Thread Halo Infinite Update - February 2021 [New Campaign Screenshots]
It’s referred to as an Alloy in the books. But ultimately it’s a sci-fi material of something that doesn’t exist in the real world. From my conversations with those involved in the game this provides certain challenges because these types non existent materials don’t have a real life counterpart for a visual reference. In a game where you have both stylistic and naturalistic rendering, there is a challenge between making things look “right” , maintaining the style and actually continuing to show physically accurate , non existent materials. This was not discussed with me - but I wonder how many of these sci-go materials existed in that original demo. Are there materials that are a sci-fi metalloid. Not many of us have any items in our life made from solid oxygen for example . How would that look?

I don't think this is a suprise The shortage of consoles and delays to development kind of work together to mean that a delay is sensible for multiple reasons. I think at this point it's trying to work out which of the big games are they going to still release in 2021.

Of course there is diminishing returns, but I’m sure as them goes by and the optics that movies are shot with increase in resolution and movies are rendered out in such a way they aren’t trying have have the perceived look as older movies and HDR increases the contrast of image - even higher resolutions will be more perceptible. In fact this study even supports this, the scene with the highest Maxfall and MaxCLL was the one that was recognised as looking better , even on a display that can only display a fraction of that. It’ll be interesting to see this in future on a better display

Thread Digital Foundry: The Medium PC Tech Review: Yes - It Really is Super Demanding on PC Hardware
Even so, HOW do they test them? There are a lot of things in the AV chain to consider and I can’t imagine all developers have an in house specialist or their home setups are often calibrated in any shape or form, let alone to account for the specifics of HDR and gaming. I only know of a few studios that even have multiple monitors and whilst Vincent often goes to calibrate production studio equipment for movie/tv studios, I don’t think he’s ever done a games studio. Ultimately I don’t think it’s given the same resource as movies/Tv, where there are multiple job roles to handle these things.

Thread Digital Foundry: The Medium PC Tech Review: Yes - It Really is Super Demanding on PC Hardware
It’s not right in SDR, so it’s not unique to HDR. One of the difficulties with talking about HDR is that it’s not just a technical thing, there is an art component which is arguably more important. But the reality of it is, there are not enough experts outside of the mathematics of getting it working. Which is why we keep seeing such inconsistencies in titles, games that are so extremely contrasty users scream “crushed blacks” and games that have got it wrong and users scream “raised blacks”. You then have a spectrum of games that do it successfully , that either look generically punchy or aim for a look which many players still perceive as “wrong”. Since I started doing the HDR analysis and even did some work for DF on RDR2 there is an increasing appetite for it and for a while developers even started reaching out to me for consulting work; but this has really died back again. coincidentally we’ve had a big uptick of atrocious setups in game over the last 6 months. Perhaps a byproduct of Covid and working from home.

Thread Rumor - apple VR set to potentially have dual 8k displays, $3000
You need that kind of resolution if you are doing eye tracking and foveated rendering to ensure you get a full resolution where you are looking . You just render the area in front of your eye at full resolution (maybe an area equivalent to 1080p) and then all of your periphery at like 1/8th of the native resolution for the rest. Then you are only doing roughly the overall number of pixels not too far off 1440p native. That’s before you consider that you can also use other stuff like VRS and other smart tech/design to reduce load for the periphery. At that point you are heading towards being much more feasible on current hardware.

Thread What do you think about « gaming motion interpolation » on TV ?
The biggest issue historically had been the input latency penalty, but several flagship TVs have it with a minimal hit. I’ve tired playing games with it and the actual effort of smoothing the image is pretty convincing - the real issue is that you WILL end up seeing ghosting and artifacts sometimes. It depends a lot on the content and the type of game you are playing. I wouldn’t base a purchase on it, but it doesn’t do any harm to try and see what you think. The issue with the video he had posted above is that it’s A: Tiny on screen and B: Shot at 30fps - so the actual interpolated frames may be removed altogether or blurred into the really frames in this video- making it harder to see them.

I suppose the things is the R&D to some extent is a fixed cost, you have teams of people employed all the time to deliver a product once every 7 years. So in lots of ways it makes a lot of sense to try and make additional use of that talent - plus I have no doubt that the learnings of the hardware and software of the previous years have a positive benefit on the “REAL” next generation machines.

They've updated the engine to now include Screen Space reflections, also they will both be native next-gen versions, so there should be an overall performance improvement I'd expect, perhaps things like increases in crowed density on some of the busier levels.(although it's 4K 60 on Series X already) I'd also imagine an increase in the resolution of the planar reflections over the last gen machines too, so generally, things will look better. The art and lighting does all the heavy lifting for visuals, so I imagine some may not even spot those differences.

I suspect that their servers will treat H2 and 3 as the same thing , so the content will all revolve around that. They have explicitly said that your progress earned within the H2 client on steam will carry across into the H3 client - as the H2 levels are DLC for H3 (even on Epic) there is no need for a H2 client on epic. The original game was published by another publisher, so I suspect that interfered with H16’s data transfer- as it likely belonged to square-Enix.

LThey will be expensive , the smaller displays are more expensive to make , hopefully this is an indication they are on their new manufacturing process, so hopefully it won’t be as bad as is has been. Even so , I’d imagine you are going to be sitting firmly in the premium price range for a Pc monitor. If you look at what is out there right now ; that is usually the similar price to a TV. So those key animation frames will exist at the same point in time whether the game is 60 or 120fps , it’s the non-artist set frames that make up the bulk of what you see.

The problem with this logic is that things can never change if someone doesn’t come forwards and do it. I think it depends on the experience that you want, personally, I like playing the story missions first- as these often give you an overall idea of how the level you are on works, what some of the key areas are and how to get into them. Some of the levels are so sprawling they are daunting, for me, the enjoyment comes from knowing them well and finding all of the stuff that comes after those very crafted, setpiece missions

Thread (SciresM) Switch revision "Aula" has been datamined from the Switch firmware - 4K support, OLED screen, potentially a new dock for added power
OLED displays are physically degraded by temperature and as we know a switch in a dock can get toasty - this would possibly make it a bad choice for a handheld. The brightness will degrade faster for a display type which is already typically less bright than even a cheap LED and this is going to be one of the key considerations for a handheld device , just like it is for a laptop or phone. This is actually one of the barriers for OLEDs being used at scale for automotive uses- you need very bright diplays so you can see instruments in bright daylight- but also you need a display that can withstand the interior heat of a car parked in summer- whilst providing a useable long life.

Thread TV tech talk: Why arent there tvs with display port and why did HDMI become standard instead of it?
I presume it’s the cost vs. the need from consumers. I would guess that there is other electronics that form part of the overall signal pipeline that makes it a cost prohibitive option as there is perhaps nothing off the shelf that can be used. The Nvidia BFG displays are perhaps a good indication of this.

Thread TV tech talk: Why arent there tvs with display port and why did HDMI become standard instead of it?
1. HDMI came before DisplayPort both in concept and for actually physically showing up in displays. By the time DP had launched in the first PC monitor there were already millions of HDMi only displays and the PS3. 2. HDMi was made by the Japanese TV manufacturers for Av use and VESA who created DisplayPort are an American entity. HDMi works over significantly longer distances and from the start supported things like CEC and a standardised method of sending data about the source content. Display port was designed to replace vga/dvi and thus there was less consideration for made for audio and device control. HDMi also had a more stringent set of supported resolutions/refreshrates/colour systems which all compliant devices needed to support- as it was a plug and Play solution for TVs and disc players

Thread TV tech talk: Why arent there tvs with display port and why did HDMI become standard instead of it?
The signal can degrade to a point where the error correction systems that they have no longer function and you will get visible artifacts. You can get around this by using more expensive and higher quality cable materials. Because DP supported higher bandwidth when it launched it 2008, certified cables were capped at a less than 6feet because of this. This problem has crept up on HDMI also over time as the bandwidth required by 4K, HDR and now higher framerate support by hdmi 2.1 devices. -Which is why there are certified cables which can handle to maximum bandwidth the system offers

Thread TV tech talk: Why arent there tvs with display port and why did HDMI become standard instead of it?
USB-C can send a DP signal, but it is not part of the spec. And again that is one of the issues for DisplayPort on the whole , audio isn’t actually a mandatory part of the spec. Lots of optional things. We’ve seen this type of thing with HDMI 2.1 and USB 3.2. It’s not a great situation for consumers USB 4 supports DP 2.0 as standard, which is great news; but I would imagine that the cost of 4 will mean 3.2 will be used for years to come. What were we doing for the 4 years with the 80+ million HDMI devices that would have already existed come 2008? That also includes things the other things that required HDMI features such as BluRay discs and video streaming services. Also in this timeline we’d still be 5 years behind consumer uptake on DP, so you might have users who wouldn’t have had a TV with DP launch when the PS4/Xbox came out , so would those consoles have had a different connector also? Or would DP only have shown up in a hardware revision a few years later too? :P Does this mean that in 2020 we’d have still had people considering buying a new TV with a DP for the first time?

Yeah, each level is it’s own thing, the only reason the story really exists is to send you to another part of the world to kill someone in a particular environment. As for tips for replaying? For me there is an element of ticking things off the lists , I’d start by playing each map and doing the mission stories , so you can see the main “plot” of each map and get a good grounding of some of the more developer constructed assasinations. I think they were called opportunities in H16, but they renamed it to make it clearer what these were. Those also act as almost a tutorial for each map, so you know where key areas are, where characters might go , Howe to access certain places and perform specific kills. Each map has 3 or so of these.

I miss the Sony that brought us Ape Escape, Journey, folklore, Puppeteer, PAIN, PixelJunk Eden, Locoroco, Fat Princess, Shadow of the Collossus, Tokyo Jungle + the countless new IPs they tried and retired. There are too many to list across their history, modern PlayStation doesn’t come close to PS3 era Sony, let alone Ps2. In all fairness, I don’t think this is unique to Sony either, I think games on the whole are far less interesting than they have been. The gen just gone was the worst one IMO. And of course the budget does have something to do with it, you don’t get the same risks taken when you have a game that has had a 1000 people working on it that has cost 250million to make and market, which is why there is a degree of homogeneity across the huge games that Sony and other big publishers are famous for. People have forgotten that VRR doesn’t mean that you have to constantly have a refresh rate changing, but it can mean that you can leverage it for a different arbitrary fixed fresh rate, whatever you want that to be, it could be 72fps for example. Ideally we want some options, if 4 years of midgen upgrades and backwards compatibility should have taught us is that we do not want developers to be totally locking games down - because they will continue to exist onto other hardware beyond what we have today.

Not for 10bit content (HDR) , that’s not possible ,as that would exceed the bandwidth hdmi 2.0. You could do that at 8bit, but your HDR content will take a quality hit as that’s 1/4 of the colour information of 10bit.

It’s new in that we have enough bandwidth to deliver native pixels to a 4K TV alongside HDR. A complete solution for TVs is new :D My old Samsung could do 1440p 120hz, but I don’t want to take the hit on pixels for that in most situations Battlefield 1 is capped at 60fps and you need to disable HDR and in order to get the X1X to output 120hz, which again is another big sacrifice. Dolby Vision does this, but only based upon a handful of parameters entered by the manufacturer . As as the user decides they don't like the image, turns on /off processing, changes the colour temperature to one they like the look of, it all goes out the window anyway. Freesync Premium and compatible games also do the same thing. That's what the system option on Playstation and Xbox is meant to help with now. Set it once by eye (accounting for user variabilities) and games just pull through the saved parameters. The issue with this then becomes if a game hasn't used an appropriate display mapper - these values wont apply. Like the ones that offer brightness and contrast as their only option. .

The bigger issue try to get things right is that those SDR games use a gamma formula and HDR uses the PQ EOTF , these 2 methods are entirely incompatible, so matching them exactly can’t really happen. ^This is why why HLG was created as a HDR format for broadcast, as it is backwards compatible within SDR. I’m hoping that the reason they have done this is forward planning for the dashboard- you have to cut the ties to the past at some point. Modern TVs can usually seamless switch in and out of HDR without the blanking you see. If you’ve used Netflix in a built in TV app it will switch between HDR/SDR as you move across the title images. It’s really obvious if you have different colour temperatures set! The blanking itself is a part of how HDMI 2.0 works. There are a lot of ?’s and possibilities for what can be right and wrong with this , so I need to spend more time looking at it.

So on the current Xbox’s you can set the resolution , but it is overridden by anything that is 4K/HDR. You can’t do 1440p or 1080p with HDR for example, it maxes out what your display can do. I would set my xbox to 1440p, which output all SDR content to 120hz , but when a 4K/HDR game was booted it would override that. Looking at Tom’s image and description it sounds like they have decoupled the 4K resolution from the UHD/HDMI features so you can have more control.

That's the limitation of the current approach, the colour space gets expanded , which in turn increases the saturation. There are few shipping HDR games that have done the same. Xbox HDR limits the width of the colour gamut to Rec709 , but extends the colour volume vertically to help with highlights. There are also other limitations in regards to game's eye adpatation and exposure settings with SpecialK also doeant touch - hence the black crush. Again this is something common in some of the less considered HDR games. This paired up with white becoming super white can create a super contrasty and overwhelmingly intense image. Games can render at whatever resolution they want internally. It just means that if you want to play a a game that offers a 120hz or want to use VRR for 30/60fps content - you will have to do so either with a 1080p resolution. Black Ops for example offers 4K 120hz output to make sure you get the highest acuity and the leafs latency. It means you won’t be able to do that on a 1440p monitor. It will be downscaled to or rendered at 1080p.

Let’s hope it is coming. I always feel like PlayStation are in tune with that hardcore , so it’s an odd thing to neglect. I think three are 3 factors which make me nervous though 1440p isn’t a TV standard and is reported differently by the TV’s edid. Sony of course want to sell new TVs, so offering support for a product they don’t make doesn’t help them. We’ve seen pressure from the consumer electronics division on PlayStation before . Note that Sony have put an 8K logo on the box of PS5... The PS3 3D debacle is a good example of this cross involvement. It’s super niche. Sony will know what % or players are connected to PC monitors and what the capability of those displays is. So it will be very low priority vs other engineering tasks. There is no freesync on Ps5 as far as we know, so you’d want a 2.1 monitor anyway

Thread PSA: Potential Issues with the Sony X900H/X9000H/XH90/X90CH and Next Gen Gaming
I've tested this recently. So as it stands, for a game with VRR enabled : such as Destiny 2 which might drop a few frames here and there from 30fps, you can lose those without judder. It's a window in which VRR can effectively work here for a display with an advertised 40-60hz range (is 20-30fps) So we have the evidence that "LFC" which is a marketing term does function. Obviously, it's of little value to have such a small value as you can't cover those intermediate areas between the double frames and the native output of the display. So to handle a framerate that is 39fps for example which is 1hz below the minimum window, you need a display with 78hz in order to frame double. However, to handle a frame rate drop to 28fps, you only need a display with 56hz native support. Now for our 60FPS games they can float within that native range of 40-60 easily without any changes. But drop down below 40 fps (but higher than 30) and you have no native refresh left, the display back to 60fps and you will get the normal judder you would associate with a vsync mismatch. TDLR Any games that are between 30-40fps can not benefit from VRR on a 60hz display, but FPS above/below that can. (20-30 / 40-60) Obviously, the examples here are contingent on a 40-60 display. one with 48-60hz ranges are going to be operate with 2 slightly different ranges. Of course all of this stuff is there to smooth out far larger fluctuations than what is described here.

They usually get announced in January at CES, then release 6months after that. Right now, there just isn't much choice. It's a relatively easy choice to pick the LG OLEDs as they have everything covered, but if you don't want to spend that kind of money or feel that LCD is the right option, then options are limited. And ultimately I suspect they will be for quite some time as there is a cost both for hardware and for the panels to be able to support these features - which as of right this second are super niche and specific only to high-end gaming machines. We haven't seen a big drop in cost for quality HDR sets over the last 5 years and now they have all this other stuff to cost in too.

Thread PSA: Potential Issues with the Sony X900H/X9000H/XH90/X90CH and Next Gen Gaming
Q80t is a nice TV, but look up at its image performance game mode, it blooms more than others. On Xbox it will default to 4k 120hz if the TV is capable (in the same way it defaults to 4k 60hz on current-gen) I don't know about Ps5. But if you are going to try and avoid 4k 120 on the Sony. Just buy a better TV that only does HDmi 2.0 of which there are many. Hell find one that does 1080p 120hz as that is fundamentally what you are getting here.I would presume they have tested something with a 20fps framerate and have concluded that is the range: when in fact that is simply their source device frame doubling and it's probably a native range of 40-60hz. Same difference I suppose when it comes to games. They are super methodical, so it is unusual for them to overlook something, perhaps now there is more tooling available there will be more info.

Thread PSA: Potential Issues with the Sony X900H/X9000H/XH90/X90CH and Next Gen Gaming
This must be about the 15th time I've written this. I'm not sure why people are trying so hard to downplay the option to have the best image quality available to them. Especially as Feeding a 4K 120hz signal doesn't require a 4K 120hz rendered piece of content, but it requires you to be able to A send it from the source device, get it across a cable and have the display process it. Obviously, we know what resolution does, but we have seen many titles that render above the alledged sweet spot of 1440p on consoles, whether this is natively or it is via checkerboard. Unless you're plan is for games to render at a Even when those games are 30fps, there are benefits. As for the refresh rate, there are multiple reasons we want 120hz Even if the game is 30fps, this can reduce input latency. For non vsync'd or adaptive sync games this can make tears appear nearer the top of the screen. This can help reduce judder in games with poor framepacing. This also facilitates Wider VRR ranges. If you are running at 60hz, then you will be limited to a VRR range of 20-30fps and 40-60fps. Leaving a gap of 30-40fps meaning potential residual judder/tearing. Having a 120hz display means you can cover 20-60fps easily with VRR AND go above 60fps.[/QUOTE]

I’m a sure it stated that you can’t patch a PS4 into a PS5 game. As far as we know Enhancements that are being made to existing games are purely in the form of patches to the PS4 game, such as unlocking the frame rate so it works better on PS5. You cant answer a question with another question. What does an upgradable graphics card have to do with PC’s switch to becoming an entirely digitised marketplace? PC sat alongside Console games for the longest time , MMO’s took the ownership out of the equation and made the subscription the important part. Valve made the most anticipated PC exclusive digital only and unsealed the cork of Pc games’ move to digital only. Not via the method that they use here as it happens in the display controller literally the moment before it's sent to your TV. It might be more possible in Xbox One games, as that supports multiple display planes, which the HUD might sit on (but only in titles using the Xbox's APIs natively), but I suspect that would likely be a big undertaking and might not yield many games with that as a result.

Thread Digital Foundry | Xbox Series X Auto HDR tested - what works and what doesn't?
This is more common than people realize, especially with older games where there wasn't the same level of production sophistication. Whenever I have spoken to developers, the HDR is primarily being handled by engineers, despite it being a artist driven thing. Right now for many studios either the tooling or the hardware to handle HDR in a straightforward way for countless artists doesn't exist or the processes to get it setup are unknown or don't exist. It's kind of like the IT and infrastructure issues that any business has. Colour science is a huge topic and whilst super clever people can crunch numbers and write the code, you still need a degree of human validation and sanity checking against how users might actually utilise said content. There are a number of games that actually have faulty brightness adjustments in SDR, let alone HDR. There is no way that anybody who understood what they were doing or what they were looking at would sign off some of those options - and that in itself suggests that there are aspects of videogames that simply do not have a considered end result. Lots of games don't have a reference setup for end output and there is no colourist role defined in most productions, as you would see in TV or Movie content, so ultimately who is responsible and are they qualified to decide? I think that's before you even consider games with configuration options. Is the creators intent that I put my PC game on all low settings and the game looks like ass?

Tom talked about logos, but yes, this will extend to all kinds of menus and elements within many games. Fortunately unlike some Native HDR titles , the colours are more saturated than what they are in SDR, so that is slightly less stressful than we see in some poor UI implementations like God of War, Desitny 2 and Rocket league. That was always going to be a problem, there are lots of games from the 360/PS3 era that had a lot of white clipping in clouds. There will be a bunch of them like that, also very bloomy games suffer in similar way .

Thread Are you getting new 4k displays for the new consoles? or continue playing at 1080p?
Some are , but just as a game being 4K now means one of several things or upto 4K (dynamic res, checkerboard etc) I expect games saying they support 120fps is shorthand for upto 120fps. As soon as you introduce HDR into that, you end being limited to 1080p. I’d rather play upto 4K on a 4K display than 1080p. Now if you’ve got a game that’s 70fps-90fps and is 1400p with HDR you are making big compromises to get that onto your display. Also, you will be stuck with a hud at the resolution of your display. Also it means you need know exactly what games are running in what modes and manually switch your console’s settings- as it’s unlikely they will switch automatically. Especially when games switch their internally rendering within a 4K canvas anyway.

That’s before you consider sparse rendering, Dynamic Resolution, ML upscaling and Varible Rate Shading. These all mean that we don’t need to speak about “resolution” in such a blunt and rigid way anymore.

I mean, many people simply can’t as they don’t have either good enough contrast or visual acuity to recognise it. But that aside, and as others have said. The size of your TV, the distance you sit and the resolution at which the output is displayed are all going to have varying levels of effect on how easily it can be seen. I don’t have to sit much closer to my normal viewing distance to suddenly be aware I could do with more resolution even in nearly 4K games. That would be more pronounced, more often if I had a bigger display.

It is an odd one because the interface is all drawn in website like way. There are possible network/bandwidth things to go with it- you are going to want 4X the resolution assets and greater internet bandwidth to go with it. But it all seems so negligible for such a capable machine. It almost doesn’t seem real. It’s especially a surprise as there was code found in the OS that referred to the “4K shell” which I had assumed was the flag to render the dashboard in 4K. If the PS4 runs the dash in HDR, then it might be limited to 422 as the current consoles are. I don’t know much about what the setup is for resolution/refresh rate, but given how they I think they are handling HDR switching across the system, I suspect it will be locked in at 4K 120hx all the time - with such high bandwidth they may choose to restrict Chroma sub-sampling to decrease the inevitable problems that will occur with users using the wrong/long cables. That’s what I would do if I were them anyway

This is exactly why MS needed teams of engineers working on the emulation of various different hardware components and why games did/didn’t work with them. games to be worked on individually, this is going to be even more problematic for PS3 as you will have had even more games doing weird stuff. The UK physical figures are so minuscule generally, it's hard to draw any real conclusions. They are so minuscule that even the Playstation UK people on Era buying the game on playstation would be enough to create that ratio difference. Also, the crash games always had super long sales tails, so once the casuals and kids are buying it as Christmas approaches, that difference will become more in line with what you'd expect

Thread Xbox Series X has tactile indicators over the ports to help the blind
Maybe the cables that ship with the console have the corresponding dots. I can’t ever “feel” the orientation of an HDMI cable and believe me, I have tried repeatedly. I can’t imagine how hard it must to find things as hard as that for even the most trivial things in life. This is certainly a better option than doing nothing at all.

Thread About to buy an LG OLED for PC Gaming, do I need to fret about burn in?
It's not like the days of CRT where we could just send an input and get and output that we could tweak with some dials and pots. LG Display and LG electronics for example don't cross over so much when a new TV is created, so LG OLEDS have a bunch of hardware/firmware that means they are essentially Gamma 2.2 native. Now consider that all production video content is gamma 2.4 and HDR isn't gamma, you immediately have some electronics and processing happening on the LG Electronics side to offset the LG Display hardware. There is always some kind of processing happens with a digital signal - YCC to RGB, RGB to RGBW, managing near black artifacts to name a few. That's before looking at the LUTS and CMS systems that drive the final image - and that is assuming that the user is even choosing to display an image with as little deviation from the panel's native capabilities.

Thread Camera enthusiasts, why are Leicas so expensive?
Lots of people that want the Leica lifestlye , but don't want to spent the Leica money will go for one of the Fuji cameras now. Especially if you are less interested in editing, they have a bunch of film emulation filters built-in that give all of their photos a trendy retro look straight from the camera. I know a lot of people like that instant cool.

Thread Camera enthusiasts, why are Leicas so expensive?
A combination of low volume production, high-quality manufacture, and brand prestige which makes them desirable. They are probably made in Germany, to incredibly high standards also. I used to work for ZEISS who are similar in this regard and there were various processes and materials that could be used in the optics side of things that were really performant, but incredibly expensive.

Thread Xbox Series X/S appears to use modified CFexpress interface for external storage
Yeah, you just need to useI guess you have to look at the reasons why they Have done it in the first place. Size Ease of Access Plug and Play Portability Easy to support Those factors explain why we have the solution we have now and this is in line with The Xbox’s longstanding support for USB storage. If you take the more cynical view that they wanted to make a few $ from licensing the Xbox brand to Seagate for each unit sold , then I’m sure there were even more inflexible ways they could have achieved this that were more beneficial, whilst using cheaper parts. The reality of this is that any adapter realeased of hacked together by the community is not going to be a mainstream solution that sits in a retail box next to the games in Walmart. It’s kind of the antithesis of what a console is. In the same way you’ll have found very few people that have upgrade their Xbox internal drives to SSDs or faster devices which might give marginal , enthusiast increases in performance.

Thread Xbox Series X/S appears to use modified CFexpress interface for external storage
This has been speculated for a while that it looked like the Xbox Series X/S expansion storage could have been a variant on CFexpress cards. You can see in the image above how similar the shape of the card is and also how the layout and pins and number of pins appear to be shared between the 2 devices. Jez Corden last night confirmed this is the case. Now presumably Xbox's requirement to have a removable and portable storage media that is fast enough for next gen titles took them down the route of looking at CFexpress. If you aren't familiar with Compact Flash, it is a long-standing storage format, most typically used by DSLR cameras, more recently it was phased out by SD cards in many instances, but as we rapidly approach the limit of speed within SD cards and the need for faster portable camera storage increases, due to 4K /8K/HDR video bandwidth, CFexpress has stepped in to offer a solution. CFe cards would however be both prohibitively expensive - they are designed to be very small and to not generate as much heat. This combination of factors means that even a card that falls short of what the Xbox Series S/X requires is currently significantly more expensive than it's physically larger cousins, 1TB at 1700MBps is £922 here ($1203) So it looks as if Microsoft has taken the basic CFexpress interface, encased it in a larger heatsink/shroud (which is thermally connected to the inside of the machine) which has opened the doors to faster/cheaper/larger NVME chips vs the type more commonly used within the CFexpress cards. So what does this mean? Hopefully, this should mean that due to the standard nature of the interface, adapters to use other types of storage can easily be produced by 3rd parties. (recently confirmed to be coming in the future) It even means that you may be able to if you are so inclined. Use a or adapter to attach an M2 drive to your Xbox. Although this solution isn't significantly cheaper than the official devices, this should calm the thoughts of those concerned that this propriety device might mean that costs over time would be artificially inflated. Like the PS5 however, a custom solution is going to need to be benchmarked for sustained and throttled speed to ensure it matches what the games are designed to use. However even you didn't choose to go this route for your next gen titles, this does open the door to a faster than USB 3.1 storage to be used, even for your BC "cold" storage.

yeah, I linked to a couple of options in the OP. I'm not sure if the physical connector is the same shape at this point, but there are definitely electronics that allow this to happen.

But yeah, SSDs are hot An NVME drive will be 60-80 degrees centigrade if you measure them. It’s why so many of them have a heat sink as an option and you can even get coolers for them

it works on Xbox One games also, providing they don’t already offer it Games that are particularly cinematic in aesthetic work well as they tend to throw out less data to begin with. Quantum Break and Control both work really well. From what I’ve seen the image is kept within its original colour gamut. So colour cannot be more saturated than it ever was.

It’s about them trying to respect certain components of what makes the game look the way it does. Most people have their colour saturation up beyond that anyway, so they are getting a more saturated image anyway. That’s probably why it’s best not to interfere with it

There are some distinct advantages this has over what TVs can do. Primarily that you can apply the SDR-HDR conversion to an image that is 10bit+ The TV is hamstrung by the bit depth it is presented with. This system has been trained on game content- something which is typically not the content focus for these types of things on TVs. In terms of what the TVs , I’m sure you could get to a approximation of it utilising the various adjustments you can apply on a TV.

DM them to meI would writing off speakers/home theatre support at this point, although Sony paid soundbars a little lip service, the experience is going to be pretty poor compared to headphones. People can talk themselves around it, but not only do you need to account for the shape of your ear, but you also need to account for the acoustic properties of every single surface in your room.

There isn’t any support for this, this is what the newer audio formats are designed to facilitate, but there has been no word if there is hardware support for DTS-X or Dolby Atmos on PS5. Any kind of speaker setup is going for be inferior to an HRTF system when it comes to positioning , as you aren’t prohibited by the number of speakers and the position of the speakers you have in your setup. All of that goes away with these headphone based systems

Thread PS5 has 664 GB usable storage, Astro's Playroom 2,4 GB
What they've said is that the PS5 has more lanes of data available and it also has some additional granular detail to control the priority, he said in that presentation that 3rd party drives would like have to exceed the PS5's raw speed in order to compensate/brute force for those other customizations. This is one of the reasons why they needed create recommendations for SSDs and benchmark these drives themselves. A drive might appear to work, but it might lose it's shit on a title that is putting a greater strain on the iO and is more carefully using those priority control options. The chances are we are a long way off that being an issue given many of the games have started life on a PC dev kit, or PS4 or are releasing on PS4. Even so, you don't want to be running out and buying that storage with the view it will work well with all games, when it may not.
