Thread Question for Devs/Pubs: Why are you pulling games from GeForce Now?
Our games aren’t on geforce now (not a lot of demand for VR football games or otome I guess lol) but they’d be welcome to them. This is really just remote VM for people who’ve already paid for the games as far as I can see. As long as the quality of experience isn’t compromised in any significant way, I’d have no problem with it.

Thread PlayStation cancels planned PAX East appearence due to increasing concerns related to Coronavirus [SEE STAFF POST]
Ironically, the biggest concern is influenza-A , NOT COVID. Flu A has started running rampant due to poor strain targeting with this years vaccines. what’s doubly ironic is, the extra steps PAX will be taking to curb spread of coronavirus due to public fear (additional signage, sanitizing stations, gloves / masks etc.) will likely benefit prevention of influenza spread, making the show floor potentially safer than it would have been otherwise.

Thread Non-VR/Flat Mode should be added as an accessibility option in VR games.
Holy shit this discussion I mean. Wow. I think, given the costs already associated with development of any game, the expectation for creating entirely separate versions of the same title with completely different interactivity and play mechanics is a pipe dream, best. Appreciate also that VR dev is more difficult and more uncertain an investment for the studio involved. it doesn’t mean what you do has to be at the expense of inclusivity. Making VR experiences playable regardless of position (supine, seated, standing, room scale) adapting multiple control schemes and including visibility options for those with color-blindness and yes, movement options to minimize motion sickness for sensitive players like the OP are reasonable expectations for VR devs. VR is still a frontier and best practices are still relatively in their infancy. There may still yet be hope for folks like the OP to find a way to enjoy these games without getting dizzy. Demanding that we create a ‘flat’ version of every game, really, is not.

Thread WHOEVER it is that keeps saying "Oh, we should put chromatic aberration in this game!" Needs to reconsider
How about this: no effect should be overused. Careful thought and planning should be at the core of any visual composition. If CA is a tool the developers want to use to achieve the look they want to achieve, it sits in the toolbox right alongside bloom, lens flares, motion blur, etc: all elements which, when used effectively can help them achieve their aesthetic, and when overdone detracts from the comfort and effectiveness of the final image. Still, It’s ironic that the OP has chosen to make their point using a blast of hyperbolic vitriol, as that’s roughly the conversational equivalent of overdone chromatic aberration roasting your eyes. Chill?...this, however, could make for a far more interesting discussion. Proceed?

Thread VR my ass. Meet the 3D holographic display!
Funny to see this thread pop up. We’ve done a great deal of work in this area, and last summer helped Oddworld develop some cool Hologram pieces for their Pre-E3 presser. This was the first prototype that I whipped up just for fun: in addition to motion controls, we interfaced a camera with one of the displays, which actually transmitted the viewer’s face onto the screen in the hologram: In fact, to test the interactivity further, I even ported one of our early VR titles to the display over a weekend. The tech is interesting and certainly in its infancy. But with further iteration it will become much more common. It’s nowhere near ready to compete with anything, as the resolution is somewhat limited because you’re rendering a mosaic of high resolution elements that has to be stitched together within a prism, so GPU wise it’s far, far more demanding than VR and has limits in terms of viewing angle and frame rate.

Thread IGN deserves credit for covering PC VR games
Laudable to a degree, but sadly not enough in the grand scheme of things. Especially from an indie perspective. VR games are indeed still a niche, but the barrier to entry is much lower than it was 5 years ago. it will take things like better exposure via major outlets for it to overcome this, and the willingness to cover smaller experiences (not sticking to “AAA” scale releases) and sadly while IGN covering those major releases is a nice step, there is still a long way to go.

Thread Withdrawal from hospital IV drips?
You won’t get addicted to fentanyl during a hospital stay, even if It’s used for sedation while patients are intubated (which is fairly common. Propofol also has narcotic properties). True chemical dependency depends on both the potency of the drug, how it is used (IE, being rapidly pushed) and the time course, usually high frequency of use over a very long period of time, in order for the physiology to change and adapt to the drug’s presence. If the patient is going to hospice, In the goal of care is comfort, lower potency narcotics are commonly use (such as Roxanol) for pain control and air hunger in the case of progressive respiratory failure. Not everybody requires this, however. hospice care is driven by the patient’s needs for comfort: if the patient is pain-free, there’s no need to use pain medication.

Good article. I would say, for us, marketing has been by far the most frustrating element of the development struggle, because whereas we are able to chip away at our games until they provide an ideal experience, getting them into the channel has been incredibly difficult and out of our control. We just released on 3 platforms (PS4, Switch and PC) and despite dozens of emails, tons of media codes, and going so far as to hire a professional to reach out To individual editors and help with PR, we’ve been unable to get any major sites (Kotaku, IGN) to give us any coverage or even a response...we realize people are busy, but it’s incredibly disheartening the small-to-nonexistent coverage your efforts will reap, whereas somebody puts a bunny in Destiny 2 and it get a 2 page article.

Sometimes, especially in EU, there are actually consumer protections that studios can potentially run afoul of if something is offered for free or for sale if it’s originally set up as a preorder incentive (because you must provide something then and their to fulfill the purchase obligation apparently). I know that many studios for whom we’ve produced themes used in preorders point out this fact when we suggest selling them later.

Asia a market we considered. Sad truth is that we’d have to translate the game, which given the amount of dialogue (7000+ lines spoken, 9000+ lines of unspoken narration) the cost of the translation would be several times the actual cost of developing the game.

Thread Sony and MS need to mandate performance mode in all games next gen
I’d probably argue that yeah, it really can be, because there may be factors independent of resolution at play with certain scenes. To the point which you may be risking precipitous and noticeable drops in visual quality and introduction of unwanted artifacts at random and unpredictable intervals. Additionally, while modern game Engines do support dynamic res, there are minimum set points that may not yield 60 FPS. Additionally adding more layers of programming means longer dev time, more complexity, more bug testing and more work to fix those bugs. Optimization for the style and genre of title will always be key. Demanding 60 FPS for, say, a strategy game or a VN would serve little justifiable purpose. Still, depending on the game, I DO agree that dynamic res / performance mode should be used more, but not mandated.

VR is still very much a frontier, and it is growing. That said, I am not surprised to hear the lack of interest in reviewing the content: So much of it is incomplete and sporadic, it makes it difficult to ferret out the polished experiences for the investment of time and effort required. For reference, we launched 2MD in September, and though it presently sits at a very positive 95% after roughly 52 reviews on steam, no major websites picked up the game for review. Only small scale websites fully dedicated to VR experiences have given it any sort of in depth look. One metacritic site was kind enough to review the game 3 months after launch after we actually approached them and actively requested they give the game a go, so we were able to get a small mention - but you take what you can get.

Thread Sony is apparently refunding PS4 owners their Anthem digital purchase due to midgame crashes and complete shutdown.
No dude. FQA is mandatory, but it is not a deep dive into the performance of your game. It is a very cursory look at how certain basic functionalities are implemented that impact specific elements of the average user’s experience (and in the case of VR, their comfort) and ensuring that certain basic branding guidelines are adhered to. It is a short process that takes place over a couple of days, that follows a specific checklist of major use cases. It is also completely free, unless you submit multiple times in excess of what is acceptable, which is an exceptional and rare situation. It’s not their job to make sure your online component works, or that your game doesn’t hard crash 30 hours in. It’s not intended to be a subsition for good internal QA, and they make that expressedly clear. From what I know of the QA folks, they are very patient, they take their work seriously, and in my experience with them over the last couple of years, have been pretty cool. :)

Thread Dev of Cooking Game VR wants to bring it to PSVR but Sony has been ignoring them for over a year
Kind of surreal seeing my reddit post quoted here, but yeah. The story is as innocent as it is simple - when they filed their initial application it went to SIE Japan. They behave quite differently from SIEA as they are harder to engage as a Japanese business, and there was the reality of a very real language barrier at play ,I know this firsthand because we had to work through a SIEA laiason to engage them when we created the PS2 Legacy dynamic theme. It’s not an issue exclusive to SIEJ (this is also a problem for small developers that are based IN Japan as well). Either way, the issue is now resolved in the indie devs favor, and some of the arguments that flew around seem a bit silly as they are for the most part leveled at the wrong people (SIEA) based on some incorrect assumptions. ? But hey! you know if you guys wanna talk about an underdog indie PSVR game... I’m still holding out hope for one of you to make an OT ?????

Thread LTTP: PSVR - Cool, but the PS Camera is a garbage-tier tracking solution.
OP, Out of curiosity, would you be willing to give 2MD: VR Football a try if I sent you a PSN key? One area that I think we kind of cracked the code with was motion tracking. On PC, the game uses the native features of the VIVE and Oculus motion tracking to establish throw velocity, release height, angle, and positioning. On PS VR, one thing we noticed was most implementations on the platform were focusing on just using the optical tracking for motion. When researching motion implementation, we found a whitepaper on the move controllers from the PS3 era that revealed the presence of many more sensors than were actually in common use (magnetometer, gravitometer, etc) and implemented them into 2MD's throwing system, which has allowed for extremely accurate tracking on par with the PC version. Camera tracking is still necessary for the spacial component, of course, so occlusion would still cause issues, but I actually prefer the feel of the PS VR implementation. Additionally, we've actually found that, so long as you don't have to deal with other lightsources behind or around you, you can get a reasonable amount of room-scale out of the PS VR camera. We had to implement a standing-room-only chaperone system in order to pass VR quality assurance, but I've found that you can step beyond it if you need be. The long and short of it, though it's decidedly old tech, it can be accurate if you really get into the strengths of the sensors built into it (challenging though it may be). I definitely cannot speak for other devs at this point, I can only refer to our own experience.

Thread LTTP: PSVR - Cool, but the PS Camera is a garbage-tier tracking solution.
The PS4 had support for each, believe it or not. Didn’t have much issue with em interference as far as I’m aware. Occasionally you need to rotate the controllers to reestablish the neutral point, but that’s rare. We’re actually at 60 hz, but latency was not an issue. We did some lerping and interpolation of the hand models to smooth out some of the jerkiness when movements were idle.

this is simply untrue. It's a lower spec solution to be sure, but it's capable of an incredibly polished and immersive experience. It's not just how good your tools are that determines the quality of the end-product, at the end of the day it's how you use them :) and if your game design allows you to play to the platform's strengths, you can do some awesome things.

Kind of crazy what you find when you're cleaning stuff out at the end of the year, right? So, here are a bunch of keys lovingly selected for folks here. I wanted to do something different - this is a thread that will keep on giving throughout the day, as long as you participate. So, here's how it works: These are all US PSN keys. I don't post EU codes often because there are some fees tied to obtaining them, but setting up a US account is fairly easy and recommended anyway. Thread Teleporting & Snap-Turning VR movement options. What do you think?
I think the requirements on the console side have eased somewhat. We have opted for continuous movement at every turn (pun intended). Starting with VEV. As of 2MD we’ve as of yet had no one complain of significant nausea, and it passed Sony’s VR consultation muster to boot. It uses fairly instant acceleration and barely noticeable FOV adjustments. VEV was a more onerous case, but I think we got by by creating comfort options. So, at the end of the day, offering options to select movement to your comfort (if the game design allows) is probably best.

It’s kind of a necessary evil to use that app because for preorders there aren’t any other alternatives :) It’s definitely not super intuitive and the error codes aren’t exactly helpful. But the music in the sampler is definitely worth it, IMO, and the highest quality it supports.

I don’t think moderation should necessarily impact trust in the system, so long as the moderators are not connected to the product. And again, flagging obviously trolling reviews so they aren’t counted, but leaving them visible, would also be acceptable. As a consumer, I’d rather someone remove unhelpful or bad faith reviews from a product, because I’d rather not have to sift through them to find useful impressions. Additionally, I’d hope the consensus presented (in this case aggregate score) did not include said bad faith posts :)

Thread [Polygon] Steam developers speak: Maximum profits for Valve, minimum responsibilities
Eh. I’d argue that it does count because it’s a ‘negative’ review and affects the overall percentage, and if that percentage drops below 80% positive, suddenly reviews become mixed. The fact that we don’t really know how that affects the games score in the long run because the process is not transparent is an additional part of the problem. I realize savvy players know to look deeper than a cursory glance, but you can’t depend on the majority of your customers to do so. I agree with you the small sample size is an issue - we only have 67 reviews total, here, so negative reviews will have a greater impact. If the next steam update causes problems for more folks like him, and we’re not ‘fast enough’ to fix it for them, we could see the scores potentially tank, and visibility will drop. It kind of feels like the sword of Damocles. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have some oversight on steam’s part to allow for moderation in that instance. The customer’s perspective was not well thought out or entirely rational, because he played the game for months without incident prior to posting that review. A quick search would’ve revealed it wasn’t a rampant issue, meaning the problem likely existed outside of the game itself. On a personal level, yeah, it doesn’t really feel fair. Yet, the review stands. And it will potentially deter some people from looking further into the title—maybe those folks who don’t dig into the responses.

I think that’s a rather hasty conclusion. It’s demonstrably possible to have valid and helpful user reviews so long as some degree of moderation is exercised.

Thread [Polygon] Steam developers speak: Maximum profits for Valve, minimum responsibilities
I can provide a small example of this frustration. Again, anecdotal, based on our experience. It is NOT a condemnation of steam or valve, merely a mild example of these frustrations from a developer standpoint: So a few months ago this review popped up: We’d made no changes to the game for months, certainly no changes to the throwing system. This person also posted in the support forum, where we were troubleshooting this issue with a couple other people who had experienced it (it was random and rare). I enlisted one of the main programmers to take time out of his day to try and troubleshoot the issue with me. Within a couple days, we found a solution - turns out a recent steam VR update had nerfed throwing for a couple of players. THIS person was part of the discussion, and acknowledged the fix worked for them. We responded to their posts in the forum, and responded to the review as well. I’ve actually asked this person to reassess their review as the game works for them. Here is where the frustration stems: -the user has no interest in changing or removing the review (it’s the only review in his account). This is despite us taking the time to personally address his concern. -we have no way of removing the review or flagging it as a resolved support issue. Now, For the most part we have been lucky - the vast majority of our reviews have been positive, helpful, and kind, and the one or two negative reviews we’ve received were on point and actually helped us tweak certain elements for a better experience. I can say without hesitation that the fan support on steam has been wonderful, small though the base may be. But being unable to filter chaff like this is frustrating. There are certainly worse examples of this as well: It was early enough in the games release that we actually tracked down his argument via a google search, which was with someone else not affiliated with any of us. We tried explaining it to him, but he’d already fucked off and was long gone. Flagged it, finally got a response from a mod which basically said “deal with it and move on”. So there are definitely areas, I think, where this system could be improved or served by dedicated support.

Believe it or not, visuals have not been an issue on steam? Folks tend to immediately gravitate toward the flow of play and the mechanics. Even the negative reviews we’ve gotten did not take issue with the way it looks. Ironically, when we debuted the games trailer on PS4’s YouTube, the visuals WERE immediately trounced upon :) And that’s expected, honestly, so I don’t have issue with that. I certainly expect many if not most to take one look and think “Nope”. And that’s ok. Again, im referring to what each platform holder offers in way of support, I think, relative to the percentages of sales you give them. Lastly, curation may be as simple as seeing that a game is, for example, an exact clone of another game released on the store with a different name, which iirc is still an issue. Oh, and thanks for the kind words about the game :)

Yeah - I’m positing that a problem exists, and based on reaponses, expanding on that, acknowledging there are likely multiple factors. Edit 2:with regards to the ‘less games’ assertion, I suppose the answer lies somewhere in the middle, I’m sure, but these points of visibility and curation are not mutually exclusive. I imagine It’s possible to ensure some degree of quality without dramatically reducing the number of games released, and its possible to provide easier visibility to smaller titles without depending on their sales qualifying them Edit: I’ll state again: having experienced development at the same level on two major platforms, the experience had been drastically different. Folks chime in to pose and sometimes argue their reasons why, and while I’m fine with responding and expanding on that, it goes beyond the point, which was the experience itself to begin with. I won’t pretend to know the business side of things the way Valve or Sony does, all I can state with any certainty is that my experience with each has been, at times, dramatically different from an Indy perspective. But if it’s not clear I haven’t really succeeded at clarifying my perspective. And we seem to be getting lost in the weeds. So, I’ll leave it at that. No worries.

Thread [Polygon] Steam developers speak: Maximum profits for Valve, minimum responsibilities
The HTC/Valve connection is really irrelevant to the issue, though, as the platform is Valve’s, the software is valves, and the technology in the headset is at least partially valves. They are taking an agreed upon cut of sales, the same cut they take for non-VR software, and to a certain extent can dictate price in other regions. And no, curation does not automatically lock out games with smaller budgets or lower production values. Our first PSVR game had a budget of $2500. Curation, at minimum, ensures (or should ensure) a minimum level of quality and functionality. As developers we don’t ask for curation because we want “less games on the platform,” we ask for curation so that the pipeline isn’t clogged with ridiculous NON-games and similar chaff. If you eliminate the cash grab asset flips and troll software from the distribution, you open the pipeline for legitimate software that otherwise gets buried in the deluge. So yeah, you’ve made some broad assumptions about curation that are incorrect.

Again, with valve, THEY are selling the VR platform (Steam VR) so the motivation to highlight those titles should be equivalent to Sony’s. Additionally, they sell the Vive hardware through steam, so how are they any different than Sony? Also it seems you’ve got curation completely wrong. Other devs don’t have any say on whether our game is released - Sony’s curation merely ensures the basic, expected functionality and minimum user experience of the software independent of the actual gameplay, beyond just running on the hardware without crashing. There are plenty of shit games on PS4, but most of them are still heads and tales above the worst asset flip joke titles on steam. And regarding visibility; well that’s the paradox, isn’t it? You can’t increase your visibility without increased sales, but how do you increase sales without first increasing visibility? Simply distributing keys and bundles are not the answer. Quality as a metric for visibility should not be dictated by sales numbers.

Other platform holders do take it upon themselves to provide minimum visibility based on this, so it’s not unreasonable to ask for, say, a banner rotation somewhere for 1-2 days to market your game, which may also be exclusive to their platform. Ask, they do not offer support in the way of filtering spam / trolling reviews, which can easily negatively impact your visibility.

Our personal experience: Compared to steam, Sony absolutely rolls out the red carpet. -Software and hardware support is available 24/7 for developer issues through their dev network and platform support. Email, private forum, or even over the phone. -we have a living, breathing contact who answers our phone calls and provides meaningful assistance, escalates issues if need be, and even helps us make connections with other devs. -they give us store visibility, banners, videos posted to YouTube channel and occasional twitter promotion. -compared to steam the store is actually curated effectively (game-wise) with comparatively few bad actors slipping through the cracks -Format quality assurance actually ensures basic usability and functionality of titles. In our humble experience, comparatively, steam offers none of those things. Everything we’ve done on steam, with the exception of getting support for setting up a retail arcade sku for our game, we had to figure out ourselves. We too have experienced the angry negative review from the person demanding tech support (in all cases for an issue with steamVR, not our game). But we have no way of removing those reviews (I’ve tried, and basically been told to “live with it”) even though they negatively impact our sales, dragged down percentages, and were obviously left in bad faith.

One of these days I should show you folks the kind of stuff we end up leaving by the wayside... Well, what the heck, why not now? This was a prototype/proposal set for some outbreak day concepts that utilized 3D environments and a new particle routine to recreate the spore effects from the first game: I don’t think any of those really clicked, but I still hold out hope one day ;) I want my “spore engine” to infect a dashboard. It wasn’t just TLOU either. For example, this was a proposal for an official concept for an uncharted anniversary theme I created entirely myself, from modeling, to composition, with textures based entirely off of screenshots and concept art. At the end of the day, there wasn’t enough time for the team to consider it and provide feedback for iterative polish in order make the launch deadline of the collection, so they passed on it. Still, I learned a lot of new tricks doing it at least ;) things like embedded physics, smoke and flame effects, reflection, and a dynamic “dirty lens” bokeh effect...figured out how to do all that in real time in the theme software.

This is despite the fact that demoing VR is still more combersome and involved than standard display. Not at present. I’d probably need Era folks to approach me in some sort of formal capacity, since it would require permission. The old ones were a community project at the time. I think, If I did one, it could be distributed for free, though, which is a nice change from before (previously they wouldn’t let us give them away, but that stance changed a year or so ago. ).

Another fairly dry technical discussion, which gets to the heart of the most dreaded error / limitation that theme authors can encounter, which may highlight why it is uncommon to see many themes pushing the technical envelope on the marketplace. This video also demonstrates behind the scenes look at our process, and also features a sneak peak at more to come. I’ll reiterate, none of this stuff is currently planned for release or sale, rather I was squashing bugs this weekend and realized it might be a good opportunity to give folks a little insight into this process.

An update on this theme project, which ironically was born in this community. A great deal of changes and additions since the last video. with additional optimization, the theme is now stable on a dev kit. additionally, I've added a cool street-level intro / transition to help reinforce the sense of scale. I've also worked in a very basic lighting shift tied to time of day - it's not a day / night cycle as the city lights are always lit, rather it a a tonal shift, with warm colors during the day, and cooler colors at night. The music is also still a work in progress, but more fleshed out in this video. I'm going for a fusion between Akira and Bladerunner (no pressure), IE, mixing detuned and heavy synth with traditional drums and a moog.

This is a big one. The "intro' segment has been fleshed out today, with additional details added to the street scene immediately preceding the theme proper; Rebalancing texture memory has allowed me to inject needed detail into the buildings, and I've even come up with a way to make the street appear appropriately wet -- which brings me to the next major addition: Through some VERY creative GPU load management, I've been able to implement a dynamic rain effect. this includes falling rain, as well as an out-of-focus wet-lens bokeh effect complete with randomly falling droplets on glass - the bokeh is additionally, subtly in motion and changes over time, so it will not create image-retention issues for OLED screens. ( I often mention that we create these themes with OLED TV's in mind: This is meant to reflect the fact that we use deep blacks, and leave NO static images onscreen to minimize image retention.). This is the first time we've done dynamic rain to this degree, and I'm actually happy with the results for once. Additionally, primary foley and ambient effects have been added. Audio features multiple inspirations, from Vangelis to Akira, with sweeping electronic ambient effects. Of course falling rain ambience has been added as well. Additionally, I'm going to be experimenting with multi-channel audio with this theme, so stay tuned. The theme loop point is actually visible in the video - We set a seamless audio loop point in the music and the theme backdrop, so the intro and associated elements do not play again until the console is restarted. (If this also happens to give you Midgar vibes . . . well, it wasn't my original aim, but as it's unfolded I decided to lean into it. Truthfully, I'd love to tackle that if Square Enix wants something special for FF-VII remake . . .) ;)

Actually some people, in requesting this theme, wanted a street level scene as well—so this actually ticks that box too. Honestly if folks are in a rush to get to whatever they are playing it probably won’t matter too much - though remember the theme will already be set in the city loop once they go back to the dashboard. It’s not possible to have a theme respond to an app closing unfortunately ;)

Okay. Another concept that is not in any way, shape or form a final product or planned for release - this is more about showing folks how the sausage is made, so to speak. Also please note: this is unofficial, unfinished concept, and not for release. This is something I've been tooling around for a long, long time - since Destiny 1, in fact. As we don't know anyone in Activision or Bungie these days, it seemed like another interesting work in progress to share. If we ever had the chance, I'd jump on this in a heartbeat. The concept behind this theme is an AI companion that lives on your dashboard. the Ghost here is not one object - , whose animations are governed entirely by script and a relative coordinate system. I've programmed some basic expressions based on eyeballing some of the cinematics - some with the horns open at various intervals, some of them closed. Additionally, the aperture of the iris changes accurate to the game as well, and governs the glow from the inner light along with subtle motions of its body. When the user goes from the Content to the function screens, then, the interactive elements come into play - the ghost changes layers from the foreground to the background, and zooms in on the menu - effectively watching you navigate the settings area and reading your notifications. I've tried to make the eye motions realistic in this sense, although I'd say there's still room for improvement. Again, all motion was created after eyeballing some cinematics from Destiny 1. Because everything is governed by script, we've come up with a range of expressions and behaviors - freeing the theme up from being tied to any pre-canned animation. This creates a plethora of potential opportunities to make every startup unique. Thoughts are welcome. Again, if the opportunity ever arose to do something like this officially, I'd jump at the chance . :)

No themes are 4K, despite what some creators might insist. The dashboard background is always internally rendered at 1080p/60. However, we have noticed that real-time 3D elements upscale better than flat / prendered assets. I use the term “4K friendly” for that reason. All of my modern themes and the “remastered” themes I’ve created were made with this in mind.

This will require several passes to add elements. -I still need to create signage elements, -I'm deciding on how to implement holograms - they need to be and will be user interactive. -I need to make another style of car. I've also composed an early soundtrack, to give me some ambiance to work off of. Thread m0dus's Ps4 theme thread: creating themes, unseen concepts, and maybe ... uh, requests?
Hi everyone. As you all know, I like to make PS4 themes. Official and freelance. I have some cool stuff to talk about, but I probably need to get a little background out of the way first: [ Ramble ] Some folks might remember the last time I created a thread like this - From the first day I opened up our PS4 devkit and began digging into the very obscure documentation that covered elements of the PS4's GUI, and exploring the limitations imposed on things like memory and GPU utilization, it evolved into a huge 'catch all' thread with more than 60 themes that I created, many of them free, many more of them for sale. That thread is now gone, but by my request - I had often worried that, as it grew, it started to skirt the boundary between community involvement and self-promotion, so I actually minimized updates in the recent year so as not to compound the issue. Despite this, the rest of the forum, I think, was fairly gracious in allowing me to have my own little corner to wave my hands and get excited about GUI skinning. I've even noticed a few people asking if I'd resurrect that thread here. I decided that, if I was ever going to do so, I'd have to take a different approach. That being said, community input has always been at the core of what I do, when it comes to themes. So, as with many things, now seemed a good time for a fresh start: I want to share what I like to do in an capacity, because that has always made creating these things far more rewarding. (I'm never going to have the output of the other guys - many creators that, as far as I know, spend every waking moment recycling stock photos and royalty-free music to sell on the marketplace. At last estimate, for every 1 of our themes that goes up, I've counted 10-20 others that would also get released in the same week, or even the same day; many of them from the same groups. I won't begrudge others for wanting to sell their wares, but I'm always going to put quality and creativity first. I don't have the patience or the desire to tie myself to a desk and come up with bundle ideas.) For that reason, in the last year, the lion's share of work we've done has actually been contractual, for larger publishers (Capcom, Oddworld, Sony, Gearbox, Telltale, etc). That stuff has been a blast to do, though as result my independent stuff has fallen a bit by the wayside. If it's okay with you all, I'd like to continue to share concepts with everyone, because many of them don't get competed / released. Also, I'm incredibly OCD, and I want to try out all the new little forum tools available (embedding, bullet points, etc), so humor me there. So, as it stands, while I will link to videos and examples of our work, No more all-inclusive lists. As a courtesy, for those who will inevitably ask, feel free to PM me if you want to see what the hell I'm talking about, but I'll stop there. Otherwise, I leave it up to people here. Also, I will continue to post links to free stuff, as it becomes available. ( I'll also give away stuff in batches, periodically, because I'm sitting on like and, last I checked, Kotaku still isn't interested in covering my work. Mostly cause I don't do dancing skeletons, I think ;) .) Lastly, I just want to clear the air here - at present there are no plans to do an official ResetEra theme. Firstly, I don't have permission to do so; the last forum theme I created required special dispensation from management, and because (at the time) themes could not be given away for promotion, it had to be sold. However, after about a year, that changed, and they were made free for the duration of their remaining time on the store (another 1 1/2 years I believe); All in all, it was really the product of a truly unique situation, so....again, no plans. I'm not closing the door on the idea entirely, I just want folks to know it's not up to me. Oh, before I forget - since I'm discussing concepts that may get incorporated into final projects down the road, I want to ask that folks refrain from posting other company's themes here. From a professional standpoint, It'd be weird critiquing others works as part of the discussion. Secondly, I don't want to accidentally 'lift' any ideas that have already been done, subconscious or otherwise. Third, as mentioned above, I'm going to refrain from posting direct links to my 'stuff' on PSN, so I'll ask everyone else to do the same. :-) [/ Ramble ] So...Now that all that business has been said...What do I have to talk about today... I mentioned that I really wanted to talk about - unreleased pieces that push the technology (such as it is) in new directions, or revisits old ideas in different ways, but don't necessarily represent final products. Theme software is so limited in terms of the size and complexity of modern assets, I feel like it's almost like a demo scene of sorts: You have to create something that is visually complex, but you don't have the resources to do it justice in the traditional way. You have to 'cheat' to achieve effects that even the most rudimentary free engines can create with a couple of simple clicks. So, with that in mind, here's a couple ideas I've been playing with: One such piece is this Uncharted Anniversary theme concept - Now, I need to stress that this is NOT OFFICIAL. It is not being positioned for release, and ND has no involvement in this theme. We've worked with them before - and continue to work with them on other projects (!)- but this is something I did myself. We generated all the assets you see, in an attempt to try a bunch of different concepts in one place. So, that was cool. As I said, it provides ideas and techniques that we can incorporate into other things...I just don't know what yet. I've gone back to a couple of old concepts that I worked on previously; As some of you know we've been tweaking a special algorithm which allows us to adjust variables based on the time-of-day using the internal clock. We've done it a couple of times now, most notably with Hanami. This allows us to change a ton of theme parameters, and create scenes like this: ...that change in real-time over the course of the day. The mist in the foreground and background moves as well. I don't really know where I'm going with this one, but combined with some environmental audio, the effect is nice and serene. And another one -- I've been working on a 'cosmic zoom" concept, in an attempt to create a scene on an interstellar scale - starting with a perspective several AU away from a nebula, that zooms in to focus on the remnants of a supernova. Creating everything out of 3D assets rather than 2-D bitmaps is important, because with the advent of PS4 pro and checkerboard 4K, it's the only way to achieve a sharp high-resolution image. that's because the dashboard background, internally, is always being rendered at 1080p, then upscaled. This accentuates compression artifacts present in bitmaps. For that reason, I've had to work harder to create all elements in 3D in the last couple of years. Anyway, I've got more to share. Oh, and something really special is coming next week - hence why I did not release or attempt to release anything this month. But, more on that later. I'd make a separate thread for it, but I'm guessing someone will beat me to it. I guess - I can't say anything right now, but I'm fairly sure (like 90% sure) you'll know it was me when you see it.

I had tackled the futuristic city before...ironically I actually completed a fair amount, but I wasn't sure where to take this concept. I wanted to compose some blade runner -esq music for it, I suppose, but I'm probably going to revisit this concept with a clean slate: The fancy stuff here are the city lights, which are a procedurally layered texture, and the ships, which are instanced.

I've had no shortage of requests for an Era dynamic theme, we just finished up with E3, we're in the middle of some other stuff, but now seemed like a reasonable time. This is being conceived, first and foremost, as a community project. Something to help ease the doldrums of summer (seriously, who actually plays videogames, anyway?). I will consider any constructive input that you folks want to give. Our mission will be to create a premium-quality dynamic theme that will feature much of the proprietary programming I've developed over the years (it was kind of strange to write that). Some basics: I'll update this thread periodically, and I'll update the OP with live stream session times in advance if there's enough interest. So...Yep.
