Thread Hogwarts Legacy senior producer Troy Leavitt, a game dev who used to make anti-feminist and pro gamer-gate videos (staff post added)(Up: Resigns)
This seems to be the appropriate thread to discuss the matter (certainly more appropriate than this thread): Personally I was beyond disgusted by the Blitzchung affair and how they handled it; and have boycotted their games ever since, but a forum-wide ban on Blizzard doesn't seem quite realistic right now given a) they're a much larger part of the gaming industry than WB, and b) they have made sure to cover their asses with plenty of plausible deniability (as opposed to Rowling and Leavitt who are making their stances aggressively clear). But perhaps you can mak a strong case for all Blizzard game OTs to have a disclaimer at the top a bit like the CP2077 OT had. Anyway, this is my last post on the matter in this thread, to prevent derailing it any further.

Kingsley and Pearce are both amazing in Iron Man 3; definitely the highlight of a movie that's already top tier MCU. The synergy and contrast between both of their characters is simply amazing considering how little time they are even simultaneously onscreen.

Thread Devolver's Next RPG "Loop Hero" Preview (IGN)
I had a lot of trouble until I realized setting down Lighthouse cards/tiles was messing me up something fierce; take it out of your deck. The reason is you don't want to complete loops as quickly as possible, you want the exact opposite. The lich levels up with each loop, so you want to put down as many rocks / mountains / meadows as possible in as few loops as you can; in turn this means you want to fight a lot of enemies (also because they give experience that when filled allows you to choose a perk). Tiles like the Spider Coccoon can help a lot in that regard, as well as some of the semi-secret combos . Ideally you should fight the lich around loop 6/7. Set down rocks in a 3x3 pattern to create a Mountain Peak, then set mountains close to each other (use rocks for tiles that won't have many adjacent mountains, like map edges). Set meadows next to non-meadow tiles to make them bloom and provide 3 heal per sunrise instead of 2 (you can easily do this by setting treasuries in a Chess Knight pattern). If you're close to summoning the lich (the bar that summons it is filled when placing down tiles and drained when deleting it), but are relatively close to the camp, hold your cards and don't put down any until you're past the camp. This will give you an extra loop of pulling and putting down mountains, etc.

That's a far stronger claim; all we know is that she didn't know. A lot of actors aren't given out details of their characters in advance, especially twists, and especially if they don't add anything they can work with. In this case the revelation is a surprise to her character as well.

Thread Random thought: Millennials might wind up as the most disliked generation.
The thing you need to understand is this is all a function of time. Most of my high school mates were left leaning, thought of themselves as revolutionaries, dreamed to change the world to make it fair, went to demonstrations against the government, etc. Then they got married, settled down, had kids, got traditional jobs (or even became entrepreneurs with employees of their own). Literally the same guy that chastised people when were teens for not attending a public demonstration in support of the government using a percentage of taxes to end poverty, told me a few months ago that he fired one of his employees because she had used swear words (in a private environment, mind). It's depressing but it's true; almost everyone shifts conservative over time. I swore that it wouldn't happen to me, and for the most part it didn't, but very few of the people I know from back them fared well in that regard; you need an open mind, and continuous vigilance, self-examination and self-updating.

And I wouldn't have it any other way. :D But yeah, I mean mostly from boomers; we got of shit back then, believe me. We were coming of age when computers started becoming ubiquitous and the Internet became a thing; the culture shock was staggering for them and they needed someone to blame for the world suddently becoming incomprehensible to them. Of course, once new generations appeared that had grown up with computers and internet as kids and were even more tech-savvy and inscrutable to them (not to mention in more vulnerable positions and less likely to fight back), they switched targets.

Uh, no. We gen X-ers got tons of shit from boomers growing up (and now get shit from millennials, etc.). Every generation thinks they're the best and hates every other generation. Older generations are "old and out of touch", newer generations are "childish and braindead"; it's just the way it is. The sooner you make peace with the fact that every subsequent generation will inevitably hate you, the better.

Hahah, don't worry about that, through 20+ years of coding I've had to deal with pretty much everything up to and including people that "subclassed" by copying the whole class file and changing a couple of things in the new one (then, for some reason, making the new class an actual subclass of the old one). Worst case I bail out, best case I share good coding practices with you! But again this would be sometime in the near future because my plate is very much full right now.

To be fair I haven't given the new Unity control system a try, but Rewired is so complete, exhaustive and "just works" with so many controllers that I doubt I'll ever give the former a try.

Depending on how physics-based or tile-based your game is, you may not want to use colliders at all. Even if you use colliders, you may want to use capsules rather than rectangles to make it easier for characters to navigate corners. Re: buildings: depends on what you want to do. If you want your characters to walk behind buildings, then the building collider would only be its base. If you want to prevent this, then yeah, it would be the entire building sprite. Re: enemy attacks: you could indeed use different colliders, but I would certainly would not; I'd still use the smaller, player-feet collider. It just feels wrong that an enemy can hit you by visually grazing your sprite's head, even though logically their attack wouldn't have actually reached the tile where your character is standing. To take it to its logical extreme, It just doesn't make sense that an enemy attacking from the north is able to hit e.g. a very tall character from far away. In general, try to keep player hurtboxes and enemy hitboxes small, while keeping player hitboxes and enemy hurtboxes big. It's always more satisfying to err on the side of the player whenever their attacks graze enemies or viceversa.

Ugh, I totally missed that. Sorry about that. >_<, I have no clue how much visibility indiedb has, but I would guess a lot less than Steam. I'm sure you'll get lots of feedback once you release it there, whether that's this festival or the next. I would recommend making leaving feedback as painless as possible, e.g. include a link in the demo itself to do so (to a Discord, email, Steam forums or whatever). If you mean you haven't got feedback from people here, don't use this as a measurement of interest from the general public. I rarely have the time to play pretty much any of the games here even when they're my jam, and I would guess the rest of devs here are the same. Hence why we need the "try our games" thread I mentioned above...

Congratulations on the steady progress! Looking forward to screenshots of your game, and what it's about. These "obvious in hindsight" moments are like the game telling you what it wants to be. Rami Ismail puts it best: "you can't make the game you want in your head; it's impossible". A good developer will harness and embrace that feedback loop and make the game that it's meant to be, rather than what they wanted to make. :)

That's fair, but also keep very present that correlating attention with the quality of your game is a) unrealistic (since visibility is a result of a million factors and the quality of your game is one of the smallest one), and b) potentially very demoralizing and damaging to your self-perception of your game. I mean, Among Us, the game now making its devs rich with sales in the millions, earned them like $40 during its original release week. It was entirely unknown until it got a chain of attention from youtubers. If that's not a mindblowing lesson in the correlation (or lack thereof) between intrinsic quality and engagement / visibility (as well as the fundamental role of influencers), frankly I don't know what is.

This is really, really important, especially the part about "the hook". You want your game to be "like XCOM, but [x]!", never "just like XCOM". Because, as you say, that begs the question "why would I play this instead of XCOM?". That said:Looking again at Void Marauder's , your game does have a pretty interesting pitch. Out of curiosity, who have you recruited for feedback that is not reporting back? I see the page has no demo, so I'm assuming friends and family? Don't judge an indie game's potential popularity from that because most people aren't that interested in indie games to begin with, and even less specific subgenres like XCOM-likes. You can definitely find a sizable, devoted audience for these within the larger ocean of gamers in general. I also see you have 2000 followers on Twitter, which is 20x what I have, hahah. You must definitely be doing something right!I really should put aside some time to make three new threads: - The next OT. - The "so you want to get into game development" thread (where I link to a modern and editable version of that ancient post of mine about the University of Michigan courses, which BTW are apparently getting a full revamp this year). - The "so you want to test games and give feedback" thread (where players and devs can meet and have the latter provide keys or whatever to the former, so they can give feedback). ... and then have each link to each other for visibility. Unfortunately I'm currently pretty busy with v.2.0 of my own game which I released recently in beta form to testers and I'm getting an unexpectedly (but in hindsight, given that the previous version was from March, predictable) amount of feedback for it; I'm having trouble even replying to everyone. I generally disconnect on Sundays for mental hygiene so I'll see if I can set aside some time to prepare the above OTs.

Just as an exercise, the solutions that came to my mind were: - For the readability of the gun, color the gun a different color when it's gone through a portal enough that it will shoot through it. I guess the way to compute that would be to check if the segment from the tip of the gun to the player's eyes goes through a portal itself. - For the "looking up" issue, limit how far up the player can look (e.g. 45º max, or less), although of course the viability of that depends on the rest of the map and what it requires). As a bonus that solves a common issue with FPS that don't have that limit, where looking straight up and spinning around can be really disorienting. :)

It's probably more like 100x or 1000x harder, especially since having your character lie down in bed fully armored is super easy, but yeah, large pieces of cloth accomodating to the movement of a character under them without said character clipping is indeed really freaking hard. I guess the easiest way is showing only your character's head and an opaque, thick blanket, and then animate the blanket, but animating your characters actually getting into the bed, like lifting the sheets and getting under them? You're going to get a fade to black or conspicuous "camera looking at nothing" shot 99% of the time.Petting dogs is much easier to animate though, especially if all your dogs are the same size, but even if they're not. Thread Era, sell me on the MCU. Is it even for me?
Both Winter Soldier and Iron Man 3 are among the best Marvel movies IMHO, and are very different from each other. Winter Soldier is a spy thriller, while Iron Man 3 is a more straightforward fun superhero movie. Iron Man 2 is one of the weakest movies in the entire MCU, so I can perfectly understand why you'd be reluctant to watch 3, but trust me, it's so much better, and if you liked Avengers it's very likely you'll like it. So my recommendation is to watch Iron Man 3, then Winter Soldier. If this doesn't give you any momentum to keep watching, then give it up, the MCU is not for you (which is obviously perfectly fine). Edit: also echoing the "watch Guardians of the Galaxy" recommendation above, because it's again a different genre (space opera) and it has no connection to any other movies you haven't watched yet.

This has come up three times in your replies and I think it's something that may need pursuing. In particular "must" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. "Must" why? Because she feels Republicans can't all be that transphobic? Try to make her realize the onus is on Republicans (or anyone else defending them) to state a reason to oppose it other than transphobia, and that failure to even explore what that reason could be is equivalent to knowingly dismissing smoking gun evidence simply because it doesn't conform to her prior beliefs, which is by definition irrational. It's easy for people in a forum to call out for someone else to cut out a friendship, when there's nothing at stake for them except signaling how committed and idelogically pure they are. Nobody can decide for you which is the best option in your case, which I would at least try to frame as the one likely to cause you the least pain overall.

Thread Thoughts on long-term backfire from PlayStation's all-western internal focus shift?
Most companies aren't in the business of predicting the future and spending money "just in case"; they simply react to changing markets. If at any time in the future, it makes sense for them to increase production of games made in Japan (which frankly seems unlikely), then they will (re)open studios in Japan; simple as that. It doesn't make financial sense to keep them open in the interim for a questionable gain in an unlikely scenario. You are taking your personal desires, setting them as , and writing above it the financial justifications why that makes sense. This is an exceedingly Era thing to do; but, as always, it produces an entirely arbitrary reasoning without the slightest anchorage on reality or hard data.

Thread Were all of the enemy models outsourced for Bravely Default II?
I thought the thread was going to be about the opposite, i.e. the enemies looking . While that's certainly a possible takeaway, the OP could also be referring to the inconsistency looking as if they were made by two dev teams with no communication between them, that targeted entirely different looks. In a game you want to allocate resources to achieve consistency in addition to quality, because otherwise the "better looking" elements will stick out and make the rest look worse (exactly what's happened here). Sometimes the simpler look is a stylistic choice but you still want to enforce it throughout the game; e.g. a COD enemy model in SuperHOT would look super awkward. That said a simpler explanation could be e.g. that characters and backgrounds are reused across different points of views due to being used for map exploration and cutscenes, and therefore need to be more aggressively optimized, as opposed to enemies that only appear in combat.

As far as I know, no explanation was ever given for that transition; my own theories include the oppressive Functionist government having a hand on it, or perhaps lack of contact with organic species that rightfully avoided Cybertron like the plague (Anode mentions it's this contact that made her question her own gender).

So that's another factor to take into account if you're around this age or older; it's like having glasses all the time so you can't take them off to focus on things that are very close. But it's still a very good tradeoff, and even if I end up needing close range glasses it will be better than needing glasses pretty much all the time.

Unity is perfectly fine for 2D games. There's plenty of high-profile 2D games that have been made in Unity, like Hearthstone, Cuphead, Ori and the Blind Forest, Enter the Gungeon, Night in the Woods, Gorogoa, etc etc. is 2D / pixel art. If you're making a pixel art game, it does take a bit of care to set up the camera in order to ensure pixels are scaled evenly, if that's important to you. You also have to take some care if you're using Unity's particle system, as that works in 3D and can render above things you don't expect unless you have everything's Z coordinate (depth) set perfectly. That is unfortunately a question I myself can't answer because, coming from a coding background, codeless game development is something I've never tangled with. I do know the latest versions of Unity now offer a codeless system similar to Unreal's blueprints, but I have no clue how they compare to each other, having using neither. Sorry. :(I was frankly expecting him to fight big spherical coronaviruses, but this is kind of even better. :D

I don't know how to word this in a non-confrontational manner, but the cold, hard truth is that you'll never be able to discuss the game with anyone that isn't fine with giving money to both a transphobe and a GG supporter to play a videogame. I don't think it's that much of a stretch to consider it's for the best if that discussion doesn't happen on Era anyway.

iunderstoodthatreference.gifI don't know how much this will count for, and apologies in advance for, uh, backseat moderation or whatever this is considered as, but my two cents here is that talking about one single videogame should not ever trump the confort and wellbeing of our transgender members. There's hundreds of sites that people wanting to discuss the game can go; I'm sure it will have its own subreddit, discord, etc. This game should not have a place in Era, especially after the CP2077 thread debacle. I understand it's a tougher choice for the mod team than it is to me to condemnt it, with potential future ramifications for the board, but every choice is a sacrifice and I think we as a community should start putting our actions where our mouths are. This may be shocking but Era isn't the only place in the world where you can discuss videogames.

Oooooh, I had no clue; yeah, that explains it. So they're putting that Honkai / Genshin money into more new games; it's very smart of them not to put all their eggs in a single basket, and good for gamers to get more games out of it. That doesn't make sense whatsoever. They made two full countries in the base game for 100M; should we expect new countries per year? So all of Teyvat will be done by early 2022? Literally doesn't add up. It feels like they ramped up production based on the huge spike of money rolling in from launch, but I don't see how that's sustainable long-term. That said, if anything they've demonstrated to really know what they're doing so far, so I really hope to be wrong, and that they are indeed accounting for post-launch decline.

Right, but that's the best month the game is ever going to get. Gacha games normally make bank at the beginning, when people are in the honeymoon period, before they exhaust current content and add them to their game rotation or leave entirely. Scaling up production that much based on first month income is a bit of an iffy decision. The takeaway however is that they're going all in with the game and investing the money back into it. That's very good news for its players as long as the game doesn't overextend so much that it becomes a problem. So far they've demonstrated a lot of savvyiness in both game develoment and management, so I would expect them to scale back down if the cash stops flowing.

Off to a great start, hahah. My advice would be to just click and watch GoldHeart's video and see if that piques your interest.Absolutely do NOT start with Unreal especially if you intend to learn coding. The two approaches to Unreal are either code-free (using Blueprints), or very advanced coding (C++, which has manual memory allocation / deletion). Unity is a far better choice for learning to code (uses C# which is much more friendly and easier to get into). It's very risky to give anyone life advice, but certainly my biggest regret with game development is not having gotten into it earlier. If game dev is what you want to do, absolutely go for it, it's insanely rewarding. You can definitely speedrun them if you have the free time. I did so with the earlier iteration (finished in about two months) and I never felt overwhelmed.

Thread Painlessly learn to make games with free online university courses and more
If the answer to any of the above is "yes", then this is the thread for you! These days there's no shortage of tutorials to learn how to make games: There's so many, in fact, that the very task of deciding which ones to go with can feel overwhelming in itself, and second-guessing all the time if you should switch to a different set of tutorials can be very distracting. With this thread, I aim to alleviating as much as possible of that choice paralysis, and recommend just a couple of different options that I think are the cream of the crop as far as introductions to game development is concerned. Word of warning that both of my picks focus on Unity. I personally think Unity is as close to the Goldilocks principle choice of "easy enough to get into, powerful enough to do whatever you want" for game development environments. Everyone has its favorite system and Unity has some bullshit like every other, but I've heard enough praise from people coming to Unity from other devenvs that I feel reasonably sure in recommending it. An advantage of both picks being Unity-based is that they can complement each other very well. You can follow one, the other, or both to get a wider, fuller understanding of Unity and game development as a whole. Without further ado, here's my personal picks! A bit of an intro here. I actually learned to use Unity with the previous, older version of these courses, and they were so good and engaging that in a couple of months I was entirely prepared to make my own game from scratch. The best news is that they've been recently completely reworked from the ground up to focus even more intensively on game development and are now entirely imparted by the one that's by far my favorite instructor of the older course, Brian Winn. I really can't overstate how engaging and entertaining he makes learning. These are fully fledged college courses that are purportedly paid, but there's a handy option to audit them for free. They start from the very beginning with absolutely no assumptions about your skill level other than you can turn on a computer and use a mouse; this includes no prior experience with coding. To do this, you need to click on each individual course (rather than the specialization), then click the "Enroll for Free" button (which will take you to a "try 7 days for free), then look for a tiny hyperlink at the very bottom (you may need to scroll down) that says "Audit the course". This will let you access all of the course materials for free without any time limit; you just don't get the exams or the certificate at the end. A partnership between Unity and LEGO, this brand new, interactive in-editor tutorial walks you through all of its features using a game created explicitly for that purpose, based on the well-known LEGO bricks and minifigures. Our very own member and aptly named has also partnered with Unity to bring you a step-by-step video walkthrough of how to download and use both Unity and the tutorial itself! Feel free to post about your experiences with either (or both) of these courses, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck, too. :)

From the enroll page: Go as fast as you can - the faster you go, the more you save. The smartest / cheapest option would be to audit the courses first, then enroll and take all of the exams to get the certificate. I guess you could technically even do the latter within the free trial week and get the certificate for free? Hmmm... Alternatively, you can sign up for Coursera Plus for €325 a year which apparently gives you access to this and a lot of other courses. (prices in Euros because that's what it shows to me).

All of these are very step-by-step so any student's project is going to be almost identical to every other unless you keep tinkering with them. It's not like every vendor in the world happily paying you hard cash for your two hundred wolf giblets is much less immersion breaking that said wolves dropping money anyway. Just have it silently added to your cash balance.Several other RPGs use that system too and it's a pretty good alternative indeed, as it at least gives you something to look forward to when selling them.

That's not conductive to any kind of discussion, other than looking for the biggest cherrypicked appeal to authority for your side. This is a message board, not a law court. You said there's a difference between lyrics and threats, and I quoted actual threats from Hasél. Instead of addressing that, you then replied with a tweet of Joaquim Bosch saying there's less freedom now than back then and comparing Hasél's lyrics to Tip & Coll cracking jokes about Carrero Blanco. That's a complete non-sequitur to the discussion we were having; what does it have to do with whether Hasél's lyrics are threats? So I ask you again (, not some "expert"); is that point of view? Do you think Hasél's lyrics are the same to Tip & Coll's jokes and both should be treated equally?

The Expanse is probably the better show, although both are excellent and easily the best sci-fi shows outthere. The main difference is that Expanse takes a few episodes to get going (also for the average viewer to even get their bearings about the setting, if you're not into e.g. hard sci-fi novels), while Galactica opens with a hell of a bang; this is out of necessity due to the different stakes on each show and what they each focus in. Expanse is a bit more character-based, with more realistic, flawed and and nuanced characters vs Galactica's larger-than-life archetypes; it also doesn't help that the first episodes focus a lot on what's, at that time at least, the straightforward boy-scout character (Holden), as an audience surrogate to anchor the show. My SO straight out didn't like the first few episodes of the Expanse, and yet within that season it ended up being one of her favorite shows and having her completely and utterly hooked. It's the poster child of "it gets better"; I would advice anyone getting to at least the end of season 1. If you don't like it by then, you probably never will so give it up.

"Experimentation" is something you can do on your main account. If you care about your ranking so much that you find the idea of it dropping down temporarily due to a few losses, there's no other word to describe that but insecure. That said, we're all insecure in some or other way, and insecurity about a videogame is a rather harmless thing in the grand scheme of things. I try to keep an open mind, and to understand the appeal of things even when they're not for me. Vtubers is one of these things; I do understand the appeal, even if they're not for me, but I can't fault anyone for finding them weird, regardless of age. Every generation baffles the one that came behind with something new. Whether rock, rap, comics, videogames, youtubers or vtubers, there will always be something that the generation before will find incomprehensible strange. The most boomer thought of it all is thinking this won't happen to you when you grow older, because it will. Your kids or whatever generation comes after you will popularize something you find utterly impenetrable. My only objection in all of this is with the use of "boomer" to describe this essential, perennial component of human nature. Even separating "boomer" from its strict meaning of "baby boomer", it was originally used to describe a very baby boomer, out-of-touch line of thought, believing the younger generation is defective in some way (and thus at fault for the widespread struggles and hardships they face) while failing to acknowledge how their own generation simply had it much easier. It's the generational equivalent of privilege and "lift yourself by your bootstraps", which is why it has a very definite meaning. When we use boomer to describe "anyone weirded out by some new thing", and do so even regardless of age (again, anyone believing that only the older general public would be mystified by vtubers is living in a really secluded bubble), we're dilluting its meaning, and entirely defanging it as a criticism. When everyone can say "OK boomer" as a zinger for not liking something new that we like, it really has no meaning anymore. Which is a shame, because the original meaning managed to encapsulate a very valid criticism, and acknowledged an important rift between generations that's crucial to understanding modern-day left/right politics.

This may be true in the US because of the downright insane system used there, but at least in Spain this is not a thing; banks do not care whether or not you've been taking credits you don't need to cover for mundane expenses, as if that was any kind of indicator on how likely you are to keep up with a house loan's payments. I would expect (or at least hope) most other countries to have some semblance of sanity in this regard too.

It's hard to portray serial escalation when that's your starting point for power, and moving as quickly as to pretty much teleport is your starting point for speed. Of course, Toriyama never expected it to be popular for so long, and didn't plan further than a few weeks in advance, so...Tails are canonically saiyan's weak points and really easy to cut, though.

Of course there's an answer; if you're a developer you don't want to be liable for copyright infrinction, period. No indie dev, for example, is going to bother using a patented mechanic, any more than they're going to spend any time and money making an unofficial Pokemon game they intend to sell. Even larger developers have much better uses for their time and money than litigating patents. The actual, practical effects of patents are 99%+ preemptive. For every case that you learn of that reached the courts, there's hundreds of instances you will never know about where the devs simply didn't bother taking the risk. Patenting a mechanic is effectively equivalent to killing it for everyone else, and in doing so, throttling the vast majority of its potential to be refined.

All of that is correct, but you're missing the part I replied to, the one that claimed the way that market inefficiency was resolved was by scalpers buying the exact same product and then re-selling at a higher price, thus solving shortage. Obviously this is nonsense; what economic theory would dictate is that either Sony raises PS5's retail price (they won't because they'd rather take the economic hit than the backlash), or other manufacturers provide their own competing products (they won't because the entirety of Sony's ecosystem is propietary). Scalpers raising prices does in no way, shape or form address the shortage, because the official price as dictated by the seller is still what it is, and people still want to buy at that price.Whether a good is elastic or inelastic, the only way a "shortage" is solved by scalpers cornering the market is if you entirely change the definition of "shortage".
Published

(58045605)

Thread I hate scalpers. Scum of the earth.
Nope, we're using the exact same definition (the one you just quoted, in fact). Where we differ is in the definition of "market price". There's three positions here: - Market price is strictly retail price. This is a reasonable position because it's still possible for customers to buy at that price through sufficient effort. - Market price is some mixture of retail price. This becomes very nebulous indeed; what mixture, precisely? By the strict definition of "price of last transaction", the "market price" is highly volatile and bounces wildly between retail price and scalper price. This is a somewhat shaky position but I can at least see an argument for it. Note however that this position does not justify the "scalpers solve shortages" argument. - Market price is strictly the price set by scalpers, simultaneously legitimizing a second-hand market as setting the price for retail, while completely ignoring retail transactions. This is Trigonometrize's stance; the position needed to justify "scalpers solve shortages" argument. It's, of course, self-evidently nonsensical by any rational metric. Spell out these "obvious" reasons, then. An actor can either solves a shortage, or they can't; how necessary the goods are is not relevant to this. If scalpers can "solve" a shortage, they can do so regardless of whether the shortage is of insulin or diamond-studded dog leashes. Yes, I take issue with calling something a "solution" to a shortage when it does not, in fact, solve the shortage in any way. I tend to be weird like that. That would be correct; which is why scalpers, by definition, can't "solve a shortage". I've already said why a price increase on the part of Sony would be counterproductive to their consumer perception (see PS3); but if for whatever reason they did hike the price, it would still be obviously preferable for that extra money to go towards the company that actually provides the service, rather than the individuals making it harder to gain access to that service to begin with. I'm frankly shocked I have to point out something that obvious.

People that can't afford scalper prices are left out. Blaming Sony for wanting their console to have a reasonable price for everyone, rather than the scalpers making sure only affluent people can afford them, and justifying it all with "market forces" as if scalpers had no moral responsibility whatsoever, is a ridiculously laissez-faire capitalistic view of the situation.

Unfortunately people in charge of hiring rarely worry about the other side of the equation, which is keeping people happy. Another common situation is raises only being given when the worker says "I've been offered this much at another company; raise my salary to match or I'm out". Of course, besides underscoring the ignorance of companies about how much their employees' work is worth, this practice encourage the latter to actively and routinely look for work elsewhere if they want to earn more, which often results in finding better jobs and switching anyway even if they may not have been that interested to leave to begin with. This is a pretty fun trope if done in a fresh way; I'm guessing the reason it's not seen that often is that, due to its very nature, a single work can explore and exhaust a lot of potential plot implications, leaving little for each subsequent work. You can't just make a time loop movie because that's just Groundhog Day and GD did about everything you can do in an "everyday scenario"; you need to change a core element to not retread it. The best examples do just that: Russian Doll (two people separately trapped in the loop), Edge of Tomorrow (action sci-fi), etc. There's two very different meanings of "time loop" in fiction: - Works that feature a time loop paradox; a self-perpetuating chain of events that becomes a loop through time travel, thus every event is proximate or distal cause of every other event, including itself. - Works where the main character's consciousness is stuck in a time loop where they re-experience a period of time over and over. There's otherwise little thematic connection between the two meanings, and discussing both in the same thread is only going to result in two groups of people talking past each other. Given that a cursory read of the OP (and its mention of Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow) makes it plenty clear they are referring to the latter, it makes sense to focus on them.

Thread Roguelike - Embrace the dnmRoa
You can actually download and play Loop Hero's alpha version for free on itch.io: I've played a bit of it and it seems interesting. It's much more of a roguelite than it is an "idle game"; sure, the game has your character fight automatically, but so did Half Minute Hero. You get stuff after each (very short) fight that you want to either equip or place in the map right away, to either improve your hero's stats, or spawn more enemies to fight.

Thread Roguelike - Embrace the dnmRoa
The problems with such a distinction is that a) it's quantitative, nor qualitative, and b) as a consequence, it's subjective, not objective. Even if we were to agree on this specific definition, we almost certainly would not on what games fit each category. This makes for a very poor basis to decide whether to use one term or the other on, especially in the context of taxonomizing games. It's fine to disagree with definitions or what a term be applied to (see: Smash as a fighting game, Dark Souls as a JRPG), but at some point we have to at least attempt to define them in a way that it's objectively defined in a way that most people (should they adopt that specific definition) would clearly classify items on; otherwise communication, the whole reason for them existing in the first place, breaks down. A definition that leaves it to personal opinion whether each game is a "like" or "lite", conveys no actual useful information in conversation. Aside from that, the distinction between "roguelike" as a strict genre, and roguelite as a characteristic of a game in potentially any genre, is still necessaty. Using the terms in that way you suggest would necessitate the creation of new terms for these two other meanings (which I'm not necessarily opposed to, if it removes the ambiguity seemingly historically inherent to "roguelite" and "roguelike" :) ).

Thread Roguelike - Embrace the dnmRoa
To expand on the above explanation (and yes, the nomenclature is horrendous, and not widely agreed upon), by the most common definition of these terms, roguelike is a genre (like "fighting game", or "first person shooter"), while roguelite is a characteristic (like "multiplayer", or "turn-based"). For example EtG is a twin-stick shooter (genre) that happens to have a roguelite characteristic, just like it has a multiplayer characteristic. Into the Breach is a tactics game (although I can also see the case for "puzzle game") that also happens to have a roguelite characteristic. Now, based on your likes, I would highly suggest to check: - Hand of Fate 2, because you liked Slay the Spire. An incredible game where the deckbuilding part is actually the overarching structure rather than the run structure; that is, you make a deck before starting each run, with your deck including not only equipment cards but also quests and encounters. Completing these quest cards unlock more cards, e.g. the next step of the quest, for future runs. The combat is actually action-based and somewhat similar to Batman Arkham games. Available on PC and Switch. Faster than Light (FTL), because you liked Into the Breach (same devs, you'll even find interface similarities). A multimillion seller and one of my favorite games ever, roguelite or otherwise; it puts you in command of a spaceship jumping from sector to sector, fighting other ships, and upgrading your ship. The most interesting characteristic is its micromanagement of the crew: you don't control the ship directly; you control your crew and move them around your ship to man stations, put out fires, repair hull breaches, fight off invaders, etc. Available on PC and iPad.

*googles* Wow, the game is mesmerizing to look at. The issue with animations is that they used a mixture of traditional frame-based animations, and paperdoll Flash-like animations, which is what makes it look cheap, but that can be solved easily by making the latter's movement "ratchet-based" instead of completely smooth. Thread Well, I guess I have a cat now...
Congratulations and welcome to the club! Not actually a guarantee of being in a home before; cats automatically use litter boxes when available, even stray cats just introduced to the concept, or nearly newborn cats. They instinctively look for a soft sand or litter surface to dig before doing their stuff because that's what they do in nature to hide the smell from predators. The big marker that he's been, if not in a home, at least around friendly humans, is that he looks for their company instead of fearing them. Cats are socialized with humans up to a few months after being born; if they haven't had contact with humans by then, they will normally avoid them. Of course, he could have lived in a neighbourhood where everyone was friendly to him, so that's not a guarantee either.Call him what you really want to; you won't get many opportunities of having such a perfectly fitting name. :) Would you believe in over 500 cats being adopted, nobody ever named their cat Toothless (on the other hand, I lost count of the Simbas)? I guess it's a bit long and, well, unflattering if you don't know the reference, but you could nickname him Toothy. Then get a white-haired call and call him Sephy, win-win. :)

It just happens that, in this case, the reason for the negative reviews the performance of the product; which makes it, objectively, unarguably and by definition, "review bombing". Thread Is Resetera's search the worst ever or what?
Ah, I see. Didn't see you had filtered by author. To sum it up and split some hairs: 1) The "quick search" (results that appear when simply typing in the bar) uses a completely different algorithm that doesn't respect your preference setting (even though the setting says it does), and is entirely useless. 2) The search itself (clicking "search") works, but when set to order by recent (or default, which is the same) and searching for topics, it will sort them by date of creation rather than last post. 3) NOT searching by thread title will return all posts that contain the words. This means it will not return posts in a topic that has the words in the title, unless the post itself also contains them. 4) This means there's no way to search for "latest updated thread with these words in its title", which would be the bread and butter of what most users search (and Google's algorithm is probably closer to this).

Era's search function is boderline broken, yeah. No clue what exactly is the issue with it but showing dozens of obscure, years-old threads is the default. Even simply ordering the results by recency would be a massive improvement.Type "search" in the search bar and the first hit is a 2018 thread that doesn't even actually have "search" in the title (it has "searching" instead. This very thread doesn't even appear in the immediate results (but it does if you type "era search, so it's already indexed). Type a game's name (e.g. Genshin Impact). You get threads with a few pages from different announcements from last year, when the OT is hundreds of pages long and bumped every hour. And so on and so forth, but surely it's just us.Hey, thank you, this will help a lot! I'm assuming there's no way to make that the default for all users?

Also, I guess being the last person to finishing delicious food (or otherwise doing something that may humorously annoy the other) is common enough we have a whole pletora of these, like "some ill-intentioned person ate / did [whatever]" or "these things just happen, no need to look for someone to blame".

This. Quality, government-sponsored education should be among the foremost priorities of any developed country, right after free medical care. In the case that one lives in a country where this is not a thing (and moving to one where it is isn't a possibility), then it should be the parents' obligation; same as any other primary necessities like food or medical attention, until their children become independent. The notion that anime depicts any kind of realistic, honest or informative approach to sex (teenage or otherwise) is absolutely hilarious. For one, actual sexual activity is pretty much never depicted or even alluded to (outside hentai, where it's obviously just for titilation); it's either guys lusting after girls, or girls put into unlikely exposing situations. For another, women are either virgins with the libido of a dull rock that are only interested in platonic romance, or exaggeratedly horny seductresses defined entirely by that trait (and almost always treated like joke characters and feared / avoided by the main cast). Making this about cartoons vs anime is missing the point. Western cartoons encompass a much smaller age target than anime, so the comparison doesn't make any sense; there's a reason the thread title is "western media vs anime".

I'm actually a game developer currently under a publishing contract (not under Dangen, before you ask), so while my experience isn't exactly comprehensive (this is my first time doing this), I at least have some notions about the power dynamics at play. Publishers are service companies, bound by contracts like literally everyone else; they cannot make you do anything that isn't in your contract. This "power dynamics" reinterpretation of a business interaction is unwarranted unless you're already assuming extreme unprofessionalism, hostility and vindictiveness on the part of Dangen, . I also want to ask what is your experience with publishers that makes you affirm so categorically that such opressive power dynamics are at play, if only to avoid ever using their services!Sure, but it was precisely the one example you used to generalize and invalidate the entire rebuttal, so it's the one that caught my eye. I'm not preventing you from bringing up other examples, and I won't contest them either because, frankly, we don't have enough information about the whole situation. I second that it would be quite fantastic for someone like to conduct a proper investigation on the matter. Sorry for assuming a figure of speech would not be taken literally. Thread Dangen Entertainment Robbing Indie Devs? (Updates Threadmarked)
Disclaimer: This post is entirely about the Kinda Funny videos. I'm in no way defending Dangen from any other accusations.Because lying here would be rather stupid considering Kinda Funny will immediately get word of this via their fans and will immediately rebut it if it's false. More generally, reading through their rebuttal seems entirely pointless if we're going to assume they're lying through their teeth the whole time. I think it makes more sense, in order to get the whole picture, to assume a degree of truthfulness on both parts when accouts contradict each other. This isn't one of these cases (the devs do not contest, that I know, the fact that Dangen was notified late by Kinda Funny) so I don't see the need to believe they're lying. But yeah, the most important part is that shifting the blame to Kinda Funny would be a monumentally stupid move that will blow up in their faces immediately if it's false. This is a good time to point out that the accounts from both parties, for the most part, do not directly contradict each other. I think both of them are telling the truth here, and most inconsistencies seem to come from different perspectives and miscommunication. But the screencapped conversation clearly says "if you can" in the very first sentence?I think we're blowing things up out of proportion here and quickly approaching "bitch eating crackers" halo effect. - Dangen provides a service to developers for a fee. Developers are their clients. The power dynamics here are, I think, being grossly exaggerated. You only need to see how the DE dev talks to them and how they have to take it without retorting. - The video they asked is of them saying "I'm X, I make games because Y. Thanks for playing", with Y being a couple of words. They didn't ask to film Gone with the Wind. And in the same conversation they asked, they told them they could deliver it the next day. While certainly inconvenient, I don't see it as unreasonable. In game dev and advertising, sometimes things like these happen; it's just how it is.Telling Kinda Funny to fuck off with their request would be actively harmful to developers, because it means they get less exposure. This is the entire reason developers can do it "if they can"; if they don't record themselves, they obviously don't get to appear in Kinda Funny's video. Again, unless explicitly noted otherwise, assumption of nefarious retaliation against devs seems kind of unfounded unless you already think Dangen is out to get the devs.

From what I've read so far, it does go point by point about most of the points in the original article, and offers explanations that make quite a lot if sense (and often visual evidence) for many things. As far as rebuttals goes, this seems pretty thorough, I'm not sure what else could they do to defend their case. It certainly has a bit more evidence than "a couple of screenshots from I don't know exactly what". This is a pretty fucked up situation for everyone involved. The truth will, as is usually the case, land somewhere in the middle, but right now Dangen's version seems at least more logically consistent at describing both parties' motives, and exposes a pattern of toxicity and insults from DE's dev not just towards Dangen but other devs. We will probably never know all of the truth, which is unfortunate because it will damage everyone's reputation, regardless of who was actually in the wrong. In the case of Dangen this may well prove fatal; whether that's a good thing or not, of course, depends on what opinion of them one may have already formed. Edit: I didn't remember about the sexual harassment accusations; I assume they aren't addressed in their response? (they aren't in the part I've read so far at least).

Because everyone, to some or another extent, has conflicts with their parents, they will always look at yours through that same lens; that you have your own version of your interactions with them, your parent has another, and the truth is somewhere in the middle. Any outlandish episode is easily dismissed as exaggeration; a lithany of less dramatic but constant abuse reflect worse on your for holding so many grudges after all these years. My relationship with my own parents is awful; or to be more precise, their relationship with literally every other single human being is awful and usually short-lived (they barely stayed together long enough to conceive me; I have no memory of them together), which unfortunately that means they latch on to those people that can't simply walk away from them. I know too well what kind of living hell living with such a person can be; I moved out at 27, and it still felt like fucking forever. The only advice I can give you is to try to move out ASAP, perhaps throw out some feelers around to see if someone, ideally a friend, has a spare room they can rent for cheap. I guarantee it will make your life so much better overnight; although, word of warning, be ready for a lifetime of your mom guilt-tripping you for all she's done for you, and how you're not repaying it enough regardless of what you do.That's something I know my mom would never do, so I guess mine is higher in the narcissistm scale. Like, she has never, ever, acknowledged being wrong in my lifetime, for anything, to anyone, ever. The most she's ever done when she's not confortable with the situation when someone is upset with her is the classical "I'm sorry you took it that way, it wasn't my intention" non-apology, in that hurt tone of voice that implies you're the awful person for thinking there may be any hurtful intent in her clearly hurtful words (and even that is rare; more often she just says she never actually said that, even when it's been barely days and there's multiple witnesses).

Thread Mini maps: rotation-enabled or fixed?
Well, I get lost easily, so in games without a minimap, I just open the large map each ten seconds (instead of each 30 seconds as normal). Horizon is a perfect example. :) The problem with "memorizing the map" is that, by and large, you don't do that in open world games, since the map is too large, not dense enough in landmarks in most cases, and there's rarely enough reasons to repeatedly revisit any part of it outside the main hubs. I really only get to "memorize" maps in games with smaller ones. Dark Souls is probably the largest map I ever memorized, and only possible due to several combination of factors that don't apply to open world games: besides the aforementioned frequent revisiting of places, I think it's just that much easier to remember paths than it is to remember open land. But, yeah, the lack of any in-game map also forces you to create a mental map, which is why I would call that bold (especially at the time) design decision an unambiguously correct one. For one, the moments of opening a shortcut and realizing "oooh, so loops back ", and updating your mental map, are the best thing ever. :)

Thread Mini maps: rotation-enabled or fixed?
I love Dark Souls and Shadow of the Colossus as much as the next guy, but (pretty much like every single other design decision), no-map isn't a silver bullet that works in every single game or genre. I feel your argument is against open world games as a genre, rather than minimaps as a specific feature, which I do empathize with (with a few exceptions, I generally don't care for open world games either), but that's kind of a different (and rather more subjective) discussion.

Thread Should we rethink how we classify JRPGs, VNs, and other "anime-styled" media?
This is a good analogy. You're going to get a lot of people to disagree with you, but I fully agree. If JRPG is to be understood as a genre, it needs to have genre definitions and boundaries. A genre that can be turn-based, strategy-based, action-based, overhead, third person, first person, or anything in between; that's not a genre anymore, it's a literally meaningless label. If an universally recognized term comes up that means "RPG with linear character-based story, party and turn-based, with no movement action", I'll more than happily stop using JRPG altogether. Until then we still need a genre term to encompass games like classic Final Fantasy and Cosmic Star Heroine. And speaking of CSH:I think "horror" here applies as a narrative genre, rather than a game / mechanical genre. You can have a game that's "horror" independently of the actual genre of the game itself; there's horror FPSs (and even within these, you have very different single-player, co-op and versus variants), horror JRPGs, horror adventure games, horror third-person games, horror visual novels, etc. This is however important insight in that the same applies to "anime" as well. The fact that a lot of anime games are JRPGs doesn't prevent pretty much every other genre having been explored under an anime aesthetic / storytelling lens. And notably, multiple narrative genres can be applied at once. Like, for example, Corpse Party is a horror anime game; but again, that doesn't tell you anything about how it plays, so neither is actually informative as a gameplay descriptor.

If the US can't change capitalism, then nobody can, at least not in a way that will meaninfully impact the US. Europe can (and hopefully will) keep implementing progressively more leftist policies, but if the US is not willing to do the same on its own, it simply won't, there's nothing the rest of the world can do about it. I think you have that backwards. The US has been the major driving force behind capitalism for a century (up to and including backing coup after coup to overthrow governments that got too far left for its tastes). It's by a long shot the most powerful and influential contry in the world. If you want to fix capitalism, you have to start with the US; not the opposite. And we thank you for that. Most sensible Spaniards (everyone without either a hard-on for the US, which after Trump are as deranged as their voters, or too far up their own nationalistic pride that they believe Spain can be any sort of powerful actor by itself) look up to France and Germany, and know our future is in Europe as a global power.

This is a more complicated question than it seems, depending on the language. In Spanish there's two equivalent words to "boy" and "girl". You have "niño" and "niña", which has the connotation of a prepubescent child. Then you have "chico" y "chica", which technically address teens and young adults. In informal conversation, however, it's common to refer to each other with the latter instead of "hombre" and "mujer", which feels a lot more formal. It's a generational thing but e.g. my SO (44) refers to her 40-50 year old friends as "chicas".

Right, except for the almost yearly incidence of one or another of the morally upright to a fault heroes being mind-controlled or falling to the dark side. Batman is just genre savvy enough to know comic writers just love pitting heroes against each other. His "superpower" is planning and preparedness; without that, he's a splat in the wall the second any of the other JLA members turn against him. I haven't actually read the storyline, but at a cursory glance, the silliest thing about it all (and the reason it's notable in the first place, versus the frequent and quickly forgotten times other JLA have gone rogue) is Batman being so freaking dumb as to let his plans fall into Ra's hands. Also note most of his plans involved non-lethal means of disabling the JLA members, including going to the lengths of devising a specific form of kryptonite that would disable but not kill Superman.

Of course it does, and it's a great pick!... but this is my pick for favorite ever, yeah. It's not just an unforgettable scene, it's a huge "shit just got real" moment that marks a pivotal change in the game's entire narrative. Until then (a few dozen hours!), and outside a few scenes that are pretty much cryptically unparseable without the benefit of later knowledge, the game seems to be about political strife between warring nations, more or less grounded sci-fi, and relatively realistic mecha. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course! But then along comes Id, the father of all , and single-handedly changes the genre of the game.

Sorry but this is a load of rubbish. In Spain for example she would just have got a contract with a trial period; exactly the same amount of risk for the company in this situation, without making long-time workers completely unprotected against the whims and abuses of companies in pretty much every other situation. At-will employment as a one-size-fits-all solution for very specific situations (that already have very specific solutions) is downright absurd. You're just parroting conservative rethoric. What you're really choosing from is a 55k job in a country that cares for its less fortunate citizens vs 85k in a country that leaves them to die. Taking the 85k jobs means a) you don't give a fuck about those less fortunate than you (not fortunate enough to be making that choice, to begin with), and b) taking a bet that you will never e.g. become ill for an extended period of time. And I would absolutely pick the first every time.I mean, sure, if you have UH and UBI then you can use whatever model of employment you want, because at that point you can't threaten anyone with poverty anymore. But that's as relevant to the advantages of at-will employment as saying that a LED lightbulb isn't much better than a conventional one, once you have cold fusion to power them and nanomachines to repair them when they fail.

One would think this isn't that hard to understand; the article clearly focuses on the solutions that are least the harmful to tenants; but of course, the second Era sees "landlords" in an article's title, it gets bloodshot eyes and starts frothing at the mouth. Scratch a little under the knee-jerk performative leftism and there's none of actual concern for of the involved parties; all the thought and care that people have put into the situation is revealed when they tell landlords to "just sell" all their properties and leave tenants in the wind.

You realize the solution you're proposing to "weather the storm" is than anything the somehow reviled article at the top proposes? Your solution involves the immediate evicting of the tenants!Capitalism's (multiple) broken systems aren't opt-in, that's the whole issue; you need to deal with them whether you want it or not. People e.g. getting a mortgage based on their current job's pay, and then being unable to pay it when they lose it, were also dealing with a "broken capitalistic sytem", yet I don't think you would blast them for their inability of "weathering the storm". The whole thread's outrage is based on the othering of someone who owns more than one home as something inherently immoral, but with little in the way of actual justification outside vague leftist ideals of "owning less is more virtuous". Which is nonsensical when e.g. my SO's lower class, working class, retired parents happen to own two homes through inheritance, but both combined don't cost even a of the houses a lot of people in this forum own.

Thread Options for Struggling Landlords Whose Tenants Can’t Pay the Rent
You don't have to be rich to be a landlord, and I say this as a pretty poor schmuck that owns zero houses (including my own; I'm a tenant). A lot of older people inherit properties from their deceased parents and rent them out to help a bit or pay their own rental or current mortgage while still working themselves. Some even have mortgages on homes because the person they inherited it from didn't pay it off completely before dying (something increasingly common with today's ridiculous 40-year mortgages). After the real estate crashes of the last decade, a lot of people prefer to rent out as a theoretically more future-proofed alternative to selling. Telling people to "just get a job" to offset not getting rent (while they still have to pay for the costs of owning property, repairs, etc.) because other people have lost their jobs due to the job market sucking for everyone is also pretty one sided and contradictory, especially given many of them are 60+ and retired.Pretty much this, but Era is pretty young, ageist, and has little empathy or contact with people outside their age bubble that aren't their own parents.

Thread If you can pick any Square game to get the FFVII Remake treatment
First post magic; it's Xenogears by a land mile. Not just because it's an incredible story with amazing characters, but because it would benefit the most, by far, from a remake, due to both the corners that had to be cut during development, and design decisions that are a product of its era (PSX JRPGs had some of the worst encounter rates and XG was no exception). Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger are pretty much already perfect and would benefit much less, if at all, from a remake. As a bonus, Xenogears would work extremely well as an episodic game, due to the complexity and length of its plot. Dividing it up into 3-4 parts would make it a lot easier to digest.

There's really not much difference between the "I'm forcing you to figure out things" and the "pull yourself from your bootstraps" mentalities. The condescending assumption of intellectual lazyness on the part of anyone that's in a less advantageous position from you; the notion that everyone can pull themselves up to your position with just a bit of work and ingenuity. In short, the belief that everything you have, you obtained solely through your own virtue, and so should others. All of this to convert any way of actually helping others, from a moral obligation, to something harmful you should avoid doing . There's also, of course, the more direct, obvious similarity of trying to teach others valuable life lessons while they're fucking starving.

See, what I was asking about. Point 1 seems, well, very debatable as you point out. Point 2 actually offers some hypothetical value, unlikely as it is. But do you think most people collecting platinum trophies do this out of these two motivations? It really does not seem like the time investment in any way justifies the gains, especially if you're not having fun. It's almost as if achievements are arbitrary and meaningless goals, and completionism for its own sake was illogical at best, and unhealthy at worst. I'm fine with P* leaving a way out for people to scratch that mental itch in their own game without subjecting themselves to torture. I just think the utter meaninglessness of it all once the actual "achieving" part of achievements is removed should perhaps prompt some self-reflecting on completionism and the compulsion to pursue unfun achievements, as was probably P*'s intention.

Thread How many NieR Automata achievements / trophies did you buy?
"Criticising the concept of achievements" is a much broader argument than it seems. On the surface we agree 100% on the core thesis; that feeling compelled to complete all achievements, no matter how unfun it is, is unhealthy. You can then interpret that Taro intended for achievements being buyable in N:A to be his solution for one game (his). However, you can also interpret it as an attempt to make players realize that ticking off achievements for completion's sake is meaningless by making N:A's achievement meaningless (that is: having them doesn't actually you have achieved them). I choose to believe the latter, based on Taro's heavy postmodernist tendencies, love of metacommentary, and especially his frequent commentary on the inherent meaninglessness of videogame accomplishments, most notably by encouraging the player in both Nier games to delete their own savegames at the end. But whether you agree with this or not, the question remains. Regardless of whether obtaining an achievement by "traditional" means is valuable in itself or not, what's the point of an achievement? Not of the option; of the action itself. Why would you bother doing that? How does that change your life in any way at all?

Although the crown for biggest drop in quality is heavly contested even among Gundam shows *coughseedestinycough* The biggest issue is that the first season did something different other than retelling the same Gundam story again, but that something was the transition between a world similar to our own, with nations and international politics and baseline humans, to a much more Gundam-like one, with Earth mostly unified in a single global faction, genetically enhanced humans, etc. It needed to do something very radical in its second season not to retread the same beaten path, and... it didn't.

Which, I mean, , Vita is still my favorite Sony console, but we all know it would be suicide right now. The notion that Sony needs to make it up to Japan somehow for guidelines that are there for the most part to curb the rampant sexualization of female characters that more often than not look like minors is absurd. There's a difference between "taking a country seriously" and making policy decisions to please them specifically, to the detriment of everyone else. You are repeating the same point as if it was a new argument. We get it, it's inconsistent; companies have different policies on different branches all the time, for a variety of reasons. What I'm saying is that you are pointing out this inconsistency, not because you are concerned about sexualization on their other avenues and want Sony to remove it there as well, but because you want it back on PS. The narrative that Sony still only tries to appeal to the young white male demographic is, simply put, not true anymore. Sony has been developing high profile games appealing to all audiences like Dreams or Astrobot, and telling more mature and inclusive stories like TLOU2. The actual problem is that Era itself has a young male core gamer bias that often makes it dismiss and ignore the very games that it claims Sony isn't making. Sure, Sony hasn't yet (and probably never will) reached the peak of family-friendlyness that Nintendo has been for decades, but... who has? I mean, that's a disingenuously cherry picked example if there was one. The changes do not just affect games where the entire point is the fanservice (which are in fact a tiny minority); they also affect games where sexualization was included as a matter of fact (because of course it does) in a game that otherwise can stand perfectly well on its own, which are far more numerous (a whole swath of dungeon crawlers, to begin with). Hell, it's not even just Sony doing this; Square changed several Bravely Default outfits in the west, too. This change unarguably made the game, one that at its core has nothing to do with fanservice, more palatable to people put off by that sexualization. See above.

Sony is just becoming more respectful and inclusive, and the traditional young male audience feels left out: this is neither new nor restricted to Japan.

Logic-based, yes (I mean, obviously; that's how computers work). As easy as the OP, not really; the example is made to be the simplest possible one to illustrate the issue without distraction. But yeah, coding and particularly its keywords like if, else, etc, are made to be as close as possible to (English) language as possible. Some languages are even closer; for example Pascal (if I remember correctly; I haven't used it since college, 25+ years ago) has "then" after the condition in the "if", and also BEGIN and END instead of open and close brackets. If you had fun parsing through this, why don't you try learning to code? It really fun... well, to the sample population composed of me, at the very least. :D Let me know if you're interested and I can point you in the direction of some resources. Uh... what? The ? : operator is not "less readable", or even particularly esoteric at all.Nah. There's two types of people that you need to impress when applying for a the job: - The higher ups that don't know shit about coding. - The programmers that have probably endured enough of this "clever" (translation: fucking obnoxiously unreadable) coding to last a lifetime. You can't impress the former with clever coding tricks, because they don't understand it. The latter will discard your application the instant they imagine themselves having to parse through code like that on a daily basis. The code you posted would actually show a warning (if not a compile error, depending on your settings) due to the dead code at the end. The last return at the end is not just redundant, it's unreachable.

First of all, when you're adding (dragging and dropping) animations directly to a gameObject, it's probably important to know Unity is doing a lot of work for you, that you should be aware of in case you need to mess with it (and you will). In particular it is: 1) Creating an AnimatorController containing all of your animations (this will be a .controller file somewhere in your project), 2) Adding an Animator component to your gameObject, and 3) Setting the AnimatorController as the controller of the Animator. I personally prefer to do all these steps on my own so that I can decide what folder is the AnimatorController created in, how it's named, etc. The important thing here is to be aware of what's being created and linked behind the curtains. Second of all, is your sword animated separately from your character? As in, the sword is a different sprite with its own spritesheet? If that's the case, then you need to do something like the second approach I mentioned above. This is important because what you need to do is different depending on that. a) If player and sword are one single sprite, then you don't need to add any animations to the sword. You will have only one animation, for the player, that controls everything else including the sword's hitbox. b) If your player and sword are different sprites, then you indeed need to add an animator for each of them, and each animator needs to have separate animations controlling the player and sword's sprites, hitboxes, etc. There's no way (that I know of) to automatically make the sword's animation trigger when the corresponding player's animation is played: you will have to manually trigger both at once. In turn, to do this, you will need a reference to both animators, which you can do by either using GetComponentsInChildren from the player (and iterating over all the animators to trigger the animation on each), or by manually adding a field to the player that contains the sword's animator (and linking it by dragging the sword to that field in the editor).

I'm going to tell you what I should have done, instead of what I actually did (because I didn't know better at the time). It's for top-down 2D games but most of it applies to any 2D game at all. The most important thing is how you use transitions (a massive source of headache for me) and instead play each animation state as you want: As for your specific questions: 1) There's a couple of ways to know when an animation ends: - One is simply to ask the animation how long it is in seconds, multiply it by the speed you're playing it (normally 1x), and then wait that amount of time. - Another is to create a script that inherits from StateMachineBehaviour, add that to the animation state itself (yes, you can do this), and override the OnStateExit function. 2) This depends on whether the sword is a separate object you instantiate (e.g. your character can equip different weapons, but uses the same "swing" animation for all of them, then each weapon animates itself in sync), or if the sword is "part" of the character's animation. I have done both in my game so I can further explain how to do each.

Thread Hobby and Indie Game Dev |OT 2020| Discussion, Help and Show-off
Sure! For the first (simpler) approach: - If you don't have it like this already, you should have a gameObject for your character, then another childed object (e.g. right click on the character -> "create empty") that contains the sword's collider. Name this sub-object e.g. "Sword" or "Sword Collider". The name is important for reasons mentioned below, so be sure to pick a consistent, descriptive name. - You will only have an animator on the root (the character), not on the sword. This animator controls your character's collider (e.g. if your character steps forward), and the sword's collider (whether it's active or not, and the size of it, if e.g. the swing has different frames with different hitboxes each). - When you're recording animation changes on the base object (through the little red circle "record" button), Unity lets you click its sub-objects without deselecting the parent. Then you can just change the sub-object values, including their collider's position and size; these changes will be recorded in the animation of the parent object. - An important thing to note here is that Unity records these changes referring to the of the sub-object. If you change the name of the sub-object, the animation will break (the values will show in yellow, saying that no such sub-object exists). This also happens if you change the type of collider (e.g. from circle to box). The second approach is considerably more complicated, and there's probably many ways to do it. What I have is a character with an animation that has them swinging an invisible weapon, and a weapon with a swing animation. Each has its own animator, and you play both animations at the same time. In my case, for maximum flexibility (allowing any character to use any weapon), I do several things: - On the character I animate a "point" that marks the character's hand position (simply an empty sub-object). - I child the weapon to the aforementioned "hand" point (the weapon's center point is its the grip / handle). - I speed up or slow down the animation speed of the character's animator to make sure the total play time of the swing animation matches the weapon's. This allows me to have weapons that swing faster or slower.

1) It's a solid 7 or 8/10 for me. Probably his worst movie I've watched, but I liked all of them so this wasn't too far down from his average. It's, well, a Nolan movie; you know what to expect. 2) It's actually the music that's OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD. I watched it with subs so the issue for me was more choosing between changing the volume every other minute, settling for deafening music (which is mostly overdramatic fog horns to boot; don't get the praise at all), or setting for whispering dialogue. This has actually been an issue with a lot of his other movies, he just seems to have gone full self-indulgent with it here.

This is pretty much C# standard (perhaps with the exception of having else in their own line, not sure what's C#'s standard on that). I went from C++ to Java to C# over the years, so I have picked up a mixture of what I think looks best and cleanest, which mostly means Java standards... even when I write C#. :)

Sure, but the problem is precisely when you see a return statement. The point of "single entry, single exit" is to make the whole control flow of a method and all of its possible branches immediately obvious at a glance. You only need to look at the brackets / indentation to know where the control can possibly flow into. Arbitrary exit points force you to scan each prior line for return statements before you can make even basic claims like "this line will always execute". I mean, rivers of ink have been written about this very topic; it's probably pointless of us to retread this years-old discussion. I too was skeptical of this principle when a co-worker first adviced it to me years ago, but I gave it a try and it was a game changer. Sure, but the OP didn't specify this was functional programming. The thinking is clear, as long as you understand that t's a give and take. For me, control flow is far more important to perceive at a glance than the value of any one specific variable. And if at any point it's the value that is critical, having one exit point makes it that much easier to debug the return value, by plopping one single log line, or a single breakpoint, right before the final return. In the end, like so many goddamn things in programming, everyone is bound to have different priorities and very strong opinions about it. All I can offer is my own experience, which is that I've been coding using multiple returns for over ten years, then using single returns for almost ten more years, and I can't go back to the former. I suggest giving it at least a try before dismissing it.

The first one is especially bad, but both incur in arguably bad practices. If at all possible, you shouldn't use return except as the very last line in a function. The reason for this is that return, like break or goto, bypasses normal execution flow and makes code paths harder to follow. I would use:Or if the language doesn't support the ? : operator:By the way, in the second example, leaving ret uninitialized helps catch potential situations where you don't set a correct value to it, since modern IDEs will display an error or warning that you're returning a potentially uninitialized value. E.g. this will display an error / warning:Of course, if your IDE doesn't warn about uninitialized values, then the safest option is to initialize it to a valid default value at the beginning.Hahah, beaten by a minute. But yeah, exactly this.

Even leaving aside the "it was bad 20 years ago so no attempt should be made to make it better now" argument, this clearly mimics the SNES / X1-3 aesthetic, which had very little dialogue; but even X4-6 didn't have nearly this much dialogue. X in particular reads like a braindead, lifeless automaton. On the other hand, it called "X Corrupted" so perhaps this isn't representative of the full game's story and writing. I'm just disappointed because I was intrigued by the political implications of the prisoner in the ship mentioning corrution in Reploid's judiciary system, and a bit more behind Mavericks than "bots gone rogue", but the rest of the dialogue didn't inspire much confidence that this would be explored.

If you replace "gyro" with "steering wheel", does it still seem like a contradiction? "A steering wheel brings more to the table than analog sticks [for racing games], even if it's not for everyone, and not every game needs it"? I guess the missing context when making the comparison is that the OP is talking about competitive shooters, which is intuitively evident but not explicit.

This was going to be my contribution to the thread, yeah. Literally every single damaging "black woman" stereotype rolled into one.I was pretty disappointed in Genshin Impact because of how pretty much my entire party at some point was blonde young women. It turns out I just had my rolls line up like that, but yeah, the majority of the current cast is still white women. With regards to the character you mention above, she's a rocker girl (with an electric guitar and everything) from the game's equivalent of China. The current regions in the game are based on Germanic Europe and China; two of the upcoming regions, Sumeru and Natlan, are based respectively on India and pre-Columbian America, so these will probably be the real test of how they treat dark-skinned people. Unfortunately, the next region to be implemented is Inazuma, the Japan equivalent, so that'll take a while.

Thread Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy VII; Which was more influential?
Cherry picked example aside, comparing SNES RPGs sales to other SNES game sales is entirely missing the point, which is that FFVII popularized the JRPG genre the gamer crowd (which was the only market for SNES games to begin with). Being the biggest goldfish in the bowl (sorry, biggest) doesn't make you the shark FFVII was. More importantly, games like FFVII cannot continue to be made without the kind of market FFVII itself brought to the table. If FFVII had either never been made or been a flop, the gaming landscape would look very differently today. is influence in its purest form.

Thread Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy VII; Which was more influential?
The answer to that depends on whether you think influencing millions of people is more important than influencing hundreds of developers, which is a fair question, but for me, it definitely is. The industry as we know today would not exist without breaking the wall between dedicated gamers and mainstream audience that the PSX era brought, and FFVII was a huge part of that, if not the very core of it. "Influence" is a lot more than just "game X lifted feature Y from game Z". "Influence" can also be "game X would not even exist without the potential audience that game Y single-handedly created". "Already successful" is extremely reductive here. The extent to which games like FFVI or CT were "successful" simply had no comparison to the mindshare that FFVII got. I also think that, revolutionary as OoT was, it's getting exaggerated here. Going by some posts here, one would think it was the first third person adventure game.

I have a SNES (bought on launch day!); I just also happen to have a memory. The second I saw FFVII ads on TV , where games just didn't get ads, and the moment I heard two strangers in the subway talking about FFVII, was when I knew something had changed deeply and forever. Videogames in general, let alone JRPGs, were just not a thing the general non-kid non-nerd public played until the PSX and FFVII respectively. Any attempt to say otherwise is historic revisionism.

I actually liked that the antagonist was pretty much in the right; it makes for a more interesting dynamic than the black and white of other shows. Unfortunately a lot of it seems to have been unintentional, and the way they resolved that conflict ("oh, he duped us, he's actually an evil bender, never mind then") was extremelly disappointing and very antithetical to what seemed to be an earnest attempt to introduce moral ambiguety. But that was actually one of the best parts! Japan progressed in much the same way in the same time or even less, it's not unrealistic even leaving aside that bending itself would be a major boost to technological advancement, especially after metal bending is discovered. It was so unique and refreshing to see a show set in a fantasy world beyond perpetual middle ages; if anything, what we should rally against is the infinitude of works set in worlds where people have been living in castles and fighting with swords and bows for of years.

The point is for those he criticises to listen to . Corporate executives overworking and abusing employees, pushing lootboxes into children, and exploting BLM imagery to elicit fear aren't going to listen to voices telling them to perhaps not do that, no matter how friendly and kind the tone. The point is to make the general public aware of what these executives are doing, so that they may act accordingly. And before you point out that the general public is mostly only concerned with their games and gives no shits about any part of the sausage making or political messaging, that's an oversimplification. The general public is not an unchangeable monolith, it's composed of individuals, and even individuals don't exist in a binary "cares / does not care" state; they can be brought to care more and more, eventually changing their purchasing habits over time. That is exactly what happened to me, and I would guess a lot of people in this forum. How the hell are people supposed to make informed, ethical purchasing decisions, even if they care, without people like Jim and Jason exposing these practices? This "preaching to the choir" narrative assumes the existence of unchangeable sets of people (evil executives, alt-right douches, uncaring gamers, woke gamers, etc.) where no one individual is brought closer to a boundary by rethoric, let alone cross it. Which is demonstrably false, if only because GamerGate and the alt-right have been very effective in pushing people in the exact opposite direction for a while. Without people like Jim to push in the other direction, we're well and truly fucked.

Don't go around spreading misinformation, that's all I'm saying. The irony of saying "there was nothing there" with regards to Kanji and his bait and switch, right after pushing "Yosuke was definitely gay but they changed it" as fact, is so deafening I can feel my eardrums bleeding. Unlike you, I'm not interpreting anything. Kanji thinks he may be gay. His friends think he may be gay. That's not fan theory, that's literally the game's very own dialogue. That he ends up not being gay is a fact, but so is that textually express the belief, at multiple points in the game, that he's gay.

It is completely a stretch given Yosuke's characterization. It would literally make more sense for other male character in P3, P4 or P5. Which, I mean: you do you, that's what headcanon is for; but stating as that he was "meant to be gay but they wrote it out at the last time" wrote a check that no piece of evidence so far could cashed a single penny of.

Thread Is Morgana too much of a dick to Ryuji in Persona 5?
Kanji is in love with a person that presents as male, his dungeon is a sauna, his shadow is a collection of every gay trope in the world. It's about as subtle as you would expect a JRPG from a decade ago. In the end, he's indeed canonically not gay, but you can't blame people for feeling betrayed at the backpedal and seeing it as cowardice for not wanting to portrait a main character as gay (in my headcanon he'll always be bi). Regarding the nosebleed, watch the scene again. The girls' assume it's on their behalf, but he's actually been staring , and acts spaced out when talked to: Yosuke, on the other hand, is obsessed with hitting on girls, seeing them in yukatas, bikinis or naked. If the above nosebleed scene makes Kanji's orientation "obvious", then ignoring literally every single bit of Yosuke's characterization and continuous sexual harassment is just cherrypicking evidence. The "homophobe = closeted gay" and "closeted gay = overcompensating sexual harasser" tropes are harmful enough on their own; I don't think they need to be invoked into a game already brimming with homophobia in order to... what, exactly? Downplay Yosuke's homophobia? It all seems to me like an attempt to paint P4's writers in some positive light by constructing a fantasy that they somehow wanted to make a poignant, American Beauty-like statement, when every single piece of evidence points to them being just flat out homophobes.

Thank you for the kind words. But yeah, this lack of empathy is a pretty ugly common thread I've been picking up through all the multiple discussions about lootboxes on Era, and I wanted to at least get that off my chest. To be frank, I don't think it ended up being all that concise (anything over five lines is usually skipped), but at least I said my piece. I mentioned this before (on the subject of capital punishment, no less), but Era in general is somewhat weird in that it prides itself in adhering pretty strictly to progressive tenets as a fundamental part of its identity, but then, individual users rarely show or practice the empathy which should be the very core of leftist ideology. The very second a specific topic falls slightly outside the left-right political axis (and, hell, even when it ; lootboxes are still very much a "capitalism vs consumer protection" topic), empathy seems to become completely optional.

Pretty off topic, but as a kid, I got an assigned amount of money each week that I could save or spend in whatever I wanted (I mean, within reason, obviously; toys, games, etc.). My mom started with about 60 cents a week and by the time I was in college she gave me around $7 a week (you'd have to adjust that for inflation of course, so it would be like twice that by now). Other than that I only got stuff on my birthday and Christmas, and I normally didn't choose these. Each time I wanted a new SNES game, I had to save for two months. I personally think that's a fantastic way to encourage being financially savvy from as early in life as possible, and all parents should do that. That is mathematically correct, but "most kids aren't stealing" is quite the low bar and certainly not one I would be particularly congratulatory about.

Apologies in advance for what it's certainly going to seem like an unwarranted picking apart of your post; I'm not aiming the following specifically at you, but at the sentiment you express, one perpetually echoed over and over in lootbox threads, and in my opinion, one of the biggest hurdles in the discussion. You see, "I don't understand people that fall for this" is really shorthand for a variety of different but related sentiments: - "I can't empathize with (put myself in the place of) these people." - "I don't much to empathize with these people." - "These people have mental issues that make them different from myself." - "These people behave irrationally, and therefore deserve what happens to them." - "I don't care for learning about the multiple psychological traps that these games exploit (because I will never be in a position where that matters specifically to me)." This separation of "us" from "them", and the implication that they are fundamentally alien, irrational agents (as opposed to perfectly normal people that have fallen into an addiction), leads to a very convenient compartimentalization that allows us not to care about what happens to them in the least. In a fundamentally visceral way, I can't understand why people get into smoking, knowing as they do what it does to you. But on a rational level I can understand that people fall into addictions for all sorts of environment factors like social pressure or emotional vulnerability; and having understood that, I can at least empathize with them and wish to help them instead of blaming them.

This cognitive dissonance has felt super weird to me as far back as the original Attack of the Clones. It manages to stand out in a sea of awful things to criticise about the prequel trilogy. I love how it contrasts with shining a light on how outright monstruous it is to create sentient life for the explicit purpose of forcefully conscipting them as cannon fodder: Then again, MTMTE is one long deconstruction of what four millions of war does to a species as a whole and to its long-lived individual's psyches, so that's par for the course.

Sorry, I misinterpreted your post as equating "lazy dev" rethoric with criticism of a game. I still disagree with the statement that criticising a game is implicitly criticising the devs, except for very specific cases like indie games or if by "dev" you mean the director (and then again it's a very indirect criticism given that there's often many unseen factors). Allow me to express doubt on both of the latter when you literally started the conversation here with "well, what should we call devs, if not lazy?".Well, "better" sure is doing some heavy lifting here. You seemed to have pretty clear ideas on how to "motivate" developers that we're still waiting for. And not to be fastidious here, but I also take issue at the inclusion of fans in "how we can make better games". In a world of entitled fandoms, I had never heard of even Star Wars fans saying "how we can make better Star Wars movies".Head-shaking indeed. Who could have foreseen the controversy in asking what are the mod-sanctioned disparaging terms that can be hurled at a collective, let alone that it would ruffle feathers in that very collective. The world is such a crazy place!

Consider me thoroughly motivated; you may now pat yourself in the back for providing this crucial piece of insight I was missing until now.The answer is obviously more complex than that, but "follow the money" is a pretty good start. Don't shit on Johnny Programmer or Jane Artist that work 12 hours at their desk; shit on Bobby Producer that decided they can make a game with half the reasonable amount of workers because devs will work themselves to death anyway, gamers will buy it anyway, and he can pocket the difference. While you're there, perhaps blame Timmy Gamer for buying the same broken games year after year.

This is pure mental gymnastics. When you're criticising a game, you're criticising a game. When you're criticising a developer, you're criticising a developer. I'm not criticising a developer for saying X or Y about game Z is poor, and I'm not criticising a game when I say developer W is lazy. BotW was not wished into existence by gamers calling Aonuma lazy or incompetent.

The article is indeed accurate on its description of the movie, and yet:At no point does the film imply, let alone "in no uncertain terms", that Deckard is a hero for killing beings almost mentally indistinguishable from human beings and whose entire sin is . Hell, calls into attention killing a replicant is not called execution; it's called "retirement". What, you think the movie calls attention to the corporatespeak euphemism, but is otherwise clueless as to who holds what moral ground and rooting for Deckard? Do you really think Zhora's death is meant to make you go "Yeah, one down! Go Deckard!". I guess if you watched it as a kid (which, well, you probably shouldn't), you would see the cop as the hero, and the scary super-strong replicants as the villains (especially coming from Terminator), but there's really no excuse for an adult having this view of the movie. Fully agreed. As to why Era seems to be so divided about this when it's otherwise pretty consistently leftist... I don't think it's that much of a mystery. Empathy and rationality are exercised far less often than the average Era poster would like to think; it's easy to be a leftist when the allies are the disenfranchised, and the enemy are greedy corporations. It's a lot harder to empathize with rapists and murderers, and to tell victims and their families "your feelings that this person should be dead are not enough". But the thing is... is it truly empathy, if it's effortless? Is it really testing your empathy in any way to post in a message board in support of minorities versus bigots? What's the effort you're making here? How progressive and commited to empathy Era members truly are, when Cyberpunk 2077 is still massively popular and played despite its transphobic issues, and when next-gen consoles are still bought day one, even knowing they're manufactured through slave labor?

You can simply delete the library and obj folders whenever you change versions; Unity will recreate them (obviously do this with Unity closed, but since you have to close one Unity version and open the other, you can do that in between). If you find yourself changing from main to the branch so often that it's much of a hassle, you can of course copy the project folder / clone the project, but always with an actual branch backing the changes in the "upgraded" version. You never know how long it will take you to find and fix all the broken stuff when changing versions, and you don't want to have a nagging pressure in the back of your mind to commit these changes to the main branch because they're not comitted anywhere else.

Simply create a branch, switch to it, and upgrade versions there; you can then switch back and forth as needed, whenever you want to work on the main branch, or back on upgrading the project to the next version. Then when / if you decide to upgrade, just merge the branch to your main branch. Or if you decide you don't want, delete the branch. I've had nightmarish version upgrades that broke several things and took me several days to get back running. No way I'm going to work for that long on anything without version control. :P

Thread Japan "Twitter Killer" sentenced to death
Thank you. I've been particularly thinking about this since the thread about the Trump admin speedrunning executions before his term is over. A lot of people were obviously shocked at the execution of Brandon Bernard a black man that had killed no one, but set fire (purportedly under threat) to a man and woman murdered by his partners in crime; someone who had since (20+ years!) remade his life in prison and become a model inmate and a completely different person. However, many others were entirely on board with the execution of Lisa Montgomery, a woman who (spoilering because horrific) . And, I mean, "fuck this monster" would probably be the normal gut reaction of any normal human being, but then you read the less publicised part of how she had in turn been physically and sexually assaulted her whole life (raped and beaten by her stepfather as a kid; threatened with a gun at 14 by her mother when she found out; beaten by both of her husbants), resulting in permanent brain damage, psychosis, bipolar disorder and PSTD, and, well... it feels like it's victims all the way down; that society keeps failing people over and over. That labelling them "subhuman monsters" and killing them is just a convenient way to sweep them under the rug, so as to avoid any collective responsibility.

Thread Japan "Twitter Killer" sentenced to death
That's not a contradiction, it's being human. That's why a proper justice system actively prevents victims or their families from dictating the punishment. "What is fair" and "what I want" don't need to be the same, and it's only trying to convince yourself that they be the same that causes cognitive dissonance. That's your mistake; see above. The problem here is that you're exercising empathy, and you're doing so because it's much easier to put yourself in the position of the victims than the murderer or his family. It being the easiest and most confortable mindset to take doesn't mean it's the right one. Death penalty arguments always devolve into "empathize with the victim or their family", as if that was hard to do at all, and death penalty detractors were unfeeling monsters incapable of doing that. It's empathizing with the killer and their family that's exponentially harder. If we can't do both, then that's fine; but then, we should do .

Thread My GF cats are destroying our apartment and IDK what to about it,
All of these are good tips, but, , you don't just need to move them to the scratching post, you need to make them scratch it. To do this you have to gently grab their paws, press lightly to make the claws pop out, and make a scratching motion on the surface. You also need that to trim your cat's claws, which is also a good way to prevent most of the damage to furniture, so this video can serve as a tutorial for both: Further, get them a proper, tall, 2m+ cat tree. Cats like to be in high places so a nice scratching post that is high above the ground will be more attractive to them, plus since they have to actually use their claws to climb they notice they're good places to do so. Scratching is also a way to scent mark a place as "theirs" and "safe", and again they're more likely to stay in high places if they're available. You can get fantastic cat trees for around $70 nowadays. Also consider asking for advice in our official cat thread, it will probably get more visibility for the regulars.

I didn't know there was any doubt he's well written (besides the fact that nobody is well written or even in the original translation). The duality between Sephiroth and Jenova, how much separation there is between them, how much each is in control, and even whether Jenova is sentient, is a pretty interesting thought experiment on free will and other behavioural concepts, certainly far above any of its contemporary RPGs. I mean, you can obviously reduce any villain to sentences like these and make them sound silly, whether they're FFIV's space invader, FFV's literal tree, FFVI's clown, etc.

Thread Sephiroth was actually a really well written villain in his original game (FF7 Spoilers)
Exactly this, and again, this part specifically is what I find so fascinating: Did Sephiroth come to accept his fundamental inhumanity; his role as the inheritor of Jenova and killer of worlds, forcing the rest of Jenova to submit to his will? Did Jenova overwrite Sephiroth's mind with her own, wearing his personality like a mask? Is the truth somewhere in between? Is the very thinking of them as separate entities a mistake at that point? And so on. Jenova is clearly inspired in both biology and aesthetics on John Carpenter's The Thing, and one thing I always found fascinating about that movie is how each separate part of the thing seemed to act with different levels of sapience depending on its size, how it was severed, or how it came to be. Some part could be all but animalistic and act against its own interests when hurt (most obviously the blood test, but also at other times), yet it could mimic multiple human intelligences and personal behaviours perfectly, and it's implied it's intelligent enough to have constructed its very advanced ship. As far as I can remember, it's never quite explained if splitting the thing generated new individuals with independent intelligence, thought (and potentially, goals), or if it was a whole that communicated in some unspecificed way but some of its parts became uncontrollable on their own. In that sense, I love FFVII's take and expansion on a very similar entity.
