Yeah its all good, I appreciate all fans and reddit is definitely ... passionate. Notice that their excuse for wanting all of the artists shamed, fired and feathered is because I apparently bragged for 4 months about the amazing art when, really, all I did was: Not to get defensive, but thats not bragging, thats just communicating what were up to and not ashamed of the hard work we put in. Hey if you hate it, no worries, thanks for spending the time and hope you can still stick around but damn lol people are in a hurry to make that first hyperbolic post over there. If there is one thing I've learned from reddit is that 99% of all conspiracy theories in the world are not true, because even if our game has so many of them, and they're all false, what does that say about the rest of the world Nevertheless, well continue to do our thing and the next batch of characters should be pretty fun, I think you'll enjoy it

Last Jedi Luke by a mile who, by the way WAS still faithful to the original. Character development is NOT equal to "hes not the same character anymore". With age and experience he added layers, its been 30 years, thats what SHOULD happen.

The drawings are good but the fashion choices, aside from Scar, do not represent the characters personalities and status, Rafiki especially so. Having a lion wear Leopard print is a pretty big missed opportunity because the artist could have explored the concept of “what print would the Lion Queen wear” with more creativity

Thanks for the analysis, I just knew from the get go that the animations plus the raw env assets put it way past the SNES, Saturn maaaaybe, but it would be a very inefficient idea, the Tales of Phantasia remake is about the level you should expect. I do think its hilarious to say "moving towards 16 bit". The move has been made, surpassed, cleared, made obsolete long time ago

Just finished it today, really loved most things about it, especially the quality of the writing and the English VA was really remarkable. Was surprised that it ended up being one big storyline, at the beginning I thought it would be more of a Phoenix Wright chapter structure. Really impressive tech and character models as well On the negative, while I loved the humor, the action sequences and the "look at porn reaction time" took me completely out of the experience. Definitely a sore point that nearly destroyed some characters like Mizuki

Thread Do tales of developer crunch decrease your enjoyment of the final product?
We need to separate crunch from developer abuse. In games we all work what is considered "crunch" at some point but the meaning of the word is getting diluted because "my" crunch is really nothing compared to Rockstar or Naughty Dog level crunch yet a lot of people think its equal. Then you have an abusive developer like Rockstar San Diego that 100% does not give a shit about its employees and that puts them well ahead of Naughty Dog in the "you fucked up" rankings. ND has displayed negligence to the nth degree, but its really nothing compared to the people running RSD To answer your question, sometimes. In the case of RDR2 I decided to not support those garbage policies and thus I havent played the game, in other games like Odin Sphere where I -have- to assume those people killed themselves over it, it makes me a bit sad and appreciative but I cant form a full opinion because I havent seen any sources talking about how hard it was to develop that game.

I would know, I made it (and we were still in GAF at that point)Its 6am and Im in bed so not at this time haha but a quick note. If ND’s crunch problem is related to talent not being able/willing to stop themselves from overworking themselves to near death just imagine how its like for indies with WAY less management, WAY more financial pressure and WAY more development difficulty. This is not all that different from Cuphead and 90% of indies ARE the Cuphead story without the happy ending

I always thought he had a very playful personality, I see him as more of a swordmaster, a war hero, a flamboyant old man, somebody who likes to laugh and tell stories, possibly blind. OK so the ones "who cant cut it" will leave and who cares when there are literal floods of people who will do anything to work on the next Naughty Dog games. Its an ever growing resource of fresh talent that you can grab, squeeze for five years and when theyre done just find the next batch I think crunch should be abolished and have made several posts and threads on the matter so Im playing devils advocate here,, the company just hopes consumers dont find out and that it doesnt harm the recruiting process. Something Id like to point out is that good people managers ensure the wellbeing of the employee first and foremost. Remarks like “they work as hard as they want to” speaks to massive negligence in regards to leadership. This particular brand of crunch (not enforced, employee initiated) happens a lot because the talent often WANTS to deliver the content being asked of them. Its the managers job to make people go home and lessen the workload so the talent doesn't feel pressured. Its also a bit of a false statement because the leadership sets the sprints and deliverables so theyre speaking out of both sides of their mouth when the messages are these: “you dont have to crunch if you want to” “These 4 characters need to be done to meet the deadline next week” One of the points of agile developing and dev tracking (using tools like Jira and whatnot) are there so that the talent can TELL you the amount of work they can do in a sprint and then you plan around that, not the other way around. On my game we deliver content at a pretty damn fast pace so we need to keep employee burnout in our minds at all times. We still do long hours here and there, gamedev is hard and all, but we set what we always think are reasonable timeframes and have cut content and features accordingly when we know it would mean heavy crunch for the talent.

I dont have a strong opinion because theyre just extremely foundational drawings. Its the characters you know by the guy who drew the NES Ninja Gaiden cinematics and art wise theyre much closer to Chrono Cross which, again makes a lot of sense. If he had done a few more rounds where he refined his ideas it would have been interesting where he would make edits, for what it is you can tell its meant to be used for a quick pitch You can definitely see how Toriyama took these ideas, grabbed the best bits and came up with some cool ideas. Toriyama still has some bad habits, hes used that Marle design in the past for Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball, but thats his role as a freelance designer, just get as much out as you can. His good use of color and basic shapes always made for really good 2D sprite interpretations of his work though

Well hello there. Seeing how today is the 25th anniversary of the game figured this was as good a day as any for an update. Moreover, lets finally get to the Three Gurus! Gaspar first :) Not too much of a redesign, more of an updated! I like the classical look from the original, but I also see Gaspar as somebody who is a bit out of touch and not as good at disguising his magical nature as he thinks he is ... maybe he floats a bit by accident while he sleeps! I added some color accents reminiscent to his Zeal design and overall made him look a biiit more "magical gnome" like which I think fits him well

Thank you! The rewards really do come from the work itself and the chance to make something that resonates with the fanbase. And if eventually Square Enix wants to hire me that would be cool too

Thread Do you think Corona virus might affect gaming landscape?
It already has, many companies have instituted WFH policies, I myself started working from home today and for a company like ours its not a small deal. They have handled it extremely well though, so they deserve a good deal of credit. Teams will require some adjustment time so I wouldn't be surprised by delays, at the very least. Dealing with China specifically (outsourcers and the like) the Corona outbreak coincided with Chinese New Year so the work stoppage was mostly happening at the same time, however, thats for a very small subsection of production, for hardware manufacturers I think it will be a substantially bigger deal

Thread Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes |OT| There Is Another
On a purely technical level you can use bluestacks on your PC so its trivial. The issue is strategy. Doing things “just because” is something that is inherently risky and short sighted, I’ll elaborate cause this is a good thing to know. We have about 100 people working on the game at all times and, regardless of reddits opinion, we are all really busy at all times. Adding a completely new platform, including platform specific stuff (origin, steam, micro transactions, account migration, etc) Would need to be heavily researched, marketed, tested, optimized and would be a giant time sync for a good chunk of the team, including the art team. Many of our artistic choices, UI decisions and limitations are done because we are a mobile game meant to be seen on mobile devices. Turn it into a PC game and suddenly the demands and expectations would rise to a level that we 100% CANNOT commit to, not just from a fans perspective but internally and with our partners. This would also add a substantial amount of ongoing work for engineering and QA. Youd have to test the game on different PC builds, different video cards, have PC only bugs. Have PC only gameplay review sessions. We’d have to hire about 15 plus people just for this, and in order to to that we’d need to prove out that this would be a good move financially, which would take time away from our PM team from actually handling and balancing the current game economy. As you can see, these things branch out and spread rapidly. We work at a crazy rate of speed. One of the fastest in the industry, in fact, and we cant keep adding work to it because it will heavily compromise what we can do in the future (and we already fuck with it enough, its not like upping the poly limit on the characters was a small deal, to give you a very small example, I basically told my artist to do twice the work within the same timeframe). Hiring more people is not even a good solution most of the time, cause you have to add recruiting, training, oversight and management. Nothing is free in videogames, even the stuff that sounds trivial. All that aside, I think the new PvE stuff we have in the works is exciting and exactly what the game needs. I’m heavily involved with it and I’m keeping the player experience as a high priority on it.

Thread Halo developer speaks their mind - "I don't get why <dev> didn't do <thing>?"
From reading the replies, I feel like people internalize this very strongly and think the dev is talking to YOU and its making you deaf to the actual point which is having to hear from hundreds to thousands of people telling him/her how to do their job in very non polite terms. All it would take for 99% of gamers “constructive feedback” to go away is to spend ONE day in a game studio and see what its actually like. Alas, thats not a thing that can happen. People who think you just need to be more transparent are showing a lot of naïveté there

Hes totally right. Hell get blasted because God knows most fanbases love calling you all sorts of shit but as soon as you dare to send criticism back their way they become ultra sensitive little things. Im always down with constructive criticism from outside the industry. You all can see things from the outside that we sometimes miss. Its when people go to the next step (because of the usual lack of empathy, inflated ego, arrogance, etc) and start telling devs not “I dont like it” but “do it like this” that well just stop paying attention.

Thats some massive revisionist history. Thread Kotaku (Jason Schreier): Sources: EA Canceled A Star Wars: Battlefront Spinoff Last Year
Different per company, of course. Many projects that do ship get effectively “cancelled” a bunch of times before shipping (industry people use “pivot” sometimes but its the same thing, really) Thats why some games that have been in development for 5 plus years come out and it looks like its had maybe 2 years of development (FFXV, Diablo 3, etc) At EA, a game doesnt enter production until its greenlit, and getting greenlit is a big deal because thats when you start moving serious amount of resources, setting dates and spending money on building the team. Tons of games get “cancelled” before getting greenlit and this SW project was probably one of them. The stages between the beginning of a project and getting greenlit are many and its hard to say how much work is being put into any one of those stages, could be a number of prototypes, a vertical slice, maybe some proof of concept videos ... really depends on the team itself. Dead Space is infamous because the team basically built a very thorough, very expensive vertical slice before getting greenlit which .. well in theory its a very bad idea because of the risk involved and the precedent it set But it definitely worked out for them. So yeah, people certainly have their EA bias but this is in no way uncommon. People always assume a cancelled game would have been good and somehow the publisher is to blame for the cancellation But the reality is that most games get cancelled for -very- good reasons and its a good thing to pivot and change things up before shit gets really expensive

Re: Magus. It definitely is a departure, but one Im comfortable with. As a concept artist you need to inject your own sense of flair and story into your designs, with Magus I wanted him to still have some Zeal roots in his wardrobe, and the more complex silhouette helps in selling him as a more complex character. I still adore the original design, but this project is less of an homage and more of a reinterpretation.

Hi Chrono fam, new year, got some vacay and I think Im ready for some more art :) Picking up where I left off, I wanted to get something with Ayla off the ground, and the feast seemed like a very natural thing to illustrate and ... make some changes, haha Looking forward to keep this project growing in 2020, your support on this means a lot so please stick around!

Makes sense to me! Basically I should pile up all the little houses around Cronos house and make a town out of it. Having a forest between nobility and everyone else makes enough sense within the setting, kind of like the gardens in Versailles, which are gigantic. Thanks for your input, it definitely helps and will be used! Thanks Bruce, your constant support over the years has been noticed and appreciated :) I still remember seeing your MGS4 OT and going "oh shit, this guy knows whats up" haha. Happy Monday! The screenshot "project" is going to take a while and be ongoing, so in the meantime, I have more work to show for myself. Im also starting to make character sheets! These are usually1/3 pagers that showcase the character doing various personality based actions, this helps the teams get to know the character. For me, I really want to explore female Crono since thats my original design and I really want to flesh out the character. She should feel different enough from her male counterpart but still very much relatable

OK so the NEXT big thing I want to work on is a screenshot mockup. Im using Ni No Kuni as a "base" for this and Im also treating it as a chance to flesh out the world. Very early WIP, Guardia Town, 1000 AD This is something I can use ERA's help with. You can see Guardia Castle in the background, Im wondering if this should be a late game screenshot and have the Black Omen floating in the sky as well. This is NOT the MIllenial Fair grounds, so no Lenee Square here, no Gato but yes to random delicious chicken just waiting for you to eat it. What else? You can see I have two big spots open, what kind of houses or shops should be there? NPC's? Any ideas to help fill out this scene would be hugely helpful :)

Wasn't allowed to have a running art thread like he did in the previous forum. I was worried about it myself, checked with the mod team re: guidelines and made some adjustments (Im not selling anything, for example) FWIW, this forum would be a better place with an Orioto thread. This wouldnt be how I would air my grievances but I get it.

*crickets* Oh hi, I was always intent to return to this but, you know, professional game development and all that tends to take priority (boo!) However, yesterday I awoke to an AWESOME surprise via twitter! Check this out! HOLY SHIT! So, yeah, I was left pretty inspired! Went home and picked this up where I left off, starting with two new bsses, the Dragon Tank and, of course, finally, Dalton! For Dalton, I knew I wanted to lean heavily on the JoJo influences. Along with the Zeal fashion I had already established previously it seemed like a perfect fit even if it meant deviating from the original concept. I also had a cool idea for a "day in the life" sketch for Lucca, I imagine shed be very sleep deprived working on her various projects, wanted to capture one of those moments! Dont know how much I can commit to daily updates, but consider this project back on track! Thanks and let me know what you think!

Made some time for some repliesOh thats a good suggestion, I'll work some in at some pointEh, I usually post around noon on weekdays and this thread usually disappears from the front page within ten minutes ... which is expected because "topics of the day" drown stuff out. I want to get to all that stuff! I dont have good ideas for Lavos yet ... except for INSIDE LAVOS I want to make a dungeon design that looks a bit like a tropical rainforest mixed with, you know, giant alien insides.I was super thrilled and later I found hes a fellow Spaniard! Super flattering stuff.I ... don't like CC. I might eventually make a fake idea pitch that wonders what a different Chrono sequel could be, just from a visual and character design standpoint. At that point I would borrow the few things I liked from Cross, but thats about it. However, hey, if Chrono Cross HAD BEEN about two realities being created when Crono was saved from Lavois in the original CT and you play AS Crono in the Archipielago trying to piece the mystery together ... that might have been dopeThank you! I havent, not because I would mind or anything, I just think theyre well defined characters because they have character arcs and speaking roles, but Crono doesnt really. Hes a template character and, as such, the player should be able to decide.Thank you! I try to keep the OP updated with the latest so people can catch up quickly, hopefully that helped :)

I think some designs, like the Dragon Tank, naturally fit with Toriyamas interest while someone like Dalton can be even more effective if you are willing to go even more out there (ie: a parody of Zeal resident who are very "out there" to begin with)Thanks bud! Hopefully nobody at work notices Im doing some of these on work computers, hahaI've missed it as well! Im not great at recognizing fatigue so before I knew it, it had been months! Working on the next character based illustration, this time its Robo and the time the party initially found him in the future. In my eyes he would be a lot more broken down than he was in the original game. This is a WIP, should be done sometime tomorrow :) I also imagine the players outfits would be a bit more post apocalyptic here, hence Lucca covering her face with her scarf, etc

Todays update since we got some little extra pressure to perform ;), Masa and Mune! I always thought it was weird that they look like aliens? I instead made a few subtle changes, I pictured them as Reptite descendants that were abducted by Zeal and experimented on until they became magical beings of some sort. Lore is unclear but I wanted to reuse some of the Reptite fashion I developed along with Zeal fashion. Look ahead for their combined form tomorrow!

Alright, lets get going with the bosses. Its a busy time for me so Im moving updates to Fridays for a little while. Lets start at the beginning, with the Chancellor/Yakra combo! I made some changes so that I can tie him to his monster form in a bit. I also used the opportunity to add some extra flair, maybe his sense of fashion has Zeal hints to it? Maybe he makes some odd choices since hes just pretending to be human? At the end of the day you cant go all out since its the first boss so just introduce some concepts and leave room to level up later. For Yakra proper, how many did this? I certainly did So, really, the concepts only job was to clear that up and have fun with the shape. No need to reconcept a lot here, its a fun animal shape that has some extra shit going on. The fight itself is pretty good though, great choice for a first boss I did almost made a concept that followed my initial impression of the sprite, but eh, its fine as is LOL

Oh thats NDA’d to hell and back, showing concept art would need approval from EA AND Lucasfilm. Not happening. Two big redesigns were Canderous and Mission. Canderous cause he didnt feel very Star Wars so I added some Mandalorian details and had to reconcept his boots from scratch cause his OG design had nothing. Also gave his face an update, more Duke Nukem/Ron Perlman/buff Anthony Bourdain. Mission had a default face so I tried to make her look more like a unique character and I did a once over on her clothes (adding buckles and whatnot, making it cohesive) Oh and for Bastila I had to find a happy medium between her promo art and ingame model. Neither were very detailed so I had to make sense of all the patterns going on in her clothes. The other designs were handled by other artists. I also presented, storyboarded and put together the cinematics for all the KOTOR stuff. If you play the game or google the models you'll see the end result You can see my fat ass (bad choice of clothing that day ahhh bad hair day also aah) on the Star Wars show thing they did, Im talking about Revan a lot there

Thank you so much for your detailed impressions! I read them a few times and really made me happy to see my renditions connect with people. Your Magus comments are ones I agree with. I love the v1 design and think when he joins the party he could adopt that look, maybe thats the way to do it, he would lose the horns in that instance but I think that makes sense? Magus is the one character that has a lot of looks in the game (well, Glenn too) and I love when characters change wardrobes in RPGs Speaking of which, maybe Crono should sport a new look after he gets saved? MmmHaha, how long is never? I would be down for a sprite artist or a 3D artist to make renditions of these designs, but thats as far as it'll go. Its high praise though, thank you :)No relation to Mana, those designs just happen to be similar even from the source material. Toriyama is also a big influence on me since I was a kid, I used to be THE guy who could draw Dragon Ball. His game stuff is tricky because his clean designs work great for sprites but can be very divisive when taken to 3D so I needed to be able to separate myself from it and look at the core of the characters. As far as my tastes go, each change to the character (muscles, jewelry, etc) helps turn them into a truer version of themselves that also enriches and represents the lore of the game to the way that I view it. I could have taken these designs and do a complete 180 as well but part of the fun is working within the constraints and exercise creativity that way.Jaja, muchas gracias!

Quick update. Im halfway done with the Chancellor from 600 AD, the idea is to do a pass on the main bosses. However, this is a busy time of the year for me, lots of things to work on for my gamedev job (meaning my extra morning time is now work time, lol), Im working on a couple of freelance projects that should be pretty neat AND Im tabling at EVO pretty soon and I need to get cracking on new prints. This thread may become a once a week update type of thing, that way i can work on it in smaller increments thorugh the week and hopefully give you a meaty update on Fridays or something.Glad you noticed! I think they did a beautiful job with the stone age, full of color and depth but yes, content wise it got the short end of the stick and its such a pivotal part of the game that if you got to know the Reptites a bit more (maybe even if you got to visit a peaceful Reptite village) you would be able to have a lot more empathy for them by the time Azala makes her final speech or find their lair later in the presentThank you! Im able to pick and choose bits and pieces to change from work thats already magnificent so I dont think I deserve much praise but I appreciate it all the same <3

Hello there, as discussed previously, 2300 AD got empty fast so lets move on to 65,000,000 B.C. and see what we can do Kino is a pretty basic character, if he reads like a wannabe hero who doesnt have his shit together and may or may not fuck up at any moment then mission accomplished. You also need to get the impression that he can grow into not being a total loser, so I couldn't go too wild here. Next will be some fun stuff as its Reptite time

I think 3 days later I did the Crono sketch from the beginning of the project. You can definitely see Im figuring out the shape language still.

Couldnt get to an update yesterday but I made time today :) Stone Age doesnt have much, but it has reptites! I wanted to set the look before getting to Azala who, ultimately will really embody the whole culture. I made some changes from the original, they had pink skin in places and instead I made that coral'ish armor. I want them to look smart, having tools, weapons and armor, I wanted them to look like the top of the food chain and establish humans as the obvious lower class citizens.

With Lavos I do intend to follow up on the three phases, although from my own perspective. Only as an adult (as in, a few years ago) did I notice his 2nd phase looked like Cell, I always saw the top of his head AS the head so I'll make a design based on how I saw it. Same thing with the core, I didnt see the eyeball, instead I saw the face of an old man. The idea of an old ass parasite that keeps covering himself in armor because its afraid of death is very alluring to me, so I'll try to push those concepts. I also like the idea of the inside of Lavos being a habitat of sorts so hopefully I'll get around to explore how a mini dungeon would look like in there. With Magus his silhouette could use a bit of cleaning, these character sketches are there to push the idea moreso than to provide accurate reference (hence the floating hair. Once I do a character render of him that will get addressed. Glad people like Johnny, mechanical stuff is deefinitely outside of my comfort zone.

Time to get started on 2300 AD! Not a ton of NPC's for this area, well, at least Id like more ... but its pretty damn memorable! Maybe most memorable of all is Johnny, I remember being REALLY excited for the race sequence in Mode 7 as it was used heavily to promote the game in magazine and TV ads, it looked amazing! In the spirit of change, I wanted him to have the one legged look and, if that means he transforms into a 3 wheel vehicle, thats fine. I liked the Greaser look so I tried to push it a bit more, made the leather jacket orange for some better contrast, kept the BADYEAR of course and went a little extra Kamina on the sunglasses because how could I not.;)

Late update today, work has been the last 2 days. Anyways, Doan. I think his original design is ... fine but theres a lot of room to do something more significant here. 300 years after the apocalypse humans have become tribal again, with the lack of food, sunshine, probably excess radiation and whatever else, humans should look slightly different, especially as they age and deteriorate it shouldnt be shocking to see cybernetic implants and discolored skin. They would still look for trinkets, they would still adorn their leaders with ways to distinguish them, this kind of stuff is prevalent through human history and it would persist even in 2300

Okay, good to go. Thank you so much for the PM's and help on these :) Rounding up the Magus Army, Flea and Slash! I wanted to keep Flea fun, alluring, magical and still change elements from his portrayal that just havent aged well. Hopefully this resonates well. Slash has a similar challenge. I don't think they gave him giant lips and dark skin as a malicious gesture but that's not something I will be partaking in so changes were needed. I liked the idea of making him a magical swordmaster because that gives us a bit more variety and fleshes out the world more. We already have Crono, Frog, Cyrus and other people fighting in more traditional means so lets come up with something that feels like a very different style for a character of this type.

These sketches are getting more and more complex (look at Flea compared to Crono) and while thats a good level of detail for an NPC, the main characters should get a more thorough look So thats what I did on my weekend These take a bit of time to do so I wont be making my way through the other playable characters anytime soon, but its nice to be able to have something closer to finished/publishable quality with this project :)

Thank you so much Noé! Getting positive feedback is nice regardless of where it comes from, but having it come from peers is a special feeling. Im really glad I started this because to be honest, my art production was slowing to a crawl. I really like my job but I dont get to draw every day, hell, sometimes I dont draw for weeks as I often have to make cinematics, do 3D work, sub in for art directing stuff, work on Lucas submissions, etc etc and, as you know, when you get in games your mindset is to be as helpful as possible so you forget to be helpful to yourself, thus a project where even after an hour of work I could produce something that would (hopefully) resonate with people was a perfect way to get back into drawing daily. I think my main piece of advice if youre thinking of doing a project like this is to come with that POV you described, you are not removing or "fixing" the original work, you are simply roleplaying. Toriyama in the 90's was just a factory of concepts, with a DQ game coming out every other year plus this game you can examine this work and tell that hes just mixing and matching, as usual with him, if you can get him in a position to let loose on mechanical designs thats when you get "the good shit" and he always does his best when not limited to a design palette, so I actually think his CT work is so good almost by sheer luck, not a lot of people are out there praising his Dragon Quest VI work eventhough its from the same era. If you were going to do FF VI its a great opportunity to go with "Amanos designs need to be interpreted in order to work in a game,. what are my decisions and how are they different from the shipped product" Super happy you like the female Crono concept, thats the one I tried my hardest on and a cool opportunity to provide something completely new. Making a concept sheet is a great idea and I think shes the character to explore in it (plus male Crono already got a finished illustration) As you know, designing bad guys is always the coolest job ;) Dont have to adhere to all them pesky rules ;)

You played it a bit late which doesn't discredit your opinion at all but in 1996 having your big bad last boss be a sad sack once you took away all the pomp and circumstance was actually pretty OUT THERE at the time, especially when the characters have a chance to reflect and notice the truth. A few months before I had just beaten FF VI where the last boss was literally a God. As you say having the last boss be an ever present threat during the entire game was really fucking awesome, it gave the entire experience a feeling of immediacy which few games have been able to replicate. If the game was to ever be remade I do think the last series of fights could be revamped so that fighting Lavos Shell can be a different experience (instead of the lazy boss rush)

Its extremely custom animation based which makes it harder to replicate at a base level also, DS gets ... misunderstood a lot. Some developer think Hard’! Is DS others think Bonfire! BTW Land of the Lustrous is perfect in 3D, could not see it being as good a fit as a 2D show In the 90’s it was a bit of a point if pride to hand animate mechas, water, etc so Im a little sad to see that stuff go but its such a huge time saver that those 3D shows probably couldnt get made otherwise

I dont see it as a big deal. Enjoy things however you like and it doesn't limit to videogames. Its like saying you didnt read a book because you listened to an audiobook instead. It reeks of insecurity from the gatekeeping crowd. People get too hung up on the exceptions. If some person came up to me and was like “Im awesome I beat Sekiro in a weekend” only to later find out they used an easy mod then yeah I’ll be like “LOL OK” but that BARELY ever happens. Most of the time people just want to be included and have fun in a way that caters to them and thats not something to be dicks about.

Thread Top ten Elden ring bosses... created by fans
Oh OK so theres nothing sinister about the guy from what I can tell, just surface level "make art for me for exposure" stuff. Bit manipulative but no different than most people out there For what its worth, and given the quality of the work, $400 for 1st place is incredibly cheap. Having had a semi popular Dark Souls art project online, I will say that there is a LOT to gain from the exposure some of these artists will receive, the 2nd place artist, for instance ... that level of work is well above the price he received but I will probably look him up when I need to hire a 2D artist in the near future. Being featured in a Vaati video DOES have inherent value because he is highlighting the winners in a way that will benefit them Im in no way saying exposure is a thing to be happy about, Im just saying in this particular case, the exposure from the contest is greater value than the paltry monetary reward. For the work involved, 1st place should have gotten about 5k, 4k for 2nd place and so on

Good luck, good design and good name but yikes dude, you’re in for a rough time. Learn how to make games first. Not tutorials, MAKE something first, a small puzzle game or something. You’re in for some MAJOR crashes so its better to focus on small experiences first. Attempting to make your dream game as your first game is a big, very typical, very damaging, mistake. I dont want to sound negative, but its not like Im new to these things AND I have worked on and shipped a fighting game before. Theyre just about the hardest game to make.

I dont think their games are anywhere close to amazing, you enjoy them and a lot of others do, great! You want MK games, cool, theres a shitload of them and they are made in a very particular way that is antithetical to EVERYTHING a Virtua Fighter game is about, regardless of quality. Its not something that fans want and its been made pretty clear in this thread. I dont want Nintendo making Last of Us either, btw, and I love both companies. NRS will continue their cycle of MK and Injustice games for the foreseeable future, with Injustice clearly being their experimentation heavy game. Its not gonna happen and its a bad fit. Not everything is about sales. VF5 was a great game at the wrong time, thats all. Sega is a company not tied to the IP because they have a lot of avenues to make games in (not the same for NRS, Capcom, SNK or Namco, btw, so when the time is right they'll bring it back on their own terms, not by giving it to Warner Brothers.

This is a great point. I was selling artwork at EVO and obviously every person walking the halls there is a fighting game fan, they were looking at my illustration of Guile vs Abel and some of them had a hard time recognizing Abel. Think about that Some of these guys are in their early twenties, so to them a game that came out ELEVEN years ago when they were 10 or 12 is some vintage thing they have barely heard of ... and thats Street Fighter IV! VF5 is TWO years older! There is SUCH a big audience that has never tried Virtua Fighter that would eat that shit up if it was brought back to relevance with a new entry.Thats a moot point. When VF5 came out the market was completely different, the FGC was completely different, streaming wasnt a thing, gighting games werent selling very well ... hell, under that math youre using, Street Fighter would have remained dead. Its a bad argument, dont buy into it.

Virtua Fighter 5 came out in 2006, for the PS3 The first iPhone came out a year later Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown came out in 2012, for the PS3. You know, the same year Avengers ONE came out. Since then, your best bet to play the game is to visit the arcade in Yakuza 6 VF5 in the arcades was INCREDIBLY ahead of its time with the concept of VF5 TV, SEGA wanted to turn the game into an esports spectacle before we even thought that was a viable thing and ... it failed because we werent ready for it. Heres what was going in the FGC circa 2006: Street Fighter was a DEAD franchise, Tekken 6 would not be out for a year, Soul Calibur 3 was a year old and wasnt received as well as SC2, DoA 4 revitalized the IP somewhat but didnt show lasting power and EVO was still ruled by Mahvel and 3rd Strike. The genre was in dire straits, it was just there with no real appeal to anybody outside the genre. To this day VF5 remains elegant, polished, animated to near perfection and, to my taste, actually displays the best romanticized version of "actual fighting" in a videogame. With todays focus on fighting games, streaming, televised tournaments, EVO ... man, the time is right for it to come back full force. SEGA has the complete capability to take on this task and make something truly special. Hell, think of the "guest" characters KAZUMA KIRYU RYO HAZUKI AKIHIKO SANADA Plus all the cool 3rd party characters that would be natural fits from Tekken or Street Fighter or hell, get some IP Man in there, fuck it, go get John Wick! A full fledges PS5 launch Virtua Fighter 6 could be the stuff of legends. The market is more than ready for it.

Thats what the internet says on Normal difficulty (40 to 60) which is what it took my wife to beat the game on Normal not finding consensus on hard other than peoples own opinions. At 100 I played at what I thought was a normal pace and was stomping pretty much everyone till the normal fight either way, even at 70 or even 60 hours. Playing that long at that dofficulty level in order to get 1/3rd of the story was not rewarding.

Its great and unique but no The game on “normal” is a breeze and basically a “story mode” The game on “Hard” is nowhere near as hard as previous games but it still makes it a 100 hour play through for ONE houses playthrough One playthrough, by the way, is too lacking in story. I beat the Blue Houses route and there was a significant amount of relevant plot missing, the game needed a more developed story or two routes instead of three. Expecting me to play another 100-80 hours in hard for the rest of the story or to play gameplay on easy mode is a lot to ask.

works for some games, not for others. Sekiro’s particular brand of game design would take considerable effort, I think. I also dont think it works well in the opposite direction, most games I enjoy are a drag to play in harder difficulties because its not well designed, they become cheap kills or cheating AI. I think a “cinematic option” is perfectly fine, hell I even like “easy” mode as free DLC six months after launch. Either way if FROMS next game has 5 options I wont care that much but I do have a preference and do have a strong opinion that polishing one experience is much better than using math (which you said yourself was not elegant and I agree but just to keep it brief)

Variable difficulty is a pretty arduous task that severely impacts dev time, game design, balancing and testing. Id much rather have FROM continue to polish one experience to the level of quality we expect than the alternative. More accesible options for players with handicaps are a must of course, but that goes for most games, especially ones with bigger budgets.

No. CT sits in the perfect/imperfect middle. Its too revered to be a quick remake like Mana or Saga games but has never sold enough to warrant a FF VII R level remake. If you had one of its core creators still at Square, they could push the balance one way or the other but all of the people involved have moved on since, leaving it in limbo as an IP. It will get remade in some fashion eventually but it will take a while. If Square does it for the prestige they would probably pick other games but if a young group of developers who grew up with Chrono want to remake it ... well they probably wanted to remake 7R more and thats what theyre doing for the next ten years.

Its too much. Instead you have to embrace the small goals, the things you can do right now. If you think about the macro too much it becomes impossible, but if you break it to small simple tasks like learn ONE kanji today or do TEN pushups or sketch for just 15 minutes then youll start getting out of the cycle.

I dont mean to quote these posts specifically, I just dont know how to "quote" usernames any other way. This will be long and rambly. This could be a future GDC lecture if polished but Im going to go off the cuff. Sorry in advance. Lets talk about criticism. I know a thing or two about it. My art school, The Joe Kubert School, was the kind of place that 100 students would join and only 25 would graduate and part of that was the grueling schedule but another was the completely crushing way everyone was encouraged to critique you without giving two shits about your feelings. Gotta weed out the weak and all. Right? I was pretty much a convert. Make this experience as hard as possible so that "the real world" seems easy by comparison. I thrived in that environment and gave as good as I got. I gained critical analytical skills that I use daily, 19 years later. I learned the "constructive" in "constructive criticism" over the years and smoothed my edges over time. After all, I'm a professional with a high skillset, a dope job and a great support group so this method of teaching worked, I was proof of it. However, I think a lot about the 75 people that dropped out. Im friends with them, theyre great artists but they work at Home Depot, their local grocery or just stay at home. Many got fulfilling jobs in other vocations. No shame at all but I always think about "How can I help them" "How did we fail them" At the end of the day, people are responsible for their own happiness so Im not here with arrogance saying it was "my job" to steer their careers but it has made me realize over the past decade that the hardcore "hey, here is a thesis on your illustration, this is constructive! dont be mad!" should NOT be the default approach. That kind of critique, while seemingly helpful in nature can become very masturbatory, in a way, a method to distribute how much about a subject matter and I found the perfect artwork to disseminate my analysis. For the average artist, especially a hobbyist, it is NOT a good feeling to post something you worked hard on and you get something that YOU feel is helpful but the artist will probably read it like this Maybe these artists would have become pros if we acknowledged that there are other ways to improve and make a living in the arts? Maybe somebody reacts better when given some room so they dont feel attacked all the time? Did you know that there arent a lot of female artists in games but there are TONS of female freelancers in anime and comic cons who are complete badasses and run their own businesses? Did you know they were told they werent tough enough in college or "couldn't hack it" when they joined the games industry? Theres a lot of art, from my peers, from my friends, from my family, etc, that I have ssssssssstrong opinions over. Over the years I have been THE critique person and what always ends up happening is that you become the asshole, the sergeant, the "tough love" guy ... and you start believing it. Artists will stop showing you their work because theyre tired of always getting a lecture, tired of always feeling like shit for daring to draw something for fun. Does a heavy deep dive into a piece of art help the artist? Maybe! Sometimes! However, it MUST be desired by the artist, it MUST be communicated because that artist is not under your rule. Im a professional artist, I have a strong foundation and I can dissect strong opinions, grab whats useful and ignore the rest, my ego is not tied to that at all. I've been through the fires and I thrived, but thats not how most artists are because most artists are amateurs who should not be expected to be able to deal with a giant paragraph out of nowhere. For instance, if Im a college art teacher, its my responsibility to learn each students quirks, to learn HOW they can learn better. At work, I'm actually in charge of handling the feedback we get from LucasFilm DIRECTLY to the artists, Im essentially "the bad news" guy so I have to take each artist into account and also mix in my OWN feelings about the art into account. Its fucking difficult! Heres how I recommend you do it in this forum You start with common ground. Make it a conversation. Dont barf advice at anyone, even starting with "this is what I like" feels contrived. If you see art online that makes you feel a certain way just reach out to the artist and ASK questions about it. How long did it take, are you trying some new stuff, is this a color palette youre trying to get better at, would you be open to some in-depth opinions, what are your art influences. People, and artists, react well to others being INVESTED in their output because then it feels like a relationship between equals instead of an imbalance of power between the critiquer and the artist, one which is often uninvited. Empathy goes a long way here. You can also offer critique slots, I did it last year and received a good response. "If you have something you want me to do a through critique on, Im available for "x" time" Once you build a certain level of trust then you can start dropping advice more often. Theres a handful of artists I have in a permanent open critique situation and I will send drawover and advice at anytime. Once you build some good faith and some common goals ("I want to get better at anatomy", "Id like to color the way you colored this piece") it can become really beneficial for both parties, I have learned a lot from teaching other people as it has allowed me to reconsider my process and basics. Thats what I mean when I say "help each other out!" get INVOLVED in each others work, ask questions, collaborate, cheer, elevate the conversation when both parties agree theres something to gain out of it and thats how we will build a lasting art community here on ERA Well, like I said, rambling and incoherent. Hopefully this resonated with someone out there. Im just a dude and I dont make the rules but I do think about this stuff a lot.

I used to have many other names just cause one name was taken in one place and not in others so I was Xavipants in some places and Jigglyxavi in others (lol) Eventually I noticed I was missing followers because they didnt realize Raging Spaniard on GAF and Xavipants on twitter was the same person so I just centralized everything under the RS brand and made sure people know my name is Xavi. You do this for long enough and eventually you get the confidence and recognition to user your name all the time, this happens in celebrity too with The Rock or The Sports Guy, who now fully operate under Dwayne Johnson or Bill Simmons. Hope this helps!

It expires in 2013, not next year. I have no idea if well renew or not but its been a good investment for both parties. Plenty of sales and BF2 (as of today), SWGoH and FO are doing well (and theres always whatever is next) Plus being able to grow the relationship with Lucas over the years has been great. Yeah, a few games were cancelled. It happens. Being so public about it painted the wrong picture, yall would panic if you knew how often every publisher out there cancels a game. Its the norm. Shipping is a miracle. Anyways, this thread gets remade every few months. FO is a good game and that should count for something.

Thread Diablo IV announced
Street Fighter 2 looked nothing like 1, 3 looked nothing like 2. Continuity is usually thrown around as an argument ender and its really not. New games are allowed to look different and find new ways to explore themes and expression (most of the D3 art team moved to Riot after its release, btw) I would prefer people not to take a tone that implies “real” fans prefer the darker look (or that theyre the majority) and people who dare to like something slightly different should screw themselves. A bunch of people who didnt like it were very vocal yes, but it doesnt make you any less of a Diablo fan for liking how 3 looked, we can have range and not be so tied to binary choices when it comes to this stuff.

Thread Diablo IV announced
Diablo 1 and 2 were plenty stylized with a lot of their art direction. Just cause you make things 80% black doesnt mean its realistic. Different teams come to different interpretations of similar concepts so thats what the team in charge of D3 decided a Diablo game could look like. Diablo 4 is made by a very different team, hell I have it on good authority it started as a Dark Souls clone anyways. It looks quite good, of course, but its a very safe approach. And yeah, wasnt meant to quote you, meant that as a general sentiment. Apologies.

Thread Opinion: Yoji Shinkawa is the greatest artist in gaming history
Greatest mecha artist? Up there One of the great art directors? For sure Dont think I can go higher than that, however. Nomura has him beat as far as range and responsibilities goes. Robh Ruppel’s work for Naughty Dog elevates him higher. Akiman’s breadth of work speaks for itself, Akihiko Yosh ... Many more Shinkawa is certainly up there and its odd to me that he gets more props from his illustrations than art direction, the latter being a much more difficult job. Id say hes certainly among the best within the MOST FAMOUS category of artists in videogames, but how many of you know Isamu Kamikokuryo, the AD for Final Famtasy X, XII, XIII and XV? Satoru Takizawa on Zelda? Yusuke Naora on the rest of the Final Fantasy series? We havent done a good job celebrating the artists who actually make these games, we focus too much on the lucky guy who gets to make the illustration. Shinkawa is THE MAN regardless so my opinion here is more macro, but it did remind me of the usual train of thought when it comes to these things.

Thread Links Awakening is full of unnecessarily obtuse and frustrating puzzles
Both things can be true, videogames these days do a lot of handholding so there is going to be a group of players who will struggle when they play a game that is more hands off Thats not a bad thing A game with a more old school approach that isn't panicked with the prospect of a new player getting lost and instead gives them other non-obvious clues in order to progress isnt bad game design necessarily but its NOT the OP's fault forGames are for everyone, whats easy for you its not always going to be easy for other players, especially now than more people are playing games than ever before. The way this thread has gotten contentious is a bit childish, to be honest (saying "hey, maybe youre approaching the game wrong" doesnt equal "lol fuk u noob get gud") if you want to be part of making this forum a better place for discussion then do it without calling people names just because they disagree about a very trifling aspect in a videogame

Thread The “having multiplayer is a waste of resources better spent on singleplayer” argument
It depends, sometimes its convenient PR spin, many times its the truth. Throwing people at features makes other features suffer, hiring more people doesnt actually solve that problem either, often it just causes more problems. Some teams will figure it out based on their resources, talent pool, competence, budget, etc and some teams wont. Too often, in this site and elsewhere, I see a call for universal solutions or universal processes and thats one of the things I would love for most of you to understand. There is no such thing as a universal solution for anything in game development just like there isn't a universal solution for most things in life. Different games, even in the same genre, have different needs and very different people with very different skills, budgets and processes. You cannot say "well this game did "x" so why cant they do it too" because there are sooo many variables involved that a reductive argument is (without malice) arguing in bad faith.

Palpatine fears Mace the most, so he devices a plot where Mace undergoes a very public trial and execution. The most powerful Jedi is thus executed and it sets the tone for the fall of the order, they become much less tolerant of any shades of grey and become more radicalized, this sets Anakins turn to the dark side in a much more natural way.

Thread Hideo Kojima explains how he can create games fast
Theres a lot of good stuff there and the other side of the spectrum is something that plagues other companies a lot, like EA. We sometimes (often) (all the time) get stuck or lag behind making decisions because people want to make the "right" decision so badly that we just wait until the last minute to make the decision, then rush to meet a deadline ... thus wasting a ton of valuable time. Theres also the flipside of this, people who, like Kojima, that have the decision making power and are not afraid to use it. The problem, though, is that 95% of the people with the decision making power Kojima has are 100% not as good as making games than Kojima is so they will make the worst possible decision at every turn, causing the game to fail, get cancelled, get people fired, etc, etc. Empowered game makers thinking theyre the next big thing but actually being terrible is a pretty big issue as well

I know you’re venting and hey, sure, Im not here to stop you but I’ll politely disagree on your TB comment, because its not a reskin. If Monster Hunter adds a new map with new encounters its not a reskin. We took the Geo TB extremely seriously and poured a ton of resources into it to make it the best piece of content in our game to date. I’ll also remind you that I mostly just make the art and am in no way an official spokesperson for the game. If there is something poignant I can help with (like you played with a cheater) cool I can help but otherwise I cant discuss release strategies and related content.I personally have no problems with it. We are lucky to have a good game with a lively audience that takes it seriously and demands a certain level of quality. These are good things. I have access to the data and dont find it demoralizing (then again, I dont get death threats like Carrie used to) I know things are going well (not just making money, other things too), plus I play the game every day and I know what the intent is behind these changes ... so when I see a segment of the fanbase have this kind of reaction I know where its coming from but I also have the benefit of a broader perspective.

They go that low is because the market keeps waiting for these games to show up for free or to have a 90% discount at some steam sale. Sounds great for the consumer but it also sounds like a great way to go broke. As an average, I personally never liked the move to $60, I liked $50. Knowing the amount of time, hardship, marketing and everything else that comes into making a game, I hate seeing developers continually have to justify their incredibly hard work to people who sometimes feel like they want their entertainment for free.

Nah, those games should have cost $60 as well. Just because some devs undercharge it doesnt mean you should devalue your product. Tangentially. I see this at trade shows all the time, artists devaluing their product more and more to stay competitive and it makes (some of) the audience take it for granted to the point they scoff at very fair prices.

Thread How strong was Bruce Lee?
It really has ended because holy shit at the amount of assumptions you have made with extremely little information. Of course I am not telling Bruce Lee's family to chill out, how on Earth do you even get to the place where thats the case? I say "people" as in "people in this thread" that much should be obvious. Lee is an icon and public figure who is as close to "legend" status as you can find in popular media in the last century so as far as that version of him goes, yes, there should be room for levity, just like there is room to glorify and exaggerate his many accomplishments (and I dont see too many people complain when that happens, again, note that when I say "people" I dont mean his family, also note how exhausting it would be to type all of that every time) Saying I am attacking you is extremely off base. You start the pleasantries by saying I am to be put on mute and then I dare to say youre making a leap and you think thats an "attack"? OK dude, if thats how you think conversations work. I already addressed your criticism. I am from Spain, trust me, I know how much of an asshole Columbus is, as well as Pizarro and Cortez. I know how stories get twisted and perversed, I also understand that movies are works of fiction. The solution is to educate people to not take movies as gospel. If anything, Bruce's legacy has benefited from this trend rather than be hurt by it. Also, another assumption on your part, I aint a victim of jack shit. Maybe you are tired of having this conversation with other people and youre starting to lump everyone into the same group. Have a good one.

Just trying to give you some perspective, if you want to dig deeper on conspiracy theories you go right ahead but Im here to tell you that this is the kind of stuff people that work in the game look at and go "can you believe this is how they think this works?" Fans do this all the time, theres a thing in the game they dont like and cook up a theory of why it happened, then they take that theory as fact, then the next thing they dont like happens and they built a theory on top of the previous unproven theory and give it a few years and its a giant pile of made up nonsense that the community has convinced itself is true. Good Tekken players make it look super easy, to the point that I cant tell who pulled off something difficult or impressive in a high level Tekken match! It can be VERY intimidating to learn when you start because somebody will just juggle you for 80% of your health and youll feel pretty powerless ... plus it looks silly, to be honest. SF is a lot easier to learn and its visually simpler to interpret. Basic blocks and punishes will go a long way and will make you feel good, its also easier to see where you went wrong when you fail. Theyre both so different that I would give each of them a week and see what clicks with you

Yeah, SFV at launch was good. Im talking DLC Yeah, I dont like most of those, especially Sakura. Her design felt very random and nonsensical, Guiles outfit change didnt do anything for me either. Cody's was good, Balrogs is just there, Sagats was good. Designs that tell you stuff about the character and why its changed and that feel like it belongs hit the note for me. Sakuras side job outfit doesnt.

These, they made a batch of them for every SF character ever Very uninspired, very non-Capcom, just bland all around. The designs in SFV vanilla I like the vast majority of, the DLC stuff has been very underwhelming for me outside of the outliers like Menat. I think having to design 3/4 outfits per character from the get-go really does the characters a disservice because the creativity is spread out and you dont get all of that effort into one concise design like the SFIII cast benefited from. All things being equal, I think its the weakest SF game in terms of character designs (outside of the original of course) It doesnt mean its bad, it just means that they dont have Akiman and company at their immediate disposal anymore. The character models are usually good and the animations remain great.

If I was going to compare the 3 main leagues, Italy is the most defense based, Premier League most offense and Spanish league the most balanced. In Soain typically Real or Barca win but thats not because the other teams suck, its just because theyre that good, they would dominate the other leagues too. Thread How were these iconic 3D assets made, and who made them? (FFVII, Xenogears, Ocarina and more)
Yeah thats pretty easy, modern games use the same technique nowadays too, You make everything in 3D, setup a render scene, render every frame from every angle and then you turn those renders into a 2D spritesheet. Not unlike Donkey Kong Country or, more recently, Clash of Clans. It can get pretty expensive based on the number of angles you want, minimum is 2 which then you flip but you can add more for smoother animations. Back then I dont think 3DS had a renderer so they probably needed to find a 3rd party solution to render their models, nowadays its mostly all integrated because every company bought every company To continue the spritesheet conversation, I have worked on games that rendered 3D into 2D sprites AND have done a couple of textureless projects. Heres some assets from a cancelled mobile game These are elemental variants for the enemies in our game. We had a barebones art team. One Art Director/Lead Artist/concept/environment artist (meee), one Animator/Renderer/Rigger guru (who went to Blizzard right after and now Niantic), one character modeler and one env modeler/vfx artist. So, SMALL ASS TEAM, in order to make the game we came up with a pipeline that only had two angles front and back) and no textures of any kind, it was all handled through shaders and straight up adding color to the models. This freed up the production pipeline enormously to the point we could even add a weapon mask to our character renders so we were able to have swappable weapons For environments, we leveraged our strengths. Im a pretty damn fast 2D artist and we had a at work. I had already figured out the tiling tech we were going to need and had the look of the game approved so I needed assets FAST so we came up with a pipeline that would work for everyone. Concept from me, he models the shit out of it without textures, makes a giant grayscale render with Ambient Occlusion baked in, I take that to Photoshop and paint it out. End result was pretty damn good so thats how we built the rest of the game, this is our ice level tile set and below some ingame screenshots showing how easy you can make diverse layouts with it. And thats just one way to do things, another example is the upcoming by Spryfox. The game has been in dev for a while and when I came in was struggling because of its 2D tileset. I was asked to come up with a 3D pipeline that would make the game resonate with potential publishers and ... shit, Im just one guy so, again, the last thing I wanted to do was texture every.single.thing in the game! Its a huge game, a goddamn MMO Roguelike SHMUP (and its awesome!) Another big problem was that big sprite cause big demands from performance. People dont know this but polygons are MUCH cheaper than textures, so if you want your game to perform better on low end device, take a look at your texture budget and find ways to optimize that shit. So, solutions, get rid of the sprites and have no textures! We were using Unity and Unity for PC has some sweet sweet solutions that can make your game look "artsy af on purpose" by doing the followingSo I used all those things (except DoP, we couldnt fit that one in) and I colored the assets in Maya by coloring their vertices. Now, you may or may not know what the fuck a vertex is. Its the "dot" on a 3D model, here And guess what you can do with that shit, you can PAINT IT The color originates at the vertex until it reaches the next one. Based on the number of vertices on a given model, the painting will look more or less detailed, if its too low poly gradients tend to look pretty bad. Anyways, to test the theory I made some mockups and prototypes. This is a mix of a 3D render with 2D on top Parallax test to see the "level up" from 2D to 3D and tiling tests to see if we could make a giant 3D world with a non crazy number of tiles (given the FOV in the game these models had to be pretty tall) SO, how does it look? Heres some comparison shots from the old to the new look. This was before I left two years ago, the game has made more visual strides since, btw! I was just there for 6 ish months to help set the new direction. And some cooler standalone shots, all the colors in the model are handled by painting the vertices The flat colors combine really well with the ambient light, colored fog, AO, traditional VFX etc to create what I think was a pretty unique look. Even now 2 years after I left the look has stayed mostly the same which is a good indication that it holds up

Thread How were these iconic 3D assets made, and who made them? (FFVII, Xenogears, Ocarina and more)
Goraud shading comes free since its textureless but it can also expose shitty models. Early 3D games really had no choice since textures were sooo expensive but the only reason they hold up now is by happy accident. Its not something you want to replicate unless you have a very specific idea in mind. For the color, you just give the default material a color and assign it to the mesh so Cloud in VII probably had his model be a bunch of separate meshes combined together ...and I say probably because that was made 10 years before I joined the industry so theres a lot of gaps there for me as well, some stuff carries over but a lot doesnt. Processes yes, well thats funny. You are referring to Tools, thats the term. Thing is, we ALL want tools to make things easier and faster but tools are typically the one thing that we can never get in the budget. Technical Artists are the people that make tools for you and every team, usually has ONE if theyre lucky. Its REALLY hard to sell the higher ups on giving time to make tools because its not sexy stuff, they see that time better spent in making the game not, you know, making tools to make the game making easier. Look up most games postmortems on gamasutra and you usually find the "wish we had more time for tools" paragraph. Why do you think PS3 games suddenly were super expensive to make and took forever? Because the tools necessary for high res 3D production were NOT available for a LONG time! Anything made for low poly PS2 days was useless and instead people used the same pipelines from the PS2 era and it nearly fucked everyone up, hell, Japan took a LONG time to recover, Squaresoft finally NOW has good production tools. To give you the example Im dealing with right now. In our game we use Unity, 2 years ago Unity did NOT have a way to make cinematics so you needed to download a Cinematics Tool from the assets tore. Ok, we get it but it doesnt like, work by default, you know? Its Open Source thankfully so we fuck with it and get it to work because mind you, the tool itself is still in development and gets updated every now and then. The tool itself has steep limitations such as no camera tracking so if I want the camera to circle a character I have to do it by hand instead of setting a track for the camera to circle around a designated target. That is too much work for our tools department to add to the app so IO make do in the meantime. 2 years later Unity adds their OWN cinematics tool AND it has camera tracking! The problem is ... we cant use it because ALL of our cinematics have been done in the other app and they wouldnt work with the new one AND it is lacking some features the old app DOES have so we are stuck in the middle waiting for the right time to incorporate the new one ... meaning that I will have to use BOTH in the future which ... kinda sucks! Good for job security but it doesnt exactly make life faster or easier. I have like 3 more paragraphs of content regarding the damn cinematics tool (because its also full of bugs that we can only fix one at a time because the tech guy also has other shit to do) but thats one example for you. Tools usually have to be made in-house from scratch and when you dont then you better hope you use an engine people make apps for that you can use and edit otherwise theres a ton of shit your game wont be able to do, even simple shit like "do you want your characters head to always turn and face the enemy they interact with" thats tools. Do you want a setup that removes 6 hours from rigging a character? Thats tools.

Thread How were these iconic 3D assets made, and who made them? (FFVII, Xenogears, Ocarina and more)
For anybody wondering about software Engines where by and large built internally, there were some 3rd party engines here and there like Torque but most Japanese dev houses would always build their own engines 3D production changed a lot very quickly, N64 era had SGI workstations but by PS2/Dreamcast days you just needed a beefy Pentium of some capacity. For 3D software the 4 big ones were 3D Studio Max, XSI, Lightwave and, later, Maya. XSI and Lightwave were HUGE in Japan, 3DS Max and Maya were constantly at each others throats with 3DS being older and thus giving developers a chance to build a lot of handy tools to make life easier but Maya being the new boy in town offered a lot of new features, specifically in animation. Blizzard, for instance, was traditionally a 3DS house because of their crazy expanded toolset they built, having only just recently switched to Maya for Overwatch. Another thing to consider is that in the earlier days, these programs didnt have much of a user interface AT ALL. Friends who learned 3D shortly before I did couldnt believe that our version of Maya had on screen controls, they had to model all their shit WITH NUMBERS. For industry veterans at the time the mid 90’s were an inflexion point were this entire generation of 2D artists had to either learn a brand new set of very difficult skills, move up in the corporate ladder or get the fuck out of the industry because pixel artists were seen as caveman that wouldn't be able to find work.

Things are not binary and dont extrapolate what I said and make it sound like I said something different. Updating your engine so it uses modern physics, modern shaders, better animation based solutions, different kind of lighting etc REQUIRES you to check every single old asset you are importing, thats unavoidable! Maybe the polycount needs to be changed, maybe the rigs are acting funky, maybe the textures dont work well with the new lights, maybe all new materials for every creature need to be made. Its a ton of fucking work that is oftentimes solved by just remaking the damn thing. The biggest disconnect between fans and developers is that fans are always shocked when something DOESNT work. Developers are shocked when something DOES work because 99% of the time everything breaks at the slightest hitch. There is a VERY HIGH chance that your favorite most polished game is one minor bug away from crashing all the way to hell but you just don't know it. This happens all the way from prototyping to ship

The game I work on is also mostly characters sitting around, over 170 of them and managing the workload associated with that many characters, their needs and potential updates is SO much work

Oh I have zero proof, Im just letting you know how things usually go when you go from a handheld game to a home console game. There are ways to retarget old animations and reuse some work so saying “from scratch” is perhaps too strong a word but just because you have a bunch of Maya files available from your last project doesnt mean you just use a couple of tools and bam, you’re done. It depends on the tech available, how compatible things are with your new engine, how does the old shit work with the new shit ... etc I will say this, many times it takes LESS time to make things from scratch than to retrofit old things to work Oh also, I like to think Im reliable but I can also be completely fucking wrong on this. Its not like all gamedevs agree in some council to have a consensus opinion. Even at the office we tend to yell at each other irl about this type of shit within departments. Its part of the fun.

Otherwise you get this You also need to understand what is the audience for your product, if your game is niche or specific to a fanbase you should veer in one direction, if youre trying to be a 10 million unit seller there are some concessions that usually need to get made. Also, dont fall for the PR too much. Kojima makes games for himself first and foremost. Him listening to fans the most was MGS5 and people like that game plenty

Anyways, I was planning to make a LTTP thread because it was SO good. It was not overly packed so frame skipping was at a minimum, it uses the available memory beautifully so bullshit enemy respawn is minimal, THE MUSIC, THE ART, BOTH EXCELLENT. The use of the hyper saturated palette mixed with the spotted blacks, consistent lighting direction throughout, the fearless use of music to give each stage such a vibrant, alive feeling .... playing it at the same time as Bloodstained made it obvious just how many missed opportunities are plaguing that game. Now Im starting Castlevania 3 (JPN version, heard it was better, especially the music) and it seems like the obvious evolution so Im pretty excited. The stained glass background early on is sublime. Never played SC4, Bloodlines or Rondo enough to make a call. the SFX in Bloodlines are REALLY annoying though. Dracula X is whatever and Id like to think we all know that.

I dont know, it bothers me as well but the proof is that these games sell and one of the reasons why is probably because they have more casual friendly mechanics. Max is a knowledgeable dude, but he doesnt have metrics related to sales and player experience, he doesnt sell games for a living so he cant make his expert opinion on fighting games be an expert opinion on what makes fighting games sell. He is in the elite group of players and thus has a built in preference in what he likes to see, so does Daigo. I welcome the conversation and I definitely like to see a top player perspective on these games but the moment they bring in the argument "it'll sell beter" they just have no idea if thats so or not, they have very limited information or experience to make those claims.

Being familiar with many cosplayers is tricky because cosplay being a “job” is basically a new thing. Before it was for the love of the characters but now you have legit ways to monetize your hobby and with money comes competition. So if you dont care about money or popularity. You’re fine. Its when you draw the line between wanting to be popular online and wanting to make some money. This happens in a lot of industries, like when you would literally go see Swordfish cause Halle Berry shows her boobs, or when runway models dont make as much money as strippers who dont make as much money as escorts. When you get in the business of making your appearance “the” business it opens a door to a lot of unpleasantness. I mean, it wasnt that long ago that it was considered highly comical to yell at a woman speaking in public to SHOW US UR TITS. Hell, the Simpsons did it.

Correction aside, references and roto are a really useful tool. Superb work there and probably where they wanted to get to when animating Elena.

Plenty of awesome people around, just hoping I can help out :)anytime!Yeah and like other people have said, this is not to imply randomnes is bad, plenty of games do random shit. However, in this case it was pretty damn blatant. As a whole, this game struggles a lot with its lore and way too many things that could be used as cool ways to expand its universe are just there "just because". Its a missed opportunity.
Published

(22392869)

Thread So what's the problem with Bloodstained's visuals?
I feel like I can contribute a bit here ... Its not a new opinion, however, its the most important factor. CONTINUITY IN ART DIRECTION From playing the game, its very obvious that it went through a lot of changes. That includes development houses, that includes game design, that includes budget, that includes engine improvements. All of these things have a cost and all of these things need to come together in some sort of way in order to ship a game. Symphony of the Night is not a "better" looking game but at the same time it IS a "better looking game. Its consistent, everything looks like t belong in the same universe with the same level of craft so, years later, when you think back on it you do so with a positive outlook because its was a consistently pleasant experience. It was a game made with experienced developers at the peak of their powers with a strong backing from their studio, that makes a difference. Why is there a random ass Japanese village, with caves, in the top left of a CASTLE? Because as it has been said in the past, this game was about traveling to different locations once, so the assets were made and then when it became a different game entirely well shit, you aint gonna scrape all that work, youre on a budget! It looks good! Make it fit somehow! This is how a LOT of this game was made, its shows and it makes the player go "oh, ok? thats weird, whatever" You get a ton of examples of this throughout the game, very early on when you are in the galleon it looks one way, then you step outside in the rain and the lighting, rendering and normal maps make it look like the Gears of War rain level, its a COMPLETE shift in art direction meaning that each scene was built by two different places, or they spent so much time on getting those shaders working that they just overdid it and never had the time to go back and tune it. Same thing happens with the more 2.5 D scenes like the tower, its pulling more polygons than the flatter scenes but it looks worse because you are not able to hide your budget as well in areas like that with a spiraling camera. This post, for instanceI guarantee the first screenshot is more expensive budget wise than the second. On the second shot you can bake lighting, fake everything with textures since theres minimal camera work and give the impression that its more expensive whereas the tower segment actually causes slowdown on a PS4pro which is crazy! However, it was built, they probably decided it was good enough to ship and that the camera movement was cool so they decided to focus on something else ... and they did, they decided to make the screens you see the most often as good as possible And I dont blame them, I would do the same! If you cant make the whole game look like this ... then at least get the important places done They also made the substantial last minute decision to overhaul their lighting and rendering, you've all seen the before and after video so no need to rehash it but that actually made the game even more inconsistent when it comes to visuals because it made some areas look great and then ones that didnt benefit from the overhaul were left behind. The KS nature of the game also has to leave room for a lot of concessions such as a place to fit all those damn portraits. It hurts the visuals and it hurts the level design (how many empty rooms with a portrait and a treasure chest?) I havent looked at the rewards in a bit but my impression when I saw giant cats and dog heads was "that must be a kickstarter reward or someshit) Those are elements that, once again, make a user stop thinking about the game experience and cause friction. Enemy design and implementation is also a mess, a lot of the stuff from Curse of the Moon makes its way here and they are NOT good fits, that Headless Knight from the beginning that looks like he belongs in Starcraft should NOT be anywhere near this game, same with a lot of others. Same thing with a lot of the bosses, they looked cool in Curse but here they seem very out of place and just jammed in forcefully. Look at a game like Dark Souls, or Persona, or BotW, or Hollow Knight or ... hell, Castlevania. Look at how everything there helps build the world and its lore, here they throw whatever the fuck they want to do under the "Demon" tab and hope it fits ... most of the time it doesnt, at all, then you look at the lore at it was hastily written, at best. At the end of the day you still had talented people doing good work. Slightly rushed work, the game desperately needs polish ... but good work regardless. What you are seeing here is the visual manifestation of development hell and what the costs of making a game with a lot of unconnected people for a lot of years without a lot of money looks like. Even the soundtrack suffers because you can tell she tried to make good music that could fit "generic space" not something really made to fit a consistently told narrative. Thats not how you get legendary Castlevania level music, its how you get something that looks close but doesnt quite "get there". Hopefully Iga's next game gets the consistent development this game desperately needed. He certainly deserves it as shipping this game with this level of quality is close to a miracle in terms of game development. Whenever Shenmue 3 ships and it disappoints everyone and people on ERA make threads like "what went wrong with Shemue 3?" you will be able to look at this game and be amazed they were able to pull it off.

I dont think Konami is interested, hence, you know, leaving I think once you have worked so hard to get the Bloodstained IP off the ground and shipping a very good game that went through a lot of hell in order to even get made (and its blatantly obvious when you play it, tons of examples there) then you stick with it. Cause it sucks :P Snark aside, Square doesnt see a lot of value in the franchise as a whole. Porting some of the older PS1 games is not trivial work (and in the case of, say, Vagrant Story, incredibly difficult) so unless they had plans to revitalize the IP (like they've done with Mana or SaGa) theres no reason to invest talent, time and money into it. Thread How Genshin Impact copying BOTW is so shameless and impressive at the same time
To expand on this a bit, what happens when you copy games, and Ive been in many scenarios where this happens (not EA, other places) you go with this mindset "well take this and this from BotW, but this from Dark Souls and the economy from Horizon" (those are just example names) You do that, copy copy copy, then you realize after 4 months it doesnt work quite well. How do you fix it? Then you start having doubts, do you keep going and hope it fixes itself or pivot in time to fix it? If you were making a copy/paste game, you were already a coward, so you pivot, of course, you always pivot. The new thing is a bit more BotW, scrap the Dark Souls Part and the economy is now based on what NieR did, because NieR just came out and everyone at work is playing it. Nevermind using your, you know, game designers to come up with any creative solutions, that shit aint proven! We must look at the market and do what works! It makes sense, after all, because you havent trained a team to be solution minded, you instead instruct them to copy other games when faced with a problem instead of trying to come up with a solution. This happens super often, nullifying hiring great talent when all you do is not use that talent and instead task them with borrowing shit from elsewhere. You will repeat this dance until the end of dev time. You will probably get cancelled along the way because your publisher will be shocked by the lack of progress when, yeah, no shit, we didnt work on the game for 2 years, we worked on 5 games that died after 3 months. If you are very lucky youll ship and who knows! Maybe its good? Its really random at that point and if it does well, nobody on the team will know why so dont bet on repeated success.

Thread Retro Studios tweets job listing for an Art Director for Metroid Prime 4
Okay, I saw enough replies on the first page that I feel like I need to explain some things to yall, Hiring happens at all times during the lifecycle of a project, before, during and after. Don't let fancy words like "art director" make you think they don't have talented art people taking on the role for now and making substantial progress, as a matter of fact AAA games have multiple ADs on a variety of roles. You have one AD for characters, one for technical art, one for animation, environments, one for the studio, even. At any point one can fill in the role of another until its time to fill the vacancy. I think a very common misconception is that without an AD you don't have an artstyle or youre not making art progress ... that is NOT necessarily the case! Art direction is usually set by the lead artists in the game and approved by studio heads, the AD is there to present work, champion it and make sure its consistent and delivered on time, its important work .... but those tasks can also be done by other people in the interim, think of it more like an Art Ambassador than anything else. It's an important title, to be sure, but also very misunderstood. Hiring one in the middle of a project is not (by default) a sign of trouble, it could mean somebody changed jobs, it could mean they increased the budget, it could mean the previous guy wanted to focus on a different area, it could mean they're trying to lessen the amount of work done by the leads, it could mean they need somebody else to represent the team in meetings so production can get more work done, etc, etc and ... yes, it could mean the previous guy sucked so they need a new one but that's the one everybody always jumps to and I'm just here to give you some more perspective than that. Making assumptions out of job openings is not a good look.

Depends on the artist, their culture, their experiences etc. For example, pretty much every white artist in America doesnt know how to draw and paint black people or black skin tones, its not hard to learn at all and people in the US interact with black people regularly ... yet they still draw the same, stereotypical archetype and call it a day. In Japan? You barely see or interact with black people so of course they are not aware that this conversation is a thing. Some will have I’ll intent and engage in colorism and some will just look at a piece in terms of value and go for something with lower contrast without full knowledge of how to paint dark skin because they never do it ... while being entirely unaware that its going to offend a lot of people in a different continent in a language they dont understand Some perspective from Robaato who deals with this stuff regularly Theres also a lot of artists fishing for RTs when it comes to this and they edit somebody elses work, its pretty blatant sometimes

Hell, all these 3DS shots are doctored marketing shots, not in-game shots, but people present them as fact. If the model and texture isnt hi res enough itll look terrible and or cause lighting issues, shader issues etc Since its a new feature it comes with its own problems that you wouldn't have accounted for when you built the old character model Not saying what issues in particular it may or may not have caused, just outlining some fairly common stuff. Every game is its own wonderful den of “I cant believe that one seemingly small thing is fucking us over right now” I worked on a game not long ago where getting floor tiles with tilable textures to work to barely shippable standards was months of work.

Totally fair, I just wanted to make sure rando’s who skim through posts saw a strongly worded post about the balance with other positions. As far as averages, those numbers seem iffy. Ive worked with engineers in Silicon Valley and they all make way over 100k while working in games. Me as a Sr Artist make a little over 100k (which is OK given the cost and 12 years exp) and when I was indy I made a bit more, actually. I know engs with my same exp or less make way more.

You are giving the game industry a lot more organizational credit than it deserves, haha. The fact that these models can be made to gigantic screen filling sizes implies some reworking got done. Regardless, all the new pokemon had to be made, which are a large amount. Re: legacy pokemon, If you think all they had to do was grab the Squirtle prefab from X and throw it into the new game on a new home console with a new engine with a new lighting and rendering system and expect it to work hunky dory thats just not a realistic scenario. I definitely believe you when it comes to games like Sun and Moon though. They do benefit from having access to all their previous work and Im sure things here and there get reused (library of high res textures etc) but the jump from portable to home console means everything gets a pass or a redo. For instance, in our game we still have to make a ton of things from scratch. Youd think theres a lot of work available but for many reasons its not really usable so we have to start over.

If you change the model you change the rig which means you have to reanimate. Thats the industry standard, no proof required unless they have some dope ass tech that allow them to make new character models for console spec and retain their legacy animations which ... doesnt seem like something youd want anyways since they probably made a bunch of new rigs for their new prod pipeline

Lately people like to throw the word “upscaled” as if its a dirty term and devs just hit the upscale button in a 3D program or something. Theyre still redoing and reanimating every Pokemon from scratch with higher fidelity ... thats a shit ton of work. There are reasons other games dont do it

Thread Platinum's cult of personality masks their abysmal content output
People still lurk and read, over 2k views on this thread alone. People tend to focus on the 1% of anything, it happens in every industry. Its alright though, I like to give a different perspective o at least its out there. Too many things about the industry get taken for granted.

Thread Platinum's cult of personality masks their abysmal content output
From a developer perspective their output is outstanding Its hard enough for a company to make ONE good game, why do you think companies keep making the same game over and over In 12 years, which is a VERY short time, they have redefined the action genre and the action RPG genre. They have developed their own IPs from scratch and shown great aptitude at working with other peoples IPs. Its VERY HARD to do ONE of those things well and they do BOTH! They have collaborated AND shipped great quality games with Kojima, Nintendo, Square, SEGA and others, the MSoft hiccup is relevant because its such an exception to their excellent publisher partnerships. 1st parties are knocking themselves over to have a chance at making a game with them. They take chances and make console specific games like W101 (a game EA could never make btw) and have proven to know how to budget their expertise and make smaller experiences like the Korra and Transformer games in order to pay the bills. Their games can be as big or as small as the budget allows and they always have a voice, are fun and SHIP, thats incredible. They are super flexible which is the #1 quality you need in a third party. They have STRONG creator voices AND they nurture and raise new developers, they also hire foreigners, a rarity for a Japanese dev, they experiment with artstyles and are unafraid to take crazy chances. They have barely over 200 employees Cmon dude

Im all about this subject but were going to use engineer pay as the example? You know they get paid up to twice as much as everyone else, right? Just sayin, everyone should get paid more but I dont see engineers taking a lot of side jobs cause their main job isnt paying enough. Artists (for instance) work just as hard and contribute just as much for way less money ... so just imagine how rough it is for QA Like, its a common industry joke to say “well you’re on an engineer salary so you pay for lunch” or just be having normal banter only for them to realize in shock that no, you cant afford a house and still put money in savings like they can and instead need to do freelance work or work conventions to even the scales a bit.

That would make a good followup to my concept project, just a visual study on what that all looks like, mmmNew talent that grew up with those games and now works at SE. Its one of the main reasons FF VIIR is even happening.

Thread Should a new Chrono game follow Trigger and ignore Cross?
Games dont tend to retcon their own sequels very much. I DONT like CC very much so it would be great for me if a potential sequel ignored it all together and just did something else. Just like with FF VII we now have a generation of developers who grew up with CT so a revival of some sort is not out of the question but it will probably never get the royal treatment that CT did As big a fan as I am, I would actually prefer is Square resumed the “Dream Project” mantra and sought to make a truly collaborative JRPG with their strongest competition, the Persona team. Now THAT would be something.

Thread Nintendo, please make retro series games in Links Awakening style
Each game has different needs, Nintendo is at their best when they create and taylor a new artstyle per individual game. Treating art direction like some sort of factory preset doesnt work (because of many reasons, one of them being the actual artists involved) and kind of depressing to work on, tbh

Thread Nintendo, please make retro series games in Links Awakening style
Its a bit of a dodgy term to use words like "simple" and "retro" when it comes to this art direction though. Its extremely complex and difficult to pull off in ways photorealism isnt, people get that confused all the time. Making characters look like toys or dioramas isnt retro ... hell, photorealism is actually retro, haha. Depending on the game, its camera needs, vfx needs, menus, number of players, etc, etc it may be a better idea to go with a more conventional look. Semantics aside, I know what you mean. Clean shapes, pleasant colors, etc ... but I get the impression that people think this takes and no, anything that looks good takes a giant effort, thats just how it is.

Thread Famitsu: Mega Evolutions and Z-moves have been removed from Pokémon Sword and Shield
Depends, no content is free. Has to be designed, produced, implemented, tested ... all that gets in the way of making new stuff for a new game. Lets Go was for Pokemon Go players, S&S is for people who dont like portable gaming and are curious about what a console game will be like. Focus on the new stuff and make that compelling instead of forcing legacy stuff in, thats generally a good idea.

More content doesnt equal better, design by substraction can be much more powerful than just adding everything from previous games. And yes, I would argue its important for Pokemon games to remain accessible to everyone. Its the first main gameon a home console so it needs to be a jumping point for a lot of players.
