Thread Nintendo Direct Speculation |OT7| March Madness
The reason I said it wasn't a mini is because of the games I thought Nintendo was showing up with. I don't know why Nintendo is holding back on its 2020 lineup, but my guess is the same as everyone else's: playing it safe in an uncertain environment due to COVID-19. My guess is that Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is the only other big release until the faux-E3, and then the other games I'm hearing about will follow quickly after that. The good news there is that it should be a pretty darn packed summer Direct as long as development doesn't get too disrupted. That said, I'm not trying to get your expectations sky high. I don't think this year is going to match 2017, and Nintendo is going to continue relying on HD remasters -- but maybe in a bigger way that ever before.

Thread What does a prolonged economic downturn do to this industry?
Free-to-play is not really about whales anymore. It's about lifetime values of $20 and then spending less than $20 to acquire those users. Expect the next wave of free-to-play to look like Warframe and Fortnite and not just gachapon and lootboxes.

Thread Take us to the moon RTX update out now (huge DLSS improvements)
DLSS continues to get better even in games where it started out blurry. The Metro implementation is great now. I used it in Control -- especially since I was playing on a TV -- and it was good. People are like, "lol just use radeon image sharpening" but it's not the same at all. DLSS is repairing visual data that isn't actually there instead of just making low-res surfaces look sharper.

Thread The economy looks fine, but is it really?
NPROK? That is not mutually exclusive with what I said. . And we absolutely did spend our way out of those recession fears from the summer. Initial reports about holiday spending do sound soft, but Thanksgiving was really late this year, and it's worth taking that into account. But yeah, maybe the report will come back and say that consumer spending was down YOY in November (probably) and December (no idea), and then sure, we can work from that data. Of course, I'll say that none of this macro shit matters if the economy isn't working for you. I write for an online media publication. Even in a good economy, I'm never confident about the stability of my job. And people in rural parts of the country never really got a recovery from the recession. So if you are worried about the economy, you probably have good reasons to do so.

It's not just the stock market that is doing well. Consumer spending is also strong, and that's why so many people think the economy seems strong. We were talking about recession a few months ago, and we literally just spent our way through those worries.

It is one of a very small handful of recent works in media to accurately portray racism in America. It's up there with BlacKKKlansman and, as good as it is, it's better than something like Watchmen in this regard. And even its wilder-than-Fast-and-Furious moments have something to say. I think the game mechanics were weak, but not bad enough to detract too much from its writing.

Thread When should Nintendo move on to a 1080p screen for Switch's successor?
ARE EYES GOING TO GET BETTER IN 2023?! What are you talking about? It doesn't matter what year it is or generations or anything. Your eyes cannot see the difference between 720p and 1080p at 6.5 inches unless you hold the screen right up to your eyeballs, which you wouldn't. If the screen size significantly increases, then maybe. But anything under 8 inches shouldn't go over 720p. It is physically pointless.

Thread When should Nintendo move on to a 1080p screen for Switch's successor?
But you sit close enough to a 24-inch monitor to notice the difference between 720p and 1080p. The difference between 720p and 1080p at 6.5 inches is so tiny that you don't notice. This is why almost all mobile games run at 720p. People wouldn't notice the increased resolution and it saves battery life. I'm not making this up. I know marketing makes people think that the bigger number is better, but at a certain point more megapixels won't make your camera better.

Thread When should Nintendo move on to a 1080p screen for Switch's successor?
This is so pointless. The Switch already has a PPI of 234 (Lite has 267). That's more than enough for gaming and better than most other displays used for equivalent gaming. A 55-inch 4K TV only has an 80 PPI.

If the screen increases to, like, 8 inches. Otherwise, a 1080p screen on a handheld is a complete waste of battery/processing. You won't see the difference between 720p and 1080p on the current-sized screens.

Thread Nvidia, DLSS and Nintendo
"It just works" was never about DLSS. That was about ray tracing, and that was in comparison to an artist baking lighting into every scene. DLSS was always going to require a lot of time because Nvidia has to run the game for hours on its supercomputers to teach the algorithm. That's why Metro Exodus's DLSS implementation has improved since release. But Control is excellent at launch. Sure, it's a slow adoption, but teaching a game to add information that isn't present in the actual render based on an algorithmic understanding of what a game looks like is a smart idea that still has a ton of potential and a couple of solid examples.

RSS, my man. RSS is an older tech that enables sites to create a link that people can subscribe to. All podcasts have an RSS feed that other podcast apps simply latch onto to get the updates as they roll out. This is one of the reasons podcasts are so important because it's one of the best ways to make money on the Web with media content without having to exist on a platform owned by Google or Facebook. No. Mass Effect Andromeda was a disaster single-player game that EA and BioWare abandoned. Anthem is a game that BioWare and EA can salvage through updates specifically because it is a live-service. Let's assume they required the same amount of work to make. With Andromeda, they had to abandon all of that investment. With Anthem, they have a chance to extend the return on the investment. Thread Digital games feel like a scam (sometimes)
And there are increases in development costs and inflation, but I'm not going to argue that game prices should go up. Pricing doesn't work like that. Publishers are going to charge as much as they can get away with. They're going to do what is best for their bottom line, and we should do the same. That means wait for sales or buy physical when you have the option or only buy a digital game if you're sure you want it. But if your boss came to you and said, "hey, I see that you're taking the bus to work now. You must be saving a lot of money on gas, so we're going to pay you less." They don't need to be cheaper. You want them to be cheaper. But you don't have to buy them. And you know exactly what you're getting before you buy, which would make it exactly not a scam. If you don't think a digital game is worth the price someone is charging, then don't pay for it.

Relative to Microsoft and Sony, it's unique. Porting is easy, and that's a good thing. But Sony and Microsoft would probably struggle to switch to ARM now, which means Nintendo kinda owns this portable hybrid space due to the power draw of typical x86 designs. For sure. But Switch is its home console, too.

Sure. But I haven't seen a single person here say, "this makes me feel bad because I bought the $200 edition." The people who did do that should keep asking for more back from Bethesda -- although they should probably just focus on the misleading advertising and not "someone else got a better bag." But if we didn't buy the collector's edition, we don't need to hypothesize what those who did are feeling. We can recognize objective reality. This is the motivation behind this entire thread.

All of those bullet points are all just part of the game's marketing budget. Now, that doesn't matter to the people who paid for one thing and got another, but we don't need to act like these things are connected when they're probably not. The screwup doesn't need to keep escalating, and trying to force a connection between a marketing swag bag and fulfilling customer orders just makes this look like a bunch of people who probably didn't buy the $200 edition using this as an excuse to yell at a company that made a bad game.

This almost certainly means that the cost and supply of cotton in China (where these bags would come from) is hurting. I don't get why this is the point of contention. There probably was a cost issue with the bags. But who cares about the excuse? The only thing that should matter is that Bethesda didn't alert customers to the change.

You're right. They don't always turn into disasters. I guess I meant to say that it's weird that bad games have the potential to turn into disasters at all. Battlefront 2 was a horse of a different breed, but like, Fallout 76? Who cares? I think the people in charge of SIE right now are not exactly the nostalgic type. Like, Shawn Layden only seems proud of the games he worked on, and he doesn't seem to have fondness for them as games. Instead, he treats them as projects on his CV. I don't think there is a single thing wrong with that. He's a professional executive. That's totally fair. But it just isn't in line with what fans think of when they think of Sony and its past.

I'm not saying it's guaranteed a win because lul Sony fanboys. But there's no obvious Nintendo game except for Smash. And Smash is like Bloodborne in that it will have its loud, passionate fans, but that group is slightly smaller than the fandom overall. Thread Why is RDR2's Online not factored into its reviews?
I get what you're saying, but you're working backward from the viewpoint of "reviews matter." This isn't the Olympics or a court of law. Most reviews are purchasing guides. In those cases, they need to come as close to the release as possible. If things change over time, it's easier to note those changes in news stories. But the majority of people are going to be looking for buying advice on the day of release. Other reviews are pure criticism. In that case, they aren't going to care what is going to change in the future. The game is out now. It is worthy of criticizing now. No one who reviews games for a living is thinking that their review score is the final say on anything. So the idea that they need to wait to appropriately assess some vague notion of a complete package doesn't make any sense.

I don't trust reviewers' takes on story and writing, and I get paid to do it. The thing is that story is rarely going to make or break a game. If a review is focused on a game's story, it's really not doing me any good. Even if it's a critical analysis. I need to know how the game is conveying meaning through action and mechanics. That's a thousand times more important.

That seems like a flimsy argument. Isn't the warning about bugs specifically about the beta? I've played an hour of the beta, and I still have no idea if this game is going to work. I need to know what a fully kitted out crew of players can do to mess with other players. What's the end game? How elaborate can my interactions with other people get? Having those questions unanswered is maybe slightly similar to No Man's Sky -- especially if the answers are "you can't really do any of that stuff." But I would need to put 30 hours into it just to know for sure.

They two different conversations. The most important difference is that one matters and the other is completely meaningless. "This game sold a lot of copies regardless of its budget and expectations." Uh ... OK. Who does this matter to? Maybe people on message boards care, but they shouldn't. Talking about a number without putting it into context is a waste of time. It would be like saying, "I reached a velocity of 1,037 mph!" But I left out whether this was a drag race or on a plane or something else. 1,037 mph is always fast? I don't think you would feel that way if you realized I was talking about the speed I reached while standing still as the Earth rotates on its axis. If the point that everyone is making is, "NO! 3.4 million is always a big number! 15 million is always a big number!" then I think we are communicating in a fundamentally different way. My point is that a sales number is big if the people who spent the money getting that number think it's big. That's the relevant context.

No. Blackout is devoid of tension. Shooting feels weak and basic. The sound design for getting shot at feels cheap. Obviously you don't. OK. Rockstar has other games. GTA Online virtually guarantees its financial stability for the foreseeable future. RDR2 could sell 8 copies, and Rockstar would be able to weather that. That does not mean that RDR2 would be a success or a positive return on investment if it sold only 8 copies. Shutting down a studio does not equal the only failure state. The game has to reach a certain threshold to justify a RDR3, for example. Or to justify any non-GTA Online product. For RDR2, that threshold is really high.

Thread Why does everyone assume Read Dead Redemption 2 is a guaranteed to have massive sales?
It actually is what I said. But "massive sales" doesn't have one singular definition. 11 million is massive for some games, but it wasn't massive for Infinite. And it certainly wouldn't be enough for RDR2. I figured most people on this board would inherently understand that. Games don't spring fully formed out of the ground. Developers create them by pouring money into them. And the more money you spend making it, the more money you have to generate in revenue to make that effort worth it. So acting like 11 million in sales is always huge doesn't make any sense. It's just a number. And that number doesn't mean anything. You're impressed by it? OK ... tell that to the people who got laid off because they made a game that only sold 11 million copies.

I didn't bring up my tweet in this thread. You did. That was only about satisfying my own curiosity, and it has nothing to do with this. But c'mon -- Irrational Games closed down months after releasing BioShock Infinite because the game didn't sell well enough. This is literally from the Plante piece you linked to: That isn't up for debate. To answer why I think BioShock Infinite is relevant, I see a lot of parallels between Red Dead Redemption 2 and BioShock Infinite. And I don't understand your point here: So because the game has taken even longer and costs even more money, it is somehow no longer anything like the best previous example of a game that took way too long with an inflated budget? Look, the point here is that before BioShock Infinite came out, no one considered the possibility that it wouldn't meet and then exceed sales expectations. It was a foregone conclusion that Infinite would become one of the best-selling games of all time. And I think people are making the same assumptions about Red Dead. And I get the reasoning here a bit more. Red Dead Online is going to perform exactly like GTA Online did ... but I don't know why we believe that's the case either. I think that's another assumption that people are just accepting as inevitable, when it really isn't. But OK. Sure. Bad example.

Exactly. People are making assumptions, and I point to Infinite as evidence that we should question those assumptions. I still think RDR2 is going to sell a lot. Don't have kids. It's cool. You don't have to. But I think your mental calculation of "how could having kids improve my life over having fun" is a byproduct of our generation having an infinite amount of entertainment options. But people decide to have kids today because having fun stops being fun. They find that using every free hour of the day to consume content is empty. I never would have imagined giving up watching TV, but lol that feels like such a water of time with a kid. Now, if you had said that you don't know how someone could give up their passion to create for having kids, I'd have more sympathy.
