Haven’t popped in , in awhile. Mostly playing GRID 2019 (finally decent track designs in a no nonsense wrapper) and Daemon x Machina. Enjoying both but only really playing PC on the weekends. It’s been easier to play switch during the crazy work week. Definitely appreciating the cross save efforts between switch and PC. Hoping to see more in the future.

I think as mentioned before subscription services and quality f2p game services and non f2p service based games had quite an impact. My younger siblings didn’t spend much because they were playing Fortnite and Destiny. Both are fantastic “bargains” given content available and constantly updating with more.

Thread PC Gaming ERA | December 2019 - A Monument To All Your Sins
I remember everyone thought Halo MCC would be huge on Xbox. The botched launch killed it sadly. Even so Destiny is more popular than Halo on Xbox this gen and that says a lot. Halo just has struggled with all the fierce competition in the market. Every change they attempt seems to upset a certain part of the fan base. 343 has also just been way too slow. Halo 5 eventually really nailed multiplayer but it took some time. As far as why Halo 5 is not included, it was not out yet when MCC was planned. MCC was mostly outsourced and setup to give fans halo while everyone awaited the next entry. They needed something to move consoles. This is a retry with MCC, with the added value of expanding to a new user base because the Xbox user base wasn’t as enthused as many predicted. It was also just too hard to monetize that base after the disappointment of launch. Halo 5 was in development before Phil made his announcements about PC, so it sits in the grey area with games like Forza. You only have so many resources, with MCC being handled , I would assume it’s all hands on deck for Infinite for everyone else at the moment. I’m hoping they nail MCC this time without having to worry about nailing it in time for hardware they have been able to take their time it seems. I’m not a huge fan but want to see these games preserved on as many platforms as possible. And remember kids we don’t judge success by sales but active users and that is definitely the metric I’m most interested in. The delayed release of each title should help this a bit. MCC was always imo a great opportunity to test a Halo service framework. A way to keep both older and newer fans actively engaged with the franchise.

I still see so many posts asking about stores or going to other stores to check sales. Save yourself loads of time and just use gg.deals It already lists trusted storefronts and price histories including Epic and Windows Store. I also noticed that now when you go to a game page they will note if key suppliers like cdkeys has the game on sale as well. This is a separate list which includes grey area sites that tend to redistribute keys from physical products or potentially peer to peer marketplaces. I was able to find pretty much everything I was interested in playing sooner rather than later using the site. Per usual most things are cheaper outside of steam , but steam has the best refund system so keep that in mind. I used to spend so much time checking sites that now I have that time back to actually play the games I bought in the sale lol. I’ve been pretty behind because of work and sadly I’m heading in to work this weekend to work on things but I did have time to play the Spyro Trilogy which I loved as a kid. I only played Spyro 1 so far as it’s all I had growing up , pretty sure I’ve made it as far as I ever had because I never left the first area as a kid lol. No idea why, I just liked flying around and bashing things apparently.

codemasters really nailed it. Love that they integrated formula 2 as well. I also love that they try to build up organic rivalries from your time in formula 2 as you and others move up to formula 1. I have driver trades turned off for my first season, I’ll be damned if Hamilton ends up on my team before I destroy him lol. Kind of cool it gives you a reason to play multiple seasons with driver change ups etc. only issue I had was I had set the game AI to as dumb as possible but I couldn’t catch anyone. I’m pretty decent at racing games so I looked it up and it turns out in options the default threshold for my acceleration trigger was only registering 65% with my trigger fully pressed. So check that setting and adjust to save your formula 2 career lol. I plan to bump the difficulty every season. also Ferrari broke my heart this weekend. Just brutal.

We were lucky to get it on PC given the whole franchise and engine was designed around Xbox. I would say the bulk of the work is done and I’m definitely proud to have been a part of it with a lot of talented people who put in the extra work to make happen alongside normal development schedules. I think they should drop franchises on various PC platforms. How about Forza to GOG! I actually liked Horizon 3 way more than 4.

Skyrim and fallout were ported you VR. Different situation. When you have had a huge fan base beg you for content around an ip, and choose to build it around a platform that’s not as accessible as the original was on, its definitely a consideration. As someone who spent time working at Oculus we always talked about this possibility and came up with quite a few ideas that wouldn’t take away from the VR. new ip developed specifically for VR is different as well. However in the age of accessibility everyone is always keeping these things in mind. It may not feel the same, but the story can still be told and enjoyed by those without specific hardware. In fact it may even act as a bridge to convincing those who can to experience it in a new way.

Work slowly starting to slow down a bit. After beating Gears with a buddy I noticed I hadn’t played a game on steam since late July ! Currently really enjoying F1 2019 and the harvest moon game on steam. I know the HM game isn’t one of the best but I enjoy how “ hand holdy” it is. Great intro game to the genre , not too overwhelming for overworked brains after work. Never been interested in Half Life but it’s cool to see all the excitement. Hopefully it doesn’t go to gimmicky and they provide alternative ways for the fan base to experience it. Stadia seems pretty cool. I’m just excited that this will kick MS into gear. I really enjoyed remote play on my vita when I worked in the city. I watched a bit of the GB quick look and I’m not sure why Jeff notes it’s not as good as his expensive gaming rig lol. I think people have to recognize it’s an alternative not trying to replace anything. obviously my experience was better using my PS4 at home but I would rather not lug my console or gaming laptop to work everyday. A controller sure. I think it will also add another layer of accessibility for those who can’t or aren’t interested in investing in and keeping up to date with gaming hardware. I have quite a few friends who travel for work and Stadia and xcloud would be great for them while on the road. lots of opportunities for growth, improvements and innovation in the space that’s for sure. Great to see gaming offering so many different ways for people to experience them, we have come a long way that’s for sure.

You sound like me. I kept saying I’ll break out my PSVR again once summer was over but that has just not happened and somewhat muted my interest in investing in VR for now.Maybe the next ones? They seem to be more service based and probably never planned to manage the game across more than just their current setup. Think their focus is going to be fully on what’s next as Forza is always under pressure to deliver examples of the next capabilities of new hardware and services like xcloud. never say never , they also may have to restructure licensing agreements, car games are such a pain.

makes sense business wise. You have a business who you didn’t have negotiation power with a few years ago. Now they have a business who is maybe shaking up their way of doing things or at least making them rethink some things , so now you approach them given things are different than before and potentially Now you’re able to come to an agreement that makes more sense for both sides. not too mention businesses aren’t static , people leading efforts come and go with their own thoughts and ideas on how to grow their areas of focus. Sometimes it’s just a change of leadership. pretty typical in business.

It’s to get their attention. You have to take away something of value. Once you’re proven to be a “bad actor” in one game the likelihood you are the same in other games is generally higher. Their messaging is we won’t tolerate this on our platform not just this game. They also have other data to go off. I’m sure they can see account history in other games as well. It’s just a risk mitigation strategy at that point, not to mention it’s easier to massively restrict an account vs on a per game basis.

Also needs to ask how I feel and how much time I have (short on time, recommend me some games with shorter sessions). Yeah, you can play solo but the spirit is really playing with at least another person. Nothing compares to having to save your friend from a huge web after yelling at them to not go down that alley. Also to revive, takes half your health so better not collect all the health until you need it lol. Or trying to find what alley your friend is down in and getting directions from your buddy while they yell “watch out on your left !”. I’ve played a bit solo but once I played with my buddy, I just wait till he’s available and we are trying to recruit another friend but he won’t get off his PS4 bah.Bigger you are and the larger your perceived impact is on any one area , the more criticisms. That’s why big companies have huge PR, marketing, customer and business partner relations and legal departments. Windows Store Team redeemed lol. Xbox app is a completely different org and team. I don’t get the point of the app at all, in fact I don’t think I even installed it on my new laptop. Maybe it installed itself but I don’t interface with it all. I feel like far more resources are on game bar or whatever it’s called. Don’t know if this will help or not but here is what I do. Since MS is so big what should be a clean user experience often isn’t because of so many huge teams owning pieces but not really aligning. I redeem gamepass codes thru the main redeem code webpage then I see gamepass games available on my Xbox and PC. But I can’t even really test much on PC since I actually own all the first party stuff so guessing that’s a different license check they do. I only interface with the store once, to download the game then I setup the hooks to launch from steam. Launch from steam from that point. My windows login is an offline account (don’t like the forced merge to “live” accounts) , my winstore login is one of my Xbox accounts. I don’t see the store as anything other than the interface to the download since you can then launch the game from wherever you want. My buddy did use gamepass with Crackdown 3 I believe and had no issues, don’t think he interfaces with the Xbox app either. That 30 FPS lock on co op was tragic however, so painful on PC we moved back to Xbox where it wasn’t great but not nearly as bad feeling.

As someone who’s career has been built on representing player and user interest. You need to provide a valid business advantage to offline play. Bottom line is the more online, the more fully engaged, the more who spend additional money into the service. It’s more development work to setup offline with very little payoff. All I want is once the game service ends for offline mode to be added in wherever possible for archival purposes. I know some games have done this. No business cares what you want as a consumer until they can draw the business benefits for themselves from it. Another thing to note, potentially they have data from wildlands, and only a small percentage of users regularly played offline. Definitely see that as serving potential justification for having offline play be low pri , then eventually it’s below the cut line and here we are.

Engagement metric is more important than ever now. So expect more and more of the big games to go this route. It’s more impressive to show how many are actively engaging live services. Offline engagement is harder to track. You don’t get data until they sync again which could be never, you also have to do way more to validate that data. Remember it’s not just about sales, we need to show increasing numbers in engagement. Not bothering with offline gives you that boost out the gate. Simultaneous users will be at an all time high, etc.

When Disney shut down a few studios a few years back it was clear this was their new direction. They wanted out of development as it’s risky. Instead they would license their ips so it’s a low risk investment for them. Anyone can approach them with a pitch. As long as they have their own funding in place and allow Disney the ability to review the product to ensure the ip usage is to their standards. Yup. I have never seen user reviews influence any internal decisions and I’ve shipped over 20 games across multiple platforms. User reviews aren’t even discussed. Publication reviews are, and would often have bonuses tied to them. Only when community outreach became a thing (and like test it’s still super under valued with very little ability to influence at most places), did anyone begin to look at what users were saying and collating that feedback for the development team. Executive level see review bombing as further re enforcement that gamers are immature thus they would never look toward them to guide their products. Usually it takes someone with influence who cares to attribute potential business impact to issues to get high level people on board to fund improvements or changes.

Thread Extremely frustrated with the Windows Store and a technician was no help; can’t even download a game
Correct. It’s not really the store teams fault. Just like Xbox they got a new mandate out of nowhere and the store app itself was not their only responsibility at that time. The store probably should have been rearchitected but no executive is going to give you time for that when a band aid solution is an option. The only conclusion I can make is they have the data so they should know how often failures happen in regards to the store. My guess is it’s a small amount but it would be if they are not isolating AAA game buyers from smaller app buyers on the store. This allows them to de prioritize those issues for other things.Phil is now an executive stakeholder due to a reorganization of the entire store team (over 1k people at one time). This means he can now be a part of prioritizing issues and/or provide resources to help the team deal with issues. Basically a portion of store now lives under Phil. MS is a huge company so change and influence takes time.Happy to hear. The team is always working on things so potentially all issues will be solved eventually. I’ve tried escalating a few things myself for people on Era but I have no idea what happens once they acknowledge it and most likely drop it in their backlog with thousands of other things. The issues are hard to replicate for different users so not much anyone can do but wait and see and try again occasionally.

Alden is a designer. I worked with him at valve. He’s not a business guy in the traditional sense like Jason Holtman was when I was there. He’s more of a designer/engagement type. valve doesn’t have traditional roles but no offense you want business people dealing with business people not people playing roles with no real background. As far as Halo as I said before it is still the same strategy as MS has had since Phil spoke. MCC was mostly done externally even now you see two external studios credited. Yes 343 is helping , in the same way T10 helped Playground with Horizon. To say there was a big shift you would need to see MS put a pure first party developed game on steam at launch. That’s what would indicate a shift. Also of course noting the delivery model and login requirements which I expect will be the only new additions to the strategy. People should be asking about the next Halo game on steam or even 5 which is truly first party to really cement an fully updated strategy.

I’ve “yelled” at so many on this forum (because I like you all) about preordering digital (months out) , to give corporations more money they can sit and earn interest on while you get nothing as those preorders aren’t even binding. Dates change, content changes. Financially it makes no sense especially when you can preorder digitally up until moments before release. Ugh. Not how MS works. That idea would have been used with KI and probably when it was conceived because they will have 3rd party developed games with mp aspects and want to control that data and have it add to MAU the new measure of success set by the CEO. Platform agnostic is the future and parts of gaming has known this for years which is why wordament used Xbox live on iOS and Minecraft (newer one ) requires login on all platforms. That strategy should expand and is not dependent on Halo or PC. MS is big , different teams work on things so when say a API is ready well what can we use to verify? To stress test ? Well we are cleaning up MCC for PC and play anywhere. Perfect. Lots of things change but the original strategy still stands. You will not find a first party developed MS ip anywhere but Windows Store until the strategy changes. When it fully changes you should see same day all Xbox exclusives release across platforms. Your value of older games is not the same value the company has of them which is why their development continues to be outsourced as much as possible compared to actual flagship titles. MCC is a great test just like Apex was , and great marketing and lead up to the next game which will help grow MAU if the login requirements is true. Remember big companies take awhile to adjust. internally most just don’t care about steam it’s a console focused culture that only released on PC when mandated by higher ups. The culture is being forced to shift but that takes time. If this strategy had been in place when MCC released it would have been on steam eventually just like Halo Wars. Since it didn’t meet internal expectations it’s re releasing so to speak and the new strategy is now in place hence steam and win 10. No reason to stagger it’s already late lol. we also understand enough about the store internally, and PC ( forge was 343 test) simultaneously releasing isn’t as big of a risk especially once the live API is validated. In Recores defense it was also a super early test of the store and all of us early games had challenges and had to help drive store features while dealing with UWP. So simultaneously releasing was not going to be a thing any leader agreed to do so they could mitigate risks, not to mention teams didn’t get extra staff to support a new sku.

Even the cars can be driven by keyboard even more work for a game tuned for controller. It was also to begin working with the Windows team. Microsoft is a big your team priorities may not align with another so the sooner you can begin to engage the better. This was done to ensure a successful launch for Horizon 4 and Motorsport 7. Lots of learnings gained on Apex and work so the core titles wouldn’t have to worry about it as they prepared to release on PC. Saved both products a ton of time and is a great example of solid development leadership.

80/20 rule. 80% of users use 20% of features. The biggest issue is Valve is terrible at onboarding new users or walking thru their features so I bet it’s more like 10% for them. Cloud saves is not mandatory for games like how consoles have mandatory certification so many games I own don’t use it so I prefer to set up a save system on my own based on advice from others in the PC thread for consistency. If JaseC (mod here) had not explained so much back on Gaf when I used to lurk I would have no clue and I used to work at Valve on steam back in the day lol. So business wise Epic would be silly to go for parity but instead focus on the 20% of core features the majority will use and instead of funding extra features for a smaller audience that goes to another budget.

Didn’t work out well but even the updated version is 3rd party with 343i assisting. MS has been dumping this stuff on steam ever since the announcement. The more shocking thing is the abscence of Halo Wars 2 on steam as I believe all new content for that is wrapped up. Hopefully that gets dropped eventually. You should be thanking Satya as Phil is following the same marching orders as the rest of the company. Expect Xbox to be everywhere as they want to grow MAU hence Xbox live login. MCC will be used as a testing bed and hopefully we see Xbox spread to even more places on top of additional services. True first party landing on external platforms we have not seen yet. the strategy there will be interesting and hopefully will be revealed soon.

I don’t know I think it’s a savvy move. They have enough content to test the waters without making huge waves. They get a nice big up front check from Epic and because it’s a service game so deeply tied to Uplay where core Ubi fans can cash in coins for a discount that means they push more sales thru their direct store keeping the full 30% they would owe Valve And if people buy on the Epic store they get more of a cut there as well than they were getting with Steam. I think it’s a masterful move if it works to drive more players thru their storefront because they are upset or don’t trust Epic. Remember by them getting 100% and potential new users in their ecosystem, they can sell fewer copies and still take home more money than before.

Correct. Industry leaders have told me for almost a decade everyone has been considering dropping it. So if they knew back then I can’t imagine how ridiculous it must look now to keep doing it given the changes in the marketplace. People don’t realize it’s not just venue costs but key members of leadership and development teams who’s time is taken away from product focus to rehearsals, setup, prepping special builds, travel, etc. I would hate to be the person in charge of showing any meaningful return on the budget sheet that’s for sure lol.

Thread Amy Hennig: ‘AAA development has become unsustainable’
I think that’s due to a few things. I wouldn’t say it’s less creative , but there is a larger business side that has influence during development. But this is also because there is more on the line. If you are going to be making a multi million dollar investment over x years in a volatile industry then absolutely you bring in more of the business side to help mitigate risks. Often smaller investment and returns just don’t make sense for larger companies because of all the overhead they have. Bigger companies tend to pay more , offer better benefits, perks, stocks, equipment, office locations and bonuses all of which increases their overhead when it comes to staff. So absolutely they are trying to look for ways to establish patterns and garuntee returns on investment because there is no other choice in the capitalist system we find ourselves in.To be fair it’s not “publishers” only but developers in the industry. Developers at Sucker Punch for example chose to go hyper realistic and the few who preferred the Sly Cooper era moved on. The talent the big publishers attract are usually interested in pushing the high production aesthetics. That’s what they want to push for their careers.

Depends on your role and career goals. Some artists want to really push and work in more hyper realism styles and many do come from film. They don’t want cartoony stuff in their reel as they aren’t interested in pushing their skills in that direction. Same with engineering, usually the bigger titles have bigger challenges not just on the code side but management side as well. Some like to lead larger teams. Graphics engineers for example will probably prefer to seek out bigger challenges as they grow in their careers. I know for me working on Forza was a huge deal for me. The game has so much UI and allowed me to grow and learn a ton especially when it came to scaling (over 200 menus in the game). For me smaller efforts are fine but unlikely a smaller game would be able to justify keeping someone like me on let alone a full on UI and UX team. There is also a subset of game players who do equate more realistic graphics with more fun. They tend to be in between the Fortnite audience and COD audience. Some literally will not touch cartoony or pixel graphics. And of course everyone wants to be a part of the big risk that turned out to be a success. The industry has huge bias when it comes to that as well as far as hiring. Ship Red Dead 2 or God of War you will get further ahead just on being involved in bigger projects when interviewing. People also love they can tell non gamer friends and family about their work because bigger games are so mainstream everyone pretty much gets it. It seems minor but some people value that. And I think you nailed it , it’s a trade off . Companies don’t mind giving more freedom when there is less invested because if you fail oh well but if that big game fails it has much larger ramifications so often you have many people trying to steer that ship.

Sure you do. They are protecting their investment. They need to follow company security protocols and they don’t necessarily get to set them. I think the main thing is at least getting file delivery consistent since the Win store way just wasn’t working for everyone. Hopefully the rumored CDN change helps there. 343i is aware of the community’s asks so it will up to them to figure out how to build pathways for that while aligning to company protocols. That’s the difference with Xbox they are part of a bigger strategy and that strategy is not always focused on them but it doesn’t mean they can opt out completely. Phil has lasted there as long as he has because he understands how to navigate that corporate culture. It’s slow , painful, and you better not come off as a threat when in others territory. Now me , I struggle with having that level of patience but I understand it’s the only way to shift an organization as large and established as MS into new areas. And even if you do that right, another company shift can erase all your work just like that.

It’s not like the entire company and all partners signed on for it, it also seems some of the people have been engaging in this type of behavior way before this on forums etc. Titles don’t mean much to me because I know lots of people with big titles who have no influence on products. They have the title to get the pay because they are friends of someone who is influential at the company. People who feel super safe tend to love to act out. People with real responsibilities at higher levels don’t have time for seeking out niche groups to do supposed AMAs. Sounds like toxic people in leadership which if you’re offended by you might as well stop buying everything because it’s everywhere in the industry especially at bigger companies. Just usually it’s kept internally. Hopefully more leadership publicly out themselves so we can get rid of them. If they felt ok doing that publicly I can’t imagine what they were subjecting people to internally.

And? Do you think Phil Spencer represents how everyone at Xbox and all partners to Xbox development feels? It’s just sort of a immature way to look at things that’s all. Kind of being in denial that the real world is more complex than that. Gamers have to grow a bit, either become a shareholder yourself or appeal to shareholders to get toxic leadership out. I think we only win by pushing from the outside and employees need to also step up and push from the inside. Super senior people will almost always support those in management especially publicly. It sucks , seen many good people railroaded due to this common behavior in corporations. United front and all that nonsense. My point is the company is more than those few , be mad at them sure but don’t think the company is full of the same types. It’s just not true especially the bigger the company. I think someone posted a comment from a dev who expressed concern about the company pandering to certain audiences but like I said there is no internal vote. Majority of employees feel the same as you but speaking out can cost you your job so until you figure out your next move must people keep their heads down unfortunately. Sad thing is running companies especially public ones or bigger ones seems to not attract the best people, similar to politics. Most really great people just don’t see themselves running a company or running for office. No idea how to fix that. It always feels like even if we get one set of toxic leaders out another set finds their way in.

Seems like someone messed up , thought they were being hip then the company has to decide to throw that person over the boat ala Orth or release a shutdown statement ala Satya (hololens petition) . Yeah doubt this has much to do with Epic. Layoffs are usually known to be coming at high levels in companies up to 6 months beforehand. Obviously companies do what they can to avoid and minimize them before their hand is forced. Also do not think developers negotiating for a higher cut across various ecosystems started with the Epic Store. It’s been going on for awhile and is a big reason why contracts are usually covered by NDA since various developers have the ability to cut various deals , just like employees can in regards to salary. Thread 4A Games developer: If Metro Exodus does not sell on the PC, the next Metro will not come out for it (Up: Deep Silver Official Response)
So one of the reasons Gabe keeps Valve a private company is so he has no pressure to grow or expand. He can do whatever he wants. Yes he could expand , but he decided a long time ago to shift company focus from the traditional game development model to something else. He saw an opportunity. Steam was not some big business plan. I know people who there at the start and no one knew it would turn into what it has today. Most of the people who were originally on steam left the company ages ago. At some point steam began making them lots of money while Gabe saw traditional game development required lots of money with limited payoff. Steam required far less investment but was generating massive revenue the company could funnel to other initiatives. When you look at other companies especially public ones they have immense pressure put on them by board members, shareholders, to not only do well but increase areas in the business by a specific margin. It’s not good enough to double revenue, we want it tripled, etc. I see lots of people saying what Epic was in the past. Companies are not your friends nor can you talk about them like they are people. Companies will shift their approach and views based on many internal and external factors , sometimes their approach will align with your values, sometimes they won’t. Publishers want their investment back and are not scouring forums to understand what one service offers compared to another for users. You’re dealing with people who look at financial statements and forecast risk. Most probably don’t even play games that often. Their job is to ensure their company is making the best financial decisions. My guess is before the game was pulled they weren’t very confident in the games performance, maybe weak preorders, maybe the game went over budget and they would prefer to at least garuntee they don’t end up in the red. What many don’t get is it’s not about potential sales it’s about garunteed money in hand preferably before a planned milestone. Potentially the business required the money now not after release for some reason. publishers have more than one investment usually and often they can affect one another. All we can do is speculate as we don’t know the terms of the deal. These decisions are usually made by a select few , they trickle down to everyone else who is told to do their job. Anyone who works at a big company knows this. The majority of the time most employees are cringing at decisions that come down but it is what it is. Valve can counter offer. It’s business, they choose not too. I honestly don’t think Gabe would care. His belief is we will focus on doing what we do and gamers, devs, publishers can use our services if they want. Best way to get back at Epic is ignore them and stop giving them free press. Wishlist the game on steam so they can see all the money they are missing out on and buy it when it releases on your platform of choice. Communicate to the developer you look forward to buying their game when it releases as originally planned. That’s it. As far as why valve leaves up forums because it’s good SEO marketing for them. You google and they come up , maybe you can’t buy a game there but you’re still at their storefront and they look like the mature business partner. Win Win for them. The real problem is the majority of gamers and game developers can’t afford to invest in funding/making our games so now we have a third party ie the business. The ride has just begun.

MS has far more engineers than Epic and it took them a bit to correct that on the Xbox platform. I think Phil even tweeted about this in the past. Agree with you on that and that’s a valid reason to hold off until you see how they handle offline. Many offline modes in current platforms still require check ins after so many days to verify licenses too. So the details of their implementation will be key.

Another thing to remember developers rarely get to choose what platform to release on. That’s up to whoever is funding development or owns the ip. As a developer even if you own your ip you need to pitch to publishers and publishers may not want to fund for all the skus you want. The next option is to self publish to a select sku (if you own your ip, and get permission from the publisher who funded your core development) That means setting up a new side to your business, having money on hand to invest in the port , and resources. (Which why you often see smaller devs stagger sku releases) The other option is going full on independent like a Bungie and that takes lots of investment from somewhere as well. Potentially you get an investor who will give you more freedom.

Thread (Unconfirmed) 4A Games developer: If Metro Exodus does not sell on the PC, the next Metro will not come out for it
I think the “dev” is trying to explain what often happens in similar scenarios. The business side rarely blames themselves for failing products. That’s why development studios are shutdown, projects are cancelled, etc. Often what will happen is a publisher will look at previous performance of a game to prioritize sku development and release. They may see a certain sku was really low and decide it’s not worth releasing on that sku to mitigate financial risks and grow potential profit. They often will not go oh maybe we needed a better release window or more marketing or missed out on features that particular sku requires for a higher value. As far as sales publishers don’t care about number of sales other than it’s a nice marketing note. Publishers care about getting their money invested back and then some otherwise the product wasn’t worth it to them. Ferrari doesn’t need to sell as many cars as Ford and they don’t care too as long as they can maximize their value and profit. Publishers also do forecasting. So with some games you’re not sure you will get the return you initially forecasted so a deal like Epic is offering is a no brained for a publisher. Garunteed money is always better than potential in business. You also never know the current overall financial health of a publisher. Remember they often have a portfolio of investments going on at various stages. Sometimes decisions are made on one product due to issues with another. I don’t think the “dev” means to guilt trip or strong arm just communicating the potential worse case. As a consumer you have to make the best choice for yourself as businesses and developers will do the same.

Well you know I’m a UX person so I expect things to be streamlined. Pretty much every game I launch is unable to choose the correct resolution or settings and depending on what settings are changed they require a reboot. My time is limited so any tinkering I have to do kinda makes me not want to bother playing at least that day. On top of that I have my Origin games now added to my steam library. With custom scripts I found Im able to launch say Madden , from steam , Origin then launches , Origin then launches Madden. Once I close Madden from in game , Madden shuts down and Origin auto closes. I require this clean UX lol. I’m launching Win 10 apps thru steam as well. All of that takes awhile to setup. My Origin library was a surprise lol. There are also many games with partial controller support that require you to use a keyboard just once. Since I like to play with controller and sometimes on my tv it’s so disruptive to couch play. And when Gabe retires and his kids sell off the company I figured I should have some of my favorite games locally stored lol In reality with ISPs rolling out caps it’s now costly to delete and redownload so I figured while I’m ok money wise it’s a good time to start to back up my games locally. GOG is next. Always consider the edge cases! Ha. To be fair I’ve been doing this with PS4 too. You start to forget you even own things and when you want to play something having to download it and update is a deal breaker. Nooo PCEra don’t quote other mega corporations playing PR unless their past is clean. I find a lot of situations “weird” that involve big corporations and you don’t even have to look past this gen. PR is having selective memory when it comes to your own behavior, while trying to side eye others. If I’m a billion dollar corporation and I find it weird then I can outbid any company I find odd and set things right. But nah I’ll just PR it up for free. Just like real relationships watch actions not just words.

Yeah people don’t realize it’s always the actions of a few. Rarely does that so called bonus money trickle down to developers who work on these titles. I still remember being on a game that was not going great but had everyone crunching to get it done including last minute added resources. One day we all come in only to find out on kotaku the game was delayed six months. Everyone was furious because obviously upper management knew but didn’t tell us so that everyone would keep working crazy hours thinking the date was near. Real slap in the face to find out online. I imagine these Epic announcements for bigger games are handled in a similar fashion.

Wait till I open my store. I’m locking to a 1 year exclusive deal for providing his curated list of upcoming games minus horror because horror thumbnails scare me. The rest of you will get his list a year late. *evil laugh* On a serious note I hope people stop blaming developers as most aren’t in the room when these decisions are made per their messaging. That’s why steam pages are being pulled last minute because the core development team is being told much later by publishing. Similar to what happened with titanfall and EA. No one works on another sku with no plans to ship it. As far as indies who are self publishing I honestly can’t fault them for cutting deals to be made whole as soon as possible. When your house is double mortgaged and you need to feed your family I say get paid and live another day. Most indies already come late to various platforms but usually are much improved when they do hit so waiting a bit doesn’t bother me.

Thread I really wish that video games had more non-violent options. (And entertainment in general)
I think a lot stems from the people making the games. It’s why it’s great to see the barriers to develop come down allowing different people with more varied views make games. The most diverse development teams I’ve been on tend to not design the typical violent games. Sometimes it’s organic, other times the team was built up specifically to not fall down the more familiar paths in order to help diversify an already violence orientated portfolio. I do think many bigger teams pitch non violent paths simply because as developers get older and start families they tend to want to make things they feel ok about playing with their young children, etc. It can be hard for bigger publishers to take risks but many do fund lots of non violent content thru smaller initiatives.

Thread Why does quitting a job feel SO GOOD?
Control. Often employers and employees have such a lopsided relationship rendering many employees feeling helpless. If you can quit and walk away , you can initially feel a rush of regaining control. Of course in a healthier employment situation you don’t tend to feel such exaggerated emotions when leaving.

You all promised me you would ensure quality UI/UX work would be championed so I can stop yelling at people at work. Also as to why these surveys or feedback requests are done, welcome to product management and new team structures with new leaders. As a product or feature owner you’re often told to go gather fresh customer feedback to justify your feature requests and priorities. And who said people aren’t listening to various forums? I always have, and have fixed a few things along the way based on feedback from various forums in my career. Now obviously feedback is just one of many data points that drive initiatives these days. Also was hoping to see bigger ideas from ERA. Think past client wars and instead think about what could help improve gaming no matter where a game is sold or available. Would love to hear more stuff like this.

Exactly and it’s done over and over with each generation. My youngest brother doesn’t buy games based on reviews and ever since he was super young YouTube is where he goes for help. He tends to buy games based on friends who base on streamers. They aren’t even affected by traditional advertising because they consume differently. I think that’s why Epic is prioritizing the way the are features wise. The biggest issue is their core market isn’t quite old enough to have cash flow that isn’t at least monitored, but this lays the groundwork for setting expectations as soon they will be the biggest potential market to capture. Same reason why credit card companies love visiting college campuses, huge untapped market that doesn’t have any set loyalties or expectations yet.

Please remember companies are not making pro consumer moves , they make decisions that are good for business first and if that happens to be good for you then great but as soon as a better business opportunity comes along they will shift their strategy. That’s why you should never identify with a corporation they are not making decisions for consumers first it’s business first. They will always do what’s in their best interest not yours. Just because their current strategy may align with your opinion of pro consumer does not mean that’s why they chose that strategy initially. Expect all big companies to change how they approach business so it’s best not to get attached.

Just anctedotal , but my youngest brother plays fortnite with his friends so much he wanted to build his own PC for it since he only has an older laptop. Him and his friends were the Minecraft/YouTube generation as I call them who bridged right over to Fortnite . They play lots of games. They move from thing to thing with Fortnite remaining a focus. They are currently really into Dead by Deadlight. Before that they all played Destiny 2 on both consoles and PC. My younger brother also has a switch. He has a steam account too but ever since Fortnite he’s on maybe once a month. His friends have shifted to discord for chatting. He also gets news on his favorite developers and games by following their twitter accounts (and I thought I was cool following on steam). He doesn’t visit gaming forums at all but knew about subnautica being free on the Epic store and was excited to get it as he had wanted to buy it for awhile. They really are not tied down to any one ecosystem or platform. They have grown up surrounded by so many accessible options for gaming compared to previous generations it will be tough for anyone to hold on to them for long. It will be fun watching companies try because they will be the target of many companies soon.

Seems like the Apple iOS store only Apple has lots invested in the editing team and are very hands on with developers, they even advise on release dates, and their editing team identifies promising games pre release, often giving feedback to developers during development for bigger partners. They usually have pre defined themes they are focused on highlighting tied to various hardware initiatives as well. They do a lot of work to curate their store.

It’s not complicated. Apple has done this for years. Everyone tries to copy them but they miss out on details that allow it to work for Apple. Apple heavily curates their store and what gets seen by consumers, however I used to follow mobile gaming communities online not related to Apple and watch them drive games up the charts on the App Store. Apple won’t ever be emulated for many reasons but it’s easy to see why others think it’s an easy model to copy and apply despite no one else doing it as well as Apple does. Most games are evangelized outside the Apple ecosystem , sometimes Apple will further evangelize, other times they choose based on their own hired expertise on their editing team of pre releases.I can’t speak for Ubi but it depends on how your development team is organized. For Forza , we had a completely separate team on PC with different producers leading so since the teams had different people and leads patches may not be aligned. Production owns the business side and decides when to push patches. Everything in development is prioritized. There was definitely a time on Forza when the most senior UI people like myself were pulled off to focus on other things which of course impacted PC and their ability to deliver. Very rarely is anything held back. Most likely you have shared resources like test that have priorities and can only test one sku at a time. Different skus are often on their own rhythm of business depending on many factors usually it’s resource bandwith and organization. I’ve definitely had fixes ready to go and had to sit on them for awhile. There are many reasons why I wasn’t allowed to push them to the build. Sometimes patches appear to be sitting but sometimes there are conversations going on about risk. Hold off because we may have an issue or hold off because we may want to include something or a decision maker is out. It’s just how development goes sometimes. Sadly I’ve also sat on fixes that were never allowed in to shipping builds. Disappointing but the production team overrides development leads sometimes.

Remember as a platform owner sometimes self funded releases are done to prove out certain ecosystem scenarios. What if someone wants to release a game within the ecosystem that only uses mouse and keyboard. How should it be handled? This is a great case study to learn and find out otherwise are you now requiring anyone who wants to release within the ecosystem that they must support both because depending on genre that’s a lot of work and that mandate isn’t required for other ecosystems.

After. Nintendo was far more appealing to a kid like me. I was amazed at Mario , controllers, zapper gun! And the mat for track and field! It was quite a package not too mention tv screens were way better than the crappy monitor we had for PC. Also around this time PC started to become more associated with PC work or edutainment games like Oregon trail and number munchers. Meanwhile Mario and Contra were amazing to me and my little brother and I could play together. I have no idea how I got my hands on Doom as a kid but I’m also positive I wouldn’t have been allowed to play if adults in my household knew lol.

Yeah age and demographic played a huge part around that time. Most of my friends couldn’t afford PCs in their households, I was an outlier and we only had PC stuff because of my dads job. The best part is my dad claimed he bought the NES for himself lol. Yet to this day I have never seen him play a single game on any platform. I wanted to make games because of Nintendo for sure. SNES was huge for me. I convinced my parents to let me have it in my room. I had a crappy small Sony tv but I loved my SNES. Also remember during that time Nintendo and Sega were heavily targeting kids my age. Going to toy stores or even Sears you would find kiosks to play consoles. Renting games was pretty big too. I still remember my older counsin who was a police officer had a NES too and more games than I did. So anytime we went to visit his mom (my aunt) I would go down in the basement where he had his stuff and play his NES lol. They had no PC in their household. Don’t think people realize it wasn’t that long ago that having a home PC meant you were pretty well off. Most people had to go to public libraries or use the computer labs at school so consoles and arcades kinda swept my generation right up. But fast forward and I would say most of my friends in the industry and outside the industry play on multiple platforms.

To answer I was forced literally to create a steam account once hired by Valve. Since I worked on the steam side releasing titles and creating their banners (some of which still exist today, before that was put on devs Valve would actually help with creating banner art from game assets). At that time I was a big console player and didn’t find PC interesting at all. In fact I rejected their unlock all games key. I think they thought I was super different lol. But I started out as a young kid playing on PC , mostly DOS games and edutainment games were really huge. I also remember playing Doom, realms of the haunting , Myst and redneck rampage. My dad worked at IBM and brought home computer stuff a lot. One day he brought home a NES with Mat and zapper and I dropped pc pretty fast. Most friends had consoles not PCs around that time. Even after I left Valve I didn’t use my steam account . I don’t remember what specifically brought me back to PC and steam, most likely researching something. But I tend to always have phases where I will focus more on one platform than another for awhile. In the end it evens out since I have friends and a backlog on every platform these days.

Division was a huge surprise for me. I loved it , one of few games I finished the campaign in. Initially I was only interested due the the great concept UI and the UI they shipped. I always support good UI efforts so when those games do well I can justify to silly business people why it’s important lol.Yeah I have no idea what will hook me if anything so having a range options is the best for me. Gives me a reason to boot up things in my library and will be a great way to look at how UI is handled across a genre I’m not that familiar with. I just sat with a friend this weekend who is considering working at Turn 10 and I not only walked her thru current versions of Motorsport and Horizon and gave some history based on my time at T10 but I also showed a range of other titles in that genre. I guess being a UI and UX person I’m used to wading in a kiddy pool of options moreso than taking a deep dive in one particular game or type.I love my razer blade but I’m super concerned for the new ones if they haven’t solved their heating issues. I had mine repasted with high quality thermal paste, and run thru tests by a quality 3rd party seller. After that I undervolted to ensure my laptop wouldn’t experience the many issues others had. A lot of laptop manufacturers are throwing in some crazy stuff that can’t really be used at it’s full potential in thin cases without causing hardware damage. I’m heading back to work this week. Just a bit devesated lol. I’ll be around but mostly in lurk mode while I deal with the “omg it’s a new year let’s freak out about everything “ crowd at work.

Interesting as I too read and heard the gameplay was solid but then heard differently as longer play sessions wouldn’t be enough for my friends to drop it so fast especially coming from a developer known to iterate. Makes it seem like certain core mechanics didnt resonate with those who left. It also could be because of how valve positioned the game dependacy on its marketplace that many early adopters were just going for a market play and not interested in playing the game at all let alone long term which inflates the drop off numbers a bit.

Asked a few friends who have played card games forever , tournaments, etc and some who are game designers as well. The game itself has some core issues for them. Also heard what was already echoed here the pacing is not great. None of them mentioned the marketplace stuff , they couldn’t get past the core game issues. It’s always harder to move from things like Magic and the accessibility of a hearthstone to any new game however. What happened to all the streamers pre launch praising the game? Thank you for getting this fixed before I play the game in a bit.The one negative thing I noticed when working at Valve back in the day was the lack of diversity in their workforce. It’s a big conversation in the industry and I’m sure they too have been working on improving this as other companies in tech and gaming have. It’s so important to have people from different backgrounds and perspectives because when it comes to reporting features like this , I garuntee if you have a diverse set of people in the room while designing it those options would be there. I have a friend who works on a Minecraft and she noticed all the new achievement art that was being added only featured Steve, and I was shocked to find out there is a girl character lol. Satya (CEO of MS) has been very serious about pushing a culture of inclusivity so no matter what your role is you are to think about that and report on what you are doing to ensure we are building inclusive and accessible products. He’s the reason the accessibile Xbox controller was released. He has an disabled child so these things hit close to home for him. Anyway, My friend pitched that they use the girl on some achievements which seems minor but is really a big deal. I don’t play Minecraft but due to marketing’s focus on Steve I just had no idea there was a girl character. It’s a huge deal especially for kids to have that choice during play.GMG has been pretty amazing this sale and if you’re VIP you get to stack 15% off instead of just 12%. VIP page has a code. GOG has also been doing really well with games cheaper than Steam sale prices. Definitely check both if you’re on a budget. Thanks for sharing , pretty awesome once you import your wishlist. I hope everyone is or will be enjoying some time off. I’m exhausted it’s been a long year, new job, my cat and a close friend passed away, industry recognition for my gaming development career thus far being featured in a book that was released, internal recognition at work from Phil Spencer and other executives. Just lots of ups and downs. As far as games being exclusive, it’s just life. Online retail is just following traditional retail. Life is too short to worry about it. Support those you want to, and enjoy life. Everyone is mostly just trying to make ends meet the best way they can. 3.0 is such a guilty pleasure of mine. Luckily I have that content on PS4 and all the actual figures. I also downloaded all the awesome community built stuff locally before they shut down the servers on console. My favorite moments were being Darth Vader and putting him on the magic tea ride. It’s a small world eerily playing in the background while you hear Vader breathing and he looks ridiculous on the ride. I also as Darth Vader walked up to a NPC kid on a swing. The kid slowly stopped swinging , hopped off and walked away lol.

I remember reading where they experimented with machine learning for their AI. The problem was the Azi got so smart so fast it killed the fun and made it pretty much impossible to play. They then realized the AI had to forget random things or their formula fell apart pretty fast.

Thread Era, what's your thought on gaming laptops?
Gaming laptop is the only way I go these days. I like being pretty mobile. The trade off for me is I also have a MacBook Pro so I wanted a laptop that did not scream gamer and had a thin profile. These gaming laptops are prone to overheating and should not be treated like a full on desktop. This meant undervolting, ensuring I had a proper stand to allow cooling thru fans, and keeping gaming sessions to a reasonable time. I will probably upgrade my MacBook Pro next year and keep my gaming laptop for gaming and streaming media only.

Some open source solutions do. I’m using a script that lets me add Origin games to Steam. When I launch the game thru Steam it launches the Origin client then the game. Steam overlay works and I can even take screenshots as if it were a native steam game. Once I exit the game , game closes , Origin closes.

Still running thru a ton of games getting them set up for on demand access (settings, input, getting past tutorials, determining if I want the game to remain downloaded, etc). Some highlights: Really liked the little bit I played of Battle Chasers. Their chroma lighting profile is also pretty cool in an over the top way for boss battle starts. Disney Infinity 1.0 , I’m just happy they put the gold editions out on PC. Wish it was higher resolution but this is what I remember on consoles too. The series is just fun and relaxing for me. Was happy this worked and controller support was fine. EDF 4.1 , had to disable Xbox support from within Steam big picture controller config to get the game to recognize controllers. Not much to say but EDF! EDF! EDF!

Yup. We did this for 1vs100. We knew we had to have ads so instead wanted to make it part of the experience which worked well for a gameshow. We had to stub in things to pitch various brands so they could understand what they were paying for as it was not traditional ad space.

The PSVR subreddit is actually really good about recommending during sales. They usually have a sale thread with pretty honest feedback. Devs also post there. Usually I read there during big sales and that community is pretty hardcore so I bet you will find feedback on pretty much every game. For me wipeout is a steal as it works with and without VR. They really nailed VR. Check out the demo disc you can download for free if you can definitely helps you get a feel for a few game types. If only that’s all business was based on. It’s not. That’s why you have widely successful businesses operating at little to no profit for years like Amazon or Netflix. I was at Valve when EA pulled away. Interestingly I found this article where Valve talks about why Gabe also tried Origin early on and said it was ok. He saw positives and negatives but didn’t seem bothered. Now some noted that Rockstar is allowed to do what EA was trying to do so potentially Valve changes their terms. Now because business is petty basically someone got upset. EA obviously sees itself as a big player so to lose out on a negotiation with a third party store did not sit well with them. Publishers are also customers to Valve and Gabe talks about that. It was my job to engage with developers and big time publishers in the same way others engaged with the community. Valve not only delivers customer facing features for buyers but non public facing features for developers. All platforms do this work. But here is what EA won’t say. I think EA was also concerned about Valve having access to their customer and sales data. This is invaluable. Valve was also funding more games and seen as a quasi competitor and no one wants their competitors to have access to data before them on one platform. Origin was already in development as a drm and social network allowing them to bridge their console and mobile efforts. When this blow up happened someone at EA probably floated the idea to turn the drm solution into a launcher and they went from there. Had the blow up not happened EA would most likely be using the Ubisoft model but EA was early with the micro transactions push hence the first bigger publisher to bump heads with Valve after an unsuccessful buyout offer. The reaction internally was calm so no one seemed shocked. This is natural to do in business as it’s risk mitigation you don’t want all your eggs in a basket you don’t control especially as public facing company because shareholders want to know ok what’s the plan if platform X packs it in? Owning your end to end distribution is valuable not all value adds are straight dollars. There was a much bigger reaction when MS made moves but I think that’s only because many on the steam side are ex Microsoft so emotions tend to run high. I do remember a high level Valve employee yelling at developers on the phone asking what MS was really offering them other than money. lol. But today I doubt Gabe is concerned it’s business and no doubt he expects bigger companies will try various strategies. They will do what they can to mitigate but it’s just business and business changes strategy all the time at public facing companies especially when new leadership steps in.

I think I mentioned before the store Team is massive and they deal with way more than Most can imagine. They have been reorganized similar to the rest of the company and new leaders are setting the direction. Gaming is more involved as anyone can see by recent job postings. MS is not interested in competing with Valve as they don’t see Valve as competition. MS competes with Apple,Google,Amazon. Gaming is there to contribute to company goals hence the push for services and cloud. Xbox first party exclusives definitely move the needle on the store hence gaming is going to be given more influence moving forward that only happens in big organizations when business impact is being made. Commerce at MS is huge as it goes beyond gaming and digital distribution. Satya’s new direction requires lots of infrastructure work that sadly can’t be seen on the customer end so I wouldn’t expect to see changes for awhile. Once old leaders are out it takes at least of year of reorganization, new leaders to get up to speed and new teams need to form. The current version of the MS store was the vision of a leader no longer at the company and did not include core gaming however it’s only a small piece of the commerce story for MS. That’s the big drawback of huge public corporations they can take years to change direction which is why many independent companies purposely try not to get too big. The pivot to focus on cloud is probably the fastest I’ve seen MS do anything company wide and there is still lots to do here. Another random anecdote on the Epic store I told my youngest brother he could get subnautica free as he has wanted it for awhile. I was curious to see if he knew because I know he’s been playing fortnite. He not only knew and was excited but knew about a sequel. He gets all his development news thru Twitter. He gets help for games not on forums but YouTube. This makes sense as he’s the Minecraft generation and YouTube was like google to them growing up because they got exposed to gaming so young when reading was still a challenge. It’s fascinating to me to see how younger generations do things differently probably to avoid older nosy siblings lol. Too bad for him now I have my excuse to stalk him on yet another platform oh I’m just using my account I made for UT4 (I will never forget Epic!) for free games and oh look ill just add him. On a serious note kids grow up so fast. I had to set up his steam account back in the day so it was locked down and private and tell him don’t talk to strangers! Don’t click any links ! Now he’s signing up for things by himself playing games without me. Sad man. Sad.

Thanks everyone for replies! I’m using external SSDs for storage, and realizing a big barrier to me and my PC library was just availability. So having my favorites and games I’m playing thru ready to go is a huge asset for me. It is pretty fun seeing how low I had to set graphics before just to play things. So resetting graphics and getting past tutorials for games I played on console is my immediate goal. I used to delete things but since Comcast has rolled out monthly download limits in my area so I see no reason to delete huge games I will most likely go back to. So far biggest shock was 72 gb for Stars Wars Battlefront 2. I just don’t remember it being that big on console but this is post many content updates. But still shocking lol. I figured Rogue must be pretty much just ok. I have my favorite Assasin Creed games downloaded and ready to go so figured I would try ones I’ve never tried.

Right. Their lawyers protect them here because I’m sure they would say despite the fact you can that they only provide support for accounts that are opened in the region you live in.Yup and that’s all that is required by EU law then they are covered. Although I though way before they were already doing this just quietly.Change region! Ha Ha. Their architecture is a disaster , can’t even change a name without running the risk of certain games not working. So with GDPR most companies took one of two approaches. One was EU only. They basically figured they had limited resources to comply so only did bare minimum that affected EU customers and some news sites simply blocked EU when they ran out of time. The second approach much bigger companies tended to take. Technically you need to respect this law no matter where an EU citizen is located so they figured it’s much easier and technically ethical to just apply the rules globally across all services for everyone not just consumers but employees data as well. This is what I experienced. Now EU will work with companies as far as extending time to comply as long as progress is being made. This is because it’s a tight rope and what they can’t have is companies just pulling services. Now the next problem is these new laws can actually benefit bad actors or those that cause security risks. So that’s now a new area where lots of smart people are looking to close gaps in the tech industry at large.

Thread Steams "Competitors"
List wars do not work. Consumers value things differently. Usually people see a “feature” as a net positive, neutral, or negative. You will note far less neutral because consumers believe if you had time for the feature they feel “neutral” about you could have instead worked on a feature they foresee as a net positive for them. I still remember when sun roofs in cars were a big thing and my dad saw it as a negative. He once dealt with a rental car with a sunroof that was broken and didn’t close all the way. So for him seeing that feature on the list for a vehicle was a negative. He saw it as another thing that could break and cause considerable damage if it rained. My youngest brother and his friends do not care about Steam’s social features they all use other apps (making it hard for me to cyber stalk him lol) They also value content first and foremost and care less about the wrapper. They mostly went from Minecraft to a few games on steam , Destiny (console and PC) and now I rarely see him play on Steam because they all migrated to Fortnite. ( but I swear I’m going to show him how to launch it from Steam so I can continue to cyber stalk him lol) I only mention this because I find the upcoming generation fascinating and they are the focus for many companies now. Microsoft buying Minecraft was one way of ensuring they had access to the next generation. Epic has an interesting opportunity to capture the younger market. They don’t have huge libraries anywhere else, they are not into comparing platforms rather they migrate where they can play chosen content with their friends. Sometimes you are not the target audience because you’re used up goods. Capturing the next generation is where the potential gains are. That’s why you see publishers using part of their advertising budget on influencers and streamers. Time to target the new kids on the block who almost always have a different value system than previous generations.

Thread Would you trust Valve to make a single player game now?
Yup was their business model for awhile. I thought it was brilliant because the beginning of projects is the most risky, having to hire the team, hope you got the right people, hope your idea on paper pans out, it’s literally all risk , all investment with no incoming money. Valve would watch potential projects and teams and when they saw something promising which had moved out of the initial super risk phase they would acquire. It’s brilliant because they get to save on the initial risky part, get amazing talent that they can see works well together which is hard and expensive to find starting from scratch and they get to rebrand the game as Valve giving their brand a huge boost. I know when I was there they did assist and help grow ideas of those they acquired but the biggest add was helping with polish something Valve is really good at that often those with amazing concepts and ideas don’t have as much bandwidth for. As far as their ability to deliver a single player game sure they could but it’s my understanding that initial HL3 pitches just did not impress Gabe, then over time the market shifted and Gabe recognizes that at this point nothing they could deliver would meet lofty expectations unless of course you switch up the medium entirely removing comparison and disrupting fan expectation. Not to mention over the years obviously your employee base has some turn over which shifts culture. In reality Valve like most companies change their focus over time and what they do needs to make sense business wise for the direction they want to head and the industry impact they want to have. Valve would need a compelling reason why , other than just because as they tend to now do things to help forward other things along like VR and their service based games helps them continue to grow features within the steam platform and react to community feedback over long periods of time something they have been passionate about before community manager was a standard role at most other game companies.

Thread TMZ: Video of NFL Player Kareem Hunt Kicking Woman (Update: released by the Chiefs)
Hunt acting like it’s his first day in America as a black male, you can’t make me believe he’s not been called worse especially as a football player. He seemed overly hyped up and now everyone knows he’s an easily provoked black male painting a huge target on himself. I say easily provoked because had it been another man I think it would be seen differently as it’s clear this woman was of little physical danger to him while a man could in fact be. As a black person in America myself it’s incredibly disappointing to see. I already know life isn’t fair and this is why in the black community starting when boys are very young we have to have conversations on how they can’t do things the same way as their white counterparts. How they have to have measured reactions because of perception bias. Had an off duty cop come around the corner he possibly ends up dead over what? As a black woman clearly he didn’t respect those women as anything more than entertainment for him and his friends so why act shocked that one would not respect him. That’s the nature of the business he chose to put himself in despite being in a place in life to surround himself with people he respected and would respect him. You can’t change people with racist views all you can do is control your own reaction, company you keep, thus your path in life. His physical reaction to her doesn’t teach her anything it just further reenforces her views on black men that she probably learned from her own upbringing and the bias society has built up around black men. Off topic a bit just to show even I have flaws but my immediate reaction to this news was welp guess I’m not taking any more roster updates from Madden as I chose the Chiefs to play my season as lol.

I didn’t read her posts but I will say you can take the most logical and rational person put them thru a traumatic event and it’s very likely it will be near impossible for them to recall or discuss anything surrounding that event in a logical manner without years of therapy. Cosby accusers sounded “all over the place” too. Because so much time has passed in cases like these I usually wait to see if others come forward and I believe other women have. Now the behavior with others may not be as extreme or potentially others were ok with it (as in the case of Louie CK and Sarah Silverman) . These type of people usually have a pattern of inappropriate behavior that only gets revealed because they are famous and people who have buried things for years feel empowered to share when they see what others may have went thru , which also comes with shame wishing they had reported this earlier potentially saving victims after them. For people upset about those who had a feeling I get that but there is also some coorelation in how people represent themselves that often can align with certain negative and harmful behaviors. It’s a natural subconscious bias we carry as humans that allows us to protect ourselves. Is it 100% right , probably not but subconsciously it’s better safe than sorry. I have no idea what happened but the whole situation no matter the outcome is disappointing.

The 30% has always been negotiable. Usually it’s industry standard to sign an NDA of sorts so you won’t ever know what deals are cut behind the scenes for various publishers and developers. We already know console platform owners often assist with marketing budgets which is no small amount of money. The contract cut for that will no doubt be different than one cut for a game they have less investment in doing well. I think it’s more interesting Valve announced it in this way given the target audience for their message.

I think it’s because Valve has always been more transparent in sharing how they are making decisions while Sony and MS don’t openly discuss. The flip side of being transparent is you tend to get way more “feedback” than someone who doesn’t say much. I love legacy DarkERA as well. For the portrait can’t you just put transparency on the sides to create the portrait look? Does ERA support png? If so that’s what I would do.

Thread Borderlands 2 VR timed exclusive to PSVR for 5 months
Used to work at Oculus and Sony collaborates and shares with Oculus and others on VR. They have done a lot to move VR to mainstream and admitted they were uncomfortable leading with sales. I was actually shocked how low Oculus sales were in comparison as I assumed they would be much higher. Sony most likely paid to help get development greenlit as they have made huge investments in VR for years, just because other companies don’t share the state of internal research they are doing doesn’t mean they haven’t invested millions in helping forward a medium. The time between ports would likely exist anyway for better quality as PSVR requires specific work compared to PC VR. Job Sim developers did a talk on the changes they made for PSVR as well as other developers. You have to remember VR is still new and only a few developers actually have multi platform VR experience making these projects a huge risk. Sony also has internal studios who have years of PSVR experience that can assist 3rd party developers, this type of help is priceless, Oculus would do the same. As far as the newer Oculus device, I was part of a team working on content for that and watched 3rd party developers struggle along with us to port experiences as we shared knowledge and helped iterate as the final hardware specs were decided. I personally felt depending on the game and what quality level the developers valued not everything made sense to port given effort required, sacrifices which had to be made from a full on oculus version and the questionable install base.

Agreed. It almost reads like a joke account. Bethesda is just waiting for their next financial quarter to free up funds then they will claim the entire company was hacked and make good on everything...right ? Just to add to this because it really is a different perspective once out of core development but businesses also do predictive analysis these days. The rest of gaming just catching up with mobile but I also feel I have seen it before as a developer. All of a sudden really big project with big team loses half the team to something else and gets rescoped. There is definitely enough data out there to predict launch performance for established franchises. Now of course there are margins of error but I doubt business analysts are super shocked most of the time. Companies end up with two main options. Analysts predict best time to launch , then predicts performance expectations. The closer to launch the more accurate. About 3-6 months out critical decisions are made. Highly likely to be behind previous versions and the same investment went in then you either cut and delay unannounced features and shift resources off ASAP and launch anyway hoping you can turn around or you delay if you think potentially a better date is in the future and you feel you can add more features to help impact potential launch performance. I’ve been on teams in both scenarios but of course the business side isn’t as openly communicated as it is in mobile. Other times the return expected is just not realistic, not every executive believes in data or believes they have an outlier project on their hands.

I think the drops around this time of year are built into the business model and retailers often take a hit to get people in stores. Bigger games are moving to long term service like strategy. These deals help them in the long term as games will stay relevant for multiple years now. It’s like an early access discount to boost population then those people make their friends buy. The business knows how much it cost to acquire a user on average and expected long term return. Usually you see base game only with early cuts because just getting you in means they can make more later when you have to buy the dlc and you get your friends to buy. The timing of the phases of course is based on many factors. But now everyone knows thanks to data that performance of a longer term experience can be managed up and you can still end up on top in the end. If a company is still investing resources then they still feel it’s worth it business wise or may be using it as learnings for the next thing. When you see resources drop, marketing stop, and the C team left to maintain you know they consider it a loss or are ready to transition users to the next thing.

Interesting because as I read the thread title , given my own experience in tech and gaming I was going to say it’s more like 60 , however that number rises with the more bureaucracy in places of work. Yeah I buy Ubisoft on steam as well. Don’t mind uplay as I rarely see it. Ironically I interact with it more on console to redeem their free silly outfits and weapons I then never use lol. Origin bothers me more than uplay now because their UI organization is a mess now and the over advertising of access makes it a pain to even purchase things , on top of it never remembering my login. Yup. But it’s also important to note Gears has a strong style that whoever is driving Art at the time really pays homage to. You can refine that style but people who aren’t drawn to it just won’t be. Many people don’t really understand purposeful art direction and styles and how that relates to execution no matter the tech stack. I think MS top franchises can often fall into this bucket for many people. Definitely heard similar things about Forza as well over the years. Forza Motorsport has a new Art Director who should be settled in so it will be interesting to see if FM sees some distinct style changes in future releases. Just changing how you handle lighting can change the look and feel of a game.

Game development already has tools teams. You should read up more on game development in general. You also should know being in development no one likes to sink money into tool sets. It’s often seen as a sunk cost you never get back and tools have to constantly be maintained. Tools team are often heavily understaffed as well as technical art teams. I think nowadays the mass of people needs is less engineering and more content making and content integration. Gameplay and art is highly iterative. Look at Ubisoft teams , mostly content creators. Engineering is often needed to continue to help creative iterate and optimize and help prototype new ideas. Gaming is a bit different than other tech roles. It really is a technical art and engineering doesn’t get to just hyper focus on one thing most of the time. It’s also a business of specialists so each area is unique in skills required so it’s rare you have 100 developers writing code on one game at the same time imo, usually that’s over a time period where people leave, get replaced, help on other things etc.

Yup that stuff is constantly being worked on in the background usually by research teams first then production teams will often build on the work research teams have done. Results are usually mixed. Watchdogs 2 developers talk about this in how they tried to automate NPC behaviors in relation to the player. Hitman developers used machine learning and talk about hiccups they ran into. you should look up GDC tech talks. Industry is using automation, AI, machine learning in many ways. There are also great talks on pipelines and tools work being done. GDC is one of many places the industry shares and learns from each other.

That’s less a technology thing and more a culture and priority thing. Sony is a content first company and their culture has been built around that. They prioritize creative in development in all phases including recruitment. This leads to games with really strong art and creative direction and at times poor performance. MS is a engineering culture. Engineering values different things. T10 is an engineering led studio. Performance is number one for them. MS tends to have far fewer full time creative staff members and less time (MS is also management driven) compared to Sony studios. I think the recent acquisitions are an attempt to bring in fresh creative blood which is often hard for MS to recruit and retain. It should also give the core studios some breathing room.

UE 4 like UE3 before and Unity can be heavily customized. So you still can’t do an out of box comparison because rarely is any big game shipped without modifying the engine in various ways these days. I worked on a game made in Unity once and we decided Unity’s default text rendering was really bad at that time so engineering replaced their text renderer.

Ah yes it’s easy to assume. With any out of box solution in tech you do get some predictable outcomes which is why you may choose that solution in the first place however you can modify things. I think you would be surprised at what’s possible with Unreal. It’s used for more than gaming these days. I think you just prefer the art direction in Sony games. It’s high quality and is executed well. Tech doesn’t matter as much as the people and the culture. For a long time people thought nothing artistic or performant could come out of Unity yet Cuphead did just fine. I’m sure they modified that engine but they also had a very strong creative vision and made sure they had the time to fully nail it as it was a priority to them. MS tends to be technically driven and gameplay is the first layer of creative with some pull. The focus on multiplayer and replayability tend to trump art direction at times. Hopefully that will continue to improve as MS aquires more creative talent to help influence culture. Horizon is an example of a creative led culture as T10 handled many technology based things for them allowing them to focus on the creative. They also were not part of MS and built more like a typical studio when it came to creative staffing compared to T10.

Pretty sure it’s not in the Windows store version either. Haven’t had time to check that version out. I know it’s not cross buy , seems it’s just done to have as little maintenance as possible. Still a bit extreme imo as it was a completely different mode, hopefully it doesn’t become a trend, imagine if Killer Instinct had no online modes when released on steam lol. Seems like just a quick fix to cut it then dump the rest at a discounted price. I’m not into online modes either but the game isn’t really advertised as having cut a mode.

Find it interesting the blame placed on Mattrick and Myerson. Often misplaced imo. For centralized tech it means you need a centralized technology team. During Mattrick’s Era there was a centralized group for gaming where something like this could work. However centralized teams were disbanded as he lost the corporate war games. The other issue with centralized tech is good luck getting all the engineering directors on board. Don’t think people realize the full autonomy MS studios get especially when it comes to technology stacks. MS is an engineering first company so engineers tend to lead the way and enjoy making those decisions. On top of the fact that would be seen as a very long term investment something Xbox really only got with hardware. It’s bigger than acquisitions which can be written off if need be, you’re talking about tying your content to a propiatery engine you must keep up to date, train new people on (easier to just hire those with popular engine experience), maintain a new centralized team, etc. I doubt Meyerson or Mattrick affect this as it would have never gotten to them as no one internally wanted it. It’s also super hard for centralized teams to demonstrate business impact within the MS culture so they tend to not last these days.

This. Seen this type of feature cut many times due to low priority and with platforms rolling out this it’s even lower priority unless there is some critical gameplay mechanic tied to it. And yes there is ux and psychology around that time but I’ve yet to see that be a reason why it was not implemented on the gaming side. Also agree makes more sense to be driven at the platform level. To be clear games do have the ability to track this but doing extra work to display to the user is often cut.

Thanks everyone. It’s definitely tough being in a specialized industry doing such a specialized role. UI and UX has gained some traction in the industry since I started but we still have a long way to go to help leaders understand the investment matters not just for business goals but critical to compliment the industry goals of accessibility and inclusion. I always tell those I mentor, there will be times where it seems like no one is listening, what you do is not valued or appreciated, but keep pushing for what’s right. Many are in fact watching and being influenced in their own spaces. Recognition often comes late in creative fields. Having the ability to inspire others is awesome and often comes when you least expect it so it’s important to give back. I spoke with high school kids last week. It’s a big deal to see someone that looks like you doing what you want to. I never had that, so now I try to be that for others.

Great to see his family, kids and his business being a great positive focus for him. Also loved that he still worked out despite his situation. Oh I was being sarcastic with how right on you were. Often companies and countries have figure heads so it’s assumed that they are “running” things. Of course as you get older you realize it’s not so cut and dry. There are also variables that most of us just won’t ever know which decisions are based on daily in business. I remember when the team who made Kinect adventures shipped on the premise we would be working on a next gen new ip. I mean we had a rockstar team, vets from film (Disney,Sony ) and gaming (Mass effect , god of war, etc) , no way you stack a team this talented for just Kinect. Fast forward and we not only had to do more Kinect but went outside gaming to interactive tv then hololens. Morale sucked. But from a leader POV, you have two options pivot your team (100+) where funding is or cause them to lose their jobs. You can’t share this at the time of course but decisions at that level can be tough. Lay offs don’t just affect the people and their families directly impacted but everyone who is left too. Business is really just a bunch of shifting priorities and most of the time there is good reason behind why things are not as valued. Leaders struggle with the right transparency balance. It’s also rarely one person at fault and yes fall people are set up all the time even just to boost morale internally. Microsoft’s latest thing is “Our mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.“ This is the company goal so you can see why gaming is not a huge priority. I’ve been on teams that had reviews with Gates,Ballmer. Gates: straight shooter , knows his stuff , be prepared to answer technical questions. With hololens he wanted to know about text clarity because how will office translate? What’s the app product pipeline and tech stack? Ballmer: no idea how he would react just be prepared for a reaction. Could swing either way, less technical than Gates. Satya: from what I hear , much more personable but knows his stuff and will question just not nearly as intense. However his decisions are swift and impactful. Impress and he will remember but I also have a feeling he may remember disappointments too lol. From my interactions with Phil. He’s legit just a nice guy. Maybe too nice to be honest. It can be difficult to get things done when nice in corporate environments. I always got the sense he’s loyal and one to wait for the right opportunity to push vs other leader types who will run over whoever is blocking their agenda for that week. Phil is tough to judge because a lot of his role is public facing these days which is why Matt was elevated. Public facing roles representing big companies is no joke and you need to say what is required at times. Reminds me of upselling rewards when I worked at blockbuster back in the day lol. Also feel free to post! I only share my experiences just to add a different view.

Whoa! There is no place for logic on these boards! You seem like an adult who pays attention. Who sent you!? But seriously, it’s clear people who have been exposed to corporations and pay attention vs those who want a black and white answer that just doesn’t exist. As far as Ballmer vs Nadella, as someone who has been at the company during both of their tenures; Nadella has a very different style that makes him much more approachable. He’s doing much more to try to change the overall company culture and is a huge proponent of accessibility given he has a child who is disabled. So things like the new Xbox controller get green lit under him. His notable goals are to transform the company for the future, some of which Ballmer had already started. Windows being deprioritized and Cloud and AI being pushed is a cornerstone of that strategy. He also has grown MS focus and contribution to open source. Does he care about games? He does see the potential impact on business but he’s also an old school MS guy who never worked on the gaming side. Gaming at MS has largely been about marketing a cool hip brand for Microsoft. From time to time gaming will get boosts of financial support which stop and then they are told to deliver on skeletal budgets. So it will be interesting to watch per usual. PC gaming is way down the list of priorities and that’s just a culture thing. Not saying it can’t change but they would need to bring in new blood. They have in the past but it didn’t last long as the focus shifted before that person could even get going.

We hired a guy who worked at haunted houses as monsters. He played Stubbs and possibly other characters. I just remember I was so shocked because one I was new to the industry so seeing how stuff like that was made was fascinating as back in the day it was rarely shown. Second, this dude was amazing, he made all the noises too and really got into the character, despite the fact noises would be cut as audio would handle that in post. Third with just how chill Alex was. He had just left Bungie and returned to Chicago to do his own thing. No ego , over lunch he would discuss all these crazy game ideas he had. Really was great to see that even industry veterans were just like me, just a huge fan of games and creating them. It’s simple really externally developed it can show up on steam , usually after development is done. Hence KI was put on steam once all major content was done. If developed by an internal studio it hasn’t been put on steam. Forza Horizon uses ForzaTech so even though developed externally pre buyout MS has more invested. State of Decay, if devs mentioned steam pre buyout MS would honor just don’t expect it on steam until development is done. That’s the obvious current strategy, which of course is subject to change at anytime.

The industry does try to heavily control what devs say about their work ironically. Usually when you see devs speaking out and still employed its been approved. You wont see devs really speak out about their work until they have moved on or left the industry in most cases. I have given a few public talks, and had to get permission to even use footage. I know other places where the talk has to be presented in front of legal reps before its given the greenlight to be presented. I am a huge fan of telling people to communicate to those making the calls. Even internally, I tell fellow co workers to take their concerns up a level. For too long everyone has been yelling at each other and not at those responsible. If the company is public, leadership should be publicly named, and using other online resources, it should not be hard to understand the leadership tree for a product.

Those were some tough lessons learned lol. It exists in just about everything. Had one of the top 4 tech companies heavily recruit me for years. Decided to take them up on a "special" event! *sound familiar* They sent me a fancy menu, had to choose options for a big 4 course meal and dessert. The day consisted of listening to top execs tell stories (all positive of course), ride around to various buildings they owned (only the newer ones), and the ability to see what top secret teams were working on , a fancy meal at a high end Italian restaurant, then back to their HQ for free drinks, swag bag, and open house with various teams. So much fun! Who would NOT want to work here!? Except I know people who already work there, and the image created (btw they flew people out from all over the world! which was the best part for me as I met some really smart people I otherwise would have never met) is not true of day to day working at the company. Hype is a 2 way street, you only notice it more in gaming because its a bigger interest of yours. But pretty much any industry that has "core" fans and hobbyists, general tech included, has been doing this for years. People are pissed at Apple every year. You see the LEGO community, Its there too. Shocked you use the movie industry because I would say it exists there as well, if you are around enthusiasts.

Then those people will have a hard life. That’s marketing 101. Everything even getting a new job will be “hyped”. You don’t get burned by being a mature rational human being. Corporations are not your friends or your family. I totally get people disappointed in friends and family at times. But corporations? Nah. I was just reading how now corporations have customer value ratings meaning using multiple data points they decide how much long term financial value you equal to them. Based on that value is how you will get treated , ie the more valuable they perceive you the quicker you get thru to valuable customer support, or get extra deals, etc. Sometimes you are the focus and sometimes you aren’t. Corporations have to show growth and to do that it means pushing their brands outside normal channels. Their approach may not make people feel great but once they brought Diablo to console, Mobile was definitely coming. Now if this was D4 I might understand. I want to be clear I am not against people expressing their opinions. But I think we all know the way to get corporations to listen is to impact their bottom line.

Even if those people throw an extra 50.00 toward mtx they still are spending less per year on gaming than most people on Era. Most justify it because they are spending lots of hours in these games. Console is just following mobile. Just like mobile some developers do it well , some clearly try to take advantage of users. Keep users engaged and they tend to spend additional money within your ecosystem. Acquiring users is the expensive part.

I never messed with GFWL marketplace. Back then there was a huge disconnect between Windows and Gaming way more than even now. Xbox had approached the Windows team about collaborating as Xbox didn’t have the resources or funding in comparison and the Windows team at that time was riding high and didn’t care about games. Xbox only existed because of money they were generating as far as many were concerned. I have no idea on who was even driving the GFWL initiative but no way was it a business priority to either part of the company it needed to be in order to become a long term success. I think someone was passionate about PC gaming which was pretty anti Xbox and Windows culture at the time and tried to drive and show impact hoping the company would see value and properly invest. 1vs100 was super innovative, something fresh and such a talented unique team. It did not print money directly instead it helped drive growth indirectly. We knew we were driving Xbox live gold memberships because we were hitting a new audience. But ip costs, development risks being innovative, and a change of leadership killed it. I think from a business perspective MS chose Kinect over 1vs100 type initiatives as Kinect could be driven from various business sectors and would generate more growth and was easier to market. Also new leadership likes to start their own initiatives vs carry on previous ones.

Often times it’s priority set by those who run the studio. You all would not believe the rework done in certain areas vs others due to this. You can usually tell by the studio make up and what roles are fulltime vs outsourced. Often times a group of people will get together in their own time just to try to improve something that is not seen as a priority. Sometimes it’s allowed in other times not due to politics. Sadly this is how many big corporations work. They will NOT greenlight funding to improve anything “no one” is using. You have to get people using it first, show that there is legit business impact because x num of users are being affected before they will even green light dedicating resources at all. In the beginning it will only be resources to react , not enough resources to plan beyond or create new features. Despite many of us in design who argue if you are consistently investing and improving users will come, business focused people who control resources use content to lure and wait until a threshold is hit before greenlighting any resources. The client is not part of the business plan metrics and they are hard to convince it needs to be when they see other standalone games doing fine with minimal viable clients. Common sense sadly is not a metric and neither is one company as they can be seen as a edge case, not a viable business model to duplicate. I do remember Game Room, know quite a few who worked on it. It had some overlap with the 1vs100 era which I worked on. I never messed with it tho then it was quietly shut down , at least internally.

Shouldn’t be too shocked I would say creatives are often the most taken advantage of business wise and have been for a long time. “Starving Artist” terminology has been around forever for a reason. Creatives tend not to be profit driven and are driven instead by having the ability to create and share their works. The people ending up with the most student loan debt often end up being creatives, with Art schools being overly expensive and Art careers being paid much less on average than their technical or business centric counterparts. I always wondered why creative majors in school did not require a certain level of business classes. Interesting, thanks for linking the presentation. It reminds me of the discussion that happened with both developers and consumers in regards to the Apple store. With everything being a race to the bottom and people realizing the 99 cent model just was not sustainable if they wanted quality games from independent developers vs free to play games full of micro transactions and ads from bigger corporations.

Bonus amount is also usually tied to both seniority and tenure. Bonuses are also taxed differently compared to salary. The industry also relies heavily on contractors who are usually ineligible for shipping bonuses. Also important to note, post ship can mean many different things and it varies by company and project. I’ve heard of some companies not paying out bonuses for many months post ship or only after specific sales milestones are met. Some companies would even tie a portion of bonuses to metacritic scores.

Many people who came from core gaming backgrounds and wanted to continue making core gaming products left the company including Kenneth Scott. One thing I will say is oculus has extremely talented hardware people. Facebook is not interested in making core games or content only owning platforms and utilizing their leverage in social engineering. They too missed the mobile wave and have constantly regretted it. They want to be the OS. But really it’s just biding time until AR can go more mainstream which makes far more sense for Facebook’s trajectory and aligns with social and ad opportunities with the ability to reach a much wider audience.

I think if you buy from the MS store for instance they had up to a 4 year warranty you could get. They will just replace it out right. The only potential concern is if they have it in stock. Where I purchased had up to a 2 year warranty and any issues I have I can mail the laptop to them. These store warranties are in addition to your laptop manufacturing warranty, the store just provides a nice stop gap and let them deal with the manufacturer instead of you. Amazon also has an extended warranty you can purchase and they too will replace it. I had no idea about this stuff until I went into full on research mode. I saw many people who were exchanging laptops (not just razer) multiple times to get what they deemed a “good” one. I went with Hidevolution because of their great customer service and they actually stress test the machines with games , check monitors, apply thermal paste (this was a big cause of laptop issues across brands, paste job was poor) ,etc. I never once dealt with razer and have not so far. That’s another big change I noted it used to be going thru the manufacturer was a safe bet but now people are having issues even with brands like Dell, and depending on your living situation having to mail it vs return/swap at a store near you makes a big difference. Dell is definitely not without problems these days either. More reliable than razer sure but that won’t matter if you’re one of the people with the issue with them.

Razer was put on my radar because of a stint I did at Oculus. Facebook (who owns them) started giving everyone an option of the razer laptop. It’s really the only laptop that can run VR and isn’t terrible to travel with. I knew Razer had been making laptops for awhile but I was overall impressed with how far they had come at a glance. I also looked at the Dell XPS and it will throttle similar to the MacBook Pros. I also found a fantastic video comparing both the razer and the xps and the performance gap for gaming was just too much given I wanted a laptop for gaming primarily and realize I will most likely upgrade my MacBook Pro for personal work stuff next year. Comparison Video for those interested: Also agree manufacturers are just putting in components to have a higher number in specs but what you actually get out of it is questionable. I feel much better with mine underclocked because of this behavior. Yeah which is why most people don’t buy thru Razer which allows you a longer warranty and no requirement to deal with them directly. I had not bought a laptop in YEARS but I will say none of the brands seem to built to last the way laptops were built in the past. Reminds me of how fragile phones have gotten, like they expect people to upgrade every 2 years or so. I have a buddy who got an XPS not even for gaming and his was sent back for repair in the first month. Another learning I had is wait out first batches. The first batch of the Razer Blade 15 had lots of issues that subsequent batches did not have. It seemed to be a reoccurring theme across many top brands.

Well I have multiple challenges, one being I’m used to having to at least check out a wide variety of games just to enter all the UI/UX features into my brain. Obviously I can’t finish them all but I don’t need to. Now when playing for myself and not research some of my research habits and the increased availability of games makes it hard to stick with anything for long. Time is still my biggest challenge. I really am more a seasonal gamer as I’ve gotten older. NFL season means playing games I can play while the football game is on so story driven games get delayed and stuff like Forza bubbles up. I realize November thru January when holidays hit, work slows down, new tv content slows down, is the perfect time for more story based games. Now with my new laptop, I’m having fun trying games from my steam library that I can now run lol. Sounds pretty chill. Thanks for posting. Your monthly lists have probably added 110 games to my wishlist lol. Less an intelligence issue more a maturity issue imo.

Yup. People give Trump too much credit. He’s there as a big distraction most of the time and has no history of forming his own thoughts especially the past few years. He literally parrots the last person who spoke to him (or what he saw on TV) and made him feel good, hence his inability to stick to any side or story. Trump is simple to define as are his motives. Look at those around him and those that allowed and encouraged the current situation if you really want to see some truly dark people. Btw they love the focus on Trump as it lets them push their agenda with very little interference. Trump loves it too because he’s still starved for any attention he can get because daddy didn’t give him any as a child.

I definitely had the opposite feeling the past few years. Started out on PC as a kid and then ended up focused moreso on consoles for the rest of my childhood and teenage years. After being focused on consoles for so long PC felt weird, overly complicated, harder to share with friends, etc. But the past 5 years has been amazing in giving a chance to smaller indies, controller support becoming mainstream, no longer requiring a super rig to experience most games in a decent way, things like steam big picture mode and various streaming options allowing for the typical way PC was played to be disrupted. PC games themselves have also come a long way in just being closer to console counterparts in the ability to just launch and play without fiddling with options while still making options available for those who choose to. I still play on consoles as well but the diverse content and improvements in accessibility and approachability have been great.

Valve should really call this out in the store UI in a more visible fashion like how other storefronts give an area to denote what drm a key is they are selling. Be interesting to know the percentage of games that are drm free on steam. But I would never expect most users to realize it’s even a thing but that’s due too poor UI/UX than anything else.

Do note there is a lot of negativity on the razer subreddit but also quite a few helpful people with checklists in how to get the most out of the blade. Razer support is active there as well. The laptop is expensive but the only thing I found to be VR ready and not look overly “gamer” with a decent screen (4K and 1080p 144hz options), at a decent size. Once a year they flew out the biggest spenders to spend a day at the studio. One year the demographic was an older war veteran (in his 50s or 60s) , he was disabled and just really enjoyed playing. He looked so enthused to be visiting and had lots of ideas on the game. A Middle Aged woman. Nothing remarkable about her. She had a career and family. And the third person couldn’t show up. I was just providing clarity on what many including myself wondered about. I had always heard many considered Forza 4 to be peak for the series especially with how many gameplay features were handled. What I learned was it kind of made sense as T10 leaned in and made a great partnership with PG to ensure Horizon could take off and allowing PG to work to their strengths. Over time both studios have learned from each other and shared when it made sense. I was pretty amazed myself to see the support provided by T10 but MS is known for this as a publisher. At the same time it was easy to see that FM didn’t have as long of a dev cycle as it appears because of split resourcing. T10 is also such a reliable studio for shipping good products that they are often looked to for providing hardware launch experiences and paving the way for things like PC support. These things are part of what makes the studio so special but also has potentially taken some focus off pushing FM a bit. So the FM team getting time to learn and improve their product is a much needed break and will allow the franchise room to grow. While PG also can now grow not just with Horizon but into other things as well. It’s good news all around.

PG does not loan multiple engineers and artists to T10 the way T10 has done with PG. PG does not contribute Art direction, and production support the way T10 has with Horizon. PG does not optimize Motorsport the way T10 helps optimize Horizon. The acquisition is good as it should free up T10 resources who have assisted on the publishing side and allow PG more freedom to fully own direction and ramp up on technical gaps T10 has helped fill over the years. It’s more (i) and (ii) with new leadership thus new business goals. Most people who worked on Windows 7 are no longer at the company. If they are they were promoted into leadership roles or most likely moved to other divisions. Same with Xbox 360 vs Xbox 1. If you were around in the Windows 7 days and you were not dumb with your financial situation you can probably semi retire by now or choose to work on what you want. That’s just the nature of big business especially corporate America. Nothing will ever stay the same because there is constant pressure to continue to drive up profits and for new leadership to have business impact and leave their mark. Due to the churn maintenance on code bases especially is very challenging. You’re dealing with code that has been around since day 1 and the people who originally wrote it are long gone. Even Forza Motorsport is a 10 year old codebase and despite the team wanting to make changes risk mitigation has to be taken into account. Management wants changes now not after you refactor things which adds up technical debt over time but they don’t care as they won’t be around to deal with the codebase 10 years from now.

Yup violates NDA, many games don’t get finished and rarely do you see anyone leaking the ending, etc without permission. Companies tend to be more laid back if you are sharing certain aspects to get another job but I have seen companies send cease and desist warnings to people in regards to public portfolio content in the past. It’s a big reason why many have password protected sites or docs for job hunting. It’s also not a good look for future employment if you are seen as someone who shares without permission so most people just don’t bother and move on.

I’m running the game thru Steam as a non Steam application. It was important to launch steam (which was launching the Forza app ) as admin. So this does play into the permissions thing some have mentioned. Ensure you run the app as administrator. The other thing I did when the app began crashing was go into the app settings menu on windows and hit reset app. Forza then loaded up fine , recognized my gamertag and synced my previous game save. My settings in the app for the game were reset however as it asked me to benchmark again but my game save was fine. The other thing I will note is I have a local Windows account and only allow MS apps to be affiliated with my store account which is my Xbox live account.

Hmmmm...don’t see them putting their big first party stuff on steam. Right now it’s only things not developed fully in house and only after they have finished development. Forza has so many licensing issues they don’t even last on Microsoft’s platform. I also think they want to use these as hooks for their gamepass service like EA and origin. They just don’t have a plan around pc gaming because there literally is no high level stakeholder who cares enough. They also seem to not want to put games being designed as a service on steam, and first party development seems to be heading that way. Never say never of course because all it takes is a leadership shuffle and direction can change. But I think that’s where gamepass is nice. Essentially just renting the game for a few bucks and doesn’t require you be all in or anything. Horizon is great but I’m biased because I used to work at t10. No way I would miss out on it as just getting the big franchises to PC was a miracle in itself lol. Whether it has a wrapper or not the store issues would still be the same as the game organization does not control that. I’m mostly proud of the foundation work others and myself did at t10 just to get Forza in general playable on PC. Gaming doesn’t control the wrapper all we could do was file feature requests against that team. The real growth was internationally as many never would have played a Forza game requiring Xbox. Once that was noted we added more localization options for the game. I remember specifically doing these for China as they had completely different needs in order to launch. lol. I’m assuming you have never worked at a big corporation in the US. At that level it’s like game of thrones. Doesn’t matter how successful or not successful your initiative is. It’s all politics at that level. And just because someone is spearheading an initiative doesn’t mean they believe in it at that level either.

Everyone who works there is curious too. Still major reorganization going on and leadership shuffling. The same person was over windows phone and was promoted hence the strategy going wider. As I said before it’s easy to follow MS they have to legally tell the public about high profile departures. There is no windows org anymore the way there has been in the past. For people concerned about MS walling in gaming, everyone should know better. MS doesn’t care about gaming. If you fall for marketing as my buddy did recently ( oh so much growth, following week he was laid off from gaming) then you are wasting valuable time in your life. You need some level of dedication to actively destroy something and MS just isn’t that focused on gaming. Every time they do something with games outside the typical Xbox ecosystem it has nothing to do with growing gaming. The new direction is largely falling in line with leadership. Xbox has always had to fight to just stick around, rarely does the business get to make the right decision for itself sadly. Go read what some of the early Xbox founders had to say. So when people note things are not well thought out , well of course the new direction gets dumped on gaming with no additional resources, same timeline, same budget and it’s the same with store. The UWP team is extremely small as well and was never expanded given the expanded architectural needs to support huge games. Every internal team forced to make an “app” with that wrapper was understandingly frustrated. You can get away with opting out of initiatives when leadership churn is happening especially if you are part of a valued business unit driving profit for the organization.

My example was from FM6 actually. You will see it more In publicly traded companies who spend millions on their company brand and image. So a board like that is just like having legal, it’s a cost of doing business. Companies also realize if you don’t have diverse teams these issues tend to pop up so to compensate they try to form these type of boards. No one is perfect so things can slip thru the cracks but no one wants the appearance of not trying to build products with a sense of global and cultural awareness. I asked a buddy of mine how EA for example was always able to craft the soundtracks they do for sports and racing games and he said when he was there they had a board of diverse people to help craft and/or approve soundtracks. Oculus was also in progress of establishing a similar board for VR. Bringing in those from diverse backgrounds that don’t have representation at the company (of course lots of efforts to improve this as well are ongoing) to look at products. No company wants to release anything that comes off offensive especially if it appears your company was not aware enough to pick up on it. It’s not a good look. For smaller companies I bet there are smaller consulting firms who offer those services especially these days. I agree on a common sense consultancy lol.

I’m just not the type of person to run outside on a sunny day and yell at the sky to rain. I’m much more logic based and realize you can affect big corporations in a few ways. Posting on era is less likely to have impact. MS is most likely not counting on PC revenue from non Xbox users; it’s a bonus for them which is why the whole program has been designed as a extension for Xbox users. Over time they will see there is interest from PC only owners and will need to update their strategy and execute from the POV of that user. I hope that happens soon. Thread Telltale statement: Potential partners interested in finishing The Walking Dead’s final season
I was explaining this in another thread. Platform holders will lose out on their 30% cut , not shocking MS would be fine absorbing that hit over bad pr but I expect other platform holders have to decide how they want to categorize the loss as they won’t be recouping anything from Telltale most likely. Telltale having this messaging does complicate things as technically they have not fully breeched their obligation so other platforms are put in an odd spot of deciding how to categorize the loss and whether to pull licenses post refunds or wait until telltale actually misses a date.

So mad they didn’t port 3 , it’s so fun. I also have real sympathy for the new devs as I’ve been on a team like that before. You get handed a franchise with no support from the previous developer, new assets , new engine, tight deadlines and of course consumers have high expectations as they assume you will be building off the previous product. But it’s near impossible because that previous team has so much tribal knowledge and customized their game engine over the years to get things feeling good. *sigh* This is one of the first games that even Amazon pulled it was getting such terrible reviews. I was excited to support a Gundam game on PC but I’ll have to wait for a deep sale like you. Thanks for the write up!

It’s true. What’s sad is the really rich don’t pay for anything because of connections. I always found that ironic. But the people who need to be saving get tricked and are willing to give what little hard earned cash they have up so they can brag about having something a few days or hours early, willing to give multi billion dollar companies money up front interest free for content that’s not even developed yet. I told my friend the other day why let a corporation hold your money and earn interest on it while you get nothing until months later? I garuntee the really rich wouldn’t. They either work connections to get the product free or they would only pay for what was ready to be consumed by them. The rich get richer because their money literally earns more money for them. They don’t give up their cash nearly as easy as everyone else but the illusion that they do benefits them and helps widen the gap.

It’s just not how life or business works. Just like when someone is convicted of stealing money and ordered to repay , if they don’t have it victims never get repaid (see Madoff). Companies have even more protection because the laws are written to encourage business. Seen many companies shut down and not even pay out owed wages to employees let alone consumers. It’s up to you to weigh if a preorder incentive is worth it if the project isn’t finished and takes the funding company out with it. If you are counting on companies to protect you as a consumer before they protect themselves then you will be disappointed.

You can sue whoever you want if the business has no money after the court examines their bankruptcy, even if you win in court there is no money to pay you. You are thinking too literal, I’m just saying if the financials are true then Sony also won’t recoup the preorder money (minus their cut) they have passed on to telltale. They will be just another person or entity on the list of all the people Telltale owes. Once telltale is gone , it’s just going to be a loss for anyone still owed. An interesting note is I wonder what Sony and others actually say as far as refund , are they responsible for a developer misleading or changing scope? I expect bigger companies to refund because it’s good PR and won’t cost them much in comparison to potential bad PR. They just will most likely never be repaid by Telltale.

I don’t think you can worry about how companies will respond. If they do fail they won’t have resources to repay anyone anyway. What you can do is control your actions and stop pre purchasing content that has not been released. Consumers have real power to shape industry trends. Buy episodes as they come out and complain if companies don’t give you that option. If you are going to pay up front (which makes no sense to me as you are giving companies money they can hold and earn interest on while you get nothing ) then I would consider it more an investment and understand the risks behind any investment is you may not get what you expect fully in return.

Thread Why is the windows store such a piece of sh**?
read my posts then ’s post. You really think you are the target user? When developing things you have priorities usually tied to business strategy. The Windows store core user scenarios were never built around core gamers. I get your issues around regional prices and being PC only , and that user scenario is probably at the bottom of the list. Gaming has always been console first, US first at Microsoft. I’m not saying that’s great but that’s why all advertising around PC is centered on play anywhere. There is no pc gaming advocate at the company and when dealing with big companies you need that in order to help change the way a company communicates and supports certain initiatives. Not saying this won’t change just saying given the past I’m not holding my breath. Instead of complaining on forums , complain to the people who own the decisions and are setting priorities. Your user scenario is valid so tweet Phil. The Windows store just had a sale and I don’t think it required gold for the discounts but I may be mistaken and I’m not sure if it was cross region.

Yes! I don’t think people realize that architecture changes completely if developers had known this up front lol. I remember the first time we realized this was an issue on Forza. Updated would redownload the entire app. Fine for what the store was initially made for , very bad for the gigs that made up even a paired down Forza Apex game. We had to then file an issue with the store org and wait as we don’t set their priorities and they were working toward different milestones related to Windows releases not gaming ones.

Thread Why is the windows store such a piece of sh**?
MS is pretty predictable because it’s a public company. I think people say BUILD because what was formerly the Windows org usually has deadlines related to BUILD similar to how gaming has deadlines related to E3. It’s just a wishful guess. You can also point to quarters with MS. Lots of projects have quarterly goals and roll out plans to coincide with financial reporting. A lot of the initiative around Windows Store and UWP was spearheaded by a leader who is no longer at the company. However what’s frustrating for most gamers is understanding MS is way more than gaming and it’s not the company’s first priority. MS is like a huge battleship so when leadership changes combined with things Satya is pushing, it’s like waiting for a huge battleship to turn around. It will most definitely take time. The store organization is not just over the app you see on windows they are over much much more , the app itself is like 5% of what they are responsible for. Restructuring happens to realign with new priorities which usually comes when new leadership changes. Obviously MS has data and they can see the performance of the store, unfortunately I have a feeling a game like horizon will show positive trends for store usage and issues some are experiencing will be low pri until it affects a much larger group. PC gamers in particular are often great at problem solving which skews problems a bit. Developers tend to know about the issues but they don’t own the decision on what to fix when.

Thread Why is the windows store such a piece of sh**?
Exactly. The store was built from the ground up to support apps not huge game files. Both the store and Xbox studios were told of the new initiative from leadership and did their best to comply without getting any extra time. It’s much more a management issue then blaming developers on either side. MS is huge and still is restructuring around Satya’s new goals which means progress that would be visible to users will take time. In the meantime developers in both organizations are doing what they can to deliver what’s needed for most use cases.

Thread I love this trend of retro micro console
I’m not sure why people think this is related to console BC efforts. It’s absolutely not from a business perspective. It’s targeting a different audience and going thru different pipelines for licensing agreements and manufacturing. BC has been a challenge because of having to update licensing agreements, and handling the technical implementation, and business plan around that. It’s much easier to do a one off mini console to target those not interested in the core console space while keeping your brand in the news and licensing for this type of stuff has been done before so there is nothing to figure out. BC is about future proofing access and compatibility across future generations and form factors with potentially no end date. These type of deals are new and bizdev is still wrapping their heads around that stuff. It’s a big reason why Xbox has to trickle out games even if they have most of the technical side figured out. The subscription models also add a new wrinkle and new contracts need to be written up for that as well. MS can be super disruptive with BC because they have the engineering talent and budget , which btw starts out in the red since they are not requiring content owners do anything. That business approach won’t work for every platform because everyone has a different strategy and financial restraints and goals.

If your company already has installs locked down , as others mentioned I would stick to mobile. No doubt they are monitoring browsers and internet usage. I used to bring in a iPad mini at a job where I had downtime, waiting for builds, etc. I wouldn’t use company resources for gaming during your work hours especially since most of the web games should run on your phone these days. Nowadays I pop in and out of turn based mobile games when I have downtime in between meetings that isn’t long enough to get anything substantial started or finished. You should be careful on work PCs even just browsing, I’ve seen people end up getting their work pc infected with malware that had porn continuing to pop up. Embarrassingly they had to have IT wipe everything. Also been at a place that had to send an email out about torrenting. HBO had sent a cease and desist because the work internet was being used to download shows. Now management never said who and obviously no one would do it purposely so we all assumed someone brought in a personal laptop, connected to the WiFi and forgot they had torrents in progress so they just continued in the background using company internet lol.

Halo Wars was not internally developed. Right now if it was developed by a 3rd party , it may show up on steam however only after they are done adding features and content. If it’s developed by a internal team it’s unlikely to show up on steam under the current strategy. With State of decay 2, contracts were done before the developer was bought out so I would expect it will appear on steam after major updates are done. Even if MS helps with development, look at the developer named and if they are not wholly owned by MS there is a chance it appears on steam.

50 is still young these days. I know quite a few people who are in their 50s still working full time in gaming, usually in production roles. It’s tough to retire that early in the US especially in gaming. From my experience older people tend to leave for a variety of reasons including financial cushion, other income streams kicking in and overall living stability, not agreeing with overall direction, bored and ready for something new, family stage (ie kids off to college, need to move to support older family) etc. so you can only really speculate and watch what they do. It’s standard for everyone to say they have no plans as well. The industry can be very immature about people choosing to move on. Most people when they send out their farewell emails will say they are taking a break, spending time with family, friends, etc. A few months later you will find out they are in fact working on something or employed elsewhere. Say the wrong thing at tech or gaming companies when you give notice and you can be escorted out by security that day. Most would rather avoid the potential drama.

Both franchises get to leverage various things from each other , both systems and architecture wise although they often choose to implement things differently. You do realize that for many launchers it is not their intention to be like steam right? They are neither staffed nor planned to be that, at least not initially. The Windows store was never built with steam in mind it was built to mimic app stores like iOS and Android. Some launchers are literally just that by design. They are simply cleaner ways to push updates and inform users of news associated with products compared to just an executable. I think a lot of companies assume an interface no matter how basic is expected these days when distributing content , especially service driven content.

This right here is what every content owner knows. At the end of the day content rules. Platform features are nice to have but most are there for the content. It’s always been that way. They know they can capture most people with one game. That’s all they need. Universal apps like discord make the need for social integration less important. Basically people will sacrifice to experience what they perceive as good content. I remember downloading the Epic launcher years ago to try the beta of the latest Unreal Tournament and that thing was barely an application lol. I’m not sure how improved it is now but I’m sure it’s nowhere near as feature rich as other PC launchers. Yet Fortnite is huge. From a development standpoint it can be tricky. No one is going green light ramping up a team to add features to a platform or launcher with limited users.

I like seeing your posts in my feed. It’s like my backlog is auto playing itself. Since you do like writing my only feedback would be when reviewing older games take time to consider the time they were released and how that particular time in the industry may have influenced certain decisions that do or don’t hold up today. This. Especially being in development, I really connect with how much people invest in these products big and small. I’ve always been that way though. You never know where you will find a cool little mechanic or interface solution. This is so true. Sometimes I know going in I’m not going to finish even if I enjoy it. I just don’t have the time and would rather check out other things once I understand the gameplay loop. I would like to borrow your time machine please. I tried to hyper focus like that a few times across consoles and it never lasted long so I respect your discipline.

Thread Fallout 76: Bethesda confirms to PC Gamer that it will not be on Steam
I get it, just saying most people don’t care. The US especially is a huge consumer based culture. Just like many consume from more than one streaming content ecosystem as they too have expanded as content owners realize they can have their own. If you want to play that game or watch a certain series a new launcher or service app won’t stop the majority and it’s a lot easier than having to get a new console for instance. People who lock themselves into one ecosystem and people who refuse to engage with one no matter what are edge cases. I have friends who refuse to use steam for whatever reason, Valve is not worried about them.

I know a lot of people say that online but I find it hard to believe that many only buy and play on steam in the general gaming audience these days. Most people who play games are in multiple ecosystems including mobile, and console. Even PC only gamers rarely only play thru one ecosystem. These publishers aren’t trying to convince the few hardcore steam enthusiasts, they want to grab the majority who will generally go where content that interests them goes.

Some of the biggest games on PC are not on steam and they do fine. I do think it’s easier for the majority with things like discord connecting all platforms. My friends spend about equal time across 2-3 major clients. I swear at times despite our steam libraries we use steam as more a status and chat client while playing in other ecosystems lol. I’ve largely ignored Origin but with EA pushing new services and the return of Madden I welcome additional options and innovative services. As long as I can easily launch thru steam it doesn’t bother me nearly as much as say having to do work arounds for MS store apps.

Thread Study: Barely missing out in a math competition leads to girls quitting at twice the rate of boys
This. It starts from an early age. Boys are encouraged to be competitive and thus believe in themselves no matter the outcome. Sports is also a huge factor, look how competitive young boys sports teams are, and how at a young age they are coached to push on after a loss. The best athletes are the ones who can recover quickly from a missed shot , catch, throw, or lost game. Many young boys are constantly being coached this way during key development times.

Thread Has anyone recently moved to PC gaming after years of being console-only?
Been slowly making the move back to PC (played on PC as a kid, before I was ever introduced to consoles) , over the past few years. I still own every console and often play on them but only because I have not invested in a dedicated gaming rig as the idea of a tower was just not appealing to me. Now that laptops are getting thinner, and less "gamerified", its helping accelerate the process. Being mobile is a must for me, I don't see myself setting up a traditional gaming rig for a few years yet. I'm also not someone who needs to play with settings maxed, etc. Medium , 1080p with a stable framerate is fine for me. Also with big publishers releasing their games on PC, huge indie market, and mobile devs releasing newly balanced games on PC, there is so much variety. Consoles will be for exclusives only, or games friends who prefer console want to play together in.

I really like the first game in the trilogy but I was not a huge final fantasy fan. As others noted it was different. I appreciated it was more action based and linear which made it easier and more accessible for someone who normally didn’t play a lot games like final fantasy. Most of the issues the core final fantasy fans had were pluses for me or irrelevant because I hadn’t really played earlier versions for long. I don’t think it was what any traditional final fantasy fan was expecting at that time. The only other final fantasy game I’ve spent time with and enjoyed in a similar way was final fantasy xv. Seemed like a purposeful effort to try to make the franchise more accessible without alienating their core which didn’t quite work out.

Actually at least in the Seattle area. (east side , Redmond,Kirkland), I’ve been shocked how often people do tell me to go ahead. They usually ask if that’s all I have and then say well you go ahead. Shocks me every time but happens at least 50% of the time I’m in that situation. oh nice a whole dedicated team. post should be updated to say UI//UX team ha ha. (kidding) That is always nice to see. Too often in the industry companies don't understand the different roles. Its great to see proper teams focused around UI and UX being built with people who are specialized and actually care about that part of the game. It really shows up in the final product. To echo what was mentioned above , definitely sounds like Killzone, which also explains the online requirement, and full on UI team. MP shooters, require lots of UI work and iteration compared to single player offline experiences. I think this would be a second team they are ramping up. While horizon would have a dedicated team. Both teams will leverage central tech for sure.

Thread I’m a WNBA player. Men won’t stop challenging me to play one-on-one (WaPo)
When I look back a few reasons, 1. Around highschool was when it started to get more serious. You really needed to have a strong support system of family or friends who would take you to all the camps, travel with you to tournaments, etc. Sadly my mom died when I was 12, so my dad was a single parent of two, working two full time jobs to keep our lifestyle unchanged (and I assume keep from thinking about losing my mom). So I just didn't have that support. 2. There was far more demand on your free time to play in highschool. My freshman year, the coach for the senior level girls team saw me (usually freshman and sophomores played on the JV teams, while upperclass men played on the more serious team) , she wanted me to practice with her team and wanted me to play a year ahead on her team. She was pretty intense. Turns out she was related to Bobby Knight. Don't remember how but obviously she took coaching very seriously and was coaching no different than a serious male team would be coached. (which was pretty rare back then except super exclusive schools). Either way practices were before, and after school, you had to travel to games, all on top of normal school stuff. Since previous teams I had played on had never been that structured, it just felt not fun to me. I was good but realized for me it was just fun. Plus I had other interests around that time , mostly pivoted toward tech and engineering. 3.Injuries. Holy shit, since many girls were not playing sports as early as boys and had developed to be bigger and taller faster than boys, many did not know their strength and were awkward. By my sophomore year I already had ankle, and knee injuries. It was often a much more physical game playing with girls compared to guys who had been playing for much longer. All my injuries were from playing with girls not guys. 4, Discpline I was, and still am to some extent a rebel. I am also highly competitive. I still remember in a grade school game, waving my coach to shut up while he was yelling something from the sideline. He then proceeded to pull me out. Really pissed me off. Of course once we started losing he put me back in lol. I was also the player to stare down refs. I really relished playing the heel (yup also an old school wrestling fan) , I was good so would get booed in away games anytime I scored. Opposing coaches would always come up to me after games to note something. With my home situation, I just don't think anyone could "coach" me at that time without extensive effort. Regrets? Yup. I wish I would have had the structure or adults in my life at that time to keep me playing at least thru college. As you get thru highschool, many are "good" so the difference is the people who have the structure around them to develop their natural talent and abilities to compete on that next level both physically and mentally. Would have at least not had student loans lol.

Thread I’m a WNBA player. Men won’t stop challenging me to play one-on-one (WaPo)
Interesting article. Brings back memories for me. I grew up in Chicago during the Jordan era when I believe it was illegal to not play basketball. As a girl who played (ironically, most of my male friends didn’t ) , I mostly played against other guys as not many girls were playing yet at least casually at neighborhood courts. I was a pretty promising player up to high school when I quit. At 14 I was only person to score on a WNBA visiting player one on one at a basketball camp I attended. I could handle my father one on one, and could hold my own against most guys my age. When a guy would challenge me it was rarely a challenge as most guys who challenge in that way (because you are a girl ) are insecure and not that good themselves. Most could not handle “real” defense so it was easy for me to strip the ball or disrupt their shot (which was probably not great either). I was also just extremely good with handling the ball (Allen iverson being one of my fav players, and consuming and 1 mixtapes) , I was actually known for breaking people’s ankles as we called it back then. I didn’t have to be stronger or faster , I understood how to identify the side they were weak on defending, and how to use a bit of psychology in trash talk before I had my way with them. I found out after I quit playing I had a counsin who was playing in the NBA, and my father briefly played when he was younger so a lot of my athletic gifts were just that only I combined it with a cerebral mindset. I also had elite male friends who went on to play professionally overseas. I noticed they would never make these type of challenges even in early years. They also would never groan when playing with a girl. Elite athletes don’t need to play one on one to prove anything they are only looking to improve themselves so the battle is with themselves. Usually when playing one on one with those who’s skill and just overall build was different or greater than mine it would be more about us helping each other with a particular challenge we were having with our own game. I do have fond memories of playing against other neighborhoods. The look on the face of some guys when my friends showed up with me was priceless, and once we destroyed them , the feeling was priceless.

Karma. It just manifests in ways we don’t necessarily expect. Tough things happen in life to teach you lessons. Ah you should add that South Carolina part to your first post OP. I could see if you haven’t spent time in other parts of the US that being quite jarring as you described. Growing up in Chicago and spending the past 10 years in the Seattle area I always felt Canada was more American than I expected it to be given it’s another country. Definitely noticed more similarities than differences. As far as the south , I have family there but only visited as a kid. I also noticed the weight difference but also attributed it to the lifestyle. Not so much processed food but so much home cooking (at least in my family back then ). Even breakfast was a feast compared to when I was back home grabbing a bowl of cereal lol.

Depends on your role but I know many who crunch at T10 and work weekends when needed. Bad UI with no options to turn it off. Timers added for no reason that have fail states. I don’t mind having them for those who want the challenge but they should be optional. Artificial difficulty, meaning things are just scaled against the player vs actual skill required in being better at mechanics the game offers during gameplay. Poor save systems. Thread Kotaku: GW2 writers fired after Twitter argument. GG pressured firing.
It’s just one reason I steer clear of social media. When I saw this story break I was kind of shocked as I have crossed paths with Jessica before years ago. It’s a small industry. For people who think her reaction was odd , as a minority woman who has been in gaming as long as Jessica it really is true; I have to always be ready to defend my position much more than my male colleagues despite my experience and accolades. I only mention this because if that has happened to you over the years you can be somewhat mentally stuck and if you’re not careful every piece of “feedback” can feel like yet another attack no matter how nicely it’s worded. In fact the “nicer” it appears can be even more triggering. It’s tiring to stay quiet , most of us have for YEARS. I assume she has gotten more outspoken over the years. It’s important to recognize this within yourself , it’s how bias is grown within justified or not it filters all your interactions. That might mean pausing a few days before replying or apologizing if you misinterpret someone which happens a lot on social media and within the workplace. It also might mean recognizing you are not in a place for meaningful back and forth and ignoring comments. Twitter probably isn’t the best medium for what she was sharing given her past interactions on the platform where it seemed she felt under attack. That too can affect how one reacts. I think as a developer working for someone else you have to decide to either engage with customers and non customers or not. Either way you are representing the company. MMO fans especially have always had strong opinions on the game. Most developers are the opposite of PR and don’t have others running their social media accounts to provide screened replies. Developers tend to be very emotionally charged when speaking about their work. Her response wasn’t the best but I’ve had harsher ones I’ve said in person lol. I think the bigger issue is whether her interactions broke policy at Arenanet or was the “uprising” which included many non Arenanet fans enough pressure for Arenanet to terminate two long time employees. As others have said I tend to believe this was an opportunity Arenanet used to do something they always wanted to do anyway but lacked cause. Even though Washington is an at will state, companies tend to be very careful when getting rid of employees. Can you imagine Steve Jobs on Twitter and his reactions to “designers” giving him feedback on product launches? I wish he was around today because the meltdowns would be amazing.

I totally agree with this, even my youngest brother noticed the same thing about the friends set. I think they would be much more popular not forcing that color pallete on everything. Its fine to use when it makes sense but it seems very forced on some of their better builds. I think the very same thing. Luckily I am still focused on getting a few sets I missed so not really ready for custom MOC work yet. I look at the mall Jang built and I would love to know how much that cost as well. When I went to brickcon this year in Seattle, saw lots of amazing layouts with custom everything which no doubt had to be pricey. I'm sure many people build over time which helps break up the costs but still. Awesome work! This set is definitely an example of a set they dont need to force that color palette on to be successful imo.

Took each lego set , threw the bags and instructions faces toward the front in ziplock bags. I was shocked I even go the Ultimate Spiderman Web Bridge in one (2.5 gallon). I then took those bags and put them in storage containers. I ended up with one container full of speed champions, the others mostly city and some super hero. I think I easily broke down around 40 sets. I still have quite a few bigger sets I can break down to save room. How does everyone else manage storing sets they haven't built yet or sets they break down after building?

Just starting to build my lego city out. Starting out building out the neighborhood. Built one of the retired Lego Homes I got from this year's Brickcon: I then realized that the recent creator sets really require you to buy more than one and somewhat create your own modulars. I understand why Lego did this, so try to keep the creator series more affordable and save details for the bigger modulars. Boy it really complicates when trying to build a city. I also am not a big fan of the cars in the older creator sets. I love speed champions but those are of a completely different scale. My city may just have big cars lol. I think my first custom modular will be Corner Deli, I grabbed 4 of those sets on sale. *my wallet is sad* I also really want to get the rest of the older creator houses , so I guess I will hit up bricklink. The next one I want is The Apple Tree House Also realized I need road tiles, and more green tiles since the newer creator sets stopped using the full size tiles Which I guess also goes to them keeping prices down. I will definitely share pics once I have more than one thing built lol. Just getting a table for this took me months. Walmart is pretty good about price matching Amazon sales.

My Black Friday purchases are starting to roll in. Really happy to finally have the Kwik E Mart but I will have to re purpose it a bit to fit into my planned city. Also made the big step of finally getting a table to build my city on. Ive been talking about building out a lego city for months as I picked up random sets but never had a table or anywhere to build it. Probably wont have time to really start until holiday break but thats ok, one step at a time.

I'm not big into star wars but I do follow what resellers think on various sets to help decide how to prioritize when to get sets without going completely broke. This Hoth set just doesn't seem to be a "good" one for those who actually like the theme. It will also most likely see another price drop, so no harm waiting imo. I know resellers picked up a few of these but only in modest quantities, they don't seem to be concerned about availability of the set and seem to think it will get cheaper before it "retires".

Finally got orders thru on LEGO SAH US. The site seems to be working ok now. Got an order at Rakuten as well. hard to resist discounted sets with their stacked 20% off promo. Very happy with my haul , probably won’t be as happy once I see my new account balance lol.

Sadly I saw all over the internet lego "fans" missing the point when it came to the women of NASA set. It just reminded me of the people not getting black lives matter and screaming all lives matter. On the bright side it was the number one seller in the toys section on amazon and was showing as back ordered on the US lego shop upon release. Also saw lots of men buying the set for their technical wives and/or daughters. As a double minority working in tech I will be grabbing a few of these sets. i totally agree , we need these sets because if we didn't there would be no ranting , it would be treated like any other set. Disappointing to hear about Jang but not shocking as I encounter Jangs all the time in my career. They seem nice , competent then one day they slip and let their true feelings come out.

I really have no interest in Ninjago as a ip but they made some really amazing sets that can't be ignored. I want like 2 of 70607 , such a neat little set to repurpose in my future lego city. I keep trying to convince myself I don't need ninjago city lol.

So what is everyone currently building and/or hoarding? For me Building: Ultimate Batmobile I got for my birthday back in August. I love vehicles so could not resist multiple vehicle builds combining into one. It's a fun build so far but I've been so busy it's taking me a long time to build. Hoarding: old school lego system, town, racer sets. Recently got some mini shell racers and One of the old school spyder Porsche racers.

After taking a pretty long break from VR on all platforms (about 3 months) just due to not having free time and nothing really jumping out at me, I was waiting for this patch for what seems like forever. It does not disappoint. As others have said they pulled off quite a feat here. I am super impressed with their default comfort options, as well. This is coming from someone who spent almost a year working consulting with Oculus VR on a few projects. So I have a deep understanding into the many issues around comfort, and accessibility the industry as a whole is facing and actively trying to solve. As a huge wipeout fan, its amazing how natural the game feels in VR. Almost as if it was meant to be in VR all along.

Yup this is a bug for sure. I've had it happen every few games on PS4. I bet some people are thinking "wow this game is dead cant find anyone" but really its just dumping people in empty lobbies that wont ever populate. Quitting out to the main menu, and hopping back in fixes it albeit annoying especially when in a group.

Well its either a bug that didn't get fixed or prioritized for the build (yes sometimes as a developer you have local fixes ready to go and you are not allowed to check into the main build for various reasons) or it was done on purpose to see its effects on player progression. Its that simple imo. Hope they fix this as it would help immensely on many fronts.

I know many have wondered why DICE hasn’t pushed a progression patch. The patches for bugs you see are usually done before ship and were deemed not important enough to risk missing the ship date. Given the attention the progression issues have gotten and how deep it’s integrated into the game , there is no doubt multiple solutions being talked about and evaluated from a development feasibility POV to a legal one. My guess is they need approvals from executives at EA, Lucas and Disney and other stakeholders who are OOF due to Thanksgiving. Even if they as developers know what they want to do they have to jump through internal hoops and at this point there are many who want to be looped in and have opinions as well. Not giving an excuse just sharing from my own experience shipping a Star Wars game.

Having a blast thus far. Bought it to support my fellow artists in the industry and boy did they deliver. I don't like Star Wars other than Vader (I have a thing for villains) , so I have no real loyalty to the brand. I just loved the first one so much for being a much more light- hearted BF type game. I cant believe there is no galactic assault in arcade mode, if any mode belongs there its that. Hope they add it soon. I dont have any cards equipped so when I do get kills , I hope the other person feels bad they got killed by someone with NO cards equipped lol.

Oh I bet. My younger brother has one and it was one of the reasons I loved my vita, especially remote play from my PS4 when out and about. I even demonstrated this to execs at Xbox and asked why I couldn’t play my Xbox library on the go yet lol. Now it’s mostly my laptop, since that doesn’t hog the tv screen when others want to watch and I can stream Xbox games (ones without native pc support) to it which works great for casual play while watching things on Tv with others.

That was going to be our team’s focus. Internally at big companies it works pretty similar to if you were pitching a publisher from the outside. Lots of brainstorming, concepting, prototypes, alignment with broader business and portfolio goals , then narrow in on something the team would be excited about making.

Sort of. At times the business requires something and they look around and go why not that team? Some leaders are able to talk their resources out of it, other leaders can't as they have nothing else for their teams to do. Some leaders see it as an opportunity to further themselves by agreeing to do what noone else is willing to do at the company at the expense of those under them. At a certain point you may have lots of people under you, budgets get cut, so its either shift your resources or they get laid off. That is a big challenge at a company like MS where gaming is not the core focus of the company. The other thing is people have careers just like any other medium. Kinect was interesting but moreso for people who were devs, and UI/UX. If you were an artist or a game designer those type of games just don't translate well when it comes to your portfolio and experience. Kinect games were driven by tech, so while your other industry cohorts are working on new high fidelity art for next gen you are doing KA. Just doesn't add up. Now some people didn't really care, as they were somewhat done with their careers (gaming, film), and were fine with trying something new. I worked with Daniel. Super smart guy. He left MS before the kinect train began. He was part of the 1vs100 team only he was working on another game that was in production at the same time. It was pretty cool, but was never released. Daniel was very adamant that MS was going the wrong way by always focusing on marketing the same type of games like Halo/Gears. Not everyone is into to shooting up things and he really believed in making games that were different. The 1vs100 team was also a really special team, full of people willing to take a different view on what gaming could be.

No as I mentioned before they sold people on one thing but the business pushed it in a different direction. This happens all the time especially at bigger companies. It was a huge hit on morale which is why most gaming focused people left the group as soon as they could once it was clear things were not headed in a direction they expected career wise.

GS alum here. GS worked on many Kinect related initiatives including Kinect Adventures, Kinect Funlabs, etc. We were an incredibly talented team full of carefully recruited industry veterans (people from god of war, mass effect , films like spiderman, etc) The initial plan was we were to just help the Kinect initiative and thus we shipped KA. We were then supposed to move to a new ip on the next Xbox (which would become Xbox1) Instead we worked on additional Kinect content, then had to help our publishing side with Kinect Star Wars. Then GS was broken up into multiple project teams. We focused on interactive tv initiatives then hololens. As the project teams grew they were simply branded. Not full blown studios the way Good Science initially was. As hololens became the focus , gaming subsided and many game focused people left. The branded project teams mostly were prototype teams. Eventually the entire group (NEXT) was moved out of the Xbox organization into Windows. As of today the entire group has been disbanded and work moved to other teams per reorganization announcements you can find online.

Have quite a few friends in this position right now. Stay motivated and keep finding ways to advance yourself outside of work and know the right opportunity will come. Sending you positive vibes and I hope you land that job. That reminds me of post my college graduation when the economy crashed. So frustrating to have to go back home and have family wondering wtf your issue is despite applying like crazy for close to a year. I made it and so will you. Just the fact you feel depressed means you know you can do more and be successful, you just need the right opportunity. The real sad part is when people accept their situations and don’t feel any discomfort and stop trying all together.

In my defense I do plan on purchasing a new gaming laptop in the next few weeks, so holding off on playing PC games that have higher requirements than my beloved card games. Gundam Breaker 3 is really tons of fun, I hope they have time to fix the issues with 4. I was really excited the series was finally getting a PC release. Too bad they didn't just port 3 with all DLCs and take more time to polish off 4.

I see this a lot. You are not abusing free trials. When you sign up you give your data away and companies like Amazon begin tracking your every move within their ecosystem. This is valuable to them. Not to mention that many who sign up for these trials won’t remember to cancel them or will decide the benefits are worth their while which is a conversion metric they can track. Free trials drive business otherwise companies like Amazon would have scrapped them ages ago. The old adage is true nothing is free , especially when dealing with businesses. I remember when many had similar sentiments regarding Netflix trials. Netflix is doing just fine and still offers trials. Others are right that Prime is pretty big in the US. It’s a great set of games they are giving away especially if they are drm free once you download them from the client. Not everyone cares about achievements, etc in comparison to being able to play a few games for “free”. I assume no steam keys for now because their client goal is set up to focus around and stream to twitch and in the future they want a more gamer centric storefront streamers can push sales thru. Interesting to watch but I don’t see why anyone would be confused in others showing interest. As long as developers are being compensated for their content, options are a good thing.
