retailers effectively saying they either want everything shut down until business is normal again or they want not-diamond solutions that are effectively just the same business as normal again is going to kill off a lot of stores. a lot more than if some sort of digital+physical solution can't be compromised on.

I think we're talking about this subject from two different angles. I don't believe X-Men is for everyone, nor do I think Hickman is for everyone. Hell, comics aren't for everyone. I do think that Hickman's X-Men is the best starting point, the most newbie-friendly X-Men series in 20 years. That's with the understanding that maybe there is no 100% newbie-friendly starting point except X-Men #1. But if an acquaintance/someone online asked me how to start following X-Men I'd say try HoX/PoX (and have). And yeah, there's a lot of anecdotal examples of people where it was exactly what they wanted. If a newbie wanted to know if X-Men was something they'd even have a little interest in, I'd still point them to Whedon's Astonishing. But if, right now, a newbie said they wanted to potentially start following X-Men comics, then yeah starting with HoX/PoX is significantly more likely to result in them sticking with reading X-Men stuff than otherwise and now is the absolute best time to recommend that.

yeah, I guess I just disagree. if anything, I think new readers come off of hox/pox with a clearer introduction to the modern x-men than old readers who bring their x-baggage with them. they're more interested in the mysteries hickman's setting up. they care more about the new relationships as they're written.x-baggage example. i don't think you need any understanding of what came before to appreciate what's happening now. in fact, characterizing what's happening now by what's happened before is actively confusing or frustrating people who won't let that stuff go. to the new reader, vulcan, sinister, the vault kids, the grannies, they're all equal mysteries.

hmm. i think hickman's x-men is very newbie-friendly. probably the best pick-up point since new x-men (noting that astonishing is more of a one-off than a starting point). i just think it can be heavy reading and may not be for everyone. starting points aren't about completely blanking the page. they're about saying, "read from here to understand the story" and I think hox/pox forward does that extremely well. true "restart" points are rare. you basically have to blank the page. running restarts are best when they do two things. when they pause to breathe and let fans reset their feet, firstly. but second, when the new status quo they create makes it so you don't care about what came before. new readers from hox/pox are able to invest themselves in what he's doing and just enjoy it. yeah, some of it's probably weird or confusing, but that's hickman's style in the first place. it works out pretty well. but yeah, it's not going to be for everyone. but I really don't attribute that to how good or bad of a starting point it is.

we're having a pages long conversation about something that legit isn't going to matter whatsoever in comparison the the emergency we're having. it matters very little what comics stores get when things open up, at what rate they're sent out, how marvel and DC roll them out, w/e. comic shops will order what they think is right, people will buy them or won't and they'll all complain about it online. it'll be business as usual for shops still solvent. it'll all be surprisingly dull compared to the fact that a large amount of stores can't afford to keep paying rent without having comics to sell. it doesn't matter slighty in comparison to how bad it would be to the overall industry (direct market included!) if comics just stopped for four months. we're talking a huge loss overall in sales after comics come back, stock prices dropping to the point where dc and marvel are laying off creatives left and right, huge turnover in the offices, long-running series going kaput. it'll be a blessing if everyone's LCS survives to see the day it can complain about having to deal with how it's going to sell batman #93 and #98 at the same time.

yeah, i don't follow this logic at all. if after four months anyone feels comfortable buying a floppie period, it doesn't matter whether they can buy one or two or five. people will still buy a comic or more. they'll figure it out just like they've always figured out which comics they'll prioritize. otherwise the comic industry would already be dead, because everyone would think "i want a bunch of comics but there are too many so i wont buy any"

it's tough to predict given the situation. obviously DC and marvel are looking for alternative distribution options right now. if they do it fast enough it'll just be a quickened rollout covering a couple weeks. if that doesn't work out, i'd imagine they'd do a different type of quickened rollout with physical catching up to digital over time or a consequent rollout so like... 93 would go out at the same time as 98, then 94 and 99, until all the backlog is printed. but again, all speculation. but all these situations are so much more, you know, actually possible, than marvel and dc dropping 4 months of comic backlog on shops in a week or few.

I disagree that the first arc of Bleach was generic in the same way that I don't think the first arc of Naruto was generic either. Both stories escaped the formula to tell endearing and emotional origin stories about their protagonists, established their relationships with their peers with surprising empathy, and at the same time did incredible world-building that would define their series for arc after arc later. Did they still heavily depend on shonen tropes? Absolutely. But it was how they explored those tropes that made them so much more than generic -- at least for an arc. I'd say it's a lesson most shonen could learn a lot from by reading One Piece. One Piece is the king of never escaping the shonen cycle with every arc, but still managing to create incredibly compelling character showcases and worldbuilding page after page. Incredibly rare. It's why One Piece is my favorite of the big shonens.

i think soul society, if im remembering the arc names right, works well coming off of the first one. where the first arc builds the relationship between ichigo and rukia, as well as with ichigo's friends, arc two is like the protagonist going into hell to save someone they love. things just keep getting worse and worse, but the protagonist persists (with shonen flair). it does get generic as it breaks down into fight after progressionless fight and "hnng would you like to see my bankai." and it ultimately ends super badly in terms of character arcs and emotional momentum (the aizen twist was still cool!). the wasted relationship between rukia and ichigo is just one part of it (even if they were just to remain friends, they should have gone forward as co-protagonists!). it just never rebuilds that emotional connection, buries itself in the same shit that destroys all of the worst shonen jumps.

Also, flu shot?another vote for messi's shonen jump supremacy ehDefinitely isn't big enough to support the effort, absolutely. I see fulltime digital during the pandemic more as Marvel+DC investing in keeping their talent employed and keeping some momentum and excitement going in the industry that'll encourage readers to go back to their LCS when it reopens. Digital getting a bit of push would be good, but yeah, not worth considering over other things. That's an interesting and sad point about talent maybe having nowhere to go. i'll say the same thing I said to messi. this is a made up problem. if marvel/dc do go digital for the several months of quarantine we're looking at, physical comics aren't going to just keep getting made. orders aren't going to just be kept rolling out with diamond and printers shut down, then instantly when the direct market opens suddenly there's 4+ comics dropped for each series. if all-digital does happen, the direct market return would have to be rolled out slow. there's no other way to mechanically do it. and the bigger point, even if floppies did "stack up," it would still be better for comic shops than killing the industry for 4+ months. the industry would lose so many readers, so much talent. if it survived, it'd take years to recuperate. digital only for several months would at least be life support.

you don't know why you would? why the comic industry wouldn't act to protect the direct market in the worst disaster since the crash? it wouldn't even be hard. you just cancel all orders, which has probably already been done, right? and then you allow reorders for the missed books spread out over months while you're still putting out new books. it'd even be a certain success given the speculator nature of the direct market. people would want those gap-months, especially if you make it a big relaunch event or w/e. and that's jsut one really basic way for the industry to handle it. logically, that's the healthiest way to do things, keep paying people, and then help the direct market come back together after the coronavirus. i don't think these companies have their shit together tho. i don't think marvel or DC care about their own creative talent enough to keep paying them while only bringing in digital-level sales. i just see this as an exercise in speculation -- what these companies should be doing for the health of the industry.

I finished Rat Queens! It's a charming fantasy series for adults about a bunch of badass women whose questing party gets caught up in shenanigans. They also get shitfaced all the time. The selling point of Rat Queens is and always will be the core party members, which the books spend so much time developing -- often at the overall story's expense. They're a bit tropey, but they deeply care about each other and that tends to assuage any issues arising from them often being flawed and occasionally awful. It helps that the dialogue is very funny. It's hard not to fall in love with them, too. Some folk may not know, but the original artist for Rat Queens was arrested for domestic violence around issues 7 or 8 and was removed from the book. The result is that the Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 deluxe books feel incredibly different. It sucks to say so, but book one is far better. The story is much more cogent, the character development much more purposeful. The story in book two is all over the place, but there are still strong moments. The final issues of the book particularly seemed to come together both in tone and character development, so I'd say Rat Queens has a promising future (tbf, I haven't read any of the 2019-2020 new issues). What I want more of is direction and world-building. Through two books there are a dozen great characters to tell a story with and no meaningful setting or goals behind them. The city of Palisade isn't enough, especially when none of the Queens really care that much about it. Now that all of the queens' backstories have been well-combed over, hopefully what comes next builds on that foundation. I said I was going to read Wicked+Divine next, but I'm still waiting on a book to arrive from IST. So back to the backlog RNG for now! It'll be DC One Million! hype.

i don't know how anyone could see comics' erasure and "between the panels" writing of lgbt characters and relationships as anything other than straight up bigotry. hickman's intention be damned. doesn't matter whether he's being editorially censored or not, whether he thinks it's a fun game. perpetuating that shit is embracing the harm it causes. we all spend money on these books. we support it, too. we all deal with layers of bigotry in real life, this is just another one worth acknowledging. it's really the least we can do. i also disagree with calling the conversation many of us are having about marvel+wolverine+cyclops shipping. things that aren't stated directly still exist. we might as well be arguing about how wolverine gets his adamantium back when he dies. it's still a thing. we're just disagreeing about the details.

we've seen more shared moments between cyclops and wolverine than between either of them and jean, for sure. it's not much, but if you're willing to discount it you should also be discounting any evidence of their relationship period. i think it's bad to assume heterosexuality and discount bisexuality out of expectation.

i agree with everyone. as freeza says, just because it's an indirect reference doesn't mean it's not true. scott, wolverine, and marvel girl are in a relationship. the extent of that relationship isn't clear, but there's enough indirect evidence to make it obvious. but ahsoka is also right. marvel does not deserve any credit whatsoever. meaningful representation isn't indirect. keeping it indirect is worse than having none at all, frankly, because it makes the message "LGBT representation isn't worth us putting it on the page, rather that the space between panels." it's embracing bigoted views about keeping lgbt humanity out of public view. we know they're LGBT. that's what makes it suck. we know they're in a bisexual polyamorous relationship, but they won't show us. it'd be better if it wasn't there at all, where at least marvel could maintain plausible deniability. fucking sucks, man. it could be such a cool thing and instead it just sucks.

Anyone read the first God of War comic, released in 2018? Looks like they're doing another one that will go all the way back to the ending of God of War 3. ""God of War: Fallen God follows Kratos after conquering Zeus and thwarting Athena. Believing himself to be finally free of his bondage, he sets sail for the desert in an attempt to distance himself from his home and his shame only to find his rage and guilt follow close behind. Kratos rages against the one foe that has proven to be unconquerable—himself. But a war against oneself is unwinnable, and only invites madness."

SSDs, in general, are going to be a big leap. What Sony's SSD advantage might mean compared to both the PC and Xbox Series X hasn't even been described well, let alone shown. I don't doubt that developers focused on PS4 development will absolutely find that advantage useful, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it will result in huge, tangible, and specific examples where average game players will be able to say, "Wow, that's why Sony didn't settle for a standard SSD setup."

I'm a big fan of King's Batman and the main reason I don't think it's brought up is pretty simple. It's not done. We can all look at Aaron's Thor run and rather conclusively say either you liked the post-Jane Thor stuff leading to the end or you didn't. It's not developing any further. It's what it is. King's Batman, whether you liked what it was up until now, still has its biggest story left to tell. Of course, if you hated everything so far you're not going to read what's left. But for anyone still open to what King's doing we can understand Bat+Cat has the potential to be great, has the potential to define King's Batman legacy. It's worth waiting to find out what happens before making any kind of definitive statement regarding King's efforts as a whole. As opposed to Aaron's Thor.

yar. i agree. i just don't know if the picross mashup works well. it really messes with the pacing. in context, like with layton, you can imagine someone stopping him on the street and asking him a 30s puzzle. not so much a detective spending 15 minutes doing a picross in the middle of a murder scene. thematically it's weird, too. since the picross puzzles aren't connected to the story or world in any real way. like layton's puzzles are.

I finished the Black Bolt OHC! It was solid. I only have a few thoughts on the writing. The story was much thinner than I expected from an Eisner Winner. It read a whole lot like a transition book. Like someone had left the series and a writer was brought in to get Black Bolt from a to b, to reset various relationship, and add some flourish in-between. To that degree it was successful. It made all of the changes work. It just didn't do the flourishes the justice they deserved. Relationships weren't properly developed and the story ended up overwhelmed by the action. Luckily, the art was gorgeous. Incredible color work, in particular. Best that Black Bolt's attacks have ever looked. And man, she was only in the run a couple times, but Medusa and her hair looked so fucking good. The only issue I had with the art was Ward kept making Black Bolt's face look like Quitely's Cassandra Nova. I picked this up because I hadn't read it and knew it had an Eisner Award, but honestly now I don't think I'd get it again. Maybe the Inhumans will come back and I'll have a reason to collect them. edit: backlog RNG has picked Rat Queens DLX Vol. 1 & 2. I've read Vol. 1 before! Should be fun.

I finished The Graveyard Book graphic novel and I cried at the end It was a beautifully told fairy tale. The adaptation let Gaiman's prose work its magic and accented it with grace. The story worked best when Bod was young, when the world was a mystery and Bod was brave. As Bod grew older, the story grew harsher, which was by design but also was understandably harder to accept -- likely also by design. Bod going to school and getting bullied, then dealing with the consequences was the start of it. The innocence of him turning as he spent more and more time outside of the graveyard. His chapter with the Jacks and Scarlett was like ripping off a bandaid. Bod asking Silas why Scarlett was afraid of him was... oof. Both as Bod struggled to understand what living meant and how that was reflected in Silas, who had never lived but also saw how living brought with it pain and sacrifice. And love and so much good, too. I really thought something would happen to Silas at the end. A price for falling in love with his surrogate son, or something. Him just saying goodbye with a handshake was harsh. But served as a stark reminder of what Bod had before him. A life. Where Silas never would. And of course the book was filled with references to storytelling, both specific and general. The Honor Guard being a group of reformed horror book and movie monsters. The bullies that Bod called Jekyll and Hyde. Bod wanting to read Robinson Crusoe. Like in The Sandman, they offer clues and rich background ideas, but never expect the reader to be informed. There's a lot of horror hidden at the edges of The Graveyard Book, which stands in contrast to the fearless Bod. His parents were murdered, he grows up amongst ghosts and corpses and spirits. He's hunted by a mysteriously powerful organization. His Guardian is a vampire. Early in the story this is presented as a good thing, seen through Bod's innocent eyes. When I started seeing it as disturbing is when Bod gets his hand stabbed by a pencil and doesn't even react. Pain and the possibility of harm or even death mean nothing to him. At first I assumed he was going to grow out of this, to learn to love to live. Here's where I lost Gaiman's goal. I don't know what his intention was, but my reading is that Bod never did learn to love to live. He had ideas, though, which is as good a start as a parent can give their child. Still, Bod seeing him leaving the graveyard as an adventure was a bit unsettling. His need to find a deserted island doubly so. Why? I think back to that moment where Bod mentions while reading Robinson Crusoe that the protagonist sees a footprint, that there's someone else on the island! Is Bod looking to find a deserted island in the hopes someone else might be there with him? It's and odd goal and it leaves me worried fo Bod. That he's not ready. That his family has left him woefully unprepared and overconfident. I guess that's life though. And death, I suppose. edit: backlog rng has picked Black Bold by Ahmed.

this is definitely a thing that happens with video games and my readers. or even my friends i chat with video games about. especially video games, compared to comic books. partially because video games require such a bigger cost and time investment. when i'm playing 50+ games a year and approach criticism where i'm generally seeing half of them as above average and half of them as below average, it just doesn't mesh with folk who buy 5 or even 10 games a year and know they'll like or love every one of them. except for the one that's more enjoyable to loathe in online forums.

Second DLX for Criminal down. Did I mention Criminal is brilliant? Let me reiterate how brilliant it is. I talked yesterday about how the art of Criminal is in its characters, but for the second DLX I want to talk about its more visceral qualities. Criminal can just be incredibly violent and sexy at times. It can go hot and cold from page to page. All three of the main characters in DLX vol. 2 are driven to violence through sexual desire. Jacob and the redhead, Tracy and the boss' wife, Riley and the girl next door. And the book does a great job of distinguishing what's appropriate to portray as sexy vs. genuinely awful. Sexy, consensual encounters get page space while anything else is mentioned in reference or illuded to through more subtle panels. It's pulpy and dirty and fun. And like the rest of the story, it all makes you question whether it's appropriate to think it's right or wrong. It makes you question whose feelings are real or not, or whether that even matters. Layers of gray blah blah. All I know is I love every turn of the page. I gotta add that I think it's funny that Tracy, maybe the first guy where the story paints him to be a good dude doing everything he can to make the lives better of people he knows are deserving, ultimately gets tossed out of the story because war is a simpler and more appropriate place for his values and worldviews. Meanwhile Richy, who is a genuine piece of human garbage, is the one that finds comfort and normalcy in the whole nightmare because they lied and murdered their way through everything that stood in their way. It's criminal, I tell ya. Criminal. edit: backlog RNG picked Gaiman's The Graveyard Book graphic novel adaptation.

the snakes are coming out of the woodwork! it's now canon that didio tried to get snyder to add svengoolie to the justice league during his arc. then didio put his foot down and said either svengoolie is in dark nights metal 2 or it gets canceled. that's why everyone in dark nights metal looks like shit. the svengoolie influence. snyder got the last laugh and got didio fired tho and capullo was only able to make them all look a bit less like svengoolie.

didio's just a huge svengoolie fan to start, apparently. but the jokes started around when they announced didio was personally writing a svengoolie comic series for dc comics last year. like, used his power as publisher to make it happen. fucking svengoolie. i forget what it was but i made a lame, too-serious comment about didio abusing his power to make a svengoolie comic while another comic (i forget which) was getting canceled for low sales. i still stand by that sentiment. the jokes started pretty soon after.

I just finished the first Criminal Deluxe Edition from Icon and, as y'all know. I absolutely love this series. It's surprising to me and I hope it's surprising to folk who have read my tastes. Criminal isn't about anything. It doesn't have a message, though it is deeply ingrained in the ideas of good and wrong and redemption and so on. I burn for messages, but Criminal actively avoids having a message. In fact, this first Deluxe even actively avoids having even conclusions. So much is left unsaid or unfinished both between the pages and at the end of each story. But that's also why I love it. Criminal is all about characters. It's not enough to say these are broken people. These are broken people who have been placed into situations from which there's no returning. They change due to their situations. They've broken and are bending to accommodate their brokenness. And as the stories in the first Deluxe Edition show, there's no happy endings in store for these people. They looks for outs and opportunities, perceive the kinds of people they could be, the values they wished they espoused, but they aren't capable of attaining those things. They're ideas meant for people who aren't broken. For these characters, those ideas are a mirage. But really they all know that and they all know the truth in their hearts -- that they're just billiard balls rolling out the paths from which they're inevitably moving towards. While it sounds like what could be the most depressing shit ever, that's where Brubaker's talent comes in. He takes what could just be viewed as a death march and turns it into something so intimate. He conveys the deepest thoughts, hopes, hatreds of these people's lives in a way that's honest, introspective, and so excellent at building empathy. That these individuals' fates are doomed matters so much less than being there with them. Sean Phillips art does a great job of creating a realistic perspective for these stories while still maintaining a layer of the surreal so that it doesn't become disturbing. The result is incredible, though I'll admit that his more recent stuff is much more impressive than this earlier Criminal work. What else can I say? Criminal isn't just a comic about heists. It's about people. Not necessarily so much different than anyone else. Surprisingly similar to each other in ways they'll never admit.

I'm glad it's not Lemire alone tackling this story. It's not that I don't think Lemire is a great writer, but Barbalien specifically is written a bit, hrm, well let's just say I'm glad he's bringing in someone LGBT (I believe!) to write it. Lemire worked well in The Farm setting where he was comfortable. Outside of that Barbie really deserves a broader perspective.

All done with Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 1. the final third of the book was definitely the least interesting of it. Very thin on interesting changes or additions, plus a clear trend toward moral lessons over pulpy action and mystery. Very formulaic, which is to be expected and probably only gets worse through the rest of the golden age. Scarecrow was added toward the end of this book, which was fun. He was a book-loving teacher who was teased for his shabby clothes. He decided to threaten and kill people for more money for more books, scaring them with his Scarecrow guise. Meanwhile, a fear toxin did crop up but not related to Scarecrow. Joker also dropped a riddle. Seeds for ideas that will crop up in the future. Batman didn't get any new tools in this final bit of the book, but he did trade in his normal car Batmobile (which swapped between red and blue issue to issue) for a silly-looking new Batmobile with the traditional batwing-like flares on the back and a big Batman face on the front. Just like the Batplane (that could turn into a boat!). Batman even mostly stopped using the choking gas pellets from his toolbelt. The book heavily suffers from the most recurring villain being just generic mobsters. There's no depth to these characters or their motivations. They rob banks, do protection rackets, and constantly plot to steal jewels and stock and shit from the rich. And apparently breed like rabbits. The only thing worse than them is the racist caricatures, mostly of Asians. I don't think there's been a speaking role for a black character yet. Incredibly sad stuff to reflect on. One thing I am surprised by is the continued deaths. Mobsters and rich victims die in quantity book to book. Batman himself is rarely directly involved in the deaths any more (tho he does still punch dudes off buildings/trains/etc. from time to time). I keep waiting for this stuff to stop, but maybe it stays through the Golden Age? Really interesting overall, given I know very little about this era from comics. I'll admit I've found I have less emotional sentimentality for it than I expected, though. I mentioned in a different post about the book how much I genuinely care about and enjoy early Spider-Man. Not so much Batman, I guess. edit: backlog RNG has picked the Brubaker Criminal Deluxe Editions! oh shit yes.

I'll probably be about 2/3 of the way through the Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 1 by the end of the night. It's absolutely getting annoyingly repetitive. I've gotten into a rhythm of glazing over fight-scene dialogue and narrative bubbles that just reexplain the panel. It moves a whole lot faster that way and I haven't missed anything significant yet. Two things I'm really surprised by are how many unique villains there are and how many times the Joker has cropped up. There are all manner of weird ganster type villains, most of them dying in lame ways at the end of their issues in some horrible way. One guy even snatched a gun and killed himself rather than let Batman take hiim to jail. Batman said it was better this way... Joker's stories are often the best ones. He has such odd ideas, is needlessly awful due to his own greed, and tends to give as good as he gets. Catwoman's still the only other villain (Hugo Strange twice in one Batman issue, Clayface named but not yet back) to make multiple appearances -- she even kissed Batman to stun him and escape this last issue. Batman kept talking about "romance" after, even though he's still engaged. Hmm. There's been absolutely no development in any regard since those first couple issues, since Batman #1 really. It's still just Batman + Robin fighting w/e villains they stumble upon. Batman still has the same tools available -- his belt of gas pellets, rope, a blue (was red in the first issues) expensive car, and his bat-plane/copter. Each new issue is like a 10+ page opportunity to introduce something new and I'm almost always disappointed. I'm definitely already dreaming of getting to another book, but I'm going to stick it out for sure. I also think I'll set a rule that I don't read any more of my Golden Age books until reading at least 5-10 other books in-between.

No problem at all! So the perks of an omnibus are threefold. 1.) They're often comprehensive. They'll collect the bulk of an event, a series, or an author's work very often in reading order. Only trade paperbacks are really comparable in this regard, but you end up having to collect a lot of trades and they're not always in reading order when there are crossovers, events, or tie-ins. 2.) Omnibi have oversized art. You get about 1/4 more space overall for art. This isn't important for all books, but for stuff with great art or stories you love it's invaluable. OHC (over-sized hardcovers) are comparable in size, but are much less comprehensive. They cover maybe 6-18 issues where omnibi can collect 30-50. OHCs are good for short stories, though, like Watchmen, Batman: The Dark Knight, or Marvels. 3.) They're built to last and collectible. Being hardcovers, they're much less prone to spurious damage like a trade paperback can be. They're also almost always in demand, so even after buying one (at IST prices mind, which are 40-50% off in the USA), you can sell it at the very least for a very good price. In the best case, the book goes Out of Print and you can sell them for 2-5x what you paid for. There's nothing really comparable in this regard. TPBs and standard-sized hardcovers don't hold their value well. Even OHCs can be hard to resell, as they aren't as in-demand and often get made into omnibi anyway. They also look really good on a shelf.

So I'm through the early Detective Comics issues and have read the first actual Batman issue. I've got to say the Bill Finger issues are notably better than the early Gardner Fox stuff. Finger tends to build up some tension in the story with much more grounded villains and better characterization. The influence of pulpy detective comics and the Shadow are super obvious in Finger's stuff. Gardner prefers much more formulaic structure, little character work, and a lot more racism. Both writers love to kill a gangster, though. I'm really surprised how many people die in these early books. And most of them die explicitly because Batman decides to let them or hits/pushes them into a state where they'll "accidentally" die. They're all gangsters or villains of some sort, of course. I think there's only been one panel where Batman had a gun. He uses a handful of gun-shaped tools tho. The stories so far aren't awful. They're simple, though. Very simple. There's only some light depth in the form of returning characters like Jim Gordon. Both the Joker and Dr. Strange have both been introduced, too. I'm also curious about Bruce's fiance Julia. What I care most about is how the things I'm familiar with are introduced bit by bit; how so much of the characterization and the art references I know from the modern area stem from this era. While I'm enjoying it so far, I won't lie. These aren't stories I'd read if they weren't Batman. I genuinely enjoy the Stan Lee early Spider-Man of the 60s. But this early 40s stuff... it's got a couple decades of work to do.

Batman by Loeb and Sale Omnibus finished! What can I say, it's a great book. Not Batman as a character's best book, but a great Batman book. It pulls together so many elements of the post-Year One Batman concept, bringing together the gangster and detective half of Gotham and its "freak" half as well. The killers in both The Long Halloween and Dark Victory never mattered. Rather, their murders served to show the continued descent of Gotham from violent but understandable crime to the madness of Batman-era Gotham. If Year One is the ideal Batman living up to his aspirations, Loeb's run is the canon example of how everything went wrong. This is more of meta reading regarding what Loeb's Batman has become over the years, of course. Loeb's said before his idea was to tell a cool crime story that provided opportunities to showcase the various big bads of Batamn -- while also establishing certain post-Year One ideas like Batman coming to terms with needing to trust people, Dent becoming Two Face, Catwoman + Batman's complicated relationship. It's just become so much more since then, since all the post-Year One worldbuilding is so taken for granted anymore. Salte's look for all of the villains are undeniably iconic, from Joker's ever-growing toothy smile to Poison Ivy's every growing cloud of vines surrounding her. What stands out to me is how well Sale uses shadow in his art. He doesn't flood a page with black like Mignola does, but definitely exaggerates shadow so there are rarely gradients of color. This makes each character stand out, often just based on their color. Pink -- Catwoman. Green -- Ivy. Purple -- Joker. And Batman, oven blending with the darkness, fringed with greys and dark blues. Outstanding book. Legendary Batman story. A classic for all the right reasons. Backlog RNG has picked Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 1 here we go

It'll go on with the name Dawn of X: Nation Building and will be much more asymmetrically collected than the first 6 TPBs. Just so folk know the whole story, someone on the site claimed that they'd breached ResetEra's data and had emails/passwords, etc. They claimed to have messaged the admins from multiple accounts as "proof." ResetEra responded, saying that they looked into it and found no evidence of a breach, but did find evidence that the user in question is a known alt-right member with a history of harassing ResetEra members. They attributed the multiple accounts to the user having access to public information stolen from breaches on other websites. The same user has now posted from several other accounts, posting dox'd (and potentially false) information context-free collected by places like Kiwifarms to try and harass B-Dubs, the site General Manager. If folk don't have 2-factor security set up, it might be a good time to do so. Here are my thoughts on today's thing. This is a bad, bad place for DC to be in, especially with Jim Lee taking over. We're getting to see whether DC chooses to support women and the LGBT+ community or the alt-right community, unfolding day to day. Far Sector writer Jemisin, for those who aren't familiar, has zero fucking tolerance for alt-right shitheadery. If she knows about what's going on, which given her very online nature is all but certain, I can't imagine her wanting to stick things out at DC. I'd say if she departs then that means DC is siding with SGM on the matter. I'd expect Jemisin to be the canary in this regard.

I'm most of the way through Dark Victory in the Loeb Batman Omnibus and man, I love this stuff so much. Probably some of if not the best Catwoman and Two Face storytelling ever. Incredible work with the Gotham gangsters. Incredible work with Jim Gordon. Honestly, the only weak part for me is Batman himself, who is rarely portrayed as smart or compassionate. Two things I think are super important for the character. He just tends to realize where he needs to be and the punch whoever's there. It's a great, tense overall story, from those first Halloween issues through the whole run.

Blarg. Excalibur has definitely become the bottom of the barrel x-book for me. A fight with a handful of warwolves that's nearly completely irrelevant to the ongoing story has taken up more so much more space than the confrontation with Morgan le Fay. It's practically two full issues now. Meanwhile, it's by far the worst character writing across the whole line. I'd even go as far as saying Fallen Angels at least had distinctive characters compared to Excalibur. Everyone outside of Apocalypse is bland to a fault. I had genuine issues telling which bubble went to which character this latest issue, and even then it didn't matter because none of the dialogue was interesting or valuable. I told myself to drop Excalibur after #6. Here I am at #8 saying I should have listened to myself.

I finished Batman: Black and White (while I was banned)! My full experience with the book was very good. However, I'll admit that after my initial posts about it, which were extremely positive, the book's overall quality fell off quite a bit. It's not so surprising. The editors probably did everything they could to get as much talented as fast as possible, but then as the book went on, the book couldn't keep up that pace. I should clarify that this mostly refers to the writing. Artistically, the book was incredible from start to finish. Batman: Black and White is a perfect test case for a writer. You get 7-9 pages to tell whatever Batman story you want. Some authors choose a story that represents them, some choose stories that best represent their ideal characterization of Batman, others smother the story in nostalgia for Batman's golden years, surprisingly many choose to do a basic ass story about Batman inhaling fear gas and seeing monsters but ultimately defeating Scarecrow through sheer willpower. Time after time though, it's the same talent we all know are outstanding regardless of what they're doing I'm talking about Simonson, Gaiman, Sienkiewicz, Bolland, Dini, Ellis, etc. The legends. But then there are also folk who just seem to get Batman. Folk like Archie Goodwin, Dustin Nguyen, Mike Barr, and Bruce Timm. Just awesome pulpy stories that don't even need Batman to tell a definitive Batman story. It's just so crazy cool to have all these wildly different storytellers come together and, despite wildly different takes on Batman himself, still somehow stay within this established idea of what Batman, Gotham, etc. are about. And that's why Batman: Black and White is so great. The variety may as well be an argument between these writers and artists -- no one seeing the same guy in a Batsuit. All these contrasting ideas and it's just pure Batman immersion. Great stuff.

I finished East of West Year One and Year Two! Oh boy. I've got some criticisms. So, I've got unclear feelings about East of West. But let's start strong. I like Death. I like the story of Death hunting down the Chosen for revenge. I like him searching for his wife and son. I like the other horsemen and the Chosen trying to ensure the end of the world while also not getting killed by Death. This story, however, is so overshadowed by everything else and the "everything else" just doesn't deserve the attention. My criticisms start with the world that Hickman's built. From a skin-deep perspective, it's great. The alternate reality nations are all interesting visually. The confederacy, the union, new orleans, texas, PRA, and the endless nation. All have intriguing connections to American history -- mostly its worst bits. All of them building toward the apocalypse in small and large ways. But the thing is, despite these obvious connections, Hickman doesn't really address them in any meaningful or complex manner. You've got the fucking confederacy, for fuck's sake. You've got chairman mao's fucking nation. A resurgent native american nation. And yet the politics of East of West aren't just shallow, they're actively escapist from the past. There's no meaningful commentary here. The Union is CORRUPT. The Texans are LAWLESS. The Endless Nation sees the immigrant nations as IMPURE. They're all just props and it's worse because of it. Nevertheless, we spend most of our time dallying with these nations and their leaders. Hickman makes these interactions interesting page to page, naturally, but there's just so little storytelling between the words and gunshots. 29 issues in and the status quo has changed in no way. Texas has been laid waste to, but does that actaully mean anything in the story? Nope. The Texan chosen is still about. He's still got his ranger dude doing shit. Does it matter that the arrogant confederate has become president? Nope. Or that the union president has been shown to be a real piece of shit? NOPE. It's a lot of wheel-spinning. It's a lot of repeating character dynamics that are already well-established. It's about time to get to the point, Hickman. Again, page to page East of West is a very entertaining read. The moments Hickman chooses to capture do draw you in. They are still very fun. It's a lot of wild west/transfuturism questioning as the world lights itself on fire. And Dragotta kills it every single page. But it's when you set the book down and ask what's happened, if the book is fulfilling the reason you're reading it in the first place, that it loses its glow. The fuck is Death even doing most of the time?

there's radical feminism and radical feminism. traditionally, radical feminism referred to the evolving idea of feminism beyond suffrage and so on. the effort against gender norms and cultural patriarchy beyond (and in addition to further) legal equality. the radical feminism in TERF is in many ways a misnomer, as many would say bigoted views towards trans women is anti-feminist. nevertheless, it's accurate in the sense that it's a post-suffrage cultural effort to change views. in practice, however, it's rather to protect a bigoted and traditional view of women and gender roles. without intending to put words into northcott's mouth, the attitude she displayed is common among terfs. the attitude being that feminist efforts like encouraging diversity in media (including trans representation) is itself bigoted towards men, "right" or "moral" women/feminists, and the patriarchal society itself as well. the views represent a feminist that, while supporting first-wave feminist efforts, argue against second-wave feminism. that's why radical feminism is used. lots of history there.

Surprising coincidence after I asked earlier what the odds were Obama endorses whoever is leading in delegates/popular vote before the convention. Here's a recent quote from an Obama "confidant": "He feels that he's singularly positioned to help unify the party at the end of this," the Obama confidant said. "And if he were try to put his thumb on the scale now, it would take away his ability to do so when it's most needed -- the general election."

ooo shit, you're right. i just assumed it dem ballots sent in. my mistake. that likely means 25% already in, at best, ya? so a potential 75% of 9% still out there. 25 % of that is closer to 1.5-2% best case scenario. 1% would be more realistic considering.

So here's why California is still a grand mystery. In 2016, around 5.1 million people voted in the California primary. Early counts show that 3.2 million Californians have already sent in their ballots. That means, at best, Buttigieg's dropping out is already 50% --at best-- ineffective at shifting his votes to other candidates. Now look at his current polling. He's currently averaging 9%, though his most recent polls are around 7%. For the sake of the the best scenario, if we take 50% off 9%, that leaves 4.5% of his vote left. Let's also take the best case scenario for all candidates when it comes to being the second choice of Buttigieg's supporters, around 25% of 50% of 9% apiece. That means, best case scenario, a given candidate may gain 1-1.5% from Buttigieg dropping out. Best case. After all, even dropping out, a good amount of people will still vote for Buttigieg on Super Tuesday. I'd personally guess any candidate would be lucky to get even 1% boost from Buttigieg's dropping out. .5% is more realistic. Is that enough for Warren, Bloomberg, and Biden, who are all around the error at reaching 15%? @ We'll see.

Biggest Super Tuesday ramification is absolutely how this affects California. It's now unlikely a question of whether anyone else crosses 15%, but how many others cross 15%. The polling regarding Buttigieg second choices isn't reliable, so predictions are very tough. Sanders' best hope would be both himself and Warren gaining enough % to keep Biden and Bloomberg below 15%. Worst case, obviously, is if all Warren, Biden, and Bloomberg all cross 15%. Obviously, for all three other candidates when it comes to California, it's just a matter of reaching 15% and nothing else.

this is going to hurt sanders the most. going to improve biden, bloomberg, and warren's chances of hitting 15% in a loooot of states. in that regard, it probably hurts sanders the most since he's above 15% everywhere and benefitted a lot from others not hitting the line. it also improves warren's argument for staying in the race, which... ok i won't get into it. it'll help sanders at the convention if warren backs sanders. it guarantees sanders loses if she doesn't. but it also is more likely to create a closer race going into the convention, which makes it all the more precarious for sanders. absolutely benefits biden's chances the most. i'd bet contested convention rises very high on 538's forecast as a result.

I think the one thing a lot of folk are missing about how the match was booked is how Cody went in touting the value of his family -- tattoo included. He had his wife and his coach on his side. He showboated during the match touting his family's legacy. And what ultimately happened? It cost him. His family got in his way, distracted him, let MJF get his bearings, and ultimately gave MJF the moment he needed to knock Cody out.

My takeaway following South Carolina is that the numbers still look very good for Sanders and that Biden, despite his win, has to be very nervous. The effort that went into picking up South Carolina was huge, but it also might be impossible to recreate. Biden desperately needs a lot of post-SC momentum just to make a dent into Sanders' potential gains on Super Tuesday. I don't think he's going to get them outside of a few states that may not make much of a difference. Biden's big goals in the next three days are running up Texas and trying to meet the 15% in California, IMO. As for Sanders, he desperately needs to maintain his Super Tuesday polling leads in order to keep the dream of a majority of delegates alive. If he can maintain that 10 pt Texas lead and squash Biden's momentum, it'll be great for him. However, he's also got to challenge the threat that is Warren's persistence in the race. Specifically, he needs to win in Mass. and get her below 15% in California. Both of these would be huge. That said, we're already seeing Sanders' strategy, which is not overfocusing on any single day, but using that cash flow to work on a lot of future states, too. I worry that he's underestimating the threat of a contested convention, but this is still likely smart in the long run. As for the other candidates, I already see it as a two-person race with a Bloomberg wild card. Super Tuesday will be their last day to surprise, but even a surprise isn't going to help their campaigns. It'd be healthier for the race and the party for them to drop, but they're all-but-certain to fight to their last.

This really is the question I have. Biden's going to get a big win, but how much will it affect Super Tuesday? The difference will be between a complete Sanders domination, Sanders being up but in a worrying contested convention range, Biden genuinely being competitive, and Biden doing well, but not well enough to persuade the other moderates to drop out. It's going to be a loong few days before Super Tuesday..

This is my secret hope+bet. Omega's been putting up with Hangman + the Bucks going back and forth. I could so see him snapping. It'd work so well with how he's being pushed in his other storylines, too -- him not feeling like he's in top form anymore, Pac assaulting him and his friends. Would be a great way to get him some heat if he took the opportunity and turned on Hangman when Hangman's so over right now.

Sanders has to resign his seat before August, I believe, in order to trigger a special election. If he doesn't then the Republican Governor gets to pick a replacement. No polling regarding what would happen after. It would be a near-guaranteed Dem seat, especially if Sanders was the nominee, which he would be at that point.

I think these polls from CNN are new and ... wow, that Texas swing. Sanders alone above threshold in California. "In Texas, Sanders holds 29% support among likely primary voters, former Vice President Joe Biden has 20%, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg stands at 18% and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is at 15%. No other candidate reaches double-digits. Sanders (+14) and Bloomberg (+13) have posted the largest gains since a December CNN poll, while Biden has slipped 15 points. Warren has held roughly even. " "The California results suggest the same four contenders hold the most support, though Sanders stands well ahead of the three contending for second place. Sanders holds 35% support, Warren is at 14%, Biden is at 13% and Bloomberg is at 12%. Sanders' support in the state has climbed 15 points since December, while Biden's has slid eight points. Bloomberg has gained seven. " edit: formatted

1. i brought up their friendliness on the debates and the VP shortlist because I see them as tangible points worth acknowledging as part of this nomination process, because they're parts of this campaign and so provide insight into both of their campaigns. i don't disagree that they're friends in the senate. i just think their campaigns say much more about their primary plans. 2. Sure, she and her superpac aren't going to target tennessee and arkansas, but she's ~15% in probably what... 8, 9 states? all 14 might not make sense, but just 3 is crazy, especially when the superpac has so much money to throw around. biden's pac knows a little money can go a long way. it's stunning that warren's isn't even doing that much. i really think this is an important point. 3. the debate is just a visible example of what a candidate is trying to do. and yes, candidates absolutely use debates to showcase their pivots. debates leave lasting impressions. sure, it could be less important than i'm guessing, but it's not -nothing-. it's still something. 2016 is a good example, because the republicans actually did start dropping out once they saw their chances reach levels of warren's -- mostly after losing big contests, of course. like super tuesday should be for warren/buttigieg/klob/steyer. i jsut don't see warren being one of those people to say "full steam ahead" with as much as we know about the upcoming states. maybe warren does believe she just needs to survive super tuesday and then she can push to be a top choice at a contested convention even without more delegates than sanders and biden. that just seems like such a disaster in waiting, though. but maybe i've given warren too much credit?

1. 2008 is completely irrelevant to this conversation. hillary and obama were the top 2 fighting for the nomination. we're talking about a race where warren is in a distant 4th. we're talking about whether warren supports sanders or biden when she drops out or if it came to a contested convention. if your argument is "oh, warren's still got a great chance to win" when why even engage in this conversation. it's built on the assumption that warren doesn't have a chance to win. if you disagree, don't pretend you care about anything else i said. we're having two different discussions and you're not even attempting to engage with me. 2. again, 2016 is completely different. Sanders was in the #2 spot. regardless of whether he had a chance of winning the nomination, he had a huge amount of potential to carry a movement into the convention and change party policy. warren has no such goals, no such potential. at best, she could go into a contested convention and play kingmaker -- which is the entire fucking point of this conversation. whether she's aiming to support biden or sanders. if your argument is that her only goal is to build more leverage for going into a contested convention, that just leads to the same discussion. why she's targeting sanders only and not biden. if leverage was her goal, she wouldn't just be targeting the frontrunner. she'd be going after #2, too. As for the rest, dude, come on. Don't engage in a serious conversation, mostly ignore the context of the conversation -- that Warren's pretty much out of the race at this point -- and then insinuate I just have no fucking idea what I'm talking about because you're confident that you know how politics work and i don't. give me a break. i shouldn't have to explain my background to justify having a political argument because you disagree with my point of view.

Sorry for the long post! Figured I'd make this just so people can agree/disagree with my thought process on this one. See, the problem is that most people's opinion about the Sanders+Warren relationship stems from their skin-deep friendly attitude towards each other on the early debate stage and that report that Sanders was considering the possibility of Warren as VP+Treasury. It's not actually much to base an assumption on. It's especially thin when you consider that Warren has been very loyal to the Democratic Party for a very long time now. She might be much more progressive than most of the party, but she's still a card carrying member. She still chose not to run in 2016 against Clinton. She still chose to not endorse Sanders against Clinton despite his opportunity. She didn't endorse Clinton, but there were several reports that Warren was on Clinton's shortlist for VP or cabinet positions. She doesn't do activist votes like Sanders -- she follows the party whip. In so many words, Warren may not love Biden, but she absolutely trusts the party and powers that be that are making him the more moderate front-runner. Another other important factor to consider is Warren's new superpac. This isn't just some random superpac. This is an incredibly wealthy powerhouse superpac with a clear and focused agenda. It was formed specifically at a date where it wouldn't have to reveal its donors until 60% of delegates are assigned. It's already spent 14 million dollars and is certain to spend more. 9 million on three Super Tuesday states alone. I won't argue that the states Warren's superpac is targeting aren't important. Being viable in both Cali and Texas would mean she'd probably get more delegates than Buttigieg + Klob. And she needs to win Mass. otherwise she'll be asked to drop out. However, its strategy very clearly points to a picture of targeting Sanders-strong states and avoiding Biden-strong states. Warren is in the error range of 15% in more than half of Super Tuesday states, but her Superpac is targeting just 3. That's legit crazy, considering how wealthy the pac is. For comparison's sake, Biden's superpack (which spent almost 7 million in Iowa alone) is spending just under $700,00 across... 14 states. That's what dedicated Superpacs planning to support candidates do. So why isn't Warren's doing that? And as much as folk have disagreed with me, I still think it's important to bring up that Warren is being forecasted to have just a 1% (.6% now) chance at the nomination period. She's already out. She's guaranteed to know this. Any candidate in her position should be pivoting to their post-dropout plan, like Buttigieg clearly is. Yet she spent the last debate attacking Sanders as much or more than other candidates (okay, Buttigieg was clearly more enthusiastic in his attacks). If Warren was planning eventual Sanders support, this past week would have been the most crucial time for her to lay off and focus instead on not just Bloomberg, but also Biden. Except she didn't attack Biden whatsoever. This is the week we should have seen who Warren was planning to support -- maybe we did. While I do think the Warren/Sanders feud was a lot of political theater, I do think it showed that their "relationship" isn't as deep as many think. I also think it shows Warren's more involved with the strategic planning of the party to try and hurt Sanders at the polls. Warren is an incredibly smart person. She's very well known for behind-the-scenes politicking. If Warren was going to support Sanders eventually, I have zero doubt we'd be seeing significant evidence of it, not just in the past week or two, but for months now. A perceived Warren+Sanders alliance is part of what helped launch Sanders above Biden, after all. Warren's support could, i think, easily be helping Sanders dominate on Super Tuesday. But instead she's helped hurt him (debate + super pac). In the grand scheme of things, if we're measuring this on a scale it slides toward Warren not backing Sanders -- even if there's no absolutely definitive evidence one way or another. It's not a certainty. And I'll repeat that I'm not even saying that I'm persuaded. I just believe it's very much something folk need to consider when looking toward scenarios of a contested convention or post-Super Tuesday factions. I hope I'm wrong! I genuinely do.

Though both Biden and Bloomberg have since gotten good polls recently and Sanders does seem to be dipping a little. That does explain why Biden is so far up though, since he was polling 30+ at the start of February.

it's really a tough call. for one, sanders needs every delegate he can to try and either reach 50% or as close as possible. but on the other hand, he needs biden to be as far behind him as possible. that's if -- and it's a big if -- sanders even has a chance if he doesn't get 50% delegates. in this case, it'd probably be to biden's benefit if buttigieg made the threshold, to sanders' benefit if steyer made the threshold.

Hm? How is it weird? If anything it's a weird assumption to take for granted that Warren would shift to Sanders support. Sanders and Warren haven't been on the same page since her accusation about Sanders' alleged sexist comment. I made this point several days ago that apparently made quite a few people angry, but we've entered a part of the race where only three people have realistic chances at winning the presidency -- Sanders, Biden, and Bloomberg. The candidates know this better than voters. As such, this is the time of the election when the remaining candidates "circle the wagons" so to speak. Buttigieg made his surrogacy for Biden obvious this past debate, but it's also clear from his campaign goals. Warren, if she was planning to shift into being a Sanders surrogate, would be making similar moves -- tho not as unsubtle or amatuer as Buttigieg's. Instead, Warren attacked Sanders as much as any other candidate this past debate. She didn't target Biden meaningfully otherwise. Yeah, I just don't see it anymore. At best, I can see Warren choosing not to endorse. But again, I'd love to be wrong.

No, you cited the rules and then misinterpreted them. I corrected you. " those who elected them " refers to THE ELECTORATE. Candidates do not nominate their own delegates. The entire fucking point of the recent rewriting of the rules to disallow superdelegates from taking over the race was to get rid of the behavior you're saying is ok. Delegates can't switch votes in the first round (outside of a complicated in a handful states which likely won't be used). They're PLEDGED DELEGATES. If delegates could switch to who they pleased, they'd just be superdelegates. I'm dying here. This is such a simple idea. You don't think if candidates could give away their delegates the media wouldn't be talking about it? That we wouldn't be hearing about a contested convention, but rather a coalition of moderates pooling their delegates? We're not hearing about that because it's not something they can do in the first round.

What? I'm confident in my understanding of the rules, but more than open to be proven wrong. Delegates must vote for who they are elected to support. That's why forecasts like 538 can be confident in their scenarios and don't have to account for compromises in the first round of voting. After the first round, delegates are given leeway to change their votes, but superdelegates are also introduced/ This has nothing to do with "Bernie against the world," and frankly I'm tired of hearing so many people say it to dismiss others based on who they may or may not support in the election.

I agree, but that's also the point I wanted to make. Even in Biden's -best case scenario- it makes clear just how near-inevitable Sanders winning a plurality is at this point. But anything short of a majority for him is guaranteed to throw the party into upheaval. This isn't intended to be a pro-Sanders post so much a as a dire warning that the party is on the verge of a potential disaster. Even if everyone tried to swing to Biden to try and prevent a nightmare contested convention, it likely wouldn't be enough. edit: to punctuate my point. Here's Sanders' best case scenario. This is if he wins South Carolina, which seems increasingly unlikely, and then wins every Super Tuesday state. He'll only -just- get 50% of the delegates. That's the state of the race. Sanders being stuck between 40% and 50% of the delegates, but the Democrats going into the convention with a clear intent to deny Sanders the candidacy.

I personally have zero faith in the party or any of the candidates "doing the right thing" so to speak if Sanders comes into the convention with a strong delegate lead. This isn't a matter of sharing power. The existing party structure views Sanders' as a wholesale coup, an erasure of everyone and everything within the party power structure. They won't give in if they have even a single out.

So here's what Super Tuesday could look like if Biden wins big in South Carolina. AKA, Biden's best-case scenario. He'd have a strong performance, but would likely still fall far short of even a plurality of delegates Super Tuesday. Note that a lot of these delegates come from Biden reaching the California delegate threshold and beating Warren, which polling has been iffy on recently. I hope this helps folk see how much of a disaster we're headed towards if Sanders starts to fall off. It's increasingly unlikely Sanders gets a plurality of voters going into the convention, even if Biden makes a comeback. And a contested convention will lead to Sanders being denied the nomination by superdelegates regardless of his lead.

Even if Warren encouraged her delegates to support Sanders at the convention, which isn't guaranteed, she wouldn't be able to do so until the second round of voting when Superdelegates were introduced to the vote. That's ~700 more delegates. So instead of ~2000 delegates he'd need ~2350. Warren's delegates wouldn't be enough, he'd have to pull in a lot more from another source, which isn't likely.

yup. not surprised by this. the debate was too chaotic and general viewers don't like that. meanwhile, while sanders was attacked with some good barbs, just being the front runner and staying on-message is enough to reinforce that idea that he's leadership material.

this is my take too. i thought sanders had some decent answers to hard questions, but they were town hall answers. not debate answers. not answers where someone trying to shank him is going to turn it around immeduately, or where an audience that can afford $1700 tickets can boo you. he'll benefit from the debate being shit, but if he wants to make super tuesday a definitive win he needs to refocus the narrative. this debate just sucked and half the people on that stage should end their campaigns already.

y'all supporting warren pretending you don't know what's on the line with a biden nomination are being crazy disingenuous. you wouldn't be supporting warren if you didn't understand what's on the line. the gap between progressives and moderates is staggering when it comes to policy across the board. same as clinton supporters all know what a lie it was in 2016 being told there was no difference between her and trump. so no, don't expect to be coddled and told "hey, warren's still got a 1% chance. vote for your dreams." the reality is stark. sanders, a progressive who will fight for virtually everything warren stands for too, has a good shot at the presidency. but it's not in the slightest certain. and the other option is biden/bloomberg. so folk voting super tuesday should know those odds now rather than after Super Tuesday when things will be cemented. if your goal is to put a progressive in the white house, if you can step beyond "fuck sanders," now is the time to vote strategically. this isn't november. it's not an open race anymore.

If that's your takeaway then I'm sorry I failed to represent my point well enough. I'm a Warren fan and a Sanders fan. I wanted nothing more than it to be a 2-way race for the presidency between them. My point was trying to make clear that Warren simply doesn't have a path to the nomination anymore. It would require polling errors or a shift in public views never before seen in the USA. I say the same thing about Buttigieg and Klobuchar. Steyer, too. They have no paths. There's an incredible opportunity to put a progressive on the path to the White House and every vote, especially in the primaries, helps.Regarding 1.) Warren would not be able to give her delegates to Sanders in the first round, meaning the 400 Superdelegates would come into play and 100% erase any potential gains Warren's delegates would add to Sanders' pool. Her endorsement and support through the rest of the primary would matter more. Regarding 2.) This is certainly a way to look at it if you're 100% with any of the Democrats winning the nomination. My advice is just for those who prioritize a progressive winning vs. a moderate.

I'll never begrudge anyone voting their conscious if they genuinely don't care who ultimately wins the Dem nomination, whether it's a progressive or a moderate. But if you do care, we've reached the point where it's genuinely a 2 (or an unlikley 3)-way contest. It's either going to be Sander or it's going to be Biden (with a chance that Biden crumples and Bloomberg takes the spot. Polling can be bad, but it's not so bad that Warren, Buttigieg, or Klobuchar are going to win a plurality of delegates anymore. We have an excellent idea of how the Super Tuesday states will go and even if those three have better-than-expected showings, they're going to lose so bad that they won't be able to catch up in the 60% of remaining delegates even if they get 20 pt+ bumps. There are definitely a lot of folk here who probably prefer Warren, followed by Biden over Bernie. Not trying to discourage anyone. But if folk do care about getting a progressive as the nominee, now is the time to acknowledge strategic voting is key. It's time to pick Sanders over Warren.

Marauders #8 - Incredible issue. Plot didn't move along much but I am 100% okay with that. It just focused on everyone's reaction to the and all of those reactions were incredible. The Iceman scene, wowow, and the Emma + Storm scene was absolutely perfect. Between Hickman's Emma and Marauders Emma, she's by far my favorite character in the new runs. New Mutants #7 - Funniest fucking X-Men issue I've read in a very long time. Incredibly paced despite the jumping around. And yet more great character work. Can ya'll believe Wolfsbane was murdered not so long ago? And now she's here licking orbs and being adorable? guh. I will admit I was expecting a conclusion with more impact, but it wasn't important. It ended well. The most disappointing thing is that we're not getting more of these characters immediately. I want more of them. Finished the X-Men of the week. Both Wolverine #1 and Marauders #8 were great. Better than great. I loved 'em. I wish I had an omnibus already so I could just keep reading. Wolverine did such a good job of making it clear how much of a good guy he is, but also how uncontrollably dangerous. Kind to his friends and a machine of death to his enemies. I didn't like the way the first story started. I don't like how often happens in Hickman's X-Men period. But it was a very good after that. The second story was excellent too. Most especially Wolverine's interactions with . They made super imposing and nightmarish. Compared to the other villains who have been shown, Wolverine managed to make look like a genuine villain still. I'm not so into the other bad guys in the second story, but it still developed well and hints at cool things happening in the future. All around well told, which is all I need.SO GOOD

i just completely disagree. sanders staying on-message, repeating sentiment he's stood by already for decades, and not making a bigger issue out of it is absolutely the best way to dismantle a bomb. not answering or flip flopping without justification are both explosively awful scenarios, especially for a frontrunner. being consistent, even regarding topics that could be considered controversial, is bernie's best strategy. he's got more than one "strong opinion" from his younger years and so far none of them have turned into a major issue in the press. it wouldn't work for everyone. not one believes most politicians have conviction. but for sanders it does.

it's definitely going to be interesting. if sanders goes up there and it's a firing squad, it could definitely help swing some momentum. on the other hand, if warren's still going to target bloomberg, if buttigieg and klobuchar still carry on their rivalry, and if steyer keeps his soft sanders support and general call for unity, sanders is going to come off as strong as ever. it's also going to help sanders that the debate on CBS will likely be much less contentious. the last debate was designed for drama. cbs will likely remain much more neutral and issue-focused. sanders tends to perform much better in issue-focused debates where he can stump and do his "grandpa's got a good point" voice.

maybe. personally i'd lean towards that being likely. but we've entered a different stage of the race now. everyone attacked biden when he was the frontrunner because everyone had a legitimate chance at the nomination. that's just not going to happen anymore. there are going to be very clear factions as candidates support their allies and attack their ally's opponents. we just don't know the state of the game fully. it's made extra complicated by the possibility that everyone except sanders could be fighting not for first place, but for second place, hoping for a contested convention. we don't know who warren actually sees herself allied with. we don't know if buttigieg and klobuchar are genuinely competing still or are just part of the contested convention game. it's going to be a wild debate, just you wait.

true, and also true that california plays a big role in that, but the bigger delegate math as to whether sanders will be insurmountable won't be coming from the western states where he's already certain to win big. it'll come from the other states where if sanders does especially well or badly will show his true full-primary strength. sanders could lose 50 delegates over what's expected in California, but still be called the race-winner if he's pulling in nevada-like numbers in states he was supposed to tie or barely lead.

definitely a lot of factors. in 538's forecast, it already assumes Sanders is losing the state. while winning it would be great for him, losing it ain't going to harm his chances meaningfully. not to mention it's a 3-way race for first -- the difference in delegates between first and third is going to be minimal. Sanders could waste days there and see absolutely no movement. Biden, however, needs to win that state. Sanders is instead focusing on Super Tuesday, which starts just 3 days after South Carolina. Texas alone has 228 pledged delegates to SC's 54. Depending on how much he wins Super Tuesday by, he could end the race overnight. Also important is, as we know, Biden has spend $0 in Super Tuesday states yet. He's also pretty much broke. Every day Sanders spends there now is a step up on his biggest competition. It also gives Sanders as much time as possible to counter Bloomberg's long-running ad campaigns in those states. Yeah, Sanders going to Super Tuesday states is definitely the right call.

we know that his support base has always been soft. that is, his supporters leaned towards him but were never 100% like so many of sanders' supporters. we know this because harris, warren, and buttigieg's pre-primary surges came directly at biden's expense. as their numbers grew, biden's shrank, and as their numbers shrank, biden's grew again. everyone kinda laughs at harris' campaign, but she may have actually been the one that ruined biden. she showed everyone he was weak. he never gained the peoples' confidence. at this point, pre-primary, no one was sure whether biden's campaign could hold onto its lead. then came that pre-iowa debate where buttigieg+sanders+klobuchar came across dominant and biden looked lost. then it came down to campaigning. buttigieg managed to secure the vast majority of iowa rural areas, areas biden took for granted, largely based off of a swing of last-minute deciders. iowa legit killed biden's campaign. from there, people just began leaking -- white voters to buttigieg, klobuchar, warren, and even bernie. black voters to bloomberg, steyer, and bernie. latino voters virtuall all to bernie. biden's tower was built on quicksand and while sanders likely could never have knocked it over, the other moderates had much better positioning to do so. and now it's too late for biden to persuade them to come back.

to the point you're making about political fallout specifically, you're absolutely right. question for my curiosity -- the democrats expect that kind of fallout when they made the vote?

oh we're really going here then. how many people y'all know who have died from not having healthcare? from having shit healthcare? how many people have you watched wilt away while you sit, knowing you can do nothing? how many friends have you lost to suicide, people you've begged to get help but have no answer for when they say they can't afford therapy, psychiatrists, or livesaving drugs? i can't count the number of people i've lost on two hands anymore. and i'm seeing the inevitability of more joining that list within my family and friend circle as we speak. 68,000 people die literally every year from lack of health insurance and being underinsured. sixty eight fucking thousand people a year. so don't tell me universal healthcare isn't one of the most meaningful movements of the modern era. you can take that shit with you when you get out of my face.
