Thread Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Remakes Announced for Nintendo Switch, Launching WW in late 2021
oef that artstyle is.. rough. the "Lets go" games are the best looking ones on switch and I simply do not understand why it cant just look like that. the battle characters look okayish, although the rendering is incredibly flat, while the overworld chibi figures are pretty bad looking. I understand maybe trying that faithful recreation, but it simply does not look good. .. Legends is in the same park as this as far as I am concerned. somehow they peaked in their 3d artstyle with the lets go games and now its slowly going down hill. new pokemon snap is the best looking game they showed today.

Thread Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation and Discussion |OT|: "Now You're Playing with Super Power!"
Yeah no, I am not buying into the switch 4k name, it sounds too techy and too serious. I am pretty sure its gonna be either super or advanced, since I am also sure it will be a bit more than just a resolution and performance boost. I cant imagine them not adding some sort of extra gimmick to this one to define its use case further. edit [ God forbid they might even ditch it being portable for this one, since the light is portable only. Maybe this one might even just be a new dock, with a new screen model alongside with equivalent power of the old switch model with a better screen and form factor and battery life, but you would be able to dock your old switch in it too and it will be able to take over rendering fully instead of it relying on the device itself. ] edit2 [ since the dock kind of constraints the thickness of the switch, I can imagine it needing a new dock for the new model. I just dont see them have you throw out your old model entirely, but for that to work they really need to improve having multiple switches support on a more account / save data technical level ] Switch advance makes the most sense, while personally as a nostalgic factor I would love for it to be called a switch super or super nintendo switch even tho its a bit of a funny mouth feel when saying it.

Lets not try to think up thick conspiracy webs around CDPR and this hack The damage has been done, so soon CDPR, like other companies that have fallen victim to these attacks, will see their information posted online in big data dumps up for grabs, and potentially selling personal employee information to whoever wants it.I highly doubt personal motives are what drives these hacks. Its usually companies that are in the public eye so they can do as much damage as possible in order to get as much money as possible. This isnt some robin hood scheme, this is a highly criminal act with data up for grabs of 1100 employees/freelancers and other companies that have worked with CRPR

Thread Why doesn't Red Letter Media get more shit?
While I loved those channels, I think Red Letter Media deserves a spot on YouTube for genuine insightful movie reviews. Sure their sense of humor is quite dated since they are a bunch of 30 to 40 year old's doing the same skit they did 10 years ago, and their older videos obviously haven't aged well since they where made 10 fucking years ago when things where a little bit different, but they have matured in recent years. Also their reviews are actually good unlike most other YouTube reviewers who either go way too far into pretentiousness, or are so obnoxious in their personality presenting their case for or against a film that I cant stand it. RLM is pretty much a bunch if cynical old bastards reviewing movies and highlighting the shit wrong with modern cinema and I enjoy them for that since I can relate, as I to am a cynical old bastard tired with modern cinema.

Thread A stranger throws their bagged dog poop into your trash bin - is it rude?
my situation it different then yours. I live in an small apartment complex where the bins stand in the front yard in a special bin designated spot. anyone can just walk by and throw their stuff in if they want. for poop I do not care, it was a different matter when some asshat drove by with their car, opened up the back and offloaded their trash in the bins filling them so nobody else could put their trash in. I had to keep my trash bag of weekly garbage in my kitchen for a week which resulted in the bins filling up super quick the weeks after since we all now had two weekly bags of garbage. on the other hand, it was a week of keeping my garbage inside which is better than the guy chucking it in a park which I have also seen happen. I rather have a little bit of inconvenience than seeing it in the park so yeah.

People thinking Martin doesn't have a rough outline including the ending is insane. As a writer you don't wing it from page to page. he has an ending and plotline for the books established years before the first episode of the TV show was even produced. No way do you write a series of books like that without it, and I am pretty sure HBO had those for the show. Biggest problem they had is that the tv show should have been 3 seasons longer for sure to establish those plotlines better in the show.

Fuck yeah he would have been there, you think these people have been coerced? all of them entered that building freely willingly under the trump banner. Would he have entered it if he would be alone? I am pretty sure he would have stopped if he was a mob of one. I think the problem you have is that you think those people are mentally ill. Wake up call, the MAGA hatters are your neighbors, your religious leaders, your family members, your colleagues, your local supermarket clerk, your small business owner. these people ARE America and have been America for a looong long time. They have been waiting for a person like trump to legitimize their ideals that they feel have been oppressed for generations and its gonna get a lot worse before its gonna get better. anyway, to not derail it any further. All military fantasy games play into the militia power fantasy, especially post apocalyptic ones where the evil government has been fallen and its up to the man with the gun, to save the day. Do I think it plays into the MAGA fantasy? well it plays into a lot of right wing ideals, but I think you have shooter fans that enjoy warfare fiction or post apocalyptic what if scenarios on both sides of the fence and that is perfectly fine.

Thread EPIC Games acquires Cary Towne Center, a 980.000ft²/~91.000m² shopping mall in Cary, NC, to be company's New HQ ; Full conversion to end by 2024.
Its gonna be a campus so I am sure they will have company apartments for onboarding. Its usually very hard and stressful to find a space to live when you move to another country so its nice to give new employees a space to live while they figure out a place for their own. I can see this dramatically cutting back the time you need to get up and running which is important for a company. Where I work we have company apartments all over the city, these are all small apartments we can live in for free for up to 3 months while you look for your own space and it made the onboarding process a breeze. I could just focus on the game and the work and the team while I could take the time to look for a place to live. plus I could use the 3 months rent I did not have to pay to build up a small financial buffer to make the rent down payment. I am not a huge epic games supporter in the last few years as they went from doing some really cool project to 100 percent fortnite and going power hungry, but having spaces for employees to relieve the stress they still get when working normal hours is just good. You can see it as BS to keep employees working over hours and I am 100 percent sure epic still has crunch, but its also just nice as an employee to have the ability to do some non work activities while still be able to get back to work easily by having a lot of things in the same building. employees can still go somewhere else for lunch if they want to. its just easier to cut on commute and things like that. There are so many pros and cons to having a company campus, to not having one, to working at home. You cant just call it a company gotcha to keep ppl there since everybody is different. For example working from home is almost the same thing. Sure you work at home but then you also combine home with work, so you spend more time working. Its easier to keep working a few hours extra since you cut out on commute, you are in your comfy space, just work until you go to bed and I see nobody complaining about companies trying to go full working from home. Companies profit a lot from working from home. they don't need to spend millions of dollars a year on working space, electricity, water, food, they can just offload that all on the employees.

Thread Why are games so afraid of using colored button prompts in their UIs?
mainly for accessibility reasons since it would be more contrasted against any possible background, and also because it usually looks better. Also sometimes colors are used within the UI design to mean specific things like danger or health and so the controller prompts should not interfere with that. Its just better to go monochrome with a position relative to the other buttons. I think Breath of the wild did that nicely. It shows the button in white, but also its location on the numpad or dpad.

Good constructive post. For me yes, I prefer the simplified weapons, but that does not mean I wanted left 4 dead with prettier graphics. for me the strength of left4dead is its AI director and I think you can do extremely cool things once you would wrap your head around how it could be used. More then just different items scattered at different places and opening different rooms and spawning of AI like Left4blood, I think they could have expanded on it by adding different pathways trough a map, having events happen that create memorable moments and would drive a narrative like having side objectives that would give you more to do than run from a to b every match. Valve started experimenting with that stuff in left 4 dead 2 when you would have to grab a six pack of coke for witaker, the gunshop owner who would in return of the six pack allow you to help yourself to his weapons and also blow up a tanker which blocked off your route to the mall. While that is something that happened on the main route in left 4 dead 2 you can see the potential of those things being side objectives that would open up a shortcut, or allow you access to more weapons or items. I think the AI director is the special sauce and here it again feel very underwhelming.

I agree. I mean its obviously people will compare it to left 4 dead, which had really good pacing. I really think it is sometimes tough to find loot since the amount of special effected being thrown at you at a given time. At one time we hade 2 tall boys, 2 boomers. some spitters and a ogre rampaging trough the map in the middle of a horde that got triggered by a shreeker mere seconds before which was unavoidably placed. obviously we had no chance to survive that and it really felt like the system fucked us in the ass, since additionally to that, we just got from another big battle and there was no decent amount of loot to properly restock. Especially when most people start out with the same guns in the beginning, the ak's and then the rifle ammo loot table should be increased dramatically which it did not. edit: after playing a few rounds with friends yesterday, it was a lot of fun and it brought up the same kind of memes as from left 4 dead when you have one random who just sprints out of the door, going full ham and he triggers every horde spawning alarm under the sun

Thread Back 4 Blood New Details & Alpha Thread - 8 Playable Characters, The Ridden, Game Director Details, & Card System with Roguelike Elements
Card system is super confusing. In l4d everything you did was within the match. from switching weapons to gathering ammo. lots of that is still there but now there is a card system that modifies your stats. like makes you more resistant to fire. essentially what that means is that your base character without those things just kinds sucks. and you really need to get into that system to feel more resilient to the challenges the game throws at you. what that also means is that the enemies are just a bit tougher than you are capable of handling without having any cards. meaning again you are forced to dive into the card system. but because enemies are just a bit tougher also means you really slay trough ammo dealing with the hordes and special infected. ammo is something that can seem rare, but that is because your team mates are probably gobbling it up right in front of you. In l4d you had infinite pools of ammo at places so everybody could quickly restock making sure everybody is at the same level before being served the next challenges. This type of refueling is now gone and you find pockets of ammo from dead zombies or locations. but once you restock from that ammo you remove it, so loot goblins can really fuck over their team. Also you now have a basic inventory screen which allows you to drop ammo and stuff for your teammates. but its kinds hidden and I have not seen anyone really use it. again its an extra band aid layer for a mechanic that I think doesn't fit this type of game. Left 4 dead made it possible to easily play with randoms when you are just doing a casual round, but now you really need good teammates otherwise it can really feel like a drag. at least this has been my experience, curious to read other peoples opinion. Its def a lot slower and hardcore take on the old l4d formula.

I mean.. yikes. I played a few rounds and will play a few more, and I will have to gather my thoughts about this afterwards but first impression is not good. The way they deal with weapons, ammo and health in this game is a far cry from the simple effective system l4d had. It makes me feel like Valve had a lot of positive influence in the development of left 4 dead and now turtle rock is doing it on their own, they really are missing the valve sauce that just makes it fun to play. All the ingredients are there, its just coated in an incredibly tedious and frustrating sauce of systems and hurdles. nothing feels intuitive and in the intensity of the match it just translates into frustration for me.

Those games are fun for sure but they limit what you can do in those spaces in terms of gameplay and experiences. Thread DF: Halo Infinite Gameplay Reveal Analysis: Are The Graphics Really Flat?
sure, I see what you are quoting there, in a perfect situation when you aim for photorealism, a well implemented PBR pipeline where your lighting is physically accurate and your materials are, then it will look good no matter what. even in that specific lighting situation. The problem here is that they are not going for realism here. they are going for a stylisation, where as I said they have less detail overall. less contrast in their albedo maps, their models are clean simplified shapes. etc. Combine this with super simplified lighting, using lightprobes for GI and such where your lighting detail is dependent on geometry, you end up with what we see here under these lighting conditions. That said, yess the lighting is a poor choice for this demo. a more direct midday sun would have made everything look a ton better. and raytraced GI could alleviate some of those problems when you do have those twilight situations, since time of day is dynamic in infinite. Raytraced shadows would also be fantastic as it would give you more finely grained shadowing on models. but we have no clue what will be raytaced. It could simply just be reflections and then you are still left the main issue. Now if they would have created this artstyle with a full raytracing setup in mind, its baffling to me why it would be a post launch patch (how far post launch is again unknown) so I don't buy it. in my eyes its an artstyle choice that happens to looks even worse when in certain lighting conditions.
Published

(40785465)

Thread DF: Halo Infinite Gameplay Reveal Analysis: Are The Graphics Really Flat?
PBR isnt dependent on raytracing, we have had PBR pipelines for a while now and it works great with all kinds of lighting setups. be it raytraced, baked or whatever you throw at it. PBR means that you setup your materials with real world values so you can more accuratly represent real world materials properties. when you combine this with a physically accurate lighting setup (can be baked/raytrace/dynamic or whatever) it will look realistic no matter what. In this case the problem is the art style, not the pipeline. edit:most of the problems you see are partly because of the unfortunate lighting choice for that demo, but mostly for the fact that they went for a deliberate, conscious decision to go with a more simplified art style with less focus on textures and more focus on big readable shapes and values and silhoettes. Its an art style problem mainly. edit2: They took the combat evolve look which was mostly defined due to its technical limitations, and they expanded it with the same restrictions or choices but in a higher resolution game with modern rendering techniques. so you get a very arcady, clean and simplified look, with everything having simple and readable shapes, values and silhouettes, which is great for MP games, but it doesn't look very impressive when you are thinking about a halo Single player game
Published

(40757706)

Thread DF: Halo Infinite Gameplay Reveal Analysis: Are The Graphics Really Flat?
So from my understanding the problem is two fold 1. The art style 2. the technical choices made in combination with that artstyle. Its is clear that they are going for a very Halo 1 combat evolved look, back to the roots so to say. That is all cool, but with that they took the combat evolve look which was mostly defined due to its technical limitations, and they expanded it with the same restrictions or choices but in a higher resolution game with modern rendering techniques. This means that the models look very clean, simplified, and almost cartoony. (a bit brutal but almost like Disney Infinity's stylisation of realistic characters) The models are styled in a very simplistic readable way, with big solid patches of values, and simple recognizable silhouettes which is great for game play, but usually only done in multiplayer games where readability and ability to identify enemies from backgrounds is key. This is def not a great choice when you are injecting it into a single player open world game where you want to be engulfed into the mystery of this big world The problem the artstyle creates is that everything looks like its straight out of the factory, with many of the detail not found in the diffuse channels but more in the normal/roughness and metalness maps. These are all very deliberate choices and where made to support an art style and lighting improvements will only be able to push it that far. Another thing, are the choice for the look of the underlying halo structure. Using those vertical hexagonal pillars makes everything look like straight out of minecraft and does not do the game any favors! To me it looks like a way to not having to deal with the broken sections of the halo ring and its for sure an easy way to deal with borders of gameplay spaces. now again the art style is not the main problem. it becomes a problem when you place, it as Alex points out, in a lighting solution that can not play well with these assets and this art style. This kind of indirect lighting can make detailed models look flat and uniformly lit, but then think what that does to an art style that doubles down on that simplified combat evolved look. Its gonna look very unimpressive. So what can be done as a solution? Better lighting would def help and additionally, this kind of twilight lighting will only be there in short segments of the game. Since it has full day and night cycles, Most of the time it will either be day, or night. Unfortunately nothing can be done about the artstyle this late in development. as I said, its a deliberate and very conscious choice they made very early in development.

Thread Gaming: console at 4K vs PC at 1440p?
there is a reason many of us are a bit confused with your question. You mention a 4k TV but you do not want to use it.. instead you only have a PC with a 1440p monitor.. so why mention the TV at all if you do not want to hook a console up to your TV? Why not just buy a 4k HDR 144hz monitor and give yourself the flexibility to hook up a console on it or a computer? Or are you trying to decide between buying a console or a new PC? if that is the question then its depends on what you play. Do you prefer performance? do you play competitive games where that 144hz really makes a difference? If you don't care about performance and want pretty pictures, buy a console and buy a 4k HDR monitor. but it might be a good idea to also make sure its a 144hz monitor too to give you the flexibility later on when you do want to upgrade that PC. you know its not a terrible thing to still run 1440p on a 4k monitor. even though it can support higher. with a PC you have that flexibility. edit:naturally the console output will look better on the 4k HDR oled. HDR, with better blacks etc. then it will on your 1440p monitor. but since the oled is not an option to use in your example then why even bring it up?

Just because the voices are loud in a niche community doesn't mean its loud for Sony. and on edit2: Don't assume its next to no effort to implement when it seems easy to your ears. Plenty of easy sounding things in hardware and software development are much harder to do than you think. Xbox has had it since they switched over to a branch of windows for their OS, with windows having that support for ages being a PC OS which has new resolutions coming out of the ears every day. If it would not be for windows OS to be used on the Xbox consoles, I doubt xbox would have supported 1440p since it is not a TV standard resolution.

Thread If you could choose which game Valve to make next, which one?
I have spent more time into left 4 dead 1 and 2 than I have in any other valve IP. Single players are nice and all but are brief experiences. I think valve has what it takes to take the Left 4 dead IP and turn it into a multiplayer experience that feels more like a single player/co-op experience that change every time you play. the way they did Left 4 dead already touched the tip of that iceberg, I just want to see more of the possibility exposed.

Just speaking words of caution here. They might not track it now, but the potential amount of data a single headset can transmit Realtime is worth a lot of money to a company like Facebook and they have never shown to be particularly transparent. Well the art styles have largely remained the same, and its just technical ability of the console driving higher resolutions etc. We will see 4k "next gen" visuals with those styles in either the switch 2 or whatever other system they are cooking up. especially since 4k is quickly becoming a standard. But if you think we are gonna see something that will compete with the series x or PS5, hahahah, no. edit: and I don't see a reason to. chasing that is expensive and for very little results. I doubt the switch would have been 10 times more popular if it was competing with the big 2. People buy nintendo for the nintendo magic. Fun polished games that are for everyone.

From a creative standpoint I can see them having put a lot of their energy and a lot of their creative ideas in part 2, and I think it would be very healthy to take a step back and focus on a new project before revisiting that world. From a business standpoint, part 2 did very well and talks about a part 3 would def be on the table, but you can risk starving the project creatively by jumping into a part 3 any time soon. In the end people make these games and any studio worth its salt takes that into account in any business decision, or else you will bleed talent.

Its a great story and you will def see more ghosts and silhouettes scattered around as you progress trough the episodes. I do prefer the first episode of season one as it kind of throws you in and keeps your attention until the last episode, while the first episode of season 2 is a very slow start and classic introduction that works better in a movie, but stick with it! Thread What kind of art style do you want to see from Street Fighter VI?
Actually its not. People look at faces and hands mostly, and in fighting games there is the importance of feet as well and having those stick out helps with readability immensely. That is the reason why the feet and hands are so large, so they can support more visual distracting costumes, detailed backgrounds and on screen flair while still have your moves readable. The big hand and feet are there to cut trough all the possible visual clutter this game might have. Now in the case of streetfighter its not just having bigger hands and feet, they double down on it by having contrasting gloves or skin tone Versus clothing color and value to visually separate fists and feet from the rest of the character, and those who are based on classic looks do a much better job at this. You could argue, why not reduce visual clutter, and I do think that Street fighter over delivers on visual clutter. I think it has massive readability issues, but that's a style choice they made pretty early on and nobody is perfect and I would like to see massive readability improvements made in the next installment. edit: just to make clear, I agree with you when you take it as an excuse and try to dissolve criticism by saying, well its because of this and Capcom is god that's why. If you have a balanced visual game where you support gameplay by having readable graphical styles (part style, part character design), then you don't need to overdo it with those elements.

are you joking? Sony bought insomniac for Ratchet and Clank and Spiderman after they gave a game to Microsoft, and the result is there as it being one of the prominent IP's shown around the PS5. Insomniac has a track record of making solid games based on their own created IP's all the way back from the PS1 era and them being willing to shop around and having no qualms to go with Microsoft is one of the reasons Sony was looking to acquire insomniac Bluepoint for all their worth have yet to develop an IP of their own future proofing their studio. They need an IP they developed from scratch that adds more value to their company, and heck maybe even doing a few remakes for Microsoft Its the same with jobs, only when people notice you are looking around at other companies are they usually able to see your value and are willing to meet your demands.

Popping the question makes sense if the studio has an amazing original IP that adds to the PlayStation library, although I am sure after demon souls they might get the chance from Sony to build something of their own. That will be the make or break moment for them. Before that I simply don't see the value in a company that does remakes. In the ends Sony is interested in IP's and the only thing Blue Point has is talent and this talent is easily poachable and very little worth for a company like Sony again you need an original IP, since those last beyond that specific talent and are of actual value.

Thread Will Stadia weather the storm of the new generation?
Stadia has a lot of potential, especially now Digital only versions of the big 2 are a thing from launch. Moving into a digital only future will def be a thing for the mainstream gamers once internet speeds get much better for a lot more users. Unfortunately this project was launched undercooked and is obviously led by someone who has their head deep within their own ass and consistently making the wrong decisions. Even in the current console landscape it would be something that people would check out and probably use if they would have done a Netflix style subscription that has payment tiers for different resolutions and do frequent updates to their library. Additionally there is still no system seller exclusive and that should have be a thing at LAUNCH! Now the Xbox and PS5 are on the horizon with competitive prices, they are running circle around whatever Stadia is doing right now and I think the best thing they could do is go back to the drawing board, let the tech mature behind the scenes, get a few exclusive games in development and rebrand it and do a proper Release. No weird beta programs or whatever.

additionally epic doesn't argue is should be lower, epic argues that there should be none. Again epic on purpose argues on false pretenses that the app store is just a transaction processing app, just like it argues steam is just a launcher, and absolutely ignores that the app store is part of a full closed platform with its own unique computing device OS and platform, and that steam is far more than just a launcher which provides free of charge various services to its customers, both consumers and developers enjoy without restriction. You might not use these features or find them necessary for you, but you are free to buy your software from say EGS where you get that bare bones "only a launcher" experience, and there is nothing wrong with that choice. Except epic takes any opportunity to do a smear campaign in order to make themselves look better and get customers for its own benefit. what epic is arguing is that they do not need to pay rent to a building that apple built and services and that apple is not allowed to evict epic when they willfully breach contract by sub renting its apartment, and then argue that apple should allow epic to hijack the building to do its own renting business without them having to pay apple anything for use of the building. Thread Has Epic’s recent (Fortnite) stunts soured you on EGS?
Pretty much my stance on this as well. They have a fantastic engine that keeps pushing the limits, but Epic itself as a company has proven to be nothing more than money hungry and is willing to lie and twist to get what they want. You see it in how they tried getting attention for EGS, and now fortnite with the apple lawsuit. They don't really care about anyone but themselves in these endeavors, no matter what they tell you, and in the end they do more damage than good. The 12/88 cut is not sustainable for any "launcher" that is not as bare-bones as EGS. It is all good if you don't really care for developer friendly features and really just want nothing more than a launcher that gives you free games and exclusives. But for epic to claim that steam, which is a full feature rich platform that offers their developers a lot of value for their 30% cut, is somehow the enemy and should be brought to their knees is ridiculous. Same goes for their apple lawsuit, creating a problem and then claiming to be the victim with a hashtag, short video and a whole marketing smear campaign ready to go and claims to be fighting for the little guy is extremely dishonest. Its interesting that as soon as they found themselves to become a multi-billion dollar company because of fortnite, they abandoned all interesting projects like UT and Paragon and now focus only on getting more and more money with whatever scheming ways they can think of.

Especially when you have no oversight about your peers and how much they make and you think, well I guess this is how it is since there is no industry like the game industry, it has many highs and many lows. This is not the case for any of the other roles in game development, all those roles you conveniently ignore. The only result you are achieving is derailing the thread with unreliable research to push a fake news narrative under the disguise of "I just want to check it for myself". all the figures you quote from glassdoor are wildly inaccurate and often inflated by the companies themselves who put down anonymous salary quotes or company reviews to make their companies look better since they know people do check places like glassdoor to give them ballparks. It is actually impossible to fact check this since there is no reliable source of information except those people who are willing to give you their true salaries, and good luck in that industry wide adventure.

Its fine to say that when its any other job where you have multiple companies in almost every city in the world. but the game industry isnt build like that. Its an industry that is extremely hard to get into. saying, just dont work there is an incredibly stupid take when there is only one blizzard. This, senior engineers can make much more in any other company, but there is only one game industry so people take much more abuse, like being overworked, crunch, underpaid and being force to live in expensive hub cities. but at no point is that an excuse for that abuse especially when the industry is as profitable as it is

Its highly frustrating as a developer to read backseat researchers with the power of google and a free 5 minutes to try and "validate" data that has been a problem in the industry forever and is especially a problem in cities with insane costs of living. It is especially frustrating when we are in your eyes not even a developer. how about you first establish the ground rules, and research into what developers actually are and what kind of jobs it consists off before you dig into trying to "validate" reports. the only thing you doing is taking a very narrow look into an industry and base everything on that. is that how you do all your research? I apologize if my frustration is a little transparent, I just want you to do a better job at what you are trying to do in threads like these maybe I expect too much of a person who works in a field that pays well north of 6 figures.

There maaaybe a discrepancy? maybe if you stop looking at senior software engineers and take a more grounded approach. senior software engineers make up a small portion of gamedevelopers. it takes a whole much more to make a game than software engineers. If you would have actually taken an honest look at trying to verify the accuracy of the article, you would have taken much better data as your argument.

It had the potential to polish and deal with some lighting issues that are part of what makes things look flat, but even that said, there are so many unknows around the raytracing post launch patch. is it a day 1 patch? what kind of raytracing implementation? only reflection pass? shadows? I am pretty sure they are trying to make the case that cyberpunk is political within its own fictional bubble, but does not deal with real world politics. I personally think that is a very bizarre look on the cyberpunk genre since its always had a narrative on current politics, it just happens that the political situations never really changed. it was shit in the 80's and its shit now, so a lot of the cyberpunk genre is still very relevant.

Thread Graphic Fidelity I Expect Next Gen.
You might get a game with this, but don't count on many games pulling this off. A. these things are very dependent on pipeline and artist ability, not all studios are made equal. This guy has incredible experience working with photogrammetry assets, something even naughty dog isn't doing. B. Getting this kind of fidelity up is incredibly expensive. even working with packs like quixel, those packs simply don't cover the amount needed for a full game. C. All of this might run real time, but this is without any game code at all. Adding things like AI, physics, game logic, etc. kills performance drastically Combine this with these demos being very large in size, which is why a lot of these cool movies of guys making cool scenes in UE4 is something that is possible real time, but you wont see for a while in an actual full game also what you see there is rendered in engine in UE4, but there is no info to what the frame rate this runs realtime and at what resolution, so that is on PC with a beefy card most likely, and is as I said before without any game code stealing performance underneath. and no the video is not representative to real time, its a trailer made in the UE4 sequence editor and exported via the High Quality Media Export which then renders either frames or full video at whatever setting you like in high quality.

To me its kinda bizarre that they invest so much money in developing a monster of a console! and then decide to not use that power in pushing their platforms. Their philosophy in not caring about generations feels alien next to that beefy console. Everything we saw we can play on PC from day one and a lot of it was cross-gen and I am really scratching my head why I would invest in an Xbox console at this point. the Xbox brand to me feels its now more in the publishing business than it is to sell consoles. there feels a certain, internal divide to what the strategy should be.

And I prefer Halo 3 artstyle wise, it had textures, Halo infinite gives the appearance of single colored objects. Also the trailer was just a cutscene and then an A to B walk to a tower. and nothing interesting happened in between except for some fights. but none of the set pieces looks interesting, I didn't see cool forerunner structures with tons of mystery. A vertical slice is not a target render. A vertical slice is a section of a game that provides insight how the rest of the game might look, play and feel like before you expand it to multiple areas. Its def just a vertical slice. there wont be much more beyond what you see in this demo, maybe some exploration of mechanics that wont go further than white box in a separate demo. It also seems this demo was slowly transformed into ghost, so in the end its a natural step where you try something, you think you might have it, but then realize something is missing or doesn't work and you will have to readjust until it does. Def far more leaning towards johnny mnemonic and stuff like that, altho the first trailer was def in its very early stages. Little advice, when you see CG trailers for games, its never gonna be like that in the final game. especially when that game will take yeaaars and years of development. better just take the trailer and enjoy it and not expect anything to come from it. this goes with almost anything in life. you are owed nothing, and expectations only lead to dissapointment. since life never follows whats in your head.

Thread What would it take for a new console competitor to be successful?
At this point I don't think its possible and would def not make any sense from a financial stand point. first of all, You would have to be super aggressively push yourself into the market, and on purpose be willing to loose hefty amounts of money in the first generation of the new console just to undercut the competition. second, You wouldn't need to be stronger in performance since its really not gonna make third parties target your console, also why make it harder for devs. makes no sense. more performance than xbox would be a waste of money. the performance race is a fools race. instead stick close to the big 2 and lower cost. and third you have to have some really compelling launch titles that make people want to buy your hardware, again you would have to buy studios or build them up from scratch years in advance and go trough a lengthy development process. And you would have to create a brand that resonates with gamers. Xbox is such a brand, Playstation is such a brand. all in all its a waste of money, since the returns will def not make up for the huge loss you take just getting into this industry. And even all that does not guarantee smart decisions, just look at google with stadia. they pretty much did everything wrong from the start and in my opinion didnt even seriously try even tho it could have worked. If they would have compelling next gen launch titles. clear communication, and a netflix style model, I think it would have turned out different for them.

That has very little to do with the engine and more to do with the art itself. A 1080p machine and a 4k machine makes a lot of sense, and as long as they can match visual quality across the board, which it should be able to I think these are great options for consumers. Especially since the 1080p version can be sold for much cheaper. BUT that said, at no point should MS then meddle with the resolution. Lock lockheart to 1080p and Series X to 4k. Don't try to blend in between and mess with 1440p or the lack of power on lockheart will really tear into performance. Even when it should be possible to push to 1440p, its better for clarity sake to cap it at 1080p and have the performance buffer it has deal with framerate stability. I very much expect lockheart to tear into the scene at 299, and I am also pretty sure it will be branded similarly to the series X. where they can say, you can get a new next gen xbox for as little as 299. I expect series X to tie with PS5 at 499 and the PS5DE will be the SKU that sony will try to take a revenue hit on by pricing it at 399, even tho the lack of a blueray drive isnt that expencive. the Digital Edition is the best chance sony has to stay competitive with Xbox when they need it. Then they would sit right in between the series X and lockheart, providing full PS5 performance for a competitive price. They could still lower the Ps5 to 449 if they need it I feel. Sony has been very tight lipped about their pricing, and people expect its only because of bad news. But you should not forget that MS hasn't laid all their hands on the table yet and Sony is very much still in the price race when it comes to strategy

It went from being a very ambitious game coming from a super small team (6 ppl) coming out of nowhere, with a super effective hype trailer that blew peoples expectations trough the roof, to having to ship the game far earlier than it was supposed to, to it being rightfully trashed when the 60 dollar game was an equivalent to buying a product and receiving a box with a brick instead. A story of a down and trodden studio, who at that point, instead of taking the cash and run, invested that cash into the game and actually after months and years of incredibly hard work and dedication delivering what was promised and then some! and they are still going strong adding new content to the game. its something that should be taught in school to anyone wanting to make games.

Serious question tho, how many eyeballs do you think an indie game gets in these shows? you get a demo, or a trailer for a minute or so, and then its on to the next game, by the time the next game is on display, the previous game is already forgotten. we had 3 massive indie game events on one day June 13th PC game show - 52 games shown in 75 minutes Future game show - 35 games shown in 80 minutes Guerrilla Collective day 1 - 44 games shown in 90 minutes then on the 14th Guerrilla Collective day 2 - 69 games shown in 120 minutes that is 200 games in two days.. how much exposure do you think a game will get when its thrown at you like this. There is no talk on any of these games because you need to watch a boringly presented show that is an hour to two hours long and you are lucky that you find a game you get interested in. its an overload to the viewer. I watched one of the easy allies reaction streams of one of these events and afterwards they maybe had one or two games they could talk about in a recap and they had issues even talking about those since it was such a dump of games (not in quality, but in load) that gets thrown at you.

From my experience, peer reviews are never there for your benefit, they are only there to give the company excuses not to promote you, or to keep paying you the same wage, so I would def dig into any negative point you receive and look out for yourself more. Don't flat out lie about your own performance, but def don't play yourself by thinking things like .. "well I did great on this, but I don't want to brag, I am humble, so lets put it on average instead of above average". I see too many people score themselves lower than they should with these systems, and if they then don't have a manager to back them up, any negative point of feedback from others can really kill you. companies take these reviews way more serious than seeing you actually do a good job on the work floor on a day by day basis.

While that is always cool and all, in reality it is simply not fun. The ideal team sizes in BF3 and 4 on the full large maps where 32 or up to 48 players. go above that and the game becomes frustrating where you get shot from every angle and is just pure chaos. So if you suddenly want 128 players you will need a map that is at least twice as big as the biggest maps in battlefield. while that again cool, it brings with it maaaany downsides like: more vehicle combat, bigger combat effectiveness gap between vehicle and infantry combat. vehicle becoming mandatory to move around effectively, making it annoying to be stuck without one.

I still think there are plenty of people wanting to dip into interactive entertainment but dont want to buy hardware, its just that the way google set up their service was a huge mistake. You need to set it up in a way like netflix does, with a base subscription and a library that you can then play for free. nobody want to pay for a service (I am aware there is a free option) streaming and then have to shell out full price for titles that they can already buy for their PS4 and xbox. Besides that google simply fucked up with mixed messaging, a bad strategy, and a veeeery minimal effort put into pulling people in by serving customers games they can already play on other platforms, at the end of a console generation when most people already dipped into a PS4 and xbox. They should have waited with this until this year and then drop in right between MS and Sony and offer next gen titles on a netflix style service. 20 to 30 bucks a month subscription but play next gen titles on any device you want. Thread Should video game remakes/reboots change the ethnicity of the main character?
I think its fully into the developers hands, if they want to do that, then fine. While I strongly agree we should have more diverse game characters, its simply not smart to force it onto reboots or remakes because you will receive a strong rejection from people who are greatly and emotionally attached to a franchise who would reject any major change in the game, let alone its cast because of that strong nostalgic feeling. And you can respect that or not, the fact is that there is a strong industry around that, which is why we see so many games getting ported, remade, etc to new systems. I think adding a more diverse cast is something that should be happening in the development of new IP's where you can give audiences a chance to fall in love with those character on their own merits and not because they are shoehorned into an existing product just to get a win. the industry needs to move this issue forward with new titles, not by rewriting history.

Thread Remember the Unlimited Detail engine claim by that Euclideon company, was it just a hoax?
It wasn't all bullshit, but the limitations made it def unsuitable for actual use to ship a title while making bold claims and being outright bullish towards the rest of the industry for "not seeing the light". The tech would still be useless today in video games. Sparse voxel octrees are great to show single models with insane detail, but have huge disadvantages like the way it stores data that makes it very hard to work with and is very memory intensive. Def not a technique that is ideal for interactive worlds. Its claims that it will offer "unlimited detail" was nonsense as far as I remember they simply instanced a few models and scattered them around trying to build other things with them, like bricks. While it represented a lot of geometry, good luck in trying to convince an industry to start building actual walls in games by manually placing bricks.

Its def not smoke and mirrors, and I dont see him stating that. he is saying to not expect this stuff in your games for a while since populating game worlds with the detail seen here is very hard. Especially when you dont want to use photogrammetry libraries since those libraries only cover real life items and trying to match that quality with assets that have to be build from the ground up is very work intensive, even when you dont have to make LOD's. 95% of upcoming nextgen titles will not look like that until far later in the generation. This is a look into the future how games can look with this tech and for now its exclusive to epic, and UE5. (and I say "can look" not because its technically smoke and mirrors, but the fact that creating full games with this detail is incredibly expensive, both in money and in time until the industry catches up and finds better ways to create and populate game worlds with this level of detail.) Also I can for sure tell you that the tech was on the horizon, but nobody believed any commercial engine would go there this soon. Don't expect this tech to be in any other engine any time soon.

And honestly if that was your expectation for next gen anyway, then man you will be disappointed to how 95% of next gen titles will look like. "universal Execs" that make judgements game industry wide on what to cancel or not. Ubisoft has no clue what monolith works on, or vice versa until the public sees it. It is not how it works. we don't get sneak previews on other projects from other developers. This trailer was posted on march 1st 2012, and most likely was already a few months old at this point in time, shadow of mordor started development late 2011.. so that leaves a rough 3 to 6 months of development time. your timeline makes no sense. heck if you look at the linkedin page of the 3d level artist who worked on it from 2010 to 2011, which strongly hints at the game being cancelled somewhere closely in or around 2011.. so the game was most likely cancelled before shadow of mordor even begun development.

I am sure it will match, even on PC its early days of what to get out of current RTX cards. but to expect generation leaps, raytracing at 4k, is insanity. edit: and that is what I am reading a lot here. "4k, raytracing, gonna be insane".. first of all raytracing is very resolution dependant, the higher the resulution, the more rays you need to to cast. thats why a lot of reflections are rendered at half the resolution or even lower at 1080p We are def not ready yet for 4k native raytracing any time soon, not even on PC.Also raytracing is very performance heavy. If there is heavy use of raytracing, dont expect it to run at 60 fps. thats why you will most likely see a small subset used in games. devs prefer having more stable performances. RT for shadows is a good one, or very rough fully dynamic GI. but it wont be able to compete with prebaked lighting for this generation int terms of quality and fedelity. but as I said, closed systems promote a lot of smart thinking. and I have been suprised more than once on the current generation consoles. so we will see!

You simply cannot compare it to what you get on PC right now. especially with the new Ampere GPU's coming this year, the gap will be widened even more before the console generation even begins. This is very much still a generation of rasterisation on consoles. Its gonna be interesting to see how they will use Raytracing during the console generation tho. Being an artist, especially a concept artist is a tough job, and often, even within the industry is misunderstood and not as respected. Thread Is Ray Tracing actually even worth it right now?
The point op is trying to make, if you turn off RTX.. there isn't a huge glaring difference. The problem we have now is that the game industry is built on decades of rasterisation. and until we have actual GPU's that can accelerate native raytracing and not the hybrid solutions we have now, (will take 15 years or so) there isnt a huge leap that will blow your mind. My advice is to treat RTX cards like any other GPU's on PC. and let the devs slowly deal with all the forms of hybrid raytracing and move their tools in this direction. It will get faster, the benifits will become more apparent, and the performance hit will go down as time progresses and we will get more and more hardware accelerating Raytracing. We are now at the first generation of PC GPU's that offer raytracing and many devs havent even had a thought of adding it to their games since the amount of people using RT accelerated GPU's is very low. It will take time.

Having them put swapping mods on the [R] button, conflicting with decades of Reload imprinting was a bad move but it was a minor grievance In Eternal they made only those kind of changes and I never felt more frustrated in a DOOM game than with playing Eternal. Combine this with the new mechanics that needed tutorial introductions and made the first 2 hour feel like I am a kid in school instead of the badass spacemarine DOOM 2016 let me be from the start by allowing me to figure shit out myself and find my own flow in combat.

Thread If Destiny 2 is 60fps/Upgraded on PS5/XSX, would you come back from PC?
I think it has more to do with the fact that nobody wants to play Destiny 2 PVP on PC since there are greater offerings in the Multiplayer space for PC players, and less with total userbase. For a console destiny PVP is pretty solid, but not for PC. but Destiny 2 as a whole is a pretty unique experience that PC players are happy to have added to the family. just not PVP on its own.

Thread Vanity Fair: First Look at Denis Villeneuve's DUNE [New Images]
Its things I have seen before executed differently. Solar farms, neon lit skyscrapers, 2 cars, it is visually sound and stylish, but in its essence they are boring takes, to the point where the tears in rain speech where far more visually captivating than the entire Bladerunner 2049 movie. And I don't say that as hating the movie, I don't, I think its a great film, but its not on the same level as the original Bladerunner at all. (The original bladerunner pulled that off in the 80's and 30 years later what we got is the same, and nothing more. A good take for sure, far better than any could have hoped, but not as great as it should have been.) Bladerunner and Alien where 2 movies that blew my mind as a kid to what was possible in cinema. it showed me scenes that I have never seen before. With Dune I want to see what I have not seen before, I want my eyeballs blown out of my skull. I want a movie that is that directors magnum opus, a work that is as elevated as the books where. Not just a cinematic treatment as if its just another movie on the directors list. I want a director that can deliver even a sliver of the passion and dream that Jodorowsky had for this material. Maybe I am expecting too much, but I don't think I am, not for dune. Maybe Denis can pull that off, and if he does he has my all time respect and I think the respect of all fans who love Dune. But I am lowering my expectation by a lot in terms of what to expect from Denis and this Dune movie just so I don't get massively disappointed once footage gets shown.

Thread Vanity Fair: First Look at Denis Villeneuve's DUNE [New Images]
My point was, Dune is very much in its own league and deserves a visual treatment that has something special something striking that makes it instantly recognizable as Dune, and that quality I haven't seen in any of his films except bladerunner and even there its muted and toned down. That was literally what was going trough my mind in the theaters. The most striking element in arrival where the aliens themselves and its something I have not seen before. That is all I want. show me shit that I have not seen in any other movie and then we get close to what kind of visuals dune deserves. Dune deserves to sit among giants like Alien, and honestly, I don't think Denis has what it takes to direct a feature that has that level of striking visuals.

very much so, one is a big spider, the other a big pebble. None of his works had the visual spunk that is needed for Dune, so I am hoping I will be wrong. Bladerunner was visually the most daring but even there he made the world look bleak and without life, especially compared to the original.

Thread The Last of Us Part 2 new snippet might be leaked
I read everywhere comments that make it sound like working form home suddenly will cause months and months of delays across all studios. It doesn't. In our case everything was set up in two days, maybe some more for some people with technical issues. I cannot speak for every dev or studio out there, but in the studio I work for we are seeing an increase in productivity working from home. You have to understand that most studios have open offices, meaning its a big floor with 50 or more people working in one space. things get noisy, its easy to get distracted by everybody walking around, talking to you all the time and throwing wrenches in your personal plannings Working from home has some big advantages and disadvantages strictly working, has a big advantage, since you are alone behind your computer and everything to do with work is right there instead of around you and everywhere. * You can work more focuses, less people to bother you with questions or requests or general chit chat. Also there are so many way and tools to make this process veeeery streamlined. * There are less bullshit meetings. I am not entirely sure how that happened but somehow the meetings that aren't really that important but still steal hours of your time are either now nonexistent or happen far less. * and for the post I reply to: Coordinating shit is far easier. everything is documented clearly via text, we and most studios use a wide range of communication tools besides the usual email channels. think, zoom / skype / discord, and various project management tools. one disadvantage I can see is that text to text communication isn't always the best, its easier to explain things face to face, its easier to just go over to someone and make something happen by talking to him/her face to face. It means in practice that things are a little bit less flexible, but that in general is not a huuuge problem. in the end the things that you want to get done still get done. The biggest disadvantage to working form home when there is a quarantine, is when you have a family and don't have the most private working space. and kids running around demanding your attention. you would still be a mom or a dad, and its hard to draw hard lines in the sand. but in general working from home is def not the issue most people think it is. footnote: obviously not all studios are made the same, and some have an easier and harder times with transitioning from office to home, and I speak only for my own experience. The bigger studios, 200+ are having an easier time since they have experience with dealing with freelancers that dont work inhouse and general internal company communication. when having to walk from one colleague to another in a big studio means a travel time of up to 5 or more minutes you have the tools to make communications far easier from behind your desk.

a lot of virus related media gets a watch from people during these times. I see 28 days later, contagion etc. recommended left and right, and as Eggiem states there is barely any backlash for RE3 or Half life Alyx by actual customers, instead only by a select amount of reviewers that deem it tasteless to release it during these times. A lot of businesses predict (probably more based on hope) that things will be cleared up around the end of the year, but I am 99% sure the PS5 and XsX will both be delayed to summer next year. we are talking about a few months in before they would have to ship. those that crunch at this point are programmers mostly fixing up bugs, maybe some asset tweaks by artists. but that is about it. I highly doubt an experienced team like ND who has used motioncapture did not had their motioncapture sessions done at least 6 months ago. You cant just capture and its usable instantly. it needs to be processed and this can take time. so trust me, there would not be any motion capture this late in production since you needs months work after the last session to tweak the capture and do additional animation work. Crunch is hardly ever studio wide, it affects groups at a time.

That is what you get when you are a company like valve who's main interest is to make ground breaking entertainment that always pushed the medium forward. You can't really lower the bar for yourself just to satisfy fans and I totally understand their point of view on this, every studio wants their next game to be a slam success, but often don't have the resources to cut projects that clearly don't deliver and meet their own expectations. After Episode 2 it was clear that the model wasn't working and the industry was already moving away from it. So in my mind I see them do another VR game to raise the bar even more within that medium, in combination with future headsets just to push the VR medium forward.

I am at a point where I am just before 2 hours in and thinking about refunding the game on steam. its 60 bucks for an experience that I don't enjoy. I am hearing people say it gets better mid game, and I kinda want to stick it out, but I have a hard time convincing myself to start playing again, and that in my mind isn't a great sign. At the moment I am thinking of refunding and buying it maybe a few years later when its dirt cheap. I think they added too much mechanics that have to be spooned into your head that the opening levels (the first 3 to 4) are really hard to get trough. not in terms of difficulty but the way it forces you to play in a certain way since you don't have much choice in mods and weapons, and abilities. The dash def adds some needed maneuverability to get outa dodge, but I am already at points where I want to avoid fights, just because there might be a certain enemy type coming up. Its just a frustrating and unpleasant feeling to me, I am supposed to be the motherfucking doomslayer. 2016 had a weak opening too but at least there you get into the groove really early on and you cant wait to get into a fight. here its the absolute oposite!

Its too much intensity, too much going on. the platforming just feels very odd and out of place, and I have a hard time really enjoying it. all the enemies with different tactics. it feels massively prechewed in terms of how you have to deal with combat. in 2016 I felt like there was room to find my own rhythm, here it forces you into a rhythm and if you don't play like that, you will have a bit of a clumsy sucky time. I said a company LIKE AMD and NVIDIA specifically cannot just take a game and try to showcase it using their hardware without the permission of the developer. there are deals made around this stuff and I know this for a fact. Whenever you see game footages in any of their product announcements, videos etc. they is money involved between AMD and those game products, for the simple reason that they use those footages to SELL their own product. The reason why Nvidia's demos are far better in demonstrating raytracing is because they A. invested a ton of money into hiring an inhouse team of high end artists (I know of a few of them, like , and ) to work on these demos. AMD is trying to catch up and are starting to see the value in high end demonstrations of their hardware.

Knowing how devs wil adapt, I think both consoles will get parity. Crytek made a ray trace implementation without requiring an RTX card, there is tons you can do in software. and on the flipside of that. most multiplats will choose the middle ground instead of tweaking a game per console basis. But honestly who knows how things will shape up. The current generation felt a bit stale. both consoles pretty much being similar and already under powered machines (weak CPU's being a bottleneck). Next gen we are gonna see some truly stellar games from first party studios, both on XSX as on PS5. I can't wait!! edit: People keep forgetting that hardware is one point of the puzzle. but software can go above and beyond and really make the hardware shine. Thread Call of Duty: Warzone |OT| Remember, No Chicken Dinner
The thing is, you want to give bad players more of a chance to survive, so the fights from biggest to smaller circle stay consistent. Separating the good from the bad very early on creates an empty gap that too many battle royale games have. Thats why the loadouts are easy to get for everybody, same for respawns. So as I said, you either, 1. keep it as is, or 2. no one has access to it except as a random drop in the middle of the match where people can go to to change to a loadout. it would create more dangerous hotspots for sure. But it in that case the looting system needs a boost with stuff you can get from it because without load outs, normal looting needs to be a more important part of the game. The last thing you want as I said before is to eliminate bad players early on. you want them to feel like they have many chances and not feel like some sweaty dude bro sitting in a corner can kick em to the loading screen. You want more options to have fire fights, more clutch moment, more chances to regroup and engage with the game. especially as newer players. Remember, this is a free to play game which depends entirely on people playing. make it to brutal for new players, they will easily quit the game and never play again.

Thread Call of Duty: Warzone |OT| Remember, No Chicken Dinner
You cannot increase money for loadout drops, they need to either remove it completely, or rethink it on a fundamental bases. just increasing price will make the skillgap too large. good players will be able to get their good weapons, and average players will struggle to earn enough money to compete. It needs to be accessible to everybody or to no one. I would remove it and have it as a random drop only.

Thread Do you think AAA studios should calm down with their pursuit of visual showcase and high production value?
Stop saying crunch exists because of poor management decisions. There have there been cases where its because of that, sure, but most of the time Crunch exists because of the nature of game development. You are correct about player expectations, and I get to that in a bit. If it was a linear path from A to B it would be easily Manageable and would mean the more games you make the more efficient the process becomes, but its not. No matter how many times you make a game, the experience is never the same. This is because the industry is always moving forward, there is a insurmountable amount of competition among studios who all try to fight for consumer attention that drives constant change and innovation. The only thing that keeps projects spiraling out of control are the skill and experience of those involved and how to avoid time sinks and project traps and this includes management! On top of that you have the publishers and money men who keep things from not costing too much. That is usually how projects get cancelled, changed, etc. Devs have the aspirations to make the greatest game ever, every damn time. and management usually keeps it within bounds and publishers cut when its needed. I would even go as far as to say, broken products happen because of consumer expectations. the Early access model exists because of increasing development times and ever demanding consumer expectations and demand to release products every few years or so. Too long a gap and a developer is considered dead (DEV X dont make games anymore) and the gamer move to the next big thing like locust. We are all screaming for attention into an over saturated market and we do our best to give you what you want. but its never enough. people rip you apart because of a stutter here and there while they have not updated their graphics card or system drivers in a decade. For me personally, the job is the best thing that happened to me. working on projects with amazing talented people. each giving it their all. The worst thing are the average consumers who don't give a single fuck about those who made their next big game. they play and complain, play and complain. Then you have some amazing fans who spend insane amounts of time playing our products, sticking to it, streaming it every day, making content on youtube, or make fan art, mods, and cosplay. anyway, went a bit into a tangent here.

Thread Why aren't there leaks for everything?
There are, which if you read elenarie's post you would start to understand, which is one part of it. The other part is the fickle nature of game development. One part is that projects get cancelled ALL THE TIME! in various states of development. I can easily say, for any project that gets made, 5 will be cancelled (conservative number) and not only for reasons that involve quality of the project. Sometimes projects get pulled because it simply wasn't the right time to do it, lack of publisher interest. A deal being shattered because of a leak, or hundred other different reasons. Another part involves the way a game project evolves over time. Often it starts out as a totally different beast and slowly transforms into the end product. Its a roller coaster ride, and imagine the outrage of every decision being made if this process was public. There are always 50 % that like it, and 50 that don't, then as a developer, in which direction do you turn? A more open development means less creative and risky decisions. Gamers are notoriously bad game designers.

harsh truth, you can't. I can count on zero hands, the time that in my professional 12 year career, I witnessed someone that is not in upper management pitch a game idea internally and got turned into a project, let alone someone outside the industry coming in with ideas. There are plenty of ways to get into the industry and none of them are being an idea guy. if you really want to make a game.. go make a game and don't let people stop you! In the end its all about how bad you want it and how far you are willing to go. Engines are free, there are tutorials for visual scripting or how to learn to program everywhere! The barrier into indie development is super low these days and kinda reminds me of the old days of garage devs. All you need is a computer, and the will to make it happen. It wont be easy and will probably be the most challenging thing you will ever do in your life, but its worth it!

I personally went back to a non pro intuos large. Non screen tablets are better built and have less technical issues and the improvements a screen makes to my drawing abilities are nil, plus it has more than enough pressure points and sensitivity (I actually find that anything beyond those specs are overkill and wont make a dent in translating lines from hand to screen). Aside from those points, they are also light, don't get hot and I can put them everywhere. The only plus about the intuos pro's are the pens. they are a bit bigger and have a more comfortable rubber for the fingers, which the non pro doesn't.

Modders hack things quick and dirty to achieve results with limited resources, something that would never hold up in full blown development within a large programming force for multiple systems with multiple dependencies, there is a huge difference. There are plenty of ways for consumers to criticize work. you can for example not buy the product, that is one. or leave a negative review, that is another. but in no way is it warranted to call out devs personally.

We grew apart and stuck together because, marriage, and we didn't communicate as we should have. She realized all of this way earlier than me and it came in like a freight-train. It was rough but in the end going our own ways was the best thing to do. I was lucky as it happened as I was moving to Germany (she planned to follow after her education was done a year later) so there where plenty of nights of just overthinking everything but the longer I was away from her without contact in an apartment with only my stuff, the easier things became. Getting out of the house and into your own living space with nothing to remember her by is def something I think would be smart.

Botw was already plenty of stunning, while you can always throw more flops at a title I don't see it making the game better. That's the thing with Nintendo titles. More flops is nice but their games are usually very good regardless of resolution or fancy graphics. Nintendo always feels like they are after making pure, great games and I think because they don't create big hardware boxes they don't go overboard in their game design with features that don't help their games.

Camping is something that is hard if not impossible to fix. the more you "fix" things, control how players play your game, the more predictable combat will be the less dynamic and fun multiplayer is to players. You also dont want to show the devs hand too forcefully, breaks all immersion when you have penalties and messages forcing them to move. Everybody plays different, and that makes MP games fun since people are unpredictable in their tactics. sure its shitty, but camping is the dark side of the coin, remove those, I truly believe you take something away to player choice and the intricate player dynamics of MP.

Rumored, based of "something like netflix" which could mean a bunch of things related to streaming. but lets say it is, MS isnt going full subscription model, they still have their traditional console with normal boxed priced games. Stadia goes full 100% streaming for their entire product Another downside to the Netflix model is that in order for a game to be sustainable if you require them to sell your service they need to be fresh for a while, meaning at any time its a good idea to pull some games from the store and reintroduce them later to freshen up the library. there are plenty of shows or movies on netflix that they pulled. atleast with stadia the premise is that when you pay for a product you can always play it, since removing that game at any point will sour relations with devs/publishers and customers. with netflix like subscription models its kinda part of the deal since they would own your library, you are just renting and they will do whatever they need to do to their game roster in order to keep the users coming.

You also pay for those consoles, which in Stadias case you also do when you pay 10 bucks a month. How I see it, the base 1080p60fps SDR is perfectly fine for a no upfront cost service. Also the base specs will most likely change over time as the pro specs change as well. I can easily see 4k60fpsUHD be the standard when the pro version will move up to support 8k /120fps in the future.

Its a very safe service. now if they would go 100% with this and go full 100% digital and subscription model you can call it a serious strategy.

Thread Stadia is the most mishandled and poorly messaged gaming platform launch since Wii U
I don't know why people think it would work. As a developer you want top dollar for your game, with subscription services you will get a major downward trend on prices. This will do two things: First It might be attractive for customers but developers wont be able to invest as much in their games when your game gets sold for far less than its worth on any other platform. this will result in far less diversity, and games that are easy and cheap to develop and can earn extra money in micro transactions to become the main type of games on there. less single player titles, more money grabbers just so developers will be able to earn as much from Stadia. (look at mobile where there was a clear race for the bottom dollar just to compete and its filled with cheap almost bait garbage) Second, if you have an all you can eat Netflix style service you will reduce developers with their game to marketing items in order to increase subscriber count, resulting again in less diversity. Only games that can grow the platform will be allowed on Stadia. There is a reason why all you can eat restaurants wont offer the best quality food and its always the same kind of restaurant. you want your meals to be dirt cheap in order to still be able to earn money. as I see it they did the best they could do, with offering the platform to devs to use how they see fit, you want to do a free to play game, sure, do it. you want to charge 60 bucks for high quality AAA single player games? sure! you want to do subscription type games like mmo's. all fine. the only thing google cares about it to entice gamer to pay 10 bucks a month for a 4k60fps stream and reap in the usual 30% cut* every platform holder charges. *this is a guess, I have no idea what percentage they charge but 30% is the industry standard and I don't see them going higher or lower.

high speed internet is a thing in most of europe, you dont need to use their controller, and paying for games is a thing on every platform* except you don't need to buy hardware for stadia and I can play it on any screen in my house. Porting games is far less complex than you might think (porting a game to stadia is as easy and as difficult as porting a game to Playstation or Xbox) also since it uses vulkan, since there is already an industry shift happening towards that API and stadia will only fuel that harder and I am not claiming this purely on ubisoft * A netflix model is financially unsustainable for video games and would have resulted in a crash of value for games.

They will just spend up to 60 bucks on the game when the service launches officially for free for the 1080p experience using an old xbox controller or whatever (you dont need the stadia controller) so you can limit the money you give google to almost 0 dollars*. *I am pretty sure google still gets the same 30% cut every platform/store holder gets from devs when you buy a game via stadia The demographic that doesn't want to shell out money for a console is far larger than you think, especially when next gen comes around and those 500 dollar machines are mighty expensive compared to a virtually free service. Their opening strategy isn't to convert gamers that already own a console, its to get those that are interested in the idea of being able to stream high end games at any polace in the house without cabling tethering a heavy box to the TV, or those who might want to have their kids play games in their own room without having to buy a second xbox/ps4, etc. There are plenty of potential use cases where Stadia is an attractive idea. especially around christmas 2020 when the big boys launch I can see the existence of Stadia eating in the potential early xbox scarlett/PS5 sales. Especially if they wont have very strong exclusives. Plenty of parents will be reluctant to paying big bucks for a dedicated next gen box compared to just paying 10 bucks a month and buy them their desired 4k next gen games. Google also being willing to invest in AAA studios to either have an exclusive stadia project or add stadia to the to be developed platforms for said game will do a lot. 10 bucks a month is a veeery abstract thing, especially to those who already pay for various streaming services. its almost an invisible amount which stands in stark contrast to a 500 dollar price tag for just a big noisy box in the living room.

Its a big shoe to fill but certainly not an impossible one. Off course you will always have edge cases, but to say because you live in Australia and you suffer from issues because you are in effect an edge case, does not make the tech less possible. For most people, network prediction works 99.9% of the time, does this mean the tech doesn't work? no. Just because you live somewhere where its most likely to fail does not make the technology less possible. You say you live in Australia with tons of shit internet and high latency, so off course you are going to bash a pure online service like Stadia which most likely wont perform as it should in your area of the woods. Why even comment on this stuff at all if you are not even going to use it. Are you afraid your current gen or next gen console will suddenly disappear? poof? Don't worry. Standard Consoles will still be around for decades, long enough for your end of the world to upgrade its internet infrastructure. You talk as if progress never happens, and technology doesn't advance. in 10 years the gaming landscape will be different and streaming will be an integral part of it.

MP games make "predictions" all the time for well over a decade now about what a player might do. these are micro predictions in the milliseconds and generally are very successful but like in MP games you might get some mismatches. normally these aren't noticeable but the higher the latency the more you get these artifacts (rubberbanding) where the prediction has to correct every time it gets updated. the longer time between updates the more dramatic the effect. I can imagine Stadia using a similar approach and its not some nonsense. What they are talking about are in the range of frames, prediction milliseconds ahead to bridge the noticeable latency gap simple but technical demonstration of this stuff is explained here edit: I am not saying its exactly this, but you can do these predictions locally to further reduce latency and nobody knows what machine learning can bring to the table. All this possible future real time game data from thousands of players being studied by AI, building some prediction algorithm

We already know the tech, so its just finding the most logical price point for what you are getting, and to me that is 499. 399 is extremely unrealistic, and 599 hawks back to PS3 days and I am pretty sure sony wants to avoid that one.

Eehh. a single person can make a game, but the scope of AAA games these days you need teams of hundreds of devs costing up to a few million a month in wages alone (people don't work for free and when it comes to the AAA industry, they often live in dev hub cities with high living costs) and the scary part is that wages typically arent great unless you are a director/management or programmer/engineer and even then they would make almost twice as much in any other tech industry. Dev cost have not gone down, budgets of 100 million dollars to develop a AAA game are the norm. Tools being easier making it more accessible for small groups of people (indies and solo devs) to make games give the illusion that development got cheaper. in reality it didn't.

I would agree with you. AAA doesn't mean how good a game is, it is often higher production value, putting most effort into better graphics since that is the easiest to effectively scale up, which is also where you see most time/money being spent in art assets when you talk about the AAA industry

Thread Polygon: Spending 60 dollars on a game doesn’t make sense anymore
from experience a core team sits often around that numbers (projects I worked on sit between 50 to 70 people for a core team) but then close to release it is common to expand drastically with contractors to get the work done on time. Also you can see with death stranding, looking at the world that most of it is procedural generated terrain/foliage placement etc. Its a smart approach, with most work going into coding the various interconnecting systems and less custom story events and containing those to the scripted in game cutscenes. anyway, the thing is, when you mention that it takes nothing but time, you have to realize that when you talk about a studio, time cost money in terms of wages/taxes/studiospace/licenses for tools and depending on the studio often snacks/food and drinks

Games that then need to be ported to a totally different system (The dev tools for the Wii-u where .. rough), not alone mentioning that a lot of developers would be like.. "hmm, yeah no", for that exclusive right to publish on a dying console and shitting in the face of people waiting for the game on the platform it was originally announced on. Swiping exclusives is not the best PR move and it lays the shit in the shoes of individual development studios who now have to tell their fan base why their game is suddenly exclusive to the wii-u. Again, wanting something is easy, actually being able to make that happen is hard as hell, and takes time.

again you are flipping things around in order to fit your narrative. First person view gives more immersion in interactive video games is not the same as me trying to say that first person view makes a game more interactive which is what you are trying to argue with: "Being ‘inside the head’ doesn’t mean you are making the decisions." "First person perspective doesn’t make anything more interactive. " A first person view point is equally interactive with the environment and choices as a third person viewpoint. there is no difference.

You can, take resident evil for example with resident evil 7, you can still have the same gameplay but from a more immersive viewpoint, or Take strategy games for example, you can still do a first person strategy game and there are many examples that do this, some point of views are more obvious for some genres but none as far as I am aware are exclusive.

that is not what I am saying, I am saying for an interactive media first person offers more immersion since you are put into the head of the character making the decisions. not that first person is more interactive.

well fuck me then, where was the outrage at the beginning? and a big fat LOL at people who think making first person cut-scenes is way easier than third person ones, they clearly have no clue what they are talking about. You still do all the animation work minus the face, you still animate the body. Its way hard to make a first person view believable and you don't have facial emotions to work with as a crutch for good emotional delivery. also All first person action is hand animated, while most third person characters can be motion captured. I have the idea people think its just some dude recording mouse look movements hahaha

Thread CDPR: Cyberpunk 2077 will still have "some very occasional" 3rd person cutscenes
Except video games are meant as interactive media, and with that in mind immersion is achieved better trough a first person view. Third person action, framing, etc are movie techniques, they work fine to set a story and structure a movie to deliver a story but they are not the one true way to tell a story in a video game just like first person is not the ultimate way to tell a story. In cyberpunk we have both, third person to establish setting and character and do some of the framing of your character, and first person for the moment to moment action in order to deliver immersion. Its both worlds combined, so why are we upset again?

Thread CDPR: Cyberpunk 2077 will still have "some very occasional" 3rd person cutscenes
Can someone explain to me what the big deal is because we now have a 33 page thread with people arguing back and forth. The game, from the earliest reveal was clearly shown to have some third person cut-scenes while the bulk of the story is delivered in a first person setting, I don't understand what the problem is. You customize your character for those moments and a sense of immersion, seeing your clothes from a first person view, or your face in a mirror and the full character in the scattered 3rd person cut-scenes, which I am sure will still carry weight. What I dont understand is that it was already shown like this, where people hoping a bunch of story stuff was suddenly third person? where people having issues with first person story delivery when the first reveal came out?

All characters in this game look like heavy exaggerated versions, (caricatures) of their archetypes and I have 0 problems with that. I didn't then and I def don't now. When looking at the lineup they all somehow make sense to me and I would def have a similar approach if tasked to design characters in this art style. I understand the sorceress would be the most difficult one, covering her up more would help still some of the argument against her, but she looks like she can revive the dead with just her touch and embrace which is how I understood her character.

I really have no clue what version of the original reveal you guys have watched. Honestly the ONLY 3rd person cutscene is with V in the elevator and then in her appartment when V gets out of bed, the rest is ALL from a first person perspective minus vehicle driving. From the whole 48 minutes the third person cutscene is 2.5 minutes long. The whole thing def wasnt sprinkled in with 3rd person cutscenes. It was clear from the beginning that first person cutscenes are the main format of story delivery. I def have no clue why we now have a 28 page thread with people up in arms about it.

Whenever a BT in the game eats a human it causes a void-out (massive crater) which as I understand will shape the landscape of the game for everybody.

Its not an upgrade, just a change in CPU model (I assume their original stock ran out and a newer gen fixes some issues and might be a bit more future proof in availability.) This is 99% most likely not a pro model or whatever, just the same SKU, just some hardware swaps.
