As soon as I saw the photos, I knew this was the biggest mistake that the administration had and still has made. That situation undoubtably seeded the virus into thousands of communities across the US, once people returned to their home cities and towns and likely went straight out to markets to replenish their supplies or panic buy. It could have been done so much better. Clearer communication to avoid panic and not overwhelm airports, have returning people be screened for fever, all travelers going into mandatory self isolation, have nationwide stay at home guidance already in place. None of that happened, and the result probably made the situation worse for the US in a way that no other single action or decision has.

I think some people just need to believe someone is out to get them and holding them down for "reasons". This virus is simultaneously an attack by the Chinese, a coverup for 5G, a way for the government/police to get dictatorship powers and curb freedoms, and a way for Bill Gates to sell you a vaccine that will track you.

Thread How do developers balance their games?
In terms of how balancing and tweaking that balance is achieved, at an abstract level this tends to happen by some combination ofIdeally, you move as much of the game balance to be data driven and in a spreadsheet as possible, as that makes it easier to iterate and test. Ongoing usability testing with external subjects (for those that leverage that) keeps a steady flow of fresh subjects to keep testing difficulty, comprehension etc against. Besides that, tweaking things so your QA department finds the game "too easy" is generally a decent rule of thumb as a place to put the default difficulty.

My guess is the drop is emissions is dramatic enough and long enough to end up buying us a couple of years of what marginal improvements to emissions standards and increased efficiency would have otherwise managed. Without addressing the underlying problem though, a little more time isn't going to mean much, especially given how close to the edge we already were.

A lot of that can be easily placed on "the media" over-hyping the situation and various institutions "over-reacting" as a result. "Not Trumps fault". Current Trump supporters won't budge until friends and family start dying or being crippled, or they themselves fall sick. Even then, there is a chance they blame China or Obama or "Obamacare" because of course they would. What's going to be interesting is the lack of concern implies a lack of caution among conservatives that will see them be affected disproportionately early on.

Thread Coronavirus: Is it possible that we'll see upcoming game releases delayed?
Our studio (in NZ) is laying down the groundwork currently for remote work, self isolation, limiting social interaction etc. Game development is highly collaborative, so a majority of people working from home is going to create new inefficiencies in communication and workflow, especially around guidance and feedback. It will take longer to do the same amount of stuff to the same quality. Completely remote teams are possible, and these work all the time where teams are small. But at a larger scale where there are many more interdependencies it is a lot more challenging, especially if a team is both not used to it and doesn't have the systems in place for it.

It definitely still happens. As a developer/publisher, we get "companies" offering bulk fake review services a couple of times a week, every week. However, I don't think it is anywhere need the scale or prevalence of what it used to be. Apple and Google are slightly more savvy to it, and the stakes are higher if you are caught. There was a noticeable quaver in her voice when trying to defend herself when responding to Pete that felt more like it came from a lack of confidence than anger. I felt overall she presented herself better than Biden though, who came across as kind of lost and struggling to keep up. Warren was fire.

It's been discussed before in these threads that midterm precedent wouldn't necessarily apply given the way the particular races coming up and that there is some baked in favourability for Democrats. I'm not informed enough to argue it other than to remember I believe that's the general sentiment (am happy to be corrected). Of course, an ineffectual first two years could certainly be problematic and erase any current strategic advantage. Regardless of what happened in the midterms (and I already conceded in my post winning the Senate wasn't a given), I think it would still be better to have a Democratic President without the Senate at least initially than 4 more years of Trump doubling down. Most of the damage he has done hasn't needed legislation to pass both houses, and he'll dial up that approach to 11. And "merely turning back the clock to 2017" would be a damn sight better than where things are now.

The preference (and likely outcome?) here has to be B, surely. A neutered Democratic President still has the power of executive orders, and can unpick some of the damage Trump has done. And given the Senate map gets more favourable in 2022 (right?), then you'd potentially get to a place where you could be productive in the second half of the term. Not to mention what might with Supreme court vacancies over the next 4 years (you might not be able to fill them without the Senate, but at least somebody Trump nominated wouldn't be railroaded through). Trump has already shown he doesn't care for political norms and the "gentlemens agreements" of the past. And the system has proven inadequate in terms of checks and balances on his power, and that doesn't seem likely to change much even if Republicans lost the Senate. If he got elected again, that means he got through impeachment "unscathed", and he managed to get away with all the other stuff he's done in his first term he should have been impeached and removed for but didn't. He'd be emboldened, claim a mandate, and things in a practical sense would likely get a lot worse. At an absolute minimum, he'd continue looting the country for personal gain.

Thread You are given the power to go back in time and kill baby Hitler, would you do it?
Is "replacing" somebody with somebody else justifiable? People are not just "interchangeable". Again, you are exchanging the existence of one group for the existence of another. If those lives already happened then you are effectively killing people. At the very least, you are erasing lives they lived from "history".People aren't saying there would be an empty Earth when positing you are eliminating the existence of millions or billions. The change in population, displacement of individuals, and shift in resources among other things as a result of World War 2 and the Holocaust is absolutely enough to completely change the shape of globally is born. People who otherwise would have been born wouldn't be. If your parents conceived months earlier or later than yourself were conceived, their resulting offspring wouldn't be "you". Also possible your parents would never conceive at all. Basic "butterfly effect" in action, except in this case the butterfly is a global scale event. Let's scale this dilemma down with a more personal example... Joe is a good natured, single man who owns and runs his own general store. One day an unhinged individual decides to take his own life, but maliciously wants to "take somebody with him", and randomly chooses Joe's store, gunning down Joe in cold blood with a shot through the heart before shooting himself dead. Joe is dead, tragic and unfair, his life cut short undeservedly. Mary and John, strangers to each other but known to Joe, attend Joe's funeral. They meet there, start dating, fall in love, get married and have a single child Mark. Mark grows up to become a good natured construction work, marries, and has 3 kids of his own. They are strangers to you, but all living their lives right now alongside you, right now. You have a time machine, and the limited ability to go back to the general store on that fateful day Joe died. Joe is also a stranger to you, but you can stop Joe getting killed, by supplying a bullet proof vest, by locking the store front, or just getting him to go home early that day. You can overturn the selfish, evil actions of the shooter easily, allowing Joe to live out his life, probably having kids of his own. You have that power. However, if Joe doesn't die, Mary and John don't meet, Mark is never born, and Mark's kids are never born. Do you save Joe?

This strikes me as sociopathic. You aren't "transforming" people into different people. You are erasing the existence of some people to bring into existence other, different people. This also strikes me as sociopathic. People aren't interchangeable. This is why the Trolley Problem exists.I don't know what I would do. That's the point. It's an "impossible" choice. Both are strangers to me. I don't prefer anybody. Is it more fair that Joe lives and Mark never lives? Or more fair that Joe dies and Mark lives? I will say that I wouldn't, personally, consider any inaction on my part "killing Joe", though I would consider saving Joe as "erasing Mark", and tantamount to "killing" him. Either way, I'd feel guilty. On one hand, I could have saved Joe. On the other hand, I erased Mark (and his descendants).I don't even understand what you are trying to say here, or what point you are trying to make. Also, in my example, Mark was as much of a stranger as Joe.I don't know. Again, how do you even begin to make this choice.

What does the total number of people existing afterwards have to do anything? You are trading the lives of one set of innocent people and their descendants for another. What is the justification for snuffing out the existence of one group of innocents for another? Rationalizing this by looking at "total head count" seems an overly simplistic way to approach the problem. How do you even start to decide what is fair? Why even stop at Hitler? Why not go back to stop the Armenian Genocide, Irish Genocide, Mongol Genocide, etc? There is always going to be a group of persecuted people killed unfairly further back, and every time you go further back, you wipe out (ever more) the existences of those born after. How far back do you go? Which genocide deserves to be undone more? And how many existences of people born since are you willing to erase in exchange? If "the crime has already happened" then the lives of those who wouldn't have lived because of the Holocaust (likely the majority of people born since it) have also lived lives that have "already happened". You are basically admitting this path would end the existence of billions of people that "already happened".

Frequent travel last year meant I didn't spend a lot of time in the kitchen given I often had a fairly empty refrigerator. I finally organized myself to make dinner for someone for a first a date. Wanting a little wow factor out of the gate, I put together an appetizer plate featuring caviar, creme fraiche, lemon zest, and edible gold on a pure caramel wafer, salami, ricotta, and apricot preserve on cracker, salmon, creme fraiche, lime wafer slice, and dill on blini, duck liver parfait and tamarillo chutney on cracker, and triple cream Brie, chili flakes, and manuka honey on cracker. Unfortunately, she both stood me up and ghosted me, so I had to bring in a friend to share the meal (for the record the main course was fillet steak, sweet potato mash, and butter fried green beans and sliced almonds, and we skipped the dessert I had planned). Oh well, at least it didn't go to waste.

Thread Dating has become such a frivolous, impersonal thing
IMO (gross generalizations follow) dating is harder than ever as cheaper travel, social media, and apps have given people more (real and perceived) options. That has seemingly made people in general less committal, and more wary of going on a "serious" date because they are concerned about intentions and it weirdly makes "hooking up" easier than "going to dinner". It means you have to respond by being prolific in meeting and asking people out, and you need to get less sensitive about rejection. On Tinder (or any online dating) in particular, it's a volume game where competition is high. You have to present yourself as high value AND "different". Have good photos including one showing you in a social situation, same something interesting and different in your profile, always open asking a question about something specific to their photos or profile, and always respond to them with a comment/answer and another question. Then try to transition the conversation to another messaging app or txt within a dozen or so back and forths. Suggest dates that are more on the casual side such as getting coffee, drinks, or a dessert somewhere rather than something where the person may be wary of being "stuck" like touring a vineyard or some fancy dinner. Tinder or not, ghosting is a prevalent thing you just have to suck up. It's a response to toxicity and an easy way of avoiding an awkward conversation or conflict in the modern age. You aren't really wasting that much time sending a few messages back and forth only to be ghosted. Just view it as the person being not considerate enough and that they probably wouldn't be "worth it" because of that anyway (and don't keep sending them messages either). If you are really stuck and lacking confidence, and assuming you are in the US, save up and take Tinder with you on a vacation to South America or South East Asia (if you haven't traveled this would be confidence building and good for life experience anyway). (Further gross generalization) Women in those regions seem somewhat more responsive than those in North America and Western Europe especially to foreigners, and a little more eager and bolder when it comes to going out on a date (use Google Translate if necessary). Of course, if you want something more meningful to come out of that approach, the logistics are going to be challenging. tldr; be prolific, don't sweat ghosting

Thread The cost of a Sega Saturn development kit back in 1995
We actually started our studio off the back of a Net Yaroze dev kit. As you say, you could only get so far even with some shady libraries and Action Replays, so after about 18 months we purchased a full performance analyzer "dev kit" (actually a massive PC card that took up multiple slots). From memory it cost, in 1999, about NZ$45k or about US$25k given the exchange rate at the time which was a huge amount for us at the time being 3 22-3 year olds. In bringing it into the country, we had to pay a large amount of import tax, which we got refunded because we were earning no revenue, which triggered an automatic audit by our inland revenue department. We were actually the first fully licensed PlayStation developer in the southern hemisphere, which still baffles us given we were just 3 guys in a flat in the suburbs in NZ at the time, but that fact managed to get us our first development contract. We managed to avoid buying more expensive dev kits by buying the "unlocked" PSX test units which I think were about US$1500-2000 each and combining them with ActionReplays and hacker software. Our first commercial PSX game was also our last for the platform. We went from that contract to do a couple of PC and web games, then jumped up to the PS2 and Xbox 360 (and have since done PS3, PS4, PSP, Vita, Xbox One, and Switch on just the console side). Still have a bunch of hardware of all sorts sitting in our store room. Browsing through there brings back a lot of memories. No Net Yaroze though. That got stolen in a burglary of our flat and it was never recovered.

Indeed, even as a non citizen/tourist, our emergency services are free, which as a tax payer I am totally fine with. Quite the contrast to the couple of times I have ended up in emergency in the US - once for myself, where the hospital made me fill out my insurance form by myself self with my cut open writing hand bleeding all over it, and once for my girlfriend, where hospital security marched me to the ATM to put an $800 *deposit* for a replacement asthma inhaler for her.

The notion that development studios or individual developers aren’t to an extent motivated by money, profits, bonuses, whatever is fairly naive, leaning on the notion that developers are all in it “for the art alone”. That can certainly be true, mostly at a smaller scale, but a commercialized operation like Rockstar almost certainly has revenue and profitability goals of their own, even before a parent company or publisher comes into the mix. You can’t sustainably run a large scale development studio, especially not one building massive games, without caring about money. Doing so also doesn’t require ignoring quality, fun, or customers. More development studios should care about money and profitability to be honest. Less people would probably lose their life savings (or at least their jobs) that way.

Outside of the primaries being done and the nominee selected, it would be easy to position such a move as a dereliction of duties for selfish reasons, or worse a deliberate politically motivated handicap trap for Trump while his opponents are free to campaign.

I think the only play that likely ends with the removal of Trump is if impeachment is stretched past his re-election. At the point where Trump is re-elected, Republicans would totally throw him under the bus, ushering in 4 years of President Pence. They want the Presidency, not the person. The talk of a secret ballot on his removal also seems optimistic, as even if that was a thing I don't think that makes it more likely he would be removed either. If anything I think moderate Republicans would use it as cover to play both sides while voting in their own interests.

Doing the opposite by bringing more people into the process would be much more effective, without being a dirty tactic, and actually leaning more into the spirit of the US - add more polling places everywhere, extend/allow early/mail-in voting everywhere, consider a voting public holiday, give DC and US territories Statehood, etc.

I don't personally see both sides as the same (my post suggests they explicitly aren't). Indeed, the main skill of the Republicans arises from the difference you point out - their ability to boil down anything to a singular, repeatable catchphrase used by any politician, spokeperson, or layperson to overwhelm any nuanced or complex rebuttal is amazing in it's ability to sway public opinion and influence media reporting. The Democrats situation makes it much more challenging to respond in kind. The current scandal might be an exception here given Republicans are on the back foot (and busy throwing each other under the bus), and most Liberals can see the problem given the issue itself is pretty clear cut and it involves screwing with a foreign entity rather than US citizens or institutions where policy opinion might matter. Will be interesting to see if Republicans can pull things back by finding something to rally behind.

A missing part of the debate on Amico above is the appeal to developers. There is none. Having game prices capped at $7.99, content restricted to E10+, requirement for games to be exclusive thereby limiting upside, and lack of both Unity and Unreal support will make development harder, more expensive, and with less commercial potential than almost any alternative platform. The opportunity cost and risk are high relative to the limited upside, which just doesn't make this platform a good place to invest time and resources. Especially when the likes of Apple, Google, and Epic are throwing around money to bring content to platforms with much bigger upside. This would have been a better play - revive the brand as a digital publisher of casual and hyper casual games on mobile and web, including reinvigorating their classic licenses. Still a challenging marketplace, but massively more viable as a business model than where they are headed.

Maybe. It isn't "on the list" currently, but there are a few things that are looking a little long in the tooth and some opportunities like this that we could address. We've brought the game across to Unity so that will make adding support for higher resolutions and post-processing easier (frame rate impact notwithstanding). Unless developers push that information out, there is no easy way to discern that from the outside (unlike, say, trademark registrations or company ownership). Ownership of individual game rights might be vested in individual employees, publishers, acquiring entities, IP purchasers, IP holding companies, investors, debtors - it really depends on what deals were done and the fate of the original company. On top of that complexity, there may be split rights between for a game where one entity owns the IP and the other owns the underlying tech. And also there are instances where multiple companies share the rights, participate in derived revenues, or need to provide approval for anything that happens to it. I've tried tracking down the rights to a couple of games from the 80s that I was interested to remake, and it was a mission that ultimately ended up being "too hard".

What they basically showed and implied was "a whole lot of people got sad and gave up or stopped trying". There wasn't really that much impact depicted beyond what was shown in The Leftovers, and in that TV series only 2% of the worlds population disappeared (the effects and aftermath of the event in that show felt fairly solid). The reality of the Snap would be a lot more actual death and destruction between immediate accidents, fire, disease, starvation, suicide, looting/riots, revolutions/war, etc. But that would have been far more dark than what the movie called for.

I wasn't concerned about that at all. Though I thought the consequences of the Snap weren't really followed through on in the first place. For example, 1/4 of all passenger airliners would have lost both pilots, 1/2 of all car, truck, and bus drivers would have disappeared etc which would create a massive amount of collateral and infrastructure damage while the remaining half of first responders, police, military, and health workers would have struggled to cope with the chaos (especially if they lost critical team members). Society would have broken down completely between the human losses, fires and breakdown in services, and the emotional trauma. Did Thanos wish for the culling to happen "safely" too? That's a better question in my opinion.

Selecting for intelligence is a reasonable possible outcome in rapidly changing ecosystems where “resourcefulness” is going to be necessary in a species sink or swim situation. Crows are probably best placed to “step up” over time given they can more easily coexist with humans seeing as they are mostly ignored and have lower energy requirements than bigger species like apes, and their already greater intelligence might be a platform to build on when competing in urban areas against large populations of pigeons, rats, cats, dogs etc.

Thread Are QA employees seen as a hindrance when a game is developed?
There are a couple of levels to this. Speaking from experience, when QA is first introduced to frontline developers either internally or via a publisher, it can certainly be the case that testers can be seen as "just creating more work" when something is already "done". However, developers do come around and see QA as a valuable part of the process, especially for helping hunt down obscure issues and verifying work. It can also be the case that management will decide to ship a game, despite known issues raised by QA. It is going to be incredibly rare where the QA function itself has the authority to hold a game back from shipping. So some of those situations where gamers might say "how did their QA miss this" is a misdirected comment when in actuality the critique should be "how could the company ship knowing they had this". That being said, games are very complicated pieces of software and can be incredibly hard to test in a comprehensive way that exposes all known issues ahead of time. The majority of console games will have dozens of testers logging a few hundred hours each at best. On release, you suddenly have thousands or tens of thousands of "testers" playing in a much wider variety of ways, so through orders of magnitude more eyes on the game you have the potential for the audience themselves to expose issues that managed to slip past the QA team.

Sales are ultimately driven by the developer seeing as Apple can't force a price change. So decisions around when and how much to discount are going to come down to individual company decisions based on whatever their situation is. Historically, sales of premium game sales were useful to drive virality and short term ranking improvements. However, with increased competition from free games in terms of dominating the grossing charts, having much bigger audiences, and ultimately having the lions share of App Store real estate, the benefits from putting a premium game on sale are low or even non existent. Most companies are just better off leaving the price static. The exception is participating in an Apple category sale which is featured on the Store. Featuring makes a huge difference to the visibility of a game and resultant downloads, especially for premium games. So it is worthwhile if approached by Apple to participate in that sort of opportunity. They don't seem to do those often though, and even when they do you are talking about only a small number of games in the scheme of things being discounted. Keep an eye out on bigger holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Those periods are when both individual companies are more likely to discount stuff and when Apple is most likely to feature discounts due to higher volume App Store audience at those times.

Thread Getting old, need hair color advice
If you are going down this path, and I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with dying your hair, it is probably best to start by having a professional do it, at least the first time. A hair stylist will be well placed to cut and colour you hair in a way that matches your natural colour in a good way. While they are doing it, you can ask questions about what colour they think it is, how often they think it will have to be redone, how to care for coloured hair etc. You can do it yourself at home with equally good results, but if you use a home kit you should start by choosing a colour/shade that you would think is actually a little lighter than what you think your hair is. The fastest way to make dyed hair look unnatural is by going too dark, especially when talking about "black". If you think your "black" hair is actually black, choose "Dark Brown" to start. If you think your hair is actually "Dark Brown", choose "Medium Brown". A standard brand like Just for Men should do just fine, but make sure to read and follow the instructions very carefully (read all the way through before starting), and try to apply with care to avoid staining skin around the hairline or getting dye on your earlobes etc. Either way, you'll need to repeat getting your hair dyed every 4-8 weeks if you want to keep the grey disguised. Exactly how often will come down to how you hair is styled (shorter, neater styles will show grey regrowth quicker), how thick you hair is (bushy or thick hair covers regrowth for longer), and how fast your hair grows (faster growing hair will obviously show regrowth faster). Given your hair has already been greying for years and people around you are commenting on it, people will notice that you have dyed it and certainly some of them will comment on the fact you have dyed it. Be prepared for a range of comments, some positive, some negative on how it looks, some saying you should have left it grey and just "be yourself". If you stick with it, it will become normalized, and over time the comments will subside as people forget about it (and perhaps your preferred outcome is getting back to a pre-grey time where nobody bothered to comment on your hair at all). The thing to remember during the initial period is it is what you think of the results that matters, and you should stick with it or not based on how you feel about it, not others.

Thread No Man's Sky's Sean Murray explains why it's best for Anthem and Fallout 76's developers to stay silent after launch
DIfferent games, different circumstances, different audiences. Every failed game launch requires a customized approach to try and bring it back. For example, communication outright wasn't the issue with Anthem so much as their failure to deliver the roadmap against the timeline they had communicated losing them even more credibility and goodwill. Going silent is also risky given the chance your audience believes nothing is being done to improve things. That might work in the case of something like No Mans Sky as a(n essentially) single player game you can come back to at any point. Less so for a multiplayer live services game which has a schedule of events and relies on having a critical mass of community, so timeliness and maintaining audience interest over time from launch matters much more.

Given the graph is focused on the matchups, it is possible it is ordered by (fractional) margin over Trump from top to bottom, and with rounding it is possible that Warren's (underlying fractional) margin is larger than Sanders'. While a plausible "excuse" and potentially not deliberate, that of course doesn't make it a good chart.

They might have rounded the percentages to the closest whole number, but ordered by the underlying, non rounded fractional margin. For example, Warren could have had 48.4 vs 48.0 for a 0.4 margin, while Sanders could have had 48.6 vs 48.4 for a 0.2 margin. I've seen graphs and Excel sheets presented like that before.

It sounds intimidating, but it was actually just comical in the moment. Between things like them seriously considering I'd run out on my girlfriend to avoid the bill, there only being one manual visa "zip zap" machine in the whole hospital, and watching one admin person read my girlfriends info off one computer so another next to her could type it back into another computer, the whole system just seemed antiquated and broken. And this is a hospital in San Francisco city, one of the most prosperous and "tech savvy" cities in the world. That is pretty much how I ended up watching it, by accident, and pretty much what happened. Don't think I've had that many goosebumps since being a kid. It's weird, because it isn't that overtly scary, but it just kind of creeps up on you over time. The bits where Paul himself gets rattled are what got to me the most. Paul's commentary is great and very natural. Am missing it on the later episodes, perhaps enjoying them less even because of it.Yeah, I'm impressed by the intricacy of it, and how small things become relevant or tie together later. For example, when halfway through the series Paul realizes he can take the bucket outside the house to capture a version of Tool, and then uses that method to go back and capture the pet he didn't know how to from early in the very first episode. It seems meticulously planned because of stuff like that. Or they are doing a hell of a job ad libbing their way through. It definitely doesn't seem native PlayStation, as it doesn't exhibit the flaws the original console had as far as I can see. But does a decent job of evoking that era of games.

Thread Do you live in an interesting life?
I'd say I live an interesting life relative to the average, depending on how one measures that (certainly keeps me stimulated). I run a videogame developer and publisher which is interesting in itself in terms of working with smart creative people on innovative things with constant new challenges and opportunities. But that also has me interacting regularly with the film and music industries, and traveling almost monthly all over the world to 22 different countries to date (and another new one in a few months). I've met a few heads of state, high ranking government officials, and a number of celebrities. I have good friends I hang out with from across several countries, that range from those working behind bars and waiting tables to entrepreneurs worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and from college students through to people in their 70s. My romantic relationships have been varied and fun. Outside of that, I like to entertain and am a fairly good cook, have the chance to eat great food from a wide range of cultures, enjoy amateur photography, and have even represented my country internationally in sport including being team captain at that level. I'm getting back into creative writing, will be designing and building out my first garden this summer, and am trying to learn Spanish. Along the way I've collected various oddball stories from finding myself amid the panic of the Vegas shooting to an overly drunken "adventure" on a night out in Budapest. Life is good, and to me at least it's pretty interesting. Sometimes you end up just kind of lost and busy in it all, but when I get the chance to take a step back and take it all in I appreciate and am thankful for all I have and the sacrifices people like my parents made to help me get here.

Thread Which is the worst airline in the world?
I had a long haul return trip from NZ to Manilla, Philippines on Philippines Airlines, about 15 hours total flight time. Firstly, the "nonstop" advertised flight (which is why I chose it over Qantas) turned out to have a stop in Cairns, Australia, which I only discovered at checkin. The plane configuration wasn't very comfortable in economy space wise. The flight was delayed in NZ and in Australia, though not too much in each instance. The food was not good. The entertainment was limited (not sure my seat even had a video screen now I think about it). On the way back, boarding was delayed in Manilla by an hour, actual boarding was choas, then we sat on the tarmac for a while. Then they announced they were adding an additional stop within the Philippines to drop off some cargo they had taken on. After that unscheduled stop, we flew on to Cairns, and boarding was again delayed. We departed for Auckland several hours late by this point, and I knew I'd be pushing it to get the last available flight on to Wellington where I live which I had been rescheduled onto during the flight. When we finally arrived in Auckland, the pilots parked too close to the gate and we had to wait 15 minutes for a vehicle to tow us backwards so we could disembark. The air crew tried to make me wait for everybody else who was late for their connecting flight as I left the plane because for some stupid reason they thought waiting for everybody then going as a group to get our luggage and go through immigration would make it easier than just rushing ahead, but I insisted I leave being a seasoned veteran of the airport and did. I missed my rescheduled connecting flight to Wellington by 5 minutes , and had to stay the night in Auckland which Philippines Air did not pay for (because they wanted me to come from the Domestic Terminal all the way back to the International Terminal to fill out a form after having basically run across in the the other direction with my suitcase). Not a single part of the experience was good. They managed to disappoint or fall below an acceptable standard in every aspect. For the record in terms of good airlines, I'm biased, but Air New Zealand is great in almost every aspect other than they lean expensive relative to other airlines. Makes it hard having to transfer from them onto other airlines when traveling afar.

Thread Hand-holding tutorials suck. Why are developers so afraid of giving player full control in the tutorial?
We have a usability test lab in our studio, and I can say under observation that more hand holding usually works best for the majority of gamers in terms of learnability and ultimately enjoyment. As a specific simple anecdote, hardcore and especially male gamers have a tendency to skip past tutorials when they shouldn’t. We had a level based game in which the early skippable set of levels was labeled “Tutorial” or similar. 100% of male test subjects skipped these levels, then found the game too hard and became frustrated because they assumed the game worked a certain way when it didn’t. Simply relabeling “Tutorial” to “Easy” meant nobody skipped these levels, they actually learned how to play the game properly, and reported satisfaction went up. Game developers handhold because it works, and in a lot of cases they will have proven that it is the better option against alternatives.

Thread So How DO Companies Lose Game Source Code?
So, there are a bunch of reasons for how source code and other assets can get lost or effectively lost over time. These include simply not archiving in the first place for time or budget reasons, archives going bad or having hardware failure, physically losing archive tapes/storage, archives tapes/storage getting damaged by water/fire/crushing, the archiving process itself being flawed or restoration not being possible, accidental deletions, intentional deletions to save storage space or otherwise because the content was not perceived as valuable, losses from viruses or external attacks, tools/build processes becoming outdated over time or lost making the code/assets useless, and having lost knowledge or documentation on where or what is stored. Things like company growth and reorganizations, staff turnover, and relatively rapid evolution of software and hardware technology exacerbate these problems. Our game company has been going for over 20 years now, and pretty much experienced almost every one of the issues I list above at some point.

In our case, we got hit by a virus on our network when there were just 3 of us in the first couple of years starting out. We didn't have a central server, and I think we lost a few days to a couple of weeks worth of work each. There are plenty of potential external threats game developers face in the vein of denial of service attacks, disgruntled ex employees, viruses/virus ransomware, competitor espionage, GamerGate style network attacks/hacks, etc which could disrupt operations in general and potentially impact backups and archives. For us, we've only had a couple of minor incidents in these areas, and nothing thats had meaningful impact or hit our archives.

I ate raw chicken when I was about 8 or 9. I recall being at a family barbeque and being defiant/difficult, and was basically left to fend on raw meat (my own fault). From memory the texture and mouth feel was similar to a much firmer salmon and with a relatively delicate flavour. It certainly wasn't unpleasant. I think if you had to prepare it raw, you would end up doing something sushi/sashimi like, with small pieces sliced relatively thin, and on a cracker or on a rice cake nigiri style. I doubt mincing it and using it like beef tartar would be as appealing as it would be mushy in your mouth, and having larger or thicker cuts of it would be too hard to eat.

Thread Former Gearbox employee (allegedly) provides "proof" that Randy Pitchford diverted funds to a personal company
Recoupable advances on royalties are "earned" in the sense that they are typically a minimum guaranteed payment. Being recoupable means that the publisher recoups that payment out of the sales of the game before paying any further royalties on to the developer. If the sales aren't sufficient for the publisher to recoup the advance, then the developer doesn't have to pay anything they have received back, the publisher just has to take that hit. So, when 2k pays a recoupable advance to Gearbox or Randy's private company, it isn't 2K's money any more. There are actually very few contractual instances where a publisher can (attempt to) pull back money from a developer, and those are usually limited to instances where the developer majorly has breached/failed something particular. Most publishers don't even have such clauses in their contracts at all (in all the contracts I've done/seen, only Ubisoft has such legal provisions to actually try and get money back). Most publishing contracts are limited to holding back current and future payments in response to a (claimed) contractual breach or failed milestone approval.

I’ve been clubbing for a loooong time. There has definitely been a lot of change in electronica and dance music. Late 90s/early 2000s is probably my favourite era music wise between club EDM and hip hop, though that’s probably blended in with the nostalgia of the social fun I was having at the time. Felt there was a lot of diversity and innovation in club music at the time. Right now, there is definitely a lot of very samey sounding house tracks. Not surprising to me that a track like Losing It stands out - it’s simple, but it’s distinct and easy to get behind. A similar track which jumped out to me at the time was Portland by Watermat a few years back.

Not sure about Rehab pool party at the Hard Rock Hotel any more. I'll be staying there, but Rehab has gone downhill in the last few years and definitely has far less people than it used to. Wet Republic is overrated IMO too, especially with the current heat as there is virtually no shade there unless you have a table/cabana. All they have done is added an extra step and increased wait times. So much room for improvement. Traveling to the US even makes it worse on the NZ side when leaving. There is an additional passport check, interview, and potential security screening on top of the standard security screening and passport control. No other country destination requires that.

Vodka and soda water is my drink of choice for a number of years when going out to limit overall calorie, sugar, and caffeine intake and keep "water" intake high. But curious how it impacts fasting. Am assuming it turns a 24 hour fast into a 8:16 of sorts.

I'm not sure this would change a lot other than allowing for content and business models that Apple doesn't allow on the App Store. Though I understand that might be big for some. From a pure sales perspective, the alternate Android stores are barely worthwhile relative to the setup and support costs for the most part. Indeed, in our case almost every game we sold through an alternate store was a loss making exercise. I wouldn't be expecting an Epic Game Store situation any time soon. What would be really interesting is if through this exercise the Apple developer TOS changes in any way, which would alter what developers can and can't do on the App Store itself. Hmmm though I wonder whether Google would end up supporting iOS games on Google Play? That would be interesting.

With Trump presumably being required to testify under impeachment, how inevitable is a “You can’t handle the truth!” moment? His flaky memory, unwillingness to prepare, inability to NOT respond to accusations and criticism, limited grasp of what his legal authority actually is, willingness to throw allies under the bus, defensiveness, and limited attention span and stamina will leave him vulnerable to blurting something out, perhaps not incriminating but certainly morally and ethically reprehensible. Am I the only one who thought it was "obvious" that right at the end of the film Adelaide became aware that she was the "clone"? It seemed like a revelation that came to her through flashbacks given the trauma of the event? I didn't get the feeling Adelaide was aware of her past at all until then. My read was when they girls switched they became less aware of their individual pasts through their new circumstances. Adelaide being tethered had some sense of experience of her other before the switch, and possibly even the child therapy would have talked her out of the "delusion" of being trapped underground. Similarly, the trauma of Red, entrapment, and whatever mechanism is driving the tethering may have condemned her to being (or at least feeling) trapped, and 20+ years of not talking to anyone plus the confinement drove her mad. In any case, really enjoyed it. Too many highlights, so the lowlights for me were the initial text intro and the overly long exposition by Red at the blackboard. Both felt unnecessarily heavy handed.

Er, what? 50% of the population disappearing would be catastrophic for every country. Sure, countries with large populations would lose large parts of their population, but every country, city, and village would statistically look to lose 50% of their population. No country would avoid and meaningful loss. The collateral damage would be huge. 50% of people driving, flying planes, operating heavy machinery, etc would disappear And leave things in jeopardy. Fires and chemicals spills would abound. 50% of emergency and support services would disappear. Supply chains for food and energy would be disrupted or completely cut off in some cases. The emotional damage would be huge. Ordinary people wouldn’t be able to process the situation, the loss of life, the lack of explanation. People would panic, and basic survival instincts would kick in. The loss of knowledge, services, and expertise would be huge. The ability to react and recover would be horribly compromised. Endgame is going to show a very optimistic view of how people “carried on”. The reality would be a global devolution into panic, fear, rioting, looting, and tribalism.

The new cards aren't particularly interesting, at least beyond working out how to defeat them with my deck (which seems to be the general consensus given the vast majority of matches are "old school" decks). Going through the motions with the game to some extent. And yet, still playing and getting my Crown Chest and engaging in the War every single day. Kind of like a smoking habit perhaps. If they want to mix things up, they really need to introduce a couple of cards at once that when combined form a new win condition. That's about the limit of my ideas on where they could go. Thread Board Gaming Era |OT| (Mostly) Unplugged Gaming
Sure. Some good points there. To speak firstly to our philosophy as a company, while software development is relatively low footprint compared to most industries, we are conscious of any impact we have on the environment and it factors into decisions we make as owners and managers. For example, we recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, and cans etc. Our water cooler is plumbed directly into the main supply, so we don't use large plastic water bottles, and we supply glassware so people don't consume plastic or paper cups. We limit the use of printed materials in favour of digital solutions. We are even the first non food service company in NZ to have a fast food restaurant style Coke soda fountain installed in order to pretty much eliminate the use of cans and bottles. Now, has any of that thinking factored into the creation of the board game. The straight forward answer is no. We haven't really discussed the environmental impact of producing a board game, perhaps because it isn't expected to be a regular exercise and isn't at the core of what we do. Day to day people working here usually don't to think about it, because day to day it usually isn't an issue, so it isn't built into our process. At the very least, we don't expect to have a meaningful impact because ultimately the volume of units is going to be low, and we expect copies to be able to be used and cherished for decades rather than being a disposable, polluting product. I guess a similar thing would apply to our decision to create a 1000 limited edition vinyl release of the soundtrack for one of our successful console titles, Shatter. What we do now is raise environmental impact as a consideration as we finalize our decisions around manufacturing and materials. My guess is we'll be quite limited in what gains we could achieve though. I guess part of what you are asking is "does a boardgame version of the digital game need to exist if the digital version offers the same experience with much lower environmental impact"? Certainly the existence of a boardgame version at all (assuming we get funded) will create more environmental than it not existing. Perhaps selfishly, given most of what we do is wholly digital and ephemeral, we partly greenlit this out of a desire to have a physical manifestation of our work, as a lot of what we do now won't be accessible/playable at all in 5-10 years. But I'd argue, while we are in part positioning the game as a "port", the reality is we are bringing a lot of new stuff to the table that doesn't exist in the videogame such as multiplayer gameplay and interaction, more strategic gameplay, new characters, new artwork/models, physical presence/tangibility etc. It's a new experience that "feels" like the videogame in some aspects because it shares some familiar content and high level concepts, but ultimately it is a new experience and one that will reach new audiences. The same is probably true of any IP moving from a more digital form such as film, digital comics, or videogames into the board game space. I guess, you could step back and ask a similar question for a lot of IP and media, for example "do collectable figurines of movie characters need to exist when the movie exists"? More on the nose would be "should DVD/Bluray versions of movies exist when digital copies are available"? That's getting well beyond the scope of your more specific raised point, but worthy of conversation (elsewhere) as we collectively enter a more dire climate situation. So, to summarize, we usually consider the environmental impact when running our company, but we haven't in this case because it didn't occur to us to as this is an unusual exercise outside the norm for us. However, ultimately this will be a niche, low volume enduring product that should have limited net environmental impact, and we can review our manufacturing and materials plans to see if there is opportunity to reduce that impact further. And we feel it is not redundant relative to the existing videogame series as it is (we feel) bringing something new and interesting to both the IP itself and the board game space in terms of gameplay and content. Hope that answers you question.

Wanted to post that our studio has "ported" one of our videogames, Into the Dead, to a board game, and the Kickstarter went live yesterday with a "core" box reward tier and a "deluxe" box reward tier. Our first board game though we've collaborated with a board game design company, one designer of whom was actually on the design team for the original Into the Dead videogame. We are on track to start unlocking stretch goals in the near future, and there is quite a bit lined up we'll be looking to throw in for free through that (first stretch goal is an additional 30 minis, extra game board, and some gameplay tokens, for example). If you have had your fill of zombie board games, there are some preview and review videos at the bottom of the campaign page that go through the (prototype) game in detail why this game feels quite different versus the existing popular zombie games. Deluxe version currently looks like this I'm a step removed from the team and not actively supporting backers on the campaign itself, but happy to answer any questions anybody has here.

Not in my experience, at least not if you'd added some tomato paste or sauce which will help keep things moist,. Refrigerating/freezing will make some of the fats and oils congeal which can look unappealing, but that melts back in and through once you reheat. To defrost from frozen, if you wanted to avoid microwaving, I'd suggest moving from the freezer into the refrigerator a day or morning before you want to use it, or leaving on the bench for a couple of hours. I tend to like reheating in a frypan which can add a nice caramelization.

Looking at your current favourites, I'd probably suggest an easy, cheap, and versatile addition for college life would be to cook a batch of chilli or flavoured beef mince on the weekend, and then divide into portions to refrigerate and/or freeze. You can then easily reheat a portion at a time and add to macaroni/lasagna/spaghetti for a pasta dish, use as the filling for tacos/burritos/wraps, eat with chips/guacamole/sour cream/cheese, or even just eat on its own out of a bowl. And pretty much all of those only require 10-20 minutes work if you already have the chilli done. And a batch of chilli itself probably only takes 20-30 minutes work depending on how much depth/complexity you want in it flavour wise, though you'll need enough time to allow it to simmer on the stove for a while.

I have no doubt between the campaign team and the administration that there are a whole lot of laws that have been broken. Trump has surrounded himself with over confident career grifters, greedy but ill informed opportunists, and lazy ladder climbers that I can't believe laws haven't been violated, both intentionally and unintentionally, between an expectation of the limited scrutiny they'd been used to, ignorance of campaign finance and foreign power laws, and the sheer amount of money and power on the table. However, I can see Donald Trump has a couple of things that might insulate him from any (or at least some) prosecution. Firstly, between his laziness making him delegate everything, his lack of use of technology (specifically email), and probably some sense of self preservation, I can see that there might be a lack of hard evidence that ties all the way back to Trump himself. Secondly, so much of what might have been happening might have been happening without Trumps knowledge, especially if there were people skimming money out of the inauguration. Trump seems like exactly the sort of boss that probably gets scammed a lot by his own people - ready to believe anything, not detail oriented, quick to blame scapegoats for failures, egotistical enough to ignore bad news - he is a prime target to be scamming money from right under his nose, whether as a businessman or a politician. Some number of people are going to be taken down for the various law breaking. But Trump himself might mostly skate through because of either or both of the above. Even if he does, as time goes on while the growing scope of investigations is revealed and the number of guilty pleas increases, looks like chances are that things will get close enough to home that the family and the businesses will be cut off at the knees.

You'd probably lose another 10-25% of those remaining in the first year between the immediate accidents, fires, chemical spills, suicide, looting and armed robberies, inter country and civil wars, famine and death due to collapse of food and health services pipelines, etc. On top of a fearful and confused population, between lost practical knowledge and specialists, depleted numbers of first responders, and a short term decrease in the availability of labour and physical resources, a majority of local economies, local governments, and financial systems would likely collapse. Possible we'd never recover. At best it would take decades for things to return to some sort of normal similar to today. Besides the convenient shadow (which is plausible given how soft hotel room lighting tends to be), also worth considering that if the Russian plan was to catch “bedroom action” on film, the spy camera is a little low as you can’t see the surface of the bed, and if there was someone lying down you pretty much wouldn’t see them or any action. So, quite the coincidence that the footage is framed that way. Indeed, if Trump was going to drag a chair over to the bed, he probably would have done it to the closer near side rather than into the corner, and he wouldn’t have been in shot at all.

Not sure I'd waste it in a sandwich though. Other steak can, on occasion, come close if you luck out on the marbling with the right cut and have it prepared right. That happens once in a blue moon though.

You are most of the way to a part answer here. Netflix getting new subscribers is important, and new (and exclusive) content is part of that strategy, but also important for them to be bringing enough new content to the table to keep existing subscribers reupping. If they do just enough to keep you on the hook (as you imply they are), then this sort of film is doing its job.

I'm not sure if there will be any more updates. The game didn't do well enough post featuring to support the studio as I understand it, and the team has split up - we've hired one of the programmers last week, and a couple of others were picked up by the Mini Metro team. Possible it gets folded into the Mini Metro portfolio and updated from there, as they were sort of under their wing.

My guess is that it's more about "control" than helping obfuscate shenanigans. Shenanigans are a given any though. I think this is good for Democrats longer term though, assuming Trump loses re-election. He taints every organization through poor staffing choices, misguided strategy/policy, and a sprinkling of illegal activity. The RNC will have a lot of work to do to repair the damage when Trump and cronies abandon everything after a loss, work they need to do potentially under the shadow of investigations. If he ends up winning re-election, then he has done the right thing by himself as he is even more entrenched as Republican politicans are even more beholden to him.

To me, looking at it from the outside, it seems like since 9/11 the (white) celebration of "freedom" in the US has slowly converted into idolatry of the military, police, and the flag, which are symbols of "freedom". A large part of the population couldn't articulate what "freedom" means, doesn't known that the US isn't at the top of most freedom indexes, and/or considers their lifestyle and "freedoms" are under attack or otherwise being impinged upon. So they now clutch at these symbols as a tangible thing in a society and culture which is changing around them, and attack any perceived slight or criticism of the symbols. If you asked somebody on the side of "Stand for the flag!" whether it was more important in the US that there was a free and independent press or that players all stand during the anthem, I'd wager they'd say the latter every time.

Thread Working in the gaming industry?
The industry can be a great place to work. People are generally very friendly, open, and supportive. The work can be very creative and rewarding, especially relative to other things you could be doing. The refreshing of platforms and technologies keeps things interesting and creates ongoing opportunities to evolve and learn. Like any industry, there are good companies and bad companies. Once you get to the point of looking for a job, do your research. Bear in mind that there is usually little correlation between the working conditions and the quality of the games they produce i.e. some astoundingly great games have been built under horrendous conditions, while some teams with great culture and benefits can fly under the radar with “average” output. With respect to your specific talents and goals, game design does sound like the best fit. There are few roles for just a “writer”, and where such roles exist they will be on larger teams who will undoubtably be looking for somebody very experienced. There are different ways of approaching building your game design skills (formal education, gamejams, amateur/indie teams), so I’d do research around that and work out what my fit your circumstances. For reference, in our studio we have various people that do creative writing. This mainly falls on game designers for in game dialogue, cutscenes, background lore, game bibles etc. However, some creative writing is also done by video editors and our PR/marketing team. For most of them writing is only a small component of their overall role and responsibilities. Hope this helps.

I presume the FBI report is going to be delivered confidentially to the Committee? Given there is no way some of Kavanaugh's testimony isn't disputed, I can foresee Republicans on the Committee blocking the public release of the report, claiming there is nothing material while simultaneously claiming the need to hold back details. Democrat (and some public) outrage will ensue. They'll then either release a redacted version which Dems will complain about, or the report will leak. Either way Republicans will look bad. And probably more time will be burned. The best approach would be for them to be open and honest, admitting there was some inappropriate behaviour while still denying the core accusations, seeking an apology and moving on, as they should have done from the outset of this (and on Russia, and every other thing). But they can't help themselves, and in trying to seem squeaky clean, they'll make it worse than it otherwise would have been, just like on everything else.

Thread Telltale Games shutting down after Minecraft Story Mode [Update: TWD S4, ST, TWAU 2 cancelled]
I think in a world of self publishing and digital sales some studios have more of a lifeline than others as they'll have a baseline of month to month revenue they earn from the existing portfolio of content. It may very well be the case that ongoing sales can easily support Telltale in a 25 person configuration, perhaps even very profitably. Survival is certainly a possibility, and buys more time to try and line up external funding or new deals. Bouncing back from that is a lot harder though. Once you release a lot of your core talent, it is hard to either bring them back or rebuild a new team as uncertainty and the sting of the current situation will linger. Smaller development resources mean your ability to build new revenues streams is way down. And eventually the existing portfolio of content will start to wither and sales will fall further, especially as new platforms start to arrive. I can easily believe that as a company Telltale can survive this. Where they go from there is super hard to know though.

The bad: super Predator CGI/animation is not good, plot/character motivations and resultant actions of almost everyone don't make a lot of sense a lot of the time, jumps around a lot early on between scenes when could have done with some lingering If you can deal with "dumb fun" movies, then you'll probably enjoy it.

Thread Should Shatter be remade for current gen consoles?
Hey, nice to see someone say nice things about our games. We as a company are still around. We just shifted over to our "digital publishing" brand PikPok for the most part since 2010, while our "work for hire console" brand Sidhe was left to wither. We are mostly in the mobile space now (see ), and have had a lot of success there, with the team currently sitting at around 120 people. Indeed, managing to make the leap into self publishing and original IP saved us when a lot of similar "B tier" studios fell victim to the GFC. However, we are back in console, and in addition to mobile are working on stuff across PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch and "other platforms" right now. So, Shatter then... well, we've looked at a life for the game beyond where it was, and investigated bringing it to iPad a couple of times over the years. However, the code and visuals are a bit of a nightmare to port given some engineering choices. We haven't looked at a Switch version, and that may be a possibility but nobody has looked at it as we are slammed right now until the end of the year. We'd certainly appreciate people buying it on PC/Mac in the mean time. I did have a vision for a sequel too. The first game (if you follow the very subtle narrative) deals with a slave robot who is freed by a glitch in the system (there is a THX-1138 reference in the opening sequence even), journeys home to find his people frozen, and then embarks on a vengeance quest against the monstrous overlords (who says Breakout Plus can't have story!). I wanted the sequel to get more organic visually and have our hero bat deal with a strange creeping evil that was turning his people into zombies. It's fair to say no sequel would likely happen without teaming up with the soundtrack musician, Module. He is a musical savant who just had incredible creative ability. He performed the Shatter soundtrack live a couple of times, basically recreating everything manually in the moment But he actually stopped creating music entirely for years, and fell out of contact. BUT he is back! He actually released his first new album in a long time a couple of months ago and you can stream it for free here The original Shatter soundtrack can be streamed fro free here Anyway, thanks again for the kind words, and I have a few things to think about it seems.

I saw this last night as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival. Enjoyed it overall. It was psychedelic, lush, and juicy, and had a relatively simple but strong music backdrop. It was very different and it was out there, with shades of 70s exploitation, though the story didn't get quite as crazy as the trailer hinted and some reviews suggested. I can also see how some people will just absolutely hate it. The first two acts and certain scenes are paced fairly slow, and the final confrontation lacked a level of payoff. Some scenes could be interpreted as cheap or unnecessarily overstimulating or overly "artsy" and pretentious. Hard to recommend to anyone without having a deep understanding of personal tastes. The trailer I think is a pretty good indicator of how the film itself is, so suggest people base their decision to watch assuming it will be 2 hours of nothing more or less than that.

For anyone that has seen him in Hunt for the Wilderpeople he has good comedic chops for someone so young (TV ad where he delivers some of that too ). He just didn't have the right lines or scenes to fit what he is best at which was a shame. It isn't much, and it's a shame reality has to cut people off at the knees before they become self aware, but it is happening at least. Also, its "easy" to say you are willing to "take one for America" when your farm revenues have only been down for a month or two at this point. Overall, I think these balance changes will help me. Am running Miner, Princess, Musk, Giant, Valk, Minions, Arrows, and Fireball. Pretty old school deck. Hog Rider nerf is a welcome change for me. Plenty of times where the Hog gets just one last swing in before I take it out which I think will be less of an issue now. Goblins damage being reduced will help me overall, especially which me having a Giant as a main tank. And I'll be leveling my Giant to 11 in the next day or so as well, so a double win. Ice Golem often ties up my Valk and/or Minions and the reduced slow effect will help a little. Arrows and Fireball being nerfed against the tower sucks but in the scheme of things I doubt those particular changes will impact my overall strategy and win rate. My main problem deck seems like it will remain Golem beat down variants.

That's a wide range reflective of a lack of insight into how easy it may have been to get TPC/Nintendo across the line, but at the bottom end is what a solid developer should expect for a royalty on a third party funded project anyway and at the top end its closer to a licensing deal which is the model Niantic were pursuing. Any number in that range is going to have left them with a ton of cash. On top of that, they are the publisher of record with Apple and Google, so all of that revenue is going through their bank accounts which will have some residual financial upside which will be quite meaningful at that scale, especially if they are reporting and paying out royalties to TPC on a quarterly basis.

Thread Sicario: Day of the Soldado Rottenwatch
I saw this last night. Not sure I'd call the ending "happy" for anyone, though it had the opportunity to end on a more bleak note than it did. I enjoyed it overall for what it was, though preferred the first film. This one just kind of ended up not going anywhere in particular IMO.

For what it's worth, I'm still on an iPhone 7 but I got my girlfriend an iPhone X for Christmas. Even just casually looking at her screen and using her phone very occasionally, I got used to the notch after a couple of days and stopped "noticing" it within a month.

Thread Wild Wild Country - The most insane documentary I've ever seen
Finished watching this last night after a couple of nights. I didn't find it overly sympathetic to the cult as some suggest, so much as almost everybody involved just having their bad traits come out (though the doco did move past the criminal activity pretty quickly). The Antelope townspeople over-reacted to "change" right out of the gate, lacked any kind of understanding, were very judgemental, and advocating violence. The cult for their part developed a massive persecution complex, exaggerated the nature of every challenge to their efforts e.g. "they are trying to destroy us", and developed egos and power trips which ultimately manifested in attempted murder and mass poisoning. Hard to say whether the cult would have ended up where they did in terms of militarization and criminal activity without them and the townspeople (and the State) feeding back and forth off each other and escalating the situation. I suspect yes, eventually, but it wouldn't have been as fast. Was good at least that all those guns on both sides didn't amount to any deaths. My favourite was the jokey (ex?) mayor of Antelope who approached the whole thing with a sense of amusement. If more people involved had his attitude I think things would have been a lot smoother. I felt kind of sorry for the cult lawyer. He was still drinking the kool aid today. He seemed like he just needed to be hugged more often.

Finally had my dinner at Atelier Crenn in San Francisco on the weekend. 14 courses across 2.5 hours combined with champagne and the "mid range" wine pairing for one (split between myself and my girlfriend). Was heavily seafood based which isn't my thing typically, so a lot of courses didn't hit for me, but great overall experience and some of the dishes were exquisite. Think I'd try somewhere else at a similar price point before I returned for sure. Also, got to Luce and Alexander's Steakhouse while at GDC, both of which I'd been to before, so I was a little spoiled for great dining.

Have just stared watching Chefs Table on Netflix, about 4 or 5 episodes jumping around. Great insight and inspiration around cooking and food innovation if almost completely devoid of practical instruction and tips. In related fine dining news, I also made (and paid for) a reservation at Atelier Crenn, a two Michelin star restaurant in San Francisco for March. Will cap off the end of my week at GDC nicely as well as being the one year anniversary dinner for myself and girlfriend. Might be the highest rated restaurant I have ever been too and quite pricey, but hopefully worth it for the experience and only being in SF a couple of times a year.

I only took 9 photos last year of stuff I cooked, both a symptom of traveling so much I didn't cook as much as usual, and not taking photos of things I have made before. Hopefully, I'll at least deal with the first issue this year by making the time to cook. Some snaps below, including jalapeno poppers I grilled at the start of the year as part of a bigger barbeque spread, as well as my 3 favourite images/meals from last year - barbeque venison, Nutella french toast for dinner.

Following on from the post above which already leans in this direction, "curry powder" would go with it. Would add depth, a little colour, and a little heat which would go well with the sweetness of the pear on pork.

Thread Ant-Man and the Wasp |OT| It takes two to make a thing go right (Unmarked Spoilers)
I watched it this evening. I enjoyed it overall, although I liked the first film better. That being said, I felt the fight choreography was better in this. That first credits scene hit my theatre audience hard. And we all loved it.
