Thread NYT: The number of homes for sale in the USA has plummeted while home prices skyrocket and rents plummet
I've always been a little wary of buying in Los Angeles, because it's possible that in 2040 or beyond, the writing will be on the wall enough re: rising sea levels that the market may collapse. That said, I wouldn't mind a reasonably priced home. (sigh) Should have chosen a different area for that, I guess.

I've also gotten a hair transplant procedure and it's just about this good (though I didn't start from *that* bad a point). Depends on method (FUE vs. FUT), but should be somewhere around $4/$5 per follicle. With the OP's hair, I'd expect a doctor to recommend 2000-2500 follicles. Pricey, but honestly a miracle.

Thread Washington Post: First migrant facility for children opens under Biden
I'm sorry, but I do not find this sufficient. You're being snarky, but I could just as easily claim *you* want twelve year olds wandering the desert with no assistance or care. That's not a fair assumption, but if there is no solution offered to a problem, I would rather there be a system in place that can find homes and safe places for these children. They are *children*. I would see them cared for. And that does mean a twelve-year-old cannot randomly wander out of a door into the desert. This is a *separate argument* from "are these facilities currently actually safe", so please don't misrepresent me, thanks. They *need* to be safe, immediately, and at any cost.

Thread Washington Post: First migrant facility for children opens under Biden
From my perspective, yes. These are unaccompanied minors coming across the border. They need to be housed temporarily to ensure they have a safe place to go, to safeguard against child trafficking, and a whole host of other completely reasonable concerns that many posters have brought up in this thread. It also seems to last approximately a month. As long as the conditions are safe, comfortable, and very time-limited, I do not have a problem with this. Now, *are* they safe and comfortable and very time-limited? A reasonable concern. The images seem to be okay, but there is reason to be skeptical. But "OMG BIDEN LOCKING UP CHILDREN" is not a reasonable take, here.

Thread Washington Post: First migrant facility for children opens under Biden
If it is managed by a company with logged prior abuses, then that obviously needs to be addressed as quickly as possible. See my "safe, comfortable, and time-limited" comment above. But if you don't come up with an actionable plan to protect these children and ensure that child trafficking isn't running rampant, I can't take the "locking up children" thing seriously. Yes, twelve year olds cannot roam freely (in the...desert?), while we ensure that children have a safe place to go within our legal system. Please provide an actual alternative beyond "how about not locking them up", and I will be happy to consider it, but I don't see an easy way around it.

Completely agree with suggesting some sort of mod action with regard to ultra hot takes. Discussion revolving this sort of thing is at a horrendously base level. Thread Best turn-based RPG dungeons and good design principles?
Golden Sun and Lufia 2, of course, but shout-out to Crosscode. Admittedly, they can occasionally feel like puzzle gauntlets with the occasional bit of combat thrown in, but I had a blast moving through them. Interestingly, ALL of these games have a top-down 2-D approach, which allows for the player being able to trivially ascertain a room's layout, objectives, and goals. 3-D titles with more dynamic camera angles can make things more difficult in this regard, I think. Of course we still have games like Talos Principle, but would that sort of layout really work with enemy encounters? I'm unsure.

Thread Can someone help me understand how developers release games with consistently uneven frame pacing?
Unless I'm quite wrong, frame pacing issues can't really occur if every frame is under the target ms (as long as you're v-sync'ed). It's when a frame goes over that limit, and the hardware manages to "catch up" on other frames, that you can retain a target framerate but still have pacing issues. Or am I wrong? I thought that was the definition of it, I'm not sure how you could stay under the target and not manage to deliver frames on the v-sync every time.

Thread Can someone help me understand how developers release games with consistently uneven frame pacing?
To ensure either 60 FPS or 30 FPS with even frame pacing, EVERY SINGLE FRAME must come in between either 16.66 ms or 33.33 ms, every time, without exception. The possibilities of what's going on on screen are nearly endless. The player controls the action, usually the camera angle, and can be at any legal position in any level; a game could be rendering the character and a whole 64 polygons of the ground plane if you're looking straight down, or 72 characters and a wildly complex landscape if looking out over a higher cliff above a town, or something. You could start developing the game with "well we'll shoot for an average of like 7 ms so that even our most extreme outliers stay below 16.66 ms", but you're sacrificing a TON of visual fidelity to do that. In general, you want to eke every ounce of performance to make sure your game looks great, and if it OCCASIONALLY jumps above 16.66, well, most people aren't going to notice, and your game is still gonna look great in stills. Ultimately, as reductive as it sounds, game development is hard. Any given frame's timing is a nigh incomprehensible combination of geometry, draw calls, batching, fill rates, shader complexity, post process effects, particles, and that's assuming all the chaos on the CPU is never a bottleneck. Ultimately, it's just exceptionally difficult to manage, and it's very low on the priority list to ensure it just NEVER gets above that mark.
Published

(56082862)

Thread Can someone help me understand how developers release games with consistently uneven frame pacing?
Mmm, possibly. I was under the impression the delta-t issues didn't result in inconsistently delivered frames, but inconsistent delta-t values which would make things in motion look inconsistent even though the frames were on time. Which I suppose would have the same "juttering" effect to the player, even if the frames were always delivered right as scheduled.

I guess it's an improvement over previous Vanillaware titles, but ugh, I rolled my eyes every time she was on screen. If you're turned off by that stuff, you're well within your rights. If you're a busy/unsure/undecided voter in Georgia, the choice is simple: vote Democrat, and get $2000 and possibly much more. Vote Republican, and get $600 or nothing. Thread 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Spoiler Thread || Mechs, Adventures, and... Yakisoba-pan?
Well, that was a ride. - So, the Kaiju attacking was a predetermined war designed to...train...?...the fifteen for a rugged life on a new planet? Fucking...why? There are a million other ways you could train teenagers like this, and not potentially give them unbelievable PTSD for the rest of their lives? Why the massive back story of the attack coming from repurposes interstellar development machines, and all the other strange details and plot twists? Even if this was an unintended addition by Shinonome, I just don't get it. Edit: well, okay, I guess Shinonome did so in a villainous context. She activated part of Okino's borrowed code? But why all the craziness? Agh - Why did Gouto determine that Sector 0 would no longer work? Was it a gambit to deal with Ida? - Were they being reborn every sixteen-eighteen years for millions of years? Or did the cycle of rebirth only begin when the scout units found a suitable planet? I don't know, man. In one sense I'm impressed with the sheer NUMBER of sci fi concepts used here and still maintaining a somewhat cohesive narrative, but I can't help but think that a lot of this sort of falls apart under closer scrutiny. A ton of scenes felt repetitive, the constant "return" to a default state at the beginning of chapters made things unnecessarily unmemorable, and I feel like it could have used a strong editor to keep the best ideas and throw the bad ones out. I still really enjoyed it, but I don't know if I can classify it as one of the best video game stories of all time. Sometimes, a little simplicity can go a long way

Savage/ultimate raid mechanics in FFXIV almost always exceed Mythic in terms of pure complexity, at least from when I played. Any mistakes are punished harshly and you have to perform either extremely well or absolutely flawlessly to win. WoW's fights are often larger, and lend themselves more to improvising, but that sort of visual chaos doesn't do it for me. I prefer a smaller group and more personal accountability and effect. Plus, the visuals and music design in FFXIV encounters absolutely blow WoW out of the water, and yeah, that matters to me. The Patch 5.3 MSQ Extreme fight was one of the best fights in any game, ever. But whatever. You like what you like, I guess. But for me, it's not even a contest. Shadowbringers by itself is the single best Final Fantasy narrative of all time.

Thread LTTP: Final Fantasy VII Remake -- I REALLY don’t like it
Uncharted is a middling action schlock adventure with extremely high production values. It has no real merit as a "great story". It's popular. That's it. And yes, there's no reason why a good video game narrative wouldn't be interwoven into gameplay? Why wouldn't we want that? 999 has an incredible moment that would be literally impossible to capture without the interactive nature of the medium. It's special. Many other games do the same thing. As you say, holding the goalposts at "traditional cutscenes" is a disservice to the medium and not a fair comparison point. However, I do agree with you that it is somewhat wild to completely dismiss a game's value over narrative concerns.

You might as well point to Transformers: Dark of the Moon and say that movies have awful stories compared to novels. Go play the Legacy of Kain series, or Baldur's Gate, or Outer Wilds, or 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors, or Disco Elysium, or 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, or Ghost Trick, or What Remains of Edith Finch, or jesus christ I could name ninety games off the top of my head. But the snarky "you're not providing any killer analysis by pointing out they suck" smarm...no. Reviewers aren't there to be nice, they're to educate consumers if this product is worth their hard-earned dollars and time. This is a good point, but arguably it makes things even worse. Lots of people in this thread have advocated that Defund the Police is fine, you just need to explain it to people when they misunderstand. But there is a sizeable contingent who would explain it as something completely different. The messaging is incredibly garbled. It is not an impossible barrier but it makes things harder. Thread Barack Obama on Broad Slogans: "You lose people with 'snappy' slogans like 'defund the police'"
I respect your position but completely disagree. Sorry. Let's say Joe Biden had run an awful campaign. He didn't travel to the right states, he had awful messaging, he had a major gaffe in a debate. The election was *actually* decided by around 45,000 votes in key swing states; if he had fucked up enough, he certainly would have lost. Your viewpoint, consistent with your current messaging, is that it wouldn't be Biden's fault. Americans should know better than to elect a fascist, racist fuckface. It doesn't matter that Biden said some dumb shit in a debate, *they're* the real problem. And you'd be right, but assigning blame is only relevant toward *parties who can be held accountable*, who can change. I can blame gravity for killing me after stepping foot off a cliff, but gravity isn't going to change; I'm the one that has the ability to learn from and correct those mistakes. You can get mad at police for murdering black people, and you can get mad at the people who support the police and turn a blind eye toward it. But if you have the ability to realize you could be more effective, to help save lives via political action, you should take that chance. You are, again, perfectly justified in that anger. But your base conclusion that you shouldn't have to work on messaging is one not rooted in the reality of our modern political system. The slogan *does* matter. No politician could currently run on it and get elected. But they can definitely run on specifics within it. Edit: With regard to your second point, it might be true, and none of this matters. But if that's the case, there's no point in arguing about it at all, so.

Sorry, he's absolutely right (other discussions about Obama notwithstanding). All this grandstanding is stupid. But if you flat ask about "Defund the Police" you get like a 27% approval rate. Democrats, and yes, progressives, are fucking idiots with messaging most of the time. I'm not sure what Gen Z thinks about the whole thing, but I feel like anyone 20 or more years old will always want to go see movies at a theater. It's just...a thing we do. It's fun. Movies are events in our culture, and everyone staying at home and just watching them on the couch just isn't the way most people really want to consume it. Him refusing further debates would be objectively great for Biden. Thread If you want an excuse to call out sick of work, drink this Baskin Robbins Shake
I was bored so I did some research. The idea that a 32 oz. Baskin Robbins milkshake has 2,600 calories seems to come from a Men's Health article in 2009 (article no longer available, but see a reference here: ). It's possible this calorie count was accurate but there seems to be no way of knowing at this current time. As per United States law, chain restaurants of a certain size (Baskin Robbins qualifies) are required to report calorie counts, but there's a lot of uncertainty there. Without doing "bomb calorimetry" (a test that does not seem to be required), estimates are done via a basic "4-4-9" method where each gram of protein, carbohydrates, and fat are estimated at 4 or 9 calories each, with a few modifiers. But that's not particularly accurate, and deviations of up to 20% are allowed by current regulations. Regardless, a 32 oz. Baskin Robbins Chocolate Oreo milkshake today only seems to be . This is a bit more in line with what I'd expect. I don't know if the original image was ever true, but it does seem implausible.

I'm glad you're thinking of us, that's not a bad thing to think about, but the specifics in this case indicate 1) The workers are not directly profiting, 2) The Harry Potter game is likely going to sell fine enough, despite our actions here, and 3) Even if it didn't, it's unlikely Avalanche would go under as a result. There's *also* the logical extension that if people don't spend 70 on Harry Potter, they'll spend it on another game, keeping the net number of jobs in the industry equal. Even if Avalanche DID go under, those talented devs will eventually end up somewhere else, in equilibrium, because the industry will not have contracted.

I actually know a dev on this project. She is rightfully mortified at Rowling's comments and is deeply conflicted. However, one thing is fully clear: sales of a game almost never go to individual developers of the project. Sure, maybe if we had better unions, this would be a slightly more complex issue. But it's not. Sales of a game determine future decisions about the IP, and the profit pages on a corporation's books, but it's very unlikely that the success or failure of this game, in this case, will cause layoffs to a well-established development team, *especially* if the game is competently made but simply didn't do as well due to the extent circumstances of JK Rowling being a massive piece of shit. Supporting LGBT charities directly, with cash, is one of the best things you can do, but sending a message to WB over this game is certainly a good way to support your trans allies as well. Frankly, if one of my trans friends found out I was breezily enjoying this new title, I would feel like an absolute shithead. So I won't.

Weekend ERA, let's go. Every land animal on Earth is pitted in a one-on-one bracket-style tournament. I'm curious which animal, of all animals, would prevail. It's possible there is some rock-paper-scissors stuff occurring, but I doubt it. Here are the rules: 1) The approximate statistically average animal of that species is in the fight. If males and females have significant differences, the larger/deadlier of the two is chosen. 2) The arena is a flat plain of dirt. No trees, nowhere to hide. 3) Animals do not suffer cumulative damage between fights. 4) Assume each animal considers the other a threat, and attempts to kill. In the case of animals who are specifically prey, and would run away continuously, they would automatically be eliminated after refusing to engage after a set period of time. 5) No tools or outside equipment can be brought in. Sorry, humans. 6) This is purely a thought experiment to determine the deadliest land animal on Earth. Do not advocate real harm to animals, except mosquitos, fuck mosquitos! So, who wins? I'm thinking a hippopotamus, possibly. Rhinos or bears? How about the deadliest snake? Probably not enough venom to subdue the larger creatures out there?

Thread Next Gen: I want patches to be available sooner
Companies are strict and I can't really get into specific details. But the general process is that there's a large, LARGE list of specific testing scenarios that must be met in a satisfactory way. For instance, if the game detects a corrupt save file, the player should be alerted and the game not crash. If this does not occur, you fail, and did not pass cert. Repeat for hundreds of other specific tests. It's actually a very valuable service because typically console manufacturers do not charge for it. I don't honestly see much of a solution, though. It's a TON of work (it has to be done *numerous* times for every single title on the platform, regardless of how large it is) and the manufacturers already devote a lot of resources to it. It's definitely not perfect and sometimes things can slip through, because ultimately people are people and software is enormously complex and impossible to test perfectly, especially for a remote team who doesn't know the first thing about you, your game, or the specifics of how it was built and coded. Were I to suggest something (and this is just off the top of my head, really), I would say to try develop automated software built into the API so we could run checks on a lot of the simpler save/load/OS behavior automatically before we send it off. Typically any cert failures get the software sent back with a mandatory waiting period (so you can't just overload and spam the team with submissions), but sometimes you just make one tiny mistake, and it flubs the whole submission. Having an automated testing suite to catch some of the easier stuff could help save a lot of time.

But like...how does this work in practice? People die, people are born, for thousands of years. Could all people theoretically be brought back together to be unsundered again? Hasn't population increased? Where does the shard of a person go when someone dies? I feel like the answer to this is "don't think about it", but I'm curious if I'm misunderstanding something. 2) What's the deal with "calamities", anyway? It seems like the Ascians refer to it as "the rejoining of a shard back into the whole", but invariably it seems like calamities are just "a really bad thing happens", like Bahamut fucking up the planet. How are these related? Aren't entire shards deleted out of existence when this is supposed to happen, not just a bunch of war or whatever?

Oh, it was poor wording on my part...I meant the "previously unsundered" then became "sundered". i.e., the ancients of Amaurot split into 14 pieces. Presumably this new, sundered population lived mortal lives on the 14 worlds, and then died, but the wording of our Ascian friends (and directly seeing WoL absorb Ardbert, as both seem to be "the same person") implies these fragments can be brought back together. So my question was like...all those sundered people had kids and then died, presumably, but I guess the souls are just bouncing around the lifestream, being reborn into various people.

This is not the same thing. In a competitive game, players will do anything to achieve an advantage over another player. That means going with meta builds because the player will do better with that build than with another comparable one. In a single player game, you're not competing against anyone, you're just choosing which difficulty you think will be the most enjoyable for you. And while I was confusing you for someone else, the point still stands. Most bowling lanes offer bumpers. Most people *DON'T USE THEM*. Doing something "easy" as a matter of survival makes sense. Because when you're playing a game, generally people find the enjoyment in being mentally stimulated. If they're bored, they're not having fun. And easy difficulties, for most people, are boring. You claiming that people who actually enjoy challenges will naturally gravitate toward boring options is ridiculous. They're not doing something they consider work, they're not doing something they want to get out of the way as quickly as possible.

The idea that accessibility options should be included in entertainment, even by law, is nothing new. All films released in the United States are required to be sent out with closed captions so that the hearing impaired can enjoy them. It's not that big a deal to include these. Game difficulty options are a thornier subject than things like "subtitles", because in certain cases, they may cause an high amount of effort to implement...puzzle games are a good example, where you can't really introduce easier puzzles without...just making entirely new puzzles. But my response was purely with regard to the legality of non-difficulty options...I even say so in my response. There seems to be a disconnect here, where I say it's cool to criticize, and you say it's cool to criticize, and I say the developer can do anything I want, and you say the developer can do anything they want, but you seem to think that I (and the OP) are implying that difficulty options should be LITERALLY MANDATED. I don't actually think that, if for no other reason than viability and resource cost for the dev (see above puzzle game example). But saying games "should have" something just means you think it's a good feature and it should be implemented, because implementing it means the game will be better, full type. I think games "should have" 60 FPS. I think they "should have" inverted mouse control support. I think they "should have" a well thought out control scheme. I don't know why you think someone saying a game "should have" difficulty options is any different from the above statements. I think it is good, therefore I think games should have it. The argument with "developer intent" doesn't ever come into play with things like whether or not inverted mouse control support is included, so I don't know why it's coming up now. If you think difficulty options are BAD, that's another argument. But you don't seem to think that, so I don't know why there's such a disconnect for you.

If we're just playing a game of pure semantics here, I don't see how you can win it. The phrase "I think Uncharted 4 should have a better photo mode" in no way implies that I believe that Naughty Dog *has to implement this*. Or what? They can do whatever they want, I just THINK it SHOULD have a better mode. It's encouraging a thing that I believe is good, not a law. I think you're just fundamentally misreading it. It doesn't *matter* if they cannot grasp it fully. That's what you're absolutely refusing to see. Sure, it's quite possible someone who uses SparkNotes will never fully comprehend the full meaning and weight of Shakespeare, just like someone who puts on Assist Mode in Celeste may never achieve the sweet satisfaction of overcoming incredible difficulty to reach the summit. But it *doesn't matter*. They just want to enjoy the game, even if in your eyes it's "diminished". You're not them. They're not you. They have different values, skill levels, and preferences. And the original works are still there for anyone who wants them. I will criticize anything I goddamn want as a consumer. I will criticize games for being too short, too long, padded out, poorly performant, badly written, and yes, not accessible to me or others. And trust me, I'm a developer, I hear those criticisms every day. It's absolutely fine. The developer doesn't have to listen. But consumers are free to tell them how dumb it is.You're like...really not getting this? I'm sorry. THE DEVELOPER CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT TO. No one is denying that. The original OP is phrased in a way that said "should have this", but clearly he means he thinks they're great and believes more games should have them. He's not for instituting a industry-wide mandate that all games have assist modes. No one is. If we can't advocate for a thing or criticize developers for its exclusion, why are we even here?

Thread Easy/Assist mode is a blessing. Every game should have it.
It's almost as though singular works of art with no reasonable method of altering the way its viewers interact with it aren't the same as games. There are SparkNotes of Shakespeare's works and they sell millions. There are plenty of guides and essays to help explain the themes of Salvador Dali. And Flight of the Bumblebee was composed to be heard, not as a fun challenge for pianists (this would be like saying a video game is not accessible because other programmers couldn't make it). Adding an easier mode can cost resources (though far less than people think), and certainly a developer is within their rights not to include it. But we're also more than justified in thinking that games are better with it and should be included. It's funny how no one gets mad when people complain that a game was rushed, unfinished, broken, or boring, but suddenly it's against "developer intent" if they didn't include accessibility options. It's a more-than-justified complaint. And everyone is free to make it.

Ahah, the judo attempt! Hyah! I mean, I actually love the Desert Bus for charity. It's a great, good-natured thing. But like...I don't know what your argument here is. Desert Bus is a straight garbage game. It is bad. Everyone is free to criticize it, despite the developer's intent. Are you saying they shouldn't be? If you're trying to say that "you shouldn't criticize a game because look a game might end up being so awfully bad that people start ironically playing it and then get some donations because of it", like...uh...I think that's a bit of a non sequitur. Good for charity, I guess? The game still sucks. We can still criticize a game as being bad, even if some people decided to make the best of it. It doesn't matter if the developers listen to us. They don't have to. None of us are saying they have to? We're just *saying* it's good to do good things, and it's bad to do bad things. Apparently that's controversial, I guess.

This is so bizarre to me. Sure, no one can "tell a developer what to do". They have the basic freedom of autonomy. But criticism is a thing? It's always a thing? I'm imagining a discussion about ANYTHING ELSE, and this is how it should go, according to you: Me: "The addition of Break mechanics here completely ruins the game. It's unbalanced, boring, and it doesn't respect the player's time." You: "That's the developer's intent and they have the right to make whatever game they want to. You can decide not to support them but ultimately it's their decision." Like...what? What in the world? Of course they can make whatever decision they want. Just like it's our decision to discuss why it doesn't work and criticize it. This line of thinking is so vapid to me.

Thread Twitter thread from lighting artist at Naughty Dog on why devs push for 30FPS and what sacrifices are made to reach 60
This is a little complicated. In general, you can tweak effects' quality and look very easily...change some numbers having to do with screen space ambient occlusion, or even something like "turn bloom on" with a checkbox. Texturing and modeling artists have to do a complex process of bringing a high resolution sculpt down to reasonable levels via a process called "retopology", and then manually bake out a bunch of textures for those models. While automatic "LOD" (level of detail) processes exist to lower/raise model fidelity, on any AAA game, they're usually not good enough for main characters or closer shots; the work has to be done manually. So on a game that has to support a 60 FPS mode, taking this stance of having two different sets would mean an absolute TON of extra work for the modelers; many months' worth, I would wager. So generally they're just gonna make sure the models are decently performant and just focus on those during development, and leave the mode switches to more easily adjustable settings.

If the developer doesn't have the time or resources to implement a mode, that's totally understandable. But his response was specifically implying it shouldn't be done because, like in movies, people shouldn't have options. Your argument is a bit of a misdirect, though. Very rarely do 30 FPS vs 60 FPS cut things like "atmosphere", or the general look of the game (except on very low settings). Usually downing resolution or shadow map fidelity or AA quality is what does it, not actually changing anything to do with art style.

There is no particular reason why he couldn't do this. 4) Four Republican controlled swing states refuse to ratify election results. 5) The Supreme Court doesn't really get involved, and just says the EC must occur on December 14th. 6) The election gets kicked down to Congress, where there are 26 Republican delegations, 23 Democratic, and 1 tie. Republicans carry it. None of this is "obscene". The biggest thing (steps 4, and 6) is seeing if all Republicans will truly and absolutely slide their own country into undeniable fascism, but frankly, I've seen nothing in these four years to indicate that they'll suddenly grow a conscience. That said, there are a ton of factors required for this to play out well before the election: the production of an actually effective vaccine, the completion of it by September, a timely manufacturing process, a timely delivery to the United States, and effective distribution. I went to Broadway in late February, seeing Dear Evan Hansen and Jagged Little Pill. Frankly, I left both feeling significant disgust at the absolute ease with which these narratives hand-waved away any and all consequences for two abusive, horrific white teenage characters who gaslit, mentally abused, and in one case, simply watched and allowed a friend of his to rape a woman. They both basically decide to take a "year off before going to college" as collective punishment. Broadway isn't nearly as progressive as it thinks it is, and while Hamilton certainly portrays the founding fathers with perhaps more respect than they deserve, it's pretty clearly exaggerated and treats them far more like human beings than any history lesson taught to children in schools. I'll take it.

Maybe it works either way nowadays, I'm not sure, but it would be very simple for a team to be like "hey we need to make sure everything is scaled properly in our modeling software", which they should frankly be doing anyway. Unreal, like any engine, has bugs that pop up from time to time. You fix them or find workarounds or wait for the new version. Nothing should be a "surprise" that late in the game to any even remotely competent team. That said, Square Enix made decisions to do what they did with the current technology available. I don't doubt they could have managed texture memory and pop-in better in certain areas, but I also understand they were under significant release pressure.

Thread A Technical Question FF 7 Remake " 2D Backgrounds"
It's not about what they *know how to do*. I don't recall XIII using static skybox backgrounds, but if they did, it was not in the context of the rest of Final Fantasy VIIR's character models, effects, lighting, and animation. Those things cost a lot, and rendering the hyper-detailed plates above would have been very costly. It's *still* costly, even as a high-definition skybox, to some extent; clearly we have texture memory and loading issues all over the place.

The plates above weren't that bad. The slums from Chapter 6 and the ruins from Chapter 15 were far worse. Anyway, yes, converting an insane amount of geometry and lighting to a simple skybox saves an incredible amount of resources and was likely necessary to get it running at the framerate it did.

Also, that Twitter guy above is an idiot. "Unreal fucked us by deciding to not load them in"? UE4 is an engine with a very advanced and proven texture management system. How that tool is used by the developer and how it has to work within the confines of limited, seven year old hardware is the important thing, here. Epic is not at fault. UE4 works fine.

It's impossible to know exactly how the tools will work, but I imagine that because the geometry is being virtualized, hitting a target framerate means telling Nanite to generate fewer triangles on screen from the original geometry. There's still likely significant overhead that doesn't change from Nanite, but fewer triangles will be rendered which means less work for the GPU. Same with lighting to some extent, there are numerous quality settings involved. However, your son is correct in that 30 FPS isn't going away any time soon. If you can make something look better while still maintaining a "cinematic" frame rate, devs and consumers alike are going to be in for it.

Most/all games can be boiled down to a gameplay loop...Portal is a nice example. I could easily say "Portal is a boring game. All it is is one test chamber after another, over and over again, until you beat it." Except that Portal uses that regular structure to introduce new ideas. It delights with new mechanics, new ways those mechanics are combined, the story building up within those test chambers, building toward an inevitable conclusion. Octopath Traveler takes its regular structure and introduces almost nothing new to the player, ever. (Advanced jobs are new, but even they exist sort of "between" those regular 40 loops.) Characters are flat, one-dimensional cutouts. No new gameplay is introduced save the standard numerical "getting stronger". There are no puzzles or interesting choices to be made while exploring dungeons. The same use of path actions never changes.

There is no interesting design. I fight a boss that I generally overpower quite easily due to Cyrus being OP as hell. I can't fathom why anyone likes this. (Possible shoutout to that one Olberic chapter for being *slightly* different.) There are no narrative connecting lines, no real inter-party communication minus forced scenes with zero production value or cohesion, no anything. It's a lifeless, soulless void of a game. A seven foot three dude, and a KKK member, are sure to hit that bar. But what about 6'5? 6'1? 5'11? It's a spectrum. It's a more useful question to ask "do all white people have racist thoughts and behaviors at certain times"? And I think the answer to that question is yes. I myself always try to do better, but I'd be lying if I didn't have some level of internalized stigma going on. Which is why it's important to listen to people when they tell you your behavior is problematic, and do better. I always imagine a lot of these people yelling at others that they're playing it wrong as game designers in feedback sessions for their game. "What did you think of the battle system?" "Errr, I didn't find block or dodge very reactive, and I kept having the wrong materia set up and I can't change it mid-fight" "Well you're playing it wrong." If there's a right way to play, but a very significant number of players aren't doing it, who's at fault? That said, it has its moments. Playing with materia setups and seeing a big change in battle efficiency is definitely well done. And visually it's a marvel.

Thread To the doubters, how do you like the new FF7 Remake Combat?
I don't think that's fair. No one actively wants the same battle experience over and over again; all players crave novelty and excitement, and repetition breeds boredom. But clearly players are, for one reason or another, unprepared for that fight. They could introduce a simpler type (or more obviously telegraphed) type of elemental shift earlier the game, for instance, or warn players with a dialogue line saying they've seen Corneo's secret fighter and they should really have a "variety of spells" for the upcoming match. There are numerous ways to handle this, not saying which is the best. But this is the sort of thing you root out and try to figure out in rigorous playtesting sessions.

Well, I listed that I "like" the battle system even though I have my problems with it. And I do like it! But I think at the very least the game could have more clear messaging and telegraphs and feedback if there's a "working" playstyle. When your players aren't getting something, the best way to react isn't to claim they're just not getting it, it's to improve your techniques and introductions to boost the amount playing in your preferred design style. Not that I'm claiming Square did that, I mean, I don't know. Could be a cultural thing, too. But people have been getting real aggro.

The overworld is not meant to be challenging. Only dungeons and raids are, and specifically, the bosses. It's not ideal, but it's also a design decision: the devs didn't want the players to feel in any real danger unless they specifically chose to be in it. Of course, they should be forcing very little "trivial" combat on the player, in my opinion, but they do. Quest design is simply...not good. As far as the narrative, Heavensward improves steadily as it goes along. Stormblood is worse than people say it is, but Shadowbringers is every bit as good as people say it is, which is incredible. But TBH, it just doesn't sound like your thing? And that's totally okay.

And especially now, when so many forms of entertainment aren't available, I expect from an industry perspective, games are doing quite well. However, indies themselves may have extreme trouble procuring a partner, because like all investments, that game development is a risk...something publishers rarely do in times of uncertainty. I'm a dev and anecdotally, I haven't seen this much. There's a reason game devs playtest with normal people and not with only other game devs: even "untrained" people have valuable insight and very closely represent how our final target audience is likely to react. Something that I'll think is obvious won't be picked up by eight out of ten players? That's not their fault; it's mine. What I *will* call people out on is inaccuracies regarding the business of the industry or the processes by which games get made. Some people have no idea, whew.

Because even in major cities, "3D artists" do not make that kind of cash. Period. Art directors might, if it's a well established company. Rockstar certainly qualifies. Also, even though these direct comparisons are generally asinine, generally, yes, though it depends on the size of the team and the importance of the narrative. Artists work longer on the project and cannot seek other work during the process. And we've already established that there were long gaps in the recording schedule and it's likely he wasn't working continuously for fifteen months, so even the "75k/year" figure is not accurate.

I didn't misread shit. You miscommunicated. And "3D character artist" is a type of "3D artist". Is it environment? Or rigger, or animator? Or did you mean "art director", which is, in fact, a better paid position due to its importance? These people are not generally referred to as "3D artist".First of all, cool job belittling any game developer working "not in a big city", second of all, I work in Los Angeles and am very familiar with wages paid here.Voice actors are recast literally all the time. Members of the art team are not "more replaceable". Ugh. Both are integral to the project. My dog, that's a *creative director*, usually the head of the entire project. Them goal posts keep movin'. Tons of voice actors, my friends among them, struggle, and the voice actor strike a couple years back was not undeserved. But in this case, he did just fine, and the actors are at least fortunate enough to have a union representing their interests. You did not, and you edited your post to remove you saying otherwise. Even then, 150k is a relatively extreme high end, even for "managers".

As someone who is both the head of a game dev studio and (at one point, at least) a regularly working voice actor...this. It's not that voice actors don't deserve proper benefits, but SAG-AFTRA does a fairly good job negotiating rates. I don't care if the game went for millions of copies, one hundred thousand dollars for a voiceover role is very good pay. They do their job well. Meanwhile, almost zero employees in the games industry have any union representation and they are very frequently overworked, underpaid, and disregarded. Also, a voice actor is generally only involved for a small fraction of the number of hours any normal member of the team is. Also, someone earlier in this thread was indicating that a character artist is making 150k/yr with little experience? L-O-fucking L.

Federal income tax is generally the "bulk" of your tax, implemented in marginal (read: tiered) amounts as you earn more and more money. Everyone in the country is affected by this, and the money goes to the federal government, which is generally responsible for "country-wide" programs, policies, and the armed forces. Each state has its own income tax (and some have no income tax at all, like Florida and Alaska!), and that applies only to residents of that state. It's generally less than federal income taxes and pays for state-specific stuff. Some states are high, some states are low. You may also have local taxes as well, specific to your city or town. All of these add up to form your total tax bill for the year.

Sorry, I should be clearer. When I say that's Epic's goal, it's it's not like they're doing it because they're the champion of morality. They hope the lower percentage will draw devs and consumers to their platform long-term. If it works and Valve doesn't adjust, they do well. If Valve does adjust, they could claim they made the industry a better place. They aren't a "moral" company. It doesn't make sense for them not to pursue every avenue they can for Fortnite revenue; it's not like their employees would go on strike for daring to release on a platform that took 30%. They would have no way of reaching mobile consumers if they refused that, and it would have no bearing on their percentage goals.

Then why ever fight for a lower rate? Who cares, right? Anecdotally, most developers receive some percentage of backend sales from a published game, even if it's low. So yes, in most cases, while the publisher might profit more, the devs will too. And of course a publisher who made more money is going to be in a better position to fund games, even if you skeptically believe that all of them are going to gobble up the shifted profit. Also, the vast majority of games on Steam are self-published, so in almost all smaller cases, it goes directly to the devs. Better all around.

I'm not necessarily defending everything Epic does, but looking at a single year's overall PC spend doesn't mean much. If Epic's game is to eventually lower the percentage that Valve and others take from developers, then those gains likely wouldn't be "visible" for years to come, as it means fewer developers going out of business and better pay for their employees.

At one point, a dramatic shootout where a twelve-year-old child's LIFE is in danger is resolved by shooting a bra off a line, causing the mercenaries to abandon their objective to go look at women's underwear. This shit made me physically *angry*. This trash runs through this entire game, even the very end, where Come the fuck on. - The Somniums were an absolute disaster. Trial and error illogical nonsense. Occasionally, due to how completely unknown future time requirements would be, you'd get into a situation where you'd *have* to restart the entire thing from the beginning due to the "three diamonds" mechanic. Every time I entered one I literally considered stopping. - Pacing was rough, especially in the Iris route. More wasn't better, here. - Many things unexplained, including - There were some positives, however. The central mystery was well done, and Mizuki and Moma (minus occasional pervy breakdowns) were excellent characters. The voice acting was fantastic overall.

Thread CNN: Bernie Sanders told Elizabeth Warren in private 2018 meeting that a woman can't win, Bernie denies(Update: NYT & Buzzfeed Confirming)
If she *deliberately* leaked it, I'm not sure that's a good look for her either, but...I guess. Warren and Bernie are fighting for the same crowd. I do wish one of them would get out of the other's way, but there's no reason for either of them to be the one to do it.

At this point I have to wonder why Warren hasn't issued anything. It's starting to look bad on her, too.

Thread Lenna's Inception - procedurally generated top-down Zelda-like action-adventure game (PC, Release date: 17 January 2020)
Fitting in procedural generation into a genre that highly benefits from extremely tight, clever design seems like an odd choice, but it does look kind of cool. Hoping for some reviews?
