Thread Arms would be Nintendo’s #1 IP if they killed off Spring Man
Yeah, Spring Man is super bland. He couldn’t be more uninteresting if he tried. I was bummed when he was the pick for an ARMS Assist Trophy, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise since we now know we’re getting a fully playable ARMS character that almost certainly isn’t Spring Man. Twintelle is *by far* the most interesting and deserving ARMS rep in my opinion, and getting a woman of color into Smash’s roster would be hugely awesome and significant. I’d be pretty happy with Min Min too... I’m just really hoping it isn’t Ribbon Girl, though I think there’s a fairly good chance it will be. At the end of the day though, it’s more Smash content regardless and I’ll be hugely appreciative of Sakurai and his team’s work no matter who it ends up being!

Thread Which Mega Man game has your favorite soundtrack?
Literally an impossible choice. Mega Man 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, IV, V, X, X4, X6, ZX, Battle Network 2, BN 3, and BN 5 are all serious contenders here, not to mention other soundtracks I might be forgetting. I'll try to follow up later with some individual favorite tracks. I guess I'd say my top-of-the-top-tier Mega Man soundtracks are 5, X, X4, and BN 3, though (not necessarily in that order).

Thread What difficulty did you start with on DOOM Eternal?
Haven’t gotten it yet but I intend to, and when I do it’s going to be I’m Too Young to Die. I’ve always been horrifically awful at FPSes, I’m still horrifically awful at FPSes, and I happily accept that fact when I’m in the rare mood to blast through the occasional FPS campaign with as little resistance as possible.

Thread What was your "breaking point" in the Kingdom Hearts franchise?
I think people tend to overstate how confusing Kingdom Hearts’ core narrative actually is just because perpetuating that stereotype is the path of least resistance for most, but having said that, Dream Drop Distance is when I thought things genuinely started getting a little silly. The story was pretty clear up to that point — far clearer than it’s usually given credit for by bystanders, I think — but adding time travel to the proceedings really wasn’t needed and made what was still a pretty digestible story up to that point unnecessarily obtuse. I’m still super into it though, despite that silliness and KH III’s total belly flop of an ending. All these years later, there’s still nothing quite like KH and I love how shamelessly and earnestly anime it is. An Era user of taste, I see. :) Perfectly stated, couldn’t agree more!

Fortunately Episode III represented a huge comeback and then some, but man, getting there through Episode II was painful.

Thread Name one game that's great but too long, one game that felt too short, and one that felt like the perfect length
Great but too long... Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Great but felt too short... Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Just right... Okami. No, that last one isn’t a typo. Okami is a proper epic and more than earns/justifies its length, especially by the time you reach the actual end, which wouldn’t be as tremendously satisfying as it is if the journey to get there hadn’t literally taken you all across Nippon.

Thread You can only pick one: Super Mario RPG 2 or a true Paper Mario 3(same style ans as good or better than 64/ttyd)
Paper Mario 3 for me. Super Mario RPG is a bonafide classic, no doubt, but the last three Paper Mario games going off the rails and disappointing to various degrees after the brilliant Thousand-Year Door has just made me crave a true follow-up that much more. There's only one Super Mario RPG, and it will always be fantastic but it feels like a very complete, fully explored package as it is, so I don't feel the need for a sequel to that as much. But I mean, I'd happily take a SMRPG 2 as well, especially if Mallow returned. The best timeline would give us a proper Paper Mario 3 composed by Yoko Shimomura.

Thread What's your LEAST favorite of the community GOTYs? (poll)
Twilight Princess, for sure. It’s a good game but an average Zelda game at best, and The Wind Waker is roughly a billion times better. That should be on the list instead. I also don’t particularly care for Bloodborne or God of War personally, but I certainly recognize that both are fantastic games that are standout achievements in their genres and deserving of their GotY-level praise.

Thread X vs Zero
It's all right. It's nothing particularly special as JRPGs go, other than Mega Man X's mechanics/lore/characters being adapted surprisingly well to a JRPG framework. The game itself is just kind of average, though, maybe slightly above average. It's pretty much the definition of a 5/10 game for me (assuming you're actually properly utilizing the full 10-point scale). Not great, not awful, just thoroughly average. It's a neat curiosity, but I wouldn't go too far out of your way for it. Definitely not worth more than $30.

Thread How do you think that the next Mega Man Collection would work for the Battle Network series, the Legends series & the Star Force series?
However they separate out and price the Battle Network and Star Force collections, it's all good; all I want is for them to add quality of life features like those seen in the more recent ports of Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX, such as toggles for 3x speed and random encounters. The Battle Network games especially are mostly terrific, but their and the Star Force series' way-too-high encounter rates wouldn't land well today. Take care of that problem, and we're golden.

Thread X vs Zero
X is my favorite character of all time, and has been ever since I finished the first Mega Man X game as a kid. So, for me it's X by a country mile. I do love Zero too, don't get me wrong, and he and X make up the most badass, powerful duo in all of gaming. But when it comes to one or the other, it's X every time. His very name is a variable that represents his infinite potential, potential that is realized through his unique capacity to suffer and feel empathy for others, which is not something Zero (or any other Reploid, that we know of) is capable of, at least not in the same way. I also love his growth throughout the series. He starts off in X1 as a rookie with Zero as his mentor, and by the end of X1 he's grown so tremendously that he's equal to Zero in power and remains so throughout the series. Much later on, in one of X6's endings, Zero himself admits that X has surpassed him. In X7 he falters as his ideals push him to leave the battlefield, but he comes back more powerful than ever once you unlock him and is enormously powerful in X8. Finally, in a really cool example of things coming full circle, X steps into the mentor role for the Zero series, guiding his best friend as Zero once guided him. Both of them are tremendously powerful, no doubt, and neither one would ever win in a complete blowout, but at the end of the day, as powerful as Zero is there are hard limits to that power; and not only that, Zero is shown repeatedly to be rather fragile, dying or being taken out of commission several times throughout the series. X's potential strength, on the other hand, is limitless, and we see that brought to bear in his various armors throughout the series, which extend his capabilities beyond anything Zero is capable of (mostly). X's weakness is that he holds himself back because of his deep aversion to war and violence, but his unique capacity to care, suffer, and feel empathy for others means that when the chips are down and the occasion calls for it, none can compare to X. I fucking X. He's just impossibly badass, and he's also a lot cooler-looking than Zero, whether it's his default form or his incredibly slick Command Mission design.

Thread Capcom Mega Man vs Inti Creates Mega Man
In terms of quality Mega Man games, Capcom has: - The whole Classic series - The first half of the X series and X8 - The Legends series - The Battle Network series, minus BN4 - Star Force 3, and sorta 2 While Inti has: - The Zero series (minus Z1 somewhat as it's still good, but hasn't aged as well as the sequels) - ZX and ZXA, though while these are great games I think they're significantly flawed structure-wise So as much as I love the Zero series and, to a lesser degree, the ZX series, I think the clear winner here is Capcom.

Thread Since the original release of Dragon Quest 11, have you gotten into the series?
I had always appreciated and respected the series' legacy and importance from a distance but was never able to get into it myself... until playing DQXIS, that is. Dragon Quest XI S is so fucking tremendously magnificent that it ended up being a top 3 of all time JRPG and possibly a top 5 (definitely top 10) game of all time for me, and I absolutely consider myself a Dragon Quest fan now. Looking back, it's not surprising I didn't think DQ was for me for so long, because the first game I tried was the PS1 version of DQ VII, and, uh, let's just say that one's just a slight bit dense and unwelcoming.

Thread Have you appreciated the revival of the Koopalings?
Like many in this thread, I was super happy when they were brought back, and I still love them in general, but I think they suffered from almost instant overexposure. Taking a more measured approach to their (re-)rollout would have been better. On a related note, what's weirder is that I used to really dislike Bowser Jr. and just saw him as a poor man's Koopaling, and I don't know exactly what shifted or when/why, but I quite like him now and don't mind his role as Bowser's "actual" or favorite kid who gets preferential treatment. Don't like how the Koopalings were retconned not to be related to Bowser anymore, though.

Thread Does playing PS1 Chrono Trigger on PS2 with fast load times fix the load time issue?
Speaking as someone whose favorite game of all time is Chrono Trigger, please, please, don't play Chrono Trigger on PS1. It's the worst version by a landslide and casts a huge shadow over so much of what makes CT a) so deeply special and b) one of the greatest games of all time, particularly the soundtrack. If, for whatever reason, you don't have access to the game on its other platforms (SNES, DS, Steam, mobile) at the moment, just wait to play it until you do. The PS1 version is that bad. Actually, it's worse. The DS and Steam versions are the best, followed by SNES. Any of those versions will serve you well.

Thread DOOM 2016's regular shotgun is disappointingly weak, and it seems like it's going to be the same in Doom Eternal.
Yeah, that's the one. Thanks! For sure, don't necessarily take my word for it; that's just my anecdotal experience as a casual DOOM (and FPS in general) player. But yeah, every time I switched from the shotgun to the heavy cannon, it just felt like I was sacrificing a significant amount of power for range (which is a worthy trade-off, but still). Seemed like it just took a lot longer to chew through enemies (relatively, of course, since this is DOOM).

For what it’s worth, I previewed DOOM Eternal recently and the shotgun felt great to me. Super powerful, super satisfying. It was the combat rifle (I think that was its name? An assault rifle-style weapon) that felt kind of on the weak side to me. That said, I’m not a hardcore DOOM fan and haven’t spent much/any time with the originals outside of the first game, so I don’t have much context for comparison.

Thread Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection |OT| The Quest for Booty
Thank you! I'm very happy with how it turned out. :) Z Chaser is indeed fun -- way more so than X Challenge was -- and every single one of these games holds up despite some (like Zero 1) showing their age more than others. Save Assist just makes them even more fun, honestly. I just hope I don't get burned on the whole input latency thing, but I truly didn't feel even a lick of it over my weeks of playing the collection on my Samsung 1080p LED, so we'll see.

Thread Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection |OT| The Quest for Booty
Gotcha, thanks for the clarification! Unfortunately that isn't an option, but if it's any consolation, ZX Advent's English voice acting, while awful, is absolutely awful in the best way. It's less bad-bad, like Mega Man X7, and much more good-bad, like Mega Man 8 and X4. Just prepare yourself for a lot of booty if/when you play as Ashe. You'll know what I mean when you get there... And thank you! Yeah, I was surprised by Save-Assist granting infinite lives at first, but I came to really enjoy that aspect (probably because I'm older, with a lot less free gaming time than I used to have). Zero 1 definitely does come off as rough around the edges with that punishing Cyber-Elf system and weird world design, but look at it this way: if you're a completionist, that means you need to get every Cyber-Elf anyway, so it's a win-win. ;)

Not quite sure what you mean by "undub," but do be aware that the Japanese version of every game is included and ZX Advent, if you play that version, does include the original Japanese voice track. So if you know your way through the game or are willing to use a guide (or just know Japanese), you can play ZX Advent with 100% less booty. Still, as bad as the English voice track is, it's charming as hell in that amateur-as-hell, what-were-they-thinking sort of way... minus the offensive stereotypes like Buckfire and Rospark, but what can you do. Also, for what it's worth, the Japanese version of each Zero game restores the blood spurts, too.

Thread With the Zero Legacy collection upon us post your control scheme
At the time MMXLC 1 came out, not to mention during the review period, I didn't know about the actual figures and I don't have equipment that can test latency Digital Foundry-style. Personal experience absolutely does matter though, because it's a cornerstone of what a review essentially is. You can't review something without having personal experience with it, and I have of it with Mega Man. All that said, I'm happy to concede the point that it isn't technically equal -- obviously, I can't argue with hard measurements -- and I could (and should) have used a better choice of words than "playing just as well as it always has." But I absolutely do stand by my Love rating for my GX review of MMXLC 1 and maintain that it felt to me, during the review period, close enough to the original games that they generally felt like the OG versions. I was able to pull off all the same tricks and play at the same high level I associate with the originals, and my personal gameplay experience was not negatively affected. But now I'm basically just repeating what FallenHeroX1 said up above, and I'm in agreement with them, so I'll end things here. Thanks for your reply and feedback, and if you do happen to watch my Zero/ZX Legacy Collection review, I hope you enjoy it! (Anything I say about input lag excepted. :P)

Thread With the Zero Legacy collection upon us post your control scheme
I've been playing the collection for a few weeks now on Switch, you can find my GX preview as well as a preview discussion with prolific Mega Man YouTuber ShadowRockZX . With that said...To set the record straight, I didn't say I'm not sensitive to input lag at all. I absolutely do perceive it when it's bad, such as when playing Smash Ultimate online with people who have bad connections, or when playing rhythm games or some retro games on an unfriendly 4K TV. That said, some people like to act as though the classic and X Legacy Collections were downright unplayable due to horrific input lag and I absolutely disagree with that, at least in my experience with my setup. I reviewed both collections highly (except for X Legacy Collection 2 because of the included games ranging from decent to ass) and I stand by what I said in my reviews about them being great ways to play MM 1-10 and X-X8 today, and on the whole it would seem folks largely agree with that assessment if other critic and player reviews are anything to go by. Now, as for Zero/ZX Collection: if there is any input lag, it's so minor that it's virtually meaningless, both on my 1080p LED with a Pro Controller and on handheld mode. I don't have any equipment with which to test the actual latency Digital Foundry style, so I can't back this up with numbers or anything, but just like with the classic and X collections, I have played all of these games many times over the years as a hardcore Mega Man fan (with the exception of ZX and ZXA, which I've only played about three times each) and they play just as well as they always have. I haven't yet taken a death in this collection due to input lag or other control issues, and for as much time as I've spent with it now during the preview phase, I don't expect to. Does that mean your mileage won't vary? No, we're all different, but I know very, very well how these games are supposed to feel and play and Zero/ZX Legacy Collection doesn't feel compromised at all in those respects. TL;DR - Based on my preview time with the Zero/ZX Legacy Collection (a few weeks now), I'm confident in saying that any input lag in this collection, if it exists, is minimal at best and does not adversely affect the gameplay experience (which, again, is a high-end Samsung 1080p LED, not a 4K display). This also goes for handheld mode, and applies across every title. I know this won't convince the usual "Classic and X Legacy Collections are trash" crowd, but hopefully this helps reassure the rest of you at least a little. They don't, and as I noted in my preview and in my discussion with SRZX, this represents one of my few problems with the collection so far, but it's hardly unique as the X Legacy Collections didn't allow for mapping functions to ZL or ZR either. It's a shame and feels like it should be an easy thing to implement, but it didn't take me long to start feeling comfortable using L and R for these games (though yes, I would always prefer to use ZL and ZR).Well said. These takes are right on the money. :)Man, I was also beginning to think I was the only one! I'm an R dasher too. I used to be a religious command dasher (tapping forward twice) when I was younger until a friend at the time finally convinced me to sit down and try replaying X1 with dash on R. Suffice to say, I switched instantly and never looked back. Felt like a whole new world had opened up. Today, I can't not using R to dash. So for me, it's: B ("Cross") - Jump Y (Square) - Primary weapon L (L1) - Sub weapon R (R1) - Dash And for ZX/ZXA-specific functions: A (Circle) - Overdrive X (Triangle) - Megamerge / A-Trans

Especially with SNES games added, I think the service represents a pretty good value for how little it costs. The worst part about it for me is the fact that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's online is still pretty shit in terms of stability, but I don't play much MK8D these days so I can mostly overlook that... even if there's no excuse for how bad it still is. I've said this elsewhere, but it's especially relevant here: Final Fantasy XIII is, despite its flaws, a great game. A game. Final Fantasy XIII-2 is also a great game and has one of the series' best soundtracks to date. Thread What does Metroid Prime 4 have to do to meet your expectations?
Fair enough. I see what you're getting at, I guess what I'm trying to say is that for me personally at least, Metroid Prime 4 doesn't need to do anything mind-bogglingly different or amazing for it to meet my expectations. I would prefer it to hew more closely to Metroid Prime 1's design ethos with one larger interconnected world rather than a light world/dark world (MP 2) or several smaller worlds (MP 3), sure, but even if it doesn't or it tries something totally new, as long as it plays, looks, and sounds like a new Metroid Prime for the HD era and the usual Metroid Prime level of quality is there, I'm going to be perfectly happy with it. I don't think there's much it could do to disappoint me out of the gate unless they try to make it, like, Metroid Prime 2-2 or something. What I mean is, IMO there are a lot of people out there for whom the concept of innovation acts as too much of a gateway to enjoyment or perception of a game's true value, and those people are sure to complain if Metroid Prime 4 is "just another Metroid Prime game." But for me, I don't need Metroid Prime 4 to reinvent the wheel. If I sit down to play it and it delivers the high level of quality across the board that the previous games in the series have offered, especially 1 and 3, MP 4 will have done everything I needed it to do to meet my expectations. I hope this makes more sense and helps explain my position a bit better!

Thread SEGA/Sonic Team Announces #SONIC2020 Campaign, With New Logo And Promotional Art
Sonic '06 is definitely a worse game than Forces, like it's not even close, but at least '06 was memorable in its badness. It crashed and burned in the most spectacularly embarrassing ways possible, landing it squarely within the "good-bad" camp along with stuff like the OG Street Fighter movie and, like, The Room. Forces is just bad-bad. It's bland in its badness. There's nothing fun or funny (other than Knuckles' war line and various horrific avatar designs) about the myriad ways in which Forces fails... it's just there and adds next to nothing of value, memetic or otherwise, to the franchise. In Forces' defense, though, I will say that the level design quality and general fun factor ramp up a decent degree in the last third or so of the game. A couple of Modern Sonic's end-game stages were legit fun IMO. Forces did have a solid soundtrack, though. Far from the series' best and not as good as '06's, of course, but people love to shit on Forces' music when it's actually mostly pretty great and the real problem is that said folks just don't like electronic dance-style music. If you do, like me, Forces is full of bangers (though I will say the vocal elements are of questionable quality more often than not). The Classic Sonic stage themes are pretty unforgivable though, other than Ghost Town. Talk about missing the mark on what people love about Genesis and Classic Sonic music. At least Forces has Infinite, who is almost staggering in terms of how unbelievably lame and tryhard he is. To this day I still can't figure out if Forces and SEGA were in on the joke or genuinely trying to sell him as cool and/or menacing. ...Then again, '06 had Mephiles, who pretty much played the same role in that game, so I guess they come out pretty even in the "preposterously lame/tryhard villain" department. :P

Throw out AAA games, then. Sadly AAA games aren't going anywhere no matter what we think, but I'd gladly trade them in for a unionized game industry and happier, healthier development teams.

That's a bit different though, since I'm not paying full price for each game each time with the collections or VC releases.

Thread Final Fantasy VII Remake delayed to April 10th
No problem at all. Developers should always feel empowered to take the time they need to get it right, though of course I know marketing and bottom-line realities aren't always that simple. But based on what I played last year at E3 and PAX West, FFVII Remake is looking to be something quite special. I'd rather them delay and get everything as right as they can than rush it out the door even slightly before they're ready. There's to play in the meantime. Let it cook, get it right. :)

Thread Dragon Quest XI is literally a gift from god
Indeed it is. I’m over 100 hours in now — just started Act 3 a little bit ago — and I’ve long since come to realize that Dragon Quest XI S was not only the best game of 2019 by a mile; it’s not only incredibly special and singular; it’s quite honestly the JRPG that has come closest to matching the untouchable Chrono Trigger since, well, Chrono Trigger. Straight up, I’m saying it. DQXIS is this generation’s Chrono Trigger. It’s not *quite* on CT’s level for the sole fact that its soundtrack is so much worse, but everything else about DQXIS marks it as far and away the best JRPG since CT took the throne in 1995. What a deeply special game. Over 100 hours in and I’m not even close to tired of it, nor do I want it to ever end... that just doesn’t happen. This game, man.

I understand. For me DQXI uses its stark adherence to tradition as a springboard to become something so much more than what you’d expect and/or the sum of its parts, but clearly it didn’t land that way for you and that’s cool. I’m just glad it’s been such an utterly enthralling, magical experience for me, haha. And to think, I was never even a DQ fan before this (though I respected the series and its legacy)!

Thread Dragon Quest XI is literally a gift from god
Yeah, as I said — DQXIS can’t quite match CT. I mean, nothing can (or at least nothing has been able to yet). But it comes shockingly close, closer than any other JRPG has in the last 24 years, and that’s saying a whole lot. And don’t sleep on DQXI’s story. It starts off seeming for all the world like the most safe and traditional JRPG narrative out there, but grows and culminates into something that is anything but. Can’t remember the last time a JRPG has made me care SO much over such an extended period of time, and that’s partially due to an absolutely tremendous cast of characters. Sylvando alone is probably the best character of the generation.

Thread Should the Demon's Souls remaster/remake be named "Demon Souls"?
But I'm not explaining anything. I didn't come in saying "I'm right and all ya'll Soulsborne fans are wrong." As soon as someone corrected me about Demon's Souls indeed being about a single, titular Demon collecting many Souls, and not the general concept of collecting and leveling up various demons' souls, I said I had been mistaken and explained why. And now I know!

Thread Should the Demon's Souls remaster/remake be named "Demon Souls"?
Oh! Well hey, if that is actually what the game is about, then you're right, it is proper grammar. I haven't played it, but I've never heard of the game actually being about one particular demon's souls and/or the collecting thereof. I always assumed it was referring to the general concept of multiple demons' souls that the player must collect/level up throughout the game. Still comes off as an awkward name to me, but if what you're saying about the game is correct then yes, it is grammatically sound. Why is it weird to you? Stop and think about what you're saying here. Do you expect every person from every big gaming YouTube channel (or just every person on the GX team) to have played and be intimately familiar with every game out there? That's more than a little unreasonable. :P Now, I'm about to blow your mind here... Andre has never played a Mega Man game, not even the standard-setting ones like X or 2. Derrick has barely played any rhythm games (as far as I'm aware). Jon has never, or has barely, played a Kingdom Hearts game. Tom almost exclusively plays indie games. And I've barely played any of the Soulsborne games (just a bit of Dark Souls 1). They're not my thing. And those aren't even the only examples of games each of us haven't played. My point is, we all have our own interests and foci when it comes to gaming. It's impossible for us all to play and be into everything, so we cover each other's blind spots as best we can. That's a lot more common than you might think! As for Demon's Souls, I have always thought the game is about the general concept of the player collecting the souls of myriad demons throughout the game, thus "Demons' Souls" (plural). However I am apparently wrong about that, and the game is instead about a single titular demon collecting various souls, in which case the title -- while it still strikes me as a bit awkward -- is perfectly fine as it is.

The biggest one for me has to be Tidus. It's thoroughly well documented at this point that it is and has always been Tee-dus, not Tai-dus, though I know the original Kingdom Hearts' erroneous dub of that one Selphie line is part of the reason there was confusion about this in the first place.

Absolutely. Either Demon Souls or Demons’ Souls. Demon’s Souls is a blatant affront to proper grammar and apostrophe usage and it’s always driven me CRAZY. Unless the game is about someone named Demon who has multiple souls, but I’m preeeeetty sure that’s not the case. :P

Gotta throw in a vote for the original Vita model because of that absolutely gorgeous and luxurious-feeling OLED screen, but I've heard they don't hold up well over time so unless you can turn one on to verify, I'd go with the also-great 2000 model. Can't go wrong either way, the Vita is a great little machine. As for games, depending on your tastes... - Persona 4 Golden - Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster - Mega Man: Powered Up - Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X - Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA f and/or f 2nd - DJMAX anything - SoundShapes - Uncharted: Golden Abyss ...just to name a few.

Thread I can't enjoy Chrono Trigger as much as I think I should.
Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time. That said: Don't worry about how much you "should" or "shouldn't" enjoy a game. If Chrono Trigger isn't for you, it isn't for you and that's okay. While I disagree with your criticism of the battle system, I absolutely agree with you that having to re-tread areas like Guardia Forest and Truce Canyon to get to the same Time Gates over and over again represents one of the game's very few/possibly its only genuine flaw (other than Crono being a mostly silent protagonist, but that's a style/taste thing). The thing is, while CT may not be perfect, it doesn't have to be to be considered one of the greatest games of all time, because the straight truth is that whatever flaws it may have (and I think you hit on the only real one with at-times inconvenient traversal), everything else about the game is so immensely, tremendously, uncommonly spectacular that such flaws are just dwarfed in comparison. Also, while I respect your opinion and don't think any game is above criticism, you didn't mention CT's soundtrack -- literally one of the greatest of all time, and not just in video games -- even once in your entire post, so it's hard for me to put too much stock into the rest of it. ;)

Ah yeah, I caught that bit about the production values in general, I just think the soundtrack deserves to be highlighted specifically for how tremendously good and (ha!) it is. ;) But no, you're definitely onto something super valid with having to traverse certain early-game areas way too many times. I don't think Guardia Forest is quite as bad because you can avoid all the enemy encounters, but Truce Canyon forces the same low-level fights on you every single time you go through it and it's a real drag. The initial Time Gate's location in 65,000,000 BC is also irritating because you have to get through that starting canyon area every time you want to get to the world map or back to the Time Gate, and you're forced to fight there at least once.

This. I even picked up a set of modded Joy-Con with a proper D-pad in the Joy-Con L specifically so I wouldn’t have to play 2D platformers, fighting games, and rhythm games with an analog stick. Can’t stand playing any of the above with a stick, 2D platformers especially. But I really, REALLY love these genres, especially 2D platformers. Unpopular opinion: They should have doubled down on the bizarre furry space opera vibe they had going with Adventures, Assault, and Command. The multiple endings in Command especially were astonishingly dumb in how self-serious some of them were, but that’s one of the things that made Star Fox so uniquely great IMO. No one else was doing something so shamelessly weird with space animals, and the sheer bizarreness of the ongoing story and characters was part of the series’ charm. Then they took a hard left turn back into Star Fox’s safe zone and just remade/retold the original game/64 AGAIN... and all that charm and goofy drama weirdness went out the window. :(

I wish I had the time and patience for Shenmue today because it really is a special series even it's easy to pick on, but I just don't. I enjoyed my time with the first game back on the Dreamcast but even back then, I had a hard time putting up with its general slowness and things like having to wait a whole in-game day if your next story destination is some kind of business or shop and you arrive a minute after they close. Ultimately, I did finish Shenmue and appreciated the experience enough to get right into Shenmue II when it originally came out, but it was just too dense with too few mechanical improvements to the proceedings and I burned out on it pretty quickly. That said, I'm still intrigued by the incredibly detailed, nuanced, intimate world Suzuki has built and by Ryo's personal journey through it, so I really do wish I did have the time and patience to go back and properly complete Shenmue II and then move on to Shenmue III... I don't realistically see it happening, though. I just don't have enough time, especially for a series that isn't exactly known for respecting such a fleeting commodity. I'm glad Shenmue III seems to have mostly stuck the landing, though, considering how long fans have had to wait for it. I generally only hear majorly negative things from people who never cared for or understood Shenmue in the first place/don't understand its unique place in gaming history; fans seem to be pretty happy with it despite its issues.

Thanks for the pointers! I really would like to return to it at some point, though of course it's always difficult to find free gaming time as an adult, haha. That said, don't worry -- even without finishing it, I already understand why fans have been waited so long for a continuation! Like I said in my original reply, I really loved what made the first Shenmue so special despite the parts that haven't aged well: the incredibly genuine, quaint, and realistic feel of its settings, its living, breathing world (especially for its time), its focus on restraint and imparting lessons over pure action and fighting, the bizarrely entertaining voice acting whose style still somehow remains totally unique in 2019... there's a lot that makes Shenmue special. Just need the time for it! Rest assured though, Shenmue is far from the only series I haven't gone back to for lack of time -- and there are others I haven't even started but really wish I had the time for, such as Yakuza. Too much to play, too little time. :(

As much as I'm loving Dragon Quest XI S, for example, I find it utterly impossible to give a shit about Eleven despite some of the pretty screwed up things he goes through because he doesn't react to or look like he cares a whit about anything. DKCR was a really, really great game, and DKCTF being phenomenal doesn't change that. And in fact, it did a couple things better than DKCTF, namely the designs and associated difficulty of the extra/optional challenge levels. The soundtrack was pretty great, too, despite not being handled by David Wise himself. Kenji Yamamoto more than did Wise's DKC1 tunes justice with his rearrangements. Silent Hill 2 is obviously a classic for reasons I don't need to bring up for the billionth time, but it's more disturbing and creepy in a passive way as you piece the (really fucked up) story together, and the way it tells that story is brilliant. Silent Hill 3 is my favorite in the series. Yeah, the movie will probably turn out to be terrible, but Mega Man doing well at market in whatever forms he appears in is good for the ongoing health of the franchise in general. I don't want to go back to having to wait almost a decade between games, and if supporting a bad movie fuels that effort, then I'm all in. Don't even have to think about it. But again, it's important to realize I'm coming from a totally different perspective here. I didn't pay to see Dragon Ball: Evolution in theaters of course, but I sure as hell watched it at home after the fact and my wife and I had a blast cracking up at how deeply terrible it was throughout. Thread Vancouver woman has racist outburst in grocery store in front of her young son- "Speak English in Canada"
Hard disagree, though I can (sort of) see where you're coming from. But me, I have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to racism, homophobia, sexism, biphobia, transphobia, bullying -- all of it. (Not saying you don't or are cool with any of that stuff, but I take a very, hardline position here -- more than most, I would say.) Out yourself as a piece of shit, reap the consequences. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from consequences. People like her be ostracized unless and until they apologize, own up to, and overcome their hate. Why should any non-white, cisgender people she potentially works with have to put up with her toxicity? And don't fool yourself into thinking that she wouldn't get non-white people fired from their jobs just because if she had the power to do so. Nah, I have zero respect or apathy for racists and I am 100% comfortable with such people suffering social consequences for racist outbursts. Every time a bigot reaps serious, dire (non-violent, non-lethal) consequences for being, well, bigoted, it fills me with pure joy. But like I said, depending on this woman's particular situation that could trickle down and make her innocent kid suffer, so I'll stop short of going all in in this case. If she didn't stand to bring anyone else down with her, though -- let alone a kid -- I'd say she made her toxic bed and she can lie in it, hopefully bringing upon herself (non-violent, non-lethal) social consequences as a result. That poor, poor kid. I hope he somehow manages not to turn out exactly like her.

Not crapping on the guy's work -- what he did is impressive, to be sure -- but I think it falls well short of the visual identity of the remake we're getting.

Thread the best way to play MGS1: original vs twin snakes
Lots of people will tell you The Twin Snakes is garbage and to only ever play the original, but I never understood that narrative and I'd say to take those opinions with a grain of salt. The original is a masterpiece, of course, but The Twin Snakes absolutely does not ruin it and plays + looks better to boot. That said, some of the voice actors were replaced with inferior actors in The Twin Snakes (though not always; there's at least one actor I would say is actually an improvement over the original, but I'm biased in this case) and there are people who believe that the over-the-top quality The Twin Snakes adds to some of its cutscenes ruins the vibe. I disagree with those people, but what can you do? Still, it's a fair criticism. TL;DR - There is no wrong way to play MGS and it's an absolute classic no matter which way you go about it. The original is a masterpiece that holds up today, and The Twin Snakes is a really good remake of that masterpiece with a few divisive changes. You can't go wrong either way, though.

Good. Not that I'm happy for any delay, but they should take all the time they need to get it right and maintain developer quality of life as much as possible. No problem at all. Hell, I'd wait until 2021 (or whenever, honestly) if it meant crunch could be avoided entirely. The people who work their asses off making the games we love are infinitely more important than the games themselves. Treating people right should always come first (though sadly, it often/mostly doesn't).

Thread I'm growing tired of Switch ports releasing with obvious, glaring bugs alongside garbage performance
That's a fair point of frustration, for sure. I would just try to remember that in many (I would posit most) cases, games releasing in such a state isn't the fault of the developers but rather the publisher or, if they're one and the same, top company brass who are forcing such games to release before they're ready in order to hit established release dates. In a perfect world this would never happen and games would be held back until they're totally ready for primetime, but money talks and the priority is usually making as much of it as possible before cleaning up any messes later on (hopefully).Yeah, solid point. Some examples are egregiously worse than others, for sure; I haven't played A Hat in Time on Switch (or at all) but I too have heard it's a real mess, and Bloodstained was so bad that I went out of my way to trade my Switch backer copy for a PS4 retail copy. There are levels of acceptability here, for sure.

Absolutely, the best stories in games are better than the mountain of crap in TV/movies. The best stories in TV/movies are better than the mountain of crap in games, too. It goes both ways. Video games aren't an inherently worse storytelling medium than other, more established forms of media. Perhaps games have tapped less of their potential, true, but they've also had far less time to explore that potential. Still, some of my favorite stories of all time come from games -- and other forms of media as well. I don't discriminate.

Thread Since Sony bungled PSASBR, who else could take on Smash now?
I don't know. I highly doubt we'll ever see a roster even close to what Ultimate represents again unless Sakurai is able to make what he says is the impossible happen and just keep building onto the existing roster with an Ultimate 2. I'm honestly not sure there's anyone else in the industry who has the connections, pull, and influence Sakurai does to get even half of the third-party characters represented in Smash. Any prospective contender would also have to do without any of Nintendo's characters, which is also a huge part of Smash's draw and appeal. Sony made an honest go at it, but they blew it (in part because they, as you said, lowballed the budget). They even had the advantage of releasing right in the middle of the long, Smash-less lull between Brawl and Smash 4, and they blew it. I really don't think anything is ever going to be able to top Ultimate's roster. Just seems impossible to me.

Thread Since Sony bungled PSASBR, who else could take on Smash now?
As it stands now and in its current form, nothing can take on Smash. It's just not possible. Smash Ultimate has an objectively legendary fighting game roster that, truth be told, will probably never be topped by any other game -- unless Sakurai makes an Ultimate 2, which he has already said on multiple occasions is most likely impossible. To my mind, the only developers who have a stable of characters both large and beloved enough to even attempt this are Capcom and Square Enix -- Bandai Namco -- and even they'd come up very short in comparison to everything Ultimate's roster represents. Smash now lets you play a match with Mario vs. Sonic vs. Mega Man vs. Pac-Man vs. Cloud vs. Simon Belmont vs. Snake vs. Banjo-Kazooie, not to mention everyone else in the roster. No competitor of Smash's will ever be able to achieve this. Game, set, match.

Ridge Racer has been one of the most depressing, hardest-to-stomach casualties of this gaming generation. I would do just about anything for a proper Ridge Racer 8 for the Switch (or for every console), but I just don't see it happening, especially after the recent rumors amounted to nothing. I'll never be able to understand why because it's such a wonderful genre, but people just don't want arcade racers anymore on the whole and we see that reflected in the fact that almost no one's bothering to make them anymore... even Bandai Namco with a series as storied as Ridge Racer. I played Ridge Racer 6 nonstop during the Xbox 360's early days. Absolutely nonstop. It was also one of my first real tastes of online play on a console (Xband hardly counts...), and while that ultimately wouldn't stick with me outside of Smash and Mario Kart, I sure do have good memories of playing this online with various strangers (something I would never repeat today given how far online play has fallen in terms of toxicity and vitriol). I also played the shit out of Ridge Racer(s) at the PSP's launch, and plenty of Ridge Racer 7 even though it was really more like Ridge Racer 6.5. God, I miss Ridge Racer so much.

Thread Alright, Era. I'm tipsy so now I'm popping the question on y'all. FFXIII or FFXV? Which do you prefer?
Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, then! I respect your opinion for sure and I'm more than happy to admit FF XIII's flaws, but I think what it did right far overshadowed what it did wrong, and I had an amazing time with it (except for most of the Gran Pulse segment). In no way do I think it's even close to a bad game, let alone "very bad." And by revisionist history, I mean not only the positive critical reception you mentioned (which can't be discounted just because you or "a lot of people" didn't agree with them) but also its very strong sales as well as the objectively and uniquely lasting impact it has had on the wider FF series, with Lightning becoming one of the faces of the franchise and a fan-favorite character in her own right, regardless of how the FF XIII haters feel about her. Another important point the anti-FF XIII crowd tends to overlook is that it's far from the first FF that has been strictly linear (not that linearity is a bad thing and I in fact think it's a wonderful thing, but that's a whole different conversation). The real problem is that older FF games were much better at presenting the illusion they were linear when they were, in fact, not (mostly). Where can you go after you leave Baron in FF IV? The cave to Mist. Then Mist. Then the desert, etc. Your choices are incredibly limited. FF VII's Midgar segment? Entirely linear, and once you get to the world map, you can go to three places: Kalm, the Chocobo farm, and the Midgar Zolom fight. Only one advances the story, and the other is an instant Game Over for most low-level parties. Again, linear, but the world map helps present the illusion that it isn't. There are exceptions, of course; FF VI's back half is the most obvious example here, being almost completely non-linear, and FF XII is sometimes/sort of nonlinear to a degree (though I highly dislike XII and never finished it, so if it goes completely nonlinear toward the end, I wouldn't know). Anyway! I'm not trying to convince you you're wrong about FF XIII, because I know I can't and as with most things, that's entirely subjective. If your gaming tastes lead you to feel it's a bad game, then yeah, it's a bad game for you and you would probably review it as such. The exact opposite goes for me, though -- like I said, I recognize its flaws but am easily able to accept and move past them in light of everything else I think the game excels at. Either way, thanks for the response! I appreciate the conversation. :)

Thread The Odd Final Fantasys vs the Even Final Fantasys - what is overall better?
Let’s see... for the even ones, II is among the worst, IV is a classic, VI is a masterpiece, VIII is a weird and experimental fever dream but great nonetheless, X is also a masterpiece and my favorite in the series, I absolutely cannot stand XII, and XIV is an MMO, thus I’ve never played it and can’t count it. For the odd ones, I is obviously important but hasn’t held up all that well IMO, III is formative gameplay-wise but a slog, I personally never cared for V, VII is an absolute classic despite its modern-day blemishes, IX is among the best in the series, I also can’t count XI, I love and thoroughly enjoyed XIII, and I had a great time with XV despite its flaws. I guess they kind of work out evenly for me, with both sets having four games I like or love. It’s hard for me to choose between X and XIII because I adore them both, but X is ultimately my favorite in the series and comes with VI, IV, and VIII, which has my favorite soundtrack in the series, so I gotta go with even. The Wind Waker and it's not even close. It doesn't even begin to be close. The Wind Waker >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Skyward Sword = Twilight Princess. Skyward Sword has the better soundtrack, art style, combat, difficulty balance (still not great but TP's is just abysmal), story, and characters (except for Midna). Twilight Princess has the better world structure + design and dungeons by far, though. But The Wind Waker, despite its well-documented faults, puts both to shame in every area other than dungeons (though I would say the best of TWW's dungeons stand toe-to-toe with the best TP and SS have to offer). Thread Dogs and Infected in The Last of Us 2 Will Have Heartbeats
Haha, well, it probably has something to do with the fact that I dogs and prefer them over most people most of the time outside of video games. I don't think it's all that unheard of or strange to be more bothered by violence against animals than humans, though, at least in a media context -- the (super popular) John Wick films are basically the poster children for this. Hundreds and hundreds of people die in myriad gruesome ways in those movies but obviously you're rooting for John because, well, those people work for the guy who killed his dog, so of they have it coming. Hell, I think a lot of people would tell you the scene in John Wick 3 where one of Halle Berry's dogs gets shot -- non-fatally -- is harder to watch than any of the wanton violence occurring throughout the rest of the film. :P That's just how it is with me, haha. I didn't take any pleasure in killing the human enemies in the demo either, mind you, but killing the dogs just bothered me a lot more. Not saying you shouldn't be able to or anything like that, though, as it's perfectly and brutally realistic, which is what TLoU is all about.

It's every bit as awful as you think it is, but hey, that also means Neil and his team are doing their job well, right? But yeah, I already know I'll be playing this on easy because I'm pretty bad at stealth games as it is and want to be in the position of having to take out a dog as rarely as possible. (Obviously you don't to take them out at all, but again, for me it'll invariably be a necessity because I just suck at the stealth aspects of any game that includes them.) Funny how all the hardcore, super visceral violence in this series only really becomes truly disturbing (for me at least) when you apply it to dogs. People and Infected? No problemo, haha.

Plus, I loved what I played of The Last of Us Part II at the demo event a couple days ago, so I'm glad they're focusing entirely on that solo experience. A billion other games offer robust multiplayer alongside their single-player campaign, so I don't think the fact that doesn't is a big deal. That's just me, though. Fair enough, but the general consensus seems to be that the first 50 hours are the "worst" (and by worst I don't mean it's terrible, just that people seem to agree that's the chunk that's mostly dull/grindy/a slog) and I definitely don't have time to give any game 50 hours to get to the good stuff. Five? Sure, maybe. Fifty? No way. Especially when I'm not into MMOs anyway and try to avoid ever playing anything online with randos in general. I would love to see what all the Shadowbringers hype is about, though. MMOs are hardly known for their strong narratives, so the fact that so many say this is one of FF's best is really intriguing to me because that's a high bar indeed.

Eh, yeah, sounds like this isn't for me then, as I suspected. Perfectly stated too -- I find MMOs to be dull in general but soloing them is even worse, and I genuinely cannot think of an online multiplayer session of that other people (randos/non-friends) haven't ruined for me, so now I just stick mainly to Smash with friends in private arenas. My mental health is a lot better off for it too, haha.

I don't doubt Shadowbringers is amazing as I've heard a ton about how good it is, I don't have time anymore to wait several hours for a game to get good or go through a total slog to get through the good parts. I also have zero desire to suffer through any multiplayer/MMORPG component to get to that good stuff as MMOs really, really aren't my thing. If FF XIV ever introduces a way for solo players to get the full narrative experience while minimizing the grindy elements of base FF XIV, I will very likely play it. Until then, I just can't be bothered even if the story really is that good. :/Sounds like Shadowbringers is locked behind of base content that people describe as grindy and formulatic? Yeah, uh, no. I'd love to experience Shadowbringers but I definitely don't have 50 hours to burn to get there.

What. WHAT.of grindy MMORPGing to get to the good stuff? Even if the first one is the only really sloggy one... no way. I can't. I don't have anywhere near that kind of time, nor will I probably ever, haha. I'll continue to live vicariously through everyone who loves it and wait patiently for the next single-player FF. I'm in the minority who really liked FF XIII and XIII-2 and had a great time with FF XV despite its horrific narrative problems, though, so I don't feel as though I've been going without.

The original MMX is still king, but I loved Maverick Hunter X in its own right and also wish it had done better so we could’ve gotten Maverick Hunter X2-X5 as planned. The PSP’s relative lack of market penetration at the time it was released (heart) tanked any chances it ever had, though. Deserved better. :( And yeah, Mark Gatha was the *perfect* voice for X. Just amazing. I’m always gonna miss him and I hope they can find someone even half as appropriate if/when X9 finally happens. They should stay far, far away from the guy who did his voice in MvC Infinite, though. Ugh.

Early/mid ‘30s here, Final Fantasy VI was my first and once I played it (in its year of release, so I was a preteen/early teen), it was like a whole new world of gaming had opened up to me and I never looked back. Well, technically Mystic Quest was my first but I wasn’t into JRPGs yet when I got it as a birthday present so I mostly ignored it. Shit... I've considered Ben an industry acquaintance and have in fact gone out for drinks with him in Japan. Nothing happened that night that was indicative of any sort of behavior like this, but I also wouldn't be a target for him. This is all just reprehensible, and I won't be going out of way to continue any sort of professional relationship with him (unless, of course, he is legitimately absolved of these accusations -- but I always give the victim the benefit of the doubt, because the vast majority of the time they're not lying and blaming/not believing victims is one of the worst things you can do). And the N-word bit... god damn it, man. My wife is African. I could and would never excuse or look the other way about of the stated behavior, but I sure as fuck won't stand for that. What the hell is wrong with this industry? So many of us came from childhoods where we were bullied and ostracized for being nerds and super into video games... and some of us respond to that by not only becoming even bigger bullies, but going above and beyond and engaging in some deeply twisted, criminal behavior. I dearly hope this momentum continues. Every single one of these people should be outed. Every. Single. One.

I'm buying it for $60 and have no problem with that price point. The original is one of the best games of all time and this remake's visuals and soundtrack are, so far, super on-point. There's also the addition of the custom dungeon thing, so that counts for something as well.

Been playing this for a review discussion that will be going up soon. It’s nothing remarkable at all, but if you’re in the mood for what it offers (a pretty easy hack-and-slashy action RPG with nice visuals and an unfortunately budget soundtrack), it does deliver. The story goes in some genuinely surprising places early and often, which keeps me coming back. Strong localization too. I haven’t played Lost Sphear, but from what I’ve heard of it I’d say this is Tokyo RPG Factory’s best game yet, although that’s a somewhat low bar. It’s also a great game for when you’re playing on handheld mode and are not in a situation where you can use headphones. What’s there is quality, but the half-existent soundtrack ensures you’re never missing too much on that front. Probably my biggest disappointment with this game.

Thread For the people who have never played a Dragon Quest game before, did DQXIS demo sell you on the game?
I’ve played a little bit of VII and strongly disliked it, as well as a bit of VIII and enjoyed it but not enough to stick with it. I was sold on XI S the minute I first previewed it at SDCC. After playing the demo I’m even more convinced this game is going to really get its hooks in me, which is worrisome because I don’t have 100 hours to spare, heh. It’s just so incredibly polished, even more so with its QoL additions like being able to speed up combat, and the orchestrated soundtrack makes all the difference. Never thought I’d say this about a Dragon Quest game, but I might be in love. The only thing I really dislike so far is Eleven being a silent protagonist, but I know that’s typical for the series and if I can overlook it in my GOAT Chrono Trigger, I can overlook it here.

Glad you're experiencing this gem, OP. I still consider the original Silent Hill to be a survival-horror masterpiece for many of the reasons you mentioned and despite its poor controls/dated gameplay (which could also be said of the OG versions of Resident Evil 1-3). But yeah, you're still early on. Just wait. I made the mistake (?) of having Silent Hill be my first survival horror experience and playing it primarily by myself at night, and I had no idea of the feelings of sheer dread and fear I was in for. I even had to pause the game for a few minutes during an endgame portion because the whole thing just got too intense and I was so deeply disturbed. Marvelous game. I always liked the Silent Hill 1 + 3 duology more than Silent Hill 2 (which is still great in its own right).

Hey, no, you bring up a lot of totally valid points. Much of what you mentioned isn't going to bug me personally because my memories of the first Grandia are already based on the PS1 version so that's my barometer, but it is a shame that this port seems not to be based on what you and others have made clear is the objectively superior version of the game. I probably should have said something else other than "purist" in my post. Obviously there's nothing wrong with being a purist, and some good points have been raised about what it appears this port will be missing since it seems to be based on the PS1 version of the game (and if so, shame on GungHo for suggesting otherwise). My snark was mainly aimed at the majority of the people in this thread whose criticisms begin and end with "eww look at the texture filtering, those sprites are hideous, it's SO UGLY I'll pass thx" and aren't engaging in the wider, more meaningful conversation about other drawbacks this port may have. I just think the graphics thing has become really overblown and some people are just never going to be happy no matter what, but hey, different strokes for different folks.

Visually, yeah, I'd say so. Diminishing returns and all that. There just isn't very much further for visuals to go, but I'm also slightly older and find myself impressed by how good most of the games I play these days look, regardless of platform (that includes Switch). And that's not even getting into the truly stunning graphics we've seen this gen, like in Horizon: Zero Dawn or Spider-Man for example. When I behold games like those, I can't ever imagine wanting or especially "needing" games to look even better, and I don't see how they could by any meaningful degree anymore. I also have zero issues going back to 8-bit and 16-bit graphics and still appreciating those visuals too, though, so maybe I'm not the right audience for this question.

Thread When the main character is no longer the focus/face of the game due to popularity
Shadow the Hedgehog was this very, briefly. While much of this true in terms of X getting sidelined thematically in the series' earlier days, you're not telling the whole story or painting an entirely accurate picture here. X is shown to be as and eventually more powerful than Zero from X2 on; X1 is the only game where Zero is treated as a mentor figure for X to catch up to. By the end of X1, X has matched him in power, and he only increases in strength from X2 on. Also, Zero never saves X in X2 and barely has any scenes in it at all, let alone cool ones. In fact, depending on what you do throughout the game, it's X who either saves or defeats Zero in a one-on-one showdown. X also canonically defeats Zero once again in X5 (or at least fights him to a standstill, depending on your interpretation) and a Nightmare Virus version of him in X6, and Zero dies like a billion times throughout the series to boot. While it's true Zero does get the focus in X4, in X5 and X6 the lore is spread pretty much equally between their campaigns, and there's only one game in which X isn't unlocked from the start (X7), not "some." On top of that, fans almost unilaterally agree that it's by far the worst game in the series (with the way it characterizes X and the fact you have to unlock him being one of the reasons why). Then we come to X8, Command Mission, and Maverick Hunter X (and more recently, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite!), which all focus predominantly on X as Capcom had begun to realize by then that he was actually super popular and that fans didn't only want Zero. Also, in kind of an ironic twist, X and his lore actually become a huge focus in the Zero series, perhaps more of a focus than Zero himself until Zero 4 and arguably Zero 3. I think it's also worth noting that this has all come full circle in the present day: Capcom are marketing the shit out of X nowadays and have kind of sidelined Zero, which I can certainly tell you has been hugely cathartic. :P Anyway, just offering a bit more of a deep-dive to tell a more accurate and complete story here.

, because of Barret's wildly inappropriate, stereotyped, offensive characterization throughout.because, well, this embarrassing shit somehow made it into the final game: Arguably , because of the way some Spirit battles in World of Light match dark-skinned alts and Donkey Kong characters with racist stereotypes, though it's very hard to say whether this was intentional or just ignorant (I would posit the latter in this case, but my opinion on that means absolutely nothing). Cases in point: - Tac from the Kirby series (a thief-like enemy) being represented as one of only two dark-skinned Villagers with "increased move speed" - Dee Jay from the Street Fighter series and Mr. Sandman from the Punch-Out!! series, both black characters, being represented as Diddy Kong and Donkey Kong, respectively Draw your own conclusions, but it's a really, really bad look either way.

Thread Games should not be announced AT ALL unless they release within a calendar year
Hard disagree. I personally don't mind learning about games more than a year (or two) prior to release, but more than that, the only time games "should" be announced is when a publisher's marketing department determines they should be relative to their internal metrics and investor relations. If those decisions backfire at market, so be it and they'll pay the price (literally), but they're not compelled to announce games when you (or any consumer) want them to. Marketing people get paid to do what they do for a reason. If enough poor marketing decisions are made by a publisher such that sales are consistently kneecapped, then the good PR departments will course-correct on their own and you'll see games getting announced closer to release, when you want them to be. It's just not going to necessarily happen on your schedule, that's all.

It also feels so much slower than in the first game, where you could auto-attack while moving. Rex feels like he moves more slowly than Shulk and co. did in battle, and I just never warmed up to having to stop for auto-attacks to activate. I get that's an important part of the flow in the second game's battle system, but oftentimes my eyes would just gloss over and I'd wish I could just get on with the story already. I don't know, just not for me I guess.

Battles take SO LONG even when you know what you’re doing because nearly every enemy is such an HP sponge. I’m glad it really appealed to some, but I highly preferred XC1’s battle system.

No way, keep 'em coming. The more crossover guest characters, the better! ...At least in Smash, and I find it weird that you included it on your list. The others, fine (even if I still don't agree), but Smash is literally designed to be a celebration of video games old and new and that hasn't been limited to just Nintendo since way back in Brawl. The crossover element of one roster including so many legendary gaming icons from different companies like Mario, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Cloud, and Snake is an inherent part of its mass appeal.

I agree they’re crappy rewards, but Nintendo don’t to give you a thing for your birthday and certainly don’t owe you anything, so your complaint sounds like it stems from some sense of entitlement...? Sure, it would be really great if they updated their rewards to include Switch titles and it would be nice for us as consumers, but they’re certainly not compelled to. Not even a little.

Thread Metroid Fusion Vs Metroid Zero Mission. It's time to settle this.
It's Fusion for me, but I can't begrudge anyone who chooses Zero Mission. They're both wonderful games and it's a super close call, but I really just loved how Fusion changed up the regular pace of a 2D Metroid game with a surprisingly linear experience that really doubled down on the atmosphere and sci-fi horror elements of the series. It also told a genuinely engrossing story that offered rare glimpses into Samus' thoughts, humanizing her in a way the series never had before and moving the Metroid mythology forward in a way that felt meaningful. I the ending "twist," too, and how it's left completely open to player interpretation. So yeah, Fusion. But not by much.

This is mostly me these days, but there are mega-budget AAA games for PS4/Xbox One that come out on a semi-regular basis which I just have to play. Most recently those have been Kingdom Hearts III and Marvel's Spider-Man. This isn't to say I love everything Nintendo puts out (I'm not a big Fire Emblem fan and have little interest in Three Houses, for example), but the Switch just has an incredible library more tailored to my favorite genres and the general lens through which I view gaming as an adult.

Thread Good games that fell through the cracks.
By now, speaks for itself; it's an utterly brilliant and, for me, nearly perfect game in every way. It has a few minor blemishes indicative of the console generation it came out in (some overly long cutscenes, especially at the beginning, some of which can't be skipped) but they are entirely overshadowed by the sheer beauty, artistry, and phenomenal gameplay that defines the rest of the experience. It also has a compelling story that takes you on a long (some would say overlong, but I disagree), winding journey through a fanciful representation of ancient Japan that ultimately feels genuinely epic in scope and, oh yeah, it boasts one of the best soundtracks of all time -- and I'm not just talking about games. Okami is my second-favorite game of all time and the fact that it sold terribly is something everyone who didn't buy it should feel awful about. :P was a brilliant game and definitely Ninja Theory's best as far as I'm concerned. A wonderfully realized post-apocalyptic world, a deeply intriguing story with a REALLY good ending (though it's left open for a sequel that will never come >_<), and truly likable, relatable characters. The overall gameplay and combat were a bit basic and played it kind of safe, but I still found it perfectly fun. I LOVED this game to death and basically no one played it; even fewer bought it. :(

I've wanted to take stock of my VGM vinyl collection for awhile now, so I'm posting it here. Maybe it'll start generating some discussion again too! Video game music vinyls have become thing I collect now, just because I love video game music so much and want to own as much of it as possible on physical media that I actually use and, at least from the perspective of someone my age (34), is novel. I think I've managed to build a pretty decent collection so far: Banjo-Kazooie Best of Mega Man 1-10 (though it really isn't) Diggin' in the Carts: A Collection of Pioneering Japanese Video Game Music Castlevania Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Katamari Damacy Mother 2 Ninja Gaiden: The Definitive Soundtrack Vols. 1 and 2 Okami OutRun Rez Infinite Shadow of the Colossus Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master Shovel Knight Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment Sonic Forces: The Vinyl Cutz Sonic Mania Street Fighter II: The Definitive Soundtrack Streets of Rage Streets of Rage 2 Super Castlevania IV Super Hang-On Taito Sound Team "Zuntata" Arcade Classics Vol. 3 The Messenger Undertale I'm pretty lucky to have relatively easy access to this stuff. I live in Los Angeles about 15 minutes away from the giant Amoeba Records in Hollywood, and they get new VGM vinyls in surprisingly often. Oh, yeah, I it for the insane amount of X fan service and Mega Man X content in general. After years and years of X fans getting screwed over while every other iteration of Mega Man other than Star Force MM as well as both versions of Zero got their turn(s) in a fighting game, it was just pure catharsis, haha. Still so bummed about this game. My boy X finally gets his turn in a fighting game and it’s one kneecapped by a problematic development and marketing cycle and, as such, one very few people like or even played. :( But I will always love it for its story mode, at least. Not that it was good from a gameplay perspective (it wasn't), but it totally established X as being among the most powerful in the entire cast if not most powerful, given he's shown to be the only one strong enough to handle using all six Infinity Stones at once and being pretty much fine afterward, to boot. The scene at the end where he unleashes the Infinity Buster had all my fanboy neurons firing off like crazy. The first time I saw it I was bouncing up and down in my seat, haha.

I've seen quite a few people complain about the capped leveling per chapter, but I actually loved that because it ensured you couldn't over-level and just brute-force your way through (unlike XII, which was just braindead, at least up through the snowy mountain area you go to after the Tomb of Raithwall, which is around where I dropped it). Because Square knew exactly how powerful you'd be (or at least exactly how powerful you be) at any particular moment in the game, it allowed them to design boss fights around those limits that really did test your understanding of the battle system, the various combat roles, and the concept of Paradigm Shifting. The boss fight against Cid was particularly thrilling and stressful (in a good way) in this regard.

I'm always so glad when I hear of someone else coming around on Final Fantasy XIII. I've said this in many different ways in many different places, but FF XIII has been subjected to some bizarre revisionist history and I thought it was fantastic despite its (very legitimate) problems, and for me it was night-and-day better than FF XII. Couldn't stand XII despite The Zodiac Age being a massive improvement over the original, but I just devoured XIII and XIII-2 and loved nearly every second of them. (The less said about Lightning Returns, though, the better.) And I particularly appreciate the point you made about Hope. I feel the exact same way and have expressed that repeatedly. People give him too much shit just for being emotional, and probably even more so because he's a male and some folks have silly problems with guys being soft or emotional, but goddamn. Hope was a sheltered kid and I'm certain most of the people who give him shit would weep at the loss of their own mother too and/or would absolutely want to exact passionate revenge on someone they perceived as being responsible for their mother's death. People are weird. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thread Rumor: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Final 2 DLC characters potentially leaked? *possible spoilers*
It always surprises me (it shouldn't anymore) how few Smash fans are able to take a step outside of themselves and, should a character they don't personally care about or like get in, just be happy for that character's fans instead of raging about it and screaming "shitty character," "wasted slot," "literally the worst choice," and all that other nonsense. Having your favorite character get into Smash is an amazing, very special feeling if you're an enthusiast, and raining on a fanbase's parade just because they got a character you don't like is just really ugly, childish behavior. There are about in this game. Surely not every single one of those 80 has to appeal specifically to you? Anyway, I have absolutely zero hype or love for Monster Hunter and especially Doomguy, and if they're actually the fourth and fifth characters, I would be incredibly disappointed but I'll still be very happy for their fans, and vocally so.

Thread I Am Setsuna or Octopath Traveler for Switch
Octopath, without a doubt. Setsuna isn’t a bad game by any means, but Octopath is just way better in pretty much every way — certainly in the three categories you listed. It also happens to have one of the best soundtracks of all time, which is a *huge* plus depending on how much you care about music. The main issue with Octopath from a narrative perspective is that the characters’ stories are very individualized and, as such, the characters very rarely interact as fellow party members/travelers and mainly just react to the things that happen in their own story. It’s kind of immersion-breaking, but that’s about as far as it went for me in terms of negative impact. But, as others have said, there is a demo of Octopath available so try that out first and see how you feel to arm yourself with some knowledge and context going into the choice.

One of the earliest walls I remember hitting as a kid was Chrono Trigger's Giga Gaia. Chrono Trigger is obviously an easy game by any measure but it was my second-ever JRPG, so I was still learning at the time and its shifting elemental weaknesses + counterattacks just wiped the floor with me until I later figured out I was supposed to use Marle's powered-up pendant to unlock the black chests and get the various elemental armors. I still remember how fucking it felt to finally beat this guy. I was at a friend's house when I did it, I think. That was back when I was 10-11, geez...THIS. Absolutely this. I'll never forget this, god. This too. I think I had to restart my game, I was too young at the time to really understand and play the game well and I just couldn't beat Wiegraf and Velius.I forgot about Bowletta, but yeah, she (they?) is surprisingly difficult. I beat it, but I remember the fight being long, stressful, and close.

Eastern games tend to... - Have art styles, settings, character designs, soundtracks, and general aesthetics that appeal to my personal senses more often - Focus more on linear (or at least not open-world) experiences, though perhaps not quite as much lately - Have main characters whose stories you follow instead of casting "you" as a silent protagonist ...all of which I prefer, so Eastern games. There are plenty of Western games I like too, though -- I don't discriminate!

Shit. Really on the fence here. I've been a big Dunkey fan for quite awhile but had never heard he was one of "those" gaming YouTubers, or even alt right-adjacent. If he is, I certainly couldn't ever continue to support him (I'm sure he'd really miss my sub). JonTron and Pewdiepie and the like have repeatedly outed themselves as pure alt-right scum and should be regarded as such, after all. But reading through this thread, it sounds like maybe Dunkey isn't? He used one instance each of racist and homophobic language several years ago, which is abhorrent and while he hasn't apologized -- which I find equally disgusting -- he also has so thoroughly avoided using that language in the years since (as far as I'm aware, and I've seen a lot of his videos) that I never knew he had ever been problematic or could be associated with the scummy underbelly of gaming YouTubers. I'll have to think this one through. Love the guy's content and he's always come off to me as good people, but I also have zero tolerance for racism and homophobia in my life and I'm not sure if he hasn't used that language since because he's actually made positive changes and knows better now or because he simply doesn't want to court controversy but is racist + homophobic in his personal life. I do believe people can better themselves, though, and that we should allow (insofar as it's reasonable) people the chance to do so if they make an earnest effort to. The question is, did Dunkey make that effort or is he just hiding his hate and bigotry from public view now? We'll probably never know, but I have to say, I'm having trouble reasoning why he wouldn't just come out and apologize already if he really had changed for the better. :/ Damn shame this is something we have to be wary of at all, let alone with so many gaming personalities. If only people could just be, you know, .

People who have little enough going on in their lives that they police the difficulty on which other people play their video games are not worth paying any mind to. Ignore 'em across the board. Games are meant to be enjoyed. Play Three Houses (and every game) on whatever setting will result in you having the most fun and don't look back. Screw the gaming community's self-styled "gatekeepers." I don't plan on playing Three Houses myself, but if I was, I'd likely go with casual mode. I feel like they could've fit Ada in the RE 4 part as well, but eh, that's just me.This is correct, at least as far as I'm aware. I briefly played the Switch version of Resident Evil 6 at E3 and it definitely had HD rumble (which kicked in when I fired an assault rifle in one of Chris' missions). Between the two of us, my wife and I subscribe to Hulu ad-free, Netflix, Nintendo Switch Online, and PS+. PS+’s value has severely plummeted as of late, though, and I play the vast majority of indie titles on my Switch, so I’ll probably, finally end my subscription with the current cycle. Meanwhile, everyone knows Nintendo Switch Online mostly sucks, but it’s cheap enough that you generally get what you pay for and having access to at least Smash and Mario Kart online is a must for me, so that sub’s not going anywhere. So with PS+ out of the picture, our monthly entertainment subscription services come out to around $25/month. I’m more than happy with that considering the amount of content we get for that, especially with Hulu having such a wide, varied selection of anime and basically making Crunchyroll obsolete.

She and her game have her haters, yeah, especially here on Era, but IMO she's a badass and her Lightning Returns design (seen here) was even better, even if the game itself was kind of crap. I admit she's not the most exciting character ever, but she does have more emotional range than she's given credit for and I like her character arc throughout the first game. Lightning's just great, fight me. Aloy, star of the fantastic Horizon: Zero Dawn. Phenomenal design, and she's incredibly likable if a bit one-dimensional about it. Then the third game came along and against all odds, it was just fantastic across the board, serving as the pinnacle of the series in every way and even ending up as one of the PS2’s best JRPGs!

Thread Brawl is the 2nd worst Smash game, but man that theme slaps
The best hot take and an incredibly good first post. So would I! Anyway, yeah, despite any issues Brawl has (and it does have some) its main theme remains probably my second-favorite in the series, behind Ultimate. MAYBE just barely my third-favorite behind Ultimate and Smash 4, but it'd be really close between Brawl and 4. EDIT: The Smash 4 revisionist history going on in this thread is wild. A lack of single-player content aside, Smash 4 was phenomenal until Cloud and especially Bayo released, wrecking the balance. But that happened only toward the tail end of its life cycle, and up to then Smash 4 was the best Smash yet... until it was utterly invalidated by Ultimate, of course, which I do agree makes it much more uninteresting to go back to than, say, Brawl and 64. Ultimate's just going to really hard to top. A legendary (and still growing!) roster, best gameplay, mechanics, and balance in the series yet, solid (if too sloggy) single-player content, a phenomenal soundtrack that's as massive as it is consistent despite its size, and (obviously) the series' best graphics to date. I really don't know where they go from here, but I sure hope "a full reboot" isn't the answer.

Holy shit. This is the single best explanation I have ever seen of what playing FF XV feels like. Like, I quite enjoyed the gameplay and battle system and sank 95 hours into the game, but the story was an abject mess and what you said literally could not describe it more perfectly. Well done. Against all odds, though, its ending was actually really good. That last scene between the bros is basically perfect. I'm not crying, you are!

Soundtrack, and it's not even close. Glad to see most of Era agrees with me! 8- and 16-bit graphics never age in my eyes because pixel art remains beautiful and appealing to this day, but I can easily go back to a game whose visuals really have aged poorly, like Final Fantasy VII, and enjoy it just as much as I did back in the day regardless of its hideously blocky character models. But I would and could never, ever play FF VII (or any JRPG, or really 99% of games period) on mute. What would be the point? Most games lose at least half their character, atmosphere, personality, and/or emotional resonance without their music. It's the soundtrack, always.

This asshole right here. Copen from the Azure Striker Gunvolt series is the very definition of this for me. I completed his story in Gunvolt 2 exactly once because the game (as well as its prequel) goes SO far out of its way to drive home the point that the dude is a legit scumbag, to the extent that I hesitate to even call him an "anti-hero" or "deuteragonist." He's pretty much just a villain you get to play as, and a totally contemptible one at that. Copen being is also why, as much as I like the Gunvolt series, I'm finding it tough to get *that* excited for Luminous Avenger iX. I really dislike the idea of playing an entire game as Copen; regardless of whatever happens in LAiX's story, I don't know if there's anything he could do at this point that would redeem him in my eyes. God, I hate this character so much. But, I mean, I'll still play the game because I love Inti. <3

I'm loving all the focus on X in this game, including his totally different, almost doll-like art style combined with elements of X's appearance in the Mega Man Zero series (mainly the halo and his eyes). I wouldn't ever want to see this style employed in a (perhaps not, at this point) theoretical X9 or other mainline X game, and several elements of his characterization in this game are inaccurate in terms of the traits that make X who he is and I don't like that, but I'm otherwise digging the game's non-canon, experimental approach to X. I'm also just happy to see him (and not Zero) in the main roster at all, though I'm sure Zero's on his way to being playable too before long. There's been a real groundswell around X recently, and this just adds to that, making me hopeful that Capcom finally has something properly exciting in the works for MMX fans... but that's a topic for another thread.

Thread Zelda Tech Demo (Wii U) - Will we ever see a Zelda with a similar visual style?
There’s quite a bit to unpack here. The first thing I want to say is there is no such thing as a fully objective review. Each of us can only ever approach a review of anything from the perspective of our own individual experiences and tastes, and that is actually precisely what gives reviews their value — the unique perspective they’re produced from. No one’s review of anything should be taken as absolute, objective gospel. I encourage you to do a little digging and find critics whose gaming perspectives and tastes line up with your own, which will then help you make an informed decision about how much personal stock you should put into an individual critic’s subjective views. It’s not Andre’s (or any of our) job to claim he likes TP when he doesn’t, or to say it’s an “objectively great game” if he thinks it isn’t (and while I don’t dislike it as much as he does, I agree with him in that TP isn’t great). I think it goes without saying that any verdicts we or other critics render are merely our opinions. They are not intended to be taken as fact, nor have we ever tried to pass them off as such. But we are well within our rights to say we don’t like something and to express those views in a review, because the point of any review is to share an informed, opinionated perspective of something. It shouldn’t need to be clarified in a review that its content is merely the informed opinion of the reviewer. Also, you cite ALttP as an objectively great game, and I would personally agree with you there. But our thoughts that ALttP is objectively great are still our opinions at the end of the day. Otherwise, who’s the gatekeeper on what’s objectively great or not? Certainly not either of us. Believe it or not, there are people out there who don’t think ALttP is all that great. Who are we to tell them they’re objectively wrong? We can only say we think they are and back that opinion up with our perspective. What is and isn’t objectively good or bad is not our (or any one person’s) call to make, and thinking that way is IMO a very slippery slope. If you‘re familiar with Andre’s gaming tastes at all, you already likely know he didn’t like OG TP either, so you should consider that perspective for his TP HD review. If you want to watch a more positive review of TP HD that lines up with your own opinion of it, then watch the review of a critic who is known to be a TP fan (or at least isn’t known not to be a TP fan). Differences in perspectives aside, though, thank you for having followed our content previously, even if you may not anymore. We always appreciate constructive feedback!

Not only does it have a killer soundtrack (perhaps my favorite in the Classic series), it's got some of the series' best level designs as well -- I'm looking at you, Gravity Man. Laypeople like to talk about Capcom starting to run out of steam and/or ideas for the series starting with Mega Man 4, but I couldn't disagree more. 5 and 6 are especially good and have aged better than some aspects of the "untouchable" Mega Man 2 -- the Wily Castle portion, mainly. Still don't know how/why Mega Man 2's Wily Castle gets a pass from so many people. The level design falls off a cliff right around the Guts Dozer and Boobeam Trap stages.

Super Mario Maker 2 is also a blast, but I haven't been playing it for long and it's not specifically a "first half of the year" release. I'm also still playing Smash Bros. Ys VIII is indeed utterly brilliant and took me completely off guard. Couldn't put it down until I had 100%'d it. Amazing, amazing game and definitely one of best JRPGs of recent times. A couple of the other games on your list really don't deserve to be there though -- for example, no version of Final Fantasy XII is worthy of even standing in Ys VIII's shadow, IMO. I know a certain segment of the FF fanbase loves it, but it's easily one of my least favorite games in the series. Different strokes for different folks, though!

Oh, for sure -- and I agree with you, it absolutely is enormously better than vanilla FF XII in every way and undoes most of what I couldn't stand about the License Board and general character progression/building. Those improvements pushed me farther into the game than I had ever gotten previously before dropping it. But I still ended up dropped The Zodiac Age somewhere around halfway-ish through the game, right after the Tomb of Raithwall. I couldn't get past how horrifically dull and uninteresting the narrative and main characters -- Balthier, Fran, and Basch excepted -- remained even up to that point, and I still don't like the Gambit/"program the game to play itself while you watch" system at all. I recognize that it isn't an objectively bad game and that some people really adore it, but I just will never be one of those people. :(

Yeah, Super Paper Mario is when the series started trending downward in quality. If you haven't started enjoying it by where you've said you are, I don't think anything later on is going to turn it around for you. IIRC, the third chapter had some of the best, most biting and self-aware writing in the game, but I'm not sure that alone is worth pushing ahead for. Also, just don't even bother with Sticker Star. It's bad, and Color Splash is a significantly better version of it (but still nowhere near the first two games in any way, shape, or form except its soundtrack).

The series just isn't my jam, though I enjoy watching them be played and following the cheesy, twisty-turny story is fun. ...That is, unless it was the one character it would never be, which is Sheva. For the ones who know they need and are willing to be educated, sure. In my experience, though, those kinds of people account for a depressingly small minority. But even then: it only takes one clueless idiot, whether they're simply ignorant or an intentional troll who's trying to be mean as possible, to push someone who is suffering from mental illness over the edge. That is something I have zero tolerance for. So no, I don't really have anything for those people. You are not wrong when you say it would be more useful and effective to educate those who are willing, but I'm just not that person. There are plenty of people who are much more accommodating and patient with such people than I who can take up that mantle. Spreading awareness and being loud and honest about mental illness is more my thing. I do appreciate and understand your perspective, though. Thanks for the reply. :)

I am utterly despondent over this and I dearly wish someone could have gotten through to Etika before it was too late. Mental illness is one of the major silent killers of our generation, and we as a society need -- no, we -- to be better about confronting it honestly, directly, loudly, and without stigma, especially for groups that are particularly at-risk. Having personally suffered from severe depression throughout my life to the point of sometimes being a danger to myself (this isn't a cry for help; I've got things under control at present), it makes me sick to my very core to think of how horrifically lonely and hopeless Etika must have felt in his final moments. One of the very worst places you can ever be is trapped within the darkness of your own head, and I'm incredibly lucky I've had loved ones to help pull me out while they could still get through to me. I only wish Etika could have been as fortunate. Let me be as clear as fucking possible: Anyone who believes, or especially says, otherwise or that "it's all in your head, get over it" is an abject monster. There is no middle ground when it comes to mental illness. Rest in peace, Etika.

While I'm actually pretty intrigued by the idea of a true game sequel to FF VII that positions Genesis as the ultimate villain and have always held out a tiny bit of hope that such would be made someday, the actual teaser FMV was executed terribly. It was a terrible time to be a Blue Bomber fan, sure, but Seth deserved none of the absurd amount of shit he got and the Mega Man community made itself look incredibly bad, immature, and outright dumb as a result (at least back then; I'd like to think it's at least somewhat bounced back since). That's kind of the hardcore gaming community (or at least a vocal part of it)'s MO these days: exploding into extreme rage and harassing game industry folks (whether it's the "right" or wrong folks in each situation) when they don't get something they want, or do get something they don't want. :/

All true, but do you think Sakurai would even want to work with Square Enix again after how difficult and restrictive they were with Cloud (a whole two songs for Midgar, no FF or FF VII spirits or trophies beyond Cloud and AC Cloud, an apparently awful approval process, etc.)? Then again, he already has worked with them again through Hero, so perhaps the possibility of a third Square character (which I do think would have to be Sora if anyone) isn't off the table. I think the how on the table this possibility actually is will be influenced by the nature of Hero's presence in Smash. If it's barebones like Cloud, then I'd say Sora's chances are pretty bleak. But if DQ gets proper musical and spirit representation, then there may yet be some hope... But even if we're lucky enough for all of the above to work in Sora's favor, there's still the impossibly high hurdle of getting Disney to even play ball... but then again, if there's a single person in the world who could ever successfully negotiate Sora's inclusion with Disney, it's Sakurai. God, how hype that would be...

That said, even if Sora never happens (and he won't in all likelihood because of the Disney factor as well as Square Enix apparently being awful to work with), I could never, ever complain because a) Sakurai is a goddamn miracle worker whom we do not deserve and b) I already got my two other dream characters in Mega Man and Banjo-Kazooie. Thread I love talking shit online. Anyone else? (Not racism or personal based)
With friends, for sure. With randos? Never, because the purpose of shit-talking with strangers (at least based on what I've personally encountered) is to make the other person/team feel as terrible about themselves as possible because there's no accountability; after you log off, you'll probably never encounter that person again. Because of that, it's no longer about good-natured ribbing like it usually is with friends; it's about , and being mean isn't my jam. Video games are meant to be fun, not a breeding ground for meanness. I don't doubt that all of your shit-talking is "above the belt" (if "above-the-belt" shit-talking even exists) and not based in hate or racism, OP. Regardless, people like you are still one of the main reasons why I hardly ever play anything online with randos, and when I do, why muting voice chat is the very first thing I do if I'm playing a game that has it (which in itself is very rare for the above stated reasons). Nah. Video games are never worth hurting others or having to constantly ward off people trying to be horrible to you. I'd rather just play and have a good time, none of that other shit is necessary to me. Again, though, friends are a different story since the context is different and the shit-talking is being done with people you trust not to take it too far. There's enough anger and hate in the world already, OP, a great deal of it caused and instigated by the gaming community. Why would you or anyone ever choose to contribute to that? Over something as thoroughly meaningless (in the grand scheme of things) as ? Here's a thought: try being nice to strangers. Encourage them to get better instead of shaming them when they lose. Spread instead of meanness. It isn't hard. It really, really isn't.

But most importantly, this probably means we get more Zack and more of his backstory integrated into FFVII proper, and that’s a wonderful thing because Zack is one of FF’s best protagonists ever and way more interesting than Cloud (at least OG FFVII Cloud; remake Cloud seems like he’ll have a much more defined personality and, hopefully, more relatability accordingly). Absolutely not. The only way I'd even consider it is if there was a big-deal (and I mean BIG-DEAL) game for me ready at launch. Otherwise, I can totally wait for said game(s) to release before I pick up the console. I'm in no rush at all for the next generation, especially when current-generation games already look so incredible and we've been getting heavily diminishing returns from new generations of hardware for awhile now.

Thread Youtube Gaming Channels you Dropped : Why ?
And you never will. :) Thank you — it’s sad that we live in a time where anyone has to be proud of that, but that’s what I love most about our channel and our team and it isn’t even close. Cheers!

Thread I love Kirby!
Hell yeah OP, same here! Easily my favorite Nintendo character and it honestly isn't even close. Yoshi would be second, but a very, very distant second. Kirby is just that fucking great. I'm not even really talking about his games either, which are also mostly great and incredibly consistent, even if Star Allies was a significant step down from (IMO) a modern classic like Planet Robobot. Kirby himself, though? God-tier. Always has been, always will be.

Well... they left Mega Man untouched. On one hand, that's a little disappointing because I was hoping for at least some slight buffs after 3.0 hurt him so disproportionately much due to the game-wide changes made to projectile characteristics. On the other hand, I'm not a Pichu main. Seems pretty fair...
