Thread Halloween (2018) Is Extremely Underwhelming
I really enjoyed it, saw it in theaters three times. I didn’t find it scary but I liked the character decisions they made and many of the performances. The Carpenters killed it on the score and there are some great sequences in the film (father + son finding the bus, Michael’s mini killing spree in the suburbs, the babysitter death sequence featuring the funny kid, the motion detector sequence, and the entire Laurie vs Michael showdown). I really can’t wait for the next film. Oh and the first Halloween is my favorite film of all time. I’ve probably watched it 100+ times.

I've been fortunate to receive sizable bonuses at the studios I've worked for, but I know plenty of devs who have not even upon the release of a vastly successful game. Even still, the bonuses often times equate to the same amount, if not a lower amount than what developers should have been paid for the unpaid OT required to ship the game. . If you don't want to support a game because you think the IP creator, company shareholder(s), or creative leadership behind it are bad folks then don't support it. Chances are you ain't doing the developers any harm. No more harm than their superiors are already doing onto them.

Thread TBT to when Naughty Dog casted a white girl doing a accent as a South African black woman and said she was better than actual SouthAfrican black women
Oh, I absolutely get it. The shine these guys get from being involved in a Naughty Dog game is immense. You can argue ND has made Nolan North, Troy Baker, and Ashley Johnson household names (in our industry, at least). But while this was bothersome, I don't find it nearly as egregious as something like GHOST IN THE SHELL where they swapped the ethnicity of its historically Japanese lead over bullshit box office reasons. Truly some "yeah, you colored folks aren't good enough to sell movies, so here's this popular white woman from the Marvel films you like." It was so infuriating to me. There's also another horrible Hollywood example involving Emma Stone, but I forget the name of the movie. I do think those instances are a little different than this ND situation and far more black and white. Again, I hope the next ND joint features a person of color in the lead role. Their games are becoming landmark events and they can really propel careers.

I think it's a bit strange to treat VA the same as IRL acting when it comes to things like this. This isn't even a GHOST IN THE SHELL caliber blunder, considering the model was finalized after she was cast. Ideally, I would have loved for a black VA to get the shine that comes from starring in a ND joint, but I'm not going to kill the studio for . I hope we get a black lead in a ND game. They're games cross over in a way that so few do, so it would be a great look. IW brought Gaz back as a black British dude and they survived. No more excuses in this industry.

It’s not irrelevant, it’s the one way she could argue to be compensated for this. This is a new cover which was cleared by the original artist‘s publisher. They did not use Lotte’s performance, so unless ND was using a rendition with new musical arrangement/lyrics that Lotte created (and that doesn’t to be the case) she isn’t entitled to anything. A lot of bad faith posting in here from folks with no music industry or legal knowledge. Thread Other than graphics, are games today doing anything they couldn't do 10 years ago?
I've got a little time today...You enjoying past titles more is kind of irrelevant. The improvements in technology have been used for vastly more than pretty graphics and that is indisputable. Just because those improvements don't speak to you doesn't mean they aren't a product of technological progression. Can't speak on STALKER series, it's in my pile of shame. I can't speak to how sophisticated any of those systems are and I don't have any insight into how their budget is allocated. I can only speak to the titles and studios that I've worked on/at. The level of sophistication you see in the A.I, the varied array of emotional responses you see from various NPCs are a direct byproduct of memory expansion from last gen to current gen. Peds in GTAV really only had two ways they could respond to any action you took and handful of vocal responses. When you rapidly expand that you have a much more active and lifelike world and then you can design new systems around it. This expansion in Ped behavior allowed a more nuanced WANTED system to work at all.

Thread Other than graphics, are games today doing anything they couldn't do 10 years ago?
Like clockwork... Of course it's the same of game. It's a third-person open world action game, they're not inventing a new . The complexities and subsystems dramatically improve and expand upon the gameplay experience in ways that simply were not possible in the PS2 era. Even the examples the OP suggested wouldn't do what you're demanding of us. Being able to supply your own responses to an A.I in a RPG title wouldn't fundamentally change the nature of that RPG experience, it would expand upon that framework and make it a more complex and immersive experience. VR is the main example from this generation of technology being used to create wholly new experiences and genres we haven't seen before. The leap in number of audio responses we could have NPC respond with from GTAV on PS3/360 to RDR2 on PS4/XBX was so vast and it dramatically boosted how real and lifelike the world was. That was possible due to technology improvements on the hardware.

Thread Other than graphics, are games today doing anything they couldn't do 10 years ago?
GTA III and Red Dead Redemption 2 are staring you dead in your face. But I'm sure someone will get reductionist about it and go "well, RDR2 is just a prettier open world." There are so many underlying systems in these games that were not achievable due to hardware restraints in prior generations. Many of them are in service of greater overall immersion.

Thread Best Combat So Far This Gen?
I really loved the combat in GOD OF WAR (2018). I love the control scheme, the speed, the addition of Atreus, the weapons and magic, the sound cues. It was virtually perfect to me. Simple on first glance but layered and demanding of the player on higher difficulty levels. Of all the elements required to successfully that franchise SSM nailed that one the most. Radically different from the past games and I’d argue vastly superior. That game is a masterpiece. The more I think about it the more I think it may be my favorite of the entire generation.

John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN: A VR Experience. I would love a first-person horror experience that's more of a puzzle game/escape the room than anything. No real combat since there's no fighting Michael Myers (maybe you can find parts in the world to build traps or escape his grips once he catches you). The Friday the 13th game had some of that, I believe. You had to escape Camp Crystal Lake or something? I dig that but a 1st person VR experience with the Carpenters doing the score. I don't need MP, A.I characters would suffice.

Sony’s main aim seems to be ensuring 3D audio is supported at a system level and creating rendering & virtualization systems that make it possible for anyone to experience it without the need for additional hardware, which isn’t the case on PS4. They‘ve dedicated considerable power to audio to ensure that bit-depth and sample rates stay high as we scale up not only the amount of sound sources but the environmental responses for each individual sound. Yes and no. I’m aware...This is a bit more involved than just having a DSP.

For their own games on Games Pass sure they get a cut, but for other studios’s?...it still hasn’t proven to be hugely profitable. What about that do you not understand? For now, sure. They're clearly enticing their users to move in a different direction.

Astonishing work especially for the time. Spielberg hasn’t really fallen off much from a directorial POV. There are some incredible sequences in RPO and Tintin. He’s still a master director. Thread Why do we care about "devaluing games" when it comes to subscription services like Game Pass, but not with used game sales?
Yes and no. The splits are probably different for each project or dev/platform contract, but I doubt they change too much. The value of a game is also sort of set in stone. Base editions of AAA games generally sell for $59.99. If developers don't have a say in how payouts are determined in the streaming era it is likely that the sale certification criteria will be biased to certain types of games. If the powers that be decide to use time played to determine unit equivalent sales that immediately puts games like GONE HOME at a disadvantage compared to service games. Hell, it even puts grander SP games like GOD OF WAR at a disadvantage compared to titles like MODERN WARFARE. In music, the RIAA came together and said "hey, 1 physical album sale is the equivalent to 10 individual song downloads, which is the equivalent to 1500 individual song streams," and artists didn't really blink until streaming took over. Now they're panicking and complaining about awful payouts. This devaluing definitely alters how much time and effort they put into their craft. Why put your heart and soul into music when all the ancillary things are what actually pays your bills? I'm mainly worried about how indie developers will manage in the streaming era. Developers owned by publishers are not exactly exempt but their situation is obviously very different.

Thread NPD analyst Mat Piscatella: The risk of subscription is in the potential devaluation of content
This has happened to every industry that went sub-based before ours, which is why it's important for independent developers to make sure they're getting good deals from the platform holders. This issue will also be exacerbated by streaming: how long does a player have to play for it to count as a sale? How do those time constraints affect smaller, shorter games? Consumers, who don't create art themselves, don't value art very highly to begin with. If platform holders reinforce that with super attractive streaming price points this will only get worse.

First of all, this is mostly about resources. The fact that a lot of y'all double dip is a bonus. Launching a game of this size and scale across three platforms is a tremendous task and things will inevitably slip through the cracks. There are a ton of fixes in the works for MW and a lot of them are specific to the platforms. Rockstar's games have even more moving parts, it simply isn't worth the risk. Rockstar focuses on nailing the console versions first because that is the biggest market by a large margin. The year allows them to launch and polish the console versions and make sure that when PC launches it's in great shape and the online space is firing on all cylinders.

You cannot transfer those attachments to other weapons, but you can recreate a weapon build from a variant you don't possess if you have those exact attachments unlocked. THE WHOLE MOVIE IS BY THE NUMBERS. Nothing but broad strokes and shallow characterization. Phillips, as of late, has been a lowest common denominator storyteller and that approach with this subject matter, which has been explored numerous times by expert craftsmen, is unacceptable. Studio gives you the greenlight to riff off Scorsese for $60M and this is what you deliver? It’s the third act and more specifically the last 30 mins or so.

This film was poorly constructed and plotted. Phoenix did better work in YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE. I didn’t expect much from Phillips, so I did not leave disappointed. The film was not deserving of the chatter surrounding it. Lousy work. EDIT: At the risk of sounding extremely self-righteous (shit, maybe I am) this is the kind of film where when I’m confronted by people who like it, I question if I should find a different line of work.

The Troll fights are generally fine but there seems to be only four types and I'm not sure that's enough variety for how many times you encounter them. My bigger issue is that there is only one finishing animation for every enemy type--that annoys TF outta me. At least in DOOM they were fast and sort of changed depending on angle you approached them, but there definitely needs to be more finishing animations if they're going to keep the Stun & Execute system in there.

Scripting implies that these scenarios wouldn't happen unless coded. It didn't look like there was much of that in the original demo outside of maybe the under the car bit? Someone at ND would have to confirm. The rest of it looked like standard playthrough stuff. Whoever had to play it at ND picked a line that they thought best showcased the game flow. You have to follow it to the T because straying off the path could seriously bjork your playthrough and then you have to start all over again.

Thread The Last of Us Part II Preview Thread
For starters, there is no way to know for sure how your game will look when it ships in terms of fidelity. Development is a balancing act. As you build out your systems and features you’re constantly trying to manage your frame budget, which can be impacted by plenty of things that aren’t tied to visuals. I’ve personally never seen a game get worse looking at either of the studios I’ve worked at. MODERN WARFARE seems to look better with each build. There are artistic changes made at times which will impact a map or level’s appearance, but differences =/= downgrades. In-Engine trailers or even real-time rendered cutscenes tend to look better than moment-to-moment gameplay because a lot of the time they use higher LOD profiles and have bespoke lighting setups that ensure the game looks best. All resources are aligned to make sure whatever the camera is facing looks great. If you were to break camera during one of those UC4 cutscenes and point it in the other direction you may be surprised by what you find (my guess, I haven’t worked at ND).

Why are people still using phrases like “Oscar worthy” as if that institution is or ever was the ultimate barometer of quality? Many of what we now consider the greatest films of all time do not have Oscar wins. Naughty Dog have proven to be highly capable of crafting cinematic narrative experiences in the gaming space. Their work/approach is influential in the AAA games space and indie space where most games approach narrative in dramatically different ways. Many developers have echoed these sentiments. How is this still a debate?

Everyone’s market research team comes to the same conclusions, so you end up with store shelves full of games taking the same damn approach to cover designs. With more games being sold digitally than ever before it’s time to throw away old data about consumer habits. A generic photo of some dude‘s back can’t be what’s moving units on the Xbox Store or PSN.

All this chatter about tropes. If the character writing is up to snuff—there’s nothing to suggest it won’t be— it won’t matter if they go in a derivative direction. You will have bought into the characters to such a degree that you’re not thinking about Twitter talking points. The way people speak about art these days feels like they’re trying to talk themselves into disliking things. People are always gearing up for the worst. I'm in Act 2 now and I'm enjoying it just fine. It's cool because Gears still feels pretty unique in the sense that I can think of many games that like it. I'm not sold on this open level stuff—I didn't like it much in UNCHARTED: LOST LEGACY either—there just isn't much to do between points and it feels like a waste of my time. It seems like developers do this to give them time to hit story beats but that stuff rarely hits for me. I'm not super invested in these characters because I don't think there's much to them. I'm intrigued by Kait's heritage and how she's connected to the Locust and what not, but outside of that not tied to much. I really dig the relic weapons and the general feel of combat. Game Pass is fucking awesome. EDIT: Only on a internet forum do people try to debate points as if "general consensus," isn't a thing that exists in the world, lol.
