My wife and I, after having put 80 hours into classic and not finishing, recently restarted the game with the Definitive Edition, and I had a couple of questions. 1) Is there any reason to keep unique items? Like, are we going to fuck up something later or not have something we could use for a quest at some point if we sell them? 2) Is there any reliable way to make money? We're constantly low on funds.

That when this girl sitting next me on the way back from a field trip in high school commented that I had big feet, then showed me her belly button and asked if I knew what they said about girls with deep belly buttons, my response shouldn't have been to explain the differences between innie and outie belly buttons and why they exist and reasons as to why it may be deep but instead realize she was interested in sex. For the record that was the only time I've ever heard that question or phrase.

But the narrative was entirely focused on the singularity of the task that kicks the whole thing off, which is delivering the ashes to their final resting place. This isn't a story about rage-Kratos and a drive to take down a pantheon. I can get being disappointed if that wasn't what you wanted or expected from a GoW game, but narratively the game as a singular entry is stellar in keeping its focus and making sure all beats are in service of that focus.

Thread Epic Games Debuts Metahuman Creator: Photorealistic Human Character Creator
Yeah. Talking about it other devs today, and we're all pretty astonished. For a project focusing on photo-realism, even something that gets you 60% of the way there with a model in a quarter of the time is a HUGE benefit. Hell, even for projects that aren't aiming for photo-realism it's a boon for bi-pedal humanoids.Considering that you get a full export, you should have the ability to change whatever. "When you're happy with your human, you can download the asset via Quixel Bridge, fully rigged and ready for animation and motion capture in Unreal Engine, and complete with LODs. You'll also get the source data in the form of a Maya file, including meshes, skeleton, facial rig, animation controls, and materials."This is less about character customization, and more about drastically cutting down the time spent in the character modeling pipeline.

I have a friend that suffers from this, so while I can't speak to the experience of having it, I can understand it. I agree that it's a very difficult thing to understand for people who don't have our haven't encountered it. I like him. I thought his introduction was great, where you're trying to fight this dude who just casually walks towards you and is like, "Oh, you thought you could hit this?" While I think the Ascians have been better villains overall, Zenos being fairly straightforward contrasted well against their world-ending machinations. I also think he's far from done growing as a character, and we'll see that in 6.0.

Thread Taco Bell employee loses job after customer complains about her PornHub videos
This certainly screams retaliatory. Not necessarily from someone who works with her, either. It could be anyone in town that she's turned down calling into corporate and pretending to be someone they are not. Fast food corporations don't really care about their hourly workers or even managers. My son got fired from Jack in the Box because a customer called corporate to complain because my boy pointed out their safety rules due to COVID. No, I'm not kidding. It's as dumb as it sounds. And if corporate calls and tells a manager to get rid of someone because of a complaint, the manager doesn't have much recourse. In fact, it has to be someone who knew beforehand, because afaik Taco Bell has a nation-wide mask policy with COVID for their workers, so she was very likely wearing a mask during shifts, especially in the drive thru. So I'd question how someone "recognized" her.

Thread Biden will release all available vaccine doses in break from Trump administration policy of holding back stock for second dose
I have a Type-1 Diabetic friend, whose wife is also a medical care professional. His wife doesn't fall into 1A, but both of them fall into 1B. What I've learned from them having called around to various facilities the past two weeks is that each vial contains a certain number of doses, but, the doses also have limited shelf life (maybe once opened? it wasn't totally clear). Most places instructed them to call back at the end of the day to see if they had any doses that they needed to use, and they both got their vaccine on Tuesday. I guess the theory employed by Biden's team here is that having even half-efficacy is better than nothing, and with them coordinating better distribution and potentially enabling faster production, the rolling availability will still roughly match up with guidelines for secondary doses, due to how they need to be used.

Thread Deadline: AMC CEO Slams Warner Bros HBO Max 2021 Theatrical Window Concept: Studio Sacrificing “Considerable” Profit
AMC needs WB content far more than WB needs AMC showing their content. I love the theater experience. My wife and I both have the AMC Movie Pass thing and used it extensively prior to COVID. That said, theater pricing models are obscene. We have three kids. To take my entire family to see a movie is dumb expensive. I have no benefit for family members with the AMC Stubbs Premiere. Give me a family tier for $35 a month or something. Or give me some free tickets to use for friends/family every month. Give other options to families apart from subscribing to a service as well. Switch your prices to always being matinee prices so its affordable or if a family is coming in with four or more people, let them get tickets at a bundle price. Theaters have options, and had time before COVID to try stuff like this. We're a society, for good and ill, that has always sought out convenience, and that has been a driving factor for well, everything. I don't want theaters to go the way of the dodo, and I don't want people to lose their jobs (which will unfortunately happen anyway), but these theater company execs need to get used to the idea that their profits aren't going to be the same anymore and adjust and accept a new norm.

Thread The Third Cir. has rejected Trump's appeal decisively in PA
Well, SCOTUS hasn't decided to take the case or not, and the Trump campaign will have to file with them. The reality of Trump is, and always has been these past four years, is that he is a loud, largely unintelligent person that connects with his base because they for whatever reason see part of themselves in him. The majority of the GOP have, and would continue, to maneuver him as a useful idiot. The talk of "Trump judges" has been overplayed in terms of them being loyal to Trump. In reality, these are McConnell judges, which are just ultimately ultra-conservative/right-wing judges and while that is easily arguably worse, they don't and never have answered to Trump. He was used as a stepstool for these people, and he either never had the wherewithal to realize this, or his narcissism didn't allow him to. They will throw Trump under the bus 10 out of 10 times if it allows them to stay in power, and they understand that the "machine" has to at least pretend to function for that to be the case. They don't look at things in terms of right/wrong side of history, but instead "what benefits me most right now?"

Thread The Third Cir. has rejected Trump's appeal decisively in PA
I legitimately wonder how much they actually care. Would they like to keep a majority in the senate? Yes. In the long-run, with them having an overwhelming majority in the SCOTUS and court packing being something that probably won't happen, they see their worst-case scenario as four years of not having the trifecta after which they can once again begin to dismantle any progress made, and best-case as being able to pin the COVID recession that Biden is going to inherit on Biden in the mid-term elections and get at least the house or senate back (I know that technically the odds are in the dems favor, but I think the way this election went calls some of that thinking into question). I don't see why they wouldn't think otherwise. With down ballot elections having favored the GOP, especially in places where redistricting is due to take place, at a state level they are going to be able to create further strangleholds against voting rights.

- This was in reference to the Secretary of State having sent out an email providing guidance for counties entering ballots onto a website that needed to be cured so that those people could come in and vote using a provisional ballot. They argued that she effectively changed state election law by doing this (question mark?)- The crux of their argument is that, based on the said guidance, some counties did it while others did not, and thus they have two people whose votes did not count and they were in counties that did not, so it was 'unfair' to these two people.- Not that there weren't observers, but that their observers couldn't get close enough. I think that's accurate, based on listening to it. Gulliani threw out a bunch of other random claims, too, that weren't in the complaint.

This is accurate. By the time anything happened in court in regards to this specific instance, every state will have likely certified their vote counts. Always keep the crowd meter maxed. Like, I only grove and reset in campaign when I have infinite time. During the times sections, get the timed requirements out of the way early if you can, and if it is asking things like, "Include two country discs" don't just plop them and wait, switch the country parts around, and don't ignore the other parts, either. ABS - Always Be Swapping. I also find myself waiting for pickups a lot when I shouldn't in regards to campaign. While I understand how it can be frustrating to have to swap a lot in campaign to do well, I can also see the design psychology being employed. We tend to only want to interact with things we know we like, and that especially goes for music. By both forcing specific tracks on you in campaign and making you switch things up, there is no way to get around having to use tracks you normally wouldn't and hearing how something you may not even like in the general sense can fit into a mix.

Ahh, ok. In that case I just watched some gameplay for Switch and the colors are completely different for Switch. Here is what they are mapped to, roughly, in terms of how the tracks break down, using the Switch colors: Blue = Drumline Purple = Bassline Red = Guitar/Lead Instrumentation Yellow = Vocals The reason you see the same instrument on Blue and Purple (or Purple and Red) sometimes is because the track doesn't have an explicit drumline or bassline, but still has something that is "equivalent" to those in terms of their function in the song.

It can be, but they also mention they've only received a handful of DMCA requests based on actual game scores for the lifetime of Twitch. What they are pointing to is being extra careful. The way I see it is that if you're playing a game with licensed music in it, and the rules aren't explicit (see Fuser), then you probably should turn off the music. Like, when I stream Watch Dogs Legion, I just disable the radio. My VODs are still there, and I haven't gotten any emails.

It just takes some time to get used to. You don't really have to be too rigid. Requests can be based on tracks you add yourself. When you get long blocks of time to complete the objectives, finish them early, then use the rest of the time to jam and swap. Once the objective is "checked" you don't have to keep anything relevant to it active anymore.

Something I will mention, as an avid Dropmix collector and player, do not discount the value of having any song available. Even if you don't "like" the song, variety is an incredible boon and you may find that the drums or keys from a song you'd normally never listen to slide into a mix with songs you do. This isn't a game about playing the songs you "like" and some of my favorite Dropmix mixes have parts from tracks I'd never have on a Spotify playlist. It saves you $10 in the long run, IF you want all the songs. If not, you can buy them individually.

I've heard that if you are all in the same general area IRL and all connect simultaneously on separate boats, it will generally put most of you in the same server. I've not tried it, but this also sounds like the weird magic that me and a friend had to do way back when to even get Two Worlds co-op to work. Technically, though, I could try it with four boats in my house, since I have it on Xbox and PC, and my two teenagers have it, too. Hmmmm.....

They trend to either doing Tall Tales or solo Reaper'ing. The stakes with either are pretty low, especially since the Tall Tales have checkpoints and I use solo Reaper'ing mostly as an opportunity to improve my PvP skills. Some of my wildest experiences in the game have been when I'm soloing and doing either of these two things.

That's fair in terms of events. I'll definitely fight skele sloops or megs if they appear, but to be honest, the only event I'll solo is Flameheart, and that's mostly because it's good solo sloop practice in terms of cannons, piloting, and having to repair all yourself. It's made me a considerably better player overall. I did solo an Ashen event once, and it technically wasn't too bad, but It was definitely a whole lot to keep track of simultaneously, so I probably won't do that again. I've not tried a vault solo, but I can see why that wouldn't be a great solo experience...especially the higher level keys. Sinking ships, though, I'd say that trying solo has made me a better player overall, too. For me, I've learned some nifty maneuvers and parts of the map that are beneficial for a sloop. I've learned positioning and when it is best to strike a target. I apply all of this to when I'm playing with my friends, who don't put as much time into the game as I do. Don't get me wrong, I've sunk a whole lot. But I sink less now than when I started.

Without the timer there wouldn't be any challenge. Plus, the more of them you do, the more you develop a rhythm and the less stringent the timer feels. Solo, yes, you have to prioritize, but with two or more people, you just assign people to individual tasks. One getting medallions, one/two getting chests. Never bother with the gold piles until the end. It gets easier. The better the key, the more loot in the vault. I also feel like the treasure spawns that happen on islands where you are collecting map pieces need to be included in people's calculations. My guess is that some people ignore/don't even know that extra loot spawns at each of these aa part of the voyage.

Thread Sea of Thieves |OT2| The Golden Era of Piracy
Last night was a crazy night, which I'll post about later, but tonight ended in a very funny way, too. Had a brig going with two friends to try out the vaults. We hit L5 gold hoarders pretty fast, well before the vault itself. After doing the vault, there was a sunken ship right next to the island, so we got that. Then a skeleton sloop pulled up right next to us. As we're grabbing the loot from the sloop, server merge. We merge into a server with a L5 reaper galleon, that's now coming right at us. We get to Golden Sands, get everything sold, and lower right as they get there. They're kind of mad, but peel off because there are two other GH emissaries on the map, and an empty ship is a good waste of resources. We go sell some fish we had for Sea Dogs rep, sink a skeleton galleon, and the golden reaper bounty spawns almost right next to us. We say fuck it and grab it. We only have a few thousand worth of loot and have made a shit ton already, so if we can't get it back to turn in, oh well. The reapers have obviously been successful in their dunks of other ships, and even though they are on the east of the map, they start racing towards reapers outpost. We get there and sell the reapers chest and the captains skull from the skeleton ship, while our third sails our ship away. The reaper ship is pretty pissed, as this is the second time we've sold before they can get to us. So they start chasing us. Since we're done playing and really don't care, we just start throwing the stuff we do have overboard, then vote to scuttle right as they get to up on us. They were very upset. I laughed. I got blunderbussed in the face. I laugh again. I take a small amount of pleasure in knowing they either got nothing, or spent a stupid amount of time trying to pick stuff up that wasn't worth much.

The game invites you to set your own boundaries. If something doesn't seem like a threat, and doesn't seem like a target for loot, then its your choice to engage. I know a number of streamers that back off when they find a crew doing tall tales, because that is a limitation they place on themselves. My inclination when when approaching players is to first figure out their intentions in regards to me. Generally you can tell if someone is "worth it" in terms of loot. You can generally get a pretty good idea of if someone is a threat. If you're in a galleon and there is a solo sloop player, the chances of them being able to take you out are low. Threat assessment is absolutely a key part of the loop and part of what makes the game interesting. Like, I generally leave people along. If I'm trying to get into shit with players, then I'll fly Reapers emissary so that people at least know I'm coming. Even then, I'll only take out people with guaranteed loot or level 4-5 emissaries. Other times, I'm actively on comms with other crews, generally being funny (or attempting to be) as part of an assessment if they are a threat to me. I find that approach actually works, and I've made some friends doing that. I'm not trying to say change the way you think, but there are many ways to play in the sandbox that is provided, and while some take more work than simply just blowing everything away, they can be far more rewarding.

This is just speculation, but generally something this late isn't just "Oh, we need to fix more bugs" If I had to venture to guess, there is some underlying issue that was discovered in the engine that requires a major change in the way something functions that isn't a simple fix and will require both complete retesting of everything once it is fixed and possibly another certification pass. The only other thing I could think of is that they may have failed certification on the OG Xbox One and/or PS4. Again, all speculation based on my experience, but this isn't a ripcord you pull for bugs that could be triaged and fixed in patches.

Thread CDPR Bosses in 2019: "No mandatory crunch." 2020: "Never mind, mandatory crunch."
I am going to preface this by saying, yes, I want better work environments. I want them for myself. I want them for my teammates. I won't disagree with anyone here about compensating teams for the extra work they put in in real, tangible ways. I've been in the game industry 15 years, and I've inevitably crunched on every project I've been on. Some were forced. Some were suggested. Some were me just being naïve and working more than I needed to. I've run the gamut of working weekends to sustained periods of 12-hour days to even some full days. I've worked on projects both small and large-scale. And as I mentioned, crunch was an inevitability on each of them. I missed my youngest taking his first steps. I missed my middle child's first words. I've been there for numerous life events for all three of my children and my wife, but I've also missed some. To lay it at the feet of management is short-sighted. A fantasy land where there is buffer built into schedules to account for issues that arise can't exist, because, and this may be shocking, that buffer is already built in. At least, it has been on the projects I've been on. To quote someone I loathe, with what some took as a gaffe from him, Donald Rumsfeld once said, "There are known knowns. There are known unknowns. There are unknown unknowns." and while he was talking about a senseless war, that quote succinctly captures the realities of game development. From every discipline, design to engineering to art to audio to vfx to animation to narrative to QA, we are constantly meeting and ultimately working through all the questions posed when making a game. And there are tons of them. Even simple answers can require complex solutions. Time estimates on tasks are best guesses based on prior experience, but sometimes those take more. That impacts the schedule. What gets pushed? Who can pick up what? Is it actually important? Day after day. Sometimes it can't get pushed, nobody else can pick it up, and it is important. What's worth understanding is that the closer to the end, the harsher crunch normally gets. At least, in my experience. Why? The more of the game that is done, the more there is to test, the more bugs that get found to fix. Those fixes can uncover other problems or break other things. Games also start getting playtested the close to done they are. What's resonating? What isn't? Why isn't it? How do we course correct? Yes, you want to get to these answers as soon as possible, so I always push for playtesting earlier, but that can get stonewalled all the way up to the publisher level (which sucks.) ANYWAY... there are just so many factors, especially in the final few months, with everything coming together, that it is very difficult to not end up in a situation where extra work is going to be required. Yes, this is with building polish and bugfixing time into the schedule, too. I've been on a project that had 6 months of "polish time" built in that was quickly consumed by lots of unforeseen bugs and changes that had to occur. So believe me, I've seen it attempted, but 15 years of experience at multiple studios has just shown that, even with good scheduling practices, the reality is that some level of crunch is going to exist. Again, I'm not advocating for crunch existing. I'd love for it to be unavoidable. I have literally made herculean efforts to ensure that my own teams have been affected as little as possible, too, generally to my own detriment. I'll gladly talk about my experiences or expand upon what I'm saying here as much as I'm able to if anyone has any questions.

"Forces" would somehow stop the former from happening. The intent may be for future dude to do so, but he's already done it, so it didn't work for any number of reasons (he was killed before he could use it, the mechanisms in the weapon failed, the weapon had never been tested at scale and an interaction of it being used had an inverse effect, etc). "Forces" would do something similar for the latter in their theory, too, if I'm understanding it correctly. Essentially, if it happened, it happened, and any interference from the future was actually either part of ensuring it happened or failed to prevent it from happening. Which also postulates that the future already exists, I think...

South Carolina. I ended up have a "peek behind the curtain" moment during my ministry and realized how much of it was performative nonsense, and the hypocrisy therein wore on me. I couldn't reconcile the actual teachings of Jesus with the mentality/hypocrisy of my fellow ministers and members of the congregation, so I left and never looked back. I now live my life doing something I love, while trying to at least live my life in a way that is in the spirit of what I found most important about Jesus' teachings, which boils down to "be kind to others." I honestly felt better once I realized that throughout my life, before I even became "Christian", that I didn't need a book to tell me that, as it was something I just inherently did already. Christianity, especially the modern evangelical version, seemingly exists to amplify hate coded as "love." Having a biblical knowledge at least allows me to corner people in arguments, to the point where my remaining evangelical family won't even talk religion and politics to me anymore. Heh.

Experientially, Astro Bot Rescue Mission is one of the best VR games I've played. And apart from that, it's one of the best platformers I've ever played. Yes, I've played a lot of platformers. I turn 40 on Tuesday. I've been gaming since 1983 as my parents had an Atari. Astro Bot was so good, in fact, that I finished it in three sessions. Not short sessions, either. I was glued to my headset. Or it was glued to me. Whatever. I'm not going to post screenshots or videos. They never do VR justice. Suffice to say that even stripped of VR it is a great platformer. It does what great platformers do in that, just when you think you've seen everything, it shows you something new. It never outstays its welcome, and trying to find all the bots in each level is a pleasure. Does VR add to the experience? Absolutely. There is a level where waves are coming towards you and my brain couldn't properly process what was happening and was like, "Alright, get ready to go underwater I guess." Peaking around sides, behind and under you is fantastic. I absolutely adored it. There is part of me that is glad I got a PSVR just to have had the chance to play this. It's so charming and was a great game to play right now. If you have PSVR and you haven't played this, what even are you doing? Alright, time to go be terrified.

Thread "Devs Respond: Are Games “Too Long"? "
I do think it is worth bringing up that game lengths vary wildly based on how much of a completionist a player is. A game like Assassin's Creed Odyssey can swing from a 40 hour experience for just the critical path, while 100%ing it with the DLC is going to push 150 hours. These sprawling worlds aren't made for a single type of player. They are made to serve multiple types of players by providing a playground of activities in which to partake, while making few of them mandatory aspects. At least after the game teaches you about everything you could do, just so you know it's there. Literally something I've been through on every project I've been on is identifying what types of players we want to focus our experience on, and what parts of the game appeal to each of those.

For the most part, what was shown in them was an extension of the party mode from Dropmix, where certain requests are made or challenges are issued that you must fulfill using the songs that are available. I'm guessing that isn't the entire game, and that things like the puzzle mode, having limited tracklists to work with depending on the festival, e.t.c, will probably be in there, too.

Hard same. The Panthers have been my team since they started, as I grew up in South Carolina. I was very sad to see Delhomme go (his press conference was soul-crushing); I was excited about our Cam draft pick. I did feel it was time for Ron to go, and I love what I know about and have heard from Rhule. It's a shame they couldn't try to keep Newton, but I understand wanting to start fresh as a new coach. We're going to have a few years of building. But the Pat? Fucking ugh. I've hated them since the "Kasay you dumb fuck why did you kick that out of bounds?" Super Bowl. I hope the best for Cam, though. It's been a rough few years for him, between injuries and overall performance. Every year it seems like it started well, he'd get injured, then it was, "he's only playing at 80%" until he'd get hurt enough to have to sit the remainder. He'd be back, "better than ever", and same thing would happen. It was pretty sad to see coming off of that Super Bowl loss to the Broncos.

Thread Sea of Thieves is adding (paid) Custom Servers to enable creators and communities to create unique experiences (no progression)
I think the custom servers will be a fun venue for streamers. I'm more excited about what new progression options they will add in the future for the actual game. On the secondary discussion happening in terms of PvEvP, I used to think I wanted PvE servers, but after the past three weeks of what I'd consider very heavy play, I've really changed my mind. The potential danger is a very important aspect of their overall design. I think the group I play with has only gotten into an actual encounter with other player ships two or three times that entire time. Have we seen other ships? Yup. Have we made it a point to avoid them? Yup. Our group doesn't actively engage with other players, as we're mainly there for the co-op experience. We're pretty careful and tend to plan all of our voyages around clusters of islands close to outposts, and STILL make multiple outpost trips. Greed is another major element of their gameplay. If you have more to lose, that's really on you. You have multiple ways to avoid that. Go to a single island then drop off. And while I'll never say anyone can play a game incorrectly, I do think it's fair to say there is a necessary mindset. And while I enjoy the progression, it's actually fairly frivolous. Our group just started Tall Tales a few nights ago, and while doing the first one, we were attacked while we were on the island. We didn't feel like our time was wasted at all. I snuck aboard their ship and caused some chaos, one of my friends lead the two other players on a goose chase, while my other friend quickly solved the puzzle and got what we needed. My friend who led the other two on a goose chase got killed, but then it became a rescue mission for him, as he solo piloted a boat back, while the two of us left at the island hid from the crew. Was it silly? Yup. Did it take extra time? Yup. But, my friend coming up on the opposite side of the island from where the other player ship was, us swimming out to get on it and making a high-speed getaway into a storm to ensure we weren't followed? This isn't even to speak of the other issues that would come from splitting into separate PvP and PvE servers, apart from what has been mentioned. They'd have to start to consider who they cater their monthly updates toward, and then one group would feel left out. They can't just cater to both every month, either, without hiring or updates feeling smaller. It'd have lots of cascading effects, for sure. Sea of Thieves isn't really a game about progression. The progression is largely frivolous. You don't gain power. It's all cosmetic. I've gotten into the mindset that Sea of Thieves is a story generator. If I lose a cursed skull or treasure chest because I get sunk, oh well. I just don't sit around and let another player ship destroy me anymore. My mind now shifts to, well, if they're going to do this, how can I at least cause some chaos. Maybe it's getting launched at their ship from a cannon. Maybe it's sneaking aboard and blowing up some black powder crates they have in their hull. Maybe it's actually taking a powder crate onto their ship and proceeding to go out in a blaze of glory while throwing firebombs all over the place. But it certainly wouldn't be the same if all I had to worry about were skeleton pirate ships.

Being that I've only done a few run attempts, I don't have a great gauge on that in its entirety. What I will say, though, is that each run has felt different, and choosing from just the two starting factions you have unlocked in terms of which is the primary and which is secondary helps with that quite a bit. I can only image what it'll be like once I've unlocked all five factions. Edit: You also have far more opportunities to cull from your deck than you do in StS, too.

Thread Like Slay the Spire? You should try Monster Train
So this game released today, and I knew approximately nothing about it until I saw it in the Steam new releases. Oh boy! Another deck-building roguelike! Don't get me wrong. I love them. There are just so many now, and a number really don't do anything original. But the number of positive reviews on this was really high. Yeah, a number of "I got it early" and "I got it free" ones, but lots of them had hundreds of hours. And these weren't just, "Great game! A++++" reviews either. Some well written reviews among them for sure. Ok, sure, $20 launch price. I'll give it a go-oh my God where did the past four hours go? This game is legit. It does quite a bit to differentiate itself from StS. First, you aren't a singular character. There are five different factions of demons (oh right the story is that your train contains the last piece of the pyre that kept the fires of hell going and hell has frozen over and the angels will stop at nothing to destroy the final piece of the pyre) and you choose a primary faction and a secondary faction for each run. The primary faction dictates your champion, but the creatures you put in play don't end with the champion. You see, if anything, Monster Train is part deck-builder, part tower defense. The train, which is the playing board, is four levels. Enemies enter on the bottom, and each round they attack, then move up a level. The fourth floor houses the pyre. If it gets destroyed, your run is over. In the first three levels, you're able to put monsters in play to attack the enemies as they move up the train. The order of placement matters, as damage is dealt from front to back from both sides. I won't get into any more minutiae, but will say there are upgrades along the way, adding new cards, relics, and meta-progression here, as one might expect. I've honestly not played enough to complete a run, or to know what the longevity is like, but so far it seems like $20 very well spent.

Thread Have you ever met someone who said "My kid is NOT mature enough for this M-Rated game!" ?
I find blanket content bans to be pretty narrow thinking, personally. There are T-rated games where the content is more mature than certain M-rated games, and not all M-rated games are equal in terms of their content either. I have three kids. 18, 13, and 3. My 18-yo can play whatever. My 13-yo is currently playing AC:Origins. I'd probably not let them play GTA yet. I'll ride around and do open world activities like hunting and fishing in RDR2 with our 3yo awake, but I won't progress the story until he's in bed. He watched the entirety of my FF7R playthrough. I won't play TLoU2 with him awake, though. Now here's where I'm labeled a bad parent by some...my 3yo and I go on "an adventure" every other day by playing through a single acts worth of Adventure Mode content in Diablo 3. For me, it's always been about them being able to handle the intensity of the content rather than the actual content itself. I don't run away from conversations about violence, sex, what we should and shouldn't emulate or say, what depictions are hurtful, hateful or wrong. Engaging them through the lens of mass-media content has worked well enough for us so far. As the world becomes more connected, with social media, virtual gatherings, e.t.c. keeping an open mind about how they themselves fit into social circles and what their new social norms are is far more valuable than worrying about them seeing a Doom zombie exploded by a shotgun. Oh yeah. I worked at EB Games back when GTA3 came out, and this dad and his 10-yo waited for over an hour in the Black Friday line for that. When I explained the game, the dad was so pissed. Grand Theft Auto always boggled my mind in regards to that. The name of the game is fucking Grand Theft Auto! Even if you'd done zero research, the name should mean something.

To be really honest, the issue with "maybe good news, the numbers are looking a bit better?" in the US is that everyone waited too long to lockdown. So you're going to see a dip at lockdown, but in anywhere from 1-3 weeks, you're going to see a pretty big explosion of cases due to the gestation time to become symptomatic. Just something to keep in the forefront of your mind.

Thread "You aren't a game Dev so you don't get to have an opinion on what is or isn't bad game design"
A number of devs have already chimed in, and I honestly don't have too much to add. I'll echo that anyone should feel free, and be able to express their opinions on a game. The problems occur when "bad design" is the criticism when "bad design" is used as a subjective opinion for "I don't like this." This is compounded by criticism actually being difficult, even for people in the industry. One of the greatest skills a designer has to develop is the ability to understand what someone is saying, without listening to the words they are using to say it. There have been some examples of this given in the thread, but one of my own personal anecdotes wasn't even from an external playtest and was instead from a junior engineer I was working with on a mission. He came to me one day and said, "So when the players get over this bridge, I really think it'd be awesome if a tank rolled over this shack, and then a helicopter came in and dropped off reinforcements. Then some mortars are launched, forcing the players to take cover." I took all this feedback and mulled it over. None of it fit into the intent of the mission, which was to be more of an infiltration beat for the players, where they got the drop on the enemy, not the other way around. However, what he was ASKING for wasn't the tank. It wasn't the helicopter or mortars. He was saying that the mission wasn't exciting enough. So I used completely different tricks to ratchet the intensity of the mission while ensuring the intent of the mission itself wasn't lost. After the next playtest, he came to me and said, "That is exactly what I wanted!" But it wasn't any of the exacts he asked for. That is just one example of something I honestly have to do daily, be it with other devs or with playtest feedback. It's why was right with his short but sweet reply on page one.

Thread Tabletop RPG |OT| I cast a spell
Well, you mention The Hunt Club as being something you want to introduce for them to actually go after and that having four targets is enough for a good number of sessions alone. As to how to get them on that track, there is one option that kind of sticks out to me. You have Hatley the Dwarf as a pawn to use in any way you see fit, and you have the players in a dungeon that they don't know much about. Is there any way that Hatley can tie into the Hunt Club, like, in doing what he did he kind of fucked something up, and therefore he's been put in that dungeon as a mark by the four? It's a clear target the players would be interested in, but if he has been double-crossed by the Hunt Club, he becomes an asset worth keeping alive. I do think that you need to maybe have one of the four Hunt Club members down there hunting Hatley (maybe unbeknownst to the other three) and if he escapes, he has to explain to the other three what happened, which puts them in direct conflict with the players, OR if the players do manage to kill him, it puts the other three in direct conflict with the players. Hatley becomes a good resource for telling them they have to get actual proof on the four (or three.) Of course, the crux is making sure they just don't kill Hatley.

Thread Anyone here ever have a NICU baby?
Congrats on the new baby! Our third child, who is 3.5 now, was six weeks early and was in the NICU for 27 days. Ours was because my wife suffers from various auto-immune disorders, and the doctors were worried she was literally going to die and were like, "Time to get the baby out, he'll be fine." It was a long 27 days. Looking back, I'm not sure if this was helpful, but each child in the NICU had their own webcam stream at the hospital we were in, so we could log in and see him. The downside was the panic-induced moments when he wasn't in his crib when he should have been. No matter how many times it just ended up being that they were a bit off-schedule with changing/feeding, the brain always went to OH GOD WHAT HAS HAPPENED?! place. We'd also get updates twice a day from the NICU nurses over the phone. He had a random fever spike accompanied by a small brain bleed a week in, but it turned out to be something that can actually be pretty normal. His biggest issue preventing him from coming home was learning to eat. He's totally fine now, the most energetic of our kids at his age, and my gaming buddy. The NICU nurses were amazingly great.

Netdecked the barrier Fiora deck because I could, and it's so matchup dependent that it isn't really that fun to play. I mean, yes, I've gotten a few OTK wins with Fiora's ability, but that novelty has worn off, and honestly the rest of the deck is competent but not great. The creatures to spells ratio feels off, it's lacking at the low cost end in terms of creatures for sure, and it feels like it doesn't have good answers to a good number of matchups. I did throw a few Detains in there, which definitely helped. I will say that I do appreciate that the deck has made me think outside the box a few times. re: Shadow Isles Honestly, what I'm starting to realize after getting continually walloped by SI is that they have very little downside. They're creature spread is wide, and their spells are answers to nearly everything, since board state is incredibly important. It's almost to the point where if they have Hecarim as a champ and 2 drop a Shark Chariot, I'm going to surrender. It's one thing to have a bad match up, but I've run up against that mist caller/ephemeral combo numerous times while playing different decks and my W-L record against it is real bad no matter what I'm running.

If this ends up being true, then this is how I see it. 1) For the people that keep mentioning the Tencent money, stop. Companies don't just walk up to studios and give them money without contracts about said money being used in specific ways. 2) If, and this is the biggest if, Platinum got the IP back from Nintendo, they managed to get it cheap using their own, not Tencent's money. I could see some weird scenario where it was part of the deal for doing Bayonetta 3, but I highly doubt that. 3) The KS goal will be for funding a pretty small internal team for around a year. I'd imagine the target would be somewhere in the ballpark of 300-350k. Maaaaaybe 500k. Considering there are boardgames that routinely make millions on KS, I could see this working for them. It's a known commodity. Platinum has a solid fanbase, and many of them never got to play this.
