I just finished the first series this week. I was never a fan of the character designs, but after seeing some of the mecha designs over the years I decided to finally watch it. It was entertaining but some of the twists and characterizations were just bullshit, especially in season 2. Trying go decide if it's worth watching the sequels now.

Thread "Our nephew's emotional & mental health improved dramatically when we banned Ninja from his life"
This kind of thing has been on my mind a lot recently, now that I have young kids who are starting to consume content on their own more and more, instead of just watching the shows I put on tv for them and such. I actually let my son use an old iPad to watch kids videos on Youtube when he was around two and just watching how he was interacting with it (barely able to finish videos, constantly jumping to the next thing that caught his attention, etc.) made me think it would have a negative impact on him so we took it away for a while. I recently gave it back to him and his little sister, but with the Youtube app removed. They mostly just play simple puzzle games on it. For the most part they are still active enough that I don't think it will affect them, but recently they have been watching YouTube in the mornings while they are getting ready for school. It's mostly been harmless stuff like random channels showing footage of people playing the Pokemon arcade card game that my eldest son is currently into. Or this one channel that makes videos with anpanaman dolls/toys and simple voiceovers, which my daughter loves to watch. However, I would still rather them watch pretty much anything else during that time to be honest....

Most of that is outside of battles and more a issue of battlelust or hindsight later. The bolded is a great example of exactly why Goku would be considered smarter in battles. He at least knows that anything which will push his stamina/condition beyond recovery should only be used as a last resort. See Kaioken x4 and SSJ3. Thread The most playable Japanese fighting game of the past 20 years is Garou: Mark of the Wolves, released 1999.
Yup. It was originally released on PS4/Vita with the normal delay netcode but when we decided to bring it to Steam we released it with the new CM rollback code and also updated the PS4/Vita builds with the new netcode. One of the big issues until recently was the lack of a community manager at SNK, which is something I have pushed for since I joined the company. We were recently able to hire one and that's one of the reasons why Garou rollback patch at least got a little bit of buzz when it hit.

Thread The most playable Japanese fighting game of the past 20 years is Garou: Mark of the Wolves, released 1999.
You got the facts just a bit off.... You are referring to the 97 GM beta test which Code Mystics did in response to the bad reviews on Steam, which happened around 2 years ago. The later releases such as V Special on Steam (along with update to PS4 version) and the new update to Garou are absolutely a result of our team reaching out to Code Mystics to get the work done and implement rollback. The original version of Garou on Steam wasn't even related to Code Mystics and we had to jump through some hoops just to even get permission to remove the previous version and replace it with the new codebase. It is great to see more of the community try to get awareness out about these releases, as it has been honestly frustrating seeing something like SamSho V Special release on Steam with rollback and most people just ignoring it....

Thread I'm a believer now. We don't need headphone jacks.
These discussions only make sense if there is some technical reason why you can't have both. This isn't the case, so removing the jack is a net negative. I probably won't upgrade from my S9 for a while now because I don't like the lack of options on the new phones. I generally use my bose wireless earphones now, but even just a couple of weeks ago I left the house in a hurry on a business trip and only realized once I got on my bullet train that I had grabbed my charging case, but had left my earphones outside of it like an idiot... Luckily my S9 still has a jack so I had the option of plugging in my wired headphones for the ride!

Not at the moment. The only first party IP I am currently interested in would be Forza Horizon. It really depends on what kind of new IPs and such their recent acquired studios end up revealing. I already have dozens of games which I got free through PS+ subs over the years that I would like to play, so even with it's great value I feel like I would never take advantage of a Game Pass free games as a result.

Oh, I don't really have an issue with the tech itself. I honestly thought making it a universal system like they did in GVS was the best option overall. edit: Also, didn't Tallgeese II have its own fastfall command that wasn't part of an actual cancel route? I specifically remember using that suit a lot because it was strong and allowed me to keep up with the Turn X units and such that kept bouncing around dodging my shots. lol

Yup, and it was one of the suits that had the fastfall cancel/boost dive tech as well. The Overdrive system was definitely the worst part of vanilla MB though, and was probably the first thing they cut when designing MBON. Heh.

Thread Gundam EXVS MaxiBoost On (MBON) announced for PS4, also coming to US/EU
Basically the only meaningful difference is that Versus got review bombed on Amazon by bitter JP gundam fans and everyone took their opinion as fact. It was still a great game and the most egregious issues were a handful of fan favorite suits missing, and a few universal system additions that pissed off hardcore fans. MB and to a lesser extent MBON was dominated by melee cancer suits that had specific movement options that other suits did not have. They basically added the 'Boost Dive' mechanic to GVS in order to homogenize that aspect, but it made the controls more unwieldy. In a similar vein they also added the universal Striker system so that every unit could choose an assist unit, which had always been limited to specific units in previous releases. I still personally think GVS was a better game than vanilla MB, but slightly worse than MBON. EXVS 2 is where it's really at nowadays though.

You read that wrong. Full Boost was one of the highs of the series, up there with Rengou vs Zaft II for me personally. I was referring to vanilla Maxi Boost which was the one that felt broken with long range units being absolutely outclassed thanks to the accuracy changes and speed changes on most guns. MBON fixed a lot of the issues with vanilla MB, but still had plenty of melee cancer suits. GVS basically fell between those two for me, as melee cancer was still ridiculous thanks to the Boost Dive but at least everyone could use those mobility options to balance it out.

Thread Stadia needs a plan B if it continues to not gain users
Google Fiber hasn't actually been canceled, just no further expansion beyond the current supported areas as far as I know. Also, the argument could be made that Stadia is also related to one of the core business ventures they are putting a focus on, with it basically going hand in hand with the google cloud platform. I understand that there are plenty of free services that have been canceled and such, but my question is directly addressing concerns of people who are basically saying they are afraid of Google taking away their digital content. I have asked in several threads of real world use cases where this happened to a user to the point where they are afraid of being burnt and no one has really given me an answer.... I just feel like it makes sense to compare Google's new digital content platform to their other digital content platform, not failed hardware projects like the Nexus Q or Google Fiber. Pointing to the only other service they manage that deals with selling digital content makes a lot more sense than comparing it to 90% of the products/tools listed on killedbygoogle. People would scoff at someone for assuming Microsoft is going to kill off Game Pass just because they discontinued the Zune, but that is basically the same kind of logic people are following for Google IMO.

I mean Google+ lasted for a while (7 years I believe?) and was never ever relevant at any time in its life cycle. That seems longer than I would have ever let it live if I was in charge. lol The truth is that it is mostly a meme that easy pickings for trolls who have probably never heard of half the services on killedbygoogle anyway. Is it not fair to point out that I can still play any digital content I have bought on Google Play on basically any modern device in response to worries about Stadia content being lost? Can you think of a service on Killedbygoogle that would have actually resulted in users losing paid digital content when it closed down?

Thread Stadia needs a plan B if it continues to not gain users
You mean to play the native linux build directly? No...just like you generally can't play Google Play games on non-android systems. Would have rather me have said Android in that first post? I used Google Play because my entire point was adressing the fear of losing a paid for product on a google operated gaming service. I feel like that is a lot more of a relevant comparison than most of the things listed as killed by google over the years. Anyway, maybe my original point was misconstrued or something but I was just pointing out that I don't see the same history of Google killing off any of their services that fall in the same scope as Stadia (i.e. a consumer facing service selling digital products). Just feels like there is some kind of weird pearl clutching about Google coming to steal the games you bought on Stadia, but when I ask about an actual real life scenario where this has happened in the past everyone goes quiet. Maybe it's just so obvious I am missing it, but the only thing I can think of is their VR venture.

Thread Stadia needs a plan B if it continues to not gain users
I would say that defining it as needing to be tied to a specific kind of hardware is probably an out-dated way of thinking about this. You could even argue that Stadia wouldn't count in that respect either! No matter how the semantics play out in your head, the truth is still that Google has been running one of the more successful gaming platforms/storefronts/online service providers/whatever you want to call it in the industry for more than a decade at this point. And yes, I do remember the days of the Android Market as well and actually helped developed apps for it. It also had an extremely rocky start and was a goddamn mess of a rollout that makes the Stadia launch look competent IMO.This is mostly because the idea of gaming platforms is changing very quickly. Think about it this way, if you jump to the official page of a new mobile game you heard about what are the two icons that will greet you? App Store and Google Play. But sure, catch me on the EVO Japan floor next week ;)

Everyone gets caught up on the fact that they didn't call it a beta, despite the fact the word 'founder' and 'early access' have been used to describe this phase of their rollout, both of which essentially mean the same thing. These takes always come off as concern trolling to me, especially considering very few of the KilledByGoogle services are ever consumer facing paid services. The only service I can think of that is in any way comparable to Stadia is probably their VR platform, Daydream. I have asked several times and never got an answer, but how many paid consumer facing services has Google actually killed off? Everyone seems scared they are going to lose their content, but I just don't see it. I still have every paid game or movie I have bought on Google Play. Pretty sure Microsoft has a much longer list of defunct gaming services, no matter how you look at it. Remember GFWL? What about UWP? Kinect? Not too mention probably a couple of dozen game studio closures over their history. Microsoft is definitely going in the right direction, and I am not saying they are going to suddenly cancel Game Pass, but it feels like the concerns around Google's history of killing projects are only very tangentially related to the current product they are offering.

Some of the tech is really incredible to experience, but there are still so many issues present that keep me skeptical about how the final product will shape up. I love the transparent nature of the development, but it also shows a very unfocused direction at the same time. I feel key systems like an actually useful interaction system for example should have been implemented years ago, buy the personal thought system they implemented was lackluster IMO. I also don't really like how opaque they are about their actual end goals. The roadmap is great for explaining top priority goals and other things farther out on the horizon, but a roadmap is nothing without a defined goal at the end. And even after so many years of development I have almost no idea what they would even consider a full 1.0 release of Star Citizen. Is it still the core base of 100 systems that was originally promised? Maybe I have missed something there though. I don't follow the news as closely as others and just login periodically to fly my ship and attempt to check out the new content (and usually fail to get far) or otherwise I just hear snippets of news from my brother who is fairly active in the community and eagerly awaiting the ability to fly his Carrack after buying it like 5 years ago. If I remember my details correctly, it was a full stock portfolio complete with a Merrill Lynch accountant to look it over that was worth about ~150k We actually left our hometown for the same university, even getting an apartment together and around that time he turned 18 and basically lost all self control. He ended up blowing almost all of it on crown royale, weed, and his Silvia converted 240sx. He managed to party so hard he lost his scholarship as well, and ended up having to drop out and move back in with his parents to work retail at a Vans outlet store. This is what confounds me really, because at this point this is the only real outcome I can see even in a best case scenario, no matter how good their map generation tech ends up being. I guess it depends on how dense the systems are, but what are the people who paid $900+ for a colony ship going to do in such a small persistent world? Wouldn't that run it's course within like a week no matter how dense they are? At this point it's tough to even find undiscovered water worlds in the Elite Dangerous 'bubble' which is probably like..10,000+ systems.

Like I said it is a matter of perspective. Taken in a vacuum, there is absolutely a lot of stuff in the game with some very innovative tech implemented already with even more coming in the roadmap. However if you are measuring the current content up against the original pitch back in 2012 (which is still promised on the official site), it still seems like we are a decade away from completing that content! And it just looks even worse when you remember that was originally promised on a budget of 8 million (iirc) and we are now at 250 million! I agree with you that the project isn't a complete scam, but I am also not convinced that they will ever reach the end goal just by looking at the current state. They have to be burning through cash at an incredible rate with the amount of studios they have as well.

My main worry is regarding the overall scope of things they are promising and how it will even match up with some of the ships they are selling. Again, I can't use the service here so I am a bit out of the loop but that is my understanding. I am not sure if Google will deliver true Stadia optimized experiences before MS upgrades their hardware, but one of the basic pillars of Stadia is also incremental upgrades, so it's not too hard to believe they may try to disrupt the console gen mid cycle with the newest top of the line PC parts. As far as something catching my eye? If the service were here in Japan I would be on immediately for RDR2. If the entire point of this thread is to point at their current lineups and laugh at Google, is it not fair to point out how the hardware specs at this point also compare?

You basically covered it. Just add in the fact that it's a hot take by someone who obviously has no idea how different the work required is for supporting a brand new streaming platform, against just streaming already made Xbox One games on Xbox hardware in the cloud. I do wonder what hardware the xcloud is running. Are you going to get 4k Xbox One X quality at least? I haven't seen that confirmed anywhere.

While I understand this issue, it really doesn't make sense for the hardware agnostic approach they are taking. If you have to add an asterisk saying you can play the games locally, only if you have a PC that supports each games minimum specs, then I feel like you muddy the messaging even more than it already is thanks to the misconception of what game 'streaming' means compared to other media. As someone else not in their current launch territory, it does suck having to wait though!

Thread Stadia launch dev: Game makers are worried “Google is just going to cancel it” thinks such concerns are "kind of silly" (dev responds, see threadmark)
Yes, that's the entire point. A lot of launches are rushed and have issues. For some recent examples, the fact that the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Switch both had prevalent hardware defects has did not stop them from being successful platforms. The point I was making, which you seem to have missed, is that Android Market was a much bigger mess than Stadia is shaping up to be, and it has grown into a billion dollar business (now known as Google Play), and the one that is most directly comparable to Stadia over the entirety of Google's services.

It just seems like concern trolling to me. Everyone is clutching their pearls about Google taking their paid purchases away, but I can't think of a single service where that happened. The most high profile services which they have killed are usually free services or redundant services. Unless someone is going to point out how they lost all of their purchases on Google Play, then it's just nonsense. There is a good chance I am missing something, but I can't think of a Google service with paid purchases which has been shut down.Which projects have they killed with the same opportunity cost as canceling Stadia, namely recurring revenue in the billions of dollars?

I have yet to see a single reasoned argument explaining why Google would kill Stadia. Most of the stuff on that killedbygoogle site are obviously engineer pet projects that were probably faded out as teams moved on. Alphabet wasn't going to pull in gaming market level billions of dollars of revenue from that one RSS feed reader that everyone loved. Google really only has one service that is directly comparable to Stadia, and it was also an incredibly rushed and messy launch known as the Android Market back in 2012(?). The argument would only make sense if they canceled that one before it started pulling in billions of dollars of revenue a year as Google Play.

Yeah, this is my stance as well. Just doesn't look very good IMO. The style can look great if it is done right. The whole 'well the 80s looked bad and same-y too' defense is tried as hell too. Sure, they were fairly cliche designs but that doesn't make the current trend any better. Cherry picking examples about how bad things were back then is the opposite of what the designers should be doing. Do the leg work to show how your style works with the new show instead of trying to frame the conversation about the old shows failings. Luckily, I was never a big fan of the show as a kid anyway so nothing lost for me. I'll stick with my Voltron remake ;)

Yup, this is basically my take as well. I don't really get jealous of the single people around me going out though. At least in my social circles, I would honestly say that I know a lot more depressed single people around me than I do married couples. Either that or the married couples are Oscar award level actors! I had plenty of fun up until I had a kid in my late 20s, so I guess that factors into it as well. My wife is also amazing and I could easily go out binge drinking every weekend without issue, but the fact is that I just don't want to 99% of the time. Watching my son get hype over the newest Pokemon episode or seeing my daughter playing little pretend games she made up herself is 10000x more fulfilling than watching friends sing drunk karaoke or whatever. Edit: I should also state that I was REALLY lucky and both of our kids are super healthy, never suffered from colic, were sound sleepers from birth, and are generally well-behaved. My daughter has been a bit of a handful recently, but not too bad. My only real regret is we haven't done as good of a job raising them bilingual as we honestly could have. You responded to my comment that I felt marvel movies do not overlap in style THAT (emphasis is important, I agree there is some obvious overlap) much thanks to movies like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Ragnarok with the comment that they are the same thing, just with a different paint job. Is that 'paint job' not something that is created through the production process? I just took umbrage with it because it felt like an oversimplification of an important part of the production process in the medium in order to hand wave away any positive aspects that the films hold. Also, the entire thread is about the production process according to the title and comments from Ken Loach, no? So, I am not even sure where you are going with this. Let's just agree to disagree.Something being a common figure of speech is NEVER and I mean NEVER a good argument to dismiss someone's issues with said figure of speech. Yeah, we are just going to have to agree to disagree as I said before. No one unironically using the 'lazy devs' argument is actually critiquing the development process because they literally don't have the knowledge to do so in 99.9% of cases. That's the entire issue with that rhetoric. Those people are critiquing the end product by treating the devs as some monolith that should do better by their own uneducated opinion. I did not even directly correlate the two and said it was bordering on that sort of rhetoric, which I will stand by. I don't have many issues with his more nuanced takes even if I don't agree with them, but that first comment was extremely condescending in my opinion.

We will just have to agree to disagree. Basically everything you say would be comparable to using 'lazy devs' to critique a game's quality, and that is banned on this forum for a reason because it does not lead to any sort of meaningful discussion and comes from a place of ignorance on how much work goes into every step of the production process. Also, the original comment as especially condescending because it was "They slightly change the paint over them," No, that is absolutely not it. Does Thor:Ragnarok reuse the exact same set design from a previous movie with nothing but a new filter put on top? Because that would be the equivalent of "just slightly changing the paint job and that's it." It's just a wrong statement that lacks any sort of nuance worth discussing.

That comment was in response to me saying that I felt like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Ragnarok felt varied to me within the MCU. Saying that those are just the same thing, but with a different coat of paint is absolutely being reductionist to the point of lazy devs complaints. And you are completely off-base on what the equivalent would be. We are talking about dev(s) not a single game producer, or a single scenario writer which is what you are now trying to equate it to in the movie industry. It is a comment that is used to bunch every creative together into an over simplified critique. Complaining about 'studio' movies having no variation without any real concrete examples and just based on the fact that they use a common narrative structure (which is absolutely not unique to MCU movies) feels exactly the same as calling GameFreak lazy devs because they re-use assets in their games. The problem is you have not done a very good job proving this point, especially in relation to the 2000s. Do you really feel like movies such as Hancock, I am Legend, 300, and Talledega Nights are somehow different from MCU titles when it comes to narrative structure and the production process? In what ways exactly? And why do you have such an issue with the fact that the MCU aims to have a studio driven, cohesive vision? Do you not feel like executive producers such as Kevin Feige are pushing forward their own creative vision, albeit maybe in a way different than how Coppola or Scorsese did in previous decades?Okay, let's just back this up a bit. I brought up Black Panther in an earlier post actually, as an example of what I felt was a varied experience inside the MCU. You disagreed with that and claimed it was just the same movie, with a different coat of paint. So, I went on to explain that using your own reasoning about thematic concepts and narrative structure I felt like Black Panther was treading new ground thanks to the diaspora angle. You then started moving goal posts about how "Well, yes but it didn't do a good enough job" which was never my original point. Honestly, for someone who complains about this conversation going in circles I kind of wish you would have just said "Ah yes, I don't agree with Captain Marvel and Ragnarok, but Black Panther is very different from the other Marvel movies."

It's really not that hard, and lies more in the cultural impact of the movie rather than its overall quality. Can you point to another mainstream blockbuster movie that has covered the theme of African Diaspora? I legitimately think that Coogler pulling in a billion with black super-hero flick that delivered a plot with the central theme of African Diaspora to mainstream audiences is going to do more for cinema in the long run than Scorsese making another Italian gangster movie. They have concept artists, cinematographers, costume designers, choreographers, screenwriters, editors, actors, stunt doubles, producers, directors, musicians, composers, etc. etc. etc. No one can actually give a solid argument on which fronts the MCU movies are somehow a lesser endeavor and 'not cinema' and just fall back on hyperbolic comments about it being 'manufactured', an 'assembly line', 'just a paint job', etc. Those are not valid complaints and are just nebulous and vapid comments that shed no actual knowledge about the production process and what specific issues they may or may not have with them.

You generalized the entirety of the MCU as just having a slight paint job change, and do not even mention the word narrative. If you want to have a nuanced discussion, please avoid hyperbole or prepare to get called out. Are most of those movies which you listed really that different when it comes to narrative structure and or original ideas? You think 300, Talledega Nights, and Hancock are examples of blockbuster movies with unique narrative structure and originality? Really? I just don't see it at all, and would see something like Thor 1 as a true Shakespearean tragedy to be more unique than a smattering of Will Ferrell and Judd Apatow movies.... Just to go even further, you take issue with my claim that Black Panther is different from the other MCU movies. So let's go with the narrative structure/plot aspect that you are using as your baseline. Would you agree that one of the central themes of the movie is African Diaspora? Can you point out a single movie on your list that covers that topic, which I think you would agree is new thematic ground for hollywood movies, no?

I just think you have a slightly rose tinted view of the 2000s especially. That era seems to have been just as Studio driven in the high budget / top grossing lists as now, except that it was a more even mix of various studios, such as WB and Sony with Dark Knight and the Spider-man series respectively. I also think trying to lay the blame on the lack of creative mid-budget films at MCU's feet to be completely off base, as that feels like a result of streaming services gaining popularity.I am not trying to hold up Black Panther as some perfect example of high art in cinema. It has its issues and I personally feel like it went to soft on the overall colonialism critiques. However, I was just pointing out that I feel like it was thematically different than other Marvel movies. You tried to just hand-wave that away and say it doesn't feel varied compared to the other MCU movies. I don't agree with that take at all. I also feel like Thor 1, Iron Man 1, Ragnarok, and Winter Soldier all feel like very different productions where you can see the lead creatives touches in obvious ways. I also don't really agree that the cohesive nature of the MCU is a negative. In fact I feel like it is an unparalleled achievement in an industry that can barely pull off a competent trilogy most of the time.Nah, I absolutely don't agree with this take. I understand that he has a more nuanced point in general, but saying "They slightly change the paint over them, that's it." is condescending and is absolutely devaluing all of the work that goes into these productions. If someone told me that the latest Samurai Shodown was nothing more than a new paint job, I would also take offense. They might be technically right, but they are also using language that belittles all of the actual hard work that goes into the production process. Do people really think that the stylistic differences between something like The Winter Soldier and Thor Ragnarok are that easily accomplished? Being iterative is not in itself a negative and is not something exclusive to the MCU. Are we really going to pretend that Scorsese is reinventing the wheel with The Irishman and not just iterating on a formula that he has worked with for decades?

Thread What year has been the lowest point of your life?
Hmmm... Would have to go all the way back to when I was 6 (1991) and my brother was 'kidnapped'. I put that in quotes because while technically true I later found it was a lot more complicated as our mother lost custody of him to his father (technically he is a half-brother- same mother, different dads)by not showing up in court and his dad just showed up one day and took him. I believe my mother was also in the wrong for moving out of state lines with him as they were supposed to be sharing custody. However, I was only 6 at the time and he literally went missing after I sent him out to a friend's house to collect toys for a big G.I. Joe battle. Everything is pretty fuzzy but we were basically in the dark for about a week thinking he was completely missing, when it turns out his father had just taken him back to Kentucky. The entire experience fucked me up something bad and I was stuck in counseling for a couple of years.

Well, I would say that neither of the comments have actually given any real explanation to what exactly makes Marvel moves a lesser form of the medium compared to other blockbusters. The Fast & The Furious movies seem like theme park rides to me as well. Jurassic Park is a movie about an actual theme park. lol To be clear, I do agree with him that they are basically going for that type of 'theme park' experience but I just don't agree that we shouldn't consider it 'cinema' as it is obviously successful in setting out to create a specific emotional response from the audience.

Except the fact that none of those analogies apply at all to this situation... so I am just gonna assume this is a troll. It sounds like you are claiming that the production of Marvel movies is the equivalent of a toddler banging away on a keyboard in a toy store. Even Scorsese commented that he still considers them well made, and the reality is that no matter how many people on the internet say they are 'made by a factory', the fact remains that they are the work of hundreds--sometimes thousands-- of creators in differing fields.

We aren't talking about popularity or accessibility here, but whether something is considered 'cinema' or 'high art'. That is the discussion at hand, no? I was not alive when Scorsese and Coppala were young adults, but from what I understand comics were never seen as a 'serious' medium by the more established industries such as cinema, especially during the prime years of these two directors. A lot of that criticism came from the fact that as you say above, they were basically the go-to media for pulp fiction and not what most would consider legitimate literature. I also don't understand where all these generous takes are coming from. What concrete analysis did he give to explain his issues with how they are made? Scorsese's comment at least had some sense of nuance where he likened them to a theme park experience, but Coppola comes out and says that is generous and starts legit name-calling. Haha.

Part of me wonders if these opinions are also coming from a place of bias against comic books in general. Considering their age, and the fact that they were the golden boys of what had been established as THE medium for high art entertainment during a time when comic books were mostly ridiculed and even demonized by the more established creative mediums it seems like a possibility. I could definitely be wrong there, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a tinge of bias as a result of their age in this respect. Also, didn't Coppola actually have some good things to say about Black Panther? I swear there was a story where Coogler showed him an early screening and he was positive or something....

My go-to theater here in Osaka is the Screen 1 @ Toho Umeda. It has an extra large screen and Dolby Atmos. While the urban legend that combos in SF2 were a bug is not really true, it is true that they basically stumbled upon that depth by accident as well. Our recent Code Mystics releases (KOF 97 and SamSho V Special) on Steam and PS4 being the only real examples for SNK. They have almost everything that a FGC user could want. - Steam version - rollback netcode - sprite graphics - affordable price And last time I looked they both only have around 100-300 reviews on steam. I don't deal with sales numbers now that I am on the dev side, but that doesn't really seem like a runaway success we can use to convince the decision makers. Despite Code Mystics going in and adding rollback code in response to negative reviews and feedback, KOF 97 wasn't even able to climb back up to a positive review status.

It is just a pet peeve of mine, especially as a person who put actual work into those projects. There is a lot of talk in the FGC about raising each other up, but when it comes to stuff like this the conversation always turns to the bad points and just outright bashing. Sajam's recent video about netcode spends a lot more time complaining about the negative aspects, when I feel like it would be more effective to try to 'raise up' these bright spots in the industry. That's a pretty narrow-minded view of the genre, so I don't even know what to say. If I met a movie buff who claimed to be an enthusiast but refused to watch anything 'before their time' I would probably make a note to never listen to their opinion on movies. MK11 is successful but there is a lot going on there besides just rollback implementation. They probably have the largest development AND marketing budget in the entire genre and their production values and marketing power are probably the real key to their success sales-wise. Even just looking at Steam achievement data, only 12% of people seem to have completed the basic online achievements. (that data might be wonky because the game is blocked here, but it seems to at least show me achievement data) I still think good netcode is important, but there isn't much data out there to suggest it's a huge draw for the casual audiences and therefore leads to millions of units of sales.Yes, thank you! If Steam got to the place it is with absolutely no effort by just existing as that poster was implying, why did those services by much larger companies not take off? There is cross pollination, but I feel like 90% of the merch and products I see are more 'generic' spidey for lack of a better term. Lots of stuff based on the Disney animation shows especially. And I have kids who love spider-man and actively look for this stuff as well. There is obviously going to be some merch to go along with theatrical runs (I have a Homecoming Spider-man figure sitting on my desk lol), but it is dwarfed by the rest of the spider-man merchandise that is sold 365 days a year non-stop. I am also not an expert on these types of deals, but I am guessing that any merch that is explicitly from Sony endeavors probably does result in them getting a piece of the revenue as they still own the IP in that case and Disney/Marvel are just helping with the production. The post I was quoting made it sound like they were expecting Disney to give up a portion of ALL their merch revenue to Sony, and I just don't see how that could be justified.

Yeah, I feel like this take is kind of missing the point that FFVII was obviously going for a more grey depiction of morality in comparison to a lot of contemporary JRPGs. You literally start the game off as a gruff merc who is willing to do a terrorist bombing in the planet's largest city just for some quick cash. All the saving the world stuff comes later. Multiple party members have a past where they willingly and happily engaged and worked with Shinra. Shinra didn't become evil overnight. The game even tells you in Rocket Town that they basically started off as a weapons manufacturer before discovering how profitable Mako energy was and only later rebranded themselves as a power company. The Turks still do some fucked up stuff, but I think at this point most of the groups life experiences told them that they were just another cog in the corrupt and all-powerful corporate machine that is Shinra. Not to mention the fact that they know first hand that it's the plot of the board members, as they overheard the entire plan from the air ducts. Honestly, I think the original FMV does a great job showcasing that as well, with the final shot of President Shinra watching the destruction while listening to some classical music. Heh.

They may have made a ton of money off Venom and Spiderverse, but their top grossing movie EVER as a studio is now Far From Home. In most cases they have been incredibly inconsistent and their top grossing movies are thanks to the Spider-Man IP, which is always getting an unseen boost thanks to Marvel and Disney merchandising. How much Raimi Spider-Man merchandise have you actually seen in the wild? Normal 'comics' Spider-man on the other hand? The idea that Sony should also get some piece of the merchandising revenue is just unhinged from reality. I can see why people would want it altered, but I kinda hope they keep their characterizations from the original game. To me the various more light-hearted interactions you get in the original game helped to paint them as a more neutral evil alignment in the larger scope of things and I kinda feel like that was the point of all those scenes. They do seem more conflicted as the game progresses, unless I am remembering things wrong. I would hate to lose that scene in Goganga where they are gossiping over which party member they like. I could see them doing something similar to the Avalanche bench warmers, and giving them more story and background in the remake to make them seem more like sympathetic villains who are stuck in a system with no easy way out. An easy way out would be to definitely just paint them as a simple cog in the Sector 7 plate drop, i.e. expecting that everyone was evacuated only to later find out they were not. If I remember correctly, Tseng was not included in the meeting where they decide to drop the plate. It's just their boss, Heidegger, who is privy to the full plan.

Maybe. The visuals will probably be more visceral this time, but I feel like PS1 graphics meant that a lot of players also filled in the gaps. They were still pretty blatant with the imagery, including a close-up on a toddler watching tv (I think?) right before the plate came down. I think the party's slight indifference to them is just a result of them knowing that they aren't the real problem, and are just following orders, along with the fact that they aren't really a threat compared to Sephiroth for most of the story. That is also fairly relateable for most of the cast (Cloud, Barrett, Cid, Vincent, Cait Sith) as they also had times in their past where they were willing allies to Shinra.

It's very hard to go wrong with any city in Japan, but Osaka is really where a lot of the roots of overall Japanese cuisine are which is why I feel like it should get more international acclaim! Two of my favorite areas are the Tenroku shopping street (full station name is a mouthful--Tenjinbashi-suji rokuchome) which has a lot of street food and B-tier gourmet spots. I have had cheap sushi there that still rivals some of the best michelin star kaiseki in Tokyo, hands down. And the Shin-sekai area with its abundance of Kushi-katsu places is easily one of my favorite spots to eat in the country. I always take visitors there.I have heard Sapporo is amazing, and everything I know about it is that it has a very different food culture to this day when compared to Honshu. It's still the one destination inside the country I haven't visited... The Kanto region just lacks that distinct culture in comparison. Monjayaki vs.Okonomiyaki is not even a fair fight...Yeah, the high rise kaiseki places in Tokyo are great and all but the true strength of Japan is just that the average quality in any city is just outrageously good. Yeah, Tokyo is still absolutely one of the best foodie cities in the world. I had some of the best kaiseki and shabu shabu in my life at the Park Hyatt during TGS. Osaka's scene and cuisine is definitely underrated though. The fact that it is considered the food capital of Japan is unwavering fact and has been so for hundreds of years. I am not a Japanese historian, just play one on the internet, but my understanding is that Osaka's central location as a port town between the primary historical capitals, Kyoto and Edo, meant it always had a booming food industry no matter the period. Most of the core concepts of Japanese cuisine, like 'umami' and the usage of dashi originated from Kansai cuisine. You are definitely right about Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki! Although, the best Hiroshima style I have personally had was in Takarazuka! I believe the chef was trained in Hiroshima.

Thread Top to bottom, does SPIDERMAN or BATMAN have the better Rogues Gallery?
That's subjective for the most part, and I enjoyed the main quests, combat, traversal, and story a ton more in Spider-Man. Anyone who thinks that those games are 'worlds apart' in any way are just not thinking about it objectively. They are both amazing games with very few flaws, mostly issues that are unavoidable due to said scope of such games. It just happens that Arkham Asylum's biggest flaw (IMHO of course) is that atrocious final fight that ends the entire game on a downer. The final boss fight is just a very huge piece of a game's experience, and I would say that Spider-Man probably had the best final act of any open world game released. Obviously that is subjective, but at least I can't think of any open world game that stuck the landing as well as Spider-Man did. And it has a lot more to do with the topic at hand as it's a comparison of adaptations of two of the heros' main villains. The post I quoted seemed to be trying to extrapolate that the Batman games are 'vastly' superior to the Spider-Man games and that is a result of his amazing rogues gallery. I am just pointing out a case of where that isn't true in the case of the final boss fights of each modern game franchise's first entry. You can't get a more fair comparison than that! And I personally think that all of the Spider-Man boss fights were better than the ones in Asylum, outside of the Scarecrow hallucination fight.

Not really true if you know where to look. I have a pretty damn good Jamaican jerk place like 5 min bike ride from my house for example, and I don't really live in any of the central shopping/restaurant districts. Tokyo will always have more of everything than Osaka because it's a city of 8~ million vs. 2~ million... but there are very few blind spots that I can think of.

Nah, there is a reason why Osaka has been considered the gourmet center of the entire country for like hundreds of years. I tend to actually eat better when I am in Tokyo because I take clients out and such (just did the 3 star Kozue during last TGS trip), but I still think that the pure abundance of amazing B gourmet places in Osaka balances out the crazy number of Michelin stars Tokyo has, while actually being affordable if you aren't pulling six figures.

Thread What cities have the most overrated and underrated food scenes?
I just mean in total, which would include everything from street food, B level gorumet, to top class Michelin rated places. Tokyo definitely has the edge when it comes to 3 star Michelin restaurants, but Osaka still has a crazy nice selection of top tier restaurants and is still in the Top #5 worldwide when it comes to star count iirc. And I would easily argue that the number of amazing B gourmet places in Osaka would give it the win over Tokyo.

My brain is still trying to process this. German cuisine was alright in my experience and I didn't really like most of the stuff I had in England outside of the Indian places I went to, but Spanish cuisine is absolutely some of the best in the world. I know we are all about smashing the patriarchy and such nowadays, but even if I don't agree that anyone adamantly against having kids should force themselves to have them, the part about getting married isn't bad advice. The only people who would believe that are arm chair analysts who have no actual experience in marketing or branding. They have also probably not thought critically about why Tony Stark is still Iron Man, Peter Parker is still Spider-Man etc. Ditching a main character like that creates a rift immediately that weakens the entire image they are selling. While the older fans are definitely not a focus for the IP, it absolutely is a plus to still have the same characters so that on some level the father buying their son a new pokemon lunchbox can resonate with them and possibly be even more generous! And thats not even getting into the idea that Satoshi/Ash comes as a package with Pikachu, easily a top 5 iconic character in the world. Would you also ditch Pikachi? Would you bring a new character but just have him use a pikachu as well? Then what is the point? Yeah, I could understand if they are just stating their own reasons for losing interest in the series or whatever, but it usually seems to come from the angle of someone thinking that TPC is missing out on some potential audience or something. I feel like if you are second-guessing the decisions behind a multi-billion dollar IP that has never shown any real signs of floundering after decades in the spotlight, you should really step back and ask yourself if you have the design/business/marketing/whatever acumen to actually make those kinds of statements!

That is one way of thinking. The other is to not rock the boat and keep the branding/merchandise the same so that all the various generations still have points that they all resonate with. The people who get bitter over minor narrative points in one of the most consistent and beautifully produced anime series to ever grace the industry should be locked in a room and forced to watch the recent Berserk and Saint Seiya CG anime series non stop until they realize just how good they have it.

Some of the comparisons in here really have me scratching my head. One of the biggest selling points of the entire MCU was the fact that it was a consistent universe with almost every movie in the franchise directly affecting other MCU properties and movies. The idea that people would go into Avengers Infinity War and get angry that it wasn't some self-contained story seems to completely miss one of the biggest selling points of the MCU. Even the original Avengers movie basically expected you to have seen the various origin movies to get the most out of the plot.

I still don't really agree with the idea that the game is bloated in comparison to other open world games. The collectible with the highest number was the backpacks, with like 50-60 iirc? Arkham games have like 400+ (!!!!!!!) Riddler Trophies to hunt down, with Knight even locking a boss fight behind them. That is the definition of bloat to me, not Spider-Man which may be one of the leanest open world games in terms of number of collectibles. I can understand the issues with crimes being a bit repetitive, but I also think its a bit unrealistic to expect them to focus and build that out any further over other aspects of the game. I also don't really agree with the assessment of the combat, as I think it did one of the best jobs capturing the feeling of the target super-hero when compared to similar games. That Wolverine Origins game might come close!

Yeah, I think my point went over their head a bit and they thought I was just trying to make a dig about their overall naming process. While there is a lot of silliness in their titles, in a lot of cases they actually try to put too much information in the title/subtitle and make it a mess (like KH II.8). Final Fantasy VII Remake is one of the few times where they decided to completely leave out pertinent info in the title/subtitle. Whether that pertinent info can actually be gleaned from the titles their own internal logic produces is another matter of course.

I mean if you split the game into very big chunks based on unique locals, it is roughly 1/5 of the main story beats without even including any of the hefty side content in as well, so I don't think it is as egregious a claim as you think. Especially since some of that side content does add to the overall world-building etc. like with the Wutai area. Saying it is 1/10 of the overall experience/story might be a of an exaggeration, but I don't think it will be that far off in the end. And this isn't even opening up the can of worms where they have hinted that they want to also include the FFVII Compilation story beats in the remake as well!

Kingdom Hearts III is a full new entry in the series, and not a remake/compilation/spin-off/remaster etc. so it has very little bearing on the discussion at hand as we are not talking about Final Fantasy XVI but a remake of a previous game. ALSO, If we are talking about the actual last release in the series it is NOT Kingdom Hearts III as they have already released a bundle called Kingdom Hearts: All-In-One-Package that explains exactly what it is with a nice little subtitle. You aren't wrong, but I think a lot of people gloss over just how unprecedented the 3/11 quake was. Just for reference, there was only one other earthquake of that magnitude (2004 Indian Ocean) during the entirety of its operation. The design was definitely antiquated, but most of the blame lies on Tepco for being a corrupt piece of shit corporation that ignored warnings from experts that the seawall was not high enough, etc. A lot of the disaster could have possibly been mitigated had they actually listened to advice over the years.

I personally much prefer to live in Osaka as it's just a little bit less crowded. There isn'tmuch more to do in Tokyo to be honest, outside of limited events and concerts I guess. Citation Needed! I was literally assistant producer on a 1st party Microsoft Game Studios that actually shipped. I don't think I have been going around spreading unnecessary negativity about MS, and I don't think pointing out that the Xbox name/brand is obviously steeped in that sort of late 90s/early 00s edgy marketing would even count...as it's just so damn obvious!Yup, I talked about this in one of the SNK discords, but I really find the FGCs reaction to Stadia to be the most baffling one. I don't pretend to be a network engineer and can only have a laymens understanding of how netcode and such works, but one of the most positively received innovations in that community is rollback based netcode. Which to someone like me with little to no experience in coding makes me think of the famous quote: "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" because it seems like pure wizardry to me in application. And even if Stadia and rollback/GGPO don't share that many aspects on the pure technical implementation side of things(tho I feel like there has to be some overlap there!), they are most assuredly comparable when you think of practical applications and the general philosophies behind the tech. There was a good article by the Bungie developers recently where they explained that their tests with PvP had them optimistic that it could mean an actual improvement in online multiplayer lag. This was mostly because the biggest hurdle for netplay is the last mile of internet, in the sense that most data centers and such around the world have the infrastructure necessary for online play, but everything falls apart when the data needs to travel that last mile to Florida Man's crappy copper based internet. An implementation like Stadia means that you are bringing more and more of the computing/rendering/etc. load to the server, which will in the end positively offset against the added input lag, as you really only need to send that and video data over the most precarious and inconsistent part of the network.

One look at basically any of their designs, packaging, etc. from the OG Xbox and you should be able to FEEL that 00s edginess design sense. If you think marketing execs gave the greenlight on that name because it was named after an API most general users only know from frustrating errors popping up then I have a bridge to sell you! Sorta. Not for graphic reasons, but more because I am a bit of an audiophile and love playing with my 5.1. Combine that with the fact that my nicest headphones at the moment are bluetooth, which isn't supported by Switch, and I only really play handheld when I am on international flights.

I feel like the 'gameplay isn't why we play Sakura Taisen' stance is missing the point. Maybe it's just me but a mediocre action system will detract from the experience more than a mediocre SRPG system in my eyes. Not to mention that the SRPG system fits the kinda chill nature of the game as well.

If you have never been to Japan, I wouldn't really recommend it over the hundreds of other things you could do in or around Tokyo. It's not that different from other trade shows. I guess the professional cosplay is better than most other shows? The main reason to go would be to buy some of the merch they sell, but I wouldn't even recommend that on public days as it's crowded and the good stuff tends to sell out. It's fairly out of the way too as its not in Tokyo proper, but out in Chiba.

Thread Kinda crazy that Batman has the best adaptation in every medium
Honestly, only the animated series would take it for me. And then Spiderverse destroys every other superhero animated film as well so might as well be a draw.Nah, I think Spider-Man still edges them out or is at least very close to City. For me the spiderman gadgets are way more fun to use in combat and traversal doesn't get old as fast. I would give Bats the edge in stealth sections and puzzles but that's about it. If you think Hulk Joker is a better way to end a game than the spectacle that was the Doc Ock fight, I legitimately wouldn't know what to say. That was a terrible way to end an otherwise amazing game. Also hot take: Spectacular Spider-Man would have surpassed Batman TAS if those cowards had not canceled it.

Thread [Kotaku] The Video Game Industry Can't Go On Like This
I can only really comment on the U.S. and Japan thanks to personal experience. I don't consider myself informed enough to speak to UK studios like Rockstar North, as even the reporting from Kotaku painted a varied picture. It's very hard to actually paint a thorough picture of a company employing thousands of people from anonymous reporting. I know people who have worked there (not R* North specifically) and hated it and people who have worked there and loved it. A lot of the bigger studios (like EA where the person I quoted works) have great work-life balance nowadays and seem to be constantly improving, and I feel like most horror stories I hear nowadays are from indie start-ups and such to be honest. Japan does have cultural issues with work/life balance, but the truth is that the labor laws are actually fairly robust as long as you know your rights. Like mandated paternity leave which is something most of my U.S. colleagues in the gaming industry can barely even imagine (outside of companies like EA which have made real strides to improve that aspect of the industry). Those protections do fall apart when you are a temp worker, but that is not very common in most of the gaming companies I worked for. We don't have the robust support that employees at a company like EA enjoy nowadays, but at the very least if we feel like we are being mistreated it is possible to consult with a labor board and have your rights backed up, with very little risk of getting fired. Obviously, things aren't that cut and dry as you could still be punished by getting moved into a shittier position (Konami style), but I will take that over being let known I am being fired in a 200 person bcc mail or however the hell they do those mass cullings in the US.

Even in the comics does Mysterio ever have some grand end game plan? I swear he mostly just pulls heists and tries to frame Spider-Man most of the time. Which is in itself a very bad idea instead of just framing some random security guard who doesn't have super strength, super agility, and a genius level intellect. And then when that blows up he comes back just to specifically get revenge against spidey. Maybe I am forgetting some of his better story arcs (doubtful as I recently went back and read a bunch of old issues via MU) but I feel like the FFH plan might be one of his most well thought out ones. Think of the merchandising revenue for the worlds greatest hero alone!

I am sure most people want to believe I am being worked to the point of death, but I go home on time basically every day so I can spend time with my kids. Probably just a result of Sony needing that boost a lot more. Spider-Man has already been such a staple of merchandising over the years, I wonder how much of a boost the Sony movies give those sales in real terms. Spidey has been the highest grossing comic book character for literal decades and by a large margin iirc. And of course a ton of that was because of merchandising over the years.

Yeah, it's just the reality where the negative stories are the ones to pick up steam, and the good stories are never told because as someone else said, the emotional incentive isn't as strong when things are positive. Most of the discussion about Valve just seems so off from what I have heard from staff working there, or what I have seen when visiting their offices over the years. I always had the impression that the core Steam team was always fairly understaffed, but most discussion on the internet would have you believe 90% of the company is just sitting there tweaking store algorithms in order to better steal money from indie developers. To be honest, a dozen layoffs in a company over ~400 people is barely newsworthy. It was kind of ridiculous how many S rank bugs persisted post-launch. 2) Interesting loot at the end game. The emotional beats at the end really landed perfectly and cemented itself as one of the best Spidey stories ever. I feel like they took the character and really made it their own for the game, which is a true accomplishment for such a celebrated character. For live action, it really is Holland and it's not even close. Toby did a great job as well, but I just personally like the younger Holland take on the character. He also just wins out for being able to interact with other Marvel heroes. To me Spidey is and has always been THE team-up character, and I love to see his interactions with MCU Cap and Iron Man.

Absolutely horrible news. RIP to the victims and hope for a fast recovery for the injured. On the topic of the mentally ill in Japan....I think this is what it comes down to. Higher population density is the big factor here, along with the prevalence of public transit. Even if you live in the Japanese countryside, you are still going to be in close proximity to plenty of people. Definitely not the same as the U.S. countryside, say rural Kentucky, where your nearest neighbor can be a 10 min. drive away. Even small countryside towns in Japan are more densely populated than some suburbs in the U.S. And yeah, I also don't understand the stigma about it being hard to get mental health help inside Japan. At the very least there is no shortage of metal health clinics. They seem to be basically everywhere in my experience. Not as prevalent as dentists or hair stylists, but not too far behind!

I feel like the only one where this even makes any sense would be Amazing Spider-Man, but still wouldn't recommend it. I tried to do it for both X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man over the last few years but ended up skipping a lot of the 90s stuff for both of them. Even then I ended up reading waaaay too much crap. That era of Uncanny X-Men with Marrow and Maggot on the team had to be the lowest point. And that is including a re-read of the damn Clone Saga, which single-handedly drove me away from comics for a long while as a kid.

Yeah, this is my biggest worry as well. Sure, I can personally enjoy both CC and AC as well, but I have to turn off my brain for most of it. While this is true, their most recent flagship FF game had an absolute mess of a narrative and was objectively bad in how its story was told. So obviously it takes a lot more than 'any paid professional writer'. I would also agree with everyone else that Midgar's impact was so strong because despite being fairly short a LOT of stuff happens in that span of time. I would like to see a little more detail or backstory for characters, but I really do think that if they try to pad it out to 60 hours then it could very easily reduce the impact in comparison to the original.

I don't work on the outsource projects with DE directly, but going by the release dates they were probably working on the 40th anniversary collection to coincide with....our 40th anniversary! So again....these things take time, especially if you want the care and detail on the same level you get with a Digital Eclipse release. It's not just a ROM dump and call it a day project. I think a lot of people just forget that they bought a lot of goodwill with both developers and consumers in the early 00s by being the only company who didn't completely jump ship from the PC ecosystem. I think one of the worst takes I have seen was a fairly recent topic trying to argue that EGS was going to force Valve to start making I am guessing most of the people following that line of thought don't realize that UNREAL used to be more than just an engine....That's why I said I was joking! Not for developers who are strong in developing countries (SNK being one) where the local payment service transaction fees would be passed onto the consumer, which would drive away purchases. If Epic ends up catching up on features and local payment services that will be a different story, but that is a big if IMO. Let's be honest here. 99% of the people complaining about the 30% cut have absolutely no idea what kind of tools and features Steamworks offers to developers. Does the EGS even have a robust multiplayer matchmaking API at this point? I was told that it did not yet, but I am no longer a bizdev guy so I don't take part in those conversations really anymore.

It's not. I have more experience here than basically anyone on this forum TBH. I have both worked with Valve/Steam for close to a decade and also spent 5 years running an independent digital store (playism) Valve offers an absolute great value at their 30% cut because compared to other digital stores it is not a goddamn headache to release a game and actually has easy to access data and marketing features. I agree that the detail of the world is great, but that honestly rarely plays out in the story missions because they are so strict in their designs. There was at least one mission in Valentine where I just tried to run behind a couple of buildings as soon as I started getting shot and got a fail state in 10 seconds flat. I honestly can't remember if it was a leaving mission area message or a NPC getting shot. I also had to me except with Uncle. And the failstates are just one issue. Everything about the missions was just too strict. For a game that is supposed to be hyper realistiic it really liked strict yellow circles for every mission throughout the entire journey. It had some of the worst waypoint design I have ever seen to be honest. It was always annoying when the game cover system (which never worked very well for me) would place me in the wrong position. I honestly just wish there were less shootouts. The combat was not fun or very interesting thanks to the input lag and the fact that all the detail in the world really added nothing to the missions outside of some nice physics and animations. I also find the defense that the designers were going for a slow, methodical game silly when a good portion of the main story missions turn into endless shootouts with body counts in the dozens using a gunslinger aimbot with time slow powers. The game seems at odds with its own philosophy to me. The game was best when it slow and methodical, but everything fell apart for me when it came to shootouts because I found the lock-on combat boring but turning it off made the game almost unplayable.

I agree with him to be honest. The theater is the ultimate movie experience unless you get a shit audience or something. Streaming and such has convenience on its side, but everything else is just objectively better. Is that really true though? I am a bit out of touch as I only use UBER and such when I am on business trips to the U.S. now, but I almost feel like this is just another example of people becoming more insular in general. Maybe just me over-thinking things. I don't want to make any assumptions, but your definition of anywhere probably means anywhere your city and maybe a neighboring city? Once I had a car and a part-time job to pay for gas/insurance as a 16 yr old, it opened up so much. I regularly traveled to events outside of my home state with friends (usually music and car events), and also traveled all around my state checking out college campuses and such when I was still choosing schools. Even later in university, having a car just opened up so much for me that it's kind of interesting thinking back on it now. One of the first real dates I had with my wife was thanks to the fact that I had wheels and volunteered to drive her down to Disney World to meet up with some other international students. The rest is history! Sure, we probably could have taken a Greyhound for cheaper! But it's not the same! I can see moving away from driving as you get older and more settled, especially if you are able to live in a place with decent public transit, but having a car was more than just a means of transportation for me as a HS/college kid in Florida.

I can't imagine this thought process in the U.S., outside of maybe New York or other cities with useful public transit. In other countries and cities I wouldn't find it as surprising. I have now lived in Osaka for over 10 years, and never driven a car once during that entire time. We may buy one in the next few years, which will mean I need to get a JP drivers license, but it will really be more of a luxury than a convenience. For me, getting a car was one of the best things ever in HS and I absolutely was in a hurry to get one. I actually bought my first car when I was 15 (1986 Toyota MR2 w/ a cracked block and rust spots) and spent 6 months working on it and getting it running and doing minor body work. I was into cars more than most people (hence the username), but the real advantage was the amount of freedom it opened up once I was 16. I guess that is kind of a moot point with services like Uber/Lyft out there now.

AC games tend to have a separate plotline which runs parallel that ties together a lot of the themes in the game, and this time it was extremely weak and felt forced. The game is extremely clear in the starting objectives though. You even get a breakdown of each target type with numbers. They are complaining about the fact that the mission parameters change in the second half of quite a few missions, but I have never really understood that complaint. It makes sense for the type of game they are going for. Ever heard the classic quote "No plan survives contact with the enemy."? If your aim is to create a game with a military theme, and you make sure that the parameters never change and everything goes exactly as planned for more than like a few of the missions, then you failed at your job as a designer. Full stop. This isn't even that out of character for an Ace Combat game IMO. I feel like a lot of the complaints I read about the game in the OT and other places were misreading the title of the game as "Weekend Flyer Simulation 2019" and not ACE COMBAT. The mission structure and design should be there to challenge and even frustrate you because the entire point is to make you feel like an ace pilot that has been through hell and came out on top.

Sorry, spent the last day or so traveling for PAX and such! Most of this stuff will probably be known after PAX players dive into it more so I can shed some light here. All of the mechanics you listed are in. Just Defense negates chip and builds meter. And the game doesn't have absolute block so you can just defend multiple hits I believe if you're good. The dodge you are seeing is L+M so R1 default on pad. Qcf L+M is the parry move. Same command is blade catch while unarmed. You get a tiny bit of invincibility on back dash, but not to the extent of FF. Not sure on frame data but it's not something I depend on. Haha.Sorry, we still aren't showing off a lot of the other characters in depth yet. There was still some space between the copier and the corner of the room. There was a small table near it that could be used for breaks. I was finishing my lunch when the guy came crawling out of a hobbit sized space between the copier and the wall and surprised the eff out of me. Thread Why does Spider-Man canonically lack natural web shooters?
I don't think it is about 'realism' as much as it is about in universe logic. Sure there are weak spots, but overall they are trying to keep things logical. Spider-man doesn't have SUPER strength. He has the proportional strength of a spider. He also has their reflexes and sense of balance. The entire is idea is that he has the abilities of a spider when they are scaled up to and directly applied to the human physiology. Generally speaking, they don't go out of their way to give him abilities that scale beyond that. The biggest leap is probably the Spider-sense, but even it has basis as spiders can sense vibrations through their hairs. My point is that none of his powers completely outclass what a normal spider can do. I can see Lee, Ditko, etc. back in the day talking about this and deciding that going out of their way to come up with biological silk glands and spinnerets in spots that aren't based on normal spider physiology would be bending the rules they set out a bit too much.

That’s taking it too far and would ruin the characterization they were aiming for. He’s a poverty superhero. Where is he supposed to get the materials for a Starktech level suit? The genius of the web shooters isn’t the actual device themselves. Hell you can buy one that shoots silly string for like ten bucks. It’s the high level chemistry he pulled off to make the actual fluid. I would say that this way also emphasizes his genius in that he is able to make up for this ‘blind spot’ in his power set with his own adaptability.

I only played Destiny 2 for the PC launch, but did the console launch have serious issues or something? For me, Destiny 1/2 even at their worst mostly have small flaws at launch (loot cave), or just don't have staying power at the end game (which for some isn't even an issue). I had an absolute blast with Destiny 2 for the PC launch. Played it for about a month and had a great time. I can see some people being disappointed in its staying power and some of its DLC expansions, but I don't think a solid argument can be made that it is an outright bad game or launch. I feel like the issue is that Anthem has all of those issues, along with the fact that it has game breaking bugs even after a few patches. Just feels weird that it keeps being brought up by people, when the quality of the product at launch seems miles apart.

But I just couldn't deal with fighting regular enemies who were taking 3 clips because I was 2-3 levels lower or whatever. It just didn't jive with me on a conceptual level. Yeah the lack of any real visual/cosmetic variety in any part of the game besides the paint jobs/materials is what has me so disappointed. Components and Abilities have 0 visual variance for obvious reasons and take up most of your gear slots. No armor drops until they add the vanity stronghold stuff later. Even Legendary guns are just base guns with a nicer skin and bonus abilities. If even one of these things were tweaked to give me some meaningful visual variety with loot I would be happy. There should never be a loot game where you don't run into instances where you see someone else wearing/using something cool looking that piques your interest. That is just such a core element of loot games to me, going back decades to the first time I saw something like a Lavis Cannon in PSO.

Yeah, inscriptions can be both interesting and utterly boring. I just don't personally like that 3 gear slots are taken up by gear that will never really be fundamentally different besides modifier bonuses. I suppose they could add legendary unique abilities later, but that would bring in its own balance issues just like how certain weapon abilities in Destiny were OP and you were screwed until they dropped for you.
Published

(18069104)

Thread Anthem |OT| GaaS Effect
None of that seems so different to me. The reason why people complained about the God rolls in Destiny was because those stat boosts were also meaningful and the meta meant you needed the perfect roll for maximum DPS. So if you cared about min/maxing then you absolutely needed to grind grind grind to keep up with the meta. There are definitely differences in the gameplay and how builds work, but I have yet to see a single explanation of how abilities being a drop actually add anything to the game. Those same bonuses could have been tied to actual cosmetic armor slots and the game would work exactly the same, but with more visual variety.
Published

Thread Anthem |OT| GaaS Effect

Ah, sorry when I said armor cosmetics I just meant a normal loot system. Not some epic skin MTX system or whatever. My one big glaring issue is that I don't see how the ability drops (which make up a lot of your build) will be interesting in the long run, as there is no real visual or mechanic variety possible. At least with the current system. It's really just the same exact abilities over and over with different inscriptions doled out by rng. I just know that personally if there were no ability drops and those inscriptions were just rolled into normal loot armor drops my enjoyment would be increased tenfold. The same builds and synergy would be possible, you would just have actual armor variety to choose from.
Published

(18068969)

Thread Anthem |OT| GaaS Effect
Yes, those same people also probably complained about the god rolls 6 months earlier. I never really complained though because I don't care enough to worry about min-maxing rolls like that. Trying to handwave it as a build-based game is a bit silly IMO. You could say the same thing about Destiny as there were specific builds depending on what kind of unique loot you had, etc. I don't really see how the actual gameplay loop is different, besides the core combat mechanics and flying. It's still going to be "Do hard content - get lucky to get OP Masterwork gun - raid - get raid gear - raid" The only difference here that I can see is that Destiny at least had a loot table of various armor that were part of your build and allowed some visual variety, while Anthem fills those slots up with ability drops where the exact same 10 pieces of gear drop with different numbers over and over.....
Published

(18067642)

Thread Anthem |OT| GaaS Effect
Hopefully there is an interesting system for customization/armor loot coming and soon. My biggest issue with the game is the fact that abilities are drops. At first I thought it would mean some kind of Borderlands style system with rng combinations but it turns out to just be the same 10 abilities dropped over and over. Which means the end game grind for 3 of your slots is basically going to be grinding for modifier bonus rolls. Unless I am missing something that seems very lacking and even similar to one of the biggest criticisms of Destiny (grinding for god rolls). I just don't really see why 3 gear slots are reserved for abilities in the current system, especially if the only real discerning factors are the level and bonuses. Would have rather just seen abilities tied to a skill tree or something and give me some armor slots to hold those various modifiers/bonuses. At least it would at least give you some variety. 90% of my matches end with 4 storms who look the same with different paint jobs.

I am kinda amazed at how your points are going over people's heads. Aquaman does seem way better than I expected and I am actually interested in it despite never liking the character, but stuff like how his movement in water actually works and how Superman can actually fly are things that really only have the slightest veneer of internal logic to them and are mostly just taken at face value without much reasoning. I don't think there is anything wrong with enjoying stuff like that (I love me some comic book movies), but I do really appreciate when creators go the extra mile to make sure their concepts and internal logic manage to line up. I am the type where those sort of discrepancies really do get on my nerves. A recent example would be in gaming. I am a big fan of loot games in general and played Destiny on and off like many others. It had its issues of course and when The Division came out a lot of friends tried to convince me to play it with them but I couldn't get past the first beta. And it was mostly because the gameplay design and the overall concept just didn't mesh well for me. Both Destiny and Division turn into battles against bullet sponge enemies at a certain point in the overall gameplay loop, but I have a lot easier of a time imagining that a 9 ft tall armored Hive Knight can take a full clip and keep walking, over some random looter in street clothes. If Cameron made a Superman movie (I know, will never happen) he would absolutely go for the OG golden age Superman that can't fly but just uses his strength to jump extreme distances.

Most of Japan's issues stem from apathy and a strict adherence to tradition, not ignorance or whitewashing history. Barefoot Gen straight up calls out the Japanese military massacres and is a staple of almost every elementary and middle school library in the country. I have ran into plenty of idiot kids who have no sense of history (just like any country) but I definitely don't think it's because of a lack of teaching here.

Just saw that! Yeah, I will never complain about more options. I just kind of find it funny that we are at a point when the fairly average BC offered on X1 is seen as some great boon to consumers when Sony has done it better in the past but earned basically no goodwill at that point and was lambasted on every other facet of the console. Some of that was obviously valid criticism and they did a bad job presenting their product right from the start, but I just find it a bit ironic that we start seeing all of these 'arrogant Sony' comments now about no BC, when 'arrogant Sony' was actually the one who gave us some of the best BC functionality the industry has ever seen.Yes, I do feel like my general tastes and stances do tend to be in the minority a lot of times. Maybe. But I still think the importance is a bit over-blown by a loud minority. I mean, it's a great bonus for me personally and one reason why I jumped in on the PS3 early, but I don't think there is any real evidence that it's an actual important feature for the majority of players. My phat PS3 is still running (last time I checked at least) and I actually use it more for PS1/PS2 games than anything else. I still expect them to go all-in with BC for PS5 though, because nowadays a loud minority can control the narrative very easily and they will see it as an easy way to get some good word of mouth.

I am still working on my Hard playthrough, but in the past Ace usually means you take more damage, enemy planes can tank more damage, and they generally get more evasive and aggressive. Sometimes they throw in more difficult enemy composition as well. I am sure it is the same this time around as well. The best part of the second playthrough for me personally is unlocking the secret enemy Aces. Sometimes the conditions are fun! I usually do a second playthough blind hoping to unlock some by luck, then use a guide to unlock the ones I miss. One thing I have noticed is that the game is even more divisive inside Japan. I have never seen a big budget release drop to bargain bin prices so quickly. There was an obvious push to cater to western tastes, so it does make sense.

Thread Final Fantasy XV deserved better. Are we gonna have to wait 15 years for a remake, if ever?
Nah, that will not happen IMO. Good console games still keep a decent price over here even with the console market shrinking. Games like Persona 5, Nier Automata, Valkyria Chronicles 4 still hold their price points pretty consistently. FFXV was obviously an example of the used market being flooded by trade-ins quickly after release. The only other fairly big games I have seen drop so quickly in recent memory were the Valkyria spin-off and New Gundam Breaker. I tried to trade in FFXV about 3 weeks after release and was offered less trade-in value than they would normally give on a decade old DS game.Yeah, it has definitely been a trend for years now. The irony to me however is that Japanese audiences tend to actually appreciate Western style games these days, but hate something like XV which is kind of a mediocre imitation of those aspects of western design.

I would take a XIII remake over XV honestly, despite disliking both of them equally. One of the biggest flaws for XIII is the fact that the game rarely pushes you to utilize the battle system to its full extent, outside of end game content. The base system is solid and fun, it just gets old. XV is just a bad system all around that is all flash with no substance. Also, I didn't like the story in XIII either but outside of pacing issues and undercooked villains it is at least more competently told. XV is just a train wreck in that department.

I mean there isn't really that much you can do with regards to missile combat in a dogfighting arcade game IMO. Guns are still viable of course, but just take a lot more skill to use and I rarely use them in dogfights outside of the MP. In SP I use them more often on ground targets while my missiles are reloading. You can also get some of the energy weapons fairly early in the upgrade trees. I did most of the second half of the missions using a pulse laser special weapon. I think the mission/objective variety is some of the best in the series thanks to the way they utilize the weather effects. There are also plenty of air to ground bombing raids in the game so I wouldn't worry there. A large majority of the missions are a nice balance of both. I think I have seen more complaints that there aren't enough straight dog-fighting missions in the game actually.

I really wish I could be hyped for this game, but the VIP demo did not inspire confidence. I would hope something as obvious as a pilot skill tree would be well done considering the flight is like the #1 draw for the game. I understand connection issues during a beta, but some issues seem to be systemic and just bad design. I had to work my way up to level 12 twice because my loading screen froze and the game only seems to actually count your loot drops and experience at the mission complete screen. I also lost a bunch of embers the same way. Loading screen froze before the mission complete tally screen, logged back in to see that none of the embers I had collected were in my inventory. Weirdly enough I went into freeplay, immediately exited and it gave me some of the stuff I collected? (I wasn't keeping a close count obviously but it definitely wasn't 2 hrs worth of drops.) Personally gonna take a wait and see approach on this one just like I did with Destiny 1. Probably get it around week 2 as long as word of mouth is still good.

Thread This idea that everyone should know how to code.
I really wish I had learned at least some basic coding when I was younger. I was actually very eager to learn coding in HS. but the Florida public education system just completely shat the bed. Always had an interest in tech, and when I lived in Pensacola (9th grade) I had a pretty cool electronics class which seriously piqued my interest even more. It was fairly basic stuff, but we got to learn soldering and how to build basic circuit boards and such. Then I moved to Destin, FL from 10th grade, and at first was happy to find out there was a similar track at my new school! Until I actually attended the first day and was told that we would be doing no physical work (soldering too dangerous! blah!) and that it was mostly bullshit quizzes on computers about boring ass logic patterns and trivia. It was the most useless class ever. The teacher literally just sat on his laptop chatting up ladies on AOL chat every fucking day. We would actually just finish the coursework months ahead of schedule and goof off ourselves too. I still wanted to learn more about tech, engineering, and coding so in 11th grade I took a new online class they were offering. It was supposedly about QBASIC but it was such an amazing waste of time it is still kind of unbelievable that it was approved as a curriculum, online class or not. Instead of actually teaching you coding, it was mostly writing fucking essays comparing the new frontier of coding to-I shit you not--LEWIS AND FUCKING CLARK EXPEDITION. I put up with it for a few assignments, and maybe it actually taught something at the end but I ended up just taking a W for the first and last time ever. I would love to give the person who came up with that course a swift kick to the arse. I am still happy with my career, but that one goddamn class pissed me off so much I honestly just gave up on learning coding. I really should have used my ample free time as an english teacher all those years ago to teach myself some on the side. Now, I am so busy with work and family I can't really find the time to dedicate to something like that.

Considering AC is mostly considered a PS franchise for obvious reasons, I think it's easy to assume that MS offered up a nice check to support development in order to grab X360 exclusivity, so it's definitely possible it had a bigger budget. I do miss the wingman commands from AC5 (honestly thought they were better in AC5 over 6) but I saw my teammates doing plenty of stuff in AC7 as well. It does seem like their missiles do too little damage though as I saw hits quite often but not many kills. There were a few times when I looked over and noticed a wingman in a furball with like 7-8 UAVs so they at the very least aggro enemies effectively. I personally would have preferred that they left the commands in though, even if it was the simplified system from AC6. I have a feeling it's less a budget concern in this case though, and more of a design decision. Just my hunch, but I think their marketing and sales teams probably wanted to try and bring in newcomers to the series (anecdotal stuff so far but I see a lot of people interested in it who have never played an AC game) and wanted to keep things simple wherever possible. I mean you already see a ton of people being frustrated by the difficulty and missing out on key radio chatter and such. I am guessing they felt the mission structures were already complicated enough that it didn't need another layer on top of that.

Thread Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown |OT| Game of Drones
Yeah, I am not saying they succeeded or that the rationale even makes sense. just that it might have been their reasoning. I personally like the wingmen commands, but I could see it being perceived as either useless fluff (if you don't need it) or unnecessarily complicated (if they changed the design to actually require it). If they added it, but you never needed to actually use it then it would probably be criticized, but if they added it in with the current mission structure/design I can basically guarantee you would have even more frustrated players. There is a balance to strike in the middle there, but I could see them deciding to nix it just to avoid adding another layer to things. Stuff like the difficulty settings and tutorials are a weird decision though.

Chalk me up as another person who is both surprised and extremely pleased with the multiplayer. I still want the PVE mode from Infinity and won't shut up about it for the foreseeable future, but damn what is there is already great. I like the fact that it's a fairly robust room system (for a JP game at least!), and as others have said the 2000 rooms are definitely the best place to start. You will still see some cheese in there but it's usually at the cost of something else in their build I am sure. I played with my brother in a variety of rooms (moving through 2000, 2250, and 2500 as he unlocked stuff) and after the first couple of rough matches we really started to dominate, especially in the 2000 room. I was running a F-14D spec'ed for extra power, speed, and homing on standard missiles along with 8AAM for high altitude drops to break up the furball, while my brother mostly stayed in the thick of it with a SASM F-16 build. We were having a ton of fun and had some legit Top Gun "ICE! ON THE COUNT OF THREE BREAK HARD RIGHT!!" moments where we were able to save each others asses and coordinate our shots and timing. I can see the MP in this game becoming a staple for us!As others have said, you really need to stay out of the furball unless your plane is specifically spec'd for close range stuff and you have the skills to pull off the more demanding maneuvers. Someone else said it earlier in the thread, but getting a high score is less about chasing down the top guy constantly, but more about coming up with your own firing solution and only firing when it is on your own terms. One of my favorite strategies with my F-14D was escaping the furball straight up and getting as much altitude as possible. Eventually someone decides that I am an easy target and tries to get a lock. As soon as I get a missile warning I do a 180 and head back towards the furball at full speed, launching my 8AAMs as soon as I have full lock. Even if they don't hit anything it usually manages to disperse the furball and giving me and my teammates a chance to chase down targets more safely for cleaner shots. The multiplayer only mods at the bottom of the Aircraft Tree are also key. Some of the parts at the end of the specific trees are real game-changers.

Honestly, I don't think it would be a proper AC game without some decent skill checks in the mission structure. I ran into a few frustrating parts during my normal playthrough, but most of the time I realized that I could have made it easier by just approaching it with a different aircraft or weapon. A lot of times I ended up just brute forcing it with my current setup though. A series like Ace Combat should absolutely have plenty of missions that really push the player to up their skills. It's called Ace Combat for a reason! It definitely leans into the 'gimmicks' a lot more than I expected, but considering how great the weather effects look and feel I love that they seemed to take full advantage of them with the mission scenarios. Hell, I would have added a mission where you had to escort a supply plane through radar blind spots during a raging blizzard or something.

The one theater I know of with ATMOS was playing something else on that screen. =/ It didn't really use the IMAX screen real estate to full measure, but it was still worth it because the sound design was great. The sound was honestly even freaking out my young son at times. Heh.

Yeah, this is basically why I am musing on it. It's very easy to place the blame on the algorithms (well-placed blame IMO) but it seems a bit reductionist as those algorithms are obviously based on popularity that was already there.

The one thing I don't understand is why the hell are young men so interesting in talking and listening to this kinda political stuff at their age? I mean, I was in high school during fucking 9/11 and I don't think I ever met anyone personally who got invested in right-wing politics at that age. Now, we have manufactured migrant caravan crises and people flock to this shit? It really just confuses me, especially as someone not living in the U.S. anymore.

Thread My brothers have all been brainwashed by the extreme right through the internet
Yeah, I know that is a part of it but I just don't understand why there would even be motivation to click on that instead of "BLOPS IIII NO SCOPE KILL STREAK COMPILATION" or whatever the hell. Like, those algorithms only really work because kids/young adults are already clicking on that stuff so it's a self-feeding cycle, correct?

It's definitely possible. There have been events in Osaka where they have pieces on display that are available for purchase, including payment plans. Probably a lot more difficult if there isn't an active event going on, but it sounds like you are already on the right track!

I absolutely love almost everything about Stardust Memory (the love triangle plot felt forced but then again what Gundam doesn't have something like that!?) and one of my all-time favorite scenes in Cima's death. When my boy Uraki goes in he is a goddamn beast. Like he doesn't even need to pull the trigger at the end, she's already done!

Thread What are the actual odds of a another country using Nukes again?
I don't think we will see a country drop one, but I am honestly surprised (happily so) that we haven't had some kind of dirty bomb terrorist plot. Some of the stories about the unaccounted for nukes out there following the Soviet collapse are scary. I believe there are only like 50 or so that are considered missing, but that's still enough to worry....

Nah, arcade sticks are great if only because they allow me to play a fighting game for several hours without killing my thumbs. I am actually more consistent with DBFZ on a pad, but play solely on stick because after about an hour of play my thumb starts to feel raw on pad.

Thread After beating RDR2 and having a couple of days to reflect. I prefer RDR1 in pretty much every way.
The problem is that you are still treating it like an either/or situation still. i.e. They have to sacrifice good mission variety for their strong narrative. You also point out that you feel other games get redeemed on gameplay, while RDR2 does it with story-telling and character development, but I would say that Spider-Man also knocks it out of the park in those respects as well. If the missions were supposed to be a tool to tell the story, then wouldn't you say that a larger variety of missions with more interesting scenarios would have actually helped strengthen the narrative and world-building even further than we already see? And I keep speaking about scope and development time because you brought up games that are in the same genre but have smaller budgets and shorter development cycles. I am pointing out that although there is a certain amount you can directly compare within a similar genre, there is the very important factor of development resources and time that sets RDR2 into a tier of its own. And as I said before, if you are talking about a team of literally thousands of developers, it is a safe bet that there was a solid dedicated team just for the mission design for a large majority of the development cycle. That's just how game development on this scale usually works.

Thread For those that have a work desk, do you decorate it in any way?
I used to have a ton on my desk at my previous job, but I have kept it pretty light so far at SNK. I need to spruce it up a bit though! I have a simple acrylic stand of Nakoruru, a couple of small SNK capsule toys that I pulled from the free UFO catcher in our lobby, and a Green Ranger Dragon Dagger that I got out of a capsule machine a few months ago when pulling random stuff with my kiddo for fun. I have a bunch of figures stashed in a box somewhere that I have been meaning to bring in. Will probably do that when I go through my stuff preparing for our move in the coming months.

Thread Spider-Man: Far From Home | Official Trailer 1 (July 5th, 2019)
I feel like putting it before Endgame would work against the film more personally, as the story might feel trivial in the grand scheme of things especially when you take into account how the MCU has grown over time, building upon each movie. Thought the trailer was absolutely excellent and I love the Holland spidey to death. Homecoming was a fun movie, and I give it mad respect for making the goddamn Vulture an actual menacing, interesting villain.

Thread Red Dead Online Beta |OT| 3:10 to Launch
Yeah, my brother is really digging the online portion (I don't really get it) and I have a decent time playing with him but I really want some more open world stuff to do and not just auto-aim PVP modes. We played a few hours of Gun Rush over this last weekend and I found myself pretty bored at the end of it. It was at least a good way to jump into some action quickly and not worry so much about high lvl players, but you still run into people with high lvl abilities and cheap tactics. I can't believe how much of a grind it still is. I feel like most modern MMOs have a quicker level grind than this shit.

Thread Is meeting the parents a huge deal?
Yeah, was always a huge deal for me on both sides. I remember taking my first serious girlfriend to my hometown during a school break and my mother basically telling me she got a bad vive and thought she was bad news. Didn't really try to shut it down but just gave her warning. And bless her soul, she was 100% right. That girl ripped my heart out and stomped on it several months later. Fast forward a few months later, I introduced my now wife and she loved her right from the start. Meeting her parents back in Japan was a bit nerve wracking as we had been dating while she was in the US, and I wasn't sure how they would react. Luckily, they were completely cool and we hit it off pretty quickly.

Thread After beating RDR2 and having a couple of days to reflect. I prefer RDR1 in pretty much every way.
Of course there are always going to be priorities, but it's not like it is an either/or situation when you are talking about literally the most ambitious game project in the industry at the moment. I can basically guarantee you that there was probably a dedicated team just for the story missions. I also think it is a bit weird to try and spin it as if the main story missions were not a priority considering the game is sold more as an incredible narrative experience over some free roaming open world game. Those are a bigger part of the narrative than the 3 different guys I sucked snake poison out of during my travels. I was just pointing out that there was a bit of weak logic in your argument at trying to point out games of similar scope, because they really don't exist. FFXV is probably the closest in terms of development scope, but there is info leading people to believe that team was mostly a skeleton crew for several years. That was most certainly not the case for RDR2, though I do expect the early years had a lot of iteration and throwing out scenarios. Just speculation on my part of course.

The problem is the way they accomplished their feeling of 'weight', which seems to be basically not optimizing the controls and leaving a fairly large amount of input lag present. Monster Hunter World is a great counter example of a game that manages to feel weighty, without sacrificing responsiveness. It's a fairly minor annoyance that a lot of people might not notice, but having a large amount of input lag definitely isn't improving the experience. It would be better with more responsive controls. This is something that Rockstar seems to have always struggled with though so I am sure a lot of people are just used to it with their games.

I finally beat Xeno over the weekend. I guess this is when the real game starts, huh? Trying to grind out the Legiana Long Sword now ( I think I crashed last night with just one Legiana Claw+ needed for the Rarity 5 one). Should I just be going through and clearing out all of my optional quests at this point?

Thanks for the tips! Oh, another question. How do you unlock the normal Kirin quests? I have already seen electrified Fur on the ground, but when I investigate it doesn't actually add any points to the bar. I am guessing I need to finish some other quest first then something unlocks at the Ecologist?

100% agree. I can live with the side content being a bit unimaginative when they nailed the feel of Spider-Man (NOT an easy accomplishment!) so perfectly.
