Thread Aircraft Carrier Theodore Roosevelt faces Coronavirus Outbreak
it doesn't matter. he e-mailed it to somewhere between 20-30 people, who then have this information and can forward / send it on to whoever. There is a rear admiral aboard his ship who is responsible for the carrier group, and who is his commanding officer, who he didn't go to with this before blasting it out wide. He wasn't wrong, but how he went about it was, and created a real problem. The damning thing is, when he sent it, the Navy was already working to get those folks off the ship and find hotel rooms in Guam for them. They don't have endless billeting there. He displayed really bad judgement, and you don't get to do that in his position.

this has nothing to do with the administration. if you are entrusted with an aircraft carrier, you don't get to break that trust with command. Once you do, they aren't going to trust you with an aircraft carrier anymore. It's really cut and dry. He likely knew this would happen when he did it.

That's not what the Navy said today. And regardless, his actions led to the information leaking. It's super cut and dry. Moving 2700 sailors into quarantine on Guam isn't something you can just snap your fingers at, either. And if you don't think that command isn't taking the readiness state of one of their aircraft carrier groups seriously, then you have a lot of reading to do.

I know some were worried about CA ballots being messed up (due to one tweet earlier today), but my ballot arrived just fine and on scheduleI read somewhere the theory in Iowa was that people don't really care who the nominee is, they just plan to vote blue. And in fact, the large number of choices is likely suppressing the turnout a bit as it's overwhelming to try and pick (this does follow a lot of other research about decision paralysis)

While older school of thought was you'd be mostly out by then - given longer lifespans and earlier retirements, you pretty much have to be partially invested still at retirement for the funds you'll need 10+ years from now (or even 20-25 years from now). So far less invested than you would be at say age 40, but being totally out at say age 62 if you're healthy and expect to live another 20-25 years is likely not optimal.

yeah people are misunderstanding the statistics on Bernie being the favorite in every state. He's just favored, but upsets happen. Also this is based on info RIGHT NOW. It's projected based off the current polls and results. Those can shift dramatically as real data continues to come in. But it's also projecting ahead to see Sanders wins in NH which then snowball into NV and SC, and then snowball into Super Tuesday. So a lot of dominos have to continue falling for it to end up there. This also doesn't have anyone dropping out - some of Bernie's advantage is he has such a high-floor due to his locked in base of supports that if the whole field continues to stay in (and Bloomberg arrives to further fracture the moderate voters) - he is in the best position to end with the highest percentage of votes. The model overall shows that right now he's the inside track for a majority of pledged delegates, but the second most likely scenario is no one reaches that majority and the convention is contested. All of that lines up with the current data - but post Iowa polls, and polls in each state as the primaries approach, will rapidly change things and the model will react accordingly

I think the larger issue is Kathleen isn’t really the visionary here. An incredible producer and collaborator, but they tossed Lucas’s stuff and brought in external teams. I think she’s done a pretty good job all things considered as all five movies feel like Star Wars and hit the right production values, were mostly on time etc, and hindsight is 20/20. For a long time the filmmakers have always sort of overruled any EU canon, so the story group is at the mercy of those filmmakers. Rian worked closely with them, but it appears JJ didn’t really (was the Pablo letterboxed account ever validated?) - and did most of the work inside of Bad Robot. It’s also interesting so much of TFA and ROTS leaked while TLJ mostly stayed under wraps by comparison. Bad Robot is a leaky ship, it seems

Also Luke's X-Wing was OPERATIONAL?!?!?! I mean we have established in ESB you can submerge an X-Wing and it's fine. Even though Luke had used part of the wing of it for the door of his hut. But it completely undermines what he did in TLJ - he could've left the planet and helped in person! I suppose you could argue that he had an impact remotely through the force and that is a bigger choice then jumping in your X-Wing, but given that Hyperspace is now teleportation, Luke could've actually shown up! GAH. (Also, nice Imperial TIE Fighter that Kylo found in the wreckage of DS2... cool it had a hyperdrive on it... - this doesn't ruin the movie for me, but it's a detail that is annoying. An Imperial Shuttle or something would've been cooler)

Thread Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker |OT| Revenge of a Sith (SPOILERS NOW OPEN)
So I have a lot of thoughts First - I had fun, it's a ride, and I love seeing Finn/Rey/Poe together. The scale and set pieces were very cool. but thematically and character development wise, the movie just doesn't land. The ending doesn't really feel earned and the stakes the whole time feel pretty arbitrary. They keep saying oh we have 16 hours, we have 8 hours, etc. Yet we're racing around and the universe continues to feel smaller and smaller with Hyperspace being instant transportation. Man Hyperspace has just been whittled down into space teleportation in this trilogy, after the original trilogy specifically calls it out as difficult. The Hyper skipping (with other ships following him through it?!) felt like JJ just doubling down on the insane stuff from TFA. If you were someone upset at plot holes in TLJ (there really aren't many) there's so much here that's even more quesitonable. The entire Palpatine arc doesn't land at all, it's like digging something out of the toy box and just being like because. It makes Rey's arc less impactful overall. The amount of fake deaths in the movie is just eye-rolling and removes most of the stakes by the end. We see all of the time die (quicksand), Chewie die (shuttle), Ben mortally wounded (lightsaber), Ben killed (throw down a pit), C-3PO (memory wipe), Rey (Palpatine)... am I missing any? The new characters have no time to breathe at all, D-O is like ok - cool you get to voice a droid JJ. Keri Russell is wasted. I think overall the thing that bothers me the most how unearned many of the moments felt. These characters were cashing in. It's very similar to Star Trek Into Darkness, with the repeat of the Khan moment. Yes people love that moment, but the characters in Into Darkness hadn't earned it. It ended up making both movies ring hallow. Though I'll admit I was much angrier about Into Darkness than this.

it directly followed the movie - it gave Finn a character arc about running away just with Rey (he also only went to Starkiller Base to save her) - and shows how he joined the Resistance and has his eye opened. Poe has a story-arc that matures him from hothead pilot to leader of the Resistance. Rey obviously has a huge story line. What do you mean cameos? I mean what choice did Rian have here. We were literally left on a Cliffhanger with Rey handing the lightsaber to Luke. Once he thought about how that HAD to play out based on both of the characters and what we knew about them, he had to show it. The choices made in TFA directly impact TLJ, and most of what people complain about is the honest reaction and writing to how TFA resets the universe. In fact, if Rian did anything, he was trying to untangle that, and leave a clean slate for whoever did episode IX.

Phasma was a disaster from the beginning - the most decorated soldier of the First Order betrays them by dropping the shields? That one JJ decision is so bad that the story group had to write novels and comics to clean it all up. Your idea just unneccesarily complicates the whole thing - how would Phasma even know Finn is going to Canto Bight? Snoke was dumb, ooo another Emperor. Rian did us all a favor by disposing of him

No I think it goes for all the characters --- my point is the story choices around Snoke etc are all around Kylo / Rey. But all of the characters act honestly based on everything we know about them from the previous films, from Luke to Poe to Finn. And the little sidequest to Canto Bight is far more important for what it caused (help in inspiring the Resistance, being the spark that lit flames on a planet) than what their original goal was. I also think much of Canto Bight is far more in line with George Lucas's Star Wars than some fans want to admit.

Emotionally supporting one of your best girlfriends after a (bad?) break-up is pretty up there. Especially when the plan being broken is "hang out at her place and go the shop." You can do re-schedule to do that any night of the week. All we're saying is that being annoyed / disappointed at the plans changing / not getting to see her is fine. But you can't hold it against her as she's doing the right thing, and the thing you honestly should want her to do. They key is really separating the disappointment at the situation from reading into the relationship/anything long-term from it.

Thread DatingEra - This isn't like one of your animes
Feeling a little disappointed is natural of course, and I can get annoyed at sudden plan changes too --- but you shouldn't be bothered by it. it's completely acceptable. The only instance where you might be bothered is if you had something special planned that couldn't be re-accommodated - but even then, bigger tragedies or events could overrule there. Extrapolate out to a full long-term relationship - you're going to see her all the time. So if she has something comes up she needs to do for the rest of her life / relationships - you WANT her to do those things. The best thing she can do for your relationship is to take care of herself and her friends / relationships. That may mean you have to change plans an accommodate, but you're the ultimate priority in the end. I wouldn't over think your texts, but try to reframe it in your head - you're being a good partner by letting her go take care of her friend, and you're actually putting your relationship ahead of your own desires right now by letting her do what she needs to do. That's a much healthier place to be, because you don't want to hold the other person back from their life and relationships that make them happy and who they are.

Attractions Magazine just posted some new photos from this weekend: Total Hollywood Footprint: Here's a closer look at the Mario Kart "track" While the Hollywood land should be smaller than Osaka / Orlando, the actual Mario Kart footprint should be pretty similar. The ride itself seems to take up a similar amount of space that Transformers does - though Transformers obviously stops in front of screens for big periods. I'm assuming Mario Kart is going to use similar tricks to "extend" its track length.

DCA was built to alleviate, and then needed a billion dollar redo. But end of the day they are going for things that drive revenue not capacity. Tower of Terror retheme didn’t add capacity. The Pier has just been redone but they wanted more IP for revenue reasons. And Bug’s Land’s capacity wasn’t necessarily being used (approx 1600 hourly?) whereas Marvel will be really successful there and drive people to the parks. I just see them thinking Star Wars is in good shape for a bit, and looking at what else they can do. A new Star Wars ride isn’t going to make the park any busier than the first two rides, or sell any more merch anytime in the foreseeable future. (The next truly big SW thing will be the Orlando Hotel) Hence why I think they will be putting the capital investment elsewhere. But I hope you’re right and this is a new era of build build build. I just don’t see it tho. I think the boom is around putting the two big IPs in the parks, and once that is complete, it’ll be the measured decisions as always, with unrepresented characters having a big leg up (looking at you Anna and Elsa).

Ok no. First I said Disneyland, the Marvel Rides at DCA don’t count (and those are replacing multiple existing rides too so aren’t necessarily capacity drivers!) Secondly - after Rise and Mickey and Minnie; there are two primary things they are rumored to be looking at - getting Frozen into Fantasyland, and redeveloping Tomorrwland. That alone pushes further Galaxy’s Edge rides out a decade. And let’s not talking about the parking structure like it’s some huge thing to increase capacity. They HAD to build it. Parking has been a gigantic sore spot at the resort and for the City of Anaheim for years now (on busy park days Disney causes utter traffic gridlock in anaheim due to lack of parking). They badly underestimated the way Annual passholders would get to the park and it’s why they have to gouge you for 25 dollars and won’t sell you annual parking to try and use price to reduce demand. They have been so under the amount of parking spaces they need and they are really just back to even now, if that. We will see. Capital investments for new rides aren’t as common as they seem right now (19 year drought for Disneyland!!!) - and when they are happening it’s around getting specific IP into the park - hence why I’d guess Frozen and Tron (?) and far more likely candidate for Disneyland before more Star Wars rides are.

My point being that flying strategic bombers towards another country's airspace is perhaps more provocative than a Navy reconnaissance drone that is designed to watch the waters of a (depending on who you ask) critical shipping lane. Taking things kinetic is also very provocative. You can certainly make a case if the Global Hawk went into their airspace, though the Pentagon is adamant it didn't. But that's basically what makes this shipping lane such a powder keg, it's very narrow, and Iran claims a fair chunk of it. They were smart not to shoot at the P-8 tho. A. that's a trickier plane to actually take down as it has countermeasures and B. the senate and house would quickly fall in line behind a much larger response if they killed American servicemen.

It wasn’t a “ride” - they were going to go up and down the land main street style. There really isn’t room right now for anything else without demolishing buildings to the north. Most of the land is bound by Disneyland Drive and existing parts of the park

Yes - you're correct - I'm just noting the third "ride" wasn't a classic ride in terms of being an attraction with a footprint, just beasts you could ride across the land. Of course the capacity and crowding issues there basically makes that a non-starter for some time. They did build with expansion in mind - but that seems like it's a long ways off as they have other fish to fry for the next 8-10 years.

So more info: Galaxy's Edge is open at the beginning of the day and once it fills they switch to boarding passes on the app. Oga's and Savi's reservations open at 7am each day. If you have a reservation, it also acts as a boarding pass -allowing you and a party (of up to 6 for Savi's) entry to Star Wars land 1 hour prior. Oga's party size can be as large as you like. Savi's is for one builder and two guests. You'll be charged the 200 dollars when you reserve Savi's. Non-refundable so if you don't show, you're out of luck. If you no-show Oga's, you're charged 10 dollars per guest. No Fastpass will be available for Falcon - expect 2 hour line to be a barometer for a healthily full land. No reservations for Droid Depot.

No the digital pass is just to enter the land. I don't expect Fastpass for the Falcon. Galaxy’s Edge visitors using the virtual queue boarding passes will be admitted in a continuous flow throughout the day as earlier visitors exit the new Star Wars land. The booming business at and has forced Disneyland to require reservations for the popular spaceport cocktail bar and the lightsaber-building shop. Beginning Monday, Disneyland visitors will be required to book an advance reservation if they want to visit the limited capacity locations. Expect a longer line for once the Galaxy’s Edge boarding pass period begins. The queue for the new land’s only attraction typically had less than an hour’s wait during the . The Rise of the Resistance dark ride, the new land’s second attraction, is expected to open later this year."

right now you can do it all if someone in the party hits the cantina line late enough, while the rest of the party does lightsabers first thing and gets an early enough reservation. The Falcon - in the 2nd / 3rd hour of a reservation, when only one group is in the land, is about a 15-25 minute wait. When new groups arrive, it's around 45-60. So if you get lightsabers knocked out in the first hour, with a later cantina reservation, you can ride the Falcon multiple times. You do have to find a time to slip into Dok Ondar's, which can have a 20-30 minute wait to enter at peak moments. Plus there's the whole Droid thing. All bets are off when the reservation system is removed tho. It sounds like there is a digital pass system.

The Star Wars hotel will be per-person for sure. Each bed will be accounted for, and given that a portion of the payment is entertainment, transport, experiences, and food per each person, it'll be on a per-person-basis. Much like a cruise, it's a full experience, not just a hotel. I'll do you one even more - it's likely that if you try to go to the hotel ALONE, you'll pay more for just yourself than if you had 2 people in a room. The double occupancy rate per person will be less than one person staying in the room to account for the lost revenue on the second person. (ie, if it's 1000 per night based on double occupancy - ie 500 per person, a single person staying in that room will pay 750 per night, instead of 500) When you wrap your head around that, and look at how cruise-lines and all-inclusive hotels price (per head), you will understand the model of this resort, which is unlike any other that Disney has.

The whole thing will be Star Wars themed, and probably tell a canon, in-universe story. You can get that no where else in the world for no other IP. That’s why it’ll command a premium. Indoor spaceship pools are awesome. The Park Hyatt in Tokyo demands 600-1100 dollars a night and doesn’t have outdoor amenities Cover the top deck of the cruise ship and it’s the same thing. I don’t understand why it’s so hard to imagine. You are living out a Star Wars fantasy!

it's not tho. the whole attraction IS this hotel. The park is part of it - but you can go to the park by buying a ticket, or get fastpasses by staying cheapo at Art of Animation. You are staying here because you want to live and breathe Star Wars for 42 hours or whatever. So you can dress ins costume, take themed shuttles (galactic excursions?) directly into Galaxy's Edge (maybe when it's closed to the general public too?) and experience a storyline onboard the ship (resort), while feeling like you're in space the whole time. You're not going to this resort to just drop your bags and then head out to the Magic Kingdom all day. People will want to stay on the resort, and if they leave, it'll be to go to Galaxy's Edge to again stay in universe and/or continue the storyline of the resort with characters that inhabit Batuu. Edit - I also assume this will be a 3-day/2-night thing (check in 3pm on Day 1, checkout 10 am on Day 3). People will just block out 2 days of their 7-8-9 day Disney Vacation to go over there, and in many cases will come from other resorts or then go stay in other resorts after they complete the experience. Don't think of it as a hotel, think of it as a multi-day/night experience.

What do you do on a ship during a sea day? Spend money. Supposedly you will check in on the ground (and I assume get your clothing and change) and then be “shuttled” to the resort which is a ship in space, so yes, unless you are booked there, you aren’t going to the resort at all. The only people there will be ones experiencing it and paying to stay there. And how do they keep you busy on a cruise ship? A pool and area for kids, activities, shops to buy stuff, musical performances, bars and lounges, themed meals, story elements that occur in the hotel. Maybe even a casino (even if not for real money a Sabacc tournament would be a hit). Like it’s pretty easy to imagine programming a resort like this when you may only need to do 3 or 4-day cycles and then You can just start over for the next batch of guests. They run cruise ships where they keep people entertained on a ship for more hours, this will be a piece of cake because they can do SW story telling and then make mundane elements exotic. I’m imagining pools with liquids other than water etc

yeah, that's crazy... but not that crazy. A 3-day Disney Cruise for 2 can easily run 1800 so that's 450 per person per night. Peak timing or nicer rooms run way more. I imagine pricing will be similar to Disney Cruising, probably a bit more. Figure 400-500 per person, per night - closer to 700-800 during peak periods--- with plenty of add-ons / suites / to jack the price up if you desire (already heard this in terms of the rumors about costuming). And my assumption is it'll be handled like a cruise in that people will all check in on the same day, follow the story together, and then all check out. Maybe keep it to like a 2-night experience? If I was Disney, I'd probably even theme the ship as an galactic cruising vessel just to keep things simple.

I mean, it's a cruise ship where it doesn't cost money to actually run and operate a huge ship. Which I guess isn't really THAT bad, but should allow for some more flexibility pricing wise as I imagine a lot of those fixed costs will be way way reduced by being a land-based hotel.

It's possible there are hold-over local players (they are brought in for back-ups, but after serving as a back-up for a full day without playing, you're brought back the next taping date as a confirmed player) - so an LA player might've seen 5 games on a previous date. The first players who play against him since his airing began will be those in the last 2 weeks (games 53-57, and 58-62). half of it because I use Twitter a lot while I watch sports, and the streaming services lag by a bit, and then the actual web-sites you can stream from (aka WatchESPN) are even FURTHER behind. Cable/Satellite is behind the actual stadium, but usually by the time tweets from the stadium are published and in your feed, the action is occurring on the TV. One of my greatest joys of sports and Twitter is the sports-bar atmosphere it provides and so any major delay in receiving a live event is detrimental.

the only reason cable is "expensive" is because you have to pay ridiculous fees and rent their equipment. The actual content cost, when the rest is removed, is essentially comparable to similar streaming plans. I've owned my own DVRs and Modems for years, and find that to make the equation go in cable's favor (esp since I get all the app access with my cable log anyway) I also watch sports, and sports is a cable / satellite game.

Boeing will be just fine. Beyond taking some sort of lawsuit hit. And even then, based on the preliminary report, one should still expect the Lion Air report will place some culpability on Lion due to the maintenance / logging issues that should've taken that plane out of service. 737 MAX will be back in service in a matter of weeks and will continue to be delivered in the thousands.

It’d be interesting if it was actually an auto throttle or engine power management issue.... if the throttle went crazy, it would push the nose up, which would then cause the AP or MCAS to trim the nose down... and if the readings were messed up the throttle could kick even higher. That could actually explain both incidents then.

I don't think anyone was trying to blame the Ethiopian pilots, we don't know what happened there yet - these are the first real details. The FMS of the jet should provide a constant speed climb - so if something went wrong with engine power management then that could mess with that. Regardless, at least from the NYT report, it seems like it was not the same issue that occurred with Lion Air.

Flying is matter of fact to me. My grandfather was a pilot, my dad is a pilot, my brother is a pilot, my cousin is a pilot, I've flown airplanes with them and had the stick. I've known people who died in plane crashes and military plane crashes in total hull losses. Tried and true airframes. Shit happens, things break. My dad has had serious airborne emergencies. I've crossed the pacific twice this year already and am about to do it again. I flew on two different Indonesian airlines last month. I fly on Southwest's fleet of 737s (and have ridden on a couple MAXs) on a monthly basis. And I get the general public, but the The Dallas News piece and CNN have been fanning the flames on it in particular. The whole article about pilots complaining when there were like 3 noteworthy complaints in a database was accompanied with ridiculous headlines. The media does this for any type of disaster, so I get it, but I read all five complaints in that database and that headlines were far worse than the actual pilot reports. Certainly two accidents on a new airframe isn't normal - but we are waiting for data on the second one (which may prove this grounding is needed) --- but let's also be real, Indonesian airlines having accidents due to bad maintenance / pilots isn't really that abnormal either. If the initial investigation in Indonesia wasn't pointing to maintenance and pilot error as the causes of the crash, I might agree with you. That investigation was months old and the preliminary report did not blame the aircraft. Now we'll see the new data that led to today's FAA grounding - that could change everything potentially.I would. The pilots still are. That's the biggest indicator to me. The pilot union and the lack of pilots breaking rank to call the plane out. Sure there were a few things lodged in a database, but Southwest and its pilots aren't going to do something it thinks might kill passengers.

new data coming in is of interest. We'll see what happened in Ethiopia and what caused the change of heart here. I sort of think Boeing wants to ground them now so it can return them to service as "safe" (even though Boeing continues to say and believe the aircraft is airworthy). Probably the best way to restore faith in the aircraft given the media hysteria. You're talking about an aircraft though that Southwest has had 41k flights on, United and American have a ton of hours on it too. Those pilot unions were supporting keeping the 737 MAX in operation. If the pilot unions were throwing a fit, I'd be raising an eyebrow. We'll see if there's a systemic issue. I still highly doubt it.

yeah the news is going to report anything that happens. Pilots deal with all sorts of stuff. Varying conditions, wind, maintenance issues etc. That's why they are there. I mean, read the full article and the plane immediately alerted them and they fixed it. It's not related to the Indonesia incident, and even then you're talking a descent rate of 1200-1500 ft per minute, which is a high descent rate but isn't like plummeting to earth. (also like 2 instances in that NASA database in what, like 40,000-50,000 North American flights? Southwest has flown 30k+ MAX flights already).

Things break on airplanes all the time. All. The. Time. That’s why they check and maintain them. That’s why they have procedures and checklists for what you do if it breaks mid air and redundancies. Those procedures are how the previous flights dealt with the issues. What you don’t do is keep flying something that is known to be broken.

Thread Airlines beginning to ground Boeing 737-Max following Ethiopian Airline crash
Yet one of those planes basically shoulda been either out of service due to known faulty AoA sensors or would not have crashed had the checklist been followed (as the flight crew previous to the one that crashed did) - which would’ve defeated MCAS. The second cause is yet unknown. That’s where we are at. Lion Air would love to pin the first crash on Boeing, and rumoredly is going all airbus to try and continue that perception in Indonesia, but the final report seems likely to pin it on maintainence (surprise surprise with Lion) and maybe partially pilot error.

This isn't even remotely new, and is yet to be proved as an issue. See the DC-10 for something similar that happened in the past that actually DID have a major design issue.. DC-10s still fly. This is more on crappy domestic carriers which decide the interior specs of their aircraft. My by far preferred long-haul aircraft these days is a Boeing 787. (the A350 is nice too). The only definite similarities are that it was the same aircraft and both were on take-off. Until we have more info, that's a big conclusion to jump to.

There were multiple points of failure --- this is somewhat conjecture until the final report is issued but: -Lion Air didn't take the jet out of service, despite knowing the AoA sensors were malfunctioning when reported by previous flight crews -The pilots on the flight that crashed didn't follow the checklist that would have disabled that system. You could argue that they should've been made more aware of MCAS, but at the end of the day, it's not a single point of failure. There's all sorts of things that can fail on an aircraft, and procedures for how to deal with it. Previous flight crews did deal with it, and it should've been fixed before flying again.

why are people taking a comment on the NYT so seriously? It's all conjecture that it was suits and cost-saving and not clever engineering and using the power of computer and computer modeling. the vast majority of the 737 MAXs are still flying today because the airlines and pilots involved believe the aircraft to be safe. Just keep in mind even if there is an issue. Just look up the DC-10 (Cargo door) -- it got fixed, the planes kept flying.

Yes it would. It’s ultimately all supply and demand at the end of it basic Econ 101. I actually remember back when sony first party didn’t do price drops until greatest hits, Heavenly Sword was 60 for like 2+ years but hardly sold at all on NPD, meanwhile GameStop was just selling it used for like 30 or something. GameStop May have made more money on the game than the devs or publisher did. You’re right it’s not the only reason, generally lagging sales velocity or excess units in channel are the other reason (Tho price protection can hurt here). Nintendo generally doesn’t suffer from those issues tho with it’s high-end evergreen titles, so the only thing that could force them down is the used market undercutting them, which doesn’t happen. It’s rare games that sell the quantity that Nintendo’s games sell, can hold their price point. GTA is really the other Example from this era of gaming.

It’s not flawed really. No one has any idea how much revenue GameStop allocates to GI per subscription (if anything). 6 million print + web = plenty of ad revenue too. It’s folly to think that a big media company isn’t looking at a magazine with 6 million circulation, the web presence and the prestige GI has, and isn’t thinking they can find a way to monetize that. It could just as easily be bought by a media company who then strikes a deal with Best Buy to provide it to Their customers, etc I’m not saying GI will stay as large as it is, but to think it’s just going to vanish is insane. GI is far too valuable and an actually successful part of their business

also like, in the 80s - we had no other options - you didn't have a ton of channels and movies. VHS was still expensive many times. My first ever glimpse of SW was like when I was 3-4, and the movie was airing on broadcast TV and my mom's extended family was all in the basement watching it. the first time I got to watch the whole movie, it was a VHS rental from the library. now within years we had marathons on TBS and VHS was ubiquitous, but we didn't have Marvel CInematic universe or anything. Having Star Trek: The Next Generation and a few other shows and movies was all sci-fi nerds really had outside of books and comics. There was a time where the A-List talent would turn their nose up at sci-fi stuff (Star Wars was an exception), instead of the present-day universe where the A-Listers appear in comic series and Star Wars and fantasy. Anyways, Star Wars is USDA Prime fantasy/sci-fi special effects entertainment, and it was better than anything else out there. Maybe now there are many other options of similar quality... And I'm a youngin. people 15-20 years older than me experienced ANH in theatres and if you talk to them about it, it was the most mind-blowing thing they had ever seen at the time.

But folks who primarily watch news channels may want to be careful. And people should ensure they are off vivid mode as the brighter the display the faster it’ll burn. My E6 has been used for CNN, YouTube, all sorts of games, and tons and tons of ESPN and sports, and exhibits nothing. I’d also advise you if you don’t see any issues with your OLED to not go looking for them with static slides, cause you’ll then no where issues are and always start looking for it. They couldn’t split votes in a meaningful way If they voted 4 Christian, 3 someone else, then the 5 David’s could win without an idol. 5-2 split would allow David’s to still vote 3-2 with an idol and either get someone (like we saw) or force a tie. In fact, the David’s likely picked the 3-2 split in case the Goliath’s went 5-2, and hit John as a target they wouldn’t play an idol on.

eh it was both. you'd get debug builds for long-lead reviews, but lots of publishers sent plenty of final copies out. so I'd have the disc to write the review off, but come a release day or just prior, a box would show up with a copy of the game on each platform.

the alliance of 6 is playing correctly by allowing the rest of the tribe to select targets that are beneficial for them. they didn't trust Elizabeth (nor should they have), and are laying low to ensure it's too late for people to act once they are revealed. This gives the other Goliaths a false sense of confidence as the first couple Davids are picked off.

honestly if you aren't finding shines... you just need to completely change your strategy. If you want Shinys, this is a game of encounters. If the community day rate is 1 / 25 - then it follows you want to try and encounter 25 x Y - where Y equals the number of Shinies you want. But assuming you are in a city --- You need to move fast and encounter as many Beldums as you can. Parks, high density Pokestop areas, etc. Fire up incense, team up and use a vehicle, etc. You goal shouldn't be to catch anything besides except shinies until you're satisfied with Shinies you have or you know for sure you have a second to catch that Beldum. But time spent catching non-shinies = time spent not finding shinies. I get for rural players it could be a lot rougher, I'd probably lure up pokestops and use incense to try and get as many spawns by me as possible. I caught 5 shiny in an hour and called it a morning.

so some things here: -This is super major and dramatic, when was the last time you heard of a country arresting basically the whole top brass of its intelligence service because of a botched opp? -If you think Saudi Arabia wanted this, no --- they were trying to pretend nothing happened or it was something else entirely --- Turkey has been forcing the hand of both Saudi Arabia and the US, because it had the the Saudi consulate wired. That ammo has been leaked out at damaging points to increase Turkey's leverage. -Saudi Arabia and its allies need something to show justice has been done - and now they have arrested 18 involved, and uh, bad things happen when you're arrested for Murder in the Kingdom. -Likely, both Saudi Arabia and the USA have capitulated to Turkish demands on some things, and they'll be getting some wonderful parting gifts to shut up and keep the tape under wraps. If there are further leaks, then you know Turkey isn't happy. And yes everyone knows it's BS because the Prince had to have known, but he'll claim deniability, blame the underlings who will likely be executed for this., Turkey gets concessions because the Saudi Intelligence was incompetent enough to allow their consulate to be bugged and to commit a murder there, and the US can claim justice was done in Saudi Arabia and the murderers were dealt with by the Saudi justice system.

Don't know how much that would get them... The movie theatre isn't going anywhere. The iFly stuff on the other side of the theatre is over by the studio tour area so not that useful. So yeah, maybe by completely re-doing the entrance, taking out Westworld / Parking lot / Saddle Ranch, you could squeeze some more in. It wouldn't even get you anything the size of Hogsmeade tho. Really only one theme park ever has done something that crazy to it's entrance (DCA), but it has been done.

Yeah Seahawks are one of the "omg on fire" NFL markets, along with Cowboys, Packers, and Patriots. Those tickets are all obscenely priced on the secondary market. San Francisco would be similar if they were good, and if the 49ers hadn't taken all the meat off the bone with the PSL and high game pricing. Also folks those charts above don't show VIP / Club seating for Rams/Chargers, which are ridiculous ($350 per game, plus 5-6 figure PSLs)

Thread NFL owners already discussing Chargers’ viability in LA, expected revenue down from $400m to $150m
as a Chargers season ticket holder (well, for now... probably dropping my Carson tickets after this year) - it's pretty bad. They gravely miscalculated going the "hyper premium" route with the soccer stadium. You need to make new fans here in LA. The Rams played in a cavern that was super cheap (literally tickets were worthless at the end of 2016), and then got good. LA also hasn't figured out just how good the Chargers are yet (spoiler: very). So it may shift if they continue their run here down the stretch. But back to my point - the season ticket prices aren't bad considering they only have 100/200 level tickets, but the resale has been terrible even at those prices. Supposedly VIP / Club level seats weren't selling at all. Their just released full stadium seat chart is HYPER cheap. The upper levels have a PSL price of $100. That's basically a 10 dollar surcharge per game on your first season. By far cheaper than the Rams (nose bleed PSL is $1000. 50 yard line upper deck is $4000 PSL). If they can tank the concession prices (Falcons style) they can play as the "family alternative" in LA and they might be able to make it work. Regardless, it won't be the big bucks they were expecting, and it'll be the classic situation of being the Clippers to the Rams' Lakers.

The Slinky coaster? Lol How is Hollywood Studios a full day Park? With proper fastpss usage I cannot imagine spending more than 6 hours there. I definitely will swing by 2-3 times in a week trip to hit the rides on fastpass, but the standby lines are just horrific for the major rides because there is so little to do in the park. I suppose if you actually wait another 75-90 minutes for a second ride on Midway Mania you can blow your day there, but my general philosophy is to avoid long standby waits - I’m on vacay!! I’d rather visit Hollywood Studios 2-3 times for 3-4 hours each on a trip, before heading to EPCOT or Magic Kingdom, than spend one full day there

Thread Going to Disney in October! How do I prepare?
I mean you’re leaving at 1, even with another 90 minutes in Toy Story land we are talking 2:30? It’s just not even close right now. My example of a park that’s starting to become a full day park would be Animal Kingdom or Hong Kong Disney, both of which are can be stretched with two sit down meals and multiple shows into doing it. I really like the E-Tickets at Hollywood Studios. Tower of Terror is a masterpiece and Rock’N was the best coaster they had built until Everest. But that park is basically the second worst Disney park in the world, which still puts it heads and shoulders over the worst Disney Park in the world. Given the overcrowding (aka the constant SW Marketing) - you can spend a full day there waiting in line - but I find it far more efficient to treat it as a half day park at best to use fast-passes and single rider lines in - while getting in and out. Star Wars Land (and maybe the Mickey Ride) will change everything of course, but again, fastpasses will be your huckleberry there

100% you want a park hopper due to being right by EPCOT. I mean - here’s the thing, outside of Magic Kingdom none of the parks are full day. I prefer Epcot and the World Showcase for dinner. Hollywood Studios has essentially four rides (Midway Mania, Star Tours, Tower of Terror, Rock n roller coaster) and maybe you see the Indiana Jones show (Fastpss three rides and use single rider for Rock’n), Animal Kingdom is now nearing full day status with night time shows, lighting and Pandora, but even that if you get there early to knock out Pandora you probably are done by mid afternoon even with a sit down lunch. So you wanna be able to jump around at will, use fastpasses to skip lines, and have time to relax and eat. I don’t think you need a meal plan either but some people like those and manage to extract value. Oh one more recommendation is he new Jungle Cruise Skipper canteen in Magic Kingdom, really fun vibe, I also like Liberty Tree Tavern for food in MK. There’s also a fun mini golf course near Dolphin/Swan that Inthinn you could walk to from the Yacht Club

take advantage of your location to eat in Epcot at night. -Le Cellier is my favorite (steakhouse, Canada) -the food at the french restaurant is good too, Morocco not bad. British pub is solid too for British food (the sticky toffee pudding!). -Animal Kingdom has great eats, Tiffins inside the park is great, Jiko and Sanaa at the resort there are good too -Enjoy the resorts! There are fun things there. Do Breakfast and get Tonga Toast at the Kona Cafe in the Polynesian -Hollywood Studios is a place for fastpasses and bailing - don't plan a full day there, -The ice cream shop Beaches I think, I think at the Yacht Club - has some insane ice cream sundaes, my favorite is the one with toasted banana bread and peanut butter As others said - hit up Fastpasses ASAP, esp for Pandora, 7 Dwarves, etc. If you need 7 Dwarves help - an early reservation at Be Our Guest for Breakfast will let you get behind the rope drop and be first in the standby line as long as you eat fast and get back out. Learn which rides have single rider Check the app a TON for people who release fast passes. Gotten some killer ones (Mine Cart, Space Mountain) by just checking a lot Definitely just uber to and from Universal, though it may be worth it to stay your last night there at a nicer resort that gives you front of line for most of the place (not Harry Potter), but also early access (for Harry Potter). You can do both of those parks in 1 day with front of line, tho it's a very busy day.

I do agree that in general, the 4K to 1080P jump, for TV/movies, isn't that gigantic compared to going from CRT 480i TVs (or worse) to suddenly fixed-pixel 720p/1080i displays. the combined jump of 4K and Dolby Vision though, combined with displays that can showcase that, absolutely crushes the 1080p TVs and blu-rays we had. I think for the first time in the home viewing environment you can really get true cinema look... it's especially noticeable on good 4K film scans/masters. Just really incredible stuff. Gebbia quit the team and is transferring today, if he hits a school on the trimester system (aka UCLA) he can likely make this his transfer year and still have 3 to play 3. The other QB transfer from UCF is ineligible this season, so Frost has a true frosh, a walk on, and some dude at QB in an offense that has been known to go through QBs. I'd be more shocked by them only winning 5, then I would by them winning 8 or 9. I think 7 or 8 wins seems right, 6 could happen, 9 could happen, 10 or 5 would be shocking to me. Some people are trying to say his suit texture is gone too - but I've pulled it up and it's still there, it's just bad video compression combined with the motion blur at that moment (being compared to a slowdown moment in the original trailer). We've shown what, an hour of footage in the last 2 months (maybe a bit less) and the game still looks as spectacular as it did when we showed it (it actually looks better, really) - so I don't get that downgrade talk.

Still got 25 days to launch, this is just the first shot. There's new stuff coming too. But you also have to keep in mind that stuff is now moving to a mass audience stage where we will repeat some of our favorite shots - because just like movies do - you don't want to show everything, so you mix old and new. It's very strategic. What do you want more info on? There's DLC included and we'll share more as we get closer to launch. New story missions, challenges, characters, and suits in each one, and the three form an inter-connected story. Black Cat is a featured character in the first one.

yeah look - at this point, you begin reaching the point of trying not to spoil yourself. The official stuff should all be pretty sanitized and we have a large bed of footage to work from, but you'll see new bits sprinkled in. That said, between copies that work their way off trucks, or reviews (which while you can ask them to flag certain elements, and ask them to not discuss some things... it's a little unfair to over do this because they need to be able to discuss the game and characters etc) - there will be stuff out there that we would rather you experience when you play the game the first time, and this is already the case. So be careful (on the Spider-Man PS4 Reddit in particular), and even in here, where people have posted spoilers as "theories" and other stuff underneath spoiler buttons. And be cool and don't spoil it for others!

I still think A Crack in Time is some of our best story work in telling a relatable and heartfelt story, but this may eclipse that for me, personally. All that said, the hardcore Spidey fans should find tons of stuff for them. I really can't wait for people to experience it. now don't quote me on this - but I believe there is a secondary file that's downloading that is the unlock file. I think you just have to delete that file from the game files on the system. Just like how the physical edition would check for that file that people download by putting in the pre-order code. I'm 90% sure this is how it works, so if you download the game, then check the files and delete the pre-order unlock, you're set.

pretty sure we always just said "summer" there's basically no risk to you here though you'll have to do a little more work to see it: 1. You wait until the week before launch cause surely someone will open a box and photo the statue etc. Plenty of time to change mind. 2. You wait until launch day when in NZ/Australia, surely someone will photo / video the statue, you can return / cancel your pre-order etc (or just re-sell on eBay for $$$$) 3. You open it and don't like it, and again, can re-sell the statue on the bay - worst case you still have a physical copy, all the DLC, and everything else from the CE you already wanted. 4. You decide not to take the risk / or try to find an early image, and just cancel or re-sell it now. It's Gentle Giant, we worked heavily with them on it, it's super cool in my opinion, it's worth not spoiling or making a big deal out of before launch and accidentally spoiling part of the game. If you're really worried, there's plenty of options as we get in close to mitigate that risk given the insane demand for it.

I'll be talking to folks when I'm back in the States late next week and trying to decide what the formal answer is. Suffice to say though, the story stuff in the preview build, with playing just a little bit of side stuff is about 2.5 hours. That's with hardly any other activities unlocked. I think in 4-5 hours, people were level 7-8 (out of 50). 2.5 hours is barely scratching the surface here.

Korea took us out to a traditional Korean course meal that was incredible. They didn't want me to try this dish that was basically combining kimchi with fermented pork and fermented fish. They thought I would gag. But I love fermented (and spicy) food, and Koreatown in LA is one of my favorite places thanks to Jonathan Gold (RIP), so I impressed them by eating and loving everything there. Japan's food is always delicious, ate well there. had dumplings and hot pot in Taiwan, Sichuanese and Cantonese food in Hong Kong, plus high tea a couple times. Overall the trip has been terrific. I'd say getting to get reactions from people who have finally now played a couple hours of the game and gotten to see the story and what's actually going on is really cool. Have had some great conversations and interviews with Australian press the last couple days. But from a touristy point of view- riding Mystic Manor at Hong Kong Disneyland was a highlight, for sure. Marvel approached Sony, wanting them to do one of their characters right with a big first-party story game. They wanted to work with one of the developers Sony FP works with frequently, and even mentioned us by name to Sony as a developer who they felt particularly fit. So for a fan blade to fracture, go through the titanium engine shroud, and then through two layers of window and strike the woman, all in a 500mph slip stream of air, is just a hyper freaky unfortunate accident. In terms of other passengers, you’d have an immediate pop of depressurization, it’s not a “air sucking out” thing like you see in movies. Masks deploy. So you’ve got a bang, some loud noise, people freaking out, masks dropping, relatively scary. The plane made a pretty rapid descent, going from 30,000 to 10,000 in about 5 minutes. This is normally a 20-30 minute process for comfort. That said, if the captain has it under control and has an engine, you’re pretty good. But everyone in my family is pilots and I fly all the time, so I would like to think I’d stay calm here. Now - if I had been on the US Airways flight Sully landed in the Hudson? That shit was freak me out And honestly, the Southwest Flight that flew into the thunderstorm in New Orleans is something that would scare me more than losing an engine.

if you're talking about the pilot that flew into that Thunderstorm over New Orleans - that incident may actually end up being "worse" --- not from a loss of life perspective, of course, but because it was a bad decision by a pilot to take the aircraft into that storm... versus this which may have just been a freak, and unavoidable, accident.

Thread Southwest passenger injured midflight by engine shrapnel, partially sucked out of plane [UP: 1 dead]
Hmm, I don't like heights either, but aircraft heights make it impossible to really tell how high you are, if that makes sense. Jumping out of a plane was like, well, what's the difference between 100 feet and 13000 feet? It basically is a myth. It would require a catastrophic failure of the fuselage to have people "blown out" of the plane. The pressurization difference isn't large enough to create that suction, it's a big "pop" and that's it. Now certainly, 400-500mph windspeed outside that window will create some mild suction, and a lot of noise and stuff. But a window blowing out couldn't suck an adult passenger out, especially one wearing a seat-belt

Thread Southwest passenger injured midflight by engine shrapnel, partially sucked out of plane [UP: 1 dead]
Really curious as to cause of death here. The physics of this shouldn’t allow anyone to really be “sucked out”. The plane depressuriZation is basically instant. Now the external airspeed could mean that part of the passengers body could’ve been immediately outside, head or arm or whatever, causing serious injury. (Imagine sticking your hand outside your car window at that speed, etc). But assuming the passenger was seatbelted, I don’t think they could’ve been actually pulled out. You also could understand the terror of the situation causing a heart attack or something too as well as the possibility for injury given the violent damage to the window If you know these engines, they are incredibly reliable and they know when they will fail based on the data from them. This is a catastrophic failure for the titanium casing to not hold the shrapnel. Very curious what happened there too. That said, the airframe itself should’ve never been in jeopardy from it. The 737 can land no problem on one engine, the oxygen masks did their job while the plane descended to safe Altitude.

yeah, I think that 500k number is one scenario. You have to evaluate your individual situation. Say you're already maxing retirement out or something, but perhaps haven't done as good at saving cash, or live in a state where property values make it difficult to get a down payment where you might need (esp in a competitive market). You have plenty of income and can easily afford the mortgage, but need cash to get a loan. You might find it makes sense. (of course it could also put you into a cash-strapped / house-poor situation...) The real key is understand what the portfolio looks like with that money coming out of it, the long-term effects, as well as the effects on your cash flow to be paying that back each month. If you understand all of the dynamics (and that may require running numbers YOURSELF, rather than just seeing what some auto thing spits out at you) - you can make a much more informed decision.

yeah it's your funds, you should be able to roll it out of there. Contact the 401k administrator (Fidelity or whoever) and figure out the roll over process. Others here will have advice, but it's likely best to set it up as an independently managed IRA (ie, don't roll it over into your new company --- you'll likely have far better choices in a non corporate sponsored plan). That said, if it's a small amount and it that isn't worth the hassle, you very likely can roll it into your current 401k plan at your current employer.

I mean, you're ultimately right at some level --- people invest in a company (buying the initial shares, or buying shares on the secondary (aka, Stock), market) because they believe in the business, believe their investment will be returned to them (growth in the company, or return of profits via dividend). But it's not pure speculation, as others before me noted, there's a lot of metrics to value companies. Now, you can argue that companies may be overvalued right now on the stock market in general, and that some speculation is trading at a higher level. Of course, in 2008, many companies were UNDER-valued. So it's normal ebbs and flows. At the end of the day you own a sliver of an entity that is using that money (intrinsically, since the share you own means you own a piece of that company) - to try and create more wealth / money. That's why you buy them, because they put your money to work for you. There's tons of details about how companies and shares are valued, how to price shares, etc.

Thread Isn't this what most people were mad at Microsoft about?
Your post clearly had a console war agenda from your subject to how you worded it, hence the reaction you're getting. It had nothing to do with being confused as what it was, but rather, a chance to imply it was something that it was not, which you did heavily in a console war fashion.

at the time, I think that might've been true? (I honestly don't know) but that said, all I know is that Microsoft's engineering team, to pull off what they did in re-engineering the whole system architecture and DRM in the timeframe that they did it, is nothing short of a miracle. The technical achievement they pulled off there was something that got overlooked in all of that. So props to those dudes

This is the exact same thing that can happen if you play a game on a non-primary Xbox as well. Non-primary consoles must remain signed in to play digital games. OP has no clue what they are talking about.

yeah, most of the spawns I've seen reported have been like after 10-11pm or like 5-6am. I'm going to Japan, SE Asia, Australia and New Zealand over the next few weeks so hopefully can load up on Torkoal (tho Go Fest will probably tank his North American value) and Relicanth

1. Tropius 2. Relicanth And Relicanth is a close second. In LA, I'd say Torkoal 3rd, Volbeat 4th, and Mime 5th. Lunatone was up there is, and is still desirable because it's such a rare spawn and spawns at odd hours In LA Kanga is kinda meh since it spawned in Anaheim for a weekend so most players have them

Show is terrific. Cancelled CBS All Access until it's back. But happy to pay and support it and show CBS I want more by turning on and off when it has new episodes. Also I love that it's weekly for discussion purposes vs binging

The Inverted L to multitask works for me 100% of the time. The upper corner thing is a little rough for control center The app killing thing makes sense, generally you don’t need to kill apps in iOS

coming from 7+. it's a little bit narrower. So it feels a touch cramped on the horizontal. Height isn't an issue overall. Feels a little smaller, but it's ok. Maybe not quite as good for comics or reading

Thread E3 2018: Game Critics Awards Winners
No, none of the Judges could play Cyberpunk 2077, so it wasn't eligible. Well the nominees were different so the votes breakdown differently. In Best Console game, Dreams or AC:O could've had votes that ended up going to RE2 in Best of Show (where AC:O and Dreams weren't nominated). Likewise, votes for Spider-Man could've been siphoned off by Anthem in the Best of Show vote.

I’m pretty pleased with the combined 7.3 million combined views of the Spider-Man showcase and demo footage, not even including all the crazy views on some of the off-screen stuff

I think it’s right and here’s why: 2 videos basically in the Top 30. The showcase and open world videos combine for 6.5 million views (combined #5) - with super high L/D ratio. Plus, there’s a metric ton of offsceeen footage out there. I saw a video that solely showed the world from the top of the Empire State Building and it had 250k views. I’ll pull numbers next week but across all platforms and all E3 2018 Spidey videos, the view count will be just as staggering as last year’s.
