Yeah, like does he really expect to open America back up for business at a time where the virus is going to be exponentially worse than it is now? And even if he did would any state governor listen at that point? And not to mention that international travel will still be off limits. He is completely screwed. He has zero options. And he can’t seem to grapple with that fact.

First off, I'm so sorry you're going through this right now. I think you did all the right things, and since you don't have a fever, it could be related to something else. We just gotta take it day by day. Germany seems the best country in the world that is handling their patients, so you don't have to worry about that at least. Just get some rest, try watching some movies or doing something to preoccupy yourself and get better. Best of luck and please give us updates.

Thread Side-by-side official next gen flagship specs: Xbox Series X and PS5 spec sheets
Microsoft was never going to let Sony get the drop on them in terms of specs- doing so would have been a complete disaster and they weren't about to lose the power game again (despite being worlds apart on SSD speeds, which they obviously didn't see coming). That's why I think you'll see a huge gap in pricing for PS5/Xbox- At least $100, but likely $200-250. If MS can close that gap below $100 then that would be a massive, massive win. I don't think they will, and more importantly, I don't think they have to- all of their games will be multiplatform for Xbox consoles, and Game Pass allows them to target all three markets at once (the entry level Xbox One, the still-impressive Xbox X, and the high end premium Series X). We'll see what happens, but I think we're seeing Sony still go for the main consumer, and MS going for the power user who doesn't mind higher prices- and that's exactly where each audience is on their respective platforms.

In War of the Worlds a big electric storm fries every single piece of electronics in the city. You’re not going to get anywhere unless you have a sit down talk with her about it. Maybe she feels like she’s deserving of all the gifts you give her, but doesn’t think the same for you. Maybe that links back to some prior childhood thing you’re not thinking of. I’m not trying to justify her behavior, I’m just saying nothing good will come of this pattern of behavior for the next five years unless you actually talk to her about it.

Thread Kotaku: Microsoft Is Still Planning A Cheaper, Disc-Less Next-Gen Xbox
As a developer I'll tell you why I absolutely hate the idea of Lockhart. When you go into the next generation of any console, it is a premium buy-in. Some are ready day one to pay whatever price for next gen, whether that's $399 or $599. Let's talk about $599. The PS3 did not launch at $599. It launched at $499, with a SKU that was the same base hardware but lesser hard drive space, no extra media slots, and a few other extras that didn't make the cut. Growth of the PS3 didn't start happening until a new $499 SKU was introduced that had more limited backwards compatibility and features. Think about that for a minute: why would sales growth occur at $499 when the system launched at $499 to begin with? Because the new $499 system wasn't marketed as an "inferior" step down from the $599 version. It was the new PS3 SKU going forward. And because of that, people perceived the price at $499. Then we had the $399 PS3, and so on. Microsoft wants it all, day one. They want the premium super hardware buyers. They want the soccer moms. They want the kids who only get one big gift per year. They want the busy traveler that can only game in the cloud. They want the subscription junkie that only plays through Game Pass. They think they can get there with two SKUs: one super premium console that's maybe $499 and one lesser console for $399. The market won't see the $399 console because again, the next gen buy-in at launch is The perception will be the high end SKU is the true next gen console, and it won't be until that one declines in price that you'll see a bigger audience coming into the Xbox ecosystem. The ramifications for a lesser SKU are huge, just like the Xbox Core/Arcade. You're already seeing that now with Xbox One X/S- some recent games like the Outer Worlds look worse on XB1X than PS4 Pro because they're upscaled ports of XB1S. You will see a LOT of that if there are two SKUs on the market, guaranteed. The premium Xbox will be a worse console because of the existence of Lockhart. Meanwhile, the PS5 has nothing other than itself to scale for, and that's huge. But wait you say, Apple does this with the iPhone Pro and the standard colorful iPhones! You cannot bring the phone market into the console one. The comparison makes no sense. Eventually, at some point, you will need a new phone. You need it to basically live in this day and age. Sony and MS already have an uphill battle marketing and selling next gen because of the PS4 Pro and XB1X. It will be more difficult showing off amazing looking games because we're already playing amazing looking games. They have to get there with features, with quality of life features, with things that will cause this next gen to be a much slower start than I think this gen was. When your main selling point is less features at a lower price with Lockhart, you have a severe problem. I hope they don't do this. This feels like marketing and executives meddling in the video game space. It feels aimless and stupid.

Thread Starship Troopers is such a great movie
It really is the perfect movie. The third one has an ending that would fit right into the first movie, but it's unfortunate as most of the themes that the first movie was good to ignore pop up here (like a "crazy" mercenary group against the government and war, those wackos!) And the directing is so so bad. As for the second, hoo boy. Never saw the CGI sequels.

DF isn’t basing this solely on resolution. The detail settings are lower thank the Pro and the frame rate is constantly dipping down to as low as the 40s, whereas the Pro is locked at 60. The video title would still be correct even if the resolution was corrected.

I did play the very first version of Gungeon so maybe they've changed it, but I remember being out of money and having bad guns and feeling like I couldn't do anything to improve the run. I love love love love LOVE the Binding of Issac and I would warn you that this game is a very different kind from Issac. Part of the fun of Issac is finding new synergies and making a bad run into a good one, where I felt like Gungeon could make it to where you were just completely screwed and you had no control over the run. That said I bought it again on Switch despite not being overly fond of it as I think the big update will address a lot of my issues that's coming out early next year.

One thing I'd recommend, even at the cost of shortening your trip a day or two, is the VIP experience. You get your own Disney guide and they take you through the employee's only entrance in the back of the park and basically lets you do all the rides as a fast pass. Our guide was super awesome and was so knowledgeable about everything and all the history of the park, and had some juicy celebrity gossip too, haha. The biggest issue is the price, at $500/hr per 10 people and a minimum of 7 hours I think, not including the park tickets. It was something none of us will never forget though.

I don't think anyone should expect Epic to feature match Steam out of the gate. I don't think its asking a lot to have even the bare minimum of features, which Epic's launcher doesn't have. To your second point: how to have a competitive store? Many major store fronts do already- GOG.com/Discord Store/Humble- by offering unique services that Steam either doesn't match or came late in the game after those stores established their userbases. Epic decided to go the exclusive game route because, quite frankly, they can afford to. Don't take it from me, : I wonder what happened.

I will have more to say about all of this soon, but let me just say that 1) I don't blame any dev taking the initial offer to be on the store at launch, as it's such a huge opportunity that I probably would have taken it myself if I was in their position, and 2) I do think, now that we know everything about the store and the backlash right now, it is a much different story to still be championing it as a boon for indies everywhere, because we're outright ignoring the fans that got us here in the first place. It is a straight up worse deal for everyone involved for devs and Epic. But as I said, I'll be posting more soon.

Thread Satisfactory removed from Steam to be announced as Epic Store game
Look, I totally get the opportunity presented here. If I had to choose between launching on Steam and launching on Epic's debut day, with free exposure and better rates and everything else you mentioned, I'd have to strongly consider it. What I have an issue with is the idea that "everyone wins" in this scenario because it is very VERY clear that the ones that get the raw end of the deal are your fans and customers. It is "one more game launcher" but one without any of the features that Steam has built over years of work. Devs are asking consumers to give up achievements, leaderboards, workshop support, trading cards, social features, community features, friends list integration, big picture mode, regional pricing, and a slew of other features in exchange for the developer making more money. That is literally all it comes down to. So while I don't necessarily blame the devs for wanting to be there day one, I think it is a very bad thing to continue this exclusivity path, when the Epic client is so bare bones. I think it will backfire and devs will have to hope that the extra 12% and PR was worth it.

I never believed that EA rumor. If they were acquired, you have all the sports licenses (which are contractually multiplatform) and the slate of Star Wars games (again, contractually multiplatform) which leaves you with...battlefield and anthem being exclusive? It’s kinda not, when these launchers exist solely for the main company’s major tentpole game that is exclusively available only on that platform. When stores like Humble and GOG exist that offer DRM free services and different types of pro consumer rules and features: good for the consumer. When the Epic Launcher and Bethesda launcher pops up and the only way to buy Fallout/Fortnite is to use their launcher (which usually means losing out on support and services you’d get on other store fronts- like Bethesda refusing refunds on Fallout 76, etc.) then that’s less of a good thing for consumers. Especially if the storefront is not open to all devs, which seems to be the case for this announcement until further in 2019.

Also as a dev I’d rather you buy from Steam even with the 30% cut so you can potentially leave a review and boost visibility via their algorithm. Having to deal with 20 other storefronts that aren’t steam is going to be such a headache. Good on Epic for their announcement, now time to kick it into high gear and make their launcher and services at least as good as Steam.

If you really want to support developers, buy from itch.io. This is a nice announcement but doesn’t mean much of anything as the launcher itself is limited and there’s very little in terms of their feature set. They have a long way to go before making this announcement mean something substantial.

I can actually speak from experience here- by the time you're done with a game you're ready to try new things, to move on, and in some cases prove you can hop out of genres into others just as successfully. Other times its fear of expectations, of not being able to capitalize on the existing brand, but really I think its the desire to move on. Most indie devs go with their passions rather than what makes the most business sense. That's why for companies its very easy to greenlight all kinds of sequels, but some devs have a hard time staying in the same lane for years. I just made a sequel to my game and yeah, I am sooooooooooo ready to move onto a different type of game, even if commercial wise another sequel would be the surer bet financially.

I forced myself through crunch last year and it . And I'm as indie as it gets (contract workers with me doing 99% of the programming/design). I wish I could add my game to the list but I can't. If anything it goes to show that, even when there's literally no one forcing you to do crunch, you feel "obligated" as its almost like a part of the culture of the industry. I won't ever do that to myself again, I hope. (and also there are a lot of indie studios that go through the crunch phase, if anything it can feel worse because there are few employees to begin with and you have a much stronger sense of loyalty to get the company through the dev process as quick as possible).

Thread Despite saying that it wouldn't have any, GT Sports introduces microtransactions in its new update
Game development is...not an easy thing. I think my initial outrage at the beginning of the thread was just a culmination of the rollin' negativity surrounding GT Sport from people who don't play the game on Era. We get one thread a week asking what Polyphony should do now that GT Sport has failed. Not that there isn't some discussion that could be had there, but the number of people who either dismiss the updates the game has gotten post launch and the ~5 million in sales as disappointing is very strange. I've always been committed to transparency in my own work, and that has come back to bite me in a big way a year or two out. When I released my game people showed me prototype photos I posted or comments I made asking why I lied about features that were supposed to be in the game...and I, unrealistically, thought they were keeping up with the game enough to know why I would change features or remove them altogether. I kind of see that with what's going on here- Kaz said no microtransactions, now there's microtransactions. There's cause enough to be outraged. Peel it back and maybe it's not as bad as initially it seems- or maybe it's worse if you feel like they underdelivered with their final product. I don't think anyone is wrong in thinking this isn't a big deal, or is going to boycott GT forever. Getting flashbacks to the kind of comments that can come back to haunt you, even though, yes, plans changes and strategies shift, is not a fun thing to deal with, because people aren't wrong to feel slighted. *sigh* I should learn to sit these kinds of threads out, because I'm inherently biased- not because I'm a fan of GT/Sony, but because I know the pain and aggravation all too well of having to shift strategies to something you weren't initially going to do, and had no intention of doing, and the possibility of having mislead some people into supporting a vision you had a year ago that is a completely different vision today. It's no fun for anyone. I reached out to the OP to apologize, and I'm sorry y'all for trying to stifle an actual discussion.

Thread Why in-game achievements aren't widespread on the Switch?
Achievements/Trophies are fantastic. I cannot praise them enough. Those who compare them to "lazy game design" are completely misinformed. Here's a few reasons why I enjoy them from both a player and dev perspective: -They get players to do certain objectives they would normally skip. For instance, the easy tutorial trophy- many players skip tutorials altogether and can miss key details that they would have otherwise known via the tutorial. This is a nice way to nudge them into it without having to resort to locking game modes or content away at startup, something that negatively impacts the experience for those who are not playing for the first time. -They can show players fundamentals that the game would otherwise have a hard time relaying to the player. I was playing Gran Turismo Sport last night and I saw one of the trophies was to spend Mileage points on upgrading cars, something I didn't know existed until I saw the trophy despite dozens of hours in the game. Similarly I've seen trophies that describe combos or player moves where I've thought, whoa, I can do that? This is much more rewarding than having a little tutorial bubble appear. -It gives the game a little bit more weight in terms of progression. Getting a bronze for something that takes an hour, vs a gold trophy that you get at the end of the game, makes it all feel more final and adds to the accomplishment of beating the game. -Trophy/Steam Achievement rarity can be a great easy way to get some stats from your player base as a dev. I've seen low rarity on some achievements that I thought were easy to get, and this told me that the game wasn't surfacing the mode or playstyle appropriately or in a way that players were paying attention to. -They add fun challenges that would otherwise not fit within the structure of the game. Using my game as an example, I wanted to do a special achievement that unlocks if a player plays a level in an exact style. This would be awkward to put into the game since it wasn't built for extremely specific scenarios like this, but as an achievement it was very easy and fun to do. -They show up on friend's profiles and are another simple way to surface your game to players who don't know anything about it. There is certainly such a thing as bad trophy/achievement design. I think a lot of the older Uncharted games, where you had to kill people with a specific gun so many times, leads to endless grinding that is not fun at all. Similarly, trophies based on difficulty can be tricky and leads the player into sticking with a difficulty level that may be unfun for their skill level and might discourage them from continuing to play (I was thankful to see God of War skip the difficulty mode trophies). I'd say any trophy that requires grinding can be a slog, and I'm guilty of that as well. Anyways, just my two cents. I hope Nintendo adds them because there is absolutely ZERO reason, NONE whatsoever, that they shouldn't be in there. They are great for everyone, and you can turn them off if you disagree.

Thread Creepy stalker liveblogs about two other people on a plane, ends up getting one of them doxxed
There was a lady who was talking to a guy that was clearly uninterested in anything she had to say, and it was pretty painful to watch. Then when we all got up to exit she says, "hey so let me have your phone number and I can send you those pictures!" "um, no. No." "Ok well are you on Facebook I can friend you on there?" "Uh no, nope. No." "Oh come onnn!" (gah) *mumbles something as he looks straight ahead to the exit* It was the cringiest thing I had ever witnessed.

I mean, the PC version launches in nine days. It's hard to believe it would take a year to release on Xbox, especially since it already has a lot of parity with the PC version sans the new map and probably a few other features I'd assume.

True, but none of them had the level of marketing weight that MS is putting on PUBG. I think players are going to go in expecting more considering it even has a retail presence.

I forget Fortnite has any other modes aside from BR, hah. There is another map coming early next year, and there will likely only be one game type forever, with some different variations like FPS only. The map is HUGE. You won't see all of it even after 15-30 hours.

I think the main problem is that there are other Game Preview games way more polished than this (Fortnite). I mean wayyyyyy more polished. I wonder how mainstream gamers will take to the level of roughness that PUBG has in the preview program. I think it's asking a lot for console players to get accustomed to this level of, well, jank before they bail out.

...you can still play Warhawk. Even today. Starhawk was such a disappointment. Ugh.

It was, in fact I was going to quit making games altogether until he emailed me. I did a write up when the news hit that sums up just how much of an impact he made in my life:

Thread New Intellivision Console Details (No Ports or DLC, Strictest Quality Control Ever: All Games 7/10+)
I give him credit for not taking any money until its on shelves at least. You know, I played an intellivision looking game called DOBOTONE over at GDC this year, and it had its own console with twisty knobs that would directly affect the game in real time. It was a total blast and was pretty damn amazing. That gives me a glimmer of hope as to what this could become. Here's some gameplay:

Thread Should Sony try their hand on a more arcadeish Gran Turismo, Horizon style?
I mean I'm having a blast with Sport but its no GT7 for sure. I don't really think there's a tremendous rush to secure the racing market, and Forza still has a long way to go to build up the franchise to a power seller. But they'll get there eventually.

Thread Should Sony try their hand on a more arcadeish Gran Turismo, Horizon style?
What does that make Forza Horizon 3, which sold less than half of what Gran Turismo 6 did and a little more than half of Sport? Turn 10 announced this week that they aren't making Forza 8, and instead are working to improve Forza 7 which had lots of launch issues. The bi-annual release schedule finally caught up with them and I never felt like releasing so many games so quickly was ever a good thing.
