Thread "You aren't a game Dev so you don't get to have an opinion on what is or isn't bad game design"
I think this is along the lines of how most devs feel. You can absolutely give opinions on games, what you like and what you don't like. Bearing in mind though, what you don't like might not necessarily speak for the majority of people who play a game. Calling out, downright bad game design is fine. But, it's when players act like or say they could either; 1. fix it. 2. Do a better job. Game development is a job and the people hired to do it (usually) are the best qualified to do so. Same as most professions around the world. At the end of the day, not everyone is going to like a game you made and that can be tough! But, to criticize players for having an opinion is not the right way to go about things. We've seen devs get way too defensive in the past and it almost never ends well. On the same token though, players acting like armchair devs also, most of the time is laughable and doesn't end well either.

Thread Little glimpse in a Day in the Life of a Japanese Game Programmer
I mean he probably does earn a fair bit as: 1. He works in Tokyo - by and large even smaller apartments are of 100,000yen to start. 2. His looks like a 1LDK, which is probably gonna be at least the price mentioned above if not more depending on what ward he's living in.

10-7 is actually *kinda* good by Japanese standards - if you are guaranteed to be able to leave by 7pm. Most places will have 10-7pm as their core hours, which is when you have to be in the office or workplace. But, then plenty of staff do overtime or continue to work long beyond that. Which is fairly common.

Thread Divinity: Fallen Heroes development has been put on hold
This is sad to see - but sometimes things don't pan out. The demo at PAX was super fun, but game development is tough. I don't think the project is "dead", but I could definitely see how meeting next month's release could have been tough and depending on the final games state, tarnished the "Divinity" brand a little. Hope they can get back to this after BG3.

Thread Help! I'm teaching a HS Video Game Design course this year.
Ahh yes, the same thing happens here in Japan to High School teachers with club sports. Well, as I mentioned there's lots of great resources out there. Mark's stuff is always a good start!

Thread Help! I'm teaching a HS Video Game Design course this year.
How did this even come around if you don't know anything about game design? haha. There are some great books out there such as Steve Swink's Game Feel and A Theory of Fun for Game Design by Raph Koster. There's tutorials out there for game design and game engines from people like Tom Francis, Derek Yu, Rami Ismali and other really inspirational creators. You already are off to a good start if you don't mind what the students use (Mario Maker editor) to show their design prowess. Try to get them to focus on core principles of design and less on what the actual games are or what they look like. Good luck!

Thread Stuff in games you noticed was bad after the fact
I only found out yesterday that these even existed as they were removed from the European/PAL versions of the games. I was talking to someone about it and they fondly remembered them, I was like... "What the hell are you talking about?". Yeah, turns out EU was clamping down on that stuff in kids games early.

Thread PSA: It's not so difficult and pricey to get into FFXIV !
With Shadowbringers looming a couple of weeks back (and looking pretty awesome) I was thinking about getting back in. I purchased 2.0 when it first released and played a Monk up to about lvl 35, I think. Or maybe I just stayed as a Puglist, I can't remember. Whilst enjoying it, it never really stuck and became THAT game that I always wanted to hang around and dip in and out off. I then picked up the PS4 Complete Collection last year when Stormblood came out and I enjoyed it again, playing this time with some friends. I played a Thaumatage up to about 25 ish before life stuff getting busy and me dropping off. THIRD TIME IS A CHARM... i guess. As I recently did pick it back up again and purchased a subscription card on a whim (I live in Japan so I saw it in a konbini) and I jumped back in. It was tough and I just continued on with the lvl 25 Thaum that I had prior. WELL, since then I have been having an absolute blast and have got the Thaum into a Black Mage that's currently lvl 44, I'm pushing hard towards 50 so I can pick up the Samurai Job and also only doing both daily duty's and MSQ so I can power through the ARR stuff. Square Enix also sent me the Shadowbringers expansion so that I can talk about it when I eventually get to it, so that's given me even more inspiration towards pushing through everything. Even so (and general consensus seems to be that ARR is the weakest part), I am enjoying it immensely this time round. I even purchased it on Steam again through the sale so that I could level up whilst on lunch break at work! I'm happy to finally feel like it's sticking and I'm constantly excited about what's ahead with everyone raving about the expansions, especially Shadowbringers. It's such a great game.

Thread Fire Emblem Three Houses has ridiculously small Text (Update: Tim Rogers Retweet)
I don't seem to have any problem with the actual text of the conversational boxes. When characters are talking I can read it clear. But, all the other surrounding text, notifications, instruction boxes, stat boxes etc are all absolutely tiny and there's "usually" no need for it. Strange decision making, but was obviously part of the design from the beginning. Still that being said, I am loving the game.

Thread Games you remember, names you don't
All I remember was a kick ass CGI trailer at E3 once for it. I was surprised because it was a Wii title and it got me super hyped that the Wii might meet the graphics of the competitors (I was 15 and clueless lol).

Considering I was on this episode and literally sat across from Mark coughing in my face the whole time... haha. I can certainly confirm it is indeed him and he was very sick. There is also photo evidence!
