ThreadDangen Entertainment Allegedly Robbing Indie Devs? (Update: Medium article with more allegations, Dangen responds)
Hey guys,
Just to comment on the YT videos. Our team set the playlist to private, but in error didn't individually take down the songs. That is now done.
In the case of Qwesta, we've sent him a direct message to inform him that a sales report has been sent to the head of the Devil Engine team over a week ago, and we've been waiting for an invoice so we can pay them.
Just to clear things up.
ThreadDangen Entertainment Allegedly Robbing Indie Devs? (Update: Response From Dangen Entertainment)
Hey everyone.
I loathe writing messages like this, because it means that something is on fire. I really wish I was writing a post about how awesome I thought X-men #2 was, or how much I’m enjoying Jedi Fallen Order.
That said, I think it’s proper that I handle the issue at hand directly. Since even before its release, the developer of Devil Engine has been verbally abusive to us, and has been hugely toxic to our entire team. The toxicity got to a point that it started to affect my mental state, and we eventually mutually agreed to a commucation proxy to get work done. (I’m happy to offer up evidence if asked, but I’m not doing so right now to keep this post legible).
There is no question that we made mistakes while working with the developer. We’re not perfect. When mistakes were made, we did our best to rectify the situation.
Soon after the release of Devil Engine, the developer assigned a proxy to receive all revenue they had earned. This was to expedite payment and make sure that they DID NOT receive payment late. Withholding tax when transferring money out of the country is a giant headache, which is why a proxy based in Japan was chosen. We paid the developer’s proxy on July 23rd, well within the rules of the contract we signed. We also supplied evidence to the developer of the payment..
And now they’re attacking one of our other developers, encouraging people to pirate the game instead of buying it. Bug Fables is an incredible game that deserves better. Moonsprout Games has been working for a very long time on the game, and has created something that we’re insanely lucky and proud to be working with. They do not deserve this.
Anyway, if anyone has questions or would like evidence, I do need to ask our counsel what we’re able to make public, as we do have an NDA in place. I hope this clears things up.

ThreadDoes anyone know how to break the "tomorrow I'll start my perfect existence" cycle?
I just take it one day at a time, working on small achievable goals. Make small improvements over time that you know are sustainable. Don't make large sweeping goals that are outside what you're capable of keeping long term. We all have our natural limitations that we have to slowly push, rather than shatter one magical day.
Over time, the small goals will become habits, and you can take your eye off it and improve something else. Eventually, you'll build a bunch of habits that sustain you, and you'll wonder why it was so hard in the first place.Yep, this.

ThreadDon’t be afraid to call out shitty Americans abroad
After living in Japan for close to 10 years, I've run into my fair share of shitty American tourists. I've also run into really wonderful people who are happy to respect the country as a place people call home.
I call out shitty tourists who treat Japan like it's their personal playground. Why? Because Japanese people largely won't, and tourists take that as acceptance of their shitty behavior. This colors local opinion of foreigners in general, and it's a detriment to those of us that actually live here and call this place our home. Is it fair that we get painted with the same brush? Not at all, but that's the reality of the situation.Usually they don't tell you to go fuck yourself. They usually just begrudgingly stop. It helps if you live in the country, and are not a tourist yourself.

ThreadTyler Durden from FIGHT CLUB taught the wrong lesson, so what's the right lesson?
The biggest problem with disenfranchisement is that people rarely look within to effect change. Self improvement should always be the first thing we look at.

I was diagnosed when I was 15, and tried all kinds of medication.
Eventually I got off it because I didn't like the effects, and instead built systems in my life to account for it.
Today I'm a productive person, but I'm scatter brained and disorganized. I have plenty of systems in place to help me, like task management software like Asana.
For my personal life, my ADD lead to me constantly lose things, so I created "nesting areas" where items like my keys or my wallet always go when I get home.

As I've gotten older, I've become more and more empathetic, which I love, but it does complicate things sometimes. Especially when you want desperately to help someone, but you know you can't, and you just have to stand there and watch them crumble in front of you.
That is easily one of the most soul crushing feelings I've ever had.
If anything, the part I'm bad at is not feeling empathy, and having to take care of myself before others. That has hurt me a lot, especially recently.

Aside from what you WANT to do, being even a vegetarian in Japan isn't easy. Not a lot of restaurants offer veggie options. It's just a reality here. My friend is able to strong arm people into making veggie versions of what she wants, but she also eats very little, and sometimes just lives off some cabbage or some shit, so if you want to eat properly, not really the way to go.I dunno man. Here in Osaka, I constantly have to do research to find places that have veggie options when I take out friends that are vegetarian. And Japanese people generally consider fish vegetarian for some reason if you try to ask for veggie options.

ThreadRemnant From The Ashes |OT| A New Soul Rises From The Ashes
I beat the tree boss with a buddy last night.
here are my tips:
1) There is a max radius to his AOE stomp, so stay out of range of that if you can, but if you have a ring that increases evasion window, you can roll through it anyway.
2) We largely used repeaters to damage. Decent range, decent damage.
3) When he slams down on the ground, there is a weak point on the back of his neck. It does a lot of damage if you can snipe that.
4) when he starts launching the pods, look at him, and each time he launches one, dodge right or left a second later to miss the pod. If you have screamers coming after you during this phase, the pods will kill them when they explode, so don't worry about them too much while dodging. NOTE: Make sure your whole team is dodging in the same direction or are not close to each other. If you dodge into each other, it doesn't matter how good your dodging is, you'll dodge into a cloud meant for your teammate, and will get stunlocked by each subsequent pod until the phase ends.
5) Drink oilskin before walking into the encounter. This will give you a 30% increase resist to Rot, which will be essential to make sure you're not infected the whole time (we ended the fight infected and had to run for the checkpoint after beating it, but we definitely stayed alive because of the oilskin at the beginning).
6) Use bloodwort instead of dragon hearts if you can afford it. Whenever you're at half HP, just use a blood wort, and keep running and gunning. This will keep your dragon hearts free for emergency clutch heals and teammate revives.
Hopefully that all helps. The fight took us like, 4-5 tries last night with two people. It was pretty fantastic.that's by design. The team has said that each campaign is so different there are bosses you will never see in a single run.

ThreadSet Photos of Jupiter's Legacy (Netflix Superhero Show)(Daredevil Showrunner)
I usually hate Millar's shock schlock, but Jupiter's Legacy is surprisingly light on Millar's usual mean spirited crap, and actually does a good job shining a positive light on good old fashioned heroics. Also, the deconstruction of the genre is well done, and in the end, doesn't make you go "well shit, superheroes ARE stupid".
Looking forward to seeing how close this sticks to the core story.I think the original story functions fine as a 2 season affair. Have Part 1 take up a single season, and then have Part 2 take up a second season. That also means that Season 1 is all setup, but the pay off in season 2 will be great.
ThreadSet Photos of Jupiter's Legacy (Netflix Superhero Show)(Daredevil Showrunner)
The commonality amongst all those titles is that Mark Millar kept his mean streak at home when he wrote those (well, except for certain parts of Ultimates 2...and Logan).

ThreadJonathan Hickman's X-Men |OT| Adaptation or Dominance(Open Spoilers, Gambit is the Witness)
It would be in her best interest to lie to Moira. It forces Moira to make the most of every life, and really REALLY think about what is most important to her. In the timeline where Pyro killed her, she hadn't fully thought out creating the cure. If she had a limited number of tries, she'd be more likely to do more drastic things to survive.
ThreadJonathan Hickman's X-Men |OT| Adaptation or Dominance(Open Spoilers, Gambit is the Witness)
If you look at her various timelines, she actually dies fairly young in a lot of them. A lot of that stuff happens YEARS after she died. That's kinda what I mean. Maybe Moira always told Xavier these things, and he had to go through the steps, knowing fully well that he would always have to approach that point. it would mean that Xavier knew that a lot of what he did would fail, but had to do it anyway, to reach the dream.
Or maybe Maker Xavier is not who we think he is, and all is weird and bad. I guess we'll find out soon.
I think it's interesting that Xavier used telekinesis to take Mystique's flash drive. He doesn't have that power as far as we know...
Revealing that he's actually Maker would have me let out a real fucking huge chuckle.

Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre are REALLY different. Ogre battle is more like an RTS, while Tactics Ogre is a traditional SRPG. There are other games in the series, but Tactics Ogre, afaik, is the last one Matsuno directed himself.

These are definitely hints. Not entirely. We already know that

I'm a big fan of Fire Emblem and FF Tactics, but by far the best SRPG I've ever played is Tactics Ogre. From the story to the mechanics, it's everything I want out of an SRPG.

That said, I've found the best way to level is to just play through the game, starting at a level that matches the level of the hero. It's a lot more fun than doing infinity trials over and over again, imo, and it seems to go by fairly quickly.

Good for the Infinity Trials where you have to kill a lot of dudes. Fourth ability is his motorcycle, which is a good way to get out of corners, and get enemies in a line.

As a brown man, I don't have to deal with what black men do to a large extent, but I also do not understand what is in the hearts of white people who do this.
One thing that has made for an interesting social experiment has been living in Japan. When you're a foreigner, it doesn't matter what color your skin is. You are always an "other". It doesn't matter how much japanese you speak, or how long you've lived here.
All of a sudden, white people start to get what other minorities go through, but in a safe environment where the majority won't drag them into the streets and beat the shit out of them.
The foreigner community in Japan is really cool as a result. There's no racial hierarchy. It's just a bunch of people from different races and different countries, surviving together.
All the same, I do notice that because of my brown skin, black people in Japan reach out a little farther to make friends with me. I don't know why that is. Maybe because they know as a PoC, they don't have to overcome some indoctrination I grew up to make friends, or maybe because they see commonality in our struggles. I won't pretend I've struggled as much as any black person, but I've had my fair share of being treated like garbage, just for being a PoC.

ThreadWhat's the difference between an anime watcher/manga reader and a weeaboo?
I assume you're referring to people who do this OUTSIDE of Japan.
The inevitable reality of living in Japan for years is that some words you remember better in Japanese than in English, and they come out in normal conversation around others that speak both Japanese and English.
This is the same for bilingual people who speak both languages in their household.
The definition of a weeb for those of us who have lived in Japan for years varies, I think.
Usually it means 1) Someone who thinks Japan is flawless and it's the perfect country, and lecture others on it, despite only having lived in japan for a year, or 2) Someone that entrenches them in Japanese culture at a cursory level, but in no meaningful way (ie. has a kimono, and fetishizes Japanese imagery, but never learns Japanese or tries to fit in or converse with their locals).

ThreadGame devs of Resetera, how do leaks impact your work?
I don't think it helps much to announce a game well ahead of it being shown at all. Games look ugly and broken very early on in development, so if you just showed a logo 2 years ahead of time, and spent that marketing money, would it be worth it? I'm not sure. People may just forget about it, or post "what ever happened to ____?" threads. Not seeing a game for a long time after announcement might have people lose confidence in the title, because it's taking too long.
People generally don't know how games are made, so they don't realize that the game is going to take a really long time to get made, even in the case of small indie games. It makes more marketing sense to announce it closer to release, when the media they can release is indicative of the final product, and that excitement can directly lead to sales in the long term.
The Marvel example is flawed, because they're the biggest game in town for movies. Not all studios can do that. If we announced 5 game titles with no screenshots, and spent money on the announcement with nothing to show, people would ignore us, and we would've wasted a bunch of money on promotion.
ThreadGame devs of Resetera, how do leaks impact your work?
Considering the fact that people look at set photos from a movie and go "that costume looks like shit" a LOT, it would just be a 100x worse for games. Not to mention the number of times a game gets cancelled, or a team is moved to another project mid development.
ThreadGame devs of Resetera, how do leaks impact your work?
It hurts immensely. The whole point is to have a single point for maximum impact. This maximizes interest and excitement for the game. Leaks affect teams a lot, and there's a reason people get fired over leaking things.
I had a conversation with my coworker just today about how crappy it is to see so many things leak this close to the start of E3. It must be hugely demoralizing for the devs and the pubs.
I hear about all kinds of unannounced games by virtue of being in the industry, and I take my responsibility to stay quiet very seriously.

Huh, this is interesting. I have a LOT of friends, and within the Japanese game dev community, we hang out a lot with our friends, and have a pretty close knit group. We're all in our 30's.
That said, I do hear that for a lot of guys in the US, they don't have a lot of friends. I wonder why that is.
ThreadSo guys what's your secret to online dating?
Online dating here in Japan is a nightmare. Too many women use it as a way to make friends, and most people don't even post photos of themselves (Japanese people have a real issue with showing their faces in public photos and video).
I just gave up on it, and meet people in person at group events. Tends to work better for me, since my greater asset is my personality, not my looks.
ThreadPersona 5 Royal - New Famitsu Information and Developer Interview
I have very little interest in investing another 200 hours into this game. Shame they didnt do post game story DLC. Oh well, hopefully those excited for this get a cool experience.
Endgame brought the classic two page spread of heroes posing in wreckage before the final battle to the screen, and did it masterfully. And that was before the movie did a victory lap/highlight reel that was beautifully pulled off.
It's hard to beat that.
ThreadI love fighting games with all my heart and I've never been good. It's great. AMA.
I'm no button masher, and I've been playing fighting games for years, but I'm not pro level. I understand spacing, vaguely know what moves my character has that are unsafe, but I often get greedy, get stuck in loops when I'm trying to pull off the same attack over and over even though it's not working, and generally play too aggressively.
I'm good enough that I play like I know what I'm doing, even if I'm not always winning. That's good enough for me, but I'm always learning and like to improve.

This is disappointing. I don't know why they keep doing these damn rereleases. I don't want to play the game again for flashes of new stuff. Why is it such a crime to make Story DLC instead? I just don't get it.
They had it right with FES, yet they've never followed the formula again. It's annoying.
If it had been FES style Story DLC I'd be there day 1. I want new content for the game. I'm not going to play through the whole game again, though.
ThreadWhy You Shouldn't Overlook Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age - Gameinformer
I fully admit that despite being a huge FF fan since I was a kid, I didn't like FFXII the first time I played it. Playing it again in 2018, I realized that I was a moron, and the game was ahead of its time. The ending is still garbage, but up until that point, it's a masterstroke in combat design and art direction.
It's become my favorite modern FF. Pure genius.I do not agree. The latter half of FFXII original is a cakewalk. Zodiac moves some of the most powerful spells to hard sections of optional dungeons that force you to actually earn them, instead of just buying or happening upon them.
Holy is a simple example, but in FFXII, Holy was purchasable from Balfonheim after a certain part of the story. In Zodiac Age, it's only found in an optional side part of one of the late game dungeons, and cannot be purchased.
Just preordered my PS4 copy on Amazon. It'll take a little bit to get here in Japan, but I'm hyped.
I loved MK9, and played quite a bit of MKX, so 11 is a no-brainer for me.

Thread[Reddit] Removing your support items in Anthem massively increases melee/combo/proc/ult damage
Jesus Christ. Empty slots don't count as 0 power? How do you let this happen?!
I've enjoyed Anthem, but the constant mistakes and missteps are crazy.I'm sure it's obvious, but basically, power is calculated as a mean of equipped gear power. What SHOULD happen is that empty slots are calculated as zero power, to bring down the average. What's clearly happening here is that empty slots are just ignored, which has this effect.
Since there are support items above epic, it's currently better to unequip them than to have them at all.
I can't imagine how hard it must be to come up with new Pokemon, especially. The sheer number of ideas that have already been expended. It must be crazy difficult.

ThreadZanki Zero (Dangan Ronpa devs) removing awful pedo content, that shouldn't have been added in the first place, from the western localization.
Living in Japan, I am constantly annoyed with the rampant reference to loli content. It is an issue larger than a single game. it is a cultural problem.
Two best combos in endgame imo are Venomous Blaze/Black Ice and Venomous Blaze/Stasis Chain. Stasis Chain rips off shields, and Venomous Blaze turns Flame Burst into the only acid primer Storms have access to. Black Ice also freezes enemies around the target when killing, so you not only spread the primer on combos, but they get frozen too. It's a killer combo for groups.
I still only have amulet of winter, and no MW fire component, so I haven't tried Venomous Blaze/Ten Thousand Suns, but I can see that being a lot of fun.My buddy had the exact same issue last night. Repair and maybe a reboot will fix it.

ThreadWill Atlus cancel 13 Sentinels if no one buys the paid demo?
Putting out a set that is a 36 page artbook, a physical mini soundtrack and a demo packaged together for 2900 yen is scummy????
They specifically included physical goods to justify the price. Artbooks here in Japan are usually 3000 yen on their own.
ThreadWill Atlus cancel 13 Sentinels if no one buys the paid demo?
Vanillaware notoriously takes a long time with their titles, and has no problem shipping at a loss for the sake of quality, so they'll find a way. It's called the "prologue", so it pretty much is a demo of sorts. To justify the $30 cover price, they included a bunch of extras. That is customarily what companies will do to get to that price point, since you generally cannot get something out in a retail box for less than 3000 yen.

Ugh, I know right? Mexican food here in Japan is pretty awful, for the most part.
Not surprised that a lot of this is going on in Osaka. Osaka is such an awesomely laid back city.
Hell yeah it's important. I've told this story a whole lot, but when I was a kid growing up, I used to love MASK. MASK only had one Indian character, and he was a sidekick character named Ali Bombay, but I thought he was the coolest shit in the world, because I'd never seen another Indian dude on TV kicking ass.
It always made me sad that he wasn't the protagonist though. It made me feel like I could never be the leader, or the hero. I'd always be a sidekick.
I grew out of it, and gained a lot of confidence in the process, but I don't want any other Indian kid to go through what I did. I want Indian kids growing up with an awesome Indian hero that represents all the positive qualities that heroes like Superman and Spider-man represent.Yep, agree 100%. 8) Iron Fist
9) Luke Cage
10) Hulkling

ThreadMarvel Ultimate Alliance 3 Launch Roster Character Speculation |DT| Will Galactus Ever Arrive?
I was going to say Noh-varr but I'll take either or both.
Also, pie in the sky, I would love Mar-vell, especially in the Ultimate green and galaxy getup.
There actually is with masterworks. The Masterworks inscriptions can have modifiers that are actually kind of what you were talking about yesterday (for instance there's a masterwork Burning Orb that has venom effect added on).
I didn't have issues on hard. I would just dart in, use my abilities, and dart out to regain shields. Interceptor shields regain faster the more you run, afaik. it's like playing the Flash but he has two knives.I've been using Ice storm as a primer, and Burning Orb to detonate, and it's been pretty goddamn satisfying.
If you and your friends enjoy killing stuff and working together, the core gameplay loop will satisfy. I do recommend playing on Hard starting out. I think Normal is tuned a little too easy.
I railed into him after "that" mission, but still felt bad. I felt like a friend that was angry that he put himself in that kind of danger. I like that it actually gave me the option to cool off and stop shouting at one point. Came at the perfect moment.
I'm playing with my friends right now, and I find it a lot of fun. The masterwork loot I've gotten has been really cool. I got a gun that calls down lightning every 3-4 shots. Past that, I've been enjoying trying different ability combos on my Storm, which I enjoy thoroughly. I think the uncommon-epic inscriptions are more about synergy and are kind of boring, but after getting that masterwork rifle, I'm really interested to see what kind of loot shows up later on.You get plenty of coin from Alliances too.
I actually find the characters rather interesting. I find it rather funny that there are so many weird people in Tarsis. Divisive characterization I suppose.
ThreadUhhh... what the hell is that rape "dynamic NPC event" in RDR2?
For years, games like Resident Evil have had a blood and gore warning at the beginning of the game. There's no reason not to have a similar warning at the beginning of RDR2 for this kind of content. Developers should be free to put this type of content in the game, but they should also include warnings for those that suffer from trauma and PTSD related to rape.
The only thing I can say is if you're playing on PC, install the game on an SSD. It brings the loading times from 2 minutes down to 30 seconds (timed it last night).
This is really sad news for consoles, though. Really hope it's improved.I keep hearing this. There's only one loading screen between Fort Tarsis and the start of the mission. Where are the other several loading screens? Are you talking about the ones at the end of a mission?
Honestly, my friends and I are absolutely loving it, but it does seem that mileage varies.
Across the board I think we're around lvl 23, so we've been playing a lot so far hah.
I mean, it's basically following Diablo's model. Kill stuff, find the door, get loot, kill stuff, find the door, get the loot.
I'm certainly fine with that gameplay loop at endgame. I guess I wasn't expecting anything more complicated than that, tbh.
I haven't posted at all in this thread, because I've been busy playing the game, but me and my friends are having a great time with it. I don't know what to say. The game is great. Having a blast with it. For the record, I just hit the tombs section.
I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but have you tried moving the game to an SSD? It makes a huge difference.
I can clock my load times, but they're not bad on an SSD.
Huh, that's super weird. My load time is like, 20-30 seconds tops. Same with my friends. I noticed it was considerably better than it was in the demo.
A buddy of mine was having horrific load times on HDD, and he switched it to SSD and the difference was night and day.
Like, one of the trials asks you to complete 5 world events. Let's say I did 5 world events before getting to the tomb section, that trial should already be complete when I find the tomb. It sounds like for some reason, they weren't counting, and people are having to satisfy those conditions from scratch, which is very time consuming.

Having worked in localization myself, I think keeping honorifics in is terrible. That's not localization. Localization should make the player feel that their target language was the source material for the title. It should feel natural, as if they're getting everything using their own cultural context.
From what I can remember, all the translation professionals I know feel the same way. That's definitely how we handle localizations at DANGEN.

ThreadThis was the first time I lost my memory from drinking too much
Yup, don't force yourself to like drinking. I love drinking, and when out with friends, we drink quite a bit, but I never shame friends who don't want to drink while out.
That said, if you want to continue drinking, moderate yourself. Some people can drink a lot, but that doesn't mean you have to. You might never have a high tolerance. That's okay. No one is going to think less of you as a result. People will, however, think differently of you, if you're that guy always puking and blacking out.
So, drink slowly, eat plenty, and when you think "eh, I'm not THAT drunk, let's have another drink", take a break.Yeah, this is a great way to avoid a hangover. Drink tons of water before going to bed. You'll still feel groggy in the morning, but your headache won't be so bad.
ThreadI don't understand anyone that loves rural living.
Yeah, I'm definitely not a rural type person. I'm not really a nature person, and value convenience over scenery. My best friend lives in the countryside, and I just don't get it.
PvP ruined Destiny, because they had to balance for both it and PvE, which made PvE boring.
Anthem can go nuts on overpowered crazy weapons and never worry about PvP balance. Best decision.

ThreadAnthem Demo Thread (VIP: Jan 25th-27th, Open: Feb 1st-3rd) - Time To Fly FreelancEra
Yeah, that's totally understandable. To me, I found the Ranger to be a rather boring class, but I generally don't like Bioware's "soldier" class. The storm felt great, and I found myself floating above the battlefield raining death down, and sniping here and there.
My friend played the colossus, and seemed to really like that. It's just a shame you can't trade loot.Yeah, I played with a group of friends that each chose different classes, and it was really cool to see how they all worked together. It was very impressive. All rangers feels like a weaker Destiny, but when you have a Storm, an Interceptor, and a Colossus in the mix, the "real" design philosophy behind the game started to show its hand more.
That said, I think starting everyone with a Ranger is a design mistake. If you got to choose your first javelin, you'd be able to show off the gameplay diversity far earlier. I suspect some people will play the Ranger, feel that's the way all the classes play, find it boring, and move on to something else.
ThreadAnthem Demo Thread (VIP: Jan 25th-27th, Open: Feb 1st-3rd) - Time To Fly FreelancEra
I actually disagree on the loot, but just for one reason: abilities. Playing with a Storm, my ability drops completely changed how I played the class in moment to moment encounters, and that to me was amazing. Additionally, I was playing with a buddy who was also a Storm, and our abilities were totally different because of the drops we got. That, to me, is fucking rad.For this reason, I think the Interceptor and Storm are the strongest classes right now. They're fantastic fun, and don't necessarily rely on the gunplay. I was just using fire blasts and glacial spears my whole time as a Storm. They were really open about the fact that the demo is specifically 6 weeks of bug fixes behind the release build.
I'm playing the game right now and I'm quite enjoying it. Ask me anything you'd like and I can hopefully answer. It's a single QTE sequence in the game. It's not something you can do multiple times in the game. The sequence is awesome, though.
