Thread PS5 ends the button logic of O for accept, X for cancel for Asia/Japan
Oh great, it's one of those people who thinks they speak for everyone. I was careful with my vocabulary with words like "many" (as opposed to "all") and "may" (as opposed to "will"). Also, Japanese people don't own their language. Many non-Japanese who've expressed concerns about this live in Japan like native-born people, speak the language and function every day like the average Japanese person. This affects them as much as it does anyone else. That you used the word "others" in your post to dismiss my commentary is emblematic of the well-documented xenophobia that people here in Japan have to deal with.

Thread Capcom: "We have Dev plans on a new Monster Hunter targeted to middle-high school kids, like PSP entries did"
The context behind the question is rooted in the fact the PSP MH games were well known for their popularity on middle school playgrounds. Kids would gather with their PSPs during recess and have play sessions. Of course the PSP was popular with older audiences as well, but the middle school social element was the key to helping MHP3 become the best selling third party game in Japan ever on any platform. The 3DS games continued this to a large extent over multiple releases, but World was unable to recapture this key demographic (and hence its relatively lower sales in Japan). If there’s a MH targeting middle school students, it needs to be on Switch. Mobile won’t work because the experience won’t be true to the series and the monetization would likely force it to be more like a gacha title rather than a traditional $60 game people pay for.

Thread Japan's analog government struggles to accept anything online
I live about 5 minutes away from the station, between Ebisu Garden Place and Meiji-dori (toward Hiroo). It's a pricey, but breathtaking neighborhood to live in. The location is very convenient without the baggage of becoming a major train hub like Shibuya next door; the fact the Shonan Shinjuku Line and Saikyo Line stop here mean I can get to far flung areas in other prefectures without changing trains. The amount of international restaurants never ceases to amaze me: French cuisine, , , , , , Shake Shack, Din Tai Fung, Sarutahiko Coffee, Blue Bottle Coffee, etc. There's so much to do that I rarely have to leave the neighborhood unless I have shopping to do in Shibuya or perhaps Shinjuku. I guess the main takeaway is that Ebisu is great as someone like me who loves international environments. It's hard for me to get homesick when I live n Ebisu.

Never understood the complaint about coins. You should never have more than one ¥500, four ¥100, four ¥1, one ¥5 and one ¥50 coin on your person at any given time. The coins are denominated so you can receive the most efficient change possible. (i.e. giving ¥1104 for a ¥1099 transaction so you get a ¥5 coin back while offloading four ¥1 coins)

Thread Japan's analog government struggles to accept anything online
I'm actually fairly satisfied with where Japan is in terms of its use of technology for payments and bureaucratic matters. The government recently announced a stimulus package of ¥100,000 per person, and I was able to do the entirety of the registration on a phone app. The most remarkable thing about the process was that I had to use my iPhone's NFC tech as a card reader for my (Japanese equivalent of a) social security card. I had my money in 10 days. On payments, a very large number of shops in Tokyo and other large cities now accept a multitude of digital payments, not just credit cards. Many are smartphone compatible and work with barcodes or NFC. Some small privately owned businesses still accept cash only due to the cutthroat margins they operate on, but these are certainly a minority now. (Not sure about the countryside) There is still a long way to go but I think Japan will get there eventually.

Thread Should Sony be worried about their decreasing sales in Japan?
I don’t think this is a complete explanation of the phenomenon. The OG Switch, despite its historically high pricing for the handheld realm, is handily outselling the Switch Lite, which itself seems to have only gotten a second windfall recently after muted sales due to shortages of said OG model. The Switch has a shot at becoming the best selling game hardware globally (i.e., above PS4) because it’s doing phenomenal numbers everywhere INCLUDING Japan.

Hilarious to see people say Japan is irrelevant as a market when Switch is on track to sell around 25 million units there, which if achieved would be a record for any home console and second only to the DS for handheld devices. Going back to the PS3 vs 360, the only reason the PS3 came out ahead in the event by a 3-4 million units was because the PS3 outsold 360 in Japan by 9 million units. In the present day, that Sony and Microsoft have failed to appeal to this large market isn't Japan's fault at all.

If I recall correctly: 1) First issue was kernel panics within weeks of purchase 2) Second issue was also kernel panics 3) Third issue was the trackpad becoming unresponsive And then keyboard issues interspersed throughout. It’s frustrating because had I done my repairs in California, Apple would have just given me a new unit after the third fault, while Apple Japan is particular about what causes issues and whether or not the lemon rule applies. The best I could do after the second repair was have them prioritize me in the queue because losing my MacBook Pro for a year has repercussions for my job.

I buy every console as a matter of personal policy, but I typically "main" the one with the best performing third party games (primarily Capcom games). This gen, that was the PS4, but after the Pro and XB1X came out, the positions reversed. I built my first gaming PC last year and can get even better performance from that, so I think I can say I've "switched" to PC. As far as next gen consoles are concerned, I would imagine the Series X wins most of my console-related commitments due to its close ties with the PC. I can imagine having my PC in the bedroom/office and XSX in the living room, for example.

When it came to PS2, it was actually only $40 (with a $50 steelbook LE). On Wii, it was $30, while everything else after that was $20 (PS3, 360, XB1, PS4) or $30 (Switch lol). Meanwhile, RE5 was a $60 game with even higher priced LEs. Gold Edition was $50 as well.

CV is not a side story. It's directly followed up on in both Darkside Chronicles and RE5. RE3 meanwhile has no true direct successor to its specific plotline. The remake might set something up on that end, but RE3 is definitely more of a footnote in the RE chronology than CV is.

RE4’s story is non-invasive. It doesn’t harm the gameplay at all. There isn’t a filler character in the game at all. Given how much RE4 changed things for the series, the story structure is probably the one element that remained intact. Other RE games like Revelations or even CV have been criticized due to their story. I agree that in those games, the plot and cutscenes can be detrimental to the enjoyment of the game. With RE4, I just cannot see how its story can be seen in remotely the same light.

You definitely should take your own thoughts and values as the most important thing to yourself. No one is saying you're wrong. However, I stick by my belief that I've never seen any analysis critical of RE4 that was actually a well-written, well-reasoned and convincing take on the game. I can disagree with something but see where someone is coming from. But with RE4's criticism, it gravitates towards "it's not RE" or "it's not horror" or "not my cup of tea." The game isn't technically broken. It has a huge amount of variety. It gives players different choices. Its length gives players an unbelievable bang for their buck. There are three different mini-games that are well-implemented. When it came out 13 years ago, it was groundbreaking. Maybe technical analysis doesn't interest you, but it's relevant whether you like it or not.

Thread Anybody here that dislikes Resident Evil 4?
I personally judge a video game story by how well it complements the gameplay universe. Not every game can have a profound literary story like Silent Hill 2. With RE4, the story plays into the universe very well -- every character serves a specific purpose, it feeds into the massive variety of gameplay offered (Cabin Siege, Krauser fight, Ashley sniper rifle areas) and the screen time among all characters is mostly balanced. If someone criticizes a game, I expect to read reasonable analysis that uses technical aspects or specific design decisions to support the argument. The most recent parallel I can draw is people criticizing Odyssey for having "uninteresting level design." Such comments are just masking the fact the person would have preferred another Galaxy or 3D Land/World-like game.

Even after 13 years, I’ve yet to read any good analysis on why RE4 isn’t a good game. Almost all of the few negative comments out there come down to personal taste rather than an objective look at why the game has technical flaws. Even today I’m just astounded at what RE4 does in just one game. Not only is it incredibly entertaining, but it’s well rounded with strong pacing and variety. It rewards you for exploring, it rewards you for item management, and it rewards you for being tactical. All under an amazingly balanced system. It’s remarkable how no one has really been able to bring the same breadth to a single game. Super Mario Odyssey might be the only other game to really do it for me.

Technically you can go with either one, as certain supplemental materials make references to the original, but in practice the average person only needs to pay attention to REmake and now REmake 2. Some of the references to RE1 in recent times are more like minor Easter eggs, in-game jokes or flat out oversights rather than any definitive stance on how the RE story must play out. People need to calm the fuck down. The dangers of COVID-19, perceived or actual, are not an excuse for all rationality to be thrown out the window on either side and for people to personally insult others. Sony was well within their rights to withdraw from PAX East. I hope (and personally believe) they used a decision-making process that was rational and supported by sound evidence and one that took into account the wishes of their employees. Even if it might be an overreaction, as long as the company made the decision fairly, I respect them for it. I also have concerns about the inevitable domino effect Sony’s move will have on people’s perceptions of COVID-19. If a large company makes an important decision based on unsupported science or misinterpreting information from the WHO or any other organization, that will have negative social consequences as well (as xenophobic reactions have shown). I choose to believe Sony made this in good faith but the potential consequences are worth mentioning.

I guess by that definition (that because CV didn't have RE3's features, therefore it was a step back), REmake and RE0 were also seen as a step back from RE3 because they too didn't include its ? Or that CV's longer and more relevant narrative, stronger characterization, more thematic puzzles, first person aiming, higher number of bosses, wider weapon/enemy/environment variety meant nothing to the fanbase back then? This is a flawed way to look at CV's reception. Games series sales are very cyclical and go through ups and downs, which can be, but are not necessarily tied to game quality. By the time CV rolled around, the survival horror genre was no longer new or original. There was more competition from games like Silent Hill, Parasite Eve, Fatal Frame, and even Capcom's other games like Onimusha and DMC. CV for Dreamcast launched when the system had a tiny userbase, while CVX for PS2 launched right as games like GTAIII, MGS2, SH2, Halo, and so forth were hitting, and not long before REmake. Again, I'm not remotely arguing that CV wasn't some unflawed gem that everyone liked, but and found great examples of user apathy with titles like Resident Evil Zero, the moving of RE4 to GameCube, and so forth, yet no one I spoke to and no sources from the time I looked into even hinted that CV was a cursed game.

Capcom as a whole had a rocky generation, but that goes beyond anything specific to CV and more to Capcom as a company. To use CV's sales against it despite its performance relative to other games (especially with little evidence that repeat sales contributing to overperformance) is just cherry picking. Besides, if the game were awful, who would repurchase it? If the Dreamcast game was truly a terribly received title, how did the PS2 version outdo it? The answer is because your narrative simply doesn't hold scrutiny when examined under the evidence we have now.

CVX on PS2 was reviewed 17 months after the Dreamcast launch, and in many cases ports get lower scores than their original versions. On that note, the PS2 version has an 84 on Metacritic overall. The CVX PS2 on IGN doesn’t actually prove your point, either. It spends time explaining that the game’s formula works for those who explicitly want it, which the reviewer admits to not being such a person. Nowhere does the review even remotely insinuate that CV was “the beginning of the fall of RE” like some of its most vocal critics have claimed.

I wish we could have gotten remasters of these so I don’t have to rely on old hardware to play them. Granted, with RE2 and RE3 now remade, their retellings are even more antiquated nowdays, which makes it harder to justify remastering them. (That and the lack of true mainstream motion controllers this gen)

It never got an RE game so I’ve never gone back to it after the 360 launched, but I picked one up at the NA launch. Never liked the design much, but its technical prowess over its competitors was very noticeable and it spearheaded the push toward integrated storage and broadband gaming. Have great memories playing DOA3 and Shenmue II on it.

Thread Resident Evil 2 and 3 remake were supposed to be bundled together but development took longer for 3 (Kinda Funny Games)
Everything from here on out is my own conjecture. I always believed, even back in the GameCube era, that remaking RE2 meant that RE3 would also have to be remade someday. The reasons should be obvious. I'm confident Capcom felt the exact same way, and thus when REmake 2 was greenlit, they explored ways in which they could explore RE2's connection with RE3 in a more fulfilling and expansive way than the original titles. Whether REmake 3 began official production as part of REmake 2 (i.e. asset creation, conceptual design, etc.) is difficult to specifically assess (unless you're inside Capcom) because ideas get thrown around, tabled and resurrected all the time. At its most basic, Imran could be referring to a bunch of ideas discussed in a meeting somewhere. At its most extensive, it could potentially mean that parts of REmake 2 were tabled for a future project like the game coming out on April 3, 2020. I personally believe it's somewhere in between the two extremes, but I stress that's just my own assumption. Maybe after REmake 3 comes out, Capcom will talk about it more like how they were open with REmake 2.

I wanted to mention that there is no real equivalent this year to the PayPay 20% cashback deal that sent Japanese retail into a frenzy last year. That, plus the recent tax hike, Chinese Switch launch and no Smash equivalent might weigh on sales growth for consoles and games this month. It always seemed like numbers of Chinese tourists were buying Switches at major electronics stores at regular intervals. It's impossible for us to know how large that market is if it's even remotely sizeable, but it's interesting to see if the real Chinese launch will have any effect whatsoever.

Imran is actually right on the money here. The idea at the beginning of REmake 2’s development was to incorporate both RE2 and RE3’s content into a single coherent Raccoon City experience. That changed early on as the team decided to do only RE2. REmake 3 was obviously greenlit as its own project later down the line.

Bombas are my new favorite brand of socks. I recently had a very positive customer service experience with them. I recently ordered a few pairs of their Men's Calf Socks and they were a lot longer than I thought they would be for some reason. I requested an exchange (and offered to pay for return shipping) but they simply just offered to replace them with Mid-Calf versions at no extra cost, plus letting me keep what I ordered previously. They're expensive, but so far I've been impressed with them. They fit my feet comfortably, are made of strong materials, have appealing designs and have survived a few washes without any issues whatsoever. No odors, either!

I finally beat the game and enjoyed it for the most part, but the last stretch in Niaowu before the Old Castle tested my patience. Having to seek out multiple martial artists, then having to figure out what that guy's martial arts style way, then spending days gambling/farming herbs to earn 5000 yuan only to have to fight all of the ranked fighters in the dojo... It's in this stretch of the game that virtually nothing story-related happens. It made me realize that I put up with Shenmue's weird gameplay because the story and world are compelling enough to offset that. Absent any real story developments, Shenmue actually falls apart into something uninteresting. I can only assume they were trying to prolong the game, but it had me seriously questioning my love for Shenmue during the last two decades. Other thoughts:

Thread Super Smash Bros Ulimate has 19 white male characters (6 of which are blue eyed / blonde hair), and 0 women of color
I think part of the issue with this discourse is that the term "POC" is an American-centric concept born out of US identity politics. I looked to see if POC could even be translated into Japanese and there currently isn't an accepted phrase for it; they simply translate it was "non-White person" or "non-North American/European person," which doesn't have the same nuance at all. Smash Bros. is a game developed in Japan by Japanese people who don't have the same lens as the US. In fact, Japan has its own nuanced identity politics, for example with ethnic Koreans living in the country for 3-4 generations and still being considered outside of mainstream society. This itself is immediately at odds with US identity politics that group all Asians into (more or less) one category. Nintendo is course a global company and should behave as such, but I'm not sure forcing the issue from a heavily US-based perspective is an approach that will work here.

I don't necessarily agree with every point myself, but I think these are fair assessments in general. REmake 2 is unusual in that it's the latest game in the series but really goes back to the basics. It adopts the RE4 template sparingly, but virtually none of the innovations in RE5/6/Rev 1/Rev 2 have made it in, even if many of them (like dodging) would have been acceptable inclusions. I can't wait to see where Capcom goes in the future with this formula -- there's plenty of room to try a bunch of different things.

Saw it last night in Vegas in IMAX. Enjoyed most of the modern sensibilities it brought to the same characters, namely giving more screen time to the lionesses, giving Simba a new VA and making the hyenas more sympathetic than in the original. The biggest criticism I have is that very little has changed from the original material. Some of the changes, like the ones above, make sense. But I feel as though Aladdin had more all around, making for a more surprising film in the context of a CG/live action remake. The audience clapped after it was over, funny enough - I haven't experienced anything like that since in a US movie theater myself until today.

I'm not sure why people think RE4's announcement qualifies anywhere near impacting, even if we consider both the reception at the time and historical hindsight: 1. It still came out on GC first by about 10 months 2. RE fans still had reason to hang onto their GameCubes with REmake and RE0 3. The GC version was much better technologically 4. Capcom did not announce any features for the PS2 port until E3 2005, months after the game hit 5. The game showed up on Wii just 2.5 years later and did even better on there 6. GC sales were dying by this point and even RE4 couldn't have been expected to save it RE4's PS2 announcement was a minor blip in Nintendo's history. FF7 takes the cake for sure.

Thread Nicki Minaj is going to perform in Saudi Arabia
The biggest difference between the US and Saudi Arabia, South Africa and other oppressive regimes is that the US's current abuses are, to a very notable and traceable extent, a product of its own citizens' making. When you vote for the Republican Party or decide to stay home because the Democratic frontrunner doesn't meet your liberal litmus test, things like concentration camps, draconian abortion laws, threats to eliminate government-funded health care, inaction on gun control, and etc. all slowly but surely become reality. In the US, voting is a power that can and will lead to change. But in Saudi Arabia, the average person just doesn't have the same clout to push for change. I've been to Saudi Arabia 3 times (all before Khashoggi) to accompany Japanese game creators there (one of them was a woman, even!). The reason they agreed to go is because they simply wanted to meet ordinary Saudi Arabian youth and gamers. They know Arab gamers are passionate through interactions with people from other GCC/Arab nations, so they didn't want to pass up the opportunity to meet and potentially inspire these people, many of whom want to become game creators themselves. None of them supported the terrible things their government was doing. A handful of them even supported things like LGBT rights in the West, others were in the closet themselves. Others wanted to flee to the West or Japan themselves one day. I don't think these ordinary people should be forgotten. Not saying that my situation is the same as Nicki Minaj or the WWE's, but it's worth thinking about it from that lens.

I think those two would make a pretty big impact. I have a feeling the last two fighters, or at least one of them, will be from companies that don’t have a rep at all yet. So far, we’ve had Atlus, Enix and Microsoft (even if technically, the first two are represented via their parent companies and/or current brands). But if the concept of new representation holds, we can see anything from Koei Tecmo, Level 5, From Software, SNK, etc.

Aladdin has just grossed ¥5,515,400,000 in the Japanese box office, with 3,856,800 tickets sold. That's approximately $51 million in 3 weeks. According to the source, that's actually on par with Frozen, which ($249m in Japan) and ahead of Beauty and the Beast ($110m in 2017). Toy Story 4 isn't coming to Japan until next month, although Spider-Man Far From Home debuts there first (for once), so it should continue to do strong numbers in the country. Perhaps it can be just enough to get it closer to $1 billion than $900m.

Japan's economic influence goes way beyond just what it manufactures, imports and exports. Japanese investments in global assets are gigantic. Should a natural disaster greater than 3/11 occur, any sudden unwinding would destabilize global markets on a scale potentially magnitudes greater than seen in the fall of Lehman. A milder version of this actually happened in the days following 3/11, when the Yen shot up to historic highs and the US and Europe needed to intervene to avert a disaster. Should Japan be taken out of the equation, everyone will be in a world of hurt. People were worried about Greece just a few years ago; Japan would be catastrophic by comparison.

Thread How the hell are airplane prices decided on?
City pair trumps distance and number of connections. In my case, two city pairs highly relevant in my life are Tokyo-HND-LAX and HND-SFO. (Or from NRT, but no sane person would choose Narita over Haneda). Tokyo-LA has 9 flights a day. Tokyo-SF has 4 (5 if you include a single flight from San Jose). Often, Tokyo-SF can be $1500 while Tokyo-LA can be as low as $600 (Tokyo-SF might connect in LAX and Tokyo-LA might connect in SFO). Why? Because demand on Tokyo-SF relative to supply means the market can support nearly or more than double the price of Tokyo-LAX. The solution to the above problem is simply to book SFO-LAX and LAX-HND on separate tickets. Airlines usually don’t mind but the gap between tickets needs to be large enough to work. The same airline/airline alliance is favorable in case of delays. Your mileage may vary. Another example: LA-Shanghai is often much cheaper than LA-Tokyo.

Japan’s bigger theaters (especially in Tokyo) are down to a handful of screenings per day (3-5). Looks like Japan’s contribution (which is relatively small to begin with but it’s a leggy market and the third largest worldwide) is coming to a close. It’s funny; if Japan were into MCU like they are with Star Wars or other Disney films, then it would probably be enough to overtake Avatar in the long run.

By reducing RE4’s advantages to a mere “popularity contest” shows that you’re continuing to misunderstand what others and I have been trying to say. There is no true “argument” being made here by people who support RE4. They’re simply observations about real things that have actually occurred. If you say you’re unconvinced, that doesn’t change the fact that CliffyB cites RE4 as one of his main influences, or that EA altered the development and marketing cycle of a greenlit game in order to go after the market RE4 brought. Coming up with arbitrary things like “well RE4 didn’t go beyond its genre” is completely irrelevant to the sole question of influence and that’s why you’re not finding many similar viewpoints. Calling it a popularity contest is just a means to hand wave a set of very important factors at play.

Influence comes down to how people perceive the impact on their creative process. There is an easily verifiable and well-recorded trail of the influence RE4 has had on video game culture. Well-renowned creators have explained it in interviews and dev talks. It broke the post count record on NeoGAF back in early 2005 when the game came out. Resident Evil 4 continues to sell well even if relatively underwhelming remasters come out on modern platforms. Its original release has a 96 on Metacritic versus an 89 for Demon's Souls. RE4 has 10 GOTY awards to its name. Demon's Souls has 2. I don't want to take away from Demon's Souls' success, but understandably there's little about the game that will make people feel compelled to rank it above RE4.

Thread Gun to your head - Which game is more influential - Resident Evil 4 or Demon Souls?
You are once again misunderstanding the point. In no way am I implying that Demon's Souls is worse than, or a lesser product than RE4 because of ratings or sales. I'm just giving you a number of reasons why it continues to hold a very high level of relevance, and therefore influence, in present-day gaming discourse. All the factors I mentioned aren't barometers; they're evidence of RE4's impact. Such impressive accolades don't exist in isolation. You're right that unpopular games can and have had influence, but that's irrelevant since both games are popular. As a result, 81.9% of voters in this thread so far see RE4 as more influential than Demon's Souls. We haven't collectively lost our minds and we are certainly not grossly misinformed. We can all see what RE4 has contributed to video gaming; we can measure it throughout history. Demon's Souls clearly doesn't wield that kind of influence. Lastly, your mentioning of SFII/FFVII is strange because I'm not the one who originally argued that Demon's Souls is more influential because, among other things, its influence extends beyond its own genre. I've been arguing this whole time that RE4 (and SFII and any game for that matter) doesn't need to spill over into other genres in order to be more influential than other games.

This is obviously subjective to an extent, but your argument for the messaging system is falling on deaf ears because to a majority of gamers and creators, it has nowhere near as much meaning to them as the myriad of things RE4 brought to the table. I haven't played Demon Souls, so I couldn't tell you whether it (including its messaging system) started a continuous, traceable trend in an entire video game genre as RE4 did. I have no idea whether Demon Souls caused developers of upcoming triple-A titles to do an about face and change their games up completely, like what happened when RE4 came out and led straight to Dead Space. Maybe RE4 doesn't do as much as some people would like beyond its genre. But that would be like saying Street Fighter II is less influential than Demon Souls because SFII has limited reach beyond fighting games. It's obviously a flawed argument.

Over the years, Capcom's charts have indicated that the entire recent RE catalog sells a good number of copies a year, including the Revelations games and the remasters of RE and RE0. I would guess some of these sales come from newcomers to RE who end up buying multiple games -- RE6 is a unique and distinct part of the series that I think if one were to jump in starting with either RE or RE4, you might as well play RE6, as well, before you get to RE7 and onward. Basically, there's a good chance RE6 still sells on the back of people who buy multiple RE games at once.

Just the mere notion of keeping a mental checklist of what’s safe and what isn’t and when such advice is applicable is enough to turn some people off entirely. I can’t blame them for turning to Uber and Lyft. As for me, I live in Tokyo now. I never have to worry about public transport safety. Uber is also not a thing here because cabs are ubiquitous and usually offer great service. I'm from SF and even though I can take care of myself, I can never shake off the feeling that you can never be too careful. That just isn't a thing when riding Uber and Lyft. It's not. You're misinterpreting what Takeuchi is saying, as well as what actually transpired in the game's development, to fit your perspective. If you put the game in a timeline, you'll see why. Sheva was planned in the game from the beginning. That places her conceptualization in 2005 or early 2006 at the latest. RE5 was revealed in earnest at E3 2007. That trailer lacked Sheva, but only because they weren't ready to reveal that the game was a co-op title. If Capcom could foresee a racist backlash in 2005, then logically they would never have revealed the E3 2007 trailer in the way that they did. It doesn't make sense -- to foresee racial backlash by designing a character to combat that, but not show the actual character in the first and defining reveal. The truth is Capcom designed a great character in Sheva in an organic and logical manner. Say what you will about how Japanese games have represented women and POCs, but Sheva as a character is probably the last thing I would ever use as a sign of Capcom's misrepresentation or pandering.

Yeah, that's not proof they came up with Sheva specifically to address the backlash they received after E3 2007. She was always part of the game's concept and an essential part of the plot for authenticity. The game takes place in Africa and features an African co-protagonist. That's not a stretch in any way to find an excuse to be more inclusive.

If we need to be broader, I would say my favorite places in Calfornia are: 1. The Peninsula (basically everywhere between SF and SJ) 2. San Francisco proper 3. Orange County (Anaheim) 4. Because we, the public, don't actually know what their precise business model actually is. Publically releasing sales figures is of limited utility in the grand scheme of things. Their public figures tell us very little regarding revenue, precise shipment data, regional breakdowns of sales, demographics, and so forth. I assume MC makes much of that data available to subscribers, possibly faster than the others. In fact, it was that seemed to prompt MC to change its mind and begin offering that data behind a paywall. The PS Classic doesn't suffer from 50Hz stigma here, and the catalog is thought to be quite good and representative of the PS1. Moreover, Japan rarely sees coordinated discounts like other countries. It’s not about whether any individual needs or benefits from having a review before launch. It’s about transparency and how review outlets fit within the greater marketing dynamic. Good or bad, reviews have their place in keeping consumers informed. A vast majority of reviewers, if not all, are professional enough not to leak or spoil games.

I don't personally agree with Capcom's approach to the Switch RE ports or Switch physical in general, but there was absolutely wrong with Kat's response. She gave the person an easily understandable response (as opposed to the usual PR speak), which was not only completely true but also supported with a recent real-world example.

Thread Breath of the Wild: 2 years have passed since its release, how do you feel about the game today?
I bought it at launch due to the lack of general choice. I couldn't get into it for many of the same reasons others have stated. I beat OoT last year (my first Zelda), so I decided to go back to BOTW and I found it quite engaging and interesting the second time around. Now that OoT familiarized me with the world of Hyrule, I find the world quite fun to explore. Still working through it at a relaxed pace. That said, I wouldn't give the game a 10/10 and it sure didn't deserve the GOTY awards it got when Mario Odyssey was released the same year.

Moving the goalposts, I see. Leon's success in Operation Javier, Degeneration and Vendetta is also proof that Leon succeeds in missions even without Ada. Krauser backed him up in Operation Javier, he practically succeeded on his own in Degeneration, and Nadia saved him in Vendetta -- all three very much in the same vein as the half-dozen times Chris was saved in the series. Also, Ada wasn't "watching Leon from afar" in RE6. She had her own issues to worry about.

BOW, not POW. The difference between Leon and Chris' scenarios is a matter of bad luck for Leon and bad judgment for Chris. Leon didn't get those civilians killed through negligence, lack of leadership, or emotionalism. He was trying to get to his next destination. Moreover, if he DIDN'T open the door, they all would have been nuked later on anyway. It's a terrible example of why Leon specifically did something terrible to endanger others. His actions in Vendetta are better examples. Meanwhile, Chris deviated from his goals and went on a suicidal mission. He ignored Piers and chose to keep going against a BOW, and ended up losing almost everyone else after that. That's bad judgment and different from Leon's situation.

Yeah, what you described with Leon is terrible luck. Chris couldn't have overestimated his soldiers' abilities. Fighting giant invisible snakes couldn't have possibly been part of the BSAA training protocol. Chris didn't know what he was up against and went in there anyway, against the advice of his second in command. Chris went on a power trip and people died for it. - Chris would have died in the Spencer Estate if Rebecca didn't save him from Plant 42. - Chris would have been eaten by wolves in Revelations if Jessica didn't back him up. - Chris would have been impaled by Wesker if it weren't for Jill jumping in to save him. - Chris would never have beaten Wesker by himself in Kijuju. Sheva played an equal role. - Chris would have died in RE6 if Piers didn't interfere. This happens at least 3 times during the game, including the ending. - Chris would have been squeezed to death by Arias in Vendetta if Leon didn't come in to save him at the last moment. Neither Leon nor Chris could succeed entirely on their own, so it's hilarious to suggest that Chris of all characters can. This is a tie for obvious reasons.I don't know; Simmons is actually much larger than Uroboros-Wesker.

OK, so Leon gets docked for opening a door that just happened to have a monster behind it, even if they (or any of the other people in the room) couldn't have known it would be there. Fine. On the flip side, Chris sent his entire platoon into a maze-like building to do battle with a giant, carnivorous and invisible snake that had already swallowed one of his team members. Given Chris' experience against the Yawn in the Spencer Mansion, he should have known that the first soldier was already dead. But he was so emotionally out of it that it didn't matter to him. OK then.

You forgot the part where Helena, another US government agent, did it. If the President were kidnapped under Leon's watchful eye, then that would be one thing. I'm not being defensive. I'm just stating facts. You called Leon a stalker. I literally summarized interaction he had with Ada that pointed to the contrary and you haven't come back with an actual counterargument. If you have one that proves Leon stalks people, I'm all ears! (Of course, the ironic part in such an argument is that in Chris' finest hour, he gets a bunch of men killed because he's the one who actually tried to stalk Ada. But I digress.) You brought up Leon's motor accidents as a counterexample to losing his cool. The two are fundamentally unrelated. If you said you preferred Chris because he suffers from less bad luck, I wouldn't disagree. But that's not what you said.

The number of people Leon’s gotten killed by losing his cool or falling hard for someone: 0 The number of people Chris’s gotten killed by losing his cool: at least 5 Leon gets a lot of criticism for either being too stoic or witty, but the inverse to that is a track record of professionalism. Chris wouldn’t have been able to kill Wesker without Sheva AND Jill’s help, and thus I’m not going to pretend Leon could do it by himself either.

The myth about stalking Ada was addressed above. It's untrue at worst and an exaggeration at best. Again, please tell me how Leon was supposed to prevent the President from being infected by an virus that was instigated as part of an elaborate plot by members of the President's own cabinet, including the National Security Adviser? Was Leon supposed to see the virus with a pair of magical goggles and suck it all up to protect the President?

Leon has a more impressive track record and I prefer his approach to problem solving. He’s generally more independent, far less emotionally vulnerable and more agile than Chris. It’s no wonder Leon is the one who protects the U.S. President. If Leon got to fight Wesker with Ada’s help, he’d be able to win without much issue. Chris has demonstrably better leadership skills, but that’s about it.

In RE4, Leon encounters Ada 5 times. The first time, he corners her and she runs away. He doesn't pursue her. The second time, they ride a boat together and she leaves; Leon continues his mission. The third time, Ada saves Leon from Krauser and he doesn't go after her. The fourth time, Ada distracts Saddler while Leon saves Ashley. And finally, Leon frees Ada from capture and then focuses on Saddler. In RE4, Leon stalks Ada a whopping 0 times. In RE6, Leon runs into her only twice; three times if you want to count the doppelganger. Ada runs off after the boss fight; Leon doesn't give chase. The second time, Leon chases "Ada" but only to grab information from her. In the end, Leon and Ada fight Simmons, but Leon specifically declines to go after her even when Helena offers him the chance. The number of times Leon stalks Ada in RE6: 0. In Damnation, Leon sees Ada twice, but she has virtually no influence on how he conducts the mission. He doesn't stalk her at all.How the hell is Leon specifically supposed to stop a specific person from being infected by an airborne virus? And how is his awful luck with cars specifically tied to losing it emotionally? Accidents happen, but Chris' negligence in RE6 is absolutely historical.Nothing to do with losing his cool, and in a city-wide outbreak, shit happens. Leon did what he had to do to ensure the mission was a success: destroy zombie dogs that could target specific people (aka the BSAA).

Thread Gamepass' existence is proof going digital only isn't the best thing to do.
The whole point of Game Pass is to keep the amount of content offered dynamic enough to encourage consistent subscriptions and to bring new users into the fold. If the catalog never changed (i.e. once a game is on there, it's on there permanently), then there will be fewer incentives to subscribe right now. A potential customer could put off a subscription into the future. But if you know that game you've been wanting to play but have been unwilling to purchase is about to go away, now would be the time to dive in. That's when other customer retention initiatives will kick in (new games, etc.). It's basically another approach in the spirit of PS+ and GWG. I do not see a connection between the threat of rescinding perpetual licenses for games purchased and the way the Game Pass catalog evolves from month to month.

Chris doesn't have an iconic outfit in the sense that Leon, Jill, Ada and Wesker do. Fans have traditionally been more focused on his actual body and more recently, his face. Thread Mr X has ruined Resi 2 Remake for me.
Stalker enemies will never make everyone happy. If they’re not too powerful or aggressive, then they’ll be accused of not meeting their potential. But if they’re too powerful and aggressive, certain players will become frustrated with that as well. If they’re not in the game, then you hear the typical criticisms against backtracking. Eschewing backtracking would lead to criticisms of linearity. Etc. Mr. X is a special case and in my opinion the best of the genre, alongside Jack Baker. Mr. X is ultimately in the game to mess with one’s familiarity with the RPD (either on the second time after visiting the basement or in the 2nd Run). He won’t kill you if you’re good, but you need to be tactical and have a good sense of direction and layout to avoid wasting healing items and time dealing with him.

Not that I necessarily agree with what the OP is asking, but actually, RE7 and RE2 are censored in Japan relative to the Western versions. That resulted in the US version of RE2 on PS4 breaking Amazon JP's Top 10 ranking. It's probably not a humungous number in the grand scheme of things, but clearly, there are gamers who prefer to see uncensored gore and will import the game at a higher price for the privilege. :p

Thread Resident Evil 7 is the fastest selling and one of the best-selling survival-horror game of all time
Any talk that in this thread that "RE7 was not a success" for Capcom is pure fiction. Capcom's only miscalculation regarding their expectations was indeed how much they would sell initially. Capcom, not having rebooted a series in a long time, didn't realize that it would take time for users to become adjusted to the new style, even for a brand as powerful as RE. They're now rewarded with one of their most consistently performing games on a quarterly basis. That it's currently budget priced is irrelevant - Capcom profited on day one, and Nintendo aside, games almost never stay full price for more than 6-9 months. RE7 is just behaving the way the RE catalog does post-release, except with better consistency and performance. RE7 is probably going to outsell RE5 and RE6 on last gen consoles within a year. That's a tremendous achievement.
