Thread What game is your white whale? One you don't enjoy but keep trying to like?
Assassins Creed Odyssey, Origins and Valhala. Assassins Creed is one of my FAVORITE franchises, but this new one is like "New Coke" or Game of Thrones Season 8. You want to like it because it is what you love, but its oh so hard.Same. It's like, if you are going to go Dark Souls go Dark Souls, if you are going to go Action go Action, this in between thing just slows down the flow and makes you feel like shit. It's why I prefer combat more closely to Fallen Order, since its more action and fantasy.

Little Big Planet was my jam when I was a teen. It's simple enough to get something quickly, but advanced enough that it really feels like actual game development in a lot of ways. And from there transitioning to Dreams would be easier and that is basically a game engine so... it's also good to do a LOT of different things, find out what they like and don't like, makes it easier to focus on something.

Cool, can't wait to DL it, play it for 8 minutes and then turn off till the next update. Ohh yesss, this was the most excited I been about something this year. That' sad. Very promising and also makes me INCREDIBLY jazzed that Rockstar is still considering evolution in these areas and they are still something of a focus. I was worried they'd give up and just cash into the Multiplayer realm exclusively. The RDR2 NPC life simulation was one of my favorite things, love that attention to detail and strides to improve AI simulations. It was stated that the Console could act as the server, so it's not necessarily an always online type of thing. Just that a portion of your hardware would be dedicated to the server simulation of the AI inhabitants, which would then free up computations from the minute to minute gameplay.

And it’s nice having an outside studio work on a cool trailer, helps solidify a vision for the team and investors.

Can a fiction game have a universe in which Cops are actually good and useful? Perhaps a name change? In a world of INSANE crime like Superhero worlds are, it is a completely different universe, so it makes more sense. It's a tricky problem to tackle, but also opens the door to multitude of questions with, "Should I hurt or fight any of these people? Maybe some of them are truly kind inside or not on a bad path" which a Spider-man game is more about Pow Slam Zwip. It's an interesting dilemma though (games are weird).

Thread Those who did not like story beat of certain character in TLOU 2, can I ask you something? (Open TLOU 2 spoilers)
Fuck. I have no idea. It is truly the FIRST game to make me feel that emotion, never thought it'd be possible. It's hard to tell if it is a CHEAPASS way to get you invested or an absolutely brilliant way to get you invested. I think if I was the only one with that emotion and the characters were more casual about it, I'd have a bigger problem with it, but the emotions of the characters echoed mine in a way, so it felt more warranted. It's why I consider this game a masterpiece in interactive story telling, bringing those types of emotions into a game is pretty insane. With that said though, it only works for this Game Series and this type of game. If any other developers try to parrot that emotion, they will fail hard. It's a world that is founded in violence about violence, so the main character receiving a violent sudden end fits the universe. If BOTW2 begins with Link getting brutally murdered, while I may enjoy that, it would not fit it.

Thread The $70 Price Tag Is Actually Indefensible (The Jimquisition)
I'd understand these arguments more if games were a static price, like how Nintendo prices their crap... I can't believe Mario Kart is still $60. But, game prices are variable, they were "too expensive at $60" for most, but you pay a premium for getting stuff day one. Just how it is, it's how all hobbies are, there are cheap ways to get into all hobbies and this doesn't prevent games from still being the same. The shit is predatory when they never drop price or go on sale (*cough* MARIO KART GODDAM *cough). Or if they still fill the titles up with too many microtransactions/dlc (too many fighting games now..). Saying just $70 is "TOO MUCH" is just entirely dependent on the context of what you are talking about... especially in an industry as diverse as gaming. This shit always irks me, when they ever discuss greed they highlight the 3 guys that still wear suits in the gaming industry and neglect the countless smaller studios that close down to not making decent profits or a lot of the industry jobs that are underpaid/expendable. It lacks focus.

Thread The $70 Video Game - Top-end game pricing has never been lower when measured in constant dollars [Ars]
So then, what's the issue? You a pay a premium price to get things first, it goes with every hobby or activity in life. I don't understand how gamers consider $70 initial price as predatory or evil. It is way a bigger issue when you refuse to drop your prices and maintain that "PREMIUM" price: See Nintendo Prices. Also a lot of the whole DLC/Microtransaction crap was included to make up for the cost of game prices not being allowed to rise. Blanketly saying, "Games arent worth $70" is super subjective and prices/titles vary wildly. Games should never have been stuck to this linear payment model, but here we are.

Thread WIRED: The New Demon's Souls Remake Tries Too Hard to Be Realistic
Yes, it's quite interesting that this malevolent studio went OUT of their way to, REMAKE this old PS3 title. Blasphemy, they should have just upressed the original version and made sure the framerate is solid, it would have sold and preformed way more solidly. Sorry for this overly sarcastic take, but it is just kind of ridiculous what you are all implying. I completely understand and respect people preferring the original feel of the old Demon Souls, nostalgia and overall feel can definitely play a huge part in preferences. But when you all start trying to speak objectively about these things it quickly falls apart and you are allowing these things to cloud your view of a REMAKE, thats soul purpose is to remake it in a more appealing veneer that more people will enjoy. The very base of all this is that the original still remains, they never attempted to hide it or cover that up. But remaking it to fit a modern day higher quality aesthetic. When I stated that the original had some interesting art direction choices, I didn't mean they bloomed the hell out of environments to hide their texture issues and lack of lighting, I meant in terms of concept from base shape language to interesting ideas/themes. All of which are still kept in the remake, but improved upon. Even the Fire Jester guy has a way tighter conceptual idea opposed to, "Put fat man in funny jester clothes". But I know I'm at odds here, I'm familiar with some parts of society that cherish original versions of things and despise remakes. Which I can completely understand. I do appreciate the conversation though.

I don’t think anybody is saying its flawless, just that it was headed in a really interesting direction. Completely removing all of it and remaking it into an RPG was just over board... AC Unity was at a time where they were still doing yearly installments. Imagine that engine/scope with an actual development time and budget.

Thread So I'm watching a video comparing AC: Valhalla's stealth to AC: Unity's stealth, and...
Never understood the lack of backlash with how the AC series turned out. You adjust anything in a game series and people throw a shit party, they completely scrapped the essence of Assassins Creed and made it into an overly bloated RPG and it was business as normal. My biggest disappointment of this generation. I don’t mind them having a RPG spinoff version of AC but it is such a bummer they completely scrapped the original formula. And it’s incredible the achievement Unity was, people dog on it because it does have a lot of issues, but keep in mind it was the first of this new refresh and still beholden to the old yearly formula with a smaller budget. Imagine them having the Origins/Odyssey time to really flesh out the systems and polish it up, with that beautiful animation engine. Sigh, have to let it go though.

They make me, so frustrated. Especially all the love they get, because I like being in "the know" of games, so I don't want to shut out these experiences. So I find myself forcing my way through them and cursing everyone that loves them every hour or so. If you love these types of games infallibly, I have probably inadvertently cursed you out at some point... so I'm sorry. There is a fine fucking line though of TERRIBLE GAME DESIGN and "FUN REWARDING CHALLENGE" that these games skirt heavily. It's not always flawless fun. Running around a dark hallway no idea where the fuck I'm going, getting one shot by some glowing creature that can stun lock you through walls and then losing all your souls is not always enjoyable. But I do find myself crawling back after I swear them off... there is something enjoyable about them.

Thread PS5 details revealed for Rainbow Six Siege
Still feel like an old person with the Activity Cards. Are they ALWAYS up to date with your latest save? Like is there potential to choose an activity card that is based on an older save, that then takes back your progression to an earlier point? Not sure why I have that fear, but it seemed like a potential issue. I guess I'm also worried how tested they are, like if I'm playing Spider-man and my save is at point A and before I start I select to start at point B, could point A now be compromised? Just feels odd having a tertiary game mechanic that is not within the game echosystem -- like if the developer wanted the ability to Fast Select the "Crime Lair" Mission, they'd have made an option ingame for that...

Thread Naughty Dog did it; TLOU2 made me forget it was a video game.
Yep, absolutely. Folks love to downplay this significance of its storytelling capabilities, but it truly hit a new benchmark for me. It was definitely the first time I was moved outside of the games ecosystem and was fully immersed in its story telling, feeling engrossed at times like I do with really great shows/films ect. The community discussion around this game perfectly prove this as well: people are consistently arguing and passionately discussing the games story/experience, you don't really get that in typical game releases. Those that dismiss it rarely if ever have any examples of what "did it better"... while I don't declare this to be the pinnacle of game story-telling, it's another step in a direction for having this medium be an engaging story telling medium right along side others. Yall have to understand, game story-telling is still extremely new... we just VERY recently got believable-ish facial/emotion capture. Honestly I'd say this game is the first to achieve a new layer of subtle character emotions that is needed to tell more complex stories. It's only going to get better. That is a really cool idea! Never seen that.

The thing I’ve been realizing about the issue of the internet, is that normal people just doing their jobs can be elevated to a point of “celebrity” but without the benefits of being one, so you do not have the money to help cushion against the negative consequences of being in a spotlight. (Hiring a team that can deal with all the shit for example, good legal teams and when things get even worse; security ect.) You see it all the time with streamers ect. Geoff is a treat for this industry and also a very pleasant person. It always bugged me cause they literally never said that, but the Internet Zeitgeist needs a narrative so they went with it. They meant having an "on rails" linear style shorter experience is not the type of game that people crave at the time. So they wanted to mend it by making it more of an open experience, they never stated Single-Player Games are dead.

I wish this narrative would end, it’s a tale as old as time. They both help each other out... consoles force a new minimum to be pushed up every generation and force in new technology. PC’s help push the hardware specs higher throughout the generation. Nothing is holding the other back, they coexist and create a good landscape for developers. If consoles did not exist, its not like suddenly developers would start developing exclusively for SSD’s, they’d still be trailing behind.

Thread Are video games your favorite artistic medium? Why or why not?
That's why it's super exciting to me, you could say the same thing about Movies at the dawn of its creation and how it was an untested medium for its time. It's kind of why it irks me when people berate or get overly negative when a game tells a story and isn't perfect, because there isn't a comparison, every game that pushes story telling is pioneering new ways of how stories can be told. Its an iterative process that hasn't yet been mastered. We have had glimpses of story telling perfection, but it has yet to be fully achieved I feel. Which keeps me enthralled in this medium, the untapped potential I believe far exceeds any other medium.

Thread Comparing base consoles only, isn't next-gen the biggest generational leap in forever?
I agree, but I feel a lot of people overstate it. SNES and other platforms at the time already messed with 3D Rendering. I still agree it was huge, especially being a small child at the time. But people use this to invalidate every technological game advancement we ever have it seems... and act as if N64 was the first realm into 3D Gaming. Plus outside of some exceptions a lot of those products were really bad, we just remember all the gems that did it perfectly. In general I just find it weird when people rank "Generational Leaps". They were all important and critical for their respective times.

Most Devs have thought about everything and discussed it at length, even if the idea or concept seems super obvious on paper, it sometimes just doesn't work in practice or has extreme ramifications for other things you haven't even thought about. Yea, I understand you can "do more stuff" in Odyssey and Origins, that was never up for debate. But the "look unity has more assassination animations or some shit" has always been why I loved Assassins Creed. Give me one or two centralized locations, that are polished to a nice shine with some interesting crowd/animation dynamics and I'll be happy. Unity was not my favorite Assassins Creed and had a TON of issues, but I really like where that technology was headed. It was their first attempt (in like 1-2 years!), I was really hoping for a 2-3 year added increased development cycle to really flesh out those new systems and create a really compelling AC game. Instead they kind of threw out everything and made some RPG esque AC game. Which again is fine, but I wish they at least Call of Dutied it and had different feels/team per game release. Give me, Assassins Creed: Origins and then Assassins Creed V. Assassins Creed Odyssey and then Assassins Creed VI. Also, yes Cities. I miss Cities. Having Assassins Creed in large open areas is like having Spider-man set in the desert.

Bahh, gotcha. Interesting takes... I've worked on Console Exclusives and PC Exclusives and you feel extremely limited when working on a PC Exclusive title, since you HAVE to develop it with the lowest of the low in mind or else you'll get such reduced sales it makes it pointless. Working on a console exclusive is so freeing, because you can just keep squeezing the juice of the console until it doesn't run anymore, then scale back a tad, so your original vision has an easier time holding throughout the production. There are of course exceptions, like certain engines will scale regardless, but it's always nice to know exactly what you are aiming at.

Because making games are extremely difficult. I’d give you a thousand bucks to find me an artist that is ok with downgrading/reducing their work. It hurts way harder than it hurts you, one of the most devastating parts of the art realm. But making games is a team effort, it’s not all about you and stuff has to come together at the end to make it work. It’s very difficult determining what is and is not going to be possible until that game is done and on disc. It’s never the intention for a developer to deceive. It is just what happens with a creative and difficult medium, it’s always evolving and adjusting.

Thread Has anyone ever 'left' PC Gaming to go back to being console only?
My god. Just recently I got a GPU with Raytrace capabilities and have been out of playing hardcore PC games (outside of the occasional indie title, overwatch, vr, ect). Wanted to check out what games support Raytracing, found a decent list, so I went to check out Doom Eternal, turns out the Raytracing isnt actually enabled just yet? Had to research all about it and found some people are using custom mods to enable it? Forget it. So I decided to try Shadow of the Tomb Raider... went to Steam and searched it up, found it, but there is literally no option to purchase it? Only thing was a bundle for $60? Which I did not want. So I gave up and decided to just do Control (already beat it on Xbox X, but wanted to try the Raytracing capabilities), searched it up on Steam, says Preorder now? Uh, I thought its out. Apparently not on STEAM though. Fuck. Ok, I'll just download the Xbox Game app for my PC to get Control there. It forces me to upgrade my Windows, so I say fine lets do it and it makes me restart my PC and updates for about 45 minutes. Which was frustrating cause I was in a bit of a rush, so I just come back to it and my computer is finally back. Now I have to install the XBOX GAME app and go through all that, then log in and figure out that info. Finally get on there and remember Control wasn't gamepass, fine I'll just buy it AGAIN, search for it, Control is not on the XBOX Game store. It is on the EPIC game store. I'm done. So I say screw that and just decide to download Wolfenstein off Gamepass (it has raytrace capabilities), go to install it and my Drives cannot be detected. Have to spent 30 minutes online trying to trouble shoot it. But then that troubleshoot fails and it STILL does not work... so I have given up and gone back to just playing Overwatch. Also, I never understood this argument about how "cheap" PC games are. Literally all those games mention were still $60 even though there are some cheaper on console. Wanted to repurchase RDR2, still $60. Titanfall 2, $30? Doom Eternal still $60? Prey $30? Farcry 5 was like $50? ect. ect. People always talk like PC games are just being thrown at you for $5. I do remember a time of Steam Summer sales being ridiculous and console games being stagnant, but it seems a lot of digital console games are on sale constantly as well. So not sure why that argument still stands. I do love both platforms very much, but there are definitely times I just cannot handle babysitting my PC and just want to chill on my couch and one button play stuff.

What I meant is, every time I try to play Origins/Odyssey, I feel like I'm playing a Single-player MMORPG. From the weight of the combat, the overwhelming size of things, the structure of missions, to the floaty and inconsistencies of certain actions and maneuvers. Even visually, the games just feel like a really nice MMORPG, without any of the benefits of an MMORPG. No longer this tight focused action stealth title.

Honestly when a publisher can only show very small cut up snippits of gameplay, its usually a sign they are not confident for the game to speak for itself or its just so rough in so many areas that its hard for it to be shown without it exploding. When a game looks and plays great, Publishers are punching the developers in the face to get more footage out there to show.

Plus limited loading times for next gen makes me way more excited for this generation then any others. Plus you are all in a time where devs don’t try to bamboozle as much anymore, devs like showing their raw game at the time (so prealpha footage often). While I do appreciate when developers break things down to rebuild it up, I wish they left the occasional Assassin Assassin game for us that appreciate that sort of gameplay that is no longer catered to... Ehhhh, you'd be surprised how much fucky stuff UE4 does, especially with texture streaming and compression. A lot of which you cannot identify until everything is assembled and working together near end of production, which then causes a lot of issues in trying to fix said issues once identified too late. Literally one character adjustment or texture scale can cause UE4 to down-sample even important textures. They could have just added another trinket on Clouds belt that then fucked with all the environments, but then the directors prioritize character streaming so its ignored or too tricky to fix. Unreal is not as friendly as a lot of people like to think it is.

Thread [Polygon] Animal Crossing players are starting over after dozens (or hundreds) of hours
Kinda shameful how some of the people here are downplaying the negative and overwhelming affects of Social Media and the pressure it can bring especially for younger people. I predicted this at the beginning that this game will break down due to the same issues prevalent in real life and self comparison. Previous iterations of Animal Crossing existed when social media pressure wasn’t as extreme, so you could easily exist in a more chill atmosphere of a game. Nowadays everything is compared and contrasted so you can instantly fall into a hole of self loathing. I put in about a hundred hours into this game just doing what I can, when I started looking at what others were doing I quickly had to shut that out or else I’d be consumed with trying to compete. Society just needs better mental health support so we can get through this age of self hatred and always feeling like you aren’t good enough. Or we can just instead say stuff like “juz relax and get over it” “just take xanax”

Thread Digital Foundry: PlayStation 5 / Unreal Engine 5 Reaction - Now This Is Next-Gen!
This is so exciting and surreal, I had this prediction a while ago and have been seeing it come to fruition is exciting and a bit scary (being in the industry). This next generation will act as the bridge between film and games, the lines will start to blur and techniques will converge. People that work solely in film or solely in games will now be able to move between those lines more easily, allowing for new interesting ideas and experiences across both mediums. After this generation I think we will be on to the generation where Film and Game are one in the same (in terms of creation). You go to school to learn “computer art” not film or game specialists. And to have an even longer prediction I’d say: this next gen is the bridge generation, the nex next generation will be the film and games reach a parity generation and the next next next generation will be the everything generation. Similar to how Dreams works, game engines will be usable enough for everyone to create and the lines between professional and consumer will blur a bit. (We already get glimpses of that) It’s gonna be weird... i’m happy to embrace this future though.

I get it's a new trend nowadays to just force things to adhere to the RPG guidelines because it is much easier and cleaner to design for, but Assassins Creed had something incredibly unique at its core that only a huge studio could facilitate. With some refinement and evolution, the games could have carved out a really unique niche that scratches that itch. Blending in with a crowd to approach your victim and silently removing them then scrambling back into a crowd or escaping to the roof tops was the heart of Assassins Creed to me. I doubt they'll ever truly go back there, but I hope there is some middle ground that could please both sides.

Abso-lutely. Incredible accomplishment, definitely echo sentiments about the main-story missions, they definitely don't coexist well with everything else. But the story is good enough to keep it going. I've been playing through again super slowly, without a hud or anything and just would walk. Made me think about how good a Red Dead game would be with literally no main-story and just side quests that branch out into bigger things or nothing at all... the strongest part is definitely the sidequests. Just wandering along a river, see a guy preaching in the waters, walked up to him, talks about how I'm not ready ect. (which starts a sidequest) but imagine if it was all like that and they just lead to bigger things. Would be perfect.Honestly never thought about it that way... Oh god. Mind blown. Side missions being you the player with your moral judgements and Arthur coming to terms with being a better person, allowing more freedom and expression. Where as the main-missions you are doing what DUTCH wants and so you have this rigidly and frustration with the system not letting you do what you want. I'm sure it was not designed that way, but looking at it like that makes it really interesting.

I don’t think people understand just how unmatched RDR2 is, it just is absolutely mind blowing to me to this day. The visual fidelity and detail with the sheer scope is honestly unnerving, we should investigate Rockstar for Alien activity. Triple A console exclusive titles optimized for one console specification arent even achieving even some of the subtle blending and detail environmental work they are achieving in an open world game. Plus just the dense and expansive procedural systems are unmatched... having this many unique Npc’s together in a close area having some fluid discussions is unseen. I just walked through Valentine yesterday and looked at a lady up on a balcony, targeted her and pressed Greet. Arthur yells up to her a unique dialogue about what she was doing, she yells back down something kind of insulting so I insulted her back and some guy from the street walks up to me and states “you better watch how you talk to that lady” and pushes me. Yall have no idea what a sweet lord pain it is getting any system close to that working is like. The expense of it alone is mind boggling... and that’s just one small system in a game with tons and tons of those types of things. I completely get a lot of them breakdown over time or is mind numbing boring for some, but it’s astonishing in what it does. Also Red Dead Stardew Valley is my dream game. That’s all.

Yep! The Rian Johnson Episode 9 would have been rad. If you read the leaked Trevvorrow script, it sounds much more in line with where Rian was going, would have been a very interesting departure, still a lot of flaws but way more Star Wars then what we got.

Thread Devs react to PS5 specs - Twitter edition
So weird some of the sentiments here, "First Part devs are excited, DUH let's hear from the devs that have to work on multiplatform!". Why? Why would a tech that would fundamentally change how you make a game pertain to a developer that is not utilizing that tech? No, 3rd party devs can't utilize this tech to its fullest because then those games would not work on any other hardware configuration... whys this a shock? There will be fundamental help from having a system with an SSD, but you cannot develop your game around it when working multiplatform (for now, hopefully this forces everyone to utilize SSD configuration).

Thread Do you think AAA studios should calm down with their pursuit of visual showcase and high production value?
Yea don't believe that artists should stop striving for more just because people feel its "good enough", there should be opportunities for games ect. that don't strive for a high level of visual quality and innovation, but I feel every department should be pushing for their best. It's up to the director to discern what is most important... I get a lot of gamers don't value the strides a lot of artists have accomplished in the game visual realm, but there are a lot of people that value this medium of visual story telling and want to see it evolve. Also good luck telling game artists to "calm down" and stop pushing it. ;)

Very true, but I think in those cases they used a main game as a base, where as Dreams doesn't really have one solid game mechanic as its base, the story that Media Molecule crafted is exceptional, but not necessarily open to interesting derivation within its mechanic parameters. Again, hopefully I'm wrong... Just not sure if we'd ever get to a point where you'll be telling your buddies to load up Dreams so we can do a round or two of _______. What it might do is work as a prototype concept and then push towards a full game production based on that concept. And don't read this as me saying, "Its been a week where are the master-pieces!" I definitely think they will come and be pretty close to a working thing, but I'm not sure if the audience will be there in 1-2 years when it finally happens...

And it's clearly not (regardless of how people complain). It was incredibly shitty and not just for lacking him in the game, but for hearing from gamestop, in a fucking ad, "UNLOCK THE PROTHEAN CHARACTER TO HAVE ON YOUR SQUAD!" like... what a huge colossal fucking weird twist/spoiler to be revealed in a horrible marketing campaign. Thread Dreams |OT| What Games Are Made Of
Man, this game blows my mind and I feel like it deserves some type of Technology award. They actually pulled off combining a game engine with a sculpting program with a music mixing program with a painter program with a modeling program with a rigging tool with an animation suite ect. ect. It's mind boggling. As a game dev, I wish I could invest time into this, but it's basically learning a new engine for me... a lot of this shit is how all games are made. With all that said however, I unfortunately cannot see this game having any legs at all. Without a proper pay model that would incentives creators to make full polished products, it's hard to keep a players interest in the "products" made with this engine. The honest most difficult part of a games development is the last 5-10% of its creation, which is the toughest most grindy part and I can't see many creators getting to that point. While they made a super compelling Engine an engine is only as good as its software... hopefully I'm wrong though!

No idea why I was so seething overly excited for this game, haha. Controversial opinion though, but I do feel like we lost something when we left the overly ambitious blue-sky bullshot phase. It's nice to see what could be possible in the future and I'd say FFXV pretty much captured the feeling of that trailer. It would be kind of cool to have a presentation or something once a year, called "Far future of gaming" where they fund some compelling bullshots of what games in the future might be like.

Thread Let’s discuss what Mass Effect 1 got right that the sequels fell short on
Yessss, these have always been my exact feelings on the subject as well, thanks for writing them out. It all comes down to feeling like you are in something much grander then you yourself. In Mass Effect 1, the Galaxy felt vast and never-ending, it felt even scary at times the weight of the Universe and not knowing what is out there. Which I guess didn't make a good game for a lot of people, since a common design philosophy is eliminating player steps - the player has to be engaged at all times, having a vast open planet of nothing is RULE #1 NONO. But when losing that, we lose that expansive feeling and the power it brings with it. Made me really disheartened when I first played Mass Effect 2 (after media blackout) and realized it traded in its soul for a punchier story/game. Which I ultimately grown to love and think its a fantastic game that I'd recommend, but it never filled that void left. Andromeda looked like it could try and fill that, which it did in some regard, but ultimately didn't get anything else right. With a game like Death Stranding doing decently, I hope that shows that there is room for big Triple A titles that rely on whats not there as much as what is.

Being able to show off my game on a big stage and then experiencing the energy from the show was always a huge draw. It’s really devastating to me to lose this thing that I knew for most of my life. I really hope Geoff is the savior and brings back some of the spectacle that made games feel special... Thread Which Challenger Pack in the Smash Ultimate Fighters Pass is your favorite?
- 8.2/10 : Never played Persona, but my wife is super into it and was excited that this character can represent that franchise, but didn't mean TOO much to me. - 6.2/10 : I feel like playing Joker it's like he's not that fun/powerful when he's not in his "Persona mode" and when he gets in his persona mode he's almost too powerful and odd feeling? His moves aren't super interesting either and his final smash is lackluster... - 2/10 : Yea, really didn't move a face muscle when he was shown, I like the multiple skins for him so that was somewhat interesting - 8.2/10 : He has a pretty unique feeling moveset and the Mana gauge thing is interesting although somewhat confusing? Trying to remember his abilities from the selection menu is equally as fantastic/frustrating. His final smash is probably the worst final smash out of any character (in terms of flashiness) - 9.85/10 : Definitely one of my top wants for a character in Smash since the N64 era, love Banjo!! - 6.5/10 : His moveset feels a bit lacking in what could have made him a more interesting character, his Bomb feels useless at times and his Kazooie gun feels cumbersome. He's kind of a Side Special character, but then you run out of Gold Feathers and you are like, aight... his final smash is also pretty lame. - 4.2/10 : Having a character from this game (I'm not confident to say Final Fight or whatever its name) was interesting, but was never into that franchise so didn't really care too much.- 5/10 : Just feels like an average fighting character to me, not much to say.- 1.5/10 : lol what...- We'll see, looks somewhat interesting? But pretty derivative. Not sure why I spent the time to do this, but felt compelled to at the moment. Honestly my favorite DLC character is Piranha plant, the most interesting by far with a more interesting final smash than anyone else.

Nice post OP, really liked reading this. I think it is an incredibly interesting discussion because it falls in-line with the Superman dilemma; Your source material is outwardly against game mechanics because of the over-powered nature of their devices. It's very hard to stop Superman from getting wherever he wants to get to and same goes with a lightsaber. But games have to make concessions in order to achieve this balance.Respawn has addressed this (in the most recent trailer it is evident).

You wont ever really get correct, "Plasma sword" combat until a game outside of the Star Wars genre does a Plasma Sword. But you will get proper lightsabers that behave like they do in the Fantasy that is Star Wars, which is different to scientific fact. That's always been the issue with making Star Wars things, it was never a franchise set in scientific realism, it has always been fantasy. So you have two camps of thought that conflict with each other, "a REAL lightsaber would do X" but that is not correct to what it is... it's a fantasy weapon used to depict fantasy encounters in a way the story-teller wants it to.

Thread What is the most unfulfilling game you played?
Recently, probably Read Dead Online. I want to like it so bad, but the thing great about Rockstar games and Red Dead especially is the character interactions, the feeling of being a character in this world. When you have a bunch of fuckin' The Purge cowboy lite mute's running around, it really does not feel like I'm living in this Western.Oh god this instantly came to me as well. It's like an old friend you havent seen in a long time they are finally returning to have a meal with you. And then they spend the entire dinner talking about some obscure anime you don't care about then end the dinner by flipping the table and making you pay for it all. Such a disappointment.

I feel like you heavily underemphasize the power of context, bias and personal experiences that weight into the MOST subjective medium in the world. Yea but, yall are the ones also that didn't want items that actually affected or enhanced the game in anyway, so developers pushed away from that line of thinking and just put it into cosmetics that have very little impact on the game itself and are pricing them in a way that takes into account running an entire F2P game, ramping up an entire team to provide free content till the end of the games run. Yea it's not perfect, but acting like its some predatory act that is taking advantage and ruining lives is so disingenuous. It could be better and they are taking strides to make it better, even the event being criticized is being changed to be better. And it's funny how people are criticizing the lack of value behind paying for a single skin, when that's all I've ever heard gamers want, is for the pay items not to be overly valuable so if you decide you don't want to spend money you wont be disappointed as a non paying customer. Shouldn't all this just justify yourself in not paying to play the game, instead of complaining it's not giving you enough?

Thread Apex Legends developers spark outrage after calling gamers “dicks”, “ass-hats”and “freeloaders”
So I guess I don’t understand the alternative? I’m assuming you think just the existence of f2p mp games are predatory. So what is the alternative? There are a lot of people that really love Apex, just NOT making it would be really disappointing. So charging a base price? You couldn’t charge $60 for a mp only br game. So $40? But no other Br game is paid to play, so you’ll surely be dead by now if you did that. So you copy the models out there already? But now you have to charge for thing piece meal, which becomes “predatory” no matter what... so what do you do? Price it so that all cosmetics in the game are total to $40? But then you have the majority of players buying 1-2 skins paying $1-2. How is that sustainable? I definitely think $18 is way too much, but I feel most people that wouldn’t buy a $18 skin wouldn’t buy a $10 skin. Which is what that dev was saying... Who knows though. This is all so esoteric and superficial. My dream would be to have a like town hall where devs and gamers could just talk about shit, I hate all the arguing.

Thread Apex Legends developers spark outrage after calling gamers “dicks”, “ass-hats”and “freeloaders”
I think it all started when some gamers started “calculating” it all out and determining the “full price” when in reality it’s most likely much different than that. Yes, if you buy every skin ever it costs: $472747 but the majority of players buy 1-3 skins at most: for their fav char and fav gun, regardless of price. So being a free game you have to have the price match that. I’ve heard people say, “$20 for a skin! That’s like an entire witcher expansion!!” But you for sure know if Cdpr was to release their Witcher expansion for free and then a $20 Gerald with a hat skin, players would be praising them for being so generous.

Kind of agree for myself, I feel when I play most indie-games I get what they are going for in the first 5-10 minutes and don't expect any surprises, just because of the nature of making a game on a tiny budget, you can't really invest time in radically shifting or having huge surprises 5-10 hours into the game. I tend to find myself thinking, this game is really interesting I wonder what it'd be like as a full production with a full budget. ect. ect. But that's also just the nature of my business I guess. Hell no, as a developer I love working on them. Because you basically have a locked off platform where you are trying to squeeze everything out of it and as long as it runs well you can keep pushing it. Multiplatform is a pain because sometimes even if its running well, you have to drag out things that might be too expensive for lower end PC's or older consoles. Or just in general to be better safe than screwed. That's why most platform exclusives tend to look better at release, whereas multiplatforms tend to look a bit worse.

Thread Dunkey - Game Critics (Part 2) - It's actually about the gaming community
That's more because there was so much garbage in the 80's/90's, that the whole scale HAD to be used. I think a lot of modern day gamers don't understand that for a game to even be playable from start to finish without some game breaking bug that would never get patched was an accomplishment. Let alone any cohesion with the game mechanics at all, every game having brand new controls that you'd have to suffer with, lack of support or any progression systems. ect. ect. We all remember the very few exceptional titles that were the cream of the crop, but it wasn't the entire picture. So we definitely still have that metric of; if a game is actually playable and functional it is at least a 6/10. It just so happens that most games out now are very much playable and generally well polished. These are not films that can be viewed objectively, there are still a lot of miraculous systems that have to work together to even function AS a game.

Nobody agrees on anything I do like Murray's quote that people will notice the issues, but wont ever have decent solutions. But that's generally the case that we KNOW what the issues are, it's generally seeing if it matters or not (that's the hardest part). Even if you were to ignore all Triple A games (Which I still think are by far the best they've been), you have a vast array of Indie Titles that fit every category you could possibly want. This is something that is absolutely great, not having to learn a new control scheme or ways to play a game everytime you pick up a new title. But then it definitely creates a feeling of familiarity and "samieness" to every title, which is a bummer. Honeslty don't know if there is an answer. If a Triple A shooter was to switch it up and make like LEFT stick Aiming and the Face Buttons movement, gamers would riot. EVEN if after 15+ hours of gameplay it actually allows for more interesting mechanics than the traditional layout.

Thread Xbox E3 | Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Announced, Coming 2020
There are probably articles around that explain it better than I. But it was like, you select which Episode you want and then you are sent out into space in a "hub" sort of flying area. You see the planets from that episode in the distance and you can fly to them (fairly quickly), as the demoer was approaching Tatooine (Was playing Ep6), a Star Destroyer appeared and started firing on the Millenium Falcon he was piloting. Then you see some markers on the planet itself and can choose which to fly down to, once you fly close enough it transitions into a cinematic of you landing. So not like No Man Sky, but close-ish. And for a Lego game I was pretty blown away.

Ab-so-Lutely. It's astonishing that this thing came together. Looked as good as it does, does as much as it does, is as interactive as it is, is as advanced as it is. All the while having a compelling story and cast, where you can remember like 15+ characters that all have their unique personalities and are all so interesting. And taking a first-take "Boring generic stale character" Arthur Morgan and turning him into one of the most compelling well thought out game characters in years, surpassing my love for John Marston, is an incredible accomplishment.

I’m honestly absolutely baffled, Pokemon sword and shield looks legit bad, uninspired and too similiar. Yet I feel these games don’t get the scrutiny every other game gets, we have threads breaking down how a game is garbage because the main characters hair is too dithered, yet there is nothing they are doing in this that seems at all redeemable and yet people are hyped. I’d be fine if it was not the highest grossing franchise of all time, but its inexcusable at this point. I love love Pokemon, it just bums me out that we are still stuck in the same formula. Same sounds, same transitions and cameras, same type of formula, graphically/artistically very uninspired, animation very unappealing. I was just hoping for the Breath of the Wild pokemon moment... I feel like I’m crazy for not being happy with it.

So at the very least though, would good visuals, sound and animation ruin that in anyway? Even at the most basic of levels? Just cannot understand how they seemingly get a free pass, where if it was any other title there would be a petition by now for them to fix it. And my apologies if I sound like I’m descrediting peoples happiness, I guess I’m legitimately etly trying to understand.

Well, yea I assume so... but a lot of people like the sprites as well, why should you ever change them into 3D Models. And you can have them similar, just bring them into the new era. It just baffles me with the amount of money the Pokemon franchise creates, they cut corners like this and rarely get called out for it. With their budget they should give an option for iconic 8bit sounds or modernized versions.

(Both are definitely Meh tho, I wont be craving them like I do butterbeer at Harry Potter land). When I built my Saber I asked about that, and it was implied that they are just selling it illegally, not neccassarily that actual Jedi are buying them. Thread Sonic the Hedgehog - First Trailer
People love to do this, but a Photoshop paint over is far far different than getting a fully fleshed out rigged character that works for multiple shots, lighting conditions and animation poses. I guarantee there were countless iterations of this Sonic character that resembled more of the classic look, but throughout a production concessions get made and things alter based on certain needs. While the fan-redesign Sonic looks better in this pose in that moment, perhaps for the story they are trying to tell it does not work at all. For example, perhaps they had the skinnier taller legs, but in some shots and motions it did not hold up. Or they tried larger angstier eyes but it didn't allow for emotions in the scenes they set up or lessens the impact when he goes into "angst mode". Or the hands were bigger at one point, but they realized they had to scale them back because they kept getting in the way of the Sonic sex scene. Or through marketing they found that children appeal to different shapes and forms so they skewed it more that way. Not to say this movie wont be garbage, but to say what Sonic "should look like" without being a part of its production is baseless. It looks exactly like it needs to be for the story they want to tell... With all that said though, from what I've seen I'm not a fan of this direction.

Sometimes things don't make the cut and it's nice we can put them back in eventually instead of them being gone for good, but it's never our intention to hold crap back (unless it allows for extra iteration and polish). Also, I don't think there is a game launched that didn't go through massive cuts at some point, and it's always pretty devastating if its something you enjoyed.
