I don't know if it's one of the best, but it's definitely one of the most unsettling games I've ever played. Any game that can affect me as much as Inside did is excellent in my book. it accomplishes that makes it even more impressive.

Thread Should I go from SMB3 to World, or from World to SMB3?
. Having gone through Galaxy, 3D World, Bowser's Fury, and Odyssey in quick succession, I'm thinking of taking a bit of a break from 3D Mario and playing through some of the older 2D ones to properly familiarize myself with the roots of the series, which I haven't had as much of a chance to do. The obvious contenders are SMB3 and SMW, both of which are thankfully available via NSO. I just don't know how to go about the pair, so I figured I'd turn to Era. I have two questions:

Thread RTTP: I was wrong about Super Mario Odyssey
October 2017- I play Super Mario Odyssey, I enjoy it, I recognize that it’s a very well-made, extremely polished platformer. I look at the 97 on Metacritic score though, and I go… Alright? Maybe I don’t “get it”? I’ve always enjoyed linear platformers more than sandbox ones, and I just figured that was what this was- that maybe I just didn’t get the appeal of Odyssey, that it was catering to a different audience. Jump forward to now, and like many others, I’ve been on a bit of Mario kick lately. Played half of Galaxy in December, finished 3D World and then Bowser’s Fury at launch, then went back to Galaxy and finished that as well. And given how much I’ve been enjoying playing Mario, I thought I would go back and give Odyssey another go. And oh boy. This time it clicked. Everything just fell into place. This shit is awesome. I’m in love with this game. There’s a lot that I want go through, so I’m gonna break it drown into a few categories. I enjoy linear platformers more than I enjoy sandbox ones, but holy crap, Odyssey brute forces its way through that personal preference on the back of its ridiculously expressive movement and platforming. The triple jump, the long jump, the backflip, the side somersault, the ground pound jump, the cap throw, the cap jump, the dive, there’s a ridiculous number of different moves that you can chain together almost endlessly under the right circumstances and get to even the remotest parts of the game’s worlds. I of course knew this on my first playthrough, but this time, I actually engaged with the moveset the way it was meant to be engaged with, and I it. I get now that Odyssey is built on two core pillars- the first is the moveset; and the second is your own curiosity, fueled by the part of you that keeps going “okay, but what’s over there?” It almost feels like during playtesting sessions, Nintendo would find ways to break the game, and the conversations after that would go something like this: A: “If you do a ground pound jump off this specific spot and then do a wall jump and then do a cap throw and then do a dive, you can reach the top of this pillar that you’re not supposed to reach.” B: “Alright, make the pillar taller I guess.” A: “Yeah, sure. Or maybe we could just put a Power Moon there?” No matter where you go, Mario Odyssey always rewards your curiosity, whether that’s with a Power Moon or a hidden platforming section or extra coins or even just an excellent spot to grab a snapshot with the awesome photo mode. The game rewards me with the mechanical perfection of its platforming, with the satisfaction of chaining together a bunch of moves and being able to reach an obscure spot, and then with actually finding something there. I’m having fun. And I love the purple coins. I love buying new outfits and souvenirs and stickers for the ship. It’s just cosmetic, but it’s so much fun. 3D Mario games usually struggle with what to do with their coins, and gold coins are still kinda whatever in Odyssey, but the purple coins are awesome. If I ever see one in the distance, I to have it, and I won’t stop till I’ve got my hands on it. Sort of goes hand in hand with Mario, doesn’t it? Even so, Odyssey goes above and beyond with this. Each kingdom has its own vibe, its own aesthetic, its own look, and I don’t dislike any of them. I like that there are sandboxes with less of a focus on platforming with a lot of room for exploration like Sand Kingdom or Lake Kingdom, and that there are much more platforming-focused worlds like Luncheon Kingdom or Bowser’s Castle, or worlds that are a cross between the two and have a ton of platforming-focused gameplay but also feel very open and let you explore as much as you want, like Metro Kingdom and Wooded Kingdom. And in typical Mario fashion, each world focuses on a handful of gimmicks and mechanics that are unique to them. Like Wooded Kingdom has the onions with the elongating legs, Bowser’s Castle has the wall pecking thingies, Sand Kingdom has a lot of Bullet Bill stuff going on. There are also certain mechanics that are only used once or twice in specific places and then never used again, like those statue things with the shades in the Sand Kingdom. I love stuff like that. Obviously, there’s variety on a micro level as well. You get Power Moons for . Regular platforming, sidescrolling sections, random ground pounds, jump rope challenges, doing a little dance in the Seaside Kingdom, racing with an RC car, playing beach volleyball, winning at slots. Mario Odyssey just keeps throwing one new idea after another at you, it’s just an endless barrage of delightful new ideas. Not all of them work, but the variety is excellent. And I get the criticism that the fact that you can get the Power Moons for literally anything sort of devalues them on the whole and disincentivizes the more challenging platforming-focused Moons- but again, the sheer of activities is incredibly impressive. And honestly, personally speaking, I haven’t had that issue. I loved interacting with different things and having the game actually respond to my actions in completely unique ways. Shit, I want the Power Moons. Massive understatement- this game looks great. Not just “good for a Switch game” great. It’s flat-out one of the better looking games of the last few years. There’s a vibrancy and charm to the art style obviously, and the aforementioned variety adds to the visual appeal as well, but even on a technical level, there’s just so much detail here. Like Mario getting sand on his clothes after rolling down a dune in the Sand Kingdom. And all the little flourishes and animations, like Mario doing a little dance every time he stands near a radio, or how he begins lounging on the ground if you don’t touch the controller for a while (and how a pigeon lands on his nose if you don’t touch it for even longer). And the music. Oh man, the music. Mario games always have great music, but this is just on another level. And sure, I can give several obvious examples, like , or , but you know what’s been stuck in my head for a week and refuses to go away? That freaking . It’s so good. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time my opinion of a game changed this quickly and this . Alongside Super Mario 3D World, this is probably now my joint-favourite Mario game now. Nintendo, gimme Odyssey 2. I’m taking a break from 3D Mario for a just a wee bit… but not from Mario. Moving on to Super Mario World next. Should I try out Sunshine after that? Hear mixed things about it, so not sure if I should give it a go.

Thread SPOILERS: The ending of Little Nightmares 2 is WILD. Let’s figure it out!
That's some really good stuff OP. I was actually thinking that Six might be The Lady herself with some time loop shenanigans, drawing a parallel between Mono and The Thin Man. There's just one little wrinkle with the prequel theory, that being the fact that Six and the origins of how she got her raincoat were explained in Very Little Nightmares, but with all the time loop stuff that's clearly going on, Tarsier might have some stuff up their sleeves to explain that. Either way, loved the ending, can't wait to see where this series goes from here.

Thread The Medium | Review Thread
Ours: Dual Reality is great, fixed cameras are awesome, storytelling is solid, and the music is great. But the game has some issues (a bit too short, not very challenging, zero combat feels like a missed opportunity) that hold it back. I enjoyed it overall, but I don't think it reaches its full potential. Still worth checking out, especially for fans of classic horror games, and especially since it's on Game Pass.

Thread I'm still confused about one part in God of War PS4 *SPOILERS*
Definitely. I mean, this is my understanding anyway, I could be very wrong. I think the GoW novel did mention that no matter how much Kratos tried, the Blades always found their way back to him (I think he tried dumping them in the ocean once or something, according to the book), which is why he just decided to bring them with him to Midgar. Again, I could be wrong, I'm not a 100% sure about any of this lol.

Thread Does Mass Effect have the best lore integration in a game?
Absolutely. The fact that characters can have long conversations on the genophage and its moral complexities and you can not only follow along, but have strong thoughts on who to side with in those debates tells you everything you need to know about how effectively and convincingly Mass Effect sells its lore- and that's just one of many, many examples. That's a completely optional additive that is by no means necessary to enjoy and understand the lore, or how excellently it's integrated in the story.

Thread LTTP: God Of War's multitude of problems, and where to go from here?
Depends on the game. There's no wholesale rulebook for "most important parts in a game." If it's a story focused game like GoW, story is importat. If it's a gameplay focused game like BotW, story is not important. It literally could not care less about having a story. Not the point.WhatYes.Are people still sticking to this foolish, tired old argument?

Thread LTTP: God Of War's multitude of problems, and where to go from here?
The game has excellent music. Not only does it have excellent music, it also makes use of its music incredibly well. It fits the desolate atmosphere of the world perfectly. No, it doesn't have a good story. But not every game needs to have a good story. Different games are good for different reasons because they focus on different things. I love games with great stories, but I also love games that don't have great stories that do other things really, really well. And how convenient is it that you'd criticize BotW for things "outside of exploration" when exploration is the whole point? Look, man, you can dislike any game you want, that's how opinions work. But when you start obsessing over your dislike for the game and come into completely unrelated threads and start saying things like "BotW is a bad game, that's a fact, no one can deny it" (when you're saying that while in the midst of talking to people who denying it), you just seem foolish. You don't have to justify your dislike for a game that a lot of other people like by trying to make them see the light.

Keep in mind that 3 will probably be harder to go back to if you try it out having played 4 and TLL, and contrary to what many on this forum would have you believe, it's a really good game that you should at least play once. It's not lightning in a bottle like 2 was when it first came out, but still really good. I'd say decide if you want to play it based on what you think of 2. If you really, really like it, then definitely do not skip 3.

Thread LTTP - Dragon Quest 8
I only recently got into Dragon Quest about a couple years ago. DQ11 was my first game in the series (unless you count Builders), and it was exactly the sort of RPG I love. I had, however, bought DQ8 nearly three years ago, a few months after it released on the 3DS, but though I had every intention of playing it, I just never got around to it. Recently, I’ve been in the mood of a long, sweeping JRPG (Xenoblade DE, I know, I’ll get to that too eventually). I was thinking of buying DQ11S and going through that game again, but then I figured I’d just play DQ8. My impressions so far are very positive (to put it mildly) but let's begin with some not-so-positive stuff first (that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the game itself): The moment I started playing it, I remembered why I had held off on giving it a go for so long- not because of the game, but because of the system I own it on. I’ve been playing DQ8 for over a week, and my hands have . The console is small (I have an OG 3DS and returning to it after so long feels weird) and having to move the camera with the shoulder buttons is literally painful (it doesn’t help that the L button on my 3DS doesn’t always work). Like DQ11 (which is the only watermark I have for DQ games right now), it never tries to reinvent the wheel, but it has a ridiculously expert understanding of the JRPG genre and what makes it tick. The combat is simple but addictive, and I really like the tension system. I especially love making use of it in conjunction with buffs and debuffs during boss fights; it allows me to actually strategize, and prevents battles from become the mindless “repeatedly press A to win” affair that turn-based battles can so easily become. Hell, I even love grinding (the sped up battles really help out on that front). I’m also really, really enjoying the story. It’s not taking itself too seriously, there’s plenty of room for levity, the characters are great, and I’m surprised at how engaging I’m finding it. I love the little lore drops here and there, whether that’s from NPCs or from reading books. I love what every character has to say. I love how the story tantalizingly hints at things to come but knows exactly when to stop and let the player hang (and for how long). I love how every new place I visit feels like it’s bursting with identity and charm. Pickham in particular was great, and Iarrived at Baccarat, where I imagine I’ll be spending a lot of time, thanks mostly to the casino (I ignored the casino in Pickham, because sketch). The towns don’t seem to have the grandeur and flair of the towns in DQ11 (which are flat-out the best towns I’ve ever seen in any game), but they’re still really good (and I’m hoping they’ll continue to get better as I make progress). I’m also really liking the more open world design of the game. Hunting for mini-medals is fun (not surprising, since that was one of my favourite things to do in 11), I love toying around with the alchemy pot, and even though the rewards I get from Cameron’s Codex have all sucked without exception, I still open up the challenges every time I enter a new region to see what’s next on the list. Outside of the open world, the dungeons have also been really good so far. The last couple of dungeons have been big and winding enough that exploring every cranny takes a while, and I'm hooked to finding every piece of treasure in every dungeon that I enter. One thing I’m finding a disappointing is how few party members there seem to be in the game. Since Angelo, there’s been no one, and having just four party members has left me yearning for many more (especially since I subconsciously keep comparing the game to 11, which had only about eighteen gajillion party members). So yep. 20 hours in, absolutely loving it, feels very much like DQ11 (or the other way around, which, from what I understand, was very much the point when SE were working on 11). TLDR: Shouldn’t have waited so long to play this gem, but glad I’m in it now, .

Thread PS5 price speculation
For the foreseeable future, Microsoft is going to be selling the XB1 family as an alternative to the XSX, since all their first party games will come out for current-gen consoles as well. That, combined with the fact that their primary goal is to get subscribers through Game Pass and xCloud rather than selling console units, means that they won't have too many issues with selling the Series X as a high-end console at higher prices. And there's also the high possibility of a Series S or whatever they choose to call it being a cheaper alternative down the road.

Recently played through it again, and yeah, it holds up. Can't wait to see how they expand on the outdoor environments in particular in the remake. I don't think that's his stance on remakes as a concept in general. That quote is talking strictly about FF7. He's saying they didn't want to do a remake that hewed too closely to the original and wanted to make something that adapts it, but does stuff very differently from the original game.

Thread Do you consider the Resident Evil remakes as entry replacements or new timeline?
Yeah, pretty much. The larger, most important story beats are more or less consistent across the originals and the remakes, and I don't think any of the larger additions in the remakes directly contradict anything from the originals. So yeah, they're more additive than they are replacements, I guess.

I think with all the streamlining they did and all the additions to the story they made with RE1 and 2 (and probably will be doing with RE3), it's clear that Capcom see them as replacements.

Thread So I’m now 40 hours in Witcher 3....
The combat gets much better if you engage with the supplementary systems, like concocting bombs and oils and potions and stuff and use that to your advantage. The problem is, you can easily get through the game without ever touching any of those systems (at least on Normal), which means the combat ends up being a shallow, button mash-y, hack-and-slash affair. And while it's fun in the initial hours, it's not fun enough for a game that's 80 hours long. Thankfully the game has plenty of other strengths that more than make up for that.

Thread The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Red Dead Redemption 2, which game is better at storytelling?
RDR2 easily. The Witcher 3 is one of the few games that can sort of come close to Red Dead 2's excellent storytelling, but there's still a huge gulf separating the two.Agreed, though I must say RDR2's side quests and questlines are significantly better than I expected them to be. Not all of them, and TW3 is still king in this area, but RDR2's got some pretty damn great questlines and quests that completely are skippable.

Not necessarily. Conservative recreations like Shadow of the Colossus or Spyro/Crash/Crash Team are still remakes, even though they don't make core mechanical changes. I think it's more a question of if the game is building everything from the ground up, or using older work as jumping-off point. Hard to say anymore though, when we've got, say, Activision calling the aforementioned Crash/Spyro/Crash Team remasters instead of remakes.

Very well written OP. Cool thread. Agree with pretty much everything you say on the story front, especially your comparison with BrBa (I'd also liken it to Boardwalk Empire in that regard). But Red Dead Redemption 2 is by no means "a terrible game". It's gameplay isn't exceptional as a package like its story is, but there's a lot of stuff that it does really, really well, some stuff that it does well enough, and – admittedly – some areas where it falters. It's an inconsistent but very well made game with a lot of interesting ideas even from a gameplay point of view. Terrible? Absolutely not.

That's not the only metric to judge a game's success. Buzzwords such as "player engagement" that annoy us so much now are actually very important, and Odyssey's got mad player engagement even a year out from launch. It's the fastest selling game in the series, and the highest selling current gen AC, not to mention Ubisoft projects it to become one of their highest selling AC games to date (maybe it already has hit that milestone). To suggest that AC hasn't had a spectacular recovery with Origins and Odyssey is highly inaccurate.

I think so, yes. I doubt it'll be the highest selling game in the series – that seems unlikely – but I think it'll end up at least matching D/P, if not exceeding (those did 18 million or so, right?). The Switch Lift™ will be more applicable here, I think, because this is an entirely new Pokemon generation, which Let's Go obviously wasn't. I mean, it still depends on how strong its sustained sales are, which will depend on reviews and post-launch word of mouth (and whether or not there's a new Pokemon game next year), but I think sales in the first year will be remarkably strong. Not to mention the fact that it's going to get the Switch Lite Lift™ as well. Plus there's that SwSh special edition Switch Lite, which will help in its own small way.

Thread It is time to be honest with ourselves, Assassin's Creed Odyssey is one of the best open world games of this generation
Well said. It's a shame it isn't widely considered among the best open world games of this generation, because that's exactly what it is. Also I really don't get the complaints about the bloat. There's a lot of shit in here, yeah, but it's all designed in such a way that you don't have to interact with any one pillar of the game to progress with the other. It's all completely independent, each of them is very well done, and you can basically engage with each however much you want to. I do understand that that's not true for side quests. Side quests are essentially as crucial as main quests for progression, especially in the late game, because the game's level curve is broken. But that never bothered me personally, because the side quests are awesome. Sure, a broken level system coupled with its XP boosters is a bit on the slimy side, no denying that. But at least if you don't want to pay up for the boosters and actually want to play to progress, you don't have to sit through shitty quests.

In simple terms, they own the assets, since they funded development (unless the contract between Platinum and Microsoft had clauses that specifically stated otherwise, but we don't know anything about that, obviously). Yep. Look at Hollow Knight as an example. A $15 game that is oozing quality in every nook and cranny and easily provides like 30-40 hours of top notch gameplay? Something like that is bound to have an impact on anybody's impressions of a game.

Part of the point of a review is to recommend buying/not buying a game. Sure, Hollow Knight is excellent enough to be an easy recommendation regardless of price, but all that stuff and quality for just $15? That makes it an infinitely recommendation.

God of War > Horizon: Zero Dawn > Uncharted 4 God of War does almost every single thing it attempts perfectly. I mean, not saying the game is without any flaws whatsoever, but compared to just how good the overall experience is, they're minuscule. Been a God of War fan since the early days, and I just love how they reimagined the series completely, while still somehow keeping the DNA intact. Also, a game hasn't made me this excited for its sequels in ages. Horizon is also one of my favourite games of all time (along with God of War). Incredible setting, beautiful visuals (one of the few games I've played that are almost equally impressive from an art and technical point of view), awesome combat, and quite possibly one of the best stories I've ever seen in a game. Uncharted 4 is Uncharted, but better than ever. So yeah.

RE7 felt very much like classic Resident Evil. Evoked RE1 heavily. The style of horror was slightly different, as you point out, but it was a reinvention of the series the way RE4 was- which, I believe, was the point all along, and exactly what Capcom had set out to do after what happened with RE6.Really? I'd be very surprised. It's clear RE7 is more of a setup for future RE games (in more ways than one) than anything else, and Capcom haven't really been silent on that front either. And why would they want to ignore the game that brought the franchise back on track?

If, for example, you play as Leon first, you can only unlock Claire B after finishing Leon A. And vice versa- you can only unlock Leon B after finishing Claire A. The A campaigns of both characters share plenty of similarities, especially in the earlier stages. The B campaigns for both offer much more variation. I don't want to say there are four completely different campaigns in the game, because that's overselling how different they are from each other, but there's enough variation to make sure that it rarely ever feels like a retread. I'd recommend doing A/B in whatever order you want, and then doing the reverse, because that way you get two complete and alternate takes on the story.

No.Not sure how detailed I can be with this answer, so I'll just say they begin in different places. He's stalking the location you're in for about an hour and a half to two hours in the campaign A. Don't wanna get into spoilers, but that section is where the "stalking" mechanic comes into play. It's much more prevalent in campaign B (about the first 2-3 hours). Even during the stalking sections, though, I personally loved it. I totally get where the worries about this are coming from, since such mechanics can be intrusive and get in the way of enjoyment, but I don't feel that happens here, because: - It's not like he's tailing you. A lot of the times he's hulking about the building, and only if he spots you, or hears you from close by, he becomes alerted to your presence. It's not constant. - When you do spot him, it's rarely ever a jump scare. If you want, you can always try to avoid him, and though it might now always be successful, it works well enough a lot of the times, so you don't feel completely powerless. - Planning your routes to try and avoid him as you try to get from point A to be is awesome, and by the time you do have to do it, you're familiar enough with the layout, so as far as I'm concerned, it actually added to the experience rather than taking away from it. - If he does corner you, running away and lying low for a couple minutes calms things down enough (though you might have to take a hit or two). - He doesn't interrupt puzzles, and, of course, you can always enter safe rooms to collect yourself. - If you do engage with him, you can fight him to stun him for long enough to run away and put distance between him and yourself. All that, and it just adds to the tension and atmosphere immensely. Everything to do with him, from the music to the sound effects associated with him, are some of the best horror I've ever seen in a game. It's far from cheap, it's far from annoying, and it's far from intrusive. That's just my take though.

One is a list for PS4 titles, one is a list for titles across all platforms. We wanted to recognize a PS4 exclusive for the best PS4 games list since it holds more value to the system, as a game that cannot be played anywhere else. That, of course, isn't something that we'd be doing if God of War wasn't good enough to deserve that recognition- it didn't just win best PS4 because it's an exclusive. It won best PS4 because it's an exclusive, and because it's one of the best games of the year (also #2 in our overall list). As I said in my previous message, God of War could have just as easily won GOTY on another day, it was a very close call, while Red Dead 2 could have just as easily won best PS4.

Since God of War is a PS4 exclusive (and a damn great game, which goes without saying), we thought it deserved more recognition in a list about the best PS4 games. You’ll notice something similar in the Xbox One list too (though I don’t think that’s up yet). That said, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the overall best game of the year in our opinion, which is why it walks away with the top honours on the whole. I’ll be honest and say one more thing though, when we get to the top of these lists, and have games of this caliber going up against each other, the exact placement at that point doesn't matter quite as much as the fact that they're all being recognized at the highest possible level. They’re two incredibly great games and it could have gone either way based on how some team members were feeling that day.

If a game is good, it can be as long as it wants. I get your criticism about God of War, I do agree that it could have been better paced if it were a little shorter. Maybe even Red Dead 2, especially the first half of chapter 5- but if in a 90 hour experience, 5 hours of it are a slog and the other 85 are top notch, I really don't mind the length. A good example this year is DQ11. Easily an 80 hour game, but so perfectly paced it didn't feel like 80 hours at all.

I don't mind it. There's progression even outside of WoL this way. I can definitely see why it's frustrating for some, but I like gradually filling out my roster bit by bit. maybe they could have given us the Melee roster to begin with instead of the 64 roster. I do agree that 8 is way too little.

I'd say hold off on the likes of The Witcher 3, Divinity 2, and Bloodborne until you've gotten back into the groove. Spidey would be the perfect "first" game. I'd say something like Uncharted 4 would work very well too, but Spidey is just good. Oh also, Wolfenstein 1 and 2 are brilliant, you should definitely consider those as well (but not over Doom, try having all three in your list :P ).

I mean, I still don't see what you mean about the charged heavy attack. I'm playing on normal, and I've actively tried to spam it on several occasions, and it never works. And of course it doesn't have the same depth in its moveset as Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. Those are character action games, their whole point is to have deep movesets that promote the kind of gameplay you're describing. That's what the entire genre is built around. The new God of War is an action RPG, comparing it to something like Devil May Cry really doesn't make sense. Extreme generlization with the ND comment. Games are very different other than on a superficial level. And that's the metric used to judge whether a game is being bold with its changes? It isn't being bold if people react well to the changes? I mean, come on...

Puzzles are actually quite different, in that God of War has actual puzzles (mini-puzzles, but puzzles nonetheless. Not just "grab plank and move it to that location".) The similarities between the two are very superficial. Have you played God of War yet? Because, pre-release, I felt it mimicked TLoU a bit too much as well, but having played it for 20 hours now, I can tell you that that couldn't be further from the truth.

It really, really isn't. Can't stress this enough. And you can still do that. That's because the system grows deeper as the game progresses. You unlock more moves and abilities, and stringing these together to perform actual visual combos (rather than just a bunch of numbers displayed on the screen) as satisfying as hell.

That's not what I'm saying at all.Because it's a departure for the series, not for video games as a medium. As another user said in this thread, I guess the core of the series' identity has always been brutal, satisfying, crunchy combat that's also very stylish and excellent to look at, and that much is still very much part of this game, if only in a very different way. Also, in spite of the change in camera, the series hasn't lost its jaw-dropping sense of scale and epic moments. That's why it's such a good reinvention, because in spite of all the changes, it doesn't alienate fans of the series.

I don't know, I guess I'm saying Super Mario 64 expanded the core idea of Mario games to almost unimaginable levels, but there was still plenty it had in common with its predecessor, even if most of that was, as you said, surface details. At the risk of repeating myself (again), God of War doesn't even have that much in terms of similarities with its predecessors. It's a completely new genre for the series.

I mean, if him being occasionally annoying due to excessive dialogue is a deal-breaker for you, then I don't know what to tell ya :P Also, the combat really is very much to the taste of one who might like character action games like DMC and Bayonetta. I mean, it's not combos and numbers based, but it rely on you stringing together combos (not just numbered combos). And it's brutal, stylish, and feels really satisfying. It's the game's biggest strength too. Based on what you like (judging from your posts), I'd say you should give it a go!

Like, even though there's no combo counter or numbers at the corner of the screen, it really does feel like a combo-based combat system when it gets going. In fact, stringing together different moves is probably my favourite thing in the entire game so far. And it's still very brutal and stylish, so in that at least it still feels very much like God of War. As for Atreus, the only times he's ever bothered me in the game is when he refuses to shut up at times. His presence in terms of gameplay has actually been more of a positive.

I mean, I'm not disagreeing that BotW was a very bold shift too. Three days ago I'd have argued that it's the boldest franchise reinvention ever. I'm just saying that it feels like a natural evolution of Zelda, even if a lot of the series' staples are missing or heavily altered. On the flipside, the new God of War is just a complete shift. Like, it has nothing in common with the older games. In Breath of the Wild, you could argue that the shrines are, in some way, a replacement for dungeons, even that the Divine Beasts, but there is nothing in God of War that you can point at and say it evolves from anything in the past games.

A couple of them have been actually, truly challenging, and thrillingly so, and beating these was exhilaratingly satisfying. One story related boss fight had some pretty cool scripted action moments, which is all I can say without veering into spoiler territory. They're not massive in scale (so far at least), but they've been amazing so far. They're actual boss fights, as opposed to the ones in the previous games, which were more cinematic set pieces.

I'm around 15 hours into God of War and I have to say, this is a much bolder re-imagining for an established franchise than I have ever seen in this industry, personally. Games like Breath of the Wild, Resident Evil 4 (or 7) and the like were huge changes for their respective franchises, but even though they were radically different from their predecessors, there was still quite a lot that they retained, not just in terms of nebulous concepts like the "feel" and "atmosphere", but also specific gameplay mechanics or design philosophies. This new God of War, though, is just different from the Greek era games. I mean, it still feels like a God of War game thanks to its tone, Kratos, and the general nebulous "feel" of the experience, but in almost every way that can be put down on paper, this is nothing like the previous GoW games. The only similarities I've been able to spot are very minor things- like repeatedly pressing O to lift heavy objects at times, or pulling levers and stuff, or spike hazards in the environments, or upgrading your health meter via collectibles. And it all just works so well- most, if not all, of these changes are for the better, I'd say. Probably for the first time ever, I'm having as much fun God of War as I am gawking at the scope and spectacle (if not more so). Even if this massive re-imagining hadn't worked out, I'd say SSM would still deserve props for the huge risk they've taken. Good thing it paid off though, because so far this is one hell of a game, and if the rest of it is as good as it has been up until now (or gets better, like I suspect it will), it might end up becoming one of my favourite games of all time. A lot of you seem to be misunderstanding (I guess I wasn't clear about what I was trying to say), but I'm not saying this is a completely new way to play games. Not even close. It borrows heavily from other genres, even other Sony first party titles, as many of you have pointed out.

I just heard about a rapper, , who has an uncommon mix of singing talent, catchy hooks, and vulgar-trolling rap style (a la Odd Future). And a cursory search through ERA didn't show anybody notice her track from roughly one month ago, "Nintendhoe," which uses the GameCube loading sound effects as its hook. The song is mostly made of video game references, which range from "just trying to rhyme" to "lol pretty clever." Includes an SSX character name-check, a rhyme about trapping and killing her Sims, and a hard diss on Smash Kirby mains. Might not be your genre/style cup of tea, but I always think it's interesting to see examples of pop songs with tons of game references beyond, like, nerdcore rap or game OST cover bands. Still rare beyond, say, a single rhyme in a whole song. NSFW, because its "album" cover is a naked drawing of Princess Peach and half of the song is about engaging in sexual intercourse.

Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot.
