Thread Has Microsoft/343's tight-lipped approach to Halo Infinite increased or decreased your interest in the game?
The statements Infinite has made so far are promising, I love that they've reverted back to the original Chief design. That said Halo 4 is probably the most disappointing sequel I've ever played and while Halo 5 has its merits, it wasn't for me. I don't have much faith in 343 but I like everything shown of Infinite thus far. I'm interested but cautiously.

Thread PANZER DRAGOON: Remake |OT| Same Tower, New Power
Previous games indeed weren't like that, cursor had 3D depth The dragon also has a distracting bouncing animation every time it flaps its wings whereas the original was largely static, it just gets in the way and makes movement feels a bit chaotic

Thread PANZER DRAGOON: Remake |OT| Same Tower, New Power
I'm really not very impressed, the basis of the original is still there but so much of what made it visually distinct is lost. The opening used to feel like you were soaring through an endless ocean with little but crumbling ruins and their reflections to guide your path The remake clutters this ocean with lots of needless background material and for some reason the iconic reflections are completely gone And why isn't the aiming reticule 3D? It layers ontop of the dragon and looks super cheap. I mean the game's still Panzer Dragoon so there's fun to be had but the original is so much better artistically imo. I can't see this standing the test of time.

Thread Do you skip Optional Areas/Quests?
Depends on the quality If sidequests aren't worth/don't respect my time then I probably won't do them. On my initial playthrough of a game I usually just do whatever and play at my own pace, I'll then go back and find what I missed if I feel the game still has more to offer. With Souls games I do absolutely everything as there's rarely a drop in quality

Thread Nintendo Direct Speculation |OT5| But why? OT4 was still selling...
I'm tired of the whole thing tbh, public teasing is just clout chasing and it feels like every month there's a new person on Twitter leading people on and they fall for it every time. Sometimes these accounts clearly don't have anything but because they've defined themselves entirely around "being an insider" they still have to pretend they have something. I find them pathetic quite frankly. We have some legitimately great people on this forum who aren't wreckless with what they know nor do they seek "internet fame" - they just want to add to the conversation which feels wildly different to whoever the flavour of the month on Twitter is. That's also part of the reason many have stopped teasing though, "insider culture" is becoming a bit of a joke and with information being drip fed fans get kind of wild. You used to go under the radar posting something on Era, now you end up getting articles about it.

Thread PCGamer: "Temtem is even better than Pokémon"
It's almost unfair Temtem is being put in this position because it's invetibly going to disappointment with these expectations. The scale is very ambitious for an indie game and it offers something different to Pokémon with its MMO elements. The greater design elements though are very hard to compete with, Temtem's creature designs for instance are decent for what they are but they aren't on the level of Pokémon - and creature design is a major pilar of what makes these games so good. I hope the developers do well for themselves. I don't think they should have to be competing head to head with a media giant.

Thread Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Downloadable Contents Discussion Thread 9 | New Decade, Same Old Debates
Not just predicting but obviously leaking The main reason we've been predicting Nintendo characters for the last few months is indeed variety. I think the broader Smash community gets caught up in convincing themselves certain characters are likely when there isn't really much evidence either way. Game releases don't typically line up with Smash characters, companies aren't trying to pull off elaborate ruses by teasing announcements for games unrelated to Smash and so on. If anything Smash choices like Joker and Phirana Plant should show that the least likely options are just as possible as highly demanded fan favourites. It's kinda exciting that anyone is possible tomorrow.

True but playing as Link again would go against the context BotW1 had. Link lost his memory and had to essentially train up again explaining his lack of abilities. The subscription service largely exists because outside of a few exceptions people just weren't buying virtual console games on Wii U and 3DS. There may obviously be reasons for that like Wii U's poor emulation but I think a lot of people were done rebuying the same games. GameCube remasters still seem to sell as well as new releases if Wind Waker and Twilight Princess were anything to go by so why saturate them? The subscription isn't being handled the best but it's a far more modern approach than Virtual Console.

Switch is nearing 50m and hasn't even had a price cut or consistent bundle. If numbers start to get shakey those would both be the go to methods to maintain momentum but otherwise just games games games. It isn't showing any signs of slowing down just yet. Also nah I don't think next gen systems will have much of an impact, people accept the compromises because of what Switch is and I can't see that changing with the competition maintaining their existing form factor. We of course don't know their 2020 lineup but Animal Crossing alone is going to be giant. So far Switch software sales have been exceeding their 3DS counterparts and New Leaf sold even more than Smash 3DS

I personally don't believe the evidence either way, it's too similar to the Ken leak and combining both DOOM & Mario RPG representation in one video feels like it's trying to capture confirmation bias - like if you wanted someone to believe your fake, this is how you would do it. That being said the actual work behind the video is convincing

Absolutely and I believe sites like Metacritic don't help with this. People care too much about the average number when really that number means nothing on its own. We shouldn't be trying to find an average or consensus but rather finding a reviewer who's thoughts may resonate with your own. You can't get that with a number.

I love DOOM on the 32X. Maybe it's just because of how accessible it is and how quickly it boots up but I can never get enough. It controls pretty great, runs well enough and I don't think the music is that bad. It's a great port of DOOM.

I think it all comes back to number consensus. If one site decides to use the full scale in which a 6 is considered pretty good, people unfamiliar with the outlet will assume they hate the game. Unfortunately when places like a Metacritic exist it's very hard to break out of the current mindset.

Thread Death Stranding - Review Thread (see staff post for discussion guidelines)
The back and forth complaining about games meeting a number consensus is why I hate review scores. The consensus isn't even important, as long as you resonate with the voice of a review and feel their thoughts may mirror you own - that's all you need to take into account. Meanwhile the confirmation bias is pathetic as always, IGN currently have more dislikes than likes from people (who haven't played the game) dropping by to express anger that IGN shared their honest opinion. Who really cares if someone scores it low, no game is going to be for everyone. It's healthy to have a wide array of opinions

Thread Breath of the Wild is the most overrated game of all time - VG Culture HQ
I do think there's an argument that weapon durability isn't a great mechanic in certain games. It's so minimally implemented into Dark Souls that you just kind of pay the repair fee whenever you're at a blacksmith without ever thinking about it, it's not like you change your weapon all too often. I guess Breath of the Wild is more similar to an arena shooter. You're eventually going to run out of Battle Rifle bullets and you'll need to pick up whatever else you can, even if all you can find is the Halo 3 Magnum. I personally love that kind of approach to shooters and BotW is essentially the very same thing.

Thread Breath of the Wild is the most overrated game of all time - VG Culture HQ
I can see why some people don't like the concept of durability but it serves an important purpose. Breath of the Wild is all about improvisation in terms of both exploration and combat. You can't ride a horse forever and you can't walk in a straight line forever. Combat works in much the same way where you need to experiment with your surrounding and use whatever you have on you - if you had a weapon that couldn't break then the combat system is suddenly a lot more tedious. I somewhat believe the Master Sword delivers that feeling as in the late game it's likely to recharge inbetween major encounters, contradicting the purpose of durability.

While I have very little interest in streaming games, I will say xCloud has been the most promising by far. Game Pass has already shown an unparalleled level of value and I have a lot of faith in everything they've shown from xCloud thus far. PS Now has been around for a while and made very little impact, even if they've clearly made strides put it on the map lately. I used PS Now to test out Ico after loving The Last Guardian, it was serviceable but I ended up playing on native hardware instead. I have no interest in Stadia.

Whatever feels satisfying in the context of the game Puyo Puyo Champions is $10 and can provide you with hundreds of hours of fun - does that diminish a $60 game that clocks out at 10 though? 6 hours can be too long for a game and so can 20 hours. There isn't really a definitive answer to this. Celeste for instance was my GOTY of last year but it wasn't my most played game by a long shot. I also probably wouldn't have paid $60 for it as I think we generally hold that price for games with high production values with few other attributes really being in consideration. TLDR - Any

I think the series is more deserving than most. It's one of the most prominent franchises in Japan but has never quite had that Western push. For instance if Steve gets in then great - but it does nothing for the Minecraft brand. Smash could do for Dragon Quest what it did for Fire Emblem. I think both Square and Nintendo want that, especially given Nintendo's long history of publishing DQ games. So yeah, I don't think any of us are against it. Plus DQ tracks rearranged by composers who aren't terrible people? Count me in ;)

I don't think the point is to collect all 900 Moons in Odyssey, the point is the abundance of them. To go in basically any direction and have something to do. You only need like what, 250 to finish the game? Less than that? I don't think it's fair to call them padding, there's a good reason to have so many of them. But yeah I can't agree about Sunshine being better, I can't even agree that it's a good game. It has some of the worst level design of any 3D Mario and outright feels unfinished in areas. The abundance of Moons is also a good comparison to Sunshine's rigid structure where you can't finish the game without first getting to a certain Shine in each level. Would you rather have plenty of choice or no choice? Wasn't choice the point of Mario 64's hub in the first place?

Thread Super Mario Sunshine is a better game than Mario Odyssey, if you ask me
Indeed but you do lose the non linear approach to Sunshine's progression that Mario 64 had. You can still jump from level to level but a lot of the Shines are mandatory this time. You have choice in both Odyssey and 64, in the case of the latter you can avoid entire levels if you want. I agree the blue coin argument is overblown as it's only really for Completionists

I feel like I explained that. Levels are larger than ever and the point is no longer about 6 objectives per level, it's about exploring every nook cranny and finding something everywhere. Pretty much guaranteed but their timeframe doesn't have to be soon. ALTTP for instance could be a 2020 remake and not be announced until after Link's Awakening releases (or it could be something else entirely). They previously listed Smash for Switch 7 months before its announcement

I don't think Prime Trilogy makes sense as an imminent release. The game is meant to continue the momentum until Prime 4 but Prime 4 barely exists now. Maybe 2020?

Thread PSA: Sony is planning to take the ENTIRE Driveclub franchise off the Playstation Store on August 31st, server shutdown also planned for next year.
It's worrying. PSN isn't cheap, £49.99 a year is a pretty high hurdle - especially when Xbox Live is £10 less and arguably offers more (broader crossplay being one). So why are they continuing to close down servers with such a high online revenue stream? There were 90m active PSN users as of January. I get closing servers in the next console generation when you basically have zero activity but it's a harsh trend for online Sony games. Gravity Rush 2 didn't even last 2 years, MAG lasted 4 years, Driveclub lasts 5.

Thread Games with most satisfying UI/menus/inventory screens/etc?
Metroid Prime's map is still one of my favourite takes on 3D navigation. Being able to rotate it in 3D space really benefits the vertical design that many of the rooms have.It also maintains Samus' visor in the UI which makes it feel like it's actually being displayed to Samus.

Thread What's the best Pinball spinoff?
Metroid Prime was good and all for reimagining Metroid in 3D but Metroid Prime Pinball reimagines that reimagining as a Pinball table. Prime Pinball - 1 Prime - 0 Not only does the soundtrack kick all kinds of butt but the tables themselves capture the vibes of their source material extremely well. Heck, Samus as a ball just makes sense. The dual screen setup helps in assisting with the verticality of a pinball table and it's something I'd love to see done again on Switch in tate mode. Nudging the table with gyro would also be sweet. This isn't about creating a sequel to Prime Pinball though (even though that would be mighty swell), it's simply about admiring the best portable Metroid Prime game. So what's your favourite Pinball spinoff? There's quite a few out there but I don't think I've encountered anything that appeals to me quite in the same way as Prime Pinball.

The issue I'm seeing is people are comparing it to a traditional VR set - it's still a toy like other Labo kits and isn't even attempting to offer a mainstream form of Virtual Reality. The unique point of Labo VR is how the peripherals become an extention of the headset but of course the actual VR experience isn't going to be high quality - and I don't think it's trying to be.

Sure but if I point out a debunked rumor from Jason then will you suddenly believe the latter? Of course not because this is all just a case of who said what. For instance Jason claimed to have a source on Star Fox Grand Prix which is another game that appears to have vanished - or according to some sources never existed in the first place. No one has a perfect track record and we shouldn't take anything at face value until we see it announced by Nintendo or Microsoft.

You know exactly what this enables though. People will be going through his history and sending him personal attacks. Jason's been in this circle a long time, he knows better than this. The worst part is all of this is still just a rumor. Just because one person claims the opposite doesn't change a thing until it's official.
