Thread Best Modern Isometric cRPG?
I honestly look at the list in the OP and think man, you can't really go wrong. But I'm biased. What a great selection of games. Pathfinder is a bit less polished than the others but ostensibly more ambitious. I haven't played Shadowrun though. If I had to pick, gun to my head, it would be Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Thread Biggest regret buying console or portable hardware?
A non-standard answer, but for me, it's a gaming laptop i purchased around 2012. On paper it seemed like a smart idea but after a while it was just too big, too hot, couldn't really tweak the hardware inside other than a RAM bump. I've learned that I personally much prefer a desktop I can tinker around in and have full control over. They seem better now in general but I still am biased against them. My conventional answer is something like Wii U.

I have enjoyed my time with it, more than I expected to. I acclimated to how it feels a bit more stiff than the more recent games pretty easily. I like how (relatively) low key it is, so far anyway, though I'm near the end. I'm critical of it in certain ways but I'm still very glad I've taken the time to play it.

I love my old standby wired G502, but it seems like right now for whatever reason Logitech mice are a gamble.

I more or less agree. The first 3 or 4 NCR quests feel like trying to shoehorn an FPS campaign into an RPG (not to mention one on such a rickety foundation in the first place), and at least twice has you play as non-Courier characters that I couldn't care less about. Calling in air strikes and driving a tank like this is Battlefield. I hadn't even made it to the yet which is apparently also clumsily done. I enjoyed myself the most when the game's story and writing just shut up and I was out just exploring places. There are some nuggets of decent to good stuff to find but mired in and around so much stuff that's stupid at best and disgusting at worst.

Put another short evening into this. Haven't touched main story stuff, just exploring. Well, I did find the Crusaders, which I suppose is a story branch. No crashes today, and no serious bugs (mostly just animation related oddities). Did a few more sidequests, and it's a mixed bag. I met Jolene and her starting quest was pretty cool, and even had the other characters chime in in a specific way. I also met the COS, which I could then bring up to the Crusaders, always cool to see those optional dialogue flags. I also did the miner revolt quest, but some of the parts of it seem to have crossed wires, I helped the miners and now I get yelled at by them. I never met one of the characters in a tied side-quest, so maybe that's playing a role. Reloaded a save and will let it sit for now. Enjoying myself way more now that I'm avoiding mainline NCR story bits, lol. Edit: Oh, also there is some dialogue when you take certain characters to certain places, like taking America to Junkflea. I've also gotten a few pop-up dialogues with Wrench, once for her disagreeing with my generosity, another for joining the Crusaders. So it's cool to see that sort of stuff implemented.

I guess I'll throw in some of my weekend opinions. I've been playing for about 25 hours and I've still got a bit more of the map to uncover. I've really not liked the story missions and I think the voice acting is probably the worst of the major conversion mods I've played, but it's hard to dwell on that too much when it's made as a fan project. The tank mission sucked. That was not fun. The vertibird gun sections are boring too. On a more positive note, the map itself is really dense and there are quests everywhere. The whole mod is a bit combat-heavy though. I'm constantly going through ammo and buying out all the stock. There are a shitton of references everywhere. And even Fallout 1/2 music in places. The most impressive thing is just how expansive it is. The exact opposite of New California where most of the buildings were empty and there was little to find off the beaten path.

Man I want don't want to be too critical of a hobbyist endeavor made in years of people's free time, but the first main quest where you head to the bridge and the one following that are just incredibly bad. Maybe it could be because I started at the lowest level, but it feels like CoD design shoved into a Fallout game. LUCKILY I've just been exploring the map and questing since and have been having a much better time. Found a couple of companions and lots of cool locations with much better designed sidequests.

Thread If a game has a true/secret ending do you try to get it?
It's a bit irrational, but sometimes just the idea of there being a "true ending" at all turns me off a bit. It often feels very implemented in a very mechanical and "game-y" way, turns the experience into some sort of rubric you have to adhere to in order to receive the intended narrative. I know that's not always the case though. It really depends on how I feel about the game and the requirements for the ending upon completion.

Thread I’m sick of silent protagonist how about you?
Depends on the game for me. A third person party-based RPG like Dragon Quest? I think a voice would go a long way, especially when everyone else has to talk around the protagonist anyway, who is implied to speak but simply doesn't. Contrary to the last line you have in the OP, I feel like primarily first-person games (or isometric RPGs) with dialogue options don't really need a voice. I don't think it added much to Fallout 4, and I don't think I personally lose much by reading a choice, selecting it, and then not having it read back to me.

Implement all of these ideas and you'll have boring lists where you end up with nearly everything on a single normal-mode playthrough. At that point why even care about a badge on your platform UI? Only really agree on luck ones, bugged ones (obviously), and *maybe* missables but that kinda depends on the context of the missable.

It's really hard to place myself in the mindset of the time and try not to be cynical with hindsight, now obviously aware of the twist for 15+ years. But yes, I think it's great. I the combat and there are so many wonderful nostalgic moments like seeing Aerith's house for the first time. I'm even open minded (though not totally on board quite yet) about the liberties in terms of story direction. But I just felt like it was being pulled from set piece to set piece with bogged down train graveyards, robot hands, and sewer chases in between. After naturally putting it down upon finishing, I find myself just not thinking about the game a whole lot. It was fine. It'll probably be in my personal top ten for the year, but not sure on top five.

Super is back to hit or miss with some very weird oddities that you'd think Funimation wouldn't still be incorporating (some weird jokes and clear errors). Thread Is Dark Souls a JRPG?
I always lean yes to this question mainly because 'RPG' in itself is a loosely defined, nebulous genre and by layering another loosely-defined, nebulous archetype on top of that turns a vague-but-useful genre tag into a near-meaningless one. If you simply specify the country of origin as the qualifier, you've at least removed one degree of freedom, and deconvoluted the picture to some extent. You make at least one component of the definition more well-defined. But even this mindset becomes compromised as games become global products. So there's no right answer really.

I wasn't originally even planning on reviewing it but found myself desperate to write about it once I had finished. It's good! It also has some real bite to it if you play with some of the hard mode options (Medals you can equip). It has some real strategy, a simple but well-told story with lots of neat character moments, numerous interesting side objectives, and a lovely soundtrack that's far better than it has any right to be. It really is the complete package.

Thread Phantasy Star Online 2 is out on Microsoft Store
Luckily I've avoided any of the catastrophic headaches being reported. Minor (relative) issues were that I could seemingly only install it on my C drive, and if I want to use anything underneath PSO2 (like Discord, etc), I have to run that as an Admin. Probably won't get to put too much time into it until after Xenoblade though.

Praise itself, not really (maybe in some cases where the source is extremely obnoxious or condescending alongside.) Only when it crosses over into a weird sort of evangelism is when I can get bugged by it.

Thread What kind of geek are you within gaming? - VGM Nerd? Graphic Enthusiast? Fighter Fan? Etc.
I'm definitely a systems nerd. How are resources managed and rewarded? What is the primary gameplay mechanic, and how does it notch into longer-term/ progression mechanics? How much say () does the player get in their approach, either to a given encounter/battle, or more broadly the how the game itself unfolds. Is the game just a straightfoward treadmill testing the player's ability to execute specific tasks in a specific order, or does it expect them to find their own footing more emergently and execution is secondary? Once these are all identified, does it work? Is it overly convenient to the point of not feeling meaningful? Or overly limiting/punishing to no longer be enjoyable? It's a bit dry, admittedly, but it tends to be always how I think about games.

Xenoblade is a better, more complete game, not in the sense that Remake will be followed up on, but more that I feel that the sum of Xenoblade's parts is more wholly engaging/interesting than the sum of Remake's. Remake does however have significantly better combat (easily) and spectacle (but it's close).

As a twin, I always relate to well-made twin relationships. Unfortunately, they are very easy to also make paper-thin and super tropey. I enjoyed Rubedo/Albedo's dynamic, especially in Xenosaga 2. And secondly, Serena and Veronica in DQ11. This exchange is pretty emblematic of what I enjoy about them, and then Serena's development near the end of Act 2 is something special.

My parents both had decent salaries but were absolutely stupid with money. Thread Hey Era, I need some advice regarding FFVII (original) and the new remake
Trying to be as vague as possible to answer the question while also avoiding outright spoilers. I think the absolute best way would be to finish FFVII yourself if you at all can manage. A lot of the story elements OG VII require learning about specific events, and then recontextualizing those same events when new information is made known. A video can suffice, sure, but I think the impact of those revelations will be lost. And then the remake will (very slight/vague remake premise spoiler)

This seems to be the consensus, yea, and they ARE cool to look at. But shuffling all my units forward, ending turn, shuffling them again, ending turn, capturing a keep to finally get the next wave proc'd and then adjust course and shuffle them forward again....I think it could be cleaner and more interesting with smaller more deliberate and bespoke maps for each "substory" within a chapter.

Thread [Famitsu Survey] Top 5 Fire Emblem games by japanese Fire Emblem fans
Seems like a really strong list. I will never enjoy FE4 as much as the general consensus though, those big open maps are a spectacle but ala chore to shuffle your units through from keep to keep. It is something I think a remake could easily tidy up by subdividing the chapters up and bolstering out the story beats while making the chapter progression a little leaner but longer. Also, F for Tellius / Kita fans.

Thread Is Kingdom Hearts the most willfully obtuse video game narrative?
My opinion is that the end result of having visually-identical-but-disparate characters, characters who share names (or adopt other names), having the same character exist in two places at once with different personalities thanks to time travel, all that convoluted stuff, it's all the result of writing intrigue for intrigue's sake and rarely having any place meaningful in mind to eventually land with it when it comes to resolving them. It provides several servings of speculation per entry though, which can be communally enjoyable.

I've been replaying X recently, and I really feel for the actors, having to awkwardly squeeze lines into tight windows or attempt to match weird lip flaps. It comes across very stilted at times, but then you hear Hedy Burress's performance when narrating 'Yuna's Sphere' and she does an absolutely wonderful job when not bound by those constraints. And Matt Mckenzie makes it work in nearly every scene Auron's in.

I really like Xenoblade's dub, and I still mostly like Xenoblade 2's, even if it's not as strong. I think the NoE work really kinda gives that series a unique identity with its voice acting and while it wasn't wholly consistent, I liked the use of regional accents with the different countries/ Torna in 2. It's nice hearing a different suite of actors (and some of them are really great, like Adam Howden).

I wouldn't call it a mess, it's a lot better than it was 3 or so years ago when you had to get really fiddly with windows' global HDR setting before launching any game or diving into monitor specific settings etc (at least in my experience). Many more recent games (Ubi titles seems to handle it well) have it implemented a lot more smoothly. It's definitely not in a great place though. Still waiting on that Ori 2 HDR PC update..

They are out of PS4 in Japan and Sony brought them to China and Korea afaik. Nothing's been announced as for localizing them. This frustrates me too. I'm not sure how many hands you'd need to count how often this occurs. My friends kinda joke and call them "Not So Fast!" moments when an NPC or former party member is reintroduced to save the day. The idea is not a bad one necessarily, but it's so mind-numbingly, frustratingly common and reused. I would say the first big spot that I would kick back and "grind" for fun would be the Mihen Highroad, after Luca, or a little later in the Moonflow area when you get your last party member. Lots of strong monsters worth good EXP and items. Calm Lands also good. I don't really remember Defender X being that big of a block, but he's in front of a couple of difficulty spikes as it is. You were probably just a bit low leveled. On the regular sphere grid, it's not really too possible to 'mess up' because most of them are actually very linear, with only short branches off of their main path. Only Kimahri really has a lot of option in where to go, and seems to end up a bit underpowered no matter what. IIRC, I think I generally try to have him head towards Auron's section of the grid. I personally think FFX-2 is a must play if you enjoyed X's narrative, story, themes, etc. But it plays (and sounds) quite a bit different.

Some screens here too I know this is PS4 vs PC and not specifically mobile but just talking about changes to the remastered version. You can sprint now in addition to timeshift, and enemy aggro works a bit differently (so you can't really gather up 100 sandowrms like before).

Thread LTTP -- Pathfinder: Kingmaker Enhanced Edition
It's a dense and massive game. Expect to sink 100+ hours into it if you stick with it. I guess my main general piece of advice is to not fret about the timers too much...yes I know they can be anxiety-inducing but they are usually extremely lenient. With only a few exceptions: -Whenever you get a Bald Hilltop event, make sure you're ready to head there asap. -This is like 50 hours in but in Act IV, it's generally recommended to do Hour of Rage (Barbarians) before Betrayer's Flight. And try to find Armag's Tomb asap. And if you want to gather Relics and Artifacts, this communal Google Doc is pretty good. Just strike out when you pick one up. Try to do Companion quests whenever you can as well. Set the Kingdom related difficulties to easy, but I wouldn't automate it. The balance is a bit off, but it has some interesting ideas. Buying gear is not that important for the lion's share of the game, don't be afraid to dump gold (regular money) into Build Points ("kingdom money"). Make sure to buy any Bags of Holding you see though. The key difference is that it's not Turn Based. It's RTWP. It also has a big city/kingdom building element. Edit: I haven't tried the turn based mod. I think it has some really neat character writing and the premise of main conflict is pretty unique. And while the Companion quests are pretty plainly signposted, they are pretty varied and several of them strongly incorporate into the main story in interesting ways (especially Tristian, Amiri, and Linzi). A lot of the story-telling is a bit political (as in power struggles between nations, free cities, etc..) though and some of the plotlines are a bit flat (Valerie). But you have like 13 companions, each with 3 or 4 part personal quests, and I think the majority of them are really neat.

Yea, I was taking stock of the three sword campaigns that I've completed so far and I was kinda surprised to see that Saladin was (iirc) the only one from the original release & expansion that was 3-swords. From what I can tell, a single tricky map is enough to push a campaign to be considered 3-sword (Dracula's 3rd map, Prithviraj's 2nd), but I'm not sure which Saladin outing would have warranted it. I finished Pachacuti this weekend and it's probably the most cohesive throughline of the "new" campaigns so far. Both in terms of the connective cinematics and the map progression itself. I did also do the Dos Pilas historical battle with the Mayans and I think of the American civilizations, my order goes from Mayan > Aztec > Inca from favorite to least favorite.

"Good jobs pay at least a metropolitan area’s median annual earnings for full-time, year-round sub-baccalaureate workers and provide employer-sponsored health insurance. Setting the pay threshold in this way ensures that it reflects variations in pay and costs of living across metropolitan areas. This threshold ranges from a low of $13.78 an hour, or about $28,660 per year, in the McAllen, Texas metropolitan area to a high of $22.46 per hour, or about $46,710 per year, in the San Francisco, Calif. metropolitan area. Thread Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition |OT| Castle Doctrine
I've played through all AoE and The Conquerors, and now I'm on The Forgotten Campaigns. I'm dumping so much time into this game and now I have like a dozen campaigns in front of me that are all "new" to me. It's like I got a sequel to one of my favorite games from childhood, simply because I didn't keep up with the expansions since 2013. I've made my way most of the way through The Forgotten now. Finished Alaric, Dracula, Bari, Sforza, and now I'm on Prithviraj. Alaric - a pretty fun campaign, especially since you can't build walls, which I tend to rely on a lot. Felt good to basically ransack Rome a few times over. Dracula - the first three missions here were pretty nice, and the third especially was a real challenge, essentially a 5v1. However, 4 and 5 felt oddly designed, 5 I barely had to do anything except wait out the timer. Bari - I honestly remember very little about this campaign even though I just played it. The last scenario was pretty neat. Sforza is okay but the story here felt really weak and I'm not really feeling the Italian civ, though I do like the crossbowmen. Prithviraj 2 was difficult for me but only because I didn't rush the nearby town centers as quickly as I should have --- I just spammed camels once I realized that they get a building attack bonus for India. Edit: The Indian building style is neat too.

I think genre discussion can be a good heuristic for categorizing games into loose buckets, so that players can be made aware of other games they might enjoy, or selecting two titles that can then be compared on more even grounds, either qualitatively or more critically. I do think some (too many) people treat the idea of genres as some sort of robust algorithm, a strict rubric which takes any specific combination of factors and invariably decides what label to print out, which I firmly believe doesn't practically exist.

Thread About 7 years later, what was/is your opinion on Guild Wars 2?
I think that the game was at its best around the Heart of Thorns days (first expansion) and the year or so following it. They finally added some dedicating healing and tank roles, and regular raid content that puts the current pace to shame. Interesting new and challenging fractal content as well, and Even the open world maps were well designed for a theme park MMO. the fact that you can count on those HoT maps filling up with players eager to do 2015 content to this day is a testament to their design. Unfortunately this seems like it wasn't popular among the casual fans, who mostly just wanted story content. More of the fanbase seems to enjoy the second expansion more which doubled down on this but I just feel it had no staying power beyond the new classes. Even after buffing up the events and rewards, I feel like most of that stuff is barely touched. Raid updates are a once a year thing now which is sad. If this came with a trade-off of more instanced dungeon or fractal content to balance it out more I would be jived with it more, but it just didn't. I still play regularly mainly because it doesn't take too much of a commitment, but I don't enjoy the game as much now as I did 3, 4 years ago. Really hoping the new season breaks from the routine that's been in place far too long.

Excel has a lot of ways where you can work on making it as un-repetitive as possible. Repeating a certain operation over and over again? Learn how to macro it to a button click. Hate having to rechart data in the same way over and over? Figure out your indexs and vlookups and pivot tables and all that. Once you get basic formulas down you can learn how to hook into something like running a script from windows task scheduler so stuff is done automatically without your input at all. I guess to generalize a bit, Excel has a lot of tools to avoid having to be repetitive, and maybe figuring how to do as little actual busy-work as possible can be an angle you approach it from.

Baldur's Gate will be more in line with Pathfinder: Kingmaker , in terms of RTWP, classes, spellbooks, map design, etc. It will definitely fit the "dnd gameplay" more, obviously. But Divinity OS2 is a much better game than BG1, imo. I definitely enjoyed it more than I was expecting to. Favorite aspect of it is how it incorporates the party members into the various questlines. They always have something to say, are shifting or bypassing dialogue checks, expanding on the lore of the game. Like did you know if you wait until you have Aphra before you do Kurt's first companion quest, she can handle the investigative part at the morgue on her own? I'm guessing very few people see that interaction because you can do the quest way before getting her, but that permutation was accounted for anyway. Same with finishing Vasco's questline once De Sardet learns about their Now it's not like there was an especially arduous skill-check there, but there's some really neat flavor and places where characters are involved when it makes sense. For instance, Aphra has medical training so of course she has thoughts there. Siora chimes in whenever magic in involved, etc.

Thread GreedFall |OT| Bio Where? Bio Here.
I saw this posted and have mixed thoughts on it. Heather does have a point about how wanting to placate all parties can be seen as enabling. And, yea, getting "friendly" with every faction is framed as desirable through Greedfall's Reputation system -- you are explicitly rewarded for it. But the two most 'villainous' factions of the game (Theleme and Bridge Alliance) tackle their viewpoints through their respective questlines. Maybe you play through those and still don't think it does 'enough'. That would be fair. But Looking for that condemnating shakeup and transformative action in the first quarter of the game seems to be jumping the gun, to me. I saw someone else phrase it this way which I think is appropriate and echos my thoughts at the moment: 'there's still half a scale of measures of extremes between "glorifies" and "doesn't construct itself wholly around the condemnation of" '

By the end of the game (being exhaustive in terms of quests and exploration) I was right around level 40. Companion characters "max out" in terms of learning new talents at 33. I'm not sure if there is an explicit cap, but you won't easily reach it. By the late 30s you pretty much have every useful unlock for your build and are just filling in nodes at that point.

For those with stuttering issues on PC, the note I was given with the review copy was basically to make sure the in game v sync setting was set to On if you were playing in borderless fullscreen. I ended up just switching to Fullscreen and had no problems after, but theoretically Borderless + Vsync on should work. They said it was going to be addressed in a patch. A quick and dirty benchmark: I played at max settings 4k on a 2080TI/9900k-at-5Ghz, averaging something like 55 fps. 70 and up in indoor areas, down to high 40s a the most intense outdoor areas. Turning down shadows or sliding the dynamic resolution down a tad were both quick ways to gain some easy frame back.

FFX didn't also gatekeep how far on the spheregrid you could travel on any given 'chapter', nor lock you into pre-determined party setups until 25 hours into the game. Yes, the game was linear, but it did have other (admittedly small, but present) opportunities to allow people to dig into the game horizontally, so to speak. Especially on the Expert Sphere Grid.

Some of my favorite games experiences in RPGs like Skyrim, Deus Ex, and VTMB and immersive sims or fringe games like Dishonored/Prey are first-person, so I personally see this news and I'm like "makes sense". Edit: I understand that Bethesda titles and VTMB can be both. Just self-reflecting that I've always generally thought of them as first-person games without hesitation. I read through threads like this and I wonder if I'm in more of a minority than I realize. Bloodlines 2 is in a similar place where they've stated it will have third-person moments. I guess I don't see the logic that 'RPG' and first-person perspective are somehow inherently incompatible. Edit: I also didn't even think of blobbers or games like Bards Tale IV.

As someone who saw the full demo at E3, my initial off-the-cuff take is that this editing is too heavily focused on combat. It would have been nice to see a full dialogue tree play out, some vehicle traversal (outside of some quick contextless motorcycle edits), visting the shop to see the gear/stat options and cosmetic changes (again, outside of just a quick shot of Male V looking in a mirror), etc.

In general I really like it. Thread Rank the Fire Emblem games you've played!
Gonna hold off on Three Houses until some of the newness wears off. 1.) Path of Radiance - What a tidy game. Great characters, good story with a fair amount of intrigue (kinda bolstered a bit by intentional loose ends), solid map design, good art, great music. Streamlined in the best possible way. The best example of classic chapter-to-chapter FE progression IMO. Best supports, best worldbuilding, felt like the first game in the series for me where the extended cast was made important through Base conversations and story interactions, etc. 2.) Genealogy of the Holy War - I like this for a lot of the same reasons that I enjoy Path of Radiance, but the large map sizes and multiple objectives per chapter fell out of favor with me pretty quickly. I felt like a much better experience could have been crafted if there were bespoke dividing points between some of the keep captures, instead of the map just going on for another 5 waves of red units. Mostly a nitpick though, but still holds it off from being number 1. The two generations and the mechanics related to that bring about a ton of replay value. 3-4.) Binding Blade / Blazing Sword - Its hard for me to really distinguish between these two, I feel like a lot of their strengths and weaknesses are common between them. Simple-but-interesting stories, lots of neat characters but many rarely speak after recruiting them, which is a bummer because a lot of them have a lot of personalities and unique Supports if you manage to unlock them. Roy's story is a bit more difficult than Eliwoods, but the way the story branches makes it more interesting on replays (where in my mind, once you get access to Hector's mode on Blazing Sword, there's no real reason to ever go back.) Still arguably the best looking games in the series too. 5.) Radiant Dawn - I'm still really fond of this game, being a follow-up to PoR, but there's a lot I dislike about it. The loss of bespoke Supports was , a lot of shifting perspectives without a lot of payoff, the introduction of the third class tier felt pointless the way the scaling worked. Tons of characters but so many had such limited availability that despite the raw size of the cast, I'd find myself using the same handful of units because the alternative is to baby underpowered Dawn Brigade units or shoehorning in late Act 3 characters. Still an excellent world and story and a lot of neat payoff plot-wise, just way less fun to actually play. 6.) Sacred Stones - Felt like FE for middle schoolers. A very awkwardly divided world where you go from country to country in sequence to fight an obviously evil court of bad dudes without anything interesting happening. Would have been a great romhack, but otherwise unremarkable in pretty much every facet.

After listening to some of Josh Sawyer's post-mortem on Deadfire, and replaying Baldur's Gate I and II. At the same time though, I'm still absolutely floored by how much voiced dialogue there is in Guild Wars 2, to build off of the OPs paragraph on MMOs. I really think it's a strength of the game in that instance.

Thread Why is Cyberpunk 2077 being described as "open world action-adventure title" and not "open world RPG" ?
The whole "every game is an RPG anyways", while not completely false, seems like the sort of thought-terminating cliched platitude that doesn't really do anything other than stifle discussion. Cyberpunk 2077 has a character sheet with 5 stats like Body, Intelligence, "Cool", etc. These branch out into skills like Athletics and Hacking. In the demo we saw, the netrunner character without enough Athletics (less than 8) wasn't able to breach through a door to find a shortcut into a main atrium-like area, so instead had to hack into a computer to disable cameras and things like that. We saw someone visit a shop with different jackets and tshirts with different stats on them. There's also the Street Cred system which I don't think we've seen much about, mostly just told. Each character, including NPCs, has an integer level next to their name: IIRC, Placide is level 40. I haven't even brushed up on the sorts of things we saw relating to RPG mechanics with the Ripperdoc modding we saw last year. You can have discussions about whether the genre or term "RPG" means much anymore, sure. But Cyberpunk is going to have more than just a couple talent trees and perks based on what they've shown so far. I wouldn't hesitate to call it an RPG at all, and the developers still do too. In my opinion, everything in the OP is for marketing to a wider audience (as many have also already stated).

Thread Anybody else here can't enjoy difficulty in games anymore?
For me it depends on the game. I loved challenging myself through the Apocalyptic difficulty on Darksiders 3, for instance and that was before the combat style change updates that made it more forgiving. I also enjoyed plaything through some of the recent single-player FPS on the hardest difficulties too (not Wolfenstein II though, that damned courtroom..) When I was playing Pillars of Eternity II, I ended up turning the difficulty down just because of the sheer number of encounters and I would just rest between each major fight so that I could cast my best spells etc. It just felt tedious moreso than rewarding.

I'm personally more than fine with how the game looks. Obsidian was never going to jump from isometric to AAA world-beaters. And I think the art direction is pretty good. A graphical note though. Seems like out in the field NPCs will have a slightly less detailed model, and then this is swapped with high-quality one once you engage in conversation with them. Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me. Like this part in GI's footage.

Thread Haitian guy excited about Cyberpunk 2077 representation of his people
From the gameplay demo I saw, the Voodoo Boys and Placide are treated as cunning and cautious, and definitely have more clout than V does at that point in the story. The only thing I thought was maybe a bit overt was how the thick accents were 100% reflected in the subtitles, -- single spoken "they" and "them" is written "dey" and "dem", (with a few transition words omitted from the occasional sentence to sentence to make them seem just a notch more exotic). Even when the auto-translator mod that the demo showcased translated to English, it still wrote out the text this way IIRC. I feel like maybe they should have just left the subtitles as is in unaltered english and maybe let the accents and voiceover speak (literally) for itself? I'm not sure what was gained by writing the subtitles so phonetically precisely...you wouldn't quote a person with an accent like that.

Sadly, it still cost like 1000 dollars with insurance, which is a story in its own right... Thread Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire - Review Thread
I reviewed it here I thought it was really great. Obviously, my fuller thoughts are in the full text but here's my stream of thoughts after finishing it this weekend. All just my current opinions: + I love how deliberately it leans into the whole pirate aesthetic. It gives the game kinda an identity that the first lacked in a way. + The game is a joy to play. All of the mechanics tie together in a very tidy fashion that's incredibly satisfying. From gear to skills to the party assisting on passive abilities to learning a new tidbit about a quest you undertook or watching as different questlines coalesce into a single goal before diverging again. And I'm omitting lots of little neat things like Soulbound gear, multiclassing, sidekick characters. Nothing really feels extraneous which is quite a feat considering how there is. + The callbacks to Pillars 1 are done in a way that walks the line pretty deftly. They are meaningful and numerous enough to feel impactful without drowning out the new location or making me wish I had played it more recently. + I love the tooltip mouseover brought over from Tyranny. It's a bigger boon than it seems on paper. Being able to slowly piece together characters and histories and allows the narrative to unfold in a way while avoiding "my father, the king" sort of exposition. +/- Companion stuff is pretty bog standard. Each has a quest, they might give you something at the end if you're nice enough to them. Serafens gives a really nice hat. You can bang. It's not bad, necessarily, just kinda well traveled at this point. Their passive dialogue and VAs are general writing are great though. - The factions are a little bog standard as well. One will want you to free slaves, another not so much. One will want you to restore an old temple, another destroy it. Etc. - The UI was a bit buggy for me. A few times I had to double or triple click to get a spell or action to properly engage. My game crashed twice in ~45 hours. There's also cool little level of detail things like the triumph flags you gather from ships you board and take over showing up on yours when you dock it in the harbor. Neat stuff.

Thread Era, recommend me a MMORPG
Been reading through this thread and I'm thinking I might pick up ESO at some point soon. I play a lot of GW2, and I do want to emphasize that there is much more of a trinity now than there was at launch, certain elite classes introduced in the expansions are clearly designed to be more suited to healing (druid, firebrand, tempest, etc) or tanking (chronomancer, firebrand) and then of course dps with certain classes being well suited to power damage and others for conditions/DoTs. It still definitely has a relatively light endgame, but its way better than it was 2012-2014. Unfortunately in the free portion of the game you wont see that though. One thing that surprised me about gw2 is the sheer volume of voice acting compared to what I played of FFXIV. There's so much ambient dialogue on top of all the story scenes and it really helps sell the world.

My personal headcanon was that If Roshi had died by exerting too much energy, it would have been essentially a natural death unable to be reversed by the dragon balls. Of course, there are lots of holes you can poke into that, ie what happened with Guru on Namek and the Super Dragon Balls being able to undo that anyway..

It had a really, really bad showing at E3 last year. The Demo was awful, no one wanted to play it (and those that did only because it had no lines), word of mouth was almost universally bad. I think they must have went back to the drawing board in some respect after that. I have no idea when we'll see it resurface.

I can't comment on Gamescom directly but should also note that Gamescom attendance dwarfs E3, and the scheduling is different in terms of public days. So not sure how strictly you can compare them. But yea, at E3 the only line I remember being shorter (at a major publisher in an expo hall) was the Divinity OS II console line. So while the line length itself isn't strictly indicative of anything, very few people that I personally talked to came away with a positive impression. Just my experience. Edit: Based on the date of that tweet it couldnt have been gamescom though.

I've only played with Spellblade (kinda a hybrid) and Rune Magic, but it seems interesting, and later in the game you can really specialize into magic-type builds with gear that allows you to cast stuff with no mana cost (it sounds more overpowered on paper than it is, but it's still pretty great). Rune magic is pretty varied in that you can use it to summon a sword or greatsword and then put a protective buff on yourself, or lay magic mines or light a floating lantern. And then the spellblade abilities can infuse Fire or Ice into the summoned sword (or a regular weapon), and then there's some general non-specialized magic you can use to buff the elemental damage with a boon (or you can use an item/potion). The magic isn't super overpowered on its own, but there are some powerful synergies. The same is true for melee abilities tbh. You can buy two cheap abilities in the first town to be able to quickly put both pain and confusion on an enemy with an axe/shield build. Note that the classes are more soft specializations by purchasing skills at trainers and not a hard choice like Dragon's Dogma or something like that.

Right now I'm using Shield Bash (Confusion) -> Talus Cleaver (Pain and Cripple) -> Attack with a 1h axe that is very fast and causes extreme bleeding. It seems honestly overpowered. And seeing these bow videos and 0% mana cost magic builds, I guess there's a handful of skill/equip combinations that kinda put you over and make the combat far less challenging, lol.

^ Great post. Just gonna note that stamina level 4 from Marshmelons / Marshmelon Tartines is really, really good. I was doing a quest for Mofat (?) in Monsoon, and if you followed the questlog alone, you'd miss at least two optional components to the quest. The quest log mentions just going to the campsite to find out what happened to the missionaries, but then one of the NPCs mentions that they were probably dragged off to a mountain camp west of there. If you go there, you learn that these mercenaries are surprisingly well armed and you find out details about the arrangement. EVEN AFTER your journal updates with the new information you gather at the mountain, THERE'S still more in that camp, and you find out that the implications are far deeper than even that. I had a similar thing pop up when dealing with the ash giants. I was able to incorporate optional dialogue from information I learned from the Elatt Priest, from the Giant Merchant, and from the journal abandoned in the Giant's ruins. While the quest log did mention seeking out additional information, it never pointed me to these things specifically. Even after one of the giants tipped me off about the journal specifically, I had to wander over there myself. If it's not obvious, I'm really enjoying myself, even though I agree with the complaints about floaty combat and weird dialogue VA. Also I hope they come up with some solution for quest rewards in co-op. (IMO, the host should get it no matter who 'turns in' the quest. On paper it seems like both parties should get the reward but that might be extremely exploitable.)

My friend and I have fought a handful of boss-esqe enemies. Usually they are bigger versions of some other monster, though I think at least one had some unique animations/rigging. Note that none of these were related to a questline, and we just stumbled on them on the way: Some other random thoughts: My friend and I are only about two quests into the "Blue Chamber" story, we've played about 25 hours. It''s slow going because we thoroughly explored the first area, then we thoroughly explored the Forest, and the second quest took place in the Marsh, so we've spent a lot of time there as well. One thing we've run into few times though is having cleared a dungeon area and then told to revisit it for a quest. In once instance, the quest simply respawned monsters in the area, in another we were told to kill a few bosses we had already killed, and basically we just got the quest reward immediately after speaking to an NPC again. I wish co-op partners would get skill rewards from the quests. I got a nice passive for helping the giants in the marsh but he didn''t. Even though loot on enemies and in chests isn't duplicated, there''s PLENTY of stuff to pick up so that it never really feels like we're shortchanging each other. Especially since we are focusing on different builds. We've even been splitting quest money and while we're not rolling in cash, it's never been an issue either. So just not getting quest reward skills is a bummer. I LOVE THE MUSIC IN THE MARSH. It's cool to have an area that feels like a marsh and it's pretty and spooky at the same time without feeling like an oppressive souls zone. We haven't been to the desert yet. I really like the lighting in this game. For instance, you can light a torch, and then drop it down a dark shaft to see if it is a "fall down" point in a dungeon, or simply a pit you should avoid. I've also seen my friend from a long distance away runniing accross a bridge with his lantern on. It's some neat stuff. I love that many crafting/cooking recipes give you multiple items per craft. It really helps sell the idea that combining basic items/food into better ones is rewarding and worthwhile. Combat is frustrating in single player for us. Maybe we just have to "get gud" or something, but it feels a whole lot more rewarding to find cool synergies with your buddy (one inflicts pain and the other confusion, or one tanks and the other uses a bow/spells, etc). I don't think I would enjoy this nearly as much on my own simply trying to take care of conditions, damage, impact, and stability management in one build. Feels far more rewarding to specialize and play with someone that compliments that. And while buying skills does set you on a certain playstyle/path, the face that there's no inherent stats does mean that you have a lot of flexibility to try other weapon and gear types on a whim. Only exception to this would be switching to a magic-based build and back, since you have to travel to a specific place to do that. Right now I've spent breakthrough points at the Spellblade in Cierzo and the Warrior Monk in Monsoon. The survival aspects of the game really drop off eventually, especially if you get the warrior monk passive of Slow Metabolism. We're holding onto food ingrediants and teas not for survival management, but for their buffs. Right our our generally favorite foods that are simple that we go back to again and again are Alpha Jerky (health + rage bonus, cook Alpha Meat with Salt) and Marshmelon Tartine (a great stamina regen). For Mana I dont cast much, but I like the Turnip Pottage, or whatever that's called. Mineral Tea is good for healing burnt health, and while other teas heal burnt Stamina, I feel like it's hard to beat a Greater Endurance potion to top off on that. It's not really a survival game past a point, but I still love the heavy degree of item management, and the multiple small synergies that you can find between items, skills, weapon types, etc. Combat is pretty fun in two player, but it's not the focus, and I'm okay with that. It's still pretty fun to backstab an enemy after my friend gets their attention by opening the fight with a bow shot. I like the fact that dying usually has your body dragged somewhere either with or without your items is obviously inconvenient, but I like having to deal with that possibility rather than just loading a save and, idk, going into the exact same situation only with a dozen traps ready to go. Some very basic tips for people who arent as far: 1.) Traps are super effective against most things. You can make five tripwire lines using simple materials like linen, wood, and iron scraps. And even just basic iron spikes (4x iron scraps) have been plenty to take a chunk of health out of even the nastiest looking shit. And then you can use other neat materials in traps that you wouldn't expect, like Alpha Deer antlers for a severe bleed trap. I haven't unlocked pressure-plate traps yet, but they seem neat with the ability to do elemental damage. 2.) Save up and buy the passive health/resting bonus in Cierzo, it's a nice easy boon to be able to stay on top of your health. 3.) Skeletons/Ghosts are weak to ethereal, the "pink element" of the game. Ethereal varnish can be made with Gaberry Wine, Mana Stones, and Ghost Eye. It will really help against tanky red skeletons. Similarily, dinos are weak to lightning. 4.) Continued from above: Pairing an elemental rub/varnish with the boon that boosts that damage (ie, Fire Rag/Varnish + Warm Boon) is a huge way to do extra damage, even if you''re not focused on a skill line that uses that boon or using magic in that area 5.) The blue armor crafting in Cierzo does seem worth it btw, if you want to go into a semi-heavy armor build. I never replaced my armor in the Forest area. Maybe not a good idea if going to the desert though, due to the hot weather penalty. 6.) You can camp near butterflies to not have to spent hours guarding. 7.) As far as I can tell, outside of the actual skill trainers, there's also weapon trainers that will teach one skill per weapon type. Often found in an Inn, but generally anywhere in town. Last thing: I generally like how the game looks. It's not the most technically impressive thing in the world and there's a lot of motion blur, but I like the lighting like I said and the overly-saturated look of everything.

I think they should have stuck to one to three word 'chirps' instead of this weird half-voiced thing, which just makes it come across more like a series of errors. I also managed to find all three doorways into the mountain. Soon I have to decide which NPC (and thus I assume, main questline) to follow.

There are some ways that the game's death logic breaks down a bit though. For instance, in the Vendavel (?) Fort, we got thrown in jail, told the jailers we'd help the medic, grabbed our stuff back from the chests instead (well, that was easy), then killed the guards, and got the prison key. We put it in our pack. We then tried to fight the dude that threw us in there in the first place and died. So we got thrown in prison again....only the guards were still dead so we just walked out. Our stuff was put in the exact same place, key and all. Obviously it's kinda nice that it's not so incredibly punishing, but it does result in some nonsensical situations like that. Edit: I saw a vendor have some Travelers Boots of some sort with a movement speed buff IIRC.

Dying doesn't seem so punishing. I've always been able to find my gear in a nearby chest if it's stripped off me, and the compass will point to your backpack. Main thing I don't like is there feels like a lack of collision/feedback on the combat. A halberd will completely whiff (either the enemy on me or the opposite) and the health will still take a hit. I was using a mace/shield but the reach was just too awful, so I switched to a greataxe (got the fang one you can craft from the first town's shop) and I'm rolling to avoid damage instead. Seems to be a lot better.Best part of the game so far imo. Exploring and venturing out far away from safety feels deliberate and rewards planning.

Again, we bailed out until we made it back to the first town, only I did manage to pick up an Iron Mace on the way. Thread Nier Automata has "fake" HDR on Xbox. Please Devs, don't make this a thing.
I have an HDR monitor, and I've enabled it on both my hardware and in games that support it (FFXV) and I still am not sure if it's working properly. I also was in the NVidia area at E3 where they were showing off both their big monitor displays and HDR and I still felt that it merely looked different, not better (they had two displays of Destiny 2 side by side, one with HDR). What a weird thing.

The perspective seems kinda weird. Edelgard is reaching behind her, and Dimitri is reaching forwards, but Claude is ahead of (seemingly?) both of them. So I'm not sure the weapons colliding even makes sense unless Claude's weapon is arched backwards severely or some weird other thing. Edit: Maybe only the 2d projection of the weapons onto the boxart 'face' are supposed to cross ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thread Share your PhD life!
I got my PhD in Materials Science in 2015. I decided to go into industry instead of academia because it felt far, far more suited to the sort of lifestyle I want. Working 8-4 salaried without having to worry about funding or grants or leading a rotating crop of lab members felt like a win to me. At the expense of probably not authoring anything anytime soon. I'm currently a Senior Engineer at an electronics manufacturing company.

Thread Judgment has two sets of English subtitles, one to match spoken JP dialogue
Yea, this isn't new news, but it's awesome all the same. It's not being dubbed in those languages, so they only need the japanese translation sub. (The only other option would be to translate from the english dub script, which wouldn't really make sense. It would be transferring the altered english localization, which could be problematic.) The prospect of playing with the english dub with the japanese audio sub is actually kinda neat imo.

Thread Division 2 team says game won’t make political statements, despite marketing that implies otherwise. Isn’t that weak?
Ubisoft seems to basically be superficially indulging in the political zeitgeist in the name of trendy marketing, but doesn't want to take a stance strong enough to alienate any potential customer. Bethesda/MachineGames were 'able' to go a bit further than that, thinking that "Nazis are bad" would be universally accepted, but even they got a surprisingly high amount of pushback for something that safe.

Thread Any advice for visiting Atlanta? (Also my first trip on my own)
I know aquariums are kinda lame on average, but the Georgia Aquarium is actually really stellar. You can probably get a combo ticket with the World of Coke if you look around. You might also consider looking into a CNN tour if that's your jam. Restaurants: Antico for pizza (a must). Max Lager's for steak, Nan (a little pricey) for thai food.

Thread Why do silent protagonists still exist
For me, it tends to depend on what sort of game it is. There's certain genres or styles where I don't question my character not having a voice. I actually like first-person (or isometric) RPGs when the player-character isn't voiced. I guess I don't really expect to hear my dialogue options read out loud back to me after I select them. Immersive sims or FPS I could go either way on (I guess it depends if it has third person cutscenes or not). Third-person games feel the weirdest when the protagonist isn't voiced. All just personal preference, I guess. I think attributing not providing a voice as merely a budget concern is a little silly though.

I thought it was clumsy and awkward tbh (but at the same time, not really bothered because I knew it was going to be changed). I think I'd prefer if she just went "die, Goku!. Kill, Goku! Crush, Goku!" Or something instead. Looking forward to seeing the Cauli/Kale stuff next episode.

I'm not 100% sure what compels me to do so, but I can't remember the last game I've started that I haven't also chosen to finish. Sometimes I do the bare minimum, but always have to at least see the credits. So it usually means I play a smaller raw number of games than most people I know within the hobby, lol.

Koch Media is under THQ Nordic AB, not THQ Nordic GmbH (the company in question here). As far as I understand it, there's no reason to attribute this specific gaffe to Koch or Deep Silver at all (Edit: See below). Edit: Lars Wingefors is Chief Executive of both companies. Phillipp Brock is PR Director of GmbH.

Thread Enderal: Forgotten Stories Release Trailer (Coming February 14)
Hmm. I'm not really feeling that so far. I haven't finished it, but the quest line that starts at the Undercity Arena is really engaging. It's got some great characters and mood, and I like how it's morally ambiguous. Looks like it's one of the major questlines in the game based on some of the achievement lists and such. Looks like the other major questline is the one that starts at the Golden Sickle guild. I'm enjoying some of the low key quests as well, like the "companion" ones where you just chill with them at the tavern or on top of the watchtower. Most of the characters are surprisingly well voiced too. Some of them are obviously kinda more filler (the egg hunt and the bounties) but on average I'm enjoying the side quests. At least there's no 'radiant' chaff to mentally screen out.

Definitely get the unofficial patch. It's "required". Personally, I would be thrilled if they updated the game just to play nicer with modern hardware, like what KoTOR II got a few years ago. As for this, I guess we take a rain check for a month? So far away...lol
