It’s insane that this is happening. I wish I could bring over my character (Taylor Swift), but I’m looking forward to see what onboarding is like in 2019. I tried to log back in and play last year, but it’s changed so much that I was lost. Hopefully, rolling a new toon will teach me where we’re at now.

Thread Greg Miller and Andrea Rene handwave Notch and PewDiePie racist, transphobic and anti-semitic behaviour (UP: Greg Miller responds; see threadmark)
I feel like we're in a much better place here at the (current) end of the thread, but I saw this video pop up in the conversation a way back and I didn't want it to be forgotten. I saw someone respond to the video with "...yikes, that was bad." That bit isn't bad; that bit is horrendous. When Polygon did that piece on me last year, , and my responses are as true now as they were then: I know a lot of people here don't watch my content or know much about me. If there's one thing I'd like you to take away, it's that I'm all about the journey to being a better person. As this week has shown, it's on-going and never-ending. On my podcasts, I try to lead by example. When someone calls something "gay" in a letter, I stop the show and we talk about it. Rather than rage, I tell the story of my first gay friend and how he pulled me aside when he heard me say it one day during freshman year. When we talk about being sensitive to disabilities, I tell the story of when AbleGamers' Steve Spohn called me on the phone to talk about a line I accidentally crossed at PAX. I've fucked up a lot, but I learn from the fuck ups, and it's made me the person I am today, and I like that guy. This Camilla story is another example of all that. I'm not proud when I talk about it; I'm ashamed of it and wish it had never happened. It's influenced choices I make on camera to this day, and hopefully me talking about what a stupid, insensitive choice it was stops someone else from making a similar stupid, insensitive choice. (EDITED: Expanded on an "it's" so you understood what "it" is.)

This is eye-opening for me. "Be better to each other" started and -- 99 percent of the time -- is applied to people bickering about video games. I completely get what you're saying in these instances and how trying to apply that to horrible people doesn't work. I'll be more careful with when I bust that out and what I mean by it. Thanks!

That's the new challenge I was talking about in my second big post. I started all of this to talk about games, that evolved into a platform, and that's evolved into meaning more to people than just games, wings, and cancer. The social issue message has always been "don't be a fucking asshole," but that clearly needs to be more nuanced and pointed at times. Thank you for the input!

Oh dear. That's DEFINITELY not what I mean (which it sounds like you know). I guess it's the trouble with speaking to my small audience and having them "know" me so well. Do you have suggestions on how I could craft the same message for a wider audience?

Hey, everyone-- Sorry for not making it back yesterday. This is the first time I've sat at a computer since posting Tuesday night. Someone pointed out above that the discussion is anchored to Era, so I could probably just leave and never come back. That's not my way. All I have is my authenticity. I don't mind talking and learning. Thank you for continuing the conversation here. There are a lot of posts here that really help me out, and I think shine a light on what went wrong Monday because, believe it or not, we agree: fuck bigots and racists. Where we got off track Monday on the show comes down to "privilege." Many of you have echoed the same thought on here that's basically "How the fuck can Greg NOT know all this shit about PDP/Notch." The answer is pretty simple: when you say dumb shit on the Internet and you're just on the peripheral of my world (another influencer/some retired dev), I go "Well, you're dumb" and ignore you. That's privilege. I haven't had to fight for my rights, my identity, or my life. I identify my job as keeping Kinda Funny going, critiquing games, and keeping up with gaming news when it comes to titles/developers/etc. As such, it's easy to not click on Julia Alexander's headlines about YouTube personalities fucking up and keep looking for info on Game Pass. That's privilege, and frankly, it's not one I've had to think about until this week. If you watch Kinda Funny, you know that I preach "be better to each other," but beyond my one on one interactions, I'm still trying to figure out what that means. 2018 saw me acknowledge that I have a platform and that I need to be better about using it. I brought on smaller creators and tried to highlight minority voices. To me, everything we're talking about is another aspect of that, and it's one that I need to learn. Monday saw me try to get a handle on two stories that intersected with *my* gaming world and the world I've seen headlines about but haven't focused on. That's not OK. My responsibilities are greater than that. I gotta go record the Gamescast, but after that, I'll pop back in to respond to some more comments. Greg

Hey, LebGuns-- I'm sorry that you walked away from this episode thinking that I didn't take a stand on this. I'd hope that my past efforts on all of these issues would speak to my stance on them, but if they haven't, let me be clear: fuck being a bigot. In the episode, I say never say the N-word, I say that Notch seems like an asshole, and I echo the message I've said on so many shows of "be better to each other." If that wasn't clear, I missed the mark and failed at being the man I want to be. End of story. The conversation I was trying to have Monday wasn't “Why does the internet got to be so complicated when people get successful?” in regards to people who use the n-word. Fuck that. That's simple. It was more "How is this a lesson people have to learn in 2019?" But again, that didn't ring true to you. I'm sorry. I hope you know how much your comments mean to me. That goes for everyone here. Please, don't hesitate to tag me in posts about my content or ask me questions online. Talking to you is what my career is based on -- it's why I used You're Wrong (the live submission section of Kinda Funny Games Daily) in this episode to get the input from viewers about the side of the story I was missing. I don't know it all. I try not to act like I know it all, but I don't mean for that to come off as if I don't care about or shrug at bigotry. Greg

You’re joking — to some extent — but you’re entirely wrong. Usually, I leave a preview event and know if a game is or isn't for me. Days Gone and Mass Effect Andromeda are the two biggest exceptions in my career. The game's big problem -- which I'm about to dive into on the Gamescast -- is that it isn't rewarding (systems, gameplay, time). That's impossible to know in the preview. But that said, I still should've tempered my expectations more. I just thought they had it, you know?

The combat here is so one note. With the exception of endgame and Hordes, you can just melee, which I didn’t find enjoyable as it makes it glaringly obvious how bad the AI is.

Thread Patrick Klepek: "Writing about VR is a giant waste of time" (in terms of website business)
Hey-- He's right. I mean, Kinda Funny is small potatoes, but when I would do Let's Plays for PSVR, they would under-perform (some exceptions). That's why I'm doing (I swear this isn't a plug) The PlayStation VR Show now. It's eight episodes, and because there's a Patreon incentive, I don't have to worry as much about views. It's a trial to see if our audience wants more of this than the last time we did it. I think part of it stems from the passion behind the personality as well. PSX and the 2018 PSVR schedule really did get me re-invested in PSVR and give me a reason to go back to the games I've missed. Hopefully, that narrative is shared by enough people to get them to watch and keep it going. I think the more niche the outlet, the better chance for success. Greg

Great question. We see this as us carrying a torch and providing a service to the industry we love. As such, we didn't think a sponsor or ads made sense. So, no ads or sponsors. This is to celebrate games and get the word out about some titles that could get lost in the sea of news out there. HOWEVER, if this turns into something we do again and again, we'll probably end up sponsoring it down the line. We thought this was going to be a helping hand, one-time thing, but there seems to be a need here, so who knows what the future holds! Plus, it's an incredible amount of work, and after planning our small Showcase, I've never had so much respect for Geoff and what he does with the Game Awards. :D
