Thread Rivals Direct 2 - 3D Rivals of Aether in development, Definitive Edition details, new Tether mode, more
The fake Direct had such an earnest feeling to it, it made me more excited to try their game. Been a hot minute since I last played. Excited to see what the turn based RPG is, and just what the 3D game will be. I imagine it'll just be even more Smash Bros., which is fine, but it'd be fun if they went Power Stone with it or something.

I have to imagine Bandai Namco is funding another Ni no Kuni at some point at least, but yeah in-house Level-5 appears to be a complete mess They need to work on a new IP without focusing so much on the potential licensing. In the meantime port up older games like Fantasy Life, or something.

Thread So, Paper Mario Switch is rumored to return back to the series roots (64 and TTYD), what are your expectations for it?
I didn't like the overly self referential writing in Color Splash so I'm a little hesitant they'll do that again. A lot of that can be fixed by simply having a lot of unique characters and a fresh setting, though. I'd still rather they move on from the Paper Mario brand in general though and do a whole new aesthetic for the RPGs. I love Paper Mario but I'm fine with it ending.

Thread Ni No Kuni 2-- as bad as they say?
My issue with it was the lack of polish. It was really confusing how many lines weren't voiced at all, even ones that were dubbed in the trailers. The first game felt a lot more "complete" by comparison. Difficulty seems like a major complaint too, but one that doesn't really resonate with me since I don't mind a mindless hack'nslash from time to time. I keep meaning to go back to it, I got the special edition with the music box and everything, but it's not super compelling.

The Cold War Would be a drastic departure in terms of gameplay but at this point I wouldn't be opposed to it incorporating guns and the like, so long as they lean way more heavily into the espionage side of things. Also somehow incorporate the space race, that'd be an awesome setpiece.

So long as JK is relatively hands-off with it and it leans heavily into the story, dialogue, and characters A lot of it seems "too good to be true" with how free it is, to the extent I'm worried NPCs will fall into simplistic archetypes and not have developed stories of their own. I want full on Persona-style time and social management.

In terms of scores and final thoughts, no, that's pretty silly and just dates a review to a specific time and place (even more so than usual) But I think it's more than fine for a reviewer to mention "given recent events, some players may feel uncomfortable seeing the pandemic unfold in-game". Arguing against that isn't too far removed from getting mad a youtube video has content warnings.

Would be awesome if that was the intent but yeah it's frustratingly easy for it to be denied/explained away as something else. That alone makes it weak as representation, IMO. It leans more towards Dumbledore rather than Mr. Ratburn, as it were. Obviously they shouldn't have gone the complete opposite direction and stereotyped them, but there are ways to make it clearer without using the word "boyfriend". Have him use the heart "emotion" effect when he talks about him, say they live together, something like that. Hell, even something like "we might come to [Island Name] for our honeymoon/a vacation!" would spell it out. At least the game will receive multiple updates, maybe they'll host an event together or something where they'll have cute pet names for each other, that'd be cute.

Amano artwork is nice but I've never felt it really accurately represented the games (the sole exceptions basically being Dissidia, certain enemies, and most of the dragoons) Never understood the OG Pac-Man art that gives him giant red eyeballs and feet, like some weird mutant Q-Bert And this is sort of recursive but whoever made the 90's Sonic cartoons never saw Robotnik in the games or his official artwork, apparently

I don't really care if other people do it but it's one of those things where I feel you're just kinda ruining the experience for yourself For me AC is about chilling out and taking things slow, sure you might miss some things but that's life and it's an incentive to keep coming back to your town every year. Thread How Arendelle Became the Worst Kingdom Hearts World (Video)
I felt Tangled's world captured the spirit of things better and recreated the story in a more satisfying way (even though it led to massive plotholes like Flynn leaving Rapunzel on the boat for no reason at all) Frozen is probably the best example of Kingdom Hearts' tendency to have its Disney worlds just be "the original story, but with Sora, Donald, and Goofy off screen the whole time". Nothing carried any weight at all - at least with Rapunzel and Flynn you got to see their character arcs, meanwhile Elsa appears after leaving the castle, we barely learn her backstory, and it all gets resolved with zero input from the party. Visually it was super boring too, to the extent they had to throw in a rando ice palace just to make sure it wasn't grey snowy mountain tops the entire time. Frozen has plenty of creative locales (Arendelle, the place all those rock trolls live, the cabin areas, the ice lakes), so it was even more confusing. But yeah almost all of them were kinda boring. Gameplay wise they were probably the best yet, but there was no real incentive to do anything in them besides follow the plot path.

Thread Sony going after Dreams creations that use Nintendo IP at the request of Nintendo
it is a bit silly but I think it might encourage creativity in a way that's more beneficial for the consumer and the creators Like, imagine some teen makes a really good 3D platformer with their own creations, then later in life they adapt that into their own game. They might not get that creative spark if they just recreated Bob-Omb Battlefield for the 20th time.

Thread Confusing retrograde decisions in a series
Wind Waker's credits were aight, you didn't really need updates on the lives of the NPCs like you did in OoT and Majora's Mask, in fact I'd argue it works better given how the entire ending is setting up a blank slate with limitless possibilities Breath of the Wild, now there's a game with terrible credits As for my own examples - removing most of Blathers' dialogue in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. It was streamlining in the worst way possible, stripping one of my favorite characters of basically all their personality in favor of bland wikipedia entries within the museum itself. At least New Horizons is fixing that, seemingly. Similarly there's the removal of most story elements in Mario Galaxy 2. It's a better game, but it's nowhere near as "magical" as the first. Almost feels more like an extremely polished mod pack for the original at times.

Thread Was "The Road to PS5" a marketing blunder?
I knew what it was going in, and pretty much got to see exactly what I expected But still, I don't think Sony should have hyped it up in the way they did through mainstream channels. Sure you could argue it was on the viewers for expecting too much, but it was still very dryly delivered, and we have no idea what the company's roadmap even is going forward. Even if there was a simple "we plan to reveal more in April/May" it would have gone down a lot better. Doesn't help that Microsoft has been delivering much the same info in a much more successful manner, deliberately targeting hardware enthusiasts and letting the important bits trickle down to the masses naturally through word of mouth. In the end though I don't think the PS5 has been damaged by this, it was just a very silly call.

Just played Green Hill Zone from 1 because the rest of the game don't hold up too great. Really want to play an open world game, since my RPG quota is about to be filled out by Persona and FFVII Remake, but very undecided. Tempted to try RDR2 again but the last time I tried to play that I wound up getting exhausted by the very idea of video games. And I've completely forgotten what I was doing in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, so I'll probably replay that from the start in a few months. Breath of the Wild is an absolute must From that list I'd say get Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2. That covers a pretty wide variety of things to do. Swap out Mario with Animal Crossing depending on whether you want a forever game. But if you've missed Nintendo games since the Wii and you think you'll be playing with friends locally, Mario Kart 8 and Smash are very strong options. Thread Rumor: E3 about to be cancelled, official announcement coming soon (Update: Officially Confirmed)
I still love the atmosphere of E3, but in recent years it's become increasingly apparent that having every major announcement appear during a one week period in June isn't the best way to go about things, for both the consumer and the publishers There's the competition for attention, the press conference hours that basically put the middle finger up at all of Europe, it's pretty expensive to go in person even if you are a member of the press, developers are pressured to get demos out for games that are still months away from being "done"... Combine that with the ESA messing up big time in a variety of ways and it's not exactly appealing. And things like Nintendo Directs, PSX, even the likes of PAX have proven that people will still tune in and watch your announcements even if they're not at E3. If anything I imagine the analytics show it's to do just that. So yeah, while it'll be a shame to lose "Gamer Christmas", I think it's much more enjoyable and logical to have everything spread out over the entire year and I won't really miss it at the end of the day.

Great, but too long: Assassin's Creed Odyssey. I loved it when I played it but it's exhausting after a point and the main plotline doesn't feel cohesive enough to really inspire you to keep playing. Will return to it one day, but I dread restarting something I already poured 40 hours into. Too short: The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls. The only game in recent years I've managed to power through in a single afternoon. It's a classic Game Boy title though so it's very excusable, but I'd love a sequel that develops on its concepts. Just right: Judgment, though I don't 100% the Yakuza games. Yoshi's Island 1, DS, and New Island happen (the latter retcons the first game's ending for no reason which is very silly, while DS basically confirms the green Yoshi throughout the rest of the series isn't the same as the green Yoshi in the YI series, instead being born after Mario. Deep Mario lore.) Balloon Fight is Mario's teenage years don't @ me Mario moves out of the weird mushroom house and goes to New Donk City to work as a plumber The events of Donkey Kong '94 happen, Mario, Cranky and DK become amicable friends, Mario goes back to the Mushroom Kingdom because Pauline wants him to follow his heart or something Super Mario Bros. 1 happens, and everything else just plays out chronologically Geographically everything is as it is in Super Mario Odyssey, DK island is just too small to be seen from space and Sarasaland is next to Toastarena or something. Diamond CIty is on the same continent as New Donk. Donkey Kong Jr. is a dark timeline where Mario gave into his darker impulses and every RPG and spin-off is an alternate timeline because why not. My guess is Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Toadsworth, Wario, Waluigi, Rosalina, Koopa Troopa, Cat Mario, Cat Peach, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Bowser Jr. Bowser would probably be a Big Fig as part of a set a la Thanos, Hulk etc.

Then you have Subsistence, which has the third person camera and a bunch of extras, but is SD, 4:3 and chugs a bit IIRC. After that was the ports to PS3/360, which bumped up the resolution, aspect ratio and framerate but cut a few features like the Ape Escape minigame and the bizarro dream sequence. It also can't handle Volgin's lightning effects frame-rate wise. Finally there's MGS3D on the 3DS, which looks kinda crap despite improving the face models, yet has the much more modern-feeling MGS4/Peace Walker crouch mechanics. It's debateable whether or not these break the difficulty, though (Photo Camo definitely does) Ideally we'd get a new version with all the HD updates, but with the old extras being spliced back in, plus the option to use the 3DS crouch mechanics

I wanna say this happened pretty shortly after Paper Mario hit the Wii U Virtual Console. I wouldn't say I disliked New Leaf but I think it was very... Average. I think in general I expected more from it, and I also kinda hated how eventually it just devolved into constantly grinding the island and barely paying attention to aspects like the other villagers. That combined with relatively meh events, the bland city street aspect, and extremely boring museum collection thanks to Blathers losing his personality made the experience just kinda unenticing after a couple of months, at least for me. New Horizons seems to be fixing most everything though, the only big question is the variety in villager dialogue and interactions. It actually feels like an evolution in a lot of ways, New Leaf was more of an aggressive refinement.

Can tell you right now that most of the fans of that game don't want modern Square Enix to remake it, even if they say they do Personally I'd like to see I - VI get the Octopath Traveler treatment at most, while VIII and maaaybe IX get the FFVII Remake approach. Fundamentally though I'd rather they just focus on new games and slightly gussied up ports - FFVII was the only game I'd argue aged poorly, and thus it deserved a remake. The others? Not so much.

The common consensus behind Sonic 3 & Knuckles' omission from modern porting projects like Sega Ages and Sega Genesis Classics is that the Michael Jackson estate could sue Sega for using the tracks that were composed by him for the original Genesis release. Last year, , it was confirmed that they weren't the "true" original songs, instead replacing tracks that the general public had assumed were created for the later PC port. For a comparison, here's the OG Genesis version of Ice Cap: and the PC/beta version: Presuming Sega would be fine re-releasing the game with the latter soundtrack, would you still pick it up? Or is the Genesis soundtrack integral to the experience for you? EDIT: I shoulda mentioned this originally but it wouldn't effect every song in the game -

Honestly the way the remake is putting more emphasis on the war with Wutai early on is great - it was barely mentioned in the original despite it essentially being a world war. I also feel it's more relevant to the modern world to have a government manipulating the narrative with terrorists to justify furthering their war effort. A remake shouldn't be a 1:1 version of the original IMO, the only thing that'll make me annoyed is if Nojima brings in that ridiculous FFX connectionFor what it's worth I doubt anyone at Shinra is gonna tell Reeve about Sector 1, chances are it'll stay between the president and Heidegger. I do think they'll find out, though, but I still think there's more than enough "blame" on Avalanche for them to feel guilty. They might just think that they kicked the hornet's nest and were planning on damaging the livelihoods of regular civilians, regardless of whether they were directly responsible for this one instance in the end.

Barret's Avalanche division is pretty much set up to appear incompetent in the original, yeah. They're running with barely any members, they only managed to get anything done after hiring Cloud, and as plenty of people have quoted, The remake is leaning into that by referencing other Avalanche cells, Jessie even mentions the fact theirs doesn't have the best contacts with "headquarters" (or something like that) Avalanche in FFVII is basically the whole Rebel Alliance from Star Wars except they don't shy away from the fact a bunch of randos working out of slums aren't exactly well equipped to take down an entire government without causing a lot of problems and civilian casualties. Barret realizing he needs to change tack is kinda his character arc.

Oh I meant gun metaphorically, as in Avalanche staging the attack in the first place is the only reason the explosion happens. This made me realize those deaths might be even sadder from the player's perspective. Jessie and Biggs might end up blaming themselves for something that wasn't entirely their fault, presuming the rest of the party doesn't find out till later. Hell, imagine Barret's breakdown once it comes out.

I think a lot of it will still work - Avalanche kicking the hornet's nest in the first place is still the reason Sector 7 gets destroyed, and they're still fundamentally the cause of the Sector 1 explosion. They didn't pull the trigger, but they still provided the gun, and I figure Barret at least will continue to argue it was the right decision to make. I mostly just remember the Cait Sith speech, though, and that's the one I can see essentially having the same vibe.

I was unsure about this at first too but the more time passes I actually really like it For all Avalanche know, they accomplished their goals - Considering how quickly they were running away, they kinda wanted a similar effect - not just a minor thing that could easily be repaired. They could make it a bit awkward by having Barret be like "it wasn't supposed to do that!" but I doubt he will. EDIT: Forgot about Jessie admitting the bomb was more powerful in the original, so yeah there's precedent. Shinra "helped" them because their entire goal is to make Avalanche public enemy no. 1 and connect them to Wutai, in order to justify their war. That is DELIGHTFULLY evil and actually makes the levelling of Sector 7 make a bit more sense later on - they're willing to sacrifice their own subjects in order to guarantee their own power. They also have enough money to replace whatever, because they're capitalism magnified. It'll also help explain why they don't just send massive attack squads to track down Avalanche - they want them to sow some discord so they can make the threat seem even bigger.

Thread Jason Schreier: "Final Fantasy VII Remake's Box Art Sure Is Misleading"
I think it depends how it shakes out - they really do seem to be going all out to make "part 1" a full game, which would be let down by anything that makes people decide to hold off till the "full release". Square Enix probably knows that's a bad idea - they have Life is Strange sales figures to show how many people buy in after the last Episode is out, after all. In this case that'd be 5+ years from now, which would be catastrophic financially. Honestly they should have just dropped the "Remake" part instead, and advertised the following parts as sequels a la XIII-2 etc. but this is a Nomura production, don't expect the titles to make a whole lotta sense

FWIW it won't be hard for the FFVII Remake to wrap up the Midgar story in a satisfying way. The comparisons to movies are kinda silly - it's much easier to accept if you view the whole Remake project as a TV series, with each part being a season. Not everything will be tied up, but there'll be enough of a culmination, followed by teases of what's to come next. Of course they could screw it up but yeah.

After everything we've seen at this point I'm interpreting the FFVII remake as more of an adaptation than a 1:1 translation. Kinda more like the TV adaptations of books, like Game of Thrones and Witcher. Some things are excised, some things are greatly expanded, some new characters are added, that sorta thing.I think this misunderstanding is fundamentally why they aren't labelling it. Square Enix has experience with episodic games with Life is Strange, and they have the data for how people buy such games. So I get why they didn't go with "Part 1", because even in this thread a lot of people who do know it's only Midgar think it'll be a 6 hour experience, but I still reckon they shoulda gone with a subtitle.

It's extremely silly and I dunno why they weren't just upfront with it. Hell, even a subtitle would have worked. Kinda odd they didn't go that route considering this is Nomura we're talking about. But I'm not at all opposed to it being split up into parts, it's the best possible scenario IMO. Midgar has more than enough content to fill an entire game - it's a massive city. If anything I wish the original spent more time there. It's just the marketing side of things that is gross.

In some ways I kinda wish Chibnall just carried on turning Doctor Who into his own spin on things, without relying on referencing the past too much. Instead they seemed to take the criticism of the previous season a bit seriously and worked in major plot beats involving historical characters and settings without really thinking through the repercussions. I don't really mind it though, I've long since checked out of taking Doctor Who lore super seriously. In a lot of ways it even works, too. Getting an explanation for why they call themselves something as arrogant as Time Lords is fun, and I like that the doctor's acceptance of her past lives eventually just turned into "oh well, I'm still me!" It would have worked a lot better if the timeless child was someone else, though. It's the same problem as giving Rey an important bloodline in Star Wars - they basically removed the Doctor's own free will and agency in escaping Gallifrey and living their own life. Though they already toyed with that already what with Clara 'n all.

I'm hoping Like a Dragon gets the same treatment, even if it'll be very odd to hear Kiryu speak in English. Also FWIW I wouldn't say Persona 5 is anywhere near the worst, not when you have lifeless translation jobs like Cyber Sleuth out there. It's definitely weaker than the games that preceded it, mind. One of the worst I've actually played has to be that one game by the creator of Hotel Dusk that was released on the 3DS eShop. It's another one of those examples that proves localization > straight translation, because boy was it boring.

But yeah it's too early to say - things could either get a lot better or a lot worse. I know that I'd have probably cancelled my flight for a refund by now if I were thinking of going, but that's more because it's expensive flying there from the UK. It might be a very US-centric show if it goes ahead. It is worth noting the sheer expense and foreplanning, too. Why would a company spend hundreds and thousands on TV set ups, cabling, massive statues etc. if there's a possibility the show won't even go on? That's why I figure we'll find out sooner rather than later if cancellations happen.

Maybe Vivi ranking so high up will finally convince Square Enix to put him even more spin-offs. Everything else is pretty solid though, outside of no FFXIV music in the top 10. At least the Final Fantasy main theme ranked highly, I think a lot of people tend to sleep on it despite it being extremely good. I still don't get the hype for To Zanarkand though, it's probably not even in my top 5 FFX songs

I recently went to a FF fan convention in the UK and it was probably a 50/50 split between men and women attendees. In fact, there might have been more women now I think about it. So it's not even just the polling that puts to bed that old myth, you can outright see it in person. The franchise is huge across all demographics and I'm excited to see how it grows from here.

I'm guessing a lot of games that come out over the holidays are going to have separate PS4/PS5 XB1/XSX SKUs, even if they'd both essentially be the same product (although I assume some discs will have higher res texture packs, not this theoretical Sonic collection though obviously). At some point it just comes down to making the product look new and shiny on store shelves. We kinda saw it with Assassin's Creed IV having PS3 and PS4 boxes during the last transition.

The Classic Sonic model seems a little different compared to the one used in Generations and Forces, though it looks way better with sharper spikes and a better face. Outside of the font choice, which isn't even that bad, this is the route they should have taken for all the other 2D "remakes", at least when it comes to the battle sprites. The overworld sprites were where you can see them start to adopt the "tiny torso, giant arms" you see in the V and VI updates. Keeping things pixelated helps obscure it a bit, at least. Honestly though it's really baffling Square Enix seems allergic to pixel art when two of their major mobile titles, Brave Exvius and Record Keeper, are all about unfiltered pixels. World of Final Fantasy is super cute and worth playing, IMO. It's cheesy and goofy but honestly really funny at times - if you like modern cartoons like Adventure Time and the like you'll probably have a fun time going through it. Gameplay wise it's a bit simple, but it works. Great soundtrack too. XV is also good. Not amazing, but I think everyone will get something different from it. It's just that kinda game where it's impossible to even try to be objective with an appraisal, IMO. I'd recommend watching Kingsglaive at some point after starting it if you're enjoying it, however, as it covers story beats they just allude to in the game itself. Don't bother with Pocket Edition though, I played through the entire thing and it only does one interesting change (a full dungeon in the icey tunnel with the train). Another option could be the move where he smashes down a large object on the ground - just have him pull out a bike/TV/sign and propel himself up with it. Could have different animations depending on whether or not there's an opponent in front of him and if he's on the ground. I'm half expecting it to be a similar situation to how a lot of Japanese games were crossplatform with the Vita. I could also see plans changing if the PS5/XSX blow up in terms of sales - kinda like how Nintendo promised we'd be getting 3DS games for years then sales started stagnating hard and they seemingly put an end to that initiative. I live in England, and since someone is typically in my house most hours of the day, we're kinda-sorta treated as the local post office sometimes, which is a bit frustrating but it's not a big deal. The thing about being worried about theft is that the recipient is given the address of the person who the package was delivered to, and the time. I'm pretty sure you could take it to court if they refused to hand it over. So yeah I think the apprehension is a little weird but also the US has, y'know, loads of laws that allow you to get shot on someone's doorstep, so I get it. Also the fact US suburban houses are far more distant from one another than most suburban streets in the UK. There's less reason to be polite to someone who lives 200 feet away compared to someone who shares a wall with you. To be completely honest though I still dunno why we haven't moved to evening postal deliveries as an option yet. Would suck for the delivery people, but I'd wager a vast majority of people are working 9 - 5 Monday-Friday. Seems kinda counterproductive.

Just got it on PS4, I have a few complaints but overall I think it's a fine enough package so far, especially for the price (50 games by M2 would probably cost over $100) Main issues:While I played a lot of Mega Drive games as a kid I can't say I'm an enthusiast when it comes to game audio. Streets of Rage 1 sounds pretty much spot-on though, even down to the EEYAH death cries. Shining in the Darkness sounded a little weird, but I've never even seen it before today. I figure they prioritized some games more than others. Really I hope they patch things, I assume the hitching is a Unity issue and Nearest Neighbour scaling isn't that hard to accomplish. With those fixed, it's a pretty solid collection for those who aren't enthusiast purists. Phantasy Star IV and maybe Ristar are going to be the games I devote the most time to initially, so I should be able to report back on those.

I love this face Link makes in Twilight Princess - it's unique just for the Ooccoo and accurately represents the face the player will make. Especially fun considering how generally stoic TP Link is. Then there's all the animations in Pokémon Crystal which still feel more full of personality than most of the animations in later games (though Amie and Camping are starting to bridge it a bit)

Thread Most ridiculous real life location mistakes in games
I'm fine with it in most cases if it accurately represents the "feeling" of a city. It's why GTAV is a pretty solid Los Angeles for a lot of people despite not actually being LA.There actually is a codec call that explains the crocodiles as being captive ones that escaped and also got irradiated. The same call also has Snake make a joke about his penis, so there's that. Apparently it was also later indicated that it may have been partially based on what is now modern-day , which was part of the Soviet Union which has some subtropical areas. Though TBH I'm pretty sure it was just Kojima Productions wanting to have as many varied environments as possible and it was a happy coincidence it kinda-sorta-maybe works. There's something inherently skeevy to me about trademarking the One World Trade Center. Just feels weird to ask people to pay to use it. Maybe have restrictions in place for people using it in post-apocalyptic scenarios, but Spider-Man would have been a perfect fit.

I think the difference would be they could very easily just put a racing mode onto the main menu, separate from the story mode. Yakuza even does that with a few of its minigames once you unlock them. I would say GameCube Animal Crossing is more "earthy" than eerie, which is what I loved about it. The way everything felt muddy and like an actual forest was pretty cool, like it was an actual community of animals. That said, I think New Horizons' aesthetic is just as good. New Leaf disappointed me a bit because it felt washed out and a bit too clean, but New Horizons is leaning far into the colors and honestly looks like it will nail the feeling of being on an island in an archipelago. Just the way those rocks jut out from the sides and the general sense of adventure you'll have getting from place to place, until it's "civilized" by pavements and bridges, will be a fun development to see. I also won't really mind the lack of mean villagers considering they've upped their liveliness in other ways, like giving them way more world interactions. Seeing the jock villagers doing morning aerobics on the beach is and I assume the other personality types will have similar quirks.

I don't think I ever even got close to completing Melee's, is it even possible? I think 3DS/Wii U is the best on a technical level - it actually uses the mechanics of the game and can be a fun way to unwind if you had a tough time in the preceding battles. Ultimate's and 64's are ok. I think with Brawl they must have put the actual credits after Subspace Emissary? The one they went with for Classic Mode reeks of "oh crap we should probably do something here".

Thread "Our nephew's emotional & mental health improved dramatically when we banned Ninja from his life"
There's almost no oversight when it comes to kids media on YouTube and Twitch. When it comes to mainstream TV there are advertising standards bodies, and in the UK we have an organization called Ofcom that outright handles complaints, and the "watershed" that means explicit content can't be shown until after 9pm. A lot of it does come down to parental supervision with the internet, admittedly, and the internet being unregulated is one of its greatest strengths, but kids can fall down some pretty dark rabbit holes if they're not careful. Personally I think it's on YouTube and Twitch to come up with smart solutions, and parents to become more informed.

Thread "Our nephew's emotional & mental health improved dramatically when we banned Ninja from his life"
YouTube should definitely be avoided by kids under the age of 10. There's a bit of leeway after that - in my preteen years I grew up in the era of Newgrounds and Homestar Runner, and the latter especially was just as good as any broadcast TV show and honestly shaped my sense of humor. There are likely just as many decent good family-friendly YouTube channels out there, too, so it wouldn't be fair to excise it entirely. It's just way too easy for kids to fall down algorithmically driven rabbit holes that are at best vapid wastes of time and at worst indoctrination into heinous beliefs and hazardous to mental wellbeing. And it's also way too easy as an out for parental figures to shove a kid in front of a tablet with little to no guidance. But I think preteens and regular teens shouldn't be locked out from that exploration (for example, a teen in the middle of nowhere, USA would probably learn a lot more about being LGBT online than in school). It's an inate part of childhood, and it's more on the companies to prevent horrid things from being on their websites to begin with.

Sometimes you hear a song in a game that is so incredibly awesome you're anticipating hearing it again, but it turns out it only plays in a very specific circumstance, whether it be a town you visit briefly, a combat encounter that's rare, or anything in between. As an example, Yakuza 0 has Trouble Shooting Star, which became one of my favorite songs in the entire soundtrack after first hearing it during one of the initial English trailers. Even in the examples shown it's not just "kill X monsters", it's "kill X monsters with X materia". I agree it's nice to have full, story-driven quests, but it's not a bad thing for a game to also have quests where you seek out monsters etc. Hell, an entire plot point in FFVII is that the slums are a dangerous place to live - of course they'd hire people to keep the monster population in check. Wanting it to die is going a bit far, but at this point I wouldn't exactly say E3 is good for gaming. It's a lot of un-necessary competition for the limelight, when game development prices are only rising higher and higher. Social media & streaming services allow for a year-long approach to delivering news and announcements - it means fewer games get ignored. Games like Wattam and Untitled Goose Game get to share the spotlight in State of Play and Nintendo Directs without being a footnote within a week of major reveals. I don't remember fighting regular enemies at that point, but I could be wrong. Also Kingdom Hearts is filled with guest party members, it took till the KH3 Re:Mind DLC for three of them to become playable, and there are still a bunch left unplayable. Given the development pedigree shared between the two franchises it's pretty likely Red's in a similar boat. On October 1st, 2009, Sony released the PSP Go to the befuddlement of people around the globe. The last new model to be released worldwide, it was smaller and lighter than its predecessors, with 16GB of storage with the option to expand and Bluetooth, allowing you to hook up PS3 controllers. This in conjunction with the cradle that included Video Out basically let you dock it to the big screen. But the elephant in the room was always that it didn't take physical media at all, due to UMD's being massive noisy unwieldy beasts. Instead you had to download everything via the PlayStation Store, and to this day there are plenty of key PSP titles that aren't available through that method. The little thing never really hit its full potential, but Sony did try for what it's worth, with numerous bundles in 2010 and a discount. Alas, in 2011 it was discontinued in North America, and Sony shifted its attention to the PlayStation Vita. Did you have a PSP Go? Do you even remember it? Was it weirdly prescient, as we enter an age where digital content becomes more and more popular?

I still figure this is the ending, entirely based on the way the last trailer implied Red XIII is just a guest party member. If there was an explorey section post-Midgar I figure they'd just have made him playable at that point. I do think we'll get a post credits that shows the crew arriving in Kalm, though. I also like to think they'll introduce Yuffie by having her steal the party's materia while they're distracted in Kalm, to explain why you don't have Firaga etc. from the very beginning of part 2

Thread Pick one dormant IP from PS1, PS2, and PS3 that you think will be revived on PS5
PS1 - Wild Arms the mobile game happened but does that really count? I could see a modern western JRPG doing well but I think Sony would give the IP to someone else rather than develop it in-house. PS2 - Jak and Daxter Not by Naughty Dog, but something similar to Ratchet and Clank could do well. I figure it'd be a similar reboot but more in the vein of the first game. PS3 - Demon's Souls Never played it, no idea if it'd work, but hey it'd technically be a way to get a new Souls game

You can recruit NPC party members, which I believe make the game a lot easier I played it for about 2 weeks last year and it was fun but the archaic nature of things really put me off putting any more time into it. The story dialogue being delivered via the standard chat menu, quests being confusing/useless, and the general slowness were the biggest offenders. It's definitely worth trying though, so long as you go in with the expectation that it's nothing like FFXIV.

Meant to go with "what if", my bad Either way though, we've already seen Switch hardware change marginally over time, with better batteries, not to mention the Switch Lite. This is way worse to me than the cloud save situation: Unless there's an error in the google translation, this suggests you won't be able to transfer your data to a new Switch. In most people's cases, sure, that's not a problem, but what if the Switch Pro launches? Or what if someone becomes an Animal Crossing fan after getting New Horizons, buys the new redesign, and can't transfer? It's just real dumb and not something New Leaf had in effect. Of course this Cloud-based solution could remedy it but the fact they thought it'd be a good idea in the first place is baffling.

Oracle of Ages/Seasons are the games I feel need the most modernizing. They were a bit too ambitious for the l'il ol Game Boy. I'd hope they'd get a much more fleshed out remake than Link's Awakening, though. I'd be fine with just a HD port of Skyward Sword, although it'd be cool if they basically retooled the entire game to work without motion (just throw in a Metal Gear Rising style slashing system). I'd also love Spirit Tracks to get a full Breath of the Wild-style rebirth. Explore on foot to unlock more train routes to make travelling a lot quicker, get rid of the microphone nonsense. The story and setting of that game is too good to be stuck on the DS.

Thread What do you want from mass effect 5?
One way they could make a sequel series work is by reaching into the one Star Trek thing they didn't really do in the original trilogy - alternate universes. Just have a mission in the game that alludes to the other endings being canon in an alternate dimension, maybe even have the crew visit them to find out that in the Control ending universe Wrex is evil and has a goatee. Hell go all Spider-Verse on it and have the entire premise of the game be about stopping an interdimensional threat. That's one way to up the stakes from Reapers.

Andromeda was the best possible set-up without tarnishing the original trilogy, and they kinda squandered it. A sequel could work but I don't have much confidence. I think all of the relationships made sense in-the-moment, but none of them made sense in the epilogue. I hate it when teenage pairings somehow persist until adulthood, although I guess the wizarding world has the excuse of you not having much in the way of choice (every British wizard attends a single school after all). Although it's a bit problematic that for a series that tries to criticize the eugenics of wizard pureblood families, every canon pairing that I'm aware of is between two magic users. I get JK did it, it's a lot easier to write an epilogue when you aren't introducing Harry's new muggle wife who works in a Pret a Manger, but at the same time I feel the epilogue wasn't necessary in the first place.

Thread So what will come out first: Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 or Final Fantasy XVI?
All of those were a decade ago, and Fabula Nova Crystallis was pretty much a disaster, especially when it comes to the global releases. Didn't help that the original XIV happened during all that, either. Ever since, SE has been pretty reliably marketing only one big JRPG at a time. After E3 2015, FFXV made way for Nier Automata which made way for Dragon Quest XI which made way for Kingdom Hearts 3 which made way for Final Fantasy VII Remake. In between we got smaller things like ports and spin-offs (WoFF). There's occasionally some overlap (DQXI and KH3 were relatively close to each other) but it is a noticeable trend, and one that makes financial sense now these games are massive AAA endeavors. No sense in competing against themselves.

I think XVI is closer along than we think and Square Enix has learned its lesson not to announce such projects years in advance. Like, I could legit see a 2020 announcement and 2021 release, but I'm an optimist. FFVII Part 2 will be more expedient too I imagine but considering they can't reuse THAT many assets (Midgar is visually unlike every other area in the original game) it will probably be 2022 at the soonest. Square Enix also seems hesitant to cross-promote their big games if they aren't MMOs. We didn't really start seeing FFVII again until after KH3 was out. That's why I figure we could see XVI this E3.

Big, E-102 and Blaze are the best (the former more down to his vibe rather than the gameplay). Tangle and Whisper are also fantastic and need to be folded into the main crew. Rouge needs a redesign to be less out-of-place but her personality is great, Silver is a dork and I love that Worst is probably the one-offs like Chip, the lady from Secret Rings, Merlina etc. Also I have an inate dislike for most of the SatAM cast, though their redesigns towards the end of the Archie comics run made them more tolerable

Andy in Toy Story 1 is a nightmare. But we've got some ways to go before we match late 2000's CG movies, but it's startlingly close: And bear in mind these examples are from Kingdom Hearts 3, a game that had to juggle a buncha different styles and so many character models. I'm still kinda miffed we barely got any current-gen games chasing the Pixar/Disney CG aesthetic outside of Knack.

Spreading it out over the year that way actually sounds awesome, rather than getting it all thrown at us in February and June. I like playing as Joker, and his stage is fun. The fact they got music from P3, 4, AND 5 still surprises me but it's fantastic. I do wish they went with a moveset that better suited Persona, though - swap Down B with something that swaps out Persona (Arsene, Jack Frost, Pixie) and have them pop out for certain moves. Hero is fun and nonsense but gets detractions because Sugiyama ugh Banjo feels like a character from an alternate universe where he was in the first Smash, which is a good thing. No real strong feelings towards him or his stage, though. Yoko Shimomura's remix elevates the whole pack to a 'nother level tho. Terry is one of those "wow I admire the love put into this character but I hate fighting game inputs" newcomers. His stage is also bafflingly boring visually considering the beauty that is KoF backgrounds. At least the music is very good. Byleth is fun to play as and Garreg Mach is probably the best stage of the lot, but he has a lot of moves that feel a bit too similar to past attacks (Joker's Up B, Simon's up tilt, down B basically being Hero's firey axe...) Shouldn't have been the last pack IMO. So yeah for me it basically goes Joker > Banjo > Hero > Terry > Byleth

I figure it'll be announced relatively soon - probably at E3, so FFVII Remake Part 1 is out of the way. Would love it if it's closer than we expect, too. As for the gameplay, something more Xenoblade-y would be fun - essentially bring in a hot bar system but keep the action frenetic. Wouldn't be opposed to FFVII's combat system being adapted, either. ATB would be shooting themselves in the foot and I think they know that. And in terms of setting I'd like something that moves away from the modern day tropes, even as someone who liked FFXV a lot. I also don't really want Yoko Taro involved, I played Automata and only really enjoyed the very start and very endHopefully whatever we get has explorable cities on that scale, it's a shame we never really got Insomnia.

I think Zelda has enough alternate dimensions for basically anything to stay "real" - this is the universe where we have the Sacred Realm, Lorule, AND the Twilight Realm co-existing. Link's Awakening's dream realm is the one exception IMO, and that was pretty masterfully woven into the overarcing story for a Game Boy game. You could argue that death and letting go are the central themes of Majora's Mask, though, in which case Termina ceasing to be would fit the narrative, even if it's one I don't necessarily agree with (I think Majora is about not letting pessimism take hold and instead finding new hope and optimism in the face of adversity)I honestly prefer that, I like Bowser basically being a mob boss to the koopalings who has a heart of gold when he's with his one kid

Still playing through Yakuza Kiwami and I think it explains things like Nishiki pretty well (he lost Kiryu, who was essentially his counterweight, and had joined the Dojima family himself which he didn't have the fortitude for, something I'm pretty sure 0 even says). Majima's "wild side" was also strongly alluded to be inspired by the people he met on his journey, that and a general disillusionment with the Yakuza after all the crap they pulled. Later games pretty much confirm he isn't bonkers 100% of the time. I do agree that them getting their original costumes was a bit silly though, especially in the case of Majima, whose haircut and jacket look very out of place in the 1980's. My biggest issue with Kiwami is the bizarrely fast pacing and awkward cutscenes. I played 3-5 then Judgment THEN 0, where every plot point is given a long time to stir, whereas a billion things happen in Kiwami 1 in the first hour and you barely get a chance to breathe. I'm guessing they remade the PS2 game shot-for-shot for the most part.

My personal guess is that the next mainline game will be called something like "Verum Rex: Kingdom Hearts", and it'll feature Yozora going to the worlds of Marvel, Star Wars, and Fox properties as he sleeps, while Tokyo is something of a main hub with its own story going on. So it'll essentially be a more "mature" Kingdom Hearts (in the sense that the MCU and Star Wars movies are more "mature" than, say, Tangled). This'll let Nomura touch on some of the elements of Versus XIII, but I wouldn't expect things like seeing dead people, Yozora being part of the yakuza, or so much of the heated romance between not-Noct and not-Stella.

that 4chan rumor falls apart the second it mentions the Luminous engine, why on earth would they go back to that after UE4 made their lives easier for multiple internal projects. Is the FFXV team even still using it after Tabata left? Also for what it's worth I interpreted the Yozora "this isn't what I look like" thing to be hinting at him perceiving himself with a different body, while Sora saw his true form. I dunno why I thought that, but it'd add up.

Thread Nomura officially lost it (KH3 Remind Final Secret Boss Open Spoilers)
Yeah this is basically the only way - essentially turning Yozora into a recursive Final Fantasy rep I'd be all for it even as someone who likes FFXV quite a bit, Versus XIII was so fundamentally different anyway after all was said and done. Dunno if Nomura has the power to work on three major projects at once, though.I dunno how much Disney contributes in terms of funding and advertising, which would be the main issue, and they own the merchandise rights to the original characters (KH has funko pops, Final Fantasy does not). But given that Disney is such a giant mega corp and probably isn't as invested in the series as it was back in the early 2000s, they ignore a lot, so long as whatever Nomura cooks up doesn't completely go against their image. My perspective on it depends on how much Mickey Mouse and co. they'd put in whatever comes next. And if they even keep the Kingdom Hearts name attached.

Thread Nomura officially lost it (KH3 Remind Final Secret Boss Open Spoilers)
I really hope people don't think Disney will allow Nomura to turn Kingdom Hearts into a vanity project that's just a recreation of Versus XIII They aren't gonna let the franchise that ostensibly stars Mickey Mouse turn into something focusing on an edgy anime boy who is essentially a member of the yakuza who sees dead people My personal guess is that they'll maintain some allusions to the original concept of Versus XIII (the aesthetic of the city, the main character being a sleepy loner) but it'll still have Kingdom Hearts elements and continute to be extremely cheesy. The best you can hope for is that Yozora heads to more "mature" worlds based on Marvel and Star Wars rather than colorful Disney locales.

Licensing does seem like the best way for Disney to go about things. Would take a lot of money to set up divisions, and even then there's no guarantee of success. I figure if they wanted to start publishing again they'd acquire already existing devs into the fold, kinda like how Warner Bros. bought up Atari, TT Games, Midway etc. Sure hope they don't give away exclusive rights in the future, though, like EA and Star Wars. Letting Nintendo and Square Enix make Marvel games was a good move.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is donezo at this point. More likely to see Mario Kart 9, and even the chances of that are slim IMO. 5. I could see the MK team being given the chance to go single-player, but my guess is we'll get something primarily single player with simple local multiplayer options. 6. Nah, no gimmicks with the Switch Pro outside of maybe an updated Pro Controller. 7. EA will probably bring more if its smaller experimental games over but they're allergic to ports of old games. Wouldn't be surprised if they have a kid-friendly Switch Star Wars game in the works though. 8. Nah, probably Nintendo's next system once the Series X has gotten its userbase. 9. Splatoon 3 or a heavily advertised third party port. 10. 60 mil, I'm confident in Animal Crossing boosting things but that's about it.

I'm fine with all the Fire Emblem love personally, I used to be salty but when they actually do something interesting with the gameplay it's worth it. Robin, Corrin, and Byleth all seem pretty unique, and I couldn't really be mad at Chrom considering how relatively easy he must have been to implement. What just sours it a little for me is the lack of attention Zelda gets in comparison, and it's almost certainly down to some dumb internal rule that one-off characters shouldn't get a shot. Hell I'd even be fine with the Link clones getting more versatile movesets to better represent their games (Masks for Young Link, Deku Leaf etc. for Toon Link) but nope, just BotW Link got that treatment. My guess is the uX announcement is either a Switch port/remake/thing, the next "iteration" of the uX story, or just an all-new mobile game entirely. They'd have made a bigger deal of it via other channels if it was something else. Like, the idea of circumcision becoming mocked or framed as something horrific is kind of terrifying. There are quite a few other misconceptions too. It really isn't the massive change some seem to think it is. But at the same time I agree that in all other non-medical situations it should be the child's choice and not forced at a young age. I'd argue the same for baptism and other similar traditions that tend to be forced on children without consent. From what I've heard the Silent Hill wiki of all places has a massive problem with circumcision talk, of all places. The difference for me is that this is handled more subtly than dropping a gigantic real-world fan into the world and no one really addressing it at all Immersion breaking is fine - TTYD has several characters that talk directly to the camera - but it has stuff that makes you invested in the characters, world, and story. They aren't mutually exclusive. Modern Paper Mario leans way too much in one direction though, at least IMO. Sure it would be difficult to raise legal actions against the ESA if they scrubbed it before anything happened, but that's just throwing everyone else under the bus, who knows what could still happen to the people caught in the crossfire. I still think there's a place for conventions, because it's not cost effective for the media to go to every company individually unless they're developer hotspots, but E3 has become a horrible chimera that tries to cover the media, developers, consumers. It was always gonna crumble, this just sped things up. I'm hoping we get smaller scale, media-and-industry only events in the wake of this, spread throughout the year. This makes me say Jedi Fallen Order I tried to play Sekiro and just couldn't deal with the precision and patience it requires. Going from point A-to-B is easier than Souls, but the boss fights are no joke. Fallen Order in general is a lot smoother sailing and I had a blast with it while it still put up a good challenge.

Thread What graphical elements do you think will make this gen look dated in the future?
A few games still have texture pop-in, but not nearly as many as last gen. Jedi Fallen Order is kinda the biggest recent culprit. Besides that, maybe extremely simple menus that use sans serif fonts? They'll always look stylish but they don't fit every franchise that's had 'em. Also faux-mouse cursors in console games.

Thread What seems more likely for Pokemon in 2020: DPP Remakes or Let's Go Johto?
Neither at this point, considering we presumably have way more to see of the expansion pass contents and that'll be dripfed to us like the usual Pokémon hype cycle. Kind of a godsend, honestly, even if it is a bit odd to get the "third version" as it were within a year of the original game's release. 2021 will probably be Diamond/Pearl's remakes though... Or a second expansion pass, filling up the remainder of the Galar dex.

I had the founder's edition pre-ordered but everything that came out about it made me cancel. Kinda glad I did. Thread How much are y’all budgeting for next gen specifically? Do you budget for launches at all or do what feels right?
The Switch was the first thing I got at launch since the 3DS, I skipped on the launches of the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U because there wasn't that much there for me personally. That said I'll probably be in for the PS5 launch assuming there are exciting games and backwards compatibility. But even then I'll probably only get one or two games at launch and maybe a few digital games, and potentially even some PS4 games if there are new patches released. Might get more if I sell my Pro. The only chance of me getting an XSX at launch is if they inexplicably get an amazing JRPG exclusive out of nowhere. Will probably get one later down the road, though.

Thread UK retailer GAME likely to close 40 stores amid 'challenging retail market'
The issue for me with GAME really comes down to the pricing. £49.99 for a typically unsealed copy of a game when it's usually £39.99 or less online? And I'd have to spend bus fare to get to the store on top of that? Really not worth it. Their special edition exclusives have also been lacking lately, and the store near me does almost no midnight launches either. It really does feel like an inevitability that they'll close down entirely within a year or two, there are only so many miracle buy-outs that can happen. My only hope is that the employees swiftly find jobs elsewhere and that independent game retailers finally get their chance to shine again.

I kinda love the idea of this concept of totally shifting the franchise to a place where they can grow things organically, rather than trying to find tenuous links to the current movies in kinda clumsy ways. Recently got the recent SNK Collection on the PS4 and the physical box art is pretty good! Especially compared to the Switch version that is just a scantily clad Athena front and center But then the actual menu icon on the system level was said scantily clad Athena It's hardly the worst offender but I quickly shuffled it into fourth place in one of my PS4 folders because if a person not savvy with ancient SNK games happened to see it I'd feel very awkward Really I'm more just kinda annoyed that they felt the need to do "sex sells" for a bundle of iconic old games

Then by the time you're back in control of the normal party you could have the likes of Fira etc. which wouldn't be as brutal a shift down You also have Yuffie who is basically an inbuilt excuse for having all your materia stolen And I wouldn't be surprised if the third and hopefully final part starts with comatose Cloud which is another sort of fresh-start to work from

This DLC is pretty explicitly the replacement for the typical "third version", only technically $20-30 cheaper Diamond & Pearl, for example, didn't have every Pokémon available in the wild, so you had to either transfer from the GBA games or purchase Platinum when it came out. In the same way, you can either use Pokémon HOME to get the old 'mon into Sword/Shield from your old games or purchase the DLC when it comes out. Of course it's still possible to dislike that methodology but it's true it's essentially the same as it's always been, there's just a delay in the Pokémon arriving in the National Dex this time.

I sure hope we don't get people complaining when New Horizons just lets you create a character like Animal Crossing should have done from the very start anyhoo this looks cute, I never did finish Rescue Team back in the day and I'm guessing they'll remake Explorers if this does well, so I'm on board entirely for that.

1. Soken & Co. continue to kill it, really hope to get the opportunity to listen to some of these tracks live one day. 2. Brilliant remixes of classic tunes that do more than just give 'em more of a beat. 3. They managed to make brand new compositions that perfectly suit the stylings of the original games, which is incredibly commendable. 4. - The music in this franchise continues to be amazing. 5. Not as many stellar songs as I'm used to from the series, but some solid tracks nontheless and amazingly emotional remixes. 6. - Almost entirely here because of the opening and ending credits themes, which are licensed ALEXANDROS songs, but SO GOOD. 7. - I REALLY didn't like most of this game, but the music was undeniably great. 8. - A lot of songs that don't seem like much at first but quickly become otherworldly earworms. 9. - Not the best Pokémon soundtrack, but still pretty solid. Does a pretty cute job keeping a lietmotif going, too. 10. - Haven't even played the game yet, I just really, really like Devil Trigger.

Thread ResetEra Games of the Year 2019 - Voting Thread (READ THE OP) [Ends Jan 26th 8:59am EST]
I've always loved the concept of the Yoshi series more than any other 2D Nintendo platformer, and while Crafted World feels a little rote, especially after Woolly World was such a return to form, it's still incredibly creative. I couldn't help but grin at things like Shy Guys waving butterflies on sticks in the background, "underwater" fish simply being cardboard cutouts on strings, crabs made out of plastic cups... I just wish it didn't feel the need to pad itself so readily - I can see lots of folks feeling pressured to play all of the Poochy Pup rescue missions as soon as they're unlocked. I suck at Crypt of the Necrodancer. I even bought it on Switch after Cadence of Hyrule was announced to hone my skills, only to get continuously murdered on the second set of levels. So to say I went into the new Zelda-spin with hesitation would be an understatement. What I played, though, was a glorious combination of Crypt's immensely fun rhythm-based gameplay and the Legend of Zelda's sense of exploration. The soundtrack was amazing (that Great Sea transition is phenomenal), the spritework is gorgeous, and it was a brilliant way to burn a few hours. Even those who wanted the classic difficulty were accomodated, too, with plenty of options and post-launch support catering to those players. They knocked it out of the park, as far as I'm concerned. Jedi Fallen Order seemed like one of those games I knew I'd like, but I was in no hurry to play. So I waited to receive it as a gift for Christmas, which meant playing it after watching Rise of Skywalker - a movie that started making me re-evaluate my affection for the entire franchise. When I finally stuck it in my PS4 on December 25th, though, all those worries faded away and I had a blast exploring the game's beautifully realized world that used the right amount of fan-service to make for an enjoyable ride. It'd be higher on this list if it weren't for the bugs, hitches, and underwhelming ending that I really should have seen coming. Also where's the BD-1 merch at. Every other year I discover an indie game that is so bizarre and groundbreaking that I didn't know it was something I wanted. This year, Hypnospace Outlaw was that game. There isn't much I can say about it without spoiling the experience, so I'll just drop these two words - Geocities Cop. If that flared any part of your brain, play this game. The first two episodes of Life is Strange 2 aren't the strongest, outside of a few bright moments they tended to rely a little too much on cartoonish villainy and cheap shocking moments. Episode three and onward, though? They make the experience worth it, shining the light on a very relevant modern travesty through a slightly supernatural lense, while also finding the time to have LGBT representation, a diverse cast of characters, and a cute sense of humor from time to time. The ending I got at the end of it all will stick with me forever, too. I never really expected Kingdom Hearts 3 to completely satisfy me. I played all of the games more than once, and the tangled, beautifully messy web of lore could never really be wrapped up with one game. So in a way, I was surprised by how much this long-awaited sequel covered, but some notable absenses still stung - thank god Re:Mind is bringing back the Final Fantasy crew! As someone who isn't a stickler for Critical mode and the tightly-tuned gameplay of Kingdom Hearts 2, I found most of my fun exploring the expertly rendered worlds and slowly uncovering the bonkers plot, and I'm not ashamed to say I teared up a little at a certain scene involving the Ice Cream Trio. Hopefully the wait won't be as long for Sora's next adventure. I'm not the greatest at sticking to traditional computer RPGs - typically I adore the stories, but without an enthralling narrative to get sucked into, I tend to bounce off of them. That made Disco Elysium a perfect fit for me, even if I didn't know it before I delved into its grimy post-communist world. After a few hours of confusion about the setting that reflected the amnesiac protagonist's confused perspective, I found myself entrenched in the lore, seeking out every little bit of information regarding Revachol and its history, while also embracing the weird and devoting myself to cryptozoology. The small city is so packed with details and branching paths that I can't imagine no two playthroughs are the same, and after a while I didn't even notice the lack of combat. Also Kim Kitsuragi is one of the best characters from the past decade of media. Sometimes I just want to play a short game - something that can be over in an hour or two - but something that still provides a compelling narrative. A Short Hike is just that. You play as a small anthropomorphic bird, scaling a mountain on the simple hunt for cell phone reception. On the way you meet colorful characters, perform small tasks, and explore the small island, with some surprisingly tight controls and an incredibly enjoyable gliding mechanic tying it all together. The low-fi, Nintendo DS-like visuals are the icing on the cake. After years of playing off-and-on, 2019 finally marked my catch-up to the story in Final Fantasy XIV, and what a great expansion to catch up to it was. Taking place far beyond the regular conflicts of Eorzea, Garlemald, and the far East, Shadowbringers is a breath of fresh air, introducing dozens of new characters, unique environments, and a whole lot more lore to get accustomed to. While its MMO trappings can still feel a little stifling (trying to fight the final boss at 3am and waiting in the queue for an hour wasn't very fun), I can't wait to see what comes next. When I first saw the announcement of Judgment live, I jokingly said that the combination of Phoenix Wright-style investigative courtroom drama and Yakuza gameplay makes it my "perfect game". It turns out I was absolutely on the money. Yagami's journey from being a disgraced lawyer to finding a new purpose is well told, and the new gameplay elements it brings to the fore help break up the typical beat'em up encounters - even if some of them can get a bit overlong (tailing missions, anyone?). More than anything, Judgment oozes style, tension, and drama, and I can only hope a sequel is on the way, because I need to solve more criminal mysteries with Yagami and his allies ASAP. Honorable Mentions (aka I wish I played more of these/played them at all): Resident Evil 2, The Outer Worlds, Persona Q2, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Control And the handy-dandy bot-friendly version: **VoteBot: Thanks for participating in ResetEra GOTY 2019! This is why I've always kinda hated the backlash Lost World got. Its problems were its level design - the actual mechanics were solid for anyone wanting a more 3D platformer-style Sonic game. I get that having a run button in Sonic is bizarre but it is genuinely one of the only ways you can make his movement work in 360 degrees without face planting into walls every five seconds. The Hyrule DLC really showed how well it could work with more open zones, too. Alas Sonic Team seems to take the wrong lessons from every 3D Sonic game and it's exhausting

Out of curiosity, would Horizon: Zero Dawn count? The "animals" are robots, sure, but they act and behave pretty much exactly like the creatures they were based on. It bothered me attacking the deers, for example, since I remember them letting out pretty realistic cries. Been a while since I played it though. The "they're high school students, they bully!" argument falls apart when Kanji is basically the only one to face constant ridicule regarding his Shadow after the fact. Imagine one of the friends calling Rise a stripper, accusing Chie of being "too much of a man", Yukiko an ice queen, or even rubbing in Teddie's insecurities. That basically never happens. Naoto is the only other one I can recall that faces similar "jokes", but they're far fewer than what Kanji receives. For what it's worth I think Persona 4 is very much a product of its time (I can't imagine any game in any region that started production around 2006 handling its subject matter that much better) but yeah, it's inexcusable in a modern context. I still think, from experience, that Yosuke would have been a genuinely good character if they went through with the idea of him being closeted. They basically abandoned that though and I can only really tolerate parts of the games by relying on headcanon.

Great OP, but for what it's worth it might be worth tweaking this bit slightlyIf you play as the female MC in P3P you can befriend characters regardless of gender, and you aren't forced into a romantic relationship with the boys when you progress theirs forward. It's that they didn't take the opportunity to go back and fix the male MC. Also, in the FeMC route, the section of the game where Operation Babe Hunt takes place features a scene which actively shows Akihiko being fine with Aigis potentially being gay, when he misunderstands her attachment to the FeMC. He seriously just shrugs it off and accepts it. I think the FeMC route was taken over by a completely different writer???? The grossest part that I'm aware of is the ability to romance Ken, which is very yikes by itself With the inclusion of the female MC in PQ2, and the main character in Persona 3 Dancing given platonic friendships with the female party members, I kiiinda hope a remake happens just to purge the Hashino-ness.

I am a bit disappointed it's basically just reused locations with a few little extra things so far. It reminds me of how disappointing BotW's DLC was to me, where it basically just reused assets, but in this case it seems like the DLC will just be slotted into the tail end of the story which is kinda lame. For what it's worth, even when I was a kid and the prequels were coming out I thought it was incredibly bizarre how different the Prequel Trilogy technology looked when compared to the OT, when they ostensibly took place within a few decades of each other. The sequel trilogy shows a more grounded progression of technology - even though I'll be the first to admit it was down to nostalgia tugging. I will admit that the sheer absense of prequels stuff in the ST movies is baffling and silly though. I loved the episodes of Rebels that touched on the remnants of the Clone Wars, and Jedi Fallen Order has a of it and I love it. It helps make things feel more cohesive. But yeah they need to timeskip 100+ years into the future at this point. Even KOTOR I feel limits itself by being a tale of the Republic vs. the Empire.

I wish they'd spend the money to go back and re-record all of ARR (I assume that's what they're doing for NG+) The FFVII Remake replacements are also stellar. I have nostalgia for the old guys, but the new direction seems to actually nail their personalities for once. Only one that I might be down on is Quinton Flynn no longer being Reno.

I could see it, though I dunno if they'd make the MC genetically Garlean since they'd have to make-up a third eye or give them an Iconic Hat. Which wouldn't be bad, I suppose, I just figure they'll go with a pretty standard lead visually. Thanalan definitely probably makes the most sense as a central location though, it's probably the easiest of the bunch to make sets for and find shooting locations in the US.

Thread [IGN] Why FFXIV Is Getting a Live-Action Final Fantasy TV Series Adaptation Over FF7 (Also lots of Chocobos, Netflix has been eyeing)
I'm very on board for this so long as they keep it pretty divorced from the plot of the games, so everyone's WoL can be canon. I'm all for minor characters crossing over both ways, though. Ideally I'd have the first season be set in Eorzea and focus on casual adventurin', maybe introduce a unique Ascian just for them to contend with. There is so much lore there really doesn't need to be any overlap, outside of referencing major events that have happened in the expansions. I can just see it being canned due to the expense though. Game of Thrones had a crazy budget and could barely afford to put in a slightly-bigger wolf on screen after a certain point. Though at least FFXIV is never really about major battles, unless they have a flashback to the Dalamud stuff, and that seems to have been the most sigificant expenditure there.

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles was a series known for co-op hack-and-slash gameplay through pretty constrained levels. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers is the chronological sequel to those games and is a semi-open world game where you can trap enemies and objects in gravity orbs and fling them to deal damage. It's basically Silver the Hedgehog's stages in Sonic 06. I have a weird softspot for it, although I have to say I completely forgot the Dead or Alive-esque bikini minigames in that trailer

I tend to avoid games that get bad reviews even if I had interest in them, like Left Alive. Only got so many hours in a day, after all. But I did dislike Death Stranding. I completed it and kinda wish I didn't bother. It even made me retroactively question my love of Kojima's older games, I disliked it that much. I honestly wish it just the walking simulator people dreaded because every time it tried to do anything remotely action-oriented it felt dreadful and infuriating, and it didn't even have an entertaining or interesting story to back it up. The only parts I really liked were the stuff with Mads, and that was mostly from an aesthetic point of view. I kinda get why people liked it but boy, I have negative interest in whatever KojiPro does next.

Dragon Age Inquisition is one of those games where I'm glad I played it before I read any comments. I honestly really enjoyed the adventure and the companions, some of the emotional beats are strong too (like after you escape the original base.) The main story wasn't the best, and the side content is a little iffy, but so long as you don't try and do everything the second it unlocks it's a fun time IMO. Makes me wonder if I'd have enjoyed Mass Effect Andromeda more if I wasn't faced with the crushing brunt of negative opinions the week before release. (Also yes Lightning Returns is great, though I think it's best to play it on Easy if time management isn't your thing. The combat is still fun and challenging enough but without the more frustrating punishments if you die)

Yeah there is really nothing else like Mass Effect, which is kinda the biggest reason Andromeda was so disappointing to me. Plenty of other space games exist, but very few with the same story focus, and it's a lot more traditional sci-fi than Star Wars ever gets. With no real competition it'll standout for decades to come.

Definitely better than XIII and VIII, but I'd point to VII and IX over it any day of the week. Even IV and V, honestly. Doesn't have quite the legacy of WoW yet and a lot of FF fans probably don't want to devote time to an MMO (even though it's totally worth it in this case). Final Fantasy is honestly the one RPG franchise that couldn't, and fundamentally can't, be limited in a list like this. The entire design ethos is to change things up from game to game, other than a few core elements they practically stand-alone. They could have thrown a Chocobo into Xenogears and called it Final Fantasy VII and it wouldn't have been that weird. I'd understand the argument for Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts, but FF??

I actually think FFXV has a pretty good placement all things considered. I think it is "essential" in that it's worth playing to form your own opinion on, not to mention its historical importance and technical aspects. It may not be as good as some of the entries behind it, but I don't think that's the only factor we have to consider. For what it's worth I like the game a lot despite its flaws. Also I think FFXII stands a chance at being on the list thanks to Zodiac Age hitting PC. I feel like it's the Final Fantasy that could most appeal to the CRPG crowd, too. I mean, Dragon Age Origins basically took the gambit system from it.

The design ethos of FFXV is "fantasy meets reality", so the usual trappings of Final Fantasy (crystals, chocobos, monsters, magic etc.) are placed into environments based on modern day Tokyo, Latin America and more. Persona is different in that the fantastical elements are cordoned off in an alternate world, while Pokémon has a deliberately vague time setting (a lot of it feels sci-fi when you see the level of technology in some places.) I would argue that something like Devil Survivor would fall under the Contemporary Fantasy umbrella, though, at least up until a point.

I think Square Enix has probably learned by now not to announce games way ahead of time. You'd hope, anyway. My guess is E3 2021, or some sort of event in late 2020. Maaaybe a logo reveal and teaser trailer at the PS5 reveal, just to get folks hyped up. It's worth noting how much Square Enix doesn't like to cross the advertising streams, though. We barely heard anything about FFVII Remake until KH3 was out, we didn't hear about KH3 until FFXV's entire cycle was done and dusted... I don't think 2021's inevitable FFXIV expansion will stop them, though, unless they're similar aesthetically. So with that in mind, late 2020 after FFVIIR is out would make a lot of sense, presuming development is further along than we thought.

Sonic Jam made me aware of the craftsmanship that goes into making games and that they aren't just made in a vacuum, thanks to its concept art galleries which were a wholly new concept to me at the time Super Smash Bros. Thread The games that need remakes the most - unpopular, flawed entries - never get them. Mostly acclaimed, iconic ones seem to. Should this change?
Lots of people criticise Final Fantasy VII's visuals, especially as time goes on. And they weren't the kind where you could seamlessly make the models higher poly like FFVIII - the world was built around them being chibi. There's also the translation, which is much weaker than the later two games, even if the story holds up. The game being popular played a large part in the decision I'm sure, but I wouldn't really say the original didn't have room for improvement. But yeah I agree for things like Link's Awakening, the remake is cute but the original is almost a perfect game in my eyes where the only limitation is the lack of buttons on the Game Boy. Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee was in a similar boat, especially when FireRed/LeafGreen existed. Really though I'm fine with most of the flawed entries getting polished-up remasters rather than full remakes. If you remade Deadly Premonition or Shenmue from the ground-up, for example, I feel you'd lose a lot of their charm.

One of the few games I bought almost entirely on the name alone is Root Letter... Because I like my anime visual novels that use random punctuation/symbols Sadly it didn't turn out that great. Come to think of it, a lot of the games pQube publishes tend to do this to me when I see them on store shelves in their fancier big boxes. Dusk Diver, World End Syndrome, Raging Loop, Aggelos... I assume theme parks would be fast tracked more than anything The video game division would probably be left to essentially self-operate with minor oversight, like Marvel Comics. At least for a few years. Disney doesn't really have any reason to interfere when they have limited, poor experience with the space. We'd get Nintendo-made Marvel and Star Wars games, maybe even an Avatar thing from Monolith Soft because why not The first movies and shows would probably be Disney+ exclusive and focus mainly on the smaller properties. Things like the Pikmin shorts Miyamoto directed. A Mario movie would be inevitable but I figure it'd take a few years - longer than The Force Awakens took. Zelda might also be pretty early because Disney doesn't really have a live-action fantasy property, even as much as I'd prefer it to be animated by the Tangled team.

I think an important factor for any universe is that they also need good surface-to-air weaponry, if the Reapers can just float above a planet and blast it then they're doomed Sonic could take 'em down in a universe with rings and the Chaos Emeralds to power up the Super Sonic form. At that point he's basically Goku. And Revengeance Raiden could probably do something ludicrous and like grab one by the arm and throw it into another one while Rules of Nature blares Cloud Strife with all of FFVII's Bahamuts. The Weapons would probably crop up in defense, too.

Thread Overall, how do you feel about shipping and its fandom?
Shipping Real People: Please No Shipping Fictional People: Why Not So long as it's just "these characters would be cute together" and doesn't devolve into name calling and harassment I'd much rather have gay relationships be confirmed in-canon though, and I feel like pandering to shippers in that regard is basically giving creators an out from actually committing. Also obviously problematic ships are weird, especially if you're older than 14 and aren't in that edgy teen phase writing awkward fan fics.

Thread What kind of aesthetic would you like to see with Street Fighter VI?
As someone who has never really gotten into Street Fighter, I've never found the last two mainline games to be all that good-looking, outside of a select few characters and environments. Some of it is downright offputting, even. So I dunno, give me a super heavily cel-shaded game like a modern Tatsunoku vs. Capcom with a way higher resolution and polycounts.

Is the implication there that he saw a black woman and immediately assumed it was his daughter like... how could he have pieced it together? Did someone tell him she was a former stormtrooper in the very short period of time after the battle? It's so utterly baffling to have a spin-off tease like that in one of the final scenes of a movie. It'd be like if they brought up Leia's relationship to Vader during Yub Nub.

Yeah, it's the sort of movie where if you turn your brain off to trying to follow the plot it becomes a really fun ride. The ending is basically a stock shonen anime with a massive cast coming together to defeat the cackling lightning man's army while the main character basically yells "MY FRIENDS ARE MY POWER" After my opinion started souring around the midway point (C3PO getting "killed" in a really tonally bizarre way) I decided to just root for it going as stupid and overblown as possible, and I was only slightly disappointed. Shoulda been an army of ghost Jedi. I'm still really let down though, especially as my brain fixates on the issues and remembers how good The Last Jedi was, but I won't exactly say no to rewatching it. That's something I can't say for Attack of the Clones.

According to the visual dictionary, Mustafar. The place Obiwan and Anakin dueled it out, Vader was born, and the cool castle in Rogue One. Yes it's very ridiculous the movie doesn't establish that considering it is theoretically Kylo Ren's mecca.

The stuff about Finn being Force Sensitive is annoying because it's barely implied in the movie itself. I interpreted what Finn said to be something of a desperate hunch, or his Stormtrooper training flashing back into his mind. Something like "the biggest Star Destroyer probably has a transmitter". I didn't even entertain the thought of him having any sort of Force Sensitivity until my dad mentioned it after the fact, and he's someone who didn't pick up on most of the other subtle cues. And also he thought Finn was force sensitive "because the Stormtroopers were transfused with Darth Vader's blood." Which to be honest would actually be kinda rad, in an MGS Genome Soldier sort of way.

Alphinaud from FFXIV. I know a lot of people don't like him because he messes up , but I really like his character arc, especially in Shadowbringers. Teasing him is also funny and cute. Morgana in Persona 5, too. He'd be fantastic and cute if not for the Ann infatuation which gets real creepy, especially if you view it from the lens of past experiences with Teddie. Koromaru still best mascot tho. Every main character in Trails of Cold Steel is great in their own way and I'll never hear otherwise. Rean is a precious head-pat hero.

Thread Most Confused You've Felt Playing a Game
I'm usually one to roll with the punches when it comes to Kingdom Hearts 3, but established important characters referencing a new, off-screen friend who had never even been hinted towards as being a major inciting factor of their backstory... That was real dumb and almost ruined the best part of the game. It then does it a few times more for good measure. It's made worse by the game ostensibly being the finale - the first two games had endings that were more conclusive. That's silly. Also these things in Pokémon were torture as a kid:

I used to be physical only but with the Switch I've decided to start getting easy drop-in games digitally. So Smash, Animal Crossing, most rhythm games, those are digital. I'm honestly expecting Animal Crossing to become one of my most-played games ever just because of how easy it will be to literally pick up and play. RPGs like Pokémon and FF I'll always get physically though. I like having the commitment of putting a disc/cart in, kinda encourages me to finish up longer games and not get distracted.

Thread What is YOUR Star Wars canon sequel trilogy?
I'm half expecting a rushed-out extended cut of Rise to fix issues like it's Mass Effect 3 all over again Personally I'll wind up accepting it all as canon, I didn't hate Rise, it was just disappointing after what TLJ set up. At the very least, future movies set in the Star Wars movies can be set hundreds of years in the future or past, so at the end of the day it barely matters.

Thread Your ideas for Ep. X or ST spin-offs (Open Star Wars spoilers)
No Episode X, they should leave it at that. I'll be open for Disney+ shows or animated spin-offs that continue the adventures of Sequel Trilogy characters, though. They kinda deserve better after how it wrapped up, just like how The Clone Wars gave PT characters a chance to shine. What I want from future movies is far-flung stories where there's no empire and it's an entirely new cast of characters, with the exception of maybe incredibly old droids. Bring in new conflicts, planets, etc. Old Republic would be fine but I don't have confidence they won't change it up enough. One of my least fave things about the KotOR games is that it's basically identical in technology, factions, and aesthetics to the movies.

My guess is there'll be more missions with the Avalanche crew after we first go to Seventh Heaven. We've already seen things like the motorbike chase, the hang-gliding, and the day-time invasion of the smoke monsters, all of which would kinda have to slot into that spot. It does kinda mean that Aerith might get the least playtime of the party though - she only really fights for a few maps in the original, until you rescue her at the same time as Red XIII. Maybe we'll have more little missions to do in Wall Market etc.

That's kinda why I think making OTT evil villains in games is kinda lame. If you're going to go cheesy and fan servicey, go all the way. This dude (Zenos from FFXIV) is willing to drag innocent people into unneccessary conflicts just to find "the perfect sport", i.e. someone who can put up a fight against him. Politics, history, allies, enemies, they don't matter to him in the slightest. What makes him more evil than the likes of Kefka in my eyes is that he doesn't even destroy things because he's crazy or whatever, he just He just wants to become ever more powerful, and doesn't even acknowledge your existence unless you happen to get in his way.

Most all of the FF ports are perfectly playable in my experience, though they can have minor issues. The first two XIII games, for example, were pretty stuttery on my end. Check the forum discussions, typically if there's a problem it takes up 90% of the page. FFVII is also immensely moddable, and there's a 4K texture pack for FFIX that has AI up-scaled versions of the backgrounds that generally look fantastic. Also if you're obsessed with FFXIV I'd play FFIII first, thanks to all the references in the Crystal Tower raid series and beyond.

This argument only really makes sense for games that are trying to forge a sense of tension. So yeah, it makes sense for horror games or levels with a spooky element to have these sorts of threat levels, but I wouldn't say it's necessary for, say, a Platinum game to have tough enemies on easier difficulties. Some people might play certain games just to relish in that sense of power, or to simply enjoy the story, and I'd argue throwing a super tough enemy at them for no thematic reason would be a negative.

First half of the 2000's was great, the latter half not so much. The 2010's were the opposite - a relatively weak first half, a great second. Speaking as someone who enjoys Japanese games primarily, at least. It took those devs forever to adjust to the HD era. Overall though I'd say I prefer this decade, due to the sheer variety of experiences on offer and the diversity found within games and their developers.
