Thread The Dialogue Box, a new USgamer podcast hosted by Jeff Green
Ah, you noticed that :) Nothing against the very talented folks on the various gaming news pods throughout the industry. I just think the gaming podcast realm is very fertile territory for further experimentation and development.

Thread Final Fantasy VII Remake General Discussion Thread [Open Spoilers for Original FFVII ONLY please!]
Since all the previews are dropping, here's what I had to say over on USgamer "I guess my greatest hope for Final Fantasy 7 Remake is that it manages to maintain the suspense, the melancholy, and the deep sense of mystery that defined the original. I hope we get to see the scene where Aerith's adopted mother watches as returning soldiers go to their loved ones, but she is alone. I hope we get a feel for the rhythm of life in Midgar without being hit with flashbacks every few steps. I hope when Cloud and Aerith sit on the playground equipment and talk, they aren't suddenly assaulted by ghosts."

Thread Outriders (People Can Fly, Square Enix) Gameplay - Official Reveal Trailer (also coming for PS5 and XSX)
Here's my coverage in which People Can Fly talk about it whether or not it's games as service (they say it's not, despite the strong resemblance to... pretty much every service game) Stray thoughts - It's not much more of a cover shooter. More of an action game with unlockable skills that just happens to have cover shooter elements. Ignore any assertions that it's an RPG. Those bits are just to make it seem deeper than it is. - It's definitely balanced toward co-op play. Boss battles while playing solo are a slog. - This game is really hurt by a derivative art style that lifts way too much from Destiny (and Gears) - It's kind of fun in short bursts, and Square Enix is throwing a ton of money behind it. The LA event where it was shown to the media and influencers could not have been cheap to put on. To what end, I have no idea. It seems destined to be a pretty forgettable PS5/Xbox One Series X launch game that nevertheless gets a ton of money behind it. I hope it's as weird as People Can Fly claims it to be.

Thread USGamer's Top 100 Games of the Decade
Odd to see everyone get fixated on the positioning of The Last of Us of all games. It's a well-produced game that lifts most of its narrative from The Road; hits on some pretty banal themes, and has merely decent stealth action. Still, it made it into our Top 20 because it is in fact very well-made, and because Ellie has become an iconic character in her own right.

Thread USGamer's Top 100 Games of the Decade
Thanks! First of all, Papers, Please is one of the most influential indies ever made, and Lucas Pope is one of that scene's biggest stars. Second, it's just a master class in game design in the way that it introduces a relatively simple mechanic, then steadily builds on it until you're in a constant state of panic. Third, it's hilarious, which isn't something I feel like I can say about games as much I like. Fourth, it uses novel gameplay to critique authoritarianism, and the grim work of trying to balance your family's needs with those of the state that will stay with you for a long time. To be honest, I think it's one of the best games ever made--a perfect example of emotional storytelling through gameplay--and I think it's more relevant than ever.

Thread Death Stranding review embargo will officially lift on November 1 at 12:01AM PDT
Okay, but here's the piece: I would understand if it was just about being anxious about a game being good. But it's really about score keeping. There is a tribal obsession among very online gamers over seeing, say, Breath of the Wild have the highest MC ever. Or Horizon Zero Dawn beating out whatever other big exclusive is coming out. I would be anxious about knowing whether a game is good too. It's the over the top obsession with Metacritic averages that gets me.

Thread Death Stranding review embargo will officially lift on November 1 at 12:01AM PDT
Fwiw I was thinking about the broader discourse with those tweets, not Death Stranding specifically (it was WWE 2K that sort of sparked it, actually). I will, however, be rolling my eyes when I read the review day thread here on Era where people provide continual updates on the Metacritic average, like it's somehow the be all and end all. You know what the main thing I heard about that HZD review was? Not, "I disagree with this review because of this point, this point, and this point." It was, "Fuck you, you ruined the MC average and kept it below 90."Here's a secret: reviews don't do that much traffic, even a super negative one for a hyped game. And I can't speak for other sites, but most reviewers I know care a great deal about game criticism and would never throw out a score just for shock value.

Thread You are given the power to revive one classic JRPG franchise out of Suikoden, Chrono, Breath of Fire and Ogre Battle. The others will never return.
Let them all stay gone. Any modern revival would surely just be disappointing. ... Okay, I'd take a Suikoden sequel.

Thread Retronauts Podcast Thread
I started replaying TIE Fighter after doing the pod, and I found myself loving the cutscenes all over again. There will never be another game like TIE Fighter, honestly. Star Wars games now lean much more into the myth, where TIE Fighter was more about the day to day of running a Galactic Empire. It's more Heinlein than Lucas.

Thread Truly atrocious reviews.
The kicker was that EA was very aware of Sim City's late game problems, and so geared all of its preview and review events to ensuring journos didn't have a chance to see what a shitshow the endgame was. Ever notice that there are a lot more unscored review-in-progress write-ups for games like these now? it's cause outlets don't want to fall into that trap again.

Thread Your dream games, and the likelihood they might ever exist.
A new X-wing or TIE Fighter game. Seems unlikely given that EA has the license and those games are niche and hard to monetize.

Thread Why people say Persona isn't niche, but games like Xenoblade and Dragon Quest (in the west) are?
Dragon Quest has historically had a pretty small fanbase in the U.S. regardless. Xenoblade Chronicles is a cult favorite that broke out on Wii but never got much mainstream attention, especially with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 getting mixed reviews from some major sites. Persona 5 benefited from glowing reviews, months of hype from influencers and major sites, and massive and vocal fanbases in both Japan and the U.S.

Thread Do you listen to music while gaming?
Depends on the game. If it's a tactics game or an RPG, I tend to play while watching a show or listening to a podcast. If it's an action-adventure game or a shooter, I definitely prefer to hear the in-game sound.
