Thread So... I've been looking into "proper" computer chairs for back support and HOLY FUCKING SHIT
I spent a couple of years sitting on a Herman Miller chair at my office. Pretty nice, but the prices are inflated. I’ve been really happy with this chair from argos with fold up arms. It makes it much easier to get into a good seating position and lets me tuck away the chair too

Thread What are your gaming design sins?
Players complain about fetch quests yet: - repeat same combat for rare drops - grind to collect items for crafting I often feel the framing of fetch quests is the worst part, but I don’t mind the task. - Is there story context for the items needed or repeated tasks? - Does the game show me my progress towards the task, and alert me when I’ve fulfilled the requirement? Plenty of games I enjoy use fetch quests badly, and I don’t mind. It’s rarely the best design decision but it remains effective as a universal way to send the player off to explore and play for a while.

Thread Quietest Switch controller options?
I sometimes wake incredibly early, while my partner sleeps for another hour or so. I love playing games during this time, but the clicky controls on the switch wake her up. Analogue control is okay, and touchscreen is okay too, but anything that uses button presses is too loud. I already have the rumble disabled and the fan noise, while annoying, tends to stop a few Seconds after turning on the unit. Is the Switch v2 and mini quieter? I really hate active cooling on small electronics. Are there any controllers for the switch which are quiet?

Thread Ultrawide tips for game devs? Best and worst treatments?
I'm a dev working mostly on third person games, and I'd like to support ultra-wide in my game. I want to prepare for it from the outset, and I figured it might be useful for other developers too. Which games do a good job with this? I mostly work on third person games with relatively high cameras, so closer to Mario 3D World than Assassin's Creed. This seems like an especially difficult camera angle to get right without a lot of camera micro-management from the player. Is ultra-wide mostly intended for first person games and close range action games played at a desk? - Any games in particular that allow ultra-wide, but are too badly optimised to play like that? - Do any third person games do a good job with a camera above head height? - Do HUDs go to the corners or float around the middle of the screen? The corners seem like a bad idea if you have to turn your head. - 32:9 vs 21:9 - which aspect ratio should I be designing for? Are 32:9 monitors common? Any general suggestions of tips or resources would be good too.

Thread Question for Devs/Pubs: Why are you pulling games from GeForce Now?
Any negative reviews on Steam will damage the developer. I don’t believe players can reasonably be expected to distinguish which parts of the problem is because of the developer and which is because of NVidia.

Thread Question for Devs: Why are you pulling games from GeForce Now?
Speaking as a dev, it does concern me that services like this can potentially complicate the testing and bugs in a game. Geforce Now can introduce any number of strange behaviours to input or timing of a game, so any bad reviews or customer support headaches caused by this service can put a drain on engineering and support staff.

Thread Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is out on iOS and Android
That's great! Bloodstained has a suspend feature which is embedded in the exit menu, but having something that happens automatically is much better. I worked on a PC to iOS port a few years ago and we did an auto-save alongside manual saves, which covered us for this behaviour. Nice to know it runs okay even on iPhone SE.

Thread Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is out on iOS and Android
That’s fantastic! A shame it is the new localisation and dub, but it’s nice that this is easier to play than ever. Does the game offer any sort of suspend save or auto-save? Relying on save rooms is impractical on a mobile device. I’m glad that controller support is so much more practical on iOS these days. My 8bitdo controller always travels with my ipad.

Thread Switch is about to enter its fourth year, and still no way to access the majority of its massive back catalogue
I still have my PS3 hooked up for this reason. PS4 does not have backwards compatibility, which is inconvenient but understandably niche. The switch has also worked out as a great platform for selling old games at a premium, for both Nintendo and third parties.

Thread Sony, Facebook, KojiPro cancel GDC appearances due to coronavirus (Up: Microsoft and Epic are also out) [See Staff Post]
Lots of GDC happens because of face to face meetings and realising what you have in common during group conversations. Most importantly, lots of what happens is off record. Remote is never off record, and you can’t control the spread of information. I’m not going to show a half broken prototype online but I’ll get my laptop out and bounce ideas around with others in person. It’s true that some of the talks could be worked into remote versions, but not at such short notice.

Thread The guy who made "Blade Gunner" in Dreams has gotten a job offer from a European game developer
Making stuff is fun! I make games for a job but always enjoyed tinkering with game making tools. I still do. The hours I spent making maps in Amiga Worms and 3D Construction Kit all contributed to my skills today. I’m happy to see that people can get such visibility with their work now. Mods and maps and custom content for games has always been a major component in games recruitment. I just wish that Sony would open up a Dreams Arcade Plattform, so the games can be played and bought by non-Dreams owners.

Thread LTTP: DOOM (1993) - I can't believe how much I'm enjoying this!
Doom ( zdoom) is often the first game I play to try out new computers! I’m not very good at it but I really enjoy it, and I still play on keyboard only controls. Doom 2016 left me cold because of the emphasis on weirdly cruel and gratuitous up close melee. The Doom I knew was keeping distance with a shotgun, not about chain combos like a brawler. I respect the design but I hated playing. I’m glad it has a sequel but it isn’t for me. I was super happy when these games got new releases, and I’m especially glad they’ve got support for Sigil et al even on console. This thread inspires me to try completing Doom 1 again. I have only done so once, in 1994!

I always heard the USA PS2 Ico version was unfinished, and the later JP/EU version was better. Fascinating to hear song of the differences you faced. I picked up an preowned 11” iPad Pro 256gb a couple of months ago and it has been the best drawing experience I’ve ever had. I’m mostly using Procreate with brushes. Thread Ordered an iPad Pro! What are the must have apps? (Drawing, animation, pixel art, or your favs!)
Procreate is by far the best drawing experience on iPad. I love it. For my game design work I’m using GoodNotes every day. It’s incredible, despite being limited to hand written text. I’ll throw in a recommendation for Affinity Designer, which works excellently on iPad.I want to like infinite painter more than I do. I bought it but I dread using it for anything serious. It crashes a lot, has limited options for import and export, and the PSD export simply does not work. I love the tiling pattern option for game textures, but it’s obnoxious that you can’t easily open a PNG and edit it.

Thread Was "Die Hard Arcade" really based on the movie series of the same name?
Arcade games based on movies tend to stick around for a long time, long past their popularity as a movie. I remember playing this in an arcade in Manchester UK around 2000 despite the then dated hardware. The PS2 version is great too, although I wish they had included an option for the original 3D graphics. I often blame Die Hard Arcade for QTEs, with the button press reaction tests between scenes. Dynamite Deka 2 really built on design with some incredibly permission and creative use of items in game design. When you pick up a tray of apples you can choose whether to throw each one as a weapon, or eat them for health. Then you finish by throwing the tray, or just hitting folk with it. It's a huge inspiration to me as a game designer.

You have one PC that you want to connect to two different rooms, right? I'm not entirely clear what you're expecting. The TV is just another monitor. I have a crappy gaming Alienware Alpha R2 connected to my TV exclusively, and this is where I play almost all of my PC games. I only play games with a gamepad. You can launch Steam Big Picture mode which makes it easy enough, but otherwise be prepared to use some sort of KB/mouse interface to navigate your content. I use the Logitech K400 which is horrible to type on, and unpleasant to navigate with, but incredibly useful.

Thread Inferior Conversions/Ports of Games You Preferred to the "Better" Versions?
Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion MS/GG is a thousand times better than 16-bit version. I love that Mickey can’t ‘shoot apples’. The whole game revolves around carrying and throwing objects, using them to solve puzzles and as a method of combat. Even the treasure chests can be used to destroy enemies before opening them. It always feels funny and satisfying and playful. I also prefer the art style and think Mickey’s sprite is fantastic. These days I can’t play the mega-drive version or remake without wanting to play the ultimate version. Any other fans of this game?

I’m glad it is getting a rebrand, although it is a shame that the Mother games aren’t available on current platforms. Many of the biggest hits in recent years have been fan games from folk that grew up playing 16-bit emulators. Stardew Valley, Freedom Planet, Ittle Dew and Undertale are all explicit in their references and template, and it helps to have a fandom built from the most popular emulated games.

Thread Low spec PC users: how do you know whether a game will run well enough?
I have two Windows PCs currently which are both underpowered, and I never have any idea which games will run okay. - works okay for simple games but attempting Outer Wilds was painful. - This Steambox PC is hooked up to my TV with a gamepad. I really enjoyed Edith Finch and Forza Horizons 4 on it, but It runs into performance issues sometimes. 2D games run fine but playing anything 3D is always a guessing game. I don’t have any desires to upgrade either of my computers. I just bought Wattam because it looks simple enough, but I wouldn’t dare try something like Control because I heard it runs poorly on good machines. Services like Game Pass PC seem to be loaded with games like Gears of War which I doubt will run, so it seems like a bad value for me. Thread keep trying But cant stay interested in bloodborne due to blood vial farming
That’s an ideal case, so long as folk are always buying vials. Beating an area first time is pretty rare. The bad situation that I ran into, and I believe many people are running into, is when they die in a new area and they have no blood vials or echoes. Players are left with no option to even explore or experiment. I honestly don’t think farming is good game design. An ideal case would be to allow both types of play, with consumables and auto refill, but that takes care to balance. In terms of ‘easy mode’ and accessibility, I will always push for an _option_ that means players can avoid hating their time with the game. I would even (reluctantly) pay money for a DLC item that changes this. I completed Bloodborne years ago, but whenever I consider playing again this is the negative thing I remember and what puts me off.

That said, don’t underestimate the story. I haven’t played much of XI yet, but I just completed DQV and that story really goes some places. Honestly, I always want to enjoy RPGs more than I do. I always want to like roguelikes more than I do. Shiren is really fantastic, but I often felt like I was punished for experimenting. Brogue is very good, but the default narrow text font is annoying because it makes it really hard for me to judge distance, as the same screen distance in each axis represents a large difference. I enjoyed the iPad version too. Unexplored on switch was interesting but the UX is the worst I have ever seen on a console game. I also usually play on laptop which means I have no number pad for diagonal movement. I wish PC devs would consider a diagonal modifier, like Mystery Dungeon’s diagonal lock. I tried making every character step on the broom, tried holding metal items while being swept at, and everything that didn’t work made the game feel less coherent and more like an awkward point and click. No amount of transparency will review work practices. Even if you work there you can be oblivious of how others are being treated. As for cancelled products, this happens all the time in creatives fields, and other fields too! So many fields are driven towards internal green light processes, and lots of near completed products get shelves. There are artists and coders and designers and QA and lots of people that work on these. Demanding to see the art assets doesn’t benefit anyone, and robs the company of the option to use these assets in a future game (which sometimes happens). Does it suck to be unable to show all of your work as part of your portfolio? Yes, but that’s normal.

Thread Completely Transparent Game Development - Will It Ever Happen? Should It Ever Happen?
Even within a company there is work which is kept ‘secret’. Sometimes it is better for work to be siloed and reviewed periodically. People tend to have a knee jerk response to unfinished work, even internally. I once had to completed redo some artwork because a coder shared an early draft and someone important said they didn’t like it, so the knee jerk response was to nuke it entirely rather than let it be finished. Bad work practices suck, but only games companies get referred to as being ‘secretive’. People making movies and books and TV shows and music don’t get called secret. People working for music streaming sites or services don’t get referred to as secretive.

Wow there are so many horrible replies to this thread. Games are riddled with UX nightmares and getting started with games as an adult in 2019 can be rough. Be prepared for anything you pick to not click for any number of reasons. I’m in a similar boat and I can share some experiences with titles listed. - Gone Home: No I know this is off your list. She didn’t like the first person controls and hated opening cupboards. She felt uncomfortable with rummaging. - Life is Strange: Yes We took turns controlling this, but later on she had me control the waking around bits because she didn’t like the controls. I had to remind her to rummage in bins etc, and she found this very impolite. We played through this to completion and she loved the story. - Minecraft Story Mode: Mixed She tried this while sick and the controls and interface were generally fine, but the story itself wasn’t enough for her to want to play past chapter 1. - Oxenfree: No She really disliked the teens and characters immediately, and stopped playing quickly. Controls seemed okay though. Worth a try. - Uncharted: mixed She hated how much combat there is even on the easiest settings, and failed at any boss like situation. Suggestions: - Frog Wares Sherlock Holmes games. She watched me play these and on the easier settings you can rely on the checklist to focus on the narrative.

Thread Makeup and Beauty |OT| Sustaining Supernormal Stimulus
I'm starting a new job in a few weeks, so I'm planning to use that as an excuse to do my make-up every day. I'm male, but I love working make-up and feminine styles into my aesthetic, and a new workplace seems like an ideal situation. It will give me a good opportunity to practice make-up too. Any tips on make-up as a daily routine as opposed to an occasional thing?

My best advice with lipstick is to get a good lip liner, and work from there. I like the MAC liners, but they're expensive. I also have this 'always sharp' lip liner from Smashbox which matches my natural tone perfectly. Even without any make-up on it helps to refine that hard edge to my lips, but also looks great with some of the nude lips. If you can get away with just lip gloss and lip liner you'll have much a much easier time. My current favourite nude lips are MAC's Blankity and Boldly Bare.

Surface Pro 4 has horrible battery, and a used one even worse. Worse yet, the i7 gobbles batteries even doing nothing complex, and the i7 fan is often really struggling and stays on lots. Instead I’d recommend an i5 8gb SP4/SP5/SP6, but be prepared to fight the battery on the older units.

The Surface Go is a really nice machine! At my office people have different Surface devices so I see them all, and people always envy the Go. The keyboard takes some getting used to, but it’s so portable and the USBC is handy to use it on a desk. Definitely be careful with buying older surfaces. The battery is often devastated, and the screens are bad compared to newer ones.

There's a lot here, and I'm grateful that you're remaining polite and thinking the best of others. I am reading and I am doing all I can to understand the criticism. I think we should always remain critical of every platform we engage with. Unfortunately I feel that some of what is being stated is a little hyperbolic, especially when they lead to conclusions. We simply don't yet know exactly how EGS will shake out for developers and consumers. Sometimes things seem entirely positive at first but turn out be negative, and vice versa. Often new markets work out as having plenty of pros and cons for everyone. I was also excited about Ouya and Onlive. Games like 2064 Read Only Memories only got to be what they are based of money paid by Ouya for timed exclusivity.

I first-hand remember how crappy the Steam process was. I saw literal handshaking and connections opening the access door, and I agree that it sucks that Epic's process is currently similar. I feel like any store should be granted a grace period to find its legs before it opens up submissions. Valve has never handled it well, so I'm hoping Epic will grow over the next twelve months and make room for other games. That said, plenty of developers got a huge leg up by their game being the poster child for xbox live, PSN, etc.

I'm actually very fond of Steam, especially since they added the refund for games which don't work properly (I lost plenty of money on games which I couldn't get working). On one of the PC games I worked on I was instrumental in the game leaning heavily on Steam Workshop and other community features. I'm mostly fond of competition and market disruption. I use a Kindle to read books but I wish there were a viable competitor for buying and reading ebooks.

Can you explain how launching a highly publicised storefront and promising developers visibility is predatory? Steam has been hostile for developers for a long time, especially with the community labelling games as ‘abandoned’ and threatening review abuse if the dev doesn’t conform to any number of arbitrary demands. As for pricing, games have been a race to the bottom with pricing and I’d love for developers to feel free and safe to release games in a slightly higher price bracket. I’m a developer but also a consumer. I support the rights for devs to release games like Tetris Effect or even pixel platformers at $25 or 50 or 75.

Sorry for misreading. Very interesting to see a purchase on EGS equated to a lootbox or disc based DRM, but I do feel anti consumer practices should be put in context when it's a equivalent game delivery platform on the same hardware. There are indie games [clarification: from solo indie devs without millions of dollars] which are launching with timed EGS Exclusivity and the money they grants them has allowed them to hire artists and musicians to make the game better. This is very much directly effecting which games can feasibly spend what budget, even on the lower end.

Suspend/resume just about loading times, but simply returning to precisely the point I was at. I could be half way through a boss fight, about to finish a race, or simply in the middle of some fiddly inventory juggling. There are lots of points where it's valid to want to return to rather than resuming from the last validated save file. Tetris DX had an amazing implementation of suspend/resume. The game would auto suspend when you paused the game, so turning on the Game Boy would simply return to the pause screen. You didn't have to select an option, it was just like this by default. I once kept a marathon Tetris game going for three weeks of commutes.

Marginalisation causes marginalisation. I’ve sat in development meetings and suffered awful phrases like ‘most players’, ‘average player’, ‘default character’ while they casually dismiss the concerns of anyone that isn’t an able bodied male. Things are much better now than 10-15 years ago but it’s an uphill struggle. Games can allow players to spend time in a magical world of infinite potential. Games need not tacitly endorse the worst parts of society.

Thread LGBT Representation in Gaming - should it be proportional or equal?
When you say ‘let the creator decide’ you’re actually conceding to the ‘lowest possible effort’ from what are most often older white male producers, who get more say over the scheduling of work than games design. Anything that can be cut will be cut, and it’s only when it becomes a core pillar of the game’s identity and marketing. Most of the representation improvements I’ve seen in games have been from junior devs who highlight the larger and lucrative communities on YouTube and other social media. Undertale and Stardew Valley blowing up helped LGBT representation in AAA become financially appealing to people that otherwise might have dismissed it. Posting on forums that you don’t really care that the devs don’t care does not help.

I bought Bioshock and quit playing after several hours of annoying combat and being teleported to the nearest respawn cupboard. I later learned what was so amazing in Bioshock that must never be spoiled, and it’s true that this is a nice conceit, but this behaviour swiftly ignores a bad time players might have trying to get there. ‘Clever story twists with hours of irritating combat’ also sums up Earthbound and Undertale.

I never got around to playing it but the fandom was intense. was a game where the fandom felt huge and noisy from day one, and it always felt like a cross section of the fandom and the (webcomic) fandom. When I played the game and ran into tech problems or gameplay problems I always felt like the fans only referred to the game with a very peculiar revenance. I sometimes wonder about the games I played fondly, like and wonder how people felt about the huge fandom amongst the otherwise sober sensible titles. I love these games but I’m sure they were annoying in their heyday. Have you ever felt like you were part of the hyperbole for a game? I really wanted to follow the Undertale story but I felt berated by overzealous fandom criticising my struggle and insisting the game is so easy and only five hours long. I’m curious, is Delta Rune based on action combat systems as well? I don’t plan to play but it’ll be interesting to see how many people play this with no knowledge of Undertale.

I bought the PS3 version and really didn't like it, as it felt so bland and the combat didn't click for me. Animal Crossing does a great job of this, but the body types are much simpler. What are you hopes for player customisation? What would you like to see in terms of pronouns? Are there any games that do a good job with this?

One really important thing to consider is how pre-rendered environments needed very little QA and code support. Glad you're enjoying the Surface Book! Yeah, touchpad support on OSX is amazing and the Windows 10 options are just not good. You have the three and four finger gestures, but there aren't many options you can set them to. I have no idea why I can set finger finger swipe to volume control but not back/next!! I don't use Firefox, but see if there are any options for three finger gestures instead of two finger. Your gestures may be clashing with "2 finger tap = right click", or the basic "two fingers = scroll" behaviour. Tablet mode in windows 10 kinda sucks. You're basically still using an interface intended for a laptop. I often use the flowing undocked onscreen keyboard because otherwise I can't see the part of the interface I'm supposed to be typing in. It's a nasty hack and nothing like using a real tablet.

I enjoyed Tearaway on the Vita. How different in the PS4 version? Some nice suggestions! I made the mistake of playing DKCTP co-op on Wii U, and I honestly feel like the levels in that game are overly optimised for speed running. If you want to play slowly or explore the levels the game becomes so much harder. I also hated having to manage the lives or balloons or whatever in the mini-map. IIRC there was some horrible grind for coins to buy items. Yoku's Island was delightful but my entire time playing was me being completely stuck and unable to navigate around the map. Even the fast travel didn't help, and I often simply couldn't find my way to the next location because it has so many one-way gates and weird pinball branching. Regarding weaknesses and strengths, I really feel the game should highlight which enemies on the map are weak/strong rather than having to cross check every unit. Precisely this. You could easily mark the tiles at risk of attack during the next enemy turn including moving units and even trebuchets etc. It’s basically an aggregate of all the unit ranges, which lets the player undestand the ‘safe zone’.

I think I’m going to bail on this game until it gets some more QOL improvements. The general lack of feedback makes me feel like I’m playing blind most of the time. It’s so weird that things like ranged units have no tile markers to show their range potential! The strength weaknesses could be highlighted when a unit is selected, but instead you have to cross-reference a set of messy icons. I really love the art and general presentation of the game, it’s just a shame that the UX and visual feedback is so lacking. Celeste's implementation of difficulty is not perfect, imo. Having a whole campaign 'tarred' as assist mode only is a real shame. They could have allowed individual collections or progressions as 'assist mode enabled', and allowed the player to challenge themselves to remove the marker. This could work in Wargroove by allowing players to repeat the levels again on normal difficulty. Into the Breach marks its challenge trophies in different colours based on the difficulty chosen, so players can return the game on a later difficulty, or recognise that one particular trophy had to be done that way.

Losing all feedback regarding performance if you use any easy mode does seem pretty limiting. I intend to use easy mode for a while but I do feel like the feedback is poor. Into the Breach has bronze/silver/gold stars based on difficulty level, which motivates me to return to the missions and get the higher value stars. Yeah, the lack of undo feels really annoying. It makes me want to pencil in my movements before executing, but the game makes no allowance for that. Into the Breach has a single 'big' undo, but you can undo any movement action. I find it especially annoying to have to commit to attacking during the move turn, because often I'll have to waste an attack shuffling my troops around, and of course there's no option to swap positions with another unit.

One of the QOL things from Fire Emblem that I miss here is highlighting the ‘safe’ zone, beyond the reach of enemy attacks. Checking the reach of everyone makes moving every unit a bit of a slog. I have disabled the animations for the time being. I wish the feedback was better with it disabled. I’d prefer to reenable them but the battles are just so slow. I’d love to see highlights on the tiles that would perform a critical attack. Either located next to X character, or for the Knights all the tiles at the fullest reach. Do any other games manage fog of war in an interesting way? I would really like to put down observation markers (with a turn counter) on troops I observe. When playing multiplayer does the other side know when they’ve been spotted? The wagon evacuation was my favourite mission so far, although I haven’t played much further. Many of these games are IMO unplayable without the manual. Case in point, Haunted House. This has an illegible blurry scan in the collection, but reading it shows that it's crucial to know that you're moving between floors in a house with invisible stairs. Thankfully I found a scan on Archive.org. It's just so frustrating that Atari doesn't even bother to maintain a list of links or PDFs of these scans.

It's really fast to jump into the menu and swap to different games, but there are no save games or favourites list. The responsive controls and fast menu are the opposite of the Sega Mega Drive collection. I really enjoyed this morning! I hadn't even heard of it before. First I played the 2600 version then I swapped to the lovely Vector arcade version. Reading the manual helped a lot, because the game can seem pretty difficult to interpret. I really believe reading the manuals adds a lot to these games as they're often so abstract!! I'm so mad that the manuals provided are such low resolution scans (). Are they bad on the other systems too? :( I want to read the manuals and give the games a better chance.

Kevin Spacey is a good example. I was grateful to have watched Baby Driver before Spacey turned out to be a milkshake duck. I would feel uncomfortable engaging with something with Kevin Spacey which has been made since then, despite the fact that he might be excellent in them. My personal approach of media engagement tends to be scaled based on their involvement, and whether their involvement was done in light of their actions. Hades is complicated because the contribution is slight, and a lot of things have happened since Woods was first cast and locked down in contracts. Generally, I feel that if Woods was a notorious as Cosby I’m sure they would annex his character.

Whenever I see anything interesting about Assassin’s Creed it isn’t long until I see some ‘outside of simulation’ sci-if garbage appear and completely ruin it. I often feel it’s a shame that no-one can do an ‘edit’ of Assassin’s Creed that strips the worst of Ubisoft from it. Assassin’s Creed has never used the simulation in any meaningful way for gameplay. It’s just the cheapest way for them to add ‘lore’ which is palatable to the dull palates of mid-2000 gamers.

The whole of HD feels like they boiled every piece of grit away from Wipeout and ended up with something very clinical. It's almost like the Star Wars vs Star Trek aesthetic. The fact that I enjoy Mario Kart probably helps explain why I prefer 2048. As someone that suffered a day of VR sickness in the Oculus DK1 demo, I was very wary of Wipeout VR. Thankfully they have various really great VR comfort options. They turn them all on by default and invite you to turn them off/on from the mid race pause menu. I gradually reduced the cockpit blinkers (which limit horizontal vision), and I’m prepared to turn them back on if I feel queasy. I love Wipeout VR so much! Definitely next to Astro Bot as one of my favourite VR things. Shame the demo doesn’t have as many comfort options. I wish they would update it! I had to take breaks when trying the demo.

It reminded me of playing big arcade machines with motion cabs like Daytona 2, or going on an intense rollercoaster. So I bought the Wipeout Omega Collection and I’ve been loving the 2048 campaign, despite my being terrible at it. However! I tried Wipeout HD mode in VR and found it incredible boring. One of my goals as a game designer is to allow people to enjoy being bad at a game. Recently I have been playing Wipeout Omega on PSVR. I am absolutely horrible at it, barely scraping the 5/8 place qualifier for the next event. This is on the default difficulty, which I’m pretty sure is easy mode. Despite this I love my time with it!! Sometimes I’ll steal a first place and I won’t even think about all the assist modes I have enabled. Sometimes I’ll tackle a game where I feel completely out of my depth and it’s obvious that lots of the systems are intended for someone very familiar with the genre. Playing Homeland on GameCube was always interesting to me, despite my not understanding any Japanese and I wasn’t playing online. Instead I would fumble around the first couple of areas and blindly work through menus until something made my health increase. I never got off the ground with it but I loved playing. Which games do you enjoy even though you are very bad at them?

I got PSVR this week too. Astro Bot really is amazing. Every stage does something new, and it’s tbe secret Mario 3D Land sequel I didn’t realise I wanted. My greatest criticism is that there are times where it feels a bit too slavishly inspired by 3D Mario, but it does so many things of its own too that it’s hard to criticise. Wipeout I did not expect to enjoy so much, especially as I’ve never enjoyed the game in the past. I played it on Sega Saturn and PS3 and it never clicked. Playing the demo made me think of playing Daytona 2 in the arcades with a huge screen and rollercoaster tracks. Playing the full game with comfort options and level progression has helped a lot too! It’s still a game I’m horrible at and makes me feel pretty queasy, but it is easily one of my favourite VR things. Moss was an immediate disappointment tbh, so I’m going to circle back around to that another time. I’ll probably wait until I’m done with Astro Bot. No Heroes Allowed (edit not ‘Not More Heroes’, oops) has a tabletop interface and two talkative characters in the room with you. I expected to hate their banter, but it works amazingly well. I’d like to see this format expanded upon. Maybe a non-creepy version of Summer Lesson! Rez HD is amazing, but I’m already a Rez fan.

As a developer, I just wonder whether there is a good middle ground. Lowest common denominators from cross platform won’t get us Astro Bots but there is no reason why Crash Bandicoot shouldn’t be VR compatible. I assume anything like Spyro‘s camera is a bit rough for motion sickness. Several smaller devs with VR support on PC have no PSVR in their PS4 games, like Elite Dangerous and Subnautica. It’s a very difficult platform to QA and to provide with tech support. At this point if I was budgeting a game project and had to choose between a VR version or a Switch version, I’d usually lean on Switch.

Thread Is it suffice to say that VR's perception on this board changed in 2018?
I think it’s safe to say that Astro Bot, Moss and Tetris Effect are much better standard bearers for the technology than Resident Evil, both in terms of wholesome content and also simplicity of controls. I was a critic of VR, but the hype for these games and the aggressive hardware and software sales made me take a chance on PSVR. I’m glad I have it but I’m still sceptical. Motion sickness is a big problem. I feel a bit queasy after sessions, depending on the game. It’s something I’m managing, but it is not that relaxing. On the other hand, immersion is incredible. The first thing my girlfriend said while she was playing was ‘it really helps you stop thinking about other things! I can’t even see my phone!’ It’s pretty clumsy and awkward in a living room environment but it’s a pretty amazing experience.

So far I’ve played the following: - First experience was the Playroom VR astrobot platformer demo. Only a few minutes but it’s really amazing. Felt a teensy bit queasy when the camera moved forward but I managed okay. I have Astrobot Rescue Mission but I haven’t put the disc in yet. - Tetris Effect This was actually a smidge underwhelming from a VR point of view but also the most comfortable in terms of play. Looking forward to playing more. Update: my gf is playing on beginner mode and loving it, but she hates some of the music. - Tumble VR I loved the PS Move version so I was excited for this. I don’t like the annoying robot that floats around and the whole voice acting is a bit annoying. The original Tumble has none of that. Still, it’s pretty nice to play, even with just the DS4. - Rez, Area 1 This is amazing! I didn’t realise you could use the stick to control the cursor at first so I was doing everything with my head, haha. It works super well. The controller vibration adds a lot to this.

My PSVR is sitting waiting for Christmas Day. Any recommendations for new users how to have a less bad time? I should at least make sure I have a spare plug socket.

Thread Parents, do you prepare your kids’ game presents for play on Christmas?
I think preinstalling everything is a great move. I’ve bought ‘myself’ PSVR this year, and I know my partner will also play it, and my visiting family too. So I’ve bought and installed plenty of VR demos and games so we can play on Christmas Day without too much hassle. I remember hooking up the Wii on launch day, with my friends all gathered around to see the new exciting thing. During setup I made the mistake of agreeing to update the firmware, as I thought it would be immediate. We were stuck there for what felt like forever and it really spoiled the moment. I felt pretty embarrassed and somewhat responsible for this crappy moment. I agree that it’s nice to open things, but I would have rather been able to play right then. The idea of servers being jammed on Christmas is terrible reason to have to wait until another day. Make sure you manage expectations! One small nice thing gift givers can do is ensure there’s a spare plug socket and generally ease the hassle of installation. Having a USB extension or power extension handy might help on the day. An aside, buying a second controller is a great move. Controllers are something of a grudge purchase, but a great joy to have available. Make it easy for them to share their new thing, if it’s possible.

I remember getting a new living room TV, and setting it up (with people gathered around)... only for it to be dead on arrival. I felt like I had done something wrong and I had to check error codes... urgh. We had to wait a week for the replacement.

I’m happy that games like this can succeed. It’s one of the games I won’t play because of the creator’s behaviour. Committing to Jontron’s inclusion was the icing on the cake. I think it’s unfair to antagonise people for allowing their moral compass to guide which work they support. People are free to engage with works by anyone they wish, but I think we’d all be better off if we could respect people’s reasons for avoiding a product.

Long time VRs sceptic here, but I’ve decided to buy one for myself because of the buzz surrounding Astro Bot. Planning on getting the Starter pack, Astro Bot, Moss, Rez, Tetris Effect. I’m also interested in Eagle Flight. I don’t have PS Pro, and I gave my Move controller to a friend when he got PSVR two years ago. My one VR experience was an Oculus DK1 playing one of the demo rooms. I remember tapping the stick forward, accidentally causing a horrible lunge that made me feel sick for hours afterwards. I haven’t tried PSVR yet but I truly hope this doesn’t happen again. Do people still buy sickness drugs to help this? Is there a list of VR games in the EU sale? Any big recommendations?

I was just looking into PSVR for the first time, and several of the guides talk about the importance of good 3D headphones. I'm a living room only gamer and I never play multiplayer. I have a pair of cheap £15 Sony headphones that I plug into my PS controller sometimes, and a few pairs of cheap earbuds I use to watch Youtube on my iPad. Nothing fancy. - How much should people pay for headphones? - Is 3D important, and does it really work? - Do wireless headphones have any lag and does that confuse the effect with VR? - Any regrets about the headphones you bought? Any recommendations for headphones for VR, especially on the cheaper end of the spectrum?

Surface Book 2 is mid-cycle now, so it'll definitely see a revision in 2019, but it's hard to judge when. The power hungry 15" version is a big problem and I expect there is some pressure to fix that. It's even a problem with the Surface Dock, which provides less power than the SB2 needs. On the plus side the SB2 battery is pretty good, but it might be a bad choice if you're working in UE4 all day. It's still a great machine, especially if you can get a good deal for one. I was originally planning to get a SB2 as my next machine but I ended up choosing a modest spec Pro 6 instead. I don't need the power and I like the lightweight form factor.

This is complicated. Everyone is right. I love unlocking characters and I think I would enjoy this version of Smash much more than the few hours I spent hating Smash Wii U. My negative experience with single player on Wii U means I won’t buy or play this game. I’d really like to see a branching story/adventure or something that required me to use all of the characters for a little while. I think Mortal Kombat 9 does this. But it also sucks to not have access to the characters you want for tournaments etc etc. I think a creative compromise would be selling a paid ‘unlock card’ with amiibo style NFC chip. Pass the card around during multiplayer games. Have the unlock necessary each play session. Don’t want to buy the card? Unlock them yourself.

The only really great Katamari games are We <3 Katamari and the first game. The level design and game structure isn’t there for the later titles, and it needs to be a fully Keita Takahashi game. Thread Steams "Competitors"
I welcome a serious competitor to Steam. I’ll keep it simple and list some things I’d like to see different. 1. Curated lists with summaries. Apple does a great job of writing lists and articles about games, themes, or genres. 2. Less of a ‘gamer-bro’ aesthetic. The current aesthetic is much cleaner than the military-green look it had in the past, but I’d like something brighter and friendlier. Unfortunately Epic are unlikely to deliver on this. 3. Make room for other types of player. Big Fish Games still have an active game launcher and storefront for casual games, and their game selection is so different to steam’s. I would love a PC storefront that made better room for players that love Puzzlescript or Roguelikes or Pico-8 or Hidden Object. Puzzle games have always had a difficult time on Steam. 4. Performance prediction. An API that lets players see how the game runs on similar spec hardware. I have bought games and been denied refunds from Steam in the past because they refused to run properly on my laptop hardware. 5. An opt out for crap like ‘trading cards’. I’ve always hated these shady bonus items and the ability to sell them only makes it worse. 6. A better Big Picture mode For the last three years I’ve done 95% of my PC gaming on my couch with a gamepad. Lots of games still fail despite being listed as gamepad compatible, and ‘lists’ don’t work properly on the Big Picture Store. Deleting games is fiddly, and often newly purchased items don’t show up. 7. Some features on players and real world events. Articles about big events in gaming, like PAX shows, Gaymer X and charity events would a really nice, especially if they can feature human beings with faces and lives. The vacuum is where all the poison brews. Steam is so much better than it used to be, but it always felt like it was designed for someone else. Launching Steam and seeing yet another military game or resource sim shoved in my face has always underlined how Steam favours certain types of gamer.

Thread This might seem like a dumb question but, like, what's good level design?
The critical path for progress is one important aspect that can spoil or save an otherwise excellent map. Hub and spoke design can be tiring but it’s useful to compartmentalise micro challenges. Red herrings for puzzles and progress should be dealt sparingly, but affording partial success is better than roadblocks. Keep the player playing and don’t punish them for wanting to untangle your knot. Recontextualising an area can be a greater sense of progress than a new area, for example running over the rooftops of an area where you were previously limited to the street level. There’s a lot to this topic, and I’m not an expert on level design. I haven’t even dipped into the art and aesthetic design. Planning for line of sight is a huge pain but really helps 3D games when done properly. Of course third person cameras can ruin your design plans, as that needs to be treated like another’s player.

My favourite oldest example of this problem is Samba de Amigo 2000. A large number of the songs in the game could not be unlocked through gameplay. They were unlocked by files on the VMU that could only be downloaded via the web browser. This makes the VMU with these files on it a precious ticking time bomb. My general feeling with this is that I’m very disappointed that physical disc copies on consoles are so meaningless, and the same thing happened with PC gaming. Microsoft imply the i7 has a better GPU, but they both have a UHD 620. You'll get better graphics out of the i7 inevitably, but whatever counts as a GPU in this chip doesn't seem to be the determining factor. The i7 units for every generation seem to struggle more as they're bumping up against heat and battery. Looking forward to getting my 8GB i5 unit on Tuesday! Still trying to decide whether to treat myself to a new keyboard.

Thread Microsoft Surface |OT| - Style, Performance, and Creativity in a Variety of Windows 10 Hardware
I'm using a Surface Pro 4 i5 with 4GB RAM right now, and have used it as my main PC every day for 3 years. I have to babysit the RAM a bit, but I quickly learned to stop using memory hog software and find alternatives. Your experience will probably come down to questions like "am I willing to stop using Chrome and use another browser, like Opera?" I really like the Surface Go, but that baby keyboard will take some getting used to.

Thread Buying a videogame console for one single game is a good idea (Astrobot Thread)
I’m one of the people whose first VR experience made them sick for a whole afternoon, and I even feel awkward wearing headphones while playing games with other people in the house. Even if PSVR was <£100 I’m pretty sure, at this point in my life, I simply wouldn’t want PSVR in my living room. It’s normal for people’s needs and outlays to vary over time with this hobby. Some years I have spent a huge amount, and other years I’ll buy literally nothing but handheld games. I’m interested to see where VR ends up in 10 years.

As someone that uses their Surface Pro daily I would hate to see it lose the easy magnetic omnidirectional power cable. I hope they add USB C down the line but maybe instead of DisplayPort, not power. Losing MagSafe was terrible for Apple laptops. ‘Reporters’ said the Surface Pro would get a major design rehaul every year since 2015. The launch of the Surface Go solidifies their commitment to this line IMO.

When I bought my SP4 it was on a whim to see if I might use it for drawing. I eventually sold my main PC and it became my only computer, so it gets used with Unity, Blender, Affinity Designer and others. That 4GB RAM and storage hurts though so it’s time to treat myself. I might use miracast to use the SP4 as an external monitor.

Just placed my pre-order for an i5 8GB Surface Pro 6 with 256GB SSD. I opted for the black finish, mostly because I'm bored of seeing so many SP3 and SP4 models out and about. Looks like the , just like 2017. I'm typing this on my i5 4GB Surface Pro 4 which has punched above its weight and served me well for 3 years. The lack of new ports on the new machines is disappointing, but I'm currently using the Surface Dock so I greatly appreciate the magnetic connector there.

I’m ready for the SP6 whenever they announce UK dates and prices for different specs. My trusty 4GB SP4 has been used every day for years and I’ve been really happy with it. Are the keyboards the same as SP5?

SNK are truly a shadow of their formal self. Presumably none of the original staff there. Always weird to see companies that trade off the legacy work done by others. As for clicky sticks, they could have commissioned Exar.

Thread Steam Blog: Controller gaming on PC
I had a bumpy time with PC gaming until I bought a dedicated Alienware Alpha thing connected to my TV. Regarding DS4 support on PC, I had to give up. I had a bumpy time with the official Sony wireless adapter, and using Bluetooth on the PS4 pad was never reliable. Shame, because using DS4windows to swipe between mapping was useful. I got an Xbox One pad which works perfectly with Bluetooth and has the best dpad I’ve ever used. Incredible given the 10 years of the 360 having an atrocity beneath the analogue stick. Shame PC gaming is still a bit of a pain with games not working properly in one way or another. I’m really glad I have the option though.

Thread 45 Year Old Man Threatens to Kill Child After Losing in Fortnite
Abusive players are the reason I have never stuck with online gaming. I used to report people in 2006 thinking it would be taken seriously. With the exception of Splatoon and Animal Crossing, I’ve played less than 15 hours of online games. At this point it’s unlikely I will start playing online games, and that’s simply because they’ve had more than a decade where abusive players run rampant and are rewarded for being awful to other people.

‘Traumatised’ isn’t necessarily right. How about the kid being conditioned to this behaviour as acceptable and commonplace? A lot of my worst behaviour as a teen was abusive behaviour I saw from other people IRL, and the abusers always won.

Thread Nintendo Switch now supports digital game sharing amongst multiple consoles
The circumstance I'm curious about is the sharing of content within a household. In my household all the games on the Switch here bought on my account, but my partner plays them too. If she gets her own switch can she play 'my' games on anything but the primary device? It would be a different user login. Is the pausing per-game, any-game, or per-account?

Urgh, definitely not what I was hoping for from a new classic controller. Are the 8bitdo controllers still laggy and unable to work as a primary gamepad? I haven’t tried mine since last year but it was bad. The dpad on the SNES pad is bad too.

Thread I'm not crazy about the Switch -- Am I broken?
I’ve been in the same boat as OP this year, especially as I don’t enjoy online multiplayer games like Splatoon, and I still actively play 3DS. I’ve been playing Picross 3D round 2 for years, lol. I’ve finally found that as the game that makes the Switch work for my life situation. It’s a game where I can turn off most/all of the sound and play while my gf is watching TV or I’m in bed in the morning. Normally I can’t stand to turn off the sound, but here it works. Almost every Nintendo console gets these weird droughts, so I’m used to it by now. The Wii U was an exception, as it was born into a death spiral!

Thread “Generic white dude video game protagonist.” How does this trend/phrase make you feel?
It’s a useful phrase. I’ve avoided lots of games in the last decade because I’m so tired of bland games about a heroic murderous white dude. Even though Mass Effect let you redesign your character, I was definitely put off by all the marketing material or reviews featuring Captain White-Bro. I never bought or played Mass Effect as a result. Boring white guy protags feel like code for ‘we don’t think the players have much imagination’. Give us some trans characters and POC, you cowards.

Thread “Generic white dude video game protagonist.” How does this trend/phrase make you feel?
I’ve worked on projects in the past where the concept artists literally to design any female characters and had to scramble to add them towards the end of the project. I also worked on a project where the optional female player character had critical control bugs that went unnoticed because the Mr. Whiteman was ‘default’.
