Basically, just check that your monitor doesn't have it's own setting in a menu for limited/full. Alternatively try switching to RGB 8bit with full range video and see if that looks correct (just to rule it out) I had a quick look in the manual and could not see an option for it, however there is a colour option which you have to set at REC2020 for HDR What value do you typically arrive at with other HDR games that have a labled value for peak brightness?

The series X is doing something more sophisticated in some other custom hardware, this same hardware may also be used to provide some accessibility options for visual issues , such as colour deficiency.

Ok, so a solid set. Forza is a pretty good benchmark for HDR, if you feel it is too dim, but looks fine, it sounds like things are working correctly (HDR is designed for dark room viewing) increase the "brightness" option in game to bring it to more comfortable level and you will get the benefit of a 10bit output, even if you don't get a huge benefit elsewhere. Another good one to try is Crackdown 3, which also has a really solid HDR output that activates automatically.

There power is definitely there, the issue is that you can’t go into it half heartedly. Hundreds of people and thousands of hours of resource would need to go into it to ensure that even support was there for existing devices. Then you need to start drumming up ongoing support from developers, to keep software coming a a steady pace. The water has already been tested and I think as of now it would be hard to justify that investment, when all signs point towards it still being niche.

It’s not a 3D format for receivers, it’s for headphones. It’s an extension of the other HRTF tech used by Dolby Atmos for Headphones and Windows Sonic and Sony’s PsVR solutions , which were both designed for VR headsets. It simulates speakers or audio objects (that can move in real time) around the space around the user. The talk about it working with speakers was mainly them talking about the additional complications to extend do 3D processing for a room you need to know exactly where the user is sitting and calculate the effects of every wall, ceiling, object , material in the room around the user. Which you also need to measure. Using headphones removes that particular infinite array of variables that already sits on the variables of people’s own anatomy and brains

I guess on the PC you are just having to go over and above the raw speed of the console to get the comparable results, just like everything else. Cerny did mention that even those fast 7gb drives will not have the same custom configuration in terms of things like priority levels. The DirectX direct-storage API probably will be providing some of those console like storage optimisations to the PC space and presumably hardware that makes use of it will be coming at a later date too. It was only announced with the series X the other day, so we should hear about it in due course.

Thread Dolby Atmos dev talk about Sony 3D audio "Tempest Engine"
Yeah, Project Acoustic is a set of tools for rendering ray traced type audio (project triton) for gameengines (unreal and unity are supported). It may be that the Xbox Series X has hardware acceleration for this tool, they have talked about the SX having a newer audio block. DolbyAtmos for Headphones and Windows Sonic are 2 HRTF algorithms/processes to place audio in a 3D space for headphones. The Xbox One and PC‘s both have the hardware to deliver this currently. On Windows , Sonic currently allows 112 virtual speakers or dynamic moving objects simultaneously. On windows Dolby Atmos for headphones is 32 (not a hard limit of the format). This is normally used to create a bed of core audio - a 7.1.4.4 speaker setup of 16 virtual speakers, which you hear as if they were physically placed around you., with 16 moving objects or speakers left to fill in gaps or represent sound beyond a typical speaker setup. Cerny talked about the hardware of the chip (placing this filter on the audio is expensive) And that they had made their own algorithm for placing the audio in 3D space (all the HRTF stuff) What the Ps5 has a pimped up version of what Is available for Pc and Xbox One currently as PS5 supports “hundreds” of virtual objects or speakers.

You don't know that. Any more than I know they have a deal. The end. See those cases of publishers enacting DCMA on videos when it doesn't suit them. Are those youtube videos from AMD, or are they from a private individual? Do they show gameplay footage? It may be that for Xbox one games, the resolution is defined via the Xbox SDK and the game OS can actually override it. That is fundamentally what they did With 360 games , it will be easier with the Xbox One games as they seem to have planned for this since the start of last gen.

I don’t know anything definitely, but I’m fairly certain that there will be games that implemented their own solutions to things and they can’t be changed without manual intervention. These might be the ones with no resolution boost. Games using checkerboard rendering , or dynamic resolution with an upper cap. And because a game may have areas in it which stretch the machine when the resolution is increased, they would likely be manually vetting them anyway.

Probably just real life testing. They "released" some extra power to the Xbox One shortly after launch as the API's for the OS and Kinect improved and it wasn't needed so much. They talked about how the X is reporting back data about game engine behaviour (which they use to feed the AI's that drive the Fast Start) and to influence future changes. Once the machine is out in the real world and they get that "big data" view on running temperatures in various locations, they may choose to make changes like that, but it would likely only be very small. They made a very specific point talking about the CPU and how it's clock speed was fixed at that high level, to make it clear that delivering those top line numbers aren't being deployed as a marketing technique. "up to 3.8ghz" is not what they want to communicate. I presume they knew that Sony was going to be going for the "upto 3.5ghz"

I think it's an interesting approach to try and make that old content look closer to new, because actually once you get used to good HDR content, SDR content does look flat and dull by comparison, so if I can add a bit of sheen to help me forget about that then that's cool. Many TVs are doing this type of thing already, but it is so intense and processor heavy for them, that it's useless for games due to the amount of lag it introduces. There are obviously some interesting discussions to be had about artistic intent and revisting older content to make it look different and of course the old "fake hdr" thing of what exactly IS hdr and when is it not.

Thread All Xbox Games May Have HDR on Series X, Select XB1 Games to Get Resolution Enhancements Through BC (No Work Needed From Devs + Testing Unlocked FPS)
I've been speaking to them about it. It's super sophisticated and extends the work done by the Coalition on Gears 5. With Gears they trained an AI to look at SDR and HDR output frames of various games and understand what the difference in colour space transform was: So HDR became the ground truth and SDR was the image that was derived from that. The AI could see how HDR to SDR had and once it had been trained with enough data would actually be able to do the opposite. To take the SDR image and make it look like the same HDR image. Trained with enough data you can then take an SDR game and perform that same inverse tone mapping. They are working with an even more sophisticated setup than the software only approach of Gears 5. Now the advantage with doing it at a source level, is that it is possible to have access to the original 11bit or 16bit data including, rather than have to apply it as a post-process to an 8bit image - which doesn't contain enough data to avoid banding. Also because of it is happening at source, it is far faster and latency-free compared to doing it in other ways (or having a TV do it) The Solution for the Xbox Series X goes further and all of this happens on the display controller so there is 0 affect on memory and GPU performance , working in HDR normally has a minor hit on these things. Which is actually why the S is overlocked vs the XB1 OG.

It’s not really cowardly when they kept on making sequels to games that don’t really sell vey well. It has been like that since the Sands of Time , which was a major Bomba, despite being one of the best games of that generation. They made 2 sequels that generation also. They tried HD remasters and and 2 brand new games, they all bombed. I think they gave it a fair chance.

There is still a fairly sizeable difference in cost there, a 77inch OLED is a pricey bit of kit. The price scales so quickly along with the size, but the warranty does not and the likelyhood of burn in not not change. I would personally feel uncomfortable knowing that could happen to something so expensive. There is a significance in both peak brightness and an even bigger difference in full screen brightness. If he has ever been in the situation where the plasma wasn't bright enough, the OLED will be bettter , but the QLED will be outstanding - and the black level differences totally go out of the window in a room with lighting. And whilst people are correct in that there is no 8K content, at that screen size upscaling will function better a higher native resolution, so regular 1080i tv and non 4K movies may actually scale up there. Either way they are amazing sets and I don't think you would be wrong or dissapointed with either.

I didn’t read it like that, I read it moreso that they are given the financial backing of Sony to pay for expensive things (such as endless focus testing). i.e. it has a massive budget that nothing else is afforded. That massive budget allows for a style of AAA game to emerge that is simply impossible for anyone else. Not even EA, Activision or UBi.

They are fun games, as others have said , maybe see if you can do them co-op, they really shine when you play with someone else. I think it is worth keeping in the back of your mind that they might also slow the SSD speed down for bc mode or tie it to a “beta” boost mode only, perhaps limited to the sata interface of the Ps4 There may well be games that freak out if they load that fast - especially if Sony don’t perform per title testing. They’ve already set that scene by talking about how the Spider-man demo was was a custom build to take advantage of it. I’d expect big improvements, but I would pare back those expectations from “super speed”. But coming back to what the original comment was, I think it would be a shame if those are the only benefits we see. The 16xAf , improved AA and resolution increases that MS introduced with the Xbox One’s BC have set an expectation that things should look better too. I’ll be disappointed if they don’t do similar things for Xbox One games running on SX.

I really appreciate the effort that they went to with the graphic switching, but even when this was released a decade ago, I felt something was off. On too many occasions throughout the game the atmosphere, color palette or even the time of day is changed in a way that doesn’t add anything, I also feel that the art itself is totally at odds with the visual language of the Halo games. The forerunner and spaceship interiors don’t look like halo, they look like a different franchise entirely. Often I felt like I was playing a mod for another game or some attempt at a fan remake.

I’ve recently changed to a commercial position within the events industry (from a science/technology company) there is a whole backend that supports things like E3 and GDC and MWC. These trade shows , Expos and conferences are being cancelled all over the world. This in turn is making everything very uncertain, businesses who would be attending are apprehensive to attend or continue planning to attend for fear of losing huge sums of money should the event be cancelled or that the future the concern is great enough to reduce visitor attendance significantly. I’d literally put down a deposit for a new car, which I will be cancelling. So the knock on Effect continues :( In all fairness, the company has done the right thing but to spell out the things that could be coming our way (reduced working weeks, mandatory leave, redundancies) so at least people within the organisation who are in a worse financial position than I am can plan for hard times, should it come to it.

The point of a lower cost machine is to keep the latest and greatest a little more accessible for those “tier 2” countries and emerging economies , who are extremely unlikely to have a 4K requirement. I’m not mega familiar with the switch to be honest, I’m not sure what unique things games tend to use , but If I were to guess... There are less specifics to deal with overall thanks to messaging and parties and whatnot being bare bones, this Some of the games being designed / ported with mobile in mind which have touchscreens and gyros by default. Smaller porting houses a singular focus on porting to switch with staff who have a lot of love for the Nintendo hardware. A friend of mine worked for a dev back in the 360 days and I remember him telling me that his colleagues simply did not understand what achievements were and how games were using them, he had to fight really hard to get the game he was working on to have anything beyond finish level 1 , finish level 2 , complete the campaign on hard. Perhaps there is still an awareness component that prevents these things happening.

I’m not saying that the DS5 triggers aren’t gonna be cool, but experience tells me that we will see it in launch titles when it’s the new hotness, then it falls by the wayside as developers prioritise resources on more valuable things.

So you’ve now got multiple factors that can be changed on a frame by frame basis to keep a game running in a desired way, rather than it being fixed at runtime. It could be as simple as removing that cap put in place to prevent tearing and you have a game that runs at 70-80fps ish. The basic calculation for publishing games is Was game a big success? If yes, make sequel. If no, move on. Sunset overdrive was not a big success, which was why they couldn’t get a sequel greenlit by anyone. It’s not unfounded at all, it’s what big media congromorates do, it’s what Sony does. It’s why we get endless Adam Sandler films and we are currently on our 3rd Spider-Man Reboot, our 3rd Ghostbusters attempt etc etc. I don’t think that SCE falls so far outside of any corporate need to be successful that they simply do what they want as if they are simply benefactors to artists who are given free reign to make anything they please without any consideration for their shareholders. Of course there is a degree of portfolio maintenance that is going to happen when it makes sense to. It’s an excercise in risk mitigation to ensure there is a stream of revenue from successful IPs, in order to promote their platform. Your argument that I’m wrong because at some point in the future they might make something else is no more valid than the assumption that they are more likely to continue to work on sequels to existing franchises. This generation has possibly been the least prolific , creative and varied output from big publishers (Sony included). I’m not entirely sure what would need to change for that to turn on it’s head. Thread "Barely visible" gamma/brightness adjustments in games
Fundamentally it is to try and ensure that there is a seperation between something that is pure black and something that is not. However this perception changes upon your viewing environment. So when a game is asking you to set it , it's wanting to adjust the brightness so that no black data is lost for the viewer. If you have a calibrated display, then you may have a setup for a bright and dark room , as well as having black point set correctly, so that no clipping occurs/it isn't raised beyond where it should be to begin with. Obviously unlikely TVs and Movies, games offer the ability to change their output internally, in order to try and optimise themselves a little. Personally I find it easiest to turn it down to the lowest, then increase it until i first see it (which helps to prevent retinal retension from all the staring) Of course, incorrect display settings, dynamic settings and other bits and bobs that people have enable will interfere with this setup. It might seem right on the setup screen, but then be wrong in game. Of course, the game can have a bit of a funny setup too, it's not unique to HDR games, plenty of games handle this in an unorthodox fashion.

My understand is that when you get the “instant game response” that is when it is in the lower latency/slightly less accurate picture mode, rather than the game mode itself producing that. Each picture preset just offers a different set of parameters which the TV uses to control it’s output. Notice the cinema preset loses the motion interpolation options. Personally I’d just use the built in Netflix and YouTube apps. As they both offer better image quality and you can set the picture mode independently from your Tv

The issue is you have absolutely no idea of the cost to Sony to sell that many hardware units. The reality of it is they would have for sure sold significantly more had been lower in price, especially when it was up against the 360 which was already having price cuts, due to having been out for over a year by the time the PS3 had hit all markets. Of course, it’s a different scenario if both machines launch at a similar time and are of a similar price, but they are still going to be fighting for consumers mindshare with the early day console squabbles and fighting over the fickle , price sensitive markets such as the UK.

Exactly, it’s not the frame rate that it is the issue, it’s that you’ve taken something that looks like it doesn’t belong In real life and made it look more real. I remember when the BBC switched to HD broadcasting, the presenters complained that their makeup looked terrible. Basically it was and that little bit of extra Vaseline on the lens that the older cameras and the resolution provided simply hid it. Makeup artists started having to try harder and change the techniques they had been using for decades. To me it is interesting we chase “photorealism” but are still leaving behind fundamental components as what makes something look real or not by the wayside. 60fps not looking right or not looking natural is actually people saying they prefer things to look unnatural and wrong.

No. I think the only HFR features movies releases on disc are the 2 Ang Lee movies - Billy Lyn’s Long Halftime Walk which was 60fps for it’s home release (but 120FPS for theatres) And Gemini Man, which is the same. Famously they actually made the 2nd and 3rd movie in the Hobbit Trilogy (which was 48fps) “softer” Gemini man is a really interesting example of the challenges that Hollywood faces, the HFR is actually not as jarring as the Hobbit movies were, but the quality of the CG occasionally falls below the threshold of acceptability, something that perhaps might not show itself at 24fps. I find it fascinating how people perceive the soap opera/cinematic thing in video content. Because strangely what we are saying is that blurrier/less detail and more jerky is more “cinematic” and therefore somehow of better quality. It’s even stranger when we draw a line between gameplay and cutscenes having entirely different expectations. These are entirely learned cognitive association. And that’s not to make a jab at anybody who feels this way, we almost all do, due to our lifetime of training for content types.

It’s not a system they only engages when a console/game console configure themselves correctly. In the case of the LG sets, LG caused a bunch of problems by utilising a display mapper that crammed 4000nits of detail into 600nits displays. Enabling the HGIG setting just makes the TV behave as it should have since they launched them 4 years ago. If you are playing a game that supports the PS4’s HDR setup (which is based on the HGIG guidelines) , then all this serves to do is remove the HDR setup in game, configuring itself using the PS4’s internal configuration.

Nobodies favourite encounters were from dropships, they were from the meticulous placed and scripted enemy encounters. I think if you look at something like Destiny 2 or even Spider-Man or even Batman, 2 games that create an illusion of an open world game by having almost 2 layers of play. The hub world in which you can move around and then missions which load in and become much more tightly controlled linear experiences with super deliberate encounters. versus a “pure” open world game such as Just Cause, which gives you a simulated world and a bunch of toys to play with. I’m sure there is no reason why they can’t add the ability to change resolution to an arbitrary Ultra wise angle. I’m sure they could have with the Xbox should they have wanted. Whether devs will bother is another thing altogether as it’s another thing to need to optimise for , beyond the base resolution. I’d It’s a bit of an odd proposition with super niche appeal. If you have an ultra wide monitor now, you probably have a gaming PC If you have an Xbox, are you going to purchase an ultra wide monitor if few games support it?

I’d rather not have as big a Tv as I have, but unfortunately the modern specs are attached to larger screens. You can’t get reasonably priced and quality smaller HDR, high refresh rate displays. So if you are wanting the image quality to match your gaming PC, you are at a bit of a lose end but to buy a giant home display

Games that are HDR and games that are not have their own mode. Personally, for HDR games I leave it in the "game hdr" picture mode, where you can adjust the dynamic tone mapping setting to HGIG. The "game" presets whether HDR or standard have some additional burn in measures applied to them, so if that is a concern, then that will keep things working for longer.

Thread HDR games analysed
It is fairly typical of most TV's out of the box to bump up contrast and saturation in order to meet the expectations of what consumers prefer and to get the Wow factor in a retail or home environment. Funnily enough, when a TV is calibrated, some users actually walk away from a little disappointed that some of the "pop" which they are used to is now removed. For most TVs this is present in the SDR modes, but for the HDR content, there is actually less room to do make those types of adjustments beyond saturation. So some of what you are perceiving may actually be a product of your TV doing SDR a little bit more wrong than the HDR. Another common cause of these kinds of feelings are how HDR actually provides much greater room to create contrast through increasing peak brightmess, which means that shadow detail doesn't need to be crushed or clipped in the same way that it always has been in order to create a perception of contrast. Properly mastered HDR content often uses a greater range of blacks and near blacks. For many people who have become super accustomed to jet black darkness for anything even close to grey, suddenly everything looks less contrasty. I often read about these types of complaints from OLED owners, who are accustomed to this jet black , but don't have the upper brightness or overall APL to cause our eyes to react the same as they do for users with brighter displays. It's also why you will see people raving about Dolby Vision making the image preferable, as it creates an image that sits somewhere between HDR and SDR, sometimes giving that slightly more crushed black look which is a necessity of SDR.

Thread How likely is OLED burnin on newer screens?
wise words. A close friend of mine has burn in from the hud on rocket league on a 2 year old set (he can only see it on solid red screens) But you’ll find countless people saying their TV of the same model is perfect. It can happen just like it can happen on plasmas, despite people using anecdotal evidence to suggest it won’t happen. I think just having some acceptance it probably will is most sensible. Consider it the trade off for having another type of technology that will instead suffer from a different type of problem. If you know that you are going to rack up 1000’s of hours on any one game, then you are going to see something eventually. If you spread yourself evenly between several games or lots of different games, then you won’t see any issues for a much longer period. This is essentially what we saw with our burn in tests vs want RTINGS did. Neither of us did anything excessive stressful to the sets either (HDR!)

I’m quite happy with upto 4K as we have now, hopefully we will also have upto 8K for next gen. And upto 1080p like we had at he start of the gen and Up 720p the gen before. With 4K and even 8K displays (which are already affordable as premium items), upscaling is far less problematic than before. Especially with sparse rendering being commonplace and various frame buffers already being decoupled. I’d rather have devs have the choice to render the base image at 1080p and render post processing effects at 4K, than just render everything at 1080p just cos of people on the internet who can’t see beyond their own noses. As for 8K The widespread commerialisationof that technology sits much closer to the expected releases of next gen machines for Sony inparticular to talk about it as a real thing, so I don’t think the conversation will be about just 4K

I guess these are just well worn, tried and tested genres that have been a big part of RPG right back from when they were only board games. I guess the genre need for different abilities, races and environments fits a non-realistic world a bit better. It also contextualises basic stuff like weaponary and a variety of enemies to fight. Would a WW2 RPG offer the same variety of weapons for an RPG game to function vs a sci-fi game? Would a game set in a historical medieval world offer enough variants of accurate swords to be fun to play? Would the Witcher be the same if the only enemy were humans and there were no creatures, monsters or magic?

Basically the HGIG setting makes the display follow the HDR PQ EOTF curve exactly, until the display’s peak brightness, then it hard clips. So the picture is exactly as bright or dark as the source it is being given until it receives data above what it can actually display accurately. Think of it as disabling processing that interferes with the image. Otherwise it will assume 4000nit data all the time and perform a fixed roll off to fit that into the display’s 700nit peak output (DTM OFF)

Funny thing is that it’s basically a bug in rainbow 6 , as if you leave the game with vsync on, it actually caps the framerate at 30fps. I leave my console set at 1440p 120hz all the time for games like Siege, a game with a 4K flag automatically switches back to 60hz. It would be interesting to see the cap removed from some older games, I know of games that have enforced a 30fps as they are nervous of the framerate graphs that DF produce and the impact that will have on marketing.I don’t *think* the Xbox actually engages VRR when set to 120hz. It certainly didn’t when I had the Samsung (but that may have been that TV) and it’s bit harder to see on the LG, , but I should check again The best example I’ve seen from a game is COD MW, which does tear and drop frames on Xbox, but with VRR enabled you get perceptually flawless performance

I suspect the B/C6 users probably get a better deal here as their displays are not as bright as the data the game is asking for and they demand 4000nit data at all times, which the game offers by default. The patch that the C7 has changed this 4000nkt requirement didn’t it? The point about calibration (certainly for luminance) becomes somewhat void for HDR will many of the LG sets as they have undefeatable (and with good reason) global and local contrast enhancement and tone mapping.

It definately improves as you play through the game (or maybe they patched it in one of the 15-odd patches it had over the launch period) Overall it's quite a complex matter, you have 2 or 3 different tone mappers that need to be written and they themselves need to be extensively tested on standardised HDR displays. Not only do you need the hardware, but you also need the internal expertise from a programming side and an artist side. It wasn't so bad when you were just dealing with 8bit SDR gamma space LCD displays.

Thread Games with terrible HDR implementation?
I mean they get a better deal for god of war, which is fixed at 4000nits and the game is categorically too bright, but the 16sets are no way near bright enough to do what it is asking. C7 has a peak brightness on a 10% window of 700ish nits. By the time 50% of the screen is requesting HDR code values, the display is only able to supply 290nits to it. So the display has to constantly make decisions about what the relative brightness on screen is to the pixels distributed. So if the skybox is asking for 1000nits and the display isn’t showing this at its maximum capability of 290nits, then an explosion happens on the lower half of the screen requesting 4000nits, the display would have to drop back the skybox brightness so 150nits for example, increase contrast as then display said explosion at 300nits. However it can’t do this on a frame by frame basis, so what the displays typically do is to dial back the overall brightness across the board, so when incoming high code value brightness data is supplied, there is enough juice left to deliver an increase. The problem with video games is that they do not supply metadata which tells the display what content they are going to expect, the 16 series sets are not as bright to begin with and they will hold back more because they treat all videogames with no metadata as content that might achieve 4000nits. The newer models had patches for game mode that lowered this threshold.

With the white bar, the left most value is maximum, whereas it is the other way round on the black bar. With Destiny one of the things you do have to appreciate is that Bungie deliberately crush blacks on occasions in order to let enemies that can emerge out of nothing, the sunless cell strike is a good example of this. You do also see it in cave areas in the game where the caves are almost pitch black and they use patches of light to guide the player out.

There are a few caves and missions where something has gone a bit wrong. It’s almost like they use a negative light to remove light from an area and it doesn’t behave correctly in the HDR version of the game .You can’t change that from the sliders unfortunately It’s a good example of how game art does need to be built for an HDR output and it might explain why it took several months for the HDR update to come if there were various assets that needed to be updated.

the Halo Rings are a gift for environments, they allow you to go from green valleys, to snow mountain ranges to deserts to oceans to jungles all with a reason to do so. I guess with later games and their focus on a continuation of a narrative or a telling of a story per-halo rings , there has been a narrative and gameplay need to not be there. Whilst there is part of me that thinks an open world game where you can travel the entirety of the Halo Ring in a circular fashion, I think I would miss those carefully controlled vistas that the linear mission areas allow for. Destiny is very interesting as it shares so much in halo, you can see how Bungie blended those small open world planets with very linear missions.

360 games access the Xbox One Hardare via an emulation layer. Xbox One games work in the same way via virtulisation. Neither type of game directly accesses hardware, rather they speak to one of the 3 OS’s the machine has and that accesses hardware on their behalf (this is how the Xbox one X can run Xbox One games, despite having an entirely different memory architecture) For the sake of ease you can think of these as the same thing. The Heutchy method increases the resolution by having the OS which talks to the GPU ignore the request from the game for the specific resolution and instead uses one 3x that request. I have 0 doubt could be applied to Xbox One games on XSX with the same testing procedure they went through with 360 games.

HGIG basically insures that the display only shows what the display can physically display, the game engine can then correctly account for this in terms of how it handles bright detail. (There is nothing to stop the game doing what the TV is doing) HGIG is 1:1 with the input and output. DTM tried to guess what is important isn’t he image, this may mean to recover detail in highlights, but this may be that it also tries to artificially raise blacks as the algorithm thinks that is “too dark”, if it doesboth of these things simultaneously , then you actually can lose dynamic range and cause screen brightness limiting to engage more often. Basically the same rules that govern TVs still apply to HDR, we don’t want artificial enhancements applied to the image , as it takes us further from the “original” image. you might prefer it, but the image is objectively further away from the intention.

Thread UK retailer GAME likely to close 40 stores amid 'challenging retail market'
for me the retail experience for this kind of thing isn’t convinient. I don’t want to to take the time to go to the town centre on launch day Pay £3 for parking Take the game home and spend a minimum of 45 minutes installing an downloading patches. This is why I don’t buy physical anymore, even if I can buy a game online and save £6 , the experience of disc based games is poor. I often end up spending more/the same on a digital preorder, because of the time saving. And for everything else, I literally own all the games I could possibly want or have access to them via game pass, PS+ or Gwg, so even the experience of browsing is non existent. This isn’t game’s fault, this is just the world we live in. They have diversified in many locations, by opening e-sports cafes and expanding more and more into mechanise, but I would imagine fo many of the stores listed, the locations aren’t conducive to doing this. The store that has closed in the town I live in (Northampton) has got another store there too.

exactly and the reality is they can not afford to sell the games at the price you describe.Capitalism at it’s finest. Game did the same to all of the indies in early 2000’s when they started competing with supermarkets and selling £40 games for £25 at launch, who were paying closer to £30 at cost for games. It’s why we are heading for service models for games, as consumers simply want as much as they can get for as little as possible.

yeah let’s hope so. the business rates, rent and wages are going to be killers how many games do you think they need to sell in a day just to keep the bills paid? Especially in somewhere like the chapelfield centre on Norwich, the rent is going to be thousands , if not 10’s of thousands per month. and there is a 2nd store just 5-10 minutes walk from that.

I think it has little to do with what GAME has/hasn’t done and a lot to do so with changes in consumer buying patterns. The same thing is happening all over the world with games retail and lots of retailers on the whole

Enable HGIG set the PS4, you should only ever need to do this the once. For most games which offer HDR peak brightness calibration it will settle on 700-800nits (same as PS4) which is exactly what you want ^ games that have a “Make the white disappear” DMC5 is one like this for older games or games Without this type of option, you may want to switch to “dynamic tone mapping” to off. But those games are increasingly uncommon. The ones off the top of my head like this are god of War and Horizon. HGIG enabled is right for 99% of games

Pretty much. I recently finished off some of the DLC thanks to Xbox BC and it's a really great looking game even there in a a lower resolution. The biggest "issue" is that most of the texturess and things like normal maps are pretty low res. Otherwise, the artstyle of all of the characters looking like they are part of a wood block print still looks very convincing.

Thread Do anyone think PS5 will have backward compatibility with the Playstation portable games?
They always did really great, but I don't think that in 2020 having BC with disc only really cuts the mustard and because of that need and want from consumers to be able to purchase long lost game, this introduces all of the legal issues that MS have spoken about. Whilst of course there is an argument to say just make it availble for disc onlu, I think you would actually cause PR problems with people can't actually get hold of games they want to play. And even then, the testing required to understand the compatibility and reliability for 4 generations of titles, with games often having multi print runs, often including code changes and games having physically different code and performance across PAL/NTSC regions creates a mind boggling amount of work to be done. That's before you even consider that almost all of the european region's games are hard coded for 50hz only for Ps1/PS2 , which then means you've got to deal with running 50hz video on the 60hz machine on a 60hz display, which then has quality implications and engineering implications for the rest of the PS5. in short, providing BC is no simple task, even for a big company like Sony.

Thread PS5 and Xbox Series speculation launch thread |OT9| - For flops sake!
There are no patches to the original code, so 3rd parties don’t have to do anything. It’s magical in that the emulator can make the resolution and vsync and AF can all be switched on and the games have access to more CPU/GPU. Whether or not the game works when they enable these things is another question. Which is why every game is rigorously tested and profiled ensure it functions exactly as it should - by Microsoft. So in simplified terms each game has it’s own configuration file. As they were developing the emulator and testing games, they were making efficiency changes and fixes for specific games , that no doubt had effects in other places too. With the exception of a couple of games which had a “patch” or were using a different executable in order to facilitate the playing of multi game discs, it was all done by Microsoft

Now this may not be the case, but It sounds as if you were being citical AND need to use swear words to emphasize things, perhaps seems like exactly the type of behavior that isn't really welcomed by anyone. Thread Is anyone buying a new TV for the PS5/XSX because of HDMI 2.1 and VRR
It eliminates screen tearing, but also allows for more responsive input than when VSYNC is enabled. It also means games can run at arbitrary framerates that aren't 15/30/60 FPS The game could target 52fps should the developers choose, which of course is beneficial for games that fall short of those arbitrary numbers we are used to speaking about.

Thread Is anyone buying a new TV for the PS5/XSX because of HDMI 2.1 and VRR
It supports higher bandwidth data transmission and this means that HDMI can support high framerates at the same time as higher resolutions. One of the big things is that the HDMI 2.1 format natively supports variable refresh rate (the generic non branded term for freesync, which is based on the same standards)

it’s because there is more wastage on a smaller panel and it fundamentally costs the same as a larger panel to make 65inch is the optimal size for Their process, which is why it’s priced so competitively Vs the 55inch and sees larger discounts. It’s also why the bigger panels are crazy expensive. an example image of how the manufacturing has changed over time This will continue and no doubt it is why they have chosen to not release a budget BX version of the 48inch model I wonder if it might have a knock on effect of making the range ever so slightly more expensive too as they slot it in

Cable companies will have to pay for testing and certification and this will limit the production of budget cables no doubt. As full bandwidth 2.1 is going to be limited to only a handful of displays this year and useage cases (premium consoles), I’d also expect manufacturers to take advantage of that enthusiast status too.

yeah it’s basically what the HGIG setting does on the LG, however it’s fixed at the display peak. Disabling any display mapping or roll off that may occur. All of Xbox’s big franchises are 60fps already, or have 60fps modes. They’ve been prepping for a number of years. The CPUs are hugely improved so should make that even easier and more commonplace too. Of course , that’s not to say that there won’t be 30fps or worse games this generation, but VRR being so commonplace means that framerate caps and performance modes can be less/more common too.

I suppose that the oleds themselves will be able to run slightly cooler as they will produce more light to start with, but whether they don't stress the sets as much or whether they choose to improve the image quality is another thing. The other part of the equation is how they are manufactured. I don't know what performance limits are placed upon the displays that are made with manufacturing techniques designed to reduced cost. It might be that inkjet based manufacturing (which is what Samsung are going to use for QD) have other thresholds for heat which they will try to avoid.

Even so, I would be more concerned generally that the budget model has a variant of a 2016 processor and 33% less ram than the C9 and E9. What could this mean for performance and updates in the mid term? and why are you paying 2019 prices for a 2016 display with a 2016 processor running 2019 software. It might not amount to anything, but it might amount to an app you use being discontinued sooner than the C/E or having other limitations when running certain types of content. Thread HDR and backlight level(brightness level)
This will be down couple of things. A: Your set isn’t calibrated, so colours will likely be different between picture modes. B: God of War’s internal conversion isn’t very good and the colours and contrast are all wonky in HDR anyway God of War is not a good one to use as any kind of example, because of its various issues. A number of games are able to use some of the new colour technology as part of their rendering pipeline, but for the most part the actual textures and effects are not made with WCG in mind, so the improvement is limited. Many of the new colours don’t actually exist in the real world, so from an art perspective, the places where they will be most “obvious” are going to be in games that are more Fantasy or Sci Fi Gran Turismo Sport , is a game that features a lot of wide colour content and assets in the game . I reccomend taking a look at the scapes mode where the background art has been photographed in a larger colour space than normal photos.
