Thread Stephen Totilo, Editor-in-Chief is leaving Kotaku
Many, many years ago—I think I was in college—I sent Totilo a PM on NeoGAF, asking him how he managed to work at MTV, because my longterm goal (at least at the time) had been to work at a mainstream publication and write about video games. He actually responded and was very kind, and then a few years later reached out and hired me to work at MTV. My career wouldn’t be nearly the same without his patience and guidance.

Thread Did anyone else take a break from gaming during college?
More or less. I actually *played* a fair number of games, but it was typically games I was reviewing for beer money and rent, which meant a lot of licensed crap. (During my college years, I set myself up as the “licensed person” at outlets like GameSpy, the person who would be happy to review the thing nobody else wanted. They would pay for the base review and a $50 bonus if the game was the same on other platforms, so reviewing the PS2 version meant you for like $150 or whatever, and then $50 for GameCube, $50 for Xbox, etc...)

I consider Mario 3D World to not only be one of the best 3D Mario games, but one of the best *Mario* games. It’ll get its due next year, finally. (I hope.) My rationale at the time was that having Papers Please on the overall list was important symbolism from a site like Giant Bomb.

Thread "There are no plans for more chapters" of the "Haunting of..." series, according to Mike Flanagan
I loved that s2 was such a narrative departure but it was clear a lot of audience expectations were boxing in the storytelling. The ghosts hiding around was pretty goofy this time. Just tell another supernatural story with a new name and give the writers more wiggleroom. Still, I’m glad they took the huge hype from s1 and told an exceptionally tender love story. It was a good swing.

Thread Vice's 'Tell Me Why' Review Is Problematic And Misses The Mark
I think Dia's review plainly speaks for itself, but I think the tension being wrestled with is pretty clear: in the search for better representation and creators not wanting to always indulge in trauma, aka the kind of stories we usually see about marginalized parts of society, do we risk reducing the truth of their identities? I think that's a pretty valid question. Ultimately, it'd carry less weight if Tell Me Why itself had to carry less weight by being one of the few big-budget games dealing with such themes.

Eh, it's nothing as blanket as that. Honestly, sometimes it's just PR being strategic, which is their...job? I've been at outlets where we'd later learn the reason we received a review copy later was because PR had listened to a podcast, deduced who was likely to do the review, guessed at the review score, translated that score into Metacritic, and then decided to send us a review copy at launch, rather than ahead of launch, so it would impact the "launch" Metacritic average later.

Thread Patrick Klepek Reveals He Only Made $65K at Giant Bomb in SF [Up: Klepek responds, see threadmarks]
A few things: 1) 65k wasn't great but it was workable money at the time that I lived in San Francisco. 2) I went into the job with open eyes. It was less money than I'd made at my previous employer, EGM, a place I famously had a bad experience with, and I was desperate to be happy at work again. I interviewed at a few different places at the time, while I waited to see if Giant Bomb could hire me, including GamePro, IGN, and some others that I've since forgotten. Giant Bomb made the most sense for me at the time, and I credit that experience with both making lifelong friends and boosting my platform and career. I don't regret any of it. You make all these kinds of trade-offs when going between jobs. 3) As I said in another tweet, I do not think there was some systemic attempt to depress my salary. I never asked for a raise at Giant Bomb until I had an offer letter from Kotaku, at which point CBS/Giant Bomb matched the offer. 4) It's also true that at no point was I offered a pay raise, which means there was no system at Whiskey Media or CBS in place to reward employees (or match cost of living) who continued to put in good work. That's bad, and punishes employees who don't go out of their way to demand a raise. That's a management issue, but also reliably in line with every other gaming media outlet at the time.

I've been talking with friends and family in Wisconsin, and there's basically *zero* guidance from local governments on what to do; it seems like nobody expected this order to come down. But now every restaurant and bar is racing to open up, and they're only going to be doing very superficial actions to stay safe, such as promising to "clean" more. No masks, limited social distancing that's mostly based on the honor system. It's a complete shit show. One bar I've frequented in Wisconsin posted on Facebook that you shouldn't come if you're sick and if you do get sick, the bar isn't responsible. Hooray!

I 100% believe that so long as some theaters are meaningfully open, this will arrive. It's convenient for Disney in a number of ways: fulfills an obligation to the director with having it theatrically released, while providing convenient cover for a poor box office and helping the public ignore a non-Disney take on X-Men, while they figure out their future plans. Then, watch it pop up on VOD soon after.

Apologies for snapping, the "grow up " remark was uncalled for and directed at people who were being bigger jerks. My bad. I just saw a narrative snowballing pretty quickly about the angle of that review, and didn't think it was fair! The person liked the game a lot! They admitted the condition of the world around them impacted their experience! Valve chose to release this game right now, given everything going on! It's fair to amass all of that, I think, and make it part of your broader critical assessment. And I say that as someone who reviewed the game and enjoyed the escapism.

Why? Games do not exist in a vacuum, they exist as moments of culture within wider society. There was a time while reviewing Alyx where, late in the night, it hit me that I needed to call my mother and tell her she was no longer allowed to see her grandchild. I cried into the VR headset, and had to give myself a moment of "What the fuck am I doing here?" before progressing forward. Reflecting that in your examination of the art makes perfect sense. You have plenty of extremely positive reviews from people who didn't have that hangup. Grow up.

This is such a strange thread. If you trust the parents, great. If you don't, don't. Not all parents are universal, and it would be understandable that you would say "yes" to some parents and "no" to others, based on your comfort level. Personally, I find it hard to imagine raising a child for six years and never reaching comfortability with a single set of parents to watch them while they play and sleep. I think people's reasonable concerns about "What message are you sending your kid?" is that if you have a deeply conservative perspective on this, it's probably true elsewhere.

You can start adding more games to the subscription. They're always going to have a chance to convince people to give it another shot when some high-end game comes along. (Granted, some of the reports about Destiny 2 and RDR2 running Xbox One X levels kind of hurts that, but it's also possible that gets better as things go along.)It's okay. But I'm also someone who doesn't give a shit about 4K, can deal with choppy frame rates, etc. Other people are going to be more annoyed.Stadia proves game streaming has a very viable future. Stadia itself? I dunno. I think Google keeps Stadia longterm as a streaming service, but am I confident they're actually going to fund a studio and ship a big, exclusive game? No, not really. I think if Valve added some kind of in-platform cloud streaming, that'd be huge. I think Microsoft has a big opportunity with Game Pass, too. On some level, I've been burnt out for a years now, but this work pays the bills and it brings me a measure of satisfaction. But more specifically, I hopped from Kotaku to VICE when my wife was only a few weeks from birthing my daughter. As a couple, we talked a lot about what the next few weeks, months, and years would look like, and that was part of my pitch to Austin and company: if you want me, it comes with the pre-condition that I will, with reasonable exceptions, only work from 9:30 to 5:30 every day. After that, I'm out. I've stuck to that. It means I don't have time to write a book, even though I've been given the chance to write one. It means I dropped streaming (for three years!) until recently, but tho now use subs to raise money for my kid's education. I'll stop streaming again eventually. It means my wife and I dropped our horror podcast, because we realized we'd rather spend that time relaxing on the couch next to one another. I gave up a lot to achieve meaningful work-life balance, a lot of stuff that basically involved ditching side project creative pursuits, but it's been worth it. 100%.

Corporate machines move slow and are often unpredictable, though, or else we'd have better addressed this in plan A, B, C, D, and E that fell through in the past. (One day I can tell those stories.) In the near future, we're expanding the circle of people who will appear on the podcast and bringing new voices to our freelance pool.Nothing specific, though feel free to make suggestions. There will be two regular podcasts a week, and the plan is to have Austin on both of them. Thread Nintendo Deleted a Very Popular ‘Mario Maker 2' Stage Without Explanation - Waypoint
Because that's all there is to talk about right now. I covered Mario Maker 1 extensively for years. Nintendo has a horrible, frustrating track record at opaque policies that server their own, internal needs without making it clear how others are supposed to play by the rules. This isn't just "kaizo" levels or something with "poop" in the title—we're talking thousands of levels purged from the online database without ANY explanation, no understanding of why Nintendo took the steps they did. When your policies punish children for a game pitched at all ages, your policies suck. They employ zero community managers to speak with people, so there is no way to appeal, communicate, or plead your case. Nintendo deserves every piece of criticism they get over this. They're repeating the exact same mistakes as last time.

Cycle repeats.

A lot of the people focused on the "poo" thing are missing the larger point of how Nintendo does this stuff all the time for things that make way less sense than you're trying to apply to this. I had people begging me to play their kids' levels in Mario Maker 1 because Nintendo would regularly delete stages that were "unplayed" without revealing what the metric was to keep a stage on there.

The problem of saying "poo" is on a list of words they deem unacceptable? This is community management 101. Even if you didn't want to say something public, the reason you have community ambassadors is to talk with the top-tier creators, explain the situation privately, and resolve the issue.

I think it's definitely possible there has been some overzealous moderation. We don't know Nintendo's process for moderation, which is a huge part of the tension with Mario Maker in general: Nintendo likes to keep their decision making quiet, but this is a game built around community. Different beast. As mentioned in my piece, a really fun level themed around the "storm Area 51" theme was taken down under similar objections, but with no more specifics.

NI actually don't have a problem with the amount/lack of Godzilla in the 2014 movie, but even if I grant that... Look at the bridge scene from that movie. There is a terror to that scene that isn't ANYWHERE in King of the Monsters, which is basically a post ID4-Emmerich movie. I say post ID4 because part of what makes ID4 work, besides the spectacular visuals, is how fun it is to root for all the different characters. People don't give that movie enough credit for that being such a huge part of why it holds up. King of the Monsters is really lacking that.

The story/characters were nonsense in this flick, which only bothered me because the monster stuff also wasn't that great. Part of what I loved about Godzilla 2014 was its majestic scope, how the camera treated Godzilla as something to be feared and respected, a true force of nature, a god among us. There's very little of that here, it's way more campy and traditional kaiju. Which is fine, I guess, but a huge source of my disappointment was the radical shift in tone, and the way the creatures suddenly just became toys to toss around a sandbox.

Part of Cloverfield's advantage, I think, is that the monster isn't well-defined until the end. With Godzilla/Mothra/etc, people are so desperate to see them. It's part of the inherent tension of franchises. Would the problems people had with Godzilla 2014 (a movie I loved, warts 'n all, and think holds up spectacularly) have been the same if it was a new monster, not Godzilla? Granted, the character development in Cloverfield was better, but I think the theory stands.

You think websites are doing this because people...aren't clicking? I don't think that puts into "clickbait" insomuch as you're serving the broader interests of the community who came to your website for, initially, video games, and now views you as a more general interest geek portal.

Yeah, that's why I left open the caveat that VR-focused places might be doing just fine, because they're catering explicitly to the audience. That wouldn't surprise me in the least. One thing I'll add is that writing stories you think will get an audience and writing stories that are just worth doing for the sake of doing them is a balance. I write, report, and publish all sorts of pieces that I think might do well, but end up not bubbling up for a billion unknown reasons. Sometimes you feel a story needs to be told, period. Traffic doesn't determine my salary or non-existent bonus, outside of general goals Waypoint is asked to hit as part of growth management within a company. (And which we manage to hit just fine without changing our general directive of writing stuff we're interested in!) But it's also true that you want to write things that people like? Are interested in? Want to talk about? It's a natural tendency for writer. I do agree with people pointing out how much better VR does on video, relative to print. But I also wonder how much of that is genuine interest in the technology/games versus seeing people act goofy on video.

I think that's maybe what Anthem wants to be, but it's not quite there yet. Maybe it will be. The frustrating part of the combo system is that when you understand how it works, it's pretty cool and a neat wrinkle to the combat system, but the game's tutorial never explains how it works, you only pickup on its existence from item descriptions, and you need to dig through a menu to find out a proper explanation (or look up a YouTube video). How does that happen for something so critical to high-level competent play?? Whether or not a reviewer should/shouldn't put all that together, the way Anthem doesn't even acknowledge one of its own combat systems is highly indicative of other design oversights.

Thread [Eurogamer] Titanfall 3 is NOT in development. Apex Legends is the main focus.
This is just a pet theory as someone who really wants Titanfall 3 and not supported by any reporting, but hear me out. Titanfall and Titanfall 2 are excellent games, the latter having a still-underrated campaign, but can you name any characters, or really describe the plot? They're a blur because they weren't really memorable. Apex feels like a soft reboot of the whole thing, even if it's still technically in the same timeline as the previous games. The tone is significantly shifted, and they've developed a slate of character ripe to have their backstories unpacked and revealed, Overwatch style, over the coming months/years. If people gravitate towards the game, if people fall for the characters, boy that sounds like an easy way to do something people have asked Blizzard to do with Overwatch: expensive campaign stuff that can be justified by pointing to the intense interest people have in the characters already.

I think people are swapping "engine" for "technology" without understanding the implications—the point of Jason's piece—but saying the tech driving their games seems to regularly undermine them, and has somehow become a meme that Bethesda itself jokes about, is spot on.

Doubtful that's how it would play out. Presuming Trump is actually planning this—I don't think he is, but let's game it out—the smarter strategy is to push an executive order forward, and wait for a challenge in the courts. Appeal it to the Supreme Court, and press your luck. They might lose, but I don't think that's assured.

Really liked the movie. Really loved the soundtrack. That said, wish the movie had found a less contrived way for Michael and Lorie to encounter one another. There's more effective version of the movie where Laurie realizes the source of her lifelong anxiety doesn't actually give a shit about her. He goes on a killing spree in Haddonfield and has no intention of ever finding her—he's just a vehicle for death. Her well-defended house turns out to be for nothing, and instead, she's forced to improvise, as she realizes she can't actually rest until she goes after him herself. I mean, fine. Contrivances are part of horror. I just think this would have better spoken to the movie's themes.

The way Lindelof polarizes folks always makes me laugh. The Leftovers is one of the greatest TV shows ever—full stop. Who knows. Maybe Marvel gives up a cameo, figuring most people can separate the two. (Conversely, Venom could enter the MCU in a few years and I'm not sure audiences would mind/remember. Easy to see that being seeded in Cosmic MCU.) Or if Venom only does okay, maybe Sony realizes becoming the bad guys that stole away Spider-Man from the MCU will taint their brand. She's largely scared of the Internet, but "apps" don't seem like the Internet and don't seem like "software" to her. That stuff is scary because you can fuck it up, presumably. Within the confines of the App Store, though, which is more than enough for her, she downloads all sorts of stuff. It's been really nice. This mostly seems like Epic wanting to get their 30%, knowing people will jump through hoops to play Fornite. They're probably right.

A quirk I've run into with my X. On my 7 Plus, running iOS 7, when I would AirPlay something--anything, regardless of app--it would show up in the 'media' portion of control center. That doesn't appear to be the case on the X, for some reason? This morning, for example, I'd been playing a Netflix movie for my kid to be distracted by in the morning, and when I AirPlay'd MSNBC to my Apple TV, the Netflix app was still the one in control of the 'media' part in control center, despite no longer being in control. Anyone else?
