They appreciate together but at different scales, since it's all based on percentage. For example, if your $2M house in SF and a$500k house in Idaho both appreciate, say, 10%, the SF house still appreciates way more.

Thread NYT: The number of homes for sale in the USA has plummeted while home prices skyrocket and rents plummet
Oh, okay. Thanks. I should have read the whole thing but just read the pull quotes this time. Anecdotally, I was lucky in that we sold and bought right before the pandemic started (closed escrow last February, so that's how close we cut it), and if we just moved on things even a bit slower, we probably would have put off buying. We moved in May, and it was scary as shit having a bunch of movers in-and-out of our rental and then house all day. It's definitely not an experience I'd recommend for anyone else to try.

Thread Surge of Anti-Asian hate crimes spurs communities to action (People's World article)
I think due to the model minority myth and how some Asian groups are economically better off than most other minorities, there's a notion that our issues aren't real. Because of this, we seem to occupy this weird space where we're kind of an out group for everyone, and because of that, we generally face a different type of racism that's often less overt but still systemic and pervasive. It gets tiring trying to talk about your issues when you feel no one ever listens or cares, and over time you just stop.

Thread Do you favor the protagonist?
I guess this would be mainly pertaining to RPGs where you have multiple party members. Do you find yourself giving the main character all the best gear first or all the stat boost items or anything like that? I find I do, but I've been better about spreading out the love, in case focusing on just one guy bites me in the ass. My thinking is that the main character is more likely to always be your playable character and often has the most balanced stats distribution. I remember when I played Chrono Trigger, Crono always got the tabsand first dibs on the best armor. Or in Wild Arms, Rudy got all the apples and the Sheriff Star. And then both of those throw in parts where the protagonist isn't playable for a while, and things are harder than they could be. The worst I got was the first time I played Earthbound. I killed off all the party members except Ness so that he could get 4x EXP. That let me reach level 99 well before Magicant, and then I missed out on the major stat boost from beating that because Ness couldn't level up anymore. Whoops. Do you do this, too, or is it just me? I guess this could manifest in other genres, too, like maybe you always pick Ryu in Street Fighter or always choose the character defaulted to player 1.

Yeah, it's way faster, but I find that there's pretty much no appreciable difference for most real world use cases--certainly not for things like browsing websites and checking emails, and even mobile games run pretty much the same--between my Pixel 5 (which isn't even the most powerful Android phone) and my wife's iPhone 11 Pro Max. The only place where I really feel that, yes, her phone is more powerful is shooting high frame rate video, but even that is mitigated by my camera taking arguably better-looking photos.Yeah, this is where I think the real difference is. Thread Advice for forming an Agile team?
I had a feeling that could be the case, but given this, one challenge you will face is that you're going to come up against competing priorities--doubly so if you and your peer PM are both still acting as project managers. This is kind of why I would suggest only one of you is the product owner, so you don't bash heads together trying to both get things prioritized higher, and removing the higher manager from the team entirely will allow him to become a tiebreaker if it's unclear what's actually the most important. The ScrumMaster, then, can focus on execution and removing impediments for the team. EDIT: Oh, yeah. One other thing: You should ideally put into your working agreement what criteria a new story or task would have to meet in order to be so important that it can interrupt a sprint. Like, this kind of stuff should be things like P0 bugs that affect live users and fires so hot that they could burn the whole business down and things like that. Otherwise, things that are kind of important and are just things people want sooner can generally wait for the next sprint.

Thread Advice for forming an Agile team?
Really bad idea to have a manager act as product owner, and also bad to hybridize project manager and ScrumMaster. But if it's unavoidable, I think the most important thing is to have a clean, prioritized backlog and a strong working agreement, where you can establish your commitments and definitions of done. You actually have enough people to form two scrum teams, sort of, if the manager on top is the PO for both.

This is not a chargeback, as the transaction never goes through. A chargeback is the payer requesting a refund (usually due to a failure of service) after the transaction already went through.

I'm a bit older than the demographic in the article, though, so it was more the last recession that hit harder for me.Last recession, a lot of my friends and I (born 1984, mostly) lamented how we'd be doing so much better if we were about a decade older. I mean, that would still probably be true, and now it's also looking like we'd be even more fucked if we were about a decade younger, too.

I have a Steelseries Arctis 7 headset, and it works well. I would not recommend Bose if you have anyone else living with you, as its mic picks up everything (my wife has a QC25, and she had to switch to just use her Airpods because all her co-workers could hear me). The Arctis 7 mic is much better at isolating just your voice.

Bosch is a brand I know and trust. From windshield wipers to dishwashers, almost every Bosch product I've owned has been great, and it's a brand I would go for over others if I don't know too much about the brands available for something I need. Except my Bosch washing machine kind of sucks: weird presets, low capacity, unthorough rinsing, an alert that never stops once a load is done, and generally user unfriendly. It's honestly among the worst washing machines I've ever used--more in line with what one would expect from a bargain brand like Electrolux (more like Electrosucks) than from Bosch. I definitely didn't expect that, but I guess no one can be great at everything. Do you have any examples like that? Thread Do you receive a Christmas bonus from your employer?
Not for Christmas, no. Our bonuses come after the fiscal year and are factored into our comp, so they get paid out around June and can be pretty hefty. The amount is based a combination of how well the company, your business unit, your studio, etc. do--the distribution of which is based on your role (so Andrew Wilson, for example, gets his bonus 100% based on how the whole company does) times your target times your performance modifier--maybe plus some stock. I'm not very senior, so my bonus target is relatively low, but it still comes out to a decent amount overall. For the holidays, we usually get two holiday parties (one for the kids, since they can't go to the big one), plus whatever your studio does on top, plus a week shutdown that's paid. This year, we're doing a remote party, which is going to be interesting, and they're also sending every employee a gift, plus some food and alcohol. I'm looking forward to it.

I think it's important to separate power and proficiency. Metal bending is a skill: once you learn how to do it, even average earthbenders are able to pick it up. Blood bending is also a skill but seems like it's gated by having enough power, hence the full moon "requirement" (remember that the moon just boosts all water bending and doesn't actually impart additional knowledge or anything), which Yakone's family circumvents by likely just being strong enough to do it.

Thread How do you feel about religion in super hero universes?
In DC, not only does God exist, but there are also characters who've had direct contact with Him--such as Lucifer and The Spectre--and in turn have also had direct contact with regular characters. Characters have died and resurrected, having experienced the afterlife first hand, and some have even visited Heaven and Hell personally. So yeah, in a world like that, you bet your ass it makes sense to be religious.

With Supernatural finally coming to an end and The Boys rolling forward at full steam, I've come to realize that I'll pretty much watch any show that involves Eric Kripke. I even liked Revolution. Do you have any TV showrunners whose involvement alone is enough to entice you to watch? I have two: Kripke, as mentioned above, and Vince Gilligan because I loved both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Close third and fourth are probably Jon Favreau (who just have produced enough TV content quite yet for me) and David Simon (because of The Wire, but I didn't bother to stick with Treme or watch the porn one. I'd still be at least interested with just his name though). On the cartoon side, Greg Weisman. Maybe Dave Filoni, but I feel the latter is more that I'm watching more for Star Wars than for him. What about you?

I was a senior in high school. I got in the car to drive to school shortly before 8 AM (west coast), turned on KIIS FM, and heard Rick Dees say, "if you tuned in for a show where we tell jokes and have a lot of fun today, this ain't it." And then he said what happened, and the day got super surreal from there. At school, every class had the TV on, and that's all we did. Even my AP Stats teacher, who said he never watches TV, had it on and was glued to the screen. Literally days earlier, I'd just gotten back from attending a summer program in New York, and we stayed pretty much right between the two towers. It was crazy lucky that I wasn't still there.

In OoT, I fought Ganon for over two hours, hitting him over and over again with the Biggoron Sword. I was talking with a friend a while back about why people keep thinking that know so much about the games industry, and I think part of the problem is that we have a lot of roles that share titles--but not necessarily responsibilities--with roles in the film industry. This applies to QA across the board and not just to western companies. Japanese companies, in fact, pay just as poorly and even worse in Japan (which surprised me when I first learned about that some years ago), but of course a better social safety net in Japan helps there. The thing about testers is that the basic, entry-level job is "unskilled" (not in the sense that it takes no skill to do it but in the sense that there are few/no prerequisite job requirements) and seen by many as the easiest entry point to the industry--which it is, but what they don't tell you is that you will hit another wall trying to get out of QA, and this one is much harder to pass. As such, the there is always a glut of enthusiastic and overqualified candidates in the labor pool, which is going to bottom out wages. But yeah, that being the case, you can name any game company, and more than likely their testers will be equally shittily paid as any tester at any other company.

Side story: once I went to this southern fried chicken place that was reviewed well by everyone but black people. It sucked. Miele and Bosch, both German brands, don't dry too well (often they don't even have heated drying and instead just blast your dishes with a hot rinse and then open up a bit to let evaporation take care of drying) in my experience, but they make up for it by being durable and quiet. My current Miele even has a setting for plastics, where it keeps the temperature at around 110 F, which is super nice. In terms of whether you need to pre-rinse, I think it really comes down to your detergent. Personally, I like Cascade Platinum.

Thread Facebook plans to possibly shift to 50% remote workforce in 5 years, will re evaluate pay based on location of workers who move in 2021
Typing it all in caps doesn't make this sentiment not stupid. Facebook is a global company. If they want to outsource, they will (and likely already do). They aren't going to outsource core talent.

Is there a much high quality talent out there? And if there is why wouldn't they negotiate for higher salaries than that? Moreover, what do you think happens to a local economy when there's an influx of SF salaries?

Thread IGN: Why and how video game leaks happen, and the mayhem it causes for devs
The thing about leaks is that all of them set expectations. At the extreme end, these can then lead to financial implications due to the way finance is done (which I personally don't really understand). At a higher level, these expectations could also be detrimental if, say, they are the expectations of investors or licensors. But at the lower dev level, though, it mainly just feels shitty. It also makes it harder to pivot because now players have expectations.

Thread What are some games this gen you didn't expect to love but did?
Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia It's a mobile gacha game, but holy shit, I like it so much! It's basically FF Smash Bros., and almost every character is there--from the obvious Cloud and Lightning to esoteric characters like Dark Knight Cecil to dream party members that we never had like General Leo to even the bad guys like Kefka and Garland. It also adapts the JRPG genre to mobile controls really well and doesn't try to do wonky shit, like using virtual joysticks for movement and shit like that.

Thread What tools are essential to own?
I just unjammed a shredder by pulling out the jam with needle-nose pliers. I'm not really a maintenance or DIY type of guy, but I'm fortunate enough that I can afford to buy tools even if they just offer a marginal advantage, so I now own quite a few. That said, I find myself coming back to the same ones for most jobs:I don't know that that last one is a tool, per se, but I use it a lot. These are the tools I use all the time and would consider essential to own. What about you?

My 2XL is not running so hot anymore, but I'm still holding out to see if Google will release a model with more than 128 GB of non-expandable storage. If they don't, I'll probably have to switch brands. EDIT: Part of the reason my phone runs like shit now is because its storage is almost full. I don't understand why Google thinks people don't need storage capacity.

"Blue" means nothing. As I said in another thread, California is full of RINOs and DINOs, and their actual policy positions are all over the place. It's because Republicans generally aren't viable here, so conservatives have to masquerade as Democrats (and you will even see shit like Democrats being endorsed by Trump).

I got gluten-free soy sauce from one of these. I didn't even know the regular ones had the glutens, so thanks, ethnic aisle! Also, is funny to go to the American aisle at Asian grocery stores and see, like, ketchup and Doritos.

I think anyone can be great at coming any type of ethnic cuisine (and I'm fact I used to joke that Mexicans are the best at all of them because they comprise the kitchen staff of almost every place). The problem arises when being great at it gets to the chef's head, and then you see shit like Zimmern acting like he's some sort of authority while calling others horseshit.

Thread People Being Super Rude When Debating On Forums
Yeah, I'm not the smartest.Yeah, I think a lot of times, it's more important to be compelling than correct. You just can't bullshit much, and people will think you're great at what you do. On here, though, I usually see this phenomenon play out when people think longer posts are stronger arguments. It's like we're back in ninth grade, where we have minimum-word limits on our essays. And I don't know about you, but what makes a stronger argument than five paragraphs of seven sentences and three concrete details apiece, amirite?

Mid-30s is when Death starts creeping around your friends and family. Like, in your 20s, you'd see a high school acquaintance on Facebook and be like, oh what's he up to. Mid-30s is when some of those start to turn into funeral announcements.

Crash Bandicoot for sure. It hasn't been exclusive for a long time now, but he's still the closest we ever got to PlayStation's Mario. Ace Attorney games on non-DS devices feels weird, too, even though mobile is arguably the ideal device for that type of game.

I've been seeing tons of ads for this, and it's honestly looking more and more compelling whenever I see it. Most recently I saw one where Penn & Teller are teaching magic, and I turned in the audio for once because Teller was actually talking. But some of the other ones, like cooking with Gordon Ramsay or Thomas Kincaid, sound amazing, too. Does anyone here have a subscription? How is it?

Maybe if they do an episode on special effects. The first is about directors, and the second producers. I always get a kick out of seeing Giancarlo Esposito just talking a a real person. Every role I've ever seen him do is stoic bad guy, so seeing him smile and just talk like a regular guy is so weird.

Yeah, in the mid/late-2000s, they introduced premium add-on items, like edamame, wasabi peas, and chicken, for an additional cost. That failed to catch on (unsurprisingly), but the reason I mention it is because many of those items stuck around as regular options.

Yeah, but that one reused a ton of assets, including having basically interchangeable, generic Pykes and Mandalorians. It also had very little in terms of choreography and not much in terms of settings.

Thread Star Wars: The Clone Wars (February 21 on Disney+) |OT| Somehow, this show returned
It's so clear they spent the lion's share of their budget on this arc. I imagine that's why they had to go with near-done and/or sucky arcs earlier on this season.

Thread Who else feels Disney+ was half baked
It's really different from Netflix, for sure, which constantly pumps and dumps content, as opposed to drip-releasing one or two new shows at a time. I feel like the Netflix model is better for acquiring and retaining audience. At the same time, though, Disney+ content is supposed to never leave the service once it's there, right? It seems like, over time, the catalogue will be a lot more compelling.

Thread The way we talk about China
Hey, so not too call you out, specifically, but this is the type of post that, while it doesn't exhibit any over racism, is still subtly racist and "other"-ing. Check out the part I bolded. Its implication reads like Chinese people are brainwashed and/or too oblivious to realize what like is really like in their home country. Here's a quick trick: replace any mention of Asians with the appropriate word that refers to black people and see if it still sounds okay. If it sounds like something sketchy to say about black people, it's sketchy to say about anyone else, too.

It's kind of fucked up that HuffPo can still just print "chink" right in the title like that. That being allowed implicitly shows that the seriousness of using that word is lower than for some others. Like, imagine if it was the n-word but spelled out, right up to, in bold.

Thread What are some interesting abandoned plot lines in TV shows? (SPOILERS)
Breaking Bad was initially going to kill off Jesse in season 1. Supernatural never intended to feature Bobby Singer; they just brought him in to fill in for another actor who wasn't available. Also for Supernatural, Castiel was supposed to just have one character arc for a few episodes before being written out. Arrow didn't intend for Felicity to be a main character. All except for one of these ended up improving the shows.

I'm either case, it looks like the morality rate for the 0-59 cohort is about 1.7%, which is 17,000 per million. Numbers like that aren't really easy to visualize, but that's roughly a third of the seats at Anaheim Stadium. So imagine going to an Angels game, and every third person there is dead.
