Thread PlayStation 5 System Architecture Deep Dive |OT| Secret Agent Cerny
Some of this wasn't explained in enough detail, but I personally think the reality could be more than a 2% drop in those "worst case scenarios." We'll see later this year. I hope it runs as close to 10.3 teraflops as possible 99% of the time, as it's already 1.7 teraflops behind in performance and that could be a gap for some demanding titles when you start throwing in real-time ray tracing too.

Having been at the source of many Xbox leaks over the past 10 years, I can say none have been controlled leaks.

Well one of the big bets will be how they respond to Stadia, particularly when it goes free. Also, how do they get more games that people love onto the Xbox Series X. Both of these are business model bets that open Xbox up to a potential market that's way beyond consoles. Microsoft has faced similar bets in the past (hello Windows Phone) and made some bad business decisions, but I'd imagine they've learned from those competitive mistakes.

Thread Xbox FY20 Q2: Software & services revenue down 11%. Hardware revenue down 43%. Overall gaming revenue down 21%.
Transactions could refer to both, so Microsoft hasn't really cleared that up. The obvious point is that they were warning about this in Q1 2020, when RDR2 didn't exist. Either way, they're betting that subscriptions will eventually offset this type of revenue dip in the long term. It's a big bet that will involve xCloud this year, and we don't know how Xbox Game Pass will play out.

Thread Analyst Daniel Ahmad: Switch in 34 months estimated to have shipped more consoles than Xbox One in 74 months
Wrong? I never provided numbers, and I was talking about not in my original tweetI'm sure Nintendo pushed a bunch of fresh Switch Lite inventory into channels for the holiday season. Microsoft won't be shipping a ton of new console inventory to retailers because it didn't just launch a new Xbox version in the recent quarter. Either way, I'd expect the Switch has sold through a lot of that inventory to pass the Xbox One. It was close before the holidays, and the Switch will blast past the Xbox One now. Just shows you why having more than just third-party games on your platform really matters.

Indeed. It's also revealing that Microsoft notified shareholders it would stop providing Xbox Live MAU counts just ahead of a bigger push for Xbox Game Pass subs. It's a clever way to hide what's happening, as they have less than a year to test bundles, Xbox Game Pass numbers, and more ahead of Series X launch.

Thread Xbox FY20 Q2: Software & services revenue down 11%. Hardware revenue down 43%. Overall gaming revenue down 21%.
It's both, actually. Microsoft cited a third-party title when gaming revenue was flat in Q1, 2020 earnings. RDR2 wasn't out during Q1, 2019. Fortnite really started growing during June 2018 and through the end of the year, exactly when new players are spending a lot on skins etc. Microsoft's guidance for Q3, 2020 also notes gaming will be impacted again by "lower transaction volume on a third-party title."

Indeed. I don't know for sure on RT, but you only have to look at how good 4K was on PS4 Pro / Xbox One X to answer it. Consoles always aim for unbelievable targets, and never really reach them every generation. Sony made 1080p a selling point for the PS3, and most devs targeted 720p. If we can get games that are consistently above 60fps and that load titles v.fast then I think that will be a bigger improvement than what RT can offer in current hardware form right now.

I’m looking forward to reading all the outrage when Nvidia releases something like the GTX 1660 Ti again when an RTX 2080 Ti is already available. It will totally ruin PC gaming, because game developers will only target the 1660 Ti and this will hold back next gen graphics!!! Oh, wait, that’s not reality.

This was really underwhelming :( Starting to think we'll never get a season like Forsaken again. I'm hoping we'll at least get some good PvP balance changes. It might be disappointing, but it's a season that will run over the festive period and during CES so I'm glad I won't have to play it as much :)

It's the same reason why Destiny 2 and similar games can't hit 60fps on the One X. They're CPU constrained. I feel like a robot keep saying this over and over, but CPU and SSD are the big leaps for the next-gen.

This too. I think we'll see different performance metrics this gen. We saw that with Nvidia measuring RTX-OPS for its RTX cards, and you gotta imagine Microsoft will be stretching the performance lines with something similar.

I think that was the thinking behind Lockhart. They have some interesting decisions to make that impact far more than just the consoles they sell. Microsoft also doesn’t care about console numbers now. They made a strategic decision to link their console work to their cloud work to target all devices, but how long do you keep Xbox One S parts powering your datacenters? Do you then upgrade all of these to Anaconda parts, or is there some middle ground (Lockhart) that’s based on the same CPU that provides different levels of xCloud access? Spencer has said XCloud will move to Scarlett, but we don’t know when. You could say move to Xbox One X parts, but that has CPU constraints that will limit next-gen games. There’s a lot to consider when your biggest competitors are starting from scratch (Google / Amazon).

SADE, All Access, XCloud, and Game Pass. They’ve all been experiments for future revenue streams for Xbox, and the hardware affects all of them from the datacenter to the home, to subscriptions to SKUs.

I don’t wanna get into the exact details of who or who doesn’t have dev kits as I don’t know exactly how many studios have signed yet. But it’s a small number, and only major studios will be involved right now. That will change early next year heading towards E3, but like Jason says of course regular devs are getting annoyed at the lack of info.

Indeed. You can surprise with software, APIs, and more. It’s also no secret that Microsoft has been working very closely with AMD on lots more than just Xbox. Look at Surface Laptop 3, and beyond.

Current gen games are held back by CPU, and the lack of SSD more than anything else. Devs can do a lot of tricks to upscale resolution and visual quality, but there’s no getting around CPU constraints. If Microsoft decide to release a cheaper console at some point after Scarlett then as long as it shares the same CPU I can’t imagine it would be a major headache for most devs.

I'd expect we'll see a lot of rumors about Scarlett dev kit specs in the next few weeks. They started going out to more external folks recently, but they're definitely not final kits. Microsoft is also being clever this time to stop leaks, but I'll jump in here if I see anything that lines up to what I've seen and heard.

Thread Next-gen PS5 and next Xbox speculation launch thread |OT5| - It's in RDNA
When Phil said that he was referring to the current xCloud offering in testing, which is based on Xbox One S hardware. So of course a game is going to play locally better on an Xbox One X. Phil also said, very clearly, that "Project Scarlett and all of its power and all of its performance is the foundation of our future in console and the formation of our future in cloud." So, aligning the hardware in both the datacenter and what's under your TV means xCloud is about to get far more powerful. It now depends how long it takes Microsoft to move from Xbox One S hardware to Scarlett hardware in its datacenters, and that will probably depend on how fast Google moves with Stadia etc.

No idea on price points, and those will fluctuate for months until parts are fully sourced and are being assembled at Pegatron. I believe the spec target is more to align xCloud and console as a unified offering where games will run the same on both.
