See, that’s *less* than 1/10th of the game. Talking about your first boss experience: The heavy boots can avoid you getting sucked into the mouth, the fire spell can be used to hit tentacles from far away, the shield can be used to block dropping rocks and the boss is dead really quickly.

The boss fights are easier. Think of Zelda-like Puzzle Boss Fights that require a certrain trick to solve except very early boss fights when you don’t have specific abilities or forms yet.

Ori 2 is a great game and the experience is indeed very different compared to the Monster World games which are no precision platformers but Action Adventures in the vein of Zelda/Metroid/Castlevania. You should try Celeste, that gets closer to the Ori 2 experience.

You can always teleport back and collect some money or/and missed secrets to upgrade your character. Remember to get the ice armor which halves fire damage.

We didn't ignore the PC , we just didn't have enough resources to launch on 4 platforms at the same time. Xbox was included because when we submitted the project to Microsoft many years ago we agreed to same-day launch with other consoles. Microsoft did a great job at supporting our marketing efforts and they let us show the game on MS trade show booths. Once we launched the game around Christmas time, we started working on the PC port and it's not just a simple port. We have unlocked framerate and ultrawide monitor support. I don't know many 2D Games with this. See - we aimed to get the best version out for each platform. That goes from PC at 240fps and higher to Switch with 60fps docked/handheld mode at max resolution.

I would agree to call it a mix of Zelda and Metroidvania, going further than Shantae games. Zelda, because of the typical Zelda-like puzzles for traversal and during Bossfights. Comparing it with Shantae: In Shantae, the islands or stages aren't interconnected whereas Monster Boy has a completely interconnected world design and map. Just like classic Metroid and games like Castlevania Symphony of the Night. As for the gameplay related patches: We made very small changes to not change the overall intention of the levels. It's basically 2 information markers on the map and a little more HP reload on small save spots starting in the volcano. We also made very little changes to a secret and a set of equipment..

Yes we patched it and I'm back once again, can't resist to check out Monster Boy threads! ;) As for the composers dream team: Many many tracks are original compositions and not just re-arranges. Of over 60 tracks, around 30 are re-arranges.

Thread I hope we're gonna get a Monster Boy sequel
Hi Everyone, happy to hear most of you are enjoying Monster Boy - thank you for sharing your positive experience and thoughts! As the question came up, I want to clarify the truth about profit. Long story short: It took quite a while to become profitable, but it is ^_^ Some more info: The main reason why it took rather long to become profitable is that the game ended up way more expensive than initially planned. Over 2 million dollars! Since we didn't know if we'd ever get to work on such a beloved series again, we gave it all and tuned it as much as we could. We wanted to provide a meaty experience, worthy to be named in the history of Wonder Boy games and a game that would keep fans busy for quite some time - also in case it's the final game in the series. We are fans of the series so in a way the provided budget wasn't a sane business decision but coming from our hearts as gamers. Sidenote: We also kept a door open to continue it, in case we'd be able to work on the license again (see 100% completion screen). Right now we work on a different game though. It's uncertain if there'll ever be a Monster Boy 2 but it's possible! While I'm mostly very happy about the majority of feedback on the game, I'm also a bit frustrated with some negative comments. We added so much variety to the game, spent 5 years to tune it and offer more than just a hallway-metroidvania game and yet some people stop playing way too early, giving up frustrated because it's no simple rush through the game. It would've been so much simpler to make standard hallway metroidvania but we went the extra mile to go a different route. Please take your time to explore the game properly. Having said that, most players have enjoyed it a lot and I think Platinum completion percentage of player-base is around 20% which is quite high for a game nowadays. Last but not least, thank you all for your support and please keep recommending the game in case you enjoyed it. Wishing you all a Happy New Year and decade!

Thread I hope we're gonna get a Monster Boy sequel
Thank you very much for your support! It's thanks to you and other precious active fans and supporters, that the game could become profitable and be a success. The word of mouth remains strong with the game and I think Monster Boy is a very unique exxperience in the sea of Metroidvania games. Yes, the price war is a problem today. Many games get very cheap or even free rather quickly so the price of $39.99 doesn't help. Given the amount of content and variety, it was impossible to sell at lower initial price. Monster Boy is 4 times as long as Dragon's Trap for example. We've seen impressive spikes in sales at 50% discount ($19.99) and we're aware that this cheaper price is still $5 more than Hollow Knight, triple the price when Hollow Knight is on sale. Another problem is coming up recently: the eShop gets spammed with 1-49cent shovelware sales and I don't like this development. It's impossible to get proper visibility with all those chart list exploit sale strategies. Of course we can't blame them, Nintendo should never allow games for 1 cent to begin with.

That's right, we first made the patch for consoles and took the codebase for PC. It's not a simple task - we unlocked the Framerate and added Ultrawide resolution support for the PC Edition (and more). It's not like we've been sitting on our hands all the time. :D We also need to navigate around the Summer Sales.

Hi Fredde! The first thought when seeing these animated gifs aligned is, man this game is so beautiful! :) I still love the look of it even after so many years on the project. I’ll respond to a couple of them (I’m at a mobile phone right now so my typing isn’t the best) The solution for the spike ball in haunted house is different. When you roll the ball you‘ll notice that it’s very heavy but it gets momentum the longer you roll it. The table need to be placed in a way that they don’t get in the way of the movement. In your sample you misjudge your own setup as ramp but it isn’t. The frog diving: Initially we had the sprite unable to rotate, so you could only attack left or right with your sword while swimming upwards / downwards. This looked more polished but during our gameplay tests we noticed that it plays better when the controls are more direct and when it’s possible to diagonally move the sprite and diagonally attack. Also, the sprite reacts directly to the controls. So while the game tries to find the best alignment of the 2D sprite you can force some strange looking results by randomly giving opposite control input. It’s not a 3D game so there are limitations on making the sprite look realistic all the time and that’s why other games don’t do it and reduce control options. We went for the gameplay. Having in mind that freedom of control/transformations etc, you can sometimes force yourself in a wall collision state that i think is very well handled by the code in most places. It takes an insane amount of coding skill to make the game and the huge amount of mechanics with different characters work like it does. I don’t see anything game ruining here. The block/collision on the frozen dragon snake in the volcano reminds me of Zelda Breath of the Wild where your dash adds up to the physical force while it’s stuck. As soon as it got unfrozen it smashed against the wall beautifully :) I think the game handles it nicely, no crash and it works in the end with a nice powerful and surprising fun moment. The game just allows so many things that it’s hard to predict all player actions. Pirate ship shaking left/right plus slipping boxes: There’s a mechanic in the game that prevents you from slipping easily from the box on spikes, that (invisible) helping mechanic overrides the physics (like some other things) but we had to do them to avoid unwanted deaths. If you’d put real physics on all things the game wouldn’t be very fun to play - Physics can be very unforgiving. So because of our ‚hack‘ it can cause some unwanted effects and maybe we can improve it in future updates. That’s all for now. Enjoy the week-end ^_^

Thank you & I agree to this 100% - even though I’m the producer I’m also a longtime Metroidvania player and think that these areas are a peak in the genre overall. Often in games I feel like the potential of my character and items never comes to full use but here it really demands full attention and utilization in a very different way. It forces you to really think different than in other games and all character transformations come to good use. As for the Haunted House: It was a bit overwhelming in prior versions of the game but we added a couple hints and 3 map targets in 1.0.4 which helped a lot of players. We didn’t have a perfect 1.0 Version but we always listen to player feedback - sometimes very small changes can have big effect and I think the game has become even better over time. It has our full support in the longterm too.

I think you’ll love Monster Boy because - just like Ori, it goes the extra mile to present very different environments and lots of gameplay variety. You have auto-map available from start and you can use all abilities/unlocked forms anytime once you got them (no need to decide on 2), backtracking is minimal.

I remember your post from January - I think it was about the quick respawning (perhaps even early in the game in pig form?). We updated the early section in 1.0.4 and it’ll be easier to find the first life-heart so maybe you want to give it a go once again ;) That particular early section with a very fast respawning cloud was indeed a bit frustrating for some players because the game didn’t offer much defense options here (except the green potion against status changes).

First of all, I can take any criticism without hard feelings so It’s no problem. I understand that emotions can take over quickly and therefore the wording isn’t necessarily ‘classy’ in your post. However, your post clearly shows that you think in Hollow Knight/Dead Cells combat and progress logic, which doesn’t work here because it’s a different game with a different strategy for success. It’s an explorative game through and through that rewards thorough observation, use of elements, equipment/form choice and smart combination of *all* abilities. You could reflect the scythes for example with a shield, you can upgrade the fire sword to shoot fireballs early in the game, there’s an ice armor to reduce fire damage. There’s long range and short range weapons. the heavy boots prevent you from getting blown away by wind, you’d be surprised how many places the game has where you can make good use of each equipment. A bracelet can give back health when you counter strike an enemy immediately, another item nullifies negative effects. Not even mentioning set bonus which is very rewarding. You say it’s obtuse to grow a fire enemy bigger when attacking with fire. Well, fire on fire can have that effect and the game shows it to you in 2 volcano sections where that enemy jumps down a ramp and gets touched by dropping fire with resize effect, or the blob in the sewers that grows when merging with another one. This specific puzzle is still optional though. By observing the game and enemies careful you can learn a lot. You criticize that the light beam in the haunted mansion stretches through multiple rooms but that’s very logical as the windows through which the light ray goes are visible in both rooms and visually connect them with a very visible hint. The 4th wall puzzle solution is hinted very specifically in text form. I’m surprised that it’s taken as a negative that you can warp back to town and refill energy, I don’t know many games that do it so gracefully. You can warp back to the exact spot in the volcano where you opened the portal. The mobile portal stays open until you return through it. Hit Boxes are very forgiving eg the lions big hair part doesn’t count and when you switch forms fast you need to keep in mind that the hit box changes. I’m not saying the game is perfect but I cannot accept the expression that it’s broken. It’s not easy, it demands a lot of attention but it gives you the tools and hints to solve and win the game gracefully.

That would be me. I was involved (and approved) the entire game from start to finish so it was in my responsibility. I'm sorry that you dislike the 2nd half of Monster Boy! We put a lot of work and love into the game and our mission was to keep it interesting from start to finish. It really isn't the typical Metroidvania game with large simple hallways and maybe combat focus - we created a game that cherishes exploration and fresh ideas + giving the player an unrestricted chance to combine *all* abilities in an evolving game design over the 20-25 hours journey. The 2nd half requires to keep in mind a lot of things but I don't see any elements that are obtuse or cheap. You can always outsmart the game but admittedly, it's not easy. Monster Boy isn't a game that you play while watching a movie, it demands full attention of the player in the 2nd half. The Volcano and Haunted Manor require to concentrate and not rush through them. I can explain every single room and we tested them with players of all skill levels. I'm very proud of the team at Game Atelier and the game, as it's something unique and completely different compared to other games. The system menu idea that you mentioned is just a very short 4th wall break element that's part of our constant thrive to keep the game fresh. Maybe we don't hit the taste of each player every time but the overall game offers so many things and mechanics, I think it's very exciting to explore and the feedback we received from players (who finished the game) and press members (who finished the game) was thankfully very good. I hope we can transport this idea to even more to players the next time and make even more players happy with it. It's always our mission to provide a highest quality, meaty and exciting game for your hard earned money.

BTW: We noticed that some PS4/Xbox players had trouble with the timing/controls in the Volcano and they fixed it by using 'Game Mode' setting on the TV. It reduces the lag tremendously. That's right there's currently no way to turn this off. We've added it to our to-do list for a future option (we'll keep working on the game)Thank you! I'm glad that you enjoy the game. ^_^ The boots and armors require to rebuild the animation because it changes the look of the character; while shield, sword and bracelet don't require that. Therefore, boots and armors have a loading time. Unfortunately the heavy boots switching is pretty much the only way to reach the secrets in the first stage so if you're playing thoroughly it's annoying to have so many loading times in a short timeframe. In an overall look at the entire game this is a small percentage of playtime where I have to agree that it's disturbing the flow too much. We didn't find a proper solution yet but we'll try to improve it in the future.Right now we're still working on improving the first time experience for many console users and some bugs and glitches came up that we want to fix before taking the code and building the PC version based on that. We also plan to add more savegame slots for Switch players first. In the near future we plan to release 1.0.4 to all consoles with many bugs/glitches fixed that came up during Christmas/New Year player feedback and reports. Then we add saveslots and an anti-flashing light option for players with epilepsy/sensitivity to light flashes. Finally, when we finish the PC port we'll try to add 120Hz and 21:9 support. It will take some time and we'll announce an exact date for PC later. Thank you for your patience! You can't go wrong with any version as they all perform at 1080p/60fps. Please choose based on portability yes/no. If you own a 4K screen (or even OLED) and you own a PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One X (and if you don't need portability) then I recommend a 4K console because the high color output looks better.

About your first question: there’s no puzzle here, it’s redundant - but yes it’s a very inviting setup and I think we had a puzzle here in earlier days but over time we changed secrets and positions multiple times :p As for the crash: There’s no known issue here, do you play EU or USA version ? We can test play the fight a couple times. Is it pro or normal PS4? Was it King Frog or Snake (without ,King‘ wording) ?

Not 100% correct because the pig (and snake) can still wear bracelets. However, the main point is right as the pig is mostly mage and secret sniffer after you unlocked multiple forms with better combat abilities.

It’s not a progress block just a very unfortunate physics reaction. The correct way is to make the lava crust with ice boots first (right next to the geyser) and then drop the block on it so it goes on top of the geyser. Unfortunately just when he had the setting right, the block didn’t slide to the end of the platform after catapulting it there with lion upward Dash. So when he dashed against the block twice it had too much momentum so it didn’t smash on the lava crust first and pushed the geyser down. We’ll improve this level

Some tips if you missed 2 heart containers and play the forest with 3 hearts. Fill up your fire magic in the underground passage between Westfield and forest. Use it against the mud enemies. The game also saves your progress when you get new magic truffles and the next one is after 3 forest screens so it’s not far. Save spot always refills 3 hearts when respawning. Use pigs stomp attack in the mid you can reposition it slightly in air which gives you more time outside the mud and lets you jump high when hitting a mud enemy on the head. Don’t forget to use magic regularly.

He fell into the water (right in the first beach section) and tried to jump back out onto the platform he was falling from and it didn't work. When he learned he had to swim back to the ladder to get back up he threw the controller on our table and left calling it a shit game. It was a very shocking and disrespectful scene. The exact date will be announced later, it depends on some external factors like cartridge production time, worldwide age ratings and let's not forget all platform holder approvals which need to be in sync for global sim-ship release. (Switch,PS4,Xbox One). Finger crossed all goes well! :) We worked really hard to create an amazing action adventure from start to finish and we hope that players agree with us. If the game finds love after release and receives good ratings, the chances are much bigger to find further support from bigger distributors that may offer a reasonable EU retail (physical release) business model.

The problem is not to find a partner; we have several offers from distributors in Europe. The problem is that the EU retail market is so incredibly fragmented and our game not a well known title, so everyone and his uncle demands a big chunk of the share which means from €40 in retail we end up with like €4-5 in our own pocket. It's impossible to recoup the expensive development that way. The US market and our distribution partner (Sega) give us much more air to breathe.

Well, I think it all depends on the reception of the game when it's out. If it gets a high metascore and a decent amount of sales, the chance for a physical copy on Xbox is higher. It's not happening for launch because right now we already have a 20:1 pre-order ratio Switch vs. PS4. I'd expect a low amount of physical pre-orders for Xbox One given the lower hardware install base compared to PS4. And yet - Xbox has a minimum order quantity for discs that's higher than PS4. I also recommend everyone who's interested in physical copies to pre-order the Switch or PS4 version rather sooner than later as it could sell out rather quickly and a reprint is not guaranteed.

Thanks for sharing your excitement and it's so cool to see Dynastic Hero images! <3 I recently played it on my Turbo Duo and it's a bit easier than the Mega Drive version (WB in MW). CD music is great but it misses some re-arrangements of the cartridge that I hoped to hear: Would have loved a re-arrange track of the underwater music from Mega Drive - so we did that for Monster Boy! Fan Service for ourselves :) Let's not compare with Monster World II (Dragon's Trap) but more with MWIII from Sega Mega Drive. Imagine Monster Boy like Wonder Boy in Monster World with a faster pacing and more dynamic world puzzles / interactions. There are high speed passages where you dash like sonic in lion form and then reach a dead end where you need to transform in realtime to a different form (e.g frog). In the 2nd half of the game it really opens up and you should always remember your abilities + additional equipment features. Using ice boots on lava, wear illuminated armor to dive into dark depths of the ocean. Remember that snake can't wear armor so better be careful when crawling into tiny spots with unknown obstacles. The major change compared to older Wonder Boy games is really that you constantly have all unlocked abilities available and don't need to return to a certain spot to change your form. This allows for some cool action puzzles.

It's not only the raw animation, it will be combined with some tech for lighting (e.g. RIM lighting, color reflection, white eyes visible in the dark etc) so we get a cohesive, beautiful image quality. The final result will be very unique and we want to show new material when we implemented all features. Yes HD rumble will be supported. The Steam page will be newly set up with updated material and trailer which means it won't happen very soon. First the game needs to be in the required final visual state to record it. Also please keep in mind that Monster Boy releases on consoles first, Steam later. We just can't finish the game for all platforms at once as our manpower is limited. Thank you! Yes, you can expect a lot of fan service in this game. :) Thanks a lot! <3 There's no easy answer to that as the Wonder Boy series has many games for arcade and home console. Monster Boy is a new name but based on the Wonder Boy in Monster World home console series of games. Note that the title mixes Wonder Boy and Monster World, hence Monster Boy. Expect a colorful interconnected open world with many places to explore. I would say it's a sequel to the two Mega Drive 'Monster World' games, but more dynamic and faster paced including several quality of life improvements that are expected in modern games. First of all, thanks for sharing your excitement about this game and Dragon's Trap! However, please note that the Dragon's Trap remake was created by our friends at Lizardcube and not from FDG/Game Atelier. We only work on the Monster Boy game currently. The most enjoyable moments are when all things come together and fit perfectly. Like a new gameplay idea that plays great and each media element just pushes that idea further - music, graphics, sound effect. Most challenging or perhaps awkward moment was early in development when we realized that we can't just make HD tilesets to create a nice looking HD game world. You really need to add an insane amount of details to make a world similar believable as a low-res pixel-based world. The reason is that pixel games are almost like books. A lot is happening in the brain, completing the artwork. This is not applicable when you deliver a sharp image. It immediately looks dull if certain details are missing. Its very challenging to make a good looking and dynamic HD Action Adventure.

We're using dynamic lightning, shadow, shaders and all kinds of stuff to beam you right into the world. You'll not watch it as a painting, the picture will pull you right into the world. I'm sure you'll love it.

Hi Everyone! Let's talk about the graphics again when you played the final game. I think you'll be surprised :) The new artwork goes in line with the new character design which is more Japanese. Dragon's Trap remake went for a western style.

We went for a different style because we've been imagining how a true HD successor could look like with Japanese design in mind and a world that's more dynamic and alive than the classic games. The Dragon's Trap remake art style doesn't work for our game because Monster Boy has a more complex map setup. Instead of mostly running planes we broke with various conventions of the classic games for a more dynamic, responsive and very direct action platformer. Don't believe me though, play it when it's out. You'll see :)

Hi Everyone, very happy to read you enjoyed the trailer. For those who disliked our song choice: There's an option menu in the game to switch to the OV (Japanese) song. Always good to have a choice, right? :)
