Thread Final Fantasy VII Remake - Review Thread (Embargo lifts on April 6th, 2020)
At risk of being warned/banned, you're an idiot who has no idea what they're talking about. Developers are underpaid and overworked. Game devs who work in this industry do so not for the pay, or the benefits...they'd almost certainly earn more in almost any other field...they do so because they're wildly passionate about games. They crunch long, hard hours and pour every ounce they can into these titles. You think some developer sat there and said, yeah, I have the time, energy, and budget to make beautifully rendered medicine bottles, but you know what, I just want to go to Outback Steakhouse and sit on my ass? Fuck you. These things cost time and money. These things are universally limited by producers and the reality of game development budgets. When you only have a few hours to get something in, you get something in. You see that foreground? It doesn't look great. Maybe Square could have done better with planning or budgeting, though a delay would cost untold hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars, so tough decisions have to be made. But *lazy*?! As in, a developer of Final Fantasy VII could have made a highly detailed, wildly exquisite backdrop but chose to put in what you posted? Fucking please. Again, you're making yourself look like a rube with every continued post you make. I'd call it quits while you're behind, my guy.

I would go so far as to say there is no real combat in the overworld. There are monsters to give some semblance of life to the area, not to act as real threats. No open-world mob takes more than twenty seconds to kill. The game effectively boils down to boss encounters, and those encounters are glorious. Anyway, point is, SE needs to get on that modern quest design train.

Thread My Hero Academia: Season 4 |OT| Sound! UA-phonium
It's quarantine time, so I thought I'd catch up. Jesus Christ, what the hell happened to this show? Season 4 was only mildly interesting in the first half, with a relatively boring mix of villains and an already-used save the little kid motivation. The second half just goes straight into pure filler territory. The animation seems to have been downgraded, as well, on average. With All Might and One for All out of the picture, you'd think they'd do something to ratchet up another threat. Instead, the show seems to believe its lackluster League of Villains and side characters is enough to sustain interest. No one is really using powers in interesting or creative ways...ugh. I think I'm done with it, sadly. I'll always remember you, United States of Smash.

This is correct. People, we've all been looking forward to this game, but Square told you April 10th, and you're getting April 10th. Australia got a little bonus; let them enjoy it. Allowing early digital is a horrible move for businesses and screwing over people getting physical (internet issues, collector's editions, there are a variety of legitimate reasons) in most areas of the world. Logically it shouldn't be, you're correct. However, the increased margins on the digital copies of games are probably the only thing preventing an industry wide raise to $70 for AAA titles, which frankly, should happen anyway. We're *way* behind the inflation curve on that one. However, I'm also aware that that raise (whenever it occurs) will probably not affect digital vs. physical price matching, so...yeah.

Thread "You aren't a game Dev so you don't get to have an opinion on what is or isn't bad game design"
I'm a dev and anecdotally, I haven't seen this much. There's a reason game devs playtest with normal people and not with only other game devs: even "untrained" people have valuable insight and very closely represent how our final target audience is likely to react. Something that I'll think is obvious won't be picked up by eight out of ten players? That's not their fault; it's mine. What I *will* call people out on is inaccuracies regarding the business of the industry or the processes by which games get made. Some people have no idea, whew.

Because even in major cities, "3D artists" do not make that kind of cash. Period. Art directors might, if it's a well established company. Rockstar certainly qualifies. Also, even though these direct comparisons are generally asinine, generally, yes, though it depends on the size of the team and the importance of the narrative. Artists work longer on the project and cannot seek other work during the process. And we've already established that there were long gaps in the recording schedule and it's likely he wasn't working continuously for fifteen months, so even the "75k/year" figure is not accurate.

I didn't misread shit. You miscommunicated. And "3D character artist" is a type of "3D artist". Is it environment? Or rigger, or animator? Or did you mean "art director", which is, in fact, a better paid position due to its importance? These people are not generally referred to as "3D artist".First of all, cool job belittling any game developer working "not in a big city", second of all, I work in Los Angeles and am very familiar with wages paid here.Voice actors are recast literally all the time. Members of the art team are not "more replaceable". Ugh. Both are integral to the project. My dog, that's a *creative director*, usually the head of the entire project. Them goal posts keep movin'. And holy shit the comparison of creative director to a voice actor is not even fucking CLOSE. You apparently know nothing about game development.

The voice actor was paid 100k for what appears to be *not* a full-time job. In addition, the union takes care of health care and other benefits for its members. Tons of voice actors, my friends among them, struggle, and the voice actor strike a couple years back was not undeserved. But in this case, he did just fine, and the actors are at least fortunate enough to have a union representing their interests. You did not, and you edited your post to remove you saying otherwise. Even then, 150k is a relatively extreme high end, even for "managers".

As someone who is both the head of a game dev studio and (at one point, at least) a regularly working voice actor...this. It's not that voice actors don't deserve proper benefits, but SAG-AFTRA does a fairly good job negotiating rates. I don't care if the game went for millions of copies, one hundred thousand dollars for a voiceover role is very good pay. They do their job well. Meanwhile, almost zero employees in the games industry have any union representation and they are very frequently overworked, underpaid, and disregarded. Also, a voice actor is generally only involved for a small fraction of the number of hours any normal member of the team is. Also, someone earlier in this thread was indicating that a character artist is making 150k/yr with little experience? L-O-fucking L.

Thread CA delays State Income Tax deadline to June 15
Federal income tax is generally the "bulk" of your tax, implemented in marginal (read: tiered) amounts as you earn more and more money. Everyone in the country is affected by this, and the money goes to the federal government, which is generally responsible for "country-wide" programs, policies, and the armed forces. Each state has its own income tax (and some have no income tax at all, like Florida and Alaska!), and that applies only to residents of that state. It's generally less than federal income taxes and pays for state-specific stuff. Some states are high, some states are low. You may also have local taxes as well, specific to your city or town. All of these add up to form your total tax bill for the year.

I'm not trying to be facetious, but I would recommend checking out some "win probability" graphs that ESPN uses as a sports game (let's say, American football) uses. Some games are relatively steady, the graph generally slowly climbing from 60% to 100% win probability as the game reaches its conclusion. Others suffer wild swings up and down as relatively huge, game-changing plays are made.

I'm not sure I should be quoting this stuff on this board, because it's extremely intense, but I choose to believe the victim, and holy shit, I have no problem saying fuck Kobe Bryant. His death, and moreso the eight others on board, is still a tragedy, especially because from all accounts, Kobe had become a better person. But it in no way excuses or erases those unbelievably heinous acts from his resume, and no one should expect people to forget it because suddenly he's dead and magically, dead people deserve respect unconditionally. No, they don't.

The goal would be to drag Steam's percentage down with it. Besides, if Epic doesn't open up eventually, it'll just die. Uh...because they want money? Epic doesn't have a mobile distribution platform. I'm not sure why that's related. They have a publishing arm and a Fortnite arm.

Sorry, I should be clearer. When I say that's Epic's goal, it's it's not like they're doing it because they're the champion of morality. They hope the lower percentage will draw devs and consumers to their platform long-term. If it works and Valve doesn't adjust, they do well. If Valve does adjust, they could claim they made the industry a better place. They aren't a "moral" company. It doesn't make sense for them not to pursue every avenue they can for Fortnite revenue; it's not like their employees would go on strike for daring to release on a platform that took 30%. They would have no way of reaching mobile consumers if they refused that, and it would have no bearing on their percentage goals.

Then why ever fight for a lower rate? Who cares, right? Anecdotally, most developers receive some percentage of backend sales from a published game, even if it's low. So yes, in most cases, while the publisher might profit more, the devs will too. And of course a publisher who made more money is going to be in a better position to fund games, even if you skeptically believe that all of them are going to gobble up the shifted profit. Also, the vast majority of games on Steam are self-published, so in almost all smaller cases, it goes directly to the devs. Better all around.

Correct! Jimmy Hinson, a.k.a. BigGiantCircles, composed the track for the game. At some point or another, a producer on the show played the game and loved the track, and he reached out to see if they could use it for Episodes 2 and 7 of Season 2. Jimmy maintained the rights to the music as part of the agreement, so he was the recipient of those Netflix BUX. But the increased awareness definitely drove some sales right when Season 2 was released! I always did love this song. If you like it, you can listen to the full soundtrack and support Jimmy . I'm not necessarily defending everything Epic does, but looking at a single year's overall PC spend doesn't mean much. If Epic's game is to eventually lower the percentage that Valve and others take from developers, then those gains likely wouldn't be "visible" for years to come, as it means fewer developers going out of business and better pay for their employees.

I am a VERY BIG PROPONENT of small numbers in RPG's. Unfettered capitalism and low/no regulations results in human beings doing whatever they can to make money. Update: I modified the font to fix the forward slash bug! This occurs because in Unity, if a character exceeds the programmed width for a UI element in a Canvas, and the "Overflow" option is not checked, it doesn't render the character. So, I just loaded up the Zidane font in a font editor and reduced the kerning a bit on the forward slash, and now it renders! (Luckily I am a Unity dev.) You can get the modified font here: Keep in mind the name of this font is "ZidaneThinSlash" and the Memoria.ini needs to be updated accordingly. There are a few hardcoded font elements on the page (like "Lv", "HP", and "MP") that would require more extensive hacking to fix, but they're pretty minor. Indeed, the original font does use aliasing and it's the cause of the lowercase w looking a bit wonky, which is a letter that relies more on the aliased pixels than others to read super well. However, I am not well acquainted with font editors and it would likely take me far too much time. If there are any font-lovers out there, this may be a good project to take on for a few hours! However, I am more than happy with the current sharper version and I'm pretty psyched to play with all these beautiful up-rezzed BG's and the OG font.

I am attempting to explain a basic principle to you that, frankly, schoolchildren master with little trouble. I could be much more condescending, but for your benefit and perhaps other curious folks, I will explain a bit more. Let's say there are one thousand people who are absolutely sure how they are going to vote. Because I'm omniscient, I know six hundred of them are going to vote for A, four hundred are going to vote for B. But you don't know that, and you're not sure! You want to know. So you start asking people, but people are busy and you don't have a lot of time. You only get to ask twenty, randomly, from the population. Now, hopefully, of the twenty, twelve say they are voting for candidate A, and eight say for B. This would be exactly correct (and is technically the most likely outcome), but it is probably not going to happen. In this circumstance, if you were to randomly get 13 for A and then 7 for B...you can see how simple that would be...now we would project our population to be 65 percent for A, and 35 percent for B. And you might even get a crazier result, like 16 versus 4, just by bad luck! Polls try to sample as many people as they can, and try to get an accurate cross section of the population (if you were to ask only people with landlines, for instance, you would get only older and thus more conservative folk). So because of this uncertainty and, yes, random chance inherent in representative sampling, there is a fairly significant margin of error within every poll. Now, I feel a little more comfortable in telling you to close your mouth until you understand what I just said.

Thread Donald J. Trump has been impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives.
You clearly do not understand polling. At that moment in time, the results of the people that particular poll asked to respond gave those exact results. But because of random chance or an unintended selection bias, there is uncertainty, also known as the margin of error. You can collect many poll results to collectively reduce the margin of error, but it is always there. Hillary's lead shrank in those final two weeks, of that there is no doubt. The poll you linked in no way implied those results would be true at the time of the election. 538, which uses a model that combines many polls, gave Hillary about a 76 percent chance of winning on election day. You'll note that the number was not one hundred percent. Again, please educate yourself on this matter.

You also would not be able to carve in more handholds without ruining the original experience for climbers, because there is only one physical Yosemite. It's still an "accessibility" issue, even if the traits in question (whether they be poor reaction time, poor spatial reasoning, inability to multitask, whatever) aren't traditional disabilities. The whole point of accessibility is to make the game playable *and fun* to as many people as possible. You claimed TGM3's intrigue and fanbase would disappear overnight if the game had easier modes. I fundamentally disagree with that, as IIDX shows. I agree that TGM3 would probably benefit from increased accessibility, as would Sekiro. But I am not *demanding* it. I am merely saying its inclusion would not harm the game.Speaking as , I disagree. It is not very little effort. In fact, making four good step chart difficulties for each song in the game was a mind-numbing amount of work. It has to be done by hand, and you can't follow the music note-for-note, as that would be too difficult. Which notes do you leave in while still preserving a good difficulty while still making the player feel like they're going along with the music? Do you stick to melody, or do you work in other layers? When do you switch? And all the testing...whew.

I think you have this idea that offering an easy mode wouldn't be letting people play the "main game". I disagree. If you only purpose in playing is experiencing mind-numbing difficulty, sure, those people don't get to "experience it", but many people want to play Sekiro for the story, the world, the characters, the graphics, the audio, whatever. And they can absolutely experience what they want to, the things they were interested in, without mind-numbing difficulty. Tetris is sort of a bad example in some sense, because there's not much beyond the mechanics of the game itself. But even then, plenty of people are happy playing normal levels of Tetris. They don't need to go wild to get some value. Their "main game" is just easier. I also don't think that even if we're talking about traditional "accessibility" that developers have a moral obligation to make their stuff work for everyone. Traditional music games *cannot* be played by deaf people as intended; it's impossible. Almost no traditional games can be played by the blind. But it's always nice for people to try their best to include as many people as possible, and I will always applaud their efforts. ahhhhh must sleep though

Thread Sekiro success, sales, and winning Game of the Year is a huge strike against the "difficulty equals bad" notion
You make one base difficulty with some assist mode options like slowing down the game, widening the parry window, or lowering boss HP. Again, Matt Thorson did this in a cave, with a box of scraps. I'm a developer and I know exactly how much work this would take, and it's trivial for a developer of From's size. If they'd like to add a little mark next to a player's save file that they used these options, I'm all for it. Again, not saying they *have* to do this, but that it would not affect your experience, at all. People who enjoy challenge don't just say fuck it and put the bumpers up in the bowling lane. They don't lower the basketball rim. They don't go to assist mode in Celeste, and they wouldn't go to assist mode in Sekiro.Reaction time is an easy-to-understand specific physical skill that might gate Sekiro progress, but the point is that not all people are capable of beating Sekiro in a "reasonable" amount of time due to fundamental differences in skill. Is Sekiro still fun if it takes 1,000 hours to do what you did in 30? Unless you're seriously arguing that everyone who's worse at video games is just lazy or something. And this isn't even touching people with actually recognized disabilities.TGM3 literally has an easy mode, what are you talking about? Games are *welcome* to have incredibly high difficulty levels, as long as they have ways to enjoy them otherwise. You can get a ton of mileage out of TGM3 if you're not a god, plus, you know, it's Tetris. There are *highly* similar experiences elsewhere for Tetris players. There is no other way to enjoy the story, graphics, lore, sound, and combat of Sekiro if you suck at it. Or are you saying that highly skilled players gain incredible satisfaction by beating TGM3 on the hardest difficulty, **? How curious.

Thread Sekiro success, sales, and winning Game of the Year is a huge strike against the "difficulty equals bad" notion
You are conflating multiplayer with Sekiro. Offering aim assist to players *would* affect your experience, even if you could turn it off; you would no longer do as well in matches relative to other players, because you're fighting against them. The solution there *would* be to offer separate matchmaking (Overwatch does not allow PC players to play with console players), though I know that's a bit of extra work, of course. In a single player game, offering an easier difficulty doesn't affect you. They live in a bubble completely removed from your own experience. The only thing you see different is "would you like to play with bumpers?", and you say no. The end.I mean, you...you did, though. Quote: "TGM's intrigue (not to mention fanbase) would disappear overnight if the games were easier to beat." This is literally what you said. If you offered an easier mode to beat the game ("on easy", of course), you claimed the game wouldn't be what it is today. If TGM3 offered an easier mode, the original would still be the exact same game, because the original game would still exist as it was originally designed. I can't fathom how people can't see this. *It's still there.* Nothing is changed. Go after that impossibly difficult triumph. Train till your fingers bleed. You think beating it on a "very easy", the mode *for the masses*, would just satisfy these people? Hell no. They live for the challenge. They're going after it. Just like IIDX. I'm not making the "true" game easier, I'm making the whole package *more accessible for others to enjoy*. And again, there exist other Tetris games. TGM3 could have done much better, but in this particular case, I can see why no one complained. Many games have attempted to automate this sort of process to let the players import their own music. *None* of them have resulted in good step patterns. While sufficiently advanced AI can do theoretically anything, I assure you there exists no automated process that could make good easier stepcharts without very significant intervention from people, and it would be exceptionally difficult to even begin to create one. Not sure why this point is even relevant. The point is that IIDX, whether it was easy or hard to implement, *offered* easier difficulties and the game still has a legendary mythos of extreme difficulty. Edit: Anyway I'm going to bed now. Nice discussing things with you!

I AM AN ACTUAL DEVELOPER. It is NOT HARD TO DO THIS.All of these quotes could have been used to argue against Assist Mode in Celeste, which lets players tune things like the game speed or jump total (or, perhaps, parry window) to their preference. But it had those and it was fine. You can *just not use them*. If the "easy mode" isn't as "good" as the regular mode (according to you), WHO CARES, the people playing easy mode weren't able to play normal mode at all, so by default it's better for them. (Also, I still don't understand how lengthening the parry window "breaks" the game. It simply makes a mechanic more forgiving. No one has been able to explain this to me in detail.)But certainly TGM3's easy mode is nothing for those crazy grandmasters, and the existence of an easier mode does not take away from the game's mystique or mythos. So if they offered an even easier option, it would still have all these mystique about it. The existence of any easier mode doesn't affect those at the top. It lets you play the game's first 50 levels, and "sakura is whatever" is not a good counterargument. TGM3 still offers players of lesser skill some opportunities to enjoy the game, even if you think they aren't the "real experience". Could it use more? I would say yes. But it has *some*. Also, even if it didn't, players can get a *very* comparable experience (and easier!) in other Tetris games, where they could not in Sekiro.

It's a ill-defined obligation. To what extent do developers go out of their away, at risk of financial collapse, to include x% more people? Because that can't be defined, I don't think it can be termed an "obligation". A developer is not evil because financial realities caused them to not include a colorblind mode. If you can't define specifics, and you can't, you can't expect developers to hold up a completely ill-defined set of "obligations". They simply do the best they can under the circumstances, and I won't fault anyone for it. I just think developers should be pro-active in exploring these options and hopefully get as many of them in as they can. I think it's better to think of TGM3 itself as a "hard mode" DLC to the existing game of Tetris, which might resolve our issues here. You're right in that you can't make a hard mode easier without making it...not a hard mode, its literal identity. But TGM3 is not the only way to play the base experience of Tetris, and the easier modes exist for everyone else to enjoy the actual gameplay of what makes Tetris, Tetris.

If it is true that parry timing window would not really make the game much easier to play, a blanket slowdown on game speed certainly would (another mechanic in Assist Mode). Or health decrease, or more iFrames, or whatever. It may not be the "tuned" or "ideal" way to play, but of course it isn't. From would of course develop the primary mode to be the de facto true experience. But *whatever* it is, the easy mode would allow others to have fun with it, even if it isn't as "well tuned". I know you haven't played Celeste, but each screen is a precise platforming "puzzle" that you have to figure out how to clear using a single air dash. Granting the player more or even infinite airdashes straight up breaks the intended design of the screen, but it doesn't matter, people had fun with it. And it doesn't affect me at all.It is, of course, still Tetris. There are other Tetris games. But I maintain that the existence of easier (and it *is* easier) modes didn't harm the game. It could use more, sure. But I am *quite* confident that if the game offered a "Very Easy Mode", it would still be quite famous. If you disagree, we'll just have to come to terms with it. IIDX is an example of an *unbelievably* difficult rhythm game, famous in Japan for its absolutely insane nonsense. It has a wide variety of easy difficulties and it hasn't affected its popularity one bit.

The only way adding in an easier difficulty (or assist mode options) would affect the community is if the community is formed around how much better they are then other people, and if that's the case (it seems to be, for many), fuck 'em. If it's because they genuinely enjoy a really challenging experience (which will remain untouched) or because they love the gameplay, lore, graphics, audio, or production, they're all good. NBA players don't lose their sense of community because some kids lower the rim to 8 feet. They're strengthened by it, and encourage people of all skill levels to play basketball and enjoy the game they love so much. I do not accept that "people are just going to take the easy way out". That didn't happen for Celeste, it doesn't happen for bowling, it doesn't happen for anything where people enjoy a challenge. And I'm tired of people telling me they don't want other people to have options and enjoy the game because they think THEIR weak asses are gonna pick the easier option.

There are no well-reasoned arguments for why adding a difficulty setting would compromise core experiences of the game, because the core experience of the game would be untouched. If the player "can't resist", that's their problem, not the developer's. This is, again, like arguing against the existence of bumpers in bowling lanes because you don't think you'd be able to resist using them. Celeste has already shown that adding in those functions doesn't in any capacity ruin the game's natural challenge for players who enjoy it.

I disagree. They're intrinsically linked; there is no hard line of "well this person has a ADA-recognized mental disability" or "age 16 is when you are old enough to handle a game of this difficulty". When I say games should be accessible, I mean they should be accessible to anyone who wants to play them and have fun. For instance, some people have slow reaction time. Like, physically, using a test that just flashes the color red and asks the person to hit a button as fast as they can. This is *not a disability* in any normally recognized sense of the word, but for the purposes of Sekiro, it might as well be the same as someone with poor motor function in their hand, or whatever. Others don't have the specific types of intelligence that lets them focus on a wide number of things at once, or spatial reasoning, or whatever. Brains are complex and it's not anyone's fault if they're just baseline worse than others. The point of accessibility to let people who ordinarily couldn't experience the game the way it was originally designed (for a very specific band of skill level; if you're above that band or below it, you're not getting the stated purpose of "overcoming great hardship and then succeeding") enjoy it anyway. And while there are game and situations where adding in difficulty settings means a *wild* amount of work, a twitch game is not one of them; Matt Thorson managed to add in Assist Mode at the last goddamn second and he either did it himself or with maybe one other engineer. Every argument saying From Software *can't* add difficulty settings without compromising the core, original experience is disingenuous nonsense. Any argument saying they don't want to is fine, but I do think it limits their audience unnecessarily.

You only need seven of the eleven available lasers, which helps, as the game is non-linear, and not being able to clear a specific puzzle will not prevent you from beating the game. However, from a design perspective, it is *far* easier to just lengthen a timing window to help gamers with poor twitch skills. You could theoretically offer easier puzzles, but these would require a *very* large additional development time, because all new puzzles (in the hundreds) would have to be designed and tested. That said, if the Witness were to offer an easier mode for younger/less experienced/disabled players, GREAT! Why would I argue against that? Maybe Jonathan Blow didn't have the time or money, but if he did, of course I'd encourage it. I'm not mad at From Software (though I think they would be well served to offer it). I'm mad at people acting like an option would ruin their experience or some shit because they can't keep from hitting the easy button. See earlier bowling analogy.

"I want players to overcome very difficult odds to achieve a feeling of success". Sure, that's a wonderful design goal. But because players are of inherently different skill levels, this is a *fundamentally impossible thing* to achieve without difficulty levels (or theoretically, perfectly adaptive difficulty). It's like asking everyone to train to benchpress 120 kg. Sure, a lot of people could do it, but it would take some *far* longer than others, and some couldn't do it at all, for any number of reasons. In fact, there's a subset of From Software players who aren't hitting this design goal at all because they're *too fucking good*, and they would be better served by an even harder setting. Also LOL

From Software has access to orders of magnitude more resources than any indie would, but to answer your question: Celeste Beat Saber Just Shapes and Beats Slay the Spire Katana Zero Etc.Because 1) The Witness, while popular, has probably sold one tenth of what Sekiro has sold, and 2) The non-linear nature of the game makes it so that fewer players just can't beat it. It also never *removes* progress and forces a player to redo the same section of the game, over and over. You simply calmly contemplate the puzzle, and you either eventually get it or you don't. It's a very placid game.I he would have to remake most of the game to accommodate Easy Mode, and I have no problem if he doesn't want to, but that anyone arguing that if he *did* include an Easy Mode it would somehow ruin the experience for others is an entitled crybaby. I always wonder about people who say stuff like this. Constitutional amendments (of any real significance) are functionally gone. Straight up. 3/4th's of the states need to ratify them, and even if you color every state that's ever looked a tiny tinge purple sharp blue, you can't get there. The country is simply not capable of making those kinds of changes, not for a long time. It has nothing to do with how "motivated" we are. It's a broken system which unfortunately doesn't allow for its own modification, and nothing short of violent revolution can possibly change it at this point. And that won't happen until shit really starts to break down.

Thread I unwittingly befriended a famous rapist but then my friends came to the rescue
Last night. Pharaoh Karaoke, K-town in Los Angeles. You have to take a weird elevator to get down to the basement level. My three friends and I get in, a guy comes running up, I hold the door for him. We remark on how bizarre the whole set-up is as we descend, and we both get off the elevator. We walk up to the welcome desk, but it's chaotic in there, I eventually learn our reservation isn't till a bit later...and suddenly, my friends are gone. Where did they go? Neither of us has our parties here yet, apparently, so he offers to come around with me to find them. Nice guy! Shakes my hand, says his name is Max, he lives close by. Just looking for a chill night. We talk for a few minutes about nothing in particular, cool LA stuff we'd done, as we go back upstairs, wander a bit, circle back down. I text my friends, but I don't really have a signal. Finally, I see them. As I walk over, and start to say "Hey, this is--", one of the girls comes up and absolutely starts SCREAMING. That he wasn't welcome here, or anywhere, and that he was making everyone feel unsafe, how dare he...! I couldn't even fathom a scenario that made sense, here. This was a random dude who she couldn't possibly have known? Was it an ex? Why wouldn't she have said so earlier? Should I stop this? What's going-- And then one of my other friends comes up to me and whispers "That's Max Landis. Let her do her thing." oh, Oh, OH--- We basically kind of stood behind her, backing her up, but she had it handled. He made some weak protests, but eventually she drove him right into an elevator and presumably out of the building. I felt awful, of course, but I just didn't recognize the dude. I think I saw a picture of him once, but he'd changed his hair and I didn't exactly study the guy. Of all the possibly celebrities to just have a chill run-in with in Los Angeles, I get one of the absolute worst? Goddamn. But kudos to my friends for having my back, and especially to the fucking legend who drove him away. We then later sung Sam Smith and everyone had rounds of peach Soju so it was cool. Whew.

While the software design seems to be inadequate, I am not placing blame on Uber. It is a *known fact* that these vehicles aren't ready for full autonomy; the law explicitly prohibits any actual autonomy in all fifty states. The driver is solely ethically and legally responsible, because we're all aware that even the best tech solution, Tesla's, isn't yet ready for primetime. In addition, the jaywalker was, you know, jaywalking, in the dark. Maybe the human driver couldn't have reacted in time, even were they paying attention. This is not at all a condemnation of autonomous vehicles...though other legitimate gripes do exist, this situation is not at all one of them.

Thread What's the Most Exciting Mainstream Sport to Watch and Why?
No. Shootouts don't solve this problem. There is never a moment in a shootout, *ever*, where the next kick's success means you win, and that same kick's failure means you lose. (In the game itself. If ties are allowed, this difference could exist with point totals within the league structure.) I also think shootouts are inelegant as well, since 90% of the game's structure and rules are thrown away for what amounts to a bizarre skills challenge to determine the winner of a hard-fought game. Only sports where the score is capable of going up by more than 1 at a time does this feature exist. In basketball, if you're down by one, and you inbound with 2 seconds left, it's win or loss. In American football, with one second on the clock, down by five, and at the twenty yard line, it's win or lose. I watch both the men's and women's World Cups and assorted Champion's League games, thanks.

It's not backfiring, but it's not doing anything to decrease it, either. If you choose the absolute high point of his approval, 43.1, sure. But this has had almost no statistical impact over the timeline of the last two months, especially considering error margins. Not criticizing the impeachment, it was necessary (especially to a democratic base that demanded it), but as usual, very few people are changing their minds. You live in Reality A or Reality B. And Reality B people, by and large, cannot be reasoned with.

Thread Sondland Flips on Trump - Describing Ukraine Quid Pro Quo
Dude, you can choose the window however you want. Over the past 60 days, the graph has trended flat. Over the past 40 days, the graph has trended down. Over the past 20 days, the graph has trended flat. Over the past 10 days, the graph has trended *up*. The reason it's been all over the place is because the amounts going up and down are within 1 to 1.5 percentage points, a very small value and well within the statistical noise and error bars of polling. Therefore, in general, the graph has made no significant movements upward or downward. If you want to play with spin, sure, you can choose exact dates to attempt to maximize a "trend". But no statistician worth their salt would call this a clear trend of anything. I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but you have to be realistic. This entire proceeding has not yet had any real affect on changing any of that 41.5%'s mind. Still plenty of time to go, though.

The percentage of "up time" in a basketball game is far, far above football or baseball. The last couple minutes of a close game can slog, but that's it. Also, I know plenty about baseball, it sucks. Every pitch could be fouled, or be a single RBI, there is never a guaranteed "this is it" moment before the play starts.Soccer can have moments where the larger point structure of a league can force a "do or die" moment, that's true. But I find that inelegant and inconsistent. It should be built into the game rules, not the league rules.

If a player lands a kill shot off an 8 difficulty question with the Hammer of Hype, the Cursed Amulet of the Three, and the Cowl of Consistency (with an active combo), a player could score (80 + 10) x 2 x 3 + 20 gold, or *560* gold, theoretically, off one question. In this episode,In the end, it's half-game show half-funny interesting time with cool people. Ruthless strats are fun, but so are jolly vibes, so we tend to just let the players play how they play. It's a fun idea, even if the game ends up not so great. Do you tilt at commercials, billboards, radio ads, coupons? Do you live your entire life angry at fast food companies? I'm much more concerned at the game developers apparently not being credited. Poor work or no, that's a huge red flag in my book.

Thread Pitchers hitting in baseball is a joke...
Baseball, by design, has two completely different team activities, decoupled in time. Basketball has a smooth flow from offense to defense as play moves in real-time, similar to hockey, soccer, lacrosse, and otherwise. Football and baseball are decoupled (with the rare instance of a fumble or interception flipping the roles, and even then, only for a very brief period of time). Football understands there's no reason to ask players to do completely and utterly unrelated jobs, so it expands the roster and brings in specialists who are the very best at their position. Baseball does not do this, and players are expected to be very good at two very unrelated things. Luckily, the average time actually *doing* anything in baseball for an individual player is somewhere on the order of 1 minute for every 30 minutes of real time, pitcher and catcher excluded, so it's not very taxing on the body. I do not like baseball.

My edgy take is that there are literally no great original jRPG's on the Switch. You *can* play the FFXII remaster, which is great, or The World Ends With You: Final Remix (which is obviously not as good as the original DS version, but still great), or even Pokemon: Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu, but XBC2 and Octopath Traveler were extremely disappointing and Fire Emblem likely isn't what you're looking for. Absolutely not. According to recent stats (), the overall success rate is 48.2%, which about mirrors the odds of successfully kicking the extra point and then winning in overtime (Around 95% * 50% = 47.5%). Additionally, the current overtime rules in the NFL have literal RNG built into the odds of winning, which is wildly frustrating. And finally, if your offense is better than your defense, it becomes even more advantageous to just *win the game right there*. We have advanced metrics to help us with these decisions. And going to two to win the game outright is a perfectly sane decision.

It depends what you're really playing it for. If you want immersion, and feeling like you're really *in* a place, exploring a world, and interacting with characters, this was probably your GotY and maybe GotG. If you enjoy tightly-paced gameplay or structure, or you like the Just Cause series, you were likely frustrated by tanky controls, interminable animations, and linearity. All of which are done in service of the above presentation and immersion. It's that simple, to me, and the world deserves all types of games. I don't think that level of damning is really possible, minus literal pee tapes or audio with something along the lines of "fuck the United States of America". The GOP's base is bought in, it's a cult. Their leader can do no wrong, and if anything seems to show that, it's fake, or an attack by the deep state. The GOP abandoning Trump means their entire base fractures, and that's one thing keeping the GOP afloat: unity. They're done, probably forever, if that happens.

That isn't true. The +1 from the Hammer is multiplied out in Double Damage, it's multiplied out in kill shot double gold (or triple gold, with the Cursed Amulet!), and it applies to every answer answered correctly in the final round, as well. (Plus, the extra damage makes it easier to achieve kill shots.) Huber's Hammer of Hype is almost always worth it if purchased in Round 1. Cursed Amulet of the Three is also massive (Erica ended up getting a 120 G boost from it on one question ALONE in the last episode), though higher risk, since you need those kill shots. Cowl can pay off with the right strategy, but that typically involves using analyze a little more to pick off the easier questions. It's a valid strategy to kind of ignore kill shots and go for 1-3 difficulty questions, always nabbing a 20 G bonus and racking up Lucky Loot tokens. And the Wolf's Pelt has pockets, y'all.

I honestly don't think that strategy would work, tbh. You only have one third of available turns, so even with analyze, you won't be able to lock people out of reasonable questions. It also depends on players not being able to answer any 5/6/7/8's, which they invariably can on a strong category of theirs. Finally, while we did consider the potion buyout strat, that actually costs 240 G at the moment and 5 HP heals/more lesser potions can come from Lucky Loot Drops...there seemed to be a bizarrely low number of those drops this episode, but that's rare. Still, it might be prudent to buy a potion early...you'll probably need it eventually. A player will have 30/60 G before another has 240. Question difficulty is something we have trouble with. I'll admit that the Pikmin question should perhaps have been rated a 6 or 7, but in the end, for a lot of these categories, it's less about "how hard in this question" and more "have you played or seen this particular thing". Like, "What town does Parks and Recreation take place in" is a pretty easy question for anyone who's seen it, and literally impossible if you haven't. If you've played Pikmin 3, you probably knew the answer to that question, so we have to make a weird estimation of "approximately what percentage of the players on Mysterious Monsters, which include largely industry-working or industry-adjacent people, have played Pikmin 3 or at least seen major marketing for it". And that's pretty tough. Video games in particular are something that almost all guests are likely to be at least familiar with, but the general goal is to have contestants picking categories that they feel they have a higher than average knowledge in. I'm not sure anyone in Episode 4 even bought a potion; in Episode 5, they literally sold out the store. They were pulling from the same bank of questions. The upcoming Episode 6 randomly balances back toward center again, I think.

Because Naruto's voice actress is doing a better job not sounding like a 70 year old woman. I don't know what to tell you. There's is no contradiction. I don't know why you're bringing up Naruto; I straight-up don't care. I'm talking about Nozawa's voice and her ability to make me believe that that voice is reasonable for that character. Appearances matter because we understand that that kind of body type is basically impossible to achieve and maintain that voice. I don't want to get into a progressive-style debate here, but I'm curious to see if you can find an example of a body type like that with a similarly high voice. The testosterone involved deepens the voice significantly. And again, it's a fantasy show and it can do whatever it wants (Goku has alien physiology, of course), but I'm explaining why it feels out of place for an average viewer. No shade to Nozawa at all. She's doing what she was asked to do, to the best of her ability.

Who's backpedaling? A higher voice is a perfect fit for a small child or teen. In dubs, most small children are played by women. It's normal and we're used to hearing it. You can't compare an older, very high-pitched female voice actress playing a small child and one playing a mega roided out testosterone-fest. Luffy is a teenager, Naruto is a teenager, Edward Elric is a teenager.

(shrug) Naruto's Japanese voice, even in Boruto, seems reasonable to my ear. Nozawa just very much sounds like an older, much higher voice to my ear. Different voice actors do different stuff. It's not like they're all the same. While I certainly understand progressive choices in 2019, it just seems almost physically impossible that a physical architype like Goku's could possibly have that voice, and it's a weird impression. (Yes, yes, I know the show is full of impossible nonsense, I'm just telling you it's jarring to hear it. That's all.)

You just come off as a privileged white dude. Sorry. To constantly downplay how important politics are is an almost uniquely white thing, because for you and a lot of your friends and family, they're more academic than things that really impact your quality of life one way or another. But for the disenfranchised, it's literally their lives on the line. Police brutality, erasure of trans folks, demonization of immigrants, and so on. I am *not* criticizing you for not allowing politics to get in the way of your family relationships. That's fine. But I *am* criticizing you for sitting there and telling others that their fears and pain aren't important, and you think they should be ignored because arbitrary DNA ties somehow overrule those concerns. In addition, the author is specifically concerned because of the influence those people could be on an impressionable two-year-old, who obviously can't "just challenge them on their beliefs". Except that "taking the money" does not equate to "outsourcing", for the vast majority of people. The original post doesn't mention outsourcing. It just vaguely implies that less money = better art. I just hate to see the attitude of "well we need hungry artists" that gets used in predatory behavior throughout the industry.

The issue is the following: Scenario A: The two developers have a working salary, and will use additional funds to hire more artists/add more cooks/whatever. Scenario B: They are not being paid for their development work and will use funds to be able to properly give themselves a salary. I don't know their exact situation, but in the case of 99% of debut indie developers, it's Scenario B. I agree that suddenly outsourcing a bunch of art may not make the game better, but the implication of "these artists shouldn't take this money because it will make the game worse" is, at best, a wildly uninformed statement and should never have been made.

The implication is that developers should *not* take money up front for their work, the way every normal job in the universe does, if they're able to, because "real art comes from struggling" or some other bullshit stereotype thrown around to constantly and viciously undervalue and underpay artists. Many indie developers struggle to make ends meet while they develop. And while maybe great profits may come after release, they are certainly no guarantee. Chastising a developer for *taking money for their work*, because you think artists somehow work better when they're struggling to put food on the table, is disgusting. I'm not commenting on the overall decision or their tone in the blog, but that post is gross.

(shakes head) The 1000-sided die isn't "unfair". It's to give you fine-grained control over the chances of something dropping. With a 1000-sided die roll needing to be less than a number determined via a formula, you can have the drop percentage be any percentage to a tenth of a percentage point; i.e., a 9.7% chance of dropping, or a 78.3% chance of dropping. A 63-sided die means you only have 63 available "percentages" to assign...which is probably okay, in the end, it's just weird. The formula (the numerical constants, specifically) would change, of course, when using a 1000-sided die versus a 63-sided die. I'm just saying the general technique isn't that strange.

It's honestly how I might code it, albeit I would probably use a 1000 sided die, not 63. Maybe weird limitations of random number gen at the time, I dunno.

I remember there being two wholly separate 3-part combos, but now there are two combos that share the same opener. - 2.2 content was mostly trash. Leviathan Hard was kinda cool, but very easy, at least for current players. - How should I approach gear, right now? I had Wyrm gear (iLvl 90) from when I used to play, and the 2.2 MSQ gave me some iLvl 90 items for free. I get the sense I shouldn't bother grinding for Allagan stuff because I'm just going to naturally obtain much more powerful stuff via progression. - And on that note, should I bother clearing the dungeons that were released in these patches, like Brayflox (Hard) and stuff? (And Leviathan EX?) I think you get a big first-time completion Allagan bonus, but I don't know if those are relevant anymore, and I'm more keen on progressing on to Heavensward, I think.

Question: I'm doing this Lady Yugiri/Doma stuff, which was apparently put into the game in Patch 2.2 (shortly after I stopped playing). How long is this seemingly filler MSQ stuff go on before Heavensward proper?

Well...there's seemingly no way to skip to the cool HW stuff, so off I go, collecting black scales and finding children in Vesper Bay. Bleh.

Thread Balding and Microblading
As usual, I feel compelled to tell everyone in this thread with the edgy "be a real man, go bald and hit the gym" to calm the hell down. My hair transplant is an actual miracle, as far as I'm concerned. Seven years on and it still looks absolutely incredible. No one I've ever met was able to tell it was a transplant (unless they knew me beforehand), and if you've got the money, it's more than worth it. Hitting the gym is still cool, though.

Thread Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers |OT| First World Problems
Okay. I played FFXIV 2.0 for around 11 months when it released, had a really good time. Quit a bit in advance of Heavensward, and despite hearing good things, I wasn't in a place to jump back in, so I didn't. But everyone is talking about Shadowbringers like holy fuck, so... ...first off. I got a free copy of Heavensward a few months back. Is it good? Moreover, if I attempt to complete it, will I find able and willing souls to help me do so? (I am not on Ultros, it should be mentioned...it seems as though a transfer will cost me $18.) I don't even know if I'm near the end of MSQ 2.0; I have vague memories of fighting a scary armor man voiced by Richard Epcar in a fight with a shitton of lasers. Or should I jump ahead to Shadowbringers? I'm also a Dragoon and I remember being kind of a weaker job (or was it class?) so maybe I should consider upping one of the new ones. It might be tough for me to pick up Dragoon because I absolutely forget fucking everything about the job, and I won't have the first 50 levels to "learn" it, so maybe I should pick something else...but I remember 1-50 taking a not insignificant amount of time and the MSQ really helping, so how slow is it to bring something else up?

Why does it matter, the source of the income? If each team is generating approximately the same revenue in sum total, why should the players not be receiving equivalent amounts of money to take home to their families?

Thread United States Men's National Team loses tournament final vs bitter rival Mexico just ten hours after Women win the WC
Collective bargaining agreements here might be the issue, but I'm not sure why separate collective agreements apply to two groups who fall under the revenue umbrella of an organization that manages sponsorships for both simultaneously (and which comprise over fifty percent of total revenue, apparently). USSF is arguing it doesn't have to do anything about the money coming in from FIFA, which is more for the men's side, despite them sucking. I would argue that, yes, they do have to do something, because the women's performance is generating them more income at the end of the day. Fix the collecting bargaining agreement or merge them. If they don't, the women should strike, because it's bullshit. Or sue, which they are.

Except that, again, an audit conducted from 2016 from 2018 revealed that the women's team generated more revenue. And that's in a period without a Women's World Cup!

Unless I misread something, the USWNT brings in far more revenue than its counterpart.

Thread Spider-Man: Far From Home |Spoiler OT| Even dead, I'm the hero
There was just so much sitcom-level "oh no what a wacky coincidence causing problems!" bullshit in this movie that I had trouble enjoying it. Brad's picture, the accidental drone strike, and even Peter saying "execute them all" (even if Mysterio somehow programmed EDITH to phrase it that way, that is not a natural way to respond in any case). It's incredibly lazy writing. Pacing was weird and it just didn't feel cohesive. I really like Holland and Zendaya, but this was a rougher MCU film for me.

Thread CNN poll: Biden falls to 22%; Harris surges to second; Sanders drops to fourth
While they would crush Trump in a debate in an academic sense, I don't think that they would "win" like Harris would in the eyes of (the few, remaining, idiotic) independent/moderate voters. They need to see him burned down and taken to task. I *love* Warren, number one choice, but I don't think she can do that effectively. Sanders actually maybe could, but he's been inconsistent in debates in the past.

Yeah, I actually really like Harris, but the situation regarding her "bad record" (which, again, involves enforcing the laws of California) is taken wildly by a lot of Sanders/Warren supporters, and I worry these issues are going to blow up in the general and cause idiotic fractures again. She's been KILLING it as my senator and there's no better politician alive in a debate, I feel like.
