Thread Shadow of the Colossus |OT| On the Shoulders of Giants
On the 7th Colossus, put in several hours. It’s my very first time with it. So far I love the world. It feels very Lord of the Ringsy, like Middle Earth in atmosphere and visual design. It feels serene and peaceful, but mysterious and I like that. Some gripes are the camera getting wonky when on the colossi and controlling Agro. I’m not a fan of that. My initial reaction on mounting Agro the very first time was “Who the hell designed these controls!?”. Feels unintuitive but I’ve since gotten used to them and I tolerate it now. Eager to continue later tonight though.

Neither really. I enjoyed Halo 4 and 5 so I'm excited to see where they go with Infinite. Keeping quiet until now isn't really a sign of anything at this point. It's Halo. They can even wait a few months before launch before turning the marketing machine on. It'll be everywhere within seconds lol.

Just to clarify, I didn't say the price is going to thrill people. I guarantee you price is still being looked at at this point in time. I just meant once hard, concrete details (like price, launch date, launch games, first party games, etc) are in front of people, the conversation will change.

I get there's disappointment in some of the details today (backwards compatibility) and some weaker aspects compared to Series X, but I'm positive once the public starts seeing things like price, the physical system itself, launch titles and other games coming to the platform and how great they look, this will all be a fleeting memory. There's more to it than just showing games. Starfield. Even though we barely know anything about it, the thought of a huge single player sci-fi Bethesda RPG finally getting made is super tantalizing to me. Thread Let's settle this once and for all: Which one is the best Mass Effect game?
They're all excellent. But if I was forced to pick... Mass Effect is my personal of the trilogy in that it introduced me to the universe for the first time. The various aliens, cultures, tech, world building and memorable characters... Mass Effect 2 is the "best" game of the series in terms of character moments, narrative, subplots, locations, etc. Mass Effect 3 is the top in terms of mechanics but also had a lot of great moments. I wasn't a fan of the ending, but it didn't ruin the trilogy or even the game for me. 95% of ME3 was fantastic. So overall ME1>2>3.

Every time I see someone refer to cameos of previous characters as 'forced', it makes me think they feel that way because they simply just already know who said character is from previous games or media. It didn't feel contrived to me at all. Actually thought it was a really neat cameo, and kind of fitting depending on what you chose for Arcadia Bay in the first game. The game definitely didn't live up to the first one though that's for sure. The roadtrip format meant Sean and Daniel were alone much of the time, which could get a little boring.

Edited the title to reflect the nature of this story. It's a rumor and should be treated as such before jumping to conclusions. And half of these points aren't even 'bad'...Sure, that's the case with practically every gameplay demo. Not necessarily a bad thing? Could be an interesting approach. Is this implying the CEO doesn't know the game's in development? (which would be hard to believe) or doesn't know about game development in general? (which wouldn't really be all that bad, as long as leads below him/her are knowledgeable). What's wrong with that?I mean, yes, the game's in development. Part of the development process is figuring out what game you want to make lol.Rebooting isn't a bad thing in itself. Could be best for the project. And does this mean the recent gameplay was fake too? Because that looked pretty good. What's 'gameplay downgrade' mean exactly when just above they're saying there's no actual game design? I'm confused.

Most games and genres I'm into are typically narrative driven anyway, so I very much put heavy emphasis on story. I'd say it's equally as important as gameplay for me, maybe even more so. It won't be any different in terms of price drops for Sony, MS or any other third party publisher. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. I have a pretty good PC with an RTX 2070, but even I can see that that's just not the case. The Xbox One X can be had for $350 or less nowadays. Hell I saw a deal going for $279.99 just recently. I'm sorry but it's just not possible to build a PC from scratch with comparable specs for that money.

Thread Can't we all finally agree that the PC Gaming Market doesn't threaten the Console market?
Fair enough! I think our wires got crossed a bit. You'd mentioned building a PC under a grand which outperforms the X, which, sure that's definitely possible. But I think my main point was even if you got a PC built from scratch with specs comparable to the X, it still wouldn't come close to $350 or less. And the price:performance ratio is why many players gravitate towards consoles. There's a lot of bang for your buck there. I think we're on the same page anyway.

Thread OnlySP: Why Life is Strange 2 Has the Most Powerful Video Game Storytelling of 2019
The first Life is Strange is one of my favorite games this entire decade. It took a lot for this one to finally get going though. I felt like the first two episodes dragged a bit, and I think I chalk that up to the simple fact there weren't a lot of NPCs to talk to. In the first one, talking to the denizens of Arcadia Bay, chatting up folks at Blackwell, and the dynamic between Chloe and Max was a huge part of what made it so great. The way different plot threads interwove together was incredibly engaging. I didn't feel that this time around, at least initially. Since the brothers are on the run all by their lonesome the first couple of episodes, there weren't many opportunities for great storytelling. It was a little boring. But it picked up in Ep. 3 and 4 and I'm more attached to the characters. Haven't played Ep.5 yet so I'm looking forward to its conclusion.

It doesn’t take an ass load of time but it’s still annoying to have to go back through the same areas for a few minutes again. Isn’t backtracking one of the things people complain about all the time in games lol? My biggest issue is not being able to start at different points of each map when I land. Even Souls games let you pick different locations you can fast travel to.

Really enjoying my time with the game, my biggest gripe I'd say is the lack of fast travel. I love exploring and unlocking new routes in the worlds, but going back to a planet and having to retrace all my steps to get to a section I couldn't before is . Some planets like Zeffo are massive, I'm kind of dreading heading back there to unlock those paths all the way in the back of the map. And why in the world isn't there a "teleport back to Mantis" option? That'd save me a huge headache.

Unless it means you can’t die with it active?Heh, no wrong way to play a game in my opinion but honestly this feels like it’d mess with the flow of everything to me. Are world events not working at the moment? Just have to complete a few more in freeplay to open up the last tomb (Yvenia) and I’ve been flying around and killing things for about about 30 minutes and haven’t seen any events pop up.

It's still technically solo I guess? Sure, there are a few others in the open world during the tomb mission but you can complete it all on your own, you're not forced to play with anyone else.

Difficulty is just set to normal. I find the missions so far to be an okay challenge. Some have been harder than others, but nothing that's felt unsuitable for solo play. I'm like you about the first person view. I think I still would have preferred if we saw our pilot in third person but it's growing on me. There's definitely chatter in the background but I don't know, it's barely noticeable to me. I wish it had that LOUD bazaar feel to it, all sorts of sounds everywhere. And add some great music too! One of my favorite things about the original Mass Effect trilogy was the ambient music in hubs. Oh wow, I'm really enjoying talking to everyone naturally, so that's that's great to hear!

Finally started playing yesterday and today on my X, only a few hours in (level 6) and... I’m having a good time? Lol. Just soloing the campaign first before anything else. The combat is really damn fun. I went for the Colossus first and I’m just loving blowing fools up and flying never gets old. Guns feel punchy and that nuke...wew. Going for the Storm second. Story is fine so far, it’s pushing me along and I’m generally interested to see it through and where it goes. I’ve been taking my sweet time and reading up every single Cortex entry and some of them are pretty funny lol. And I guess it just depends on your tastes but Fort Tarsis feels like a cozy home to me. I’m really liking coming back after expeditions and seeing what’s new, chatting up all the characters. I’m genuinely connecting with most of them. Yarrow, Owen, Zoe, Prospero, Max the bartender, even that creeper Neeson Giles lol. Each with their own little stories. This part feels like BioWare to me. My only complaint about it would be that it *sounds* empty. It feels like a bazaar so I wish it’d be bustling with noise and convos going on, and throw in some nice background music while exploring... Loading times haven’t been too bad really, except for maybe launching a new mission, sometimes taking 20-30 seconds. But it generally doesn’t bother me, I’m fine just sitting and waiting lol. And I do wish we could set waypoint markers on the map. It’d help navigation so much. Had a few error disconnects here and there but nothing that’s got on my nerves yet. Other than those things...game’s great so far.

Ahh, but "bad" man wants to use ancient macguffin for good though (in his eyes): For real though, I do like this approach, at least from what we know so far (which isn't much). Made Saren much more compelling at least.

Official accounts on Twitter said more than once it takes place decades before the game. There’s nothing confusing about the flight. The developers have been extremely transparent and answering people’s questions over the years. No one should have expected a “fly absolutely anywhere” scenario, that’s not realistic for this type of game. You also upgrade flight time over the course of the game, so it’s difficult to judge that aspect at this point in full. I prefer to be reasonable and see how that is after the fact. But yes, my assumption was fairly high ceilings given the environments, but that was later clarified through more information being given. It wasn’t confusing, just something you learn along the way. Same with jets not being indefinite (also unrealistic expectation). It IS open world in freeplay, even if you go through cave systems, tunnels etc.Phew, a maniacally cynical way to approach it, and. No, I don’t feel “fooled” or misled at all. There’s always things in game’s marketing that end up becoming clearer the more it’s shown. Clearer, not intentionally misled.

From my understanding, Frostbite has a lot to do with it, yeah. Streaming is a very difficult issue with it. The engine literally wasn’t designed from the outset to accommodate huge open worlds. BioWare built that into the engine along the way. As for flight duration, they actually did say they played around with having indefinite flight, but it made combat too easy and was difficult to nail down a satisfying combat loop. Understandable.

I’m genuinely surprised at how it’s not understandable to so many so far but no, it’s just a prequel nugget, a short little tease as a lead up to the events of the game as they’ve been saying.

What's Niao Sun's role again? I don't recall her from the first two games.

So PC era, I have the chance to get a used rig (2-3 years old) in good condition (i7-7700K, 1070 GTX, 16GB ram, 500GB SSD) for about $450-500. The only real gaming I'd be looking to do on it are RTS games (old and new). As someone who's not too savvy with PC parts, should I take it?

Yeah everything included. It's a prebuilt from ibuypower from a friend of mine. He said he's never had any issues and only used it for light gaming, mostly video editing the last couple years.
