Thread Daemon X Machina - Review Thread
Yeah, absoltuely. That demo really was a way for them to get feedback, which they definitely incorporated into the final product. They released a trailer about all the changes they made, even: Even just traversal feels way better than that initial release. It's worth downloading the new demo to test it out and see if it clicks with you, especially since progress is saved.

I really think it just has to do with taste, and the way that many of the subgenre's traits intersect with expectations about things like movement, shooting, and structure in third person action games/shooters. Though there's a range in feel in TPS games (Gears, TLoU, and Vanquish all feel different even if the basic verbs are the same), there's still a general similarity to each other in terms of gameplay style. Armored Core games just (even to each other, contrast AC3, 4, and V). They're or the shooting is All of that is true, too, but for me, that's the appeal. The point of an AC game (or DXM) is building a body you to inhabit, and struggling against the mechanical constraints to do that. You learn to counterbalance the mech's traits both by becoming a better pilot and by tinkering away with your design until it boosts the right way, or until it can hold onto a target lock long from the right distance, or until it is exactly as sturdy as you need. Contrast that with action games where you're supposed to get to a point of synchronicity with your character quickly, and their power and versatility is supposed to go up over the course of play. That isn't a drag on people who don't like these games, to be clear. I get it! You want to pick up the controller and for it to "feel good" out the box. I'm that way with plenty of other games. But this style of mech game is all about that loop of mastery and redesign, and I don't know that it gets there if it isn't willing to have your character feel less like an action hero and more like a machine you've got to learn to handle.

It's wild, actually. I think DXM is story focusd than AC (uh, either Astral Chain OR Armored Core) in that it spends way more time with the characters it has. I didn't find space for it in the review, but there's a lot of dialogue in this game, and each story mission briefing includes a simple cutscene or one of those text conversations between pilots. By the final act, each of the game's squads has developed a clear narrative arc with its major characters, and the game manages to tie up most of these B plots well enough, with a couple of them ending really well. There's some really cool shit in here, and I think for people who like anime archetypes, you'll come out with a some favorite NPCs. (And if you don't like that stuff, you can button through it and fight giant robots.)

I believe this only works with "sniper rifles," which are pretty rare drops in these missions. (Wild to type "rare drop" in what is essentially an Armored Core game...) I got one pretty early on, but YMMV. The variou abilities you mention should be in the body mod list, or at least some of them were in the first prototype demo.

Headlines be like that. FWIW, they’re similarly long, upgrade-focused character action games, so I stand by the statement, but yeah, now that these go out on VICE’s social networks and not just our own, we need to swing a way bigger net with article packaging.

Nope! We annoucned last week that we'd only be doing a couple of pods this week with Cado out (and with the rest of us also all having some weird availability this week). We all just have very busy weeks doing other work right now, so we couldn't do the thing where Danielle or I edited it in a pinch, like we used to do. We'll get back to Waypoints next week!

Worth looking beyond the Support convos for Ike x Soren: For instance the last minute or so here: Like hat_hair says, def possible to read as homosocial and not homoerotic--and I want more games with healthy male friends, too! But also, this convo probably helps contextualize the ship.

I said it once and I'll say it again: I bet they're going to re-release Cyberpunk 2077 branded, digital Netrunner.

The first piece of advice is to be patient and thorough. Sometimes the crystals aren't in the most obvious of places. The other thing to consider, especially on Brittle Hollow is:

That's... a lot of hints, I know, but this is DEF one of the big final navigational mysteries/puzzles of the game, and was one of the final ones I solved, so wanted to make sure you could feel it out on your own if you wanted.

Is there actually still a mark on your rumor map that says you're missing something? If not, move on. My memory is shaky but...Have you found the distress signal in the dark bramble yet? That's the first step.

Just to clarify, Joel hasn't been working with us on a day to day basis for about six months now. Coming into 2019, his role ("publisher") was eliminated from his side of the business, so his title changed and his day-to-day was way more to do with VICE-in-general than Waypoint specifically. He will def be missed, as he was someone we could count on for a little extra support and just someone with a TON of institutional knowledge ("hey Joel, who do we talk to if we want X?" type stuff). But I'm stoked for his new opportunities, and he'll always be a part of the Waypoint community as far as I'm concerned.

Without giving it away: You'll note that the colors don't change, but that it WILL tell you if you've missed something in a given location with a little orange icon. Speaking of the rumor board, super important note: Any entry you know the location of/have been to, you can select and create a waypoint for. This is a huge help in the late game when you want to revisit places that you can't quite remember how to get to.

All said took me around 25-30 hours? But that was with zero guides or people to bounce ideas off of, and also a lot of experimenting with end-of-loop gamestate stuff.

Yeah that must be the case. And the loop is every 22 minutes on the dot. Maybe the first one is 22 minutes from when you launch, so that it doesn't happen while you're still in the tutorial area? Also yes, is built around trying to cram as much forward progress into 1 minute chunks as you possibly can. basically never demands you do anything like this—though you might end up trying to cram in as much as you can in some loops anyway. I have lots of good memories of wrapping up something on one planet, then rushing to another to try to make good use of the info I just read before the loop closes. But I also took a much more relaxed approach to many cycles.

The second you add something to the log, it's in the log permanently, even if you quick the the title screen and start a new loop immediately. You can safely do this whenever you want to, and I did it a lot after getting separated from my ship in weird ways or getting stuck on planets that I'd already fully explored. Also, there's another, even faster way to restart the loop.

I know I wrote a whole ass review about this already, but for real: I love this game with my whole heart, and it's doing some genuinely new stuff (while also building off of a ton of disparate and cool influences). I'm so happy this is on Game Pass, if only because I want more people to get nudged towards playing it.

Yeah, I been here. Not sure why I'm not verified (I don't post much is actually why). Mods? If folks have questions as they explore, ping me here or on Twitter. That said, one of the coolest things about the game is solving its mysteries for yourself, so def exhaust your options before looking outside the game for guidance!
