Series X won't cost more than PS5. No way they are doing that again after this gen. I think they both retail for either $400 or $450. Both companies are prepared to take a $50-$100 loss on the hardware.

Yeah, because the power draw is constant. Then distributed between the CPU and GPU based on workload. So, by keeping the power draw constant they can more accurately predict the thermals and create a cooling solution based around said thermals.

Thread PlayStation 5 uncovered: the Mark Cerny tech deep dive [Digital Foundry]
It's not compromising the console's power. It's a different method of managing power consumption and thermals. And it has the additional benefit of being able to send some extra power to either the CPU or the GPU if the other is not using all of it's allocated power budget.

One thing I'm still not clear on... does the power limit on the PS5 allow for both the CPU and GPU to run at their highest/capped frequency? I'm guess no or otherwise there would be no need to divert power. If not, then what I'd be curious to know is what is the highest possible CPU frequency when GPU is running at max frequency and what is highest possible GPU frequency when the CPU is running at max frequency?

Yeah, a 4x increase in power definitely qualifies as "significant." I'm not particularly concerned with the next Switch being able to get to 4k. I still do all of my gaming at 1080p. Plus, I'd think attractive 1080p games would look fine on a 4k tv or monitor when viewed from the appropriate distance since it's an integer upscale.

They are small without the riser, but actually a decent size with the riser. I have the Street Fighter and Final Fight units. The biggest draw for me is that they have the original artwork on the cabinet. I don't have many complaints about the sticks and buttons either. My biggest gripe, and I've never seen this mentioned anywhere, is that they are not scaling the games (at least on these two units) up by an even integer value, so there's pixel crawl all over the place.

The game has some exploration elements where you can return to levels after clearing them with new upgrades and explore previously inaccessible areas of level. Kind of like the Mega Man X games, but with larger areas to explore. And yes, there will be a scanline option, but no filtering of the sprites. I ended up buying one of these yesterday... didn't love the look of it from the photos/videos and none of the colors really did it for me, but ended up with the turquoise. I have to say, the unit looks better in person IMO. It also feels really great and I like the size of it. I haven't really tested the dpad in a fighter or platformer, so I can't comment on that. Surprisingly, my biggest issue with it is the screen size. It just feels a bit small to me, but that also seems to depend on the game. It def felt small for SNES Online games and Capcom Beat 'Em Up Collection. I also thought it felt a bit small while testing out Dead Cells. Mario Kart I didn't have an issue with. It looks as if Nintendo could have possibly put the same screen as the regular Switch in the lite based on the huge bezel size. Had they done that, this thing would be killer. I'm also wondering if that huge bezel is there to make upgrading the screen size on the lite very easy as cost of components comes down. So... I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it. I really feel like Nintendo nailed the size of the regular Switch's screen as far as it being big enough that you still feel like you are playing/getting a console experience on the go. Not quite sure the lite conveys the same feeling. Going to give it another day or so (I've only spent about an hour with it), but we'll see.

Thread Nintendo Switch Lite announced at $199, launches September 20th, "dedicated handheld" (smaller, has D-Pad, has gyro, no HD Rumble, no dock/TV output)
I honestly do not know enough about the tech that the Switch and dock use to know whether the $90 price for the dock is reasonable or absurd. I do know that Nintendo would make more money selling someone a $200 lite then having them purchase a $90 dock and $70 joycons separately. And I know Nintendo likes money. So... I really think there was just no way to have the lite be dockable and hit the $199 price point. Of course, stranger things have happened and I could be totally wrong.

Thread Nintendo Switch Lite announced at $199, launches September 20th, "dedicated handheld" (smaller, has D-Pad, has gyro, no HD Rumble, no dock/TV output)
Well, if the lite was $200 by itself, but then you need to purchase a dock for $90 and joycons for $80... they (Nintendo) make more money. The lite at $200 is like a cheaper entry point into the ecosystem and then for additional costs you can get the "full" experience. It's honestly a no-brainer. My thought is that they either removed some hardware/chip(s) from the board and/or thermals come into play and it was just not possible to do the lite at a $199 price-point and have it be dockable.

I'm surprised that the Lite cannot be docked. I thought for sure that Nintendo wouldn't pass up the opportunity to sell people standalone docks and joycons. My guess is that there's no way they could include the ability for the Lite to have tv out and still hit the $199 price-point. I'm interested to see what people discover about the internals once these are released.

I don't disagree with that at all. I'm more suggesting that it should check for local copy if no internet is available automatically without the user having to put the system into offline mode. It should just be a seamless check for local save, internet connection, and then (if available) cloud saves and then (if necessary) determine which one to use or prompt the user.

Thread The Verge - xCloud and Stadia "are fundamentally different platforms with different aims and in very disparate levels of readiness"
Eh, article misses the mark a bit I think. If Microsoft bundles xCloud into Gamepass Ultimate (like most are assuming), then for $14.99 or even $19.99 a month (assuming they increase the price) I can stream a huge selection of games to my phone. I don't need to own an Xbox. That's a far better package than what Google is currently pitching for Stadia IMO. Of course, xCloud also extends availability for those who DO own an Xbox and are already part of the ecosystem. Really, they just need to get the service working on more devices (web browser, iOS, etc...). As long as Microsoft offers xCloud to people who do not own an Xbox (of course they will), these are not two different things at all. And I really think Microsoft is currently in a better position to give people what they want out of a game streaming service which is a Netflix-like subscription for games.

I can't speak for every case and every publishing agreement out there obviously, but I believe generally contracts define the dev percentage against the total revenue the publisher receives connected to the game minus specifically defined costs (platform fees, taxes, advance recoup, etc...). In those cases, exclusivity payment from Epic would absolutely be included and the devs would be entitled to their same, agreed upon percentage.

Thread Iron Harvest (Crowdfunded game and published by Deep Silver) is now refusing to say if they will release the game on Steam for non-backers
That's probably unlikely. Most contracts would (should) be structured/worded in a way where the dev would be owed the same percentage of the upfront, EGS money as revenue generated by actual sales. Honestly, I would think in order for publishers to get around this they would have to include a clause in the agreement specifically stating that the dev waives any rights to payments received for platform exclusivity deals.

Well... they did an extremely poor job in explaining how the service works/what you get as evidenced by all of the posters here asking what games Pro includes afterwards. I kind of feel like they were intentionally vague in that presentation regarding how it works--they didn't want to come out and explicitly say "You pay $9.99 a month and then you have to buy all of your games on top of that." That ending was so well-executed. The music is incredible. The slow mo shots of the Night King walking towards Bran had my mind racing... what's going to happen when he reaches Bran? Will he kill him? Will it be revealed they have a deeper connection? And the misdirection of the cuts to Jon Snow, pinned down by the dragon, were really the icing on the cake. I never saw it coming. My jaw hit the floor when Arya killed the Night King. Regardless of how you actually feel about it from a narrative standpoint, then entire sequence was flawlessly executed. Really awesome stuff. I have zero issues with Arya being the one to kill the Night King. Considering who she is and what she's been through I think the story has "earned" her ability to get the drop on the Night King like she did. However, I do hope we learn more about who the Night King is/was, who Bran is, and their connection. At least some type of exposition dump from Bran afterwards. It would be a huge oversight not to explain things more.

Yeah, this is my thought as well considering there's only four episodes left and still a lot to resolve. My guess is that they essentially defeat the White Walker army at Winterfell by the end of next episode, but either the Night King escapes or he is already headed to King's Landing and not at Winterfell for the battle. Things have to turn to King's Landing by Episode 4 or I don't see how they wrap everything up without it feeling rushed.

I totally get wanting to pull in new people with a cheaper model. The "Pro" model is more what I'm questioning. The $300+ I'm going to spend on that as an existing Switch owner could instead be spent on software which is a far larger profit driver. Also, they sold a lot of Switches in 2018. Now, not even a year later, they are basically saying "That $300 device you just bought is on it's way out! Here's the new Switch for the future!" It just seems a bit early to me for a Pro model. And it's not like sales are struggling and need a shot in the arm... BUT... I have no experience in selling hardware of any kind and no market data to go off of, so what do I know? LOL

Two new models at once seems like a strange move... with the way the Switch has been selling I'm not sure a "Pro" or "Enhanced" model is even needed yet... I can see them wanting to add a cheaper model to bring more people in though. I'm not necessarily excited for either of these new versions, but could definitely end up picking one up depending on price and what they offer.

Yeah, they need to develop and promote games that leverage the uniqueness of the platform asap. Games that are only possible on something like Stadia because a developer can have multiple units of the "hardware" running a single instance of the game. In my opinion, that's how you get "gamers" on-board and get them to overlook the shortcomings of the platform. I'm also super curious about pricing... is it a subscription or are you outright buying games the way we do now? Maybe a combination of the two? I'm guessing the latter is most likely.

Thread Prediction - Google will reveal a cheap streaming only device tomorrow and era will wrongly assume its a failing business model
I'm kind of struggling to identify the market for this. At absolute best the performance is equivalent to actual hardware running locally and gets worse from there. From an economics perspective, I'm debating whether someone who can't afford a $300 PS4 or Xbox can afford a $100 streaming box with a $15 a month (or more) subscription fee... I really think that these large companies (Microsoft, Google, etc..) have invested so much money into data centers and are trying to find ways generate revenue/turn a profit on them. As a result, they are pushing game streaming (even if it's not ready or even necessary).

Well, that's what I'm getting at by saying I'd love to know the details. With the way Nintendo software is selling on Switch, it's not crazy to say they are making more money by selling $60 games then they would by taking a percentage of a $10 a month subscription. Additionally, you are opening your platform up to a competitor to come in and potentially eat into your game sales/profits. I would imagine this partnership, if real, goes deeper and Nintendo could possibly be looking to offload all online services (online play, friends, chat, etc...) to Xbox Live. There HAS to be more to it than "revenue share of GamePass" for Nintendo to be willing to open up their platform to a competitor.

I just had a birthday and my girlfriend tried to surprise me with them, but she got the wrong figures (she got me Playmates classic collection figures based off the 1988 cartoon). Anyway, knowing these are about to come out at a reasonable price is awesome. I will be buying them for sure!

Thread Anyone else suffering from Acid reflux/gurd?
I have acid issues. I've been on Pantoprazole/Protonix prescription for almost two years now. The weird thing about my condition is that I've never really had anything that comes up (reflux) or burning pain in my chest. It's just always been intense pain in my stomach. I was taking Zantac for years and that did the trick, but then it got to the point where that was no longer effective. I went to the doctor and had stool and blood tests done which showed no signs of H Pylori. I then had an upper endoscopy with biopsy done and that came back fine as well (my insides look quite healthy apparently). So... the doctors never explained what could be wrong. The Protonix works like a charm for me. However, if I miss a single does (taken once each morning), my stomach typically flares up the same day in the afternoon. Crazy stuff. I sympathize with anyone that deals with this. Mine would typically flare up over night which would then ruin my sleep, but not enough to wake me up. I'd wake in the morning exhausted, laying in the fetal position clutching my stomach. I'd often need to call off of work. It can really be quite debilitating.

Probably my favorite place to hang out in all of Dubai during the afternoon. Secondly, I'd recommend eating at Karam Beirut. There's one at the Dubai Mall right on the water where the fountain show is (next to Burj Khalifa). There was also a smaller one at the Mall of the Emirates. For whatever reason, I prefer the Dubai Mall location. I love the food at this place... amazing hummus and bread. I'm not a huge fan of tabbouleh, but I can eat an entire bowl of theirs. Eh, Switch won't get swallowed by newer, more powerful machines. Xbox One, PS4, PS4 Pro, and Xbox One X are all already considerably more powerful. Switch's entire success is a result of the utility of the device (portability). They don't need to worry about how powerful these next round of machines are going to be, but they do need to be concerned about what Sony is going to do with PS5 to try and negate Nintendo's advantage regarding portability (I don't think Microsoft will bother).

The combat is heavily ground-based at the moment and the only air combat options are his spinning slash (which is really OP right now) and throwing shurikens. We definitely will be tweaking the combat (and most likely expanding it) if development continues and more in-air combat options could help keep things interesting, so something like that is definitely possible.

Yep, I get that. But this is a market that has a long history of NOT having iterative upgrades. They are testing the waters with this to see where consumers' acceptance threshold is. All you have to do is look at Sony's PS4 Pro announcement and messaging to see how cautious they were about it. Yeah, I could see that and I think it would be reasonable at that point (3+ years).

3 years for PS4 -> PS4 Pro and 4 years for Xbox One -> Xbox One X. All I'm saying is that these companies are going to end up pissing customers off if they keep pushing out new hardware too quickly. I'm not saying it should be 6 years between new hardware, but I think there's definitely a sweet spot that you need to hit and being too aggressive will push past people's tolerance. 2 years seems a bit soon to me. I understand Nintendo has done it before on the handheld side of things, but those were sub-$200 devices. I think perception changes once you start getting into hardware that is $300 and above. Just my opinion, though.

You know... I really don't have an issue with some of this. Inheritance taxes are ridiculous. How many times does the government need to tax the same earnings? Once I've generated income, and paid taxes on it, I should be free to do whatever I want with it... including giving it away to someone in need or passing it along to my children. The amount of tax I actually pay on my income (federal, state, local, sales) is absurd.

Go luck up definitions of income. Inheritance is not income. I respect your position, I just don't think one's money should be taxed multiple times. Also, not only is inheritance tax absurd, so is the gift tax. And that has a MUCH lower threshold. It's not about the millionaires, it's about the principle. No one's money should be taxed multiple times. Once and done.

A demo during the Kickstarter? No. The game is early and just not ready for that, unfortunately. The levels are just kind of random brainstorms right now of different layouts.. there's really no finalized flow to things. And there's a lot of work to be done in the SFX department. A demo in the future is possible. People who want to get their hands on this as soon as possible should back at a tier that gets them in the beta. Thanks, thetrin! :) Wow, that's awesome to hear! I actually cut the trailer myself and I have zero experience doing something like that. It's the first video I've ever put together. Glad it did not disappoint! All I can say is that we tried to make a Switch version happen for day one of the Kickstarter. It just didn't work out for us. We can add it as a stretch goal, but the truth is people are going to cry foul when they see how much additional money we need to raise to make it happen. BUT... it would be a realistic, responsible budget. Again, a lot of video game Kickstarters have promised to deliver a lot on budgets that I'm not sure how they made work. These things cost a lot of money to make. I personally have tens of thousands of dollars already spent on making this game. Throw in sweat equity and we are well into six figures. Not a dumb question at all! You can absolutely change your pledge and/or desired backing tier after you've backed. If we end up adding additional platforms we will make sure it is extremely easy for all of our backers to get the game on their desired platform.

Yeah, so you totally get it and those are the kinds of things we are going to be doing with the upgraded abilities. The Phase Shifting is granted to you for clearing one of the stages, but will be used in other stages as well (you'll need it to access areas of significant size in the other stages). Plus, the final level only unlocks once you've cleared the first six stages, so we know at that point that the player has ALL of the upgrades and can design that area to just push everything on the player. We plan for it to be quite epic. Thank you! Well, it's only the third day of the campaign, so it seems a bit early for stretch goals... at least in our opinion. We didn't do early bird as we felt like it's unfair to the other backers. I feel our messaging on the platforms was fine. Steam (PC) and PS4. We are a small team and we can only do what we can do. We are trying to avoid the Kickstarter pitfalls and make sure we actually raise the money we need to develop the game and deliver it on time. We could have added a bunch of swag, but then our funding goal would be considerably more and then people would have concerns over the amount of money we were asking to raise. It's a tough spot to be in. And unfortunately, it seems a lot of people have promised quite a lot on Kickstarter for not very much money at all. I'm honestly not sure how they were able to fund their game. I suppose that's why many of them end up with a publisher afterwards. I will concede that we did a poor job providing some type of exclusive to backers. I suppose I thought the beta inclusion would scratch that itch, but it's performed just ok. Honestly, now that you've mentioned it and it's dawned on me I feel a bit bad that slipped through the cracks. All I can say is that it's hectic creating one of these things, you have a million balls in the air, etc.. something is bound to get overlooked. On the plus side, we've listened to everyone and we turned around and offered physical copies for PS4 inside of two days, so at least that shows that we listen and are reactive. Or so I hope :) Honestly, not sure if that will happen before the Kickstarter is over. Hate to disappoint, but just being honest.

Thanks! I'd say the game is roughly 25-30% done. We are aiming for a solid 6-12 hours of gameplay depending on how much exploration you decide to do and also your skill level. We are not currently planning to include difficulty levels, but we do have some plans to make the game more replayable via stretch goals should the Kickstarter get funded. Enemy respawns are not 100% locked down, but right now the larger enemies would only respawn if you exit the level and return. Smaller enemies will respawn once you have traveled a good distance from their location and then returned. Also, the number, type, and location of enemies will change once the level has been completed (meaning you go back into the level after the boss has been defeated). This will help to keep things fresh we think.

Then I had to reduce gif quality (lossy compression) via another tool to get it under Twitter's 15MB limit. Yes, we are doing unique animations for different slopes. They really were. I always thought the PS1 era was strange. There were some games that got a lot of praise and, even back then, I just thought to myself "huh?" As for as this thread goes... I guess I can't really comment. I played probably the first 3-5 hours of this game and gave up on it. Total snooze-fest. And believe me, it was hard realization to come to. I was always very excited for TLG.

Those actually look pretty good at 720p! I only tried Doom on Switch in docked mode briefly and on a 1080p monitor... it didn't look great, so I think the upscaling doesn't do it any favors. Love this game though and it's quite decent in portable mode which is the main reason I bought it (again) on Switch.

Oh man! Looks like at one point the SFII and Final Fight cabs were combined... would have much rather had those four games in one (SFII, GnG, Final Fight, and Strider) compared to what they have going on now. I'm going to take a guess and say the MK licensing fell through, so broke out the Capcom games into two separate cabs to round out the line up....

Definitely getting Chasm (not sure which platform) and Dead Cells (Switch). Have yet to play Guacamelee 1, so the sequel will have to wait until after I get through the first. Of course, I have no time to play any of these games, but I'll buy them anyway and then stare longingly at my the collection and dream of the day where I can game as much as I want (yeah right lol).

That makes sense :) I've actually already kind of decided that if I make another game after Bushiden I'm going to move to UE4. I love MonoGame and the freedom I feel with it, but it just doesn't have the tools... And every time I've considered building tools I've kind of realized that the time I'll put into building the tool is roughly equal to the time it will take me to accomplish the given task the hard way so... yeah. MonoGame is awesome for how fast you can get things going if you are a decent programmer and comfortable with C# though. Just the other day I was adding brand new functionality to the game regarding player collision and moving environment tiles. It had to be incorporated into my existing collision code which was written a year ago. Less than 10 minutes and 20 lines of code later the functionality was in. Worked perfectly the first time I debugged it. Moments like that feel amazing (and don't happen too often). I thought to myself "maybe you're actually not too bad at this." Haha

I agree with him on the UI (not a fan), but that's it. I think Microsoft could possibly see a return to 360-like success in North America and the UK when the next round of consoles come out based on the moves they've been making the last year or so. They seem to be looking forward to the future and where a "platform" should be going more so than Sony and Nintendo. They need more exclusive content, but obviously they realize that. I don't think having Xbox "exclusives" also available on Windows is an issue.

Thread I just Watched The Last Jedi, why was it controversial??
My biggest issue with the movie is the way it discards so much of what was set up in Episode VII. I'm assuming the throne room battle in TLJ is roughly half-way through the movie, so at halfway through the trilogy Snoke is discarded and the whole mystery surrounding Rey is just a big "it's nothing" burger. Flynn is wasted, Luke is dead... Where are the remaining characters going? All that's really left is the showdown between Rey and Kylo for Episode IX and the path the story took to get there was kind of... for nothing? And contradictory. Going forward I hope they outline a story arc for future trilogies as the approach they took with this one was not successful. I don't think there's anything that Episode IX can do to "'fix" it. The other small stuff (humor, Leia space force powers, etc..) I can overlook even if I'm not 100% sold on them. Oh, but Canto Bight was awful. Easily the worst part of the movie for me.

Thread [New York Times]: In Denmark, Harsh New Laws for Immigrant ‘Ghettos’
This story is completely anecdotal, but it's a bit relevant and I also find it funny. My girlfriend was born in Denmark, but moved to the U.S. when she was one year old. We were in Denmark last fall visiting her family and during our trip we spent an evening with a married couple who are friends of my girlfriend. Over dinner politics and Trump came up and the two Dane's had a great time laughing about Trump and his wall along the Mexico border. This is all fine. What blew my mind was that they then immediately transitioned the conversation into complaining about all of the middle-eastern/Muslim immigrants and what a problem it is and how it must be solved etc... The irony was astounding. They sounded *exactly* like Trump supporters who want the wall built! I just laughed to myself on the inside and didn't comment. I don't particularly enjoy discussing politics in public and certainly not over dinner with people I just met two hours prior.

Yeah, it could be a lot of fun--especially for multiplayer. Imagine a sort of Mario Kart power-up system (random) with all kinds of variations on the grappling hook ability. Of course, you could also make rewarding the power-ups skill or event based (as opposed to random) as well. Either way, maybe something to think about :) Ha! ;p

This looks pretty cool! Is there any skill involved in using the grappling hook that grabs the chests? And what about power-ups/abilities for the grappling hook? Something along the lines of an auto-target hook that automatically grabs the lowest chest out of the air without the need to be in the chest's "lane?" Things like that could add some additional depth/fun to the game. Especially the multiplayer. Not criticizing the game in any way. I just immediately had these thoughts while watching the game play video :)

Well, like I said, very generally speaking... lol This looks fantastic! And yes, making the environments feel alive and lived in goes a long way! These look great! I think the 60 pixel height sprite would work perfectly fine for a modern game, although if you were using a 640x360 native canvas you would have a large viewport--meaning a lot of the environment around the player would be visible. We ended up going with a 480x270 pixel canvas for Bushiden as we felt too much of the surrounding environment was visible/exposed using 640x360 with our sprite sizes and tile sizes. The only drawback there to me is that we can't scale evenly to 720p. Anyway, it all becomes a balancing act and you are smart to be thinking about this now and doing tests.

Thread Indie Game Development |OT 2018| Come, help, learn, show and tell!
Thanks! We just aren't currently supporting 720p. The only thing that bothers about that is a potential Switch port, but there's plenty of development time left to find a solution. The PC version offers a variety of resolutions (all even scales of the native res) and then we offer a "full screen" option which will scale the game to whatever resolution your monitor is. Only a monster would use that option if their monitor resolution isn't an even scale of the game resolution though lol. 960x540 on a 720p screen is acceptable in my opinion. And who knows, maybe we end up using a 640x360 native res. It would only take me 20 minutes or so to implement that.

Yeah, I've coded a lot in my life (professionally as a career and also hobbyist stuff) and my goal is always to do things in a way that are clean and don't have the "bandaids," but sometimes you realize it's impossible to do something completely clean and elegant and those "bandaids" are needed. Also, very generally speaking, there's now *WRONG* way to do something. It's just possible there's a better way lol.

Thanks, guys, but that's not really what I'm getting at. I don't have any issues implementing the lerp function for camera movement. But when your camera is following your player as the player moves you are essentially changing the start and target positions of the lerp every frame. Which... is sort of incorrect usage for the lerp method. This is also why the lerp produces the laggy camera (assuming the time/percentage value is not too high). I think this explains what I'm getting at nicely: So... just wondering if anyone has taken this into account or if everyone just changes start and target value every frame and adjusts time/percentage value.

Thread Indie Game Development |OT 2018| Come, help, learn, show and tell!
Question for those of you who have implemented a camera and used a lerp or smoothstep function for moving it in a 2D game... How did you handle the fact that the target is (or can be) constantly moving? I suspect most people haven't accounted for that and are happy with the results. However, that's technically not how a lerp function should work as the start position and target position should not change until the lerp is finished. Yet, that is not ideal for a situation where a character is moving and the camera is following using a lerp method. Have you guys just fed the lerp method an updated start position and target position every frame (as the player is moving) or have you implemented something more complex?

Is that a worthwhile time investment? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for gaining exposure on Reddit? I don't use it much, it doesn't make as much sense to me compared to a traditional forum like this, and most of the gaming-related subreddits I've found make it pretty hard to share/gain exposure for your game.
