Thread Can someone explain the Nomura hate?
Nomura handles a lot of responsibilities and is a very customer facing figure which makes him the avatar for everything people like and dislike about Square, regardless of how much of it is actually his fault. I see people blame him for very particular design or plot decisions and its hilarious to me, as if any of you were actually in the room, games are a collaborative process and anything that is customer facing goes through an extensive review and signoff system, its not nearly as much of a "one man army" as people think. The cult of personality is a real thing in games and people will jump to wild conclusions just to justify their assumptions. Plus, funny how this works but somehow he's only to blame for things people like but not for things that they do like? Thats somebody else, I guess? Skills wise he is a tremendous, prolific artist (regardless of his belts phase). He can direct, conceptualize, design and handle creative decisions which is incredibly impressive. However

I used to think that ... back in 2000 when I was 18 and had never heard much rap before. I was wrong then and would be wrong now, thinking that way can also lead to dangerous racial ground later on if you dismiss stuff thats outside of your culture or race in such a reductive fashion.

Thread The Art of Street Fighter V
Thank you for making this thread, its a fantastic looking game and truly the best visuals in the genre right now ... its also the most misunderstood visually, but Ive been having these fights since SFIV, haha. This is the one game where people make the most assumptions about its art. On a personal note, Im not a fan of most of the season 1 and 2 character designs, like, at all, but I really appreciate that the costume changes are so indicative of the gameplay changes, as exemplary synergy between art and design.

The original drawing is obviously much better because it has care and attention behind it. What Butch is doing is doing a freehand copy/trace of the original drawing and then ink it separately (which he recorded). Whole process probably took about half an hour, while the original probably took about 8 ish hours. Either way, very shitty thing to do. Asshole.

Thread What was EA thinking with that Knockout City ad?
Weeeell, its not an EA game, its an indie game EA picked up, big difference. And yeah, watching it, it seemed obvious that the marketing team and the game team had nothing to do with each other, at all. This happens a lot with big studios and even more with EA where the game team is making the, you know, game and the marketing team, which is a whole other division within EA, does whatever they think they need to do to market the game.

Its such a strong story when these people havent seen each other for 30 years, when a Jedi hasnt tapped into the Force in so long that when one finally does its a huge deal ... but the way things are going, there were always Jedi around, making Luke very much just another dude, and Obi Wan and Vader were both probably to kill each other for a long time in between both trilogies. Thread The West Wing or House of Cards: which show has the Trump Administration ruined more?
For the sake of the discussion lets leave out the cast members that turned out to be horrible people. I could see West Wing being given a pass since its a bit older, but I have a real hard time looking at either show and taking them with any degree of seriousness or credibility after the last 4 years of the Trump administration making it nlatantly clear those “checks and balances” we held with any regard where, at its core, just there for marketing. Its not that House of Cards was going for realistic, mind you, but the shit Frank Underwood does in that show was meant to be what “taking it too far” looked like and it seems tame in comparison. In contrast, West Wing looks like Sesame Street grade naïveté, I know the show was optimistic by nature but wow, it lands very differently now. Im sure other shows and movies do not compare favorably either, but for some reason these two stick out to me. [edit: like VEEP, which I havent seen yet]

Super is incredibly badly written and power levels change per episode, often backwards and without any good reason. Stick to Z. Tracing reference will help you create finished art faster but of course it doesnt teach you how to draw better. That should be obvious. You’re not seeing the improvement you seek because you havent drawn for long enough yet and because you’re not engaging in methods and habits that build good foundations.

Sort of, in Ultimate is when it became clear. Yes and no, I have dealt with big name licensors in the past and it really depends on who is handling the negotiations at the time. This industry has a lot of churn so for a 2 year period you might get the “corporate shill” licensing agent that second guesses everything you do or you might get lucky and get someone who lets Capcom do their thing. These things go through cycles

In any case, the number one priority is for Capcom to have more of a say. It started with 3 but you can really tell Marvel was dictating the roster and it made for pretty forgettable, generic characters that blended with one another. I want funky choices that make each character look unique and different, not shit like Iron Fist where hes basically just Fei Long

Not to contradict my previous point but adding difficulty options IS a lot more work for the devs. Its way easier to make one game for one difficulty and polish the hell out of that experience than to design it for several difficulties and balance them all, it easily triples the workload and depending on the game and the studio size it could really mess with the budget. A lot of people here just act like its a simple "add difficulty" button in the game engine

So while I generally agree with this, this wording gets to me a little bit Thats not what people are typically asking for, they typically ask for accessibility features so that people who are not as abled as the intended audience can play the game at a difficulty that TO THEM feels the same as it feels TO YOU

Check out our archive!(goddamnit)PENtober is an art challenge were you are encouraged to make one ink (traditional or digital) based piece a day during the month of October. Nobody knows who started the challenge, some people say it was Hatsune Miku, but fuck all that because for this years edition we want to highlight the work and contributions to the medium made by . A fantastic inker and educator who deserves much more love and exposure He is very active on , this is just one random video I picked, no other reason He also has two inking books available on Amazon which you can find . I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing them and for you to use them throughout the month as a handy guide, you wont regret it. For them kids, 1) Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want). 2) Post it 3) Hashtag it with #pentober or #pentober2020 or do whatever the fuck you want, this shit aint owned by anybody, fuck them cops 4) Repeat Since I made the thread I'm going to be a total dick and sneak in my and pages where you'll be able to find my entries (as well as this thread, obviously) Last year I had a Fire Emblem: Three Houses theme! I am currently undecided about this years theme, better hurry the fuck up, I guess Mysteriously enough, there are NO OFFICIAL PROMPTS this year! I think there used to be some in previous year but I dunno, nothing came out for 2020, blame the pandemic, It was probably some white dudes fault though, tbh In case you need some though, I used my complete brain in order to come up with some prompts. I am a professional in the industry of videogames, I am extremely creative, how dare you, look at that beautiful logo If you want to skip a day, that's fine! If you want to do something non-traditional, that's great! This is all just an excuse for our little artist community to grown and thrive, we can get to know each other better and help each other fulfill our artistic goals. Do not take this too seriously, the rules are there to help you along the way, not to restrain you! Surely you have noticed a ... variety of October themed drawing prompts. Mysterious! Feel free to use this thread to share your work from those other hashtags or even better, cross them with pentober! Heres some examplesTheres also #kinktober which, yeah, try to NOT post that one in this thread, but I encourage you to participate! Also check out some other hashtags such as #DrawingWhileBlack, #VisibleWomen, #LatinxCreate and others. Amplify minority voices as often as you can! I think that's all the hashtags I've seen related to October, cant think of another one ...Absolutely! In this day and age there are a million ways to create art! Pen, Tablet, Cintiq, whatever way you want to participate is fine :)Hell no! Even if you only make one drawing, that's way better than zero drawings. We all have lives and cant always afford the time. Keep your own pace, there's no pressure here.Pretty much anything ink based, even a ball point pen can give you some amazing results, however that might help you. It can be a pretty big difference when youre young in the industry, actually, because you tend to be a lot more inconsistent. Andy got started in comics much earlier than Adam did, Adam went to medical school instead and back then young artists were just told to draw like Jim Lee. Plus, those spot illustrations back in the day for promo stuff were done in a really rushed manner, so its not a great comparison with how much time they get these days per book. Ive worked with Indian talent in the past, about 5 years ago or so. I found them to be incredibly hard working and very motivated by the industry as a whole. The challenge we faced was that, while Indian engineers are extremely capable, they just dont have a game development background, at all. We were making an RPG and we literally had to explain how extremely basic things work like "what poison does". Its not just a one off issue, we found this to be a persistent challenge throughout, at least back then. Not to say that things havent changed or cant change, but tackling a project of this caliber is very ambitious for that talent pool and hopefully they can deliver something good, but its going to be very difficult.

Inktober basically becomes free promotion so if you invest into it youll find new clients, avenues and future content you can sell. I know it has definitely been the case for me in the past. For me, my more detailed pieces take 2 hours which isnt long, if I didnt have a wife, 2 pets, one cat and a bunch of obligations I would be doing more intricate work and even then Im a little slower than Id like because my day job isnt always about producing art (especially lately) and its never about penciling or inking (Im all digital at work) so Im flexing different muscles when I do inktober

This reeks of entitlement, but putting that aside. Like others have said, games take time but also, games are NOT made in a linear way. you dont have 400 people teams at the beginning, you dont see all the prototypes or other ideas that got them to this point, you dont know how muchthe license holder was making them redo or even making them start over. For all you know they did try a Superman game for 4 years and it got cancelled, or maybe the technology challenges were too great until next gen came along, or a million other things. Making games = dealing with failure, and you dont typically use your failures as part of your hype campaign so I would REALLY recommend gamers to stop thinking like theyre game producers because theres just too many unknowns when you question why a studio hasn't released a game in 5 years Oh also, no gameplay shown doesn't mean there isn't any gameplay to show, it just means they thought this was the best way to start their marketing. Just cause you dont see it doesnt mean it isnt showable.

Thread Wow, King of Fighters XII really isn't great
I mean, if youre asking why they remade the sprites ... you sound like youre pretty out of touch regarding this subject, tbh. Fans were clamoring for KOF to finally be remade with modern art, the techniques they used were amazing and having such detailed sprites at that size was incredible at the time. In retrospect, their process was too costly and needed better tech so that they could ship a more feature complete game but thats really what happened, they had to ship something in order to recoup some of the investment and thats what KOF XII was, with XIII being the real game it was meant to be from the beginning ... and even then it wasnt enough to save them, having to reboot again for XIV which ... ugh, well, some people like it enough so Im not gonna shit on it, but it wasnt for me.

I dont think she is but I wonder if thats what ND was insinuating since an idle animation is a good chance at portraying a characters feelings. I remember the sore neck but it isn't the same as a sore shoulder and it seemed to be from shitty sleep not working out, all these characters go through hell in a daily basis so in theory they should all be stretching in their idle poses. Either way I didnt mean it to sound like I was insinuating a negative portrayal of her, so thats a good point by you and maybe a blind spot for me so thanks for pointing that out.

Thread EA not remaking the classic NFS games is baffling
Exceptions apply but traditionally it does not sell more. Remakes sell to a fraction of the fanbase of the original game, so that can put a hard cap on your sales estimates but a new game potentially attracts a much bigger, more current fanbase. For instance, if they made a -new- Hot Pursuit that catered to old fans and new as a brand new entry, that has a lot more potential sales than a HF2 remake (worked for EA for over 6 years, I know how they roll)

Its a bandwidth issue, EA has a lot of money but they dont have infinite teams, so the NFS team is busy working on new stuff and if they were to outsource a 3rd party to start doing HD remakes of stuff ... well, knowing how EA operates it would be come "a thing" and then you would get a bunch of red tape thrown at it and who knows when it would get done. EA generally means well and a lot of talented people work very hard, but sometimes they cant stop EA'ing all over themselves. I know its depressing but seeing the "oh no, not Insomniac" posts made me aware that, you know, Im sure 90% of every game company out there has stories like these and we need to stop thinking they dont. What were seeing here is further proof of systemic sexism in this industry and Im sure it permeates most other industries as well. One thing we have learned from the recent events is that its not enough to not be racist, you have to be anti racist. Same goes with sexism, dont get complacent when things seem "normal" you have to be active in fighting sexism. I didnt encounter much sexist behavior at EA (I myself reported a very troubling incident and it was resolved) but that doesnt mean its not happening and I could have done more to make sure it was an even better working environment for the women who worked there. Im sure lots of people at Insomniac are high quality human beings but they were clearly not taking forward action towards elevating the experience of the non white CIS employees. Some of it is malice but a select few, yes but Im certain most of it is the naivete afforded by the status quo. Dont be surprised if more stories come out, Im sure each big company has at least one current scandal like this, treat it more like the new normal, demand that these companies do better moving forward so we can start changing the culture for good.

Whatever your favorite game is, it was probably held together by wires and ductape and only shipped due to some kind of divine intervention and is two wrong steps away before it crashes all the way to oblivion. Thats the videogame industry. The bugs you see are the ones that didnt get fixed, the ones you DONT see are the ones that caused those big delays, those insane crunch stories and affected the biggest percentage of players. Since a players experience is obviously very personal, its hard to have the proper perspective that maybe the bug you experienced only reproduces for 0.3% of the playerbase, for example. Saying “didnt take the time” is reductive because it implies they dont care or were lazy which is ridiculous in both instances.

Thread What is "racism"? Are you racist?
This is a thread I thought about making myself, everyone has a history with how they deal with race, their own race and how they deal and interact with it on an everyday basis. As for me, I strongly believe in the positives of embracing our racial differences. I have been lucky to be raised by very different cultures, interacting with people from all backgrounds almost on a daily basis and it has afforded me a more global view of the world than most. That being said, I'm positive theres things about my demeanor that are influenced by race and some of them must have been/still be racist in some way, shape or form. I dont see it as avoidable, but rather as part of my continual growth as a person. Its not enough for to not be racist, which I dont think I am, but I need to also go beyond that and be an ally to those that I could be helping in my field, like what am I doing to make sure we are hiring more black artists? How can I help with training the next generation of black artists? (the numbers are still dismal in my industry) How much do I know about other cultures like people of Middle Eastern descent, do I fetishize stuff that comes from Japan? Am I falling for that trap so many people fall for in which they start painting Asia with a wide brush? I try to ask myself questions and reach out to the community as often as I can so I never assume "well, mission accomplished, not racist!" So yeah, its a process and my privilege has afforded me to approach this at whatever pace I choose ... which obviously its problematic in and of itself

For the lady making 160+k as a designer ... thats an insanely good paycheck for SF or LA. Great negotiating by her, you can get that kind of money by a combination of relevant experience, how badly they need you, how awesome you are and leveraging other offers against each other. Oculus was really, really aggressive with their hiring for a while and once you can capitalize on a number that high, it sets your value and contributions as "thats what we have to beat in order to get you to join" Some companies pay a lot lower in cash because their bonus structure is much more developed, such as Blizzard, which is why employees were so vocal about bonuses being cut last year. Bear in mind bonuses get more heavily taxed so a 10k bonus = 5.5k. Still good ... just not quite what you thought.

Typically we make new threads for new news instead of lumping stuff together into a megathread. For instance, sad as I am, I stopped paying attention to the thread about Hanas suicide, how else would I know the show was cancelled if no new thread was made Anyways, to the topic. Definitely unfortunate, I dont believe it was a show that was encouraging its viewers to act that way but when something so tragic happens you have to take responsibility so if this is the end of Terrace House for good, so be it. However, Japan needs to realize that the problem runs way deeper than TH, its a systemic issue in that country and if TH hadn't been a worldwide phenomenon who knows if this incident would have forced their hand as much as it did (take the other show that has more deaths, is still running, and I had not heard of it until this week)

Somebody who should really become a named character in a potential remake, Chrono's mother! Her original design, not seen in the sprite, is actually kind of buff. I loved that. yeah you’re obviously right, however the OP thinks he has the consensus opinion when in reality theres a lot more nuance and thought behind stuff. For instance, I highly doubt the dev team themselves want to make a game just like TYD, their output since proves it. Remember Sly Cooper 4? Thread The extremely high expectations surrounding the UE5 tech demo are concerning
Theres been a number of replies to my post along these lines. Its motivating ... to a point, the pressure to hit those benchmarks, even while understanding that R* and ND are a notch above is that it drives crunch. Anytime a new graphical milestone is hit, even if it was through dehumanizing your workforce, developers feel thats the new standard they need to reach and even if they dont get there, it still results in massive crunch for the team. Some opinions regarding the new UE5 pipeline could alleviate crunch, sure, its a marketing video meant to highlight the good parts, no surprise there. However, and plenty of developers have already voiced their opinions on this, just because one pipeline element may have been improved, it doesnt mean plenty others havent gotten more complicated. Even when it comes to using static meshes with x millions of polys, you now have to unwrap it and shade it as if it was a movie quality model, thats very different than a current gen model, so thats not exactly a time saver there. This is not to be cynical, shit looks dope, etc but remember, crunch is the number one problem in the industry ALREADY, pretty graphics are not a problem! Will the expectations set by this demo alleviate it or make it worse?

Thread Unreal Engine 5 Revealed! | Next-Gen Real-Time Demo Running on PlayStation 5
Visually very impressive but they way theyre handwaving the MILLIONS OF POLYS VIRTUALLY is a bit worrisome, for a production team that works natively in zbrush this is potentially GREAT news as it could really, REALLY improve your pipeline (making LODs and game ready versions of sculpts takes a ton of time) but if everything is movie quality then rigging and animating are going to take a very long time ... plus, the expectation of conistent level of detail is going to be a hard precedent to set. Their "solution" to this will be to rely on photogrammetry and libraries like Quixel because of course they would, thats a business model that benefits their partners and it is indeed to think "why should we make these cans and boxes and rocks when theres these libraries already"and thats true for a number of games, but for games that want to look more unique and less "from the shelf" it might be quite challenging to produce such a number of art assets at that level of detail. Anyways, so far great for the AAAA houses and might be able to seep up development, I see quite the challenge for studios that arent chasing photorealism ... but then again, these are early days and hopefully theres a variety of options there. The biggest thing these big engine releases can do is trivialize production time so the artists and engineers can spend less time working on annoying, non player facing content. Potentially not having to worry about LOD's and bone counts is exciting, but theres a whole lot of things that have to go along with that to truly make it viable and exciting for a dev.

Thread Should FFVIIR2 Run on UE4 or UE5
Yeah, depends on how compatible it is. I see that they say it is but ... well, that shit depends on the game and how its actually built. For instance, and because this is what I know, in Unity each update is of course compatible with itself, however, anytime you update your game to run to the latest version of Unity, shit routinely breaks and needs to be adjusted. So for instance, Im assuming that if you port 7R to Unreal 5, a bunch of shit would instantly not work, like perhaps the lighting algorithms are totally different or the shading architecture has changed so things "work" but not how you want them to, things like that Plus, even if its seamless its not like youre going to start importing your zbrush sculpts directly into the game. Thats a whole separate pipeline that impacts every single part of your art production process, so 7R part 2 wouldnt really be taking advantage of it. Final Fantasy XVI though, totes.

Crisis Core, it really helps you understand what SOLDIER First Class means, what Cloud was trying to be like and tying it into waiting to get the Aerith special that refills your life was one of the GREAT moments for me. Making Zack AWESOME is super super important so that when you play VII you realize that the hero of the JRPG that happened just before VII was everything Cloud wants to be, that way you can truly deconstruct the genre and the tropes from there. 7R will hopefully be able to do that even moreso

I never played it but never felt the need to as I was a big fan of the original, I dont see how the Ocelot boss fight even works if you can just ... see him and .. point at him .. Anyways When a developer agrees to take on a game that is owned by someone else, its part of the developers responsibilities to negotiate features, development changes and collaborate with the IP holder. Thats part of the job and it takes skill, you dont know exactly who is to blame for precise things, it could be a case of Kojim being at fault but also SK for not implementing his vision and feedback correctly, or maybe it was SK for not knowing HOW to deal with Kojima and his requests. Having worked for Star Wars, I can tell you that managing the relationship with Lucas is a key component of whether things will go well or badly for the game. These threads always run the risk of people saying PS! LOL or LOL ... sigh, everytime For 7R, those screenshots look bad but I also never noticed them until I came to this thread. Beat the game last week and thought it was a thoroughly gorgeous. Im sure I could find those screenshot locations if I wanted to, but they seemed to be in areas that werent prominent. Even then, the reality is that making everything in your game be perfectly consistent is pretty much impossible, much better to focus most of your efforts on the areas the player will spend the most time in and do your best on filling up all the in between, otherwise youll never ship or youll add a legit extra year of dev time that could be better spent on something else. Point of advice, at worst those textures look PS3 level (and even then its not so much the textures, the models are acting funky and looks like the shader isnt working properly), when you go hyperbole heavy with PS1/2 comparisons it feels like youre arguing in bad faith.

Not gonna turn these into a batch as the thread is winding down. Thank you all so much for your questions, its been a really fun couple of days!Well, being very nice and being very good to your employees doesnt have to mean you make all the right decisions about making games, lol Plenty of amazing games are made by horrible people in horrible circumstances, obviously youd like the best environment to make the best games but the two barely ever correlate Also, if EA's output was abysmal and they put out "so many blunders" the company wouldnt be thriving like it is, dont be like thatI usually travel to Spain for family or to Japan for leisure, been there about 5 times now. I also tend to help out my wife with her art business, a toy company called, as often as I can so I'm a booth helper at many cons anytime theres a 3/4 day weekend... that tends to take a lot of my "vacation time" Now that Im coming back home though, its going to expand my traveling options since I'll be able to see my family much more often! I really want to visit South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, etc and also show my wife were I used to live in Mexico. Vegging out at home and playing videogames for a week is also nice, though Changing jobs is exhausting and moving up at my old company was definitely a possibility but ... well, being an Art Director in Sacramento isn't exactly as alluring to me as being an Art Director in Barcelona. Plus, in this business if you want to get a good bump in salary and position, getting a new job is def the way to go, companies tend to take talent for granted and keep them in the same position about as 3x longer than they should have. Its also good to change things up and keep challenging yourself, that is very much the way I am wired, though. Some people do prefer to stay in one place and grow from there, especially if they already live in a place they want to set roots in ... but thats very subjective. I have moved all over the world since I was a child so this feels natural to me, for some others though, moving from SF to LA is a world shattering event that they may never adapt to As for starting my own company ... eh. I know how to run an art team, I have no fucking clue how to run a company. That kind of entrepreneur spirit is something you either have or you dont ... and even then you need to find the right partners (a money person, an investor, a producer, a world class engineer willing to risk their career, etc, etc), save a shit ton of money, be able to accept giant risks, like going without health insurance for a considerable time and I am not about that life right now, in the slightest

14th BatchSuch is the struggle! Its specially crazy for you two, you deserve a lot of respect and I hope things are going well during this crazy time!A ton! In terms of game art: Yoshida, Amano, Nomura, Akiman, Daigo, Yusuke Naora, Snakepixel, Bengus Edayan, Nishimura, Jen Zee, Fellipe Martens, Pascal Blanche, Justin Cherry (Nephelomancer), Kekai Kotaki, Shinkawa, Gez Fry, Peet Cooper, Grace Liu and a lot more, especially unnamed people, lots of animators too, especially at places like FROM, Capcom, Square and Nintendo! Outside the industry I love Bengal, Moebius, Marcos Mateu Mestre, Kim Jung Gi, Toriyama, Takehiko Inoue, Frank Miller (in his prime), Kentaro Miura, Taiyo Matsumoto, Miyazaki, Katsuya Terada, Juanjo Guarnido, Julia Sarda, Djamila Knopf, Mingjue Helen Chen, , Sara Alfageeh, incase (NSFW artist), Otomo, Rumiko Takahashi, JAN, ... I can go on and on As for general inspiration, FLCL is my favorite anime and I love The Pillows because of it, lately Im listening to a ton of Reol and the games that inspire me have been Persona, Monster Hunter, NieR, Dark Souls, BotW and so on. I am also re-reading Bakuman, a manga about making manga by the Death Note team and its super inspiring to me. Movies like Kill Bill were also a giant adrenaline shot for my creativity. When I was a kid, games like Out of this World and Monkey Island were 100% my jammmm well I did get fired from EA once, LOL and most studios I have ever worked at have closed, so theres that! Going to The Kubert School only to change my degree to a 2D animation one at the same time as Brother Bear came out and killed the US animation industry for 10+ years was definitely a move that could have backfired. I really, really struggled when I entered casual and I was really, really late in becoming any kind of proficient at coloring. I think realizing at an early age that the amount of sacrifice needed to become a top 1% artist would mean sacrificing my personal life was a good move but I definitely feel like I havent reached my full potential yet. As for successes, Ive been pretty lucky to be surrounded by great peers and I could always reach to very skilled individuals if I needed advice. Winning a character design contest at Square Enix in the early 2000's was awesome, they event sent me a poster signed by Nomura. Having Capcom pick my entry for the SF IV cover was amazing, as was being published by Udon on one of their Megaman books, Id never thought I would go to Japan, go to a bookstore and find a book I worked on in the shelves, thats crazy Also the whole Star Wars thing, crazy lucky. I prepared myself for it and did a good job, but getting that chance in the first place and getting the job on the first try while being the only person they interviewed? Theres luck in there Oh I also was the only texture artist when Tiger 07 was ported from the PS2 to the Wii, that shit was all me baybeeNah I love the industry. There were dumb people then and theres dumb people now, thats just how it is. Yeah most devs dont play their own games because most games are NOT GOOD. Remember, what you see on ERA is a tiny, tiny percentage of the actual game industry and Id say that, on average about 50% of the people at a games stuidio dont play games regularly The only games Ive worked on that I played regularly were Skullgirls and Galaxy of Heroes. I havent even touched Indivisible yet. While we make these games we do play them lik,e all the time and youre just tired of the whole thing when its out, plus, again, its probably not a good game regardless of how good a job you did.Ya ves, nadie es perfectoYeah I love him and I love that his loose style has been so embraced by fans. Its a shame its no longer the cover of the games though, thats a definite step back by the publishers and Kojima himselfAmazing benefits, I missed the hell out of them anytime I wasnt working for EA. Good bonuses, great ways to get stock, really good 401k, amazing insurance, great pet insurance too ... the works, they even have daycare at the bigger studios. Top notch company.Anime is not a style, I think you already know this. You gotta look at your sources of inspiration. Then you gotta look at your training. Your style will emerge from mixing the two Even then, I dont have -one- style, look at my portfolio and you will see its very varied! You dont have to worry about it so much, just draw what you are passionate about, build a large library of visual imagery and always work on your fundamentals, your style should develop natively from there That being said, if you feel like youre stuck in a rut its probably because you draw the same thing all the time. Try copying a different kind of artist that you like and see if you can replicate their style! Focus on drawing from life for a few months and see what your weakest areas are, maybe its hands or feet? A style is really a stylization of realism so its wholly dependent on how good your fundamentals are. In Japan, most manga creators are master craftsmen first, having done hardcore anatomy training, then, when they mix it with their own taste is how they develop a unique look. For me, I grew up in Spain with European graphic novels but also while watching anime and reading Marvel comics so I have a natural mix of all three kind of built-inSkullgirls was definitely my favorite. I always dreamed of making a fighting game and it was a thrill to be a part of it, however small my role was. The Spanish game industry is still pretty damn new and it has grown to the point where I think I can go and make significant contributions. 5 years ago it still felt like it was mostly run by people who gave zero shits about making games and only wanted to make quick money ... and in a way it still is but now theres a chance to really start growing the talent pool there so we dont all have to leave our home country in order to make it.Think of it this way, depending on the kind of game youre making, there will be a limit of things you can put on-screen before the engine or codebase goes "thats enough, im dying" thats your budget and, just like allocating items in your Resident Evil inventory, theres a finite amount of shit you can fit in there. You want realtime lighting? OK, but it takes a large chunk of processing power. Oh, you want 20 characters in screen? well we can no longer light them in real time, so pick one. Oh, you want depth of field? If we add it now, it'll just crash the game, the systems werent build with something that would blur the items in real time, maybe we can fake it with blurry textures? Ok but a blurry texture may take too much of our texture budget. Texture budget? what if I lowered the resolution of the characters by half? Yeah maybe but now we cant have closeups of the characters because they look like shit ... mmm, well maybe we make some room in the budget by simplifying our shadows. What do you mean? Oh, our shadows are actually a duplicate of the mesh with a back texture and scaled down on y. Wait, so were basically showing each character twice? Yep. So, instead of 20 characters on screen WE HAVE FORTY? Yep. WTF??? Hey man, it looks good, you want blob shadows instead? No. Ah ok then, maybe we can lower the density of thew shadows and see if they look ok. Yes pls, do that.... Those are real conversations that happen inside a studio. The budget in mobile is set to the lowest common denominator device you support so eventhough the iPhone 11 is fucking sweet you have to make sure that the game runs on some shitty Android phone because they still account for 30% of the money we make and we cant start making separate graphic settings per phone, it would add way too much overtime for the team. We constantly think about what we can add, what we can cut, what we can improve all while making the game at the same time. Its very, very difficult to make broad changes specially once you have shipped a game, too!Theyre fantastic. I love that theyre changing stuff with SoR 4 since its a SEQUEL and thats what they should be doing, trying to reach new heights. I also loved what they did with Dragons Trap, just excellent execution all around and they know how to make good art that doesnt get in the way of the gameplay. It depends if its a focus area for the developers. AI hasnt really improved much over the years as it seems to be less of a focus since multiplayer seems to have taken over. The potential for great innovation is always there and the new tech certainly can enable it, but a developer needs to make it their selling point in order to set a precedent other companies have to follow. No gifs to share but Im sure with raytracing there is going to be some cool shit, I have especially high hopes for companies like Square Enix, FROM and Capcom, that can, and should, showcase their creative flair

13th BatchIm sure they will eventually, I think they rushed their way through the IP and once the team was completely disbanded they just altogether abandoned the series. Wanting DS3 to compete with the Call of Duty crowd was a pretty bad mood, imo. You isolate your original fans and dont gain new ones because CoD players will just ... keep playing CoD. If Viosceral had stuck around, I could see a comeback sooner than later, as it is now ... eh, probably not anytime soon. You ... are not wrong :)Dayum, thats quite the student portfolio! You definitely have a good shot at landing a job after your graduate, however, competition is pretty fierce. I think your use of lighting is pretty high contrast right now which I totally understand for your Atlantis piece but in the early stages I actually liked your use of color early on and you lost some of it during your final polish. Out of your references, I think you need to study Dishonored 2 more closely,, I always prefer when shadows have a color tint to them instead of going more black. Using color theory more strongly will help both your realistic work and your more cartoony efforts Color and lighting wise, your Zoelie environment is a good example of where you can get a lot better. Look at some of the Overwatch environments, Sunset Overdrive and Tekkkon Kinkreet for visual reference. Your shadows could have a lot more color to it, the tend to extend very far and look more realistic than they need to be, your texture work is also exposed a bit more and just using flat colors isnt working very well for you there. POverall, your sense of storytelling could be more finely tuned. You added some chaos and puddles to your museum environment, but I still dont have a clear idea of what happened there, I think more exhibits should be broken, I should be able to see water physically leaking into the environment, I think we should see some water damage and some dead creatures splattered on the floor somewhere. Make it seems even more like theres room for discovery, right now everything is very evenly disheveled where you should be thinking in terms of "this corner has lots of damage and the lights went out" while "this one is practically untouched" that way you get the contrast and the viewer will start to be naturally more intrigued I could go deeper but this isnt the best place for a full portfolio review. I would encourage you to try more styles, though! Something in the Monster Hunter World vein, perhaps? Maybe Gravity Rush 2?Personal taste goes a long way and also level of execution. I think Hollow Knight looks GREAT and it wouldnt look better if it was traditional pixelart, same with Odin Sphere, its the perfect marriage of styles in order to produce something unique. You gotta cater your artstyle to the talents of the developer, so I dont often think they should have done something different because then it just wouldnt be the same developer, you know? That being said, King of Fighters XIII was the pinnacle of the series art and the new 3D stuff is still nowhere near their level of excellence and anytime I hear people comp[lain that they can "see the sprites" I want to slap them. I get similarly angry when people dont like a more stylized effort because "it looks like a flash game" both camps make me angry .. you just gotta learn how to deal A 2D Mario sprite in HD could look like a million different things, depends on who you put to the taskHavent tried Dreams yet, Im not super into "make your own stuff" games, I'll just go draw my own thing, you know? Engines are not nearly the be all end all solution non devs think it is. Just because you have a giant, awesome kitchen it doesnt mean youre goingg to make awesome food, right? Same with engines, they enable possibilities but its up to the developer to be able to get the engine to work in their favor. Tools are often not improved because the stakeholders cannot stand the time it takes to work on tools. Why? Because tools development is invisible to higher ups, its "let us build the tech and youll see results in 3 months" and thats usually not acceptable, they need to see progress in a tangible manner ASAP. Also, the iphone 11 having crazy ass resolution, forcing us tio display giant textures that eat the entire VRAM budget has very little to do with the engineEh, thats a nice compliment but I dunno about that LOLThank you! Its been pretty fun being able to let loose. Hopefully some people are learning some shitMerging these two, this is a big one, haha It seems like you have gotten enough schooling and, without seeing your work its hard to make an accurate assesment. However, I can share what has worked for me. I made a few images to help illustrate a process Ive used in the past Lets say I drawthis image, ready to start coloring but I have nooo fucking clue how to start What I do here is look at other pictures I like and borrow their color scheme! Its ok! Use it to learn and get started, literally color pick the main colors as a place to learn what good colors are For this, right now Im obsessed with so lets use this awesome piece of hers as a starting place for colors btw I highly recommend just using one or two brushes, dont go crazy with your brush use, master the basic round brush! As you can see I picked the key colors and put them in the places where they would fit naturally, thankfully I was right and these are great choices for this piece, then its just a matter of putting some work in and actually paint a bit more. This is just five minutes, Im not gonna repaint this whole thing just for a tutorial lol As you get more experience, then you start branching out and you make the image your own. This process is great to build your own internal library of colors, learning what to use for highlights, shadows, etc is super important. I also recommend painting with very broad strokes at the beginning, making sure youre zoomed out! For me, this is how the piece ended up when I originally made it (I didnt reference any colors for this one, btw, the ref before was just as an example) This is also the advice I always, always give when choosing colors, CHANGE YOUR HUES AS YOU GO DARKER OR BRIGHTER So yeah, this is just one way to get better. I always advise people to keep their hot and cool contrast in mind. When it comes to value, I suggest having a top layer set to the COLOR layer style and filled in BLACK. With that youll have a perfect grayscale image (do not ever use hue and saturation to check your values, its not accurate!) Its a great way to quickly check your values on the fly I hope this helps!I use Unity the most, however due to the kinds of games I work on I barely ever get to use any of the cool shit because the aret budget gets used up real fucking quick when you have 12 characters on screen at a time, etc Unreal 4 seems really dope, Ive only messed with it every now and then but I really respect itIts fucking amazing! It definitely requires a specific workflow and it also requires a LOT of buy-in from the studio leads, being able to risk such a large investment ahead of time. This industry is so goddamn risk averse in AAA that it drives me nuts. I have a ton of respect for what that team accomplished and I hope its something they can continue to build on moving forwardNot at all! At EA, our Junior VFX artist just turned 40 and hes fairly new to the industry, he spent his 20's working at Sunglass Hut. Show that you have value and youll make it inA Profanity Filter as part of the OS sure would be nice! Did you know that there isnt a standard solution for that yet and that every team basically needs to make their own for EVERY GAME? Its ridiculous, a standard OS based subtitles solution would also be VERY welcome Having more systems built into the console are always helkpful but it can also limit the developer a fair bit so I get why some things are the way they are. As a developer its also hard not to think of console features as a user though, so when navigating the OS is super slow and install times take forever or the fan is super loud, that also affects how the user experience varies from game to gameUgh, yeah. Persona 4 Golden too, they had these nice, artsy moody backgrounds and then replaced them with photoreal bushes and shit, like, whyyy would you do that.Like I said, I do have a NSFW account and am a hard believer that people need their horny outlet as long as its healthy and within the realm of fantasy. Porn will always find a way so I wish we could find more streamlined, healthier ways to integrate into our lives without having to find ass backwards ways to find it. Whenever one avenue closes, another one will open up, its kind of annoying but its inevitable. Theres a lot of hypocrisy going on from these platform holders re: adult entertainmentThings are great! Like most we are dealing with this situation one day at a time :) Crowdfunding is definitely a new avenue and it has found a semi healthy lane to live in ... but its had its obstacles, for sure! One thing I noticed early on is that it was on full display how game makers are NOT GOOD AT DEADLINES EH, MAYBE PRODUCERS ARENT SO EVIL AFTER ALL EH. There was, and is, a lot of promising the entire moon in order to get stuff funded and it makes me sad knowing that fans will fall for it. 90% of KS projects I see, I know they will be delayed by at least a year and most of the stretch goals are bullshit. It makes me mad knowing what the true costs of thing is and then I see some idiot promising a Switch port for 50k. Its really fucking unethical and naive As far as communication styles go, it entirely depends on the teams policies, culture and type of game youre making. For EA and Star Wars we cant divulge a ton of stuu, mostly due to the contracts we have in place and also because oftentimes there is such a thing as too much information that people will continue to misunderstand and weaponize against you Plus, as you can probably tell, the more time I spend talking to you, the less time I have to actually, you know, make the game. I get very, very wary at giving the consumer more ownership over the product I make and the more you communicate the more of a sense of ownership you give them, just look at most Destiny threads, people there legit think they know how to make the game better than the people making it. For smaller games I think it can be pretty healthy to communicate with the fans and as long as its not a live game you can make some meaningful relationships, SPryfox has always been very open about their development pipeline and it has worked pretty well for them

15th BatchSure, its important to bring it up though, lots of people still dont understand the difference. Hope you found the feedback useful!Ive seen a lot more people showcase their Scrum Master titles around. Its definitely useful when applying because we do discuss how much experience or knowledge a manager has with agile development tools and its not like you can show a portfolio to show how awesome you are.Yeah same here, then I get irrationally fucking angry when I see people take them for granted. Makes me feel like a giant failure LOLThank you! I worked on Galaxy of Heroes which is the SW mobile game, it has done extremely well, nearing one billion in revenue! We recently released a few Mandalorian characters and I was the art lead on those, but if you play the game you have seen my work and direction all over the place. I looove Star Wars, like most fans my hype died with the prequels but the new trilogy brought me back ion a serious way. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to be able to work on that agme and the awesome people at Lucasfilm. If you want to get into audio theres tons of avenues, not just as a composer but as a sound effect artist, foley, etc! Fire up some Unity tutorials and get started, maybe find a small local indie game you can help with? Getting started at ANYTHING is always daunting but theres never been a better time but all the free resources you have available. Best of luck!Yeah using the term budget always makes non devs think we mean money. In a Q&A for SW we recently said a particular mode would be expensive to make and fans literally thought it was just a money thing ... sigh Obviously money does come in at some point, like if a feature takes 5 people two weeks, thats a lot of cost! Maybe have 2 people over 3 weeks? Much better... but even in that case we talk about the time budget or even number of available cycles per employee. There are many different kinds of budgets and it is hard to keep track, thats why sometimes we simplify it and say a feature/change/fix is "very heavy" or "very expensive" because its taking all of those random bullshit time sync into account "we can't spend more than X dollars / Y months on this or else it won't be profitable" happens all the time with everything. Every feature in a game is like making a mini videogames, after all. If something takes too long, then it doesnt ship and then it affects how much money we can make. Specially in live this is a very important part of our pipeline we need to carefully leverage when agreeing to do "x" amount of work for a releaseThis comes off as a question very much in bad faith so Im inclined not to answer .. but eh, fuck it Are F2P gacha games as a whole, unethical? Yep. Is it ridiculous that $20 in SWGOH barely gets you 5 shards of a character? Yep. Is SWGOH completely playable and better than 95% of the competition when it comes to "here is how much you can achieve without spending money?" Also yep. I think you may have a bigger problem with the whole concept of Capitalism than SWGOH itself. If you are addicted to spending money on the game, I would highly suggest you get in touch with the support team and get your account deleted. Your statement as a whole is vindictive and reductive so I just cant take it at face value. My conscience is quite clear on this, we made a game that a ton of people enjoy in a healthy manner and the in-game economy reflects the state of the mobile industry which is not something I can fix myself. If people with an addictive personality get sucked in and put their financial future at risk, I would hope they quit the game immediately and seek help.I would love to read them! Nothing can beat the Iwata Asks archive, though

Thread Where the hell are the remakes of Final Fantasy V and VI?
IV is much MUCH more beloved in Japan than VI ever was. VI is not regarded as a giant success in Japan. You probably did not intend this but a thread like this a few weeks after VIIR comes out reads at worst entitled and at best spoiled I dont think those games will ever get a AAA remake. VII is the exception and will probably remain that way. Trials of Mana level remakes are a possibility but that would be a bummer for me.

Hey fellas, quick heads up. Friday was my last day at EA! Im taking a gamble on a crazy new opportunity in Spain so, while leaving SWGOH really hurts cause I love the team and what we were doing (Mando content being just a sample of what were up to) it was too good a chance to ignore, I’ll be returning home after more than twenty years away. I’ll get my tag fixed when I start next week I’ll still play the game as I have been though, its a good one.

Thank you guys! You enabled me to go in-depth once it became clear my posts here wouldnt leak to reddit (not that I shared anything outlandish anyways) Interacting with the community in a meaningful role was just one of the awesome opportunities EA gave me. I’ll be staying in mobile yeah, that seems very much my lane by now. I’ll be an Art Director for Scopely in their new Barcelona studio. My game wont be a SWGOH competitor but I could be moved to one in the future, you never know

11th Batch. This has been super fun so far, yall, thank you!At Kiwi/SGN/Jam City I did work with writers since we were building your casual storytelling based world builder style games. At EA we dont have a lot of writing for SWGOH and writing is handled by the design team, but its not like they have no skill, either, theres some good writers there I havent been in a great position to be in a game where theres a clear head writer for me to throw ideas around with. I think a good writer for games would highly benefit from coming up in the design or art pipeline as there is SO MUCH to gain there and you can cater your writing to be much more inline with the gameplay instead of "insert wall of text here"Depends entirely on you. Im not build for freelance, I do better when I have some job security. I did freelance for a year and while I was LUCKY to work on Steambirds, Skullgirls and more ... it was just too stressful knowing that I needed to always be looking for the next paycheck, remind companies to pay on time and take up any job just in case the market dried up. OIn the flipside, I know some people that only do client work and fucking thrive doing it, being able to make more money, buy fancy things and take cool vacations. It makes me wish I was more like that, to be honest. I just LIKE being in a studio and making a little work family, you know?Yeah, every now and then. Nothing as dramatic as a bowl of pasta but a lot of snot has made its way into my illustrations .. in that case you get a paper towel and slowly drain out the fluid, let it dry and try not to touch it so the pencil doesnt smear. Once you take it digitally you fix it upOf course! Happy to provide something to pass the time :)Most recently, when we introduced the Ebon Hawk in SWGOH I made a really cool event image for it where it was flying a bunch of Sith Fighters which left behind a blue trail, framing the image. It was rad! However, we decided the Ebon Hawk would not use our event system after all, so there was no need for the image. Shame. Worse thing is, I cant even show you A lot of the "aw shucks" pieces come during the exploration phase when you dont know what your game looks like yet, kind of the "what ifs" Like, for a while I worked on restaurant game and my pitch was to make it feel like a Ghibli movie. I made the lineart to prove my point and, if we liked it, would have gone full color but we killed the idea, leaving this in its wake :(Happy to provide something of value during the pandemic!I would hope so! Pre rendering backgrounds are expensive (test renders are time consuming, final renders even moreso) and not very future proof though, as the recent VII/III/IX remaster can attest so thats a definite challenge. Maybe something with upscaling via machine learning could make them viable again? I could see a game making those kind of backgrounds with set camera angles but rendering them in realtime. Thats certainly something I could see a AA game company do on the PS5 EA is always, always making prototypes for cool game experiences. Do they ship? Not most of them, are people interested in making them? Absolutely. EA has some awesome leaders at the helm right now and theyre people I trust to make good decisions, hopefully a year from now you have a better opinion of their output.Thank you! I am very much in love with the medium still and I am always playing 2/3 games at the same time. Right now its FF VIIR, Shibuya Scramble and ACNH. My relationship with games has certainly changed over time but so does the industry. I like most genres and Im always looking for new things to play so I have not become a cynic yet, I also dont veer towards massive time syncs so you will barely ever see me play over 100 hours on a single game, Id much rather play the ten hours it takes to play something new than hours 120 through 130 of Destiny. Many, many things inspire me, my hobbies outside of work are playing sports (soccer, bball, climbing, tennis) and I also practice boxing. I love reading manga (re-reading Bakuman right now) and of course watching anime like Haikyuu, BNHA and shit like that. Im also studying Japanese in my free time! Its a good thing for any artistic person to get into hobbies outside of their usual norm, itll allow you to draw from different areas of life. Artists I admire: Moebius, Yoshida, Daigo, Akiman, Nomura, Bengal, Snakepixel, Taiyo Matsumoto, etc etc, I try to keep a good curated amount of cool stuff on my twitter (plus compliments I get cause Im fucking vaaain)You know, I almost worked on Dead Space, I was on that team for about a week! The Tiger Woods PS2 games were technically AAA but ... shit, I dont think Ive ever worked on a legit AAA game. I mean, Galaxy of Heroes has made more money than almost any AAA game ever sooo theres that :P Tech discussions are great! At the end of the day, even for devs its all conjecture even after they get the devkits. Often when a game company gets a new devkit for a new console its a bit of an arms race to see who can get it to even fucking work before other companies do. I think having good discussiuons about tech in this forum are great because somebody will eventually be able to turn it into something they can expand onI did, I feel like Im pretty far but then I noticed Im probably like less than halfway through. I liked it, it played great and has a unique art style but ... something about it made me lose my grip after a coup[le of weeks, to the point where now I dont have much desire to go back to it. Im not advocating it to be shorter but, for instance, take Souls games, even when I drop them Im always pining to return to them. Hollow Knight Im more like "yeah I played a bunch, I got it, Im good"Not very much. If youre at a small startup they are much more up in your business and theyre annoying as fuck to deal with, like they feel like they need to approve every single thing but like, at EA I dont ever hear from the GM or Lead Producer. They trust in the work that we do and only if something major happens do they have an opinion about the artIt is and it isnt. The stories you hear are true but ... this industry is much bigger than people think. Every iOS game, every steam game ... thats a lot of people and just because they dont get an OTT in ERA or have a gamefaqs page it doesnt make them any less real or valid. Its a good industry full of amazing people and a lot of amazing experiences. That being said, for yourself, focus on what you WANT to do and when and if the time comes to work for a particular studio, due your due diligence (Glassdoor is a good strart) and take it from there. On the technical side, is it hard? Well, if you want to make a game by yourself its fucking overwhelming but otherwise ... its not so, so bad, just find what you wanna do and find out how to get good at it, dont worry about the true nature of polygons too much just yet, just know that a polygon with more than 4 sides is broken and will not workIve had to bend to some requests I knew were dumb, like making a character wear a cowboy hat eventhough everyone involved knew it wouldnt be approved. But .. overall nothng all that weird, art in games is a collaboration, not a client and we dont have to just accept any and all requests if we think theyre a waste of time. At EA Salt Lake though, for a while, we were working on this Gardens game which featured Tanukis and me, knowing that the studio is/was mostly Mormon, went ahead and drew the Tanukis with the (much needed) GIANT BALLS just to see what the reactions from the more conservative folk would be. I think THEY would say that was pretty weird. Im also kind of into weird shit, so my barometer for weird is probably brokenugh, were you in New Orleans? Know Shawn Peters? I was in NY. Hope things are well!Leaks mostly happen because of outsourcing. That random company you have making concept art just doesnt give the same amount of shits about confidentiality. Most games in this industry get cancelled, Id say about 70% of them, even if its a made-up stat it feels true. Iteration does, eventually bring out high quality work but so, so much concept art gets thrown in the way there its unbelievable ... and youll never see it. Spryfox, one of my favorite companies to have ever worked for, say it best. They know that only one out of every ten games has a chance at successPlease do! Would be glad to helpEh, Ive done it all, really. For Steambirds I was doing ... everything, models, environments, implementation, lighting. When you join a bigger team you just find the things you can help the most with. In SWGOH I was both a 2D artist and I made the cinematics myself in Unity and implemented them myself, which were complicated because they were made using our battle engine. For Kiwi we didnt have an engine so eventually I learned how to implement all the art myself via Jawa code ... ugh, still annoys me, haha Anyways, yes, agree, HD games are a steaming pile of shit processes and a complete waste of manpower. Companies should invest 3x the amount they do on processes and tech that can improve the implementation pipelines. So, so much fucking time in gamedev is just spent fucking WAITING for shit to work instead of workingIts ... kind of wasteful but I dunno, its kind of cool too plus, its probably needed for the license holder to be happyI personally wont be touching a PS5 or an XbXbxbsriesxboxx anytime soon but, in my experience, devs just arent that great at optimizing as a whole. I remember looking at how well Nintendo games were optimized when I was ripping them to an HDD and then being shocked at how BIG fairly minor games by third party devs were. Anyways, nextgen will of course make things easier for a little while but then some unreasonable company like Rockstar, Projekt Red, Squenix or Naughty Dog will make something that fires the fucking thing and setting a new standard other companies will feel obligated to follow, fucking it all up in the process.I havent made any Xenogears fanart for like, 20 years and I would have LOVED to work on that game. Most recently though, and I really, really wish I would have worked on it

12th BatchI own a PSVR unit and use it sporadically! Tetris Effect was really my jam for a good few months. Unfortunately, the barrier of entry needs to drop significantly, it needs to be twice the resolution, it needs to be completely wireless and it needs to be way more fully integrated into a consoles OS. I want to watch wrestling in VR or to recreate famous soccer matches in VR. I want every games to all have basic VR functionality because its not going to be all gimmicks, having a traditional game with a VR headset as a means to look around would be great, Id be happy just with that! It has a bright future but another quantitative jump needs to be made stillThank you! Glad it was helpful :)I wanted to be as honest as possible, not that Im usually not, but a company filter always happens when you work for someone, even if you dont actually have it, people place it on you sometimes. Obviously you never want to reveal too much, because people can often weaponize that information but as far as general "heres how the industry actually works" theres a lot fans could learnIn my last two and a half years at EA nobody, at any point, has ever mentioned Dino Crisis in any capacityMy Wolves hype died exactly the second Rubio's ACL tore trying to defend Kobe Havent watched much NBA since, to be honest. Those were good times, though!Hi! Thanks for dropping by and sharing your experience! I should have made sure to say that these are only MY experiences and that I can still be wrong about a lot of the things I say but I am glad you found some common ground. The root problem artists face is that they dont have enough artists in leadership positions to influence decision making. Most companies I go for I'll go to leadership meetings to find 4 managers, 3 producers, 2 designers, two engineers and one artist ... so that person will get downvoted all the time. When I left EA I made sure that in those meetings we had at least 3 art reps at all times which greatly reduced the number of annoying art requests that were coming down the pipelineNo problem! Here at ERA we have the excellent Art Self Study thread with TONS of resources, give it a look!Yeah, Gameloft was my least favorite job by a country mile. I hope youre somewhere you enjoy now!Outside of making stages in Smash and a few Mario Maker levels, cant say that I have. I've certainly met a few level designers and learning how to block out a level in 3D can be very useful and a good learning tool. Do you have mod tools available? Maybe it would be easier to start by modding some other games with a more robust level editing set? Technical skills can be learned at any time but level creation skills need repetition and playtesting, so find out which communities have a good mod scene. I can also ask some designer friends of mine and check back with you, if thats alright?Complicated question and unsure answer. Maybe? The game industry already deal with the voice actors guild so its not as UNHEARD OF as they like to think it is ... but good luck. Videogames is basically carny bullshit and I dont think youre ever going to find the kind of mass agreement you need in order to actually make it happen. Even if the US government stepped in and laid out some ground rules, what would stop companies from outsourcing to companies in some other country? I see a lot of blind idealism from younger gamedevs on this issue and I wish them the best but .. I just dont see a feasible way to get where they want. The one thing that can fix crunch is more rules, more transparency and more accountability. A more educated userbase will make better decisions and a more transparent process will bring out these shameful practices to light.I find a lot of people dont know how to practice very well, often drawing the same thing over and over and over again. Practicing art is like working out, you cant just do pushups forever, the body will get used to them and youll get stronger much slower. Same with art, try drawing different things from different perspectives with different styles! That will give you less high quality art at the beginning but a MUCH higher return on investment! I personally get a little embarrassed when I see people draw the same thing over and over again, then try to hide the fact that they cant draw a chair to save their lives or draw a character with a different facial complexion. Its VERY important to step out of your comfort zone and draw the things youre AFRAID to draw! The SECOND time will be SO MUCH better than the first! You have to be a bit courageous about it, but so many artists are sooo sensitive that they only do that stuff when being forced to. I attribute this quote to Miyamoto but I believe he was citing someone else when he said that growth always hurts. Even when your body is growing, the act of your bones extending is physically painful so no matter what you do in life, the process of growing and learning will always come with pain at the beginning. I think about that often, especially when Im trying something new and I, a longtime pro, am NOT used to art not looking like my standards! Then I remember to just get the fuck over it, try again and boom, always better That being said, and speaking as a bit of a devils advocate by nature. I always tell people to draw what interests you first and expand later, because you should drain all the fun out of your process for the sake of learning. For instance, once I learned about perspective, I started laying out perspective grids before drawing and holy shit, thats the "right" way to do it but it suuucked for me, my art looked incredibly lifeless and boring. What I do now is Ill draw the scene loosely the way I want it to look THEN Ill lay out the grid and see what I have to fix. Same with anatomy, I studied anatomy the boring ass, necessary way first, then I reverted to drawing shit the way I used to but with the knowledge that at any point I could break it down and apply anatomy fundamentals to it. Thats a great way to develop your own personal style without sacrificing the fun out of it. Ive also mentioned tracing as an effective learning tool when needed. Look back at my other replies and you'll find that bit of advice. Lots of ways to go about it depending on your interests, talent and dedication All the fundamentals you mentioned are important, we can take this privately and I can tell you, depending on your work, what you should first focus on (hint, it'll be your weakest!)Thank you! I highly recommend Clip Studio, then! Frenden (look him up)makes some GREAT tools for that prgram that are very, very good and should help you make the transition to digital

10th BatchThanks! Im pretty excited, its a pretty big opportunity. Its not without risk and I LOVED my previous job but sometimes you gotta go for it, you know?Hard to say, for so many of us devs theres a ton of cancelled work I cant really show you or however proud I am of the work we did it sometimes doesnt reflect in a really cool image or video Its hard to top that I was one of the Inside Cover Artists for Street Fighter IV, though Project wise, while at Kiwi is where I learned I actually wanted to be an Art Director and that I could actually be good at managing people? The Heroes: Islands of Adventure project started as just me with two interns with a team of Indian engineers working remotely and we turned it into something that if it had been made under a real company actually had a shot at being something special. Seeing the growth of my team during that project, the many people we proved wrong and the challenges we were able to overcome definitely makes me proud, you can see it if you scroll all the way down to pageAlready answered earlier with a Chrono Trigger piece but I still like this other Megaman piece from a few years backVery little, being a fulltime artist in games has paid for all of my needs. I could hustle a lot more and make a lot more but Id rather use my free time on art I want to make and my hobbies, gotta strike a balance somehow. Thats one of the reasons I stopped pursuing comics, in that field you have to basically work for free for 5 years until you can get some recognition and honestly fuck all that Gross income? Well its hard to say accumulated, various 401k's and whatnot. The new job is in Euros and Im not sure about taxes yet, but after yearly bonuses and whatnot its well over six figures. It makes total sense. Im not a child, I know how the world works and how this business operates. If I wanted to be rich I wouldnt be in this business, haha If I had a giant problem with it then Id go off on my own and try and make my own IP happen.Seems like a great console for the people that want to keep playing more Halo, more Forza and more GearsThanks bud! Not like EVO was gonna happen this year anyway, seeing how things are going ... I will be stateside a few times a year, thougha) honestly it depends on your talent and work ethic. Some Gnomon courses are great, some arent and I dont know what you respond best to. Maybe your flow needs work, maybe its the speed, maybe its the anatomy or maybe its the application. DM me and I can give you more detailed feedback b) its not necessary, if your models are dope then nobody will give a shit. If you want to be good though, I dont see how having strong doundamentals would hurt you, although Ive seen plenty of amazing modelers that cant draw for shit.Im experienced enough that even if Ive never drawn something before I can do a pretty good job by looking at the right reference and breaking it down into basic shapes. We all have areas we are weak at, mechanical design being mine, and its important to find ways to work at them. You dont have to be a jack of all trades, btw! Instead just become good at being resourceful and make sure you practice different kinds of styles, linewidths, rendering techniques etc so when a client throws you a curveball youll have a more extensive library. As to how actually BUILD that library, well, varied sources help! Artstation, Pixiv, art books, look at different shows, games, etc and try to see who the concept artists are. Those experiences are what will make you a unique artist, for instance, my art improved a lot more by learning how to box than by drawing more, Im the kind of artist that observes and absorbs his environment more than the guy who needs to thumbnail something 50 times, so at 38 I basically know how I learn the quickest, you know? Also, people wont tell you this but as far as PRACTICE is concerned and learning how to draw something in particular ... just TRACE IT. Put your ref in Photoshop, lower the opacity and, on a new layer, break it down to basic shapes, realizing how theyre layered in 3D space, paying close attention to the negative spaces, then try drawing it on your own! Its a great way to learnDepends on the studio, you probably wont be hired as a Lead right out of indie gaming though, maybe a senior at most, as a Lead they would want to see some sort of leadership and management experience. Ive worked with AD's that want the Lead to be the one who sets the look and feel of the game, some companies also separate the position between being a Principal Artist and a Lead Artist. Its the same level of seniority but one is targeted toward making art and the other one towards art direction. Hopefully you land on a team that can see what youre best at and leave room for that, even in a more directorial role. For instance, in Star Wars I was the Lead and, really, the Art Director by all intents and purposes so MOST of my time was spent managing the art output and quality ... however, there were plenty of times were I was still making art because I was the best person for the job Your best best, however, is probably to aim at getting hired as a Senior and, after seeing how their management structure is and what their policies are, youll decide wether you want to pursue a more managerial role or do something different. Do research Principal Artist though, its a very cool role.New IP always, unless its something really fucking cool like Star Wars or Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Dark Souls, etc ... otherwise I like making new stuff, its more invigoratingHaving lived in Utah, New York and California ... Im pretty sure you can guess which was which. Sometimes it can be hard to keep politics out of the conversation but hey, its a job and backing the other party aint against the law. That being said, boy am I glad to be leavingIn SWGOH I think its pretty safe to admit that character has been considered at one point or another. As you can tell, Im sure, we tend to focus more on bringing new factions than single one-off cool characters. At the end of the day, it just makes more sense. Release strategy changes a lot and has to do with a bunch of moving parts, most of which I cant talk about. Nihilus was before my time but Sith sure were strong for a long time, the ultimate goal is to reward the players for a vast collection and not just "use this to top the arena shard". Plus, remember that there really isnt a best practices sheet for a game like ours with that longevity, its still pretty damn unusual so CG will continue to take educated chances and experiment with who and what they release in the futureThank you! Its appreciatedMadrid, siempre Churros, por favor, y con chocolate Tifa y escoge los miembros para tu fiestaComplete and utter insanity. I feel horrible for the team that was forced to crunch like crazy and give up their careers due to burnout. Not worth it. Also, that wont be replicated for a while, horrible standard to set, too. I dont want other teams to think thats the level they need to reach.

6th BatchSure thing! Look me up on twitter, get one if you dont have one yet! Its usefulI use Photoshop. Maya and Unity as my big 3. For fun I also now use Clip Studio Paint because I think its a better program for drawing, many people use Procreate now as well but Im pretty meh on it For animation, a lot of people make do with Photoshop, actually! Kinuko, of Skullgirls fame, actually animates in Photoshop. I know pixel artists use Aseprite but UI dunno if then animate with it as well. The Premium edition of Clip Studio also has animation tools but I havent used them. There is always Toonboom as the "professional" option, but I havent used it in 20 years so I wouldnt be able to give you a solid recTo newcomers I always say to lower your goddamn expectations. Youre not gonna work on GTA right out of school and your Kickstarter that is Mario but with Zelda and with Megaman boss fights and weapon swapping will NEVER GET FUCKING MADE. We do a pretty poor fucking job of letting fans or talent what to expect when they enter the industry because saying "youre the next Miyamoto" is a really fucking good sales package. Start making SMALL games, try to learn what games making actually IS and stop saying you want to be the idea person, that just means you dont actually want to do the work. You run into a lot of inflated egos in this business so we always react negatively to the people that think they know how to make a game because they play them a lot Also, copy/paste doesnt work in videogames, it just doesnt. 90% of game design is not the ideas, anybody can do that, its the pacing, the ins and outs of how systems work, the balancing of what youre doing moment to moment and how the player experiences it. Its a very unique, very complex, very hard medium and the way newcomers and fans see it is extremely reductivePretty well and I dont mind being honest about this stuff. Being a fulltime artist in videogames pays well and its steady income, ESPECIALLY if youre a VFX artist, Tech Artist or Rigger/Animator. Those positions are highly sought after and well rewarded. You gotta move your way up though, my first job as a texture artist (in Utah) paid 31k which, at the time, felt like more money that I knew what to do with. Later we got bought out by EA and my salary got adjusted and raised to an eventual 45k which was fairly nice so my wife and I bought a condo since she was also at EA making a similar salary. I was fired a while later and suddenly making mortgage with her salary was challenging. Soon we both got jobs in NYC at the same games company, each making around 70k combined income which was OK since our rent was 2k a month and NYC is expensive. It wasnt bad but NY being limited in game studios made it a bit risky. When I moved to CA it was still around the 75k space which, again, good enough to rent a place, buy videogames, hang out and not have to stress over living wages but not "big money" for the Bay Are by any means. A few promotions later and I finally broke the 100k barrier, making it up to 110k which ... was great and is great but my wife quit the business at that point so our double income disappeared and suddenly we were not nearly as liquid. Once we moved to Sacramento making around 95k we settled in nicely and now, moving to Spain with a very similar salary in Euros will be pretty huge for us, its going to be very good for us there, provided the job itself goes well. When you freelance you can struggle more though. In San Bruno I freelanced for a year, 1400 rent a month on a basement and having to pay for insurance ourselves, 600 dollars a MONTH for Obamacare was ridiculous and the coverage sucked. That was a hard year, for sure. The starving artist stuff is more at play for people who do the con circuit or dont have a fulltime games job. Those folks do struggle while theyre trying to build a name for themselves and you should support them as much as possible. I'll be fine.Already answered. It sucks. We get over it though, on to the next thing and all.Well the "no loading" stuff sounds exciting but ... its bullshit, right? Like, dont we say that every generation? Devs will just take the extra room and jam it full of shit or not optimize their games so the system will quickly have to resort to giant loading times again. I think the audio improvements are HUGE, however! Tech wise though, I feel like tech is not stopping us very much anymore when it comes to being able to crate compelling and unique gameplay. Once VR becomes fully wireless and the specs become higher, thats the really exciting prospect for me Basically, tech is nice but if games are mostly going to continue to be Halo but 5% better instead of actually new, fun, never before seen stuff. I think games back in the Amiga to N64 era were a lot more ino taking chances and creating new genreslol yep, no worries I know how it goesHola hola, gracias! Ive dabbled in pixelart for fun, however it is very much not my thing as a production artist. I think you gotta learn to delineate what you like vs what youre good at, then using the two as a means to grow and find new styles and approaches. I like games that look good regardless of style, plenty of pixel games out there that I think are visually very meh, like Rogue Legacy (fun game though) and plenty of beautiful games people like whose artstyle I just dont care for like Dont Starve or even Cuphead where the art actively gets in the way of gameplay Also, good catch! Fixed it, paging for visibility

7th Batch. Thats it for page one! Phew!Next Street Fighter, next Final Fantasy, next FROM anything, next Nintendo new IP or Zelda game In theory I do always prefer new IP, however, getting the chance to contribute to legendary franchises is incredibly appealing or when Square finally remakes Chrono Trigger :PGotta get my Japanese skills up first! During my first time at EA I was the character concept artist on Nerf N-Strike for the Wii and I did about a million takes on the characters there, I dont think anybody was ever happy with anything. Problem with original IP is that people want PERFECTION even if the first concept is already perfect so its a losing proposition for the artist. It was a very sobering AND humiliating project for me, having some other artist do the designs and then me having to redraw them later was truly fucking awful. On my second sting at EA with Star Wars some characters do get a bajillion number of revisions, I think my Bastila Shan concept took a good 6 tries before we were done with itI think its a useful tool for the people who want it or need it. If you want to make a game and it can help you because you dont have other means, then awesome! Does it risk games looking more "average" sure it does, but those games were never going to look visually unique anyways. If you invest in a talented art team, they know how to grab work like that, edit it and remake it to fix your needs more quickly so that they can work on more unique content. As games get more and more complex in AAA you need agile solutions like that so you can stop wasting your time on a trillionth rock texture and start thinking about cooler shit.No prob, fun way to spend a Monday :) For companies like EA, we have internal teams that handle that stuff ... you also have companies that take on clients like 8-4 but theyre probably too busy to take on new clients. If I were you and had limited time and money (presumably) Id headhunt the people who make fan translations through the romhacks site and get in touch with them directlyThere a big difference before your game gets greenlit and another big difference once your game is out and transition to a "live" service which is what I got most experience on If youre working on AAA console as a concept artist, depending if you have skills that translate to art production you might get moved to another project ... or maybe like at Insomniac your contract runs out because they dont hire concept artists, they only do so for the beginning of the project. The production team, though, will be heavily involved until the game releases because games have SO. MANY. BUGS. up until release that everyone is just full steam ahead trying to help as much as possible, even after release working on patched and upcoming content For a Live game like SWGOH though, we still have the full team on the game even 5 years after. We launch content every few weeks and its a full time job for everyone involved because were constantly working on keeping the machine running (characters, packs, etc) AND new content like new game modes, big feature drops, etcSplatoon definitely made an impression! A shooter that isnt a shooter that is more than just "shoot people in the head to win" I have seen people who would NEVER play that kind of game get really immersed into it by just focusing on painting the level without really engaging .. its genius! It's exactly the type of gameplay experience I would have never thought of. Im constantly impressed at how Nintendo can enter a genre and find ways to make themselves completely distinct. Its like how every single fireball in Smashbros is different, thats crazy Very recently I was very surprised that the goddamn squats minigame in FF VIIR was so well done! Like, what?

8th Batch!lol I like it better than Basecamp ill tell you that much. Its fucking buggy though, thats fir sureI learned how to draw Comic Books and how to animate in 2D at the Kubert School, then I learned 3D modeling, animation and texturing at Fullsail. The combination of the two landed me my first job as a 3D generalist. I wanted to be a concept artist at Blizzard (never happened) but knew that the easiest way in was to pursue the jobs that were nost available, hence becoming a 3D environment guy first Fullsail tackled a bit of everything so you could feel each side of the industry. Back then it was an accelerated course of a year and a half though, it has since evolved to a much more expensive 4 years bachelor which ... uh, no thanksHard to say, Ive been drawing since I was 4 ish and am 38 now. Started art school at 18 and got my first job at 25. Depends on your level of talent, dedication and wether youre practicing the right things or not ... but if you do the work, youll get inBlame Gears of War or The Lord of the Rings movies. What a goddamn shitshow. There is always going to be some sort of graphical trend in games and that was the worst. I remember being pretty angry at it back in the day as well.nextFor me Id have to be a LOT more freelance minded. I have worked with animation studios here and there, Starburns being a recent example (character designs on some pilots they were going to pitch) but I would also have to revamp my portfolio. Id have to make a lot more storyboards and my character designs would have to be a lot more thorough. Once I did that I would have to do a lot of submissions, get in touch with contacts in the industry and see what the right position would even be since Im too old for a starting job but too inexperienced to be put in charge. If youre a concept artist in your late twenties its a lot easier to move back and forth, Ive seen it happen. Its when you start being a leader that your options actually get more narrow. While at Kiwi, a small company that made social games on mobile, its when I felt the most limited. We didnt have an engine and all of our engineers worked remotely from India and had zero game experience. That means that we literally had to email them our art, wait a day and see how badly they implemented it in game. Imagine that! This permeated the entire process btw, including game design. Imagine having to explain to a coder, in India, who doesnt play games, how the poison status effect should work ... he had never done anything like that and eventhough they meant well and worked hard, every single creative decision was wrong not just the first time, but the first 10 times My favorite result is what we accomplished with Steambirds Alliance from the the first batch of questions. We pulled some creativity straight out of our asses in order to solve some truly, truly difficult problems and, once I left and a different art team took over, they continued the groundwork I laid out and shipped a game that still very much feels like the one I directed. It makes me very happy and proud of it allhalf full, for sure. These are just videogames, im sure well figure something out If we dont, thats ok too, just try and give a shit, it goes a long waySounds like it, theyre saying all the right thingsWe all need an outlet. Do I have a NSFW side account? ... yesPretty closely, for Star Wars I would storyboard and compose the cinematics myself so I would collaborate with our audio artist with the technical difficulties (and there are many) as well as having alignment on the audio cues "I meant for this to have silence, here I left more room for you to put something intense" and she would ask things like "we need to make this scene last 2 seconds longer so I can get this part in" Nothing in games ever truly feels alive until audio gets in there and we owe them so, so much. I didnt truly, truuuly feel like I was working on Star Wars until my first cienamtic had audio on it, it was like a tidal wave of happiness.Thank you! , if youre into that :)Oh yeah, theres many but it entirely depends on your skill, motivation, desire and .... location A degree in business would definitely be very useful if you want to enter games as a producer and handle in-game economy. There re PLENTY of jobs there. QA is definitely a way in and a good way to eventually get promoted to bigger stuff, thats because QA's tend to have a pretty good understanding of how the games are built so they become more reliable ... but then again, QA burns the most people out of the industry as well. I myself never wanted to enter the industry that way as I saw it as a distraction from what I needed to focus on which was my portfolio I dont think game companies actually give a shit about college degrees though. Theyll put that in the opening just to weed out candidates who are not very confident. You should always apply for what you want and dont give a shit about the wall of text in the opening itself. Many companies have all kinds of openings at any point, just really find what it is that you want to do, get good at it and start your search. Do be flexible about travel though, its a big helpEA certainly feels like they deserve it and Lucas certainly seemed very happy with the arrangement last I checked. The numbers are a great, great ally when you want to get real data on this and not vocal minorities online. It also doesnt help that EA is actually honest about SW games getting cancelled. Games get cancelled all the time at every single company youve ever heard of, EA just happens to be honest about it.I LOVED working at EA, theyre an amazing company full of really high quality individuals. Id work there again in a heartbeat and they have some really cool projects EA will also EA all over themselves every now and then, thats for sure ... but I can vouch for the teams Ive worked with, the great leadership shown when this whole pandemic broke out and the level of care and ambitions my teams possessed. Ive been pretty good at outlining how dumb we can be on occasion, but its a giant company with a lot of big IP's and just because people are nice and they try their best it doesn't mean the job is any easier or riskier

Thread I've been an artist in videogames for 14+ years. I'm between jobs and have a week off. Ask Me (mostly) Anything
4th BatchNah, some stuff for SWGOH leaked in the past and its annoying, for sure, but steps were taken to fix it and that was that. The team is bummed when it happens, of course, especially because the art team is often thinking of "this is how the player will first experience this" and we put a lot of effort coming up with that strategy so its obviously fucking annoying when thats ruinedIts fine! We managed to hit our (crazy) deadlines with no issue. For artists in particular, WFH is a bit dangerous because we work MORE. Its pretty easy to be "always on" because your workstation is always there, tempting you. For the leadership team it was also hard due to how much management you have to deal with, upping the level of communication, changing meeting schedules, etc, etc. For some talent its a lot easier to work for home but for the QA team its actually a fair bit more difficult. However, there has been a silver lining and a lot of the "myths" regarding WFH have been disippated which is a good thing and will enable some talent to be in a much better spot once this is all over. It affected my new job a fair deal because I could no longer fly to Spain to interview! Im a people person (lol) and was worried interviewing online would be detrimental to me, but it all worked out. The gut wrenching part was to not be able to tell my team in person that I was leaving, that entire process sucked ass and while it had to be done, its definitely not the way I wanted to leave. Thankfully the team was super supportive of my decision so there was no drama but still, after two and a half years of working very closely with people I consider close friends, telling them youre leaving via ZOOM is not what I thought would happen.Specifically for art, check these out Dream Worlds Framed Ink The Visual Story (Bruce Block) The Making of Prince of Persia Figure Drawing: Design and Invention Art books: Monster Hunter Illustrations The Skillful Huntsman Tekkon Kinkreet background art books I dont know of a lot of resources for strictly game making since I entered the industry so long ago that its mostly learning on the job. I think a lot of the Iwata Asks are incredibly insightful, howeverNintendo! Their ability and confidence in shifting art styles for their products as needed really speaks to their mastery and understanding of the craft. Its amazing that Zelda can go through so many visual styles whenever the agem calls for them .. and what they did with Splatoon was incredible. Obviously I admire what studios like Naughty Dog, Squenix and CD Projekt can do on a technical level, but its the pones that are more willing to be playful and take risks that I always gravitate to. I love how FROM approaches their art as well, if you look at any of their assets closely, theyre not very impressive ... its when you look at them all assembled together, with the right ambience and camera work that their work truly shines above the competitionWe had access to some stuff, reference, jpgs and whatnot but no original art. It must be in a vault somewhere, Im sure. I think we did reuse some of the audio but when it comes to dealing with really, really old assets like those, the models and textures would be largely unusableI know what he meant, its fineDepends! What you think of as "cool concept art" is probably something you saw as a nice illustration on an art book or something in an ad. Thats ... not concept art. Those are marketing illustrations. We typically never use shit like that when concepting something. Those are made later on to sell the art book or the game What concept art typically looks like ... well, its really rough, its basically the middle step in "please give me something as quickly as humanly possible so I can get this shit done" so very often theres no color nor finished lineart, just a scribble. Depending on WHO we have to show it to, however, well go more in detail. Like, if we need a 3rd party to approve a concept art,. well go more finished to make sure we dont have to deal with feedback like "will the background be in black and white, then?" When it comes to that, the amount of time depends on the artist! At EA for SWGOH we have a really amazing one that only needs about 3 days per piece, but his level of quality would take me a bout a week. Most illustrations in my portfolio are about 60 hours of work, more lessWell, on that subject .. seeing the amount of conspiracy theories circling around the SWGOH community has made me realize that most conspiracy theories are bullshit because if even our game suffers from people making shit up out of the blue and running with assumptions in order to validate MORE assumptions ... then really, all of the other stuff must be BS as wellIts a very different problem that requires a different team composition. I do NOT like most remasters. I think they miss out on tons of decision making moments that the original team meant, plus, the OG team that made FFX is a better group of artists than the ones charged with remastering FF X ... so youre always asking lesser artists to reinterpret somebody elses work, often resulting in misaligned expectations ... shit like "oh this is blurry, ill make it sharp!" OK yeah but maybe that was blurry for a purpose and you "fixing it" will make it actually look worse? Id much rather have a full rmekae like RE2 or FF VIIR that tries to recreate the FEELING the original developers had at the original dev time, such as trying to become a visual tour de force like the previous games were and not just the same game but sharper, like the Shadow of the Colossus remake. For the textures, it depends! Do they have the original textures available AND were they made at a natively high enough resolution? If they were, thats great! Otherwise youd have to remake them from scratch with .. probably, way less skilled artists. Thats a challenge. Alsom those textures even if higher res were probably MADE to be seen at a lower res alongside a low poly character soo the texture might/will look like ass on a low poly character so then you have to redo the mesh as well, meaning you might have to reanimate as well ... ugh, fucking nightmare stuff, just start over. This kind of workflow would permeate the entire development process, even audio, localization, game design, loading times, etc, etc. You need a team of puzzle solvers more than actual game developers Thats even before we get to the goddamn code. Working on somebody else codebase for a remaster, code that could even being a foreign language, no less ... must be a significant fucking nightmare. I think the MGS remasters were probably the best examples out there along Odin Sphere, for the rest ... I just dont like them in idea and executionYeah, artists can freelance as long as its not for a direct competitor. Its kind of frowned upon regardless so keep it to yourself, really. If its outside of games though, yeah, do your thing. As far as free requests, that happens mostly with younger folks who are trying to get themselves out there and thus are active in communities with many other, younger people who have no money. It also happens a lot more with women artists. Im pretty experienced, dont freeelance all that much and thus mostly deal with legit clients. I think if I had a bigger following, like lets say 50k follows on twitter, that the math alone would dictate I start being exposed to more freeloaders, though. Most time I hear hoprro stories from people, my honest reaction is "that never happens to me, wtf, how come it never does?"

9th Batch. Keeping busy!Hard to not sound like a cynic here ... everything is hard, friend. Actually, scratch that, making the art is really the easy part, implementing it and making all the different parts work together is goddamn dystopian nightmareDepends on your dev style. Some places leave that part, which is the budget, up to the last point. Kind of like "ok we got everything in, looks awesome, game runs like shit sooo lets optimize and try to achieve these target goals before this deadline" That way you get to the awesome stuff and then compromise. Another way is to set a tight budget from the beginning and, depending on what type of game youre making, is definitely the way to go. Lets say youre making a gacha game with 200 playable characters, then you NEED to set clear limits on the maximum number of polys, texture size, number of bones for animation and draw calls, otherwise youll never ship anything. A strong tech team is key and a great partner to have when it comes to this, make friends with your tech team, people! My current dream game that isnt a redo of anything is to create an outdoor soccer game that really feels like it did when you were a kid playing soccer outdoors, none of that fifa street shit. Uneven terrains, uncertain rules, pick your own teams, maybe one of them has to leave early for dinner, you scout different neighborhoods, maybe an adult joins in ... The art style would be inspired by Tekkon Kinkreet, the cast would be extremely diverse, the gameplay modes would be man. SKATE but soccer is the closest facsimile and even then, not quite closeYeah sure, even when dealing with a license you gotta realize you got the job for a reason, to be creative, not just to trace someone elses work. Plus, when you redo some really old stuff, like I recently had to with KOTOR, I had to reconcept his boots from scratch because his original design didnt have anything to work with there ... or like Bastila Shan, her original outfit had textures so compressed you couldn't see the pattern so I had to make a new one that we could work with and stayed true to the original When you get to in-game assets though, its usually going to lose some spark because the element of roughness is gone at that point. Thats why some artists see more success with their sketches than with the polished pieces because when its done all the discovery is gone and maybe the final thing isnt what you were imagining early on. Plus, the more people that get involved in the asset creation pipeline, the more it might get averaged out and lose its uniqueness. Its fairly common!I mean, there can be a million reasons. One I can give you is because it might not fit into the overall strategy or because a particular character if done a certain way may clash with another future character in the pipeline as well. This is a very different answer depending on the specifics, sometimes its just because one higher up didnt like a concept and that was it. Oh, oftentimes cool shit doesnt make it in because "in order to do it justice, wed need to do all this other shit" so that usually amounts for a lot of cut content ... and it makes sense, Ive certainly made that argument before, because if you want to do this cool idea then we should do it rightIve never heard that reason and it sounds like bullshit lol It was just a sign of the times, I thought it was fine for Gears ... not so much for Smash Bros, lol Just a dumb art trend because people thought its what people wanted.Once I was told a character design "wasnt Black enough" Ill leave it at that Oh wait, you wouldnt fucking believe how many penises people see in things. NO, NIC, EMBO'S HAT DOESNT LOOK LIKE A PENIS, ITS HIS GODDAMN HATFor a long time it was this Chrono Trigger piece, now all I can see are the flaws though!Yeah its a good living, for the most part. Definitely underpaid thoughMe? For the duration, especially at this time in my career. Games are not really "once youre done youre done" affairs anymore, but some teams, like audio are not there from the beginning, same with VFX. The intial team before a team gets greenlit tends to be pretty small, once its Go time though, you make the budgets and start hiring for all positionsUgh, I worked on a Hollywood shootemup type of game, some Pokemon ripoff they had and Ice Age 3. Never worked for Pop Cap, noyeah thats a long one, lol, maybe some other time I can go in depth. Depending on the size of the company it can really change, as well! Some people are hard to please, some good concepts are just bad fits too, like, yeah cool drawing but can the modeler pull that off? Is the texture artist going to fit that much detail? Is the animator going to be able to bring this cool idea to life? A good concept artists understands his team and makes concepts that they can truly shine with, otherwise it can be pretty detrimental. It also depends on the Art Direction, can he make sure the artists deliver on the vision? Can he make sure the higher ups are on board and not force dumb changes that will ruin the character? Theres a bit of a dance you need to make in order to make sure everyone is on board with stuff, you cant just make cool shit and throw it into the void ... thats not how a successful pipeline worksSure do and look up Figure Drawing: Design and Invention Mistakes? Lots like not wanting to learn how to draw backgrounds, not learning different styles, etc. In terms of making games, theyre too damn abitious, just make something small and learn.Awesome! Im pretty excited for the next batch of content, specifically the next client update.Rigging by about a million milesHe would have been if those hacks had finished the damn game and not release that rushed, incoherent messIm a plain cheese kind of guy, then I go at it with the red pepper flakes Sometimes, though ... I go with anchovies! Only in Spain though, anchovies in the US are an affront to God I dont like pineapple on pizza, its too heavy and watery for me. Cool if youre into it, though

5th BatchDefinitely more difficult. It would be great to get a fucking break so the rest of us plebs cant catch up a little bit. A lot of games you play are not even running the latest version of the engine theyre on, because updating it to get that sweet new lighting engine would BREAK THE SHIT out of your game and its too risky, so you have to wait, and wait, and deal with shit tools forever. Phone upgrades are a definite annoyance, basically the resolution of the screen is too high so we need to supply texture sizes to match it ... but then the phones hardware or engine cant keep up with it. Thats why so many phone games still look and feel like PS2 games technically because since they have to look good on a super hires iPhone screen, we have a limited texture budget. Its much easier to make things look good when you know a CRT TV has a limited resolution Tech upgrades also are uneven in some areas, all of a sudden faces and textures look amazing but the animation tech hasnt evolved to keep up with it so you get that marionette effect when bodies look realistic but they dont MOVE realistically, so it looks fucking weirdNickname I got in college when I really wasnt the best at handling my anger issues.I have! I worked very closely with the audio team in Star Wars, for instance! Amazing group of people :) The best way? Depends where you live! I think you should find indie games youd like to be involved with either locally near you or online and get in touch, ask if tyhey have an audio person and if they be interested in getting some help. I think being proactive in general helps though, do you play DnD? Roll20? Maybe provide audio for your groups DnD experience? Its a small industry so its not beyond you getting in touch with someone you admire via twitter, asking questions and sending samples. Be polite obviously but people generally like interacting with newer talent, especially audio since it can be a very freelance heavy job. That is ... kind of my job, haha. As a concept artist, you would be a bad one if you create concepts that cannot be turned into actual game art. When providing a visual target its very important to break it down with a "this is how well get there" guide. For a long cancelled game, for mobile, this was the visual target I proposed I broke it down to these tiles and this was how it looked in-game,. pretty close! It happens often, no worries. This even happens IN studios pretty often, were teams legit do not understand how other teams operate. This is why you always hear that studios often wish they had better communication, we all tend to be insular and worry about our own shit, regardless of disciplineI kind of answered it in a previous batch but for sure how many things about development are taken for granted and just how small the vocal minority is. We all try to be professional and not yell at consumer when they say super obvious shit so instead theyll be quiet only to then hear fans "were not communicating" its like sigh, ok, you do you, thanks for being passionate. ERA is not too bad though, I think for the most part most posters here mean well.I had talent, for sure. Been drawing since I was 3,4 whatever and now Im 38 and continue to draw almost everyday. Talent matters but so does hard work, tons of talented people reach their peak early on and dont get any better. You gotta learn to enjoy the process or youre not going to make it very far (exceptions aside, of course!) I didnt take real classes until I went to college at The Kubert School I prefer to draw on paper and to color digitally. If I was around a decade earlier and had to become good at painting with traditional media I probably would have never made it in games, instead becoming a comic or manga artist A Cintiq these days, I do use CSP on the iPad a fair bit these days but for serious work, its on the desktop with the Cintiq in PhotoshopUV is a goddamn hellish shitscape. Be afraid of it, sure but DO learn it. In college we learned that if youre UVing a single piece for over 15 minutes, youre doing it wrong. It was 20 years ago, but theres wisdom there Do beware of auto UV wrappers though, they can make it hard for other people to use your UVs or fix your textures and can teach you some pretty bad habits. For instance, most people at Blizzard are MASTERS at using UVs and truly getting the most out of a texture. If you become one of those UV savants nyoull have a big advatnage over other candidates.

3rd Batch, will be afk for a couple of hours after this because I have to go return my equipment at the studio in less than an hourNo beef. I'm not in high level meetings so I cant tell you specifics but I imagine its hard for EA to sell well in Nintendo sytems when the highest sellers are all Nintendo 1st party gamesIt can change SEVERELY depending on the studio. I see myself more as a game maker than just an artist these days and my number one priority is to always make sure the teams have synergy, especially with the design team, then with engineering. If an artist knows how his/her work is used in game and they have a deep understanding of how the game works, theyll be able to make much better decisions with their work. This is not something that comes naturally to people and, in some cases, can open up a can of worms, such as the artist taking too many liberties or the designer thinking theyre the goddamn art director all of a sudden so clear lanes of communication need to be established. For instance, its not ok for a designer to go directly to the character modeler and ask for things to be changed, they should go through the art lead or director first. I benefited a lot in Star Wars, for instance, when I asked to be included very early in the design sessions for new characters, often being able to say things like "this kit is too boring, she just shoots three times? we need something more unique" or things like "we cant have an ability like that in game, our engine doesnt support it, what about this instead" Sometimes it can be hard if a person that is used to think very high level gets involved with the production crew. This can happen with new hires a lot! The are used to saying things like "I want this to feel this way" which is fine and good but then when they see how we actually get there their feedback will be not usable because they dont know how the engine works or how our pipeline works. Managing that relationship is important because you can then leverage that knowledge (or lack thereof) to ask for things like "well if we had better tools we COULD have the ship go in and out of Hyperspace at will" shit like thatFF VII R is probably the clubhouse leader but that has a lot of recency bias. I love the blend of old vs new and how theyre giving old fans so many new avenues to explore Midgar. Its not perfect, though, as I think the original was actually a bit more colorful and playful in some spaces. Ori and the Blind Forest is an obvious delight as was (as previously stated) Bloodborne, MHW and BOTW. Zelda in particular deserves a lot of credit though, because it doesnt matter that its hardware is not impressive, its just beatiful. The games I took the most screenshots of, though, thats a good barometer: Octopath BOTW NieR Bloodborne Gravity Rush 2 FF VIIRFinal Fantasy VI then! Street Fighter IV Chrono Cross (duh) which I dont even like, haha Vagrant Story FF XII FF VIII Splatoon Monster Hunter Tri Rival Schools Persona 4/5 Gravity Rush 2 BOTW Theres a lot! I like the blend of fantasy and real world aesthetics. Games that I love like MGS I wouldn't be a good fit form but stuff like Street Fighter. Final Fantasy or Monster Hunter are my big loves. I also love urban dirty settings like Tekkon Kinkreet, thats really my lane as wellCofee with Vanilla Syrup and lot of milk because Im a pansy. I usually do fasting till noon though but this whole quarantine has changed my routineEA certainly hasnt, our leadership team is comprised mostly of women, which is amazing and theyre amazing. I have seen attitudes shift to more healthy ways of thinking over the years, I have for sure heard some bad, dumb shit out the mouths of a few coworkers in the past. Its hard to pinpoint it as a mentality when in my experience its been a "this dumbass said WHAT?" more than a studio wide mentality. Reading what happened at Riot and other places certainly opened my eyes as well as many others and I have been more vigilant since, making sure I do my part because Im sure theres a lot of blind spots I still have. I have a very strong personality irl and I'll call out people on their bullshit so I think that keeps a lot of drama away from me because people are not so brave with their bullshit opinions when Im around, haha

First batchDefinitely, 100% for Spryfox. Theyre awesome and its a game that I think ios very, very good (MMO, Bullet Hell, Roguelike, F2P) I was brought in for a 6 month contract and tasked to revamp the entire look of the game to make it more marketable in order for them to find a publisher. I was the AD but only had an art intern to work with and a partime VFX artist. Coming up with an artstyle we could deliver on with a super small timeframe while working from home and managing other freelance work at the time was super, super stressful. We managed to come up with a really cool solution (seen below) which made it very scalable because we had a textureless art style, making Unity do most of the work with lighting, vertex shading, realtime Ambient Occulusion and liberal use of colored fog but I definitely put my share of blood, sweat and tears on this one. Below is an example of how the game looked when I joined and how it looked when I handed it off before my departure.Depends on your team size (indie, mobile or AAA) and responsibility. If youre on smaller teams youre asked to be more of a semi specialist that can also be a jack of all trades vs working in AAA you can be one of 6 character artists that specializes in modeling faces, maybe ... but if youre in an indie project you probably have to do 40% of the art needs a game has, depending on your role. Each company is also very different culturally. When I was at Kiwi or SGN, sometimes I worked on several games at once and most of them are in different development stages so it could literally be that game A needs a visual target in order to get greenlit so thats gonna take 2 days at least but game B needs a new asset update so I gotta make some new ground tiles to go with the 4th of July theme whereas game C has some assets dropped from outsourcing so I need to make some time before lunch to check them out and provide feedback because theyre in BUENOS AIRES and theyre in a different schedule. For EA it was different, there I was the Lead Artist and was basically in charge of the entire art team so I could go and tell our VFX guy "hey, I want to show this to Lucas today so please have the VFX for "x" ready by noon, then start working on "y" right after. Meanwhile our environment artist would be waiting on an asset drop from our outsourcer before getting started on the next env but in the meantime he was fine tuning the env thats closest to release or doing some minor tasks while waiting so he would have time to attend strategy meetings about the next content drop. So as you can see its hard to nail the "average" I have found that mostly a production artist has a few standup meetings in the mornings every week, a couple of art reviews and the rest is heavily based on production time. It's not quite a 9-5 job because overtime is a thing but 9:30 to 6:30 is something Ive seen a lotStar Wars! Being able to contribute significantly to that IP like revamping KOTOR concepts, getting storyboards approved by Lucas or the many other cool shit we get to do has been the chance of a lifetime. Outside of that, Skullgirls. Ive always been hoping to work on a fighting game and they gave me that opportunity, as part of the animation team, no less! Small role, huge thrill.Absolutely, often the Photoshop files we work in oscillate 800 MB or even some GB every now and then. Its a huge bonus to be in a studio that can splurge on top tier hardware like a big Cintiq as well. However, for some big companies, theres also a lot of limitations like the heavy antivirus you need to have at all times so your super awesome computer will have a lot of IT mandated stuff on it, making it slower than it needs to beDude, during this quarantine? AWESOME

We are definitely paid less. If you want to make money as an artist, be in graphic design! At Gameloft in NY we had an amnazing UI artist who came from a design house and he said in order to join games he knew he had to give up 20k a year. It can be frustrating knowing how much to contribute to a game only to find out the producers who set your schedule make way more money than you do Otherwise, its not like we are treated badly ... at least not in my experiences and in the roles Ive had as a leader its always been my custom to elevate the presence of the art team, very often they can feel more like freelancers than actual developers. Its key to get them more involved in the games process, you often hear jokes from game designers or other people that clearly disrespect our knowledge of games since "oh theyre just artistes" when like, motherfucker, I play more games than you and have been in the industry for decades, I know how to make a game LOL That being said, designers and engineers and such are often wonderful to work with and can be pretty amazed when they see our output. It goes both ways.I see a LOT of projects go sideways due to lack of confidence in the project and starting over way too many times. What you think is a year of development is often 3 months worth because they started over 3 times. Im a big believer in execution and think too many projects die get rebooted too soon when they just should have committed to what they had instead of jumping to conclusions too early and continuously trying to be perfect since the beginning. That CAN backfire though, just look at Anthem! They definitely went full out way too early. I see a lot of copying and pasting too. "Well pick this from game x, this from game y and this from game z" That shit barely EVER works because youre teaching your game designers to copy, so they dont create anymore and if they dont practice their craft, they wont be able to tackle any kind of creative solving later on.This gen Bloodborne definitely comes to mind, what a perfect blend of art and design! Monster Hunter World is also up there, basically perfect ... oh man, BOTW too. All time it would be hard to argue against 3rd Strike. Perfection in execution by a team at the peak of their powers.Nope, I love it. Im a game maker through and through. While I do have aspirations of getting a comic book/manga/graphic novel done its games that has allowed me to grown and flourish BE a gamemaker, get in Unity, make things, try new things. A lot of people TALK a lot in thius business and dont realize just how mind numbingly hard it is. Make a small game, not your dream game, and realize how much you had no idea about. Its a great business to be in, but most people just dont understasnd it because what you see in media and forums really aint how 90% of it is, chief Money! You need money. In order to make a studio that has a chance you need, imo: - a small, doable idea - a great engineerr - a great artist that can work in code and can animate - for one of the two to be a game designer, otherwise get a game designer that can work in code Making games is very hard, much harder than you think so find people you want to work with, be nice, be humble and start very, very small.Just how fucking impossible it is to get anything to work and not break the entire game. Even fucking FLOOR TILES are annoying as fuck to implement. Seriously, every game out there is held together by pins and needles and was probably crashing every ten seconds a week before release. Most "why didnt they do this?" question in most game discussion threads are things we probably already tried and couldn't do for a variety of reasons, most of them being "well if we did that wed have to redo everything else, which would then break everything, which would then ..." etc etc Yall dont even realize just HOW MANY game breaking bugs are in EVERY GAME YOU PLAY. People bitching about bugs and QA really make me sad because you have no idea just how many bugs were found AND fixed before a release. The amount of crunch and hard work those guys and gals go through is unbelievable and yet they receive most of the blame. Remember, QA's job is to find bugs, not to fix them ... and if they dont get fixed is because theres even higher priority things to fix by the actual dev team irl when people find out Im a game dev they become friendly and will then sometimes blurt out dumb shit like "Uncharted 3 sucked" only for me to verbally slap them. No, those people are fucking wizards and anything they do (outside of crunch) doest not, in fact, suck. Its such an insult to everyone who works in gamedev who doesnt work for Naughty Dog to be told that cause fuck, man, if THEY suck, then you must really not respect me cause Im nowhere near good enough to EVER work for ND. You know what sucks? Most games that get cancelled and never release, or most of the shovelware that comes out on the iOS store every day. Lack of perspective really gets to me

Ive been in games since 2006 ish and have worked for EA, Lab Zero, Spryfox, Gameloft ... I also have friends all over the industry, so I know my stuff I wont answer strict NDA stuff though, keep it within common sense. I've also had a great time working for most of these companies, EA being a particularly awesome place these last two years and I've no interest in trashing them ... or getting sued ;)

If you know how game development works or have a tech background you should know the myriad of reasons why not all bugs are fixed or why some things are fixed and not others. I appreciate the confidence, but I doubt youre a better engineer than every engineer we have at work and, for that particular bug Im sure theres a reason why it hasnt been adressed yet. As with all game development, we create, catch and fix bugs all the time before release and some still slip out, thats for a lot of different reasons, for example: we dont have time, they are not critical, they are hard to repro, they dont affect a large enough portion of the userbase, they are really hard to fix for non obvious reasons, fixing them would require touching really risky sections of code ... etc, etc. Thats just gamedev in general though, nothing particular to SWGoH. Bugs happen and bugs ship all of the time. You think the people who worked on Skyrim didnt know they were releasing a broken game? Of course they did, they were too busy fixing the bugs that were even worse, thats just the industry. The reality is that if you spent one day in our studio youd have a lot of these questions answered within an hour. Your second paragraph, that one starts going into specifics. Lets make sure we are using the royal "you" here, that means, the entirety of CG, the execs at EA and our partners at LF. Its not "me", Xavi, making every single decisions. I certainly make a few, but its a team effort and yeah, we are very judicious and have a lottttt of discussion regarding what goes in the game, when, how and why ... after all, we are the ones trusted with making the game, we play the game extensively and are the most successful EA mobile and SW game of all time.I have seen this narrative make its way across reddit since we released the relics. I simply cannot agree with it but I can see some people have taken it as fact which is unfortunate because thats just not so.Comparisons are fine, you can definitely talk to me about what modes Marvel has shipped that would benefit SWGoH, or how FE Heroes release cadence should be studied, or what Dragalia is doing, etc, etc. I think non tech comparisons are fun and interesting. However, some comparisons dont work and the WoW example does not, neither does the Marvel graphical quality. Im not nullifying your point, I'm just discussing your examples. Of course we are willing and working towards improving our systems and engine, but I dont think youll be giving me a lot of games that are in our situation, because other than Clash of Clans and Fire Age, there arent a ton of games out there with our longevity in the mobile market, which means a lot of examples fall flat because their strategy just wouldn't work for us.This is another phrase that comes out a lot. We create strategies based on the market, the numbers, our own intuition and desires as developers and other feedback sources. You have literally no idea who asks for things to be made and you are also implying things should only be made when we are asked to (either by fans or someone else) Thing is release cadences are really, really hard and have to be planned in advance. Some theories are correct, some arent and pivoting mid development is often hard or impossible. Ive seen fans criticize every single release only to praise it weeks or months later, relics and grand arena being great examples. We are in the middle of creating systems that will allow for more stuff to do and I think the amount of characters well release this year will be fun and exciting ... but of course we cant tell you all ahead of time and it leaves people with nothing to do but speculate. Thats fine, thats the world we live in. We are in nigh uncharted territory for a game this size of this longevity, there is no tried and true path for us and as the level of investment from players increases, so does their sense of "ownership", which in turn increases the risk of toxicity and overreaction. Again, thank you for your thoughts. I hope you realize Im not the games PR, just a team member with some insight on our process and a willingness to at least chat about it. A lot of your more precise questions cannot be fully answered in a public forum and Id love to chat about it in a pub once the apocalypse is over ;)

I can count with one hand the amount of times the community has brought up something we werent aware of already. We have a ton of checks and balances not just internally but with our partners as well. Some stuff will always slip, like Qui-Gonn's saber being blue that one time, but thats gamedev in generalUnfortunately, not at all. Sharing an engine doesn't equal sharing the code. We would have to completely start over, not to mention that even upgrading to a new version of Unity with new features can be extremely risky for an old game like ours. Going through all the permutations would veer into the confidential category, plus it would take forever. Comparing us to a game like WoW is also not even in the same ballpark. They have infinite resources, their own engine, dont deal with external IP and their release cadence is way, way different. The time spent fixing things or upgrading things will directly take the time away from making things. We try to fix things when we can, older phones not being supported freed up some polygon budgets after all. When our cadence was Galaxy of Marquees, notice that we didnt have many Legendaries in that timeframe nor did we have new modes, ships, capital ships or new TB's. The "nothing is free" mantra is very applicable here. We finished Lightside Geo which was a crazy amount of work, then did new movie content in the middle of Xmas break, two new capital ships and two new characters that are way beyond the scope of a heroes journey. If we had done one at a time, I'm sure we would have made more unique content for the event but two new characters way above Legendary specs in simultaneous development? With the same team? Crazy amount of work. At the end of the day, whether its visible or not, that comes and goes. People freaked out over Reys icon which is a tiny icon thats even tinier in game and that was enough for those folks to start making threads on reddit. That shows their passion and investment in the game and thats ultimately a good thing so I am not going to hate on them for that, but I wont overreact either.

Now that Im at my desk I can give you a better response. Reactions are always a very "shrug" moment for me, people will react, make crazy theories, assume those theories are real and apply them to whatever else (latest example, the job openings videos). This happens for bad stuff as well as good stuff so, to be honest, validation from the community is not something I expect, Id much rather focus on the work we are doing and be happy with the strides we are making. The HSTR stuff is fun, we know what these characters are capable of so witnessing the reaction is something we are pretty used to by now. That said, I'm happy to clear things out in a way that doesnt go into the weeds (because thats both private and confidential). The "4 months for this" comments are interesting because I wasnt aware that we worked on the GL Rey model for 4 months, reddit sure seems to think so? Like, the Raddus and the Finalizer came out in that time, as well as Finn and Poe. If you look at the event, regardless of your thoughts about how fun it is, we had to make 3 versions of Rey and 3 versions of Kylo (new models with old kits, duel versions with different anims and the player collectable versions) ... at the same time PLUS their ultimates, which you guys havent seen yet. If you add up all that work plus the cinematic (first ever battle cinematic in the game, not easy to make!) youre looking at literally 4x the frames of animation than any character weve ever made. This impacts all areas, sound, making character prefabs, vfx, tech risk ... on top of changes to the character kit on the design side and the other characters in the event like Lodent, Zorii, the new Snowtroopers, the FO Raider thats actually from the new Resistance show, first character from that series in our game, etc etc. Thats without even mentioning that GL's have all new UI on every single screen theyre in, thats also a significant amount of work art wise and engineering wise. So yeah, just to say its a lot of work and its a lot of NEW work which makes it more difficult because it adds R&D time, it adds new bugs, etc unlike something like the Darth Revan event which was a continuation of work we had done before. Plus, no offense but people outside the industry have no place in saying whether "4 months" is too long or too short to make something, thats completely arbitrary. We work on a lot of different things at the same time and our team size has stayed about the same for a long time. Im not going to break down how exactly things take to make because its a) not a reliable metric and b) something people will completely take out of context at the earliest possible convenience Regarding whether you think Finn and Rey are bad looking .. like you say, its subjective. I directed those models, as well as Kylo, Poe and the new Capital Ships and they are all made by the same character artist which has been the only character artist in the game for quite a number of years. Some critiques are correct (Finns idle pose is not very flattering) and some are not (old Finn looked better and/or more like Finn) or with Rey, I've seen several people say "why dont they use the Rey model from the promo video, that one looked good" ... um, we did, its the exact same model, the ingame texture is lower but thats expected. Remember, we make this game for a small screen on mobile phones, not for a youtuber playing on a 32 inch monitor on his PC who then zooms on a model till the pixels fill the screen then calls for us to get fired. This is exactly why I said in an old Q&A that I want to upgrade the lighting and rendering on an engine level, because thats what makes a substantive jump in quality. Comparing us to games like Marvel is just an unfair comparison, theyre a new game with 10+ poly models for their noname characters. GL Rey uses 2x the polys that any other characters and thats a big jump for us but still we are nowhere close to the Marvel numbers, that would just break the game if we started putting 10k+ poly models with 512 or 1024 textures. Thats why I was always careful to say we were raising our standard without bringing the competition up. Hopefully this clears up some of the confusion for you. Always happy to talk about our process and thank you for the insight

Yeah its all good, I appreciate all fans and reddit is definitely ... passionate. Notice that their excuse for wanting all of the artists shamed, fired and feathered is because I apparently bragged for 4 months about the amazing art when, really, all I did was: Not to get defensive, but thats not bragging, thats just communicating what were up to and not ashamed of the hard work we put in. Hey if you hate it, no worries, thanks for spending the time and hope you can still stick around but damn lol people are in a hurry to make that first hyperbolic post over there. If there is one thing I've learned from reddit is that 99% of all conspiracy theories in the world are not true, because even if our game has so many of them, and they're all false, what does that say about the rest of the world Nevertheless, well continue to do our thing and the next batch of characters should be pretty fun, I think you'll enjoy it

Thread Do tales of developer crunch decrease your enjoyment of the final product?
We need to separate crunch from developer abuse. In games we all work what is considered "crunch" at some point but the meaning of the word is getting diluted because "my" crunch is really nothing compared to Rockstar or Naughty Dog level crunch yet a lot of people think its equal. Then you have an abusive developer like Rockstar San Diego that 100% does not give a shit about its employees and that puts them well ahead of Naughty Dog in the "you fucked up" rankings. ND has displayed negligence to the nth degree, but its really nothing compared to the people running RSD To answer your question, sometimes. In the case of RDR2 I decided to not support those garbage policies and thus I havent played the game, in other games like Odin Sphere where I -have- to assume those people killed themselves over it, it makes me a bit sad and appreciative but I cant form a full opinion because I havent seen any sources talking about how hard it was to develop that game.

Something Id like to point out is that good people managers ensure the wellbeing of the employee first and foremost. Remarks like “they work as hard as they want to” speaks to massive negligence in regards to leadership. This particular brand of crunch (not enforced, employee initiated) happens a lot because the talent often WANTS to deliver the content being asked of them. Its the managers job to make people go home and lessen the workload so the talent doesn't feel pressured. Its also a bit of a false statement because the leadership sets the sprints and deliverables so theyre speaking out of both sides of their mouth when the messages are these: “you dont have to crunch if you want to” “These 4 characters need to be done to meet the deadline next week” One of the points of agile developing and dev tracking (using tools like Jira and whatnot) are there so that the talent can TELL you the amount of work they can do in a sprint and then you plan around that, not the other way around. On my game we deliver content at a pretty damn fast pace so we need to keep employee burnout in our minds at all times. We still do long hours here and there, gamedev is hard and all, but we set what we always think are reasonable timeframes and have cut content and features accordingly when we know it would mean heavy crunch for the talent.

I dont have a strong opinion because theyre just extremely foundational drawings. Its the characters you know by the guy who drew the NES Ninja Gaiden cinematics and art wise theyre much closer to Chrono Cross which, again makes a lot of sense. If he had done a few more rounds where he refined his ideas it would have been interesting where he would make edits, for what it is you can tell its meant to be used for a quick pitch You can definitely see how Toriyama took these ideas, grabbed the best bits and came up with some cool ideas. Toriyama still has some bad habits, hes used that Marle design in the past for Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball, but thats his role as a freelance designer, just get as much out as you can. His good use of color and basic shapes always made for really good 2D sprite interpretations of his work though

Gaspar first :) Not too much of a redesign, more of an updated! I like the classical look from the original, but I also see Gaspar as somebody who is a bit out of touch and not as good at disguising his magical nature as he thinks he is ... maybe he floats a bit by accident while he sleeps! I added some color accents reminiscent to his Zeal design and overall made him look a biiit more "magical gnome" like which I think fits him well

It already has, many companies have instituted WFH policies, I myself started working from home today and for a company like ours its not a small deal. Dealing with China specifically (outsourcers and the like) the Corona outbreak coincided with Chinese New Year so the work stoppage was mostly happening at the same time, however, thats for a very small subsection of production, for hardware manufacturers I think it will be a substantially bigger deal

On a purely technical level you can use bluestacks on your PC so its trivial. The issue is strategy. Doing things “just because” is something that is inherently risky and short sighted, I’ll elaborate cause this is a good thing to know. We have about 100 people working on the game at all times and, regardless of reddits opinion, we are all really busy at all times. Adding a completely new platform, including platform specific stuff (origin, steam, micro transactions, account migration, etc) Would need to be heavily researched, marketed, tested, optimized and would be a giant time sync for a good chunk of the team, including the art team. Many of our artistic choices, UI decisions and limitations are done because we are a mobile game meant to be seen on mobile devices. Turn it into a PC game and suddenly the demands and expectations would rise to a level that we 100% CANNOT commit to, not just from a fans perspective but internally and with our partners. This would also add a substantial amount of ongoing work for engineering and QA. Youd have to test the game on different PC builds, different video cards, have PC only bugs. Have PC only gameplay review sessions. We’d have to hire about 15 plus people just for this, and in order to to that we’d need to prove out that this would be a good move financially, which would take time away from our PM team from actually handling and balancing the current game economy. As you can see, these things branch out and spread rapidly. We work at a crazy rate of speed. One of the fastest in the industry, in fact, and we cant keep adding work to it because it will heavily compromise what we can do in the future (and we already fuck with it enough, its not like upping the poly limit on the characters was a small deal, to give you a very small example, I basically told my artist to do twice the work within the same timeframe). Hiring more people is not even a good solution most of the time, cause you have to add recruiting, training, oversight and management. Nothing is free in videogames, even the stuff that sounds trivial. All that aside, I think the new PvE stuff we have in the works is exciting and exactly what the game needs. I’m heavily involved with it and I’m keeping the player experience as a high priority on it.

All it would take for 99% of gamers “constructive feedback” to go away is to spend ONE day in a game studio and see what its actually like. Alas, thats not a thing that can happen. Thread Kotaku (Jason Schreier): Sources: EA Canceled A Star Wars: Battlefront Spinoff Last Year
Different per company, of course. Many projects that do ship get effectively “cancelled” a bunch of times before shipping (industry people use “pivot” sometimes but its the same thing, really) Thats why some games that have been in development for 5 plus years come out and it looks like its had maybe 2 years of development (FFXV, Diablo 3, etc) At EA, a game doesnt enter production until its greenlit, and getting greenlit is a big deal because thats when you start moving serious amount of resources, setting dates and spending money on building the team. Tons of games get “cancelled” before getting greenlit and this SW project was probably one of them. The stages between the beginning of a project and getting greenlit are many and its hard to say how much work is being put into any one of those stages, could be a number of prototypes, a vertical slice, maybe some proof of concept videos ... really depends on the team itself. Dead Space is infamous because the team basically built a very thorough, very expensive vertical slice before getting greenlit which .. well in theory its a very bad idea because of the risk involved and the precedent it set But it definitely worked out for them. So yeah, people certainly have their EA bias but this is in no way uncommon. People always assume a cancelled game would have been good and somehow the publisher is to blame for the cancellation But the reality is that most games get cancelled for -very- good reasons and its a good thing to pivot and change things up before shit gets really expensive

Thread Kobe: "There are WNBA stars 'who could play in NBA right now"
Just naming a random skinny dude in the NBA, nothing other than thatI was watching Calderon before he was in the NBA, well aware of how amazing a player he was. Physically speaking I dont think he was bigger, stornger and faster than every single player in the WNBA

But is she the biggest physical threat in her league? That was my point of comparison, that Im sure theres a WNBA player thats bigger, stronger or faster than one of the smaller, more skill based, NBA players. I understand the tennis comparison, btw, and I agree with it. Basketball is a different sport though

Well, as a creator you have to assume that some or most people wont like what you make no matter how good it actually is. I definitely sympathize with that argument, its something you have to acknowledge when you take on jobs like these And its a little shitty if people are taking that statement and using it for confirmation bias

Thread Ronaldo is the greatest talent in football history
I wouldnt say he was the worlds best at 17 (he was in the Brazil team that WON the world cup in 94 when he was 17 but he didnt play at all, Romario was much better then) but yes, he was incredible. I have him a notch below Zidane but I do love me some Ronaldo, extremely smart player

Thats really nice! Is it somewhere I could take a look? Would love to hear more opinions on this This project is a really good chance for me to use the skills I use in my everyday job but I never get to share them online, plus its a great fit for building a portfolio a Japanese company might relate to. Re: Magus. It definitely is a departure, but one Im comfortable with. As a concept artist you need to inject your own sense of flair and story into your designs, with Magus I wanted him to still have some Zeal roots in his wardrobe, and the more complex silhouette helps in selling him as a more complex character. I still adore the original design, but this project is less of an homage and more of a reinterpretation.

Hi Chrono fam, new year, got some vacay and I think Im ready for some more art :) Picking up where I left off, I wanted to get something with Ayla off the ground, and the feast seemed like a very natural thing to illustrate and ... make some changes, haha Looking forward to keep this project growing in 2020, your support on this means a lot so please stick around!

Makes sense to me! Basically I should pile up all the little houses around Cronos house and make a town out of it. Having a forest between nobility and everyone else makes enough sense within the setting, kind of like the gardens in Versailles, which are gigantic. Thanks for your input, it definitely helps and will be used! Thanks Bruce, your constant support over the years has been noticed and appreciated :) I still remember seeing your MGS4 OT and going "oh shit, this guy knows whats up" haha. Thanks for being there, I'm only getting started!

Happy Monday! The screenshot "project" is going to take a while and be ongoing, so in the meantime, I have more work to show for myself. Im also starting to make character sheets! These are usually1/3 pagers that showcase the character doing various personality based actions, this helps the teams get to know the character. For me, I really want to explore female Crono since thats my original design and I really want to flesh out the character. She should feel different enough from her male counterpart but still very much relatable

OK so the NEXT big thing I want to work on is a screenshot mockup. Im using Ni No Kuni as a "base" for this and Im also treating it as a chance to flesh out the world. Very early WIP, Guardia Town, 1000 AD This is something I can use ERA's help with. You can see Guardia Castle in the background, Im wondering if this should be a late game screenshot and have the Black Omen floating in the sky as well. This is NOT the MIllenial Fair grounds, so no Lenee Square here, no Gato but yes to random delicious chicken just waiting for you to eat it. What else? You can see I have two big spots open, what kind of houses or shops should be there? NPC's? Any ideas to help fill out this scene would be hugely helpful :)

Wasn't allowed to have a running art thread like he did in the previous forum. I was worried about it myself, checked with the mod team re: guidelines and made some adjustments (Im not selling anything, for example) FWIW, this forum would be a better place with an Orioto thread. This wouldnt be how I would air my grievances but I get it.

*crickets* Oh hi, I was always intent to return to this but, you know, professional game development and all that tends to take priority (boo!) However, yesterday I awoke to an AWESOME surprise via twitter! Check this out! HOLY SHIT! So, yeah, I was left pretty inspired! Went home and picked this up where I left off, starting with two new bsses, the Dragon Tank and, of course, finally, Dalton! For Dalton, I knew I wanted to lean heavily on the JoJo influences. Along with the Zeal fashion I had already established previously it seemed like a perfect fit even if it meant deviating from the original concept. I also had a cool idea for a "day in the life" sketch for Lucca, I imagine shed be very sleep deprived working on her various projects, wanted to capture one of those moments! Dont know how much I can commit to daily updates, but consider this project back on track! Thanks and let me know what you think!

Made some time for some repliesOh thats a good suggestion, I'll work some in at some pointEh, I usually post around noon on weekdays and this thread usually disappears from the front page within ten minutes ... which is expected because "topics of the day" drown stuff out. I want to get to all that stuff! I dont have good ideas for Lavos yet ... except for INSIDE LAVOS I want to make a dungeon design that looks a bit like a tropical rainforest mixed with, you know, giant alien insides.I was super thrilled and later I found hes a fellow Spaniard! Super flattering stuff.I ... don't like CC. I might eventually make a fake idea pitch that wonders what a different Chrono sequel could be, just from a visual and character design standpoint. At that point I would borrow the few things I liked from Cross, but thats about it. However, hey, if Chrono Cross HAD BEEN about two realities being created when Crono was saved from Lavois in the original CT and you play AS Crono in the Archipielago trying to piece the mystery together ... that might have been dopeThank you! I havent, not because I would mind or anything, I just think theyre well defined characters because they have character arcs and speaking roles, but Crono doesnt really. Hes a template character and, as such, the player should be able to decide.Thank you! I try to keep the OP updated with the latest so people can catch up quickly, hopefully that helped :)

Oh dang, thats some high praise. Thank you! I think some designs, like the Dragon Tank, naturally fit with Toriyamas interest while someone like Dalton can be even more effective if you are willing to go even more out there (ie: a parody of Zeal resident who are very "out there" to begin with)Thanks bud! Hopefully nobody at work notices Im doing some of these on work computers, hahaI've missed it as well! Im not great at recognizing fatigue so before I knew it, it had been months! I'm gad to be back on it and yeah Zombor and Nizbel are on the deck :)

Working on the next character based illustration, this time its Robo and the time the party initially found him in the future. In my eyes he would be a lot more broken down than he was in the original game. This is a WIP, should be done sometime tomorrow :) I also imagine the players outfits would be a bit more post apocalyptic here, hence Lucca covering her face with her scarf, etc

Todays update since we got some little extra pressure to perform ;), Masa and Mune! I always thought it was weird that they look like aliens? I instead made a few subtle changes, I pictured them as Reptite descendants that were abducted by Zeal and experimented on until they became magical beings of some sort. Lore is unclear but I wanted to reuse some of the Reptite fashion I developed along with Zeal fashion. Look ahead for their combined form tomorrow!

Alright, lets get going with the bosses. Its a busy time for me so Im moving updates to Fridays for a little while. Lets start at the beginning, with the Chancellor/Yakra combo! I made some changes so that I can tie him to his monster form in a bit. I also used the opportunity to add some extra flair, maybe his sense of fashion has Zeal hints to it? Maybe he makes some odd choices since hes just pretending to be human? At the end of the day you cant go all out since its the first boss so just introduce some concepts and leave room to level up later. For Yakra proper, how many did this? I certainly did So, really, the concepts only job was to clear that up and have fun with the shape. No need to reconcept a lot here, its a fun animal shape that has some extra shit going on. The fight itself is pretty good though, great choice for a first boss I did almost made a concept that followed my initial impression of the sprite, but eh, its fine as is LOL

Oh thats NDA’d to hell and back, showing concept art would need approval from EA AND Lucasfilm. Not happening. Two big redesigns were Canderous and Mission. Canderous cause he didnt feel very Star Wars so I added some Mandalorian details and had to reconcept his boots from scratch cause his OG design had nothing. Also gave his face an update, more Duke Nukem/Ron Perlman/buff Anthony Bourdain. Mission had a default face so I tried to make her look more like a unique character and I did a once over on her clothes (adding buckles and whatnot, making it cohesive) Oh and for Bastila I had to find a happy medium between her promo art and ingame model. Neither were very detailed so I had to make sense of all the patterns going on in her clothes. The other designs were handled by other artists. I also presented, storyboarded and put together the cinematics for all the KOTOR stuff. If you play the game or google the models you'll see the end result You can see my fat ass (bad choice of clothing that day ahhh bad hair day also aah) on the Star Wars show thing they did, Im talking about Revan a lot there

Thank you so much for your detailed impressions! I read them a few times and really made me happy to see my renditions connect with people. Your Magus comments are ones I agree with. I love the v1 design and think when he joins the party he could adopt that look, maybe thats the way to do it, he would lose the horns in that instance but I think that makes sense? Magus is the one character that has a lot of looks in the game (well, Glenn too) and I love when characters change wardrobes in RPGs Speaking of which, maybe Crono should sport a new look after he gets saved? MmmHaha, how long is never? I would be down for a sprite artist or a 3D artist to make renditions of these designs, but thats as far as it'll go. Its high praise though, thank you :)No relation to Mana, those designs just happen to be similar even from the source material. Toriyama is also a big influence on me since I was a kid, I used to be THE guy who could draw Dragon Ball. His game stuff is tricky because his clean designs work great for sprites but can be very divisive when taken to 3D so I needed to be able to separate myself from it and look at the core of the characters. As far as my tastes go, each change to the character (muscles, jewelry, etc) helps turn them into a truer version of themselves that also enriches and represents the lore of the game to the way that I view it. I could have taken these designs and do a complete 180 as well but part of the fun is working within the constraints and exercise creativity that way.Jaja, muchas gracias!

Quick update. Im halfway done with the Chancellor from 600 AD, the idea is to do a pass on the main bosses. However, this is a busy time of the year for me, lots of things to work on for my gamedev job (meaning my extra morning time is now work time, lol), Im working on a couple of freelance projects that should be pretty neat AND Im tabling at EVO pretty soon and I need to get cracking on new prints. This thread may become a once a week update type of thing, that way i can work on it in smaller increments thorugh the week and hopefully give you a meaty update on Fridays or something.Glad you noticed! I think they did a beautiful job with the stone age, full of color and depth but yes, content wise it got the short end of the stick and its such a pivotal part of the game that if you got to know the Reptites a bit more (maybe even if you got to visit a peaceful Reptite village) you would be able to have a lot more empathy for them by the time Azala makes her final speech or find their lair later in the presentThank you! Im able to pick and choose bits and pieces to change from work thats already magnificent so I dont think I deserve much praise but I appreciate it all the same <3

Hello there, as discussed previously, 2300 AD got empty fast so lets move on to 65,000,000 B.C. and see what we can do Kino is a pretty basic character, if he reads like a wannabe hero who doesnt have his shit together and may or may not fuck up at any moment then mission accomplished. You also need to get the impression that he can grow into not being a total loser, so I couldn't go too wild here. Next will be some fun stuff as its Reptite time

Found a couple of older sketches as I looked through my sketchbook for con prep First one is more interesting, the fashion seems more tropical, like FF X but the overall influence is very Amano ... which would be a fun exercise in itself, to guess how he would have approached this game This one is right before I got started while waiting for Japanese class to start. I think 3 days later I did the Crono sketch from the beginning of the project. You can definitely see Im figuring out the shape language still.

Couldnt get to an update yesterday but I made time today :) Stone Age doesnt have much, but it has reptites! I wanted to set the look before getting to Azala who, ultimately will really embody the whole culture. I made some changes from the original, they had pink skin in places and instead I made that coral'ish armor. I want them to look smart, having tools, weapons and armor, I wanted them to look like the top of the food chain and establish humans as the obvious lower class citizens.

The 3 gurus Lavos Miscellany of important bosses/NPCs I could also start doing character sheets. Animation studies (key poses) and weapon concepts Or maybe world design? Lenee Square, Magus Castle, the Epoch, End of Time. That type if stuff would get a redesign pass as well. If you have an opinion, let me know!
