Thread The Last of Us Part II and Iron Man VR delayed until further notice
a lot of virus related media gets a watch from people during these times. I see 28 days later, contagion etc. recommended left and right, and as Eggiem states there is barely any backlash for RE3 or Half life Alyx by actual customers, instead only by a select amount of reviewers that deem it tasteless to release it during these times. A lot of businesses predict (probably more based on hope) that things will be cleared up around the end of the year, but I am 99% sure the PS5 and XsX will both be delayed to summer next year. We will be in this mess for a while, better get used to it

good point, I overlooked production, design, tech and QA and the tons of other departments that deal with wrapping up a project, lots of digital marketing work, audio and cinema departments etc. I usually don't deal with them enough, and we haven't had big crunch in our studio for years, and those who do are usually really small teams that work a few weekends tops.

we are talking about a few months in before they would have to ship. those that crunch at this point are programmers mostly fixing up bugs, maybe some asset tweaks by artists. but that is about it. I highly doubt an experienced team like ND who has used motioncapture did not had their motioncapture sessions done at least 6 months ago. You cant just capture and its usable instantly. it needs to be processed and this can take time. so trust me, there would not be any motion capture this late in production since you needs months work after the last session to tweak the capture and do additional animation work. Crunch is hardly ever studio wide, it affects groups at a time.

they get paid, just like inhouse employees from the initial funding, not from any revenue flow of sold products. the delay does not impact them much, just like it wont impact the devs themselves beside finding it shitty for their game to sit on a shelf for months and not have people play and enjoy it

Is the chance that you will get sick, even with protection a real threat? sure. but on the flip side, there are people out there that don't have the choice to sit at home and be with the family. everybody is sacrificing something this year, and coming together and fight this together is the best thing in humanity right now, and I am pretty sure you did not invest all of this to just sit on the bench when push comes to shove. I absolutely understand your wife, but it is a bit selfish to keep a trained medical on the bench who could be out there and make a difference, help and be a change for even a low percent. again I assume you went into this field for a reason, and I am pretty sure it was not about the money, or about sitting at home in times of crisis making sandwiches.

reviews manage how they review a game based on the games merits. You as a customer manage if you think you want to play a game about a virus. that is where it should be. So no, I do not think reviewers should take sars-cov-2 as a possible impact of review score.

Thread Valve Explains Why Half-Life 2: Episode 3 Was Never Made
That is what you get when you are a company like valve who's main interest is to make ground breaking entertainment that always pushed the medium forward. You can't really lower the bar for yourself just to satisfy fans and I totally understand their point of view on this, every studio wants their next game to be a slam success, but often don't have the resources to cut projects that clearly don't deliver and meet their own expectations. After Episode 2 it was clear that the model wasn't working and the industry was already moving away from it. They wisely cut their losses.

Valve is a company with foresight, and they aren't necessarily looking to pump out a game for MASS SALES and REVENUE. because lets be honest, they have steam to keep their pockets filled, which opens them up for creative freedom and do interesting products. So in my mind I see them do another VR game to raise the bar even more within that medium, in combination with future headsets just to push the VR medium forward.

Thread DOOM Eternal |OT| Hell's Bells
I am at a point where I am just before 2 hours in and thinking about refunding the game on steam. its 60 bucks for an experience that I don't enjoy. I am hearing people say it gets better mid game, and I kinda want to stick it out, but I have a hard time convincing myself to start playing again, and that in my mind isn't a great sign. At the moment I am thinking of refunding and buying it maybe a few years later when its dirt cheap. I think they added too much mechanics that have to be spooned into your head that the opening levels (the first 3 to 4) are really hard to get trough. not in terms of difficulty but the way it forces you to play in a certain way since you don't have much choice in mods and weapons, and abilities. The dash def adds some needed maneuverability to get outa dodge, but I am already at points where I want to avoid fights, just because there might be a certain enemy type coming up. Its just a frustrating and unpleasant feeling to me, I am supposed to be the motherfucking doomslayer. 2016 had a weak opening too but at least there you get into the groove really early on and you cant wait to get into a fight. here its the absolute oposite!

hmm.. I just bought it, played a few hours.. and I dont know. I was a huge fan of DOOM 2016, that game just sucked me in. but honestly, DOOM eternal comes across as a bit of a chore very early on. Its too much intensity, too much going on. the platforming just feels very odd and out of place, and I have a hard time really enjoying it. all the enemies with different tactics. it feels massively prechewed in terms of how you have to deal with combat. in 2016 I felt like there was room to find my own rhythm, here it forces you into a rhythm and if you don't play like that, you will have a bit of a clumsy sucky time. I will give it more hours offcourse but at this point, I vastly prefer 2016. anyone else in the same boat?

Thread AMD RDNA 2 Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) Demo
I said a company LIKE AMD and NVIDIA specifically cannot just take a game and try to showcase it using their hardware without the permission of the developer. there are deals made around this stuff and I know this for a fact. Whenever you see game footages in any of their product announcements, videos etc. they is money involved between AMD and those game products, for the simple reason that they use those footages to SELL their own product. The reason why Nvidia's demos are far better in demonstrating raytracing is because they A. invested a ton of money into hiring an inhouse team of high end artists (I know of a few of them, like , and ) to work on these demos. AMD is trying to catch up and are starting to see the value in high end demonstrations of their hardware.

Its gonna be playable on the new console regardless. and as far as I know, most devs at ND are already working from home, so I don't see any reason for delays, unless their servers blow up and waste 5 months of work. Working from home isn't much different from working at work as a dev. I am doing it now for a few days and honestly, productivity went up since there are less time consuming meetings and more time to work and less distractions of open floor plan studios. Its obviously not ideal, but I highly doubt it would delay any work more than a few days at best.

True, Neither is MS really. They just already have their shell finished and are showing off their features in bite sized chunks. They did this from a different more effective angle in my opinion. I guess we have to wait for both to arrive at a point where they want to talk content. Its just with sony we will get everything at once, and wish MS we already know a bunch more. I am so curious what sony will do with their design, and I hope they will let DF etc. do a hands on at some point, but I think their hands are tied now with corona. Thread DF: PS5’s Variable Clocks Will Force Devs to Make Choices; Only 1st Party Will Truly Utilize SSD’s Speed (wccftech)
Knowing how devs wil adapt, I think both consoles will get parity. Crytek made a ray trace implementation without requiring an RTX card, there is tons you can do in software. and on the flipside of that. most multiplats will choose the middle ground instead of tweaking a game per console basis. But honestly who knows how things will shape up. The current generation felt a bit stale. both consoles pretty much being similar and already under powered machines (weak CPU's being a bottleneck). Next gen we are gonna see some truly stellar games from first party studios, both on XSX as on PS5. I can't wait!! edit: People keep forgetting that hardware is one point of the puzzle. but software can go above and beyond and really make the hardware shine. I am super happy with this generation of power, both MS and Sony kicked butt with their hardware and I am very curious to see how things will fold out this generation when it comes to content. Gonna be a very exiting few years ahead of us!

no I said it runs 100% in boost mode. the mode itself can throttle, but it tries to boost all the time, with temps being the influencing factor. they had to cap it to make the system quiet enough and cool enough. put the machine in a hot room, it will clock lower, put it in a cold room and it will boost to the cap. Did anyone watch this presentation? or are you all just looking at the spec sheet and inventing meaning from words.

Thread Call of Duty: Warzone |OT| Remember, No Chicken Dinner
The thing is, you want to give bad players more of a chance to survive, so the fights from biggest to smaller circle stay consistent. Separating the good from the bad very early on creates an empty gap that too many battle royale games have. Thats why the loadouts are easy to get for everybody, same for respawns. So as I said, you either, 1. keep it as is, or 2. no one has access to it except as a random drop in the middle of the match where people can go to to change to a loadout. it would create more dangerous hotspots for sure. But it in that case the looting system needs a boost with stuff you can get from it because without load outs, normal looting needs to be a more important part of the game. The last thing you want as I said before is to eliminate bad players early on. you want them to feel like they have many chances and not feel like some sweaty dude bro sitting in a corner can kick em to the loading screen. You want more options to have fire fights, more clutch moment, more chances to regroup and engage with the game. especially as newer players. Remember, this is a free to play game which depends entirely on people playing. make it to brutal for new players, they will easily quit the game and never play again.

Thread Call of Duty: Warzone |OT| Remember, No Chicken Dinner
You cannot increase money for loadout drops, they need to either remove it completely, or rethink it on a fundamental bases. just increasing price will make the skillgap too large. good players will be able to get their good weapons, and average players will struggle to earn enough money to compete. It needs to be accessible to everybody or to no one. I would remove it and have it as a random drop only.

Thread Do you think AAA studios should calm down with their pursuit of visual showcase and high production value?
Stop saying crunch exists because of poor management decisions. There have there been cases where its because of that, sure, but most of the time Crunch exists because of the nature of game development. You are correct about player expectations, and I get to that in a bit. If it was a linear path from A to B it would be easily Manageable and would mean the more games you make the more efficient the process becomes, but its not. No matter how many times you make a game, the experience is never the same. This is because the industry is always moving forward, there is a insurmountable amount of competition among studios who all try to fight for consumer attention that drives constant change and innovation. The only thing that keeps projects spiraling out of control are the skill and experience of those involved and how to avoid time sinks and project traps and this includes management! On top of that you have the publishers and money men who keep things from not costing too much. That is usually how projects get cancelled, changed, etc. Devs have the aspirations to make the greatest game ever, every damn time. and management usually keeps it within bounds and publishers cut when its needed. I would even go as far as to say, broken products happen because of consumer expectations. the Early access model exists because of increasing development times and ever demanding consumer expectations and demand to release products every few years or so. Too long a gap and a developer is considered dead (DEV X dont make games anymore) and the gamer move to the next big thing like locust. We are all screaming for attention into an over saturated market and we do our best to give you what you want. but its never enough. people rip you apart because of a stutter here and there while they have not updated their graphics card or system drivers in a decade. For me personally, the job is the best thing that happened to me. working on projects with amazing talented people. each giving it their all. The worst thing are the average consumers who don't give a single fuck about those who made their next big game. they play and complain, play and complain. Then you have some amazing fans who spend insane amounts of time playing our products, sticking to it, streaming it every day, making content on youtube, or make fan art, mods, and cosplay. anyway, went a bit into a tangent here.

Thread Why aren't there leaks for everything?
There are, which if you read elenarie's post you would start to understand, which is one part of it. The other part is the fickle nature of game development. One part is that projects get cancelled ALL THE TIME! in various states of development. I can easily say, for any project that gets made, 5 will be cancelled (conservative number) and not only for reasons that involve quality of the project. Sometimes projects get pulled because it simply wasn't the right time to do it, lack of publisher interest. A deal being shattered because of a leak, or hundred other different reasons. Another part involves the way a game project evolves over time. Often it starts out as a totally different beast and slowly transforms into the end product. Its a roller coaster ride, and imagine the outrage of every decision being made if this process was public. There are always 50 % that like it, and 50 that don't, then as a developer, in which direction do you turn? A more open development means less creative and risky decisions. Gamers are notoriously bad game designers.

harsh truth, you can't. I can count on zero hands, the time that in my professional 12 year career, I witnessed someone that is not in upper management pitch a game idea internally and got turned into a project, let alone someone outside the industry coming in with ideas. There are plenty of ways to get into the industry and none of them are being an idea guy. if you really want to make a game.. go make a game and don't let people stop you! In the end its all about how bad you want it and how far you are willing to go. Engines are free, there are tutorials for visual scripting or how to learn to program everywhere! The barrier into indie development is super low these days and kinda reminds me of the old days of garage devs. All you need is a computer, and the will to make it happen. It wont be easy and will probably be the most challenging thing you will ever do in your life, but its worth it!

I personally went back to a non pro intuos large. Non screen tablets are better built and have less technical issues and the improvements a screen makes to my drawing abilities are nil, plus it has more than enough pressure points and sensitivity (I actually find that anything beyond those specs are overkill and wont make a dent in translating lines from hand to screen). Aside from those points, they are also light, don't get hot and I can put them everywhere. And when its cool stuff like Berserk, or Blame or knights of Sidonia, its unwatchable because of the 3d, and even worse, 15 fps 3d.

Botw was already plenty of stunning, while you can always throw more flops at a title I don't see it making the game better. That's the thing with Nintendo titles. More flops is nice but their games are usually very good regardless of resolution or fancy graphics. Nintendo always feels like they are after making pure, great games and I think because they don't create big hardware boxes they don't go overboard in their game design with features that don't help their games.

Not really, live demos get cancelled far more often than you are aware of. There can be a ton of reasons unrelated to the actual state of the game for a live demo to be pulled. Heck, a live demo might have been a good idea on paper but once you actually rehearse and see the footage on screen, a VR game might not be as "watchable" as you might think for an event like this.

The only reason valve is more communicative of late is because valve actually had stuff to announce, things that have been in the pipeline already for years before. They still are same old valve, who goes into dark until they actually have stuff to ship and epics impact in this is like a drop on a hotplate. For me, and I speak just for me, EGS has been a hot mess. The amount of payment issues with that platform made me give up on getting control on launch day and skipped on a few exclusive indies. I never, ever had an issue with steam in this regard.

Camping is something that is hard if not impossible to fix. the more you "fix" things, control how players play your game, the more predictable combat will be the less dynamic and fun multiplayer is to players. You also dont want to show the devs hand too forcefully, breaks all immersion when you have penalties and messages forcing them to move. Everybody plays different, and that makes MP games fun since people are unpredictable in their tactics. sure its shitty, but camping is the dark side of the coin, remove those, I truly believe you take something away to player choice and the intricate player dynamics of MP.

For me since convenience is just something you deal with a little bit, mainly in setup, I prefer to have improved comfort for my eyes in terms of FOV or refreshrate that you notice trough the many hours of playing. I rather have a more comfortable experience since you wear these things for hours at a time, also the index controllers tie into this since you can just relax your hand instead of having to hold the controllers which means more comfort.

Happy to see a new installment but the art direction, especially with the characters lets me down a bit. HL2 is not really stylized, while this clearly goes into that direction. Something in the character stylization sticks out to me like a sore thumb. Not hating it, but its a bit.. I dont know how to word it. The old HL2 had a bit more finesse to it in the characters and the world, this feels too crowded and over the top. I saw the next graphical step in HL to have characters photo scanned from unique looking people and a certain look to the world that I am not really seeing here. Anyway, never thought I would see the day VALVE announcing a new HL game! cant wait to actually play the game.

Rumored, based of "something like netflix" which could mean a bunch of things related to streaming. but lets say it is, MS isnt going full subscription model, they still have their traditional console with normal boxed priced games. Stadia goes full 100% streaming for their entire product Another downside to the Netflix model is that in order for a game to be sustainable if you require them to sell your service they need to be fresh for a while, meaning at any time its a good idea to pull some games from the store and reintroduce them later to freshen up the library. there are plenty of shows or movies on netflix that they pulled. atleast with stadia the premise is that when you pay for a product you can always play it, since removing that game at any point will sour relations with devs/publishers and customers. with netflix like subscription models its kinda part of the deal since they would own your library, you are just renting and they will do whatever they need to do to their game roster in order to keep the users coming.

You also pay for those consoles, which in Stadias case you also do when you pay 10 bucks a month. How I see it, the base 1080p60fps SDR is perfectly fine for a no upfront cost service. Also the base specs will most likely change over time as the pro specs change as well. I can easily see 4k60fpsUHD be the standard when the pro version will move up to support 8k /120fps in the future.

Its a very safe service. now if they would go 100% with this and go full 100% digital and subscription model you can call it a serious strategy.

Thread Stadia is the most mishandled and poorly messaged gaming platform launch since Wii U
I don't know why people think it would work. As a developer you want top dollar for your game, with subscription services you will get a major downward trend on prices. This will do two things: First It might be attractive for customers but developers wont be able to invest as much in their games when your game gets sold for far less than its worth on any other platform. this will result in far less diversity, and games that are easy and cheap to develop and can earn extra money in micro transactions to become the main type of games on there. less single player titles, more money grabbers just so developers will be able to earn as much from Stadia. (look at mobile where there was a clear race for the bottom dollar just to compete and its filled with cheap almost bait garbage) Second, if you have an all you can eat Netflix style service you will reduce developers with their game to marketing items in order to increase subscriber count, resulting again in less diversity. Only games that can grow the platform will be allowed on Stadia. There is a reason why all you can eat restaurants wont offer the best quality food and its always the same kind of restaurant. you want your meals to be dirt cheap in order to still be able to earn money. as I see it they did the best they could do, with offering the platform to devs to use how they see fit, you want to do a free to play game, sure, do it. you want to charge 60 bucks for high quality AAA single player games? sure! you want to do subscription type games like mmo's. all fine. the only thing google cares about it to entice gamer to pay 10 bucks a month for a 4k60fps stream and reap in the usual 30% cut* every platform holder charges. *this is a guess, I have no idea what percentage they charge but 30% is the industry standard and I don't see them going higher or lower.

high speed internet is a thing in most of europe, you dont need to use their controller, and paying for games is a thing on every platform* except you don't need to buy hardware for stadia and I can play it on any screen in my house. Porting games is far less complex than you might think (porting a game to stadia is as easy and as difficult as porting a game to Playstation or Xbox) also since it uses vulkan, since there is already an industry shift happening towards that API and stadia will only fuel that harder and I am not claiming this purely on ubisoft * A netflix model is financially unsustainable for video games and would have resulted in a crash of value for games.

They will just spend up to 60 bucks on the game when the service launches officially for free for the 1080p experience using an old xbox controller or whatever (you dont need the stadia controller) so you can limit the money you give google to almost 0 dollars*. *I am pretty sure google still gets the same 30% cut every platform/store holder gets from devs when you buy a game via stadia The demographic that doesn't want to shell out money for a console is far larger than you think, especially when next gen comes around and those 500 dollar machines are mighty expensive compared to a virtually free service. Their opening strategy isn't to convert gamers that already own a console, its to get those that are interested in the idea of being able to stream high end games at any polace in the house without cabling tethering a heavy box to the TV, or those who might want to have their kids play games in their own room without having to buy a second xbox/ps4, etc. There are plenty of potential use cases where Stadia is an attractive idea. especially around christmas 2020 when the big boys launch I can see the existence of Stadia eating in the potential early xbox scarlett/PS5 sales. Especially if they wont have very strong exclusives. Plenty of parents will be reluctant to paying big bucks for a dedicated next gen box compared to just paying 10 bucks a month and buy them their desired 4k next gen games. Google also being willing to invest in AAA studios to either have an exclusive stadia project or add stadia to the to be developed platforms for said game will do a lot. 10 bucks a month is a veeery abstract thing, especially to those who already pay for various streaming services. its almost an invisible amount which stands in stark contrast to a 500 dollar price tag for just a big noisy box in the living room.

Its a big shoe to fill but certainly not an impossible one. Off course you will always have edge cases, but to say because you live in Australia and you suffer from issues because you are in effect an edge case, does not make the tech less possible. For most people, network prediction works 99.9% of the time, does this mean the tech doesn't work? no. Just because you live somewhere where its most likely to fail does not make the technology less possible. You say you live in Australia with tons of shit internet and high latency, so off course you are going to bash a pure online service like Stadia which most likely wont perform as it should in your area of the woods. Why even comment on this stuff at all if you are not even going to use it. Are you afraid your current gen or next gen console will suddenly disappear? poof? Don't worry. Standard Consoles will still be around for decades, long enough for your end of the world to upgrade its internet infrastructure. You talk as if progress never happens, and technology doesn't advance. in 10 years the gaming landscape will be different and streaming will be an integral part of it.

MP games make "predictions" all the time for well over a decade now about what a player might do. these are micro predictions in the milliseconds and generally are very successful but like in MP games you might get some mismatches. normally these aren't noticeable but the higher the latency the more you get these artifacts (rubberbanding) where the prediction has to correct every time it gets updated. the longer time between updates the more dramatic the effect. I can imagine Stadia using a similar approach and its not some nonsense. What they are talking about are in the range of frames, prediction milliseconds ahead to bridge the noticeable latency gap simple but technical demonstration of this stuff is explained here edit: I am not saying its exactly this, but you can do these predictions locally to further reduce latency and nobody knows what machine learning can bring to the table. All this possible future real time game data from thousands of players being studied by AI, building some prediction algorithm

Eehh. a single person can make a game, but the scope of AAA games these days you need teams of hundreds of devs costing up to a few million a month in wages alone (people don't work for free and when it comes to the AAA industry, they often live in dev hub cities with high living costs) and the scary part is that wages typically arent great unless you are a director/management or programmer/engineer and even then they would make almost twice as much in any other tech industry. Dev cost have not gone down, budgets of 100 million dollars to develop a AAA game are the norm. Tools being easier making it more accessible for small groups of people (indies and solo devs) to make games give the illusion that development got cheaper. in reality it didn't.

I would agree with you. AAA doesn't mean how good a game is, it is often higher production value, putting most effort into better graphics since that is the easiest to effectively scale up, which is also where you see most time/money being spent in art assets when you talk about the AAA industry

from experience a core team sits often around that numbers (projects I worked on sit between 50 to 70 people for a core team) but then close to release it is common to expand drastically with contractors to get the work done on time. Also you can see with death stranding, looking at the world that most of it is procedural generated terrain/foliage placement etc. Its a smart approach, with most work going into coding the various interconnecting systems and less custom story events and containing those to the scripted in game cutscenes. anyway, the thing is, when you mention that it takes nothing but time, you have to realize that when you talk about a studio, time cost money in terms of wages/taxes/studiospace/licenses for tools and depending on the studio often snacks/food and drinks

Games that then need to be ported to a totally different system (The dev tools for the Wii-u where .. rough), not alone mentioning that a lot of developers would be like.. "hmm, yeah no", for that exclusive right to publish on a dying console and shitting in the face of people waiting for the game on the platform it was originally announced on. Swiping exclusives is not the best PR move and it lays the shit in the shoes of individual development studios who now have to tell their fan base why their game is suddenly exclusive to the wii-u. Again, wanting something is easy, actually being able to make that happen is hard as hell, and takes time.

" A first person view point is equally interactive with the environment and choices as a third person viewpoint. there is no difference.

You can, take resident evil for example with resident evil 7, you can still have the same gameplay but from a more immersive viewpoint, or Take strategy games for example, you can still do a first person strategy game and there are many examples that do this, some point of views are more obvious for some genres but none as far as I am aware are exclusive.

that is not what I am saying, I am saying for an interactive media first person offers more immersion since you are put into the head of the character making the decisions. not that first person is more interactive.

well fuck me then, where was the outrage at the beginning? and a big fat LOL at people who think making first person cut-scenes is way easier than third person ones, they clearly have no clue what they are talking about. You still do all the animation work minus the face, you still animate the body. Its way hard to make a first person view believable and you don't have facial emotions to work with as a crutch for good emotional delivery. also All first person action is hand animated, while most third person characters can be motion captured. I have the idea people think its just some dude recording mouse look movements hahaha

Thread CDPR: Cyberpunk 2077 will still have "some very occasional" 3rd person cutscenes
Except video games are meant as interactive media, and with that in mind immersion is achieved better trough a first person view. Third person action, framing, etc are movie techniques, they work fine to set a story and structure a movie to deliver a story but they are not the one true way to tell a story in a video game just like first person is not the ultimate way to tell a story. In cyberpunk we have both, third person to establish setting and character and do some of the framing of your character, and first person for the moment to moment action in order to deliver immersion. Its both worlds combined, so why are we upset again?

Can someone explain to me what the big deal is because we now have a 33 page thread with people arguing back and forth. The game, from the earliest reveal was clearly shown to have some third person cut-scenes while the bulk of the story is delivered in a first person setting, I don't understand what the problem is. You customize your character for those moments and a sense of immersion, seeing your clothes from a first person view, or your face in a mirror and the full character in the scattered 3rd person cut-scenes, which I am sure will still carry weight. What I dont understand is that it was already shown like this, where people hoping a bunch of story stuff was suddenly third person? where people having issues with first person story delivery when the first reveal came out?

All characters in this game look like heavy exaggerated versions, (caricatures) of their archetypes and I have 0 problems with that. I didn't then and I def don't now. When looking at the lineup they all somehow make sense to me and I would def have a similar approach if tasked to design characters in this art style. I understand the sorceress would be the most difficult one, covering her up more would help still some of the argument against her, but she looks like she can revive the dead with just her touch and embrace which is how I understood her character.

I really have no clue what version of the original reveal you guys have watched. Honestly the ONLY 3rd person cutscene is with V in the elevator and then in her appartment when V gets out of bed, the rest is ALL from a first person perspective minus vehicle driving. From the whole 48 minutes the third person cutscene is 2.5 minutes long. The whole thing def wasnt sprinkled in with 3rd person cutscenes. It was clear from the beginning that first person cutscenes are the main format of story delivery. I def have no clue why we now have a 28 page thread with people up in arms about it.

I kinda agree, nothing about the world gives meaning to gannendorf. His evil is not well expressed in the world other than there be enemies and ruins around the castle. all the inhabitants seem to be pretty much fine how it is right now and they all have little lives and the world looks to nice. All the towns seem to be doing pretty fine. There is no meaningful gathering of force to push you to defeating gannendorf. it just feels like an empty target. The beasts where great but then to be ready for that Castle fight.. maybe its a mix of not wanting it to be pretty much over. Gananddorf is no sauron for sure. no mass dispersion of people pulled from their homes with you witnessing. no large armies marching and burning everything around them. everything is simply a bit too cute. and nice. Heck even all the enemies are funny and pleasant.

I am pretty sure as you mentioned with maybe more dramatic memories or actual things going on in the world they can enhance the feeling of wanting to fight for a world. Most likely at that time in point it made a whole lot of sense. Game development is a very dynamic beast and at any point of the process it could suddenly not work (as in on paper it might be the greatest idea ever, but when actually building it, it could happen that the game is simply not fun and you start missing milestones and your project is in trouble. This is most likely nobodies fault and just how these things go.) Atleast Nintendo gave an update and has been transparent on that they gave it to retro instead (Retro before this, was most likely too busy with other projects that I imagine are now cancelled to make way for MP4) Things fuck up, projects fail, schedules misalign and strategies can fail. You are giving nintendo far too much shit. This is a business that deals with forever moving targets and finicky audiences that are very sensitive to trends while working with properties that not only are works of art, but the creative process of making a game is equally as unpredictable and dynamic as the industry itself.

Art directors are pretty much managers, heck you don't even need to be able to draw to be an art director. You do need to know how to manage art, which is why most art directors come from artistic backgrounds. Well it would make sense Retro would be involved in some way, maybe in a consulting role, but these are rumors so whatever. When it comes to taking over a project from another team, even when being willing to starting from scratch, the desire is always to see if anything can be salvaged. Most likely there is very little and it all depends on the desire of your publisher to keep the core concept of the game intact or to try something new.

Just trust that Retro will do a kickass job. Sure, but I bet they got material from the previous studio who was working on it that will take months to get and fish trough to see what the state of that was and how to continue further, and also Hiring is hard, even for a title like Metroid and a studio like Retro. Too many studios, not enough experienced people to go around. Every year there are thousands of students with various level of qualities released into the job market around the world, making it a nightmare to find quality experienced personel. I have not met a single studio who has had no hiring issues the last couple of years.Easier said then done. Maybe they don't have internal artists who want to become an art director. Those are very different jobs and a good artist does not make a good art director and vice versa. Knowing myself, 35 years old, I rarely play console games anymore. nor do I want to keep upgrading my computer since I dont have the time to be honest. I rather skip the big upfront cost and pay 10 bucks a month and a game from time to time. Even the PS5/next Xbox arent getting me exited anymore and I doubt I can justify paying for one just for the two or three games I will buy for it. So especially with most titles being Multiplatform, stadia looks like a pretty attractive solution for me. A lot can change in those 7 months. Imagine you are expanding the game from a small vertical slice to its final size the past couple of years and the game that ran at a smooth 30 now sits at an unstable 20 fps. Performance has plummeted and now you need to meet your ship date and optimize the crap out of your game to deliver a stable 30 (meaning you need to hit atleast 40/50fps and cap it at 30). some of this stuff you can do in code, most of it is asset culling. Lower draw distances, lower quality LOD's closer to the camera, less props, lower resolution in your lightmaps, less lights with dynamic shadows etc etc. Optimization always happens last, its a very natural part of game development. Thats why games can suddenly look like tits after that process to keep it stable.

I see one tweet and they apologized for it. Its really hard to navigate this space correctly, mistakes get made, but I wont vilify a developer just because they made one mistake before when handling a complex issue like this in a game where its really easy to pull things out of context. Its a brave thing to tackle these subjects and I think they deserve some slack, especially when positioning them in complex narrative political situations they are building in this world

Its kind of natural to give them the benefit of the doubt since there is a whole game around this to provide context that you are simply missing. The image IS taken out of context. you cannot deny that. Only after you play the game and with intended context if its still a problem, only then you can criticize it properly.

just thinking about price here. They will be earning money somehow and not from your 10 bucks only. I am pretty sure, like stream they take a reasonable cut from devs and I can imagine if devs use more than one GPU they will take a bigger cut from them. (why I don't see games using multi GPU any time soon.) I mean at the moment how I see Stadia, they provide expensive server hardware for your 10 bucks a month and a bunch of bandwidth. Its like microsoft giving you a free next gen xbox and you just pay a subscription price to use it. its a huge investment on googles part and I am pretty sure they will be getting their return somehow. maybe not trough consumers directly but somehow they will. either ingame Advertisement or something.

So the advantage of stadia is that they upgrade their hardware over time. Depending on how they do it (in gen cycles like Sony and Xbox (6 to 7 years), or maybe every 2 years would make more sense for Google) Regardless the specifics, they will upgrade their hardware over time so you can see titles getting upgrades later down the pipeline. I just dont think you can expect raytracing at launch, especially RTX specific features since those are only supported on Nvidia Hardware. Anyway, you mention fear of having to upgrade your PC.. well incase of stadia you would not have to since they upgade their hardware for you as they transition between current and future hardware models for their servers.

yes, technically its behind the curve when you compare it to high end PC, but its a really petty thing to complain about for 10 bucks a month to not have an at the moment useless technique (the difference would be barely noticeable as you can see in other RTX implementations since we have been able to get pretty close in our current rendering methods) Once we have proper platform independant raytracing be the standard then I feel complaining about it make sense, but at the moment I would not say wou would be missing much.

Also seeing as cliff is wounded in the beginning, it appears to me he may have developed that baby tech, and then died somehow, got .. and now is on some weird mission in hades, like some mercinary, having dolls as a representation of babies, like he is without clear memory, but still has these strands.. of his persona. So my theory on Cliff is that he became obsessed with finding a solution to keep people linked to the real world. (death stranding causing craters when you die and if you dont have a connection to the real world you get lost in hades, and get absorbed by it) so he developed the Bridge Babies (BB's). Bridge babies being his.. well baby project! (damn you kojima for naming things so literally, makes it hard to explain.) So at some point he died, (the trailer opens with him singing to the BB with blood on his face, slowly dying) and got lost into hades, he died before his project was complete so he has no real connection to come back. It also explains the dolls, they are like representations of the BB's to him. maybe he is trying to communicate (Dead men tell no tales). and he literally haunts you in the afterlife, his soul corrupted by the underworld.

We the creators want to show off our game the way it is intended to be shown off. The things you see as lies with Anthem is simply a result of the Game development industry being incredibly dynamic and as I said before, a game can change radically mid development. If you would see the changes that sometimes are made it would make your head spin and make you wish you could enjoy that first reveal as a consumer because its a messy process filled with heavy emotions, hard decisions and chaos all to find what we sensed when we started this mad journey of making a game.

As a game developer we craft our experience to the player from the earliest game reveal until you complete the game. These teams spend years and years crafting this narrative to the player ONTOP of actually making a game, and it should not be ruined for the players by others who for them it takes no effort than to type a few words, be this leaks or spoilers. So for us, its super demotivating to see our hard work be presented before its time. These teams are working incredibly hard to make these games a reality and want people to enjoy them because we are providing entertainment and we want to have the biggest impact since this industry is cut throat. We are all fighting for the attention of you, the players. Leaks can have a huge impact in the way players digest information about our games. The god of war reveal was a great moment since even when you assumed it was god of war and there where rumors and teases, but to have kratos appear from the shadows and after that dive straight into gameplay was a great E3 moment. Those reactions to a live reveal are huge huuuuuge motivators to the team back home where all their years of doubt are confirmed to pay off and now they need to make the promise work for the final product. Just imagine you are watching a standup comedians new routine and some guy is ruining the jokes by loudly telling them ahead of time and missing the timing, and making them sound unfunny, totally fucking up the experience for the hard working comedian and the audience. I want to see the live reaction of a trailer, not have it leaked days before from some shitty off cam shot with shitty sound quality or no sound at all. First impression are everything and it makes a huge difference how its being consumed.

Just wrapped it up, man what a show! Easily in my top 3 TV series of all time. One thing I am glad they left out since it would not have served a function and would have pushed it into fiction land, is the Mythos around the accident that was created by the people of east Europe in the years after the accident, fueled by the lies and secrecy around the exclusion zone. Rumors that the accident was deliberate in order to take attention away of the very costly but useless Duga-3 radar array located within miles of the power plant (early missile warning system) called the Russian Woodpecker for its relentless broadcast of clicking and tapping noises which interfered into TV and radio signals.. There are hundreds of Rumors by the liquidation crew that dealt with the pets and animals of Chernobyl of seeing boars with two heads, or leaves that shined in the dark. Massive mutated fish that swim in the waters. or Rumors of a giant mutated spider that sucks humans dry after finding a man slumped over, drained of blood and two bruised bites. Its no wonder that the game Stalker fitted so well adapting the novel "Roadside Picnic" and placing the story within the exclusion zone of chernobyl. (original novel took place in Canada) I am very glad they kept it within the facts and actual events and sticking to a mini series format instead of doing huge show with 7 seasons. You think they react dumb to obvious clues, but those clues are only obvious now and presented in this show to the audience in that manner. For the men who lived that, it was a situation that is a sure impossibility at the times, so those clues; debris, radiation, reports of the reactor exploded, vomiting, face burns, where not as obvious. No way would radiation be higher than 3.6 R/h when there is no meltdown and when there is only a fire. In that situation the only thing that could be done to prevent disaster is to cool the reactor so it wont melt down and send the fire department to control the fire. Dyatlov actually responded rationally, and in a cool controlled manner instead of entertaining wild theories that can cause a panic in the control room.

Dude, it can cause mistrust between studios and publishers and other third party titles leading up to cancellation of titles and future of studios being put to risk. High Voltage Software was working on a game, but was cancelled by Nintendo (who cut ties with the studio as a whole) after a disgruntled employee threw their whole studio under the bus by leaking details of the game. After High Voltage Software where unable to identify the leaker Nintendo cut ties with them. edit: this is just one example we now know of. I can assure you there are more but you have no clue about for obvious reasons. Studios lose millions because of leaks putting the lively hoods of legit hardworking devs on the line. Telltale Got fined one million dollars for leaks that happened of stranger things, eventually being part of the reason why the studio had to close down.

We can care about more than one thing. Leaking the games we spend years working on is just another brick on the pile and unlike those other problems, this is a problems people like you embrace

Yes its a problem - Completely demoralizes a teams hard work who are working up to that first reveal on the big stage to be reduced to a tweet or a leaked bad quality soundless trailer being the communities first impression. as a first impression context is everything. look at Mario + rabbids, the game was torn to shreds from its leaked description and the studio and team where gutted, questioning everything they spent the past years making while in reality they had nothing to fear. - Leakers cause massive financial damages and professional mistrust within studios resulting in cancellation in the worst case and missing market impact. you might think it will be a small thing but depending on the leak it can cause financial damage in the 7 figure range. - Hunting leakers at a company is a thing which causes incredibly toxic behavior within development studios reducing trust in each other and having the feeling you and your team have been thrown under the buss by a colleague who is/was like family to you. These are just a few of the problems. have a look at what we have to say about this and again not all leaks are the same, but still, even a name drop could spark a lot of discussion and without the actual reveal that provides proper context in the form of a video or a regulated article, already causes raving fans to throw around the wildest ideas and could be shot down or torn apart by the community just by a specific subtitle.

I am out, discussing these things with people like you is incredibly pointless. You have no knowledge of actual development yet you manage to spin everything in your incredibly simpleminded view trying to support your arguments. Good job And to think people want more transparency from developers.

It gutted the developers It got leaked and the community tore it to shreds, leaving the devs crushed and wondering if their efforts where waisted, the project a fail. There have been cases of games being cancelled when being leaked and mario + rabbids could have easily been one of em.

its just gonna end up with more and more secrecy and big players leaving E3 behind and host their own online reveal events like Nintendo

As a developer I would love to be more transparent and open with our community from the very beginning, showing the cool stuff we are working on and the great ideas we have, but unfortunately the general gaming community has gotten even more toxic over the last 10 years that I don't see it happening.. ever.

Boiling point. It has always been an issue, this year it reached a point and became an actual discussion that should have been had a long time ago so maybe this site and the other one would not go as far as verifying leakers and giving them a legitimate platform. edit: not saying resetera is the only place, there is twitter, 4chan, and many others, so if someone wants to leak it will happen, but verifying leakers to have their thread is def an encouragement to the practice of seeking out and leaking information.

bullshots and false promises? have you seen Puddlegate? this is the community that will be respectful to transparent development and wont make conclusions based of every new piece of footage. (cutting a character from the game - "omg, I think the game is doomed!")?

Making games is incredibly messy and chaotic, Its not a linear process like making a movie. Project shift in minor details to large parts like scope or genre throughout its development just to chase that early core concept that started this mad journey of making a game. As developers this is simply the process of making a game because halfway within development there is a big risk that whatever you are making isnt fun to play and you have to reshuffle it to make it work You really think this cut throat community would respect that transparency when they expect games to release within a year or two of its initial reveal? Games take longer to make and are more complex than ever. We tear games apart for "downgrading" or making minor changes from when its first revealed. So imagine amplifying that by being more transparent. Again first impressions are everything and the earlier you show stuff and the more transparent you are the higher the chance that major things will shift from first reveal to final product and imagine the backlash if a certain character gets cut entirely or a whole story arch gets rewritten that has been shown off in the beginning.

That honestly is the most depressing about this whole ordeal, reading the comments of people who would not give a second thought what leaking does to developers. Is it life threatening, no, but it messes with actual people spending years pouring their hearts and souls into making a product, just to have it thrown on the internet often without proper context with the effort of writing a goddamn tweet. edit:In that case it was a wish fulfillment and in general I feel Nintendo fans are a little more relaxed when it comes to these things But still that is one of the rare examples.

Have a look how we generally feel about this and come back informed. but in a nutshell, no. We all work hard to show off our game in the best most optimal way and if that gets ruined by a leak its immensely demoralizing Take Mario + Rabbids for example. it got leaked and the community tore it to shreds, leaving the devs crushed and wondering if their efforts where waisted, the project a fail. While in reality what they where making was legitimatly a great game but got undercut and put to risk by leaks. We craft reveals to show off the concept of the game in the best way since its a first look and in this market the first impressions are everything. Its very easy to get a wrong impression, especially since game concepts have become pretty complex in order to stand out from everybody else. How you think Ninja theory feels by seeing their trailer for Bleeding Edge shown in horrible off camera quality without sound and the community tearing it to shreds. There is a reason developers fear dealing with the community since they are vicious and can destroy years of hard work in a heartbeat just because the way the game has been introduced to them.

Look at Death stranding. we had a Trailer before they even started production and people have been on and on complaining that its taking so long. Games take 3 to 4 times as long to make as a movie and gamers are super impatient. That's why you see reveal trailers one year before the game comes out (most of the time) and before that its a secret for good reasons because our attention spans only last that long. Tie this into making games to be way harder than making movies, where when making a game you have no clue how the game is until you are at the last few months of development and everything suddenly clicks together. Movies are a linear process. you have a script, a story board, you shoot the scenes, then you edit the scenes together with music and effects to enhance the shots and in the end you have that A to B experience for an hour and a half. With games you have a core concept of the type of game you want to make. you write a story (or not) that you think enhances that game play, but game play in its rough form (prototype) might have all the ingredients but only until you have the art, the story, the characters the music, effects etc.. only until those things are in place you get a sense of.. yes this works. The god of war reveal was a great moment since even when you assumed it was god of war and there where rumors, but to have kratos appear from the shadows and after that dive straight into gameplay was a great E3 moment. Those reactions to a live reveal are huge huuuuuge motivators to the team back home where all their years of doubt are confirmed to pay off and now they need to make the promise work for the final product. I want to see the live reaction of a trailer, not have it leaked days before from some shitty off cam shot (Bleeding Edge for example) with shitty sound quality or no sound at all. Game developers craft their experience to the player from the earliest game reveal until you complete the game. These teams spend years and years crafting this narrative to the player ONTOP of actually making a game, and it should not be ruined by others who for them it takes no effort than to type a few words, be this leaks or spoilers.
