Thread Summer Game Fest Twitter account teases comeback in 2021.
Hey guys -- All great feedback here, and yes, we are condensing the Summer Game Fest schedule down to less than a month this year. Still working out details. Believe me, I'd like to be able to take a vacation at some point this summer :) I share the feedback/thoughts around last year. COVID threw off everyone's schedules and plans, but I still thought it was important to do something, especially in a console launch year. One thing I've learned from game developers like Valve is the importance of iteration -- to start experimenting, learn and refine. The ideas of SGF are the future, and we're going to keep building on them. Of course I'm only one piece of the puzzle -- I have to take my cues from the game publishers/developers and what content is ready to show. One thing I will say: We are still in the middle of a pandemic and wfh conditions. As such, it's taking developers longer than normal to make games. By some estimates productivity is only about 50-60% of what it used to be. So, as we've already seen this year, there are lots of game delays. On a macro level that's coloring the situation of what games will be ready to show and when. In our mind's eye we'd all love 2 whiz-bang days of dozens of events that capture our hearts, but it's just not in the cards right now. That said I'm working had to find ways to bring everyone together this summer for industry showcases - -and we'll have the gamescom ONL show again in late August too. Geoff

Will be a fun show. I wouldn't go off that gamescom partner list as representative of who's in/not in ONL, there are 18+ publishers in the show. (Sadly no game from ESL!) We'll share more in the coming days....

That's a good question, as of now we weren't going to put every trailer as an "event" per se, but if you guys think it's valuable we can of course consider adding. We might add sort of a secondary tab? Agree there is value there, just don't want to spam people with too many things.

Correct,The calendar will give you all events (or you can select individual ones). The email notifications will be less frequent just to not spam your inbox.

Just to set expectations , we are not announcing every event across the entire summer today. The initial schedules events will be going up today with the ability to set reminders. Things will be announced on a rolling basis....a lot of this is being built in real time with the publishers. I am also going to be doing some pre/post shows for events with guests/etc., just like the old E3 times. More on that soon!

Thanks, glad you get it! It's a new idea, we will see how it goes. And I'll definitely be doing some shows and cool things around all this, lots to still announce! When you look back in September, I hope everyone will feel like it was a worthwhile endeavor.

Inside XRight, it's going to vary by game and platform and publisher -- especially this year with work from home conditions. I wouldn't expect that every major upcoming is giving you a demo by any means -- but eventually, I think we'll get there, especially with new streaming technologies, etc. The basic idea: Standing in line to play a video game at an event seems antiquated (and not very safe in today's climate). Of course in a new hardware year it's a little trickier, but I hope by TGA time in December we'll have some pretty cool ways to bring the announcements on stage to playable life. I have a lot of crazy ideas for "playable trailers" for games in the future. But those will take a few years :)

Have you heard of World's Fairs or Expos? Those run 3-6 months. I'm not sure why you think a "Festival" has to be any specific length. The advantage of digital is that things can run for much longer periods of time than a physical "destination" event.

Did Coachella release its schedule when it made the lineup announcement? (Narrator: No it did not). This is a free initiative, if you don't like it you don't have to give us a click to the website.

It's a different approach -- things weren't going to line up into one week. In fact you'll see some publishers do multiple events/touch points across the summer. It's not just about one 2 hour "press conference" anymore, think about playable content, extended looks at games, and so on. And we're certainly not programming things every day, there will be breaks. And in-game events and content too. When you look back across the summer at Labor Day, I hope you'll say "I got all the news I wanted, and played a bunch of cool things too." This is a container for all that, and we have some big surprises coming too. Today is just the initial announcement, the schedule on the website will launch next week.

Certainly thinking about it! It's really important to me that if we do anything, we're all going to do it all together as an industry. That's what the idea E3 represented to me -- everyone coming together to celebrate games. I'm only going to press "go" when I feel like we have something that properly represents our industry to the world. It's obviously a very challenging time right now -- a lot of teams are trying to figure out how to build their games under these new circumstances. In many ways games are more important than ever right now. Will keep everyone posted -- please rest assured there are lots of conversations happening. I'm a fan just like you guys and want to find a way to rally everyone around the right center of gravity.

Thread Geoff Keighley is skipping E3
I"m not trying to be vague about it -- a lot of factors played into it, hard to reduce it down to a soundbyte. I also want to respect and support the developers who will be at E3 this year, so it's a difficult situation. It ultimately wasn't the right fit for me this year; I have a different view of how the show should evolve. That said, it's hard to balance tradition with change....fixing E3 isn't an easy overnight solution. As a few have noted we are already hard at work on the gamescom: Opening Night Live show for August and really excited about it.

Thanks. We can't always give you everything you want. I thought it was pretty cool to reveal the new Xbox and the first PS5 game. Ultimately we can only reveal what's offered to us by the game companies and what's in development. A bunch of stuff rumored was never even on the table for the show, like that supposed Batman game. Lots of bad rumors out there!

I get this concern and it's something I thought about. I don't vote on the nominees or winners, we have a separate jury handle that. I haven't played through DS, so your guess is as good as mine in terms of how it will do in the voting.

It's a totally fair question -- I appreciate that everyone takes the awards so seriously. I work so closely with developers across the industry on world premieres and other projects that I am happy to not vote. Plus, I get so busy with the show I honestly don't have enough time to play all the November games until post-show.

I don't vote on the nominees or winners for the Game Awards -- we have a separate panel. It's not just because of DS, but in general it's better that I am not involved to avoid any conflict of interest concerns.

Just to comment: We have TONS of game developers on stage. Many we can't announce because it might give away their games. You'll see LOTS of familiar faces for some of the announced games too, like Casey Hudson introducing Anthem, the guys from Obsidian introducing their game, and so on. But I also love bringing other names by who want to be there to celebrate games -- these people are all joining us for legit reasons. It makes our industry bigger. Wait until you see the Orchestra this year. Gonna be a fun one! Lots more news tomorrow too :)

Thread The Game Awards Prediction Thread |OT|
Just to clarify this point -- With the growth of games as a service, last year we made a change to the rules. Games "released" in past years are eligible for Awards in all categories, so long as the work done on them in 2018 merits a nomination. This is not unlike how the Emmys recognizes "seasons" of a TV show. So yeah, there could be some scenario where Overwatch wins GOTY for a second time one year. We also have the "Best Ongoing Game" to specifically recognize these titles. It's ultimately up to the voting outlets to decide what deserves nomination, but we don't disqualify a game just because it shipped in a previous year.
