Thread Phil Spencer will join IGN Unlocked podcast. Will go live today arround noon pacfic time
Yea for sure, the IGN Unfiltered podcast is targeted towards regular people. I think of it more as a casual conversation between journalist and someone working in the industry, than something more educational. More for the "back in my days" stories. :D I would love a podcast that goes into the details of how and why we couldn't get game clients to connect to game servers, only after 3 days of investigations by technical directors and software engineers, to notice that a change back in 2016 broke some parts of the pipeline that told our backends which items the clients should load and which items the servers should load, an issue that would only happen on a completely new map with only terrain and no additional assets or logic on it, but not a lot of people would be interested in learning about that insanity. :p

Finished the game. Probably the best FPS singleplayer game I've ever played. Need to take a break from gaming for a day or two just to rest. Seeing some people ask why some would keep a sub constantly. I have Office 365 Home. I share it with my parents and my sister. This gives us all the Office products which I don't use by my family does all the time, and 5 TBs of storage space. The 5 TBs alone are worth the sub. Office may as well come as a bonus.

Thread DOOM Eternal |OT| Hell's Bells
It basically requires you to move and dash all the time. Also, if you get meleed, you will probably die from 2 or so hits. So you cannot allow anything to get close to you. There have been many times when I would get sandwiched between two enemies that I didn't see, only to die in a second. Most enemies can kill you in 3-5 hits depending on their power, even if you are fully maxed out. The Slayer gates are really, really challenging, especially if you do them at the time you find them (which is honestly the best time to do them, as it is the most hectic fun). And as difficult as it sounds, you cannot hold back. If you find yourself on low health, your best option is to dash forward into enemies, trying to stagger them and then melee them for that HP. Playing carefully would only result in you wasting time and dying more.

Played through the singleplayer, loved it. Played through the multiplayer in Arcade only, for about 10 hours, loved it, but I had enough. What is this Sentinel Armor thing? Playing on Nightmare, my strategy was to burst their armour with the Plasma Rifle, then use the Heavy Cannon to attach all missiles and switch to the Super Shotgun for a heavy punch. Usually that combo, coupled with the overcharge explosion from the Plasma Rifle takes away at least 30% of their health, if not more. Also, never stop moving!

I'm not sure how the save game part would work, but from what I can tell, the story takes place after the end of the main game. It's also very obvious which part the DLC is located in, as it has it's own map and all that. The name itself gives it away.

They also wouldn't know until the public knows. Since Sony is a publicly traded company, any significant business impacting shifts must be announced at the same time to internal people, as to the public. Otherwise, you run the risk of people doing insider trading and then going to jail for it.

Yea for sure, that would be nice. We started up some initiatives recently regarding standards across our games as a company, which will improve and standardise things a bit more. Yea, of course. A bit different focus right now, though, we're trying to get the STT and TTS underlying backend technologies set up, for example, something that would benefit all of our future games. There are so many things one could do, it comes down to prioritisation, and that's our focus for now. I think at this point we have fully adjustable everything we can think of in BFV, but I am sure that we are not covering everything. Funny enough, we added some massive improvements around customisability of deadzones and trigger pressures based on some feedback from this forum. The presentation could indeed use some improvements, no doubt about that.

Thread Bungie: Google Stadia an "amazing solution" for playtesting during lockdown
Funny enough, it usually is most likely that the users (devs) of said third party services that increase the risk, not the services themselves. People may forget to log out of some place, or leave something up and running for others to see, or use their personal accounts for some activities. Could be so many things. :D I'm sure Stadia as a platform is perfectly trustworthy. Are the fairly new users that would have to switch to using it for confidential work trustworthy though? Not necesarely because of malicious reasons, but mistakes happen.

It's a good alternative to use if you already have a Linux game client, but if you don't, super hard to justify making one right now during these times. Luckily we have the studio infrastructure in a really good shape so we don't have to use third party hosting platforms. The amount of risk they add is quite big.

Thread Playing Diablo III for the first time...
The difficulty of the game has changed drastically since release. On release everything was compressed in 4 difficulties. And you had to finish one to unlock the other. Progression was pushing with a character from difficulty to difficulty. Now there are about 20 difficulties, and each one brings more benefits if you can manage to stay alive and farm efficiently. The main story is now about the story itself. The progression of the game starts shining when you reach the end game. A very different approach. :) The art style of Diablo 3 is much more varied that the bleak one of 1 and 2. The beginning of New Tristram is about the dead rising, then you get the skeleton-filled Cathedral. From then on you move into highlands-like mountains and places. After which you descent into the horribly-bloody dungeon of the Butcher. Sorry for the very small spoilers, but just wanted to present how much more varied the world is.

They had that initially. The Inferno difficulty was very punishing. But the community overall complained a lot about it, and eventually they decided to stretch out everything into more difficulties. I still remember getting stomped hard by Elites on Inferno with the Vortex, Teleport and a couple of other affixes. If randomness turned against you, there were times when your best option was to cry in a corner.

Thread At what point do you agree that AI should gain similar rights to humans or animals?
Fascinating question. One that is difficult to answer. Would that point be when AI starts pondering about its existence, starts understanding its consciousness and learns that it has subconsciousness that is sometimes driving the seemingly logical decision it makes? Which in turn would be a question for us. How do we, as humans, define what is an AI that is aware of its consciousness? How do we distinguish between an infinite number of logical decision an AI makes, and decisions driven by what seems to be that AI's subconsciousness? We won't have one without the other. As AI's understanding of existence forms and grows, our understanding of artificial life would have to grow and evolve.

The best answer that I can give you on this is that we will have to wait for the consoles to be released to do performance testing. :) It will highly depend on what parts of a game are being done using raytracing, if it is only shadows or only lighting or only ambient occlusion or only whatever, or everything, or nothing. Very hard to tell until we have playable experiences released publicly.

People do care. It is easy to create audio that is okay, that passes the "this is functional" bar. Perhaps it is not a selling point, but incredible audio directly helps keep people thinking more about the game they've played even after they've stopped playing it.

Most games are usually built with the lowest common denominator in mind. And both console platforms did not have SSD support, thus you were not seeing much of a gain apart from faster loading assets into memory and faster content reading. Thread COVID-19 could accelerate the death/shrinking of retail games
Look at it this way. Let's take Sweden for example. The people that buy digital only, won't be affected in any way. The people that buy physical only, if stores close, will start buying digital. Some of them will return to buy physical, others won't. Thus you have reduced pool of people. That pool of people, will lose one of the most prominent gaming stores here in Sweden over the next few months, as Gamestop is closing all stores. From that reduced pool of people, some will buy from other places, others will switch to digital. The further reduced pool... And so it goes. It's not a black and white situation, but every time something happens, the pool of people buying physical will be smaller and smaller. The smaller it is, the less physical copies will be manufactured. The less of those are, the less games that pool of people will have to buy... And so it goes.

Thread COVID-19 could accelerate the death/shrinking of retail games
Yea, can see that happening. Most of the time, based on my impression, it is a culture and convenience question. Once they get used to the convenience of just being able to download and play, people tend to not go back to getting physical stuff. It won't be the end, though. Perhaps, instead of the ratio shifting by 5%, it could shift by 10% instead.

Thread Besides Microsoft, who else allows one purchase to play games on PC and console?
This falls into first-party territory. As much as buying two copies of a game is valuable to companies, it is far more valuable if people can play the games they want with the people they want regardless of platforms. If first-party goes ahead and allows cross-purchases, I think it will be only a matter of time before the whole industry is okay with the idea that if you buy a game on one platform, you could play it wherever you want. :)

Thread Why aren't there leaks for everything?
Because of trade secrets, of partnerships being formed and broken based on what is known, of financial implications, and many, many reasons. Let's just make an example. ANP (fake AMD) are making a new GPU series with Dx13 or whatever support, something futuristic and whatever, something that has not been done yet. They work on this GPU architecture for a few years, put billions in R&D. Rent out venues and schedule a real world event to promote the new GPUs. And then Bob from My Dad's Game Studio goes on Twitter and reveals everything he knows about the new ANP GPU in details. ANP had actually been planning to reveal two new AAA games during that press event, an exclusive right for which they've paid Steve and His Game Company 50 million $, and Tracy's Game Farm 30 million $, for marketing rights, support for getting new GPU-that-produces-smell features in the game, sending their own engineers to those companies to help with features, and other stuff. Thanks to Bob leaking and revealing everything, there is now no point in holding the event, as the info is out there. The business relations between ANP and the two game companies are now strained, because the leaks came form ANP's side. The proper reveal of those games has fallen through, resulting in millions of $ of loss for all parties involved (not to mention the missed marketing and PR opportunities). Thanks, Bob, a real 5 minutes of fame hero!

Think of executive producer as the single highest person on a project. They guide the overall high level vision and execution of a project. They have the ultimate right to say, this game must have X feature, and it is up to the directors affected, be that design, audio, art, tech, to figure out how to accomplish that.

Thread Is E3 going to be cancelled this year?
Never mind the actual fan events or annoucements / showcases. E3 is a great way and a great place to network and form connections and relationships with people from the industry. Something that is very much needed, especially helpful for smaller devs. Not exactly E3, but hey, I remember at Gamescom a year or two ago, we had places where indie devs could come in and pitch their games to be part of the EA Originals program. That stuff is incredibly valuable, and losing a big event will only be detrimental overall.

This should be easy. The first 4 digits on your card are likely the same if you have the same type of card as before. They are unique for that card type / country / bank combination, one of those. The last 4, check any other websites where you may have purchased something. Steam, Battle net, Origin, Amazon, whatever. They usually display only the last 4 numbers in receipts and your accounts on those services.

That is part of the reason why there are a lot less games on the service. It effectively adds an entirely new platform to support, especially if a studio does not have experience with making Linux based game clients. I'm actually surprised they have not chased the smaller companies that already have Linux versions of their games on Steam, to bring over their work to Stadia.

Are they providing a virtual machine, though, or an entire service that obscures what it is running in the background, and thus not fully representing what the actual service is? You have to consider your audience and the ease of work. Since Stellaris is a grand strategy game, it is not hard to imagine that a good portion of its target audience may still be running Win 7 or 8. Also, Dx12 is much lower level compared to Dx9, so it requires better knowledge of rendering engineering, something that the team may not have had during the development of the game.

Many times you don't want your employees to know certain information until that information is public knowledge. Knowing certain information can promote illegal insider trading, especially in publicly traded companies. That's one reason why employees usually find out things at the same time as the public regarding cancellation of projects or games getting delayed. If I as an employee know that a project will be cancelled and that will be announced on the Friday, I may try to be sneaky and sell my shares before the Friday, to make more money with the higher current share price, and then buy back shares once the price has fallen due to the announcement. While we have our events during the same time period as E3, we're not usually part of E3 (unless we're partnering with some first party) and our venue has so far been located quite a bit far away from E3. Technically Microsoft is in the same boat as we are. They do have their events, even very close to the actual E3 venue, but they are in an entirely separate building nowadays. :) E3 does not know what it wants to be nowadays. Gamescom is much better suited in that regard, where everything on the showfloor is built with the fans in mind, and there are separate locations to conduct all the business-related activities. That's what the show organisers sell from the ground up. With E3, it is a lot more mixed and over the place, especially now with the introduction of the public tickets for the event.

Thread Matt Booty (Xbox): Our titles for the next year or two will not be next gen exclusive
Yea, of course. It all depends on how fast the majority of users move from current gen to next gen and what the general attach rate for those users that have moved are. Some gens have had slower transitions than others, some faster. So it is kind of hard to predict this. We may see the first few games released exclusively for next gen having super high attach rate, because users may want to experience those next gen exclusive titles due to hype and marketing for next gen. And then the attach rate may start dropping down significantly as the market of next gen exclusive titles expands. I guess it's kind of a bet, do you want to sell to a higher % of users, but overall a smaller install base, or do you want to sell to a lower % of users, but overall a larger install base. Which poison would you pick? :D EDIT: Oh, and one thing to take into account in general, is what titles, if any, would first party (MS and Sony) pay for to be kept next gen exclusive. The more money they share to compensate for any opportunity cost, the more incentive there would be to make next gen only titles.

It will be similar for third party too. Most devs / pubs won't throw away a 150 million install base. It will take a year or two for that to happen to the most demanding AAA, let alone smaller scope games.

Thread Intel (Xe) DG1 spotted with 96 Execution Units (Entry-level GPU)
Very much depends on how different the drivers are compared to their iGPUs. Afaik, Intel are the biggest GPU manufacturer out there (if you count iGPUs, which you should), so many devs should already have experience with Intel GPUs. I wouldn't be worried about the performance competitiveness yet. Give them a few more years. For context, when we were developing support for DXR for BFV, we were often running and testing with 10-20 fps on a prototype hardware, but nVidia did a great job and in the end we ended up with 50+ fps on the actual shipping hardware.

Thread Microsoft needs a Plan B, they need to start thinking about a Halo replacement.
I would argue that it very much depends on what Halo Infinite ends up being. Gears 5 is a good example of how things have moved on in the last several years. While Gears 5 has a standard-for-today live servicing models, the experiences it provides have not moved on from the old arena shooter style experiences. Thus it has a hard time keeping casual players in, and as the live service for it continues, if it continues with the current models of adding more content for existing experiences, it will become even more difficult to get into by non-regular-Gears players and even more difficult to preserve those players over time. If Halo Infinite is the same arena shooter that all of the previous Halo games have been, it will struggle in locking players for the long run. Arena shooters are simply not that popular anymore, regardless of the brand. If it has deeper and more meaningful experiences, then in my opinion, it will be far more successful.

Thread Sea of Thieves made me feel things deeply, thanks Rare (some spoilers)
Over the last few months, me and a few fellow folks from work have been playing Sea of Thieves during weekends, slowly working our way through the Tall Tales adventures and voyages that were added this year as part of the Anniversary update for the game. To those that don't know, Rare added 9 of these tales, and each one can take anywhere from two to five hours, depending on how lucky or unlucky you are. We were always playing blind and without using any online resources, so every challenge and puzzle was new and fresh to us. Each one of these tales has been an emotional rollercoaster, with exciting and tense moments, with varying degrees of stress and insanity, traitorous enemies, heartbreaking stupidity on our own part (losing hours of progress by hitting explosive barrels in the ocean, for example), loads of fun and joy, bonding between friends, sharing drinks and stories, talking random stuff about work and real life during moments of calmness, and so on. Earlier today, we embarked on what was our final journey of these adventures, the 9th tale, to reach and discover the secret island lying in the middle of the mysterious and unreachable Shores of Gold. We started this last voyage at 19:30 and ended it around 23:45. Playing through it, knowing that it was slowly coming to an end, felt very surreal. This last quest required us to break through the shroud that had been keeping the island secret. During the journey there, we were attacked by multiple big megalodons, a couple of krakens, and we had to outrun unfriendly pirates a few times. The discovery of the island felt very epic. Certain things happen while breaking through the previously unsailable waters. The waters turned red, the sky darkened. Things were happening on the ship, but we finally made it through. Upon reaching the island, we started to get our bearings and learn of the secrets it kept. We climbed upon high mountains, dived into deep caves, lit cursed torches and triggered many traps. But we succeeded and unlocked the doors towards the belly of the island, and thus descended into darkness. After dying many times to random traps, spikes, pits, skeletons and explosives, we reached the end. About 3 hours of puzzles and challenges, from the simplest things that made sense, to the craziest things that didn't. It all came down to one last thing, and we were victorious. And then the ending story and exposition happened. A cute and lovely wrap-up moment that spoke of the adventures we've been through to reach the end, mentioning memorable moments and characters, voyages we've partaken. It had a lovely soundtrack playing in the background, and as it went on, it kind of hit me. It reminded me of all the hours we spent together on the seas, in stress and intense situations, in fun and laughter, in adventure and discovery. Of all the joy and fun times we had while playing this insane game. In a way, it made me feel quite happy that we had gone through these moments together, yet also rather sad as they were now over. As we were heading out of the darkness and back into the light, through one final secret path, the music got quite lovely, and as the light finally reached us, I teared up as it was such a beautiful moment. It is something that has not happened to me in a multiplayer game in many, many years. The last one to make me feel very real things was World of Warcraft, as running dungeons and raids with friends was also a surreal experience. As someone once said: "You'll have quite the tall tale to tell once you make it home." This is mine. :) Thanks for reading. Maybe this will get you to grab a few friends and go on an adventure together, one that you might remember and treasure for a long time. :)

That's not how things are done. Christian, the current GM of DICE LA, has done a lovely job fostering a very nice, friendly and positive work culture in the DICE LA offices, and has led the studio with their work on the multiple projects they've supported over the years. :) Studios in EA are structured in groups, with each studio having its own GM (general manager) and one group GM for each group. For example, Oskar is our GM for DICE, while David Rutter is now leading the overall EA European Studios group, which DICE, Ghost and Criterion are part of, and until recently, DICE LA. Studios are grouped in a way to make sense financially, regionally, logistically, share resources easier, and so on. As the Respawn organisation grows, it makes perfect sense to have DICE LA be part of that, since they have already been cooperating on things. It would help DICE LA share more knowledge and work closer with Respawn, and in turn grow as well. :) Not to mention, they are very close geographically.

Thread The current multiplayer environment punishes people who like more than one game
There are many, many good reasons from a game design point of view to do that. Game design directly ties to monetisation and profitability. * Time-limited content gives more engaged players more reasons to play during said time periods. * It brings back players that may have lapsed in the past, as it provides them with something new and fresh to earn. * It incentivises players to spend money on grind boosts, currency boosts, progression shortcuts and similar things, providing an opportunity to make more money. * It offers opportunities to create more non-standard content that may otherwise have hard time getting greenlit and invested in, such as event-themed items, content and events that do not fit as part of the regular in-game worlds and universes, and similar. * Skill-gated content provides more ways for skillful players to distinguish themselves over players of lesser skills. * It helps push skillful players to do their best even more, raising the bar regarding how competitive an experience can be. * This can create social drama and social prestige opportunities for both the game systems and the players. Can expand with a lot more game design reasons, but I have to go and annoy some people in Sea of Thieves now. :p

Not all content is meant for all players, and that's okay too. Some content is meant for the most dedicated and invested players. Some content is meant for the most hardcore and skillful players. 10 years later, unfortunately, many in this industry still seek validation by people outside of the industry. Seriously, why give a shit what some random person says? Surely the fact that you've made and seen a game from conception to release is validation enough? Yeah, it is a rhetorical question, it obviously is not enough for some people, some need to have their creations noticed to feel good about themselves. EDIT: This happens with both devs and players. Just recently the whole Witcher thing is a great example. Many people feel validated that some famous actors are playing games they also like, and cheering that. Why do you care? The games may be "region free", but when you publish a game for Playstation, you are still making at least 3 different SKUs that will not be compatible with one another even though they are exactly the same. One for NA, one for EU, and one for Asia / JP. If you have bought the EU SKU of whatever game from somewhere, and then try to buy an NA based DLC for it, it wouldn't work, at least it didn't last time I worked with this stuff. Hopefully with next gen they will revisit their publishing and cert processes, not fun having at least 6 different SKUs for a base game on PS (3 physical and 3 digital). MS and PC platforms in comparison have just 1.

Thread Why isn't there more Immersive Sims?
To those asking... Immersive Sim refers to first person systems and simulation driven design. The immersive part comes from the games being first person. In first person, the player directly feels and experiences what the surroundings provide through their intimate viewpoint. In third person, the player is merely an observer of the experiences the character on the screen has. The systems and simulation driven design mostly refers to approaches in design methodology the designers have used to craft said experiences, not necessarily what is obviously conveyed to players. An example of this could be the following, taken in isolation. A game system for the concept of heat is created. The other game systems in a game understand the concept of heat and react to the underlying game system in an appropriate way. These systems understand the emitting and absorbing of heat by assets and every asset built for these systems is subjected to the appropriate rules for handling heat. Thus when an asset with high heat emition is brought near an asset with low heat absorption, the second could catch fire (which in this case could be another game system or an ongoing property state an asset can be in) provided that the underlying systems allow for that to happen. In the above example, the second asset has caught fire not because a fire source was animated to make it appear so, but because the underlying simulation of the relevant game systems has deemed that is the appropriate state for it.

GreedFall The Evil Within 2 The Outer Worlds Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order Life is Strange 2 Halo: Reach Remember Me Also, WoW and Sea of Thieves will be my social games as usual. Will find some people to have drinks with and tell jokes in game, it is always fun and lovely. :)

Thread Something about Game Pass we shouldn't forget: We don't own those games.
Technically you don't. You own a license to access and play those games for as long as those licenses are active. Technically, the licenses on Steam as of this moment do not have an expiration date, except for the moment when the service, that those licenses are tied to, in this case Steam, shuts down.

Thread 15 years later, Half-Life 2 is still better than most shooters nowadays. Also why do modern games have shitty physics?
What? AI advancement has not stopped at all. Just instead of doing stupid fake scripted "AI" as in every single game, research has moved to create an actual self learning AI.

Thread Digital Foundry: Final Fantasy 15 on Stadia is a Technical Disappointment - Stadia vs Xbox One X Comparison
The PS4 OS is based on FreeBSD, which is a Unix based OS. The Stadia OS / shell likely runs either on a Linux based OS or on a BSD based OS. Haven't looked into this personally, but I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case. Rendering wise, it makes a lot more sense to start with the PS4 version as a base as it is much closer OS and low level components wise than the Windows version. Additionally, in order to make use of multi CPU and multi GPU environments, games have to be rearchitectured with that in mind as no other systems currently (except Windows, but that is VERY rare) support multi CPU and multi GPU workloads, something that not a lot of companies will do considering the very low Stadia user base. Just saying something like, it can use the infinite power of the cloud, will not magically make a game do so. Be that for running in 4K or with 745 fps. :p

Thread Mental Health Era |OT2| Community and Understanding
A girl I really really like and had a major crush on said that she's not really interested when I asked her our last night. I was really hoping she would be up for going out, as I love her character and who she is. And she is also one of the few people I actually know here in Sweden that I'm interested in keeping in touch with, with most others being random people from work. Haven't slept, been overthinking a hundred situations of how maybe I approached her wrongly or didn't choose the right moment, or who the hell knows what. Also having a birthday in a few weeks when I turn 29 and not really having any friends to do anything with over the one month of vacation I have coming now for the holidays, is kind of hitting me hard. With all the burnout from work, I can just sense a self destructive period coming up again, just as I managed to get out of one. I have no regrets as those are pointless and all the mistakes I've done have made me who I am now, but stuff like this drains the life out of me and makes me question whether coming to Sweden was a good choice. Feel like leaving all behind and running away again as I did before I came here.

It's actually a lovely weather outside. Just above 0, still a bunch of snow everywhere, with a bit of a chilly wind, but not too bad. Luckily I got to the store before they closed, so was able to buy some detergent that I needed for the laundry. How about you, doing good?

Thread While I do enjoy matchmaking, I miss server/game browsers
Matchmaking for official servers. Server browser for community servers. That's my ideal scenario. Actually allowing server browsers to display official servers makes it hell for the matchmaking systems and models, as we have learned time and again with Battlefield.

Thread Old man with a question: what's the deal with "seasons" in modern multiplayer games?
Another actual answer: "Seasons" or whatever other word you would like to use for it, are nicely packaged usually-larger content drops that provide benefits for both the players and the business. From a player point of view, people get new content or a spin on existing content, along with persistence systems that help keep players engaged with a game for longer periods of time. This content usually follows a particular theme that a game / service focuses on for a period of time, before moving on to provide something new and fresh. From a business point of view, it provides an opportunity for a refreshed marketing beat, which leads to increased player engagement, retention, and better money making opportunities. It also provides employees with more predictable and healthier release cycle, as content can be created and delivered, but gated and made available over time as a season goes on, reducing the dependency on having everything ready at a certain time, and with that reducing crunch-related work behaviours. The actual provided content can be acquired in many different ways, and business models vary between games. * You could have expansion-like packed DLCs with their own systems and marketing beats, that require players to pay in to participate, like with for example, Battlefield 1. * You could have both free and paid content mixed together, with mostly gameplay-affecting items being free to acquire over time, through participating and engaging with the related persistence systems, with additional vanity content available for purchase, like with for example, Battlefield V.

Pretty much. The company has been supportive of every single instance I know of this stuff. Which includes music, movies, books, and any other creative work, where creative work is not equal to a commercial video game project.

Bait title. It just wrong. Not sure how much I can go into things, but things are very relaxed and it definitely is NOT all creative works. It is not fucking nuts. And it has nothing to do with unions. Is this the new weekend drama? :)

Thread Sony has updated their office politics about artistic conflict of interest
NDAs are valid while you are employed at the company. And you could get fired for breaking them. After you are no longer employed, if you break an NDA, a company can sue you, but the courts would usually side with you rather than a big corporation, in a non corrupted legal system, that is. One reason why people usually don't break NDAs is professional courtesy and respect towards the company and its employees.

As turd as Electron may be, MS did a fantastic job making all of that disappear and empowering devs across many platforms to do a better job. I've seen many people pretty much abandon many of the third party "IDEs" they used before across web, game and backend engineering, and share a similar work environment through Code.

Thread Battlefield V |OT2| Empire of the Soon
It's just not healthy going there. :/ Stress and negativity is constant.Different games, different flavours. BF4 had levelution / levolution / whatever we even used to call it, I keep forgetting. Large set pieces, but mostly scripted ones that always resulted in the same outcome. BF1 shifted the focus towards large player-controlled behemoths vehicles with much more dynamic destruction. BFV upped the dynamic destruction even more, added bullet penetration, and also player-controlled artillery strikes and massive rocket explosions. In an ideal world, it would be nice to combine all three. :p But things are not always ideal, haha.

Thread EA: "Cloud gaming is going to bring in another billion players"
Back home in Macedonia, people live with less pay. But unlimited 16 Mbps internet is 10 EUR per month, now. Nobody has money to buy a new PC or a new console. But everyone can pay the Internet cost for a month. Add in some small stuff on top of that, like a 10 EUR Game Pass sub where xCloud comes in for free, and you get some users in. Not saying it will happen now. 10 years ago, very few people had smartphones and internet on their phones. Nowadays, everyone has that. A lot has changed in 10 years. A lot will change in 10 years. :)

Thread EA: "Cloud gaming is going to bring in another billion players"
In a way, you literally just described cloud gaming. Much of the actual logic in these games is executed on the server side, as is the case with many, many other multiplayer games. In Battlefield, for example, everything is synced and executed on the game servers which are running in the happy little clouds, and the game clients only render the data that they get from the servers. The game servers keep track of all of the networked assets in the maps, which are almost all of the assets present on the maps, sync the states of said assets and maps across all connected clients, do any related physics processing and send that back to the clients for them to render what is supposed to be displayed and so on. Every input a client does is not applied until a game server validates it, executes it, and responds back with an appropriate action that the client sender needs to do. :) Cloud gaming refers to much more than streaming down a render of a game running fully on the cloud, like Stadia. :p

I feel like we will be getting Gears 6 first. And perhaps that will offer the end of the current story, with the studio afterwards being open to focusing on something else. Gears 5 clearly indicates that things are not over, and that it sort of builds up for the ultimate battle that is yet to come.
