. That teal grass is quite extreme in comparison to everything else in the pokemon picture which creates the nice contrast and redability, but I can see why some people would prefer a more limited palette (like let's say Link to the Past, which had way less contrast in the green fields). Similar bright teal grass can be found in Minish Cap also, but there the overall colour balance is better in my opinion.

If a devs communication strategy causes the fan community to become confused, then that strategy wasn't at all. The reason to make the grass colder in tone is to increase the readability of the visuals on a small screen. The game is delightfully clear and fast to read.

I think SotN did a lot to innovate the genre. And I agree that HK might be seen as the latest great IP in the genre and that is a big achievement. As time passes however the less radical games in the genre tend to get obscured. In HK's favour, the audiovisual design is so strong that it might actually make it a lot more relevant than many other recent Metroidvanias. It's harder than many modern metroidvanias, but compared to Super Metroid and SotN, it's not hard at all :b

Plenty of reasons. Let’s Go seems to have an art style closer to Go and the strategy behind that and the simplified catching and battling is to cater to Go players, lapsed fans and kids new to the franchise. You are right in that MCU movies aren't for me. I used to like many of the more 'auteur' style superhero movies like the Raimi Spiderman trilogy and Nolan Batman movies. V For Vendetta and even Hulk by Ang Lee were interesting to me. The MCU style of blending everything together to a grey goop is very unattractive to me. Infinity War was entertaining because of actual stakes and the fact that they didn't really have time for any filler between all the different characters. Iron Man was also pretty fun before the final fight, but that's an ancient MCU movie by now. I watch all kinds of movies all the time to keep my mind open. Took my time with the story, finished yesterday. The end sequence was great, though not very challenging. I think I’m in the minority when I say that some of the worlds weren’t that good, the forest area with its bizarre music choice, the snow kingdom that was just flat out boring to explore and the water kingdom that barely had any platforming going on. All in all this is a mario game with the least focus on challenging platforming and sometimes it felt like a chore to just roam around looking for collectibles without any challenge. Despite the lack of challenge I enjoyed the creativity and the polish this game offered, it’s much better than 3D World, but for me the Galaxy games offered better challenge, better music, bosses and themes. Not the same kind of revelation as BotW was for me at all.

I want to make sure I am coming across clear, if the MAGA symbol/hat is used as a hateful symbol by enough people its meaning changes. So if the situation in US is indeed like you guys argue, then there's no defending wearing that stuff. It's not ok. But still there's a difference in being ignorant and hateful. It's sad if an ignorant or hateful parent buys their kid that cap but that kid doesn't turn into a racist in that very moment. If they learn what it means and still continue to wear it, then they have made a conscious choice towards all the bad things the symbol represents. Calling out the symbols and educating people helps them to trash the symbol.

No. I vastly prefer Obama to Trump, but the logical fallacies are plain to see. For example my art school teacher back in day hated Obama (for the drone strikes) and called us naive brats when we tried defending him. He would've likely thrown us out of class if we wore "hope" merch. For him Obama wasn't any better than George W. Obviously Trump is so bad that any previous presidents look great in comparison, but that doesn't make everyone who buys his merch a racist nor a nazi. That is a really convenient and b&w way to look at things. I would never defend any form of discrimination. Obviously my comment was from a fan perspective. As a dev I’m happy as long as Retro remains profitable.

The game that no-one asked. Goddamn Ninty just give Retro some ambitious project, they have always delivered!

Thread Solo: A Star Wars Story |OT| Ron Shot Last [SPOILERS]
My bad, I meant us viewers. They tried to drama up some of those deaths, but the characters were too minor for me to give a shit :b Harrelson was a bigger character, but so one dimensional that I was glad he's dead and not appearing in any of the sequels.

Thread Devil May Cry 5 Reveal Trailer (PS4/XB1/PC - Spring 2019)
There are differences in how realistic human faces look even when they are based on scans. I'm not a huge fan of how Nero looks here either, but I understand they have tech and direction based on REVII here. Uncharted 4 is the king of realistic facial animations and they are much more stylized than the stuff we see here.

Yeah it's not like the series has ever been stagnant with the songs. DMC1 was full on gothic horror and DMC3 had that raspy rock song in the beginning that was very refreshing back then.

Thread Mental Health ERA |OT| You are not Alone
I guess I’m depressed. I manage a lot things, I work in a great company with awesome people, I have a few friends, I excercise and eat pretty healthy... but under it all I have a growing sense of emptiness. It can all be traced back to my breakup with my ex that I was with for 8 years, love of my life etc, the usual story. I still love her I guess even though I’ve had relantionships after her. Something about that person changed me and the breakup broke everything. I want to see it all through and live old, but every time I pause to think in between my activities I get the sense that I already lived my life and the one doing all this is just a husk or an automaton. I have no dreams or ambition. Without dreams and hope and passion, you aren’t really living, just existing. Bah I have it great compared to many, but felt good to write something.

Started MTGO again after 5 years of hiatus! When is core coming to there? Played a few swiss drafts in Ixalan and Dominaria (completely blind) and it's as fun as it ever was.

That particular transcript is completely reasonable and goes to show how cherry picking parts of it makes it easy to slam Peterson. Not defending him in general, just an observation of how people behave in this thread.

Well that looked awkward. You would constantly have to switch into the over the shoulder view to check your surroundings and enemy placement. No wonder they ditched that idea.

How would you implement fixed camera angles with free aiming? They made the right choice here, not only do you get (based on the videos) a classic resident evil exploration and puzzles, you also get the great combat edperience or RE4. Best of both worlds.

If it would be only about "our animal nature", we would still eat bone marrow after the lions and hyeenas had their fill. Society and moral standards evolve all the time in fact today faster than they ever had.

Yeah low resolution crap did look better on my old Plasma, but it was also smaller and in the end that old stuff is always gonna look worse than native content. I'm watching Sopranos on 720p (or lower, who knows when it's HBO nordic) and it's fine on my C7. Much better than my friends good Sammy LCD in fact.

Dunno. Some footage/game seems to get blacks crushed in low no matter how you set your brightness/contrast. It can’t be right to accept crushed detail right? Nvm I read wrong

Thread Why women criticise sexualised character designs (READ OP)
Though not exactly "the male equivalent of bayo", Dante in DMC3 made a lot of my teenage male friends uncomfortable and some of them actually hated the story because of him. It was probably the hair, boyish looks and the nipples in the opening cut-scenes.

Not necessarily a "flaw", but just the vision they had for the look of the game. Not every developer wants/needs to cater to HDR. They wanted a really light and soft look for MH and HDR just doesn't jive with it.

Monster Hunter beta looked way too bright in HDR for me on game mode, there was no blacks to be seen anywhere. With the same settings Uncharted looked mind blowing.
