Thread I still can't believe the UK plan is to speedrun it. [UK Coronavirus strategy, see threadmark]
Just a bit of stiff upper lip and elbow grease is all you need! Keep calm and carry on, etc. I'm just glad my employer seems to have its shit together with this thing. TT/WarnerBros/WarnerMedia/AT&T is advising we all work from home come Monday, letting us take home our work PCs and everything. Deep cleaning the studios, etc etc. Taking no chances. Meanwhile my mum's working as a nurse on the frontlines and has seen two people die from COVID in just the last couple days alone, and it sounds like the NHS is barely providing them with any sort of protective gear. She's having to self-isolate because she's had direct exposure to it. The whole thing's fucked.

Thread Rumor: E3 about to be cancelled, official announcement coming soon (Update: All but confirmed)
It sounds dumb, but I always wanted to go to E3 since I was little. I know it's seen as a cringe thing, and it is gloriously cringe at the best of times- and the whole format is kind of pointless in this day and age. But I guess it was just a nice thing to look forward to? Not necessarily the show itself, but the yearly focal point of gaming news that surrounded it. I kind of hope all the announcements and stuff will still happen around that time of year, just in an online format? I don't really know what else I'll get excited for if it all goes.

Made the mistake of getting RiME on Switch and ignoring all the negative feedback. Oh and Sonic Forces, but that game is shite regardless of the system you play it on. Same goes for Yooka Laylee.

Thread When up means down: why do so many video game players invert their controls?
It's bizarre, I used to think inverting the Y axis felt really strange and uncomfortable- then for some reason Mario Odyssey of all things came along, and there was something about that game's camera that felt really awful to me. So out of curiosity I tried it on inverted, and I haven't gone back since. Do it in all subsequent games and game types too, including FPSes. Why that game was the one to re-wire me I still have no idea.

Thread OLED TV owners, has burn-in been a problem for you?
If AMOLED also counts, yes. My previous phone was a OnePlus 3, and after about 3 years of solid use, the system tray at the top had burnt in. With that said, the rest of the screen was completely fine, and you could only see the burn-in against pure white backgrounds, which isn't something you see too often. My current phone's a OnePlus 6T and it's had about a full year of very high daily usage, and similarly the tray is also burnt-in on this one, but it's extremely faint and I'd never be able to see it in any other circumstance, so it's not a huge issue. I don't know how much the fundamental tech in phone OLEDs varies from that of a TV OLED, but yeah, not really something to worry about.

Thread Is MicroLED TV going to be here before Next Gen hits its groove?
Probably not going to be here in time for when next gen hits its stride, not at this rate anyway. I'd love to invest in one but it'll probably cost an insane amount for years after it's even out. I'm not overly confident that my OLED will last me until MicroLED becomes consumer-ready, and I've toyed with the idea of selling it in exchange for a halfway-decent QLED, or maybe even a short-throw projector. I'd be okay with the 'downgrade' for the time being, at least until an OLED alternative without the shortcomings becomes financially viable.

Thread Are you brand loyal?
Nah. I just want to play good games regardless of what platform they're on. You could probably look at my console history and argue that I'm most 'loyal' to Nintendo. Wavered a bit during the Wii era, but their overall game library is pretty hard to beat, and the way they're doing things these days really appeals to me. With that said no company is beyond reproach, and I would never blindly continue supporting them if their practices turned shitty.

Thread OLED TV owners, has burn-in been a problem for you?
Yeah that's awful. Their communication is poor to begin with but that's definitely a level beyond what I experienced. I only found out about the cause of the 25% issue through RTings, they've done some really good work analysing these TVs... Pretty crap that LG doesn't provide support for, or even acknowledge, a manufacturing defect; I suppose they don't want to draw attention to it for fear of people experiencing the issue coming out of the woodwork to return their TVs en-masse. Who knows how widespread it really is.

Thread OLED TV owners, has burn-in been a problem for you?
This is exactly my problem with the whole thing. If you're gonna put down that much money on a TV, you should be able to expect a markedly higher level of quality- something that'll last you a good long while and continue to look great with no compromises necessary. Before the OLED I had a low/mid-range 'LED' TV from Samsung that lasted me a good 5 years before I decided to make the switch. And not out of any real need to switch either; the image on the LED looked exactly as it did the day I bought it. Ever since I got the OLED I've developed this kind of anxiety where I'm hyper-aware of whatever I'm leaving on the screen for too long. Stuff like HUDs in games in particular, but also stupid shit like YouTube videos of people showing a PC interface with persistent UI elements etc... All it takes is a few seconds of a bright or colourful static object to cause image retention, and that ghosting stays for a good few minutes before fully fading away. Retention and burn-in are two very different things I know, but you can't help but be conscious of it and worry about all of that usage adding up over time. I bought into OLEDs knowing there were potential drawbacks, because I thought I was supposed to be getting the best possible visuals for my money at the time. And ultimately that's not in question; when an OLED is in good order and is given the right content, it can absolutely sing. Like, I've had moments where my jaw's literally dropped because of how gorgeous something looks, and I've yet to have that happen with any other kind of display. But in my experience, those moments are few and far between, and they aren't quite enough to justify the constant worrying or changing of habits etc; it's always there in the back of my head when I'm using it. Not to mention all the problems I've had with my particular set, outside of burn-in... I accept that others here have had much a more positive time with their OLEDs than I have, and that I may have just had bad luck with my TV... But I can only draw my impressions from what I've personally had to deal with, which has been far from positive. I've had three separate panels now, and all of them have developed a defect of some description on top of burn-in. You really shouldn't have to be taking such a big gamble on something this expensive, it's just not good enough.

For real? That's what mine's currently in repairs for! This is the second panel I've had as well, first one got replaced because of a stuck pixel... Insane that LG refused to fix it for you, I read everywhere online beforehand that this issue was something they'd address outside of warranty... Mine's not in warranty anymore, and it got taken away by a local TV repair shop on Monday... Now I'm worried that they'll hit me with a surprise repair bill after the fact :P

That really, really isn't what I said. And I'm not pushing an agenda; I'm operating purely on my own personal experience with my set, and the sets of people I know and that I have seen in person. It was an honest suggestion and I made it with the intent of being helpful, not just to you but as a suggestion to anyone who owns an OLED who are curious about testing for burn-in. It's also worth mentioning that this isn't actually an enthusiast forum per se, this just a thread on TVs in an off-topic forum on a gaming enthusiast site; on top of that I don't know you, and have never seen your posts before, so with all of the above taken into consideration, I didn't have any way of knowing how my suggestion would be received. Once again if it did come off as condescending then I do apologise, but it absolutely wasn't my intention.

For recent examples, probably NieR: Automata, Subnautica, The Last Guardian and Undertale... Still really enjoy them, but the impact of several moments is definitely less than it was upon first playthrough, and I'd love to feel that again. I'd also like to go back and re-experience Ocarina of Time when it was brand new; probably wouldn't have the same impact if I played it for the first time now. Good! Phenomenal game. It took a little while for it to click but I got really hooked on the building, and the exploration is such a thrill... Yeah, I had shoulder-length thick hair until I was about 18, then it just started thinning at the top and wouldn't stop. Mine is definitely male pattern though, so not sure what to suggest in your case; reading your responses it seems it could be largely due to stress, so there may be a fix for you if you seek professional help. It's very hard to come to terms with for sure, I tried to fight it for a while but in the end it's just not worth it. Unless if you're extremely fortunate and can afford transplants or whatever, it's honestly best to just shave it all off and get it over with. I do miss having the option to grow it out without looking like Friar Tuck... But on the plus side it's very low maintenance, and much more dignified than the alternative. Maybe in the near future they'll release a cure and we can all be beautiful again.

New issue has presented itself on my C7... (The red is just a test screen FYI) This weird central 'window' where everything inside is slightly brighter. Mostly visible on the left side, it is especially bad on content that's heavy on the red end of the spectrum. I've no idea what's caused it, it's not burn-in... There's definitely other spots that've burnt in over time, but this has appeared very suddenly and there's nothing I can think of that would've caused it. I would've hoped that no company would ever actually use it, and that it's purely there in case if you invent the 'next big thing' while you're working for them. But with huge corporations you can never take anything at face value, I know a lot of people who've been disenfranchised by this kind of shit. Putting aside any kind of trivial lists or awards or anything like that, I guess GOTY for me is just... Whatever left the strongest impression on me? Doesn't necessarily have to be the 'best' game by any particular measure, it's more like... If I find myself thinking about it a lot, or if I feel a strong pull to get home and play more of it, that's a pretty good sign. Something that properly gets its hooks in me and keeps me engrossed for one reason or another is bound to be a contender. Finished it at the weekend. Initially I was a bit dumbfounded by the direction of the story, and the overall pacing is pretty inconsistent throughout. I know this is Kojima's thing in general, but the endlessly long exposition dump cinematics during the latter chapters ended up annoying me more than actually engaging me. But after going back to just doing Standard Orders, building and contributing to structures, engaging with the core gameplay loop for longer and exploring the world... The whole thing has totally clicked for me. The atmosphere alone is borderline addictive. Definitely a super important game that everyone should at least try, probably my GOTY.

1. I'm playing this through a launch PS4 on a 4K OLED. It looks absolutely stunning. Am sure it will look great on most screens but if your set can do HDR then all the better. 2. Nah, I'm not 100% on how the online / shared world stuff actually works as I've not experienced it myself, but from what I gather it's not literally a shared world where all players contribute stuff. That would probably get a bit ridiculous haha. Every time I've gotten caught and dragged under, it's just been a case of reaching high ground or getting a certain distance away from the monster before the encounter just... 'ends', and all of the BTs in that area vanish altogether. Usually my cargo and vehicles are intact afterwards too so it's never a particularly big deal.

I'm aware that I'm missing out on a significant portion of the experience, and I get the feeling that the lack of any player-built structures in my world has made it a bit harder than it's meant to be, but I guess as reassurance if nothing else; yes, the game is still very much enjoyable without it. Consistently very high to max scores (9s/10s), definite buy. Consistently in the region of high 7s to mid 8s and I lose interest pretty fast. Reads as generic to me. If it's a strongly divided mix then I have to see more and make the call myself, even if it means spoiling a bit of the game in the process. So yes, I'd say mixed stuff absolutely does interest me. May not always result in a purchase, but it's a lot more exciting to see the discourse unfold at least.

Thread I am worried about the development of next gen titles.
I mean, you're right in that triple-A blockbuster titles are getting harder to develop... I'm not sure where else the big two console manufacturers can go at this point, they seem dead set on this endless arms race for bigger specs and better visuals in lieu of any significant innovations. Naturally this will continue to hit devs of bigger marquee titles the hardest, heaping way more expectation on teams and demanding more advanced development hardware, bigger headcounts, more specialisation to cope with the endless ramping up of graphical complexity that gamers have come to expect. I don't doubt that there's some market research knocking around somewhere that tells us our biggest audiences want more realism, higher resolution, denser poly counts etc... But this is an unsustainable trend. The improvements get more and more incremental, more subtle, to the point where the vast majority of players won't even notice the difference (how they'll manage to make stuff like Raytracing marketable I have no idea). But most importantly this eats into dev time that could be better spent on iterating gameplay, refining core design, writing more competent AI, story, time for creating actual meaningful content to justify that $60 price tag. Personally I feel that most players are much smarter than publishers like to let on, and are in fact yearning for more games that just feel straight-up good to play, that aren't a gigantic ripoff, that don't demand constant further monetary investment and don't preoccupy themselves with aesthetics beyond all else. This is why indies can be such a breath of fresh air; yes, in some ways the advancement of tech hits them too, but they're far less beholden to industry trends, audience expectations, publishing strategies, marketing gimmicks, etc. This approach to games obviously does come with its own caveats that push dev times up as well (IE less overall structure to the development cycle, smaller teams with less specialisation, etc)... But the freedom to innovate in that space is so valuable to the industry as a whole. There's a ton more stuff to factor into this whole issue that I don't know if I'm properly equipped to talk about, particularly the advent of games as a service which approach the issue in a very different way... Ultimately though, you're right to be concerned, and I think that it's something we need to prepare for, or find new solutions to. Because we absolutely do try to evolve our workflows, and we do build better, more user-friendly engines with streamlined featuresets and automation... There's just only so much you can do when you're constantly preparing for the next big thing to come along, which will inevitably make your job harder.

Thread Games you dropped/ditched in 2019 and why...
I guess I 'dropped' Astral Chain in the sense that I finished the core story and immediately stopped playing, I never bothered to go back for any of the post-game stuff or side missions. For me it plateaued super early and didn't grow or evolve itself in any meaningful way; the combat in particular got super repetitive way too quickly. RPG elements were under-utilised and padded out, exploration and open areas were really limited / dull... But the biggest killer for me was the story, it was absolute garbage. Everything was paced really badly, the cutscenes were genuinely fucking embarrassing to watch at times... Sucks so hard because the premise had a lot of potential. I dunno, I should probably just blame myself for setting my expectations as high as I did.

To be fair the most problematic stuff (associating with bigots on Youtube, the art she's made, etc) hasn't been debunked, from what I can tell. If people find that stuff and her attitudes towards 'cancel culture' / her dismissal of supporting repulsive online figures like Blaire White etc. as "just different views" to be too problematic to support her, then that's their prerogative. I didn't know about any of this until reading this thread, and it'll likely affect my willingness to support her in the future, so I think it's pretty important and relevant to bring it up when discussing her work. Tbh I found the edgy humour and sweary writing pretty distracting also. It got a couple of laughs out of me in places, but those were mostly down to the timing of the visual humour rather than any of the actual dialogue. I really liked the premise of it, and the presentation is lovely- the animators have all done a great job and I don't doubt it could make for a successful series... But that disconnect between its pretty aesthetic and ugly writing really rubs me up the wrong way. Also the protag was ironically the blandest character IMO, Radio Demon captured my attention way better than any of the rest.

Thread Mental Health Era |OT2| Community and Understanding
There was a period years ago where I went through a lot of horrible shit in a very compressed space of time, and that was the closest to the edge I've ever gotten. There were multiple instances in which I just didn't want to live anymore, and each new bad thing that came along gave me more reasons (in my head) not to. I'm definitely better now than I was; I worked through those problems with other people and found meaning in new things in life. I did everything I could to make sure I'd never feel that way again. I do still have the occasional wobble, though mercifully my depressive episodes never last particularly long and they're never severe. Last week however, a variety of shit from years ago came back to haunt me, and I felt truly helpless and isolated for the first time in ages. The thought of how easily I could just escape it and end it all crossed my mind. Again, were it not for having people to talk things out with, I don't really know what I would've done.

Despite how decent the designs are I'm still trying to grasp what this 'game' even is, and what capacity in which it's currently playable... But most baffling to me is the fact that literally anybody is willing to dump such huge quantities of real money on virtual ships. Because there's paid DLC and cosmetics/skins... And then there's this. They appear to range from anywhere between $20 and over $1000, if the wiki is to be believed. I mean... Really? I would be hesitant to spend that much on things that actually exist, let alone some vehicles or objects in an unfinished game. What's the motivation? It's just absolutely insane to me. Also I think people are right to call attention to this without having to be labelled or generalised as haters / shitposters, it's a fairly relevant observation.

Endless potholes everywhere that the council doesn't bother to fix. Of course the drivers of these things don't care, it doesn't affect them, they barely even feel the bumps in the road. It's an extremely complicated thing to unwrap sensitively, and will take a lot of time to properly process. But, predictably, I'm already seeing people weaponize this in order to further silence and blame victims of abuse; this is absolutely not okay, and by far the most counterproductive (and frankly disgusting) thing to do in this situation. No reasonable person should be arguing the horribleness of this outcome. But discussion should absolutely not be discouraged. There is a right way to go about this.

And in all honesty I guess I didn't realise those features of Steam were even that widely used or valued, hence why I've probably come off as a lot more presumptuous and dismissive here than I intended, so I do apologise for that. To me Steam has always just been nothing more than a launcher, but obviously that's just me, so yeah, I will stop talking now, sorry.

Thread Ooblets will be exclusive to Epic Games Store on PC
Personally I would say... Don't use Linux for gaming lol, but that's just me :P The storefront will definitely make its way to Linux in the near term, but for the time being you could always try this: 1) Yeah the multiple social media trashfires were enough for me to never touch that shit again, fuck that noise. 2) For sure, I won't deny that a launcher that's been around for a hell of a lot longer than Epic's will have a more fleshed-out feature set. But as EGS has been around for a very, very brief amount of time, who's to say that those same features won't be implemented? Are any of those features really so key to the act of actually playing the game that buying an exclusive through Epic is really such a big ask?As I said above, who's saying these features aren't coming? And I mean, come on, achievements and forums... You're using one of those features right now without the aid of Steam :PTrading cards I mean, sure, I can take them or leave them, but I accept that people care about them; but screenshots??? :P You've never not been able to take screenshots. I won't reply to the others because they're all saying basically the same thing, but... In summary it always takes time to bring features to something that's brand new; obviously, right out of the gate it's not going to be as polished or developed as something that's been around for nearly two decades. But I don't think having to install another launcher is anti-consumer at all. Sure, it may not be explicitly pro-consumer either, but I feel the impact of this is being greatly, exaggerated.
Published

(23384740)

Thread Ooblets will be exclusive to Epic Games Store on PC
Ew, GOG, no thanks! But you do you! And it totally is just a launcher. Most if not all of the 'features' in Steam can be done just as well if not better by other third-party apps... Or, like, you could actually just run your Epic games through Steam itself, and get plenty of those features back? If you really want overlays, or whatever else is that Steam does? None of that seems prohibitive enough to warrant being upset by all this though. You can still play the game, which is all that really matters in the end, surely? What point am I missing?
Published

(23383381)

Thread Ooblets will be exclusive to Epic Games Store on PC
Aside from cultivating a bunch of exclusive games to make their special magical launcher thingies seem more attractive to install? That seems like good competition to me. Gives each platform the chance to create a USP for itself with the games it sells, rather than just one big company having a monopoly on the whole market. And it doesn't affect the end-user in any adverse way. Console exclusives, sure, I can get being upset by that; arbitrarily holding games to ransom on a particular piece of hardware is actually going to impact players, as it's a physical barrier. With Epic, Steam, GOG, whatever... the only barrier is a 50Mb install. What's the issue?Yeah they totally should, why not? I don't see what difference it makes, it's just a launcher.

This is definitely the headset to beat now. So, so good. That freedom and portability is killer. Still need to try some bigger titles like Journey of the Gods and Shadowpoint, but everything I've played so far has seemed to hold up really well. But I also echo the complaints regarding the casting and Guardian issues; it needs to be way easier to make this thing cast to more devices, and also some additional options for how aggressively the Guardian behaves would be nice. I don't have a ton of space so it's flashing up nearly constantly. Don't know if unlocking Dev mode gives more leeway on this. I also like the idea of hybridising the headset in the future and allowing it to work as a pass-through headset for PC VR games. I mean, it would make the Rift itself seem almost entirely pointless afterwards, but it would make a ton of functional sense. I imagine there'll be a third-party solution to this before long either way.

There was a march in London recently in support of Remain, reportedly over 1 million in attendance. Very civil, very peaceful. I doubt that'll be the case in the event of any post-no-deal marches/protests... 10,000 riot police officers on standby apparently.

Thread When did you start balding?
At about 18 it started to get noticeable. Was really really upsetting after spending most of my teens having shoulder length hair and loving it. Started by trimming it right back and trying to style it to cover up the bad hairline, before just giving up and shaving it off completely by the time I reached mid 20s. Wanted to avoid the Friar Tuck look at all costs. One small mercy is that I gained the ability to grow a decent beard around the time the balding got really obvious, so I have that to fall back on at least.

They spent a whole hour dancing around the biggest question, which is one of practicality; IE, 'what kind of connection do we need for this?'... What actual use will this be if I'm away from my 100+ gigabit fibre / 5G / whatever connection? Obviously I don't have doubts that this can and will theoretically work for some people if they have the correct setup, but it's a big 'if'. I just really hate the idea of streaming games in general, I'd much rather have the games actually running on local hardware that I can actually control. That's a big part of the appeal for me. But obviously great if this works for people who want it etc. Also that controller is wretched.

Went into it completely blind last night and fucking loved it. An awesome, brilliant collection of gorgeous art with a generous amount of fun action and interesting stories. That description disappoints me so much, if from the get-go they dismiss the possibility of the parents being involved, why bother at all? The McCanns' bizarre, disconnected and often standoffish demeanour, as well as their more-than-suspect backers and shady connections, are super interesting and compelling elements of this whole saga. I hope they don't just gloss over all that and spend 8 episodes painting them as the victims. There's no way they aren't hiding something.

I see her hitting L trigger, and the car does slow down several beats after she does that, but I don't feel like this is enough to suggest she's in control tbh. I would say that this is the closest instance of any of her inputs matching up to the action on-screen, but there's still too much time between her hitting the button and the game responding for me to be convinced, sorry. Even if she was just blatantly mashing random buttons, at least a handful of them would appear to be in sync. The way she uses the controller is so erratic, I don't know anyone who plays Forza like that.Sure, it's never going to be 1:1, that wouldn't be realistic, but there's at least some visible reaction to the analogue sticks; in this I can't see any at all. Please no :P

Still very much convinced this was fake, been watching all the clips and GIFs repeatedly and I can't see any point where her inputs convincingly match up to anything happening on-screen, so it's either acted or an extremely bad demo. They picked the worst possible game to show off this tech, though I suspect that was intentional; if they'd gone with a platformer or shooter, I imagine the latency and/or fakery would be much more obvious. Naturally I want this tech to actually work and for it to be useful, but on this occasion it really didn't show.

Nice video, though I feel applying that title to the whole industry is a little bit inaccurate; perhaps narrowing it down to just "The AAA Games Industry Is Choking Itself to Death" or "Games as a Service Is Choking the AAA Games Industry to Death" would be much less hyperbolic... Though even with that said, I can't really agree that it's accurate to say it's at the level of "choking itself to death" yet either. Yeah sorry, the DA jab was unfair, but you know what I mean though; it does seem hugely amateurish for sure. It seems like someone basically just saw that Chris Pratt picture that was going around, and decided to draw that design of Sonic in a handful of poses from past promo materials. But why would they consciously base one off of an '06 pose? In a 'style guide' for a movie and movie merch? Makes no sense.

What? No need for the snark, come on. Take past instances where they've redesigned/'reinvented' Sonic; they've never just copied "iconic" (the '06 one I mentioned is anything but) poses wholesale. They especially wouldn't do this for a movie that's designed to appeal to the mass market first and foremost. Plus this is a style guide, why would they use those very specific poses in media that isn't meant to be seen by the 'fans' (or general public) anyway?

Probably my dad telling me at 16 (after failing all of my A-levels due to being a depressed, confused, traumatised mess) that signing up to a college course in games dev was a complete waste of time, that nobody ever gets anywhere with those, and that I'd just end up sacking it off and dropping out "like I always do"... That I'd end up with a dead-end job and never get anywhere in life. I went on to get the highest grades out of anybody in my class, get offers from the best universities in the country, get a First, and am now working in the industry I always dreamed of. Ironically it didn't take long for his tune to change to shit like "I knew you could do it!" and "I'm so proud of you!", all whilst telling all his friends and family what a big success I am (and likely taking credit for it). Nothing I've worked on has yet been on the receiving end of a panning, but I honestly doubt I would feel much if I had. When you're a cog in a machine it's important not to take any sort of backlash personally... It's an attitude you have to learn quickly I think. Back when I was working on my first project, that feeling of being let in on a big secret before watching it get revealed to the public was so fucking surreal... But it was ridiculously exciting, and I became totally obsessed with following all the coverage about it, I got such a buzz off of it. I was reading all the articles, watching all the videos, scouring all the comments (positive and negative)... Because the whole phenomenon was new to me, and I was super invested in how the game was received; I ended up desperate to see what kinds of reactions my work would get (if anybody would even notice it). Very soon I realised that this is probably the possible thing to do, especially if you have low self-esteem to begin with :P It's way healthier to detach yourself to a certain degree, otherwise it'll drive you mad and you'll never get anything done.

Though over the years that changed somewhat and now I'm more into animation/cinematics, and all the stuff that entails. After working in that field for a AAA company for about 4 years, I'd love to try something new. Maybe indie, but I'm not in a rush... Plus opportunities in the UK are a bit scarce at the moment... ... He didn't say they did, though? Promotional material will always be required to go through a ton of departments before it's cleared for release, especially at huge AAA studios with big publishers. The Housers don't necessarily have anything to do with this, it's just how the media machine works. And there is frankly no way that this would have gotten cleared if it was anything other than an innocent joke; if it intended as a blatant stab at R* or crunch culture, it would've probably never seen the light of day, unless if someone really high up wanted to risk their job and push it through anyway. Otherwise, what's the point of having those departments in the first place? They're there to protect the company from legal trouble and prevent it from sending out the wrong messages. You don't need 'insider knowledge' to know that.

Oh only a very small handful haha, and most of them not hugely current. Sorry, should've been clearer... MMOs or simpler stuff (A Hat In Time for example) can hit that FPS at max settings easily in most areas (some dips here and there, but they barely show). But generally in most cases you can expect a pretty steady 1080/60 for modern games. Was shocked to see that Doom manages about 85 with maxed out settings... Overwatch can probably reach 144 if you crank the settings down, but will happily chug along at 60 when maxed out. The laptop can even run a variety of stuff in CEMU and RPCS3 with little to no hiccups... It's a bummer that you don't often get the full benefits of the 144Hz screen when gaming, but it's nice to have it at all. Even just with the Windows UI it makes a difference. More intensive stuff maxed out will definitely take a hit but are still playable... Hellblade averages 30, Planet Coaster averages 30, Hitman will hover at 45ish, same goes for Witcher 3... Yeah, it really varies, but everything's perfectly acceptable for a machine of this price range as far as I can tell (and keeping in mind those numbers are all for max settings). I don't know how much of an impact (if any) upgrading the RAM would have, but this machine is more than enough for my needs right now, so I'm not in a rush to tinker with it. And obviously this will all vary wildly depending on whether you're plugged in or on battery, you'd definitely need to pull the settings back on some stuff for gaming on the latter. But yeah, if you wanna know more please ask!

I recently bought this cool little thing after wanting a gaming laptop for years: I'd never really looked at the HP Omen series too closely, but as we get a nice little discount on HP's stuff at work, I thought I'd give it a go. Retails for £1k, I got it for £880... Specs-wise: Intel Core i7-8750H, @ 2.2Ghz base, 4.1Ghz turbo 8GB DDR4 RAM @ 2666 (upgradeable to 32GB max) 128GB M.2 SSD, 1TB HDD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti, 4GB GDDR5 VRAM 15.6" IPS display @1080p, 144Hz Smashes through most games at max settings, has a really nice build with plenty of ventilation space and a reinforced chassis, so there's no flex to the keyboard whatsoever... The 1050Ti is grunty enough for most things, naturally the library of games that can actually run at the full 144HZ the screen supports is limited, but the few that do are gorgeous. The laptop's great for productivity as well, runs Maya very nicely and I imagine stuff like Premiere etc. would be a breeze. Battery life is not incredible but good enough for what I need it for, averages about 2 hours on lower power settings and about an hour+ with heavier gaming. I don't really know how great value the standard £1k price tag is when compared to other similarly-specced machines, but at the price I got it for I couldn't find anything else that came very close. Either way, would highly recommend!

Thread HTC Vive or Oculus?
To be honest it might be best to wait a bit longer for potentially newer and better headsets to arrive... Unless if you're willing to shell out £800 for a Vive Pro, which relative to the base Vive package is a poor value proposition. Not really a big enough jump in quality or features to justify the premium. The Oculus with Touch controllers (and additional sensors) seems like the best choice overall, value-wise; tracking is very consistent and the controllers themselves feel much more intuitive to use. Headset is a lot lighter and comfier too (though this will be subjective)... The Vive will always have the edge as far as tracking quality and accuracy goes, though that edge isn't as pronounced as it used to be, before Oculus Touch was released. Also the Vive controllers are kind of bulky and ugly. Both have more or less the same software library (bar some Oculus exclusives, which can be made to work on Vive with some tinkering), both have the same resolution (Vive has clearer lenses but still suffers from that screen-door effect), both can more or less do room scale (again, Vive's superior tracking gives it the edge here, if only slightly), but ultimately, both will probably be a pain to set up at room-scale. Obviously you'll need plenty of space dedicated to it in order to get the best experience, and you'll need to strategically place either the cameras or lighthouse sensors where either a power outlet or a USB cable can reach... Obviously both can be used just with a single sensor at a non-room-scale level, but this limits what games are available to you. Personally I'd go for the Oculus, it's way cheaper, way more comfortable and delivers a really competitive VR experience for the price. The only real drawback for me is the type of lenses it uses- they can suffer from a bit of a 'god-ray' effect when you're viewing bright objects against a black background... But this will also be subjective, and I don't think it'll be enough to turn off most users. Sorry for the wall of text, hope some of it helps. :P

Well sure, why should anybody really care who plays and who doesn't? But that's why we're here, isn't it? Nobody told me there was a recommended threshold of hours I needed to hit before I could comment on this thread! I'm not at all, in fact I'd argue that the only insistence here thus far has been the replies insisting that my opinions are wrong... But they're just that. I don't claim anything I've said as fact... I didn't think I'd need to point that out! And I never meant to 'anything; your earlier reply suggested that I had no idea how the game works, and then my reply about not losing any matches yet (just to be clear, I was aware that these were CPU matches before I started playing) was a bit of a sarcastic oversimplification. If that read as bragging then by all means I apologise, that definitely wasn't what I intended... Why would I big up my ability to play a game that I don't even like? :P I'm always up for giving games a fair shot, but when I'm not even having fun with the basics or the general feel of it, I don't think there's much merit in forcing myself to continue. I'm not going to waste time chasing some vague promise of more fun when things get harder... And besides, difficulty does not necessarily equal enjoyment, especially when the basics don't click with me (doubly so when the game is free)! I quite strongly disagree that anything I've said thus far is 'misinformation', I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. Just because I have a less-than-positive view on something, regardless of the time I've spent playing, does not mean I'm misinforming anybody. I won't pretend that my thoughts are anything even approaching reliable critique, this is just me. People are free to take it or leave it! Anyway, I've gone on a bit too long now I think. I've said what I came here to say! Enjoy the game (or don't, whichever)!

I didn't expect any backlash no, because ultimately it's some randomer's highly condensed take on a video game, and that sort of thing doesn't warrant getting aggravated over. But clearly I was wrong!

Dude, I just came here to say that I don't care at all for the core gameplay or the visual design. Is that not reason enough to stop playing it? :P How is that embarrassing? It was free, and oh no, turns out it isn't my bag. Who cares? Nothing lost, nothing gained. I'm super happy for you if you enjoy it, but if the basic act of just playing the game within the first hour or two isn't grabbing me, why force myself? I'd rather spend my time playing games I actually enjoy thanks.

Nah, I played enough to know I do not wish to play any more! I didn't lose a single match in the time I spent with it, so clearly I've managed to get some handle on how the game works... Unless if there's a super-secret hardcore meta game hidden behind the mediocre shooty-bangs that I don't know about. :P

Thread LTTP:Annihilation staring Natalie Portman was terrible.
Yeah glad it wasn't just me OP. Extremely boring... Some interesting ideas, but largely undercooked and hollow. Glad I caught it on Netflix rather than paying for a cinema ticket. Everybody at work was hyping it up but I guess I just don't get it.

Sure it runs fine, 60FPS is nice to have, but I'm talking about the visuals and gameplay in general. Not necessarily from a technical standpoint but more design-wise. As far as gunplay, strategies and different character classes go, it all seems super flat to me; no real variety or excitement. I didn't feel there was any need to swap out heroes depending on the situation, or to create a particular team dynamic to reach an objective; just mash the fire button until you win. With other hero shooters it feels like both those things are part and parcel of the experience, but I saw none of that here. And the graphical style just strikes me as derivative and generic... I'm trying so hard not to draw parallels to Overwatch, but it's hard not to. I can't really pick out anything that's especially unique about it, nothing stands out and I got super bored just looking at it. But that's just me, if others are enjoying it then good for them.

Thread Crash Bandicoot is a bad platformer
Yeah I've never rated them at all... Not a fan of Crash as character in general, though I grew up with an N64 so I'm pretty biased in that regard! Having recently played the remakes, I have to wonder what the appeal ever was... They're such stiff and narrow games, with some of the lousiest controls I've seen in a platformer. But is that difficulty curve part of why people like them? I really don't get it.

Thread I deleted my Facebook account today, how about you? #deletefacebook
Nope. It's useful enough for me to see past the shortcomings, and in all honesty, I think this whole thing is just an edgy fad. Sure, it's shitty that you don't always know what these big companies are doing with your data, but it's always been that way. And frankly when you sign up to something as personal and intrusive as Facebook, you're going to be surrendering some degree of privacy either way.

Thread Hollow Knight |OT| Cute Insects That Just Want to Burrow Into Your Heart | Now on Switch
Oh hey, what an oddly specific thing can I relate to! Yes, I've also been playing Hollow Knight on the B7. :P I try and stick to just playing at night with all the lights off, it really pops when you're in the gloomy areas... Thankfully no burn-in issues as of yet, the health bar is (usually) pure white so I don't think that gets retained as badly. But anyway yeah, beautiful game for OLED!

Thread VG247 pulls support and coverage of GOG.com following pro GamerGate tweet [Update: GOG apology]
I feel they should definitely have referenced and denounced Gamergate specifically in the 'apology' here. Any additional visibility and hard-line stances on how shitty these people are is key, because all this tweet's managed to do is give the scum behind GG a platform, an excuse to come out of their little caves and spew bile. Goes to show what kind of audience they've cultivated I guess, I would've respected their quick response were it not for the fact that they're too cowardly to take a real stand on real issues. Will be taking my money elsewhere.

Thread I don't know if I prefer fully-open-world games or kinda-linear-open-world games.
More linear and structured please... The fully open world balance is a really hard thing to get right and often ends up feeling too empty for me. I guess the Zelda games are a good example; I really didn't care for BotW because of how wide open and barren it seemed. I prefer having my games designed with a solid, natural flow of progression and narrative in mind... Doing it that way most likely saves a lot of dev time as well.

A real masterpiece and a beautiful experience, one of the strongest examples of games as an artform I've yet seen. This was my GOTY for 2016 by a huge margin, and will stand as one of my all-time favourites. After such a long wait I can't believe it still managed to exceed my expectations. Totally understand the gripes about the controls, though. They definitely could use some fine-tuning and as a result it's not a game for everyone. A real shame that they got in the way of an otherwise stellar achievement.

Thread Ori and the Will of the Wisps - E3 2018 Trailer
Amazing!! I've been watching the trailer a ton, and it feels like I tear up more every single time haha. So many beautiful little details... The first game meant so much to me honestly, so it's super hard to put into words how amazing Wisps looks. Just when I thought a game could never nail its art style better than Blind Forest! Nothing else on the gaming scene has me this excited right now. 2019 tho...
