You are confusing Eurobonds with the new idea of Corona-Bonds. Right now every EU country can access the and get funds from the ) as well. The ECB has overwritten its deficits critera due to the crisis which means that every EU country can get those cheap funds - no matter their financial status - and also that there won't be "men in black" as you call it. Also note that all EU countries are liable together for these funds. It is basically what the Eurobonds idea from 10 years ago wanted to be. But you are talking about the new concept of "Corona-Bonds". The countries are arguing about the way how to fund these bonds. Basically one side wants to access funds without the liability of having to pay them back while the other side wants to have financial regulations when they have to share (or pay off) the debt from others. Also the "richer" countries would have to pay higher interests for their own loans on top of that. But it's mostly about the disagreement of whether or not there should be a basic liability if you take a loan. tl;dr: the main difference between Eurobonds and Corona-Bonds (right now) is that you have to pay back the first one someday while you could #yolo the other one.

There was a rule in place for few days which stated that all deals with medical equipment made in Germany needed to get approved by an authority before it got sold to other countries. While it's not the nicest thing to do it is still pretty far off from your "stealing supplies from other countries for weeks" claim.

Bought a cheap bench with a barbell, 2 dumbells and around 90 kg (~200lbs) weight plates exactly two weeks ago (still waiting for 2x15kg/35lbs plates tho). I guess a lot of people realized (including myself) that you're kinda fucked if your Gym closes and you got no weights or gear at home for basic exercises. It seems that the price for all weights have almost trippled but for some reason the bench press (or a cheap pull up racked I looked at) seem to go for the same unchanged price.

It's not about loyality or anything, it's about the right thing to do. If your roomate was already tested then you might have it as well already due to the long incubation time. It doesn't matter if you or your mate would move out because both decisions would most likely only spread the virus if both of you are infected.

There's nothing wrong with wearing a mask if you're already sick or feel like you might be. Hoarding the masks for no real reason so health workers have none is stupid tho. The one argument for wearing a mask when you're healthy is the placebo effect which makes you more aware of the situation and causing you to (potentially) touch your face less. But wearing a mask (while you're healthy) on the other hand does actually increase your chances of getting sick. Calling it a "government narrative" sounds tinfoil hat'ish.

Cables and Switches can be the limiting factor but usually it's more about something called Peering Points (aka "uplink"). Imagine this as a smart Switch which ties several smaller networks together so they can exchance information which each other. Now there are large global Peering Points with a capacity of several terabytes bandwith that are still under-worked right now. But there are also smaller uplinks for example you have one somewhere in your road which sends your data to a larger one somewhere in your district or city. These smaller ones aren't build to handle the current traffic and might cause a bottleneck. All of those smart switches use a software we'll call "routing tables" for now and they need to consantly look up those tables for every bit you send / receive to understand which other network they have send that data to. If there's too much data a the same time then those machines can start to lag like if you just openend chrome with 5 million active tabs. Reducing the traffic equals reducing the chrome tabs. If it's lagging then you have to reduce the most demanding tabs / traffic for now. tl;dr: the global internet can be fine and have vast amounts of free bandwith - but the data might not reach your endpoint and vice-versa if there's a bottleneck.

We are talking about multiplayer games. Obviously you can manually modify your singleplayer game files without having to relying on the Steam Workshop. And I'm pretty sure that more than 90% of the multiplayer games on Steam use the Workshop for their mods. SP games have probably just a slightly lower share.

Avorion has around 20.000 mods on the Workshop, Empyrion has around 100.000 mods on the Workshop. Also both teams are really nice when you work with them. Kinda expected you to cite Minecraft as your example of a Steam MP game that doesn't use the Steam Workshop for its modding tbh.

Thread Borderlands 3 coming to Steam March 13th
There's a significant difference between SP / MP when you're talking about mods. If you want to join a modded MP game then 3 parties need to have the exact same mods and versions: you, the other players, the server instance. Steam Workshop is checking if you have all required mods installed and will download missing mods, update mods if any instance has a higher version, provides parity checks and automatically downloads dependencies for mods and provides full mod packages. There's a reason why pretty much every MP game on Steam that provdes modding also uses the Steam Workshop because otherwise it would technically not be manageable for most games and users and become a disaster. Multiplayer and modding is more than just "many singleplayer games combined".

Some PC games are not compatible to each other depending on the store where you bought it. For example ARK Survival Evolved from the Microsoft Store and Steam are not compatible to each other because the Steam version supports mods while the MS version doesn't. There can technically exist "weaker" versions of a game when you bought it from a "weaker" store with less functionality. Same might apply to EGS games like Satisfactory once they release on Steam with modding.

Nah. There are 6 new heroes that got introduced to Dota since 2017 (well, technically they are the first 6 new heros that got added to the pool since 2005 or something). Most of the Dota players prefer to have a good balance and just 1 or 2 new heroes a year instead of the constant new OP champion spam that happens in League with ~7 releases a year. If you look at at the Dota pro scene then you'll see that usually around 95% of the hero pool is either getting picked or banned during tournaments because every hero has its place. Because in unranked mode people usually don't care what you do and it is kinda impossible that you meet smurfs in unranked mode because there is literally not a single reason for them to create a new account to play in an un-ranked game. But it happens kinda often that a pre-made duo joins the ranked mode with one of the two players having only played the game for maybe 3 or 5 hours or something. If that new player decides to play an important position then you know that you'll definately lose the game, lose MMR (rank) and lose 30 or 60 minutes of your lifetime because somebody else made a selfish and kinda stupid decision. Finished the adventure mode yesterday and this game is definately the best gamified Sport or exercise experience developed until now. It keeps you engaged during the whole story mode and you keep unlocking new gameplay mechanics and items until the very end. If anyone is looking for a game or motivation to exercise then this one is probably recommendable to everyone. If you're just looking to play some RPG game but don't care about fitness then you might skip it. There are very few negative aspects of the game like the way how your exercise time is getting tracked, which is way too low and therefore causing your calorie counter to be too low as well or that you have to put on the strap / ring even if you only want to get your multitask bonus. And mountain climber exercises in general. Otherwise this game is probably my GOTY 2019.

Those are only the basic items. Before the changes you had different ways of getting a special item of your choice: buy keys to open chests, buy the item from the Steam Market, have it gifted to you, trade with others. Now your options are: buy credits for $4,99 or $9,99 or $24,99 or $49,99. Also there is no way to earn a single credit without spending real money. Oh, and also of course you aren't able to sell, gift or trade your item later on for anything else. All that happened was a removal of choices and now you're forced to spend money (exclusively) in the Rocket League store if you want anything. And the prices are mostly stupid. Is there a single item that didn't become way more expensive? I know that they halfed pretty much all prices after the community outcries, some prices went even down by 70%-80%, but it seems like everything still cost way more now.

A forecast is based on a) the budget you're planning with and b) your defined goal. You can't create a forecast without planning your budget or goals. If you drastically change one of the two parameters mid-year but still compare your result to the original forecast: that factor becomes pretty much useless. But anyway, again, let's not derail this.

... sigh. "60% higher than their initial forecast" is a statement that you should not base a discussion on about whether the strategy was successful or not. Their initial forecast was made with the plan of buying only few exclusives, handing out around 15 free games and having no deep sales or discounts. If you change your strategy mid year and increase your budget by a lot - you should really expect to outmatch your original forecast, don't you think?

Epic should add a cheap PR spin like "revenue is 60% more than our initial forecast" so people will immediately think those numbers must be great then. Some posters will absolutely ignore the fact that their initial forecast was based on their initial store strategy. A strategy which included having no discounts, no coupon codes, no deep sales, going for only a handfull of exclusives and handing out around 15 free games to kickstart the store. Once the EGS is running fine on its own with that initial strategy, like in april or may 2019, they will stop throwing money into the EGS and still reach their intial forecast. WOW! Thread If games are going to be 4K60fps then "next-gen" is just a continuation of this gen, with a hardware refresh.
Setting up the code for a real-time rendered game, real-time rendered video or pre-rendered video are 3 totally different things. I guess we all know what pre-rendering is. What's the difference between real-time rendering for a game or a video to show off graphics? Take a look at something called "Demoscene". This here is also real-time graphic, not pre-rendered and only 64kb in size (including the sound btw): Or this clip which is almost 15 years old, real-time, 177kb in size and runs on GeForce 7000 series: You can't go the route of "oh we have these and these TF numbers, and with amount X TF we can achieve such a storm video, so we should have games with the same graphic fidelity because we have 2 times the TF that were required for that video!". It doesn't work that way. You can achieve high fidelity graphics for videos by relying on algorithm, vectors, procedural generations, fancy stuff like that. It does look good, but it's often not feasible to transfer those techniques into a game.

Thread What do you want from next-gen games?
It's either too much or you basically want to play an interactive movie that's probably controlled by QTEs only. I don't think there's another way to control something like that in your clip. We had QTE only games like Road Avanger since the 90s but having such a game loop in a AAA game would be a huge step back in terms of gameplay. A new gen won't give you some kind of magic omnipotent power to control games in a completely new way. The tech progress that's usually the easiest to spot for players are frames per second, resultions and "shininess" of textures in games (there's a reason why most launch titles are shiny af). Other features are often harder to spot like the iInheritance tech in Shadow of Mordor when you were climbing those ranks within the orcs. That was pretty impressive from a technical point of view, but not so much if you just played the game.

Thing is that it's not about "like two specific contexts" because the Iron Cross is the symbol of germany, even from a time before germany existed. Basically the symbol of the german state is the "Bundesadler" (german eagle) and the symbol of the german / prussian idea is the Iron Cross (with "germania" beeing the symbol of the german people). It's featured in some historic and modern buildings like the Brandenburg Gate, public agencies and civil services:Saying that everything related to the Iron Cross must be Nazi stuff is simply wrong. But the amount of buyers that bought it on release-day without a discount is much lower than with a normal release. People that already waited for the Steam release can also wait for high discounts. Playstation is using (and has extended) the server farms which were built and used from Gaikai. So they basically have their own network where they provide the required resources on-demand for the sole purpose of powering the Playstation services. On the other hand we have Microsoft that relies on its Azure cloud where you have constant global overcapacities (not because they have problems selling their resources but because the cloud is simply that big). It's easier to keep niche services running if you have "free" or "un-used" capacities within your network. Other companies have different variations of network architectures like Valve that relies on renting capacities from 3rd party datacenters or Acti-Blizz that has a mix of own server farms and something called "colocation".

Server cost (ie. barebones or "cloud") aren't the big obstacle in such cases and it's usually more about support demand and personal costs. PSN is also basically the company called "Gakai" and they are usually only providing enogh "server ressources" to meet the demand of Playstation users. Microsoft on the other hand has the "Azure" network and is usually looking to fill its excess capacities with additional offerings. Those Azure capacities are available anyway so it's better to use them for stuff like older multiplayer games instead of not utilizing them at all because those ressources got paid for already.

Late 90s internet is still the best internet (mostly due to the technical treshold to get online). It also wasn't worth it to spend additional time for trolling or flaming when you have to pay for each minute you're online.

I'd say yeah: I'm hitting the gym 3 days a week (mostly weight lifting) in my 30s and Ring Fit is a really nice addition to that training. The game also has enough content that easily lasts 3 months if you play on a daily basis until you finished 100%. Probably much longer. Chances are that you're going to keep playing this game because you simply want to, not because you have to.

Ideally you want to have a high intensity, means many exercises in a short period of time. It's better to give it all and last maybe 20, 40 or 60 minutes than playing the game in some kind of lazy mode for hours with long breaks. You lose most weight in the kitchen but this game can easily help you to lose some more weight, get you in shape, work on your mobility and tone your muscles. The big muscle growths will happen during your weight lifting in the gym (where you should also always do some cardio and stretching btw).

You can compare your stats online for every exercise with other people in your same age group (dunno if you need NSO for that). Playtime wise I'm in the top ~10% of all other players within my age group and I'm even in the global top10 with some exercises while with other exercises I barely reach the upper half of all players in my group. It's pretty nice to see how people are focusing on different moves.

Thread Nintendo begins trial to defend their "right" to deny pre-order refunds, German and Norwegian government accuse of violating EU consumer law
This defense only works within the EU laws if Nintendo explicitly states that you as a customer will abdictate your rights of cancellation once you activly use the that you've paid for. You also have to click some kind of checkbox or button and just having that statement written somewhere is not enough. The customer needs to activly consent before using the . I would argue that people pre-order a game because they want to play that game. That makes "playing the game" the service you're paying for while "downloading the game" is just a necessity to access the service of the product. Nobody will pay a fee just to download random files that they can't use or that don't work. It becomes evevn worse if you can't download your pre-order yet because Nintendo can't argue that the download is supposed to be a part of the pre-paid service. TL;DR: Nintendo is toast.

Best gamified exercise that was created until now. I guess the main difference between RingFit Adventure and other exercise games is that you play this one because you want to and not because you have to. Its probably also the only exercise game that can actually reach high intensity levels, if you want to, cause it's using a real piece of sport equipment - the Pilates ring. You can hit the gym 4 times a week and still get trashed by the game on the highest difficulty levels. But you can also be a couch potato and play it like a boss. And you can scratch like a DJ in the home screen by smacking and pushing the RingCon in different positions. Game is full of neat elements like that.

Difficulty range goes from 1 to 30. In the beginning the game asks you for your age, how much you exercise compared to others in that age group and how intensive you want your training to be. Then it will calculate a matching difficulty for you but you can re-calibrate or change it manually any time. Most obvious change is the amount of reps you have to do, but there are several smaller changes as well like the duration that you have to hold poses (like sitting low with squats). You notice the intensity difference between lvl20 or lvl25.

Levels / worlds vary in sizes a lot so you shouldn't take that as a reference. You can use the burnt calorie counter oder ingame timer as a goal for your sessions even tho these numbers are usually very low estimations but they still work as a point of reference. I guess the only recommendation for the game is to not cheat the game (like just moving the ring instead of doing the real exercise) and don't cheat yourself (going with a difficulty level that is too easy / avoiding specific exercises). I'd say that having a difficulty level that is a tad too high is probably better than if the game is too easy. There's no need to rush the game or to progress as quickly as possible. Also we know that the game is much (much!) longer than we expected.

The game asks you sometimes on startup how your sleep was, how you feel, if anything is sore and might recommend you to skip training. Because of liability. Overclocking your monitor does always hurt the hardware to some degree. But we're talking about something like your screen has a lifespan of exactly 10 years and overclocked its lifespan shrinks down to 9 or 9 1/2 years. Also the additional Hz that you can get by overclocking does highly depend on the individual monitor. Within the same model series some screens could reach for example 168 Hz and others might only reach 163 Hz due to slight differences within the used hardware for each product. Overclocking in general is mostly usefull in the range of 60 Hz - 90 Hz. Above that? Nah.

Thread If something sells well, why should I discount it?
That's not an outlier, its just a different variation of the same old tactic. In this case you force the market to keep the prices of your products high (creating additional "fictional value" by doing so) which causes that people will tend to wait for the few special sales like black friday, easter and holiday sales. During these sales Nintendo will get an immense boost in sold unites. They are basically creating artificially imposed shortfalls which will be covered during these peak sale periods. Nintendo could easily offer regular discounts and that would give a small boost to their average sales but they would also lose their biggest sale potential during those special sales. Nintendo isn't a better company or in a better position than others, it just comes with additional fictional value created by a marketing strategy. Also simply throwing a "20% OFF!" badge onto your product during a special sale is often much cheaper than paying for regular marketing.

Been playing several days now on difficulty 26 and I think the game is absolutely awesome. But I have 2 complains and I hope Nintendo might fix that somehow: a) you should be able to either rotate the camera view or rotate the trainer (is he also called flexi in the international version?). I think seeing the exercise from different angles might help some people to get a better form and to correct themselfes if they - for example - don't bend over far enough. Also the trainer and your in-game character have sometimes slightly different postures. b) the calorie counter is almost useless. It's nice to see that number growing but it isn''t really based on reality. I guess the real calorie consumption is probably 3 times as high as the game tells you. I'm aware that - for example with squats - it only counts the calories burned within your legs and ignores that you have an upper body and afterburn effects during breaks. You basically stop existing once your're in the menu, pressing smoothies or stop moving. But still: seeing 200 calories while the reality is more in the 500-700 calorie range feels too low.

Because you can either do your (lets say) 25 Squats in a quick manner that might push you to your limit or take your time and maybe even take a minute break after the first 15 squats and then finish last 10. I don't think that there's any kind of punishment if you take your time or if you go in hard. The game is easily a good addition to your exercise and can even replace some full cardio sessions. Strength wise it won't do much if you're already lifting.

Dunno if he's really that vague. He's referring to a behaviour that is pretty unique to new conversational style and he uses some examples. This kind of conversation style is pretty unique to the modern SocialMedia linguistics. And SocialMedia on its own (and especially new arising platforms) are predominantly used by younger people and thats probably the reason why he sees a potential danger there. It's not like that generation is worse than the generation before. Having full and constant access to SocialMedia simply causes a different behaviour.

There are some PC exclusive games that dwarf all console games like League, Dota2, CSGO, WoW, Sims. And then there are other games where 50%+ of the player base is on PC like PUBG, Destiny2, R6S, Minecraft. I mean ... League alone has probably more players than the total of all the console sales combined (last numbers: 2017 with 100 active million players). And there are other asian PC games that are even bigger than League. That was because the PS3 was "Cell" CPU based and emulating that with normal "PC servers" isn't worth it cost/performance wise. Literally stacking PS3s on top of each other was easier and cheaper. PS4 is x86 (aka "PC") CPU based and therefore runs on normal server hardware. It's much easier to use virtualization and like 1 TB of RAM instead of stacking PS4s that only have 8 GB.

Quick! Someone tell Sony that PS Now is only a streaming service and you don't actually play that game on PC because some Era user said so. Better tag Google as well so they know that they aren't working on a platform and buying exclusives for Stadia is dumb because Stadia isn't a thing. People have really a broken understanding of platform exclusivity or the word "exclusivity" on its own. Like Bloodborne is a PlayStation exclusive game, but not a PS4 exclusive game because PS Now is a part of the PlayStation eco system. It's not that complicated. Same like BOTW: it's not exclusive to the Switch because it also exists on the WiiU - but it's a Nintendo exclusive.

But ESL is reminding their employees to not use the companies official SocialMedia accounts for posting their personal political opinions but to use their personal accounts instead.I'd say its a pretty big difference if something gets framed as "warns staff not to discuss hong kong protests" or "remember to not use the companies SocialMedia accounts to discuss the hong kong protests but use your private accounts instead". A lot of people have access to all the social media channels within the ESL and reminding your staff to use these accounts only for company related stuff doesn't seem to be such a big deal. Thread CEO of world’s largest e-sports firm ESL warns staff not to discuss Hong Kong protests
Yeah it is clearly worded. ESL Employees = Employees. ESL Team members = Employees + Staff. Simple as that. "Members of teams of the ESL" does absolutely NOT refer to players of esport teams. I have no idea how you can get such a take. Nobody on earth refers to esport organisations as "teams of the ESL" within or outside of tournaments. ESL Teams are Production Team, SocialMedia Team, Marketing Team, Event Team, IT Team and so on. Thought that was kinda obvious to be honest. Your perception would only work if the ESL actually owns all those esport teams but they don't own any. Esport organisations in general don't belong to any esport association, only exception are somewhat the Overwatch League teams. I still don't get the idea why you left out the most important part of the statement, but I guess there's some kind of misunderstanding. Telling your employees to not use the SocialMedia accounts of the company for private political postings still doesn't seem like a big deal.

Dota has a lot more active items than League and while you have 2 additional spells in LoL (I mean ... does the TP scroll in Dota count as a spell?) you can actually play in Dota with a 10 slotted hero, while League still maxes out at 6. I mean LoL doesn't have the whole deny-stuff, be it creeps, teammate denies or self-denies. It doesn't have a turn radius for heroes at all, it doesn't have different reaction speeds for heroes, no animation-attack-walk-canceling stuff. No highgrounds, no line visions within the jungle and the possibility to kite specific angles in the jungle, you don't really queue your items and skill executions in League while Dota is pretty much queued all the way. League only has Macro management afaik but no Micro. And that's just stuff that comes off the top of my head. Thats why a BL3 has only 6 months of exclusivity (a game where the Steam release date got also announced ahead of the launch btw). It is literally the exact same case this time like with all those other EGS exclusive deals just that we're talking about 1 month bought exclusivity (or more precise "non-steam time") instead of 6 months or the usual 12 months. You are asking (rhetorical?) questions that got all answered in other use cases. Also arguing that "Borderlands 3 just had a huge launch on EGS" is another hot-take from another thread.

The question wasn't whether or not this would hurt Steam. The question was whether or not Epic paid again for a delayed release. Also please stop quoting that tweet. He had also some follow up tweets onto that which he already deleted because they were false. This original one is also incorrect because a) the Steam margin would be 80% and not 70%, b) Stadia and GMG also take 30% (so 30% must be some kind of Schroedingers-Cut, good and bad at the same time) and c) probably the moneybag stuff. This whole theory, that Steam gets a month delay for revenue or margin reasons, only works if you ignore that the game gets also released on Stadia, GreenManGaming, HumbleStore and GameStop. Don't ignore that.

That's nonsense. If this decision was about the sales revenue then of course the game would get released day1 on Steam as well because you get the highest overall revenue there. If this decision was about margins / cuts then the game would not release on GreenManGaming and Stadia (both take the exact same cut like Steam) or the HumbleStore (25%) or GameStop (no idea). There is not a single valid line of reasoning to explain this situation without the common Epic tactic to moneyhat and delay a Steam release because that's what literally already happened with other titles.

I was just wondering why he would use Activision as an example why big publishers will not release on 3rd party stores but only on their own platform + EGS instead while its simply factually incorrect because Activision still release on 3rd party stores like Steam. The other example (EA) is also kinda ... not fitting because they left 3rd party stores way before the EGS was a thing. Edit: seems like the original Tweet got deleted

Dota is marked as "controversal" because it kinda succeeded Warcraft 3. But not as WC4 but as the sequel genre to WC3. Also assets are more than just graphic models or sprites. If you copy / re-use a complete world then that world is also an asset. I think that would only work if you have a game that you can control by only using your voice. If you already need to use the controller to play a game, then why would you say something like "Open the map" when you could also simply press the button on the controller that you're already holding in your hands. People are lazy and saying a sentence is more "exhausting" than pressing the button next to the one you've already pressed. Like when the Handsome Collection was on sale for PC everywhere for like $2 and everyone bought it? The thing is: the whole sales statement is incredibly vague on many levels. We don't even know if they counted actual EGS sales or the guaranteed sales by Epic. It would make sense to count the guaranteed - but not actual - sales because 2K refers to their numbers as sell-in (which indicates that the copies didn't get sold to customers) and it would also explain the high amount of 70% digital sales. The user asked for another possible window and yeah, there were additional windows for possible selling records even after the first release. Most games are heavily frontloaded when it comes to sales. So having a strong start is often the most important thing. From my perspective Influencers are the most effective tool right now to get some kind of visibility, awareness and good word of mouth starting for your game. Influencers get cash (via their agency or the bountyboard) and the game gets views. Once those bounties stop (like BL3 atm) those streamers will unfortunately also stop pretty soon with streaming your game and switch to the next paid one. Would you count something like Sea of Thieves as non-competitive multiplayer based?

Wouldn't in your case the equivalent to Goodreads be basically every gaming news outlet out there that recommends and tests games? I could see Steam doing something like the free (which I could recommend) that lists every released game within the last 7 days and orders them by the amount of user interaction, in this case the number of comments. But you would still end up having the same problem that unpopular games will still have less exposure because they are at the bottom of all lists - or that Steam would have to select games that are getting more promotion and by doing so manually selecting the winners and loosers.

500k CCU is just an estimate based on the numbers alone. The real number would probably be way above those 500k. You need to factor in that the 125k CCU from BL2 happened in 2012. That was a time when Steam only had around 6 million active users at a time and people didn't buy as many games as they to today. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that having a 4 times larger player base would also result in ... well... 4 times as many players. You also need to realize that especially Borderlands2 and Steam have a very special relation. Some say that Steam grew this big after 2012 because of BL2, others say that Borderlands became todays Juggernaut because of Steam. Whatever the truth is: you can be sure that Borderlands has more fans and more sales potential (due to that special relation) within the Steam community than any other community out there, including the consoles combined.

I agree with BronsonLee that the toxicity has risen to an unhealthy level (even higher than I imagined with those threads tbh) but I honestly don't see that level dropping anytime soon. It feels like each day someone decides to add fuel to the fire (like that Ooblets mess) and people won't stop trying to defend their own stance or attack the opponents opinion, especially if it's that easy once somebody else messed up. I don't think that the heated arguments will stop anytime soon as long as we keep on having these PR blunders that basically go like "no, we won't move to the EGS, promise!" - 2 months later - "We are now EGS exlusive! YAY!". We even had posts like these from verafied people here and people feel betrayed if a person boasts about releasing on Steam and then - suddenly after some kind of exclusivity deal got announced - ignore all questions why the game won't be released on Steam anymore as was promised. I can't blame people that feel lied to. BUT the issue is that most PR strategies are never intended to be truthful, or good for you as a customer / consumer. Marketing departments aren't your friends and they will say anything that is needed to gain profits and switch their stances any time. And some PR voices are absolutely trolling at this point, see Tim Sweeney, and this trolling gets echo'ed everywhere. That guy would instantly get bannend on Era. I guess we'll see the current trends continue that communities as a whole either shift to the Pro-EGS or Anti-EGS side. Era feels like an outlier in that regards with a mix close to 50:50 but that might be related to the huge parts of PC-Era that already left in the last weeks / months on their own or were forced to leave.I doubt that many people would have any issues with that. The console and PC eco systems aren't comparable when it comes to the matter of exclusivity.

Thread Epic Store May Have Cloud Saves Now (update: live on select games now)
You might want to stop acting like adding a shopping cart or incremental upload saving (aka "cloud saves") is some kind of magic or big thing in software development. If Epic actually cared about these things then they could have released it already years ago for the EGS. But they didn't. It's unlikely that nobody at Epic is able to design and implement a shopping cart or cloud saves because those are pretty basic tasks. So either there is not a single developer who is above amateur level within Epic OR the company decided to use their coders for different projects and not have one (or maybe a small group) working on these parts. It's up to you whether you want to believe that nobody within Epic is able to programm these basic elements (hint: Epic has awesome devs) or if the management didn't care about these features. But if you have nobody working on something then you obviously won't see any progress. Hire additional devs to do a job will actually make "it go faster", so yeah.Agile describes the dev workflow like Lean or Scrum. These terms say nothing about the state or way of a release. Your comparison makes no sense. You can release a faulty prototype that has no features or runs like crap or release a fully working software with all kind of development philosophies.

Thread Death of the Arena Shooter
Arena Shooters haven't died but they have evolved into Tactical / Round based Shooters (and currently Battle Royale titles). Kinda the same way how RTS games have evolved into Mobas (and currently Tower Defense / AutoChess). Game design usually happens in some kind of looped cycles and I'm sure that we'll see the reappearance of classic arena shooters at some point. Arena Shooters were successfull because people loved the mechanics, the core design and the gameloop itself. Right now we're at a point in game design where people tend to love "the progress" (like levels, ranks, skins, unlocks, skills, battle passes) of games and not so much the game itself. This will revert back to a focus on mechanics and enjoyment of playing games someday.
Published

(23037105)

Thread Death of the Arena Shooter
Let me rephrase it that way: the old arena shooters had only their gameplay loop and nothing like a "cosmetic progression layer" (I really like that term) to build a user base. There was nothing else -next to the core gameplay- that the developers could focus on so naturally it feels like the gameplay loop was better than in, for example, BR titles because the loop soley had to pull new gamers in and keep them engaged with your game. There were A LOT of arena shooters and many failed to gain an audience, but we usually only remember the big names with those nearly perfected gameplay loops. I mean CS:GO is still basically the original CounterStrike but with pink guns, golden knifes and fancy badges. The gameplay loop is still kinda the same. UT embraced skills and stuff with UT2k3 and vehicles in UT2k4 (?) and this broke the gameplay loop, killing UT as a franchise. Right now I can't remember what happened with Quake4, but the IP also didn't manage to keep its core gameplay alive with the Q3->Q4 jump. From todays (BR) perspective you might want to add the old Battlefield and CoD titles to the oldschool arena shooters. But both franchises also embraced new core gameplay concepts - mostly for the jump to consoles - which scaled them down from one of the biggest PC franchises to just average franchises.

Usually you're already counted as a gamer if you play some random smartphone game for 5 minutes every 6 months or so.Hi there and welcome to 2019! Those 3 names are surrounded by a constant huge wave of negativity because it feels like one of those 3 create a new shitstorm each day. People don't have to pay attention to the details of why something is tainted. But the "average gamer" will surely notice if something got a bad reputation. Thread Tim Sweeney: Epic Games will cover future refunds and work with other stores to ensure key availability for crowdfunded games that go Epic exclusive
That is obviously a false statement. There are a lot of examples of how that cut DOES already hurt consumers, especially the poorer ones. Just go with the example of gift cards that you can buy in local shops. There are Steam gift cards worth between $5 and $50 and Valve is paying the costs for their production, transaction fees and general local sales management which usually totals at around ~12%. So you have a gift card, worth $50 - with Valve paying an additional fee of $8 for it out of their own pocket - (poorer) consumers can get Steam credit without the requirement of having a Creditcard. Epic does explicitly not want gift cards because they refuse to / can't pay any fees out of their own pocked for any customer. Do I personally care about those gift cards? No. But people in poorer countries like India definitely do care about these cards because more than 70% of all transactions are getting paid with them. Saying "" is such a stupid and / or arrogant statement because you either don't care about people with a lower income or because you can't be bothered to inform yourself and draw dumb conclusions. And that's just one of many more examples. Epic is looking at those emerging markets like India and want's to get a piece of the cake without realizing that exactly these markets need to be subsidized.

Nobody knows how long the Fortnite revenue stream will last and that's why they are trying to brute-force invest their current profits to create another source of income in the form of the EGS. If the Fortnite revenue dries up then they can't buy that many exclusives anymore, causing them to having an even harder time etablishing the EGS as a valuable store, and that's the reason why everything seems so rushed and / or in hurry: because they actually are in a hurry.

No. If you think that for example the Steam marketing-eco-system is the same as a simple mobile storefront or the console counterparts then you have absolutely not a single idea of what you are talking about. Also especially the smaller Devs have often no (or small) marketing budgets and therefore often rely on some of the special marketing variations which Steam offer for "free" within those 30% like the social or viral marketing aspects. I understand why half of the posters were already arguing with you and were trying to correct your hot takes. It doesn't seem that you know a lot about the stuff you're talking about. It absolutely depends on when or who you're asking. The PR releases are always glorified marketing blahblah with little to no "honest" opinions. I still remember the shitshow on the Satisfactory Discord after the exclusivity got announced where even some of the devs were complaining about the EGS. Discord servers in general are a pretty good way to evalute the real opinions once the Devs start to talk in a more private manner. I happen to know some devs that are working on EGS exclusive titles and they really really dislike the EGS situation. Devs are prolly less extreme in their pro-EGS and anti-EGS stances but it feels like the opinion from people "within the industry" doesn't differ that much from the opinions on Era. Think of it like an artist trying to create a piece of art and then then someone decides to limit the audience of people that will have the chance to see your artpiece.

Thread Paradox Interactive: "The 70/30 revenue split is outrageous"
The issue with your line of thought lies within the forced exclusivity on the EGS. Why does a dev / pub need to sign an exlusivity deal (in exchange for some nice bags with dollar signs on it) if the EGS would already be the prime focus to sell your games? You could easily sell your games on EGS and a lot other stores without taking those exclusivity deals. One might think that those moneyhats are needed so devs / pubs move over to the EGS which causes the idea that the EGS is probably not the best / most ideal store to sell your game exclusive on. Otherwise there wouldn't be the need to "persuade" the pubs to move the game to the EGS.Oddly enough it appears that normal employees (like a dev) had no say in those deals and they were pulled off by the management or publisher alone. There are several developers that came out and publicity stated that they don't like those exclusivity deals. Even more devs do that in private.

I like how he literally states that nearly all small independet stores already have more features than the EGS. Because for some reason features are a bad thing so he comes up with the idea that exclusives are the only possible chance to gain marketshare (because features do not count, as long as they aren't EGS exclusive features like having no shopping cart) - while saying that Steam is only successful because of their features but it would be unfair if the EGS would have to compete with those features because it can't. Schroedingers / Sweeneys features. You never know if those features might be important or not until Tim tells you

Let's take a game like ARK Survival Evolved which relies heavily on community generated mods. The Steam version has mods (workshop) while the Win10 Version does not support any. Guess which version has a marketshare of 98%. I'd say that the Steam workshop definately plays a role in sale / Steam account numbers because it provides additional content for free. Same is true when you compare Steam to EGS. One system supports modding and the other doesn't. That makes the choice pretty easy for many players.

People want to feel validated with their choices and desperately want to be on the winning side. So all others should fail.
